All Neighborhoods Deserve Safe Streets BY

O

ften the most dangerous neighborhoods to walk in, with fast moving traffic, poor lighting, unmarked bike lanes or unmaintained sidewalks, have one thing in common.

“We have mapped out where fatal collisions have happened in the last five years, and they predominantly happen in ... lower income communities and communities of color,” Kirin Kumar says, project manager of WALKSacramento.

Improving the walkability and safety of those neighborhoods has been one of the main goals of WALKSacramento, funded in part by The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities initiative. WALKSacramento holds walk audit trainings to get community stakeholders on the ground, looking for ways that improvements to infrastructure or policy and education tools could be used to make neighborhoods easier and safer to navigate.

Kendra Macias Reed, a recent participant in one of WALKSacramento’s walk audit trainings, says walk audits are an important tool for neighborhood activists to leverage power on local government and nonprofit organizations and make real improvements in their communities.

“To say, listen we are not just here talking about it, but we are actually conducting data-driven walk audits that show there is an issue,” Reed says.

Furthermore, Reed sees these efforts as a way to improve social inequities that have long impacted lower-income communities and communities of color.

“These social inequities reflect in the public health of the neighborhood,” Reed says. “If you can only afford to live in that neighborhood, and it’s designed with little open space, fast traffic and very little bike lanes, it’s not conducive to healthy living.”

During her walk audit training, Reed saw many semi-trucks on 65th Street turning onto 14th Avenue, a two-lane road that borders Hiram W. Johnson High School.

“It is very dangerous to have these huge truck loads carrying lumber, crossing right in front of a busy school intersection,” she says. Reed suggests city officials should work to encourage truck drivers to take the wider Power Inn Road on their way to the nearby lumber yard.

Knowing about specific transportation problems plaguing local communities is half the battle when fighting for community change, Kumar says.

“If folks know of a crosswalk that is really needed or have some horror stories about certain intersections ... those are great ways to engage with WALKSacramento,” Kumar says, adding that his organization can support any resident who wants to improve his or her neighborhood.

Like most, I was dismayed to learn that white power groups were planning to rally at the State Capitol on June 26.

And, like others, I watched via social media when chaos erupted as antifacists and other protesters charged at the hate groups.

If I’m being honest, my immediate kneejerk reaction was, ‘Great, shut it down.”

My second reaction, however, was “OK, no, this isn’t how it works.”

As deplorable as they are, the hate groups there had secured the required permits. Legally, they were protected by the First Amendment.

You know, the right to peacefully assemble, free speech and all that.

Those constitutional rights are fundamental to this country. Fundamental to human rights. When you try to take away someone’s right to free speech or assemble—or worse, physically attack someone for his or her views, you’re no better than the presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump who, on more than one occasion, seemingly incited violence at his rallies or threatened that as president he’d curtail the rights of the press because he doesn’t like the way it covers him. First the press and free speech, then what?

When you resort to restricting rights or violence to prevent another from expressing his or her views, you’re part of the problem.

I’ve read many reactions to the rally violence on Facebook and Twitter. Comments that justify the violence in the name of “running hate out out of town.”

No, that’s not how this works. Let’s not give into kneejerk reactions. We must always work to protect free speech, however detestable.

That’s how this democracy works.

Vote ’em out Re “Liberty for none” by Rachel Leibrock (SN&R Editor’s Note, June 26): This is what happens when an out-of-control political party gains control of the U.S. government. Following the Sandy Hook killings of 20 children and adults, Republican politicians did nothing. After the San Bernardino killings, Republican politicians who control Congress sat on their hands and did nothing, again, to deal with mass shootings in America. Republicans will not even initiate gun legislation to ban assault weapons. After the mass killing of 49 young people in Orlando, this same group of Republican politicians voted down four moderate gun measures.

Eighty-five to 90 percent of Americans now support some form of gun legislation, but Republicans continue to block all solutions to deal with the gun epidemic in America.

This is crazy; a few hundred “do-nothing” Republican politicians are infringing upon the safety of 310 million Americans. Can anything be done about this Republican cancer that has infected the U.S. government and country? Yes! Come November 8, vote these political bums out of office. Republican pols need to choose between guns and their jobs.

No info yet on whether these were one side, both or included law enforcement. With this kind of high-tension event, people should be allowed to peaceably gather, subject to the same kind of metal scanning as at presidential rallies. Guns and knives were banned when Trump spoke at the NRA convention. If it can be done there, it can be done anywhere.

Sad chickens Re “Eggs, explained” by Janelle Bitker (SN&R 15 Minutes, June 23): I was really surprised that this article did not cover how

any of the chickens are treated at the Vega family farm. Plus, nothing was said about when the chicks are separated from their mothers—the potential sadness of it also, for chicks have feelings too! The Sacramento News & Review should be held responsible for asking about how animals are treated. They are not placed on this earth for the use of humans in any way they want— as meat, as egg-producers, etc.

Mr. Ramsi Vega was quoted as saying, “It depends on what the customer wants. We do layers, we do meat birds, we do something in between. We do heat-resistant strains—my dad developed those lines.” Well, but how are the birds treated? How are the chicks treated? How are they transported? When are they separated from their mothers, is that humane? But those questions were never asked and that mentality in this day and age is unforgivable.

Sunday, bloody Sunday Multiple stabbings at Capitol clash between white-power groups and anti-facists leads to questions over police response STORY AND PHOTOS bY KriS HooKS

hundreds of anti-fascist protesters from all over California, many dressed in all black and wearing masks and bandannas to cover their faces, lined the sidewalks of L Street just in front of the Capitol Sunday morning chanting, “Nazi scum, off our streets.”

As the chants grew louder, dozens of Sacramento police officers decked out in riot gear marched across the street in front of the demonstrators. To the left of them, more officers on horseback followed.

The scene was just the precursor to the gruesome one that would follow: Bloodstained concrete on Capitol grounds following a brawl between members of various anti-fascist groups and the neo-Nazi organization Golden State Skinheads and white nationalist group the Traditionalist Worker Party.

By end of the rally, for which organizers had been issued permits by the California Highway Patrol despite the potential for unrest, officials reported that 10 people were injured, including five who were stabbed.

After, some witnesses complained of law enforcement’s response to the events, but the CHP says the injuries happened despite efforts to not allow contact between the factions.

“Typically we’d try to keep the two parties separate,” CHP officer George Grenada told SN&R, “but when the [TWP and GSS] showed up, the huge fight broke out.”

In anticipation, with the help of the Sacramento Police Department, more than 100 officers were ready on scene before the rally scheduled for noon. Officers in riot gear blocked off several streets surrounding the Capitol.

Others on bikes, which were used as blockades during the riot, stood on the Capitol lawn.

Despite the heavy police presence, however, some protesters, like Chadwick Anderson from Sacramento, said they noticed what appeared to be officers’ delayed response.

“It got chaotic, and the cops were right there letting it naturally happen,” Anderson said.

But Grenada said officers followed protocol and expects little to no change in allowing permits for similar events in the future, because the massive brawl was “inevitable,” given the two groups.

“Typically on a Sunday, we wouldn’t have that many officers in one place, so our officers acted accordingly,” he said.

The first incident of major violence erupted a little after 11:15 a.m. when a neo-Nazi walked into the crowd yelling, “white power.” Anderson said that man was attacked by protesters almost immediately.

“It was like, 30 or 40 vs. one,” Anderson told SN&R. “The cops just let it happen for a second, then they stepped in, the mace went off and everything just kind of dissipated.”

Less than 20 minutes later, all hell broke loose, Anderson said. The group of neo-Nazis came in from the east side of the Capitol bearing weapons and yelling. Then, more than 400 protesters quickly approached the small group of white supremacists. That’s when the stabbings began.

Shortly after, Anderson said two neo-Nazis stood on top of the Capitol steps with their arms in the air doing the Sieg Heil salute in front of the protesters.

Demonstrators threw rocks, sticks and pieces of cement from a broken ashtray at the men.

“The only two Nazi guys that I saw get hurt were the two [on the steps],” Anderson said. “They got booted a few times, then [the cops] took them into the glass entrance on the side of the building and held the two guys in there.”

As of press time, all injured people were reported to be in fair condition and expected to survive.

After all of the pandemonium settled down, TWP founding member Matthew Heimbach, who wasn’t at the rally, posted on the party’s website claiming victory.

“Our Golden State comrades in the Traditionalist Worker Party went up against over ten-to-one odds and won,” Heimbach wrote.

He added, “We delivered the message we intended to deliver today … Our event was a victory by all metrics. We won the physical fight. We provoked the leftists into showing their true colors.”

Some of the anti-fascist protesters disagreed. Yvette Felarca, an organizer with the Oakland chapter of By Any Means Necessary who was on-site and was also injured in the brawl, said that violence is necessary in stopping white supremacist organizations. Despite the injuries, most of which were suffered by the anti-fascist side, Felarca called the protest a success.

