The real K.J. problem The biggest threat to K.J.’s political future?

It’s K.J. This idea of Mayor Kevin Johnson as his own worst enemy isn’t new.

Back in 2008, Cosmo Garvin inked a cover story titled “K.J. vs. K.J.,” about how the then-candidate— and his skeletons, his ego-driven proclivities—was himself the biggest obstacle to success.

This gets more true every year.

Strong mayor? Johnson couldn’t give up on his dream of executive power, but voters said no, thanks.

Sexual-harassment accusations?

Yes, again: A City Hall staffer accused the mayor of repeated and unwanted advances, and it appears that there might have been some kind of financial settlement.

Acting above the law? Of course!

The mayor deleted text messages pertaining to the Kings arena deal, even though the city attorney directed Johnson to retain the texts.

And, now, hiding secretive emails from the public?

You probably heard that the mayor sued SN&R last week. There’s a lot more on this weird situation in this issue. But the most significant thing that we now know, thanks to a court hearing last week, is that the mayor and his staff have been lying.

We now know that the mayor and his staff use private Gmail accounts for public business, and that they’re keeping these thousands of emails secret, which is in violation of the California Public Records Act. What prompted the mayor to switch over to Gmail? What is he hiding in those emails? Why won’t he be transparent and turn those emails over as part of public-records requests? We deserve answers. Not more power grabs, ego trips, harassment and secrets.

But I doubt we’ll get any answers soon. K.J.? He only answers to K.J. And that’s his biggest problem.

Re “Sex, vice and suffering” by Raheem F. Hosseini (SN&R Feature Story, July 2): Thank you for your excellent article about sex workers. I am an ex-sex worker from Sacramento beginning in 1976. My story is on Oprah Ambassador of Hope, and I am the winner of William Randolph Hearst Award for Outstanding Achievement at Sacramento State. Who would have thought a 30-year veteran prostitute could accomplish such things? I know these women stuck in the “life” have treasures and gifts that money cannot buy, once they are able to find their voice. Your article brought humanity and light to the issue of sex workers and their plights. Thank you again.

‘It is what it is ’ Why Kevin Johnson sued SN&R, what we learned—and what happens next

he mayor is completely open and transparent.” That’s what Mayor Kevin Johnson’s spokesman Ben Sosenko told the TV cameras and reporters gathered outside Sacramento Superior Court Room 44 last week.

Shortly before that, Sosenko flatly refused to answer any of SN&R’s questions about the mayor’s use of private emails to do city business. He made it clear that he didn’t intend to answer any of SN&R’s questions any time soon, either.

“It is what it is,” he said with a smirk.

Regular readers know that, last week, Johnson took SN&R and the city of Sacramento to court, in order to block the city from releasing about 100 emails, which the mayor says are protected by attorney-client privilege (read about the lawsuit on SN&R’s Page Burner blog at http://tinyurl.com/ KJlawsuit).

But the bigger story may be that, thanks to Johnson’s lawsuit, we now know that the mayor has actually failed to turn over thousands of emails from his private Gmail accounts.

Those emails were sent by city employees, doing city business, and aren’t protected by attorney-client privilege.

Outside the courtroom, SN&R attorney Thomas Burke told the gathered media that Johnson’s use of private email accounts is a way to get around the California Public Records Act. “There’s no way to check whether or not you have access to everything that they’re doing in the public’s business,” Burke said.

Sosenko wouldn’t talk to SN&R, but assured the other reporters gathered that the Gmail accounts, which use “OMKJ” for “Office of Mayor Kevin Johnson” in the address, were no problem, because “the private email accounts are used for things that are not city business.”

Not even remotely true: The OMKJ emails accounts are routinely used for city business.

To take just a few examples: Johnson and his staff used outside emails extensively to discuss strategy for the 2013 arena deal. Other OMKJ emails obtained by SN&R show Sosenko responding to an article in the Bee about an anti-gang program, and developing talking points for remarks Johnson made to Sacramento police officers about the unrest in Ferguson, Mo. By using these outside accounts, Johnson has effectively short-circuited California’s public-records law. And no one on the city council, or the city manager or city attorney, seems willing to do anything about it.

Back in March, SN&R requested any emails sent and received using the set of special “OMKJ” Gmail accounts used by the mayor’s staff (see “Special delivery” by Cosmo Garvin, SN&R News, April 23, at http://tiny url.com/KJsecretemail). In mid-June, the Bee asked for emails related to Johnson’s dealings with the National Conference of Black Mayors.

They asked for these because, last year, Johnson used city staff to mount a “coup”—his BEFORE

attorney’s words—in that organization. And, not surprisingly, the whole thing devolved into lawsuits and a nasty bankruptcy fight, which are ongoing (see “K.J. Inc. strikes again,” SN&R Bites, June 11, at http://tinyurl.com/ KJincstrikesagain).

The Sacramento city attorney was reviewing records related to both media requests and found about 100 emails between the mayor’s office and the law firm Ballard Spahr, which is representing Johnson in the legal fight over NCBM. Even though the emails potentially contained attorney-client communication, the city attorney decided there wasn’t a clear legal basis to withhold the records from the two newspapers. Instead, the city attorney contacted Ballard Spahr and let them know that, “absent a court order,” the records would be released.

The Bee’s position was that the city attorney should do its job and determine what’s privileged and what’s not. That’s essentially the same as SN&R’s position, though with less incredulous laughter.

And the Bee clarified in a later story that it never agreed to Ballard Spahr’s demand.

Unfortunately, they also wrote that, while the Bee was waiting for a determination from the city attorney, “The News & Review, however, was insisting on getting all of the emails right away, which is why Johnson went to court.”

Again, not true. Eventually, the Bee corrected this error. But it wasn’t the only media outlet to repeat the narrative of the bad, “stubborn” SN&R that Team K.J. was pushing.

So why did SN&R get taken to court, even though it took the same position as the Bee, and even though the Bee was actually first in the queue to get its records? For the same reason SN&R is always singled out for special treatment by the mayor’s office.

As Sosenko says: It is what it is.

So the real story may not be the hundreds of emails that Kevin Johnson is trying to hide, but the thousands of emails he is already hiding.

SN&R didn’t know about any of this at the time. And SN&R has never asked for any records that legitimately fell under attorneyclient privilege.

But as outlined in last week’s Bites column, Ballard Spahr made an explicit threat to SN&R: Change your public-records request or get sued.

That seemed to us at SN&R like a terrible idea. We didn’t know which, if any, of the emails really contained attorney-client privilege communication, or if such a side-agreement would be used to hide records that really ought to have been disclosed.

At that time, Ballard Spahr attorney David Pittinsky said that The Sacramento Bee had agreed to his demands right away, and that if SN&R wouldn’t fold, “We’ll be forced to litigate with you alone.”

Assistant City Attorney Michael Benner also told SN&R at this time that the city was due to release records to The Sacramento Bee sometime in early July. SN&R would get a batch of emails at some undetermined date in the future.

But in its court filings, Ballard Spahr said SN&R “stubbornly refused” to modify its public-records request, while the reasonable Sacramento Bee complied.

That’s not true. Bee reporter Marissa Lang wrote in an email to Ballard Spahr that “we’ve decided that any emails independently found by the city attorney to fall under attorney-client

agreed—that the city should provide a “privilege log” of the emails that Johnson wants to keep private.

The log would contain at least some information about the sender and receiver of each email, and the newspapers—and any member of the public—can use this info to challenge the assertion of attorney-client privilege. If an agreement can’t be made, it’s back to court.

According to the city attorney, all of the emails in question came from OMKJ Gmail accounts, but were copied, forwarded or sent directly to “cityofsacramento.org” accounts.

That’s how they wound up on city servers.

So, there’s an argument to be had about whether attorney-client privilege was waived, since those emails were forwarded around to other city employees.

K.J.’s attorney also claims to be asserting attorney-client privilege on behalf of the National Conference of Black Mayors.

Not true, according to the NCBM board of directors.

On July 2—the same day K.J. took SN&R to court—the NCBM board passed a resolution saying Ballard Spahr does not represent the organization, and has no right to assert attorneyclient privilege. The NCBM board has also asked that the emails be released to the public.

But, as Ballard Spahr attorney Peter Haviland noted, control of NCBM is currently being disputed in two court cases in Atlanta.

Again, SN&R never asked to receive emails that are legitimately protected from public disclosure by the attorney-client privilege.

SN&R did ask for all emails from the OMKJ Gmail accounts, because they are emails between city employees doing city business.

That’s obvious from the content of those emails, and also from the letters “OMKJ”—for “Office of Mayor Kevin Johnson”—right there in the email addresses.

What we didn’t know, until Johnson took SN&R to court, is that there are many more emails from Johnson’s OMKJ accounts, probably thousands, that have nothing to do with NCBM, and that contain no attorney-client privileged information, which the mayor is refusing to turn over.

Wendy Klock-Johnson is assistant city clerk and the city’s main public-records wrangler.

She said that in response to SN&R’s records request the city clerk had conducted a search on city servers for emails from the OMKJ accounts. Next, the city clerk’s office asked the mayor’s office for emails from those OMKJ Gmail accounts.

Little by little, SN&R started to receive batches of emails, a few hundred pages at a time. As the first batches of emails arrived, it seemed like the mayor’s office was complying with SN&R’s public records request. Craig Powell with the city watchdog group Eye on Sacramento even praised the mayor for his openness and transparency.

But City Attorney James Sanchez let the cat out of the bag in court last week: The mayor’s office never actually sent any emails to the city clerk in response to her request. The only emails disclosed to SN&R were those that had just happened to wind up on city servers.

