Readers, let’s stand up for the Sunshine State summer. Let’s band together to prove our summers are plenty desirable - even downright exciting - for those brave enough to make the most of them. or many, retirement presents a golden opportunity to finally embrace free time - now the question is, what to do with it. Some have a dream novel to write, others want to see the world - and some want to explore the challenge of a brand new skill or hobby. If you’re looking for a little game, distraction or activity to make you more intelligent, here are five fantastic hobbies guaranteed by science to make you smarter.

1. Playing Chess. Competitive, inexpensive and endlessly challenging, the game of chess is a great hobby that’s been proven to make you smarter - by requiring you to exercise both sides of your brain at once. 3. Exercising. Scientists all over the world almost unanimously agree that exercising is good for your brain. It reduces stress, releases the feel-good neurotransmitters and improves blood circulation to the brain. It even makes parts of your brain bigger - researchers at the University of British Columbia discovered that even simple aerobic exercise increases the size of the hippocampus the brain area involved in verbal memory and learning. So, whether you want to run a 5K or try out Pilates, now’s the time to commit to exercising regularly.

4. Playing a musical instrument.

When you listen to music, multiple areas of your brain become engaged and active, but when you actually play an instrument, that activity becomes more like a full-body brain workout. Playing an instrument is definitely your go-to hobby for getting smarter, as it requires both hemispheres of the brain to work together and it requires rhythm, coordination and dexterity. 5. Meditation. Harvard neuroscientist Sara Laza conducted research to find the connections between the mind and body during meditation. s industrialization and population growth explode, National parks like the Grand Canyon have evolved into protective harbors for some of the last remaining dark skies in the country. Enjoy the increasingly rare beauty of a clear night sky in early June at the Grand Canyon as the entire park becomes an astronomical observatory.

That’s right, for eight nights (June 4-11 this year), the Grand Canyon hosts its Star Party, an annual event featuring volunteer astronomers who share their

expertise and set up telescopes for public viewing. The canyon’s sky is truly a wonder to witness in June, as it’s usually the clearest and driest month of the year.

To ensure the annual Star Party delivers the best backdrop for celestial bodies, organizers shift the date each year, avoiding the full moon for best visibility and the darkest night sky.

If you’re lucky you may see an assortment of planets, double stars, star clusters, nebulae and even distant galaxies. 2016 will be extra special as Saturn and Mars will both be close to opposition making them viewable for most of the night. Jupiter will also be visible early each evening this year and the moon will wax from new to first quarter over the course of the party. Early in the week hosts the darkest skies, but as the moon waxes it does become a popular sight itself. Highlights of the event include nightly slide shows and constellation tours at both the North and South Rim (see website for more details), the earliest of which begins at 8 p.m. Although many telescopes come down after 11 p.m., on nights with clear, calm

skies some astronomers continue sharing their telescopes later into the night.

Even in the summertime, nights at the canyon get chilly, so all Star Party attendees are encouraged to bring warm layers.

And of course, since it’s nighttime, it’ll be dark - so you’ll need a light source.

But be aware, to preserve the darkest sky views, all white light sources (most flashlights and smartphone screens) are prohibited. Interestingly, only red-light flashlights are advised - visit the Grand Canyon online to see why red is best, and for other tips on taking a trip to the party!

“The fact is, it’s conformity that kills personal style.”

was always told that women over 50 should never wear yellow. I say phooey! If you feel like you look good and more importantly, that you feel good, in an outfit that you found in the misses department, then wear it, no matter what the color and style. Conformity kills. I’ve always turned my back on the high fashion look, the tall skinny models and fancy clothes. Who looks like that? Who wears that? That is not real life. When it came to clothing for work, I always wore something comfortable, whether it was the “in thing” or not. I also wore a lot of colors - colors that were different than most of the people I worked with; I often wore red and purple together long before the Red Hat Society came into existence. Nowadays, I am just a little bit over 75, but I don’t look nor feel that age. And I think part of that is because I allow myself the freedom to dress young and stay young. You don’t need a ridiculously expensive outfit to be well dressed and you certainly don’t need a plunging, tight dress to look sexy. As you age, you learn, it’s true what they say; it’s all how you feel inside. Besides, on a more practical note, it turns out I’m glad I never took to wearing those pointed, high heel shoes - the ladies I know who did are now suffering from terrible foot problems. Over the years I still trust my gut when it comes to fashion but I have gotten more conservative in what I find appealing from a clothing perspective. I can’t make sense of skintight jeans or see-through blouses.

