The game that dissolves our differences Dear Readers, In the wake of recent tragedies and a circuslike presidential race, it can seem like the world Amanda Smith, is more divided Editor than ever. While our ideological and socioeconomic disparities may seem impenetrable, there’s always one thing Americans can rely on to transcend it all – good old fashioned football.

As a high school student, I attended a magnet program for academics that, like most specialized public school curricula, was offered at a district school located in a lower socioeconomic neighborhood. Although technically we were all educated under the same roof, administrative officials did little to bridge a glaring gap between a mostly minority population commonly referred to as “traditional” students and the far less diverse population of the magnet program. One of the more cringeworthy ways by which we were divided was by actually structuring our courses on different bell schedules, meaning we didn’t even cross paths during lunch. We each had our own prom king and queen, as well as dual student governments,

creating a silent tension that flooded the high school halls.

The one thing we all did together was celebrate the extraordinary season of our state championship-winning football team. Dressed in red and white, players and fans dissolved a sea of separateness in a way only sports can facilitate.

It was here I met and made dear friends from the “other side” as we celebrated victory after victory that sealed our solidarity. For a few hours every Friday night, my high school’s dual population came together as one.

For much of our society, sports offers a sense of identity for individuals and our nation as a whole. Throughout history, sports has brought America together in times of turmoil, civil rights issues, and global tension. Not without its fair share of controversy, it has also served as a platform for opportunity.

From the legendary Herschel Walker, a Heisman Trophy winner and an exceptional student, to football idol John Heisman himself, the game has long produced storied figures of inspiration.

In addition to its ability to break barriers of race and status, the game has a way of bridging what seems to be an ever-widening generational gap. While the technological revolution may capture the attention of your next of kin in a way that seems frighteningly robotic, differences often suddenly fall away with a little help from football. Much like music and food, tossing the old pigskin around the backyard provides a comforting simplicity devoid of the complications of a modern digital world.

While both college and professional football have spawned egos and scandals worthy of disdain, its gifts of healthy competitiveness and camaraderie dissolve diversity in unique and powerful ways. This issue was created to celebrate the very best of the game - its ability to unite us all. However you may feel about a bunch of grown men tackling each other on the turf, in a world full of tragedy, uncertainty and divisiveness, it’s important to remember that there are still some things that transcend our differences and our difficulties. In the words of the late South African leader Nelson Mandela, “Sport has the power to change the world, it has the power to unite in a way that little else does.”

THIS FALL, FEAST ON SQUASH

A

s a natively grown vegetable cultivated by the Wampanoag Indians, squash occupies a special place in American history. Today, they’re conceived as the green or yellow vegetables vaguely resembling cucumbers; the uniquely shaped gourds that signal a coming Halloween and Thanksgiving. Yet this uniquely beloved crop far precedes the fall holidays of modern folk; in fact its very name is derived from a Native American word used by the Narragansett tribe: Askutasquash.

Part of the Cucurbitaceae family, with fellow members including melons, pumpkins, gourds and cucumbers, squash come in many shapes, colors and sizes - and their looks can be deceiving - squash is technically a fruit! Then there’s the “winter/summer” idiom which should probably be more like “soft/hard” since the peel of summer squash is thin and tasty (think zucchinis) while its siblings - winter squash and the like - have hard, thick inedible skin. Winter squash actually got its nickname from the common practice of hanging the fruit out in cool, dark root cellars until winter ergo, “winter squash”.

Although originally harvested in America, it was greatly popularized by Eastern Europeans who were exposed to its dried seeds by returning explorers from the “New World.” Perhaps familiarity breeds contempt or at least indifference. As the turn of the century has

brought a new conscientiousness about the food we put in our bodies, Americans have embraced produce of all kinds, discovering a newfound love for all kinds of derivitatives of squash, a true American classic.

All squashes provide health promoting substances and vitamins like A, C, and a fair amount of B. Just a mere ½ cup of butternut squash contains 225% of a person’s daily vitamin A, and deep-colored squashes have tremendous amounts of beta-carotene. All are low in calories and acorn squash is packed with fiber and potassium. They’re also one of the easiest plantbased foods to digest and therefore one of the first introduced into a baby’s diet.

When selecting winter squash, pick hard, blemishfree, mold-free “fruit” with rinds that are dull, not glossy. Acorn squash should have a little orange tint indicating maturity, but too much suggests it’s too ripe.

