aul McCartney was without a doubt my favorite Beatle. Those puppy dog eyes and mop-top hairdo that fringed his eyebrows. That charming smile. Yep. I was going to marry him.

Then he saw her standing there. Linda.

And that was that.

Throughout the sixties, Paul and the Beatles played the soundtrack of my youth -- from the sweet Love Me Do to the psychedelic adventure Strawberry Fields Forever. Their music led the tumult of the times as they

helped define a counterculture that questioned beliefs about race, sexuality, women’s rights, Vietnam and so forth. Then one day John Lennon was shot (1980). And George Harrison died of cancer (2001). The Beatles remain the best-selling band in history.

Now Paul will make his way to Tampa’s Amalie Arena for a July 10th show, part of his One On One tour.

He’ll be returning to the city for the first time since 2005 when he played at

Venice Celebrates Its 90th

Unfortunately, two terrorist hijackers who did the unthinkable during the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center were trained at the former Huffman Aviation flight school in Venice.

To commemorate this city’s 90th year, here are a few of the planned events (subject to change).

• A showcase exhibit on the city’s birth and growth, “Venice at 90: A Retrospective,” runs through July 31st at the Venice Museum & Archives.

• On June 10, a Roaring ‘20s Costume Ball, a fundraiser for Venice Heritage Inc. and the Venice Museum & Archives, will be held at the historic Hotel Venice on Nassau St., which is now The Summit at Venice.

• Venice walking tours of historic sites and the picturesque downtown will be given regularly.

So shall you visit this lovely community, don’t forget to pick up a shark’s tooth on the beach in the morning to remind you of all that Venice has to offer.

Celebrate Canada’s Sesquicentennial: A Train Ride through the Canadian Rockies

t’s Canada’s 150th birthday this year, so as we look for ways to celebrate, I can’t think of anything better than a cool, refreshing trip to the Canadian Rockies, where the sightseeing is nothing less than spectacular.

Oh Canada, here we come.

Rocky Mountaineer, a Canadian railtour company, offers a variety of distinctive routes in Western Canada to choose from.

The “Rainforest to Gold Rush” route travels through the gold rush and timber country of the Cariboo along the Fraser River where you might see black bears or grizzlies on your way from North Vancouver through the mountain destinations of Whistler, Quesnel and Jasper. They need to be age 18 or older, have a U. S. mailing address and a valid email address, and have a Social Security number. Explain the importance of reviewing their earnings

record each year since Social Security uses the record of earnings to compute their future benefits. As they start their first major job and begin saving, they’ll be able to monitor the growth of the estimates of benefits available to them.

Father’s Day “Pastport” I

t was time to renew my “pastport.” Seemed like I’d just done it less than a year ago.

Just as well, I hated that photograph; made me look like a criminal or a terrorist. Evidently others thought so too, since I’d often had my luggage searched at airports.

‘Click! Click! Click!

Click!’ I had four pictures from which to choose. Naturally I went for the one that most resembled Sean Connery in Hunt for Red October.

I’m now on a northbound bullet train, taking me to visit someone very special, someone I’d not seen in over

40 years. Today is June 18th, and this is going to be the Father’s Day to end all Father’s Days. I lean back and gaze out of the window. The countryside whizzes by so fast. It reminds me of a library visit a long time ago, when

I scanned through newspapers on a microfilm projector, looking for an article. After fifteen minutes, I was dizzy to the point of nausea.

I close my eyes and drift back to my childhood. Dad and I are fishing together at Twin Lakes.

Next he’s letting me shoot an arrow using his big re-curve bow. That trip to the ‘Ice Follies’ in Cincinnati where I got to see Hopalong Cassidy in-person. Now we’re off to my first Cub Scout Jamboree, where I had a part in the talent show.

“Sir! Sir!” I’m jostled out of my reverie by the C&C agent as he nudges me. They used to call them “conductors”, now it’s “Conductor and Customs.”

“Ticket please!”

“Oh, certainly. Here you are.”

He punches it by hand, just like in the old days.

“Thank you Sir. And your pastport?”

