A Vision to Care for All SPIRIT program contributes free services to County’s care of uninsured immigrants

iving in the shadows of immigration limbo, a scared and sickly Salvador Gutierrez acted as his own doctor for 16 years.

Without medical insurance or legal residency, the now 34-year-old Sacramentan injected himself with insulin that he managed to find wherever he could, to help control his diabetes. His daily routine: At least two shots of the drug. Recently, Gutierrez’ vision deteriorated to the point he couldn’t read.

He would have gone blind had it not been for Dr. Tony Tsai, a local retinal surgeon who performed eye surgery on Gutierrez at Mercy General Hospital — for free.

Dignity Health and Dr. Tsai donated their services through the Sacramento Physicians’ Initiative to Reach out, Innovate and Teach (SPIRIT), a program of the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society (SSVMS).

With over 75 physician volunteers, along with committed local health systems, SPIRIT provides high-caliber surgical and specialty services for low-income undocumented immigrants and other uninsured patients, says Liza Trujillo Kirkland, director of SSVMS’s Community Service, Education and Research Fund.

“Our physicians believe in access to care for all patients, regardless of their immigration status,” she says.

Since its creation in 1995, SPIRIT, in collaboration with the health systems, has provided more than $10 million in free care, treated over 41,000 patients and performed over 750 surgeries.

Besides the Medical Society, SPIRIT partners include Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, Sutter Health, UC Davis Health System and Sacramento Health and Human Services.

Active on multi-fronts, SPIRIT has recently fortified its bonds with Sacramento County.

In cooperation with the health systems, SPIRIT this year is donating a substantial amount in services to Healthy Partners, the county’s renewed health care program for undocumented immigrants, which began in January. The volunteer doctors are helping Healthy Partners provide what would have been costly specialty care to undocumented immigrants who, like Gutierrez, so desperately need it.

This spring, alarmed over his failing vision, the professional cook turned to La Familia Counseling Center, a partner of both SPIRIT and The California Endowment.

retinal imaging. His finding: Gutierrez had severe diabetic retinopathy, meaning he’d soon go blind.

SPIRIT contacted Dr. Tsai, a retinal specialist and SPIRIT volunteer, who performed the surgery.

“Salvador was just like any other patient in my clinic,” Tsai says. “I was able to provide him the same level of surgical care as anyone else.”

Says Gutierrez: “Words cannot express how thankful I am.”

It’s been more than a year since SN&R made public-records requests to learn how and why Mayor Kevin Johnson’s staff used private Gmail accounts for city and other business.

It’s been nearly a year since the mayor sued SN&R to block access to more than 400 emails, citing clientattorney privilege, and almost 11 months since SN&R met Johnson in court to argue otherwise.

Thousands of emails using the OMKJ (“Office of Mayor Kevin Johnson”) address were eventually discovered on the city’s email servers.

The emails showed mayoral staff was being used to support Johnson’s work on behalf of nonprofit entities.

Much wrangling has since ensued, including a privilege log prepared by the mayor’s legal team and the subsequent release of hundreds of withheld emails that turned out to not be privileged at all. Then, in April, the court released a tentative ruling declaring that Johnson’s attorneys at Ballard Spahr failed to prove the 158 remaining emails and attachments are privileged—the court directed Johnson and SN&R to further “meet and confer” on whether certain emails are protected.

Our lawyers did just that, even as Johnson’s lawyers took the unusual step of revising the privilege log to reflect for the first time that several of the emails had been forwarded to Ballard Spahr attorneys—and were thus protected.

We return to court Friday, June 3.

Then, the judge will determine the fate of the remaining messages and attachments.

What to expect? SN&R is confident that the court will agree with us that at least some additional emails—withheld by Johnson for over a year—will be made public.

We found my turtle in Indiana on the side of the road. We picked it up and we kept it with us and placed it in the bathtub. We named him Terdy and we brought him home. He loved eating lettuce and tomatoes. We would take him for a walk and he would eat spiders, crickets and cockroaches.

Kevin Johnson isn’t running for re-election next week. Yet most Sacramentans might be surprised to learn that the outgoing mayor has raked in more money this campaign season than any Sacramento politician or candidate—even mayoral frontrunner Darrell Steinberg.

K.J.’s taken in these donations despite the video of a teenaged girl accusing him of molestation. The video was filmed in Phoenix in 1996 but only surfaced in October of last year. It drew national coverage, and the mayor announced he would not seek a third term after its release.

Some might assume such a video and accusations would have donors thinking twice about giving. But it’s been big business as usual for Johnson.

In fact, the mayor has brought in more than $1 million in “behested” donations to his private organizations and nonprofits since national sports website Deadspin made the video public.

How does Johnson continue to rake in millions of dollars? Why do regional powerhouses such as UC Davis, Golden 1 Credit Union and Sutter Health—and also private citizens such as Sacramento Republic co-owner Kevin Nagle and Democratic Party

benefactor Angelo Tsakopoulos—keep giving to the K.J. brand?

The donations come in the form of behests. A behest is when a group or person donates money to an elected official’s private organization or nonprofit.

Unlike campaign donations, behested money is given in unlimited amounts and how it is spent is difficult to track.

Jessica Levinson, an elections law and government expert at Loyola Law School, explained that even though these behests are a “loophole” around campaign contributions, “that doesn’t mean nothing good comes of it.” Behests benefit nonprofits and causes important

to the city, she said. But they also benefit a politician’s personal interests.

“And I think Kevin Johnson is definitely quite adept at” using behests to bring in money, she added.

The mayor’s network boasts a handful of private groups or 501(c)(3) nonprofits, which have taken in millions of dollars during his time in office, according to city of Sacramento records and filings. The money allows Johnson to pay for additional employees, often noncity staff who do their work inside City Hall and who portray themselves to outsiders as city workers. The mayor says this helps him do more good in Sacramento. Some critics refer to this as a parallel government that is only about advancing Johnson’s interests.

These behested donations are unprecedented in City Hall politics and fueled a fundraising machine that will give Johnson significant influence in the region for years to come, long after he’s left the mayor’s office.

baLLot StuFFerS not a factor in his decision to not run for re-election—still raised nearly $1.3 million with behests, according to city filings from this past April. By comparison, candidate Steinberg raised less than $400,000 in new money during this same time frame for his campaign.

In the first four months of 2016, Johnson brought in more behested donations than he did during the same period last year. Between January 1 and April 7, he amassed $658,000, according to filings with the city of Sacramento. During that same period in 2015, he raised $637,500.

It’s worth noting that this is unlikely a complete picture of the mayor’s total fundraising intake. Johnson has a track record of bad transparency when it comes to behests, and the city does not enforce disclosure. That’s up to the Fair Political Practices Commission, which in 2012 tagged the mayor with a $37,500 fine for failing to report more than $3.5 million in behests, the largest penalty in state history.

Yet the money keeps coming in: In 2015, Johnson’s network pocketed more than $2.4 million, according to the city.

The mayor formed this web of private groups that can raise unlimited money in 2010. He did this in part because the former city attorney, Eileen Teichert, put up roadblocks to Johnson’s cadre of volunteers, advisers and interns from freely coming and going at City Hall, but mostly to bring in millions of dollars to his personal brand and causes. The Sacramento Public Policy Foundation is the umbrella group for this money machine. It’s headed by Fred Hiestand, the mayor’s longstanding attorney. SPPF has brought in more than $2.5 million since 2010.

