Foraging Florida One man’s quest to “Eat the Weeds” brings finding wild edibles in Florida to the fore.

One trip with Deane around Tarpon Lake certainly makes it look like a breeze, as students steadily chomp little root vegetables and hand-picked wild cucumbers, stopping only to stare at the leaves that surround them - marveling at what suddenly feels like a whole new (edible) world.

O

n a warm Sunday afternoon in Palm Harbor, Florida, 11 curious plant lovers gather at a local park to meet none other than Green Deane, the “most watched forager in the world.” Amassing over 3 million views on his informative YouTube channel “Eat the Weeds,” Green Deane is more than just a nature boy - he’s a practical and philosophical expert on edible plants and he’s not afraid to share the wealth of his knowledge with others. In fact, he’s a truly prolific educator, dedicated to helping Floridians all across the state learn to “eat wild,” just like him. Attend one of his on-location foraging classes offered in various locations throughout the Sunshine State, and you’ll get more than your money’s worth in wild snacks right on the trail, as well as plenty of advice from Deane himself on how to make your own backyard an enviable edible haven.

“I definitely came for the gardening advice,” says Katie, 60, an attendee at Green Deane’s foraging class in Palm Harbor.

Katie, a St. Petersburg resident and retiree, found out about the class through Deane’s website and says it was also her desire to reconnect with nature that drew her to the class. “Our modern world doesn’t leave us with a lot of options to feel close to the earth,” she says. “So I try my best to make our backyard as much a part of the natural world as I can. When I found Deane’s website and learned he taught anyone who wanted to learn how to forage, I knew I had to check it out.”

Katie and others follow Green Deane as he meanders through their local weeds, and the famous forager points out a stunning number of munchable plants at every turn - rattling off their latin names, other places to find them and how to prepare them - making it crystal clear Deane’s no amateur forager. In fact, he comes from a long line of plant pickers and eaters.

“Both my mother and my grandmother foraged particularly when they wanted to gossip without men around,” Deane revealed. “They would go walking in the forest and I would see what they picked.

My personal ah-ha moment came when I saw wild raspberries one day and made the connection between them and raspberries sold in the grocery stores.”

Decades later, Deane’s childhood discovery that he could feed himself right from the comfort of his local forest has blossomed into a life devoted to nutritious wild edibles, and the development of a knowledge base that serves as a personal way of giving back to his fellow hungry humans. Through his how-to YouTube videos, his blog musings and his classes exploring the very best of Florida foraging, Deane seeks to serve not only those hungry for flora, but modern society as a whole - the evolution of which has left its members dramatically nature-starved.

“For most of human history, nature has been humanity’s grocery store, pharmacy and hardware store. It sustained life,” he muses. “Now most people are estranged from nature. I think reintroducing people to their heritage and how that can make them feel is a worthy and moral goal.”

Deane, now 66, began educating others about the fascinating world of edibles about a decade ago or so, as “life wound down.” He says his impetus for making his love of edibles a public pursuit happened when he became intrigued at how little those involved in the green movement actually knew about the green world around them.

“I really started making the educational materials for friends,” he said. “It just grew from there.”

Deane freely admits Florida’s unpredictable climate, varying geography and overwhelming number of imported ornamentals makes it quite a difficult place to forage. “But if you can forage in Florida you can forage anywhere,” he says - and notes one of the state’s highpoints is that those who know where to look really can find significant and varied edible plants every day of the year.

Cited by NPR in 2015 as America’s Forgotten Native ‘Tea’ Plant, the leaves of the Yaupon Holly tree are yours for the picking throughout Florida. Over 1,000 years ago, Native Americans prepared the leaves as tea for energy (it’s loaded with caffeine), and even used it in purification rituals. Now sold in trendy tea shops in Austin, TX and Asheville, NC (pictured) here are a few tips to forage and prepare the tea yourself: 1. Pick young leaves and stems. 2. Lightly toast them in the oven at 300* until they start to brown.

3. Add 1 tbsp of mixture to 2 cups boiling water. 4. Steep for 3 minutes and enjoy.

While some of Green Deane’s students attend looking for a closer relationship to nature, good edible gardening tips, or just an interesting way to spice up a vegan diet, personal chef Shane Richeson attended Deane’s Palm Harbour class on business. His mission: introduce the fabulous world of Florida foraging to the clients he elaborately cooks for. Founder of the delightfully creative instagram account @PlateLickersAnonymous, Richeson says his role as a personal chef allows him more freedom to experiment, and foraging reveals to his guests a side of food they might not know at all.

