Another perk: “You can wrap the gift according to its shape, so you don’t need to go looking for extra boxes,” Sazaki says. Finally, a way to wrap footballs and other odd-shaped items! dig around your closets and look for napkins, scarves, sheets or handkerchiefs that can be repurposed. if it’s a square, it’s fair game for furoshiki. Sacramento-based family columnist Kelli Wheeler (@momservations) remembers being paranoid her kids would find the special wrapping paper she used for Santa gifts: “i hid the Santa bows so well i never found them again!” But if the kids catch you red-handed stuffing that stocking, Wheeler says you have to come clean: “He’s the spirit of the season, but you’ll still get Santa gifts.” “then empower them on it: You guys are the keepers of the secret and you have to help keep the spirit alive for other kids,” she says. then, there’s always the “gotta Believe to receive” policy. And we don’t mean by turning that section of the tree to the wall. like with most projects, you just need the right tool: the light Keeper pro, which can help diagnose and fix christmas light strands. modern mini-lights should stay lit even when one bulb burns out thanks to a shunt that keeps the electrical current flowing. But if the shunt doesn’t activate, the whole strand goes dark. to your dog or cat, holiday decorations are just new things to chew on. robert H. poppenga, a professor of veterinary toxicology with the uc davis School of veterinary medicine, says common holiday items that can be hazardous yet irresistible to pets include glass ornaments, poultry bones, and long, stringy things (like tinsel). the concern with these is cuts and intestinal blockages, so if your animal stops eating or isn’t passing stools in the hours or days following the incident, contact your vet. then there are toxic items, the most common of which is chocolate. Accord-

ing to poppenga, caffeine and theobromine are the dangerous ingredients in chocolate, so pay attention to the dose: A 70-pound lab that sneaks a milk chocolate Hershey Kiss may not warrant a trip to the vet, but a Yorkie who eats a bar of baker’s chocolate is in serious trouble.
