One less voice On Sunday, April 24—just one day after he took part in a televised mayoral debate—Russell Rawlings dropped out of the race and announced his support behind former rival candidate Darrell Steinberg.

Too bad. Rawlings’ departure means one less voice for Sacramento’s underserved.

That’s not because Rawlings necessarily stood a Bernie’s chance in hell.

Rather, it’s because his scrappy campaign elevated the political conversation to new, more humane heights.

In a Facebook message posted Sunday, Rawlings touted what he’d gained as part of the political process.

“I … have been able to champion the issues I didn’t feel were being adequately addressed by our city— homelessness, affordable housing, public transportation and empowering our neighborhoods.”

Now, he says, he’s looking to Steinberg to carry on the cause. “The most important thing to me is ensuring these issues have a true champion and leader who will not only work on them but who can also shift the culture of City Hall,” he wrote. “I believe Darrell Steinberg is that leader.”

Here’s hoping—but although the former city councilman voted against the anti-camping ordinance in 1995, Steinberg avoided saying he’d actually seek to repeal it. Meanwhile, his two remaining rivals, Tony Lopez and Angelique Ashby, have both publicly stated their support for it.

Don’t let Rawlings’ exit from the race signal the turning point in which the city’s disenfranchised find themselves down one less empowered supporter. With Rawlings’ endorsement, it’s time for Steinberg to take a stronger, more compassionate stand.

I was just figuring things out. When I rode the first time without the training wheels, I rode right into a car. That made an impact in more ways than one.

I was 5 and I still ride to this day, a mountain and road bike. My first real bike was a BMX Redline.

It had red accents and everything, from my father for Christmas. That’s why I ride a bike now, because I can remember getting on my bike and the expression on my face. I can emulate that now.

My grandparents bought me a bicycle with training wheels for my fifth birthday.

It was purple, my favorite color, a Schwinn with a big banana seat. I had training wheels for a couple of months. I rode on gravel because my grandparents lived in Woodland on an almond orchard with gravel everywhere.

My dad taught me and I remember spinning in circles a lot. I just couldn’t figure out how to backpedal for braking at first. As I got older, my grandpa would take me on the bike trails during the spring and summer. When I see older adults and kids and bikes, it reminds a lot of my grandfather.

Not all of your readers spend their life consumed with weed. I grew out of that dead-head phase when I left high school. When I see some of my old high school friends and see them today, they’re still living at home with their parents, chasing that same old buzz back behind the high school, and you think, “what a waste.”

No sympathy Re “Right to relief” by Raheem F. Hosseini (SN&R Feature Story, April 21): Yet another article about homelessness in Sacramento. Enough already! As a Midtown resident of 22 years, it is impossible for me to walk in my neighborhood without having my path blocked by an unconscious homeless person sprawled out in the middle of the sidewalk. Although I do support the “Right to Rest” movement, it should not include deliberately blocking the path of pedestrians from using the sidewalk because sidewalks have been highjacked by homeless riff-raff as place to sleep or pass out from alcohol or drug-induced coma.

I pay an exorbitant amount of rent to live in Midtown. Just received yet another rent increase. I am now looking for a new place to live, and it will definitely not be in Midtown. It isn’t the high rents which are driving me out—it is the feces, urine, discarded old clothes and garbage which litter the entire neighborhood. All deposited by thoughtless homeless people. Yes, there is no place to go to the bathroom, but garbage cans are on every block in Midtown—so no excuses!

It is hard for me to have sympathy for homeless people if they deliberately dump their discarded crap all over my neighborhood.

Creating tiny house cottage encampments, legalizing outdoor camping and setting up free public bathrooms will not solve the problem of thoughtless homeless people who refuse to use garbage cans.

Chasing that buzz Re “The 420 Issue” (SN&R Feature, April 14): I have been a longtime reader of SN&R for its articles on local politics, music, arts, food and entertainment. But lately your paper is becoming a quick read and throwaway.

Not even keeping it long enough to line the kitty litter box. What’s with all the cannabis articles? This week’s paper is 68 pages and over half dealing with cannabis.

The increase in UC administrative overhead has out paced most other costs (of in the past few decades and they have so many arguably unnecessary expenses it’s kind of laughable. They won’t tighten their belt, they just keep raising fees and tuition. They are more worried about their reputation and image than serving students adequately.

A homeless win-lose situation City of Sacramento dropped charges against Right to Rest organizers—so why are activists disappointed?

In the first legal showdown between the city of Sacramento and leaders of the Right to Rest movement, it was the city that blinked.

Citing insufficient evidence, the city attorney’s office last Thursday rescinded its charges of unlawful camping against homeless activists James Lee “Faygo” Clark and David Andre, architects of a durable occupation outside of City Hall that lasted nearly three months before spawning a smaller 8 | SN&R | 04.28.16

version at the state Capitol. The charges were dismissed April 21, one day before the parties were to begin a trial with broader implications than the relatively minor infractions in question, and two days before the city’s mayoral frontrunners fielded questions on the topic during a televised debate.

Clark, 35, and Andre, 52, were both arrested multiple times while participating in the Right to Rest occupation that began this past December. The occupation was

organized to remonstrate the city for enforcing an ordinance that makes it illegal for homeless residents to sleep outdoors or possess survival gear like sleeping bags and blankets.

Violators of the local law face arrest, fines and jail time, as well as the confiscation of their belongings.

While technically the defendants in the case, Clark and Andre viewed it as an opportunity to put the city’s anti-camping ordinance on trial.

“Part of the reason we took this on was to get it repealed during a jury trial or appeal [the ruling] if we lost,” Clark told SN&R. “It’s a case they wouldn’t have been able to win.”

Before the city folded its hand, Clark says the plan was to argue the case on First Amendment grounds. The activists contend they have a protected right to protest against the ordinance, and that their civil disobedience can take the form of sleep since that’s what the law forbids.

And make no mistake—it is sleep that the law targets, which is made clear by Sacramento Police Department documents accompanying the complaints from the city attorney’s office.

According to police reports, officers arrested Clark and Andre during a “camping enforcement” deployment early the morning of February 26, around 3:30 a.m.

In one arresting officer’s report, a man later identified as Andre “was laying on top of a blue blanket and was wrapped in several other blankets.”

“The subject was actively sleeping,” the arresting officer writes. “The subject

The second arresting officer’s description of events involving Clark is similar. In his report, he says he observed a white male adult he recognized as Clark “sleeping on top of a green tarp and wrapped in multiple blankets,” and also concludes that the activity amounted to unlawful camping.

Clark has spent the past month recuperating from the effects of an eight-day hunger strike, which he undertook to compel the city to have its subcommittee on homelessness meet with actual homeless residents. The multiple arrests, jail stays, court proceedings and stress of preparing for a trial that never came left both physical and psychological marks, he said. “It’s a heavy toll.”

But Clark and Andre aren’t the only Right to Rest protesters who have been detained multiple times, only to have charges quietly dismissed or not filed at all, says Cres Vellucci, a coordinator for the local chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, which has been monitoring the protest.

His chapter has counted upward of 79 arrests or detentions involving at least 25 separate individuals who were part of the occupation. He says most had their charges dismissed.

SN&R was able to independently verify 21 arrests involving 13 individuals, but only had access to partial booking logs from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, covering January 24 to April 29.

Between those dates, authorities handed out at least 81 citations for unlawful camping, according to an SN&R analysis of records. (Records covering February 3-5 and February 16-18 were unavailable.) The Sacramento Police Department was responsible for 45 of them.

While local activists have long agitated against the two-decade-old ordinance, the movement quickly coalesced last summer, shortly after the U.S. Department of Justice released an opinion condemning local policies that make it illegal to sleep outside in communities without adequate shelter space.

“If a person literally has nowhere else to go, then enforcement of the anti-camping ordinance against that person criminalizes her for being homeless,” read the DOJ “statement of interest,” in part.

A Sacramento Superior Court spokeswoman told SN&R that the city attorney’s office filed a motion to dismiss the three cases against Clark and Andre “due to insufficient evidence.”

The separation of church and state is a fundamental tenet of the United States’ civic code. But things get a little murky when the state (or city, in this case), outsources management of its buildings.

Take, for instance, McKinley Park’s clunie community center, in which a Pentecostal Christian group called the Sanctuary Covenant Church holds weekly Sunday worship. Some nearby residents worry that the city of Sacramento—which owns the Clunie Center—is giving preferential treatment to the religious group.

But a public records request showed that the city has no control over the building’s rentals. They handed the Clunie Center’s reins over to nonprofit friends of east Sacramento in 2012 due to monetary constraints.