Nagle, a partner with the Sacramento Republic FC soccer team and a corporate pharmaceutical mogul, has been one of Johnson’s top donors over the years. In less than four months this year, he gave $95,000 to SPPF, and $195,000 overall to Johnson’s various private groups, including the St. Hope charter-school organization he founded. Since 2010, Nagle has given more than $1.25 million in tax-deductible donations to Johnson.

Nagle, who is also the largest local shareholder of the Kings, declined to discuss his donations to the mayor.

“There’s a fear … that it’s another way to gain influence, and in certain ways circumvent the contribution limits,” Nicolas Heidorn, a policy and legislative

“I think I’ve been doing a lot of hustling out there, and I know that I can at least come in second place in the race,” said Charles rudy Frazier, a 59-year-old “advocate,” according to his candidate paperwork, who is running as a write-in candidate.

Frazier was the only lesser-known candidate to respond to SN&R’s interview request. Along with front-runners Steinberg, the ex-Senate leader, Councilwoman Ashby and bail bondsman Tony Lopez, the ballot includes nurse assistant aaron Carranza, mother marlene andrade, pizza maker michael edwards and 80-year-old insurance broker richard Jones. (Although he dropped out of the race in April, activist Russell Rawlings’ name will also appear.)

Meanwhile, incumbents are being challenged in two Sacramento City Council races. In District 8, Councilman Larry Carr faces a challenge from Chris baker and ronald bell, both retired pastors.

Bell says his work with the city’s Gang Prevention and Intervention Task Force has informed his main platform. “Crime and safety are at the very top of my agenda,” he said. “No one in south Sacramento should have to live in fear.”

In District 4, 54-year-old medical cannabis coordinator Susan Colombe is attempting to unseat Councilman Steve Hansen.

marred memoriaL day At least seven shootings marred the Memorial Day weekend, and eclipsed a holiday that commemorates fallen soldiers with a burst of street warfare.

South Sacramento was the primary setting for the violence.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the May 30 drive-by shooting that brought a hail of gunfire down on four men and one woman, aged 18 to 64, standing near a front yard of a residence in the Oak Park neighborhood.

An 18-year-old male remained in critical condition on Tuesday after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head the previous afternoon, said department spokesman Sgt. Tony Turnbull. The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District transported him and two other gunshot victims to local hospitals, while a fourth, also in critical condition, was driven separately. A fifth victim was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The victims were standing on one side of the street when gunfire erupted from a dark-colored compact vehicle driving south on 44th Street toward 15th Avenue in central Oak Park, Turnbull said. “There was a small gathering at a residence,” he added. “Some victims were from there, some were not.”

A day later, it remained unclear how many occupants were in the suspect vehicle. Turnbull said there was no indication the shooting was gang-related “at this point.”

On May 29, the body of a 16-year-old girl was discovered dead from an upper-body gunshot wound in a parked car in south Sacramento. Sheriff’s detectives booked a 17-year-old male into juvenile hall Monday morning on suspicion of committing the murder of macy murphy.

The drive-by violence continued into Tuesday afternoon, when a 20-year-old man was shot standing in the front yard of a North Highlands residence. His condition was listed as critical.

The Sacramento Police Department responded to five shootings in the same three-day span, including two suspected drive-bys.

With a city budget deficit projected to leap above $36 million in 2019, Sacramento city officials have been blocked from cutting costs to the fire department.

Councilman Jeff Harris, City Manager John Shirey, City Budget Manager Dawn Holm and fire Chief Walter White have recommended the Sacramento Fire Department transition to staffing its ambulances with single-role paramedics, who are trained to handle medical emergencies but not firefighting.

The move would save the city more than $6 million annually in staffing costs for its 15 ambulances, according to a finance department report. But Holm said any recommendation from the finance department has to be negotiated with the Sacramento Fire Department’s union, Sacramento Area Firefighters Local 522.

And so far, the union isn’t budging.

Local 522 spokesman Roberto Padilla defended dual-role paramedics, saying they provide the “best service possible” to city residents.

He also rejected the notion of reducing his department’s fire engine teams from four firefighters to three, which is the norm in suburban cities like Elk Grove and Roseville, and would trim another $2.4 million from the city’s annual budget, according to an SN&R analysis of 2014 State Controller’s Office data.

Comparisons to departments that use threeperson teams around Sacramento are “not fair,” Padilla said, because Sacramento is a metropolitan area. “We are in line with what is seen nationally,” he added. “It allows us to be more aggressive.”

The National Fire Prevention Agency recommends four firefighters per engine for a city with a population of 400,000 or greater. The city of Sacramento’s population is about 485,000, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

But such reductions are not unheard of at larger agencies.

In 2011, Gov. Jerry Brown shaved $250 million from the California budget by decreasing state firefighter teams from four to three firefighters per engine.

Sacramento Taxpayers Association President Katy Grimes says there’s no public safety reason not to do that here. The higher staffing ratio, she contended, “was something being driven by their union and not their need.”

Padilla favored comparisons to the Oakland Fire Department, which also employs four

firefighters per engine and has a similar population, of about 414,000. But Oakland, which employs 70 fewer firefighters than Sacramento’s 520, has also embraced other cost-cutting measures to maintain its four-firefighters-to-one-engine staffing ratio.

For instance, unlike Sacramento, OFD doesn’t operate its own fleet of ambulances, contracting instead with Alameda County to provide medical transports.

The Sacramento Fire Department responded to more than 83,000 calls in 2015, according to its service log, roughly 80 percent of which were for medical transportation. SFD operates its own fleet of ambulances, which respond to medical calls accompanied by a fire engine.

City officials previously tried staffing two ambulances with single-role personnel, through the 2013-14 approved budget. However, city council nixed its finance department’s attempt after the firefighters’ union objected to the unnegotiated “change in working conditions,” Padilla said.

Local union tactics to prevent a reduction in engine teams and single-role paramedics are “pretty stunning,” said Craig Powell, the president of Eye on Sacramento, a fiduciary watchdog. “It’s frankly shameful that this goes on in a city with such fiscal limits,” Powell said.

Sacramento’s top mayoral candidates favored the status quo, however.

Darrell Steinberg said in an email that public safety and emergency response should be the highest priority in the city budget.

“The next Mayor has an obligation to be open to constructive ideas to make all departments of city government more efficient and effective without compromising the levels of service which keep our neighborhoods safe,” he wrote.

His opponent, Councilwoman Angelique Ashby, said providing quality emergency medical services to residents is one of her highest priorities.

“So many of our calls require ambulances,” she said. “If all they can do when they get there is the medical piece then you’re kind of tying their hands.”

Ashby has received more than $284,000 in campaign donations from Local 522.

The union’s contract is up for negotiation in June 2018. Ω

Elk Grove teen booted from graduation ceremony for honoring African heritage

In a zero-tolerance move that local education officials are defending, an Elk Grove high school student was booted from a graduation ceremony last week for a dress-code violation that honored his Ghanaian heritage.

Cosumnes Oaks High School senior Nyree Holmes took to social media shortly after school administrators had him escorted from the May 24 graduation ceremony at Sleep Train Arena.

In a series of posts that quickly went viral, the 18-year-old merit scholar says he was forced to leave the ceremony after refusing commands to remove the traditional kente cloth draped around his shoulders, a common accessory among students acknowledging their African roots during graduation ceremonies.

Holmes says he was allowed to walk the stage when his name was called. But as he descended the stairs on the other side of the stage, he says he was met by three security personnel and escorted out of the building.

The resulting social media outcry over the student’s treatment put school officials in damage-control mode. The Elk Grove Unified School District arranged a press conference three days later to contain the fallout.

