Setting and Achieving Goals as You Age

It’s easy to think that goal-setting or New Year’s resolutions are better suited for the younger generation. However, nothing could be further from the truth. You can benefit immensely from setting goals and working towards them. It’s a powerful way to maintain a sense of purpose and fulfillment in your golden years.

Reflect on Your Passions

The first step in goal-setting is to reflect on your passions and interests. What activities have always brought you joy? What skills have you always wanted to develop? Identifying your interests will help you set meaningful goals.

Set Specific, Attainable Goals

Once you’ve pinpointed your interests, set specific and attainable goals. Clearly define your goal. Establish a way to measure your progress and set a target date for achieving your goal.

Break Goals into Manageable Steps

Large goals can feel overwhelming, but breaking them down into smaller, manageable steps can make them more achievable. For instance, if your goal is to improve your physical fitness, start by walking 10 minutes a day and gradually increase the duration.

Seek Support and Accountability

Don’t hesitate to share your goals with friends and family members. Having a support system can provide motivation and encouragement.

Stay Flexible

Life is unpredictable, and sometimes circumstances change.

If a goal becomes unattainable due to health issues or other factors, adjust it to better suit your situation.

Celebrate Your Achievements

Celebrating small milestones along the way can boost your motivation and self-confidence. When you achieve a step toward your goal, take a moment to acknowledge your progress and reward yourself.

A New Year and Some New Resolutions January… a fresh start and a time to reflect on the past year and make resolutions for the new one.

This issue of Lifestyles After 50 is devoted to resolutions and healthy living, so I invite you to reflect on how you’re doing in your own life – have you made any resolutions? How are you managing to keep up with them? Last January we discussed your personal “Wellness Wheel.” Is your wheel more balanced now one year later – or do you still have a “flat tire”?

Here are my personal resolutions for each dimension: • Spiritual – Meditate and write daily in my journal.

The Magic of Mentoring (January is National Mentoring Month)

IS THERE A REAL NEED FOR MENTORS? According to Mentoring.org, one-third of today’s youth lack mentors. Meanwhile, countless senior adults are isolated, lonely and in need of companionship. What do you get when you combine the two? Profound opportunities for healthier, happier kids, seniors, and communities!

WHAT IS MENTORING MONTH? Established in 2002, National Mentoring Month is a campaign dedicated to recognizing mentoring and the impact it can have.

Whether it’s developing employees, supporting young people, or inspiring and preparing college students, mentoring enables people to unleash their full potential by learning from others. It’s also a time to celebrate the power of mentoring and encourage volunteer service.

Although we celebrate Mentoring Month throughout January, some days are even more special: January 7 is “I am a Mentor Day;” January 17 is “International Mentoring Day;” and January 21 is “Thank Your Mentor Day.” A STUDY PROVING MENTORSHIP WORKS An abundance of research indicates that young people derive many positive effects from participating in mentoring relationships. A study of nearly 1,000 youth at Big Brothers Big Sisters showed that kids with mentors are not only significantly less likely to use illegal drugs and alcohol, skip school, and get into physical fights, but they are also more confident about academics and social relationships.

Blast to the Past!

“You’re Sixteen” BY: RANDAL C. HILL Since you are reading this in a senior publication, you probably not only remember Ringo Starr’s “You’re Sixteen” from 50 years ago, but the original 1960 version by Johnny Burnette, as well.

Burnette’s only Top Ten career tune was the bouncy, violin-saturated “You’re Sixteen,” which ended up on the best-selling soundtrack of George Lucas’s 1973 nostalgia movie “American Graffiti.”

Ringo, the oldest Beatle, was born Richard Starkey in 1940 in the Dingle, Liverpool’s most depressed inner-city district. Housing there usually meant cramped quarters, poor ventilation and a rear door that opened onto an outhouse.

At age 13, he began a two-year stay in a sanitorium after contracting tuberculosis. He was encouraged to join the institution’s musical group after being heard beating upon the cabinets next to his bed with a mallet. “I was in the hospital band,” he has explained. “That’s where I really started playing. I never wanted anything else from then on.”