“We shut down the Nazis,” Felarca said, standing with gauze covering her head wound, “and in the end, [GSS] came out of this in worst shape than us. Not just physically, but politically.

They lost.”

Meanwhile, Mayor-elect Darrell Steinberg voiced dismay over the brawl on Twitter, stating, “Today our great & diverse city saw a melee of hatred that is antithetical to everything Sacramento stands for. #Sacramento” City Councilman Steve Hansen mirrored those sentiments, adding, “The violence at the Capitol today is appalling.

In the wake of union outcry and one day after an SN&R story (“Dysfuction junction” by Graham Womack, SN&R News, June 23, 2016), outgoing Sacramento Regional Transit District General Manager Mike Wiley moved up his retirement date nearly five months to August 1.

The district’s board of directors voted unanimously Monday to amend Wiley’s contract, which had him retiring December 31—as he’d announced last November. The board also voted to allow Henry Li, who takes over as general manager on July 1, to execute a personal services contract with Wiley for up to $25,000 to consult with rt and to serve as chair of the California Transit Association through November 2017.

According to an RT issue paper, Wiley would only bill the district while he serves on CTA for work that exclusively benefits the district. Li would determine when to call Wiley for consultations.

“I have no expectation, frankly, of doing work for RT beyond my retirement date,” Wiley said during the meeting.

Wiley had been slated to receive as much as $285,612 in retirement benefits annually. His decision to move up his retirement date will shave $6,730 from his annual pension.

Central Labor Council organizer Tamie Dramer would have liked to see that amount lowered even more, and noted the money for Wiley’s retirement will come from RT’s operating budget.

The outgoing GM had some supporters, including Mike Barnbaum of Ride Downtown 916. Noting Wiley started with RT on February 12, 1978, Barnbaum told the board, “in the words of Pat Benatar, ‘He’s a real tough cookie with a long history.’” (Graham Womack)

State lawmakers on Monday announced a bipartisan pact to reroute $2 billion from a 12-year-old tax on millionaires to reduce homelessness among the mentally ill population the tax was created to serve.

“Republican and Democrats alike recognize that finding permanent supportive housing for the chronically homeless suffering from mental illness will improve the quality of life in our communities and give hope to thousands of Californians currently living in despair across our state,” Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León, D-Los Angeles, said in a statement.

Two assembly bills make up the “no Place like home” initiative that its authors are calling landmark legislation. It will take funds generated by Proposition 63 and create shelter, housing and treatment programs for chronically homeless individuals with mental illness, including $10 million apiece for two specific subgroups of the homeless population—mentally ill veterans and youth. Assembly Republicans negotiated the carve outs, but also said they wanted more oversight over how the money will be spent, citing a 2013 state audit that found “that almost $7.4 billion” of Prop. 63 money “may not have been used appropriately and effectively to help treat the mentally ill,” a release from the Republican Assembly caucus states. The Little Hoover Commission also questioned the act’s effectiveness in January of last year, releasing a report that said the state could not “provide basic answers to basic questions” about the act’s benefits.

Voters approved Prop. 63, or the Mental Health Services Act, in 2004. Co-authored by sacramento mayor-elect darrell steinberg when he was an Assembly member, the act levied an income tax surcharge of 1 percent on every dollar over $1 million that California residents earned annually.

Musician-artist Christopher Fairman expected to have an “America”-themed show exhibited at 58 Degrees & Holding Co. during the month of July, but just three days after he hung more than a dozen paintings, the entire show was removed.

The dispute, Fairman says, centered on two paintings.

The show featured seven paintings of flags, including a large centerpiece depicting the American flag, as well as smaller ones featuring the peace flag and the pride flag. The other seven paintings featured a heart motif.

Fairman hung the show at the popular Midtown wine bar-bistro June 21, only to learn that the restaurant’s general manager later removed two of the paintings—the peace flag and the pride flag–without discussing it with him first.

Fairman says he believes both pieces were removed for what they represent.

“Apparently, [58 Degrees’] general manager felt they were either offensive or controversial,” Fairman wrote in a Facebook post.

Tyler Stacy, general manager at 58 Degrees and Holding, however, countered that claim, calling it “absolutely ridiculous.”

Fairman told SN&R he’d been working on the show for a few months and had informed management that the main part of the exhibit would center around the American flag.

He’d completed most of the show, including the peace flag, when the June 12 shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando inspired him to create another piece.

“Once the Orlando shootings happened, I made the pride flag, too,” he said. “I figured it was a good statement.”

Fairman said that Stacy was present when he hung the exhibit but gave no indication then that any of its pieces were problematic.

That’s why he was surprised to learn just two days later that the peace and pride paintings had been removed without explanation.

“He was there when I hung the paintings, and he didn’t say anything to me,” Fairman said of the encounter.

On Friday, Fairman removed the rest of the paintings in protest. Stacy was at the restaurant when he took down the pieces, he added, but didn’t say anything to him then, either.

After, Fairman posted a photo of the exhibit to his Facebook page, writing, “I felt that they were very poignant given the times we are living in.”

“It’s upsetting,” he told SN&R. “This doesn’t seem like something that should be happening in 2016 in Sacramento.”

Stacy, however, refuted the notion that the paintings’ removal had to do with anything but aesthetics.

The paintings that Fairman hung, he said, were the “opposite” of what had been agreed upon.

“I asked for no bright colors and every piece we got for it was that. None of them fit the aesthetic,” Stacy said.

“It’s completely unfair and absurd to say it was because of anything else,” he added, confirming that he didn’t speak to Fairman prior to the removal.

Fairman disputed Stacy’s reason. After news of the paintings’ removal went viral on social media, he said, Stacy called to explain.

Stacy apologized, Fairman said—but also gave a different reason for removing the paintings.

“He told me [58 Degrees] can’t have ‘political statements,’” Fairman said.

Stacy, meanwhile, maintains the decision resulted from a “misunderstanding,” and had nothing to do with politics or personal beliefs.

“His tribute pieces and their bright colors were a complete surprise to us, as they were not part of what we discussed he would be installing,” Stacy wrote in a follow-up email to SN&R. “As a consumer-based business, we … choose and strive to be as neutral, yet respectful, loving and inclusive as possible,” he added. “In no way were we taking a stance against any person’s individual identity and most certainly not the LGBT community as a whole. We take pride in our diverse staff and we always have and will continue to welcome all walks of life.”

Despite everything, Fairman says, he doesn’t blame the restaurant as a whole.

“I don’t want this to get blown out of proportion,” Fairman said. “I personally think this is just a single person with a very narrow mind.”

With the exhibit removed from 58 Degrees & Holding Co., Fairman said he hopes to find another place to hang his works.

In the meantime, Fairman says there’s been at least one positive outcome. After learning about the incident on Facebook, an art patron, who asked to remain anonymous, contacted Fairman and purchased both the peace and pride flag paintings.

That, along with the overwhelming support he says he received on social media, has been gratifying, Fairman said.

“It truly means a lot to me that my hometown stands up for me,” he said. “I love Sacramento because we have a real community.” Ω

New racism, same as the old?

Andy Noguchi draws a parallel between attitudes and actions of past and present by jeff vonkaenel

Andy Noguchi and I have something in common. Both our fathers served in the armed services during World War II. But there was one big difference. While my father’s family was delighted that he had a job and a steady paycheck, Noguchi’s father’s family was in a United States internment camp, for the crime of being Japanese. Despite having a German-sounding last name, my father’s patriotism was not questioned. Noguchi’s father’s was. My father was Caucasian.

Noguchi’s father was not.

At the annual Sacramento Area League of Associated Muslims’ iftar dinner, many community leaders gathered to share in the tradition of breaking the fast during the month of Ramadan.

Noguchi, who is the co-president of the Florin Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League, spoke about his father and the 120,000 innocent JapaneseAmericans who were imprisoned in February 1942 “behind barbed wire fences and armed guards for four years.”

He told us that the government “denied people of hard-earned jobs, farms, businesses and education. This experience burned deep in our hearts and will never be forgotten.”

And it hasn’t. The JACL has been very vocal in comparing the 2016 treatment of Muslims in America with their own experiences in 1942. That is one reason that SALAM awarded this year’s Distinguished Award for Exceptional Interfaith and Community Service to the JACL. Speaking alongside JACL Co-President Marielle Tsukamoto, Noguchi went on to say that “our Japanese-American elders told us that, ‘It’s happening again. They are blaming innocent people, like they blamed us.’”

He told the group gathered at the iftar that while his father’s family was locked up behind barbed wire, his father “risked his life, just as Muslim-American soldiers lay their lives on the line fighting for

America today.” He asked, “Should we be blaming them for terrorist attacks?

Should we be questioning the loyalties of the Muslim police, firefighters, teachers, doctors, scientists and all the everyday people contributing to our country?”

Just as my father had nothing to do with the Nazis, Noguchi’s father had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor.

