College advice My college experience was a trove of one-to-grow-on screw-ups and inadvertent successes. Please take that into account when reading these tips for high-school graduates: get good grades—but not that good.

Don’t lock yourself in a room just to sustain a 4.0 GPA, which is what I earned my first year. But don’t crash and burn with a 1.70 junior year (yikes!). There is such thing as a middle ground (it’s a 3.35).

Internships are overrated. get a damn job. I regret never interning during undergrad—but my three part-time jobs offered richer experience and memories. And actual money.

Definitely, absolutely go abroad. I repeat: Go. Abroad. You can even teach in places like France or South Korea upon graduation. Do it. For as long as possible.

Choose a major that will get you paid.

I’ve racked up significant units in film production, art history, photography, English, comparative literature and political science. Those hikes are lovely, the scenery inspiring. But I urge you to take the trail that ends at the pot of gold. You can always register for archery or piano courses on weekends—when you’re a friggin’ baller!

Ditch a final. You think I remember that modernist lit final from 1999? Hell no. I remember lying to my professor about rescheduling because of a cousin’s wedding, ditching the test and flying to Austin with my buddy from New Zealand! get a radio show. College-radio people are some of the greatest folk you’ll ever encounter. Tune in. Volunteer. And, if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll get that primo midnight to 3 a.m. time slot. Play a ton of Pavement and Elliott Smith for the 18-year-old me.

Live cheap and take out as few loans as possible. This may be hopeless in today’s UC/CSU system.

I don’t think a college education has the same value it used to. I think it is definitely important for certain kinds of careers, but I think it has been oversold. A lot of people are encouraged to get one when they don’t need one and it sends them off on a wrong path. Not everyone needs to have one.

Bernie From the moment Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont suggested he might run for president, we started hearing about how he couldn’t possibly win the nomination against the juggernaut that is former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her fundraising machine. And, even if by some miracle he did, why, he’d lose in a landslide because he’s just too radical for America.

There’s surely some validity Far more “radical” to the first of those statements.

But for those of us who have long candidates—Rand bemoaned the “big money, big Paul, Rick Santorum influence” method of selecting presidents, it’s also a wake-up call. and Mike Huckabee Far more “radical” candicome to mind—are dates—Rand Paul, Rick Santorum treated seriously. and Mike Huckabee come to mind—are treated seriously.

What’s so weird about Sanders?

Not that much, when you think about it. His “if they’re too big to fail, they’re too big to exist” mantra where the banks and investment firms are concerned seems like good, common sense—and has been extremely popular among the crowd that wants to draft Senator Elizabeth Warren to run.

So, why should we write Sanders off?

A better question might be: Who wants us to write Sanders off? The very best reason to pay attention to Sanders’ candidacy is that he scares Wall Street spitless.

He frightens investment bankers, venture-fund capitalists and the top half of the 1 percent to death.

And anyone who scares those people is worth a good, long look. Ω

K.J.’s budget It is sad, but unfortunately not surprising, to learn that Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is seeking to enhance his office’s status at taxpayer expense.

Johnson’s signature issue—more than keeping the Kings, more than making Sacramento a “world-class city,” as he defines it—has been to strengthen the power of the mayor and enhance the political heft and national profile of his office.

This is not the first “end run” Johnson’s attempted when he doesn’t get what he wants. Bottom line: Johnson can command the lights and cameras. His “bully pulpit,” thanks to his celebrity, is more powerful than that of any mayor before him. He should use it to focus on what matters in the day-to-day lives of citizens, and quit trying to game the system. Ω

Re “Cut the K.J. hero worship” by Rachel Leibrock (SN&R Editor’s Note, May 21): Surely Rachel Leibrock’s attack on Kevin Johnson is racially motivated. It’s the old tried-and-true tactic of the progressive left: destroy your enemy with unfounded sexual (and other) accusations. It is sad to see the attacks against K.J. just because he is black and the left doesn’t like his positions on several issues.

Accusations of sexual harassment by women is the new weapon of women who cannot compete in the man’s world of business. Can’t get a raise, don’t like your boss (or men), or want to get even? Accuse him of letter of the week some sexual impropriety (maybe he refused “her” sexual advances). This is why many men don’t marry and won’t be alone in a room with a female worker!

Disappointing editorial Re “On racial bias” (SN&R Editorial, May 21): I am pretty disappointed, but not surprised, by this editorial on racism. I am the 31-year-old son of a black father and white mother.

My appearance follows that of my mother. I am discriminated against on a regular basis because of the color of my skin whenever I am at work in certain predominantly black neighborhoods—from “cracker” to actual physical threats of violence all because I look white. Yes, racism is everywhere, but it is wrong to say all of one race is the problem and another is at no fault. I noticed for some of the most ridiculous problems black people blame white people and vice versa. Everyone is an individual and I don’t blame either race I am for my problems. I take responsibility for my own actions as should the editor of this scapegoat story.

Race and self-reliance

Re “On racial bias” (SN&R Editorial, May 21): The editorial claims that we have substituted “thug” for the N-word.

When I see a “black” person or group of them, I certainly notice their color.

If they have a pick in their hair, saggy pants and use the N-word, experience tells me that they are likely to be a thug or aspire to be one. To be sure, that is a stereotype that is unfair, but I would be a moron to ignore my life’s experiences.

