It’s hard to believe that in this state of natural bliss, I’m actually hard at work - thanks to the modern technology of a little friend name Siri - the Apple iPhone’s built-in personal assistant who now converts many of my stories from speech to text.

My favorite part of the book is a very fascinating psychological component to looking at movement as a lifestyle rather than a compartmentalized activity to stay “thin” or “fit.” Katy’s book helps to adjust your daily habits of movement as well as offer some corrective exercises that can be done to mimic natural motions that we often miss in our modern lives.

Why I’m most excited to share this natural “movement” is the strange paradox it represents. While I’m listening to Bowman’s podcasts on a stroll after work, and my grandfather is perusing apps and DVDs devoted to Tai Chi, I can’t help but smile at the irony that the very technological revolution that spawned the loss of our natural movement patterns is the same one that is helping us reclaim our vitality. Both his strength and balance helped my grandfather survive cancer and continue to fly free into his 70s and access an ancient Chinese martial art from his iPad. Here’s to new old moves...

ocial Security is often revered as a subject for which many can identify the problems but few have solid answers. At least answers that are acceptable for the masses who either depend on the benefits from the program now or those who are paying into Social Security with plans to draw from the program in the future. In years long gone by there were no major issues or concerns regarding the Social Security program in the U.S., but in recent years data indicates that the coffers that provide the funding for the program may well be in jeopardy and that Social Security could likely be in big financial trouble.

Consider this: According to the Social Security Trustees report, the social program’s main fund has a surplus that is invested in special U.S. government bonds.

Three years from now, in 2019, Social Security’s total income receipts from payroll taxes and interest will start to fall behind the total cost of benefit payouts on an annual basis. After 2019, additional money will be taken out of the Social Security trust fund to pay benefits by selling some of those IOUs from the government.

Most agree that a major reason for recent concerns involving Social Security is that this particular benefits program of the federal government is underfunded.

In reality there is no actual government fund that is able to supply the benefits for this program and, unlike other private sector retirement and insurance programs, the funds held by Social Security are not invested or placed for safekeeping so as to encourage financial growth.

Funding for Social Security actually comes from those still in the

workforce who are paying employment taxes that are contributed to the Social Security fund.

In the past the mechanics of the program have been sufficient to sustain its funding because the active workforce was much larger than the group of retirees drawing Social Security benefits. But in recent years this has seen a dramatic change.

For decades there were 16 workers for every one retired person drawing from the fund.

And now the ratio has changed to the point that there are only three people supplying the funding for every single person who is retired. In the not too distant future it’s estimated that the ratio between those working and providing the funding for Social Security and those who are retired will likely drop to about 2 to 1 which will further endanger the sustainability of the funding for the program. While the November presidential election is less than a month away, the two candidates representing parties of the donkey and elephant have avoided detailed discussions about what they might do

to resolve the seemingly always crisis facing sustainability of Social Security.

Even though both Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton talk about Social Security and acknowledge that the pension program for seniors continues on a path that provides no guarantee for the future, neither has said exactly what their respective plan might be to salvage the longstanding program and revive its viability.

Ironically, while both candidates differ so broadly on so many national issues including immigration, defense, foreign relations and other topics, they seem to somewhat mesh their campaign strategies and promises together when it comes to speaking about Social Security.

Both hold it’s a program in which seniors should have confidence.

Both seem to believe that disrupting Social Security or dramatically changing the way the program is conducted would be a grave error and an unforgivable sin with respect to how they each would conduct the business of the Oval Office.

Clinton has said that “Social Security must continue to guarantee dignity in retirement for future generations.”

Campaign statements she has made are relatively clear that she believes higher-income workers should pay more through higher payroll taxes to help keep the system alive and well, and that higher-income beneficiaries should pay more income tax on Social Security benefits. Trump says he will sustain Social Security by establishing “an economy that is robust and growing.”

However, his campaign expresses no specific ways or means or exactly how Social Security might be benefited from a vibrant and growing economy.

Clinton has maintained that she will “fight any attempts to gamble seniors’ retirement security on the stock market through privatization.” That she will “oppose reducing annual costof-living adjustments.”

She has committed to oppose Republican efforts to raise the retirement age” saying it is “an unfair idea that will particularly hurt the seniors who have

worked the hardest throughout their lives.”