In a blog posted to its website before the press conference, the district claimed the “student was prohibited from participating in the remainder of the school’s graduation ceremony for refusing to follow direction of school officials who were attempting to uphold the established dress code and for ignoring repeated requests to remove unauthorized non-school award regalia.”

Holmes says he was specifically asked by Matthew Mason, Cosumnes Oaks’ director of student activities, to hand over the garment.

In an email, Mason said he wasn’t permitted to comment on the matter. “Unfortunately, it is my understanding that I must direct you to the Elk Grove Unified School District and Communications Director Xanthi Pinkerton to answer all media questions,” he wrote.

Mason’s profile on Rate My Teacher showed the quick effects of the controversy three days later. The teacher had an average score of 1.27 stars based on 13 reviews, six of which mentioned his role in the graduation flap.

The district attempted to shift the blame toward Holmes and his family, writing that “school officials were not given the opportunity to discuss with the family the student’s desire to wear the cloth.”

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department distanced itself from the unpopular decision.

Department spokesman Sgt. Tony Turnbull said that, while a department-employed school resource officer was present for Holmes’ removal, it was the Elk Grove Unified School District’s director of security who ordered it.

“Not our deputies,” Turnbull wrote in an email. “In fact, our deputies were dealing with a subject outside on a medical condition and conducting CPR. … This was a school decision.” Ω

SN&R film critics Daniel Barnes and Jim Lane summer up with blockbusters and indies, comedy, romance and action The summer solstice takes place on June 20 this year, and yet prevailing wisdom places the beginning of the summer movie season in early May. But in an age of year-round disaster films and superhero movies, what does the term “summer movie” even mean? And will Hollywood’s endless secretion of sequels and remakes keep it alive or hasten its demise? Speaking of remakes, what to make of the infantile male rage over a female Ghostbusters? Film critics Daniel Barnes and Jim Lane did not attempt to actually answer these hot-button questions—who can, really—but they did compile lists of their most anticipated movies of the “summer,” whatever that means.

DaNieL BaRNeS’ kiSS of Death

I

n SN&R’s 2014 summer movie preview, I listed Jupiter Ascending among my most anticipated films of the season; the film was promptly moved to a February 2015 release date on its way to becoming a box-office bomb and cultural punchline (for the record, I think it’s OK). Then, in 2015, I singled out such films as Manglehorn (49 percent approval on Rotten Tomatoes), Aloft (16 percent approval) and Hitman: Agent 47 (8 percent approval). So, when you’re reading this list of my most anticipated films of the summer, keep in mind that my endorsement is effectively a kiss of death.

Maggie’s Plan (June 10): I’ve been lukewarm on the works of Rebecca Miller (Personal Velocity, The Ballad of Jack and Rose) to date, but I’m ride-or-die with star Greta Gerwig after Mistress America, and this urbane romantic comedy looks like the summer’s best bet for sophisticated fizz. Set in a Woody Allen-esque world of high-maintenance intellectuals (Allen’s latest film Café Society also comes out this summer), Gerwig plays an independent New Yorker who lures a male teacher (Ethan Hawke) away from his imperious wife (Julianne Moore). Several years later, Gerwig has a change of heart, and schemes with the ex-wife to reunite the old couple.

The BFG (July 1): Steven Spielberg has spent the last decade in throwback mode, revisiting key moments in history and reveling in faux-John Ford classicism. As long he’s reaching back into the past, I’m happy that he’s making at least one oddball children’s fantasy, and taking his first stab at Roald Dahl in the process. Bridge of Spies Oscar-winner Mark Rylance dons the mo-cap armor to play the titular Big Friendly Giant, a runt and an outcast among his own kind for his refusal to eat children.

Suicide Squad (August 5): After the unapologetic rough edges of Fury and Sabotage, it’s safe to

say that writer-director David Ayer knows his way around a morally reprehensible genre film. He could be just the guy to shake the superhero movie out of its faceless stupor, a hard-boiled genre stylist who favors Quentin Tarantino-style viscera over endless cartoon whomping. I’m as prone to ad hominem attacks against superhero movies as any good critic, but even I’m excited to see this crazy thing, with its seeming embrace of rock ’n’ roll nihilism and socially conscious sociopathy.

Sausage Party (August 12): The entire high concept of the animated Sausage Party gets spelled out in the hilarious red-band trailer—all foods are self-aware and anthropomorphic like Pixar cars or Disney candelabras, but don’t realize their horrific fate until their final moments on the cutting board.

by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, with voice cameos by everyone you would expect (Paul Rudd, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera, et al.) plus Edward Norton as Sammy Bagel, Jr. It makes for an amazing trailer, but does this one-joke idea have enough stamina to sustain an 83-minute feature? I can’t wait to find out.

Kubo and the Two Strings (August 19): For a lot of critics, any new Disney-Pixar release, even a patently unnecessary cash-in sequel like this summer’s Finding Dory, would be a no-brainer for this list. But for my money, Laika is the gold standard in English-language animation in the moment, having turned out the brilliant but underseen stop-motion movies Coraline, Paranorman and The Boxtrolls. CEO Travis Knight debuts in the director’s chair with this original story, about a Japanese boy pursued by ancient gods and monsters, with voice work from Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara and Ralph Fiennes. Ω

Jim Lane’s cinema tsunami

S

ummer is generally the popcorn-movie season, with the expected franchise installments and few surprises. But every summer cinema tsunami has its share of unknown quantities; here are a few that I’m particularly looking forward to (reluctantly reserving the right to be disappointed), in order of their projected release dates: Genius (June 10): The title of this biopic is a multisided reference—it pertains not only to the central character, literary editor Max Perkins, but also to the writers he discovered and/or shepherded to immortality: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe, among others. With Colin Firth as Perkins, Jude Law as Wolfe, Guy Pearce as Fitzgerald, Dominic West as Hemingway, and with Nicole Kidman and Laura Linney as the women in their lives, this one has “class” written all over it. It doesn’t hurt that the writer is John Logan of Hugo, the last two James Bond pictures, and Showtime’s Penny Dreadful.

Finding Dory (June 17): Never mind The Good Dinosaur—as a rule, you can’t go wrong with Pixar.

And never mind Cars 2—as a rule, Pixar knows how to do sequels. The clincher here—besides the fact that we’ll be reunited with that endearingly forgetful fish voiced by Ellen DeGeneres—is the participation of Andrew Stanton. Stanton was in (or shared) the driver’s seat for Finding Nemo, Wall-E, A Bug’s Life, and all three Toy Story pictures; as much as anyone this side of Pixar’s head honcho John Lasseter, Stanton has the Midas touch.

Swiss Army Man (July 1): This one made a controversial splash at this year’s Sundance; at the screening people were walking out in droves—then the picture won a directing award for writerdirectors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. It stars Paul Dano as a man marooned on a desert island and Daniel Radcliffe as a corpse that washes up

on the beach and helps him find his way back to civilization. Say what? Yeah. The trailers give me a sneaking hunch what it’s all about—but it could surprise me. Besides, any movie that rattles so many cages in Park City and on Metacritic goes on my this-I-gotta-see list.

Tulip Fever (July 15): I haven’t read Deborah Moggach’s novel, but the setting is picturesque— Amsterdam during the Tulip Mania of the 1630s— and the talent lavished on the movie is downright mouthwatering: written by Tom Stoppard, arguably the greatest living playwright in the English language, and a cast that includes Alicia Vikander, Christoph Waltz, Judi Dench, Holliday Grainger and Jack O’Connell. And since the story involves the young wife (Vikander) of an older husband (Waltz) who falls in love with an artist (Dane DeHaan) hired to paint her portrait, the movie has a playful pun in the title: Two-Lip Fever. The pun is Moggach’s, but the presence of Stoppard suggest there’s more wordplay where that came from.