Our Muslim friends and neighbors have nothing to do with 9/11. Yet the loyalty of German-Americans was questioned during World War I, the loyalty of Japanese-Americans was questioned during World War II and the loyalty of Muslim-Americans is being questioned today.

While 1942 was 74 years ago, sitting at the iftar dinner, it felt very current.

These events that took place three quarters of a century ago are still raw and painful. The Japanese community has not forgotten.

Nor should we. Noguchi said that only two major groups stood up for the Japanese during their internment: The Quakers and the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California. He was encouraged that today there are hundreds of groups standing up against bigotry and intolerance.

In 1980, 38 years after the internment, President Jimmy Carter appointed the Commission of Wartime Relocation and Internment, which found little evidence of Japanese disloyalty but much evidence of racism. It was racism against the Japanese that led to the internment camps. And today, it is religious prejudice that is driving the hate campaign against Muslims.

It is wrong and shameful. If we do not learn from the mistakes of history, we are doomed to repeat them. Ω

at a chic West Hollywood cafe, where the tables are evenly spaced and the dimly lit room reverberates with chatter. A waiter holds up a chalkboard with the day’s specials. Right on time, the maître d’ brings over a brunette and presents her to me as if she were a head of state.

“Hi, I’m Sasha,” she says, holding in her hand an iPhone wrapped in a blue rubber case that stands out against her gloomy outfit: a black, hooded wool coat (probably vintage) over a silky black dress that’s cut above the knees and falls elegantly on her 5-foot-6 frame.

I’m surprised she’s on time, 2:30 p.m. sharp.

Grey, who is inarguably most famous for having been one of the country’s biggest adult film stars, is big on punctuality.

“Nobody has any respect for tradition,” she says, describing how everyone in LA is fashionably late. “I’ve hosted dinners where people were two hours late and I kindly told them to turn their cars around.”

She coughs, sniffles, then takes out a tissue and wipes her nose. Sasha Grey, it would seem, has cold-like symptoms.

Grey may have a cold, but there’s something burning inside her that isn’t typical of a celebrity. Over the last few years, she’s quietly been taking on her next form, be it novelist, EDM deejay, Formula 1 racer or action star—no matter what it is, it’s more than “ex-porn star.”

But, first, back to the beginning.

What Would Legalization Look Like?

Medicinal cannabis professionals share thoughts on November ballot measure

ast April, The Motley Fool, a financial services company, issued a prediction that cannabis would become legal in California for three reasons. Firstly, there are more of those who want easier access to medicinal cannabis. Secondly there are more who want to use it recreationally and be legal about it. Thirdly, there are more local governments who want additional tax dollars to spend in their own communities. So with the prospect of a perfect storm of California voters legalizing cannabis by way of a November ballot initiative, many are wondering how the industry will be affected.

“Right now we don’t like the language as it is,” said Shayna Schonauer, manager at RCP Sacramento, of the current ballot initiatives. She agrees that some form of legalization is inevitable, but says dispensaries like RCP “want controlled regulations, for example, with edibles, especially as to what a single dose is.” Schonauer explained that varying claims of dosages on current edible products confuse customers because the suppliers don’t always agree on the amount of milligrams per dose.

Take, for example, Heavenly Sweet’s S’ mores Brownies from Two Rivers dispensary. They tested at 147 mg of THC, but their package label calls that “eight doses” (around 18 mg each). Some brands commonly fix a dose from 25-50 mg, so these s’mores, while very tasty, would only measure out at three to six doses by other brand standards.

Will Californians need a doctor to write prescriptions after legalization? If Colorado is any indicator, the answer is yes.

Katie Devoe agrees with Schonauer on standardization. The owner of Paradise Candy Company and CBDNATIONWIDE, a California edibles and CBD supplier, specifically wants serving sizes and recommended dosages applied to each label, in addition to other requirements.

While legalizing marijuana would open the doors to access and raising tax dollars for local jurisdictions, some say other measures, such as standardized dosing and testing, are needed to further legitimize the industry.

certain taxes don’t apply to their purchases. Assuming California does something similar, it could make sense for regular medicinal users to keep renewing that prescription. The medical cannabis industry will still need doctors, but the number might drop statewide.

As to whether other dispensaries will stop marketing medical cannabis and switch to recreational sales, “It’s a possibility,” said Schonauer. But she added that “for [RCP], our prime focus right now is providing people with the help they need.”

Once again, Devoe agreed. “We are here to empower the people to rely on the plant, not the pill,” she told Capital Cannabis Guide.

“It would help to legitimize the industry if we required all products to be lab tested by third party ISO labs,” Devoe said.

While she’s been living in Los Angeles for the past decade, Grey grew up in North Highlands. She doesn’t miss the doldrums of her hometown, except for the old Arco Arena, where she saw Prince when she was 15.

“I cried nonstop when he died,” she says.

She also misses her father, a GreekAmerican mechanic who died last year.

“He had a heart attack,” she says.

“Which was really weird because he had one when I was 13, and he had quit everything—smoking, drinking. It’s the most fucked-up thing in the grand scheme of things.”

While Grey doesn’t like to talk about her family—or personal life—she does like to share memories of her father, whose passing threw her into a deep depression.

Even though she’s famously guarded about her personal life—she says she’s had to falsify some stories in the press because of stalkers—Grey plans to allow me to peek behind the mask she often wears in public—or at least behind the tissue she’s currently using to flush out her sinuses.

Besides being irritating, the illness has hurt her ability to work or even open her already sleepy-looking eyes. She has, however, managed to pen her second erotic novel, a sequel to 2013’s The Juliette

“Somehow I loved it in the same way I love my mother’s perfume. On the weekends we’d often BBQ together. These combinations of smells are so ingrained in my memory, as is the smell of hot summer nights.”

Her connection to her father, a mechanic who surfed and drank beer with his dog, manifests itself regularly. She barbecues often at her house in Hollywood, which is also home to her two most prized possessions, an adopted Doberman pinscher named MacReady (after Kurt Russell’s character in The Thing), and her dream car, a pimped-out Cadillac Coupe DeVille.

At lunch she stabs a cold shrimp with her fork and tells me she’s been sick off and on for two years.

“I’m just relieved I know what’s wrong with me now,” she adds.

She’s been diagnosed with a chronic sinus inflammation that causes fatigue and head pains. Grey, who jokingly says she has a heightened sense of smell and can “tell when a bitch is bleeding,” is

“It’s like classic erotica,” she says. “I based her sexual awakening on me, but it’s also a commentary on society and pop culture, a meditation on female sexuality.”

She finished the first installment of The Juliette Society during a 2013 visit to Paris, which she describes as the first time she was able to “vanish in a city” that wasn’t hers. In the book, there’s an entire chapter about cum, which one editor found to be “too misogynistic.” Grey, a tomboy whose mind naturally tends toward the masculine, rewrote the chapter from the perspective of one of her girlfriends.

“Everyone liked it,” she says.

Which leads me to ask her about the recent movement to desexualize the female body, and how puritanical ideals are censoring both the body and free speech.

“Nobody can talk about anything anymore,” she says. “We’re breeding this culture where people hypersexualize themselves, but they’re so scared and ignorant about sex.”

She’s also tired of the media.

“I can’t even read some of this shit anymore,” she says, referring to articles that seem to be criminalizing the nipple or perpetuating a society of victims, which Grey has never been. She’s always been in control, which is defiantly feminist. And while Sasha has never been a stripper, she doesn’t see it as “objectification,” either.

“It’s an antiquated idea that strip clubs are objectifying women,” she tells me.

“Little do people know that most of those women are lesbian and could give a shit what anyone thinks.”

Grey’s currently editing the second book in her erotic trilogy, to be released by Cleis Press; the original was released by Grand Central Publishing, which used to be Warner Books, the imprint that released Madonna’s Sex book in 1992. The two women are similar: Both grew up workingclass and Catholic, and managed to turn their lives (and bodies) into living works of art that immolated puritanical thinking. Like Lou Andreas-Salomé before them, Grey and Madonna promoted sexual liberation in the face of resistance from both sexes.

When I ask Grey if she ever thinks about her cultural impact, she replies: “To see some of my choices reflected in the culture around me was really mind-bending. As far as a legacy, this was something that was hard for me to judge or realize until 2013, when I was on tour most of the year,” she says. “From Brazil to Russia I met young people that I inspired to take chances and understand their own worth; it was the first time I felt like I had a responsibility to my audience.’”

Like the pop star who once aimed to “rule the world,� Grey also likes to be in complete control of her image, which she says has often been mishandled by others.

For example, she manicures her own eyebrows, which aren’t modeled after anyone’s. “I’ve had bad luck going to salons, so I usually do them myself,� she says. “I’ve always liked Lauren Bacall’s and Sophia Loren’s eyebrows.�

She brews her own coffee at home, practically refusing to go to Starbucks. She does her own nails, or if she has them done, she takes her own colors and never gets fake nails. She likes to DJ because “I like to be in control,� she says.