Be sure to feel its weight in your hands, if it’s too light it may have lost moisture and will turn out dry and stringy.

Still smaller is better when choosing acorn or butternut squash - each should weigh about two to five pounds.

When storing, raw winter squash, they’ll last about two weeks in the refrigerator; but once cut, use it immediately or cover in plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator one to two days.

The best part about the winter squash? Preparing it is a cinch! Roast it with a little butter, salt and pepper; mash/squash it with a fork and enjoy.

In February, get on your dancin’ shoes for Footloose. The story involves an ordinary city teen transplanted into a conservative small town where dancing is forbidden and rock and roll is demonized.

The play Boeing, Boeing will round out our Broadway season. It’s the 60s and our swingin’ Bachelor Bernard couldn’t be happier as he juggles three gorgeous stewardesses in his gorgeous Paris flat…until…

Virginia is for Lovers...and Waterfalls Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park offers some of the best waterfalls on the East Coast.

B

eing that July was the hottest month on record, and it could be many more months until we can actually wear a sweater in Florida, we think it’s about time to head north for a cool September journey. And what could be more refreshing and soothing to the soul than looking at and hearing a waterfall.

Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park, a gorgeous, historic national treasure, features a 105mile long scenic byway called Skyline Drive. Here, travelers are treated to endless breathtaking views from atop the Blue Ridge Mountains. There is easy access to numerous trails including the Appalachian Trail from this highway and that is where you can access some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the nation. Bring your hiking

boots, park your car from one of the parking places along Skyline Drive and get ready to relish the splendor of early fall along the blue-blazed, forested trails.

Find your perfect waterfall from the list below: Overall Run Falls, from mile 21.1 in the North District of the park, is the tallest waterfall at 93 feet. It’s an impressive drop and also provides a view of the Shenandoah Valley and Massanutten Mountain to the west. You’ll have rock ledges to sit on as you enjoy the scene. The hike to the falls and back is 6.4 miles round-trip, with a climb of 1850 feet.

Rose River Falls, from mile 49.4 along Skyline Drive, is a dazzling cascade of 67 feet.

After lots of rain, there are as many as four cascades. For most of this hike, you’ll be on

a beautiful trail in one of the park’s federally designated wilderness areas. The hike is 2.6 miles round-trip, with a climb of 720 feet.

South River Falls, at mile 62.8 in the Central District of the park, is truly spectacular. It’s a waterfall of 83 feet, the third tallest in the park. A rock ledge with a stone guard wall offers you a good resting place as you enjoy the sight— and the thundering sound—of falling water. The hike is 2.6 miles round-trip, with a climb of 850 feet.

Jones Run Falls is at mile 84.1 in the South District of the park. Those that want a waterfall to soothe spirits and bring peace should try this one. The hike is 3.4 miles round-trip, with a gradual climb of 915 feet. The waterfall is a jewel— a cascade of 42 feet, surrounded by rocks, moss, and bushes.

While sitting on flat rocks right in front of it, you become part of the scene.

Other waterfalls in the park are Whiteoak Canyon Falls, mile 42.6; Cedar Run Falls, mile 45.6; Dark Hollow Falls, mile 50.7; Lewis Falls, mile 51.4 and Doyles River Falls, mile 81.1. There are five additional falls beyond the first one in Whiteoak Canyon, for those who are true long hikers and climbers, and there’s a second falls beyond the first one on Doyles River. In fact, you can make longer hikes of each of these nine hikes to a waterfall. Just be sure to have a good map. Most of the waterfalls are less impressive in a dry season, so it may be wise to check with a ranger about water flow.

W

hen we moved from f r o m Michigan we left behind all animals.

Though, I missed having a dog, so soon after settling here in Port Charlotte, I volunteered at The Animal Welfare League. They had a small Collie breed, Sassy. She was the type of dog I liked best, and I fell in love with her. After convincing the rest of the family, that I needed a dog, and in Florida, it had to be in the house because of the great heat.

This was my ammunition to convince my mom to let me bring the dog home.

Her size was of a Border collie, but a reddish gold version of that breed. She was fearful of people especially men, and one of her eyes was in an unnatural position with her eyeball turned in, so her vision was likely off. So it was thought that she had been abused. Yet, the shelter didn’t know much about the dog since it had been discovered one morning outside The Animal Welfare League.