Florence Foster Jenkins (August 12): The eponymous Mrs. Jenkins (1868-1944) was renowned in her day—if that’s the right word—as the worst singer who ever lived, and there are recordings on YouTube to this day supporting that assessment.

Nevertheless, she was devoted to her, ahem, art, which made her sort of the Ed Wood of classical music. That seems to be the tack taken by the forthcoming movie, with Meryl Streep as Mrs. Jenkins and Hugh Grant as her devoted manager and second husband. Throw in the adventurous Stephen Frears in the director’s chair. Ω

Summer at the drive-in round up the family for a night of cinema, cool air and nostalgia

The drive-in is a bangfor-buck bargain for families.

The central structure of the West Wind Sacramento 6 Drive-In houses an entombed circular snack bar, a six-pronged projection booth and a lot more driving games than one might expect. Surrounded by limp, paintscratched chains, copious pavement scars and a sad row of swings, it’s one of the most unattractive and yet strangely comforting sights imaginable, a remnant from the past shuffling with zombie-like unawareness through our present.

One the last few hundred operating drive-ins in the world, the Sacramento 6 feels like an old friend, in that you not only excuse its flaws, you embrace them as strengths. I grew up near the Sacramento 6, on the other side of Folsom Boulevard, but my parents never took us, probably because drive-in culture was significantly less family-friendly than it is today. That long-unsatisfied enticement is probably the main reason that I have been occasionally obsessed with the drive-in as an adult, satisfied with muddy projection and screen obstructions even while growing into an increasingly snobby cinephilia.

But then there always seemed to be a sense of urgency to the pilgrimages, since the Sacramento 6 seems to be under constant threat of closure. There was a “final season” of contemporary classics back in 2004, scuttled plans for a luxury mall in 2007-08 and, always, talk of a doomsday end. I’ve been suckered into writing those “last picture show”-style epitaphs for various publications too many times. At this point, I’ll believe the Sacramento 6 is dead when I see it, and even then I’ll remain skeptical.

Under that perpetually dangling dagger, the Sacramento 6 experienced a minor resurgence.

Now operated by Syufy Enterprises subsidiary West Wind, the ol’ girl is probably cleaner and more lovingly maintained than at any time in the past two decades. Look past the dilapidated playground and broken picnic tables and crater-sized potholes, and you’ll see that the surrounding shrubbery has been pruned to prevent screen obstructions, the signage has been vastly improved and the snack bar sports a fresh coat of paint.

Compared to the theatrical experience, the drive-in is a bang-for-buck bargain for families, and still the best way for parents with small children to get out of the house and see a movie. Family caravans made up the bulk of the audience for our screening of The Jungle Book, all of them sporting pro-level equipment like folding chairs, ice coolers and multiple audio systems. Children poured out of minivans, while one family backed their truck toward the screen, then set up the bed with blankets and pillows.

This certainly wasn’t the ideal way to appreciate The Jungle Book, which is actually quite beautiful if overlong, and filled with state-ofthe-art digital effects. At the drive-in, the image appeared murky and occasionally unreadable, especially during the night sequences, while latecomers shined fiery headlights onto the screen and into our eyes. And yet with the cool night air on our faces and contraband beers in our hands, it felt like the ideal way to appreciate just about any movie, and that’s the enduring magic of the drive-in. Ω

Famous fish tacos: Coconut’s Fish Cafe opened in Sacramento last week (1420 16th Street, in the short-lived Noodles & Company spot) with a lot of accolades. Its original location in Maui earned an excellent Zagat score of 27, and its fish taco gets national buzz for its use of 17 ingredients, seven layers of texture and tropical flavor profile.

First thing to note: Coconut’s Fish Cafe is not like L&L Hawaiian BBQ. Meals don’t come in Styrofoam with macaroni salad and steamed jasmine rice. Sure, the tables resemble surfboards, and the servers wear purple leis, and there are proud photos everywhere of turtles and surfers and waterfalls and rainbows and sunsets, but it

all feels tasteful. It’s also quite a bit more expensive than your usual Hawaiian fast-food spot. Expect to spend $10-$15 for most of its seafood-focused meals.

For $10.99, you get two of these famous fish tacos. That may sound a little steep, but they’re enormous and filling. The stars are the tender, moist cubes of mahi mahi and ono; coleslaw treated with coconut milk and wasabi; and sweet mango salsa.

Best fish tacos I’ve ever had? Well, I’m partial to the Baja style, but Coconut’s definitely isn’t kidding around.

Calling burger junkies: Fairfield gourmet burger joint Monsoon Burgers (4740 Natomas Boulevard, Suite 130) opened in what used to

be a Natomas video game store last month. Its burger-centric offerings range from about $7 to $11, depending on size and toppings, as well as a few hot dogs. Can’t decide? Try the NOLA ($8.79$9.49), a burger topped with half of a Louisiana hot link.

More pupusas: El Izote (5650 Power Inn Road) just opened, bringing Sacramento another Salvadoran option. That means lots of pupusas ($2.99) as well as Salvadoran main dishes, such as beef stew ($11.99), roast chicken ($10.99) and grilled shrimp ($12.99). Like other Sacramento Salvadoran spots, El Izote also serves Mexican food.

Sushi alert: West Sacramento all-you-can-eat sushi favorite Raku Sushi recently moved. Don’t fret—it literally just went across the street, to 805 Harbor Boulevard.

Now, fans can enjoy more space and presumably less lengthy wait times. The Roseville location is safe and sound in its same building. Ω

Is Baron Stelling Hawaiian? Nope, but you wouldn’t know it based off of the bartender’s amazing flair for tiki drinks, first evidenced at Hock Farm and now at Paragary’s.

Try his Stag Savior ($12), which recently earned him the title of 2016’s Star of the Bar after a national competition in Chicago.

The creative, deeply amber cocktail combines Jägermeister, gin, apricot liqueur, grenadine, lime, aromatic bitters and absinthe.

With no rum nor fruit juice, it doesn’t exactly sound like something from Trader Vic’s. Yet, the nuanced, longlasting finish tastes totally tropical, like a pineapple gummy bear.1401 28th Street, www.paragarys.com.

Feeling blue BlueBerries Blueberries aren’t an iconic California crop, but we do grow them in the valley and the foothills. Find pickyour-own farms near Placerville for a berry cornuco cornucopia. These antioxidant power fruits are great in practically everything: cereal, baked goods, salsas, jams, pies and salads. Gulp them for a midday snack, smother your pancakes in warm blueberry compote or toss them frozen into lemonade and cocktails. Seek out tiny, wild, varieties for intense flavor. Or, look to Sierra Cascade Blueberry Farm near Chico, a producer that grows larger cultivated berries.