She’s also interested in doing a one-woman stage show over which she’d have complete creative responsibility.

In social settings, she uses her eyes to assert her control: “I have this stare that makes people feel as equally as uncomfortable as they’re making me.�

It’s how she deflects men who might see her as a sex object. Grey currently has a boyfriend, and even though she won’t talk about their relationship, it’s clear that she’s in the driver’s seat.

As we rumble down Sunset Boulevard in an oil-burning monstrosity she describes lovingly as her “beast,� Sasha is at her most Zen-like, in control of her destiny, as she sings along to Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.�

Her size-9 feet, tucked firmly into a pair of new Converse, press down on the gas with the command of a drag racer or a dominatrix urging her subject to go harder.

Then, when I show her something on my phone, she slams on the brakes and pulls over. “What the fuck? I would not put that out,� she says, looking somewhat shocked at a book on Amazon I recently ordered titled Short and Sexy Stories: A Compilation of Naughty Adult Stories of Extreme Satisfaction by Sasha Grey.

Except it’s not by Grey. She never even knew the e-book existed. “This is not me, No way.�

The book features porny short stories with titles like “The Military and Their Privates,� so I’d questioned its authenticity from the start.

But how does someone so aware of her online presence miss something like this?

While using Grey’s name to sell a book is both unethical and cheap, there’s an entire industry of “hipster erotica� based on Grey, who acted in porn from 2006 to 2011 before retiring. It’s part of the “Sasha Grey-ization� of modern sexuality, which began with Grey documenting her life in porn and then commodifying it. Her brand’s influence is widespread. There are entire book series inspired by “hipster porn�—which Grey inadvertently popularized—such as The Complete Hipster Gangbangs by Hannah Wilde. There are too many Sasha Grey clones to name.

Even if she doesn’t get credit, she’s also

helped usher in the wave of BDSM-positive books and films, like that Fifty Shades of Grey franchise.

As the sun comes down, Grey and I are on the rooftop of an ultraswanky hotel in Hollywood overlooking the hills. “There are few places in LA that are truly classy and old-school,� she says.

I order an overpriced Moscow mule, which I hope demonstrates class. I also tell her that my grandmother was Russian, which leads us to talk about Russia, a country she explored extensively in 2013 when she was invited to take part in a Drom.ru promotional drive from the city of Vladivostok to Moscow. “I have a cult fan following in Russia,� she says. “It’s strange. I never expected that.�

Like the Iranian gays who adore her (look at her Instagram for evidence), the Russians, perhaps because of her Eastern European first name (which is a pseudonym based on Sascha Konietzko of industrial band KMFDM), or maybe Russia’s desperate need for sexual liberation, Grey is big in Russia the way Madonna was big in Japan. “I think there’s gonna be a huge revolution there in the next 20 to 30 years,� says Grey, who was given tours of the country that included access to secret private clubs, which she compared to LA’s exclusive Soho House.

This ties into her book, The Juliette Society, which is about a film student who infiltrates a secret sex society. It released in Russia just last year (two years after it came out in the States), a month after a photo of her was used by VKontakte, a Russian social network, in a propaganda campaign to vilify pro-Ukrainian forces accused of brutally murdering a volunteer nurse. The story went viral and Grey became the unwilling face of an apparent anti-Kiev propaganda campaign.

Grey addressed the campaign in a tweet. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I <3 my Russian fans, but this propaganda takes it too far,â&#x20AC;? Grey posted after discovering the VKontakte post.

Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now blowing off Hollywood roles that portray her as a mindless sex kitten. Still, like Bernardine Dohrn or Lydia Lunch, Grey probably wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop leveraging her sex appeal to manipulate doggish men or members of the media, the same way men continue to use power to manipulate young women. It is and always has been the natural order of things, but whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s intriguing about her is how sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already preparing to make her intellect her primary weapon as her youth inevitably fades. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I live in LA and I am a woman in the public eye, so of course beauty, ageism, death, etc., are always present in my mind,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;However, I hope they never dictate my happiness, as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all an illusion anyway.â&#x20AC;? A ROOM OF HER OWN With an eye to flow and color, artist Nichole Lauren Fry paints to complement a space, not overpower it

Nichole Lauren Fry never planned on becoming an artist.

While the Sacramento-based oil painter did study art in high school and, briefly, in college—she ultimately decided to stop taking classes.

Why? Simply put, she couldn’t draw.

A love of decorating and interior design, however, eventually led her back to painting.

It started in 2007 when she moved in with her boyfriend. His house had a lot of bare walls. Walls just asking to be covered with something—anything.

One of Fry’s friends had also recently bought a house and had done some paintings to decorate the new space. She suggested Fry give it a whirl herself.

So, she did just that. But the first painting—“Espresso and Chocolate”—well, her boyfriend stuck it in a closet.

“He said, ‘This is horrible,’” Fry remembers now.

She was undeterred by his criticism, however.

Instead, Fry undertook a second painting, this one intended for the fireplace mantel. This time she was satisfied with the results and kept painting. (“Every room was blank,” Fry says.) Others liked her works, too—to the point that they encouraged her to pursue gallery shows. Fry followed their advice, and by 2008 was showing her work during Second Saturday events.

Now, Fry looks back on those early paintings with a disconcerted eye: Her mom still has four of those older works hanging in her home, much to her chagrin.

“I’m sure those paintings were horrible when I first did those shows,” she says.

Perhaps. Fry’s more recent works are worthy of decorating any space. Her paintings seem to be possessed by a mysterious sense of movement. Pieces such as “Echo Lake” reflect an almost melting, ethereal blue, watery quality—an image in the distance perhaps being washed away in the rain. In contrast, a piece such as “Cadence” appears as a fiery explosion and expression in red, calling to mind a struggling heartbeat.

It took several years to get to this place of creative realization.

A few years after she started painting, Fry took a job bartending, but still kept busy with commission work. Exhibitions, however, took a back seat until 2014 when Fry finally put down the cocktail shakers to paint full time.

Since then she’s worked steadily, something she credits to a near sell-out exhibition at the Tim Collom Gallery in 2014.

Amber Massey, director at the Tim Collom Gallery, calls Fry one of the “most humble and prolific young artists” she’s worked with in awhile.

“Nichole’s paintings are reminders of abstract expressionism with her largest influence being Mark Rothko,” Massey says. “She explores the connection of color with our deep-set emotional responses. Her paintings also play into the human nature of creating a literal out of the figurative.”

Fry’s “Wheatland” does just this, she adds by way of example, capturing the motion, colors and swaying of a luscious field of wheat.”

By creating added textures with a palette knife, impasto and reflections from metallic oil paints, Fry’s work “creates the illusion of horizons and shorelines,” Massey explains.

“All of these aspects, plus [her] aesthetic eye … helps viewers make a personal connection,” Massey says.

That aesthetic makes sense if one traces the story back to a pivotal moment in Fry’s childhood. When she was 12, she visited the an art museum in Washington, D.C., with her father. It was there that she first discovered Rothko’s work, buying a poster depicting one of the abstract expressionist’s paintings.

“He’s just so simple,” Fry says of his work. “He just stood out to me, and always has.”

Specifically, she says, she’s been influenced by Rothko’s use of horizon lines.

“I do [those lines] in a lot of the paintings,” Fry says.

“I try to get away from it, and then I sometimes can’t.”

Fry’s love of art predates Rothko, of course. As a kid she liked to paint her room and decorate her walls, always working to change the design of a room, sometimes to the point of plastering the walls with magazine ads.

She would doodle, too, but painting as a fine-art medium wasn’t really something she thought about.

“I used to just do these things, I would do shapes and sketches,” Fry says.

Although she no longer puts magazine ads up on the wall, Fry says she still works with the intent to decorate a room.

“I just wanted to find something that can accent the interior … rather than take it away,” she says.

When she started, Fry worked with acrylics, but found herself always adding water.

Eventually, she was drawn to the colors that oil produced.

Unlike acrylic paint, oil takes longer to dry. which allows Fry to spend multiple days working on one piece.

“The way the colors came out, it just kind of flows a lot better for me on the brush,” she says.

Flow is important. Fry says she tries to stand by the way color moves in her work, looking at what the painting can bring to the room or the show so that everything works together. A lot of times she starts with three or four colors; blending them on the canvas.

Likewise, when she’s working on a commission piece, Fry likes to takes stock of the room or space before she starts painting. This gives her an idea about size, color and other elements—the room’s wood pieces, fabrics, etc—and helps shape her painting into something that accents the area instead of overpowering it.

“I have a hard time when you walk into a room and it’s like this screaming, loud painting,” Fry says.

Instead, she says she wants her art to work within a room, acting like another decoration.

“That’s what I did when I started painting,” Fry says.

