Puppies vs. sting A 20-minute Last Week Tonight with John Oliver clip lamenting the state of print journalism recently stirred buzz among my peers.

The industry’s problems, Oliver explained in it, are myriad: Staff cuts, shrinking revenue and circulation and, correspondingly, a push toward “digital-first” newsrooms.

“It’s clearly smart for newspapers to expand online,” Oliver said. “But the danger in doing that is to gravitate toward whatever gets the most clicks.”

In short, he added, that push can—and often does—lead to more cute puppy videos and fewer stinging exposes.

The segment touched a nerve.

During my career I’ve watched print ads nosedive and resources dwindle. In 2009, in fact, I was part of a mass layoff at The Sacramento Bee. It wasn’t the paper’s first cut, of course, and it certainly won’t be its last.

Recently, the Bee has tried to rebuild as a digital-first entity, with an emphasis on video in particular. Is it working? In July, McClatchy, the Bee’s parent company, reported a secondquarter net loss of $14.7 million, with ad revenue down 11 percent. Ouch.

Not to pick on the Bee, however.

Honest. SN&R and other alt-weeklies also face huge challenges. Smaller staffs, fewer ads and, always, the worry about content vs. pickup rates.

Cute puppy videos, we know, will always do well—but what about articles on government corruption, the homeless and the environment?

Not quite as exciting, sure, but so very necessary.

I have no answers, just a commitment to strong journalism and compelling stories, whatever the topic. I just hope our readers will continue to dig in deep with us.

As a recovered alcoholic, I don’t drink anymore; however, Hook & Ladder has a non-alcoholic coffee stout that is to die for. My favorite cocktail is the Laphroaig cocktail at the Shady Lady. It’s just such a different flavor, it’s an acquired taste, it takes a couple of times to get into it, but I just keep coming back. It’s a very smoky flavor, like it almost tastes like a campfire. Every sip is like an experience.

My favorite cocktail is a macho mojito. It’s basically your standard mojito with the addition of a man-made natural harvest. Man-made natural harvest is a natural protein, a boost, I guess you could call it. It’s refreshing, it’s delicious, it never gets old, I love it all the time and you can’t beat the protein you get out of it.

I like cranberry juice. And vodka. So, my favorite cocktail is a vodka cranberry.

I’ve had a lot of cocktails, but I really just like cranberry juice. And vodka, of course—the vodka is important. I drink it as much as possible and I like having fun—I play pool while drinking it. The vodka cranberry is all right with me.

Young and Hopeful IN LIGHT OF RECENT SHOOTINGS, BOYS & MEN OF COLOR SUMMIT LOOKS TO IMPROVE OUTCOMES FOR YOUTH

he tragic distrust between police and African Americans will linger until new ideas for mutual respect are found by today’s youth.

Until that day, Matthew will continue to fear police, or as he put it, “feel uneasy” around them, despite being a law-abiding citizen.

That prediction was made recently by Robert S. Nelsen, president of Sacramento State University, as he welcomed 150 young men to his campus for the annual Boys & Men of Color Summit held on July 21.

While the shootings weighed heavy over the summit, the main purpose was to motivate youth to succeed. Speakers, including Sacramento Vice Mayor Rick Jennings, urged the youngsters to avoid gangs, drugs, cigarettes and alcohol, and, of course, attend college.

Referencing the recent fatal shootings of African Americans in Minnesota and Louisiana, and the subsequent fatal shootings of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge by black gunmen, Nelsen addressed the young men ages 14 to 21 with hope.

“You’re the ones who are going to change [this situation]; it’s not going to be old … guys like me,” said Nelsen, 64. “You have to show us how to make America inclusive and human.”

Now in its fifth year, the Boys & Men of Color Summit is organized by a diverse group of young men with funding support from The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities initiative. Among the planners this year was Matthew Cornelius-Germany, an 18-year-old African American bound for Sacramento City College.

The power of education was another main theme. In his remarks, Nelsen emphasized that tomorrow’s leaders — those who will change society — must be college-educated. Workshops addressed issues such as teachers who set up students for failure, a subject that attendee Anthony Campi knew well.

“I pretty much agreed with what he said,” Matthew stated. “We [youth] need to find new, creative ways” to achieve peace between police and minorities.

“A history teacher at [a local middle school] told me I would end up a bum on the streets,” said Anthony, 15, now at McClatchy High School.

“She said I would never go to college.”

Anthony, a Latino, is on a mission to prove that since-fired teacher wrong.

“I believe I can follow my dreams,” Anthony said, adding the summit gave him a road map for the path to college.

And what was Matthew’s biggest takeaway from the summit? It may well have been this: “It’s good that … not everyone’s giving up on our youth,” he said.

Years after developer Paul Petrovich first drew up plans for a new Curtis Park neighborhood, the development remains unfinished - and the subject of debate.

Curtis Park Village was supposed to be a happy, safe haven with several hundred new homes, a Safeway, almost 1,000 parking spaces in front and a gas station.

But the proposed development has been stalled for months—years, really— as a wealthy developer and the local residents who oppose his gas station duke it out in court.

About eight months ago, after the Sacramento City Council blocked Paul Petrovich’s controversial Curtis Park Village project—later renamed Crocker Village—several months ago, from proceeding, Petrovich threatened to bring in a cheap discount grocery store, a nail | 08.11.16

salon and a pet supplies store.

A bluff? Possibly, and since no one budged, he took things up a notch and, in February, sued his opponents.

The story can easily be spun as one of a small, neighborly community being invaded by a belligerent developer who hopes to cash in at any cost—in this case, defiling their neighborhood with a shopping mall, a gas station and increased traffic. On the other hand, some residents say they look forward to the new development. They believe it will class the place up a bit, boost the economy and, possibly, even reduce congestion and traffic by providing the

community with a convenient one-stop shopping center.

The divisive element between the pros and the cons is, as it has been for many months, the gas station. Petrovich proposed it as a Safeway rewards gas station, where customers who buy groceries there would build up credit to use at the gas station.

Reportedly, Safeway has said it wouldn’t move into Petrovich’s envisioned commercial center when the city council rejected the conditional-use permit that would have allowed him to build the “fuel center.”

A representative from Safeway did not

return SN&R’s phone calls or emails to confirm.

And if Safeway doesn’t move in, a cascade of negative effects could follow.

“Safeway is not going to come without the gas station, and without the Safeway we won’t get the better co-tenant businesses,” said Bruce Strickley, a resident of the Curtis Park neighborhood, adjacent to the proposed building site.

In other words, the gas station was the linchpin of the whole community.

If the Safeway doesn’t take up residence in Crocker Village, a lower-end grocery store probably will—and it’s the dodgy co-tenant businesses that will come along with a low-end grocery store that are such a turnoff to residents like Strickley.

He worries that eliminating the gas station will indirectly lead to the presence of such places as a payday loan office, a laundromat and an auto parts shop.

On the other hand, a Safeway would mean upscale cafes, a nice restaurant, a gym and perhaps a bank, Strickley says.

“And we really need a one-stop shopping center around here,” said Strickley.

Strickley also believes the plan as Petrovich wants it would ease local traffic and congestion.

Petrovich first proposed his project more than a decade ago. Locals seemed more or less OK with the development, which Petrovich supposedly agreed to build in a style aesthetically similar to the historic architecture of Curtis Park.