Neither the Sanctuary Covenant Church nor Friends of East Sacramento responded to SN&R by the time of its publication deadline about whether the church pays the Clunie Center’s usual fee of $150 per hour, or if Friends of East Sacramento would regularly rent the center out to religious organizations of any denomination. police aNd tHieveS Armed robbers and thieves ransacked homes and businesses around the city of Sacramento on Monday, including three shops that were burgled in close proximity in the north, according to online logs from the Sacramento Police Department.

There were four burglaries and four robberies in total—three of them involving brandished firearms, including one shortly after midnight near the corner of 21st and P streets, where a gun-toting suspect robbed multiple victims before escaping in a vehicle.

Authorities are investigating the above crimes, but did catch a break early that morning. Around 1:19 a.m., police interrupted a burglary in progress at a south Sacramento residence. According to online logs, arriving officers saw the described suspect vehicle start to leave the area, then stop, at which point an armed occupant exited and fled on foot.

According to the organization, the framework of the state’s textbooks misrepresents the Indian community by reinforcing stereotypes. The biggest focus, the organization says, is to help end the bullying of indian and Hindu students. In Sacramento County school districts, Asian-Americans, including Indians, account for nearly 32,000 K-12 students.

In May, the State Board of Education will hold a hearing to vote on changing several Indian references from textbooks, incuding substituting mentions of “India” with “South Asia.”

“The hearing is important on many levels, but mostly to prove that the state is making it a priority to correctly understand and accurately portray the cultural and religious heritage of its citizens,” Senior Director of the Hindu American Foundation Samir Kalra said in a statement. (Kris Hooks)

SN&R Back at bat The Oak Park Little League considers its future after a McClatchy Park shooting

An eerie quiet gripped McClatchy Park just minutes before game time for Oak Park Little League on April 19. Earlier in the day, league president Tomi Gomez had met with City Councilman Jay Schenirer, police and others to discuss her league’s future after a shooting at the park just one week before left the community shaken.

Police and community leaders have promised new safety measures, but Gomez says they should have already been put into place.

On April 12, an 18-year-old man was shot multiple times in the parking lot behind Crump-Blackwell Field while a game was in progress. The victim is expected to survive; meanwhile police have offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the shooting, which remains unsolved.

“It was not connected to Oak Park Little League,” said Sgt. Bryce Heinlein, a spokesman for the Sacramento Police Department. “We believe it had to do with gang activity.”

Whatever the reason, it’s had a chilling effect on the league.

Oak Park Little League regularly hosts games against four other leagues at Crump-Blackwell Field. After the shooting, organizers from three of the leagues—Tahoe, Parkway and Florin—informed Gomez they’ll no longer come to McClatchy Park.

Now, as players for Oak Park Little League prepared to face Airport Little League, Gomez stood near the field, watching.

“I want to hope people come back,” she said of her meeting with the city.

In recent years, McClatchy Park underwent a $2.8 million renovation. Some changes have come slower, however.

“This park has had a history of challenges,” Heinlein said.

At the April 19 meeting, the city proposed moving Oak Park Little League to other fields in the neighborhood, such as Sacramento Charter High School. The league’s organizers balked at the suggestion.

“It’s really their choice and they decided to stay,” Schenirer said.

In the wake of the shooting, the city has adopted a number of precautionary measures. Schenirer said the parking lot will be closed at all times except for games for the foreseeable future.

The city is also considering installing a 360-degree camera near the baseball diamond as well as additional fencing.

There will also be an increased police presence. Although there’d been a police officer in the parking lot on the day of the shooting, the officer left shortly before the incident. Now, on this first game since the incident, two officers watched as games got underway.

Schenirer says he is comfortable with games continuing to be played at Crump-Blackwell Field.

“We think it’s safe,” Schenirer said.

Gomez, for her part, says she’s been requesting more police for the Oak Park Little League for years.

“I just want safety for my kids.” Ω

Put some mettle to the pedal

icycling isn't just a fun and healthy activity, it gives riders more flexibility and dexterity getting around town. Still, there are many issues to consider: safety, routes, education, maintenance and, of course, avoiding getting that ride ripped off. Following are 10 tips to help you hit the road, informed and prepared.

Ten biking tips for a safer, smoother ride

1.

Pick a route with care

Primary streets don't always make for the best path. Traveling via Broadway or J Street will get you there, but it's probably worth going a few blocks out of the way for a more chill ride. Once you've found a route, get to know the spots that need more focus, like a hospital where distracted drivers are looking for parking, or those parts where you're apt to zone out. If possible, try to travel at less busy times; 8:50 a.m. traffic is so much more stressful than 9:05 a.m. traffic.

Lock it up

There's a huge market for stolen bikes. We can stop this—at least, in part. First, stop buying bikes from bike thieves. Also, stop buying bikes from people who buy them from bike thieves. It also helps, of course, to lock up your ride. Ryan Sharpe, president of the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates, recommends hardcore measures. Use a U-lock and lock the frame to something bolted to the ground,” he says. A word of caution: Locking up just the wheel is pointless—unless you just want to keep the wheel, for some reason. And

let's not even get started on those lame bike racks that only allow wheel hookups.

Safety, the law

California state law decrees that bikes follow the same rules as cars. If it's in the DMV handbook, it's the law for bikes—even if doesn't really make sense for cyclists. Here's a recommendation: Sacramento should implement the so-called Idaho stop, which can increase a rider's safety. Not familiar with it? In Idaho, cyclists are allowed to treat stop signs as yield signs and red lights as stop signs. Look around and proceed when it's safe to do so.

Safety, the lane

Hey, bike salmon, see those arrows in the bike lane? They indicate the flow of traffic. One of the things that can most improve a cyclist's safety is being predictable—so maybe go the right way, please?

Also, sidewalks. Granted, it's hard to even know the laws for riding on them—it varies between locations but, in a nutshell, if the sidewalk isn't specifically designated as a bike lane, then it's illegal to ride in a commercial area. And if you insist on riding on the sidewalk, know that you are pretty much going to be considered rude, so ride slow and yield to pedestrians.

5.

Safety, the ride

Anther big impact on bicycle safety is getting more people to ride. There aren't many studies on how, exactly, to make bicycling safer, but a 2014 one conducted by the University of Colorado at Denver shows that more bikes on the road means fewer collisions. Researchers called it the “safety in numbers effect.” Makes sense—we just become a normal part of traffic. Sacramento does well when it comes to demonstrating this. Good job #sacbikesquad!

Safety, the bike

Your bike should fit you. This makes it easier to mount and dismount as well start and stop.

This means less of a chance that you'll blow out a knee or wrist via strain. Have yours fitted by a professional or make adjustments yourself. Typically, the best fit is one that allows you to fully extend your leg on a down-stroke.

Safety, the equipment

Listen, there's going to be some body policing that goes with bicycling. If anything untoward happens to a cyclist, people ask about helmets. Some have been known to stop a helmetless rider to ask— often rudely—why he or she isn't wearing one. This is annoying because while helmets are great for protecting

heads when they hit the hard objects, I actually prefer avoiding the whole pavement-head interaction. Pay attention to your environment, keep your brakes in good shape and invest in some lights—all of these things can help prevent dangerous situations. That said, however, you've got to protect your brain bucket; so wear a helmet.

8.

Fix it, don’t toss it

Keep those tires inflated and lube the chains as needed. Full tires are less prone to flats; also, it pays to invest in quality tires. And if something does break or blow out? Addison Quarles from Addison's Bicycle Repairium has this bit of advice: “If it's broken, don't replace it, fix it,” he says. Too often, Quarles says, a bike is unceremoniously cast aside after something breaks down because there's an assumption the repair bill would be higher than a new ride.

“Only in extreme cases is this true,” Quarles says.

And, he cautions, if your bike “starts making a noise, don't ignore it.” Instead, take it to a mechanic or fix it yourself. Places like the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen can help with hands-on lessons and guidance.

9.

Biking, with kids

Michele Vincent, a Sacramento mother of two voracious cyclists and a one-time volunteer with the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen, advises putting all the same precautions in place for young ones. “Make sure you get the right setup for your family,” she says. A good place to start, she says, is by participating in an event such as Sacramento Kidical Mass, which teaches basic safety and etiquette. Education

Yup, bicyclists don't always follow the law, but it doesn't help that there aren't really any official guidelines. Rather, there is one page on bicycle law in the DMV handbook. Meanwhile, each day new cyclists hit the road without a rule book or clue. Task yourself with knowing the laws as well as the safest options—and actually follow them.

Not surprisingly, Addison Quarles, of Addison’s Bicycle Repairium, advocates fixing that broken ride instead of ditching it.