“I just wanted it to bring the house together, rather than throwing a mirror on the wall.” Ω

Queerness and weirdness Burger Boogaloo, an annual music festival sponsored by the Fullerton-based cassette label Burger Records, is a bubble gum pop, candy-colored carnival, but on Sunday, the second day of the event at Oakland’s Mosswood Park, darker events threatened to intrude.

The sun shone bright at the crack of noon, when the poontang wranglers, a dozen union-suit clad musicians, featuring members of legendary surf band the Phantom Surfers and legendary punk band Crime, kicked things off by loosely riffing through old-timey jams on instruments.

Throughout the day, the presence of two stages made the festival go remarkably smooth, with all sets starting and ending on time—although the lines to get into the festival on the first day reportedly stretched well past an hour.

Other things that went smoothly: no lines for food or drink and plenty of merch and vintage clothes to peruse. even the portable potties seemed fresh.

Host John waters made his first appearance of the day to introduce the Soda Boys, in the process deeming Oakland “the Baltimore of the Bay Area.”

Later, as self-proclaimed “rock legends” the Dwarves plodded through their heavy set, I lounged on a blanket in the shade and scrolled through my Instagram, only to note in horror that Miley cyrus had just posted something about a Nazi rally in Sacramento that had resulted in five stabbings.

Soon, my social media feed was taken over by photos of bloodied skinheads. What a relief, then, to see a lighter post from performance artist Hailey Chase, known as MOM and formerly of Sacramento, who was at that very moment performing burlesque in a tent not even 30 feet from my head.

I rushed over and paid my two bucks to witness a loose resurrection of San Francisco’s legendarily debauched Stinky’s Peepshow, and was treated to a bacchanalia of female flesh, clad in pasties and fishnets entertaining a hooting, smiling crowd.

One notable aspect was the festival’s air of body positivity.

Ladies of size ruled the day, sometimes clad in not much more than a few sequins and some netting.

The backing dancers for Sunday headliner Seth Bogart of Hunx and his Punx fit that bill. After he writhed around in red fishnet outfits, Bogart continued the campy fun by provoking his two stone-faced male “security guards” into ripping off their clothing and dancing clad only in tattoos and bikini briefs. As he sang his ballad “Lubed” and anointed them with lubrication like some kind of alternate universe archbishop with holy water, I couldn’t help thinking of Orlando and the massacre at the Pulse nightclub, and how vulnerable we all could be, dancing outside in this fishbowl of an amphitheater.

It wasn’t just me; later in the set, Bogart drew this comparison explicitly, dedicating his performance to those who died at Pulse. So, here we were all together, during S.F.’s Pride weekend, celebrating queerness and weirdness and otherness, rejecting the fear and hate that seems to have an increasing grip on everyone lately. As John Waters remarked in his introduction of Bogart, and his observation of Burger Boogaloo as a whole, “You all are quite a tribe.”

Cider time

Thanks, Two Rivers: If you’re a cider fan, you’re probably frustrated that there isn’t a cidery you can visit to geek out over your favorite alcoholic beverage. Beer drinkers have tons of breweries in town. Wine enthusiasts have wine country.

Good news: Two Rivers Cider Co. understands your plight and, finally, is opening a tasting room.

On Thursday, June 30, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., celebrate both the tasting room’s launch and the company’s 20th anniversary.

The space at 4311 Attawa Avenue, Suite 103, is a similar size to the original Track 7 Brewing Co.’s location in Curtis Park—pre-expansion into the neighboring warehouse. At the party, Two Rivers will serve a few specialty ciders inside, plus its

usual lineup in the more expansive outdoor area. Alex Haarmeyer, part of the Two Rivers production crew, said they’ll probably offer a cherry cider, a cider made with four apple varieties and, potentially, some barrel-aged ciders.

Haarmeyer said the Two Rivers team hasn’t decided what the taproom’s hours will be postlaunch, but he guesses it’ll open around 4 p.m. at a maximum of four days per week.

Crab, oysters and lobster: Another seafood-focused restaurant has landed on the grid, but there’s nothing else quite like it downtown.

Station 16 (1118 16th Street) is softly open in the former Sapporo Grill space, specializing in crab

and other shellfish. It comes from chef-owner Minnie Nguyen, who also operates south Sacramento’s Firehouse Crawfish, an Asian-Cajun seafood boil spot. Station 16’s concept is pretty different, though, focusing on the seafood of your choice—mild or spicy—prepared and served in a cast-iron skillet.

There’s also an oyster bar, cioppino, clam chowder, lobster rolls and lobster mac ‘n’ cheese. For the oceanaverse, there’s a rib-eye steak, fries with Korean short rib and a burger.

But really, it’s about the shellfish here.

Nguyen is aiming the price point at $12-$20 per person.

For now, Station 16 is open for dinner, with lunch and brunch still to come.

The name—and the prominent use of red in the modern interior— stems from Nguyen’s husband’s participation in the fire academy.

Back when he was enrolled, she was searching for a name for her first restaurant, Firehouse Crawfish, which opened in 2011. She kept with the fire theme with “station” and “16” for its location. Ω

Every year, state brewers submit their best beers for professional judgment via the California State Fair. This year, multiple Sacramento breweries received honors, including Yolo Brewing Co. The West Sacramento-based brewery’s Nutty Brown took first place in the English brown ale category, and deservedly so. In 1940, thousands of Sacramento’s Japanese residents were forced into internment camps, and what was once the fourth-largest Japantown in the state began to wither away.

Today, Sakura Gifts and Osaka-Ya remain visible reminders of what Sacramento’s Japanese community lost. But, perhaps, the neighborhood will experience a renaissance fueled by efforts from local Japanese-Americans, such as Craig Takehara and Tokiko Sawada.

In March, the husband-wife duo opened Binchoyaki in the space formerly occupied by Doughbot. It’s the truest izakaya-style restaurant in Sacramento—lively and unique, with an appreciated mix of tradition and innovation. Multigenerational Japanese families fill up the small space on a nightly basis.

“Bincho” refers to charcoal and “yaki” means grilled in Japanese. The owners import binchotan charcoal from Japan for their open-flame grill, which sits prominently near the restaurant’s center. The best seats in the house are at the bar, with a clear view of the action. Once seated, you’ll get three menus: one for plates from the kitchen, one for skewers from the grill and one for drinks. There’s Japanese beer, sake and shochu.

All of the grilled items I tried were expertly cooked, with the tare sauce adding a nice sweetness but not overpowering the natural flavors of the meat—or the charcoal. Of particular note: the rich and juicy duck, dotted with sharp wasabi cream ($6); the medium-rare salmon loaded with salty salmon eggs ($6); the saba with shatteringly crispy, smoky skin ($7); and the yakionigiri ($1.50), a triangle of rice with delightfully crunchy and flavorful edges.

If you’re blindly ordering a full meal of single skewers, it is possible to wind up with an alarmingly high bill. But, that’s easy to avoid if you smartly choose a mix of grilled and larger items— and yakionigiri for all—off the other menu. For example, there’s a big bowl of light, clean shio ramen ($8), an exercise in restraint. The tori karaage ($8), Japanese-style fried chicken, offers a healthy portion as well. Vegetable skewers are delicious but overwhelmingly unsubstantial—think two mushrooms for $4.

Whatever you do, you should absolutely order the Krispy Rice ($10), a dish that’s commonly seen in Los Angeles and New York sushi restaurants but remains suspiciously absent here. Four small cylinders of sushi rice get deep fried and topped with spicy tuna—each crispy bite delivers big flavor and a warm, soft interior.

The basil- and miso-marinated, grilled black cod ($15) showcases chef Takehara’s fine dining background. It’s simultaneously decadent and delicate, with a pile of fried leeks and an incredible, buttery miso emulsion spread across the plate.

You won’t find any sushi here, but there are a few dishes that’ll satisfy raw fish cravings.

Again, Takehara’s sauce skills shine with the barely seared tuna ($15), which hovers above a blend of sesame and miso.

At lunch, the regular two menus are subbed out in favor of bento box-style options. The main dish comes with a sizeable salad, umami-rich miso soup, pickled veggies and a bowl of shortgrain rice—a fabulous deal. I thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully seared, furikake-crusted salmon ($16) served over bok choy.

Thoughtful details abound, from the ceramic chopstick holders to the cucumber water. Servers are warm, knowledgeable and adept at spacing out your mass orders into a leisurely dining experience. A board of specials always tempts, and the owners keep rolling out more goodies, like housemade kombucha.

Judging by the groups of Japanese grandmothers enjoying an 11 a.m. ramen lunch, and the Japanese parents lugging in strollers for dinner, Binchoyaki is exactly what the community—and this historic neighborhood—needed. Ω

He picked it up, tasted the herb-speckled golden halo, and it was good. It’s quite easy to see Sarah Palin as the inspiration for Penelope Easter, the dumb-as-a-corn-husk (or is she?) candidate for lieutenant governor of Nebraska in playwright Peter Sinn Nachtrieb’s The Totalitarians.