I hand it to him, realizing we’ve slowed down and are approaching the terminal. We come to a stop. I retrieve my bag and make my way towards the exit, looking out of each window as I pass.

There he is. Dad’s standing on the platform, looking just as I’d pictured him, maybe about twentyfive years old; fifteen years my junior. Not sure how to approach him, don’t want to frighten him. I just want to become friends and get to know him better. I must be very careful to not say or do anything that could possibly alter his future, or mine, for that matter.

Father’s Day Fare Dad’s Day is on its way. Treat your favorite guy with a refreshing tropical ambrosia salad and tender juicy ribs he doesn’t have to grill.

Ambrosia Salad Ingredients: 1 (8 oz.) container frozen whipped topping, thawed 2 1/2 c. shredded coconut 1/2 c. chopped walnuts 1 (8 oz.) can fruit cocktail, drained 1 (8 oz.) can pineapple chunks, drained 1 (11 oz.) can mandarin oranges, drained 3 c. miniature marshmallows 1 (10 oz.) jar maraschino cherries, drained 1 tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tsp. ground cinnamon Directions: • In a large bowl, combine the whipped topping, coconut, chopped nuts, fruit cocktail, pineapple, mandarin oranges, marshmallows, cherries, nutmeg and cinnamon.

• Mix together well and refrigerate for 30 to 45 minutes.

Crock Pot Ribs Ingredients: 2-plus racks of baby back or St. Louis-style ribs Favorite barbecue sauce (I love Sticky Fingers and Johnny Harris brands) Water Brown sugar Garlic powder Salt and pepper Directions: • Sprinkle ribs with brown sugar, garlic, salt and pepper to your liking. You can marinate these overnight or for only an hour or so. Refrigerate.

• Place ribs in the crock pot. If you are cooking more than one rack, stand them up along the side of the crock with the meatiest side at the bottom.

• Mix 2 c. barbecue with 1 c. water. Pour over ribs.

• Cook on low for 5 hours for 2 racks (make sure you add time if you cook more racks –around 1 hr. per rack).

• Remove ribs from crock when cooked and put on a cookie sheet, membrane side up. Careful, they will fall apart.

• Baste them with a fresh coat of your favorite barbecue sauce.

• Broil in oven for 2 to 4 minutes. Don’t let them burn. They will crisp up a bit.

• Repeat the last two steps on the other side.

ong relegated to cookies and cakes, is this hardshelled, hairy fruit emerging as the new superfood? Or is it just super hype?

We’ve analyzed its body parts and here’s what we found.

COCONUT WATER, found only in young, green coconuts, is what some are calling Mother Nature’s sports drink. That’s because coconut water is rich in potassium. If you like the taste and can afford the price, coconut water is a relatively low-cal drink that can replenish electrolytes and keep you hydrated.

Those with kidney disease should avoid or limit their intake.

COCONUT MILK is a white liquid that forms as a coconut matures. It’s high in healthy saturated fatty

acids, calories and lauric acid which is easily absorbed in the body to produce energy. Coconut milk is perfect for those with dairy, nut, or grain-based allergies.

Dr. Axe, a well-known, certified natural medicine doctor, reports coconut milk can aid in heart health, weight loss, digestion, physical performance, joint discomfort, and control of diabetes. You’re a nature lover. Your heart is in the right place, but sometimes even the best intentions can have harmful effects. Consider these corrective measures to avoid unintended consequences on species you wish to help.

Problem: Neonicotinoid pesticides and the birds and the bees.

Neonicotinoids (neonics) are popular pesticides because of their low toxicity levels to humans and other vertebrates as well as their effectiveness against insects. Unfortunately that also includes the good guys, like bees, which are nature’s pollinators. Neonics, a class of insecticides chemically similar to nicotine, are now a suspected link to colony collapse disorder and the rapid decline of bees. They can harm our feathered friends as well when runoff from neonicotinoid pesticides gets absorbed into soil and coats the seeds that they eat. If the label has acetamiprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, imidacloprid (to name a few) as an active ingredient, it’s a neonic.

