It takes a village to raise a magazine Dear Readers, When I first joined the Lifestyles team last year, I really wanted to get to know our readers. In writing to such a dynamic Amanda Smith, Editor demographic (and one I wasn’t a part of), it seemed vital to forge an authentic connection with our readership if I was to ever provide fresh content that you all found truly valuable. I wanted to understand your core values, share in your life experiences and glean from all the insight you learned along the way.

In pursuit of this lofty goal, we created a little column called Share Your Story, which poses one engaging question to readers each month, as an invitation to share their stories, opinions and wisdom.

I never could have imagined the deep, heartfelt - sometimes even hilarious - responses that the Share Your Story column would inspire since its advent in early 2016. In July’s issue alone we featured a full page compilation of animal adoption stories sent in by various readers whose lives had changed from rescuing pets. These tender adoption stories ran right alongside reader responses to past Share Your Story questions that continue to elicit replies up to six months later -

everything from opinions about what fashion trends reveal about gender roles, to incredible tales about finding love the second time around.

The outpouring of essays we receive from readers continues to amaze, amuse and inspire the whole Lifestyles team. They remind us all that everyone has a story to tell.

This month’s issue features more reader-submitted content than ever - like vibrant tales of exciting travel adventures and even the story of a rescued pet rooster. It’s been so rewarding to connect with your personal stories, and it’s equally as exciting to help give readers-turnedwriters a platform to share original work they’ve written about their local community, like arts and culture expert Kathy Megyeri’s feature on Hungarian artist Willy Pogany’s work at the Ringling mansion, or former school board executive Madonna Wise’s piece on local gardening efforts in Lake County.

For the past nine months, Lifestyles After 50 has been my baby, nurtured with love, attention, discipline and devotion. Expanding the magazine’s content to include so many more authors has presented opportunities and challenges; the privilege to showcase the work of others and the challenge of letting go. Circumstances this month taught me I truly couldn’t do it alone...and I realized that I really shouldn’t. Engaging strong partners in the content creation process has made this issue a more diverse and dimensional reading experience, and it has reminded me that raising almost anything is better when approached as a communal effort. When a wider community gets involved, it is often the final product - whether child or publication - that benefits from a larger pool of ideas, collaboration and ultimately, unity. ndeed, many like it hot...so just how hot do you want it? The Scoville Heat Scale (SHU) clues us in to the hotness levels of chiles, a spicy surprise of many names, shapes and sizes. From mildly to wildly hot, select anywhere from Pablano (Ancho) 1000-2000; Hatch 10005000, Jalapeño 2500-8000, Serrano 6000-23,000, Manzano 12,000-30,000, Chile de Arbol 15,000-30,000, or Habanero 100,000-300,000 blazing hot units.

Wimpy when it comes to hot peppers? Stick to sweet bell peppers in red, yellow, orange or green - all of which score very low on the SHU scale.

Cooking for a crowd? Two large bell peppers will yield about 2 1/2 cups of sliced peppers. Oh, and an old veggie myth claims those with 3 bumps on the

bottom are much sweeter...and best in salads, while the others are firmer and better for cooking.

Whichever “heat” you choose, you’ll want to select firm, blemish-free and wrinkle-free peppers. A grapefruit spoon is the perfect tool for removing stems, seeds and membranes, and you’ll definitely want to use prep gloves when working with these bursts of hotness! Be especially mindful of the point where the seed is attached to the white membrane that portion has the hottest concentration of capsaicin - the hot stuff in a pepper.

Besides all that flavor, peppers have plenty of great, healthy benefits. In fact, bell peppers have more vitamin C than oranges - as well as plenty of other essential minerals like iron, copper, zinc, potassium, manganese, magnesium and selenium. Hot peppers also have a spe-

100 years of preservation

ugust 25, 2016 marks 100 years since the creation of the National Park Service, a single federal agency intended to oversee national parks, monuments, recreation areas, scenic trails, seashores, historic sites, parkways, reserves, and wild and scenic rivers. Oft referred to as America’s Best Idea, a phrase coined by writer Wallace Stegner, the creation of the National Park Service (NPS) was an entirely original concept - the setting aside of some of the country’s finest natural beauty to be preserved for the public good - and a remarkable turning point in land-use decision making that has since been emulated by countries all across the world. the view,” says Allison Frank who grew up in Tampa and moved to Asheville, North Carolina 18 years ago. “Fifty percent of my business as a real estate agent came from Floridians.”