I guess I’m not too keen on things that leave nothing to the imagination. But who knows, I guess that makes me sound like an old lady...wink, wink.

The Man Behind the Movement

Even after devoting four decades to championing & evolving organic farming in Florida, sustainable agriculture visionary Marty Mesh remains as committed to the cause as ever.

“T

hey said it couldn’t be done,” Gainesville’s Marty Mesh recalled as the first answer he received from the Florida Department of Agriculture almost 40 years ago, when he first inquired about funding and advocating for organic farming in Florida.

In the 1970s, sustainable agriculture wasn’t exactly a buzzword yet, but the ‘no’s couldn’t deter Mesh’s dream of an organic evolution in Florida for long.

“I spent many, many years reaching out to the Florida Department of Agriculture about organic farming and I just wasn’t taken seriously,” Mesh explains.

“So I did what anybody committed to change does - as they claimed it was impossible, I just went ahead and did it.”

And by “did it,” he means he learned the dirt beneath his feet, what exactly was failing at the farms and how to unearth solutions to making ‘organic’ work. Mesh eventually discovered the secret was in the system.

“Everything in farming is systemic.

Organic farms in Florida seemed impossible because farmers who tried to grow organic were taking seeds and breeds that were designed to be used with pesticides and tried to grow them naturally.

It’s little wonder why that didn’t work,” he explains. “It took a lot of convincing to get farmers to reevaluate their whole system, rehabilitate nutrient-starved soil, grow in concert with the seasons and go back to older seeds and breeds. But a lot of times we did it.”

And according to Mesh, that’s really only the tactical approach. Ultimately, he says, a shift in farming is a shift in thinking - a total dismantling of the status quo.

“It’s really about cultivating community, so farmers receive support from the local people and policymakers they feed.

Ideally, everybody pitches in however they can to help ease the farm’s transition to organic, because it’s really a transition for everyone - to a cleaner environment and healthier food supply for all.”

With the support of one community behind him, Mesh first established Bellevue Gardens Organic Farm in Archer in 1976, a feat that only expanded his vision and mission. Now, at 62, with four decades of challenging conventional farming methods and progressing public pol-

“It’s no secret there’s a lot of bureaucracy involved in Florida agriculture,” Mesh admits. “You’re fighting uphill a lot of the time because, the truth is, the university system has a very cozy relationship with the Agro-chemical industry so farmers don’t see a lot of progressive research on crop sustainability or the long-term medical and environmental costs of pesticides. Instead we see a lot of privately-funded research amounting to little more than corporate seed patenting and product development.”

It’s that brazen candor and fiery zeal that has earned Mesh his reputation as an outspoken hero - who truly walks the walk. In addition to physically working with his hands in the soil, Mesh was instrumental in launching a Gainesvillebased nonprofit organization that’s now a national force to be reckoned with.

In 1987, Mesh helped form FOG - Florida Certified Organic Growers & Consumers - a nonprofit devoted to educating farmers and the public about organic food production. Mesh became the Executive Director in 1995, and under his leadership, FOG developed a USDA-accredited organic certification program, allowing FOG to grant national certifications in organic farming. Mesh soon found himself at the center of organic legislation, flying back and forth to Washington D.C., serving as a sustainable agriculture expert in the policymaking process. To bring things full circle for Mesh, he was recently awarded a grant from the Florida Department of Agriculture to help growers transition into organic practices from conventional ones.

Nationally named one of the “Top 25 People Who Have Most Influenced the Organic Industry,” Mesh is practically a household name at organic farms in Florida, some staff of which say they

couldn’t offer their community programs without the fruits of his labor.

