I

n 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day to be national Grandparents Day; this year it falls on September 10th. It’s a day for grandchildren to show their love and appreciation to those with whom they hold a special bond.

That bond can last a long time.

Decades after my grandparents passed, I still miss them.

My paternal grandmother was my “fun” grandma. When I was 10, she gave me my first and last corset. It was red and came with a matching petticoat.

She said it would make me stand up straight. I didn’t care about that, I just thought it made me look like Miss Kitty in Gunsmoke. Apparently, so did my mother. It mysteriously disappeared a few days later. Yes, we were very close, especially during those pre-teen years, when the enemy of my mother was my friend.

My only grandfather who was alive when I was born told some of the best stories, giving me precious insight into what it was

like in the early 20th century. Steeped inside his messages were values like the importance of family and a good education.

He taught me how to drive, and when I accidently pushed too hard on the gas pedal and rammed his new blue Ford pickup into the corner of the barn, he taught me about unconditional love.

If you are lucky enough to have grandchildren, make sure to spend as much time as you can with them now.

They will likely remember what you taught them and how much you loved them for the rest of their lives.

Today’s technology makes it easy to keep in touch even if you live far away. Someone suggested recently that one should buy grandchildren their own domain name. Then, through the years, you can keep an online scrapbook t o g e t h e r, d o c u m e n t i n g e v e n t s , milestones and accomplishments. When they are a little older you can share recipes, jokes, and family stories. It will be a lovely legacy.

I’d like to introduce our new president of Lifestyles After 50, Ed Graves. Most recently, he was the Senior Group Publisher for 12 GateHouse Media newspapers in Eastern Arkansas.

Previous to that, he spent 28 years with the Gannett media company including USA Weekend magazine. He’s lived in Pensacola, Melbourne and Palm Coast and says he’s glad to back in Florida.

We also welcome some writers to this edition. Reader Michael Wright has won a couple of our Literary Corner contests and we enjoyed his work so much, we asked him to join our Lifestyles family. Susan Goldfein will be sharing her unfiltered wit and wisdom as she enters a second career as a blogger, author and speaker. Teresa Kindred’s lighthearted humor can be enjoyed in her piece, “Ten Ways to Be a Super Cool Nana.”

10 Ways to Be a

Super Cool Nana

My grandchildren call me Nana and I love it. I even have a sweatshirt that says, “My grandchildren call me Nana because I’m too cool to be Grandma.” To me, NanaHood is the second half of the motherhood journey. Motherhood was fun but this NanaHood thing is way better. It’s all the joy of parenthood without the tractor trailer load of responsibility.

Anyway, it occurred to me that there might be some grandmothers out there who need to up their grandma game so here are some suggestions.

Tattoo your grandchild’s name on your arm. If you have several grandchildren use both arms.

If you aren’t crazy about tattoos, use an ink pen for the tats and wash your arms off after your grandchildren visit.

Feed your grandchildren as much candy and as many soft drinks as they want, but make sure you only do this when they are not spending the night with you. Practice acting innocent so you will be believable when the parents come to pick up the children and they are bouncing off the walls.

Buy a motorcycle. What could be cooler than a grandmother who rides a Harley? If you can’t actually ride a motorcycle that’s okay.

Have your picture made on one and send them a framed copy so they can brag to their friends about their Harley-riding nana.

Take them shopping for school clothes and let them pick out what they think is cool, not what you think is appropriate. They will love you for it even if they don’t get to wear it when mom sees it.

Take them to an animal shelter and buy them a pet to take home to mom and dad.

Send at least one bag of pet food home with them to keep them from killing you immediately.

Get concert tickets for their favorite rock group and tell them they can take a friend.

Then buy yourself a good set of ear plugs and go with them.

For summertime entertainment, have a food fight out on the deck. When you are done use the water hose to spray everyone off. Remind grandchildren not to try this at home. Parents are not nearly as cool as nana.

Use Photoshop to make a picture of yourself with your grandchild’s favorite sports star.

They’ll think it’s really cool that nana once shot hoops with LeBron James.

And the number one way to prove you are a cool nana...

