A Happy and Fit New You!

ach New Ye a r , w e promise ourselves to eat more wisely, keep up with doctor visits and exercise regularly, all keys to healthy aging -- and happiness too.

Science has shown that regular exercise boosts your mood (by increasing endorphins and decreasing stress). And, just knowing you are doing something to increase your longevity should make you elated.

But sometimes we become bored with the same old exercise routine or reach a plateau and stop seeing results. Often we become involved with too many other distractions and put our fitness goals on the back burner.

Maybe its time to consider changing up the routine and challenging your body and mind in new ways. Time to find some go-to activities that inspire you and keep you motivated. Finding an exercise partner will also increase your chances of long-term success.

T h e following activities are just a sampling of what is out there for seniors and most can

be adapted to every fitness level. If there is any question about safety or suitability, check with your doctor first.

So get some friends together, mix things up a bit and experience the rewards that exercise has to offer in 2018.

Silver Sneakers What began 25 years ago as classes for 65 and older adults, has now grown and evolved to accommodate all fitness levels and interests. In addition to the traditional classes, options include programs for Baby Boomers and active adults, as well as FLEX, a community fitness network with more than 70 types of unique classes taught in parks, rec centers, etc. Silver Sneakers is free with qualifying Medicare health plans and provides access to thousands of locations across the country. Dance the night away Join the swing dance craze. Or salsa, waltz or disco your way to fitness. Any way you spin it, dancing is known to improve gait, balance, cardiovascular fitness, coordination and mood. Study after study shows dancing is effective in staving off dementia too. According to a 21-year study led by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, aging adults who danced regularly reduced their risk of dementia by 76 percent.

Get your Zen on Low-impact, meditative exercises like tai chi or yoga allow the body to slowly transition from one position to the next.

Yoga is a wonderful way to stretch, reduce stress and maintain flexibility and balance.

Those with physical limitations can adapt

their poses with the use of chairs. The University of Maryland Medical Center credits tai chi with helping to improve the balance of people as old as 92.

Water Workouts Swimming increases cardiovascular fitness, builds strength, improves flexibility and endurance. It’s also very low-impact. Those who don’t care to swim laps can take partake in water aerobics, which research shows can improve muscle tone, body composition and reduce joint and lower back pain.

The great outdoors by heel or wheel Enjoy the beautiful weather this time of year by biking, hiking or fitness walking.

All are low-impact, enjoyable, cardiovascular activities that help improve balance and posture, while reducing stress.

Kayaking and standup paddle boarding Get up close and personal with nature while toning abs, arms, back, chest and shoulders. Kayaking and standup paddle boarding offer great cardio benefits too and you’ll likely spot manatees, dolphins and other interesting water creatures.

Pickleball Pickleball is said to have originated when a group wanted to play badminton but couldn’t find a shuttlecock, so they lowered the net and used a whiffle-like ball and plywood paddles. Today this mashup of tennis, badminton and ping pong is played on a court smaller than a tennis court so there isn’t so much running around and thus, less wear and tear on joints. It is gaining huge popularity, especially with seniors.

The 33nd Annual Florida RV SuperShow Rolls Into Town

hose dreaming about a fun, carefree, nomadic life on the open road should mark their calendars for the 33nd annual Florida RV SuperShow, Jan. 17--21 at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa.

“We will have more suppliers’ booths and every type, size and style of RV on the market,” said Florida RV Trade Association Marketing Director David Kelly. “With the addition of new entertainment and more educational seminars, we’re anticipating record crowds this year. We’re also renewing the two-day pass so the public will have two full days to see everything at the SuperShow at no additional cost.”

The theme of the 2018 Florida RV SuperShow is “Wherever You Roam, You’re Always at Home,” pointing to the fact that with today’s RVs, anyone can enjoy all the creature comforts while on the road.

The SuperShow is the place to see hundreds of RVs, trade-in old RVs or to get acquainted with

the RV lifestyle. Florida’s finest campgrounds and resorts will have booth exhibits; a huge display of camping accessories and supplies will be found in the Camping World Store.

Enjoy free entertainment. From clowns and unicycle riders to barbershop quartets and bag pipe bands, the SuperShow has it covered. Shuttle service is also free and will carry visitors from exhibit to exhibit.

Seminars are presented throughout each day and include topics that cover how to deal with financial, personal and medical concerns while on the road for extended periods of time; how to select the right RV for your lifestyle; RV maintenance; and guided RV tours.

The RV market is cookin’ right now. According to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association’s RVs Move America study, the industry generates an annual impact of $50 billion per year.

A New Home, A New Life, A New Me

A

s the years went by, “retirement” was a word that seldom passed my lips or crossed my mind. Now I find myself retired and “living the dream” in an “adult community.”

It’s a whole new world to me, being surrounded by all these so-called “old” people. I’m not really sensitive about my age, however, I once torched a McDonald’s after the girl at the drivethrough window addressed me as “Pops.”