“When I incorporate foraged food into a traditionally formal recipe, there’s something very intriguing about it to my guests. It really adds a talking point and a wow-factor to the dish.”

Deane echos David’s sentiments of approaching foraging as a special way to reinvigorate one’s concept of food.

“Wild plants, and cultivated wild plants, provide new flavors, textures, nutritional profiles, and bacterial compliments as well as being unmodified and less chemicalized - all of which appeals to health and socially conscious people. Besides, knowing you can do something, like find your own food is empowering. It has its own satisfaction - just in and of itself.”

the voice of the american veteran n the evening of October 24th, veterans were the real winners when presidential candidate Donald Trump took some private time before his Tampa rally at the Mid-Florida amphitheater to hold a roundtable discussion with 15 U.S. military veterans, men and women from all walks of life.

This diverse group was an impressive representation of the broad spectrum of courageous and devoted individuals found in the American military. Those awaiting Trump included a Green Beret Special Ops instructor, a Gold Star family honoring their lost loved one and an Army veteran now helping his fellow servicemen and women as an employee at James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, just to name a few.

The group gathered in a room wellguarded by Trump’s secret service team, and waited steps from the main stage, while just outside a capacity crowd of close to 20 thousand Americans were clamoring for Trump to appear.

sioner and head of “Veterans for Trump” supporter Chris Hart, moderated the event and introduced Mr. Trump to those who’d served our country with honor.

Contrary to the volatile persona portrayed by the media, Trump embodied a great respect for the veterans by listening quietly and granting his full attention to each veteran’s personal story and the challenges they’ve faced after their tour of duty. A breath of fresh air from the political circus, the tales of humanity expressed at the round table offered a fascinating glimpse into the real issues confronted by today’s veterans.

56 yr. old retired Army Special Forces veteran and President of Global Executive Management James Williamson broached the subject of the rampant abuse of prescription pain pills by veterans all across the country, an epidemic shown to have propelled a jump in the suicide rate, which at present he reported, has reached an astounding figure of 22 veteran suicides a day. Presenting such a heartbreaking issue as suicide after ser-

vice was no easy task, but Williamson said he found it cathartic just to articulate the issue in such an intimate setting with a potential leader of the nation. At a table of less than 20, Williamson served as a voice to the voiceless, vowing not to abandon such a tragic issue affecting the lives of millions.

“I left with a sense that Trump knew what was going on in the VA system, and he gave me a firm commitment that he would place the veteran above politics,” said Williamson.

The most touching moment of the evening came when Gold Star family members Kris and Wendy Hager, told their heartbreaking tale to Trump, hon-

oring their son, Army Cpl. Frank Gross, who died in combat in Afghanistan in July 2011. Gross was only 25 years old when he died. “A day doesn`t go by that I don`t feel the pain of losing my son,” said Mr. Hager, and it doesn’t get better with time.”

Issues like this aren’t solved overnight, and a worthy solution often feels out of reach in an entire term of presidency, let alone a campaign roundtable.

While there are no easy answers, the stories of those who risk their lives protecting our country can’t be heard loud enough. The battlewounds suffered by the families, the loved ones and the veterans among us, are undoubtedly the wounds of a nation.

When it melts, 4 tbsp of flour make a rue. Finally, add chicken broth until slightly soupy. Removing sauté pan from heat, stir in turkey pieces - and kale or spinach - and pour it into the prepared crust. Sprin-

Through the help of North Carolina and Tennessee locals, as well as $2 million from the United States government and a substantial donation by John D. Rockefeller (to the tune of $5 million dollars) the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was created and this special piece of land forever preserved.

Home to hundreds of 100 year old trees Most national parks have 20 native trees; the Smokies tout over 100 native tree species, a third of which are over 100 years old! Even FDR was taken with the Smokies’ trees and its history: “There are trees here that stood before our forefathers ever came to this continent; brooks that still run as clear as on the day the first pioneer cupped his hand and drank from them. In this Park, we shall conserve these trees, the pine, the red-bud, the dogwood, the azalea, the rhododendron, and the thrush for the happiness of the American people.”