I, myself, had social issues spending most of my time with my dogs befor moving. Therefore, a new pet was the supreme thing for me and a loving home for her. We spent the weekend socializing with her before returning to work.

Sassy slept under my bed at night, possibility due to her fears. I fed her before I went to work, so she would get

used to a schedule. When I came home about 11:30pm, Sassy was right there wagging her tail as I walked into the house. It was so nice to have her accept me as I was, and I accepted her as my friend.

When I had her checked out at the vet, he said she could have surgery to fix her eye, but otherwise she was a healthy dog. One problem we were having was that every night after settling down for the night, Sassy would vomit under the bed. Sometimes, I didn’t catch it until the morning, but when I heard her, I had to clean it up immediately so it wouldn’t stain the carpet. I tried to be quiet to prevent waking up my sister who had to get up in the morning.

The veterinary said the dog was healthy, so we decided to see if she would adjust. As it was we kept her seven months trying to overcome the situation. I didn’t know as much about dog behavior then as I do now. Finally, I had to admit that I didn’t knowhow to comfort her and make her life better, even though we had some great times together. Perhaps a home with a place for her to run, and someone to train her would be ideal? So, I had to take her back to the Animal Welfare League to re-home her. Somewhere Sassy could learn to overcome her fear of men with an animal behaviorist to sort out her issues.

A book about this era of football, the game itself, Heisman’s personality and contributions to the sport, as well as tons of trivia about the Heisman Trophy, legends of the game, how Alabama got the name “Red Elephants,” and other gridiron tidbits not so well known can all be found in the book, “Heisman’s First Trophy,” written by Sam Hatcher.

Described as “a riveting novel based on a true story featuring romance, revenge and greed about a historically significant game played 100 years ago,” the book provides the uncanny details of a game nil of any first downs - but full of a record number of extra points, and only 14 Kappa Sig fraternity brothers on the sideline representing Cumberland’s team.

It also reports about the brutality of the sport at the time, including the number of tragic deaths recorded and ultimately, Heisman’s heroic acts that helped to stimulate a much-needed turn in the tides.

Despite canceling its football program the spring before, Cumberland was forced by Heisman to play the game as scheduled or face a lawsuit for breach of contract, an action that likely would have closed the already financially stressed institution. To save their university, a group of frat boys made the trip to Atlanta for a head on collision against the Heisman-led Yellowjackets.

Packed with photographs of the legendary game, as well as all sorts of quirks, twists and turns, the 240 page book is stocked with fun facts that recall moments when a Cumberland player actually hid on the Georgia Tech sideline so he wouldn’t have to go in the game and the cost of a pint of Jack Daniels in 1916.

We recently asked readers to share a traveling experience that taught them profound life lessons. The story below from, Tamara Ewers reveals how fulfilling a childhood dream offers memories that last a lifetime. — Editor

W

hen I was a child living in Pittsburgh, I used to dream of traveling to Paris. I wore a red beret and tried to speak with a French accent. Recently, at 69 years old and with the love of my life by my side, my dream became a reality.

When we started planning our trip, there were two things on our list to see and do. First of all, we wanted to hang our wedding lock on the Bridge of Love, and secondly, to picnic under the Eiffel Tower with a bottle of wine and croissants. We soon learned the Bridge had been torn down due to the extreme weight of the locks. Worst of all, terrorists attacked the city of Paris one week prior to our departure. We were devastated, but agreed to continue on with our plans.

We arrived and opened the blinds in our 9th floor room to reveal the most beautiful sight, that of the Eiffel Tower. Soon we were unpacked and on our way to see the Louvre’, the Cathedrals, shopping areas, and the Art District. We learned that the wonderful people of France had built a new Bridge of Love and so we tied our wedding lock on the fence together with ribbons from our family and friends. On our last day there, we packed a big purse with 2 wine glasses and a bottle of Chardonnay, some tea towels, a butter knife,

croissants, crème fraiche and creamy butter. Next to the Tower we found a spot on the green soft grass and laid our blanket down. Hours went by and we laughed, talked, drank our wine, and enjoyed our pastries. As we approached the Tower, we entered what was like an airport security check and they scanned my purse.

The next thing I knew, police and security from all around were running toward us; they pulled me aside asking if I had a knife. I immediately responded “no,” not even thinking about the butter knife.