Making the Florida - North Carolina connection with people interested in buying real estate in the Asheville area continues to be a satisfying endeavor for Frank, who now manages a real estate referral service, specializing in matching buyers with real estate agents because she says she knows “who all the really good agents are.”

Frank says she loves “Asheville’s charm - a small town built in a forest in the mountains, where stunning views are everywhere, the people are kind, there is plenty of art, music, culture and restaurants, the Biltmore mansion - and there are four fabulous seasons that naturally divide life into luscious vignettes,” she says. “My favorite seasons are fall and winter. This morning, I walked for an hour, and I couldn’t do that in July in Florida. I remember my first trip to North Carolina, the 4th of July, 1971, with three other college kids. We hiked in our sandals, camped in tents and hung our food in the trees, which the bears ate. It was cool enough to

wear a jacket in July, and that, to me, was Paradise. I loved the place ever since that first trip.”

So, the Florida-North Carolina connection is about access to beautiful views close enough to reach in a single-day drive, the seasons and cooler climate, quiet, picturesque towns where people are friendly and willing to help you make the most of your time in the area. If you are visiting or moving to areas near Asheville, Franklin, Waynesville and Highlands, you will likely encounter some fellow Floridians you already know. Say hello and pull up a rocker.

“My favorite season in the North Carolina mountains is spring,” says Vicki Bartz who manages community relations for Tidewell Hospice serving Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties. “It’s so beautiful with the dogwoods and so many wildflowers popping out in bloom. We love to sit in our rockers, watch the birds and enjoy the view.”

Vicki and her husband Bob Bartz, president of Manatee Chamber of Commerce, say they love Florida, and they’re not thinking about retiring any time soon. Their home away from home in Franklin is for vacations with family and friends, some-

times enjoying the largest 4th of July fireworks display in western North Carolina. After visiting many areas of North Carolina since 1984, they found the perfect place to buy in 2004. It is in Franklin, centrally located to so many mountainous adventures.

“We have a son, daughter-inlaw and three granddaughters, and they love to come visit Oma and Opa up here in the mountains,” says Vicki Bartz. “My advice to anyone considering buying any property would be to take your time. Franklin was always on our list, but we had a budget and wanted to stay on budget. We visited all over the area before we decided to buy.

When we saw the view, we knew immediately it was the one we wanted.”

Kim Raich Overcash grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida.

She and her husband Michael Overcash often camped and traveled in North Carolina, especially around Asheville and Black Mountain. They moved to Boone, North Carolina and Kim recently earned her Master’s degree in Higher Education, Community College and University Leadership from Appalachian State University (ASU) and she is employed at ASU as associate director of financial aid.

“What I like best about Boone is that it is beautiful and very much in tune with the environment. We wanted to raise our daughter, Caitie, in a smaller town and a safer environment,” says Kim Overcash. “I still love to visit my friends in Florida and have them come and visit us, but I am glad we were able to find our niche here in Boone even with the long, cold winters.

The spring, summer and fall are worth putting up with the winter, even for us Floridians.”

Last month, we received so many responses to our “Share Your Story” challenge inquiring about your best animal adoption stories, that we couldn’t fit them all in one issue! Here’s yet another story from a proud mom, who shares how her daughter’s compassion and determination benefited an animal, and an entire community. - Editor

H

e arrived at my daughter’s door at dusk. She’s not sure why she even looked out to notice him but the look in his soulful eyes told her he was searching for help. Was this dog just lost, my daughter wondered, venturing too far from the place he called home or had he been deliberately abandoned?

She approached him cautiously as not to frighten him or incite him with a strange presence. But maybe he didn’t look at her as a stranger - he seemed to seek her out, as if he instinctively knew she was a friend... or maybe just plain divine intervention stepped in. He let her scratch his ears extending a mutual olive branch that they both meant no herm.

