The MLK way Police lights flash in the distance. A crackling, fireworks-like noise and heavy booming sounds grow louder.

They’re here: The Martin Luther King Jr. Day marchers.

Every MLK Day, students and neighbors leave from Grant High School in north Sacramento on an eight-mile trek to downtown. I’ve watched these marchers for years—the Grant drumline leading a procession of thousands of students, moms and dads, police and politicians and more—but, this year, I joined them.

Police cars and motorcycles shut down Highway 160 as we marched over the American River. Men and women cheered as we passed Loaves & Fishes. We dipped under the B Street overpass, and the shouts and whistles were louder than a football game. Finally, on K Street near the Convention Center, dancers from Grant shook and moved while the drummers and brass players let their instruments soar. An amazing scene, an energy downtown seldom experiences. It was awesome!

And then it was over. Marchers loaded onto buses back to their neighborhoods. Downtown slowly returned to its slumber.

America definitely has come a long way in the nearly 54 years since MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech. But seeing all these black kids and families from the city’s inner-ring neighborhoods, folks who I seldom see downtown, reminded that we still have a way to go.

Here’s hoping this new and future downtown Sacramento will be a place for all races and economic backgrounds. Then, maybe every day on the grid will feel like MLK Day.

Re “The silly savagery of man” by Daniel Barnes (SN&R Film, January 7): Kudos to Daniel Barnes for astutely pointing out that there are excesses in Hollywood films that go beyond over-the-top acting and bloated scripts. First, it was soundtracks—all music all the time at ear-splitting volume. Then followed levels of violence and gun play, regardless of setting, that rivaled anything on Omaha Beach. Now it’s cinematography that sweeps everything before it, so richly calculated for an audience that is starved for the real thing (it’s called “nature”). Movies have always been a form of virtual reality, but this kind of movie is poverty stricken for ideas.

conservative, developer-friendly rule in Sacramento’s northwest county by Republican Roberta MacGlashan, four candidates are vying to succeed the county supervisor—and for voters, it could be a tough choice.

That’s because a top priority for each candidate is pushing for progressive change with respect to bike lanes, public transit and how to free Sacramento from its plague of daily traffic jams. Not your typical supervisor agenda, indeed.

MacGlashan announced in September she won’t run in the June election to reclaim her longstanding seat, which represents Citrus Heights and Folsom, as well as Orangevale, Antelope, Rancho Murieta and Rio Linda/ Elverta, each an unincorporated community of Sacramento County.

In the race to replace her are Steve Miller, a 57-year-old Citrus Heights city councilman; 57-year-old Kerri Howell, a Folsom city councilwoman since the late 1990s; former Citrus Heights mayor and city council member Sue Frost, 59; and 55-year-old Teresa Stanley, longtime board president with the Folsom Cordova Unified School District.

As they campaign for votes for the seat of District 4 supervisor, candidates are discussing issues such as public safety, simplified permitting processes for new businesses and homelessness.

But, perhaps surprisingly, it’s transit where the four seem to share the most common ground.

All agree that road congestion plagues Sacramento and its rural hinterlands and suburbs, and that cycling and walking infrastructure must be improved. Rail lines need to be extended to important destinations, they say.

“Everyone talks about the region and Sacramento as being world-class, but we’re never going to be world-class if, even in the urban parts of the county, everyone keeps depending on driving everywhere,” said Howell, a Democrat, who says she is proud of the Sacramento region’s status as a premier cycling area and wants to continue building upon it.

ignoring tHe auditor Getting paid to work out, overpaying for chemicals and sticking potentially unsanitary laryngoscopes into people’s throats. Welcome to the city of Sacramento.

Of the 80 tips that came to the city’s whistleblower hotline over a recent four-month period, these were the three the Office of the City Auditor substantiated, City Auditor Jorge Oseguera told the Sacramento City Council earlier this month.

As a result, the Sacramento Fire Department is considering switching to disposable laryngoscope blades that go into people’s mouths, Oseguera said. His office also confirmed that solid waste drivers commonly knock off hours early, but still collect a full day’s pay, and that the city could probably do a better job of negotiating lower chemical prices.

The tips Oseguera’s office investigated were reported to the city’s whistleblower hotline between June and October of last year.

The hotline was established in March 2012.

As usual, Oseguera ended his January 12 presentation by requesting funds to hire a full-time investigator. And, as usual, the council didn’t acknowledge the request. (Raheem F. Hosseini)

ride safe Fewer thefts and more cameras. That’s what Sacramento Regional Transit riders experienced in 2015, according to RT’s Police Services unit.

Specifically, riders reported 11 percent fewer thefts last year than they did in 2014, a Police Services release states. That amounts to 60 thefts total, 46 percent of which resulted in an arrest.

The release partially attributed the lower crime figures to a “robust surveillance camera system that covers RT’s stations and all RT trains and buses.” (RFH)

Howell has at least as much experience as any of the other candidates.

Also an engineer and president of a civil and corrosion engineering-consulting firm, Howell has served as a Folsom city councilwoman since 1998, and spent four years prior on the Planning Commission. She feels the successes in

Folsom—especially its thriving business community and its pedestrian and bike friendly streets—are virtues that should be shared with the rest of the district.

Stanley feels her two decades with the Folsom Cordova school district have kept her up close and personal with children, families and pressing social issues, such

as poverty and substance abuse, from a comparatively broad geographical region.

Off-duty sheriff’s deputies loaned out to outside schools are getting a pay bump.

On January 12, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors renewed an agreement between its sheriff’s department and two roseville-based school districts to assign off-duty deputies to provide campus security at elementary and high school campuses in neighboring Placer County.

The agreement with the Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District and Roseville Joint Union High School District calls for uniformed deputies to be paid $48 an hour, up from $38.47 under the previous agreement. Off-duty program managers will see their hourly wage increase from $46.55 an hour to $58 an hour.

Under the safe schools Program, deputies have been performing this service at several districts within the county since 1989, a staff report says. Negotiations with the Roseville districts began in 2010.