The project description also included bike paths, plenty of green space and a pedestrian-friendly design.

Eric Johnson, a Curtis Park resident and president of the Sierra Curtis Neighborhood Association, told SN&R that he and other locals liked the plan, which would have been a welcome improvement to what had been for decades a derelict vacant lot. To mitigate any potential impacts of the project, Petrovich even helped pay for community improvements, like a pedestrian bridge leading over the train tracks to the light rail station. He also invested $50 million into cleaning up an old toxic dumping site at a defunct rail yard.

It looked like a good deal for everyone.

Then, in 2014, Petrovich sprang the idea of a fuel center. Local opponents, Johnson among them, went up in arms.

Community meeting halls were packed with angry residents (though some accounts report that there were plenty of supporters, too).

Residents of the area were concerned that the automobile-centric approach of the project would worsen traffic and create a net negative impact on locals’ health and safety.

The Sacramento Planning and Design Commission voted 8-3 in June 2015 to approve the project—gas station, parking lot, Safeway and all. Then, in November, the city council intervened and shot the plan down. The main problem remained the gas station. Today, the project has barely begun, with just a handful of the planned homes finished and occupied by new residents.

Petrovich’s lawsuit, which is still pending, specifically targets the city of Sacramento, the city council, the Sierra Curtis Neighborhood Association, Andrea Rosen and Johnson. The suit contends that the city led Petrovich on a 12-year process of meetings and formal deliberations, including a 2,000-page environmental impact report, before—without justification—turning at the last minute and rejecting the gas station, a core piece of his plan.

Linda Katehi is done as UC Davis chancellor—but she’s not going far.

On Tuesday, the UC Office of the President announced the resignation of the embattled uc Davis chancellor following a months-long investigation into questionable conduct—but Kathehi will still be on the ucD payroll.

On April 22 UC President Janet Napolitano suspended Katehi for 90 days while an outside firm investigated allegations of misspending student funds, nepotism and Katehi’s role in a strategy to drown out online criticism of the campus. According to Napolitano, the concluded investigation found “numerous instances” where Katehi “exercised poor judgment, and violated multiple university policies.”

“These past three months and the events leading up to them have been an unhappy chapter in the life of UC Davis,” Napolitano said in a statement. “I believe it is in the best interest of the campus, the Davis community and the University of California that we move forward.”

And yet, katehi will retain full-time employment as a member of the university’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as with the Interdisciplinary Program of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies.

In a statement, Katehi’s lawyer Melinda Guzman claimed her client had been vindicated by the investigation. “Today should end any speculation about what she has been alleged or rumored to have done,” Guzman said.

Meanwhile, Katehi released a five-page letter announcing her resignation and thanking the UCD community. She also lauded the “many accomplishments” the university made during her tenure.

The message came on the heels of a report documenting that the majority of Sacramento’s employees are white, while its highest-paid managers are overwhelmingly men.

Councilwoman Angelique Ashby also announced she’d be collecting additional data surrounding the lack of women in management positions, while Councilman Steve Hansen requested another report exploring whether Sacramento’s lgBt community is underrepresented inside City Hall.

Before the night was out, City Manager John Shirey was given a directive by council members to form an immediate action plan, with Councilman Larry Carr saying he would hold Shirey “accountable” if he fell short of a meaningful remedy.

When it was his turn to speak, Shirey acknowledged the city had grown “lazy” in its hiring and recruitment practices.

Throughout the night, speakers referenced a Time magazine article published in 2002 naming Sacramento the most diverse city in the nation. For Georgette Imura, who grew up in the city, the auditor’s report was proof Time’s declaration was celebrated too quickly.

“I was not shocked by the numbers contained in the report, but I am very disappointed we’re still talking about this in 2016,” Imura told the council. “Sacramento prides itself, and boasts often, about being the most diverse city in the United States. Sacramento city officials, developers, and tastemakers are still trying to cram an idea in our ears: “World-Class City.”

They love this term. It’s the barometer by which we are judged, with the implication being that we as a city fall below the bar. “World-Class City” as an objective means this: what you are now is unlike the best places to live in the world; we will make Sacramento like everywhere else.

The people who currently offer these ideas of a world-class Sacramento are not visionaries. So-called world class ideas are still code for the same thing: M-O-N-E-Y. For example, during her mayoral campaign run Angelique Ashby was a guest on the local podcast Serious Talk Seriously.

On it, she shared an anecdote about a visit to Seattle to gather homeless initiative intel. Her story devolved into a criticism of Sac city officials as wide-eyed worshipers of Seattle’s restaurants and lifestyle, quick to depict Sacramento as lesser. It all had very little to do with addressing homelessness.

This attitude resonates through the “big ideas” on the table for Sacramento 3.0. Each suggestion requires comparison: “A Walk of Stars—like Hollywood.” “A Jeff Koons outside the arena— like the Met.” “More high-rise housing downtown—like Austin.”

Worse yet, big ideas also come with even bigger entitlements and subsidies.

Excuse Amazon from $1.75 million in developer fees for a distribution center. Excuse Yamanee of developer fees required to build in Midtown and turn those fees into a $162,000 “endowment” for a vague “downtown activities” fund.

World-class cities pass revolutionary reform. World-class cities don’t imitate, they innovate. Identities are not cherry-picked from greener grass. Identities are inherent.

What if Sacramento considered the “world” in “world-class city” instead of emphasizing a perception of class, of status? You know, world class like the Dalai Llama, not perception of status like Kardashianism.

What if we led the world in taking care of all income classes, refugees and immigrants? We love to tote our “most diversity” label as an indicator of our progressiveness, so then let’s take in refugees. Come here, bring your people and diversify our neighborhoods.

Because those Paul McCartney and Sacramento Kings tickets aren’t going to cost enough, apparently, the city of Sacramento is now proposing a set of new, costlier event-parking zones to ring the new Golden 1 Center when it opens in October.

The proposal, which went before the city council’s law and legislation committee hearing on Tuesday, would allow the city to charge drivers higher, variable rates for metered parking in four separate blocks within a 12-block radius around the arena. This, factored in with the area’s extended meter hours, could make for some very spendy trips.

Journalist matthew Keys reported to prison last week after being convicted in a hacking case that’s raised many questions among tech security and intellectual-rights experts. Keys, who started his career at Sacramento’s FOX40 before working as a social media editor for Reuters, provided log-in credentials to Anonymous, which in turn used the information to change a headline on the Los Angeles Times website. The hack lasted 40 minutes before editors fixed it. Was Keys’ act unprofessional, immature and just plain stupid? Sure. Worth two years in prison? Hardly. BY JANELLE BITKER • janelleb@newsreview.com It’s nerve-racking preparing a cocktail for Charles Joly, known in the industry as one of the best bartenders in the world.

Sacramento bartender Baron Stelling came face-to-face with those nerves, and Joly, champion of the 2014 Diageo Reserve World Class, and about 5,500 onlookers at a national cocktail competition earlier this summer.

The cocktail in question was the Stag Savior, an original blend of Jägermeister, gin, absinthe, Angostura bitters, apricot liqueur, pomegranate grenadine and fresh lime juice. Stelling developed the recipe quite easily, actually, inspired by Jägermeister’s natural herbaceous and fruit notes. It got him through two qualifying rounds to the National Restaurant Association competition in Chicago, representing Northern California against five of the top bartenders in the country.