When she put a bowl of water out for this parched traveler, he appeared grateful and drank as if no one had ever given him water or offered any kindness to him before.

The late evening air became chilly and my daughter found the trust and kindness to let him inside. Seeing him in full light made her eyes fill with tears.

He wore a collar so tight it was imbedded into his filthy fur and offered no clue as to his home or identity. The only vague clue was the remains of a broken hook, apparently broken when he pulled loose from having been chained.

My daughter’s conscience told her she should try to find his rightful owners but her heart told her his pitiful condition indicated severe neglect - and he didn’t deserve to be sent back to wherever it was he broke free from.

In less than 24 hours my daughter had fallen in love with this loving little mutt, even renaming him “Jake”. But the following morning forced her to admit this could never be a long-term relationship. Her work requires extensive travel and taking him to work with her was not exactly an option. “Maybe I could pretend he is a seeing-eye service dog”, she said. “For a flight attendant??” I asked.

Admittedly, it wasn’t her best idea.

In the weakened moments the night before, she envisioned him living with her permanently, with endless friends and family offering to babysit him. But in the light of day, she knew that wasn’t his best future. She called area animal shelters to report a lost dog, and when no one claimed him, she knew she had to keep working for him on his behalf. She discovered a program called Safe Harbor Prison Dogs where dogs are placed with foster families who prepare them to work with prison inmates until they can be adopted. Although their program was currently full (with a waiting list), my daughter knew if they just saw Jake, they’d change their minds, she thought.

She drove him to the shelter to introduce him, knowing anyone would fall in love with him and would make an exception to include him in their program.

As it turns out, my daughter was right. Jake is now gainfully employed with Safe Harbor Prison Dogs - thanks to the compassion and persistence of my daughter. (And, as her mom, I wasn’t the least bit surprised when she told me she cried all the way home).

This pair of polarizing public figures’ viewpoints on issues couldn’t be more oppositional; creating nothing short of a truly divisive decision for the American people. All talk of “building a wall” and “social justice for all” aside, Clinton and Trump have both made a few jaw-dropping remarks that call into question their moral character. In the middle of a rough political summer, Clinton saw it fit to make a joke about the simmering scandal around her use of private email while serving as Secretary of State.

“You may have seen I recently launched a Snapchat account, and I love it; those messages disappear all by themselves.”

Then there’s Trump, who’s really left no stone unturned in his commentaries, including POWs. He derided John Mc-

Cain saying, “He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he got captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” Now I certainly wouldn’t want to be judged for the worst thing I ever said, but then again, I’m not running for President. So, tell us: Do these quotes reveal a degradation of American morality, the values our country was built upon, or were they just said in jest? For shock value? What do these statements (and others like them) reveal about a candidate’s character?

er father fought in World War II and her mother worked at home to support the war effort in a munitions plant. The intense stories of her parents and the passion they felt for their country impacted the life of Chris Coad Taylor, the developer of a local publishing company in the Tampa Bay area, JoHazel. The valuable lessons of World War II may be lost to the twenty-first century and beyond…particularly in the sense of patriotism and sacrifice.

Chris who has a background in the art world as a painter, started a publishing company in 2008. In addition to coaching new authors and assisting with all the nuances of publishing, she recruited authors and some precious veterans of World War II, to produce a new book, entitled, Heroes: Voices of History. Chris says, it has been over seventy years since the end of World War II and we are losing the opportunity to speak first-hand with the veterans. My publishing company is documenting the personal accounts direct from the people who lived during this time. Although, we don’t want to make another history book with dates and battles to memorize, what we aim to achieve is a book of personal and engaging stories of the people.

The collection of stories includes accounts about men and women during World War II from both original and contemporary viewpoints. Readers will be fascinated with the impact that mili-

tary service and the intensity of World War II on the “greatest generation” as Tom Brokow coins it, but attention to the day-to-day life will offer insights into institutions. For example a twentysomething today may be skyping and tweeting at their fingertips, while one of the young men or women serving during the decade of the 1940’s relied upon handwritten letters and Victory Mail (VMail), a U.S. Army Postal system that coded the handwritten letter into film that was then printed in the states, to safeguard against misinformation being inadvertently given to the enemy. Accounts of travel, day-to-day life and the emotional impact of war are evidenced in the writings.