According to a county staff report, the “three primary functions of the Safe Schools Program are: (1) providing an immediate response to school emergencies and incidents, (2) to exemplify pro-active law enforcement involvement with presentations on drug and gang awareness, and (3) to provide a deterrent effect through highly visible patrol service.” (RFH)

Jobs, business, the economy—these are always big election issues, and all four District 4 candidates say they have a plan.

Stanley says her main campaign focus will be on streamlining economic development by removing unnecessary permitting hurdles. The idea, says Stanley—who owns a law firm and co-owns a brewery, Lockdown Brewing Co.— is to make it easier for new businesses to get started and for young ones to grow.

“I’ve seen a lot of issues with high permitting fees, and with the fact that people can’t get simple things done in a short period of time, and that they often don’t have a single point of contact to help them,” she said.

She says she faced exasperating permitting bureaucracy when trying to open a tasting room with her brewery in 2014. She even submitted a conditional-use permit application, along with a $5,000 processing fee, to one department before someone in another department informed her the permit wasn’t needed. Stanley received only some of the money back.

“I want to develop a one-day, one-stop permitting process,” she said. The current system is so inefficient, she said, “because nobody handles everything in one spot.”

Moreover, fees are exorbitant, she claims: The county fee for a residential solar permit is almost $600—about 10 times the same fee set by the city of Sacramento. “I would like to see … fees that match the costs of approving or denying things,” she wrote in an email exchange with SN&R. Helping the homeless population and substance abusers is hindered by similar systemic inefficiencies, Stanley says, with police officers generally lacking training or tools for how to effectively deal with these people.

Frost wants to hook law enforcement agencies, lawmakers and housing advocates up with dedicated nonprofits to better help homeless people find services and housing.

“Government can’t do it all,” she said.

“There are nonprofits whose whole goal in life is to help the underserved community, and they do it better. Let’s help them.”

Miller’s top focus as a candidate is fiscal stability.

“If we don’t have money, we can’t increase public safety or improve quality of life,” he said, adding that equipping police officers and training them takes money. He noted that Citrus Heights has an impressive record in the face of economic turbulence: During the slump of 2008

to 2012, the city was the only one in the region, he says, that didn’t lay off an employee. Miller says that’s because the government—partly under his direction—had been looking ahead and saving money in a “rainy day fund” for just such an emergency.

Similar thriftiness at the county level could help other communities better withstand the shock of future economic temblors, he says.

Howell considers public safety a concern and wants more funding to be provided for the sheriff’s department, which faces the burden of providing services in unincorporated, relatively remote communities that don’t have their own police departments.

MacGlashan, who sits as chairperson of the board of supervisors during her final year, was first elected as District 4 supervisor in 2004.

She was re-elected twice and, by the end of her current term, will have served 12 years. She has become known for her fiscally conservative stances on the board, and received praise from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, the American Planning Association and the North State Building Industry Association.

When the local development and building industry fought back against a 2004 county law mandating that developers include housing for low-income residents to battle poverty and segregation, MacGlashan and other supervisors supported the developers by hamstringing the ordinance. She drew criticism from SN&R for this, as well as for her conservative stance on medical marijuana—specifically, leading an effort to ban cultivation in the county.

Frost concedes she has less experience in politics than the other candidates but that she doesn’t see herself as a politician, per se. She is clear that jobs in government are not careers but, rather, are a public service.

“That means we can never forget who we work for,” Frost said. “When voting or responding to issues, we should be thinking about how it’s going to impact the people we represent, not just how to keep ourselves in favor with the special interests.”

Frost, like the competitors, has raised very little so far, with only $18,887 in her campaign coffers last year. Stanley has raised just less than $18,000. Howell has earned $7,000 since November, and Miller is just getting started but aims to bring in $200,000. Ω

New bill of rights Advocates want local governments to categorize crimes against homeless people as hate crimes

Homeless protesters still occupied the sidewalk along Ninth Street as a press conference began in front of City Hall this past Thursday morning. They chanted “House keys, not handcuffs,” a response to the more than a dozen arrests and anti-camping ordinance citations by police since New Year’s Day. But the Sacramento Regional Coalition to End Homelessness, the organization that held the press conference last week, says homeless people don’t just experience law-enforcement harassment: According to a report by SRCEH and WIND Youth Services, a nonprofit that provides outreach to homeless youth, discrimination of homeless by many groups other than cops is on the rise.

Their solution: They want local governments to categorize crimes against homeless people as hate crimes.

“I think the main thing we need to do is declare homeless people a protected class just like the gay and lesbian community, people of color and people with disabilities,” SRCEH executive director Bob Erlenbusch told SN&R. “When there’s an attack on a person of color, or gay, or whatever, that’s considered a hate crime.

And that’s what we want.”

According to the recently released SRCEH report, 75 percent of the 297 homeless youth and adults that they surveyed often suffered harassment and discrimination by not just law enforcement, but also medical and housing providers and the community at large.

Erlenbusch says that in order to aid the homeless, a local bill of rights needs to be put in place to protect homeless people.

“The reality of having a homeless bill of rights for homeless people in our community is that our leaders would be saying, both at the city level and the county level, that, ‘We protect people out on the streets until we can build enough affordable housing,’” Erlenbusch said.

The city spends $14 million a year on homelessness issues. But Erlenbusch questioned the need to spend money on, for instance, the nearly 50 police officers, some in riot gear, that disrupted a seemingly peaceful homeless protest in the early hours of New Year’s Day. “It cost a lot of money, and we are saying, ‘Put that money into housing [for homeless],’” he said.

City electeds did not respond to SN&R’s requests to discuss issues in this story by deadline.

City officials and police officers say that they’ve handed out fliers with information on places that provide shelter to the homeless protesters at City Hall. Many of the activists argue the barriers to entry at shelters are too high, or there aren’t available beds.

Meanwhile, another recent study by SRCEH looked at violence on Sacramento’s streets. According to the report, nearly 25 percent of homeless deaths in the past 13 years recorded by the Sacramento County Coroner’s office were caused by blunt-force trauma, gunshot wounds, stabbing or hanging. Ω

For your dietary needs: Remember that new vegetarian cafe in Midtown, spotlighted in the V Word last week? It’s softly open now, and there are lots of options for both vegans and gluten-free eaters.