There have been some comparisons made between Johnson’s use of private email accounts and Hillary Clinton’s email scandal.

Clinton also used outside email accounts, and outside servers, for U.S. Department of State business. The difference is that, after the media made a fuss, Clinton and the state department started releasing all of those emails to the public.

By contrast, Sacramento’s “completely open and transparent” mayor is keeping most of his emails hidden.

But he’s not the only one. In 2013, the Santa Clara County Superior Court ruled that all emails used by San Jose city officials to conduct city business—even if they are sent using personal phones and private email accounts—were subject to the California Public Records Act. But a year later, the Sixth District Court of Appeal overturned the ruling, and now the case is before the California Supreme Court.

Sacramento city officials say there’s no policy requiring city employees to use city email accounts for city business. And, absent some action by the city council or California Supreme Court, there’s nothing requiring Johnson to make public the emails from his “Office of Mayor Kevin Johnson” Gmail accounts.

So the real story may not be the hundreds of emails that Johnson is trying to hide, but the thousands of emails he is already hiding.

Good government’s greatest hits We’ve opined and spent more than a few barrels of ink discussing 915 I Street in this Editorial space. Yet here we are, again, talking about City Hall and its issues when it comes to transparency, accountability and good government. These conversations invariably lead back to Mayor Kevin Johnson’s office. Here we go again.

Oftentimes, it feels as if we’re writing editorials that go straight into a black hole. But then, occasionally, we see the journalism in this paper impacting positive change. To that end, this week feels like the right time to revisit some of our City Hall editorials from recent months, a proverbial “Greatest Hits” from SN&R’s editorial board.

So, let’s start with the issue du jour: Johnson using private Gmail accounts for public business. This issue is new to many Sacramentans.

But writers at this paper have put K.J.’s Gmails in the cross hairs for a while now.

We first dinged K.J. for his Gmail use in April, writing that “Mayor Kevin Johnson and his staff’s use of private email when conducting public business … is a problem.” (See “K.J., Hillary, email,” SN&R Editorial, April 30, at http://tinyurl.com/ SacramentoEmailPolicy.)

Trust in local government is at a low.

The mayor dodges transparency by using secret and private email addresses to perform public work.

This may be legal in California for now—the courts are hashing it out—but just because it’s legal doesn’t make it right.

As we also wrote back in April, “The city needs to stop this practice of allowing private email for public work, and should implement a policy directing staff as soon as possible.” It’s been more than two months since we wrote this, and the mayor’s secret Gmail has spurred even more problems—and legal costs—for the city.

If this all sounds familiar, it’s because Hillary Clinton, when she was secretary of state, also used private email and servers despite working as a public official. The hammer came down on Clinton this past February— but apparently the mayor did not pay much attention.

Email controversies abound at City Hall, another being the plan to delete older emails, ones between city workers that are simple, “transitory” communications older than two years.

We’re fine with getting rid of old conversations, emails about where to eat lunch and what’s happening over the weekend. But the city is placing a tremendous amount of trust in its employees, who will be relied upon to determine which emails are crucial and which can be deleted. That policy is worrisome.

As we wrote in February, “Allowing the digital output of our public servants to disappear into the ether is bad for transparency, public access and journalistic or law-enforcement investigations.”

As reporter Joe Rubin noted in this issue (see page 17), the city plans to delete some 50 million emails as soon as possible. Eye on Sacramento, a local watchdog group, sued the city to stop “The Big Delete,” and on Tuesday a judge granted EOS a hold on any deletions until July 24.

With all the deleting of text messages and secret emails, harassment complaints and public-private confusion, an ethics commission would do wonders in ushering Sacramento out of this gray area and into the sunshine.

As we wrote in February: “[A] number of major cities have ethics commissions that operate locally to ensure that elected and appointed officials are operating within the purview of their offices and are not playing fast and loose with public money …

“Voters and taxpayers need to be assured that there is a watchdog in place, especially when so much of the city’s money is spent on development that will benefit private interests.”

Trust in local government is at a low. Council members, the city attorney and city manager haven’t made any moves to renew the public’s faith. So, it’s up to us, Sacramento: Now is the time to demand change, to ask for immediate ethics and goodgovernment reforms. Ω

Strong mayor. Weak mayor. Silly mayor.

We have had a bizarre week at SN&R, ever since learning that the mayor planned to take us to court. There’s been national coverage, including USA Today and the Los Angeles Times. Our website crashed from too much traffic. On Wednesday evening there were three local TV station vans parked outside our office. And even The Sacramento Bee, which usually ignores our existence, mentioned our name.

This all came from a simple public-records request, followed by Mayor Kevin Johnson’s nutty l

It was certainly a bold move. And the mayor likes to be bold. But perhaps he should have looked before he leapt.

According to the machine at Raley’s that measures your blood pressure, I have low blood pressure. But mention the word “lawsuit” and it instantly goes up. But although our newspapers regularly go after people and institutions with Expensive a lot of money and power, has, over the years, had lawsuits are like SN&R a comparatively small legal bill.

But expensive lawsuits are tuberculosis. like tuberculosis: Just because Just because you you have not had it yet does have not had it yet not mean it cannot kill you.

The problem with lawsuits, does not mean from my experience, is the Lawsuits routinely cost it cannot kill you. cost. hundreds of thousands of dollars. What I fear even more than losing a lawsuit is losing our company to pay the legal fees from a lawsuit.

Nevertheless, when I heard that the mayor had threatened us with a lawsuit, I assumed he was just trying to intimidate us.

But then I heard that the Bee, which had also filed a publicrecords request, had backed down. Frankly, I was concerned.

Why would the Bee, with a much larger checkbook than SN&R, roll over? Did they know something that I did not?

(It’s worth noting that, although the lawsuit claimed that The Sacramento Bee backed down, the Bee disputes this.)

Anyway, suddenly we were alone.

But we believed that the mayor’s case had no merit.

So we did not back down. And now, this case has created a media frenzy, and brought more attention to the very issue that the mayor probably hoped would go away.

Do not discard It’s really bad timing for the city to delete years’ worth of emails This week, the city of Sacramento says it will hit the delete button on a huge number of emails, those older than two years. How many emails by are we talking about? There could be hundreds Joe Rubin of thousands, even millions.

City Clerk Shirley Concolino said the city couldn’t tell the public exactly how many emails are on the chopping block: When she did a search of that size, it crashed the city’s computer system.

Eventually, they figured out the number: 54 million.

Watchdog group Eye on Sacramento called on the city last week to put a six-month moratorium on the new emaildeletion plan, until a more transparent solution can be worked out.

On Tuesday, a judge granted a stay until July 24.

This paper has repeatedly demanded that the city hit pause on the plan as well, and instead hold public discussions on how to manage city records. The Sacramento Bee, in an editorial last week, also opined that the planned deletion was “a huge mistake,” especially as the city grapples with ethics issues.

Despite all this opposition, the city attorney told SN&R last Thursday that he thinks the new policy is a good one, and that they’re moving forward.

Concolino says the mass erasure is legal because the emails being dumped are unimportant records. The city is calling these emails “transitory,” or non-essential communications, and insists that their disappearance will not impact transparency or public-records requests.

But the problem with that argument, according to Erik Schmidt, policy director for Eye on Sacramento, is that the city is counting on employees to decide what emails need to be retained and which ones to delete.

“If an employee has years of emails, how are they supposed to remember what

emails are important?” he asked. “The city is also depending on every single employee to be honest and to retain any questionable or incriminating emails.” (See Mayor Kevin Johnson deleting arena-related text messages even though he was directed not to.)

Without access to emails older than two years, my job as an investigative reporter becomes a lot more challenging.

For instance, my reporting last year on the city’s half-billion-dollar water-meter install

implementing its new email policy. Paul Nicholas Boylan, who has successfully argued dozens of public-records cases in California courts, filed a motion Friday in district court. On behalf of Eye on Sacramento, he is asking that a judge grant a temporary restraining order to prevent the deletions.

Boylan is confident that a judge will grant the injunction. “The California Constitution states bluntly that the people have the right to access the writings of public officials. How can the public access any of these rights if an agency is going to destroy a trove of these records after just two years?

That kind of environment encourages backroom deals in cigar filled rooms. It invites corruption,” he told SN&R. He also explained that statutes do give local governments the ability to destroy some documents after two years.

Many credit the reporting we did here at SN&R on the watermeter project as having saved ratepayers at least $65 million in unnecessary spending. So, with all the reasons to support transparency and to keep emails accessible, what’s with the rush to delete a huge archive? A judge may be asking the same question this week. And what’s ultimately decided could have a big impact across California as other cities decide how best to handle their email archives. Ω

A K.J. listicle Nine things that burn in your brain when Mayor Kevin Johnson sues you This week was at once weird, unexpected, electric and head-scratching. We got sued by the mayor, what the hell is going on? Only a listicle will do. And, so: Nine things that by burn in your brain when K.J. sues you.

1. Wait, did we really just get sued by K.J.? Our attorney reassured us that Johnson’s attorneys likely wouldn’t follow through with their threat of litigation. Why would they? Journalists enjoy a legal right to newsgathering, including the request of public records.

It’d be supremely dumb for them to sue us. And yet, it happened.

2. Why didn’t the Bee tell the mayor’s lawyer to buzz off? The mayor’s attorney, David Pittinsky, threatened our writer Cosmo Garvin and Marissa Lang, a reporter at The Sacramento Bee. This attorney was clearly harassing these journalists. Garvin, what with his zero-tolerance policy for empty threats and white-collar intimidation, ultimately ignored Pittinsky. But Lang sort of acquiesced to Pittinsky’s demand, even writing the polite, “Let me know if there’s anything else you need from my end” on her email communique. (In her defense, Pittinsky then totally mischaracterized what she’d agreed to as part of the final lawsuit.) Still, why didn’t the Bee tell K.J.’s lawyer to go burn some popcorn?