What did Joly think?

“He told me that if he was at a bar and drinking the drink, he would have happily finished it and gladly ordered another,” Stelling says. “Coming from somebody at that level who has been doing it so long, it’s the highest praise I can think of.”

The other judges agreed. Stelling won, earning the title of 2016’s Star of the Bar. The victory marks a rapid ascent for Stelling, who started professionally bartending three years ago. When he was 21 years old, he randomly picked up his first cocktail book and became obsessed.

“It’s almost like modern-day alchemy,” he says. “It’s a whole interesting world of how we perceive flavor and how presentation can influence how we taste something.”

But that was back in 2008, before Shady Lady Saloon opened and helped usher in Midtown’s now vibrant craft cocktail culture. So, cocktails became a hobby for Stelling. An intense hobby. He constantly threw questions at bartenders, such as Brad Peters, who eventually gave Stelling his first gig as a barback at Hock Farm. Quickly, he took over the patio 16 | SN&R | 08.11.16

bar, the Church Key, and became known around town for his tiki flair.

Now, you can find Stelling—and the Stag Savior—at Paragary’s. He also joined the Shady Lady team last fall, but he’ll maintain his Paragary’s loyalty when he participates in Sacramento Cocktail Week’s annual competition on Wednesday, August 17, at Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub. Last year, he and the Paragary’s team won first place at the speed competition, beating out heavyweights Bottle & Barlow, the Golden Bear and Shady Lady. The three-person teams must make six drinks as quickly and accurately as possible, and Stelling takes the planning and choreography seriously.

competitions—he has about a dozen under his belt in just three years— because it means he’ll meet fellow passionate bartenders and challenge his ordinarily cautious personality. All about that beef Lucca Restaurant & Bar

All around, Lucca’s happy hour is solid. What really sets it apart, though, is the food menu, with most snacks in the $3-$5 range. Considering the quality and the price, portions are generous. I couldn’t believe I felt reasonably stuffed after feasting on one beef meatball ($4.50), paired with creamy polenta, marinara and Parmesan. Or, go for the burger ($7), a pared down version of what usually sells for $14.95. Cheese?

Porky goodness Red Rabbit Kitchen & Bar

Remarkably, some of Red Rabbit’s most popular dishes are only served at happy hour. Maybe it’s because they just beg to be consumed with alcohol, and Red Rabbit is most famous for its skills with booze. Take the popcorn pork belly ($6): tempura-battered and deep-fried cubes of fatty pork belly, coated with cotija cheese and Sriracha. Pair them with street tacos ($2) filled with melty braised pork cheek, cheese and

At Centro, you can only get certain antojitos during happy hour, including huaraches ($5) and flautas ($5). Huaraches are oblong, chewy masa cakes, and here they’re topped with black beans, chicharron, salsa, cabbage, crema and cotija cheese. Sometimes a cheap beer isn’t the same if you’re not surrounded by a certain style of stickiness. Who wants to drink with folks who can afford cleanliness, anyway? Old Tavern’s it’s-an-actual-baroh-thank-God aesthetic wards off all sorts of decent people, leaving the rest of us to properly enjoy our $7 pitchers in peace. Of course, that’s a 24/7 thing at Old Tavern, but it’s still better than most happy hours. Other round-the-clock specials include $3.25 wells and Miller High Life for $1.75. With housemade rainforest quinine tonic, orange Sucanat and fresh citrus, this cocktail runs you $12.50 outside happy hour. For 55 years, the Firehouse didn’t bother with a happy hour. But the prized, historic dining destination added the offering about a year ago. You can’t hang out in the beautiful, ivyladen patio, but you can still enjoy the chandeliers and general ornateness from the bar. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., pair a martini ($6) or beer ($3) with a dozen oysters ($12) or elevated bar bites, such as truffle fries ($5) or smoked beef sliders ($6). Sunday afternoons can be a complicated time, emotionally speaking. The party part of the weekend is usually over. The chores are usually done. Time to just chill, right?

Strings Urban Kitchen This downtown Italian spot is located inside the Capitol Towers building, a high-rise apartment building that seems to be home to an overwhelming number of pretty young people, many of whom are on display on any given hot Sunday afternoon, sunning at the adjacent pool. As it turns out, the weekend happy hour here, which runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., makes for good people-watching sips and snacks. A ginormous glass of fruit-infused sangria (red or white) is only $4, or go for a specialty cocktail like the Ricky Ricardo (mint, vsimple syrup, Malibu rum, Absolut vodka and cucumber) for just $4. There’s a small wine list that tops out at $3.75 a glass. Strings also usually has a decent craft beer on tap—on a recent visit we enjoyed a Fieldworks Brewing Co. I.P.A. for $5. Bites are quotidian but they get the job done: A formaggio pizza ($5) is big enough for two to split and the aglio frites, crispy and coated with garlic, Italian seasoning and Parmesan cheese, make for a nice base for all those afternoon drinks.

The popular Midtown sushi spot is always busy—even on a lazy Sunday afternoon. So, word to the wise (and hungry), arrive before the doors open if you don’t want a half-hour (or longer) wait. Heads up, on Sundays, happy hour prices are good as long as the restaurant is open (5-10 p.m.). That means things could get dangerous with $1.99 sake bombs and $4 draft beers. The generous happy hour menu includes the refreshing Veggie No. 1 roll ($6), made up of asparagus, cucumber and avocado topped with spinach, and the Midtown roll ($8), a pankocrusted, fried spicy tuna and avocado roll that comes with both a Sriracha and sweet sauce. lec Good chose the very un-hip-hop-sounding name of Lake Natoma as the title for his upcoming mixtape. His reason: It’s a local hidden gem. The same could be said of his hip-hop crew Pocket Fixed Mob, a collective of some of Sacramento’s most talented yet relatively unknown rappers. And they’re young—all hovering around 20 years old.

“We’re doing something different,” Good says. “There’s a lot of gang rappers in Sacramento. We’re not just about hard bars and trying to sound cool. It’s from the heart.”

Pocket Fixed Mob’s hidden-gem status could change soon, as several in the nine-person crew have new releases scheduled in the next couple of months. Unlike hip-hop subgenres popular in Sacramento, such as gangster rap and horrorcore, these guys create left-of-center, innovative and personal hip-hop, in the vein of Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt and Chance the Rapper.

Think of them as Sacramento’s Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. Like the Los Angeles group, Pocket Fixed Mob is also a large collective of solo artists who mix street smarts, surreal beats and weird references with honest, often emotional lyrics.

“A lot of people are just saying something, just hiding what they’re going through,” says rapper Darin Steele. “We’ll put it to you on a plate.”

They started calling themselves the Pocket Fixed Mob in 2010: a group of high school kids from the Pocket-Greenhaven neighborhood who rode their fixie bikes around.

At the time, they were just friends, though some had already dabbled in music.

Of the nine members, six are rappers: Good, Steele, Wod Higgins, Moose Marlowe, Breon Hill and Lupe 94. The other three have different roles: Nico G is a producer, designer and manager; Adam Takeuchi also manages, produces and functions as the group’s accountant; and Jairus handles merchandising. Everyone works on their own projects, but they help each other whenever possible.