COPD Treatment Takes Center Stage

he world will never forget the momentous day when four young men from Liverpool, England, walked onto the stage of the Ed Sullivan show in 1964.

The Fab Four strolled onstage, squinting in the glare of the lights and smiling at the squealing fans, and that grainy black and white image became the music history icon of the “British Invasion.”

Stem cell research appeared on the world stage with much less fanfare.

There were no screaming fans or standing ovations when doctors conducted the first stem cell procedure in the form of a bone marrow transplant in 1956. The painstaking hours scientists spent researching and studying cells in laboratories across the world passed unremarked upon in the pages of Life Magazine. Even in 2012, when John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka won a Nobel Prize for their discovery that “mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent,” enthusiasm was limited mostly to the medical community.

The advent of stem cell research may seem inconsequential in comparison to the rise of the Beatles or Elvis Presley, but its impact on the medical industry is nothing less than revolutionary. Although the ethical implications of using embryonic stem cells have a high-profile and controversial history, knowledge of adult stem cells—cells present inside the body of every adult, remains relatively obscure. Adult stem cells live in the blood or bone marrow, and can be extracted and reintroduced into different parts of the body, as needed.

Some stem cells can re-specialized to mimic whatever type of cell they are near. For example, when bone marrow stem cells are extracted, isolated and reintroduced to the lungs of a patient with a progressive lung disease, the stem cells have the potential to morph into lung cells. The hope is that the new cells will be disease-free and will promote healing and potentially return lung function. For someone suffering from a debilitating disease, such investigative stem cell therapy could mean the difference between struggling for air and singing “Twist and Shout” in the shower.

Physicians at the Lung Institute (lunginstitute.com) have been performing such procedures since 2013, increasing the quality of life for over 83 percent of the patients they’ve treated as reported by the patients themselves in a recent study. During a stem cell procedure, cells are extracted from the patient’s blood or bone marrow tissue. The cells are then isolated and returned intravenously. This outpatient procedure is completed over three days and is considered minimally invasive. According to the Lung Institute’s Senior Medical Director, Jack Coleman, Jr., M.D., “stem cells are important because they offer an alternative approach. Instead of looking at symptoms simply to make the patient more comfortable, investigative stem cell therapy can potentially target the disease itself, challenging conventional medicine’s fatalistic mindset that there’s nothing more we can do.”

Nobel prize-winning folk rock legend returns to Florida with half a century’s music in tow

ome say music is one of humanity’s greatest accomplishments - its ability to transcend the mundane and express the unexpressible elevate it beyond mere thoughts and emotions, to a language unrivaled in its piercing etheriality. The best music may even eclipse time and space - daring to touch the intangible - the human soul.

While masterpieces like Ava Maria stir the spirit with dramatic drawn-out notes and chilling tones, for those who love a story weaved with words ripped raw, straight from the heart, there is no greater storytelling magician than the infamous Bob Dylan.

And after 54 years of creating stunning lyricism that captured the sentiments of his fellow Americans, Dylan has been awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. In the words of the Swedish Academy, Dylan is recognized for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition,” and for his collosal chronocling of the human condition, noting his albums span the social issues of “man, religion, politics and love....as an artist, he is strikingly versatile.”

Most famous for chronicling the suffocating social unrest of the 1960’s with songs like “Blowin in the Wind,” which partly derived its melody from the traditional slave song, “No More Auction Block,” Dylan’s apparent deep understanding of young American angst quickly established him as the voice of a generation - a label he has long rebuffed.

While he did mix in humor, stream-ofconsciousness blues and even a few love songs, there was no denying that the implicit sentiments of unwavering principals, nonconformity and moral authority dripping from his lyrics elevated him to a social hero, speaking the unspoken outrage of the common man.

Perhaps most impressive about the “voice of a generation” long past, is both the resonance of Dylan’s early music with socially and politically-minded young people year after year after year, and the fact that this wildly prolific artist has continued to create culturally relevant music for over five decades.

Dylan has the status of an icon. His influence on contemporary music is profound, and he is the object of a steady stream of secondary literature.”

While some argue present-day Dylan and his music are a thing of the past, the reality is he still sells out venues at lightning speed and has never stopped writing and recording critically acclaimed material, like his 2015 album release, “Shadows In the Night,” and his latest release “Fallen Angels,” which reached #7 on the U.S. albums charts.