“We are more than a farm,” says Yvette Rouse, associate director at Sweetwater Organic Community Farm in Tampa. “We’re a nonprofit educational center. One of our main goals is to contribute to the community in a meaningful way and the grant money we’ve received from FOG helps make that possible.”

Rouse is referencing Sweetwater’s participation in the “Fresh Access Bucks” program, initiated by FOG using a specialty grant they secured to aid in increasing sales of Florida-grown produce to Florida consumers - and not just the affluent ones. Thanks to FOG grant money, Sweetwater can offer SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) recipients $20 of select Floridagrown produce for $10 worth of SNAP dollars - a program colloquially known as “Double Your Dollars” - which greatly incentivises purchasing organic local food often deemed too expensive.

“FOG is instrumental in the food accessibility portion of our mission,” Rouse says. “Because they understand it’s about more than food; it’s about community.”

Mesh says FOG-funded programs like these reveal the philosophical tenets behind his lifelong devotion to this work.

“Changing the way we value and prioritize food production as a society is an economic choice, but it’s also a social choice, an environmental choice and an ethical one. What matters more, the brand of our clothing or the way our food was grown? What are the long-term medical consequences of pesticides we may not fully understand? How do we want to leave the planet for our grandchildren?”

In spite of all the progress he’s seen and made since first picking fruit in 1972, Mesh still works overtime for a more sustainable future. He runs FOG, he’s on the Board of Directors of many organizations and remains as focused as ever.

“A lot’s changed over the years,” he reflects. “But we’re a long way off from an environmentally responsible and socially just standard of agriculture. So I just keep chipping away at leaving the planet better than I found it.”

The Air in Florida: Good for Those with COPD? By: David Ebner

E

ach year, the American Lung Association releases the State of the Air Report, accounting for the air quality of major US counties. Surprisingly, not a single Florida city made the top 25 for most polluted in the country. Ocala, Sebring and the Fort Myers-Cape Coral ranked among the cleanest cities for ozone pollution; a comforting statistic for the 1 million Florida residents who have COPD. People with COPD suffer from symptom flare-ups brought on by anxiety, dust, mildew, chemical fumes, excessively warm or cold air, smoke or other types of airborne pollution.

Symptom flare-ups include coughing, wheezing, sputum, shortness of breath and fatigue. These facts raise the question of whether Florida air quality helps its residents fare better against progressive lung disease than those of other states.

Although significant changes to improve Florida air quality may be

years ahead, help is available. The Lung Institute of Tampa (lunginstitute. com), treats patients with lung diseases such as COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and pulmonary fibrosis.

Rather than using supplemental oxygen or a variety of medications to treat symptoms, they treat lung disease directly using stem cells from the patient’s body.

Stem cells act as the body’s healing system. The physicians extract the patient’s stem cells from their blood or bone marrow, separate the cells and return them intravenously to the patient.

The cells then travel through the heart to the lungs, where they are trapped in what the Lung Institute calls the pulmonary trap, where they can help promote healing of the lungs.

Here’s his inspiring story: My name is Joseph Gop and I am many things.

Vietnam veteran, author, prostate cancer survivor, husband of 38 years and Venice resident since 1978.

A common fear associated with aging is the feeling of “what’s left?” but I think this is a learned fear. We are made to feel we don’t matter once we hit a certain age or face a certain health problem. I share my story here in the hopes that it enlightens

many seniors who feel they have nothing left.

I can’t remember exactly what age I was when it happened, but I panicked. I sat each day thinking, what to do, how do I stay truly alive?

As it turns out, becoming an author is what enlivened me again. It reawakened parts of my character I hadn’t used in a long time. In my new life as an author, I used the tenacity I developed as a marine in my efforts

I patiently nurture my books the way I would another child, watching lovingly as they grow up and take on a life of their own. What I’m trying to say to my fellow seniors is, you’ve got a lot cultivated inside of you.

Observing the chaos of our current presidential race might make the innocence of America’s earliest election - Washington ran unopposed, heroically agreeing to do so only at the people’s insistence - a little hard to believe. Resembling nothing like the unanimous win of the world’s first popularly-elected president, races run by contemporary Chiefs-of-staff have been called everything from a war to a circus.