So you’re biking to work, the post office, the farmer’s market and the gym this month, and yes, you deserve a cookie (or nine, because you’re burning tons of calories!), but all spin and no play makes Jill a dull girl.

Heal the pain On

my second One writer’s morning of pedaling, I decided insight into my bike seat felt just a little too low. A low dealing with seat position causes a cyclist's knees to bend some of cycling’s more than necessary common aches with each pedal stroke—a recipe and injuries for pain in cycling's lynchpin joint. In 2006, I'd suffered a knee injury that stalled me for two weeks as I cycled from Spain to Greece, and I did not want to risk a repeat out here in the wild mountains of Bulgaria.

So, I made a quick adjustment, raising the seat post about a quarter inch.

It was a mistake that has plagued me ever since.

Within hours, a deep, gnawing ache had set into the rear of my leg, three inches above the heel. My Achilles tendon was injured—the well-known result among physical therapists of a seat post set too high.

I spent a week in a hostel in the old city of Plovdiv, with my leg elevated and a pack of frozen peas rubberbanded to my tendon. The inflammation eventually settled down, and for the next six weeks as I cycled through Turkey, the pain didn't return.

Five years later, however, and the injury is still with me. Every few months, my Achilles flares up again, and physical therapy, basic stretching and yoga are only marginally effective at staving off the pain.

I've experienced other cycling injuries, too, and so I am at once bewildered and encouraged by the late cycling guru Sheldon Brown's mantra, which he repeated frequently on his blog: Riding a bicycle should not hurt.

UC Davis cycling coach Judd Van Sickle tells athletes the same thing at the beginning of seminars and lectures: Cycling should be pain-free. Van Sickle, who cycled competitively for several years, explains the logic.

“With cycling, you don't have the impact of running that's going to increase your potential for overuse injuries, and you can find fairly neutral positions on a bicycle so that you aren't placing unusual stresses on your body,” Van Sickle says.

It's very true. Unlike running, cycling is a smooth and low-stress activity. Adjustable gears allow us to tackle long ascents without increasing load on the body while obtaining the benefits of intense cardiovascular training. Indeed, physical therapists often recommend cycling as an alternative exercise for injured runners Trouble is, cycling can and does hurt. While cycling's great virtue as an exercise form is its minimal impact on the joints, its chief flaw may be that it's so repetitive and homogenous.

“Cycling is a very constrained motion activity,” Van Sickle says.

If a person's only considerable form of exercise is cycling, imbalances in muscle and tendon strength will probably develop, leading to pain or injuries.

The quadriceps—those muscle slabs on top of your thighs—tend to get overworked by pedaling while the muscle directly opposing them, the hamstrings, get underused, Van Sickle says.

Since the quadriceps muscles attache via a tendon to the kneecap, imbalances in this muscle's strength can pull the kneecap off its proper line of motion, leading to rubbing between it and the femur and pain in the front of the knee. This is called Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, and trust me—it's not good. I had a bout with it in 2010 that lasted for three months. It started during a 50-mile December bike ride in cold and rain.

When the tissues in a joint get cold, they work less efficiently—and pain follows.

Cycling injuries are scary because they tend to creep up on us slowly.

The discomfort that comes with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome may be crippling—a dull, scraping ache that can be intolerable when riding uphill or even off the bike, while descending stairs. You don't want it.

A preventative trick to avoiding pain in the front of the knee, says Van Sickle, is to strengthen and stretch, not too much of either, and with a focus on all major leg muscle groups. That means squats for the quads, back bridges for the butt, Jane Fonda-style clamshell leg lifts and complementary stretching for all of these muscles. It also pays to keep the knees warm while cycling. Wear knee warmers, or fashion one by cutting a hole at the toe of a tube sock and hiking it up over your kneecap.

One of the more feared injuries among competitive cyclists are those involving the IT band, and even for casual amateurs, it can put one on public transit for weeks or months. Formally known as the iliotibial band, this large tendon runs parallel to the femur on the outside of the leg. It connects at the hip and at the outside of the knee. When this band becomes tight through imbalances in strength and flexibility, pain can develop on the outside of the knee so hot and searing

Too often, Brown said, the city doesn't seek enough community input in the early stages of projects. He pointed to a bike lane that was added to Stockton Boulevard several years ago as evidence.

“I doubt anybody asked residents, ‘Do you feel OK riding there?'” he said.

Brown called the city's planning process “top-down,” saying it leads to “no buy-in” from residents.

City traffic engineer Hector Barron disagreed, telling SN&R, “We'd have to have some level of outreach before we come back to council.”

There are plenty of neighborhoods the city can visit as part of this approach. Brown said that bike fatalities in Sacramento occur in an arc that runs through North Highlands, Arden-Arcade, Power Inn Road and south Sacramento. Most victims, he added, tend to be poor, minority men.

Vision Zero already faces one potential challenge, a common one for transit projects and initiatives locally: funding.

Barron told SN&R he'd like to bring in a consultant to help with the action plan, but that he needs more money to do this.

Although he's not yet sure what the costs will be, Barron said he will return to city council in May or June during its budget cycle to request additional funds.

etween 2010 and 2014, 130 people were killed in traffic crashes in Sacramento, including 48 pedestrians and 13 bicyclists.

Now, some activists are aiming to change those statistics with Vision Zero, a safetyoriented program that originated in Sweden in 1997.

Sacramento City Council voted unanimously last month to develop a Vision Zero task force and action plan locally. The program, which holds that traffic crashes are predictable and preventable, seeks to bring traffic fatalities down to zero and follows in the path of a similar south Sacramento effort.

City Councilman Steve Hansen, who first brought Vision Zero to council last year and made the motion to create the task force, called the initiative “a very substantive thing.”

Hansen envisions the task force examining how local development practices affect transportation. He also wants the program to consider ways to promote safety via improved roads, better biking and walking opportunities and education. More than this, Hansen says he'd like to see decades of car-oriented guidelines in Sacramento revisited.

“There are policies that have been put in place and things that have been allowed to happen that de-emphasize walking,” Hansen told SN&R. “We need to change these policies if we're going to actually help people.”

Hansen stressed the importance of Vision Zero.

“I think getting this right will leave a whole generation of Sacramentans better off,” Hansen said at the March 15 meeting.

“That's been my fear all along,” Brown said. “It's tempting to adopt a policy that doesn't have a lot of teeth to it.”

Brown's group and Kirin Kumar of Walk Sacramento, a nonprofit that advocates to make the area more pedestrian friendly, are currently collaborating to bring a Vision Zero program to south Sacramento, The two groups received a planning grant of roughly $25,000 from the California Endowment to develop the program.

Working independently of the city, Brown and Kumar have collected data and talked to south Sacramento residents. Brown said their program is a

Van Sickle says weakness in the pelvic stabilizer muscles often causes IT band issues.

“Everything tightens up to try and protect them, and then you get more tension on the IT band, and you get friction down around your knee,” he says.

To stave off inflammation, stretch the glute muscles. Do this by lying on your back, hugging the knee toward your chest and creating a tight pull on the outside of the butt.

If left unaddressed, the problem may become chronic, resurfacing repeatedly through the years.

Still, it's an injury to the Achilles tendon that's almost mythical in its capacity to hobble a person and sideline athletes for months. Fortunately for cyclists, avoiding Achilles injuries is simple. Van Sickle says incorrect riding posture is generally at fault.

When the seat post is too high, for example, one's toe must extend at the bottom of each pedal stroke, placing repetitive stress on the Achilles. Poorly placed cleats—for those who ride with cycling shoes that clip into pedals— also impact the Achilles tendon. Cleats that are set too far forward increase the toeing action of the foot, which directly stresses the Achilles. Van Sickle suggests moving the cleats back toward the heel so that your foot extends further over the pedal. If you ride in casual footwear on flat, platform pedals, making this adjustment is very easy.

With the exception of injuries obtained in crashes and collisions, cycling injuries are generally of the overuse sort. That is, muscles and tendons that may tear or snap when subjected to the explosive forces of other sports—like running or gymnastics—may simply become irritated through cycling.

A physical therapist recently told me, for example, that my Achilles, no matter how inflamed it becomes, will at least not rupture.

Many runners and basketball players, on the other hand, are familiar with the excruciating torture of a snapped Achilles tendon.

Still, cycling injuries are scary because they tend to creep up on us slowly. Avoiding them means staying vigilant and listening closely to your body. Aches—especially in the places discussed here—should be taken seriously. Ease off the pedaling as needed.

You may also want to have a professional fit you to your bike. This will involve a brief physical exam followed by a fine-tuning of nearly every adjustable dimension on your bicycle.

