This stretch of rich riparian has some of the best winter birding in Bidwell Park. Common sightings include Black Phoebe, Hermit Thrush, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Spotted Towhee, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Acorn Woodpecker, and Bushtit. A$25 - Y$10 Level 3

9:00 am - 10:30 am Location: Chico Masonic Family Center When it rains, some of the rainwater soaks into the ground, while the rest runs off and flows into the storm drains and directly into Chico’s creeks. This is called stormwater runoff, which can contain pollutants, like motor oil and trash. In fact, stormwater runoff from roads, sidewalks, and landscaping is the single greatest source of water pollution. This workshop will discuss water-wise landscaping practices including rain gardens, bioswales, pervious pavers, and how to “Make Your Own Rain Barrel” (first 20 participants will receive a rain barrel). Participants may wish to take a field trip that compliments this workshop, Citizen Science: Water Quality on Saturday at 11am.

It’s All About Habitat –Field Trip included! NEW

Sat. 10:00 am - 11:00 am Location: Indian Fishery You can become a Junior Ranger by joining Ranger Zack Chambers for an exciting adventure on a short interpretive hike through the oak woodlands and riparian habitat at Indian Fishery.

Participants will explore the relationship between the meandering river system and the ox-bow lake located at the park unit. Junior Rangers receive a Junior Ranger Log Book, a sticker, and the opportunity to earn many other awards. The hike is geared for children 7–12 years old but families are encouraged to attend. We will photograph birds, particularly waterfowl, so come prepared with telephoto lenses but also have a wide angle lens available for scenic photographs. Then we’ll drive to the Howard Slough Unit of the Upper Butte Basin Wildlife area for a walk through various kinds of habitats.

Restoration of this area by the CCC is considered one of the finest wetland complexes in North America with a network of sloughs, channels and oak woodlands. In addition to the usual wetland waterfowl, we’ll look for riparian and woodland species, including raptors.

orthern California’s wetlands are a precious, yet scarce, resource. And while more than 95 percent of our wetlands have been lost, millions of waterfowl still make their home in the Central Valley. Ducks Unlimited works hand-in-hand with California rice growers to enhance and preserve habitat, keep rice farming viable and still meet waterfowl and human needs.

Ducks Unlimited is continually developing waterfowl-friendly land management practices and California’s Ricelands not only provide virtually all of America’s sushi rice, they contribute billions of dollars to our economy each year. As people benefit, so do the ducks – California rice fields provide 60 percent of the food needed by wintering waterfowl, while DU’s on-the-ground conservation work provides wetlands habitat ducks need to flourish here in the Valley.