Solution: Stop using neonics and other pesticides in your yard. Don’t worry about perfect looking plants. Allow dandelions and clover in your yard, bees love it. Bees also

People plant non-native Scarlet Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) to help feed monarch butterfly caterpillars. Harm is caused when the non-native milkweed doesn’t die back in the winter like native milkweed does. Monarchs then don’t migrate like they’re supposed to and stay in Florida for the winter. This can lead to disease and unhealthy monarch populations.

Solution: Go native. Consult with your gardening center and plant Florida native milkweeds like butterfly weed, swamp, white Monarch butterfly and bumble bee on Swamp milkeed, and green. If you have tropical U.S. Fish and Wildlife milkweed you can cut it back or other flowering plants. ast month we discussed how changes in interest rates can affect the value of individual bonds. Since the fixed income exposure in many investors’ portfolios comes from open-end bond mutual funds, it is also useful to consider how interest rates affect these investments.

There are some important differences between an individual bond and a bond mutual fund. While an individual bond has a face amount, stated coupon rate, and maturity date, a mutual fund that owns bonds has none of these things. It has a current dividend yield, which is essentially the weighted average yield of all the individual bonds that it holds. This dividend yield can increase or decrease, depending on the yields of bonds being purchased or sold within the fund. In a very general sense, if interest rates rise, yields on bond mutual funds would also be expected to rise.

The most important difference, however, between individual bonds and bond mutual funds is that the funds do not have a maturity date. Everything else equal, this effectively makes their value more sensitive to changes in interest rates.

When evaluating any fixed income investment, including a bond mutual fund, the metric which measures its price sensitivity to changes in interest rates is called duration. The lower the duration, the less sensitive the price is to interest rate swings. The higher the duration, the more interest rate movements will

affect its price. It follows that if investors were to expect a falling interest rate environment ahead, longer duration bond funds would perform better; conversely, shorter duration bond funds would be expected to perform better if expectations were for a rising interest rate environment.

Changes in interest rates can lead to another risk that is unique to bond mutual funds—redemption risk. This is the risk that other shareholders of the bond fund will sell their shares, which in turn could force the manager of the bond fund to liquidate certain holdings at less than ideal prices in order to raise cash to meet these redemptions. Doing so could potentially cause the price of the fund to decline further. Essentially redemption risk exaggerates the pain for those shareholders who remain in the fund.

While nobody can tell you when interest rates will rise in a meaningful way, it is not a question of if this increase will hurt the price of bond investments, but just a question of how much.

t was a bright sunny day in February 2014 when retired Master Sgt. James Smith was driving home from his teaching job and a dump truck spilled gravel onto his path, causing his motorbike to slide and crash

on the pavement. The force hurled his 175-pound body over 100 yards into a ditch. Despite wearing a helmet, he was unconscious. When he awoke, he was in an ambulance racing to the hospital emergency room. The

prognosis wasn’t good. His back was broken, a surefire lifetime sentence to a wheelchair.

“Why me?” were his first words.

Robotic suits have been around for years in movies such as Avatar, The Edge of Tomorrow, Elysium and Matrix III, but today the suits are no longer relegated to science fiction.

At the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa, paralyzed veterans are learning to walk again thanks to a VA-funded, exoskeletal, assisted-walking research project using the ReWalk 6.0. This wearable robotic device provides powered hip and knee motion to enable individuals with spinal cord injury to stand upright, walk, turn, and climb and descend stairs. The system allows independent, controlled walking while mimicking the natural gait pattern of the legs.

Although Smith had accepted his new role in a wheelchair, he still yearned for a chance to walk again.

He had always been active. He had spent 22 years in the

Marine Corps as a rifleman; he fought bravely during his six tours in Iraq. He retired with multiple medals and awards. “I wanted to be the best so I joined the best,” Smith said.

In 2016, he volunteered and qualified to be a participant in the research project.

“Walking again was something I only experienced in my dreams,” said Smith, 48, donning the space age outfit. “I can`t believe it`s really happening to me.”