And finally she states she will “oppose closing the longterm shortfall on the backs of the middle class, whether through benefits cuts or tax increases.”

Other add-ons to these positions offered by Clinton and more or less consistent with what her campaign’s website states is that she would enhance benefits for women who are widows and those who took significant time out of the paid workforce to take care of their children, aging parents or ailing family members.

Trump seems to reason that much of Social Security’s problems can be found or solved perhaps through different paths relative to taxation.

He has told AARP seniors can get relief through tax reform that streamlines tax brackets, removing carve-outs for special interests and eliminating the alternative minimum tax and death tax.

He thinks that reforming corporate taxes, including a reduction in the corporate income tax rate can be helpful to seniors as well as renegotiating trade agreements and repealing the Dodd-Frank Act and the Affordable Care Act. He says attacking fraud and waste in the federal government and reducing the size of the federal workforce can be important and argues that reforming immigration policies that will “save hundreds of billions of dollars a year in education, health care and public safety costs,” can also provide advantages for the senior population.

Although Trump’s website contains no stated positions on Social Security, he’s said throughout the campaign that he opposes any changes to the program.

Pumpkin flowers are edible, pretty on the plate and delicious lightly deep-fried! Pumpkins offer so much: delicate flowers, healthy seeds, pumpkin pie filling and of course, the scariest face on the block. Visit your favorite pumpkin patch, farmer’s market, roadside stand, or grocery store and pick up some Sugar, Jack or Baby Boo today!

on’t let their wicked smiles scare you - pumpkins can be quite an edible treat. Although they’re best known as scary halloween decorations, some of the sweeter varieties of pumpkin make a few of the finest fall desserts.

Pumpkins to look for Sugar or Sugar Pie pumpkins are considered the best for baking and cooking since they’re a bit sweeter to the taste than others. You may also want to try small to medium size Jack O’Lantern pumpkins; but stay away from the large ones as they can be extra stringy and coarse. Jack B. Little and Baby Boo miniature pumpkin varieties are tasty but, because they contain small amounts of edible flesh, they are mostly used as bowls to hold other foods, candles or flower arrangements. Whatever variety you choose, be sure to select a pumpkin that is heavy for its size and free of blemishes. Store, uncooked, in a refrigerator for up to three months or in a cool, dry place for about a month.

Pumpkin puree and deep-fried edible flowers are just a few of the myriad of ways to enjoy a pumpkin.

SIMPLE PUMPKIN PURÉE 1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. Cut pumpkin in half; scoop out the seeds and pulp. Save the seeds for toasting, if desired).

3. Place halves, cut side down, on a baking sheet and place them in oven for 45 minutes or until tender.

4. Cool slightly. Peel off skin, cut into chunks.

5. Place, a few chunks at a time, in a food processor; pulse until smooth. Add water for a softer puree.

6. Use immediately or freeze in small containers until needed.

Quick Tip: A great way to reduce calories is to substitute a bit of pumpkin purée in breads, muffins and cakes as an alternative to a recipe’s oil and butter ingredients.

Ingredients • Two cans King Oscar Sardines with Spicy Cracked Pepper • 8 lavash flat breads or flour tortillas • 6 oz herbed goat cheese • 1 head romaine lettuce, shredded • 1 Belgian endive • 1-1/2 cup diced red, green and yellow bell peppers • 1/2 sweet onion, diced • 1/2 cup cilantro • 1 tbs olive oil from can, with peppers Drain sardines, reserve the cracked pepper. In a large mixing bowl, combine lettuce, endive, 1 cup bell peppers, onion and cilantro with 1 tbsp of the oil and cracked pepper from the can. Lightly smear flat breads or tortillas with goat cheese, fill with vegetable mixture, gently layer on sardines, and roll closed. Cut each roll in half or

into slices, as desired. Sprinkle remaining diced peppers over plate as a garnish. Serves 8.

• 1 dozen eggs • 1/2 cup light mayonnaise • 2 tsp Dijon style mustard • 2 tsp sherry or a mild vinegar • 2 fresh scallions sliced, including whites • 1/4 tsp salt Preparation Boil eggs and then cool and slice in half. Remove yokes and mix with ingredients. Spoon into a zip-lock bag and cut off a corner. Pipe yolk into halved egg whites and garnish.

nce a year around the end of October, the U.S. will enter flu season, sparking millions of parents and grandparents to pull their children kicking and screaming all the way to the doctor’s office. Although any needle is an unwelcomed one, we tolerate these injections because at our hearts, we just want to be healthy. However, what is often unknown—or worse neglected—is that seniors have an inherently weaker immune system, leading to increased rates of medical complications and death from viruses like the flu—particularly those suffering from lung disease such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema.