Veg (2431 J Street) replaced Level Up Lounge, the space above Thai Basil. Same owners, new concept and new aesthetic. The dark purple walls and neon lights are gone, and unlike Level Up, Veg can take advantage of the abundant natural light. The redesigned look is cozy and bright, with several different rooms offering different seating styles. Local art pieces and bohemian light fixtures are nice touches as well.

Veg serves breakfast and lunch— though it may stay open later on weekends—along with coffee, tea,

beer, wine and a few cocktails. The latter include a spin on a bloody mary, with Thai basil, lemongrass and sea salt bitters ($9), and Zeal vanilla pine kombucha with gin, lemon and hibiscus ($9).

The menu includes classic veggie cafe offerings but also Thai- and Indian-influenced fare: Thai-style steamed eggs with tofu, mushrooms, fried garlic and shallots with grilled flatbread ($8); samosas with a sweet chili plum sauce ($8); and naan pizza topped with roasted veggies and curry ($8).

Expansive: Two local restaurants opened new locations this month.

at YD Tofu House, though; the two Korean restaurant menus are identical. The new location’s interior looks clean and contemporary, like the more grown-up older sibling to YD House on Folsom Boulevard.

Over in Davis, Hot Italian (500 First Street) softly opened part of its new outpost. The space that used to be the Melt is now open, though the expansion into the former Verizon store isn’t complete yet. Offerings and prices are the same as Midtown, but more limited.

Kudos: A new restaurant with a do-gooder concept opened in Rancho Cordova: Angel Platters A Village Cafe (2931 Sunrise Avenue, Suite 100). It hires its staff through nonprofit agencies, aiming to help those who have suffered unemployment get back into the workforce. Also, the simple, traditional American breakfast and lunch options are unusually affordable.

For example, a three-egg California omelet with avocado, mushrooms, cheese and spinach costs $7 and a BLT plus side goes for $5. Ω

Whole30 this. Paelo that. Macrobiotic everything. Right now everyone seems to be on trendy diets that claim science but without the benefit of, well, facts (no peppers or tomatoes—LOL, what?).

How’s this for a hypothesis: Eat simple and fresh. The Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op’s Madame Curie juice concoction ($6.25 for 16 ounces) makes for a good start. This ruby red drink blends carrot and beet juices with lemon, garlic and ginger. The taste is slightly sweet with a pulled-straight-from-the-ground earthiness and gentle spicy kick. Need further experimentation?

Ask for extra ginger for immune-system bolstering.

Scales on scales CHERIMOYA Looking for something a little different? Keep an eye out for round green fruits with armadillo-like skin. These scaly looking things are cherimoyas, native to South America but grown in California since the late 1800s. Also known as custard apples, cherimoyas are creamy white inside with inedible black seeds. Choose fruits that give a little, like a ripe mango. Slice them in half and scoop out the sweet vanillascented flesh with a spoon. Pureed cherimoya makes a delicious tropical sorbet, or you can freeze halved fruits and eat them as is.

In the 1970s, a communist regime attempted to wipe out Cambodian culture. Books were burned, temples destroyed and artists executed. But, thanks in part to refugees who fled the country, the cuisine survived.

Mora Som grew up in a refugee household, nourished by her mom’s Cambodian cooking.

The flavor is characterized by kroeung, a blend of lemongrass, lime leaves, galangal, turmeric, garlic, shallots and chilies pounded into a paste.

After Som graduated from UC Davis, she visited Cambodia for the first time.

She took cooking classes, learned about Cambodian ingredients and practiced traditional recipes. The experience compelled her to ignore her psychology degree and launch one of the few Sacramento restaurants that serve Cambodian fare. Taste of Angkor opened its doors just shy of one year ago.

The menu offers a mix of other Southeast Asian dishes—Lao, Thai, Mien and Vietnamese—and traditional Cambodian offerings. Recipes all come from Som’s mom or friends’ moms. That means they may differ from what you found in restaurants on vacation in Cambodia or Laos, but that doesn’t mean they’re not legit.

Take the amok trey ($12.95). Order it in Cambodia and you’ll likely get a delicate piece of catfish coated with kroeung and coconut milk, wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed. Taste of Angkor’s version is decidedly more homey and comforting, with the same flavors swimming in a bowl instead. It’s also an easy entry-level dish, for anyone hesitant about trying a brand-new cuisine.

On the flip side, only adventurous eaters should order anything with prahok, Cambodian fermented

fish paste. But if you do, you’ll be rewarded with prahok ktiss ($11.95): ground chicken simmered with prahok, coconut milk, peanuts, kroeung and green peppercorns, served with a medley of raw vegetables. Essentially, it’s meat dip. Amazing, craveable meat dip that’s funky, tangy and slightly spicy. I have never tasted anything quite like it.

Prahok appears again in an herby, pungent dipping sauce for grilled steak in sach koh tuk prahok ($10.95). My medium-rare steak unfortunately arrived medium-well, thinly sliced and dried out. No delicious sauce could save it. Cambodian specialty sach koh lok lak ($9.95) proved a bit disappointing as well. Thin slices of beef are doused in a sweet soy sauce and served salad-style.

It lacked any depth of flavor, and the side of limepepper sauce overpowered with sourness.

Taste of Angkor’s non-Cambodian dishes are far from throwaways, though. The soups, in particular, are impressive and well-priced. The Lao soup kapoon ($6.75-$7.95) is fantastic, with thick rice noodles, generous shreds of chicken, quail eggs and a fragrant coconut broth. It shines with a gorgeous and potent veneer of red curry. The beef curry soup ($9.95) is a prime, cozy winter option, with a deeply savory flavor similar to Japanese curry, tender chunks of beef and peanuts for crunch. You can and should order it with baguette, per the Vietnamese. Then there’s the Mien noodle dish, mee ka thang ($8.25), which also happens to be one of the few things you can request as vegetarian on the menu. Luckily, it’s tasty: fresh, wide rice noodles with sweet soy sauce-flavored gravy, crisp veggies and a fried egg on top.