Never one to shy away from speaking his mind, Dylan defended the continuation of his marathon career to an outspoken fan, an incident witnessed and admired by fellow rock legend Tom Petty. Petty recalls, “I saw Dylan getting criticized in Australia by this guy who

was saying, ‘Your new songs aren’t as relevant as your old songs.’ And Dylan said, ‘Well, I’m out here writing songs.

What are you doing?’ You know, like a whole generation is out there driving BMWs and trying to be lawyers, and at least I’m trying to do something. I thought that was pretty relevant.”

Petty is one of many rock royalty who openly exalt Dylan; even Beatle George Harrison sings his praises.

“Dylan is so brilliant,” Harrison says.

“To me, he makes William Shakespeare look like Billy Joel.”

Perhaps the greatest summation of Dylan’s talent and the honor he continues to deserve came from Tom Waits, declaring, “Suffice it to say Dylan is a planet to be explored. For a songwriter, Dylan is as essential as a hammer and nails and a saw are to a carpenter. His journey as a songwriter is the stuff of myth, because he lives within the ether of the songs.”

fter 25 years, country darling Dolly Parton is back on top - her new release Pure & Simple debuted at #1 not only in the U.S., but, also on the national country charts in Canada, U.K. and Australia. Her first chart-topping album since 1992, Dolly’s definitely back on top - just don’t call it a comeback.

“I never let up,” Dolly told Jimmy Kimmel in October. “I’m always behind the scenes working and when people say I’m having a a comeback I say, well, where’d I go? I thought I was still here.”

For over 50 years, if Dolly wasn’t writing ballads like, “I Will Always Love You,” - later made famous by Whitney Houston - or performing legendary tunes like country classic “Jolene,” she always had plenty of projects on her plate. She not only starred in the 1980 hit comedy 9 to 5, marking her film debut, she also contributed to its soundtrack. She opened her very own theme park aptly named “Dollywood” in 1986, and then in the 90s, she took to exploring her Appalachian roots, collaboratimg with such talents as Alison Krauss and Patty Loveless to record, “The Grass is Blue,” which earned Dolly a Grammy for best bluegrass album in 1999.

Dolly’s no stranger to recognition, clocking in as the most honored female country artist of all time; she’s had 41 Top Ten country albums, 25 number one hits, 25 RIAA certified gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums, more Grammy nominations than any female vocalist (except Beyonce, who broke her record in 2015), not to mention sales of her music, which have topped 100 million units worldwide.

The Backwoods Barbie may be best known for the size of her hair and the size of her figure, but don’t be afraid to take a closer look. Beneath the unforget-

table exterior, Dolly has a great sense of humor and an even greater sense of philanthropy - a spirit of giving that is always grounded in remembering where she came from.

And if you consider Dollywood from an economic perspective, it’s not only a job factory - it brings tons of tourist dollars to the middle of an otherwise poverty-stricken region where Dolly had her humble beginnings.

After all, had it not been for a chance meeting with Johnny Cash at the Grand Ole Opry when Dolly was just a young teenager, the world may have never even heard one of the estimated 3,000 songs Dolly’s penned over the years. “I had a chance to perform there,” she recalled, “and a chance to sit and watch Johnny perform. He’s like the John Wayne of country music.”

When she met Cash on that fateful day, he urged her to follow her dreams, an encouragement that was enough to motivate her to move to Nashville the day after graduating high school. The rest, as they say, is history.

With a career spanning over half a century, Dolly’s climbed many mountains - musical, theatrical, philanthropical - you’d think at 70, Dolly might kick back and enjoy the fruits of her labor.

But Dolly’s idea of “scaling back” is an international tour and a chart-topping album with “scaled-back” production.

Far from the typical glitz and glamour she’s associated with, her new album Pure and Simple is full of strippeddown arrangements, but offers a longdesired glimpse into the 50-year marriage between Dolly and her husband who has long remained a total mystery.

Perhaps Dolly is finally shedding a little light on the relationship because of the longstanding loyalty of her fans.

“I just love what I do,” she says.

redefining the health and wealth of aging Americans, baby boomers’ buying power continues to grow.

n overwhelming number of advertisements may conjure images of glamorous millennials buying what appears to be entire lives online or spending lavishly in-store with chip-activated credit cards in tow, but economic reports reveal it’s the baby boomers who catch the eye of smart money.