At 15, barely literate and uninterested in school, he took menial

local jobs until he found employment as a rock ‘n’ roll drummer and soon became well-known as a member of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, one of the premier rock groups in Liverpool. As he wore two rings on each hand, he adopted the stage name Rings (later Ringo) Starr. In 1962, he was hired by the Beatles to replace their dour original drummer Pete Best, who hadn’t meshed well with fun-loving John, Paul and George.

Ringo’s version of “You’re Sixteen” featured a “chugging” lope and a lot of help from his friends (get it?) on his million-selling Apple Records single. Among the many musicians who offered background support that day in the recording studio were—no surprise here—John Lennon, George Harrison and Paul McCartney.

Sometimes thought of as the neglected Beatle who dwelt in the Lennon-McCartney-Harrison shadow, Sir Richard Starkey is said to have a net worth of $350 million today.

We were born in the 40s, 50s and 60s.

We grew up in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

We dated, got married, and discovered the world in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

We ventured into the 80s and 90s, and we stabilized in the 2000s.

Ingredients: • 1 large bunch of collard greens, washed • ⅛ cup olive oil • ¼ teaspoon sea salt • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar • 6-8 sun-dried tomatoes, chopped

• ⅓ cup red onion, chopped • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Method: 1. De-stem and chop the collard greens.

2. Place greens in a large bowl.

Pour the olive oil on them and sprinkle on salt. Massage the oil and salt into the greens with your hands until all pieces are well coated.

3. Whisk together apple cider vinegar, sun-dried tomatoes, onions, garlic, red pepper flakes and ground pepper.

4. Pour apple cider vinegar dressing over the greens. Let marinate in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or overnight is best.

6 Great New Year’s Resolutions That Take Just 10 Minutes a Day

By Michele D. Baker New Year’s Resolutions commonly fail. Why? Because most resolutions require us to make behavioral changes without considering how to achieve them. (So they become like wishes.)

For example, we resolve to “lose weight” instead of “lose 1 lb. each week.” The goal is the same, but the approach is completely different. To successfully accomplish your 2024 New Year’s resolutions, carve out 10 minutes each day to focus on them. #1 – Give Your Brain a Workout The more you use your mind, the better it will work.

Reading, doing crosswords, playing cards, or learning something new are all good choices. Even socializing is a great boost for your brain!

Implement this new resolution by spending 10 minutes each day with a good book, on the phone with a friend, playing cards or taking a course online. #2 – Move Your Muscles Spend 10 minutes each day doing something for your body. If you can walk, great! If you can’t walk, spend the time sitting up straight and stretching or doing chair yoga. Do some household chores, weed the flower patch, or any other activity that will improve your balance, posture, and mood. #3 – Tame Your Temptations Alcohol, sugar, carbs… we all have vices. To tame these habitual temptations, spend 10 minutes a day *not* partaking. For instance, if you usually have a drink at 5 pm., wait until 5:10 p.m. and ask yourself if you still want it. If you usually eat dessert, wait 10 minutes and evaluate your craving for it. Or, reduce your typical amount by half. Even small reductions will have a big impact on your health over time.

#4 – Don’t Ignore Those Bad Feelings According to experts, 1 in 5 older adults suffers from depression or anxiety. Some possible signs: lingering sadness, tiredness, loss of appetite, or no longer enjoying doing things you once enjoyed. You may also worry excessively, have difficulty sleeping, be irritable, or want to be alone. If you have any of these signs for more than two weeks, talk to your healthcare provider and reach out to friends and family. #5 – Audit Your Budget Spend 10 minutes a week looking at your monthly budget. Is there a way to simplify or cut? Put a little aside so you have the freedom and flexibility to do something nice for yourself once in awhile and reduce financial stress. Investigate senior discounts and call your utilities provider.

Ask for a budget-billing plan, which keeps utility bills the same each month – the cost is spread evenly over 12 months. #6 – Spend Time With Loved Ones Spend 10 minutes a day nurturing a relationship. Whether you make a phone call, send an email, or write a letter, relationships matter. Grandchildren, friends, and social connections of all kinds prevent loneliness and give you a chance to offer and receive companionship. Senior adults with strong social support have a reduced risk of many health problems, including depression, high blood pressure and an unhealthy body mass index (BMI). Studies have even found that older adults with a rich social life are likely to live longer than their peers with fewer connections. Happy New Year!

