In 2017, keep it simple: do what you love Dear Readers, Remember when you were a kid, and you laughed and danced and sang just for Amanda Smith, the heck of it?

Because when you begin to develop skills of joy and artistry, and feelings of hope and contentment, you will begin to develop skills that blossom into useful talents later on, sparking the urge for further exploration and adventure. And then, you’ve got a reliable resource you can always reach to - fond memories and body experiences - precious inner resources you can turn to to help you accomplish anything you want.

So Seek Joy, Play Often and Pursue Adventure! Your brain will do the rest.

Here she shares with us her wish for 2017: This New Year I hope to see myself and everyone else as a child. I find by being a child in my heart I am free and trusting, living more in the moment as children do.

To see the good in everyone despite what truly happens is something I want to keep strong. I wish to wake daily believing in each person I meet or simply see that one by one we can all make it a better world to be a part of. In 2017, may I be seven again in spirit, with each day one of wonder and real openness of heart. After decades of service, Lifestyles After 50 founder Kathy Beck announces her retirement

A

fter 28 years of creating, publishing and marketing senior-focused publications, Kathy Beck, founder of Senior Connection (now Lifestyles After 50), is looking forward to a new part of her life…retirement. A forever creative and passionate leader, Kathy will change her step to volunteering and continue to work in the senior community.

After moving from California, Kathy, her husband Bill, and their two daughters, Jennifer and Michelle came to the Tampa Bay area - with mother-in-law Martha in tow. Upon arriving, Kathy found it difficult to find help and information for Martha when they sought her Social Security and medical coverage.

Martha Brogna, passed March 1997 Always one to seize an opportunity, Kathy decided to investigate the Senior Market in Hillsborough county, only to discover there was no Department of Elder Affairs at that time, explaining why all Florida seniors found it hard to find services and medical care. That’s when Kathy took matters into her own hands.

She started the paper now known as Lifestyles After 50 in September of 1989, and the first edition ran in Hillsborough County with only 12 pages and two colors - black and red.

An inspired goal, it was not without its challenges. “It was hard to find advertisers and information for a paper no one had heard of. In fact, people told me there were not a lot of seniors in Hillsborough County - but as luck would have it, News Channel 8 picked up the story and that was it… the phone started ringing off the hook from seniors calling to get a copy Lifestyles After 50 • January 2017 • page 6

Florida and the publication expanded to an electronic forum - a brand new site, www.LifestylesAfter50.com, offering e-versions of the paper. Lifestyles went on to serve the community in additional ways, by sponsoring the Florida Senior Games, the Painting Festival, photo contests and 40+ Senior Fun Fests, offering fun walks, music, contests and health information for Florida Seniors.

Kathy and her husband soon went out delivering papers in senior communities talking to people and trying to get support for the Free Paper for Seniors to find information, inspiration, friends and services.

Hillsborough County provided a program called SCNAP that gave seniors a place to come and meet and share lunch provided by the county. This was the beginning of change for the paper as they all worked together with the county to get the word out that more was needed for this growing senior population.

Kathy quickly became a sales person and advocate for the paper to expand into three more counties. In 1995, she won the prestigious Florida Council on Aging Award. In 1999, the Senior Connection started a TV show on broadcast channel 32, and Bill and Kathy answered the phone every Saturday morning for five years. That really did it for Senior Connection’s recognition and value to the senior community - still, Kathy says the best part was meeting all the wonderful

people and getting to know the readers.

Things were really brought to a new level when the New York Times included information about Lifestyles’ Seniors Getting Together column in their front page article on Senior Dating, and the paper soon expanded to five counties.

This was followed by the publication receiving the FL Department of Elder Affairs Award for Oustanding Coverage of Senior Issues in 2000, and many awards and changes for the paper continued as the Senior Connection family grew.

In-person events followed as a way to give seniors more options and inspiration for their lives, and as the paper’s ambitions grew, so did the team of wonderful volunteers who supported the cause, giving more than 100% to help the paper grow.