Hola, tacos By now, you may have heard that the Food Literacy Center is teaming up with the guy behind the immensely popular Sacramento Burger Battle to put on a taco festival on Tuesday, October 4. Don’t confuse it with the third annual Sacramento Taco Festival, though, which takes place Saturday, June 4. The family-friendly fun goes from noon to 6:30 p.m. on Del Paso Boulevard between El Camino Avenue and Arden Way. Apart from lots of taco vendors being present, there will also be a few competitions. See the crowning of a taco-eating champion, most unique sombrero wearer and even best-dressed chihuahua. For the taco makers, there’s an esteemed critic’s choice award. Doughnut hole-in-the-wall getaway

by Shoka Summer break is a great excuse to get out of town, and Pepples Donut Farm in Oakland is a sweet excuse to eat doughnuts. The hole-in-thewall (6037 San Pablo Avenue) with the agrarian name conjures an image of pastel-iced rings sprouting from rows of earth with a luminous rainbow backdrop and an overalls-clad panda harvesting the all-organic, vegan crop of lavender Earl Grey, Mexican chocolate, salted caramel, whiskey-tangerine fig and roasted red chili doughnuts.

Even people who admit they “don’t even know what it means for a donut to be vegan,” such as Yelp reviewer Meredith W. from Austin, Texas, conceded “these donuts were effing GOOD.” She seemed to love it, although she did also say, “Dickheads love this place.” Aw, be nicer to yourself, Meredith. Pepples also offers savory eats to balance out the sweet with an elusive vegan brunch, including biscuits with mushroom gravy, buffalo cauliflower and breakfast burritos.

One time, I spent $7 on toast. And I became obsessed.

This particular piece of toast arrived as a thick, chewy slice of housemade brioche—with edges so buttery and crisp that they tasted like caramel—and thick smears of freshly made ricotta and strawberryrose-geranium jam. It required a fork and knife.

The artisanal toast trend became nationally famous—and ridiculed over its price tag—after a Pacific Standard article about its San Francisco origins went viral in early 2014. Later that year, the New Yorker published a think piece calling toast the ultimate representation of our “intensifying obsession and fetishization of food.” Now, toast is featured on menus at fancy restaurants and hipster cafes across the country.

At last, Sacramentans can spend $6.50 on toast, thanks to Vibe Health Bar in Oak Park. If you weren’t thinking it before, you might as well shout it out now: “Hello, gentrification!”

Vibe’s toast is avocado toast, a subtrend that’s basically taken over the original trend. Vibe gives you whole-grain bread topped with a delightful—and remarkably vegan—pistachio pesto, mixed greens, thin slices of avocado and red pepper flakes. It’s tasty, of course. But the bread is so thin, with such a skimpy portion of avocado, that I am left pining after that $7 toast I ate that one time in Los Angeles.

Toast can be a magical, craveable thing. But the Vibe toast just seems to ride the trend without offering anything you can’t make in your own kitchen.

That’s more or less the Vibe experience: yummy, healthy, somewhat pricey food that you might wish you cooked yourself.

Still, if you cooked for yourself, you wouldn’t get the full vibe at Vibe, including its bright, relaxing décor. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of a very particular type of Los Angeles cafe—the ones with new age-y quotes on the walls, succulents on the tables and $6 cups of coffee injected with grass-fed butter and MCT oil.

Much of Vibe’s menu is made up of smoothies and acai bowls, which are expertly balanced and, in the case of the acai bowls, primed for Instagram. I especially enjoyed the refreshing and sunny City of Trees ($7.50), a blend of kale, pineapple, mango, jalapeño, basil, goji berry, ginger and coconut water; and the neon pink Dragon Bowl ($11), a tropical blend of pitaya—also known as dragon fruit—and pineapple, topped with sliced banana, crunchy granola, dried goji berries, floral honey and coconut flakes.

If this is all sounding very veganhippie to you, note that Vibe does offer some meals with chicken, though I didn’t find them as satisfying as Vibe’s veggie-centric offerings.

The chicken wrap ($11) is the least successful item on the menu, mostly due to a Paleo barbecue sauce that resembles a mildly spiced, jarred marinara. The Mediterranean Mama ($8) quinoa bowl showcases Vibe’s pesto skills again, but it’s quite clumpy in this preparation, and its inclusion of chicken breast feels like an afterthought.

Instead, go for the Root Awakening ($9), a wrap that sounds too healthy for its own good but surprises you with brilliant flavor, largely thanks to an ethereally smooth ginger-beet hummus. There’s also quinoa, fermented veggies and carrots, all packaged up into a sturdy collard leaf. Throw in a smoothie and you’ve got yourself a feel-good lunch. Ω

Sacramento boasted several beautiful theaters in the late 1800s—all long since fallen to the wrecking ball.

However, in downtown Woodland, there’s still an ornate 19th-century theater that now sustains the glory of that bygone era. The Woodland Opera House originally opened in 1885, only to burn down in 1892. The theater was rebuilt, opening its doors again in 1896. From that point, it became an entertainment draw for hundreds of vaudeville acts that arrived by train.

When the growing popularity of silent films made vaudeville unprofitable, the Woodland Opera House was boarded up in 1913, and gradually fell into disrepair.

Six decades later, an effort to save the building began in the 1970s. Angela Baltezore, now the executive director of the Woodland Opera House, remembers performing there as a student in 1975.

“The leaky roof had been fixed, but the theater was very, very dusty, and most of the original seats were broken,” she says of that era. “It was an adventure.”

By 1989, some $2 million in restoration work had been completed, and the Woodland Opera House officially relaunched. The building is now owned by the California State Parks system and run by a Woodland nonprofit. It regularly hosts community theater and concert performances, education programs and school field trips.

On Tuesdays, there are backstage tours. Visitors can experience old-school sound effects like a

“wind machine” (a hand-cranked cylinder rubbing against tight canvas) and check out the dressing rooms, where century-old graffiti and handbills have been preserved. Also on the tour: three trapdoors that allow actors to “pop up” on stage. There are sobering reminders, too, of the era in which the opera house came to be, including an old poster promoting a minstrel show, with dancers performing in blackface.

On the lighter side of history, the opera house has long been thought to be haunted. Some folks say there is a ghost—the spirit of a firefighter who perished in the 1892 blaze.

“Sometimes ‘ghost hunters’ are permitted to stay in the opera house overnight, hoping to get a glimpse,” Baltezore says.

Today, the historic auditorium has 250 comfortable seats downstairs, and approximately another 250 people can be seated on spartan, pew-like benches in the balcony. That’s more seating than you’ll find at the B Street Theatre, Sacramento Theatre Company or Capital Stage—and Woodland had only 3,000 residents when the Opera House was built. The space does not go to waste. Recent opera house performances of West Side Story and a dance recital drew capacity crowds, for example.

This month, new theatrical lighting will be installed—the lights that went in during the 1980s restoration failed during this spring’s production of Romeo and Juliet.

“We’re still raising money,” Baltezore says.

While the living-history atmosphere of the opera house is priceless, producing shows in a restored 19th-century venue is challenging, Baltezore adds.

So much talent and preparation have gone into the B Street Theatre’s production of Mud Blue Sky that it’s a

What starts out as a sharp, snarky comedy about a reunion of three flight attendants in a motel room during a layover too soon loses focus. The Lobster To be, or not to be, a lobster.

The Lobster is the latest movie, and the first in English, by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos.

Colin Farrell plays David, a recently divorced schlub in a society where singlehood is not tolerated. David must report to a singles resort, where he has 45 days to find a life partner; if he fails, he will be turned into an animal. David tells the hotel’s manager (Olivia Colman) that his choice, if it should come to that, is to become a lobster.

David can postpone the deadline on the resort’s daily hunts, combing the woods looking for “Loners” who have escaped the hotel or otherwise eluded the sterile society of the city. They shoot the Loners with tranquilizer darts, hauling them back to the hotel to meet their fate.

For each Loner they bag, residents add a day to their stay.