THE HEALTHY GEEZER Q. When does menopause really begin?

Menopause, like many of the changes in a woman’s body through her lifetime, is caused by changes in hormone levels.

Menopausal transition, called “perimenopause,” is the time when a woman’s body is close to menopause. Periods may become irregular. A woman may start to feel hot flashes and night sweats. Perimenopause usually begins about 2 to 4 years before the last menstrual period. It ends when menopause begins.

Postmenopause follows menopause and lasts the remainder of a woman’s life. Pregnancy is no longer possible. There may be symptoms such as vaginal dryness long after menopause.

The process of “reproductive aging” begins around age 40. Declining levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone change a woman’s periods.

These hormones maintain the health of the vagina and uterus, and regulate the menstrual cycles.

The most common symptoms of menopause are: Period changes. Many women become irregular.

Flow levels get heavier or lighter. There may be spotting between periods.

Hot flashes. These are sudden rushes of heat that can last seconds or minutes. Perspiring and shivering can follow. Flashes can be trivial or strong enough to wake a woman with “night sweats.”

Heart disease is a major threat for older women.

In fact, heart disease is the major cause of death in women, killing more women than lung or breast cancer.

In menopause, a doctor might suggest taking estrogen and progesterone, known as “hormone replacement therapy” or “HRT.” HRT involves taking estrogen plus progestin. HRT may relieve hot flashes and reduce loss of bone. However, HRT increases the risk for heart disease, stroke and breast cancer. But it appears to decrease the risk of colon cancer.

Phytoestrogens are estrogen-like substances found in soy, wild yams, and herbs such as black cohosh and dong quai; they may relieve some symptoms of menopause. The government does not regulate phytoestrogens. Scientists are studying some of these plant estrogens to find out if they work and are safe.

Vaginal and bladder problems. The genital area can get drier and thinner. Infections can become more common. Other problems can make it hard to hold urine.

Be sure to tell your doctor if you decide to eat more foods with phytoestrogens. Any food or over-the-counter product that you use for its druglike effects could interact with other prescribed drugs or cause an overdose.

Difficulties with sex. Vaginal dryness can make intercourse painful.

SPOUSES OWNING CARS JOINTLY IS JUST PLAIN DUMB

It is not uncommon for spouses to title family cars in both names. I imagine this comes from a misguided attempt to avoid probate over the cars if one spouse should die. However, this is an unfounded concern as a car is almost always exempt from probate as long as it is paid for.

The possible downside of a car being jointly titled is that if the driver of the car negligently causes an accident, both owners, because they are now indispensable parties, must be named as defendants if a lawsuit is filed. The law requires this as a car is considered a “dangerous instrumentality”. And if liability for damages resulting from the accident is found, all the assets owned by the couple (with the exception of homestead real property), such as bank accounts, non-homestead real property, non-IRA investment accounts, etc., will be subject to attachment through the lawsuit. But if only one spouse is sued because the car was owned by only one spouse, these marital assets remain insulated from judgment creditors as Tenancy by the Entireties assets.

One can see how a family could easily, and unnecessarily, be wiped out financially just because the family car is owned by both spouses.

Tracheal Collapse and Coughing By Audrey Guida, DVM Tracheal collapse is a disease that concerns a dog’s windpipe or airway that causes them to have a loud, dry hacking cough. The trachea consists of C-shaped rings of cartilage that hold open the trachea. Over time or with age, those rings can soften (called tracheomalacia), and cause the C-shaped rings to widen and flatten. When this happens, the membrane over the top of the rings stretches out, and becomes loose. With breathing in and out, the membrane collapses, tickles the trachea, and causes the dog to cough. Sometimes it can even sound like the dog is trying to cough something up.

More often than not, toy breed dogs like Poodles, Yorkshire terriers, and Pomeranians are affected by tracheal collapse. Usually, the disease manifests around middle age, but it can occur at any age.