Spending billions of dollars and multiple years on political campaigns characterized by massive media exposure, intimate personal investigations and negative advertising attacks, presidential candidates’ bids are being increasingly condemned by critics as boundary-less battles birthing unchangeable domestic shame and irreversible international embarassment.

But is the absense of etiquette from American presidential campaigns really all that new? Rosemarie Ostler, author of “Slinging Mud...Two Centuries of American Politics,” says contrary to

Reader Dennis Moore writes: Last month you featured a story submitted by reader Jack Buettner. After reading Jack’s story, I wanted to share my own life-changing experience.

In October of 2014, I lost my wife of 47 years. I grieved her a great deal and then I accepted the path ahead was mine to face alone.

One day, my best friend called and encouraged me to attend our 50th class reunion in Oregon. I agreed to fly out and attend but didn’t think I would recognize many with a class of over 700 and this having been the first reunion I attended of the many that were held.

While there, I was invited to a cook out with about eight of us that went through grammar school together and it turned out to be a very special experience. I struck up a conversation with a classmate who I barely remembered and hadn’t seen since the 6th grade. Eventually I shared I was living in Florida and had lost my wife. Barb shared with me her own loss, that of her husband. He died five years ago and she was now spending half the year in Florida also.

Then comes the really uncanny part.

Five years after her husband’s death, they also spread his ashes there. As the reunion trip came to an end, we all promised to stay in contact with each other, which Barb and I did over the next few months. In November, Barb treated her family out of Bellingham, WA and Raleigh, NC to a Caribbean cruise leaving out of Canaveral. I drove from Jacksonville to Orlando to meet her family and give Barb transportation to Sarasota while her kids flew back home.

Then Barb introduced me to her life in Sarasota, a life full of beautiful beaches and great culture. I have now also shared much of my own life in North Florida.

Since November of 2015 to present our relationship has been a blessing to both of us, as we’ve not only learned how to enjoy life together but we’ve also discovered how to have a new view on life. Having someone to share life’s challenges and rewards means everything .

The greatest lesson we’ve learned in our relationship is that we really are so blessed in life, we just don’t always see what’s ahead for us...our blessings may be right around the corner!

THE RIGHT WAY TO TITLE

H

ow to title an investment account seems like a straightforward exercise. The reality, however, is that clients often do not title accounts in the most efficient way, and sometimes leave themselves or others open to additional liability in the process.

The most frequent situation I confront is an older (often widowed) client who titles an account with their children as joint owners. The obvious goal is a seamless transfer of assets to the children upon the parent’s death. Often overlooked is the fact that when registered in joint names, each child is an equal owner of the account to the parent. This can mean that in the extreme event that one of the children is named in a lawsuit or judgment, that these assets could potentially be “in play” for creditors.

A much more efficient strategy in this scenario is to title the account solely in the parent’s name, and then use a “Transfer-on-Death” feature. This allows the parent to retain full ownership rights of the assets (including the sole ability to make trades in and take distributions from the account), and then designate specific beneficiaries in the same manner as one can with retirement accounts or insurance policies. At the parent’s death, usually a certified copy of the death certificate is all that is needed for the assets to transfer into the beneficiaries’ names.

There can be some confusion with how to title joint accounts, so here are the three most common joint registrations:

• Joint Tenants with Right of Survivorship (Jt/WROS) - under this registration, each tenant owns an equal interest. Upon the death of one tenant, the remaining tenant or tenants take automatic title to the property.

• Tenants in Common (TIC) - in this registration, the ownership interest of tenants does not need to be equal, but must equal 100%. Upon the death of one tenant, the remaining tenant or tenants do not automatically assume ownership of the deceased’s share; rather, it becomes part of the deceased estate.

• Tenants by Entirety (Ten/by/ Enty) - this registration can only be between a husband and wife, and is only recognized in certain states, including Florida. Each tenant is considered to own a full interest in the underlying assets.

Upon the death of one tenant, all assets are transferred to the survivor.