Brown told us that cycling shouldn't hurt. It's ironic that his mantra is most often remembered by those of us who have become injured through cycling, learning the hard way that riding a bike can and often does hurt—even if it shouldn't. Ω

Bike polo draws a passionate bunch. Though the concept of playing polo on bicycles started more than a century ago in Ireland, the hard-court version we see today dates back to the ’90s. Bike messengers in Seattle invented some rules and played in their spare time. It spread nationally, then internationally, in the early 2000s—a grassroots movement.

While people once played with just mountain bikes and ski poles, now there are companies dedicated to producing bike polo-specific gear. In San Francisco’s Dolores Park, there’s a brand new multipurpose court built with bike polo in mind. There are huge tournaments that draw players from all over the world.

Carrisosa remembers discovering the Sacramento bike polo scene several years ago in an old parking garage that’s since been torn down.

“It was mostly a drinking club, a boys club,” she says. “It wasn’t what it is now.”

She joined and invited a bunch of her friends. The dynamic changed. In 2012, the group officially became Capitol Bike Polo and adopted more structure. Players actually engaged in games—three vs. three—instead of just hitting the ball and chasing after it.

“The game has changed so much,” Hardy says. “It got competitive. Strategy came into play.”

Hardy’s bike polo career started eight years ago.

For the first four years, she was the only female player in town.

“They basically treated me like a little sister,” she says. “It was like tough love, but a good tough love.”

By definition, bike polo is co-ed. Though only four of Capitol Bike Polo’s 15 regulars are women, Carrisosa argues that bike polo is one of the most inclusive sports out there.

“The reason why is people don’t look for bike polo,” she says. “You find out about it because your friends tell you about it, people in your community. To me, it feels like if I’m being invited, it’s already inclusive.”

Capitol Bike Polo’s uneven male-to-female ratio is pretty common. More rare is the makeup of the Davis Bike Polo team, where seven of its 15 regulars are women. That’s a recent development, though.

Just two years ago, Jennifer Kutzleb was the only woman playing bike polo in Davis. As a sociology Ph.D. student at UC Davis, she quickly set off to identify the barriers women face in bike polo. After talking to many female bike polo players, she determined that the challenges women face in bike polo are generally the same as any other sport.

“There are more men in most sports, men’s sports receive more coverage than women’s sports, male athletes are better paid,” Kutzleb says. “Sports are perceived as a more masculine activity. I think women are dealing with being perceived as being unfeminine, too muscular or overly aggressive.”

And, of course, lots of female bike polo players can readily tell you about that time a guy told them something along the lines of, “You play so well for a girl!”

Unlike a lot of sports, however, players say men don’t automatically have a clear advantage in bike polo.

The emphasis isn’t on size or strength; rather, speed, teamwork and long-practiced skills.

Why the discrepancy in numbers, then? Kutzleb thinks it most has to do with bike polo’s roots and the usual way people learn to play.

“You put a mallet in their hand and give them a helmet and let them figure it out,” she says. “You can imagine that for a self-conscious woman, that doesn’t work well.”

She started Davis Bike Polo rookie nights, which emphasize coaching, drills and explanation of technique. April marked the first of monthly Women and Genderqueer nights this year.

“It’s a space where they don’t have to be so selfconscious about their bodies or whatever other issues they’re dealing with, and just get their feet wet,” Kutzleb says.

Carrisosa wishes she could host similar events with Capitol Bike Polo, but the club doesn’t have a solid home base. To Carrisosa, that’s the biggest thing keeping bike polo from growing locally. Right now, Capitol Bike Polo meets twice a week at the Southside Park tennis courts. But if anyone is playing tennis, they have to wait.

Sometimes, hours. That means it’s tough to recruit new players.

“I know the routine: I’ll wait it out, they’ll get off the court, we’ll move on,” she says. “But a lot of people don’t have the emotional attachment, the energy or the time to stick with it.”

Still, bike polo needs more players if it’s going to keep its momentum. Capitol Bike Polo sets up a miniature court outside the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen on Second Saturdays in an effort to spread the word.

Public Library to speak to kids—particularly young girls—about playing sports outside the mainstream, like bike polo.

“We’re all getting older. We’re five years older than we started playing,” she says, laughing. “The longer it takes to attract new players, the bigger the gap in skill level.”

When the weather is nice, Southside Park tennis courts tend to be in-use until 7 or 8 at night. And Carrisosa can’t exactly start a youth practice at that hour. She spoke at Sacramento City Council meetings.

She met with a Parks and Recreation representatives.

She sent countless emails to countless people with no responses.

“Where the city council focus has been, at least as far as sports goes, is the Kings,” she says. “We’re not asking for a million-dollar renovation. We’re asking for something that’s not being used currently to maybe be reconfigured or redesignated.”

Regardless, the local bike polo community won’t fade away any time soon. They’re having way too much fun.

“I think the reason why we don’t grow as much is the same as why the inclusivity is strong,” Carrisosa says.

“It’s word-of-mouth. It’s friends.” Ω

The other sammies: Few things beat an Ike’s sandwich and a long afternoon of people watching at Dolores Park. A San Francisco classic combination.

Soon, we’ll be able to get a little closer—and a little more easily—to that high. Ike’s Place is opening a location in downtown Davis, as recently confirmed by the Sacramento Business Journal. Ike’s will take over the former Firehouse Subs space at 212 F Street, hopefully by July. Pair one of its huge sandwiches with Central Park, and you’ve got yourself a less entertaining but still delightful day.

The first Ike’s opened in San Francisco in 2007. Now, there are more than 20 outposts. At the original spot, lines can still stretch

down the block. Fans love the flavor combinations, unusual ingredients, silly names, vegan options and being able to order something “extra dirty.” Yep, every sandwich comes with Ike’s Secret Dirty Sauce, a concoction best described as a zesty garlic aioli.

Since we’re an alt-weekly, let’s talk about these vegan sandwiches a little more. Every location is different, but some options in San Francisco include the Vegan Pilgrim, with vegan turkey, vegan cheese, cranberry sauce and Sriracha; the Vegan Meatless Mike, with vegan meatballs, vegan cheese and marinara; and the Vegan Handsome Owl, with breaded vegan chicken, vegan cheese, teriyaki and wasabi mayo.

Most sandwiches cost $9-$12.

My favorite? The Menage A Trois, with succulent halal chicken, barbecue sauce, honey, honey mustard and melty cheddar, pepper jack and Swiss cheeses, all encased in fabulous Dutch crunch. The name doesn’t hurt, either.

New Thai in the house: The ever-funky 9999 Thai-Laos Boat Noodle didn’t last long, and already, another Thai restaurant is in its place. Siam House (3010 Florin Road) opened a few weeks ago, serving the usual assortment of curries, noodle dishes, larb and papaya salad in a spacious setting.

Another market: Unseen Heroes is back at it with a new market, fittingly called the Market at Power Inn, every Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of Power Inn Road and Folsom Boulevard. It’s sort of like the Midtown Farmers Market meets Gather: Oak Park. Farmers tout produce alongside food trucks and booths from local makers—a quick, casual place to grab some lunch and groceries. Ω

Fountainhead Brewing Co. has only been open a few weeks, but it already impresses with its relaxed atmosphere and tasty beers, some of which are named with a nod to nearby Hollywood Park. My favorite so far is the Station 12 ($5), a Belgian blonde with a light, creamy feel and a bright, tart taste.

Even though the hot season is still months away, it’s going to be one of my go-to summer brews. Bonus, it’s got a sweet little 5.4 ABV, making it the perfect drink for whiling away the hours.

So fresh, so green Herbs Now is the time to enjoy loads of fresh herbs before it gets too hot. Basil and cilantro both do well in spring, so use them by the handful, rather than a sprinkle. In the increasingly frantic Midtown scene, Veg feels like an oasis of Zen. The floor above the venerable Thai Basil restaurant has seen a few iterations, most recently Level Up Lounge. In January, it was transformed into an Ayurvedic vegetarian cafe serving breakfast and lunch with a mix of Indian and Thai flavors.

In an area packed with late-night spots and cavernous eateries, executive chef/ owner Suleka Sun-Lindley recognizes the need for balance—in both the food and atmosphere. Fittingly, that’s the basis of Ayurvedic cooking as well: balance.

As chef of Thai Basil for 20 years, Sun-Lindley has a reputation for seeking out green-waste options and seasonal ingredients. Taking those ideals a step further, Veg is based on Ayurveda, an ancient Indian tradition of food as medicine. It’s like the mantra, “You are what you eat.”