One dish that’s caused an uproar is the Cambodian pho ($6.75-$7.95), because pho is not Cambodian. Som said Cambodian customers have told her the name alone is “disgraceful,” and surely some Vietnamese would scoff at its combo of oxtail broth, beef, tripe and shrimp. But the preparation is clean, nuanced and satisfying. We could debate issues of cultural appropriation forever, or we could appreciate that these are family recipes, family history and a mere taste of a nearly destroyed part of the world. Ω

Essentially, prahok is meat dip. Amazing, craveable meat dip.

Get out of the city, widen your culinary horizons and connect to agriculture— your options are much greater than a farm or Napa Valley vineyard. Over in Yolo County, there’s an olive oil class with Nancy Ash, one of the most respected olive oil tasting experts in the country and the owner of Strictly Olive Oil. The lesson begins at the Séka Hills Olive Mill & Tasting Room (196326 County Road 78 in Brooks) with a guided tasting of California and international extra virgin olive oils, plus food pairings and a mill tour. It goes from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Bring on the vegan fest

BY SHOKA Hankerings for a festival that shows off the (delicious) power of vegetables will soon be satiated, thanks to the SacTown VegFest. Not to be confused with the Sacramento Vegfest, which was put on by the Del Paso Boulevard Partnership in recent years (but MIA in 2015), the SacTown VegFest is a Sacramento Vegetarian Society production and takes place Saturday, January 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Serna Center (5735 47th Avenue). This allvegan festival has the de rigueur

bullet points: food vendors with free samples, educational presentations, activities for kiddos and live music.

The keynote speaker is Kristie Middleton, food policy director of the Humane Society of the United States. Scientists will be presenting, too, including Dr. Rosane Oliveira, a veterinarian and founding director of the UC Davis Integrative Medicine Program, whose website says, “Chocolate Has Its Very Own Holiday!” Well, that’s a good sign.

The Motherf**ker With the Hat—yep, that’s the title of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ raw, crass, brash, in-your-face play about members of the underclass striving to survive. Currently at Big Idea Theatre, this story of a paroled drug dealer trying to stay straight, is intense, funny and full of fucks—both literal and figurative.

The characters are all struggling in purgatory and hells of their own makings but sincerely trying to better themselves. Jackie (Brandon Lancaster, whose intensity fills the stage) is just out of prison and trying to re-establish a relationship with his girlfriend Veronica (Imani Mitchell, in an impressive, gritty portrayal), a street survivor who wants to “put the ghetto on hold” but is still caught up in her addictions.

Swirling in the mix is Jackie’s AA sponsor and honorable dude Ralph (James Ralph Ellison III), Ralph’s put-upon girlfriend (Kellie Yvonne Raines), and Jackie’s sweet yet vindictive cousin Julio (Lee Anthony Williams, a great comic relief).

There is talk of street codes and loyalty creeds, but there are cracks and flips in these allegiances, providing some of the most dramatic moments in the story. It’s alternatively sad, desperate, funny, shocking and touching—with damaged characters, violent tendencies and strange senses of honor—all portrayed with strong language and storylines that never feel gratuitous.

The impressive cast is flawless with a palpable chemistry between all of them. And all are under the watchful direction of Katie Rubin who keeps her cast focused, appropriately fidgety and strangely endearing despite their characters’ flaws. Ω

3 Echo Location It’s another world premiere for the B Street Theatre. This time it’s St. Louis playwright Carter W. Lewis’s Echo Location, a one-act, 90-minute comedy with dark overtones directed

by Buck Busfield.

The play revolves around Benjamin Rindell, an English professor, his African-American fiancée Emmy (Mary Lynne Robinson), the unexpected arrival of Allison, a 15-year-old daughter he never knew he had (Sarah Grodsky), and Emmy’s former boyfriend, Bluetooth Atkinson (Oge Agulue), trying to get his woman back.

There are problems with this play, starting with the lack of back story. (How did Emmy and Benjamin fall in love so quickly that they are going to be married before she has even moved her stuff out of Bluetooth’s home?) I also had difficulty with what seems to be an excessively brutal end to the show.

In between there, however, is a growing, if grudging, affection for Allison (the sweetest moment in the show), a final ending of the relationship between Emmy and Bluetooth, resolution of the angst that has been eating away at Benjamin for weeks, and a happy, if bloody, ever after.

It may not be the “hilarious” show that’s been advertised, but thanks to the fine performances of the four actors, it’s decidedly enjoyable—and the set by Sam Reno is gorgeous.

Janis Stevens and Michael J. Asberry star in this odd-couple drama about a crotchety old white woman and the AfricanAmerican man who is hired to be her chauffeur. Ismail inherently knows what to do with this story, and what we see on stage is powerful and touching.

Anomalisa Emotional malaise? Check.

In order to become fully realized as a film, the harsh metaphysical whimsy of a Charlie Kaufman script requires an equally visionary visual collaborator.

Many critics loved Kaufman’s 2008 directorial debut Synecdoche, New York, but I could never get past the film’s pushiness and oppressive visual space. It felt as though he missed the cinematic panache of directors like Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich and Adaptation) and Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

In the stop-motion animated mind-blower Anomalisa, Kaufman finds another visionary collaborator in co-director Duke Johnson, best known for his work on Moral Orel. This is Kaufman’s first foray into stop-motion animation, and yet Anomalisa is a distinctly Kaufman-esque film.

From its gorgeous opening shot of a commercial airplane gliding through a birth-canal sky, the camera pulling back to reveal the inside of a different plane, the film captures the fluidity between the real and the surreal, and between insides and outsides.

Customer service expert Michael Stone (voiced by David Thewlis) sits in the plane, traveling to Cincinnati to deliver a lecture based on his book, How May I Help You Help Them? Despite his vocation, Michael can barely tolerate dealing with other people.

He’s deeply depressed and disconnected, overweight and alcoholic, middle-aged and miserable, overly touchy and bored out of his mind.

Even worse: every voice that he hears sounds like the exact same person, whether it’s the asthmatic taxi driver or the hotel bar waitress or William Powell and Carole Lombard in My Man Godfrey. When the horribly self-involved Michael hears the unique voice of mousy

customer service rep Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh, reminding us with this film and The Hateful Eight that she’s one of most fearless and rigorous movie actors of all time), he thinks she may hold the key to his happiness.