Take everyone to Disney World for a week and put it all on your charge card. The grandchildren will be out of college by the time you pay it off, but hey, those memories last a life time (and so do the bills).

These 10 suggestions for coolness are, of course, in jest. Being cool is like beauty, it’s in the eyes of the beholder. My grandmother did none of the 10 things I mentioned and I thought she was cool because I loved her to the moon and back and she loved me even more.

And when it comes right down to it, that’s a whole lot more important than being cool.

ome pet owners can’t imagine taking a vacation without Spot and many are opting for pet-friendly vacation rentals where he is welcome. But sometimes the guilt can creep in when you have to leave him alone in a hotel room while you go out and have a ball.

many pet-friendly beaches. September is a great time to head to the coastline now that families are back into the school routine, the waters are still warm and prices are lower after Labor Day. We’ve put together a list of suggested venues scattered around the state that offer pet-friendly rentals on pet-friendly beaches. Here you can walk

out your door and head straight to the Gulf or the Atlantic Ocean, leaving just your footprints and paw prints in the sand.

Remember to always bring some fresh water and a bowl with you because salt water can upset a canine’s stomach. Make sure you understand beach and rental rules for the utmost in safety and fun.

Social security advice may be wrong

ecently a client relayed a story of her visit to her local Social Security Administration office. She is divorced, had been married more than 10 years, and never remarried. Her husband had just reached full retirement age, and she believed she was entitled to half of her ex-spouse’s benefit (which was higher than hers).

After applying for benefits, the local SSA representative told her that she was not eligible to collect benefits on her ex-husband’s earnings record until he claimed his own benefit.

While he had just reached full retirement age, he had not yet applied for his own benefit. Even the supervisor in the local SSA office agreed—incorrectly—that the client had to wait on her ex-husband to file.

While it took an attorney and a very specialized Social Security advisor for this story to eventually have a happy ending, it got me wondering just how often incorrect information was given to applicants. Last fall, in fact, the Government Accountability Office did a study on just this topic.

It turns out that in 8 of 26 interviews where the claimant could have received a higher benefit by waiting until a later age, the local SSA representative did not discuss the potential advantages and disadvantages of delaying claiming.

Additionally, 11 of the 18 claimants where the retirement earnings test could potentially apply were not given complete information about how the test worked.

These issues were not limited to in-person filing either. The GAO found that online applicants were not given complete information about how their benefits are influenced by their highest 35 years of earnings, among other things.

Another relatively common problem that applicants discover online is that the SSA has errors in their income history. While this is usually because an employer has incorrectly reported earnings, it nonetheless needs to be corrected, since it is the basis by which benefits are calculated.

The bottom line is this—BE CAREFUL! I have come across too many horror stories about applicants applying for benefits after receiving bad information, even from those they believe are the experts.

These days, most financial planners have software that can determine the optimal claiming strategy for both you and your spouse. Going through these scenarios with a trained professional will show the difference between being given information and being given advice. It can also prevent a mistake that can be difficult or impossible to rectify.

teens, or get some of the ‘cool cats’ to show me how. Then I would have been ‘cool’ too, and, I could have saved some of the girls from having to dance together because we guys were all standing around on the perimeter talking about cars and music.

If I had it to do all over again, I’d take history classes more seriously. I’d conquer the boredom, memorize dates, learn how it repeats itself and how we never learn from it and probably never will.

If I had it to do all over again, I’d be more conscious of “Dorothy R.” and other beautiful, cheerleader-caliber girls who were sweet on me -- only I was too naïve to realize it. Big dummy!

If I had it to do all over again, I

would have forced myself to understand trigonometry and get a passing grade.

“That’s okay,” I rationalized back then.

“When am I ever going to have any use for trig?” In 1964, I became part of a survey crew as a “rodman.”

If I wanted to advance to “instrument man,” I’d have to become adept at using a slide rule a n d know trig-

onometry.

I remained a “rodman” until I left that job.

If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn’t be the class clown, making cat noises during Spanish class. I took it for two years, failing a semester each year, and thus not getting credit for any. “That’s okay,” I said. “I’ll never need it. I’ll never live where Spanish is spoken.” In 1962, I arrived in Tampa, a town whose Cuban population is rivaled only by that of Miami, and….possibly Cuba.