A former roller derby queen, Penny’s got the hair, the firepower and the fear-instilling ability to go off-script and shoot from the lip.

Sounds like Donald Trump, too, you say? The play premiered in 2014 before Trump became, well, Trump, but it seems terrifyingly accurate now.

This unsettling satirical comedy is equal parts bizarre and hysterical. It centers on Francine (a tightly wound Kelley Ogden), a frustrated speechwriter whose goal is to help elect the seemingly unelectable Penny (Jamie Jones, a force of nature who leaves little on stage standing. save the sturdy walls of designer Stephen Decker’s ingenious set). With one magical speech, Penny becomes viable and Francine can look forward to possibly leaving Nebraska for the big time.

Their only obstacles: Francine’s doctor husband Jeffrey (Cassidy Brown, an engaging everyman type) and an aspiring revolutionary named Ben (the delightfully off-kilter Casey Worthington), who intend to stop Penny or die trying.

Director Peter Mohrmann clearly relishes all this delicious absurdity, seemingly giving free rein to his actors as it all goes wackadoodle into hilarious obscenity, vulgarity, sex of all sorts and violence that leaves some characters choking to death and the audience choking back tears of laughter.

5 A Revolutionary Mind Even if Leslie Lewinter-Suskind’s new play A Revolutionary Mind weren’t as powerful as it is, the play would still worth seeing if only for the strong performances by the quartet who make up the cast: Marion Jeffery, Berman Obaldia, Michael T. Erwin and Joe Monroe.

Directed by Ray Tatar, the play tells the story of Susan (Jeffery), a boomer-era activist, who once wanted to change the world—but first she wanted to marry and then came the two children.

As the play begins, she and husband (Monroe) await news of their daughter, an activist herself, who has gone off to film atrocities around the world, and who is now missing.

Throughout the play, Susan revisits the ’60s and relives her fervor and her passion to make the world a better place. She also examines how the life decisions she made impacted that passion.

Susan also has discussions with activistfilmmaker Raymundo Gleyzer (Obaldia), who chides her for choosing to be a suburban wife instead of getting in the trenches and really working for change rather that just attending meetings and sending donations.

While all give powerful performances, it is the scenes between Jeffery and Obaldia which resonate the strongest. “How do you quiet the real world so you can hear the real world?” Susan asks.

The Vaquita porpoise ( P h o c o e n a s i n u s ) , is currently the most endangered marine mammal in the world. Approximately 60 exist in the wild based on a recent study by the Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita (CIRVA). Inhabiting the Sea of Cortez between California and Mexico, the Vaquita is threatened due to the use of gill nets by fishermen to catch shrimp. Additionally, the endangered Totoaba fish is in demand in China also causing the accidental capture of the Vaquita. The BFG The most heartwarming story about an orphan’s kidnapping you’ll see all year.

It’s been 34 years since director Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Melissa Mathison enchanted the world with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The new Disney movie The BFG is their first collaboration since their segment of 1983’s The Twilight Zone, and it’s a pleasure to report that their creative chemistry first exhibited on E.T. is still strong. (Alas, in Mathison’s case we must speak in the past tense; she died of cancer in November 2015 while The BFG was in production.)

Let’s not mince words. The BFG is a fantasy masterpiece, a bottomless treasure chest of magical wonders that will be cherished by children and children-at-heart for as long as movies live. I took my 9-year-old niece to an advance screening and she pronounced it “awesome.” She meant it in the casual way that kids usually do, pronouncing it to rhyme with “possum.” Still, she didn’t know how right she was; The BFG is awesome and marvelous in every meaning of the words, including and especially the most literal.

“BFG” stands for Big Friendly Giant. We see him first through the eyes of Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), an English child who spies him late one night from the window of her orphanage. Seeing her, he snatches her from her bed and spirits her away to his cave in the Land of the Giants. Sophie expects to be eaten, but the giant is a vegetarian, mocked and abused by all

the other giants because he refuses to eat children.

He kidnapped Sophie because he knows she’d have told other “human beans” about him, which would only lead to a great giant-hunt, and the BFG can’t have that. Sophie will have to stay with him, hidden from the child-eating others, for the rest of her life.

The BFG is played by Mark Rylance, who won an Oscar for Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies.

Rylance, one of the most respected stage actors alive, has surely found the role for which he’ll be remembered. He and the wonderful young Barnhill (whose entire career so far consists of six episodes of the British TV series 4 O’Clock Club) develop a deep and touching rapport, holding their own among some of the most breathtaking visual effects in movie history.

Mathison’s script is adapted from Roald Dahl’s children’s novel, but she adds levels beyond what Dahl wrote. Dahl’s BFG is a “Dreamcatcher,” capturing dreams in the wild and transmitting them to children in their sleep. Mathison and Spielberg take the dream metaphor one step further than Dahl did; children can watch the movie for the straightforward story it tells (as can adults)—or they can see layers of meaning in it, as a story of dreams within dreams within dreams.

Either way, any parent who doesn’t take the kids to see The BFG will be guilty of child abuse. Ω

In backwoods Mississippi during the Civil War, dirt farmer Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) leads an anti-Confederate insurgency and later, after the war, openly cohabits with a former slave (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), proudly acknowledging his children by her. It’s a true story, with political and racial ramifications well into the 20th century, and McConaughey and Mbatha-Raw are ideally cast. So much for the plus-side of this disjointed, lifeless movie; its assets (including beautiful scenery well-photographed

by Benoît Delhomme) are outweighed by the fact that script and direction are by the spectacularly inept Gary Ross. As with Seabiscuit, Ross falsifies the story when the truth would be more dramatic and cheaper to film; and as with The Hunger Games, he makes even hand-to-hand combat confusing and dull. J.L.

Finding Dory

That sweetly forgetful fish from Finding Nemo (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) feels long-lost memories stirring of the parents she hasn’t seen since childhood (Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy), and sets out with her friends Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence) to reunite with them. Pixar does it again—or to be more specific, directors Andrew Stanton and Angus MacLane and writers Stanton, Victoria Strouse and Bob Peterson. Like Toy Story 2 (also a Stanton brainchild), here’s a sequel that not so much surpasses the original as deepens and enriches it, making it forever impossible to think of the two movies separately. Exhilarating adventure, irresistible wit, breathtaking visuals and an all-star voice cast (just about everybody wanted part of this one) combine in a seamless banquet of pure entertainment. J.L.

Now You See Me 2

The Robin Hood-like magicians of Now You See Me (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo and Dave Franco, joined by newcomer Lizzy Caplan) reunite for another sting—which goes sour, landing them in the clutches of a tech genius (Daniel Radcliffe) who dragoons them into his own shadowy scheme. Like its precursor, this sequel is very much a magic act itself, filled with misdirection and sleight of hand—and like that first movie, it’s great fun, with a delightful surprise almost every five minutes. Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman return too, and director Jon M. Chu navigates the convolutions of Ed Solomon and Pete Chiarelli’s script with an unaccustomed sprightly touch. Here’s that rare sequel that improves on the original— though you do have to have seen the original to be able to follow it. J.L.

Edgar Rice Burroughs’ hero returns to the screen, played by Alexander Skarsgård; he’s a handsome fellow but with little screen charisma and less chemistry with co-star Margot Robbie (as a rather smug and snotty Jane). Adam Cozad and Craig Brewer’s script is incoherent (Wait, how did we get here? And where did those guys come from?) and filled with unforced errors. (it’s “Lord Greystoke,” not “Lord Clayton.”) David Yates’ direction is maladroit—scenes don’t match or flow, action is clumsily staged and poorly edited by Mark Day, the camera too close and out of focus; Yates resorts to swooping camera moves when he can’t think of any other way to make a shot interesting, which is often. Samuel L. Jackson offers comic relief, but half-heartedly, as if it’s hardly worth the effort. Nice CGI scenery, though. J.L.

Swiss Army Man

Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert make their feature directing debut with this strange, surreal, wholly original and surprisingly emotional existentialist black comedy. Paul Dano stars as Hank, a suicidal castaway who gets a new lease on life when he befriends Manny (Daniel Radcliffe), a flatulent corpse who washes up on the beach Manny possesses inexplicable powers—his powerful farts allow Hank to ride him off the island like a Jet Ski, and his rotting body serves as a water purifier—and the two men form an intense bond that might only exist in Hank’s malnourished and deteriorating brain. Dano was born and bred for this sort of cuddly dementia, while Radcliffe has never been better, and the two actors forge a great onscreen rapport. Kwan and Scheinert can’t quite sustain the invention and energy all the way to the end, but most of Swiss Army Man is dazzlingly warped stuff. D.B.