As a small team of employees grew, Senior Connection joined forces with News Connection USA Inc. Their board consisted of investors believed in the paper’s potential to grow and make a difference in seniors’ lives.

By 2012, over 85 events were held in all six counties on the west coast of

Back in 1990, good friend Don Clark from the Brandon Running Association helped to set up the first walk at the FL State Fair Grounds. Over 100 people came out for the first one mile Walk of the Ages and a 5k. I will never forget the faces of the seniors getting ready with excitement for the walk.

Some of the walkers had canes and wheelchairs others were in tip top shape Grandkids joined in to cheer them on. It was a great feeling to see some of the seniors who had not done any exercise for years have a great time. Over 80 more fun walks went on from there, and I think I still have a T-shirt for each and every walk!

Kathy has been an integral part of the senior population for almost 30 years.

Her dedication has helped provide information, support and entertainment to seniors throughout Tampa Bay and she has left a profound mark on her community.

As the New Year arrived, so did news that Kathy would be leaving the creative project she had dedicated decades of her life to.

“This is a bittersweet moment for me,” Kathy said. “I love this newspaper and my colleagues here, and I devoted much of myself to helping the senior community through my work at Lifestyles. Still, I’m looking forward to pursuing other interests and it’s time to hand the reins to a new leader. I would like to thank everyone for making these 28 years a wonderful experience.

Kathy Beck will formally retire in February, and the entire Lifestyles staff is grateful for her contributions and offers best wishes for her future endeavors.

The Year of the Bucket List

e’re off to a New Year with good intentions and even better resolutions. Since I’m getting my own affairs in order with writing a living will, making an effort to downsize, and formulating some estate planning, I also wanted to round out my bucket list for the year 2017. I’d already decided that my funeral (God forbid it should be immediately after I finish this article), would be one of the biggest bashes the Venice Community Center would ever host and it would be free of charge to all those business owners and residents who have made my life so enjoyable during my time here. I would like what I consider the best Elvis impersonator on the East Coast, Jesse Garron from Delaware, with his outstanding band and back-up singers, to be flown down for a night of sheer joy and celebration in Venice.

Since I’ve attended so many of his concerts and once wrote an article about him that was so well received, I think it only fitting that others share in the joy he’s brought to me. In keeping with the theme of New Year’s resolutions and bucket lists, I asked others to share theirs, and the results, I think, will not only surprise readers but delight many with their sincerity, thoughtfulness and introspection.

To showcase responses from a random sampling of people, I sat on a park bench in downtown Venice, FL where I live and quizzed passers-by. Admittedly, none were non-white, speakers of other languages, or tourists from overseas. Some were shopkeepers, others were Venice residents, and the rest were US tourists. Some wanted their photos taken in their shops, others said they would email me their favorite photos, and some declined to talk or have their photos taken. To make some sense of their replies, I broke their responses into three categories. Some shared personal wishes which usually included a desire for good health; some showed concern for all of mankind, and the third group concentrated on a planned trip or adventure but the most delightful response came from a certified therapy dog with words supplied and translated by her owner. The biggest surprise was uttered by a satisfied male who had already filled his bucket list.

Joe Battagia, museum volunteer from Punta Gorda: “I wish for more time on earth and to own a house in South Beach, Miami because there, it’s really party time 24/7.”

Michelle Mills, clerk at a souvenir shop in Punta Gorda’s Fishermen”s Village, was visiting Venice on her day off. She said, “Getting a home in Punta Gorda is my wish. We were wiped out

by Hurricane Charley in 2004 and lost everything. FEMA was a disappointment, but when the local newspaper showed the devastation my family suffered, people responded and my two girls even got Christmas presents. I’ve been in Punta Gorda since fifth grade and I love it there. It’s calmer and quieter than most beach communities and since I was raised by my grandmother, I appreciate the wisdom and caring of elders so I love the older people who stop by my kiosk, chat, and buy a souvenir of their stay. Maybe this year, I’ll have enough saved for that house.”

