e wish all dads a Happy Father’s Day so enjoy the hammock while you can. Then start stocking up on plywood because hurricane season is a comin’.

While images of Irma still dance in our hurricane-weary heads, we could be headed for another active season say the researchers at Colorado State University.

Their preliminary prediction is for a slightly above-average Atlantic hurricane season in 2018, citing a relatively low likelihood of a significant El Niño. This weather phenomenon can contribute to an increase in wind-shear that can tear hurricanes apart as they try to form.

Currently, the tropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures are about average and thus considered a neutralizing factor for the upcoming season.

The CSU Tropical Meteorology Project team has forecast 14 named storms, seven of those turning into hurricanes and three of those predicted to reach major hurricane strength (Category 3 or above).

CSU’s outlook is normally one of the first to speculate as to what the upcoming storm season will look like, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and others providing more detailed forecasts as the season progresses.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with a sharp peak in activity in late August, September and early October.

Hot Flash: Menopause The Musical is coming to Tampa

Cindy Williams got her first big break in the role of Ron Howard’s girlfriend in 1973’s American Graffiti. Then she skipped into our hearts as the co-star of Laverne and Shirley. Since then she’s made some films, done some theater, and wrote her memoir, Shirley, I Jest!

We caught up with her and at age 70, she’s as much fun as ever.

Q. So you are the “fifth girlfriend” in Menopause the Musical –a role created just for you when you are available to perform with the regular cast. Please tell me a little bit about your character.

A. I play myself with a few fun things added.

GFour Productions brings the international hit show, Menopause the Musical, to Ferguson Hall at the Straz Center for six performances, June 27 through July 1. And there’s a special guest star on tap: Cindy Williams of Laverne and Shirley fame plays the “fifth girlfriend.”

The 90-minute theatrical song and dance fest brings the “silent passage” out of the closet and casts jokes about hot flashes, mood swings, wrinkles, weight gain, brain fog and all the other interesting little changes the female body experiences.

The Tampa cast features Lisa Mack as the Professional Woman, Patti Gardner as the Soap Star, June Lang as Earth Mother, and Liz Hyde as the Iowa Housewife. The women, who meet at a lingerie sale at a department store, are either on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived “the change.” They form a bond and, along with the audience members, sing along to parodies from the classic pop songs of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s.

“It is freakin’ hysterical,” said Vicki Willis, who will see the show for the third time around. “They change the lyrics so songs like Puff the Magic Dragon becomes Puff, My God I’m Draggin’. Stayin’ Awake is sung to the tune of Stayin’ Alive.”

Q. Will you be singing any solos? Did you take singing lessons or are you a born natural?

A. I sing one little ditty by myself and can carry a tune if it’s in my key and I’ve had 8 hours of sleep.

Q. Do you believe this musical has a social value in helping women cope with and accept “the change?”

A. Absolutely. The show makes fun of menopause. It takes what might be considered a depressing time of life and turns it into laugh-out-loud fun and joy for both women and men.

Q. How has the word “menopause” come out of the closet since the days you were on Laverne and Shirley?

A. When I went through menopause, I knew nothing about it. I was depressed, fat, and sweating constantly. My memory was shot. I know it sounds silly, but I thought I was the only one suffering through this. But now, as we all know, there’s so much information out there for women’s health…and then, of course, there’s Menopause the Musical.

Q. Any special connection to Florida?

A. I’ve performed in many shows in different cities throughout Florida and I have many wonderful memories of this beautiful state.

Q. Can you touch on your career and life highlights you’d like mentioned?

A. Are you kidding? I’m so old now, I can’t remember any of that except to say I’ve been so blessed to have had and still have a wonderful career…Wait, what was the question?

Q. In Laverne and Shirley, you were exploring your budding hormones. In Menopause the Musical, you are saying goodbye to the hormones that made you a woman, mother and a wife. Do you (or your character) miss that “period of your life?”

A. No. Thanks to my estrogen patch, I’m still lusting after Carmine.

What Does Dad Really Need?

s Father’s Day approaches the question always arises: What to get a man who has everything? I know my daughters go through this exercise every year and no doubt you may too.

I usually request a cute 30-year old which makes everyone laugh but maybe that’s not a bad idea after all.

If your father is of advanced age and the infirmities of this stage of life are starting to take their toll, consider giving him the gift of a regular companion.

Of course, I’m talking about the kind of person that will assist him with activities such as driving, errand-running, shopping, meal preparation, personal hygiene and doctor appointments. Whether they are 20, 30 or 60 doesn’t matter as long as they are reliable, credentialed, professional, trustworthy and have the personality and training to do the job.