You may wonder what the difference is for a married couple between titling a joint account as Rights of Survivorship or Tenants by Entirety. While many of the provisions are the same, one of the key differences is in the liability of the holders. If either spouse in a Rights of Survivorship account is the subject of a lawsuit, that spouse’s half of the account could potentially be at risk. With Tenants

by Entirety, the spouses must be sued as a joint entity for the assets to be at risk.

For this reason, it is almost always preferable for married couples in Florida to title their joint accounts as Tenants

by Entirety.

KENNEDY BUNKER: JFK’S LAST RESORT South Florida’s Peanut Island hid the President

Hidden on an island best known for boats and bikinis sits a fascinating relic of another era entirely. The Kennedy Bunker, an underground fallout shelter built quickly - and in secret - in December of 1961 was intended as a safe haven for President John F. Kennedy, whose family’s Palm Beach compound is minutes away across the water in Palm Beach.

Hidden underground in the woods of Peanut Island, this Presidential precautionary measure was created around the Cuban Missile Crisis, then fell into disrepair until it was restored by the Palm Beach Maritime Museum in 1999. The bunker’s the real deal - at its entrance is a fallout shelter sign, well familiar to Baby Boomers. Visit the museum to explore a rather spooky side of history, as tour guides explain how the stored survival suits worked, and that the president’s desk would have definitely been equipped with the red phone, a hotline to Moscow.

Getting to the museum is a trek, as its only accessible by boat, but if you’re a history buff, this is nothing short of a thrilling - and once top-secret - experience.

SENIOR STAMP STAR 84-year-old amateur photographer captures Florida’s beauty; earns spot in stamp history.

A

mateur photographer John Funderburk and his wife were exploring the Florida Panhandle when they spotted a stunning Great Blue Heron unafraid to pose for the camera. Little did the 84-year-old nature lover know his image of the bird would make him famous nationwide.

“We were at the Gulf Islands National Seashore in late November of 2009 when I took the series of photographs of this beautiful bird,” Funderburk recalls. “So it was quite a shock to be contacted six years later about using the image as a Forever stamp. It was incredible.”

To celebrate the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary this year, the United States Postal Service is releasing 16 Forever Stamp images featuring landscapes and wildlife from Parks all over the country.

Funderburk’s photograph of the long-legged water bird is the ninth in the stamp series, ensuring some of Florida’s beach beauty is included in a historic tribute to the beauty of the nation.

The Gulf Islands National Seashore includes areas of both Florida and Mississippi, a federally-protected region comprised of seven Gulf of Mexico barrier islands and some mainland of the two states. The nearest respective cities to the shore are Pensacola, FL and Pascogoula, MS, but three Florida counties and two in Mississippi are home to parts of the Park, allowing it to offer a plethora of various activities to its visitors.

“It’s such a beautiful area,” Funderburk shares.

“There’s so much wildlife and great opportunities for photographs - my wife and I love the Panhandle.”

Since retiring to Hernando, FL, the Funderburks have enjoyed exploring the vast natural wonders the state has to offer. They began documenting their adventures by uploading digital photographs to the photo-sharing website, Flickr, which is where John’s now famous photo of a heron was discovered.

“My wife and I have been into photography for many years, shooting all over Florida,” he explains.

“Believe it or not, we’ve got over 16,000 photos on our Flickr account now. It really is just a hobby and something that makes us happy - we’re not overly deliberate about it; we take whatever fits our eye.”

Their “just-for-fun attitude makes it all the more ironic their photograph was sought out by the USPS for the new Forever series, as the Postal Service receives more than 40,000 inquiries from hopeful photographers every year.

“I guess they just really knew what they wanted,” Funderburk humbly explains, “because they reached out to me. It was thrilling to have it happen unexpectedly and to have it keep it confidential for so long.”

Finally able to speak freely about an accomplishment he had to keep secret for a year, Funderburk says it’s a great honor to be chosen and to attend the Stamp Dedication Ceremony in New York City on June 2nd.

“I got my first camera when I was in the Army in 1953, but I didn’t take photography seriously until the 1980’s. To have something like this happen so many years later is a great feeling.”