The great character actor Tom Noonan provides every voice in the film besides Michael and Lisa, a narrative gimmick that places us squarely inside of Michael’s storm-cloud subconscious. It helps that Kaufman and Johnson craft a universe of richly detailed banality, exploring the dimensions of the upscale Cincinnati hotel where most of the action takes place with winding tracking shots and patient long takes.

And in the greatest sex scene in recent memory, Kaufman and Johnson eschew the oblique editing, candlelit writhing and inane sheet-grabbing of the standard movie sex scene in favor of a realistically awkward real-time sequence.

It’s something that we rarely get in movies—a moment of true vulnerability and physical intimacy between ordinary, out-of-shape people … and it’s all puppets. It’s miraculous.

Despite the inherent unreality of the stop-motion world, the details of the film are breathtakingly human, such as the moment where Michael’s still-wounded ex-girlfriend tucks her hands inside of her sweater sleeves. Achingly real and morosely absurd, Anomalisa is a masterpiece of emotional malaise and metaphysical disconnection, vivid and remote like a waking dream. Ω

The Big Short

Director and co-screenwriter Adam McKay (Step Brothers) bungles a great opportunity to savage the architects of the 2008 financial crisis in The Big Short, wasting an A-list ensemble cast in the process. Steve Carell, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling play various tenuously related members of the finance industry, men who made made a killing by betting against the housing market, which at that point had superficially swelled to record highs.

All of the elements are in place for a lacerating satire, but almost every aesthetic choice in the film is bad, from the U-Turn-era Oliver Stone visuals to Carell’s sketch-comedy performance to the cheeky cutaways where Selena Gomez and Anthony Bourdain explain complex financial concepts. After a brutal opening half, it finally settles into a groove, and there’s a queasy charge in watching a credit-drunk America walking towards that cliff’s edge, but not enough to save the film. D.B.

Concussion

In this blandly efficient biopic from writer-director Peter Landesman (Parkland), Will Smith dials down his energy level to play Bennet Omalu, the Nigerian-born forensic pathologist (and current UC Davis professor) whose groundbreaking study on long-term brain trauma in football players got challenged and suppressed by the NFL. On a purely thematic level, Concussion fits nicely with the documentaries Happy Valley and The Hunting Ground as the final third in a football-is-the-root-of-all-evil trilogy, but as a drama it’s dead-eyed and unresponsive. Smith gives a fine lead performance, peeling away his usual affectations to expose his natural charm, but Omalu never becomes a fully developed character. The wonderful Gugu Mbatha-Raw is totally wasted as Omalu’s wife, but there are solid supporting turns from Albert Brooks and David Morse, among others. D.B.

Daddy’s Home

A straight-arrow, earnest and well-meaning but slightly dull stepfather (Will Ferrell) finds his cozy life turned insideout when his wife’s freewheeling bad-boy ex-husband (Mark Wahlberg) blows into town, dazzling the kids and making stepdad look even duller. The visit escalates into a testosteronepowered pissing contest, with each man trying to out-alpha-male the other. The script by Brian Burns, John Morris and director Sean Anders has promise, and Anders grapples with a good cast (including Linda Cardellini as Ferrell’s wife, Thomas Haden Church as his boss and Hannibal Buress as a freeloading handyman). There are a few good laughs scattered about, but with these stars it should have been a lot funnier—and Thomas Haden Church shouldn’t have gotten most of the funniest lines. J.L.

The Danish Girl

Director Tom Hooper and writer Lucinda Coxon present a measured adaptation of David Ebershoff’s novel, which fictionalized the true story of Lili Elbe (Eddie Redmayne)—born Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener—who in 1930 became one of the first persons, maybe the very first, to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

The movie focuses on the understandably complex relationship between Wegener/Elbe and his/her wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander), and Redmayne and Vikander share an earnest screen rapport. Hooper and Coxon honor Elbe (who died in 1931 from complications of her fourth and final surgery) as a pioneer of the transgender movement, but reverent as the movie is, it’s also rather dreary—the kind of embalmed, oversolemn opus where the actors whisper their lines slowly, one word at a time. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

Director Michael Bay and writer Chuck Hogan, adapting Mitchell Zuckoff’s nonfiction book, recount the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi that left four Americans dead, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. The movie focuses on two CIA operatives caught in the battle: one of the slain, Tyrone Woods (James Badge Dale), and a pseudonymous survivor played by John Krasinski. Tense and riveting, here’s the movie some of us never knew Michael Bay had in him—the action, when it starts, is paradoxically both chaotic and clear. There’s a palpable sense of the sunscorched uncertainty of the Lybian street, where the Americans are never entirely sure who is friend and who is foe. Dale gives what could, with luck, turn out to be a star-making performance, with Krasinski not far behind. J.L.

an overture of Ennio Morricone’s score and a 12-minute intermission. Therefore, audiences may be surprised that the widescreen photography in The Hateful Eight is much more focused on the contours of a single interior space than on wide-open exterior spaces. Long-time Tarantino leading man Samuel L. Jackson stars as Major Marquis Warren, a merciless bounty hunter in post-Civil War-era Wyoming waiting out a blizzard with a den of scoundrels (including Kurt Russell, Tim Roth and Bruce Dern), all of whom seem to be concealing a secret. The first half is nearly perfect, a slow build of pinprick tension, and while the second half gets a little repetitive, it’s also where the brilliant Jennifer Jason Leigh is at her no-holds-barred, bloodsoaked best. Joy

Yikes. Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle director David O. Russell reassembles much of his stock company (Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro) and most of his stock mannerisms (Scorseseian camera moves and song cues, nonsensical exuberance) for this extremely loose biopic about the inventor of the Miracle Mop. Joy is all forced smiles—it feels like an album made by a band that should have broken up years ago, just a rambling and incoherent series of unmotivated actions and overemphatic gestures. Everyone gets points for gusto, especially Lawrence as a single mother holding together her wacky family while navigating a booby-trapped business world, but every scene feels like an undirected rehearsal, so the actors are left to screech their way through two hours of face-palming embarrassment. I never imagined I could dislike Isabella Rossellini in anything, but here we are. D.B.