Actually, if I had it to do all over again, I’d probably do it the very same way, because had I done it any differently, I wouldn’t be where I am today -here with the love of my life at a place I call “So Very Happy.”

As fans chat, argue and discuss the early ranking of teams, two major college football polls have listed their favorites as well. The two polls agree on which team should be at the top of the heap and each seemingly has strong feelings about the Southeastern Conference.

Both the Amway Coaches Poll and Sporting News poll, have six SEC teams in their preseason top 25 for the

2017 season; both list Alabama in the top spot. But after number one, each poll features a different lineup for the first five positions.

Amway likes Ohio State, Florida State, Southern Cal and Clemson after Alabama. Sporting News sees it somewhat the same way but shuffling the order with Southern Cal, Ohio State, Florida State, and Clemson rounding out its top five.

Six SEC teams are listed in both top 25 polls including Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, LSU, Florida, and Tennessee.

his future smash record came to life at Memphis’s American Sound Studio where a demo tape by a quintet of teenage Memphis rockers, the DeVilles, surfaced. Included on the tape was a ditty about a guy who receives a letter from his ex. It was written by Wayne Carson, sometimes credited as Wayne Carson Thompson.

The Letter was declared the demo’s only potential winner. The first order of business: create a new name for the group. Carson recalled how an old-time breakfast cereal ad ploy provided the inspiration. “One of the guys joked, ‘Well, let’s have a contest and everybody can send in fifty cents and a box top.’” (Hey, this was the quirky 1960s, after all!)

In the studio, production engineer Dan Penn coached the Box Tops’ lead singer, a long-haired, 16-year-old white kid named Alex Chilton, to “get a little gruff” and emulate a gritty black artist. Chilton complied, although it took him 30 tries to achieve the “feel” that Penn sought.

During an afternoon break, Penn came across a special-effects record in the studio library. Included on the disc was the sound of a jet airplane in takeoff. He loved the gimmick and added it to the end of the song’s master tape.

Songwriter Carson detested the airplane sound and demanded that it be removed. At this, Penn flew into a rage. According to the anthology, Rock and Roll is Here to Stay, Penn spied a razor blade used for editing tape. “Give me that razor blade right there, and I’ll cut this damn tape up!” he thundered at Carson. “The airplane stays on it, or we don’t have a record!”

The sound remained.

Despite Carson’s objections, The Letter, released on the Mala Records label, became an overnight success. It streaked to the top of the Billboard charts, where it remained for four weeks, sold 4 million singles and even earned two Grammy nominations.

Expect a Busy Hurricane Season, Forecasters Say

his year’s hurricane season has the potential to become the most active season since 2010. Numerous early season storms and warmer Atlantic waters have caused forecasters to predict a 60 percent chance of an above-normal season (compared to the May prediction of a 45 percent chance). But, rather than panic, let’s see what we mere mortals can and should do in the face of a potentially volatile Mother Nature. Remember, hurricane season lasts until Nov. 30 and we are entering the peak of the season.

We hear numerous storm terms on the radio and TV this time of year, but we may not fully understand their characteristics. A tropical de-

f you’re under age 65, the process of setting up a Special Needs Trust in Florida is has now become a bit simpler.

A Special Needs Trust Overview A Individual Special Needs Trust (“SNT”) is a trust drafted particularly for one beneficiary who is under the age of 65 and receiving SSI disability benefits as defined by the Social Security Act. The SNT appoints a trustee to manage the trust and make disbursements, and the trustee might be a family member, friend, an attorney, or a bank.

These are often called “D4A” trusts after the section of the Federal law section relating to them. Another type called a “Pooled Trust” or “D4C” trusts is an alternative for people who are over age 65.

Changes in Setting up a Special Needs Trust So, as of last December 2017, they’ve corrected and updated the old law to allow what we call a “self-settled” special needs trust. Your next question might be whether one still needs to be under the age of 65 to establish an individual special needs trust and the ANSWER is yes.

These cases are complicated and fact specific and should thus be reviewed with an experienced elder law attorney.