Wise marketers follow the figures and the facts don’t lie - baby boomers not only have the most money to spend, they also do the most shopping. And they’ve ushered in the greatest jump in potential earning years (and spending years) ever seen in America. In addition to simply living longer, those born from 1946 to 1964 are entering what used to be thought of as old age in a physical condition much more akin to that of yesterday’s middle-aged consumers. This newfound later-life vitality allows boomers to transform “aging” into a door that’s opening rather than the end of their relevance. True to form, it looks like boomers are changing yet another cultural facet of the new millenium.

Shifting focus to the spenders As international market research groups continue to predict baby boomers and the Generation X population will greatly outspend Millennials this year, more and more retailers are advised to place a greater focus on shoppers 50 years and older. The boomers are highly coveted not only for their sheer size (an estimated 78 million) but also because they have properly put their respective nest eggs aside for retirement, have little debt, active lifestyles, and are capable and qualified buyers.

Recently in Orlando, Joseph Coughlin, founder of the AgeLab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told a group of shopping center owners and developers that retailers would be better off targeting aging generations rather than younger ones.

Addressing the International Council of Shopping Centers Florida Conference, Coughlin noted that 70% of the disposable income in the U.S. is controlled by a demographic that is 50 years old or older, and noted the fascinating Lifestyles After 50 • November 2016 • page 14

trend that more and more boomers are choosing to retire to more urban areas in less populated cities (with univiersity towns a heavy favorite) as opposed to suburban retiement communities isolated from cultural offerings and inspiring events. These progressive ideas about retirement prove boomers are not viewing aging as the end of anything, but rather a whole new beginning, with the precious bonus of life experience right in their back pocket.

Buying power, mighty & matured It’s frequently recognized that Generation Y, the millennials demographic, recently surpassed the baby boomers in size (both have almost 80 million members), but, the reality is, the millennials’ strongest buying power period is still decades away.

As for today, it’s the boomers who are opening their wallets.

“Boomers outspend the other ages in every category,” notes Matt Thornhill, founder of the Boomer Project, a Richmond, Va. - based marketing research and consulting firm.

Backed by great numbers and a refined taste, the boomers make for quite a bountiful consumer group. According to EconomyandMarkets.com,

2. Show your support - place flowers on the graves of veterans and at home proudly display your American flag.

3. Visit a local retirement home. Offer to scan and print larger pictures of their family members so they are easier to see. Enjoy chatting with some elderly veterans while you’re there, and for a real treat ask them to share their stories.

4. If you own a business, offer a special Veteran’s Day discount.

5. Send a sweet care package through Operation Gratitude. If you donate a stuffed animal, Operation Gratitude can create a “Battalion Buddy” to children of deployed soldiers.

ovember is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month - and when it comes to Alzheimer’s, there’s plenty to be aware of. When I travel the country, speaking at events and promoting my book, I inevitably get asked, “How do you know if someone is showing early signs of dementia?” The most obvious sign is forgetfulness, of course, but as I discuss in my book, there were many other signs prior to my mother-in-law’s diagnosis.

On the other hand, don’t let the stigma and the fear of Alzheimer’s overwhelm you to the point that you’re diagnosing a loved one at the first sign of a lost pair of keys. Keep things in perspective by remembering there are many physical (and emotional) reasons that people seemingly lose their short-term memory. A good, thorough physical exam will help rule out simple things such as an infection. If a loved one seems resistant to a physical, but you suspect he or she is becoming more than just “forgetful,” before you approach them about it, try keeping a journal.

I began writing down all the questionable comments and actions as my best attempt to get my mother-in-law the help I knew she deserved.

We all knew something was going on with her memory, but this journal became invaluable when I finally convinced my husband that she needed to see a neurologist. I had detailed accounts that spanned nearly a year. I often forewarn people that most family members will be deep in denial about the illness, and that, believe it or not, this is totally normal. Denial, however, does not change the diagnosis.

very presidential election elicits farreaching effects on the social, political and economical facets of American life, both for the nation as a whole and our individual existence. With the financial climate as volatile as it is, citizens throughout the nation wait with bated breath to see how November 8th will, to put it plainly, affect their bottom line.

How will the election of Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton affect the stock market, the bond market or interest rates?