“We were a group before there was a label to it—we were just brothers,” Higgins says. “We all really heavily play a part in each other’s music because everyone gives each other momentum.”

Each individual rapper will perform at the Pocket Fixed Mob show Friday, August 12, at Sol Collective, which also kicks off a fertile period for the crew. Between then and the end of September, five rappers will put out mixtapes or EPs. The sixth, Lupe 94, has an EP planned for early 2017, but he’ll drop singles in the months leading up to it.

“It’s going to be a big splash, all of our fans coming together,” Marlowe says. “Someone might listen to my song, see that I have a song featuring Breon on it, and then start listening to him, and vice versa. That’s what gives us the most power.”

In the not-too-distant future, they plan to release an official Pocket Fixed Mob album. Now’s the time to see what each rapper brings to the table. Ω Check out the members of Pocket Fixed Mob at 6 p.m.

Good Problems II (September 23) Higgins, formerly known as Kahlil, is by far the most visible member of Pocket Fixed Mob. He just released a single with Mozzy called “Don’t Trust You,” which will be on Good Problems II. Higgins’ tall, skinny stature and weed-soaked flow brings to mind a tattoo-less Wiz Khalifa, but Higgins spits more contemplative thoughts over minimalist, airy beats. Earlier this year, he released The Tale of Wod Higgins, then went on tour with Pouya and the Suicide Boys, got home and recorded Good Problems II in a matter of weeks. www.whereiskahlil.com.

Sleepless in Sacramento (August 30) When Marlowe brags, it sounds more like he’s simply relaying obvious information. (“Won’t sign that deal unless it’s multimillion.”) He’s got a gentle, fearless face and delivers some clever wordplay, often mixing sincere, romantic gestures with raunch. Sleepless in Sacramento is filled with slow, funky jams and a nonchalant street vibe. It’s also a long time coming.

The Guru (September 11) “I know everybody loves me cause my shit is universal,” Hill says on The Guru. It sounds like a boast, but it speaks more to his quick wit and positive attitude. Lake Natoma (September 12) Apart from Higgins, Good is probably the most prolific member of the Pocket Fixed Mob. He released three mixtapes and three EPs in 2013 and 2014. He’s been less active the past couple of years due to some personal issues but is returning strong with Lake Natoma, an insightful and funny batch of tunes. (“I only fuck with bitches that do yoga, shop at Whole Foods.”) He stuffs his verses with whip-smart references and clever metaphors, relatable to anyone in the internet age. Starvin’ Artist (September 5) Though Steele only just started releasing his own stuff, his musical roots date back to childhood. He sang in his church’s choir, an influence apparent in his emotionally-stirring beats. Starvin’ Artist, meanwhile, addresses his own personal struggles, which he faces with a positive mindset. A little like Lily Like Lily Tomlin, Tom Schultz was born in 1939 and has a show in PAinTinGS Sacramento this month. He’s the artist and not the theme of his show, however. But Schultz has been at his craft for decades, too, like the celebrated actress. The Oakland-based painter combines hard edges, controlled drips and wide brushstrokes to create works with jolts of electricity coursed through them.

Gilding the Lily Tomlin Lily Tomlin was recently named to be the next recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. How appropriate, since she has been entertaining people as a comic, actress, writer and producer for decades. Plus, she was the GrouP SHoW voice of the fizzy-haired teacher on the animated Magic School Bus show, which is worth a lot of bonus points.

The septuagenarian is still at work in front of the camera in feature films and a Netflix series, Grace and Frankie, and Fe Gallery has chosen Tomlin as its muse for its current group show, The Lily Tomlin Experience. There are more than two-dozen artists who have gilded the Lily—both from Sacramento and out of state—including Susan Silvester, Madelyne Templeton, Skye Becker-Yamakawa, Rhonda Thomas-Urdang and Cuauhtemoc Q. Kish. There will be a video journal during the Second Saturday reception and a lot of love for Lily.

Charles Cunningham’s landscapes look familiar. The self-described “essentially self-taught” painter’s scenes are from vistas PAinTinGS he says he encountered in California and Nevada, and he often breaks the view up into thirds for his canvases, with blocks of vibrant hues in the foreground, midground and background, and often hilly or mountainous details marking the horizon.

wise inspirational-quote poster once told me, “Drink like no one’s watching.” Or maybe it was, “Live every week like it’s Cocktail Week”—my memory is a little fizzy.

Either way, sacramento Cocktail week is happening Sunday, August 14, through Friday, August 19, which means you can live those aphorisms and then some.

Because not only is it your civic duty to stimulate the local economy by investing in one of its most praiseworthy industries, but also, the masterminds behind the eighth annual celebration really stepped it up this year with a bunch of minutely detailed, kitschy events.

Behold, some of our top picks: Will Sacramento ever exhaust its love for The Big Lebowski? The answer is, “Shut the fuck up, Donny.” Kick things off with the Dude Imbibes at Bottle & Barlow (1120 R Street) on Sunday at 6 p.m. White Russians will abound, and go ahead and starch your finest bathrobe now, because there will be a costume contest.

There will also be a miniature bowling tournament!

The next evening, the tavern on the green is going down at Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co. (1630 S Street) at 6 p.m., where attendees will get to eat,

drink, play mini golf and compete in a hole-in-one contest. After that, head to the Red Rabbit (2718 J Street) for a Pop-up about Nothing, a Seinfeld-themed soirée. There will be drinks named after the characters, yada, yada, yada.

On Tuesday, August 16, it’ll be that much easier to convince yourself that dry Sacto heat is really a balmy tropical breeze if you come out to It takes two to tiki at 6 p.m., which is also at the Red Rabbit Kitchen and Bar. Next door on the next night, bartenders will be competing to see who can make the best 64-ounce fishbowl cocktail. Naturally, this biggeris-better, let’s-chug-64-ounces shindig is going down at Barwest (2724 J Street).

Bet that there’ll be some lively interactions going down by the end of the night!

Saddle up: After more than a year of anticipation, Saddle Rock opened last week.

The project comes from Chris Jarosz (Broderick Roadhouse, Localis), with chef Matt Masera (previously of Mother, Empress Tavern) at the helm. Named after one of Sacramento’s first known restaurants, Saddle Rock (1801 L Street) aims to celebrate local history.

The space didn’t dramatically change from its Capital Dime days, but there’s warmer, brighter lighting and a much hipper vibe. The bar is completely new, with rustic wood paneling that is matched by other new wooden accents throughout the restaurant. There’s also a new, plush lounge area, expanding the amount of space dedicated to bar patrons.

Now, what about the food?

In addition to the usual small plates, mains and desserts, there’s a raw bar and a daily selection of hot cakes ($9). It’s easy to see the historic influence in dishes such as pickled eggs with smashed peas and rye ($6); beef wellington with a poached egg and pickled onion ($26); and Hangtown fry ($18), the Gold Rush-era omelette. But there are some more eclectic surprises, too, like a wild rice cake with chicken salad, sorrel and celery ($9), or chop suey made with soba noodles ($16), which tie into California’s history in less obvious ways. Small plate prices range $6-$14, entrees $16-$27.