Chris is hopeful that readers will engage in history. She has authors, factfinders and volunteers at work on the book. Some sample stories include that of 91 year-old Bill Smith who was one of the first to arrive in Nagasaki when it was possible to re-enter the Japanese community after the atomic bomb. When retiring, how much is really enough?

W

hile it sounds like a cliché, since no clients are exactly the same, I have found the answer to be different for each one. Some are spenders, and therefore need either a very large investment portfolio or a whole lot of energy to keep working well into later years to sustain this kind of lifestyle. Others are savers, having scrimped for so many years that they would never run out of money in 10 lifetimes. Complicating matters is the exceptionally low interest rate environment that has persisted for several years.

Recently there has been a proliferation of planning software that attempts to dig deeper into this complex issue. Most of these incorporate Monte Carlo analysis, which is supposed to project future rates of return, inflation, etc, then generate the likelihood of achieving a particular goal, such as a certain annual income from a portfolio.

While well-intentioned, these are just fancy educated guesses, and sometimes can actually lull clients into a false sense of security, especially if they aren’t realistic when inputting the data. One of the best approaches I have come across is also one of the simplest - a technique promoted by Michael Falk, Chief Investment Strategist at Mauka Capital.

To Falk, everything centers around the principle: “You must immunize for your needs before you even try to optimize (in risky assets) for your wants.” In other words, if you can arrange enough

regular income to cover the basic expenses of life, then you can sustain the risk of investing other assets strategically to cover desirable retirement goals such as travel and entertainment.

The starting point is determining what guaranteed income will be available, which usually consists solely of Social Security, since traditional pensions have become very rare. Then, determine annual required minimum distribution rates from your IRA and 401(k) accounts. If this annual income can cover your basic overhead, this is a great starting point.

Falk advocates reducing this “overhead” by doing things such as paying down the mortgage before you retire, or buying a used vehicle so you don’t have a car payment. Once this overhead is manageable and in balance with your secure income, you can take on more risk with other investment assets to grow your remaining money. In other words, once the “needs” are covered, on to the “wants”.

Falk emphasizes the need to be realistic with the time horizon on how long your money has to last, and stresses the importance of starting to save early to leverage the power of compounding interest. Deciding to save a certain portion of your income starting young can have profound implications for retirement.

While the above is just a summary of Falk’s approach, I would encourage you to explore it further if you find this concept of “needs, then wants” to be appealing in trying to determine when enough is enough in saving for retirement.

Maybe it’s the combination of cucumber and Pinot Grigio that turns hohum chicken into yum-yum appetizers?

Perhaps it’s the spices and smidge of hot pepper sauce? Whatever it is, these little mouthfuls are sure to please your crowd and are the perfect accompaniment to tropical drinks like daiquiris, margaritas and the aforementioned Pinot Grigio— somebody’s gotta finish it!

CUCUMBER & CHICKEN SALAD BITES (Makes 15-30) • 1 1/2 lb. chicken breasts, cooked • 1 8-oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened • 1/4 c. sour cream • 2 Tbsp. Pinot Grigio wine • 1 1/2 tsp. garlic powder • 1 tsp. salt • 1 1/2 tsp. black pepper • 1/2 tsp. dried dill weed • 1/2 tsp. hot pepper sauce • 1 c. cucumber, peeled & diced

Educator’s encore career brings the joy of brain-boosting dance to every body

hen Cynthia Alicea retired from teaching and training educators in June of 2008, she did some consulting for Hillsborough County Schools while exploring options for her ideal encore career.

“I knew when I retired I would do something creative, maybe art and building things with my hands. I did not imagine it would be about dance, but now I see it makes perfect sense.”