Their decision is symptomatic of Scoopy’s soft spot when it comes to the mayor, and the Bee’s post-lawsuit coverage of the email shenanigans clearly suggests embarrassment at The Hive. (Read Rachel Leibrock’s essay on page 21.)

3. Someone in K.J.’s office actually gave this the thumbs-up? I keep imagining this scene as a Woody Allen film: K.J. (in mayoral library reading Nietzsche): “I’m sick of that pesky Cosmo Garvin digging in my emails. Have my attorneys do something about it.”

Staffer (polishing mayoral bust): “Sir, yes sir.”

In all seriousness, there’s clearly information in these emails that will impact the various National Conference of Black Mayors lawsuits. Ironically, suing SN&R makes it even more likely that those messages will see daylight.

4. Nobody seemed to care about K.J.’s private Gmails months ago when Cosmo Garvin was writing about it. What changed?

This paper’s been banging the drum about the mayor using secret Gmail accounts for public work for months. We served it up on a silver platter, comparing Johnson’s email practices to those of Hillary Clinton while Secretary of State (we even commissioned the sweet illustration on this page).

Yet not a peep from the Bee editorial board or any other news media outlet.

Until K.J. made the mistake of suing us—and now it’s front-page, 5 p.m. news.

Nice one, traditional media!

5. K.J. says his national profile is good for Sacramento. But how does a “coup” with a black mayors group benefit the 916? There was a PowerPoint presentation, prepared by city staff and emblazoned with the city of Sacramento official seal, titled “Annual Meeting ‘Coup.’” This was prepared for a meeting to brainstorm how Johnson could overtake the National Black Conference of Mayors, an admittedly embattled group with Lehman-esque financial woes. The mayor likes to say that his work across the country raises Sacramento’s profile. But how is shaking down the NCBM, what with a protracted legal battle involving an inordinate amount of staff hours, a good thing for the city?

6. K.J. won’t talk to SN&R any more, so what can I learn from his last interview with us, in 2012? It’s been nearly three years since I met face-to-face with the mayor, in November 2012, just after his re-election.

The second term’s four years are nearly up, and you have to wonder if he envisioned this type of attention going into the last year of Act 2. Probably not.

Journalists enjoy a legal right to newsgathering, including the request of public records. It’d be supremely dumb for them to sue us.

Back then, he said the one thing he hoped to accomplish in these four years was making Sacramento a leader in green tech and environmentalism. “So when you think of Sacramento, it’s the Emerald Valley.

It’s ‘Man, we lead in green jobs, we lead in green growth, we’re a hub for clean technology.’ This notion that we can transform Sacramento into the Emerald Valley.” Not so much.

Another fun flashback from that ’12 Q-and-A, this time on his vision for the new downtown mall: “It’s got to be outwardfacing, it’s got to have connectivity to the grid, to the rest of K Street.

“You can’t have it feel like it’s a fortress.”

Along came a Kings arena …

7. Who the heck upped K.J.’s staff payroll this year? The mayor hides his email on Gmail servers, deletes text messages despite admonition from the city attorney, partakes

in coups of national nonprofits and uses city staff for private fundraising. So, what does city council do? They expand his powers, giving him a cool $700,000 to hire more staffers. How does this happen?

8. Damn, I’m going to have to pore over some 500 email logs this month. Awesome?

Last Thursday during SN&R’s court appearance, we proposed the creation of what is called a “privilege log.” This document would account for the senders, receivers, time stamps and more for the approximately 100 emails in question.

That log is due imminently (except that Johnson’s attorneys are dragging their feet).

About those emails: “Out of an abundance of caution,” the city has now flagged nearly 500 emails as potentially private conversations between K.J. and his attorneys.

Who does the city work for, again?

(P.S. There goes my weekend.)

9. Will K.J. run again? Labor Day weekend.

It looms. And after Labor Day is when candidates typically begin rolling out their election plans. So, will the mayor run for a third term in 2016?

My Magic 8 Ball says, “Reply hazy, try again later.”

But if I had to place a bet, here’s how I see it playing out: Johnson takes his sweet, sweet time and doesn’t make an announcement until the new year. Council members Angelique Ashby and Steve Hansen are already in the ring. Ashby suspends her campaign. Enter K.J. vs. Hansen, the sequel.

I’ve got a headache just thinking about it. Ω

In 1994, Lindsay founded Another Choice, Another Chance, a nonprofit behavioral health treatment center that specializes in providing comprehensive individual, group and family treatment for youth involved with alcohol and drugs.

With a focus on youth ages 11 to 21, Lindsay and her team are dedicated to teaching families not only how to cope with and treat juvenile addiction, but how to prevent it.

When it comes to kids and drugs, Lindsay says the key to prevention is in health education. Her biggest piece of

advice is to teach children to eat healthy and exercise as early in their lives as possible.

“If a child grows up loving themselves and their body, they’re not going to want to put harmful substances in it.”

If youth do turn to drugs or alcohol, Lindsay says it is absolutely crucial not to judge them.

“How you react has a lot to do with their potential continued use,” she says. “All you can do is be supportive in finding out why they used.”

In her experience, Lindsay says parents are better able to address the problem and identify solutions if they talk with their children and first identify how and why they started using substances.

“You have to be authentic.

You can’t lie to children,” Lindsay says. “Kids can tell when they’re not getting the truth and they will look for it

Those sources are often peers with little direct experience with drugs, if any. And in many cases, what they understand about drug and alcohol use is incorrect, Lindsay says.

The best possible way for parents to keep their children drug-free is to be present with them as much as possible and be open and honest.

“Love your children the way they need to be loved,” she says.

On The Sacramento Bee’s soft spot for K.J.

This latest legal dust-up isn’t helping its reputation as a paper that’s friendly to a fault when it comes to the mayor.

All of which just makes The Sacramento Bee’s coverage of the lawsuit all the more, well, weird.

Take its initial report, for starters: After the news broke, the paper posted a short, unbylined brief on its website. That’s not necessarily the strange part; breaking news is a fast beast, surely the paper’s print version would be meatier.

Nope. The Bee’s July 2 print version of the story was buried on page A3, credited only to “Bee Metro Staff.”

How and why, exactly, did Bee editors decide this story wasn’t front-page news?

(Full disclosure: I worked at the Bee from 2000-09 as a features writer and have a pretty good idea of its newsroom politics. Getting bylined credit for a juicy city scandal story is a big, big deal.)

But the weirdness doesn’t stop there. There’s also the Bee’s mischaracterization of its own role.

The lawsuit states that the Bee “agreed that all privileged communications may be omitted from its public records request. The SNR, however, has refused to withdraw its request.”

The Bee’s coverage offered a different take, however. The July 2 print story contradicted the BEFORE

lawsuit’s claim, and the paper’s own prior claim, that editors had agreed to anything: “To expedite the remainder of the records request, The Bee said in an email that those attorney communications could be omitted … if the city independently determined they were privileged. Because the city determined they are not privileged, The Bee is still requesting those records.”

Makes sense.

However, a June 25 email from Bee reporter Marissa Lang to Johnson attorney David Pittinsky contradicts that assertion.

In the email, which was included as evidence in the lawsuit filing, Lang writes, “I spoke with my editors and our legal counsel and we’ve decided that any emails independently found by the city attorney to fall under attorney-client privilege can be omitted from the PRA request.”

In other words, the Bee agreed to Johnson’s demand to back off those emails.

The Bee also reported a different version of SN&R’s role. In a July 3 story—this one with a byline for veteran reporter Dale Kasler—it claimed SN&R refused to make a deal with Johnson’s attorney because we were “insisting on getting all the emails right away.”

The takeaway? The Bee’s approach has been professional and fair while SN&R has resorted to aggressive and unreasonable tactics. Or, as the lawsuit read, we’re being “stubborn.”

The only thing our paper has insisted upon is legal due process.

An email exchange with Bee editors eventually resulted in an online fix to that error—but no formal correction, in print or otherwise.

The Bee has been criticized before for its handling of Johnson’s various controversies, and this latest legal dust-up isn’t helping its reputation as a paper that’s friendly to a fault when it comes to the mayor.

Earlier this year, for example, an embarrassing exchange between Johnson and his attorney Kevin Dorso came to light after SN&R filed a records request for emails between the mayor and his staff.

“Met with [Sacramento Bee columnist] Marcos Breton today and put him in the dog house,” Dorso wrote to the mayor and staff in 2013. “He tried to back peddle [sic] saying it was just more neutral than negative. I hit him on this saying he needs to keep in mind his goals and focus on economic benefits of downtown development. He said he would do a better article Sunday.”

It’s a newspaper’s duty to investigate and accurately report. Whether the Bee’s revisionist take on the story is intentional, clearly it needs to spend less time worrying about its own image— or the mayor’s.

To do otherwise makes the Bee a gatekeeper for Johnson’s agenda instead of the public watchdog it’s supposed to be. Ω

It’s weird when news organizations become the news.

But that’s exactly what happened when Mayor Kevin Johnson filed a lawsuit against the city by and SN&R. As a result, Johnson sued to block the city’s release of said emails, citing attorney-client privilege—emails that the city attorney had already determined to be public record.

Weird.

Even taking SN&R out of the equation, the lawsuit is odd—and a pretty big deal. When was the last time (if ever) that a mayor sued his or her own city? When was the last time (if ever) that a mayor requested a restraining order against the city he or she governs?