September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month

varian Cancer is one of the most deadly of women’s cancers. Each year, approximately 22,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. More than 14,000 women will die from it. It is estimated by the World Health Organization IARC department that there are over 238,000 new cases diagnosed annually and nearly 152,000 deaths worldwide.

This cancer typically occurs in women in their fifties and sixties with the median age being 63. Many women who are diagnosed with Ovarian cancer have a genetic history that may include carrying the BRCA mutation gene and having a strong family history of ovarian cancer.

Unfortunately many women don’t seek help until the disease has begun to spread, but if detected at its earliest stage, the five-year survival rate is more than 93 percent. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are often subtle and easily confused with other ailments.

Symptoms may include: • Bloating • Pelvic or Abdominal pain • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly • Urinary urgency or frequency • Nausea, indigestion, gas, constipation or diarrhea • Extreme fatigue • Shortness of breath • Backaches • Weight Gain Talk to your doctor if symptoms last more than 2-3 weeks. Gum Disease May Be Linked to Cancer Risk in Older Women (HealthDay News) -- A new study links gum disease with an increased risk of several types of cancer in postmenopausal women, even in women who never smoked.

Periodontal disease was tied to a 14 percent higher risk of developing any type of cancer, the investigators found. But the greatest risk was for esophageal cancer, which was more than three times more likely in older women who had gum disease than those who didn’t.

In addition, gum disease was associated with a higher risk of lung cancer, gallbladder cancer, melanoma and breast cancer, the findings showed.

“These findings may provide a new target to test an intervention for cancer prevention -- oral hygiene and periodontal disease treatment and prevention,” said lead researcher Jean Wactawski-Wende, dean of the School of Public Health and Health Professions at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Breast cancer, lung cancer and gallbladder cancer were linked with higher risk among women who smoked and had gum disease. For those women who never smoked but had gum disease, other cancers, such as melanoma, were associated with higher risk, the researchers said.

Although gum disease has been associated with heart disease, the exact reason it may be tied to an increased risk of cancer isn’t known, Wactawski-Wende said.

She speculated that gum disease could be a marker for overall health.

“There is real potential for local and systemic inflammation resulting from the bacteria in the oral cavity reaching other sites through ingestion or inhalation, as well as bacteria entering the bloodstream through oral tissues,” Wactawski-Wende said.

Thoroughly Modern Grandma

D

id you know that the Sunday after Labor Day is National Grandparents Day? I reluctantly admit to being a grandparent for 25 years and only recently learning of this occasion.

When our first grandbaby was three, I delighted in hearing her call me “Grandma.” Now that she’s 25, I sweetly request that, as honored as I am to be her nana, she refrain from addressing me as such in public places.

It took another nine years, but we were eventually blessed with four more grandkids, now ages 10 through 16. I don’t yet have a problem with any of them yelling “Grandma” in a crowded movie theater, but as soon as the 16-year-old grows one more inch, and starts using eye liner, I shall look around quizzically and pretend not to notice that she’s referring to me.

Love them all as I do, I have to admit that my grand parenting skills may fall a little short. I don’t bake cookies, or bake anything for that matter. I attend only one out of three Little League games and have avoided extensive babysitting gigs by moving to Florida. Besides, I spend a considerable amount of time writing these essays instead of imparting wisdom to the next generation.

But, there is something that I have passed on to my young crew, at least to the four out of five who

are female. They have inherited my shopping gene. Over the years, for birthdays and back-to-school, we’ve spent quality time browsing through racks and I have delighted in watching my young granddaughters define their own sense of style and individuality.

I was known as the “Shopping Grandma,” the one who’d drive them to their favorite retail establishment and patiently look on as they assessed the inventory, tried on their selections, and asked me for an opinion. We’d return home and they’d proudly model for their parents, who occasionally frowned because a skirt was too short. But, hey, Grandma was entitled to be the spoiler.

It’s September again and backto-school time. Sadly, there are no more shopping sprees. They’re older now and prefer shopping with their friends. So it’s cash or gift cards, while Grandma stays home and considers learning how to bake cookies.

I must admit I miss our ritual.

But now that I’ve discovered Grandparents Day, perhaps they’d like to take me shopping?