The June 2 first-day-of-issue dedication ceremony will take place at the World Stamp Show in New York City.

Preparing for Loss

When confronting a parent’s death, allow for healthier grieving in the moment by addressing the administrative side of loss now

o u’re never quite emotionally prepared for the loss of a parent. I lost mine in very different ways; my mom suddenly to an accident and my dad to dementia after a long hospice stay. The losses were uniquely difficult, but in hindsight both taught me the importance of practical considerations when facing death. Although difficult to employ, the pre-planning tips below make space for your grief when the inevitable loss comes.

As difficult as it may be, sensitively approach your parents about constructing a list of whom to call at the time of passing and where to find all documents related to their estate. Be sure to update insurance beneficiaries, review their will and create a health care directive.

To avoid a costly probate, encourage your parents to put your name as the beneficiary on as many things as possible - bank accounts, deeds, investment portfolios, car and boat titles, etc. This simplifies the transfer of property and lowers the legal costs of closing the estate.

Don’t underestimate the generosity of others. Ask your parents for the name of a charity to include in their public obituary - you never know who will donate to charity in your parent’s name.

When death is imminent, don’t delay the hospice decision out of emotional denial. Not only is it covered by Medicare, hospice greatly eases end of life pain. Requesting hospice records regularly also keeps you abreast of your parent’s state of mind and any communication that occurred in your absence.

Budget for funeral costs now, as the cost of modern funerals stress most family budgets. If loss is near, investigate cremation or burial service rates and expect the unexpected - grave diggers charge a service fee and cemetery owners have been known to charge for regular mowing and other upkeep, even if you already own the plot. On the plus side, you may find assistance if you know where to look - if a parent served in the military, contact the VA about any eligibility to funeral assistance benefits.

Prearrange your own emotional support. With any major loss comes the acute phase of grieving, when stress and emotions are at their highest. Prepare for the psychological, spiritual, and mental/ emotional impact of the death creating a plan that gives you time and space to grieve and cry privately, but also provides the warmth and comfort of knowing you have loved ones to reach out to. Avoid sorting through your parent’s belongings alone as this can often be an overwhelming process. It can be very healing to spend time with someone who has endured this process themselves they’ll empathize while showing you that eventual acceptance is possible.

Help sea turtles thrive while enjoying Florida beaches this summer

lorida’s west coast beaches host the largest nesting population of endangered loggerhead sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico. Nesting season began May 1 and continues through October 31. While you enjoy Florida’s beautiful beaches this summer, it is important to be aware of turtle nesting areas and practice turtlefriendly behaviors. Turtle watching is a fun family activity with wondrous memorable experiences and teachable moments.

Pinellas County’s 26-mile coastline averages 120 sea turtle nests per season, each containing about 100 eggs. Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) was selected to monitor sea turtle nesting activity on Pinellas County beaches. CMA’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and release marine animals, including turtles and to support the survival of as many turtle hatchlings as possible. Trained staff and volunteers have released more than 60,000 sea turtle hatchlings into the Gulf of Mexico since 2005.

Similarly, in Sarasota County, turtle nesting season keeps Mote Marine Aquarium’s Turtle Patrol busy with Tur-

tle Walks. 2016 marks Mote’s 35th year of protecting sea turtles on 35 miles of coastline. Trained volunteers walk the beaches and watch the nests from Longboat Key through Venice. Some volunteers serve as guides for public Turtle Walks to educate people about turtle conservation. This year, Turtle Walk participants will meet at Longboat Key, 4795 Gulf of Mexico Dr., at 6:45 a.m., on Saturdays from June 18 through July 30. There’s no fee to participate.

Sea turtle nests are documented and flagged. In the evening, when the moon rises, you may spot turtles laying eggs or witness hatchlings making their way to the sea. Scientists believe that hatchlings instinctively follow the moonlight reflected off dark waters. Lights from nearby streets and properties disorient nesting females and hatchlings, leading them in the wrong direction to their demise.