In 1987, Florida passed the first concealed weapons law in the nation, which was then copied by forty other states. The law even allows employees to bring their guns to work. Thus it was not a surprise to hear from tourist Cheri Fretheim from Minnesota: “My biggest concern is to get my conceal and car-

ry, we’ve seen such a rise in crime in our little community that it has stopped me from going to the bank alone in the dark. I want the ability to carry my gun wherever I go.”

Joe Kelly from Cape Coral: “I want to catch the biggest fish, shoot the biggest buck and retire with dignity. Of the three, the last may be the hardest. The first two I can pursue until my wife says to come home. I am really looking forward to my retirement.”

Carl Bauer from Venice: “I want to do everything possible to remain at least mentally and physically integrated as I now am. Got a cruise planned for February on the fabulous Oasis Royal Caribbean. That’s a first step.”

Les Megyeri from Washington, DC and Venice: “I want to learn French, spend a season in Aspen skiing every day and following my upcoming cataract surgery, to again land an airplane without a prop strike.”

Lionel Ives, a Merrill Lynch broker from MD: “My goal is to play golf on the Emerald Isle, Ireland, and nationally, I plea for an end to Daylight Savings Time - just set it and forget it. There’s no need to have mandated jet lag every six months. I have not seen any proof it does any good, but I have seen proof that there’s an increase in pedestrian fatalities shortly after the time changes in November.”

Karla George from Venice: “I want to keep in touch with people and tell them how much I care - that’s important.”

Laurie Sherwood, owner of the Palm Hair Salon in Venice: “I want to treat everyday as my last because no one can keep me from smiling. Too many people are unhappy, especially after this last election, and I want to bring them more happiness.”

Carole Storozynsky, hair dresser at the Palm Hair Salon: “I want to work for the next five years because it keeps me young and healthy and I love my boss Laurie. I’ve been here fifteen years and they treat me so nice. We’re like family here and enjoy each other so much - all four of us.”

Barbara Rogoff from Palm Beach: “I am looking forward to 2017 and getting my priorities in order. As I get older, I realize I need more time for ME and also to really take each day as a blessing and make the most of it.”

B. Travel plans: Julie Bauer, Sacramento, CA: I want to fly first class to Europe, preferably Paris. That would be new for me. I also want to visit my ancestors in Dumfriesshire, Scotland.”

Tina Holmes, manager at MRT Landscaping, and her husband, Larry, from Venice: “This summer we are going for two months to Alaska in our R-pod camper pulled by our truck. It has been my lifelong dream to stop at the National Parks and go hiking in the Denali in Alaska.”

David Johe, MD from St. Mary’s, PA: “There’s just one trip I have left to take.

I want to travel from Florida to San Francisco through the Panama Canal.”

Roslyn Johe and her mother from Ft. Pierce, FL are looking forward to a cruise down the Danube together. “We have wanted to go on a river cruise vs. an ocean cruise for years but my stepdad was not well enough to go for so long.

My mom and I are extremely close and think alike so we both agreed that this Viking cruise was for us and then she asked her sister-in-law to go as well. It will be memorable and a time to share together with family.”

C. Concern for Others: Jan Haycraft, clerk at Cabella’s from Minnesota: “One thing I want to accomplish this year is to do more random acts of kindness for others than I did last year. Also winning the lottery would be good so that I could become a philanthropist.”

very New Year, we race to make a new wave of resolutions, a sea of habit change that promises a resurrection of our soul - or at the very least, our waistline. Yet every promise we make to ourselves is followed by the faint echo of fear and self-doubt - that little whisper in the back of our head reminding us of our past failures endured on the tails of New Years’ come and gone...last year’s diet disaster, that time we were going to give up cigarettes, the bad relationship that continued to rear its ugly head long after the love had dissolved.

It is at this moment that both hero and villain exist within us simultaneously, and we are suddenly presented with a choice - beat ourselves up for yet another failure, another miffed moment of growth, or practice self-compassion and seek out the superhero within.

Instead of attacking oneself with harsh words like “I need to try harder this time,” or “why can’t I do what I know I need to do?” it’s important to remember the resolution setting process is far more than just trying harder. Pointless are the moments of beating ourselves up because we “lack enough willpower.”