News of Johnson’s landmark legal moves spread fast. By end of day Wednesday, all three major local TV news stations had visited SN&R’s Del Paso Boulevard headquarters to interview publisher Jeff vonKaenel. National outlets such as Deadspin, The Huffington Post and USA Today also picked up the story.

an undeveloped plot of land in Sacramento covered in thistle and dry grass, a handful of drones light up the summer sky with colorful LEDs. As they circle above the empty field on this Thursday night, a crowd of approximately 50 people, young and old, watches the makeshift aerial light show from a nearby parking lot, sipping drinks and barbecuing hot dogs. A small group of experienced pilots sport homemade black T-shirts that read “Flight Club.” A few feet away, young children play with radio-controlled cars on an empty street.

The scene makes for just one of many informal Sacramento-area gatherings for drone and model aircraft hobbyists. Others take place on different nights in Rocklin, Elk Grove and Roseville.

Here in Sacramento, passersby often see the lights and drones and stop to watch for a little while. Crowds of spectators always get bigger as the night goes on, explains Sean Wendland, a local drone enthusiast who created the Sacramento Area Parkflyers online forum about four years ago. This growing meetup is just one example of how fast drones have become popular both for commercial use and recreation.

And the trend has hardly reached peak altitude, Wendland says. Eventually, drones could become easily accessible, everyday recreation.

“Imagine, in the future, just like they have skate parks everywhere, they’ll have [drone] racing places with permanent tracks and everything all set up,” he says.

Actually, people don’t just have to imagine—they can check out the hobby this week when Wendland and other enthusiasts bring a drone racing event to the California State Fair. A collaborative effort between local drone experts, the State Fair and the Bay Area company Flying Grounds Inc., the 2015 U.S. National Drone Racing Championships will feature individuals and teams flying drones around and through obstacles at Bonney Field.

There will also be a combat fighting cage for drones and a freestyle flying competition.

It’s not all just fun and games, though.

Wendland and other local pilots will help monitor safety by making sure everyone

who’s registered actually has the skills to fly drones near spectators.

Mechanical devices flying throughout the air? The potential for trouble is big, Wendland says.

“We’re kind of like the safety marshals … or flight directors,” he says. “You could do quite a bit of damage with it if you think about it.”

Here at the Sacramento meetup, a middle-age man wades through the thick field of thistle.

He’s been looking for his lost drone for weeks. After a few hours of searching, he gives up in favor of watching the other pilots.

There’s probably a handful of other lost and ill-fated planes and model aircraft in that field, too, explains Wendland.

Some spectacular crashes are even caught on film. A recent YouTube video shows one member of Flight Club (a subset of Sacramento Area Parkflyers) flying a winged hobby aircraft in the Mather area when a hawk swoops in and attacks the device.

Another clip shows members of the Flight Club racing when a couple of planes knock into each other as a third flies in from behind and films the whole thing.

The first rule of Flight Club is—well, there aren’t really any. But drone safety is definitely important, because crashes do happen. Currently, drones are regulated by a mishmash of laws, and they’re different for

commercial pilots and hobbyists. Meanwhile, local enthusiasts have been trying to selfregulate—making sure to test aircraft before using them, not flying near full-size aircraft and not operating too close to people.

“Four years ago, before the [Federal Aviation Aadministration] even knew we existed, we were calling airports, figuring that stuff out,” says Wendland. “That’s one of the reasons we got called in to the nationals, [for] our expertise.”

But even without official commercial regulations in place—those are coming in 2016, according to the FAA—there is enormously large economic potential for drones.

They’re already being used in international warfare, search and rescue, journalism, photography and sports. The Chinese-based company SZ DJI Technology Co.—which makes a popular line of hobby drones called the Phantom—is worth $8 billion, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

People looking to tap into this new market can even take classes from Drone Universities, a nationwide school that is sponsoring the nationals and offers classes in Sacramento. Pilots earn an average of $50,000 to $60,000 a year—and up to $160,000 a year—according to Drone Universities teacher and blogger Sam Estrin.

But pilots trying out drones for the first time might want to save those tuition fees and start much smaller.

“I usually recommend that people go with a $30 or $40 toy that you can buy at Fry’s or RC Country,” says James Curtis, a pilot who

Back at the drone meetup, a number of people turn to look at one innovative plane in particular, all at the same time.

It hovers over the empty field using four small helicopter-like blades, then spreads its wings and takes off, flying just like a plane.

Someone in the crowd says it’s probably a drone they saw on Kickstarter a while back. It has two flight modes, explains Wendland: The wings help it cover long distances, and the copter blades allow it to hover for short periods. It’s exactly the type of drone he’s heard that Amazon is testing for mail deliveries.

Yet such companies that are testing drones like Google and Amazon—the latter which recently announced it’ll start trying drone deliveries next year—might have a hard time with FAA regulations.

The agency announced earlier this year that it plans to ban first-person view (FPV) BEFORE

“Oh god, you should see my son,” says Lautrup. “He’s 13—dude, he’s like ‘zip, zip, zip’ [with a drone].

They’ve got the video-game skills and it’s like a video game—with consequences.”

Wendland agrees.

“At the nationals, it’s going to be a little kid with a little quad copter who’s going to win, bar none,” adds Wendland.

Meanwhile, near the field of thistle, pilots continue to learn from each other, wait for FAA regulations and push the boundaries of what drones can do. A few years ago, the big innovation was getting small, powerful motors that could power an RC aircraft. Next, it’s going to be improving battery technology, says Wendland.

“Just imagine, basically, a world when drones are an accepted tool and used for everything they’re possibly used for. Then put yourself there, and think about where we go from there.” Ω

Then again, just next month, the FAA’s experimenting with allowing FPV for a publicity event that will allow unmanned aircraft to deliver medical supplies to a medical clinic in Virginia.

It’s also allowing companies like CNN to use FPV for coverage of events that are otherwise not filmable.

Whatever ends up happening with commercial industry regulations, it’s safe to say that today’s kids will probably take drones to the next level and imagine new uses for them—especially if they’re growing up playing with them as toys and attending drone universities.

is scheduled to race at the nationals. “Just get something to practice on and bash, to see if you’ve got the potential to work your way up from there—before immediately crashing like $400 worth of racing gear right out of the gates.”

Curtis, who’s been flying drones for about three years, says that even though it’s a relatively new sport, racing has attracted legions to the drone community.

To meet the increased demand, Wendland recently started talks with the Bay Areabased Aerial Sports League to bring regular racing events to Sacramento.

Before that, Curtis says the State Fair races will pit some of the best racers and teams in the country against local hobbyists as well as community inventors and tinkerers flying experimental builds.

“Someone in the drone community innovates one part of it, and somebody else will innovate another part of it” says pilot Jeff Lautrup. “Then you just gotta put it all together.”

It’s summer in Sacramento again, and for me that means three things: marathons of old Simpsons episodes, praying for death on account of the heat and ginger beer.

For those of you who are soft drink neophytes, ginger beer is a precursor to ginger ale, which has far more of the spicy rhizome’s flavor and in some cases a small amount of alcohol content. Making it during summer months makes sense because heat speeds up the fermentation process (yeast, like lizards and ice cream men, thrives in heat).

My process all started out as a failed attempt at making lager. Homebrewed fare is far more lab experiment than cooking. This will become evident if, like me, you do a shoddy job cleaning old Grolsch bottles for your cider to go in, only to come back a week later and smell something so rotten it could easily be weaponized by the military industrial complex. Or worse: you run into a multicolored fuzz on top of your wort which might be a new, stronger strain of the toxic mold Stachybotrys.

Brewing beer takes dedication and far more elbow grease than I will ever be able to dispense. For the weaker among us, there’s the far less laborious ginger beer.

Still, there’s no getting around cleaning glass bottles and everything that will touch the soon-to-be beer.

Lots of warm, soapy water and bleach (more than the Playboy Mansion probably goes through in a month) sanitize fancy flip-top bottles that used to house Lorina French Lemonade.

Next, the syrup that will flavor the beer is made with tons of grated ginger, lime juice and zest, and if I have it, an old vanilla bean. Once it’s boiled, it’s left to steep overnight.

The next morning, the golden syrup is strained through cheesecloth, an item you’re not allowed to own unless you’re over 60, but I have a few back channels.

Filtered water dilutes the syrup creating a flat beverage which would be suitable over ice if you’re impatient. A small amount of champagne yeast is awakened with a little warm water and added to the batch, which is carefully bottled.

Carefully in theory anyway; I’ve never been able to do accomplish this task without making a few gingerflavored puddles all over the kitchen floor, but the mess will be worth it in a few days.

The wait is the most difficult part of the process.

For two to three days, you’ll have to suffer through lesser beverages, probably full of caramel color and sodium benzoate, while the yeast convert some of the sugar in the drink into tasty bubbles.

Once they’re done, the drinks are allowed to settle in the fridge until chilled. The first bottle guzzled down, I present my craft toward the heavens and cry, “I made this with my hands!” There’s plenty of pride to be had when you’ve spent a week toiling over a simple drink.

My family still prefers Canada Dry.

Fine-art aviary A bird-themed body of work being shown at a place called Sparrow Gallery may sound like either the PAINTINGS ingredients for a fine-art aviary or a scratched Portlandia put-abird-on-it sketch, but Zach Timberlake’s paintings of creatures of flight do not aim for cutesy. The Sacramento-born artist’s portfolio contains successful examples of hyperrealism, and he applies that style to his feathered beast paintings, too, but he also allows his brushstrokes to stray into more expressionistic territory, resulting in more movement and less razor-sharp details of these unstill live beings.

Also on view at the gallery is work from Richard Ratcliff, who is known for creating the bronze sculpture in front of the Fox & Goose of the fox and goose. Yes, that’s right, another fine-art bird.