The Neon Demon

A teenager newly arrived in LA (Elle Fanning) rises meteorically in the world of fashion modeling while more seasoned beauties eye her with resentment. Writer-director Nicolas Winding Refn presents a stylish, shallow movie about a stylish, shallow profession, staging his heroine’s progress from naif to ice queen in lurid tableaux of languid strobes, cold, razor-sharp edges and slo-mo cascades of glitter. For a while, Fanning’s screen presence draws us in; we almost believe this Cinderellain-reverse story. But Refn’s urge to shock drives him to push things too far, and just as the story peaks the whole movie goes stark raving nuts in a hallucinatory jumble without even the nightmare logic of surrealism. The movie’s style deserts it, and we realize that the substance was never there in the first place. J.L.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Andy Samberg stars alongside his The Lonely Island comedy teammates Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone (the latter two also directed) in this likable but limp music mockumentary. Samberg plays pampered and narcissistic ex-boy band member Conner Friel, re-dubbed Conner4Real for a white-hot solo career, and prepared to drop his revoltingly self-aggrandizing sophomore album as the movie opens. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping features the same number of gratuitous celebrity walk-on “jokes” as any other Judd Apatow production, but for once this lowestcommon-denominator tactic actually fits the material. At this point, though, it’s hard to imagine a subject less ripe for genteel satire than music industry excess, and yet even the best bits of Popstar are utterly fangless. There are some laughs, especially in the brisk opening half, but the joke wears thin pretty quick, and the plot-heavy final third assumes an emotional connection that the film never even tried to create. The Shallows

Surfing on a secluded Mexican beach, an American medical student (Blake Lively) is attacked by a shark. Wounded, her blood staining the water, stranded on a tiny rock with the tide coming in, she struggles to survive and outwit the shark, who circles her relentlessly waiting for one false move. It’s Jaws meets Gravity, with the attacks (which are quick and brutal, disposing of three hapless extras while Lively watches in horror) taking a back seat to a story of survival, as Lively’s character calls upon her medical education and personal resources she never knew she had to stay alive from hour to hour. It’s a one-woman show for Lively just as Gravity was for Sandra Bullock, well-written by Anthony Jaswinski and showcased by Jaume ColletSerra’s tense direction and the expert editing of Joel Negron. Warcraft: The Beginning

A race of hulking manlike creatures invades the human world through a magical portal, growling unintelligibly around their huge tusks, while humans posture and declaim, struggling vainly to be heard over the bombast of Ramin Djawadi’s music. Fans of the video-game franchise may be able to follow the incoherent plot. Then again, it may not matter; they may simply rhapsodize over the breathtaking CGI and nonstop battle scenes.

For the rest of us, it’s just another lousy videogame movie with pathetic delusions of Game of Thrones—all the thunder, flying arrows and flashing broadswords but none of the political intrigue or subtlety of character. Even the names aren’t clearly spoken; blame director Duncan Jones and his co-writers Charles Leavitt and Chris Metzen for concocting such silly names to begin with. J.L.

decade ago. He spent much of 2006 through 2008 creating not just his own music, but advising and producing beats for other artists, including Tip Toe, Tjay, Shiz Jaz and Sim Biz. “It’s about the support, straight up. If I feel it, and I see it, then I do it,” Cunningham says.

Of course, it’s not just about talent. People have to have the drive, too—a fact he’s learned the hard way.

One year: The songs on Life in 24 Framesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; upcoming record CTRL+Z blur together like moments in time.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of those indie rock albums that demands to be listened to from start to finish, in order, on repeat: beautiful, emotional, at times riveting and, most importantly, chronological.

The concept album is made up of 12 songs, one for every month.

Together, they document a particularly turbulent, challenging year for frontman Kris Adams. In January of 2013, he found out he was having a child. In September, the baby was born. In November, after months of mentally falling apart, he finally decided to see a therapist, which spawned a hopeful December.

Life in 24 Frames is hosting an early release party at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Harlowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Restaurant & Nightclub (2708 J Street). Tickets cost $6-$8. Digital download cards will be available, and the record will be put out on vinyl, Spotify and iTunes in August. Adams is pretty nervous about it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m putting out a piece of music that would traditionally be written down on a notebook in my therapistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stressful.â&#x20AC;?

The album came about at an interesting time for the band as well.

For a while, a Life in 24 Frames show meant seeing seven or even eight musicians on stage. At the end of 2014, when the album just started taking shape, the group shrunk down to four. But that allowed for those who remained to get even closer, for CTRL+Z to be created in a more intimate fashion with producer Robert Cheek (Band of Horses).

As for the name, which typically signals the undo keyboard command? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a geeky way of saying Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sorry,â&#x20AC;? New flow: A stone-faced performer sat cross-legged on the ground with her hair in a severe part. When she tossed a handbell at her singing bowl, sending it clattering across the floor, I knew the evening had earned its experimental jazz description.

Local guitarist Ross Hammond reconfigured the In the Flow Festival (R.I.P.) as the Gold Lion Arts Summer Festival to spread performances throughout the year. Previously a four- or five-day event, the intimate weekend still served up mindexpanding and often smile-inducing jazz. On Friday, around 30 focused attendees sat in folding chairs, sometimes leaning forward to pay closer attention to the demanding music.

Husband-and-wife duo Grex mixed Jimi Hendrix with John Coltrane and a dash of adorableness. They often smiled at each other for cues and sang about animals, like their pet rat and the last of the carrier pigeons, Martha. (â&#x20AC;&#x153;How does it feel, Martha, to be the last of your kind?â&#x20AC;? cooed pianist M. Rei Scampavia Evangelista in a honeyed voice.) Their crackly guitar reverb and electric piano was cinematic, like the creepy scene in a very hip kidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; movie.

Next up, Amy Reed and Collette Jay McCaslin threw bells around the room and explored the outer edges of sound with utter dedication to their craft. Reed wandered with her guitar, laying crystal-like objects on the fingerboard and playing with a slide to achieve a prickly sound. She echoed McCaslin, surrounded by a bounty of bells and wind instruments. McCaslin honked her clarinet like a duck, sending the guitar into hardcore groans, until both eerily faded away.

The stellar duo Snake or Man takes its name from The Last Wave, an Australian moviescape beset with freak thunderstorms. Bass guitarist Steuart Liebig personified its namesake with licks that wended downward into a melodic eddy. The percussionist, Dax Compise, shook a spiral trash cymbal, creating a whooshing wind. When he pawed a brush against jingle bells, it made a noise so air-like that it gave me actual goosebumps.

Rounding out the evening, Rent Romusâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Blood Ensemble woke up the audience with lively saxophones,

Comparisons to his idol Stevie Wonder are not remiss, though I’d venture to say the frenetic nature of his music is more akin to Jamiroquai, with contemporary touches of POP SOUL artists like Aloe Blacc and Mayer Hawthorne. Allen is presently on a national tour of Radius, his most recent full-length album that came out May 2015.

Any music lover that’s lived in Sacramento for a while is no doubt familiar with Dean Haakenson’s indie-folk-rock band Be Brave Bold Robot. This Saturday, Haakenson takes a sharp left turn with the release of Short Raps Project, which contains 36 roughly minute-long rap tunes. Haakenson (or Honkey D) does a lot of the rapping, but much of the FOLk-RAP Sacramento music community contributes beats and raps, including Death Grips’ Flatlander, Saint Solitaire’s Andrew Barnhart and singer-songwriter Justin Farren. Defecrator is probably the most Satanic Sacramento band, so if you’re into that whole “bullet belts BLAckeneD DeATH and burning Bibles in the parking lot” thing, you best scooch your Belphegor-loving butt over to Cafe Colonial on Saturday. Bands will be playing both kinds of music there—black metal and death metal—and they’ll all be from within a two-hour radius, so it’s about as farm-to-fork as sonic blasphemy can get. Weird and iconic guitarist Buckethead has played the full gamut of music; his discography is so extensive that knowing where to delve into it can be daunting.

He has played with so many different musicians (Bootsy Collins AvANT-GArDE and Iggy Pop, to name a few) and contributed to so many albums, soundtracks and commercials, that one might wonder if Buckethead is, in fact, the Many-Faced God—all guitarists, all musicians. This would explain the white mask hiding the blank slate that is the faceless man. As for the bucket on his head, well, he’s probably powerless without it.

This five-piece produces pleasingly low-fi, rough-and-tumble, often lightning-speed bluegrass that isn’t a new take on an old thing so much as simply a good version of an old thing. I wouldn’t say that I like Taylor Swift’s music.

But after working one Labor Day weekend gig for Sacramento’s Local 50 Stagehands at Sleep Train Arena a few years COUNTrY back, I grew to like her. Maybe it was because I was so impressed she had 23 semitrucks worth of stage and backstage gear. Maybe it was because she put on one helluva show. Maybe it was because so many members of her touring crew worked so hard for their money. Whatever the reason, I realized people from all walks of life loved her, and this Colusa-based cover band does an excellent job mimicking the real thing.

The Haymarket Squares describes its sound as “punkgrass,” a combination of bluegrass and punk. I’ll bite. At first listen, all the elements of bluegrass are present.