Rather than work harder, toiling the joys of our days away by filling them with harsh self-judgment, the secret of the inner-super hero is to literally outsmart ourselves. The path to outwitting oneself is approached by utilizing the power of the latter half of nature vs. nurture...and nurturing good habits.

The secret is to finesse the neural pathway system of the brain by building a personal environment that is set up for success. Take Bruce Wayne - he did his crime-fighting and life-saving out in the world, but it was in his Batcave that he developed the tools to be supernatural.

Superman has his Fortress of Solitude, Tony Stark the lab where he perfected his Iron Man Suit. To build your own superhero headquarters, stop focusing on “trying harder,” and use your environment to give yourself a leg up.

How our brains work We humans are creatures of habit. Our brains look for the path of least resistance when doing any activity. The more we complete an activity on a regular basis, the less and less brainpower is required.

hands at 10 and 2, turn on your blinker, step on the right pedal - oh, and watch out for other cars. After decades of practice, you probably don’t think twice about driving. It’s just something you do, somewhat on autopilot, much like brushing your teeth, compulsively checking Facebook and picking up your phone every time it buzzes. And the more times you complete any activity, the more your brain can forge new and faster pathways that require less brainpower. So, in order for us to build better habits, we need to minimize the amount of brainpower required for us to complete that good habit, and we need to maximize the amount of brainpower and steps required to complete bad habits.

Your environment shapes your decisions There are probably two places you spend most of your time - your home and your office. The objects in these environments craft your behavior far more than you realize, as your brain constantly takes stock of what’s around you and what you do when you see those certain things. When you see a refrigerator, your brain may think, “I get snacks here.” If you see your running shoes, your brain might say “I get lots of great bloodflow here.” When you see your comfy couch and giant TV, your brain might say “Ok, time to zone out, I get hours of entertainment here.”

If these are decisions you’ve made dozens and dozens of times, your brain has to do minimal work to make those connections. But compare these mindless activities with a new habit you want

to build, or a bad one you’d like to get rid of. For example, if you’ve resolved to take on a new exercise program every day after work, you need to come home - after you’ve used up all that willpower at work - walk past the couch, the wine glasses and the refrigerator, then walk into your bedroom, take off your work clothes, put on your workout clothes, lace up your shoes, and then walk past all of those amazing distractions all over again.

Next time you head to the store to purchase ingredients to cook a healthy meal, count how many fast food joints you have to drive past just to get to the doors of your local grocery - where you’ll then need to bypass the cookie aisle and the beer aisle all in the pursuit of some measly green vegetables. With compiling research demonstrating the limited personal supply of willpower, it helps to stack the deck in your favor as much as possible - and practicing discernment about what you surround yourself with has been a key secret of superheroes for centuries.

As you embark on your New Year’s quest to greatness, review your personal headquarters to accomplish two things - decrease the number of steps between you and building a good habit, and increase the number of steps between you and a bad habit. For instance, let’s say you wanted to practice yoga every morning - just for a week, why not try putting your yoga mat in the middle of the living room floor? Rather than hiding it in the corner, displaying it in the living room will make it a much more obvious reminder to engage. If you’re inspired to rid yourself of a bad habit, like watching TV, try to limit your recording of reruns of shows you’ve already seen. Next

thing you know, you’ll turn on the TV and realize there’s nothing new recorded...leading you to pursue other activities - you may even read a book! When you start to see how effective it can be to surround yourself with the right cues, you’ll soon recognize endless ways of using your environment to your advantage and those effects will only compound each other. You’ll no longer keep junk food in the house, which will make you feel even less guilty for eating a slice of pizza or two on the weekend.

The options are endless.

In addition to strategically moving things, try creating a vision board as well. Cut out images from a magazine that represent how you want to feel in various areas of your life, like your work, your relationships and your financial status. Seeing these images serves as an instant reminder to your brain as to the future you’re envisioning.