Norm of the North

A talking polar bear (Rob Schneider), alarmed at the threat to his arctic habitat from an evil developer (a hyper-caffeinated Ken Jeong) planning to build upscale condos, travels to New York to protest; once there, he’s mistaken for an actor in a bear suit and becomes a media celebrity. Daniel Altiere, Steven Altiere and Malcolm T. Goldman’s script has no story, just a fuzzy environmentalist hook (polar bears!) and a mad rush of warmed-over ideas from slightly better animated movies, thrown at us in a desperate hope that something will

stick. Nothing does; the movie is a shapeless mess that lands with a pathetic thud. Director Trevor Wall isn’t ready for the big screen; his animation is cheesy and gimcrack, more suited to the straight-to-DVD bargain bin that is the movie’s true destination. J.L.

The Revenant

Much like the previous collaboration of director Alejandro González Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, last year’s Best Picture winner Birdman, the gruesome adventure The Revenant is heavy on visual gimmickry and pulses with an aggravating energy, but also feels strangely empty and unnecessary. Leonardo DiCaprio clearly suffers for his art here, whether submerging himself in ice cold water or climbing inside of a horse carcass for warmth, but although the film works as a visceral experience, on the whole it’s a frustrating mess. There are is a change jar of messages regarding the pitiless beauty of nature and the savagery of man, but Iñárritu only knows how to lay it on thick, so it amounts to a lot of puffed-up finger-wagging. More than anything, Iñárritu excels at hectoring and exhausting his audience, and The Revenant is no exception—he’s good at grinding you to a nub, and not much else. D.B.

Ride Along 2

An Atlanta cop (Ice Cube) and his yapping future brother-in-law (Kevin Hart) travel to Miami to find a computer hacker (Ken Jeong) who may be able to lead them to a big-time drugs-and-arms trafficker (Benjamin Bratt). The script by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi has about as much logic and dramatic conviction as a Three Stooges short, but things like that are beside the point. Everybody plays straight man to Hart, who here is more grating and less funny than he was two years ago in the first Ride Along—and not nearly as good or as funny as he can be; his constant chatter has an air of desperate vamping to keep us from noticing the gaps in the plot. Ice Cube is as stoic as he was before, and Olivia Munn as a Miami cop adds a pleasant touch. Bruce McGill and Tyrese Gibson contribute fly-by cameos. J.L.

Irish luck: It might seem odd to think about St. Patrick’s Day in January, but the New Year does kick off the countdown to the greenest and most Irish of holidays. It also means the fifth year of Irishpalooza, which brought kilts and tin whistles to Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub on Friday night.

First on stage was Whiskey and Stitches. There were some tonal, sound and balance issues, and the band just wasn’t gelling. It also felt very middle-of-the-road; it didn’t blow me away, but didn’t do anything to horribly turn me off, either.

Next up was One Eyed Reilly, my favorite of the night. It made for a drastic change as soon as the band took the stage. One Eyed Reilly was a storm that sometimes got out of control, but mostly in a good way.

Fiddle player St. John Fraser, however, stole the show, and while the band may only have one eye, it seemed to have two identities.

The fast and furious instrumental sections were great, but the band needs to find a way to better combine those with its lyrical verses so the transitions aren’t quite as jarring.

Reilly also covered Charlie Daniel’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” not an easy task in itself, especially at the tempo the band took the song at. It takes a brave and ambitious band to attempt that song, and sure enough, sometimes things went by too fast, notes weren’t perfectly clear or a bow missed the strings—but the group is aiming high and was more successful than not. And it was bunch of fun, either way.

Finally, the Pikeys took the stage and managed to hit not one, but two of my concert-reviewing pet peeves in its cover-heavy set. First; there is never any reason for a megaphone.

Never. Ever. Second, don’t have a music stand and read lyrics.

Concerts aren’t karaoke—come on, now. But, the Pikeys managed to finish strong, even if this wasn’t my favorite flavor on the Irish rock spectrum.

Rockers and cuties: The Kelps headlined a great, mostly local show at Naked Lounge last Friday. The turnout was solid, with a core group of kids in the front dancing, going crazy and singing along to every single song.

Over time, the Kelps become darker and louder, evidenced by its opening tunes that walked a thin line between visceral rock ’n’ roll and brainy cabaret tunes. Lead singer Cory Barringer belted out each song with rage, abandon and a little bit of humor. Topics covered in their set included a couple of break-up songs, a tune about Barringer losing his faith in God and one about a homeless prostitute. The opener was about a pornographer.

Las Pesadillas’ Noah Nelson started the night out with a mellow acoustic set. In this context, his songs brought to mind a storytelling folk singer in a smoky Greenwich Village coffee house. He closed his set with a very cool rendition of David Bowie’s “The Bewlay Brothers.” How appropriate.

The only out-of-town band of the night was the Portland, Ore., duo There is No Mountain. The coupleact has a very distinct, eerie sound that’s almost Beat Happening at its most primal—but sprinkled with a lot of subtle complexities.

Their setup included drums— just a floor tom, a snare and a shaker—and an acoustic guitar plugged into a gigantic effects pedal board. Husband-and-wife team Kali Giaritta and Matt Harmon create striking harmonies that are gorgeous one moment, haunting the next. But on this night the most interesting thing was how the instrumental sections sounded when they jammed out. The acoustic guitarist even shredded, sort of.

The members of There Is No Mountain are good friends with the Kelps. They’ve shared several bills here in Sacramento over the years.

They even have a game they play in the car while they’re on tour, where they try to determine which one of the Kelps is the cutest.

“I can never decide,” Harmon said.

The band quickly COUNTRY ascended to headliner status playing rooms like the 600-person capacity Great American Music Hall, where they notso-coincidentally play the night before this Auburn soiree. Fans of bluegrass, Americana and everything within a couple points of separation need attend this show, as it will be one of the last for an indefinite amount of time. Opening the show are The Sumner Brothers and Jonny Mojo & Friends.