Busy mandolin and banjo are heightened with harmonica, and the twang of the Haymarket Squares’ sound is credited to its slide guitar. But there’s also accordion, piano, and sometimes BLUEGrASS PUNK a kazoo—not quite punk, but the lyrics and quick-witted vocals give this band from Phoenix, Ariz., its edge.

Real talk The column “Too Zen, Mom” (Ask Joey, SN&R, June 9, 2016) reminded me of a friend who always communicates from a space of greater superiority, especially in spiritual matters. Recently, after her husband died unexpectedly, I sent her a sympathy card. She wrote back to tell me that she was in a “different place.” Then she shared the Bible passage she read at her husband’s memorial. I emailed to say that the selected passage was one of my favorites. She responded immediately: “I read the entire verse with the real meanings!” When I asked her to share her insights about the real meaning, she was vague. What do you make of this?

Conversation is not a competitive sport, but that spirit of dominance is driving the two of you apart. When communication fails we feel misunderstood, inadequate or frustrated. What should we do with those feelings? Use them to understand ourselves, preferably.

I’ve had convos in which the other person was intent on teaching me something they felt was important.

Years ago, an acquaintance asked how I was feeling, and I launched excitedly into good news. “Yes,” she said loudly, “but how do you feel?” I paused, surprised. It seemed obvious to me that I was excited.

She then suggested that I had done something wrong by not first verbally identifying the specific emotion I was feeling. I thanked her and moved on to speak to someone else. Weeks later, I learned that my acquaintance had been seeing a psychologist. Through therapy she realized that she had lived most of her life in denial of her feelings. This new insight inspired her into hyperawareness about whether others used words to describe their feelings. She believed that by naming each of her feelings during a conversation she was signaling her spiritual growth. Months passed before she had another realization: She had blocked her ability to experience other people’s feelings (like my excitement) unless those feelings were identified verbally.

In the meantime, I just thought she was odd. Not true—she was just in process, as we all are. I’m sure some people have

considered me odd as I have traversed my own path of awakening and growth.

You obviously want open and intimate chats with your friend. Have you considered telling her? An experiment in being vulnerable might also reveal what fears these convos activate in you. And, the next time a conversation turns competitive, direct your attention inside yourself.

Notice if the words hurt or align or have no effect. Then, say “thank you” to your friend for the gift of a new awareness.

—AG916 Microsoft is in the game. They just announced a partnership with marijuana “seed-to-sale” data management company Kind. There are already a few companies (like MJ Freeway) that offer this service, but Microsoft is the first big corporation to enter the market by allowing the company access to its specialized cloud services, if you don’t count Facebook’s support of the 420-friendly social app MassRoots.

The cannabis industry is attracting big money from everywhere.

I spent a day at the National Cannabis Industry Association’s giant business conference in Oakland last week, and there were rich folks from all over looking to get into the game. The cannabis businessconference industry is booming. You can’t swing a dead cat without being invited to a conference. I bet the hotel and convention industries are very happy about all this weed-legalization talk. Weed creates all kinds of jobs, not just weed jobs.

As to the Adult Use of Marijuana Act possibly making recreational cannabis legal: Who knows? AUMA has money and power. Future Gov. Gavin Newsom is all for it. All the major activist groups are for it, too, but hardcore activists continue to badmouth it, and I don’t think many growers are happy about all the proposed rules. Add in the fact that some people just hate weed more than they like new jobs and tax revenue, and I would say that there’s maybe a 50-50 chance that AUMA will pass.

That could all change as the campaign ramps up.

I will say this: If AUMA doesn’t pass, there is a good chance that California will fall behind all of the states where weed is legal. Not in terms of growing weed—our black market export game is hella strong—but in terms of keeping people out of jail and embracing the future.

Weed creates all kinds of jobs.

Where can I buy some quality seeds? Doesn’t matter the type. I just want to try to grow the plant. Any strains you recommend?

—DB Woo-hoo! Growing cannabis is fairly easy. Most clubs these days have a decent selection of seeds; just call around. Starting a cannabis plant from seed is hella fun and just like growing any other plant from seed. One thing, though: Cannabis is a sexed plant. The female plants are the ones you want. The males aren’t very good for smoking, and if you let the boys grow into adulthood, they will fill your female plants with seeds and all your pot will look like it escaped from the ’70s. It may be easier to buy a clone or two from your local dispensary and throwing it in the dirt. (With clones, though, the fact that the plants are already grown mean that you run the risk of attracting any present pathogens into your garden.)

Blue Dream is easy to grow and a big yielder. I also like Sour Diesel or Trainwreck for outdoor growing. Trainwreck will take a little extra time to ripen, so be patient. readers, Jay O’Dell, told me this story: “After my cancer surgery, a nurse said to me, ‘You may as well try magical thinking. Regular thinking hasn’t helped.’ I said to the nurse, ‘Well, why the hell not?’ That was seven years ago.” In bringing O’Dell’s testimony to your attention, I don’t mean to suggest you will have any health problems that warrant a strong dose of magical thinking. Not at all. But you may get wrapped up in a psychological twist or a spiritual riddle that would benefit from magical thinking. And what exactly is magical thinking? Here’s one definition: The stories that unfold in your imagination have important effects on what actually happens to you.

The K-ZAP come back After a 23-year-long nap, the rock radio station K-ZAP is celebrating its one-year anniversary of returning to the air. The station originally launched in 1968 and ran for 23 years, before returning last summer. Now at 93.3 FM, the all-volunteer station includes Dennis Newhall, a staff member at the original station and co-founder of the new K-ZAP. SN&R distracted Newhall from his work long enough to talk about how radio has changed, album-orientated rock, the K-ZAP cat and more.

How has the first year been?

It’s been pretty amazing to sort of pull a radio station out of our hats and make it, I think, sound great, like a well-funded radio station, for a year. [It’s] been quite a feat.

We’re all really pleased with it.

What went into bringing it back?

We wanted to bring back a station in the spirit of the original K-ZAP, which was a rock station that not only played a lot of the great music that existed already, but continued to move forward and look for new music that fit the sound. We felt that Sacramento had been missing a forwardlooking rock station for 23 years; it was on the air for 23 and off for 23. And so, several of us, with history at K-ZAP and other rock stations in Sacramento, jumped on the opportunity when the FCC announced that they were going to grant low-power FM licenses.

How has radio changed from 20 years ago?

Radio really started to change about the time K-ZAP was experiencing its biggest financial success and its biggest audience.

Corporations were starting to, well, had been, by then, for quite some time been using a lot of research, a lot of kind of conservative approaches to bring in listeners in order to sell more ads and boost ad revenue. Much more of a corporate model for profits than a way to serve the community in some way. Which, up until the last ’70s, early ’80s, the laws were in place that assured the radio was more a community, mom-and-pop entity, than a big corporate thing. … We’re actually taking kind of a retro approach in what we do. We’re reaching back to what was called album-orientated rock, or AOR, in the ’70s and ’80s.

By album-oriented, you mean …

Well, we don’t follow necessarily what the hit singles are. … James Taylor put out his most successful album in years, and we didn’t like the singles, they didn’t fit us. They were like middle-of-the-road songs, but he had a couple of really good introspective rockier songs on the album, so we played those instead of the ones that the record labels might want to have you focus on. And, you know, the ability to play more than one track, instead of just the single.

woman, it could have been a turtle, it could have been whatever. But it was four cats. A little later down the road, K-ZAP was looking for a bumper sticker that would grab attention, so that cat was the basis for an artist named Bill Styler, who took that and his own cat named Tubby and used it to create the famous logo.

You guys are doing online radio streams, right?

Oh, yeah. Actually, our broadcast signal is limited. The low-power FM signals, we knew it was going to be limited to begin with.

It’s kind of a bone that the FCC threw to community radio. It’s very limited by the big signals that already exist. It’s like the holes where there was nothing. And so, they were meant not to be very strong, and there were some engineering issues that made them even less so. So, we wouldn’t have near the audience that we do if we were just a broadcast station. … We have a lot of people, a ton of people, that listen to us on their apps, and everybody, every age group is adapting to “radio” on the internet, which is great.

What got you into radio?

What’s with the cat logo?

I’m trying to remember the year, because I was there then, I would say it was about 1973. Roger Shepherd, who was a local artist and did the K-ZAP logo, he did posters for bands, he did logo’s for K-ZAP’s competition, he did artwork for the two competing nightclubs in town; he was a friend of K-ZAP. And he did some bus sides—you know, the ads that they stick on the sides—with four cats, very similar to the current cat. They were just cute little figments of Roger’s imagination that he used on there, just as, you know, it could have been a beautiful

Insanity. I think it’s a desire to turn people on to music they may not be familiar with. I didn’t get into it because I wanted to be an announcer, I got into it because it was fun playing records and telling people about them. If you’ve ever been to a party where somebody wants you to stop talking and ‘Hey hey, listen to this, listen to this,’ it’s one step less obnoxious than that. Ω