They asked me if I had glass on me and at that exact moment I saw my purse pass through the x-ray machine where one could plainly see the outline of the wine glasses wrapped in the tea towels and the knife lying next to the empty wine bottle. Ooops! I thought we were in big trouble because I had just accidently lied to the French government. Just as I began to apologize, an officer pulled out the glasses, which unrolled from the towels, fell on the concrete floors, and shattered into a million pieces. He then pulled out the butter knife and, with a scowl on his face, showed it to me. Tom helped calm things down and they let us go.

We got in the elevator and soared to the top of the Tower. It was a windy, starry night. We were happy to be in love and to be in Paris; happy to be making my dream come true.

When a 200 year old Cypress was struck by lightning, Seminole Indians carved and painted it into a war canoe. This precious artifact was donated on behalf of the City of Hollywood in 1955 as a trophy for the annual game between Miami and Florida. The canoe symbolized the magnificent spirit and fighting determination of the Canes. You can still check out the canoe on display in UM’s Sports Hall of Fame on campus.

Visit the cemetery to see the grave markers of more than 85 pieces of turf from all across the nation.

Enjoy a less fanatical tailgating scene If you’re not into the debauchery of wild college tailgating, attending a game in Tallahassee is a great choice. Because the campus is relatively small, the tailgating scene is refreshingly spread out with lots of happenings at local breweries, block parties throughout the city and home-television viewing. There’s plenty of fandom - just without all the typical chaos.

At the start of the last quarter of every home game, Miami fans and players can be seen holding up four fingers.

The sign indicates their belief that a game is won in that crucial final period. True Hurricane fans and players use the sign as a symbol that they own that last quarter.

While the facts surrounding the original naming of the team remain ambiguous, a popular version claims Porter Norris of the 1926 team scoffed when university officials suggested naming the team for a local flora or fauna. Norris counter-offered with “Hurricanes” since the opening game had been postponed by such a storm.

In subsequent years had arisen to the name claiming to reinforce Miami’s negative reputation as a weatherbeaten community living constantly under the threat of destruction. But as one UM official rationalized in the 1960s, “Does anyone think Chicago is overrun by Bears just because the town has a football team by that name.”

F

or many years, my best friend Lee and his wife Diane would invite us to join them on their annual trip to England. We’d always smile and say “one of these days”, knowing down inside that such a trip was likely to remain on our “wish list” forever. Then one year he asked, “If I provide your transport over and back, can you cover your food and lodging?”

We responded “Yes!”, and then we began scrimping and saving in order to make it a reality.

The reality finally happened on May 18, 1994.

We landed at Manchester airport and Lee’s annual hired-chauffer drove us from there to the small town of Thirsk in North Yorkshire.

In a short while we met their longtime friends Keith and Jean who lived in nearby Bagby. We found lodging at The Three Tuns Hotel and a day later Keith arranged for us to stay at The Kirkgate Hotel, just three doors down from the clinic of veterinarian James Alfred Wight, better known as “James Herriot”. The six of us would spend the day together doing ‘touristy’ things until the evening. Lee and Diane always retired early and went to their hotel around 7pm, after which Keith and Jean would “collect” us and show us around the nearby villages, take us out to eat and visit with friends. Then we’d go park and watch the pub-crawlers until it got dark at 11pm. We really bonded with them, as well as with John the hotel manager, his friend Judy, and Kate the housekeeper from Australia.

Some nights we would return late, to find that John and Judy had waited up, hoping we would join them for drinks by the fireplace. One Evening, John asked us to get up early the next morning because Judy was going to take us to see something “that not even the locals get to see”. Judy had worked for Donald Sinclair; it was he upon which the character of “Siegfried Farnon” in the TV series “All Creatures Great and Small” was based. She actually took us to a stud farm to see a horse named ‘Primitive Rising’ have his ‘seed’ collected. After the deed was done, the farm owner asked us “So! How are you enjoying your holiday?” I said “We absolutely love it here!” “Love it!?...” he said, “what is there to love in this town?” I said “the people!” and he grew quiet. Later in the day, in a quiet moment, I turned to my wife and loudly said “Joy!” “What?” “WE’RE the snobs!” “What are you talking about?” “WE’RE the snobs! We’ve been led to believe that the British were snobs, but it’s US!” My mind settled briefly on thoughts of a high school book report I did on “The Ugly American”.