Chicano Batman leads its fans back to the roots of music with its blend of cumbia, ’60s tropicalia, samba, psych, funk and even lush moments of slow-jam SOUL soul. Besides its multigenre reputation, this Los Angeles-based quartet also encompasses a variety of rhythms, styles and cultures into its musical stash. In its fourth album, Cycles of Existential Rhyme, Chicano Batman rides the waves of surf rock, cruises through moments of Latin origins and fuses all 14 tracks smoothly between what feels like more changes than a James Brown showcase. STARLITE LOUNGE, 7 P.M., $10 Emo has been creeping back into the national music scene. Fortunately, new bands are influenced more by the underground emo bands of the ’90s like American Football and Cap’n Jazz rather than whatever was happening the decade after. Free Throw hails from Nashville and brings an extreme range of dynamics. More importantly, it brings a loose, down-home groove that is refreshing and highlights the profound vulnerability of the band and its tortured, beautiful EMO vocals. There are elements of ’90s punk and alternative rock in there too, particularly a subtle overtone of early Weezer.

HARLOW’S RESTAURANT & NIGHTCLUB, 9 P.M., $25-$30 Rapper and civil rights activist Talib Kweli has been putting out records since the ’90s as a member of Black HIP HOP Star, alongside Mos Def, and Reflection Eternal, with producer Hi-Tek. His living legacy includes full albums with producers like Madlib and 9th Wonder, and tracks produced by Just Blaze, Will.i.am, the Neptunes and Kanye West. His latest record, Indie 500, is another 9th Wonder production, but expect Kweli to run the career gamut and likely spark a freestyle session. He’s been one of the best rap live performers for over a decade.

After racking up six Grammy nominations as a renowned jazz vocalist, Luciana Souza has decided to change things up a bit—she’s nearly forgone the whole concept of singing recognizable words. Souza describes Speaking in Tongues, released in the fall of last year, as a “musical inquiry into language and conversation,” and it is accordingly experimental and intriguing. There are actually two tracks with lyrBRAZILLIAN JAZZ ics, but they make you question the concept of what a song really is.

Rin Tin Tiger has a new album out called Burial Grounds—a self-described cross between Bob Dylan, Violent Femmes and Tupac. That Tupac reference is a bit off, but Dylan and Violent Femmes is right on. The trio brings back the days of INDIE ROCK old-school alternative rock, with a brainy, not-always-in-tune-butalways-heartfelt lead singer carrying the tunes. There’s a strong blues influence, and the songs are primarily distorted. The folktinge on the band’s earlier work is nearly gone at this point, but the social commentary is that much more powerful as a result, and the music is darker and more tense.

Can California cities and counties really ban marijuana delivery services?

—Roland A. Blount Of course they can. When it comes to marijuana, cities can pretty much do whatever they want. However, creating a ban and enforcing a ban are two different things. As we have demonstrated time and time again, when there is a battle between cannabis and prohibition, weed always wins.

Last week, we mentioned the giant “ban wagon” just about every city and county outside of the larger metropolitan districts has jumped aboard. Legislators all over the state, aided and abetted and egged on by the League of California Cities, are enacting bans on cultivation, storefront dispensaries and even delivery services. There have been some victories: The city of Marina rejected a proposed ordinance that would have banned marijuana in favor of redrafting to allow licensed growth and delivery, and Santa Rosa turned down a ban so it would keep its current regulation with an eye toward creating even cooler rules. (Way to go, Santa Rosa!) Meanwhile, Long Beach banned cultivation and storefronts, but will allow delivery. There are a few more successes, but honestly, the prohibitionists are having a field day with bans.

But are all of these bans practical? How are you going to stop people from driving around with weed in their car? Medical cannabis patients can possess up to 8 ounces, so it would be hard to prove intent to sell unless you caught someone in the act. I guess the police could set up a sting operation, but is that really the best use of police time and resources? Didn’t a cop from Yuba County just get busted for attempting to sell 200 pounds of weed in Pennsylvania? Looking at you, Chris Heath (http://tinyurl.com/calicopbusted). My Laws are point is: If they can’t stop their own guy supposed to from driving around with a yang of weed (and where did he get the weed?), how make things are they going to stop someone with a few better. ounces? These bans are unenforceable.

I asked my friend James Anthony, Oakland-based cannabis zoning lawyer supreme, about these delivery bans and he made a good point: Delivery services are a natural free-market reaction to the banning of storefront medical cannabis dispensaries. He’s right.

Hey, all you legislators, listen up: You can’t stop weed.

Prohibition is never the answer (I know, I said the same thing last week. People don’t listen is my point). It is way past time for cities and counties to stop being dicks about this issue. Weed isn’t going anywhere, so these politicians need to start making good decisions for their constituents. Medical cannabis clubs don’t increase crime, they increase jobs and revenue. Growing weed isn’t a threat to anyone’s health. In fact, growing medicinal weed in California isn’t even a crime anymore, thanks to the ruling from Kirby v. County of Fresno (http://tinyurl.com/kirbyvfresno). The only thing these bans will accomplish is a worsening of the status quo. Laws are supposed to make things better. Ω

“What I think is so beautiful about this medicine is not only are there different ways of consuming it, different forms of cannabis can be used in different ways,” says Shelby, spokesperson at the House of Organics, a dispensary in Sacramento.

“I don’t know of any other medicine out there that has that much versatility.”

What are the different options?

• Smoking — lighting up a cigarette, pipe or water pipe.

• Vaporizing — inhaling cannabis ignited at a lower temperature.

• Edibles — food products (baked goods, candies, snacks, even pizza) made with cannabis.

• Topicals — skin products containing active ingredients from cannabis (cannabinoids).

• Sublinguals — tinctures, or extracts, placed under the tongue.

• Extracts — wax of hash oil that can be smoked, vaporized, put in topicals or used sublingually.