If your dad is like most dads, he is fiercely independent, rigid in his opinions and stuck in a routine. He may not want to admit that most of his friends have moved into a senior living community or passed away. He may not want to face the fact he is becoming more isolated and, at the same time, less capable.

And as much as you want to be there for him, you have a life too.

You love him and want him to be happy, so how do you approach the subject?

I always start with reminding people that getting help is not the end of one’s independence but rather the beginning of the restoration of their independence. When people socialize and exercise more, eat better, get out and experience all life still has to offer, their spirits improve and soon their health does too.

It’s quite possible that when you mention the idea, Dad will say, “I don’t want any help; I don’t need any help. I’m fine and I can do it myself.” But deep inside you know that providing him with some assistance and companionship will give you both precious peace of mind.

In my experience, I can say with absolute certainty that after an initial period of resistance, Dad’s attitude will migrate from reluctance to thanks to excitement and anticipation.

So, if you want to do something really great for Dad this year and give him the best gift ever – give him his life back.

Keep it Safe on Father’s Day

-a-a-h. Father’s Day. Some of you will choose to spend the day in a La-Z-Boy with a remote in one hand and a cool drink in the other.

Others may experience an attack of biophilia – an innate desire to connect with nature. Florida, for all its natural glories, can pose some special problems this time of year, mainly in the form of wildlife and wild weather, so let’s review some potential hazards before you head out for the fun.

Skeeters. These little suckers can turn almost any outdoor activity into a miserable experience—or even a serious illness like Zika or West Nile.

The most effective repellent against mosquitoes contains DEET but there are some natural alternatives available.

Snakes. Florida is home to six venomous serpents—the Eastern diamondback rattlesnake, pygmy rattlesnake, timber rattlesnake, coral snake, copperhead and the water moccasin. Learn to identify each one, stay on cleared paths, give snakes their space -- and listen for rattles.

Gators and Crocs. Florida is the only U.S. state where both alligators and crocodiles exist, and each is a leathery hunk of dangerous teeth and claws. Always observe from a distance and never offer them food. (It’s illegal, by the way.)

Camping and hiking. You’ve spent a balmy evening under the stars, now Mother Nature beckons. Before launching into your walk, doublecheck to make sure you have your basic first aid kit, adequate water (at least 64 ounces per day per person), and that you’ve left your campsite as you found it, making sure the fire is out and the trash is safely disposed of.

Check for any ticks on you and your pet after your woodland hike.

Boating. With an azure sky above and an expanse of liquid glass ahead, you ease the throttle forward, ready for the best Dad’s Day ever. Make sure to leave a float plan with the marina or a family member which includes your name, address, phone number, departure, location, expected arrival time, boat make and model. Don a life jacket. Plan to drink plenty of water and delay the partying until safely ashore since booze affects response time and the ability to focus on what you’re doing. Check local forecasts and radar and always take a radio with you before casting off. If clouds threaten, head back to shore quickly. Finally, travel at a safe speed and be aware of other watercraft and objects in the area.

Fishing. If the thought of reeling

in the evening’s dinner makes you eager to bait that hook and drop it into the sparkling clear water, go fish. Ah, but beforehand make sure you inform others as to your plans, be aware of your surroundings, and never wade and cast at the same time. Plant your feet first, then toss your line. And wear a lifejacket too, just in case you take a spill.

Golfing. On the golf course, acres of green manicured lawn are yours without all the work. Before you take the first swing, make sure you’ve warmed up with stretches and trunk twists. Drink water and avoid alcohol to avert potential accidents and hydration problems. Watch the weather and if lightning occurs on the course, be sure to get away from open ground, isolated large trees and bodies of water.

Take shelter in a building, a restroom or a car, avoiding all contact with metal including golf clubs, umbrellas and golf carts.

et’s face it. We’ve all dreamed of invisibility at one time or another, most likely during our childhood.

Tell me: What mischief would you get into if you were invisible?

Scare people with paranormal activity? Dance naked as though no one was watching?

I’ve got news for you. I have acquired the gift of invisibility and you can too.

I walk past her with ninjalike stealth and go into the kitchen, open the refrigerator and uncap the jug of 2 percent milk that’s been calling my name. I take two healthy swigs straight from the bottle. My milk-lust fully satiated, I stand there smiling as I bask in the afterglow of the 40-watt bulb that illuminates the room.

Being invisible does have its benefits.

Like an Indian scout, creeping silently through the forest, I return to the living room couch realizing that the invisible are apparently silent too.

What a gift! What will tomorrow bring? Should I become a crimefighting superhero? Or an ace reporter for the Washington Post?