Having studied ballet for ten years, then studying jazz, tap, flamenco and other dance genres, Al-icea has always loved to dance. She never tires of learning new ways to move and share the benefits of expressive movement with others. Upon retirement, she joined Forever Moving Dancers, a senior dance group in Tampa. By her second year in retirement, she had decided on her heartfelt encore career, launching Mindful Moves LLC. Focused on the joy of artistic expres-sion through movement, Mindful Moves is a dance program for seniors with varying ability lev-els.

Since launching Mindful Moves LLC, Alicea’s training has been ongoing.

She completed Tools for Health training based on Liz Lerman’s work with the elderly and dance; Teaching Artist workshop at Ruth Eckerd; certified Zumba Gold instructor, Dementia Care Literacy for the Pro-fessional; Dance for Parkinson’s Disease introductory and advanced workshops in New York City, and other educational programs. In September, Alicea will be a presenter at The Creative Age-Global Perspectives on Creativity and Aging 2016 National Center for Creative Aging Leadership Exchange and Conference in Washington, DC. Combining her expertise as an educator with her passion for dance, Alicea keeps learning and bringing the benefits of joyful movement to seniors in a variety of set-

tings, including Westmin-ster Palms, Bon Secours and Azalea Recreation Center in St. Petersburg; Regal Palms, Royal Palms in Largo and Freedom Square in Seminole.

She developed seated dance classes from what she knows about dance, creativity, education and the elderly. In all her classes, participants struggling with Parkinson’s disease, dementia — or other challenges common to the elderly — share in the joy of expressive movement. Alicea also hires and trains facilitators to bring Mindful Moves classes to more participants.

“Research shows that dancing improves brain health — that’s exciting,” says Alicea, citing a study in the New England Journal of Medicine stating, ‘…researchers found that only one of the activities studied— dance—lowered participants’ risk of dementia… dancing involves both a

mental effort and social interaction and that this type of stimulation helped reduce the risk of dementia.’

ince 1947, the Dade City Garden Club has unearthed the work ethic and community spirit of the picturesque, historic community of Dade City. In 1994, the club launched an annual tradition of honoring spots of significance with ornamental beauty as a way to commemorate the narratives of Dade City.

The 23rd historic ornament in the series to be unveiled in 2016 is the local historic hospital, closed in 1985. They have honored many locations including the historic Pasco County Courthouse, the Pasco County Fair, the Florida Pioneer Museum & Village, and most recently in 2015, the 102 year-old mission church, St. Rita’s Catholic Church, constructed in 1912, which was sold for $1.00 to the Garden Club for its home and relocated to 5th St. S in 1976 where it remains today.

2016’s historic ornament will be honoring Jackson Memorial Hospital, which appears on hundreds of baby boomers’ birth certificate who were born in east Pasco in the early part of the twentieth century. The institution began with Dr. Thomas F. Jackson in 1919, and his small medical practice that was moved to Church Ave. at the residence of Reverend R.N. Abraham. Relocated even later to Howard Ave., it evolved into a 12-bed hospital. With several additions, the hospital served the community until 1985.

The 2016 ornament will remind many of their place of origin.

The dynamic group of 115 Dade City Garden Club members hosts an array of service, civic and advocacy projects aimed at making a real difference, and just plain beautifying the vintage environment of the city. Their recent Flower Show in April, celebrated the entire state with its innovative theme of the history of

Florida State Parks. In 2017, the group will host the Uncorked Event, a wine tasting showcase of the Gardens at the Dade City Garden Club grounds with exhibits and a lovely taste of Dade City ambiance, which occurs on alternating years. Other happenings include the annual Arbor Day celebration, complete with planting and dedication of memorial trees along the Roy & Martha Hardy Trail. The members will rally their creative juices, placing period 1800 holiday decorations of the Florida Pioneer Museum & Village in early December for the museum’s Christmas open house. The Club supports the Florida Garden Club Wekiva Youth Camp, and carefully plans an array of monthly meetings with informative educational speakers, demonstrations and workshops that address skill building as well as essential conservation issues.