I

f you’ve got an investment portfolio, the concept of dividends can be one of the more difficult ones to understand. By definition, a dividend is a sum of money paid regularly by a company to its shareholders out of its profits. Investors who own stock in a public company may be eligible to receive dividends if they own the stock as of the ex-dividend date.

Most American-based companies that pay dividends do so on a quarterly basis, while many foreign-based companies only pay dividends once a year, based on their annual profits.

Paying a dividend every three months would seem to imply a certain stability to this quarterly payment, and many investors assume that it’s guaranteed. This is not at all the case, as the payment is ultimately a reflection of the future profitability of the company, which is obviously uncertain. According to Standard & Poor’s, last year 394 companies reduced their dividends, a 38% increase over 2014.

And these are not confined to small, obscure companies that you’ve never heard of. Look no further than General Electric, which in 2009 cut its dividend 68%, after paying a dividend for more than 100 years, and increasing the amount of this dividend for more than 50 years.

Another client misconception about dividends is that the payment is an extra

form of return, and that buying the stock right before its record date will result in “found money”. This is incorrect, since the price of the stock will be reduced by the amount of the dividend two days before this record date (this is the date investors must be on the company’s books to receive the dividend). For example, if a stock trading at $31 has an upcoming quarterly dividend payment of $1, it will open trading two days before the record date at a price of $30. This is known as the stock trading “ex-dividend”.

So if some dividends are good, more are better, right? Not so fast, although in my experience many investors believe this. As I always stress to clients, the way to compare any investment to another is by total rate of return, which is the sum of the dividends or interest received, and the price movement of the investment. While a stock that has an annual dividend yield of 8% may seem attractive, if the price declines 10% during the year, the total return for that year is -2%.

It is not a coincidence that many stocks with eye-popping annual dividend yields are often mediocre investments, because their price tends to drift lower over time.

If you have the tolerance to own individual stocks, it is important to dig deeper than what the company’s annual dividend yield is. As your parents told you, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Thinking of downsizing? Think twice...

want to downsize, however, the Reyes decided it was the right option for them.

They are currently in the process of decluttering their home and researching where they want to live.

To keep the family unified during the holidays, they plan to rent a big house in the mountains (with everyone sharing the cost) and strive to create new experiences of snow-filled Christmases for the grandchildren.

“Life is all about the memories,” she said, “but who says you can’t continue to make new and even better ones.”

o downsize or not to downsize?

That’s the question that faces just about everyone as adult children leave the nest, travel plans expand and financial belts tighten.

Obviously, the call to downsize is louder and clearer if one loses a spouse, their good health, or a source of vital income - making the choice of downsizing much less of a choice.

But some have embarked on what they felt was an inevitable part of life’s passages only to be hugely disappointed.

They’ve sold the family home, moved to a condo or a senior living facility – even to a smaller, less expensive home in the middle of nowhere, only to regret it later.

For many, “aging in place” may be a far better solution.

There are a ton of books on downsizing that boast the advantages: freedom to travel, financial savings, change of scenery, more time to play and relax.

Heck, just the thought of fewer things to clean and dust is enough to sway some.

These are all positive benefits that shouldn’t be overlooked, but just be aware, when it comes to downsizing, one size does not fit all. Here are a few things to ponder before making the big move.

Smaller isn’t necessarily cheaper If you have to rent storage space to store the Christmas decorations you can’t part with, or, if you move to a state with higher taxes, savings could be minimal or nonexistent.

In 2012, Donald and Janice Baker moved to a smaller “bargain” home in rural Florida, but the house needed a lot of repairs and renovations that quickly ate up their savings.

Quality healthcare wasn’t available when they needed it, nor were part-time jobs that could have supplemented their retirement income.

Looking back, they say they wish they would have stayed at their alreadyrenovated home on a canal near Tampa, surrounded by friends and family, where he could have enjoyed a part-time stint as a tug boat captain.

“We sold during a softer market and now we can’t afford to buy back in that neighborhood,” he said.