After a failed attempt to pair with someone identified only as Heartless Woman (Angeliki Papoulia), David escapes into the woods and joins the Loners, whose leader (Léa Seydoux) enforces celibate isolation as brutally as society does pairing off. In this situation, David is drawn to a ShortSighted Woman (she doesn’t get a name either) played by Rachel Weisz, who is likewise drawn to him. Why the two of them couldn’t simply hook up and report back to the hotel, announcing that they’d found each other, is a question never addressed in Lanthimos and Efthymis Filippou’s script; their point seems to be that David is first damned when he doesn’t, then damned when he does.

Is David living in a cruel society, or are we simply watching a cruel movie? The Lobster begins with an act of unexplained violence— a woman stalks out into a field and shoots a donkey dead. Then Lanthimos settles into a rhythm of relentless tedium punctuated by similar moments of cruelty—usually to animals but sometimes to people. (Or maybe, given the premise, to both.)

Except for David, characters don’t have names, or even personalities, only single defining characteristics—John C. Reilly as Lisping Man, Ben Whishaw as Limping Man, Jessica Barden as Nosebleed Woman. When workshop presenters at the hotel demonstrate the difference between singlehood and coupledom, one looks as unappealing as the other. Even when David and his Loner mate supposedly fall in love, there’s no tenderness or even fleeting joy, not for a moment (although Weisz somehow manages to sneak a couple of half-smiles past her watchful director). David and the woman never really have anything, so they never have anything to lose.

The Lobster has everything we look for in a satire except the one thing it must have: a lively wit. Without wit, satire is merely meanness of spirit; without liveliness, it’s just hectoring.

David may contemplate becoming a lobster, but Lanthimos has already made him a boar. Ω

Alice Through the Looking Glass

Captain Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns from a sea voyage to find herself aced out of her command by an ex-suitor (Leo Bill). Worse, her old friend the Hatter (Johnny Depp) is in trouble, and Alice must go time-hopping through Wonderland to save him. Only scattered shreds of Lewis Carroll survive in Linda Woolverton’s neofeminist screenplay, so don’t rely on this if you have to do a book report. And the movie is top-heavy with CGI, like icing on a gaudy wedding cake.

But under that vulgar exterior beats the heart of spirited fantasy adventure, directed with buoyant panache by James Bobin and with a high-powered cast (Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Rhys Ifans, Timothy Spall, Matt Lucas, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen) under layers of makeup and computer enhancement. The Angry Birds Movie

What’s worse than a video game-inspired movie? A video gameinspired animated feature. If you’ve played the game, you know the story: A bunch of wingless birds fire a giant slingshot in an effort to get their eggs back from an army of green pigs. Somehow it took four writers (John Cohen, Mikael Hed, Mikko Pöllä and Jon Vitti) to come up with this. Meanwhile, it seems not to have occurred to director Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly—or anybody else—that what’s cute and amusing on a smartphone might look trivial, cheap and shoddy on a theater screen—to say nothing of the 3-D. Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader and Peter Dinklage head the voice cast. It’s harmless enough, as junk goes, but why blow 10 bucks on it when the app is only 99 cents—and you get to play? J.L.

Love & Friendship

To hell with Terrence Malick’s increasingly masturbatory career second act; I’m a lot more excited about Whit Stillman 2.0. After a decade-plus absence from features, the Metropolitan director returned in 2012 with the likable Greta Gerwig vehicle Damsels in Distress, and now delivers the delightful Love & Friendship, arguably his most accomplished and assured movie to date.

An adaptation of Jane Austen’s novella Lady Susan, and Stillman’s first foray into noncontemporary storytelling, Love & Friendship stars Kate Beckinsale as a resourceful and manipulative widow who straddles and connives her way through bourgeois society. There is an almost perfect overlap between the sensibilities of Stillman and Austen, to the point that all of Stillman’s previous New York-based films now feel like reverse-engineered Austen adaptations.

Beckinsale is excellent as the pragmatically lusty Lady Susan, wrapping every blockhead man around her finger and coiling her tongue through the deadpan barbs of Stillman’s script. D.B.

A Bigger Splash

Italian director Luca Guadagnino makes his English-language debut, as well as first narrative feature since 2009’s I Am Love, with the US Weekly art film A Bigger Splash.

I Am Love star Tilda Swinton headlines as a Bowie-esque rocker whose post-surgery recuperation with her younger boyfriend (Matthias Schoenaerts) gets interrupted by the arrival of an influential ex (Ralph Fiennes) and his sexpot daughter (Dakota Johnson). A Bigger Splash is not nearly as lush and palatial as I Am Love, but it’s just as chilly and stylish and thin, an overinflated genre film highly dependent on magnetic performances to hold it together. Swinton is up to the task, regal and needy and detached in the same breath, just like a superstar, and so is a heedless Fiennes as a music industry sybarite still bragging about his contributions to one of the Rolling Stones’ worst albums; Schnoenaerts and Johnson, not so much. Dark Horse

Documentarian Louise Osmond retraces the underdog career of the British racehorse Dream Alliance, which enjoyed an entirely creditable racing career 2004-2012, despite unexceptional genes and the fact that it was sponsored by a consortium of working-class neighbors in a depressed Welsh mining town. Osmond mixes talking-head interviews with the Dream’s owners and hometown fans (a warmly down-to-earth bunch of folks), archival news footage, home video and discreet reenactments to weave a heartwarming and crowd-pleasing story. The interviewees are the main attraction, especially breeder Jan Vokes and her husband Daisy (a nickname), but a surprisingly vivid presence is Dream Alliance himself, who comes off as a scrappy animal with a gamely competitive spirit and a lot of horse sense (no pun intended). Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

The married couple from 2014’s Neighbors (Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne) are having trouble again, this time with a new

sorority led by a party-hearty fugitive (Chloë Grace Moretz) from a group of smug little prisses. Neighbors was a guilty pleasure; in the sequel it’s guilt 10, pleasure zero. This is a movie for people who thought The Hangover was too subtle and genteel. Director Nicholas Stoller and four co-writers (Andrew J. Cohen, Brendan O’Brien, Evan Goldberg and Rogen) throw logic to the winds, and they’ll do anything for a laugh—anything, that is, except actually be funny. Zac Efron also gets sucked into the morass, and Kelsey Grammer, Selena Gomez, Lisa Kudrow, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and LL Cool J drop by for pointless cameos; they’re not funny either. “Rogen Sinking” would be a better subtitle. J.L.

of revenge against the Auschwitz butcher who murdered his entire family. Zev scrawls notes on his body in order to assist with his periodic memory resets, while a shadowy figure from his past guides him towards the (not very) shocking truth. In other words, this is basically a non-backward Memento with Alzheimer’s and Nazis, informed more by Canadian director Atom Egoyan’s careerlong obsession with coping mechanisms in response to unspeakable tragedy than by concerns about momentum and suspense.

Plummer does fine work in the lead role, but the supporting players tend to go way overthe-top, especially Dean Norris as a neo-Nazi cop. D.B.

The Nice Guys

A thug for hire (Russell Crowe) breaks the arm of a private eye (Ryan Gosling) to discourage him from finding the thug’s young-woman-on-the-run client—then decides she needs help after all, and convinces the gumshoe to team up to find and protect her. Director Shane Black and his co-writer Anthony Bagarozzi produce a highly enjoyable companion piece to Black’s equally enjoyable but sadly ignored Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), another trigger-happy comedy about two mismatched detectives unraveling a hilariously complicated mystery. Crowe and Gosling make a good bottom-feeding team (Gosling especially shows a surprising flair for physical comedy), and setting the movie in smoggy 1970s LA evokes nostalgic memories of TV’s The Rockford Files. Newcomer Angourie Rice shines as Gosling’s precocious daughter. J.L.