Tips for “turtle-friendly” beach behaviors include blacking out house and street lights after sunset, minimizing noise (while listening to the waves splashing the shore), removing furniture from the beach every evening, and quietly observing nesting turtles and hatchlings from a distance

- without shining lights on them or using flash photography.

If you see injured and stranded sea turtles in Sarasota and Manatee counties, report them to Mote’s Stranding Investigations Program by calling (941) 988-0212.

Mango Madness: the world’s favorite fruit

angos...you see them in recipes everywhere mango marinades, mango muffins, even mango martinis. Commonly known as the most popular fruit in the world, there’s a reason this tropical treat is everyone’s favorite - it’s sweet and juicy, tastes delicious, and can be harvested twice annually, making it available and enjoyable all year round.

History suggests mangos originated in Southeast Asia and India, where references to the fruit are documented in Hindu writings that date as far back as 4,000 B.C. Mango seeds are thought to have traveled with humans to areas in the world with the tropical climates necessary for them to thrive - from Asia to the Middle East, East Africa and South America beginning around 300 or 400 A.D. While large-scale production is limited in the United States, mangos have been grown for about a century in tropical climates found in Florida, California, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

Because mangos are indigenous to so many cultures, they’re naturally a part of almost all of the cuisines in the countries where they grow. Mangos are popular in street food and on restaurant menus throughout Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brazil, India, the Caribbean Islands and everywhere mango trees thrive.

Second Life: Retirement births a writer L

ast month, we featured a story titled, “The Weaver of Wesley Chapel,” about local historian Madonna Wise and her latest book of several she wrote chronicling Tampa Bay area history. Exploring more of her path to authorship reveals Wise as a true artist of reinvention, having served the public school system for almost 40 years before passing the baton and delving into her deeper, creative side. As she embraced retirement, Wise soon found herself on a quest to write a personal masterpiece.

After working in public education under such titles as Director, Principal and Supervisor, Wise retired in December of 2012 having accomplished a career of service to her staff, her students and her community.

Amidst the administrative rule of any public system, she managed to showcase glimmers of her writing talent by authoring educational manuals, grants, journal articles and curriculum.

“Now?” she says, “Now my writing is an act of creative expression, imagination, emotion and passion. I write of sorrow, joy, ecstasy, charm, charisma - scripting the tales of fiction and nonfiction, feeling the emotions of my characters.”

When first faced with retirement, Wise admits she lavished in it like an extended vacation. Time was no longer metered out, hour by hour, or delineated in an appointment book or meeting. But it wasn’t long before that an internal sense of work ethic that had served her all her life manifested itself as an urgency to formulate Lifestyles After 50 • June 2016 • page 24

new, autonomous life goals. At age 60, she was suddenly filled with a sense of creative purpose, now answering to herself and any hopes of a legacy left in print.

At first, she pursued little writing gigs in her community. She happily accepted opportunities to pen grants for organizations, freelance as a volunteer newspaper columnist and write newsletters for her equestrian club - but still, she yearned to publish a book of her own. Now was the time; her children had launched their own lives and she was settling into a new rhythm - not in retirement, but rather reinvention.

With good health and time spent at her mountain retreat in North Carolina on her side, Wise often found inspiration for her writing while on the trails riding horses with her husband.

“Something about riding on a horse just opens my mind,” she reveals. “It helps me intertwine all my little observations, emotions and life experiences into books. Having worked with thousands of students and stakeholders over the years I often share things I’ve learned from all kinds of different people, which makes for quite the repertoire literary lessons.”

Although she admits a life of riding horses and penning novels is not without idyllic charm, she’s quick to note the accessibility of writing to all.

“Everyone’s a writer,” she says. “We all have access to the unique anecdotes of our lives - experiences and lessons that offer our fellow humans a bit of advice. Pass along that wisdom. It will enrich your life.”

Wise’s top tips for writing your masterpiece • Don’t stop. Write the entire story and keep going; don’t stop to edit or rethink. Fix it later.

• Let the characters talk. Allow them to take you on independent journeys.

• Write your memoirs. Anecdotal family stories and letters impart humor, humanity and insights in brain-stimulating communication.