Cocktails seem particularly inventive, with many incorporating

Asian ingredients. The Cabrillo ($9) mixes rum, fig, Sichuan peppercorn, orgeat and absinthe, while the Dirty Means ($9) uses bourbon, leather, chocolate, Thai chili and peanut oil, for example.

For now, Saddle Rock is only open for dinner, but look for lunch and brunch in the future.

Zen tea: Around the corner from Saddle Rock, there’s an adorable little tea spot that quietly opened in June. BenBen’s Hidden Tea Room (1120 19th Street) sources its teas from the likes of Japan and India, plus additional ingredients for its special blends—created with health in mind—from local farms. A 16-ounce cup costs $2-$8.

It’s hard not to melt in the peaceful space, dotted with Zen decorations and various seating nooks for reading, playing quiet games, doodling on Buddha Boards or raking miniature Japanese gardens. From the outside, the location looks more like an apartment than a business, but you should see an A-frame on the sidewalk— noting free tea tastings, no less. Ω

We recently profiled frozen beer, jokingly riffing on the idea of alcoholic slushies. Real funny, considering that Zumapoke & Lush Ice in Davis sells honest-to-God alcoholic slushies: straw with a tiny spoon on the end and all. A sample of the Luau flavor ($7) displayed a pleasing blend of chipped ice, coconut, pineapple, nutmeg, orange-blossom water and soju. Want something even wackier wackier yet more delicious? Look for for long, slender witch finger finger grapes, also known as teardrops. They come in red and green, but the purplish variety is most striking. Ranging in size from pinkie finger to thumb, thumb, these hybridized grapes aren’t aren’t too sweet or tart. Before you start blabbering about how baked pork chops over spaghetti isn’t “authentic Chinese food,” I’m just going to tell you that you’re wrong.

It’s a very specific type of Chinese food: Hong Kong-style, in the vein of cha chaan tengs.

Sacramento already has two cha chaan tengs that specialize in saucy pasta bakes and other seemingly not-Chinese dishes: Yummy Cafe and Macau Cafe. Cellar Bistro joined these two Land Park restaurants about six months ago, bringing more visibility to the cuisine because of its location: Old Sacramento.

Look for the prominent sign hanging above the boardwalk and then descend underground.

The place can get packed on Sunday afternoons with Chinese families taking advantage of the restaurant’s bargain-priced set meals.

First, a little history: Cha chaan tengs began to take off after World War II, back when Hong Kong was still under British rule and all things Western were gaining popularity. These no-frills, affordable cafeterias offered unique dishes indicative of Hong Kong’s many international influences. Cha chaan tengs still exist in Hong Kong today, though they’re reportedly a dying breed. Luckily, more are actively opening in the United States Cellar Bistro serves nine variations on the Hong Kong-style baked dish, with various proteins baked over rice or spaghetti and covered in a creamy white or red sauce. And cheese. They also come with a simple tomato-vegetable soup, surprisingly tasty garlic bread and a beverage—the Hong Kong-style milk tea and lemon tea are both sweet and delicious—for $10-$11. It’s a crazy amount of food that can easily feed two.

Fair warning: the red sauce tastes like a

ketchup-heavy, sweet-and-sour sauce. Thickly glopped onto the other ingredients, you’ll probably either love it or hate it.

My favorite combination, the Portuguese chicken baked over spaghetti, actually didn’t carry the red or white sauce. And it’s not really Portuguese, rather, a Macanese yellow curry with coconut milk, potatoes and chunks of juicy chicken. It’s mildly spiced, but savory and comforting. You could order it over rice, but it tends to be a bit hard and undercooked. The spaghetti, meanwhile, arrives al dente.

In general, Cellar Bistro does noodles very well. There’s a huge selection of chow fun, egg noodle soups, instant noodles—again, a classic cha chaan teng offering—and even udon, only stir-fried instead of in a Japanese soup. The sizzling platter of udon with black pepper sauce, onions, scallions and tender slices of beef ($8) is excellent, as are the house pan-fried noodles ($9) with plump shrimp, barbecued pork, bok choy and just the right amount of gravy for flavor while still maintaining the crunch of the noodles.

Another eclectic offering is the Malaysian roti appetizer ($6), a hybrid of sorts between the traditional, Indian-influenced flatbread and a Chinese scallion pancake. Studded with green onions and served with a mild curry sauce, the roti is soft and pleasingly chewy with eight distinct layers.

The menu is so huge, I never got around to trying a few sections, including any of the Chinese-American standards.

Generally, dishes were at least solid and better than most Sacramento Chinese restaurants. One major miss, though, was the shrimp with egg flower sauce— like the soup, but condensed—over rice ($8), which severely lacked seasoning. And, again, the rice felt low in quality.

Servers aren’t particularly attentive, but they get the food out fast. The huge, cavernous space lacks atmosphere, with multiple flat-screen televisions blaring sports and old Chinese movies. Still, it’s a cool refuge on a hot day—and a nice change of pace from Sacramento’s most touristy district. Ω

More than 25,000 people are expected at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento’s 70th annual Japanese Food & Culture Bazaar from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Bazaar from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, August 13, and Sunday, August 14, at 2401 River2401 Riverside Boulevard. For a sense of scale, check out 1,500 these numbers: the festival will cook 1,500 chicken, 4,000 pounds of rice, 7,500 pounds of chicken, 4,000 shrimp and 500 pounds of beef, 500 pounds of shrimp and 500 pounds of noodles, aided by 100 gallons of soy sauce.

Nevermore, the play that chronicles the imaginary life and mysterious death of Edgar Allen Poe, with book, lyric and music by Jonathan Christensen, directed for the Green Valley Theatre by Christopher Cook, is original, exciting and, yes, weird.

Start with the beautiful set, designed by Christopher Cook. Green Valley is an intimate venue with a small stage, part of which is shared with the seven-piece orchestra, yet Cook has created a lush interior room with a beautiful stairway that immediately catches the eye. The set becomes several different venues with the addition of roll-on pieces.

Add the wonderful costumes by assistant director Meg Masterson and the play exhibits a look that could have been designed by Edward Gorey or Tim Burton.

Finally, add the creative puppets of Christopher Cook. There are “regular” puppets, imaginative shadow puppets and an unbelievable raven—all of which add another layer to this remarkable musical.

Ryan Blanning as the iconic American writer is outstanding, and he’s surrounded by 13 equally outstanding actors, all of whom play many roles.

None of them are actually identified by the roles they play but, rather, are collectively named “The Players.”

The score is dark, spooky and relentless, with sudden breaks for wonderful songs like Poe’s song of “The Raven.”

Unfortunately, the body mics used by the cast often muddled the sound so while there was no problem hearing any of the performers, understanding them, especially when singing as a chorus, too often proved difficult. Ω

4 Antony and Cleopatra Julius Caesar is dead, and the Roman Empire is ruled by a triumvirate: Octavius Caesar, Lepidus and Marc Antony. While the other two rule their regions, Antony neglects his duties (and his wife) to take up with Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt.

The scandalous affair between Antony and Cleopatra is given new life here. Ryan Snyder is assured in a role that requires him to be both warrior and hopelessly mesmerized lover, while Imani Mitchell captures the elements of Cleopatra as lover, leader and, when it’s called for, jealous schemer. There is palpable chemistry between the two actors.