Not every strain and form works with every medical condition. Thus, while there’s an element of personal preference, a patient may not have all options available.

could potentially be a Golden Age of Friendship … a State of Grace for Your Web of Connections … a Lucky Streak for Collaborative Efforts. What can you do to ensure that these cosmic tendencies will actually be fulfilled? Try this: Deepen and refine your approach to schmoozing. Figure out what favors would be most fun for you to bestow, and bestow them. Don’t socialize aimlessly with random gadabouts, but rather gravitate toward people with whom you share high ideals and strong intentions.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): On a clear day, if

you stand at the summit of Costa Rica’s Mount Irazú, you can see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It’s not hard to get there. You can hop a tourist bus in the nearby city of San José, and be 11,200 feet high two hours later. This is a good model for your next assignment: Head off on a stress-free jaunt to a place that affords you a vast vista. If you can’t literally do that, at least slip away to a fun sanctuary where you’ll be inspired to think big thoughts about your long-range prospects. You need a break from everything that shrinks or numbs you.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): A filmmaker working

on a major movie typically shoots no more than four pages of the script per day. A director for a TV show may shoot eight pages. But I suspect that the story of your life in the near future may barrel through the equivalent of 20 pages of script every 24 hours. The next chapter is especially action-packed. The plot twists and mood swings will be coming at a rapid clip. This doesn’t have to be a problem as long as you are primed for high adventure. How? Take good care of your basic physical and emotional needs so you’ll be in top shape to enjoy the boisterous ride.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): The city of Paris

offers formal tours of its vast sewer system.

Commenting at an online travel site, one tourist gave the experience five stars. “It’s a great change of pace from museums full of art,” she wrote. Another visitor said, “It’s an interesting detour from the cultural overload that Paris can present.” According to a third, “There is a slight smell but it isn’t overpowering. It’s a fascinating look at how Paris handles wastewater treatment and clean water supply.” I bring this up, Cancerian, because now is a favorable time for you to take a break from bright, shiny pleasures and embark on a tour of your psyche’s subterranean maze. Regard it not as a scary challenge, but as a fact-finding exploration. What strategies do you have in place to deal with the messy, broken, secret stuff in your life? Take an inventory.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “When I look at a sunset,

I don’t say, ‘Soften the orange a little on the right hand corner, and put a bit more purple in the cloud color.’” Pioneering psychologist Carl Rogers was describing the way he observed the world. “I don’t try to control a sunset,” he continued. “I watch it with awe.” He had a similar view about people. “One of the most satisfying experiences,” he said, “is just fully to appreciate an individual in the same way I appreciate a sunset.” Your assignment, Leo, is to try out Rogers’ approach. Eroticized vegan Think veganism is asexual?

Sacramento resident Linda Middlesworth kind of agrees. The 71-year-old aerobics instructor and cancer survivor recently claimed top female honors in PETA’s Sexiest Vegan Over 50 contest. (Yeah, that exists.)

But she says this is just PETA’s way of scintillating media interest for its pet causes. Well, color us fooled.

Maybe that’s why this Q&A skips around from PETA purity tests to a questionable list of celebrity vegans.

Matt who? And all throughout, Middlesworth insists she never saw this coming. “I thought there was no chance of me winning, at all,” she says. “It was literally a shockeroo.”

We think she doth protest too much.

How did you hear about this contest?

Well, I knew they had this contest every year. I never dreamed I would be in it. …

One of my friends said, “Why don’t you run for that?” And I said, “Oh, that’s ridiculous, I could never win that.” … And I did it kind of reluctantly because, for one thing, I’m not real fond of the sexy part, because really it’s about compassion and activism. That’s what it’s really about, but they use that because it gets people’s attention.

It got ours.

Yeah, I knew! Everyone who’s a compassionate eater or person is sexy to me. There’s no difference. (Laughs.)

Everyone’s sexy who cares about something besides themselves, you know?

What was the— It’s a worldwide contest, though.

Worldwide?

Yeah.

I thought it was domestic.

I’m in shock too. Really, I’m in shock too.

I think I had the same initial reaction as you: “Isn’t it ironic that PETA is treating you like a piece of meat?”

Yeah, but it’s not really, because they’re using it to get media attention. … It’s just like they have the—you know, you can take six months of showers or eat one hamburger for the same amount of water—they have people nude behind a shower curtain to get the media.

What was the process like?

I’m not even sure when it started, but it felt like a very long time [that] everybody

had to keep voting for you every single day. And so I would say to my friends, “I hate to ask you this, but can you vote for me more than once?” (Laughs.) I guess they did because I won.

Well, for about a week. And then a week later, I found out about the animals. One week after doing it for my health, I found out by reading Peter Singer’s book Animal Liberation. That was it. And then it was the animals more than my own health. I mean, I wanted both. … I had heart disease. I had all this stuff. But I got rid of it by changing my own food.

The actual process of applying, what did you have to submit?

There was a series of questions. … And I answered all the right way. And then there was, submit a photo. … Let’s see, what else? They had a phone call with me, asking me questions, too.

Do you mind me asking what type of cancer?

So like a vegan fidelity test.

Well, they preferred that I understood the whole animal-advocacy position of our activism, because it’s really about that. It’s not just about, well, it is about veganism, because veganism automatically means you care about animals, if you are vegan.

The word “vegan” came [from] Donald Watson in 1944, which is the year I was born. He decided the word “vegetarian” just didn’t cut it, because people were eating fish and eggs and dairy.

Got it. It’s not like there’s an evening gown portion.

(Laughs.) No, no. In fact, it’s very little to do with how you look. … I have a lot of passion for this movement. It’s the largest social-justice movement of our time, since the abolition of slavery.

You became a vegan 27 years ago and, at the time, it was motivated by health reasons?

I had thyroid cancer. … I’m pretty sure that’s why I had cancer, because of all the dairy I was eating. … I teach people how to replace the meat, dairy and eggs and have it taste wonderfully. … Lots of famous people are now vegan, which really helps, like Bill Clinton, Michelle Pfeiffer, Woody Harrelson and Ellen DeGeneres. … And then we have Matt what’s-his-name? He did that movie The Martian.

Matt Damon?

Yeah, Matt Damon’s a vegan. Ben Affleck is vegan. [Author’s note: While Damon says he supports veganism, neither he nor Affleck are vegan.] So you have all these famous people who are really helping the whole movement move forward.