If you really watch too much TV, cancel your cable. Buy an Apple TV or a Roku Player since both offer the option to purchase only the shows you want to watch - which makes for less mindless flipping. Wasting too much time on your computer? If you’ve got a Mac, install the “Self-Control” software and literally block yourself from the sites you continually open every five minutes. Tips to stop being so hard on yourself I

f you’re anything like me, or any other American for that matter, in the back of your mind there is

always the feeling that you are not doing enough, saying enough, or being enough for those around you. I constantly berate myself for any tendency to not “live up to my potential.” If beating yourself up is an old familiar pattern, here are five ways to change a dynamic that doesn’t serve.

1. Observe Your Thoughts. Easier said than done, but by observing one’s thoughts we may stop the “Inner Critic” in his/her tracks. When he/she starts to rear her ugly head, we may say, “No thank you, you are not needed anymore. I know how much you helped me when I was in dysfunctional scenarios in the past, but now you are no longer needed.

2. Practice Loving-Kindness. “You hold in your hand an invitation: to remember the transforming power of forgiveness and loving kindness. To remember that no matter where you are and what you face, within your heart peace is possible.” - Jack Kornfield 3. Don’t Beat Yourself Up. “Living by principles is not living your own life. It is easier to try to be better than you are than to be who you are. If you are trying to live by ideals, you are constantly plagued by a sense of unreality. Somewhere you think there must be some joy; it can’t be all “must,” “ought to,” “have to.” And when the crunch comes, you have to recognize the truth: you weren’t there. I really enjoyed your piece about downsizing.

It reminded me of George Carlin, who was fond of pointing out, “who needs all that stuff?”

Since then I acquire only what is required to live my life. I do not need a bunch of pots and pans and silverware and dishes and furniture and, especially, clothes and shoes. It's also a heck of a lot more economical my "new" way than the old. So while your readers are tossing the old and irrelevant things, they should consider NOT getting new stuff anymore. I guess thrift comes naturally to me. But it can be an acquired taste. The minute somebody sees what "finds" there are in the least likely places - beautiful results! And that is that I really enjoy reading Lifestyles each month not only because it's enjoyable but because I learn so much from it, hence all the clippings. I had three health clips, one each for travel, and finance, and, would you believe, three advertisements.

Being a vegetarian, I learned the availability of a plant-based, organic meal replacement powder, very useful for time crunches when I can't cook. Also, being a wearer of eyeglasses who uses her computer heavily I was happy to learn about the availability of eyeglass lenses with blue light protection. Finally, being a gardener of organic veggies I clipped an advertisement which contained a handy chart denoting which vegetables transplant easily and which should be grown from seed. My point is that each of my clippings helps make my life easier, richer, tastier or more time efficient.

Yes, I would really enjoy the Shen Yun tickets too if I were lucky enough to win them. But I never fully realized until now how fortunate I am to have access to such a bountiful, well-written and complimentary newspaper. ike Bob Dylan, Donovan Philips Leitch rose to fame as a Woody Guthrie clone. Decked out in a denim jacket and cap and blowing on a harmonica that hung around his neck, Donovan’s career began with the hauntingly beautiful “Catch the Wind,” a 1965 worldwide sensation.

Within a year, though, the Scottishborn singer underwent a major transition. Now the world beheld the “new’ Donovan, with long, curly tresses and flowing white robes as he performed while sitting yoga-style onstage, banks of flowers adorning the stage. Donovan’s lyric messages became part of the “far out” psychedelic music era, and his Epic Records release of “Sunshine Superman” (supposedly about orange sunshine LSD) brought him a new audience and set the stage for his next million-seller.

Like his rival Dylan, Donovan often created lyrics that left his followers scratching their heads in wonder, especially when it came to “Mellow Yellow.”

First he said he was “mad about saffron,” saffron being a yellow spice, then he claimed to be “mad about fontine,” a pale yellow cheese. Some problems arose when some listeners thought he was saying he was “mad about fourteen,” as in lusting after a fourteen-year-old girl, but those rumors were quickly dismissed.