Zachary Scovel is an aloof but assured Octavius; Michael O’Sullivan is Lepidus, whose fate at the hands of Octavius shows how ruthless a ruler can be. As Enobarbus, loyal friend of Marc Antony, Steven Campbell’s performance is often brilliant. The entire cast delivers perhaps the most naturally spoken Shakespearean dialogue as has been heard here.

This Big Idea Theatre production is an ingeniously and simply designed play. Its stage is defined by columns (with sheer panels attached) on moveable dollies with boxes as props. The set design is by Liz Hadden McGuire; the stunning lighting design is by director Benjamin T. Ismail.

It’s the costumes—credited to Mr. David—that are sometimes oddly distracting. For example, Antony’s and his men’s pants sag in the seat creating an unfortunate droopy drawers effect.

Magical fluff

Pete’s Dragon “As long as the dragon’s name isn’t Puff, we’re good.”

The Disney film brand has been mired in an existential identity crisis of late, obsessed with sequels and remakes but fixated on re-examining traditional roles and institutional values. This nod to political correctness is presumably well-intentioned but also weirdly noncommittal, and as numerous critics have pointed out, the latest Disney animated feature Zootopia is so vague in its predator-prey symbolism that it could be read as both a rebuke to racial prejudice and a backward validation of it.

All that self-conscious rebranding leaves little room for old-fashioned Disney magic, and up until this year, the studio’s spate of liveaction remakes of animated chestnuts has proved a dry well of pixie dust. Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent were unwatchable, and while the photorealistic technical achievements of Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book were dazzling enough to put the entire Disney catalog into play for remakes, the film lacked a certain innocence and heart.

That’s why it’s almost shocking that director and co-writer David Lowery’s heartfelt and genuinely magical Pete’s Dragon carries the Disney label. There is such a purity of vision to this thing, such a warm storybook vibe, and such a scarcity of the usual problems that befall contemporary family entertainment (e.g., unfocused narratives, self-aware cynicism, scatological humor, message-spewing didacticism), that it feels like the film was made in secret.

The success of Lowery’s remake is even more shocking in that Don Chaffey’s 1977 original is hardly

a beloved classic, and today plays as a largely lamentable and morally indefensible footnote in the Disney canon (at one point, Mickey Rooney chugs stolen beer while his onscreen daughter gets groped by drunks, enough said), with only trace amounts of Disney magic holding it together.

Lowery and co-screenwriter Toby Halbrooks move the action from a New England fishing town to a Pacific Northwest logging town (although the forest scenes were shot in New Zealand), and transform the orphan protagonist Pete (Oakes Fegley) from a fugitive boy slave into a wild child. The antagonists are loggers, but like everything else here, the eco messages are rendered with a refreshingly light touch.

Unfortunately, the human performances from Bryce Dallas Howard, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban and Robert Redford are forgettable (although after this film and Lamb, it wouldn’t shock me if child actress Oona Laurence is a household name someday), but Elliott the dragon is so magnificently realized that it hardly matters. Instead of scales, the dog-like Elliott is given plush doll fur, and while he’s more nimble in flight than his animated 1977 counterpart, his crash landings are still hilariously clumsy.

Pete’s Dragon is fluff, but it’s lovely fluff, with nonsyrupy emotional payoffs and a number of beautiful shots. There was little in Lowery’s interesting young career (he edited Upstream Color, produced Listen Up Philip and directed Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) to suggest that he could summon that old Disney magic, but Pete’s Dragon is his proof. Ω

There is such a purity of vision to this thing.

An amiable Bronx youth (Jesse Eisenberg) is transplanted to Hollywood to work for his superagent uncle (Steve Carell)— and promptly falls for the uncle’s secretary (Kristen Stewart) as she shows him around town. Set in the 1930s of Radio Days and Bullets Over Broadway, writer-director Woody Allen’s latest recalls both those classics—the nostalgia for a lost entertainment world, the titillation of gangland connections—as well as the rueful memory of lost love in his masterpiece Annie Hall. The movie is trifling, always promising to be better than it turns out, but it goes down easily, and the self-referential echoes evoke more pleasure than disappointment.

The stars blossom in Allen’s hands—Eisenberg may be the best Woody-clone yet, and Stewart has never been anywhere near this interesting before. J.L.

Captain Fantastic

A man raising his six kids in a rigorous existence in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest (Viggo Mortensen) ventures down to Arizona for the funeral of his wife, where his in-laws (Frank Langella, Ann Dowd) express their determination to sue for custody of the kids and raise them with the benefits of “civilization.” Writer-director Matt Ross draws good performances from all concerned (including George MacKay and Nicholas Hamilton as Mortensen’s two oldest sons), and he treats his story evenly without setting up cardboard heroes and villains. But the pacing is a little too even—plodding, in fact, and the movie peaks two or three times before the closing credits finally roll. In the final analysis, Ross gives us little reason to care what happens to this smug hippie and his half-savage, know-it-all brood. J.L.

Anthropoid

Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan star as resistance fighters who parachute into Occupied Czechoslovakia at the height of World War II with a mission to assassinate high-ranking Nazi General Reinhard Heydrich in the underwhelming Anthropoid (coincidentally, the upcoming HHhH, starring Mia Wasikowska and Rosamund Pike, covers the exact same ground). Based on the true story of Operation Anthropoid, this offering from director and cowriter Sean Ellis (Cashback) dishes out moldy drama leavened with thrilling action, although the war scenes unwittingly evoke the waris-hell bloodlust of the Inglourious Basterds movie-within-a-movie Nation’s Pride more than anything else. It’s all over the map—the first half of Anthropoid is almost unbearably stodgy and polite, and then suddenly everyone’s getting their limbs and faces graphically blown off. As for the performances, Dornan proves that his wooden performance in 50 Shades of Grey was no fluke, while the talented Murphy is trapped without a character. D.B.

Ghostbusters

Four women (Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones) join forces to fight a supernatural infestation plaguing New York. The 1984 blockbuster’s avid fans may bristle at the effrontery of remaking it (with women, no less), and they may not care to cut the new version any slack.

But the plain truth is—with all due respect to Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Rick Moranis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and director Harold Ramis—the original was popular beyond its merits. The new one is every bit as funny, and with a rather more engaging story (by Katie Dippold and director Paul Feig). Tributes to the first movie abound, and everyone but Moranis makes an appearance. (Even the late Ramis is paid a sweet tribute.) McCarthy and Wiig shine, of course; Jones, too, but McKinnon steals the picture. J.L.

A meek Staten Island teenager (Emma Roberts) impulsively joins an online game where players win cash for accepting dares; as the game progresses, the prizes get higher and the dares get more and more dangerous.

Jessica Sharzer’s script (adapted from Jeanne Ryan’s novel) grows necessarily more far-fetched by the minute, eventually climaxing in a lecture on the dangers of peer pressure that practically flashes “Author’s Message.” But directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman set a lively, suspenseful pace, aided

by Madeleine Gavin and Jeff McEvoy’s razor-sharp editing. The movie’s not-sosecret weapon is the sympathetic Roberts and her chemistry with costar Dave Franco as a fellow player. Emily Meade adds surprising depth to her role as Roberts’ BFF; other supports are good but tend to blur together. J.L.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

A problem boy in New Zealand’s foster child system (Julian Dennison) goes to live on a remote, hardscrabble farm with an older couple (Sam Neill, Rima Te Wiata). When the woman dies unexpectedly, the boy and his new “uncle” go for an extended trek in the dense bushlands, where they become unwitting fugitives from justice and the objects of an intense and thoroughly misguided “manhunt.”