X-Men: Apocalypse

The Netflix-ification of the blockbuster cinema-scape continues apace with Bryan Singer’s tolerable but disposable installment X-Men: Apocalypse. After the inane timeline-hopping of his 2014 feature-length episode Days of Future Past, Singer settles on the dorkiest timeline with Apocalypse, resurrecting a purple dildo-shaped god (Oscar Isaac, overqualified) and satisfying his own career-long Nazi fetish in the bargain. But the only thing that really matters is that the Marvel machine keeps chugging, and so Apocalypse peddles 144 minutes of pure, uncut franchise maintenance, dutifully serving as an anonymous chapter in a never-ending story. In addition to resolving the Apocalypse storyline and following any number of nostalgia-born narrative detours, Singer is also tasked with introducing a new cast of Muppet Babies character reboots. The film’s Godzilla-like ability to assemble and completely waste a legendary ensemble cast would be impressive if it weren’t emblematic of a Hollywood apocalypse, one of its own design. D.B.

Prime for the prim: In its fourth year, BottleRock Napa Valley felt settled down.

After a turbulent, debt-inducing first year, promoter Latitude 38 took over the festival and, over the next two editions, massaged BottleRockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s identity into one synonymous with Napa itself. Now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to think long term: BottleRock recently signed on with its venue Napa Valley Expo for 10 more years.

Compared to other major music festivalsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and at a complete sellout with approximately 120,000 attendees, it definitely qualifies as majorâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; BottleRock feels more cushy, bougie and relaxed. There are the finest of fine wines, a super-elite $3,000 VIP program, celebrity chef demos and an easy-to-navigate setting with shady patches of artificial grass. The crowd leans older, with more families, and whiter, with an absurd number of perfectly coiffed blond women in high heels. Even the BottleRock camp-

grounds included huge mirrors and outlets for hair curlers, straighteners and makeup sessions.

And the lineup aptly reflected the scene, with old-school greats like Stevie Wonder and Buddy Guy, as well as current radio hit-makers like Grouplove and Walk the Moon.

Opening day saw a fantastic early set by Oaklandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fantastic Negrito, the blues singer who won last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NPR Tiny Desk Concert Contest. With a powerful presence and infectious enthusiasm, he seems poised to blow up any day now. On the flip side, Cold War Kids delivered a fairly lackluster performance to a crowd who, to be fair, really only wanted to hear â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hang Me Up To Dry.â&#x20AC;?

Stevie Wonder capped it off with a set of feel-good hitsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;â&#x20AC;&#x153;Signed, Sealed, Delivered,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Higher Ground,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;My Cherie Amourâ&#x20AC;?â&#x20AC;&#x201D;and charming quirkiness. For example, he insisted on being called â&#x20AC;&#x153;DJ Chick Chick Boom.â&#x20AC;? The audience played along, and Wonder proceeded to deejay. It became a tribute to those who have recently passedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Prince, David Bowie, Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fireâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and felt worthy, though far too long. Folks fled when the singalong to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hotel Californiaâ&#x20AC;? broke out, while the remaining spectators were eventually rewarded with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Superstition.â&#x20AC;?

Wonder also weaved politics into his set: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Please remember, you decide the future in your hands. â&#x20AC;Ś Prejudice and hate is unacceptable.â&#x20AC;? Toward the end of his set, he clarified his position: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Personally, I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time for a woman, but do what you gotta do.â&#x20AC;?

On Saturday, the smallest stage saw a gem in Son Little, a Philadelphia-based neo-soul artist.

He doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite fall in line with the revivalist movement led by Sharon Jones and Leon Bridges, rather, Son Little sounds more gritty, bluesy and experimental. On quieter, practically a capella songs like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lay Me Down,â&#x20AC;? his raw voice silenced the shadedwellers nearby.

On the main stage, Death Cab for Cutie drew a massive crowd, though many seemed disappointed to learn the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;90s-born band has, in fact, written new material since Plans. Regardless, the indie bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance paled in comparison to the almighty, theatrical Florence + the Machine.

With her long, red hair and flowy, golden gown, singer Florence Welch looked like a fairy princess prancing back and forth across the stage. From the outfit to the glittery backdrop to the warm backlighting, every moment was seamlessly choreographed and aestheticized. During â&#x20AC;&#x153;Delilah,â&#x20AC;? off her Grammy-nominated album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, Welch thrashed around to strobe lights, transforming into a self-possessed ghost haunting us all. During the thundering â&#x20AC;&#x153;What Kind of Man,â&#x20AC;? her silhouette dramatically beat itself until it fell to the floor.

The festival closed on Sunday with a memorable set by gypsy-punk outfit Gogol Bordello, so frenzied and raucous that a few proper folks got dragged into quite possibly the festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only mosh pit. The Lumineers delivered the stomps and claps with their massive hit â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ho Hey,â&#x20AC;? before headliner Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers sounded in fine form, particularly considering singer Anthony Kiedisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; recent health problems. He was hospitalized earlier in May with intestinal flu, canceling a performance just two weeks before BottleRock. No matter how he sounded, fans were stoked to see him at all.

Country Joe McDonald has been releasing records since well before most SN&R readers were even born. For those who look to their elders for inspiration, this is one show no music fan should miss. He’ll be honoring the late Woody Guthrie in a night FOLK appropriately dubbed “A one-man show of story and song” and playing many timeless and time-appropriate songs that filled the hearts of both the common working man and Guthrie’s fans alike. Tim Heidecker puts an amusing spin on everyday domestic issues in his newly released album In Glendale. Backed by his 10-piece band, Heidecker sings about relatable everyday experiences, like cleaning up dog shit, calling in sick to work and the allure of central air. Existential woes that befall most middle-aged ROCK people are also covered, like not wanting to wake up dead. Nevertheless, even though these tunes don’t come anywhere near the weirdness of some of his other comedy (such as Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!), the simple rock beats and catchy lyrics are a fun listen. 2708 J Street, www.timheidecker.com.

naked lounge, 8 p.m., $10 Between the Moon and the Midwest is the record in which cosmic-country singersongwriter Austin Lucas gets brave. The album, which was released ALT-COunTRy this past February, is everything that his critically acclaimed country-rock record Stay Reckless is, and more. He previously touched on the pain of his divorce via fictitious characters, but on the new record, he digs deep and gets blunt, and even sings about his crippling anxiety and depression. Though 23-year-old singer-songwriter Xochitl was a toddler during the heydey of ’90s and early-aught singers like Natalie Imbruglia and Shawn Colvin, and she cites more contemporary artists like Jason Mraz and Sara Bareilles as primary influences, that coffee-shop-songstress vibe of decades ago seems to have reached her through osmosis in her early years. The Sacramento native’s songbird vocals match equally sweet lyrics, and the SInGER-SOnGWRITER April release of her latest EP, What I’ve Become, shows everexpanding promise. Samantha Sharp and Lauren Crosby open up the show.

Fans of Death, Nocturnus, Pestilence or other like-minded and technically DEATH METAL challenging death-metal fare should come out en masse. The hip-hop artist known for songs like “Because I Got High,” “Tumbleweed” and “Palmdale” keeps churning out new tunes and touring the country on the power of Colt 45, two Zig-Zags and HIP-HOP his double-neck guitar. And although the fun-loving, marijuana-smoking artist may come off as the guy you want to party with, his arrest last February for assaulting a woman who danced on stage may have fans singing another tune.