Consider a reverse mortgage...maybe For some, a reverse mortgage is a good alternative to downsizing as long as Lifestyles After 50 • October 2016 • page 18

Before making a move, make sure it makes sense. you can stay in your home for the rest of your life, you won’t need the equity before you die, you don’t need to leave your children a family home, and you are able to pay taxes and insurance.

- Herman (Chattanooga, TN) Dear Herman, Fall Open Enrollment, also known as the Annual Election Period, runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 each year. This is the time of the year when Medicare beneficiaries can make changes to their existing coverage.

If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan or a stand-alone Part D plan, your plan should send you an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) that lists any changes to your plan for 2017. These changes could be that the plan will charge a different monthly premium, cover different services, or change its formulary (the plan’s list of covered drugs). Read this notice carefully to see if any of the changes affect you. For instance, if your ANOC tells you that your Part D plan will have an annual deductible next year, you may want to choose a new plan.

There are a number of changes you can make during Fall Open Enrollment, all of which will become effective January 1.

ust two years ago Andre Hicks-Dolphin weighed 493 pounds. Seeing her today at age 50, it’s hard to imagine that she was once stuck in what many call a “miserable cycle of morbid obesity.” That’s because as of this month she’s lost 178 pounds; she`s healthier, happier and downright beautiful.

What makes this courageous women stand out among her peers is not only those triple digit pounds she recently sent packing; it`s that she did it despite two recent bouts with breast cancer and multiple chemotherapy treatments.

Just ask her, and she will tell you she achieved her second chance at life through hard work at the gym, a realistic diet and a newfound desire for health and wellness that she discovered through her strong religious faith and the power of prayer. A success story of the recent fit lifestyle explosion, Andre is one of the many uniquely special women breaking new ground in improved fitness and massive weight loss, and doing it all without the aid of dangerous surgery or fad driven weight loss gimmicks. Andre could serve as the poster child for this movement, and she lives right here in Tampa Bay. A 1983 graduate of Tampa`s Jefferson High School, Andre grew up in Tampa`s Carver City neighborhood. Bad eating habits, together with little to no exercisefueled a continual weight gain throughout her adult life. However, it was just two short years ago that Andre tipped her doctors’ scale at 493 pounds. Those dangerously excessive pounds, coupled with the fear and anxiety of her recently completed cancer treatments, left her devastated and with little hope of attaining a healthy life.

Then one day, a simple daily action, and a stern-but-loving observation by her sister, changed the trajectory of her life.

“I`ll never forget that dark day”, Andre said, “I was sitting on the front porch with my sister, who is my best friend. It was a casual Sunday afternoon after church, when I got up to go into the kitchen and check the progress of our family dinner.”

As usual, the meal consisted of an oversized batch of fried chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese and other fatty foods. Adding to the calorie bonanza: several trays of butter and sugar infused corn bread. “When I returned, I was completely fatigued and could hardly

breathe,” Andre said. “My sister looked at me, and said, with a frightened glare, ‘what`s wrong with you sister, what do you want to do, die?” Andre said her sister had seen an “image of near death-like exhaustion” on her face. “With her frightening words, something spiritual enveloped my entire body at that very moment and I knew then that a profound change was about to enter into my physically and mentally over-taxed existence,” she said.

As with other overweight people, her condition didn’t happen overnight. And in Andre`s case, depression, steroids for her cancer treatment and poor eating habits exacerbated her problem. What Andre did next changed the course of her life forever. More importantly, she did it all by herself: 1. Saw her primary care doctor for a full medical evaluation.

2. Signed up at a gym,where she goes five days a week, two hours a session (an hr, of cardio and an hr of weight training) 3. Connected with a certified life coach made sure Andre stayed with the program by drinking the prescribed protein shakes and vitamin products.

4. Refused to quit the program and kept believing she could do it.

5. Prayed everyday to give her strength to stay on a healthy path.

“The first week I lost 13 pounds,” she said. “I was so excited that I could actually see my hard work pay off. I stayed focused, rallied to the cause and made the life changes necessary to be healthy, happy and spiritually strong.”

Although Andre continues to lose weight, at present she is facing another serious health challenge with a recent diagnosis of cancer of the spine. However, she’s not about to let this newest setbackhold her back. The married, mother of four still goes to the gym five mornings a week at 5:00 a.m. and has become a life coach herself.