To complete his “yellow theme,” Donovan declared that “electrical banana is gonna be a sudden craze.” This led certain people to believe he was encouraging folks to get high by smoking “bananadine,” a fictional psychoactive substance. Supposedly bananadine was extracted from toasted flakes scraped

from the inside of a banana peel, which were then dried, toasted, rolled into a cigarette and smoked. Of course, no hallucinogenic effects were ever reported.

Shortly before “Mellow Yellow” appeared, Donovan had written the line “sky of blue and sea of green” for the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine.” Paul McCartney returned the favor by adding to the background party noise in “Mellow Yellow.” Contrary to popular belief, it is Donovan, not Paul, who whispers “quite rightly” throughout the song.

Trumpets became part of the song’s musical bridge. This had been suggested by arranger John Cameron, who, like Donovan, was a mere twenty years old.

Cameron wanted a loping beat and blaring horns, much akin to David Rose’s instrumental 1962 hit “The Stripper.”

Donovan felt the horns were too blaring, though. As he said in I Want to Take You Higher, “It wasn’t mellow. So all the musicians…put the little hats on the end of their horns, and it went ‘wah wah wah.’ And there it was. Once they put the mutes on, it worked perfectly.”

So what was the song really about? In Songwriters on Songwriting, Donovan explained, “It was interpreted by many people as many different things. But essentially, over all, it was the sense of being mellow and laid back, which had something to do with smoking pot or being cool.”

Donovan’s long run of “trippy” hits would wind down by the end of the 1960s.

As his star dimmed, though, John Cameron’s brightened considerably when he created the stage name John Paul Jones and became the bassist/keyboardist for heavy-metal heroes Led Zeppelin.

Throughout history, humans have explored and defined value systems of all kinds; religous doctrine, cultural standards, moral codes of conduct.

Some are passed down generational lines, internalized without a second thought, an automatic download of inherited expectations dictating what it is we think we deserve, we desire and of course, what we value. As age seasons us with experience, disappointment and deep wisdom, the turn of each passing year offers a time of reflection as to how much of the value system(s) we inherited are we still aligned to, understanding how our own experience on this earth may have shifted our personal values over time, and most importantly, whether we actually live in congruence with what we claim are our deepest-held beliefs.

Just as comical is to consider a nation founded on the ideals of total independence, and freedom of thought and faith, and the painful reality that its becoming involved displacing the land’s original inhabitants. Then there are the more micro-level examples of the woman who claims to value social justice but never acts on behalf of upholding those high ideals in any conrete form, or the man who claims religion while exploiting others’ weaknesses in his business dealings. These inconvenient truths may make one squirmish or even a little aggressive, but perhaps we should instead find solace in the universality of the infallible human mind. A rare and glorious sight to behold is the human who lives his ideals consistently, and maybe practicing a little self-acceptance - and indulging in a bit of humor - upon realizing the somewhat inherent contradiction of the psyche makes heavy topics like civic duty, ethics and a sense of responsibility a little easier to aspire towards with grace and self-compassion.

So if we can’t always rely on what we say we value as an accurate barometer of the value system we actually live by, how will we ever embody the high ideals we claim to believe in? For all of the heavy-handedness in considering one of the most existential questions known to our kind, the answer is, like most things, pretty simple. Actions speak louder than words, and there is no greater revelation than reflecting on how you spend your time.

“You say you want a revolution...” sang the Beatles, “We all wanna change the world.” And you know what they say about those giant journeys starting with those tiny steps. So ask yourself, if I say I value my family do I spend time with them? Am I an armchair philosopher or am I actively discovering avenues for promoting social change through self-expression? How strictly do I uphold my religious beliefs? Do I claim to be of faith but spend time gossiping and practicing deception? Do I feel an allegiance to the planet by which I gain sustenance - the very water I drink, the air I breathe? How do I spend my money? Who do I associate with? Do I value freedom and movement, do I sacrifice my health for a tomorrow that may never come? Do I waste time holding myself and others to impossibly high standards of value that only serve to cripple any constructive progress? What tiring questions... let’s turn on the TV...