A full squinty circle

The grand-opening ceremony of the Warehouse Artist Lofts on the R Street Corridor was held back in April, and it recently hosted a rooftop concert with Appetite and Poppet. The cultural-hub GROUP SHOW domination and general buzz about this artist-centered mixed-use development continues with its inaugural WAL Public Market art show. Curated by Trisha Rhomberg, former co-owner of Bows & Arrows, the succinctly named First Show includes brightly colored pop-culture-influenced illustrations by Navid Dehghan (who is a WAL resident), watercolor landscapes by Erwo, mixed-media wall sculptures

by Stephanie Wickizer, and B-movie inspired paintings by Bekah Wilson.

Throughout the first half of the 1990s, Julian Faulkner’s paintings hung at the Michael Himovitz Gallery, one of Sacramento’s seminal art exhibition spaces. In 1997, the Himovitz moved from downtown to across the river at 1616 Del Paso Boulevard, but by 2001, the gallery shut its doors. It later became the address of other art venues, and currently, it’s the PAINTINGS home of Artspace1616, where Faulkner’s work—who hasn’t exhibited much since around the time the Himovitz ceased to be—will hang. There’s a full circle somewhere in there—if you squint a little.

If

you ever thought “I’d love to pet some baby goats, drink a pink wine slushie, and then hear Ashanti sing her 2002 hit ‘Foolish’”—your dreams have been answered, and then some. All of these things are possible at the California State Fair, which opens this Friday, July 10, and continues daily through Sunday, July 26.

Never been to the State Fair? Let’s just say it’s kind of like a cross between Disneyland, Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch and a Guy Fieri restaurant. (In fact, several Neverland Ranch rides have actually been featured at the State Fair in the past.) The point is, it’s a lot of fun, a little quirky and there’s a bunch of really unnecessarily calorie-heavy food.

For those who know how to do it right, it’s also an awesome local tradition. As we found out last year when SN&R interviewed a bunch of State Fair fanatics (see: “Confessions of a State Fair addict,” SN&R Feature Story, July 10, 2014), the annual event has plenty of activities for every kind of person. For people who love to shop, there’s all the stuff in the exposition buildings; there are rides for kids and thrill-seekers; food options galore (even some healthy options like veggie paninis from Jeanne’s Artichokes, Greek salads from Mediterranean Foods and fresh fruit from Pepe’s Fruit Cart and Egg Roll on a Stick); horse races; throwback musical acts (this year, that includes Morris Day and the Time, Ashanti and War).

There’s also new stuff happening. For example, check out drone racing on July 17 and 18 (see “Flight club” on page 22 for more information), a bunch of farm exhibitions, cooking competitions, and a couple of big international soccer games scheduled for Bonney Field during the fair. Or, don’t miss the pair of big international rugby matches.

Kernals by the slice summer Corn Pizza, selland’s market-Cafe Every month, Selland’s Market-Cafe adds a special pizza to its menu.

For July, it’s a colorful mix of fresh, summery flavors atop the restaurant’s delicious house-made crust.

The recipe is spot-on, with generous helpings of sweet corn and bunches of tangy roasted green chilies. Bright red onions and fresh cilantro add bursts of color and flavor. The highlight is the chorizo, and I wanted lots more—there were only a couple of little islands of sausage on each slice. At last: It’s a big week for long-awaited restaurant openings.

Magpie Cafe’s move to 16 Powerhouse is finally complete.

The restaurant has been open since Monday, serving the same beloved sandwiches at lunch and seasonal fare for dinner. The big changes come from the much bigger space. The warmness from the brick walls is gone; instead, the place feels slick and modern with a color palette of black, white and gold.

High ceilings, natural light and a tall bookcase of wine greet you as you walk in, while the spacious outdoor patio boasts artful wooden fixtures.

There’s also a legit bar—with seating and cocktails. The current cocktail menu features classics like BEFORE | NEWS

Manhattans, martinis and negronis as well as some specialties, like the Honey Shade ($5), a beer cocktail with housemade honey and mint.

If you’re ever feeling nostalgic, you can still hit up Magpie’s R Street location. It will operate as Nido by Magpie, a cafe serving pastries, breakfast sandwiches and the like.

Also on R Street, the Warehouse Artist Lofts Public Market is ready for its two mini-restaurants after months and months of teasing. Fish Face, from Kru’s Billy Ngo, and Metro Kitchen + Drinkery are both expected to be open by the weekend. Fish Face will offer grab-and-go sushi and— a probable first-of-its-kind concept in Sacramento—a poke bar. Poke is | F E AT U R E STORY

a Hawaiian salad, usually composed of some combo of raw fish, seaweed, soy sauce, sesame oil and other seasonings—and is highly addicting.

Metro will offer cold-pressed juice, kombucha, hard cider, unusual cocktails, coffee via Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters and health-focused eats.

Farm-to-fork closure: The G Street Shopping Center in Davis is sad because only three of its nine storefronts actually contain businesses.

And it’s about to get a whole lot sadder when one of those businesses, Monticello Seasonal Cuisine, closes in a matter of days.

Monticello was quite possibly the first real farm-to-fork restaurant in Davis when it opened four years ago.

One of the restaurant’s owners also operates Fiddlers Green Farm, which supplies most of Monticello’s produce.

But the restaurant has been wrestling with its landlords over environmental issues, culminating in an eviction notice and soon-to-ensue legal battle.

Monticello is hosting a few last-ditch fundraiser events for the restaurant and Fiddlers Green Farm through Sunday, July 12. Both will continue vending at the Davis Farmers Markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, respectively. Ω | A R T S & C U L T U R E

Summer in Sacramento practically requires porch sitting, so where better to sit and sip than The Porch?

Like its lesser cousin, the Long Island Iced Tea, this drink can sneak up on you. Don’t go gulping too many at lunch, or you’ll be napping in the shade of a magnolia tree before you know it.

Built to (not) spill The glory of this year’s Fourth of July holiday has already faded. But for Sacramentans who still feel like celebrating a historic nationalistic event, there’s always the French Revolution of 1789. And that comes with a peculiar display of French pomp: The Bastille Day Waiters’ Race (http://sacramentobastilleday.com), happening in Midtown on Sunday, July 12. Put on by the Handle District (http://thehandledistrict.com), the Parisian-inspired event features waitstaff of local restaurants speedwalking around a course for cash. The catch: They’re all holding a tray with a bottle of water and table glasses nearly filled to the top with water. The waiters can only use one hand to support the tray and can’t spill water, or they’re out. The winner earns $500, second place gets $250 and third place nabs $100. The race has been dominated by the waitstaff of the Grange for the past three years—can they continue the winning streak? T

here are medals, blue ribbons, trophies and cash to be won, but there is another prize up for grabs for everyone participating in the wide variety of competitions at Cal Expo: Knowledge.

This, says California Exposition & State Fair CEO Rick Pickering, is why competition has always been an integral part of fairs.

“It goes back to the historical roots of fairs,” Pickering says. “It was something that brought communities together. There was a competitive aspect to it, but it was also so people could learn from each other.”

Whether it was agricultural technology, wines or baked goods, state fair competitions were a good way to bring people together and then have the best ideas spread back throughout the state.

It also didn’t go unnoticed by commercial entities. Pickering points out that companies like Betty Crocker helped build their name by acquiring blue ribbon recipes.

At the 2015 Fair, there will be the traditional competitions in livestock, agricultural technology, wine, beer, cheese, baking, fine art and crafts. An added category this year is Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Cannabis is all over the place, and you’re finally getting a little interested in trying some for yourself. The problem is, just how is it that you actually roll a joint? And what the hell is CBD, and why does everybody get excited about a strain that reeks of cheese?

Obviously, you need to read more.

Green: A Field Guide to Marijuana (Chronicle Books Book LLC, $30) is a slick book made for those with just about no idea of what’s going on with cannabis. From intro lessons on different ways to partake in it to a breakdown of the differences between sativas and indicas, author Dan Michaels clearly lays out everything that you need to know to start getting lifted— assuming that you’re a patient, of course.

Beyond the introductory lessons, there’s an alphabetically arranged series of breakdowns on 170 strains, complete with notes on taste and on what sorts of high each strain delivers. Above all of that, there are incredibly detailed photos to accompany every listing, each picture pretty enough to make any seasoned stoner’s mouth water (or dry up, maybe).

The photography pairs with smooth and easy-to-skim design, making for a book that works as an art collection, a reference manual and as a leisurely read.

Assuming your roommate or significant other is cool with it being on display, you’d be hard pressed to find a better coffeetable book for quick browsing and starting awkward conversations with parents about your late-night habits.

The Explorers Club

Romeo and Juliet The Sacramento Shakespeare Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary of summer theater in Land Park by presenting two of the Bard’s most popular plays: by Patti Roberts Romeo and Juliet and As You Like It. The festival is going old school—like way back Elizabethan-era old school—with its production of the classic tale of two star-crossed lovers by presenting Romeo and Juliet the way theater was presented in Shakespeare’s day: with an all-male cast. Not only are all roles played by men (since women were banned from the stage in the 16th century,) but there are also bare-bones sets and live minstrels, which is also reminiscent of the simpler staging of yore.

Playwright Nell Benjamin’s farce is the kind of madcap comedy that B Street Theatre does better than anyone else. Buck Busfield directs an extremely talented ensemble cast in the broad comedy about an 1870s London men’s club of adventurers that is thrown into a tizzy when a woman is proposed for membership. This freewheeling, frequently physical farce retells Robert Louis Stevenson’s Gothic Victorian-era tale of good and evil through a satirical lens.