A lot of dogs with collapsed tracheas do not show symptoms, but there are factors that can exacerbate them. Most commonly these factors include obesity, anesthesia with an endotracheal tube, or heart enlargement (the heart pushes the trachea upwards). We can sometimes diagnose tracheal collapse with neck and chest x-rays, but not always.

The good news is, tracheal collapse is manageable! It is important to make sure the pet is wearing a harness and not a neck lead, as pulling on a leash around the neck can worsen coughing. If the pet is overweight, weight loss will be helpful. Cough suppressants or steroids are very useful in controlling coughing too.

Sometimes tracheal collapse can become an emergency. If a dog becomes too distressed, the trachea can collapse enough to prevent proper oxygenation.

Tranquilization can help alleviate the stress and reduce the heavy breathing and coughing. Sometimes stress can be too much where the trachea will fully collapse, and if the pet’s gums are turning purple or blue, this is an emergency and the dog needs to be seen right away by the closest emergency veterinarian.

Bourbon Milk Punch Makes 1 cocktail • 3/4 cup whole milk • 1/4 cup heavy cream • 2 oz. Bourbon

• 1-½ oz. simple syrup (recipe below) • 1/2 oz. vanilla extract

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until well-chilled and pour the cocktail into a rocks glass. Garnish with grated nutmeg and a cinnamon stick if desired.

Armchair Adventures: Camels of Tunisia – Humps, Lumps, and All

By Evelyn Kelly, PhD A highlight of any trip to the Middle East – Morocco, Tunisia, Jordan or Egypt – is riding a camel, or at least sitting on one for a photo to show everyone back home.

We are in Tunisia riding through the Sahara Desert and are excited that we will soon reach the camel farm for a 30-minute ride into the desert.

Approaching the farm, we hear mournful bellowing like the “Call of the Wild.” Females are in season, and the males are calling. We will be riding male camels.

For centuries, camels, known as the ships of the desert, have had great significance. In Morocco, one man told me he would trade three camels for my daughter Natalie. She laughed and said, “Am I only worth three?” He assured her that was a great price: camels are worth lots of money.

We don special long gowns that are the color of light brown sugar and wrap our heads with bathroom towels like the ones shepherds wear in Christmas pageants. We are no longer tourists but true Bedouins riding the magnificent ships of the desert.

One of the grooms confides to Natalie that he will get her the “BMW of camels,” the best riding one. She mounts BMW’s single hump that is covered with a packed bundle of rags that look like recent acquisitions from the thrift store.

He is on his knees and looks happy as she climbs aboard.

Not so with my camel. He screams and spits. Immediately does not like me, and I don’t care for him, either; he really had a bad attitude. I attempt to mount, but the lumpy bundle pack keeps slipping; I ask for another one with a better personality. My new camel is mild-mannered and laid back.

I ride with joy and even have my picture taken with him.

Riding on a camel for half an hour can be a lifetime on your hip and joints when you are sitting in a rocking chariot on top of a step ladder, hanging onto the horn for dear life.

At least I made it for 30 minutes.

Jan, another member of our party, is stuck with my camel reject. He does not like her either. He behaves like a disgruntled child and keeps swishing his tail up her back.

She walks a miserable 30 minutes with him. When she dismounts all up and down the back of her outfit are dark brown streaks of unmentionable origin.

Just like people, camels have feelings, moods, and unpredictable personalities. They have reputations of being bad-tempered and obstinate from the fear of being abused.

Some specialists say this assessment is not fair. But I say, if you are going to ride a camel, be smart and ask for the BMW.

“Rebalancing to Become a Better Parent, Professional and Partner”- by Kathy A. Megyeri

“Rebalance, How Women Lead, Parent, Partner and Thrive” by Monica Brand, Lisa Neuberger, and Wendy Teleki Wendy Teleki is an attractive, middle-aged woman who holds advanced degrees, is a mother of three teenagers, a successful career executive, a helpmate to a politically active spouse with MS, and a devoted daughter—someone who has it all. With two other women like her, Monica Brand Engel and Lisa Neuberger Fernandez, Teleki has written a book to share their winning formula and given the rest of us some chance too, as the book cover claims, to “lead, parent, partner and thrive.”