Technically, in Ayurvedic practice, people seek to balance their systems by eating certain foods—and every person is different. That’s difficult to pull off at a restaurant, though. At Veg, the theory is more that eating meat-free, produceheavy, in-season and with lots of herbs is better for everyone. Fittingly, we learned at press time Veg’s menu will change soon to match the shift in seasons. You may not find the same dishes we did, but we expect the flavors to be similar. Menu options are all vegetarian, but can be made glutenfree or vegan by request.

Breakfast begins leisurely at 9 a.m., with a variety of egg and crepe dishes. The tender yellow crepes, made with rice and lentils, attain a nice

springiness despite their vegan formula. They might enclose seasonal fresh fruit and a sauce ($8.50) or scrambled tofu and panang curry ($9).

Both are unusual, and chef Gabriel Crocker presents them beautifully. Panang curry, a fairly mild and creamy, coconut-based Thai sauce, gets mixed with al dente vegetables and topped with sprightly pickled onions. It makes for a satisfying breakfast without being too heavy.

Menu descriptors can be a bit vague, so ask for details. We were a little surprised by two scrambled eggs ($4), which came with lots of greens and pickled vegetables. They were delicious, but not the plain side we expected.

Dishes can seem a bit monotonous, too, as they’re almost all a version of eggs, vegetables and tofu. However, the potato-based samosas ($8) are a good example of how Veg mashes up Thai and Indian cuisines in a health-conscious way. The flaky little turnovers are made with a vegan crust and served with a sweet chili-plum sauce.

While breakfast is available through the 3 p.m. closing time, lunch starts at 11 a.m. with more variety. A single-serving naan pizza ($8) comprises yeasty flatbread with a topping of scrambled tofu and green chutney or the same panang curry found in the crepes. They’re dairyfree unless you ask for cheese ($2).

Specials include a daily curry bowl ($9), served on one visit as a hearty portion with eggplant, green beans, Brussels sprouts and other veggies in a silky yellow curry sauce. The base is kitchari, an Ayurvedic combination of rice and lentils that adds some heft. Add the uberhealthy side salad of kale, apple, beet and cashews ($3) and it’s still a better deal than the very similar, smaller-portioned Veg lunch plate ($14).

Desserts are not listed on the menu, but Veg and Thai Basil share the same ones. One day, a vegan apple tart ($6) made a nice finish with coconut milk ice cream and a variety of roasted and fresh diced apples.

The strength of Veg is in its serenity. The walls have been transformed into bright backgrounds for local art and glass chandeliers twinkle in the sunlight. The food is well-prepared, if limited in scope. Seek out a quiet table to enjoy a healthy meal and find some balance in your day. Ω

Cannabis an Option for Fibromyalgia AN ESTIMATED 5 MILLION AFFLICTED WITH THIS CHRONIC PAIN CONDITION

B

ody pain spread out in various places, plus fatigue with difficulty sleeping —these are some of the main symptoms of fibromyalgia, a condition that affects an estimated 5 million Americans.

Problem is, as the Mayo Clinic explains, those symptoms are common to many other conditions — and because fibromyalgia can occur alone or with other conditions, plus has symptoms that ebb and flow, diagnosis can be tricky.

Gavi Lopez Loomis knows this all too well.

Loomis suffered without a name for what was hurting her for 10 years before being diagnosed with fibromyalgia two years ago. While she found relief when she tried cannabis, Loomis lacked transportation and access to cannabis doctors when she was living in Riverside County last year.

“I suffered through Vicodins and Norcos for four or five years, and finally those were not doing anything for me,” she says. “I didn’t like the way they made me feel.”

Different story now. Her primary care physician in Sacramento documented her condition.

Another physician evaluated her and issued a recommendation for medical cannabis. She found a collective close to her home, and now she has a regimen that works for her.

Although there are few clinical trials assessing the effectiveness of cannabis in fibromyalgia patients, some studies have suggested it can reduce pain. A 2011 study of 28 cannabis users and 28 non-users in Barcelona, Spain, found that two hours following cannabis consumption, participants showed a “statistically significant reduction of pain and stiffness” as well as improved relaxation and mental health.

“I can see the difference,” Loomis says. “I can feel the difference. I’m amazed.”

To others with the condition, or similar ones, Loomis says they don’t have to live that way.

Loomis, who’s 42, has experienced aching feet and cramping calves, she would also have distress in her face, arms, chest — “everywhere.” She went to doctors who couldn’t figure out what was ailing her.

“To sit there and endure the pain that comes along with this is ridiculous,” she says. “Don’t wait. Get the help you need. Try cannabis.”

Fibromyalgia has no test. As the Mayo Clinic explains, it appears to stem from how the brain and spinal cord process pain signals, so there is nothing to check via scan or chemical screening.

There’s really no mystery on how to stage an entertaining Sherlock Holmes play. It’s pretty elementary, really—just put together an engaging script, a solid cast and creative production elements. That’s just what Sacramento Theatre Company does with its current production of The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Oh, and one other thing—bring back the lead actors from a previous production to reprise their roles as the endearing and quirky characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Once again, the talented pair of William Elsman as Sherlock and Michael RJ Campbell as Watson join up to solve another case, just as they did in the 2011 STC staging of Sherlock Homes: The Final Adventure.

Here, playwrights R. Hamilton Wright and David Pichette have adapted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most popular tale, The Hound of the Baskervilles, keeping the basic mystery intact while pumping up the chemistry and humor between Holmes and Watson and adding some plot and character twists along the way.

The show starts with a bored Holmes lamenting to Watson that all the recent crimes are pretty uncreative and easily solvable. Then a mystery literally comes knocking on their London door, and the crimesolving duo is off to the moors of Devonshire, where murder, mayhem and a marauding hound await them.

Under the careful directing of Michael Laun, Elsman and Campbell play off each other perfectly, and the rest of the cast members are equally entertaining. What elevates this production even more is its imaginative set, colorful costumes and captivating

3 Mud Blue Sky So much talent and preparation have gone into the B Street Theatre’s production of Mud Blue Sky that it’s a shame it isn’t in service of a better play.

Elizabeth Hadden’s set design is a perfect representation of an off-brand hotel room and Paulette Sand-Gilbert’s costumes are excellent, particularly the generic stewardess uniforms.

It’s the play by Marisa Wegrzyn that’s weak.

What starts out as a sharp, snarky comedy about a reunion of three flight attendants in a motel room during a layover too soon loses focus.

Jamie Jones (playing world-weary to a T) is Beth, who suffers from continual back pain and is considering retiring to … do what? Elisabeth Nunziato, as Sam, believably plays the caring mother of a teenage son fending for himself while she’s away—until she turns all cougar-y when Beth’s “pot boy” (Alexander Pannullo), a high school kid who sells her weed when she’s in town, turns up. Tara Sissom works perfectly between screamingly funny and painfully poignant as Angie, who was fired for being overweight and is lost without her job.

The playwright wants to make a serious comment on these disparate lives, but can’t make it work. Aiming for wistful and maybe hopeful, it just ends up sad.

Ah, middle-aged white men—there truly is no personal issue so crushingly banal or microscopically inconsequential that they can’t tell a soggy, quasiinspirational story about heroically overcoming it. Tom Hanks reunites with his Cloud Atlas co-director Tom Tykwer for the flimsy but watchable A Hologram for the King, adapted from a novel by Dave Eggers. Yet the scenario seems more suited to the worst impulses of Cameron Crowe than to the man who made Run Lola Run and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.

Hanks plays disgraced American businessman Alan Clay, who tries to find redemption in the unlikeliest of places: himself (cue AM rock staples). More concretely, Hanks’ IT salesman is trying to find personal and economic redemption in Saudi Arabia, where he has been sent to pitch the monarchy on a hologram conferencing system. That’s what the movie is about, I swear to God—Tom Hanks trying to find Wi-Fi in the desert.

Of course, Alan arrives in Saudi Arabia carrying a cargo load of emotional baggage—his ex-wife hates him (ugh, women); his father still blames him for a disastrous factory closing back home (ugh, old people); he can’t fathom the local customs (ugh, foreigners); he sports a scary lump at the base of his spine (ugh, the toxicity of our shallow Western culture); and he’s repeatedly stonewalled by his Saudi contact’s incompetent receptionist (ugh, the lower classes, and also, ugh, foreigners and women again).

The only positive thing in Alan’s life, and the only reason he’s willing to debase himself on the other side of

the world, is his daughter Kit. Squeezed dry by the divorce, Alan needs money for Kit’s college education (“College is your thing!” screams his off-screen ex-wife), and so he endures the antiseptic hotel room and the ill-equipped office tent and the lack of legal alcohol. Cracks in his facade begin to show almost immediately, but the entire film is obviously traveling on a monorail toward messages about embracing the real and letting go of your shit, so just relax.