Everyone knows the story: The educated, upper-crust Dr. Jekyll invents a mysterious elixir that transforms him into the brutish Mr. Hyde, who drinks and terrorizes the town. What gets lost in modern adaptations—but not in this play— is that Jekyll actually enjoys releasing himself from the inhibitions of polite society.

Stevenson’s 1886 novella was a parable of the Victorian age, when wealthy men were public paragons of virtue, but often led very different private lives. George Bernard Shaw dealt with this duality in his 1893 play Mrs. Warren’s Profession; the businesslike Mrs. Warren runs a brothel, which the prominent men of the community patronize, but pretend they don’t.

Humboldt County playwright Lauren Wilson (who also wrote The Golden State, a spoof of California’s multicultural society, staged last year by this company) does a comic burlesque of the Hollywood clichés that now surround this Victorian tale. But simultaneously, Wilson is skewering the British class system, and the notion that the Brits had noble intentions as they colonized the world. Wilson even works in a few plugs for Scottish nationalism—remember, Stevenson was a proud Scot, never entirely content in London.

Actor Paj Crank is relentlessly energetic as Jekyll and Hyde, contorting himself as the elixir does its work. Zachary Coles (who just played the moody, artistic Edmund Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night) goes to the opposite theatrical pole with a satirical, tongue-in-cheek performance here. Lisa Halko plays wealthy Lady Throckmortonshire, who drinks Jekyll’s potion by accident and immediately lusts after women. Young Jordan Hayakawa plays good-and-evil twins: One carries a Bible, the other kicks men in the balls. Duality abounds throughout this show.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Charles Dickens died before he completed his final novel. This musical adaptation lets the audience vote at each performance, and pick the ending it prefers. Runaway Stage Productions’ Next to Normal plays at the West Sacramento Community Center Black Box Theatre from July 10 through August 16. This energetic rock musical won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama (only eight musicals have ever received that honor), and deals with a woman’s struggle with bipolar disorder. Her family tries to keep up appearances, but the weight of mental illness is a heavy load to bear. Though there is humor to be found in the show, the content gets pretty hefty—grief, drug abuse, suicide and complex relationships are layered upon an already difficult subject matter—and Runaway Stage gives the show an age recommendation of 16 years and older. To give the women in the summer troupe their fair share of stage time, As You Like It is being presented with an all-lady cast.

At first the all-male cast was apparent, not only because it’s unusual these days, but also because in the first couple of acts on opening weekend, the cast took some time to warm into their rhythms and roles. Chalk it up to the cast having no preview performances, dealing with a holiday weekend and a 6 p.m. start time on Sunday. However, the large cast gelled with strong performances by the end of the first half, and by the finale presented the audience with a strong, emotionally resonant tale of lovers paying the price for family feuds.

Sean Thomas Olivares presents the more traditional brash Romeo who is smitten with a young and impressionable Juliet, played by Zack Scovel. Scovel begins his portrayal of the young lass as a flighty teasing teen, but ends by fleshing out his performance with a heartbreaking soliloquy. Other notable performances were Tom Block as Tybalt, Ryan Canfield as Mercutio, Vernon Lewis as Frair Lawrence, Andrew Zelny as Paris, Anthony Person as the Prince and Bill Gilbert as the Nurse.

By stripping the stage bare and rising to the challenge of an all-male cast, director Christine Nicholson allows us to enjoy this classic in the classic sense—which highlights Shakespeare’s

Beyond rehab Amy Although largely eschewed by influential masters like Frederick Wiseman and the Maysles brothers, the talking-head interview has come to by Daniel Barnes dominate the documentary genre, especially in this post-Michael Moore age of the activist doc. It’s an easy narrative crutch, basically the same straight-to-camera explication technique used by every single reality show. This pedantic practice has become especially prevalent in the rock doc subgenre, with critics and contemporaries and acolytes often called upon by the film to testify to the “importance” of its own subject.

In the opening moments of the Kathleen Hanna documentary The Punk Singer, for example, a talking head assures us that Bikini Kill is indeed “the best band of all time.” Bikini Kill.

In recent years, however, a minibacklash has formed, and a lot of documentary filmmakers have begun phasing out static talking heads in favor of more inventive storytelling approaches. Already this year, we’ve seen the thought-provoking vérité of Amanda Wilder’s Approaching the Elephant, and the multimedia collage of Brett Morgen’s Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, which used the Nirvana singer’s notebooks and sound recordings and home movies to provide context and meaning to his life. Asif Kapadia’s Amy, a heartbreaking documentary about the self-destructive chanteuse Amy Winehouse, takes an approach that’s similar both to Montage of Heck and to Kapadia’s previous film Senna. Kapadia constructs Amy almost entirely from existing footage, only fleshing it out with audio testimony from the people closest to her, largely allowing Winehouse’s words and lyrics to tell her own tragic life story.

Viewers who only know Amy Winehouse as the miserable, makeup-smeared, drug-stained trainwreck of her final years will be shocked to see her as a fresh-faced, exuberant teenager in love with making music. Amy follows Winehouse from her early days as an out-of-time jazz singer through her extended “troubled ingénue” period, and finally to her breakthrough superstardom and long public meltdown.

Through it all, Winehouse’s lyrics serve as her voice, brutally sardonic autobiographical outlets

for her demons and desires that ring true right down to the part in “Rehab” where her father talks her out of kicking drugs (on an obviously related note, Winehouse’s father Mitch has condemned the film). Kapadia crafts a portrait of a fragile soul with a brash and outwardly confident personality, one that masked a self-loathing and vulnerability that was left easily exploited by her own inner circle.

“I don’t think I could handle it,” says a teenage Winehouse to an interviewer who questions her about celebrity, and yet the extremely personable and preternaturally gifted singer was on a collision course with stardom from the very beginning. She became as well known for her outsized personal style—tattoos, enormous bouffant, exaggerated eye makeup— and offstage antics as for her music, but there was always a strong confessional voice to her songwriting that instantly connected with people. Once her 2006 song “Rehab” became a breakthrough hit, however, things went downhill fast. An already prolific partyer, Amy retreated from the flashbulbs and roaring crowds by using hard drugs with her boyfriend and eventual husband Blake Fielder, becoming a magnet for paparazzi and beginning a cycle of rehab and remission that played out in the public eye.

It’s tempting to pit Amy and Montage of Heck against each other, not only because of their similar construction, but because of their similar subjects. Although they had different musical backgrounds, both Cobain and Winehouse grew up poor, were haunted

But where Montage of Heck scoops the meat out of Cobain’s tortured psyche, at times portraying him as not just filled with demons but genuinely demonic, Amy is more content to paint a simple picture of a troubled girl who got too famous too fast. Although Amy isn’t quite the daring and dispiriting triumph of Montage of Heck, it’s still an extremely powerful and emotionally resonant work, and a stirring testimony to the unique talent and unrealized potential of Amy Winehouse. Ω

The crisis and the conflict threaten to unravel the delicate balance of the girl’s personality, and how the emotions learn to adapt and work together form the core of the script by Meg LeFauve, Josh Cooley, and co-directors Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen. The result is joyously funny, as good as anything Pixar Studios has ever done. It explores subtle psychological concepts, playing with the limits of what children can absorb and, in the process, giving them—and adults—an insight into what makes them tick. J.L.

A Texas teenager (Josh Wiggins) and his parents (Thomas Haden Church, Lauren Graham) adopt the traumatized service dog of the family’s oldest son, a marine who’s been killed in Afghanistan (Robbie Amell). The boy senses that somehow, his brother’s supposed best friend (Luke Kleintank) is at the root of the dog’s trauma. The script by Sheldon Lettich and director Boaz Yakin doesn’t exactly hold water— it hinges on weapon-running but doesn’t explain how the weapons got from Afghanistan to Texas—and Yakin gets amateurish performances from some of the supporting cast (e.g., Dejon LaQuake as Wiggins’ best friend). Still, if you’re a sucker for a-boy-and-his-dog movies (and who isn’t?), this one is a passable enough example of the genre—though it’ll hardly make you forget Lassie Come Home or Old Yeller. J.L.

The first Mad Max movie in 30 years has Tom Hardy stepping in for Mel Gibson as the cop-turned-vigilante-loner roving a postapocalyptic world. Here our antihero teams up cautiously with a female warrior (Charlize Theron) as the two seek to escape from a savage warlord (Hugh Keays-Byrne), taking the tyrant’s five wives with them to freedom. The script by Brendan McCarthy, Nico Lathouris and director George Miller wastes little time on

The Overnight

Steven Soderbergh’s male stripper movie Magic Mike became a left-field hit in 2012, but the film’s runaway success was largely due to a shrewd marketing campaign that played up the girl’s-night-out sexiness, while Trojan horsing a smart, spare, deceptively stylish, distinctly Soderbergh-ian drama about workplace dehumanization. Gregory Jacobs’ cash-in sequel Magic Mike XXL, on the other hand, is the pandering, eager-to-please sex fantasy that most ticket buyers probably thought they were getting the first time around. Magic Mike is a film about stripping; Magic Mike XXL is a stripper.

All in all, Magic Mike XXL is still pretty fun for an unambitious cash-in sequel, more of a rollicking road comedy and omnibus performance movie this time, closer to an R-rated Step Up sequel than anything remotely Soderbergh-ian. The film coasts a long way on star Channing Tatum’s effortless charm; luckily, he has more than enough to spare. D.B.