Like a fly on the wall, I imagine I could eavesdrop on some pretty interesting political conversations.

The possibilities are endless!

3 ways to love The Florida Orchestra’s new season

f you’re expecting The Florida Orchestra’s next season to be a letdown after its 50th anniversary celebration, don’t. Music Director Michael Francis has put an enormous amount of thought into programming TFO’s most wideranging season yet. “It’s our first chance to show where we’re going as an orchestra in our new era,” he said. Looking beyond the big-name works – Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue – there’s so much more to adore. Here’s the inside scoop on three concerts you’ll fall in love with.

A Child of Our Time (Nov. 9-11): Don’t know it? Understandable. This is the first time TFO will perform Michael Tippett’s oratorio, featuring The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. What’s to love: Tippett, a pacifist, was inspired by Kristallnacht when he composed the oratorio, so it was a natural choice to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the “Night of Broken Glass” in partnership with the Florida Holocaust Museum. “It’s extraordinary as a dramatic, powerful, brand-new piece for the audience to hear, but it’s also very accessible, beautiful and memorable,” Francis said.

The Planets (Feb. 15-17, 2019): This concert includes a hidden gem that is dear to Michael Francis’ heart: music as a living art form. He and his wife, Cindy, are sponsoring a

new work by USF Associate Professor Baljinder Sekhon, as yet unnamed.

What’s to love: Francis’ mission is twopronged: explore the Masterworks in a new light and discover new music, especially Florida talent.

“We’re showing that as the third biggest state, we have an incredible artistic voice,” Francis said.

Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 (March 29-31, 2019): Even if you’re already a Brahms fan, the rest of this program is more awesome than you realize.

What’s to love: First of all, Michael Francis is stoked about working with pianist Benjamin Grosvenor in his TFO debut: “He is one of the great talents of our time.” This concert also features an unusual approach to Arnold Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night, based on the poem by Richard Dehmel. The beautiful piece will be performed mostly in the dark with the poetry on screen. “It will be deeply atmospheric and powerful,” Francis said.

Served fresh, its tender kernels snap open to release sweet nutrition including Vitamins A and C, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, calcium and iron. Florida Sweet Corn and Ricotta Fritters Ingredients: 2 ears Florida sweet corn, kernels removed 4 oz. ricotta cheese 2 large eggs, beaten 1/2 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped fine 1/3 c. self-rising unbleached or whole wheat flour Olive oil (for shallow pan frying) Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

• Serve with low-fat sour cream if desired.

The veteran actor—a remarkable 88 and still very much alive—returns to the silver screen with a growl in his voice and a wink in his eye in the Sony Pictures Classics offering of Boundaries, a soft-edged dramady opening June 22nd.

Plummer, still best known as the dashing Captain Georg von Trapp in 1965’s The Sound of Music, is perfectly cast as Jack Jaconi, the charming and debonair (yet ultimately sly and selfish) octogenarian father of Laura (Vera Farmiga), a frazzled single mom long on the outs with Dad. After being kicked out of his nursing home for dealing marijuana, Jack shows up unexpectedly at Laura’s place. But poor Laura is already angst-ridden about her own life issues, including the fact that she can’t resist adopting all the stray dogs that

fill her cramped Seattle house.

“You’re the pied piper of mange,” Jack wisecracks, suggesting that in reality Laura needs to rescue herself.

Time for a road trip, it seems. Laura piles Jack, her surly but bright 14-year-old son Henry (Lewis MacDougall), and a few adorable mutts into her car.

The destination is Los Angeles, where Laura hopes to hand Jack over to her goofy dog-walker sister JoJo (Kristen Schaal).

But Jack has a hidden agenda: he needs to dispense $200,000 worth of weed stashed in the trunk.

As the trio heads south, Jack drops off some of the contraband to a couple of grizzled old hippie pals (Christopher Lloyd and Peter Fonda). Later, the family meets up with Laura’s crude and philandering ex-husband Leonard (Bobby Cannavale). Along the way Jack forms a secret alliance with Henry, who helps his grandpa hide and sell his valuable stash while

It’s another road-trip flick, yes, but Boundaries is also an engaging and unconventional offering that’s blessed with a savvy and edgy screenplay from Shana Feste, who also directs the project.

And really, no movie can miss with such delicious scenes as when irascible Jack punches out slimeball Leonard, who responds with, “I thought you were a Buddhist.”

“Oh, I am,” declares our antihero, “but you bring out the right-wing Christian in me.”

For more than 80 years, Social Security has provided for the elderly as part of their daily mission. In cases where older people are incapable of representing themselves, Social Security looks to family or friends to serve as their financial managers through the Representative Payment Program.