• Self-publish. It’s now mainstream to get your book out there instead of waiting to be discovered.

• Look to local writer’s groups for support.

Timeless tips and advice for making romantic connections offline

new study published by the Pew Research Center reveals online dating is rapidly on the rise - and the 50 to 64-year-old crowd’s forays into finding love online has nearly doubled in just three years. With yet another highly personal aspect of our lives being outsourced to the internet, many stay faithful to their belief in fairy tales still envisioning a spontaneous connection with someone “in real life.” If you’re still a die-hard dreamy romantic, we’re all for it, but you won’t find the partner of your dreams at home on the couch or even in line for coffee with your face glued to a smartphone screen. We say, if you’re going to stay true to meeting your soulmate in the flesh, here are some tips to increase your chances.

1. Set intentions and practice non-attachment.

You can’t be open to a new relationship if your heart is holding on to an old one. Try a ritual like writing your former love a letter or singing a farewell song as a way to let go once and for all, to make room for the unexpected. Speaking of unexpected, approach meeting someone new with an attitude that remains unattached to any outcome.

Go into your adventure with the mind set of just trying to have fun and meeting new and interesting people in the real world.

Don’t forget to practice grace. Sometimes “trying too hard” is harder on you than not trying at all. Remember to be patient and gentle with yourself - what you give off is what you receive.

2. The art of approachability. Ask your most honest loved ones whether you give off signals that you are safe to approach. Are you constantly immersed in your phone or are you present to the world around you? Do you slouch and wear a frown or are you ready for something wonderful? If you see someone you like, whether you are a man or a woman, don’t be afraid to make eye contact and smile. Just displaying a feeling of warmth and friendliness makes it easier for others to approach you.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. While out and about, at the park or a volunteer event, don’t be afraid to ask questions. If a person who appears interesting is eating or drinking, ask about their wine or dish. If you’re at an event ask about his/her connection to the group or cause hosting the event. Keep questions open-ended and avoid yes or no questions that could stall a conversation before it ever gets started.

4. Pay attention to the subtleties. As the interaction progresses, remain aware of the nuances. If you find you’re only getting one-word answers, try to discern if that is a function of shyness or disinterest. If the talking flows with ease, compliments and curiosity, you’ve begun igniting a connection.

Let’s face it, summers in Florida can be brutal. The heat and humidity can feel unbearable, and everyday activities like gardening or exercising outside become events that must be approached with incredible timing. No more afternoons pruning or carefree runs on the beach - a heatwave and a thunderstorm may be just around the corner. In addition to “summer-proofing” your routine, your automobile also needs a little extra love in the warmer months, whether you plan to stay in Florida or beat the heat by driving North. Here are a few tips to keep your car in tip-top shape this summer.

Change your wipers and your radiator fluid.

Thunderstorms in Florida are bad enough to drive through even with good wipers. Don’t take a chance of being stuck in a torrential downpour with faulty wipers - change them now. As for the radiator fluid, the cool-

ing system in your car depends heavily on this liquid to take all the heat out of your engine, and the fluid has a limited working lifespan. While you’re changing the fluid, take a hose and spray off the front of the radiator.

We all know how love bugs love our windshields, but these pesky insects also gum up the airflow through the radiator, so give it a good wash once a month.

Get an A/C check. It may seem like a no-brainer to check such a vital function of your car in the summer, but few people inquire about their A/C until something goes wrong. Most modern cars have a cabin filter that keeps pollen and dust from entering the A/C system, but it often gets very dirty. The dirtier it gets, the worse your precious cooling system will work, so

have this cabin filter changed once a year. Now’s a good time to have the A/C belt changed as well since a slipping belt will cause poor A/C performance.

Make sure your battery is in perfect shape.

Florida’s heat can be very tough on batteries, causing the chemical reactions inside them to accelerate resulting in a shorter lifespan for your battery, If yours hasn’t been changed in the last five years, get a new one, especially since your A/C derives its power here.

Check your tires’ air pressure & the condition of your spare. Simply keeping your tires filled can save you a big headache and a possible blowout. And be sure to peek at your spare so you know it’s got your back.