As for the division of labor, six individual circles make up the configuration. They are named for noneother than beautiful flowers: azalea, dogwood, hibiscus, hollyhock, magnolia, and poinsettia. The circles carry out inspiring projects, fundraisers and service endeavors, like the Poinsettia Circle members’ volunteer efforts with a school garden at Lacoochee Elementary Schools. In remote northeast Pasco County, the members work with students to plan, plant, tend and eventually harvest their school garden. The students experience first-hand where their food comes from and feel the pride of seeing their plants grow. Besides serving their community with outreach projects, the Dade City Garden Club opens the doors of its picturesque facility and gardens at 13630 5th St., Dade City, for area weddings, receptions and events.

4. Waste less by storing produce properly and knowing how to buy wisely.

When it comes to making fruits and vegetables last, it’s all about the company they keep. For instance, never store potatoes and onions together, as onions give off a gas that quickly ages potatoes. Nobody wants to have to throw away potatoes! And they’re hardly the only thing to get trashed from our fridge every week - the Natural Resources Defense Council tells us that the US chucks nearly 40% of its food every year. What gets trashed most? You guessed it, fruits and vegetables. If you want to defy the odds and make the most of all you buy, here are a few of my favorite time-tested tips. Go European and shop for produce twice a week; buy only what you need for a few days as a lot of produce, especially fruits, won’t last a week. If all you need is garnish or a small side dish, consider shopping the salad bar rather than buying a full size item.

Top tips for eating well and wasting less - even on a budget

H

aving recently published my second book on the best of fresh produce, it’s safe to say by now I’ve researched nearly every fruit and vegetable one can fathom. While I may sound like the expert nowadays, growing up I was like most of the rest of my generation - a suburban-supermarket baby with not a clue how to pick out a ripe avocado. In all honesty - it’s slightly embarassing to admit - but I was always a little suspect of farms and produce stands, what with all their food that came out of dirt! As knowledge has progressed and the public is more informed about the merit of fresh produce, it’s been a thrill to spend my retirement researching and appreciating the ins and outs of fresh, tasty good-for-me food; but best of all, it’s such a joy to help chefs-in-waiting save money, waste less, and eat better. Here are a few of my favorite tips on how you can make the most of your produce.

Stay Fresh, Teri Pizza

1. The experts agree: keep it simple One of my favorite new books is Turning Point for Modern Medicine by Dr. Michael Badanek. In it he writes, “Many health-minded individuals go to great lengths to feel better. They buy air and water filters; shop at health food stores, take nutritional supplements, and exercise. Yet ‘well-being’ eludes them.”

Dr. Badanek is pointing out an inconvenient truth - we can buy all of the latest supplements and health technology; if we’re not eating right, we’ll never reach our greatest potential for wellbeing. So, what should we eat? Ocala’s own Nuris Lemire, occupational therapist and staff member of the holistically-focused Lemire Clinic tells us, “We should be eating what people ate 150 years ago: a simple diet of roots and fruits, greens and beans, seeds and weeds, plus fish or wild game.” Her words reminded me our ancestors couldn’t always get meat, and when they could, they didn’t eat a lot of it. Even Thomas Jefferson, famously said, he used meat “as a condiment” to flavor his meals. While the average age of modern man (78.8) massively exceeds any previously recorded human life expectancy figures, humans also face unprecendented rates of chronic disease.

Lemire continues, “modern food processing has stripped nutrients from food and changed the modern diet to: meats and sweets, pies fries, chips and dips, cakes and shakes. No wonder we’re in trouble!” Lemire explains humans are designed to be more alkaline which decreases inflammation in blood and tissue. She says, “the key to good health is an acid-alkaline diet of 80% alkaline or plant-based foods and 20% acid or animal foods.” Amidst all the scientific stuff, there’s one thing the experts can all agree on - fresh food from the earth is best, vary the colors of your fruits and

veggies for optimal nutrient intake, and stay to the outside aisles of the grocery store if you want to stick to simple real foods. I simply remind myself to eat fresh produce, eat more of it than meat, and I will feel better, all over, all year!

2. You can’t always make it to the farmer’s market - if not fresh, eat frozen.

Fresh is best, but frozen is your next best bet - and here’s why: a frozen bag of corn will list only one ingredient, “Corn.” Corn in and of itself has 58 mg salt and 5 g sugar. If you opt for a can of corn, you will see a few extras on the list - like added salt and sugar - additions we don’t need.