How will portfolio considerations alter after the race is decided?

Decades as a Certified Financial PlannerTM has taught me that the subject of politics can be quite an emotional one anytime a major election is upon us, but this one will definitely go down in the history books as eliciting some of the most impassioned concern I’ve seen from those interested in protecting their pocketbooks. A couple clients have even suggested liquidating their entire long-term investment portfolio if a specific outcome were to occur. Especially since I consider these clients to be relatively calm and rational folks, it was somewhat surprising to see how the election hysteria could induce them to introduce such a rash, knee-jerk idea.

While I have no better insight than anyone else as to who will ultimately be elected Commander-in-Chief, one thing I do know is that emotion and investing do not mix. Instead, I encourage clients to investigate the actual historical data. Do markets perform better under a Republican or Democratic president? According to a recent Vanguard study on the topic, there’s really very little difference. Going all the way back to 1852, the study found that the Dow Jones Industrial Average returned an average annual return

of 8.97% under Democratic presidents, and an average of 8.66% under Republican presidents. As Blackrock Chief Investment Strategist Russ Koesterich has commented, “Historically, whether a Republican or Democrat occupies the White House has had no statistically significant impact on US equity markets.”

Digging deeper than simply looking at the party of the president, how about when Congress is taken into account?

Considering the period 1901-2016, a study by Ned Davis Research found the following average annual returns for the S&P 500 stock index: Democratic president/Republican Congress 8.6% Republican president/Democratic Congress 2.4% White House/Congress controlled by same party 7.1% Democratic president/split Congress 10.4% Republican president/split Congress -4.3% For the most part, what this data indicates to me is the positive effect of checks and balances. In my experience, markets always prefer some sort of balance, even gridlock, rather than extremes. Currently the political betting markets suggest this outcome, with the Democrats favored to take the White House and Senate, and the Republicans likely to retain the House.

Presidents always get too much credit and too much blame, when in reality it all gets back to the old political phrase, “it’s the economy, stupid.” Just remember what the long-term drivers of stock prices are - corporate profitability, worker productivity and global competitiveness. Apropos of the election season, as famed investor Benjamin Graham has said, “In the short run, the market is a voting machine, but in the long run, it is a weighing machine,” a metaphor suggesting that in the short term prices are driven by sentiment while in the long term trends are driven by something you can actually measure more concretely - financial results.

SIMPLE STEPS TO BETTER HEALTH: November: Breathe

Our bodies require and love oxygen.

Something so often taken for granted, adequate breathing is critical for all of our physiological systems to perform 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Yet in today’s modern world where time flies at breakneck speed, breathing is all but forgotten as we mentally cycle through a never-ending to-do list, multitask while constantly looking ahead, or stare for hours into a screen, slowly but surely, we stop breathing correctly.

Just examine your breath right now; is your neck pulling for air instead of your nose? Are your breaths shockingly shallow? Believe it or not, postural patterns caused by shallow and stressed breathing increase pressure on discs all along your spine. It’s also the culprit for many a tight muscle that won’t release.

So, how should we breathe? Like a baby.

The abdomen expands first, then the

chest. Don’t use the neck! In through the nose and out through the mouth, or in and out through the nose for quiet breathing 8 to 10 times per minute.

During breathing exercises, exhale twice as long as inhaling to recruit abs.

Why? Less use of secondary respiratory

muscles lessens your chance of neck pain, headaches and back pain. As your posture improves & the nervous system relaxes, you cant help but feel renewed.

GOAL: Breathe 5-10 full breath cycles,

(pausing 3-5 sec. before nose inhale) twice a day & before falling asleep.

Feel outer abs move lower front ribs downward. See how it makes you feel.

Thanks Paula, for sharing a happy ending to the challenge of going small in such a big world. - Editor When we moved to Florida we downsized. It was a big job, especially since our son was three. Usually people buy a larger house when they’ve got a new nest of children, but our sentiments were quite the opposite. Looking around at our material belongings and our little three-year-old son, we realized there’s actually so much you don’t need. We had a friend help us pack and we donated so much, which is always a gratifying feeling for anyone. In addition to living a new house with less stuff, we also made the transition to a house without stairs, another helpful bonus when a lively little one is running around.

Perhaps the best thing to come from our decision to downsize has been the way it has affected my son’s upbringing and perspective on materialism.