Writer-director Taika Waititi adapts the late Barry Crump’s novel Wild Pork and Watercress, and the result (besides the improved title) is a quirky delight, filled with rough charm, surprising adventures, disarming humor and near-impenetrable New Zealand accents. Neill and Dennison form a solid bond of screen chemistry, and the supporting players are well cast, especially Rhys Darby as a character aptly named “Psycho Sam.” J.L.

Ice Age: Collision Course

The fifth installment in the worst animated-feature franchise in movie history continues the formula of its predecessors: celebrity voices (Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Queen Latifah, Adam Devine, Wanda Sykes, Jennifer Lopez, Simon Pegg, Seann William Scott, Jesse Tyler Ferguson), lame gags and frenetic movement, all in the service of a virtually nonexistent story—and the less sense it makes, the better. And once again, inserted at regular intervals are the thrashings of that annoying squirrel and his slippery acorn (inspired by Wile E. Coyote but entirely lacking the comic genius of Chuck Jones). This rendition, like all the ones before, is a harmless but worthless waste of time; reviewing it is as pointless as spending a restaurant column covering the opening of the latest McDonald’s. J.L.

Jason Bourne

Fugitive former spy Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is still scouring the world for clues to his true identity. Meanwhile, the CIA, with nothing else to do and showing a go-everywhere-and-see-everything efficiency that the agency only has in movies like this, plots to find and kill him. Director and co-writer (with Christopher Rouse) Paul Greengrass returns after a four-year hiatus in the Bourne franchise, which

was enough to coax Damon back as well. Following the convoluted story is getting to be more trouble than it’s worth, but Greengrass holds our interest with some high-adrenaline action scenes—including a climactic chase through Las Vegas that appears to kill bystanders by the hundreds (though not enough to jeopardize the PG-13 rating). Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassel co-star. J.L.

On the shelves of a supermarket, all the food items—frankfurters, buns, mustard jars, ketchup bottles, etc.—wait eagerly for the day they’ll be chosen by some shopper and transported to the “Great Beyond”—never suspecting that their true fate is to be chopped, cooked and eaten. Some of the jokes in the script are profanely funny (just imagine the double entendre possibilities of wieners sliding into buns) and the novelty of a raunchy adults-only cartoon has a naughty charge. That’s good for about 15 minutes, then all this food reaches its sell-by date and grows stale; the characters and story aren’t engaging enough to fill 89 minutes.

Seth Rogen co-writes and provides a star voice, with other voices by his usual gang of buddies: Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Michael Cera, Bill Hader, etc. J.L.

At this point, even the most die-hard comic book movie apologists would have to admit that the superhero genre is stuck in a rut. The genre demands reinvention, but for all of the chest-beating swagger and style of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, the needle hardly even flinches. A screenwriter turned director who excels at stories of violent group dynamics (Fury; Sabotage), Ayer probably squeezes the most disreputable fun into this PG-13 film as he was allowed. Yet all of the symptoms of the disease are still present: a surplus of origin stories, supervillains with nebulous motivations, and a choppy plot forced to serve too many masters.

Suicide Squad spreads so thin that it only makes time for one layer of character development, even for the characters we actually come to care about. There is so much universe-building and overexplaining that the movie frequently forgets to have any fun. D.B.

Unlike other forms of jazz, which can have a lot of chord changes and require a deep knowledge of many scales, Colborn argues that second line is musically simpler. It’s more about the performance.

Tech lands heavy bass and killer hooks. Just when you’d think she’d settled into a pop star role, she’d collapse and unleash a high-pitched, murderous scream, followed by metal-esque, possessed-sounding growls.

After watching Grimes move like a short-circuiting robot, a neighboring tween made an insightful evaluation: “Ew, Grimes is weird.” Then she left, probably to get in line for a ramenburger.

A more enthusiastic crowd formed Sunday afternoon for Dr. Teeth & the Electric Mayhem. Yes, that’s the Muppets house band. Yes, it’s hilarious that thousands of people gathered to essentially watch Muppets YouTube videos together.

Still, in a festival climate where every lineup starts to look the same, the Muppets proved to be a huge get for Outside Lands. This was the first and potentially only time Dr. Teeth & the Electric Mayhem played “live” for a real audience.

Other fun surprises: Third Eye Blind performed a David Bowie medley with a 30-person choir and 12-person orchestra; E-40 and Warren G gave an unannounced pop-up set on Saturday night; and a small brass band randomly marched second linestyle through the grounds on Friday afternoon.

Culinary attractions got ramped up even further this year. In addition to the aforementioned Cocktail Magic area, there was also a new, spacious cafe by Four Barrel; Outside Clams, a spot devoted to seafood such as oysters and lobster rolls; and an intimate, $175, four-course dining experience in the forest. Wine Lands offered its biggest selection yet— and doubled as a much-needed break from college kids who preferred soaking tampons in vodka.

The Barbary saw some of its longest, most dedicated lines ever, with folks queueing hours in advance with hopes of catching Portlandia star Fred Armisen in the comedy tent. Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney and Paul F. Tompkins, voice of Mr. Peanutbutter on BoJack Horseman, drew long, angry waits as well. Seriously, the Barbary could really use its own app or something.

Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem and more: Will 2016 be remembered as the year Outside Lands hit peak tech?

Probably not, but it did feel like the festival truly mirrored the controversial state of San Francisco.

Camp Grounded, the relaxing space where technology was ditched in favor of typewriters, face paint and tiny folk shows, was no more.

In its place, bartenders shook up craft cocktails while magicians blew drunk people’s minds with card tricks.

Those people also could only pay for their drinks via wristband, which could be loaded with denominations of $5 via long line or app.

The new payment system drove some attendees—and vendors— crazy, particularly when problems inevitably arose and everyone was briefly forced to barter in cash Friday evening. How archaic.

In bathroom lines, strangers struck up the prescribed conversation: “How could an app make this more efficient?” “Wouldn’t an app improve the lines at the comedy tent?” “How can my startup make Outside Lands really great?”

Meanwhile, a cool-looking, interactive-seeming, steampunk installation turned out to just be another place to download an app.

That all said, a sold-out crowd of 210,000 people didn’t flock to Golden Gate Park last weekend just for mini-golf paired with wine tasting.

The star attraction remains the music, with the highest anticipation this year reserved for Radiohead.

It was a special booking for Outside Lands, as Radiohead was the first band to ever play at night in its inaugural year. This time around, the band focused on its new record, A Moon Shaped Pool, and complemented those songs with other low-tempo tracks dating back to Kid A. All together, the set was more beautiful than epic, with moments so quiet you could hear a couple whispering across the field.

LCD Soundsystem’s headlining set on Friday delivered a disco ball and dance party for thousands of fans so relieved they didn’t miss out on seeing their favorite act live like they once thought. Before the set, the word “redemption” filled the air.