Along the route, Alan bonds with a colorful driver played by Alexander Black and romances Sidse Babett Knudsen’s Danish tech worker and Sarita Choudhury’s divorced Saudi doctor. Knudsen and Choudhury are fine actresses (Knudsen starred in The Duke of Burgundy), and in a just world, they would be headlining an action-comedy or crime drama together rather than playing the third and fifth bananas in this moist wisp.

And yet for all of the eye-rolling, arms-crossed ill will that the premise engenders, Tykwer squeezes in enough narrative conviction and visual verve to hold your interest. Hanks did his most truly transformative work of the last quarter-century in Cloud Atlas (so naturally it was laughed off the screen), but Alan Clay is more in the Hanks wheelhouse of affably brittle sad sacks. He can do this sort of crumpled decency in his sleep, but he gives his all to Alan Clay, a sure sign of his faith in some fairly shoddy material. Ω

The Boss

A ruthless tycoon (Melissa McCarthy) goes to prison for insider trading; when she gets out, she’s forced to move in with her former assistant (Kristen Bell), then decides that her ticket back will be to horn in on the assistant’s daughter’s Girl Scout troop cookie business. McCarthy teams again with husband Ben Falcone as director and co-writer (with McCarthy and Steve Mallory). Did they set out to make an even worse movie than 2014’s Tammy? Well, they did—crude, cruel, coarse and laughless.

Falcone encourages and caters to McCarthy’s worst impulses; she should leave him home and stick with Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Spy). J.L.

Everybody Wants Some!!

Writer-director Richard Linklater’s latest might well have been called Dazed and Confused and in College and Five Years Later.

That’s basically the whole ball of wax, following an ensemble of Texas collegiate baseball players as they begin the 1980-81 academic year—drinking, smoking dope, partying, pranking, line dancing, trying to hook up and, every now and then, training on the diamond and attending class. The movie is good fun, with Linklater’s trademark dizzy, sparkling R-rated dialogue and, like Dazed and Confused 23 years ago, a soundtrack chock full of nostalgic rock ’n’ roll. The cast of newcomers is appealing: Blake Jenner, Ryan Guzman, Juston Street, Wyatt Russell, Zoey Deutch. There may be a star or two in the making here; personally, my money is on Glen Powell. J.L.

Criminal

A death-row sociopath (Kevin Costner) is imprinted with the memories of a murdered CIA agent (Ryan Reynolds) in an effort to unravel the case the agent was working on—something about a computer hacker (Michael Pitt) and a shadowy anarcho-terrorist (Jordi Mollà). The psycho manages to escape the law, but he can’t escape the memories—or the agent’s feelings for his wife and daughter (Gal Gadot, Lara Decaro). The script by Douglas Cook and David Weisberg becomes more preposterous by the minute, but entertainingly so, and director Ariel Vroman has a high-pedigree cast (including Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones) to escort us through all the over-the-top whoppers.

Oldman’s last line suggests that this is the pilot to a projected franchise for Costner, as a sort of grizzled, schizophrenic James Bond. J.L.

Hardcore Henry

A man wakes up with bionic arms and legs but with no memory and no voice. A woman (Haley Bennett) says his name is Henry, and she’s his wife; beyond that he knows nothing, except that a vicious warlord (Danila Kozlovsky) is trying hard to kill him. Director Ilya Naishuller (co-writing with Will Stewart) has a cool gimmick: the entire movie is seen through Henry’s eyes, and the chases, fights, falls, crashes and stunts are virtually nonstop. It’s a commendable technical tour de force, but it wears thin. The constant bloodletting becomes oppressive, the story is more trouble to follow than it’s worth, and the movie becomes like watching somebody

The Huntsman: Winter’s War

Writers Evan Spiliotopoulos and Craig Mazin and director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan concoct a combination prequel and sequel to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman, with fairly dismal results. Like its predecessor, it’s too dark and doomy to be any fun, and this time any link to the Brothers Grimm is tenuous indeed—it amounts to dropping the name of Snow White every half-hour or so, like a no-talent ham bragging about the famous stars he’s worked with.

The convoluted script has none of the emotional resonance that makes fairy tales live for centuries, and director Nicolas-Troyan (prematurely promoted from visual effects work) shows no understanding of the difference between wall-to-wall CGI and real storytelling magic. A good cast tries hard: Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain. J.L.

The Jungle Book

The man-cub Mowgli (Neel Sethi) reluctantly agrees to leave his beloved wolf pack rather than expose them to the wrath of the tiger Shere Khan (voice by Idris Elba). The panther Bagheera (Ben Kingsley) agrees to escort Mowgli to the human village, and on the way they befriend the bear Baloo (Bill Murray). The second live-action remake of a Disney animated classic (well, sort of live-action—everything but young Sethi is computer generated) isn’t quite the triumph last year’s Cinderella was, but it’s another winner—exciting (if a trifle overlong) and gorgeous to look at. The script is darker than the 1967 feature, but it’s still more Disney than Kipling, even finding room for two songs from the original score. Jon Favreau directs with style, and Sethi is a real discovery. J.L.

Midnight Special

This long-awaited sci-fi bummer from Jeff Nichols is an admirable mixed bag, an attempt to make a Spielbergian magical child movie without any style or spark. The film stars Michael Shannon as the father to an inexplicably telepathic and extrasensory child, both of them escapees from a religious cult called The Ranch, on the run with family friend Joel Edgerton toward an unknown destiny.

Much like Nichols’ last movie, Mud, the film starts strong but loses its way, and there are enough narrative dead ends (e.g., the machinations of The Ranch and its figureheads matter a lot and then don’t, and then kind of do again and then don’t) and superfluous characters (the Edgerton character seems wholly unnecessary) to suggest a troubled post-production and a reduced running time. Whatever the case, the film never quite satisfies as genre entertainment or as big-ideas cinema, and emotional investment is weirdly minimal. D.B.

Miles Ahead

Don Cheadle stars, co-writes and makes his feature directorial debut with the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, portraying the jazz legend during his fallow period in the late 1970s. Cheadle does fine work as the desiccated and unstable Davis, but as a director, his visual attempts to match the fiery cool of Davis’ music mostly feel amateurish and flat. On the plus side, Miles Ahead doesn’t go for the greatest-hits treatment of other musical biopics like I Saw the Light—the entire film takes place over the course of a couple of days, with frequent flashbacks to Davis’ more productive days. However, Miles Ahead falls into an even more pernicious trap, in that it makes a tangentially related white guy (Ewan McGregor as fictional journalist Dave Brill) the main character in a black man’s life.

Union Bound

In the fall of 1864, two Union soldiers escape from a Confederate POW camp and try to make their way to safety behind Union lines, getting help along the way from slaves longing for their own freedom. This low-budget historical drama (reportedly based on the diary of a real Civil War veteran) swings back and forth between being earnestly amateurish and comically inept, with its ragged, starving, warravaged characters played mostly by well-fed, neatly groomed people in spotlessly laundered Civil War re-enactor get-ups. No director is named, but the credit “A Harvey Lowry Film” suggests he’s to blame for the clumsy staging and the gaping, endless pauses between writer John Errington’s stilted lines of dialogue. The actors, all unknown, seem to mean well, so we won’t blame them by name for the results. J.L.

The Brothers Grimsby

The Brothers Grimsby will almost undoubtedly end up as the best film of 2016 in which the heroes are attacked by giant penises while hiding in an elephant’s vagina, although Terrence Malick still has a couple more movies due out this year. Directed by Louis Leterrier but guided by the nothing-sacred body humor of star and co-screenwriter Sacha Baron Cohen, The Brothers Grimsby is too infantile and mean to recommend, but too embarrassingly funny to dismiss. Cohen stars as a sculpted-byLiam-Gallagher-and-Guinness soccer hooligan who reconnects with his long-lost brother (Mark Strong), a deep-cover superspy in the middle of a dangerous mission. There are the expected fish-out-of-water beats and gross-out gags, and the peripheral characters in this world feel like thinly sketched afterthoughts, but the film works when it focuses on Cohen and Strong. In the third installment of the franchise, Calvin’s barbershop and Angie’s beauty parlor are still in business, and a popular social center in their neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. Worried about rising gang violence, Calvin (Ice Cube) tries to negotiate a weekend ceasefire between rival gangs, even as he sees his son (Michael Raney Jr.) falling under the influence of one of them. Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver’s script has its preachy side, but with an endearing mixture of idealism and cynical humor, and the cast is packed with solid talent—Cedric the Entertainer (here, as in the first two, a standout, though his old-age makeup hasn’t improved), Regina Hall, Anthony Anderson, J.B. Smoove, Common and Nicki Minaj. Director Malcolm D. Hall handles the proceedings with a surprisingly sprightly touch. J.L.

