We started dating when Alicia Was 16 and I was 18. After four years of courtship, we’ve been married for 56 years.

Here’s the astonishing part: During that time, Alicia never said anything to cause a spat. If there was a sitcom about her it would be “Everybody Loves Alicia.”

I am oh-so-lucky she kept me around. There are four children, nine grandchildren and three great grands who are lucky as well.

ust when you were so proud of yourself for sticking to your New Year’s Resolutions (which for most includes a new diet and stepping up the exercise) here comes February and all the trappings.

The first challenge will be those tempting Marti Gras king cakes filled with cinnamon, sugar, pecans and little plastic babies. Then comes that chocolate-covered holiday known as Valentine’s Day, and in March, The Florida Strawberry (Shortcake!) Festival.

Don’t fret.

We’re here to keep you focused on your goals while having plenty of fun, too.

In this edition, we’ve included an antioxidant-rich recipe for strawberries, we discuss which kind of chocolate is the healthiest, and, since February is Heart Health Month, we offer some tips for staving off heart disease.

And speaking of health. Isn’t it amazing that at age 83 Willie Nelson is still on the road and slated to appear at the Florida Strawberry Festival on Friday, March 3? Plenty of others known and loved by the Baby Boomer generation and beyond will also be “playing your song” at the fruit fest: The Oak Ridge Boys, The Blues Brothers, The Bellamy Brothers , Brenda Lee, the Drifters, the Platters, the Gatlin Brothers, Patti LaBelle, Rascal Flatts and more. y husband and I went on a Caribbean cruise to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. After tandem parasailing over the Atlantic and a delicious meal, we returned to our cabin and were surprised with a tray of chocolate-covered strawberries pre-arranged by our daughter.

Since then, strawberries have meant love and romance to me. And, why not?

Strawberries are members of the rose family and conveniently heart shaped.

To help you celebrate the romantic month of February, give these recipes a try.

Black Bottom Strawberries Ingredients: 20 large whole strawberries 1 11.5-oz. bag milk chocolate chips, divided 1 ½ Tbsp. shortening Toothpicks

Strawberries are low in calories and fat but rich in minerals and vitamins essential for optimum health.

Wash and dry strawberries. Prepare a double-boiler: place water in the bottom, making sure it doesn’t touch the top pan. Add shortening and half of the chips. Stir until smooth. Remove from heat and add remaining chips, stir un-

til melted. Insert toothpick through the middle of each berry and dip the bottom of each strawberry into the chocolate.

Hang berries over small glasses or jars until cooled. Place on wax paper and refrigerate.

For something extra special, why not also stuff your strawberries?

Strawberry Stuffing Ingredients: For 20 berries use: 1 8-oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened 3/4 c. powdered sugar 2 Tbsp. Cointreau ¼ tsp. vanilla (Liquor too much? Just use ½ cup less powdered sugar and delete Cointreau from the above recipe.)

Mix ingredients together.

Cut an “x” at the top of each berry but do not cut through berry. Gently fan out the edges of the “x”. Using a pastry bag, place a dollop of stuffing on top of each berry’s “x” and press down slightly. Chill on wax paper until ready to serve. (Add a pecan topping by quickly and gently dipping stuffed berries into 2/3 cup of chopped pecans.

hy it’s the 82nd annual Florida Strawberry Festival, taking place March 2-12 at the Festival Grounds, 303 N. Lemon St. in Plant City, where over three-quarters of the nation’s midwinter strawberries come from.

This year’s theme:“We’re Playing Your Song!”

“Yes, it highlights our entertainment,” said General Manager Paul Davis. “But most of all, it points to our focus of providing what our visitors like.”

Organizers have amassed a bumper crop of country, classic country, Christian, rock and oldies to play on the Wish Farms Soundstage. Headliners include Willie Nelson, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Blues Brothers, Drifters, Platters, the Gatlin Brothers, Patti LaBelle, Rascal Flatts, King & Country and more.

The 11-day community event celebrating the strawberry harvest attracts nearly 500,000 visitors who come for the stellar entertainment, youth livestock shows, exhibits of commerce and its world-famous strawberry shortcake.

Festival-goers will find the red, heart-shaped fruits also offered in milkshakes, jams, hamburgers, peanut brittle, cheesecakes, pizzas, cobblers, parfaits, crepes, lemonade, crème puffs and plenty of other concoctions.

Ever tried a Strawberry Sticky Pig? The folks at Polar Bear have combined homemade strawberry ice cream with torched marshmallows, waffle pieces, fudge and candied bacon.

Add a donut and it’s a pig on wheels.

Blues Brothers

The statesman of classic country music is still on the road making music with his friends – at 83 years old.