See also: an alternate soundtrack to It Follows, as Weirdo Shrine is inspired by Charles Burns’ “Black Hole” short story. I admit it. I used to love the Ataris. Blue Skies, Broken Hearts...Next 12 Exits? Oh, yes. Blame middle-school angst. Anyway, the Ataris never stopped making music— they’re on tour right now supporting a new EP, October in This Railroad Earth. It sounds straight out of the ’90s because it was written in the ’90s. Most of the six songs actually pre-date the first Ataris album, and they’re more gritty and punk than you ALT-RoCK might expect. Even more punk: the Ataris recorded tracks live, in one take, straight to analog tape. And the whole production process took a whopping four days.

Wasn’t the DEA supposed to have released its decision on rescheduling cannabis by now?

—John E. Law Of course it was, and of course it hasn’t. Word was that the Drug Enforcement Administration was in talks to bump cannabis to Schedule 2 within the first half of 2016. Do you know how hard it is for government agencies to admit they’ve made a mistake? Currently, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug, meaning it supposedly has no medicinal value and has a high risk for abuse. You know, like other Schedule I drugs such as heroin or LSD. If they decide to reschedule cannabis, what would they say to the thousands of people that have had their lives destroyed by the DEA’s overzealous pursuit of people that like weed? This is the same DEA that could have removed cannabis from Schedule 1 in 1988, but chose to reject the findings of its own judge when he stated, “Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically The DEA is active substances known to man. By any measure taking its sweet of rational analysis marijuana can be safely used time. within a supervised routine of medical care.”

All that aside, the DEA is taking its sweet time.

DEA spokesman Russ Baer recently told a reporter for TheCannabist.co: “I can’t give you a time frame as to when we may announce a decision. We’re closer than we were a month ago. It’s a very deliberate process.”

Here’s the deal: It’s not hard to do, but think about all the things the DEA and the feds would have to deal with if cannabis was descheduled. The DEA wouldn’t just be giving up the millions of dollars of its budget that it wastes each year going after pot users: They would have to drop a bunch of cases, give back a bunch of seized assets, deal with prisoners petitioning for release and more.

It’s a big deal. It is hard for people, especially bureaucrats, to willingly relinquish that type of power.

By the way, if you think the feds only go after big-time outlaw cannabis growers, I refer you to the case of Devontre Thomas, a 19-year-old native American kid from Oregon who faced a year in jail and loss of any potential federal subsidies, such as student loans, for being caught with less than one gram (Less than one gram.

Maybe enough for a decent sized joint!) of cannabis on federal property. It took a U.S. Congressman and a giant outcry by the public to get the feds to drop the charges. The war on drugs is a sham and the war on pot users is a travesty and a mockery. It’s time for it to end. I still hold out hope that President Barack Obama will use his executive powers to deschedule cannabis right before he leaves office, but I am not placing any bets.

ased out of Las Vegas, the Bhang Corporation is so widely associated with their chocolates that the URL listed on their vape cartridge packages directs people to “bhangchocolate.com.” We raved over the Bhang Cherry Milk Chocolate Bar earlier this year, so we can vouch for their affinity with candies, but Bhang also produces a line of vapes made from Co2-extracted cannabis oils.

Bhang brings the same standards of quality, purity and safety to their vapor products as they do to their chocolates.

Their cannabis oils are extracted using only carbon dioxide, so the final product is fully free of additives and toxic solvents. They produce over 60 revolving strains and post all of the potency information on the label.

The Bhang Stick (priced around $30) is their personal vaporizer product, and like a lot of vape pens, it’s designed for anonymity and discretion — even the logo is printed in black on the black exterior. It’s visually indistinguishable from almost every vape

pen of its kind, although the labeling is more pronounced on the USB charger, and it comes in a silver case with felt cut outs for the pen, charger and a cartridge.

The indica strain was on another level, offering a lighter and sweeter flavor with a delicious tropical finish.

We sampled two different Bhang vape strains, a hybrid and an indica, with both cartridges containing 275 mg of oil that tested at over 50 percent THC. The hybrid had a nice earthy dankness, and the pen hits clean and charges quickly. But the indica strain was on another level, offering a lighter and sweeter flavor with a delicious tropical finish.

Cocktail connoisseur Lucky writer Garrett McCord gets paid to dream up recipes and eat macaroni and cheese. If that isn’t enough to make you hate him, the local food author (formerly a freelance restaurant critic with SN&R) got liquored up in the best bars around Sacramento—for “research.” Now a DIY cocktail evangelist, McCord recently released an ebook, Stewards of Spirits, with recipes by Sacramento’s top bartenders. All proceeds from the book go to the local children’s nutrition nonprofit, the Food Literacy Center. Maybe we don’t hate him after all.

Let’s be honest. Did you write the book as an excuse to day-drink?

That just happened to be a side benefit. …

[The photographer Callista Polhemus and I] realized that this would be a great way not only to prop up the cocktail and bartender scene here in Sacramento, which kind of takes second fiddle to, you know, chefs …

The bars here are just as good, and they just don’t get that attention that the chefs in town get. … The day drinking was just a bonus.

I got to expand my writing skills in some new ways. And it was a chance to meet new people and get out and explore new parts of our own city of Sacramento.

Are we in a cocktail renaissance?

The thing is, I think it’s not so much a renaissance … we’re rediscovering something. Take Paragary’s, for instance,

they were doing sort of craft cocktails in the ’80s and ’90s when people were still slinging pre-bottled sweet-and-sour. It’s just that these days, more people are now actually paying attention.

In college, I did a bunch of stupid things … like lighting vodka or, like, high-proof corn whiskey on fire, and then you put a glass over it with a straw and you suck out the vapor and get high really fast.

Very quickly, in the past few months, I’ve become the person in my circle of friends who now makes the good cocktails.

Party at your house.

Oh, my God. Or Skittles vodka—but that was all college, so don’t judge me—which I ran through the Brita filter to make it better because it was bottom-shelf jugs.

What’s with all of the book’s pre-Prohibition drinks?

There was already a really big cocktail culture before Prohibition. It was only after Prohibition, during this long stretch when you couldn’t find anything, that we lost a lot of these great recipes. … So those we can, it’s these classics, it’s American history.

In America, pre-Prohibition, we were drinking lots and lots of apple brandies and Calvados and apple liqueurs because that’s how farmers simply used to use all their extra produce … And now today, no one drinks it, those types of drinks—shrubs and cobblers and flips. … So a lot of bartenders are looking back to old recipes to bring them back.

Why should we clumsy laypersons concoct these drinks at home?

When I tell people you need to know how to cook, I generally tell them you need to learn how to roast a chicken, how to make salad dressing and how to bake, like, a chocolate cake or make chocolate chip cookies. That way, you’ve got date night

Exactly. … We popped [Contessa cocktails] into flasks and took it to the Shakespeare festival, and it was wonderful. Paired well with fried chicken.

Do you believe in those pairings— like, how fine-tuned does that have to be?

You haven’t seen a lot of cocktail pairings for food just yet. Maybe that’s the next trend. There’s been plenty on beer and plenty on wine, but maybe it’s going to be cocktail pairings with food, which I think would be interesting because you have so much more control over the cocktail.

That’s so true! Why haven’t we thought of this?

We just did.

Will robot bartenders ever replace the human ones?

For all the obvious reasons, absolutely not.

Plus, we have to prevent the robot uprising. If we let them behind the bars, soon they’ll be taking our lives. Ω