Kidding.

It takes some time getting used to life in our village. Everyone’s just too darn friendly -- and I like it.

Saturday mornings mean that coffee, tea, donuts and other pastries are available at the clubhouse. All of the women sit together at one large table while all of the men sit at another. I don’t know why, but I’m too new to suggest changes in what may be somewhat of a “good old boy” tradition.

Those at the men’s table talk about their aches and pains. Past or future surgeries. Who’s a Vietnam veteran.

Who has tattoos.

I don’t know what the women talk about but they laugh a lot.

Sometimes they stop, throw glances our way, and then resume their laughter with greater gusto.

Here, one can walk the streets at all hours, day or night, without fear of being

raped, pillaged or plundered. I’m not implying that there are no ruffians in the village. There are rogue riders as well as marauding golf cart gangs on the premises, easily recognized by their Rockport riding boots and large “Hell’s Duffers” patches. I doubt that any of them have ever even held a golf club. Periodically they take over the clubhouse and throw wild parties, drinking case-after-case of Ensure.

After a few hours, they depart, leaving a messy trail of AARP literature behind.

In addition to a slew of activities, we have a billiards room, a shuffleboard court, a swimming pool, a well-stocked library and an exercise room complete with everything one needs to get the body of Chuck Norris or Christie Brinkley.

Even with all of these diversions, what I am looking forward to the most is coffee morning this coming Saturday. I have a gut-feeling they’re going to teach me the “secret handshake” and present me with my very own decoder ring.

Give Your Financial Health a Checkup

The New Year is always a good time to take stock of your health.

But it’s not just your physical health that needs a checkup—make sure to give your financial health one as well.

By DAVID NOVAK Review your distribution rate Most retirees need to take money out of their investment portfolio on a regular basis in order to meet all their living expenses. What is a sustainable rate to do this?

The traditional approach many retired clients have taken is to spend the income generated by the portfolio, while not touching the principal. However, the cumulative effects of almost a decade of low interest rates have thrown a wrench into this strategy.

A better way to think about this is to consider what the overall distribution rate is on the entire portfolio, including both income-oriented and growth-oriented assets. Do not be afraid to sell some growth-oriented investments, especially if they have had a recent period of strong performance.

Also, be aware of the effect that lump sum distributions can have on the sustainability on the regular monthly withdrawal rate over the long term. For example, I have a client who takes $1,000 a month out of her portfolio, which we have determined to be a sustainable rate over the long term. When she wanted to take $3,000 out for expenses for an upcoming vacation, I made sure to point out that while we could accommodate this, we also needed to adjust the monthly amount lower to compensate.

Review your asset allocation It is no secret that the stock market has had a couple of strong years recently. Is it time to take some money off the table, and rebalance into other areas of your portfolio?

While it can be tempting to “let your winners run,” never forget what your long-term asset allocation target is, and more importantly what caused you to establish that target. It’s easy to be prisoner of the moment and assume the good times will last forever.

You also want to make sure to rebalance not only among the main asset classes of stocks, bonds and cash, but also within them as well. You don’t need me to tell you that not all stocks are created equal, nor are all bonds created equal. For example, if you own high yield bonds as part of your overall fixed income exposure, because that sector has performed so well, it would be prudent to consider trimming some of those gains.

Review the implications of the new tax plan As I write this, Congress is putting the finishing touches on the new tax plan. It will be important to understand exactly how this will affect you.

Should you consider changing the federal and/or state withholding percentages based on the new rules?

Many clients have maintained the same withholding rates for years, and may need to modify these based on new federal brackets and/or potential changes in state tax rates and deductibility.

Do you need to make any changes in your charitable gifting? Make sure under the new plan that you are still getting the most bang for your buck with your charitable donations. Also be aware that one thing expected to remain the same is the ability to make charitable contributions directly from your IRA, in order to satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).

Make sure you are up to speed on the ability to designate specific tax lots when selling an investment in a taxable account. At the time of this writing, it is under strong consideration to make first in-first out, or FIFO, the mandatory election for selling any investment. This could have a meaningful effect on low-basis stocks that have been held for many years.

Review your estate plan Are your accounts’ primary beneficiaries still exactly how you want them? Have those beneficiaries had children themselves, resulting in a need to update your contingent beneficiaries?

Are you still comfortable with the person(s) you have designated to be your durable power-of-attorney, and/or health care surrogate? Even if you are, when is the last time you have had a discussion with them to make clear your current wishes? Are you certain those current wishes are reflected in your legal documents?

Are the documents in a place where they are accessible for those who would need to act on them?

If you have multiple adult children, I have always found transparency to be extremely important. Make sure all your kids know which one is the executor of your estate, and what your general plans are in terms of passing on your assets to your heirs. This can prevent a lot of headaches down the road.