The reading of a will

n the wall behind my desk hangs a copy of a painting entitled “The Reading of a Will” completed in 1820 by Scottish painter Sir David Wilkie. For such a relatively small work (the original displayed in the Neue Pinakothek Museum in Munich, Germany measures only 69mm by 105mm) it is richly detailed.

The painting depicts a lawyer seated at his desk in the process of “reading the Will” of his recently deceased client to a large and diverse gathering of people. All in the group of some 20 people, with the exception of the late Testator’s adolescent children, appear to be keenly interested in what the lawyer is reading to them.

The relationships of many of the people depicted in the painting to the presumably wealthy Testator are easily discernible.

The widow, who is clearly distressed by the sheer number of people interested in the contents of her late husband’s Will; the Testator’s young mistress, with her infant child whose paternity will undoubtedly prove to be in question. Others depicted are less obvious, but some could be a number of distant relatives, previously unknown and now coming out of the woodwork; a business partner or two, perhaps; and several impatient creditors.

Even though the actual reading of a Will by lawyers is now nothing more than a cliche′, the same uncomfortable dynamics portrayed in the painting “The Reading of a Will” can often be just as true today. Which is: once you die, many people, and perhaps some you might never had thought about or even have known, will attempt in some way to benefit from your estate.

This is why it is so important that everyone have a well written Will that is clear as to the maker’s intent and not open

to interpretation. It is unlikely that this goal of eliminating all ambiguity in your Will can be accomplished without the assistance of an experienced estate planning attorney.

ou take your Miniature Schnauzer “Fluffy” to your veterinarian for her annual check up. After listening to her chest, the veterinarian tells you that “Fluffy” has a heart murmur. Suddenly you start to panic. “What does this mean for her!?” you think to yourself. Here are a few basics about heart murmurs to put your mind at ease so you can make the best medical decisions for your pet.

A heart murmur is the sound heard on a stethoscope when blood from one heart chamber flows back into the previous chamber. This is due to a heart valve that is faulty (ie. does not close or seal properly). Heart murmurs are graded from one (least intense) to six (most intense).

As a general rule of thumb, smaller dogs tend to develop

heart murmurs more frequently than larger dogs, although some large dogs will develop them too. Some breeds, including Schnauzers and King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, have a breed predilection for developing heart murmurs.

Some dogs can live for

years after an initial diagnosis of an audible heart murmur.

T

o true naturalists and ecologists, there are a precious few landscapes in America as impressive as the Everglades. Touted as one of the most unique landscapes in the world, this National Park is the definitive park of its home state - and though it is entirely contained in Florida its vital importance resonates far beyond the sunshine state, preserving species found nowhere else in the world. This swampy paradise is a perfect place to leave the technological world behind and embark on the journey through plants and animals unseen.

Unfortunately, this natural treasure is changing, as it continues to be whittled down through land conversion, drainage and climate change - sea level rise, reduced precipitating and higher temperatures. While the Everglades may no longer exist in its earlier glory of 11 million acres, there are citizens devoted to conserving it, like The Nature Conservancy who have been working to protect more than 360,000 acres of this critical system. But there’s still much work to be done to keep this one-of-a-kind environment thriving. Drained wetlands must be restored, invasive species removed and adaptations to climate change managed. As Conservationist Douglas notes, preserving the Everglades may be our test, and I wouldn’t miss the chance to help see it shine.

he Florida Orchestra season is off to a wild, wonderful start in October with some of the most beloved music of all time performed by the largest professional orchestra in Florida, under the leadership of Music Director Michael Francis.

Cirque de la Symphonie (Oct. 7-9 with Saturday matinee): The whole family will flip for the Pops season opener, with cirque-style acrobats, aerialists, strongmen and contortionists performing in front of (and above!) the orchestra as it plays favorites from John Williams, Tchaikovsky, Ravel and more.

The Music of Genesis Starring Daryl Stuermer (Oct. 14): Virtuoso guitarist Daryl Stuermer of Genesis rocks out with the orchestra for hits like I Can’t Dance, Invisible Touch, and more. One night only at the Mahaffey Theater.

Free Pops in the Park (Oct. 15): It’s Star Wars under the stars at the mega-popular free concert in waterfront Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg, presented by Ashley HomeStore. This year includes music from two Star Wars movies, the original and The Force Awakens, along with an explosive patriotic finale with fireworks.
