Media studies draws on the social sciences, arts, and humanities to explore the interrelation of communication means and messages and their influence on societies of the past, present, and future.

Topics of scholarly investigation range widely: the aesthetics of communication design; consumer research; visual systems; documentary and interactive media; cultures of sound and music; discourse analysis; critical theory; history and memory; politics and mass media; messages of media in relation to race, class, and gender; the evolution of media technologies; and the new global media culture. Our programs offer a variety of opportunities for original academic research, imaginative projects, and civic engagement.

Media Production The New School Media Studies curriculum incorporates a production component in all programs: MA, MS, and certificates. Students have access to state-of-the-art studios and equipment for film and video, audio, and Web-based interactive projects.

Courses and workshops cover documentary, narrative, and experimental approaches in video, film, audio, and multimedia production. Courses are offered in screenwriting, visual and sound aesthetics, social media and Web design, cinematography and editing, programming and data visualization, digital and motion graphic design, film, and transmedia.

Media Management In an environment where technologies, platforms, and entire industries are changing every day, business knowledge and strong management skills are critical to career success.

At The New School, you’ll learn principles and best practices of responsible and effective business management that will equip you for a career in today’s media and communication industries. Courses cover critical management topics, including leadership, economics, marketing, distribution, ethics, civic engagement.

Fine Cuts is the annual juried student film show.

Mixed Messages is the annual juried student interactive media and installation show.

Truth Be Told is the annual documentary film show.

Our students’ film and video productions have been screened in leading festivals such as the Berlin Film Festival, Sundance, Hot Docs, Human Rights Watch International Festival, LA Short Fest, and Tribeca Film Festival.

Their work has been honored with a number of awards including Academy Awards and Student Academy Awards.

This dynamic graduate program applies social theory and research, art and technology, and business education to the investigation of social communication and emergent media forms.

Informed by the progressive ideals of The New School, it is designed to open up a wide range of careers—creative, academic, and professional.

Curriculum The curriculum builds a foundation in both media history and theory and media production and practice. From there, students can choose to be either generalists or specialists, focusing on one of several areas defined by the School of Media Studies or designing their own. Students become familiar with a variety of media cultures and platforms and learn to choose the right tools for the task. The MA provides solid preparation for careers in commercial advertising and PR; nonprofit and community organizing; film, television, and radio; social and interactive media development; and education.

Degree Requirements The Master of Arts is awarded for completion of 39 credits as described below. All students must take three foundation courses and a minimum of two production courses. Students can elect to pursue a thesis track, taking eight elective courses and producing a master’s thesis, which can be a research paper or an independent media project on any platform. They can take nine elective courses for the non-thesis track. The curriculum is designed to be completed in two years of full-time study, but part-time study is an option.

Examples of Management Electives – Digital Media: Strategy and Implementation – Media Management and Leadership – Media Economics – Competitive Strategies: Branding Digital Cinema Production Option This focus area option provides students with a practical hands-on understanding of how to create a short digital film from conception to completion (planning, production, editing) using available digital tools. It includes instruction in the theory and application of digital formats, compression and workflow, lenses, basic lighting and audio recording, and the social and cultural dimensions of digital film. A working professional faculty guides students to hone their conceptual skills, develop their voice, and learn new modes of filmic expression.

Online Option Many courses in the School of Media Studies are offered online. Students can complete all MA degree requirements online or take any combination of online and on-campus courses. This program was named best online degree for flexibility by onlinecollege.org. *Note: The New School offers graduate-level certificate programs in documentary media studies and media management. Courses taken for either certificate may count toward MA degree requirements if the student applies for and is admitted to the degree program.

This innovative graduate program is designed for individuals pursuing management careers in the media sector as well as media professionals seeking career advancement. The MS curriculum brings together media business practices and critical analysis of communication industries and their products.

Curriculum The course of study is flexible, interdisciplinary, and futureoriented. It introduces principles and practices of responsible and effective management applicable to television, radio, cinema, publishing, advertising, journalism, and social and interactive media. Adaptation to the rapid evolution of media platforms is emphasized.

The Graduate Certificate in Documentary Media Studies is an intensive professional education program for prospective documentarians. In the course of a year, each student develops, shoots, directs, and edits an original short documentary movie on a New York City–related subject, which is screened at the annual Truth Be Told Documentary Festival. Production work is informed by courses on the history and theory of documentary filmmaking.

Curriculum The certificate is awarded for completion of six courses (18 credits) and a short digital video documentary. The curriculum consists of five required courses (15 credits) and one elective (3 credits) chosen from the School of Media Studies’ graduate curriculum.

Other Program Activities Doc Talks: Doc Talks is a biweekly curated screening series featuring guest artists in the field of documentary cinema.

Master Classes: Every spring, as part of the Dorothy H. Hirshon Film Festival, a distinguished film director leads master classes to which certificate students are invited.

Fine Cuts is a semi-annual screening of “finished” films, the best of which are selected for the New School Invitational Film Show, held every spring.

Truth Be Told is a public screening of all documentaries made by students in the Documentary Media Studies graduate certificate program.

Limited and Selective Enrollment This is a one-year, full-time program; part-time study is not an option. Students are admitted in the fall semester only.

Required courses are offered only on campus in New York City; the elective course may be taken online if it is offered online.

This certificate is a condensed business education program for people working or planning to work on the management side of the communication industries, in areas including production management, technology development, marketing, consulting, and entrepreneurship.

Curriculum The certificate is awarded for the completion of four approved courses (12 credits) in the School of Media Studies’ Media Management curriculum and a professional synthesis paper that relates the courses to students’ career objectives.

The program can be completed within one year of full-time study (two academic terms), but it can be taken on a parttime basis.