It’s

hard to miss the quiet but decisive coup playing out across our region. Consumers are opting in ever-growing numbers for brews made in small batches by independent, local craftspeople. As the grid, burbs and hills all fill in with tap rooms, and craft handles muscle out national brands in more bars and restaurants, the trend shows no signs of flagging. And it’s not just here — across the country, craft beer is upsetting the market and giving big commercial brands a serious scare.

Ryan Graham, current president of Sacramento Area Brewer’s Guild and brewmaster at Track 7 Brewing Co., thinks he knows why, and it’s more than just a matter of superior taste. He suspects the Great Recession laid the foundation for craft to become king. When everyday people who had played by the rules were

betrayed by the system in the economic meltdown, they began to mistrust big business.

“People got away with doing some really crappy things and it hurt a lot of people,” Graham says. “And people said, ‘Enough is enough, we’re going to take it into our own hands.’ And that’s where this craft movement in all industries really seems to have gained momentum.”

The result is an ever-deepening thirst not just for high-quality, handcrafted products, but for a relationship with the maker and an emotional connection to the production process.

“The people that live in Sacramento love craft beer,” Graham says. “And I would say they’re probably among the most discerning consumers.”

That sets a high bar for existing brewers and for the 10 or so new

breweries that set up shop in the region each year, a pace that hasn’t yet slowed.

But despite Sacramento brewers taking home state and national awards, Graham believes our local brewing culture is still in its adolescence, with room for improvement and its share of growing pains. He says Sacramento needs to stay true to our roots, honing in on what’s unique and local without trying to be the “next” anything. For example, a few local brewers are creating unique flavor profiles using local produce.

“Our competitive advantage is proximity to some of the most world-class agricultural space this world knows,” Graham says.

So, stay tuned. If this is Sacramento’s craft brewing awkward phase, witnessing beer come of age in our town is going to be a thing of beauty.

Gupta and Hammond didn’t have any time to work much out in advance of recording at Gold Lion Arts. Instead, they just went for it, driven by curiosity, and chose the best songs for the record. Both musicians brought years of experience, sure, but the key magical ingredient here was the easy musical communication between Hammond and Gupta.

Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera’s revival season, which saw a sold-

It was still, overall, a good evening of music, and one I enjoyed more than my last time out to the Philharmonic. There are still some growing pains present, but it’s progress.

Old school: With the progression of digital recordings inevitably also comes the backlash. We have big-name artists like Andrew Bird recording in a barn straight to tape—with a full band on a single track. Locally, we have Honyock and Mondo Deco.

The two bands released a split tape last week, Supercassette H/MD, harkening back to the time when giving your crush a mixed tape was the only move to make. They each recorded two songs via $80 tape deck from 1985—all in a garage, to boot.

nostalgic in a completely non-cheesy way. It’s like Honyock is playing

its psychedelic-tinged rock right in front of you at a house show: low-fi and intimate. Glam-influenced power-pop band Mondo Deco sounds right at home—deeply familiar, really—plastered in fuzz.

Honyock and Mondo Deco aren’t searching for perfection, and that’s what makes Supercassette H/MD so refreshing. Grab the $5 cassette online from Mechanical Bull Records. And yes, even though the bands recorded old school-style does not mean they failed to include digital download cards.

Surprise, surprise: Sacramento enigma Death Grips announced another album: Bottomless Pit drops Friday, May 6. This is roughly one year after the group’s supposedly last-ever double-record, the Powers That B. Death Grips already posted the 13 song titles—including the previously released single “Hot Head”— and lyrics online. A brief skim reveals some gems of one-liners, such as “I jizz snowmen,” “a Rubik’s cubicle for the new cog” and “I shit on your guilt trip then extinguish your illness like seven grams of thorazine tyrannic authority cleansed by your aggressor.” Yup. out crowd at the Sacramento Community Center on Saturday night. I went to one other this season—The Music of Queen—and left bummed about how it underutilized the orchestra. Last week’s showing was much better, but the Philharmonic still has some dust to shake off as it goes into next season.

Conductor Stuart Chafetz was a treat on the podium. He was energetic—he pantomimed flying like Superman during the “Superman March”—and unafraid to let moments stretch and play out fully, like he did with “Adventures on Earth” from E.T. The first half of the program was mostly material I wasn’t that familiar with, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. The back half of the show was filled with big Williams guns: songs from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and Jaws.

It was during the second half, however, that I also found myself being a bit more critical. The orchestra sounded good, but there was something keeping everything from sounding great.

Some sections sounded almost dampened and flat—a little on the sparse side. Though the SP&O is excellent at playing quietly, it also seemed hesitant to take some sections to the louder side of the dynamic scale.

It also could be the convention center’s acoustics, or where I was sitting. It could be the size of the orchestra itself.

But I do think part of it was on the orchestra. Especially on pop tunes, which a general audience is going to know and expect to sound a certain way, there isn’t a whole lot of room for interpretation or error.

And there were a few moments—

Next year’s season has already been announced, and its Pops Series includes nights dedicated to the Beatles, David Bowie and the Beach Boys.

With six original ALT CoUNTRY albums released throughout his career, Wayne launched his latest album, Hits the Hits, last year, where he adds his outlaw twist to songs like “Disturbia” by Rihanna and “Rock and Roll” by Led Zeppelin.

Your boyfriend has a tangled, convoluted notion of love. If I was invested in parapsychology, I’d suggest that he imagines himself to have an unresolved past life connection with this woman. If I was trained in psychology, I might surmise that he has attachment issues stemming from codependency, or perhaps I’d look for symptoms of inverted narcissism.

If I used a 12-step lens, I’d suggest that he’s in love with love. But as a realist, I think your man is unschooled in reality.

Your boyfriend believes that by accepting abuse, he’s proving his unconditional love. Not true.

Unconditional love is the ability to hold an awareness of oneself or another as a being comprised of a persona (our social masks), a shadow (traits unacceptable to our ego) and a soul (the internal system that functions toward wholeness and increased awareness) and to offer acceptance without conditions. But a healthy relationship must have conditions. Allowing oneself to be abused is a serious failure of unconditional love toward oneself. It is also an act of ignorance about real love.

Most parents try to practice unconditional love toward their children. The parent of a teen acting out in aggression might get punched or have money stolen.

And yet the parent, as a teacher of life, must respond with compassion while insisting on positive moral choices. The power dynamics of that relationship, and the emotional immaturity of a teen, demand a regulated response. Your boyfriend is treating this woman as if she is his child. That’s unhealthy for both of them—and you. As long as your man

holds a fantasy about his lost soul mate, he’s only able to share a slim slice of his heart with you. Is that enough?

Is there a recommended type of cannabis for relieving glaucoma?

—DIC Good question. People have used marijuana to treat the symptoms of glaucoma for years. In fact, Robert Randall, the first person to receive medical marijuana from the U.S. government, suffered from glaucoma. Elvy Musikka, one of the four people left on the program, also uses cannabis to treat glaucoma.

Before we get into this, let’s remember that, as I’ve said before, I am not a doctor. Consult your physician before taking on any cannabis-related regimens.

The American Glaucoma Society recognizes the helpfulness of cannabis in treatment, according to a position statement that can be found on the AGS website. Cannabis assists patients by lowering pressure between the eyes, but even the statement notes that since the effects only last about three hours, you have to toke up multiple times a day to have relief.

The statement goes on to say that “marijuana’s mood altering effects would prevent the patient who is using it from driving, operating heavy machinery and functioning at maximum mental capacity.

They make a good point about glaucoma patients maybe not wanting to have to smoke weed constantly. I called my friend Clint Werner, author of Marijuana, Gateway to Health, and the first thing he said was, “Yeah, it helps, but you have to smoke a lot. Robert Randall smoked, like, seven joints a day.”

Seven joints per day may not seem like much to those of you for whom cannabis use is a lifestyle decision, but even if you roll a pinner, that’s a pretty good amount of weed. Someone unaccustomed to being slightly stoned all the time may decide that the benefits of cannabis don’t outweigh the side effects. Clint said tinctures may help those folks who don’t want to puff all day, every day. More from the AGS: “An exciting finding in the past decade is the discovery of receptors for the active components of marijuana in the tissues of the eye itself, suggesting that local administration has the possibility of being effective.”

How cool would that be? Imagine weed-based eye drops that help people with glaucoma. I am hoping the DEA is really serious about rescheduling cannabis so that the scientists can do science things and maybe find a cure. Ω Ngaio Bealum is a Sacramento comedian, activist and marijuana expert.