The suit fits snuggly and runs on rechargeable batteries that last for a full day of basic use or up to six hours of continuous walking.

With the push of a button, Smith stands up -- his first time in three years. Then with another command through his wrist remote, he walks. Crutches help him stay balanced. At first he needs the aid of therapists to guide his every step.

It was a magical moment.

Brittany Durant, research nurse coordinator for the project, works with the patients to adjust the fit and comfort of the suit and to teach skills such as standing, walking, turning, stopping and sitting. She said helping patients like Smith has been one of the more rewarding facets of her work at the VA hospital.

“We get the opportunity to see their advancement from learning to simply stand and maintain balance, to walking with little assistance,” she said.

In June 2014, the ReWalk 6.0 became the first exoskeleton system to receive FDA approval for personal use (in the home and community) as well as rehabilitation.

The retail price is $95,000; insurance coverage varies. In December 2015, the Department of Veterans Affairs issued a national policy to procure ReWalk exoskeleton systems for any eligible, qualifying veteran.

ReWalk Robotics Ltd. is collaborating with Harvard University’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering to focus on the development of “soft suit” systems for the treatment of stroke, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), mobility limitations for the elderly and other medical applications.

Their famous warrior, Osceola, was an elegant and handsome chief who masterminded successful battles, took punitive action against anyone who cooperated with the white man, and stood as a national symbol of the Seminoles’ strong reputation for nonsurrender. He was skillful as an orator and brave in conflict. He was captured and died in a Charleston, S.C. prison in 1838.

In 1842, President John Tyler ordered the end of military action against the Seminoles. Over $20 million had been spent, 1,500 U.S. soldiers had died, and no formal peace treaty had been signed.

The Seminoles finally gained federal recognition in 1957 and became the Seminole Tribe of Florida, thereby maintaining their sovereignty. In 1979, they exercised that sovereignty

and challenged the State of Florida in regards to the operation of high stakes gaming operations. They won and helped pave the way for Native American tribes across the country to operate and maintain gambling facilities.

the whole structure rose, shuttered and fell back into place.

Perhaps sensing my fear, my dad grounded my swing set so I could swing as high as I wanted, unencumbered by the fear that the entire mass would become airborne.

I remember the first time I planted my bottom on the red metal seat, bent my knees and swung my feet forward, looking at the tips of my white Keds and aiming for the moon. “Okay, Daddy. You can push me now,” I screamed. “Real high.”

The years passed. I went to college. Married. Divorced. Remarried.

Had kids and baked cookies. Drove the car pools. Always with back-up, behind-the-scenes coaching from my dad.

More years passed. My own kids moved away. I still came home to visit.

By then, the swing set was old and rusty. The push-off mound was sunken in with shallow gullies. The chains, disjointed.

Like me, the swing set was well past the half-century mark. Despite this, we were both firmly grounded, strong and steady.

On this day, I approached the red seat warily. Can it hold me? I settled in. Slowly pushed off and up. I arched my back and hung on tight.

“Okay, Daddy,” I said softly to myself. “You can push me now. Real high.”

ot surprisingly, one of my earliest memories is of my father telling me, “You’re run of the mill, Iris. Just run of the mill.”

Maybe it was my first lesson in intuition, insight and savvy. I knew by the way he said it that what he meant was, “You’re special. Very special.”

And so the dance began.

In 1947, my father was a young GI coming home from Europe to his war bride, my mother. I was born within a year of his returning stateside, part of the first wave of baby boomers.

Eventually my mom and dad moved out of my grandparent’s house into their own place. The wooden kitchen cabinets were painted yellow. A “Lazy Susan” was bought for Sunday night dinners of corned beef, pickles and rye bread. A deep maroon paisley couch with tassels was picked out and delivered.

So was a metal swing set.

The swing set was new, bright, shiny, massive and all mine.

My dad worked all day assembling the metal monster as I sat and watched. After hours of tedious labor, he dug four holes in which to place the swing set’s main poles. To my surprise, he set the poles in concrete.

