LIFE-CHANGING ADVENTURE

BY REBECCA FENDING Before setting out on this life-changing adventure into the American Southwest National Parks, I read a biography of legendary Native American Photographer Edward Curtis. This set the stage for my experience with 35 other travelers to a portion of our land I’d never seen, except in photographs.

Our first stop was Mesa Verde National Park, which protects some 5,000 Puebloan sites, including 600 cliff dwellings, dating back to A.D. 550. Impressive Cliff Palace was essentially a city of more than 150 rooms and 20 circular underground kivas used for spiritual ceremonies. All sites were built with bones and rocks as tools and waterproofed with pitch from pinion pine trees.

We continued our breathtaking trip by boarding the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Durango, Colorado. The rail, which has been in continuous use since 1882, provides an ideal vantage point to take in the Colorado high country wilderness of the San Juan Mountains. While navigating through winding mountain passes and river rapids, we relished tall aspen forests turning yellow in late September.

Our guide aptly quoted the ancient Indian phrase “Ya at eehi,” meaning, “Everything on the surface of Mother Earth and in my life is good.”

Indeed, the Navajo Bears Ears National Monument was 100% restored and slightly expanded from its original 1.3-million-acre boundaries in early October by President Biden.

Another absolute high point was arriving at Arches National Park. It felt like a playground where one could see over 2,000 red sandstone arches like Delicate Arch, a free-standing 65-foot loop of rock, and Balanced Rock, a 128-foot stone pillar that supports a boulder balanced upon it. Some of these formations conjure up images of people, layer cakes and even cruise ships!

We stopped at Navajo Bridge to appreciate a soaring influx of endangered California condors that have been returned to nature there and in other western locations through a successful breed and release program.

Continuing on to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, we arrived opportunely with fewer travelers and more colorful trees. It is the wilder side of the famous expansive canyon and a day’s drive from the more frequented South Rim. Passing bighorn sheep nestled in a heavenly habitat, we entered Zion National Park in Southwest Utah. Daunting cliffs of red Navajo sandstone amongst pink, white and vermillion cliffs and blue skies, define this popular hiking and climbing park.

Grand finale: otherworldly Bryce Canyon National Park is most memorable for its six square miles of pillar hoodoos and seemingly endless amphitheaters. Its trails drop 2,000 feet from the 9,000foot Paunsaugunt Plateau. A dramatic backdrop for the changing light and hues which create a glow from within; a photographer’s delight.

“Peace Train”

He came to prominence here in the early Seventies as a singer-songwriter responsible for such ethereal ballads as “Peace Train,” “Wild World,” “Moon Shadow” and “Morning Has Broken.” He was equally popular in his home country of England at the same time, but to his British fans he was probably more like Cat Stevens 2.0, a rocker revamped from the turbulent late Sixties.

“Peace Train” was Stevens’s third entrée into the 1971 American Top Ten, the song being gleaned from his million-selling album “Teaser and the Firecat.”

Arriving at a time of social upheaval (especially concerning the unpopular Vietnam conflict), “Peace Train” brought a message of hope and encouragement to his followers. Infused with a Greek-influenced calypso beat and powered by handclaps, violins and a gospel-tinged chorus, Cat’s hit offered an escape from the country’s malaise and a welcome to a world of tranquility and contentment via a metaphorical train ride. Who wouldn’t want to be on such a conveyance?

Steven set his heart on becoming a songwriter in the same vein as Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. He signed a publishing deal at 17 with a London music company and cut several original demos, including the future Tremeloes hit “Here Comes My Baby” and “The First Cut is the Deepest,” recorded later by Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow. He changed his stage name to Cat Stevens, in part because a girlfriend claimed he had eyes like a cat. Also, he has said, he couldn’t imagine

anyone going into a record store to ask for a Steven Demetre Georgiou album.

Never a standout student, Stevens later dropped out of art college to become a velvet-suit-wearing teen idol who placed three rock singles high on the British record charts. What followed for him was a schedule of personal appearances, recording sessions and an indulgence in the seductive (and often destructive) world of the rock star.

He contracted tuberculosis and landed in a London hospital for a year-long recuperation. While taking stock of his life during that time, Stevens meditated, did yoga, became a vegetarian and considered different spiritual paths.

During his recovery, he composed numerous songs in an easy-going, folk-pop style, his new works more intimate than the hard-edged rockers that had first brought him fame in the UK. “In the old days, I was more concerned with melody,” Cat said later. “Now it’s what I have to say.”