But I believe you are more receptive than usual to this challenge, and I am also convinced that you especially need it right now. Are you ready to be pushed further than I have ever pushed you? Study this quote from novelist Mark Z. Danielewski: “Passion has little to do with euphoria and everything to do with patience. It is not about feeling good. It is about endurance. Like patience, passion comes from the same Latin root: pati.”

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You’re in a phase

of your cycle when you’ll be rewarded for your freshness and originality. The more you cultivate a “beginner’s mind,” the smarter you will be.

What you want will become more possible to the degree that you shed everything you think you know about what you want. As the artist Henri Matisse said, if a truly creative painter hopes to paint a rose, he or she “first has to forget all the roses that were ever painted.” What would be the equivalent type of forgetting in your own life?

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “Am I still a hero if

CANCER (June 21-July 22): “We need people in

I agree. Our mental health thrives when we can have candid conversations with free spirits who don’t censor themselves and don’t expect us to water down what we say. This is always true, of course, but it will be an absolute necessity for you in the coming weeks. So I suggest that you do everything you can to put yourself in the company of curious minds that love to hear and tell the truth. Look for opportunities to express yourself with extra clarity and depth. “To have real conversations with people may seem like such a simple, obvious suggestion,” says Moore, “but it involves courage and risk.”

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): I watched a video of a

helicopter pilot as he descended from the sky and tried to land his vehicle on the small deck of a Danish ship patrolling the North Sea. The weather was blustery and the seas were choppy.

The task looked at best strenuous, at worst impossible. The pilot hovered patiently as the ship pitched wildly. Finally there was a brief calm, and he seized on that moment to settle down safely.

According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you may have a metaphorically similar challenge in the coming days. To be successful, all you have to do is be alert for the brief calm, and then act with swift, relaxed decisiveness.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “Show me a man who

isn’t a slave,” wrote the Roman philosopher Seneca. “One is a slave to sex, another to money, another to ambition; all are slaves to hope or fear.” Commenting on Seneca’s thought, blogger Ryan Holiday says, “I’m disappointed in my enslavement to self-doubt, to my resentment towards those that I dislike, to the power that the favor and approval of certain people hold over me.” What about you, Virgo? Are there any emotional states or bedeviling thoughts or addictive desires that you’re a slave to? The coming weeks will be a favorable time to emancipate yourself.

As you do, remember this: There’s a difference between being compulsively driven by a delusion and lovingly devoted to a worthy goal.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “Everyone who has

ever built a new heaven first found the power to do so in his own hell.” That noble truth was uttered by Libran philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche,

and I bet it will be especially meaningful for most of you during the rest of 2016. The bad news is that in the past few months you’ve had to reconnoiter your own hell a little more than you would have liked, even if it has been pretty damn interesting. The good news is that these explorations will soon be winding down. The fantastic news is that you are already getting glimpses of how to use what you’ve been learning. You’ll be well-prepared when the time comes to start constructing a new heaven.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Zugzwang” is a

German-derived word used in chess and other games. It refers to a predicament in which a player cannot possibly make a good move. Every available option will weaken his or her position.

I propose that we coin a new word that means the opposite of zugzwang: “zugfrei,” which shall hereafter signify a situation in which every choice you have in front of you is a positive or constructive one; you cannot make a wrong move. I think this captures the essence of the coming days for you, Scorpio.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “We have to

learn how to live with our frailties,” poet Stanley Kunitz told the Paris Review. “The best people I know are inadequate and unashamed.” That’s the keynote I hope you will adopt in the coming weeks. No matter how strong and capable you are, no matter how hard you try to be your best, there are ways you fall short of perfection. And now is a special phase of your astrological cycle when you can learn a lot about how to feel at peace with that fact.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): How do plants

reproduce? They generate seeds that are designed to travel. Dandelion and orchid seeds are so light they can drift long distances through the air. Milkweed seeds are a bit heavier, but are easily carried by the wind. Foxglove and sycamore seeds are so buoyant they can float on flowing water. Birds and other animals serve as transportation for burdock seeds, which hook onto feather and fur. Fruit seeds may be eaten by animals and later excreted, fully intact, far from their original homes. I hope this meditation stimulates you to think creatively about dispersing your own metaphorical seeds, Capricorn.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “It is a fault to

wish to be understood before we have made ourselves clear to ourselves,” said philosopher Simone Weil. I hope that prod makes you feel a bit uncomfortable, Aquarius. I hope it motivates you to get busy investigating some of your vague ideas and fuzzy self-images and confused intentions. It will soon be high time for you to ask for more empathy and acknowledgment from those whose opinions matter to you. You’re overdue to be more appreciated, to be seen for who you really are. But before any of that good stuff can happen, you will have to engage in a flurry of introspection. You’ve got to clarify and deepen your relationship with yourself.

Much of the time, the knowledge you have accumulated and the skills you have developed are supreme assets. Back in the saddle On average, Debra Banks rides 13,000 miles per year all on her trusty bicycle. She pedals so much, in fact, that Banks also earned a Mondial Award from Randonneurs USA, which means she’s circumnavigated the entire planet—all 40,000 kilometers of it—on her bicycle. It’s safe to say Banks is an ultra-distance cyclist with a penchant for the great outdoors, as she’s pedaled through states like Washington and Alaska and even traveled abroad to France and Australia just to ride.

She’s no stranger to the randonnée, a French term that describes an old style of long-distance cycling.

As an active member of RUSA, a national club for people who ride long distances, Banks completed nine randonnée events in the past five years. But, all major mileage aside, Banks is also the owner of Rivet Cycle Works, a handcrafted leather saddle company making those multiday, hard-hitting routes a little more comfortable for the backside.

What inspired Rivet Cycle Works?

When I did my first 1,200 kilometer bike ride, I ended up with second-degree saddle sores, incredibly painful. I thought, “That’s never going to happen again.”

When you do these long-distance bike rides, because you’re spending so much time on your bike, the main three points on your body that start to hurt are your contact points. And those are your hands on the handlebars, your feet on the pedals and your butt on the saddle. That’s what suspends you on your bicycle. In long distance, there are a lot of people who end up with saddle sores, lower back aches, etc. When I started making saddles, the idea was the saddle has to be able to carry you 1,200 kilometers and not give you that pain and horrible feeling and that’s part of the reason why I started the company.

Why leather?

They’re riveted at the nose of the saddle and they’re riveted at the rear of the saddle and the leather stretches between those two points acting like a hammock.

So, when the leather breaks into you, just like your own favorite pair of shoes, that saddle starts to form-fit to your body and your biomechanics on the bike. That’s going to be quite a bit more comfortable of a fit than a plastic saddle.

What does randonneurring mean, exactly?

It’s an old French sport that dates back to the 1800s, older than the Tour de France for people who ride ultra distances. The shortest distance is 200 kilometers [and] the longest is 1,200 kilometers, which translates to about 126 to 760 miles. And, you have 90 hours to complete the ride.

The rides are long. They’re not easy. They take a lot out of you and it’s important to learn how your body will react to dehydration, lack of sleep, or not great nutrition and riding your bike for 24 hours on end, for days on end.

That’s intense. Why do you enjoy this cycling style?

The camaraderie of friends when you do these kinds of bike rides, it’s really different. It’s not just like an acquaintance where you get together and have a beer.

But, when you’ve been riding your bike for 25 to 30 hours straight with somebody and you get a flat tire and it’s raining and they stop and wait for you, or you wait for them when they’re having stomach issues. You have this adventure and this expedition on your bike and you have these experiences that are a whole lot deeper than, “Let’s just go on a casual bike ride.”

You mentioned you were severely injured riding last year.

We were actually practicing for a randonnée that was coming up in the year. We

got hit one year ago, January 30, by a drunk driver with .22 blood alcohol and there were five of us on the bike ride. We got hit by a drunk driver 8 miles outside of Ukiah and he took out all five of us.

Most of us spent the night in the ER, I had emergency surgery, blah, blah, blah.

It was pretty severe. I ended up with an ankle in about 30 pieces.

That’s horrible. Have you gotten back on the bike since?

I was cleared to start riding again six weeks ago. As soon as I got cleared, the next day I went on a 30-mile bike ride.

(Laughs.) You can’t keep the randonnée out of the person. I am now able to ride 100-mile weeks and this past week I rode 70 miles and I paid for it, actually.

My leg was really sore the next day. It’s a long haul. I’m not quite ready to ride these long distances yet, but I’m working towards it.

Do you have any randonnée goals coming up?

There are two 1,200 kilometer rides that I plan on going to. One’s in October and it’s in Florida. But, the big one that I really want to do and I really want to finish is in Australia and that’s in November. Ω