Whereas almost all frozen fruit and vegetables stick the basics - all we need...the real ingredient we know and love. So do yourself a favor, and practice the 3 F’s: Fresh and Frozen First. Last but not least, make sure frozen produce moves freely in the bag. If lumpy, they haven’t been properly manufactured, transported or stored.

5. Live on the edge. When it comes to leftovers, be bold! Add unused beet, radish or celery greens to a salad, save stray bits of produce for an omelet, tortilla, pasta salad, or antipasti. Those ancestors didn’t set out to make salsa or chutney; they were putting the little bits to use. TV Chef Ann Burrell usually has a big bowl next to her as she preps vegetables, she drops peelings in the bowl. Later those peelings are used to make a simple vegetable stock for soups, gravies and sauces. Another trick for daring greatly with produce is to freeze things you never imagined! Cabbage, celery, lemons, and grapes all freeze well. One of my favorite ways to use fruits and vegetable bits?

DIY beauty products! Make hair masks, skin masks, shower gels, you name it. So think outside the box and have even more fun being healthy!

3. Save money by knowing what to buy.

The common knock on fresh produce is always the cost. While it can be expensive, there are ways to save money and buy less. One of the best ways is to get to know what you’re buying. For instance, the larger circumference an asparagus has, the tastier; smaller beets are sweeter and yellow-bellied watermelons that pass the thump test tend to be more ripe.

oday would have been my pet rooster Lucky’s sixth birthday. He passed away in March from Wet Avian Pox and I continue to be devastated by his death.

I had come upon him the day after he was the sole survivor from his entire family after a wild animal attacked in the night. There he was, all alone on his first day on earth. I knew he wouldn’t stand a chance, so I scooped him up and took him home. It was pretty obvious I’d name him “Lucky”.

We bonded immediately and I became “Mommy.” Everytime I left his side, he would screech, leaving me homebound for the first four days. I really felt like a new Mom, waiting for him to fall asleep so I could eat or take a shower. He even took naps under my chin and spent each night on a wrapped heating pad in a container on my dresser. The months passed quickly and before I knew it, he crowed.

Once he grew up a little, I found him a nice large coop to live in, and I visited everyday. He especially liked me to be there when he went up to roost at night. If I tried to leave before he was asleep, he would start whimpering. I tried to be there every night for him, through heat and humidity, holidays, storms, illnesses, injuries and all. It felt great to feel so needed!

Lucky loved me so much he even memorized the sound of my PT Criser’s engine! As soon as I pulled up, he would start crowing and run the length of the coop to meet me at the door. I held him every day, sometimes for hours. If agitated, I calmed him down by holding

him and singing “The Lucky Teapot” song. “Lucky is a teapot, short and stout, here is his handle and here is his spout, when he gets all steamed up like he does, just tip Lucky over and pour Lucky out.” Many times he fell asleep in my arms. Over time, he trusted me completely and I trusted him.

Finally, things had come together and I was getting out of Fort Lauderdale to move to Ocala where I could have Lucky and his 2 hens with me on the property.

Three weeks before the move, Lucky got sick.

I miss him terribly. He took my mind off my own problems and opened up my heart. Now I feel as though I’ve lost a child. I mean, how many people get to raise their pets from birth? I still remember when he tried to crow for the very first time. I watched him fly for the first time. I watched him become a Dad. Fortunately, I have his daughter Lucy (Lucky without the “k”) with me now.

He was very special, and he made me feel special. A photo of us was voted to be in a Rescue calendar, we were on Public Radio; when we went to Pet Supermarket, people delighted in taking photos of him. One of the most special moments I had with Lucky was while holding him, he took his toes and wrapped them around my finger, like a baby would do.

It’s safe to assume, I’ll never have a rooster like Lucky again. During the last few months of his life, we come full circle - just like when he was a chick, we took naps on my bed, at night he slept on my dresser just like he did when he was a chick. Happy Birthday, Lucky