The Overnight joins The D Train, While We’re Young and The Wedding Ringer (and many more) as yet another 2015 comedy that explores the sexual frustrations and embarrassments of straight white guys approaching middle age (note to self: write memoir, ignite Hollywood bidding war). Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling play a boring married couple who spend an unhinged night at the home of new neighbors Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche. As the night rages on, deeply guarded secrets are revealed—a sequence of two men with vastly different penis sizes dancing next to each other is the stuff of NSFW meme legend—and it becomes increasingly apparent that Schwartzman and Godrèche are playing a game of seduction. Writer-director Patrick Brice squeezes some nervous laughter out of the premise, but The Overnight is more naughty than funny, and it pulls back from the edge just when it should be leaping off. Bill Pohlad’s biopic about Brian Wilson takes a fairly bold approach, concurrently telling two stories of the Beach Boy’s troubled genius in two different eras, covering both his 1960s meltdown and his 1980s recovery.

It’s especially bold in that the two actors playing Wilson—Paul Dano in his youth and John Cusack in middle age—look absolutely nothing like each other, and yet they mesh seamlessly, like two instruments playing in different keys making an unexpectedly beautiful sound. Dano’s entire career of affected oddballs now feels like a mere warmup to playing the socially awkward young Wilson, and the scenes of Wilson crafting Pet Sounds, creating a masterpiece out of the sound collage of his subconscious, are utterly riveting.

The 1980s scenes aren’t quite as successful, but Cusack perfectly captures the ghostly sincerity of Wilson from that era, and there are fine supporting turns from Paul Giamatti and Elizabeth Banks. D.B.

In 1682 at the court of Louis XIV (Alan Rickman, who also directed), a widowed landscape artist (Kate Winslet) is hired by the king’s master gardener (Matthias Schoenaerts) to build an outdoor ballroom in the gardens at Versailles. The script by Jeremy Brock, Alison Deegan and Rickman tells us that romantic sparks fly between Winslet and Schoenaerts’ characters, that his philandering wife (Helen McCrory) wreaks vengeance by sabotaging their project and that Winslet harbors a dark, painful secret. But none of this is allowed to ruffle the movie’s placid surface; when McCrory raises her voice slightly above a calm conversational tone, it echoes like the wail of an enraged banshee. For the rest of its plodding length, the movie wallows in its rich costumes, sumptuous wigs and stately, dignified repartee. J.L.

The idea that one’s brain must be switched into sleep mode in order to appreciate a film is silly and offensive, but that shouldn’t prevent a fully switched-on brain from enjoying a deeply stupid movie like Jurassic World. Director and co-writer Colin Trevorrow injects the moribund Jurassic Park franchise with new life by pairing the usual dinosaurs-running-amok formula with a seductive, Westworld-style story hook. In a canonically respectful present, John Hammond’s dream of a dinosaur-themed amusement park has come to fruition, with thousands of thrill-seeking families streaming through the Isla Nublar gates every day. Unfortunately, corporations are inherently evil (this message brought to you by Coca-Cola, Verizon, Samsung, Brookstone and Mercedes-Benz), and soon enough the park’s newest, genetically enhanced “attraction” gets loose and starts— wouldn’t you know it?—running amok. Jurassic World offers one-dimensional characters, misused actors, nonsensical motivations, retrograde gender politics, insipid pseudo-science and a whole lot of fun. D.B.

The Sundance Film Festival is a respected institution, a vital showcase and support system for independent cinema that has been operating for nearly four decades. However, a certain type of incredibly annoying American independent film

has become synonymous with the festival over the years, to the point that the term “Sundance movie” is almost always used in a pejorative manner. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s oxygen-deprived Me and Earl and the Dying Girl won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and while it’s relatively weightless and apolitical, the double win was inevitable.

This is just about the Sundance-iest Sundance movie that Sundance ever Sundanced, so aggressively quirky and needy and contrived that it makes The Spitfire Grill look like A Woman Under the Influence. Every line, gesture, story beat and camera move comes complete with post-ironic air quotes. It’s like Juno on crystal meth. D.B.

Director Alan Taylor and writers Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier reboot the franchise, carefully incorporating bits and pieces of all the movies and TV series since James Cameron’s 1984 original, ironing out any conflicts by deploying that trusty old science fiction standby, time-travel paradox. Arnold Schwarzenegger is back, of course—it would hardly be a Terminator movie without him— adding a wry touch of deadpan self-mockery (the fact that this “robot” has aged 30 years is deftly explained away). Under Taylor’s briskly over-the-top direction, the movie is good fun, albeit complicated and not always logical. The real secret weapon here isn’t time machines or robots, it’s Emilia Clarke (of Game of Thrones) as Sarah Conner, tender and forceful as needed in a potentially star-making performance. J.L.

Testament of Youth

The gauzy and stale World War I memoir Testament of Youth currently holds an 82 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which only confirms my suspicion that 82 percent of film critics prefer to sleep through the movies that they review. Ex Machina robot Alicia Vikander plays real-life British writer Vera Brittain, a headstrong woman whose world is turned upside down when World War I starts calling away the men in her life, including an aspiring poet who becomes her fiancé (Kit Harington). BBC veteran James Kent makes his feature debut here, but the filmmaking is utterly embalmed, and Kent spends most of his time mooning over flower arrangements and curtain patterns, stranding his actors with the mustiest script in recent memory. Testament of Youth is an interior design spread masquerading as biography, nothing but a dainty and decorative pose of noble suffering, and it moves at roughly the pace of a waking death. D.B.

All right, enough with the numbers. Castro ain’t a mathematician—he’s an artist. He typically performs solo with a loop pedal, weaving together a mix of folk-pop and rhythmic pop.

His last EP, Inside Out, heavily channels Jason Mraz with six fully-produced, pop songs about love. His new EP Live delves into decidedly new territory.

“They’re darker, edgier songs,” he says.

With Live, Castro shows influences of hiphop, R&B and Justin Timberlake. It’s also his first-ever live record.

“There’s no added stuff to it—it’s just me, my voice, my guitar, my loop pedal,” he says. “I wanted to do that because I play live so much. I wanted to give people the sound—the flavor—that I bring live.”

He wrote the three songs while on his recent tour— in whatever room he was crashing in for the night, very quietly.

“I didn’t anticipate writing this EP entirely on tour,” he says. “It just sorta clicked.”

Besides, he needed to get that second EP out quickly if he’s going to complete his quota of four in one year.

For his third and fourth EPs, Castro wants to collaborate with local hip-hop artists and female singer-songwriters, respectively. Each album will wind up presenting a very different Castro—and eventually get stripped, merged and reproduced for a debut full-length next year—which is just as he intends.

“You can just see your work,” he says. “If you don’t set goals, you don’t know where you’re trying to go.”

His goals for the rest of the year include releasing two more EPs, going on a second tour and bringing at least 200 people out to Harlow’s this Saturday, July 11, for the release of Live.

Castro can also tell you all about Sacramento’s open-mics—he goes to two or three every night, Monday through Thursday.

Or his recent West Coast tour. Over the course of nine weeks, he handed out hundreds of CDs for an average donation of $5 apiece.

He also lost eight pounds that trip, due to a strict budget of “don’t spend shit.”

One thing Castro can’t tell you, though, is how many songs he’s written.

“I write so many little pop songs but usually just toss them immediately,” he says, estimating that he’s written approximately 200 full songs but only plays 20 on a regular basis.

“As an artist, you want to change, but stay the same,” he says. “You want to change a little bit but still sound like you. I don’t think it matters what genre you go to.” Ω

America!: Over the Fourth of July weekend, High Sierra Music Festival truly lived up to its billing as the “ultimate intimate festival experience.”

For four days, Quincy’s Plumas County Fairgrounds were transformed into an alternate universe of

joined by Robert Randolph (Robert Randolph and the Family Band, the Word), drummer Nikki Glaspie (Nth Power, Dumpstaphunk) and Hartswick. Earlier the same day, Randolph’s supergroup the Word crushed it (with members of the North Mississippi All-Stars and Medenski, Martin and Wood) while Glaspie’s Nth Power left a lasting impression with its set as well.

With all of this music binging, it was, not surprisingly, difficult to choose what to watch because great acts often played at the same time.

Galactic, the Slip and the Dustbowl Revival all played simultaneously on different stages, for example.

Choices must be made.

Let’s not forget about those artist workshops as well: Hartswick demonstrated how to improvise, keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth of the String Cheese Incident discussed beer and Scott Pemberton, Dan Lebowitz (Lebo of ALO) and Eric McFadden taught different guitar playing styles.

There were many children in attendance—likely because their parents were brought to the same event when they were kids. There were plenty of activities for kids, including jellyfish art, daily festival parades and their own musical activities. I stopped at one point to watch ALO’s Lebo and Bo Carper of New Monsoon play some kiddie classics with a group of little ones on a cozy stage tucked behind the main festival thoroughfare.

If parents wanted a night out, the festival offered child care as well—a great option since much of the festival’s fun took place long after the daily schedule was over.

Impromptu social gatherings and late-night music sessions started around midnight. After one of those sessions, the California Honeydrops and Element Brass Band burst out of the High Sierra Music Hall, followed by about 250 fans, in an

for approximately 10,000 people. At any given time, campers could run into a festival artist as paths crisscrossed constantly in this friendly, temporary community.

Spontaneity was the key word at this event, which just celebrated its 25th anniversary. Music, dancing and parties popped up at any given moment—often at the same time and frequently into the wee hours of the night. Or while in the line to take a shower.

The festival featured scheduled band sets and workshops, but the most “in the moment” activities happened in an extemporaneous or impromptu setting. Just take Sacramento’s the Nibblers and Element Brass Band—the groups collaborated on a pair of unscheduled campground jams that attracted a dancing, sweaty mass of revelers, who overflowed out of a batch of easy-up canopies in the early July heat.