Hard to believe A$AP Ferg’s Trap Lord is nearly two years old. Tracks like “Hood Pope,” “Shabba” and “Didn’t Wanna Do That” still sound jarring and alive with paranoia. His follow-up, Always Strive and Prosper, is a far different Ferg; some might say it panders to EDM and true schoolers. It conflicts with our understanding of Ferg, even though “Psycho” knocks like a classic Boot Camp HIP-HOP Clique cut. Still, tracks like “New Level” and “Yammy Gang” will make security nervous from the mosh potential. Take it or leave it, Tory Lanez is along for the night.

When discussing San Francisco’s Kendra McKinley, St. Vincent comparisons abound.

McKinley’s sound is far more ’60s INDIE inspired, with some bossa nova and tribal notes creeping through her psychedelic pop, and St. Vincent’s characteristic spacey guitar lines are absent. But the pair share a commitment to intricacy and artistry, which is abundantly clear based on the previews we’ve heard for McKinley’s upcoming sophomore record, Treat. Already, there’s a pervasive retro aesthetic and badass eyeliner application. Can I get an update on the Legislature? They seem to be hella busy lately.

—Eric You are correct. The Legislature has been working hella hard to get a bunch of bills out of suspense. A bill being held “in suspense”? They make it sounds so … suspenseful. “What’s gonna happen? Who knows? We will let you know right after this commercial.” Anyway, there were a bunch of bills about marijuana in the suspense file. Which bills lived and which bills died? I have a list of winners: Assembly Bill 1575, D-Rob Bonta, Oakland: This is what’s known as a “cleanup” bill. The idea is to fix a few things from the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act. AB 2516, D-Jim Wood, Eureka: This bill creates a new, smaller state license for medical-marijuana growers. This new license would be known as a “Type 1C”, or “specialty cottage,” license. Type 1C growers would be allowed to cultivate 2,500 square feet or less of total canopy size for mixed-light cultivation, up to 25 plants for outdoor cultivation, or 500 square feet or less of total canopy size for indoor cultivation.

AB 2243, Wood: More taxes. This one is about restrictions on growth and production for cannabis distributors.

Senate Bill 987, D-Mike McGuire, Healdsburg: Even more taxes.

One bill not going to the ball this year is AB 2740, by D-Evan Low, Campbell. This bill would have made it illegal to drive with a small amount of THC in one’s bloodstream. It’s a good thing this bill failed, because studies have shown that, arguably, stoned drivers aren’t a high risk.

I like AB 1575 and AB 2516, but the two tax bills need to go away. There is no reason to start imposing taxes before the Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation—the BuMMR—has even figured out what the market will bear.

Keep in mind that medical-marijuana users already pay state sales tax and that many cities already impose an extra tax on top of that. Considering the fact that marijuana is the only medicine that people have to pay taxes on anyway, it seems like legislators are trying to kill the goose before it even starts to lay eggs.

Marijuana made about $50 million in taxes last year, and that’s just from the clubs that paid taxes. I expect the new BuMMR regulations will lead to increased revenue, especially as towns that used to be against medical cannabis start allowing cultivators and dispensaries in their jurisdictions.

Speaking of taxes, Sacramento voters will have a chance to vote on Measure Y, a proposed 5 percent tax on commercial growers.

The money will go to a special children’s fund. This is a good idea, but you see what I am saying about politicians expecting marijuana to pay for just about everything. Ω

Chewy chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies especially bring me back to my childhood of scrounging for batter licks. heads are our constant companions. They fill our inner sanctuary with streams of manic commentary. Often we’re not fully cognizant of the bedlam, since the outer world dominates our focus. But as soon as we close our eyes and turn our attention inward, we’re immersed in the jabbering babble. That’s the bad news, Aries. Now here’s the good news. The really big screen In his 16 years as theater director at the Esquire IMAX Theater, the worst thing Doug Link has seen wasn’t the switch from film to digital, or even piles of vomit left by kids who couldn’t handle the combination of 3-D movie-induced motion sickness and snacks. No, the worst thing he’s seen was a really, really bad IMAX-produced movie about the first city in outer space. It isn’t all bad, though. With the switch from film to digital, Link has gone from having to manage a room filled with 4-by-4-inch spools of film to just pressing a button.

What were some of the initial difficulties switching over from film to digital?

Not many, really. It’s definitely a lot easier, because, I mean, I can run this projector now with a little bit of training.

It’s basically hitting some buttons on a control panel, whereas I could not run the old film projector. There was a lot of detail and skill involved in that.

Do you ever miss projecting film, rather than digital?

You know, I do. When that projector ran, there was a hum in the building. I mean, it sounded like a Volkswagen was running.

But at the same time, when the hum is running, you’re just waiting for it to throw a rod or something to happen. … But there was something cool about watching the old projector just doing its thing and cruising. But, we definitely had way more mechanical issues with the film projection than the digital.

If you wanted to run a movie on film just for fun, could you still do it?

Yeah, we could do it. There are still some film directors, Christopher Nolan is one in particular, who loves showing movies on film. When Nolan did the Dark Knight a few years ago, IMAX promised him that they would play it in so many theaters on film. We had the digital projector, but we ran it on film because of the commitment we made to Nolan. And, the film aspect ratio is a little bit larger—about 28 percent larger—image that you get on screen. When something is filmed with an IMAX camera, a 15-70 mm camera, and projected on a 15-70 mm piece of film, the whole frame is filled with the image, which covers the entire screen.

When you take a 35 mm image and you try to blow it up onto IMAX, you get this letterbox effect.

When did you guys completely switch over to digital?

Well, we installed our digital projection system in September of 2014. I ran my old film projector until 5 months ago for school groups. A lot of the film that we had, they hadn’t transferred movies like [Adventures in] Wild California—which we do 10,000 kids a year with Wild California for school groups—as digitally remastered.

I remember seeing that and Under the Sea growing up. I’ve always wondered, why are there so many documentaries in 3-D? Well, let’s step back a little bit.

Documentaries are usually a little bit shorter film. That played well with IMAX, because for a long time, we were limited to films under an hour long. … Also, with the size of our screen and the size of our film frame, it’s a wide, expansive image and it plays really well for nature films and outdoor things.

How many people end up throwing up in the movie theater?

(Laughs.) In the 16 years that we’ve been open, we’ve had maybe five or six people throw up. Four of them have made it out of the theater and made it to the bathroom. Two have not. Most of them were kids. But if someone wasn’t feeling good and they made it to the bathroom and we didn’t know it happened, then it didn’t really happen.

But what I know we’ve had to clean up several times. It can definitely mess with your equilibrium a little bit, but it’s not a common thing.

Do you ever watch movies from the projection room?

Yeah, but nothing is ever as good when you’re watching in through the projection booth, because you don’t have the benefit of the sound system.

So, I didn’t get a chance to see the new Star Wars here.

We were the fifth highest-grossing theater in North America for Star Wars.

Which is amazing because we’re like the 17th-biggest demographic market.

Safe to assume you watched Star Wars here, then?

Yeah, I watched it five times.

Are there any movies you guys have shown that you didn’t like at all?

There have been some really bad traditional IMAX films. Probably the worst movie I ever saw was a traditional IMAX film called L5: First City in Space. It was horrible. Horrible. Horrible. Horrible.

IMAX tried to make a 45-minute film out of the ballet of The Nutcracker. How do you cut The Nutcracker down into a 45-minute movie? That was really bad. Ω