Throughout the years, the octogenarian has made headlines for his outlaw country hits, his Farm Aid concerts, his troubles with the IRS and the launch of his cannabis company, Willie’s Reserve.

Nelson is an author, actor, activist and martial arts expert. In 2014, at age 81, he received his 5th degree black belt.

Most of all, Nelson is known for his great musical talents.

Throughout his six-decade career and 200 plus albums, he has amassed nearly every conceivable musical award there is. In November 2015, the Library of Congress honored him with their Gershwin Prize for Popular Song for his contributions to popular music. He is the first country artist to receive the distinguished award. In December he was nominated for another Grammy.

If he wins, it’ll be his 12th.

In November, 1978, Jake and Elwood Blues (John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) made their national television debut on Saturday Night Live with their breakthrough, high-energy rendition of Sam and Dave’s classic Soul Man. It was an overnight sensation that catapulted these two to the heights of stardom.

Soul Man sparked a national summer tour, two platinum albums and the landmark feature film, The Blues Brothers.

In 1982, Belushi tragically passed away, but the tradition continues with his younger brother Jim Belushi carrying on as Brother Zee. It’s a high-energy, authentic, rhythm- and-blues show band with a South Memphis accent and an East Texas kick.

here’s nothing like a picturesque bed and breakfast to say “I love you.” Make Valentine’s Day, your honeymoon or anniversary unforgettable with these four idyllic places that ooze charm, character and history – some will even allow you to bring the other love of your life -- your pet.

Port d’ Hiver Bed & Breakfast,Melbourne Beach is a boutique hotel discreetly located on the half mile barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon. Pronounced (deh-vair), Port d’ Hiver is Old Florida luxury, comfortable yet elegant. Four airy, islandstyle buildings are intertwined with palm trees and brick paths in a lush tropical setting. Restored historic rooms feature private balconies. The largest and most private and luxurious room is the Mangrove Suite which can only be reached from the tropical garden bridge. Up the east coast in St. Augustine is The St. Francis Inn. Located in the oldest part of the nation’s oldest city along narrow brick paved streets, the St. Francis Inn dates back to 1791. The home was converted to a lodging establishment in 1845 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The St. Francis Inn sits on a quiet corner with a private walled yard and lush gardens.

Some rooms and suites offer balconies, fireplaces and four poster beds. Along with a gourmet breakfast buffet served daily, the establishment offers free parking, loaner bikes and the use of a beach cottage. Room prices range from $149 to $379 and pets are welcome on a limited basis.

Over on the west coast in the Tampa Bay area is the Beach Drive Inn. Built in 1910 and located on the edge of the Old Northeast neighborhood, the Beach Drive Inn faces St. Petersburg’s downtown waterfront. The Beach Drive Inn offers six beautifully appointed rooms with rates that start at $149 and run to $275. The Vinoy Room is one of the two that allow pets. Perhaps the most attractive feature of this bed and breakfast is its location on St. Petersburg’s lively waterfront that is within walking distance of a lively restaurant scene not to mention shopping, museums and movie theaters.

For a more out of the way option there’s the Cedar Key Bed & Breakfast, a Victorian-style home built in the 1880s. Ancient oak trees, lush gardens and a fish pond grace the grounds. You can enjoy views of the Gulf of Mexico, go bird watching, or take a short walk to downtown Cedar Key. Enjoy eating from the “bottomless cookie jar.” Pet friendly rooms and bike and golf cart rentals are also offered. Rooms like the “Summer Kitchen” to the “Tree House Suite” range from $110 to $200.

A Native Alternative to Valentine’s Flowery Tradition ypically when we think of flowers on Valentine’s Day, we picture a dozen red roses. White, pink and purple varieties may also be considered. But ponder the fact that a rose bouquet only lasts for so long

before withering and dying. On average, a florist will charge about $3.50 per stem for long-stem roses. That could add up to over $40 for a dozen roses although it’s not uncommon to find specials for as low as $20.

This year, why not consider an alternative plant gift that speaks to the more enduring qualities of love?

At about a third the cost of a dozen roses, a Florida native plant is a flower option that keeps on living and giving as they attract other forms of life once they’re planted outdoors. Here are some Florida native plants to consider with blooms that stay true to the colors of Valentine’s Day.

Tropical Sage (salvia coccinea) also known as blood sage or scarlet sage. Victorians began the tradition of using roses to symbolize love and romance.

It doesn’t take too much imagination to see that the red bloom of a tropical sage plant hints at that same passion. It’s an easy species to grow in sandy or welldrained soil. The bushy wild flower doesn’t get much taller than a foot high. Its tubular red blooms attract butterflies and perhaps humming birds if you’re lucky.