National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month: Prevention and Help

BY REBECCA FENDING This month starts National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and with it an opportunity to learn more about this disease, how to prevent it and how to help those affected by the condition.

Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia, often impeding the affected person’s daily life and tasks. This disease accounts for 60 to 80% of dementia diagnoses. Although there is no cure, there are ways to promote brain health and healthy aging for you and your loved ones: National Memory Screening Program – Memory screenings are free, simple, quick, noninvasive healthy brain checkups that consist of a series of questions to gauge memory, language, thinking skills and other intellectual functions. Screenings are conducted one-on-one through secure videoconference (i.e., Zoom, Facetime, Skype), and the program is open to everyone; there are no minimum age or insurance requirements.

Improving physical health – Much of what helps promote healthy brain aging has to do with your physical well-being. Eating well, exercising regularly and staying active both physically and mentally helps increase blood flow to the brain. Increasing blood flow directly correlates with a healthy functioning brain. With this, limit your alcohol intake and stop smoking to keep yourself hydrated and keep oxygen flow high.

Learn new things – One way to keep your brain stimulated and active as you age is by challenging yourself to learn new things daily. Whether it be a language, a documentary, a new hobby or sport, or even brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand, any activity that exercises the brain is wonderful at staving off Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Get enough sleep regularly – Quality sleep also helps the brain to age with grace. Sleep is what allows the body to repair itself, as well as work to store new memories from the day. Rest for the brain is just as important as stimulation.

Socially stimulate yourself – Push yourself into social situations to help keep your cognitive stimulation high.

For family members looking for help and guidance in handling a member close to them with Alzheimer’s, here are a few resources to best help you: AFA Helpline – Available by phone (866-232-8484), text message (646-586-5283) and webchat (www.alzfdn.org), the AFA Helpline (staffed entirely by licensed social workers specifically trained in dementia care) provides guidance, support, answers and information about local services seven days a week.

Virtual activity programming – To help individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers stay active and engaged from anywhere, AFA offers free daily activity and therapeutic programs through its website. Activities at “the AFA Teal Room” include music, art, movement, chair yoga, fitness, meditation, virtual tours and more. View programs at www.alzfdn.org/ afatealroom.

Telephone-based support groups – AFA offers free weekly, telephone-based support groups facilitated by AFA’s licensed social workers, designed to give caregivers a place to connect and share from anywhere in the country. The first market of the season was held on October 3, and each one after will feature 35 to 40 vendors set up around the brewery and in the spacious beer garden. Dunedin Celtic Music and Craft Beer Festival After a challenging year for planning festivals, the Dunedin Celtic Festival is back on this month.

President Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month in 1983. As we recognize the 38th anniversary, let us also acknowledge the role of exercise in preventing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Dementia refers to a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 5.8 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease, the majority of them are 65 and older. According to the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation, regular physical exercise can reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by up to 50 percent. A Swedish study found that women who were in better cardiovascular health had an 88% lower risk of getting dementia than other women, according to the report published in the Medical Journal of Neurology. Research conducted by the University of Madrid shows that exercise can also slow the disease’s progression in those already diagnosed.

Most Alzheimer’s organizations and the World Health Organization (WHO) agree that adults should strive for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week. Most studies focus on the benefit of aerobic exercise, but many suggest that strength training could be equally beneficial in preventing

dementia. Maintaining muscle mass, as discussed in last month’s issue, is also crucial for those with Alzheimer's disease. It helps individuals maintain the strength to perform daily activities of living, thus prolonging their independence.

In order to meet the goal of 150 minutes of exercise a week, it is important to choose activities that are enjoyable and sustainable, meaning something you can stick with over a long period of time.

Any activity is good, whether it be walking, water exercise, yoga, tai chi or gardening. It is also important to choose an exercise activity that is suitable for your fitness level and overall health.

Water exercise is always a good choice because it is easy on the joints, and the water’s resistance helps build muscular strength and endurance.

November has descended upon us, and like most months, this one is fraught with special holidays and celebrations, aside from NANOWRIMO, and the end of Hurricane Season.

One such special day is on November 5, Guy Fawkes Day (as if you didn’t know). Guy Fawkes is famous/infamous for being part of a group of provincial English Catholics who failed in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, a conspiracy to assassinate King James VI and members of the Houses of Parliament.

He joined in this plot in retaliation for King James’ increased persecution of Roman Catholics. Fawkes had enlisted in the Spanish Army in the Netherlands and won a reputation for great courage and cool determination.