Nancy Cordes, Chief White House Correspondent for CBS News, writes, “Finally, a road map for working parents seeking to balance meaningful careers, raise good children, give back to society, and practice self-care in an everchanging world.” The authors are willing to share what has worked well for them individually and as a group.

There’s Monica Brand Engel, a wife, mother, investor, entrepreneur and co-founder of Quona Capital and Lisa Neuberger Fernandez, a wife, mother, sustainability strategist and director of Accenture. And of course, Teleki, who heads the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative at the World Bank in Washington, DC which helps to increase financing for women entrepreneurs in over 60 developing countries. She’s also an author and holds an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School of Business. The three of them divulge their secrets in juggling

successful careers, raising kids, building strong relationships and still be likeable, fun-loving friends who care for themselves and each other as they examine the trade-offs, conflicts, and juggling acts is a real gift.

Readers, all who gave this book 4-star reviews, claim it is applicable to men as well. The insights they share, the detailed, practical, and useful tips drawn from their collective wisdom and from other sources make it, as one reader says, “a book I wish I had read earlier in my career and one that I will give to others for it shows the importance of having support, being self-aware, choosing your partners well and even admitting that some aspects of life may not be prioritized but that’s OK because you can always ‘rebalance them’.”

The process requires “intent, discipline, time out, and finding your own ‘wolf pack’.” The authors refer to flight attendants’ admonishment that “in case of emergency, put on your own oxygen mask first” because especially as we age, taking care of ourselves is an investment in the future that doesn’t just benefit ourselves but our families, our work and our communities. By Michele D. Baker, adapted from an article from the National Institute on Aging (nia.nih.gov) We all want a good night’s rest – enough sleep helps you stay healthy and alert. But many older people don’t sleep well. If you’re always sleepy or you find it hard to get enough sleep at night, it may be time to see a doctor. Waking up every day feeling tired is a sign that you are not getting the rest you need.

SLEEP AND AGING Older adults need about the same amount of sleep as all adults—7-9 hours each night. There are many reasons why older people may not get enough sleep at night. Feeling sick or being in pain can make it hard to sleep. Some medicines can keep you awake. Lack of rest can be a problem, though, as it can make you irritable, forgetful, depressed, and more prone to falls or accidents.

INSOMNIA IS COMMON IN OLDER ADULTS Insomnia is the most common sleep problem in adults aged 60 and older. People with this condition have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Insomnia can last for days, months, and even years. Having trouble sleeping can mean you take a long time to fall asleep, wake up many times in the night, wake up early and are unable to get back to sleep, wake up tired, or feel very sleepy during the day.

Over-the-counter sleep aids or doctor-prescribed medications may help when used for a short time. But remember, medicines aren’t a cure for insomnia.

JUST RELAX Some people find that relaxing their bodies puts them to sleep.

Imagine your toes are completely relaxed, then your feet, and

then your ankles. Work your way up the rest of your body, section by section. You may drift off to sleep before getting to the top of your head.

Use your bedroom only for sleeping. After turning off the light, give yourself about 20 minutes to fall asleep. If you’re still awake and not drowsy, get out of bed. When you feel sleepy, go back to bed.

MORE IDEAS FOR A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP Follow a regular sleep schedule. Go to sleep and get up at the same time each day, even on weekends or when you are traveling. Avoid napping in the late afternoon or evening.

Develop a bedtime routine that includes relaxing activities such as reading a book, listening to soothing music, or soaking in a warm bath.

Avoid late night light in the bedroom: television, using your computer, cell phone, or reading on a tablet. Alarming or unsettling shows or movies, like horror movies, may keep you awake.

Keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature and as quiet as possible.

Exercise at regular times each day but not within 3 hours of your bedtime. Avoid eating large meals close to bedtime. Stay away from caffeine late in the day, which can keep you awake. And remember—alcohol won’t help you sleep.

If you feel tired and unable to do your activities for more than 2 or 3 weeks, you may have a sleep problem. Talk with your doctor about changes you can make to get a better night’s sleep.