Its seedpods may also invite smaller songbirds to your yard. A one-gallon tropical sage pot which stands some eight inches to a foot tall costs about $6. You should be able to find Tropical Sage in bloom now.

Pink Coneflower (echinaceapurpurea) is a hearty perennial which features a daisy-like bloom. Pink Coneflower’spinkish- purple petals that drape over a cone-shaped center could be considered an attractive alternative to pink roses. This is a flower that’s usually featured in cut arrangements and is in bloom now. It tolerates heat and drought and in general asks for very little care. It can grow to two-to three feet high. The flowers are long lasting, but when they die, the petals fall but the seed-bearing cones remain, attracting birds.A one-gallon container that stands eight inches tall is also in the $6 price range.

Dotted Horsemint (monarda punctate), also known as spotted beebalm, is a bushy wildflower. You can find it blooming now in colors of white, light pink and purple. As the name indicates dotted horsemint is a mint relative and its leaves can be brewed into tea with a host of medicinal values. Horsemint can grow to about two-and-a-half to three-feet tall and, like tropical sage and pink coneflower, its one-gallon pot, which stands some 8 inches to a foot tall, is around $6.

It’s good at attracting pollinators (bees and butterflies) and easy to grow.

Other romance-capturing Valentines ideas to consider may extend to native Florida milk weeds such as Swamp Milkweed Incarnate. With its purple and pink blooms, this milkweed is better for wetter sites in your yard, near the base of a gutter run-off for example. Once removed from the pot, it’s a good host plant for monarch butterflies and other species. It can grow to almost two-feet in height and you can find them in bloom now.

And since we’re thinking outside the box this Valentine’s Day, you may also consider Scarlet Hibiscus. Its red, tropical-looking bloom makes it a uniquely Florida gift but you’ll have to wait for the wow factor because it blooms best in spring. This one might best be paired with an anticipation-building picture of it on a card. This plant is best suited to wetter sites like the milkweed mentioned above. The large blooms attract butterflies and hummingbirds and, when placed in the right growing conditions, this plant can climb to eight-feet tall or more. A one-gallon pot costs around $6.

He was free spirited, hard-drinking and fun loving and could outride, outshoot and outdrink any cowman in Florida. Men told stories of his exploits but it was the famous Frederic Remington, a 19th century artist, who immortalized Mizell in a painting called "A Cracker Cowboy" which was published in Harper's new Monthly Magazine in 1895.

Bone was on his horse with his dog at his side when sketched by Remington in Arcadia. True to form, Bone Mizell's death certificate in 1921 succinctly explained his demise: "Moonshine--went to sleep and did not wake up."

Remington concluded his visit in 1895 to Florida by summing up the Cracker cowhunter this way: "They are well paid for their desperate work and always eat fresh beef or razor-backs and deer which they kill in the woods. The heat, the poor grass, their brutality and the flies kill their ponies and as a rule, they lack dash and

om walked into the bedroom carefully carrying her steaming cup of coffee. It was his morning ritual now that he was retired. He was used to rising early so he always made the coffee and enjoyed a cup while reading the morning paper.

She enjoyed sleeping in after years of working and raising kids. To be able to just wake up without an alarm clock, stretch out in bed, sip that hot morning cup of Joe, and steal the time of day.Those were moments to be relished.

As soon as he walked in, he could tell. He set the cup down and walked over to her side of the bed. She was laying there with her eyes closed looking as peaceful as he had ever seen her. She seemed to glow.

• Dark chocolate is considered an antioxidant-rich superfood containing many healthy components that help combat free radicals and protect the body from disease.

• Researchers have found that eating dark chocolate every day can reduce the risk of heart disease by a third.

• Flavonoids (substances in chocolate) widen arteries by helping to lower blood pressure and improving blood flow to the heart and brain. Flavonoids can reduce the build-up of plaque and help prevent stroke. Their properties may also reduce the risk of diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity.

• Consumption of flavonoid-rich foods is associated with better cognitive function.

• Next time you’re stressed, light a chocolate-scented candle. The smell of chocolate increases theta brain waves, which trigger relaxation.

The Bad • Chocolate can cause headaches so those who suffer from migraines or chronic headaches should probably avoid it.

• Because chocolate contains high doses of caffeine and sugar, chocolate products have been blamed for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in children.

It is also toxic to dogs so keep it away from your four-legged pals.

• Most chocolate contains lots of calories, sugar and fats so don’t overdo. Being overweight or obese can have all sorts of negative health consequences, including diabetes. Too much sugar can lead to tooth decay. A small piece a day should do.