By no means is this a comprehensive financial health checklist, but hopefully serves as a good starting point as we get ready for 2018.

ach January, I try to schedule a trip to Memphis, Tenn. for three reasons. First, I celebrate Elvis Presley’s January 8 birthday by atBy Kathy Megyeri tending the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s festivities at Graceland. Secondly, I pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a visit to the National Civil Rights Museum. Third? To enjoy Memphis barbecue ribs -- some of the best in America.

Even if you can’t make the trip to Memphis, you can still remember the “Kings” by reading a copy of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, playing a few Elvis tunes and preparing this superb ribs recipe from the Food Network. It serves six, and takes 3 hours and 35 minutes.

Directions: • Combine the brown sugar, chili powder, 1 Tbsp. salt, 1 tsp. black pepper, the oregano, cayenne, garlic powder and onion powder in a small bowl and rub the mixture on both sides of the ribs.

• Cover and refrigerate 1 hour or overnight.

• Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. • In a roasting pan, combine the broth and vinegar. Add the ribs to the pan. Cover with foil and tightly seal.

• Bake 2 hours. Remove the ribs from the pan and place them on a platter. Pour the liquid from the pan into a saucepan and bring to a boil.

• Lower the heat to a simmer and cook until reduced by half. Add the barbecue sauce.

• Preheat an outdoor grill to medium high.

• Put the ribs on the grill and cook about 5 minutes on each side, until browned and slightly charred.

• Cut the ribs between the bones and toss them in a large bowl with the sauce. They can also be served “dry” with additional seasonings.

Ingredients: 1/4 c. brown sugar 2 Tbsp. chili powder Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tsp. dried oregano 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/2 tsp. garlic powder 1/2 tsp. onion powder 2 racks baby back ribs 1 c. low-sodium chicken broth 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar 1 c. barbecue sauce

Why you need a “second act”

ynn Taylor from Sanibel Island spent most of her life as a successful Florida real estate developer. Now she serves on the board of directors for a flourishing book club in Ft. Myers, selecting books, contacting agents, flying in authors, and hosting magnificent dinners for 150 members.

Alice Mack of Ft. Myers took a job at a local library after a career as a military nurse.

She says her background comes in handy as she deals with the general public, especially homeless persons who may be in need of medical attention.

And Alicia Bauer, a fashion maven from Colorado who moved to Venice years ago, became a wellknown and skillful milliner at her retirement community where she hosts hat parties, often re-enacting well-known Florida matrons such as Mable Burton Ringling and Mina Miller Edison.

By engaging in their “second acts” or “encore careers,” these women are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment, disabilities, heart attacks or strokes, and are more likely to live longer, according to a multitude of studies.

partment at California’s Crean College of Health and Behavior Sciences at Chapman University, reports in the Kaiser Health News (Aug., 2017) that people who perceived themselves as being useful had a stronger feeling of well-being and were less likely to become disabled or to die during a seven-year follow-up period than those who didn’t see themselves this way.

A recent report in JAMA Psychiatry, a publication by the American Medical Association, cites a study that proves that older adults with a solid sense

of purpose tend to retain strong hand grips and walking speeds--key indicators of how rapidly people are aging. Authors Eric Kim, Ichiro Kawachi and Ying Chen reported that these seniors were more likely to be physically active, take better care of themselves, were less susceptible to stress, and had improved cognitive skills.

What is usually lost as we get older is not our desire to contribute meaningfully to others but opportunities to do so. Retirement offers the best chance to explore options, even though it may require some pivots to find a good fit.

I am in my mid-seventies and have found my encore career writing for Lifestyles After 50. After spending 34 years as a high school English teacher who graded thousands of papers at night and on weekends, chaperoned dances and proms, served on bus duty during all kinds of inclement weather, broke up food fights, and faced disgruntled parents at PTA meetings, I am now doing what I want – and loving it.

I am meeting all sorts of fascinating people on my assignments, have learned more about the craft of writing than I ever did while teaching it, and am looking forward to bringing you all sorts of new stories in 2018.

So don’t waste another second -- start reimagining yourself and your second act!

Radiologists – Who We Are & What We Do I

f your physician has ever recommended that you get an imaging test, or if you’ve had a voluntary screening exam, then a radiologist has played an active role in your healthcare. Most of us have undergone at least one imaging test, from an x-ray to find out if a fall actually broke a bone, to an ultrasound to check for a soft tissue injury. Imaging technologists are also trained to keep you safe and make you feel as comfortable as possible throughout your visit.

After your test is completed, the resulting images are sent to one of RAO’s Board Certified/Certification radiologists, all of whom are medical doctors who specialize in one or more diagnostic areas, like musculoskeletal radiology or breast imaging, for example.

Some of RAO’s radiologists hold certificates of added qualification as well, meaning they underwent additional education and training in their specialties.

If treatment is needed, your radiologist can work directly with your doctor to help plan the next steps. When testing includes minimally-invasive procedures like biopsy, your radiologist will use image guidance to pinpoint the area being tested for superior accuracy and security.