Before the end of our vacation, Keith and Jean took us aside and made us an offer similar to the one that Lee had presented: “If you can cover your transport and come back to England, you’ll stay with us.” And we did, several more times, in fact. We’d stay in town for a few days, eating, visiting the shops and the farmers market on Wednesdays, then we’d pool our money, jump into Keith’s caravan and travel all over middle and northern England as well as southern Scotland, visiting with their many friends and relatives, making memories that will never die.

We cried twice on each return flight, once when our plane took off and again each time it began its descent; we didn’t want to be back just yet.

What did we learn in our travels? 1. Don’t accept anyone else’s preconceived notions. 2. The British are a warm and caring people. 3. If one thinks British food is bland, they’ve not eaten at the right places. 4. If the Brits take to you, they love you with all their hearts. We long to get back.

RETHINKING RETIREMENT

Master the “Pensionless” age as one of the nation’s leading finance experts serves up planning deadlines by the decade I n the past 30 years, Americans have braved a technological revolution spawned by the internet, the largest loss of life by a foreign attack on American soil (September 11, 2001) and the historic election of the nation’s first African American president. Coinciding with so many changes in the country’s social and political landscape, the American economic climate also underwent radical, unprecedented change, as the aftermath of the 2007-2008 financial crisis continues to unfold almost a decade later.

To understand just how much retirement has changed in the last few decades, consider this: in 1985, retirees relied on Social Security for 65% of their income - meaning most Americans could live on their Social Security benefits alone. Today, Social Security accounts for just 27% of the retirement income of an average American.

In addition to the dwindling cushion of Social Security, perhaps the biggest change in how Americans fund their retirement has come in the staggering decline of pension plans - in 1980, 46% of all private-sector workers were covered by a pension plan, by 1990, that number had dropped to 43%, and today, a mere 19% of companies offer pension plans - with more disappearing everyday. While the past afforded Americans a retirement pretty much covered between Social Security and pensions, modern day retirees find themselves faced with conquering the tasks on their own - including health costs, once routinely supplemented by employers well into a worker’s retirement. Medicare doesn’t cover everything, and out-of-pocket healthcare expenses are growing like never before. The rise in retiree’s medical burdens are due much in part to a radical “new normal” in life expectancy for the average American, now expected to live a whopping 20-30 years after the once well-established retirement age of 65. While the medical advancements that prolong life are truly miraculous, the longer people live, the larger the financial nest egg needed to support them.

Dividend Misconceptions

R

ecently a client asked me a series of questions about dividends, as it pertained to one of the stocks in his investment portfolio. After we talked for awhile, it dawned on me that I may be assuming all of our clients know more about dividends than they actually do.

By definition, a dividend is a sum of money paid regularly by a company to its shareholders out of its profits. Investors who own stock in a public company may be eligible to receive dividends if they own the stock as of the ex-dividend date. Most American-based companies that pay dividends do so on a quarterly basis, while many foreign-based companies only pay dividends once a year, based on their annual profits.

Paying a dividend every three months would seem to imply a certain stability to this quarterly payment, and many investors assume that it’s guaranteed. This is not at all the case, as the payment is ultimately a reflection of the future profitability of the company, which is obviously uncertain. According to Standard & Poor’s, last year 394 companies reduced their dividends, a 38% increase over 2014.

And these are not confined to small, obscure companies that you’ve never heard of. Look no further than General Electric, which in 2009 cut its dividend 68%, after paying a dividend for more than 100 years, and increasing the amount of this dividend for more than 50 years.

Another client misconception about dividends is that the payment is an extra form of return, and that buying the stock right before its record date will result in “found money”. This is incorrect, since the price of the stock will be reduced by the amount of the dividend two days before this record date (this is the date investors must be on the company’s books to receive the dividend). For example, if a stock trading at $31 has an upcoming quarterly dividend payment of $1, it will open trading two days before the record date at a price of $30. This is known as the stock trading “ex-dividend”.

So if some dividends are good, more are better, right? Not so fast, although in my experience many investors believe this. As I always stress to clients, the way to compare any investment to another is by total rate of return, which is the sum of the dividends or interest received, and the price movement of the investment. While a stock that has an annual dividend yield of 8% may seem attractive, if the price declines 10% during the year, the total return for that year is -2%. It is not a coincidence that many stocks with eye-popping annual dividend yields are often mediocre investments, because their price tends to drift lower over time.

If you have the tolerance to own individual stocks, it is important to dig deeper than what the company’s annual dividend yield is. As your parents told you, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