The instigator of the plot and his small band agreed that they needed the help of a military man who would not be as readily recognizable as they were. They dispatched a man to the Netherlands to recruit Fawkes, who, without knowledge of the precise details of the plot, returned to England and joined them.

The plotters rented a cellar that extended under the palace, and Fawkes planted 36 camouflaged barrels of gunpowder there. But the plot was discovered, and Fawkes was arrested. After being tortured on the rack, he revealed the names of his accomplices. He was tried, found guilty and was to be executed opposite the Parliament building, but he fell or jumped from the gallows ladders and died from a broken neck. Following his death, he was quartered.

Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated annually, with fireworks and bonfires where small effigies of Guy are burned.

Guy Fawkes is even more famous because of the Guy Fawkes masks, as popularized by Hugo Weaving in the movie “V” for Vendetta. The mask has come to represent “Anonymous,” “The Occupy Movement” and other antiestablishment protests around the world.

I believe that if there were no Guy Fawkes masks, there would be no more protests and no more wars; everyone would live together in peace, love and harmony worldwide and sing “Kumbaya.”

On November 22, I will be gathering a group of rebels at downtown Lakeland’s Munn Park, where we will put on Guy Fawkes masks prior to protesting the international overuse of Guy Fawkes masks.

Mental health might not be at the top of your list of issues to discuss with your primary-care provider during your next appointment, but that could be a big mistake. Successful treatment for emotional conditions and mental health issues often begins in the primary-care provider’s office and leads to the most successful outcomes.

“It’s part of our training in medical school,” explains Millennium Physician Group Family Medicine Physician Nasser Kazmouz, M.D. “We explore all aspects of mental health. I can prescribe medications for many common mental health issues and can also coordinate additional care; most importantly integrating in-depth counseling into the clinic visit if necessary, offering solutions and many options for available community resources along with a problem-focused therapist if needed.”

With years of experience as a primary-care provider and in emergency departments, Dr. Kazmouz says he’s done more than just read about treating mental health issues in patients, he’s seen it firsthand. How it starts and how it ends. He adds it’s is very important to get involved emotionally with patients to better understand their overall health, build trust, and improve outcomes.

“Being genuine,” he admits is how he connects with patients. “I’m open and truthful with them so they’ll be honest with me and build the bridges in that clinical encounter and future ones, adhere to treatment, and succeed in achieving their goals.”

The mental-physical health connection is perhaps the most important one.

Research has shown chronic conditions, including diabetes and heart disease, can make depression or anxiety worse and vice versa. Addressing mental health concerns starts with having a trusting relationship with your healthcare provider.

“Everyone needs support. It’s no secret. We should not be ashamed of it and we all need it in various degrees,” admits Dr. Kazmouz. “It’s okay to ask for emotional support. We have to bring out the human inside our patients and focus on the person sitting in front of us truthfully and genuinely. Your primary-care provider’s office is one of the safest places to do that.”

Dr. Kazmouz says taking the extra time to really get to know his patients makes all the difference, “I focus on working with them not only as a doctor, but as a friend.”

Thanks to Vintage Paws Sanctuary, “Speedy” Finds His Silver Lining

“I cannot imagine life without Speedy,” says Victor Baut, who has provided a foster home for Speedy since 2013. Displaced and sent to an animal shelter in Desoto County, this senior dog became a lucky dog when he was rescued by Vintage Paws Sanctuary and connected to his “happily ever after” home.

“We are a safe haven that rescues, rehabilitates and cares for displaced senior dogs, and we do whatever it takes to restore their comfort and dignity,” says Jennifer Hummel, Vintage Paws Sanctuary President and CEO. “That includes veterinary care and any needed surgeries, finding the dogs loving homes through foster or adoption or caring for them for the rest of their lives here at Vintage Paws Sanctuary.”

Speedy’s care began with patient, specific training to keep him safe. “He loves to run. With about two weeks of working with Speedy, he was much better about that,” recalls Baut. “Then, he showed us his other superpower. Little Tyke’s Thanksgiving – A Short Story

by Ann-Marie Stenhouse Little Tyke, Billy, lay in bed; he didn’t want to move this morning. The smell of roasted turkey permeated his brain. Once a year, he looked forward to those wonderful odors coming from the downstairs kitchen where a large turkey had been slowly cooking all night long. In a few hours, his grandparents would be here.

They would bring brightly colored presents to put under the tree that Daddy had cut down yesterday. Little Tyke thought, I’ve got to be a really lucky boy to have such a great family. His second thought was, Maybe I’ll get to have the wishbone. His third daydream was, And maybe this year, I’ll get the big turkey leg!