Favorite musical memories from years gone by

eorge and Ira Gershwin’s iconic I Got Rhythm came from the 1930 musical Girl Crazy; three versions of the song soon ran up the hit record charts.

Fast-forward to 1967 to the popular music world of psychedelic

experimentation, drugs, long hair and funky outfits. Enter a vocal group of four clean-cut, short-haired, suitwearing New Jersey guys, looking more Wall Street than Woodstock. They say they want to record older songs— some from as far back as the 1920s and 1930s—in the hope of achieving success alongside the Doors and Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane.

Hmmn. Well, good luck, guys.

The cocky quartet liked to take “oldies” and add their own spin—rich, tight vocal harmonies wrapped around upbeat tempos, elaborate orchestration defining each punched-up remake, and the strong, confident tenor/falsetto of

Bob Miranda out front. Somehow, this worked.

“We met one night at a dance in East Paterson, New Jersey,” Miranda explained on www.classicbands.com.

“We actually met in the men’s room (where there was an echo). We sounded pretty darned good, so we decided to get together.” They became the Four Graduates.

Miranda later became a songwriter in the musicpublishing office of the Tokens, former singers who had hit big with The Lion Sleeps Tonight years earlier.

When the Tokens started a record label called B. T. Puppy, Miranda brought in his other three Graduates pals and auditioned. The Four Graduates then morphed into the more modern-sounding Happenings.

For their Gershwin remake, Miranda composed a brief introduction: In this vast and troubled world, we sometimes lose our way But I am never lost; I feel this way because…

Once the Happenings’ version kicked into high gear moments later, the listener was hopelessly hooked. “I Got Rhythm was a natural for us,” Miranda explained. “There was so much space in the song for us to put these unique vocal hooks…We just knew when we played it back that it was a hit.”

When Miranda was asked by Happenings fans just who wrote the song, he would answer that it was George Gershwin.

Sometimes the response was, “Oh, is he in the group?”

F Until its lucky streak ended in 2016, Florida has been hurricane-free for a decade. Historically, we have more hurricane landfalls than any other state. Texas is second; Louisiana third. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th. Be prepared.

To prepare for a hurricane, you should take the following measures: • Make plans to secure your property.

Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.

• Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.

• Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed.

• Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.

• Determine how and where to secure your boat.

• Consider building a safe room.

If a hurricane is likely in your area, you should: • Listen to the radio or TV for information.

• Secure your home, close storm shutters, and secure outdoor objects or bring them indoors.

• Turn off utilities if instructed to do so. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.

• Turn off propane tanks.

• Avoid using the phone, except for serious emergencies.

• Moor your boat if time permits.

• Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning and

flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water.

You should evacuate under the following conditions: • If you are directed by local authorities to do so. Be sure to follow their instructions.

• If you live in a mobile home or temporary structure—such shelters are particularly hazardous during hurricanes no matter how well fastened to the ground.

• If you live in a high-rise building— hurricane winds are stronger at higher elevations.

• If you live on the coast, on a floodplain, near a river, or on an inland waterway.

• If you feel you are in danger.

If you are unable to evacuate, go to your wind-safe room. If you do not have one, follow these guidelines: • Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows and glass doors.

• Close all interior doors—secure and brace external doors.

• Keep curtains and blinds closed. Do not be fooled if there is a lull; it could be the eye of the storm—winds will pick up again.

• Take refuge in a small interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level.

• Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object.

From June 9 through August 18, the art center will present three quilt exhibits and a textile exhibit that showcase the breadth of work being done with fabric today, much of it inspired by nature, personal or world events.

“New Quilts from An Old Favorite: New York Beauty” is an exhibit of 18 finalists and winning quilts by quiltmakers responding to a challenge from the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky: to create original quilts in imaginative ways based on the classic New York Beauty block pattern.

“SAQA Florida: Growth.” runs concurrently in DFAC’s Douglas-Whitley and Meta B. Brown Galleries. Florida-based members of Studio Art Quilt Associates share their fiber works created on the themes of “Growth,” such as development, progress, advancement, expansion, etc.