About 80 bands and artists played the festival, including headliners the String Cheese Incident—who played four sets over two evenings—as well as Umphrey’s McGee, the John Butler Trio and the Word. Whereas last year’s lineup featured a bounty of electronic dance music and indie rock, this year’s stuck more to its roots: bluegrass, Americana, soul, gospel, bluesy rock, jam bands and other feel-good party sounds.

Another notable aspect of this year’s event was the high rate of collaborations between the festival’s artists. One of the most memorable happened when jazz vocalist and trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick, who often performs with Phish, joined the String Cheese Incident for a remarkable version of Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough.” Hartswick incited the crowd to shake and shout passionately as she sang and punched out the song’s horn lines like nobody’s business.

Collaborations also took place on smaller stages. Saxophonist Karl Denson of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe appeared at the festival for an 11:30 p.m. set where he was

impromptu Mardi Gras-style parade

around the festival grounds. It started around 4:30 a.m. and went on for 45 minutes or so.

A couple days later, I ran across California Honeydrops vocalist Lech Wierzynski and complimented him on the fun of that early morning parade.

He smiled and—in the true High Sierra spirit—said, “That wasn’t us, that was all of you guys.”

Its song “Skeleton Key” pays respect to blues artists like Son House and the murkier tones of Tom Waits—yet Stone manages to convey these influences with his own honest interpretation. Since it’s inception in 1992, Built to Spill has gone through more than a handful of big changes. After more than three years in the studio, much trial and error and questions about whether he’d ever make music again, Doug Martsch and his band are back on the INDIE scene with the critically acclaimed album Untethered Moon. The current lineup has traded in the old rhythm section for a brand-spanking-new one, which adds a new flavor to the legendary indie band’s consistently awesome sound.

I hear Oregon has legal recreational marijuana these days. How does it work?

Not only that, but the great state of Oregon is expected to allow medical cannabis dispensaries to sell cannabis to recreational M users starting in October. You heard me. While the LU A E B IO A

At least until 2016 when the new rules kick in and folks will have to pay a 17-20 percent tax.

Wow. Oregon is so cool and smart, you guys.

These are the basics: Oregonians can grow up to four marijuana plants, can possess up to 8 ounces at home, but only 1 ounce in public, and they are allowed to give someone up to 1 ounce of cannabis Oregon is so cool and without any penalties. This is all so awesome! I hope smart, you guys. all of the people looking at creating recreational cannabis laws in California are taking a good look at how Oregon is handling its business. Way better than Washington, and even better than Colorado. California can be better than all of them if we can get our shit together.

In response to Ngaio Bealum’s answer to a reader’s question about smoking cannabis before or during pregnancy, I have to comment on the use of one study and anecdotal information to formulate the answer.

A recent review of the literature, (http://dfaf.org/ assets/docs/CLINPERIN41.877,2014.pdf) summed up the following concerns about marijuana: a six- to seventimes increase in cannabis potency over the last several decades, an association with infertility, placental complications and fetal growth restriction, as well as long term neurobehavioral effects (poorer executive functioning, conduct and behavioral problems and poorer school achievement). Smoking marijuana results in five times greater carbon monoxide exposure compared to smoking tobacco! The developing human brain is much more sensitive than the adult brain. There is an exquisite orchestration of nerve development, growth, migration and communication that is easily derailed when exposed to toxic chemicals or even high levels of substances for which there are natural receptors. Yes, smoking cannabis may offer health benefits in certain circumstances, but not during pregnancy, despite the awesomeness of Mr. Bealum’s siblings and children.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): How can

you fulfill your potential as an Aries?

novelist John Irving begins a new book, his first task is to write the last line of the last page. Then he writes the second-tolast line. He continues to work backwards for a while until he has a clear understanding of the way his story will end.

Right now, Cancerian, as you hatch your next big phase of development, I invite you to borrow Irving’s approach. Visualize in detail the blossoms that will eventually come from the seeds you’re planting.

Create a vivid picture of the life you will be living when your plans have fully ripened.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): What’s

hard but important for you to do? What are the challenging tasks you know you should undertake because they would improve your life? PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Franz

Kafka produced three novels, a play, four short fiction collections and many other stories. And yet some of his fellow writers thought he was uncomfortable in expressing himself. Bertolt Brecht said Kafka seemed perpetually afraid, as if he were being monitored by the cops for illicit thoughts. Milena Jesenská observed that Kafka often wrote like he was sitting naked in the midst of fully clothed people.

Your assignment in the coming weeks is to shed such limitations and inhibitions from your own creative expression. What would you need to do to free your imagination?

To get started, visualize five pleasurable scenarios in which you feel joyful, autonomous, generous and expansive.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Even the

most provocative meme cannot literally cause the Internet to collapse from overuse. It’s true that photos of Kim Kardashian’s oiled-up butt spawned a biblical flood of agitated responses on social media. So did the cover shot of Caitlyn Jenner in Vanity Fair and the Youtube video of a tiny hamster noshing tiny burritos and the season-five finale of the TV show Game of Thrones. But none of these starbursts unleashed so much traffic that the Web was in danger of crashing.

It’s too vast and robust for that to ever happen. Or is it? I’m wondering if Virgos’ current propensities for high adventure and rollicking melodrama could generate phenomena that would actually, not just metaphorically, break the Internet. To be safe, I suggest you enjoy yourself to the utmost, but not more than the utmost.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): The coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to acquire a new title. It’s quite possible

that a person in authority will confer it upon you, and that it will signify a raise in status, an increase in responsibility, or an expansion of your clout. If for some reason this upgrade doesn’t occur naturally, take matters into your own hands. Tell people to refer to you as “Your Excellency” or “Your Majesty.” Wear a name tag that says “Deputy Director of Puzzle Solving” or “Executive Vice President of Fanatical Balance and Insane Poise.” For once in your life, it’s OK to risk becoming a legend in your own mind. P.S. It wouldn’t be a bad time to demand a promotion—diplomatically, of course, in the Libran spirit.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): While

making a long trek through the desert on a camel, British author Somerset Maugham passed the time by reading Marcel Proust’s novel In Search of Lost Time. After finishing each page, Maugham ripped it out and cast it away. The book weighed less and less as his journey progressed. I suggest that you consider a similar approach in the coming weeks, Taurus. As you weave your way toward your next destination, shed the accessories and attachments you don’t absolutely need. Keep lightening your load.

The song must go on, but it’s not without continued giggles. Leland provides an explanation: “There was a bug on my shoulder and it looked like Mario was going to eat it.” Understood.

It’s just another day of work for Elk Grove’s College Fund Street Band, the Fong siblings’ effort to raise money for their educations. Technically it’s a five-person band—there’s also Maxwell, 20, off to school already, and Jenny, 8, who is still training for a regular position. Some combination of the family regularly plays the Wednesday farmers market at Cesar Chavez Plaza as well as markets and festivals in the Bay Area. Nina is going to San Jose State University in the fall to study biology, Mario is contemplating computer programming and Leland wants to become a doctor.

How’s having your parents as your managers?

Nina: There’s no escaping. It’s not like you have a manager for two hours during a work day. She’s watching you sleep. There’s no calling in sick. There’s no faking an injury.

Best and worst thing about being a sibling band?

Mario: Best thing is that getting together and practicing is not a problem because we live under the same roof. But working together is a big problem.

Nina: Being as competitive as we are, it’s really helped us excel as a band because every time someone learns a new riff or different chords, we all try to top each other.

every time someone messes up, which is a bad thing and we’re working on that.

How’d you get this idea?

Mario: It was two years ago in Ashland, Oregon, for the Fourth of July festival. We had a picnic and we brought ukuleles. We all played ukulele—dad, me, Nina. Leland knew a little bit, and he wanted to buy candy or something and my parents wouldn’t give him money. So my little brother had an idea: he got a ukulele, opened up the case and sat in one spot, playing two chords— Leland: I sat in one spot for a whole hour.

I got $60 for playing two chords in one hour.

Mario: We were like, “Well, if you could make $60 in one hour playing two chords, how much money could we make putting all our talents together?”

Have any of you tried to write your own songs?

Mario: Yes. It seems like every time I try to write a song, I tell Nina about it, and then she says it sounds like another song. Then she plays it for me and it sounds exactly like that song.

Nina: It’s just easier to do covers. There are a lot of levels for a song to get approved for the band.

Mario: I haven’t gotten past the first level.

What do you imagine college is like?

Leland: It’s weird though, our youngest sister actually knows what she wants to do in her life. She wants to become a princess.

And that’s all I’m going to say about that.

What’s the weirdest interaction you’ve had at a market?

Leland: We were here one time and this guy came up and tried to sing with us. He tried to sing “Copacabana” but he wound up singing “Cocobanana.” [Laughs.]

Mario: Every time we’ve invited a stranger to play with us—except this one time this guy just shredded on the bass—it just ends up badly. … There was this one lady carrying a rat on her shoulder. That was a good interesting person.

Nina, you just graduated from high school. You’re not kicked out of the band when you go to college?

Nina: No. We’ll see.

Leland: She’ll still play because she’s close.

Nina: Probably not.

Mario: Right now, we’re training me, Leland and my younger sister to be the band.

How’s that going?

Leland: Scary.

Mario: Hard Leland: A lot of studying.

Mario: I think there’s definitely a lot less hanging out than is depicted in movies.

Mario: So-so. I have to learn how to manage stuff. Leland needs to learn how to play bass.

Jenny needs to learn percussion.

There’s hanging out. I hung out.

Nina: Yes, it’s really tense. We’re all three years apart so every three years it gets more tense as people are moving on. In three years, Mario will leave. … We’re in a sticky situation.

Mario: I just hope we can pull it off, that’s all. Ω

Nina: It sounds like a giant sleepover, but with studying.