If I see a white person who dressed and spoke similarly, I would feel the same. In both cases, I would be a fool to not take into account that people dressed in that fashion, talking and acting like jackasses, are far more likely to be a danger to my safety.

Unfortunately, in my experience, a higher percentage of blacks I meet turn out to be thugs, compared to the

We would also be well advised to speak out for ourselves in identifying and combating inequality and embracing our own culture. Not depending on others to speak for us. Not depending on media to do it for us. The old adage “not part of the solution equals being part of the problem” definitely applies. Until that day comes and we take full ownership of ourselves and our communities, the marginalization, systematic demonization and exclusion will not go away simply because of goodwill gestures.

There are about 120,000 young people under the age of 18 with Medi-Cal dental insurance in Sacramento County.

Counting both baby and adult teeth, Denti-Cal is overseeing about 3 million teeth. A big and important job.

Unfortunately, Sacramento’s grownups have not met this challenge. In 1994, a pilot project moved many Sacramento Denti-Cal beneficiaries into managed care dental plans. Instead of reimbursing dentists for services rendered, dental HMO plans would be paid a set amount for covering a certain number of eligible people. The hope was that this managed care l

by Jeff VonKaene system would cut administrative costs, and provide less expensive coverage. j ef f v@ne wsreview.c om However, a 2010 report by First 5 Sacramento Commission revealed that the for-profit HMO dental plans were paid the same amount whether they provided services or not, and these HMOs were only seeing about 20 percent of the eligible patients.

After this report was published, California President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg called for an investigation. The five HMOs said they would do a better job. But did the state ask for our money back? No. Two of the HMOs were dropped and Nearly 56 percent of the state promised to do a better the children enrolled in job monitoring the program.

We would have enough dentists to provide care for our Medi-Cal children’s 3 million teeth.

And with more FQHCs, we can do more. Much more. newspapers in Sacramento, There are bureaucratic difficulties. There are cash flow Chico and Reno. difficulties, because the feds do not pay promptly. But at the end of the day, if Sacramento grownups do their job, the feds will provide the funds for us to provide excellent care for these 3 million teeth. It is not a money issue. It is a solvable problem. Our kids need to brush twice a day. And the grownups need to fix the Denti-Cal problem. Ω

On Saturday morning in North Sacramento, “Two female suspects attempted a theft scheme at Target,” according to the city police log. “One of the two women stole merchandise and immediately handed the items to the second female who returned them for a gift card. When confronted by store security, the two females became violent and fled.” Police eventually caught the suspects in a Ford Taurus, whose driver was arrested for possessing marijuana for sale and meth. The women were booked for robbery and conspiracy.

Obama last week—again—this time because Obama wants to cut the amount of military gear going to local law enforcement. The federal government’s military freebies program had been criticized after Ferguson and Baltimore— but apparently Jones knows more than the president about how to deal with old guns and ruggedized laptops. “The president knows as much about policing as I know about being president,” Jones said in a YouTube video. Then why are you telling Obama what to do, Jones?

Same old news A look at the ‘reimagined’ Sacramento Bee— and more about that Kings arena lawsuit “Looks like USA Today.” That was the No. 1 criticism Bites heard about the “reimagined” Sacramento Bee, launched earlier this month.

Bites couldn’t tell you if the new Bee looks like USA Today, and probably most of the folks making the comparison couldn’t either, really. Still, it did take Bites a few days for the eyes to adjust to the new italic headlines (italic headARviN lines!?), the new fonts and color text,

But let’s ask someone who knows what they’re talking about. “It doesn’t feel like anything groundbreaking, in terms of newspaper design,” says Don Button, who teaches publication design at Sacramento City College, and who was art director for SN&R for many years.

Button likes the overall reorganization of the paper, especially the decision to frontload the paper with local news and pushing the world news further back.

And he says the new paper “scans better.” The text has more room to breathe, there are more entry points for the eye on every page. For example, the daily has started using fat sidebars with images to help readers navigate to stories inside. Another nice touch is the prominent use of large pull quotes in stories. All these are elements that magazines and weeklies (like SN&R) have used to great effect for many years.

Maybe this more spacious layout comes at the expense of some text, a wire story or two. But you weren’t going to read those, anyway.

The new website has better navigation as well, and Button also credited the new Bee with a more consistent design across platforms.

But he also thinks the paper could have been more ambitious. Why does the Bee still carry TV listings, he asks. “Who doesn’t have TV listings at their fingertips at this point?” And the old classified section looks just as bad as before. “They didn’t rethink that. They didn’t even improve it.”

In advertisements and elsewhere, honchos from the Bee and its parent company, McClatchy, had promised a deep “rethinking” of the Bee, and an introduction for readers to the “newspaper of the future.” The end result is pretty much the newspaper of recent past, with a few significant improvements, Button concludes. “They may have overpromised.

But what they delivered is pretty good.”

Last week SN&R did a deep dive into the legal arguments and evidence at the heart of the Kings arena “secret subsidy” lawsuit being fought out right now (see “A different arena story,” SN&R News, May 21). Trial starts on June 22.

The suit keeps churning up interesting information that the city ought to have disclosed to the public a long time ago.

Some of that information hadn’t surfaced in time to make it into last week’s story.

Remember, the gist of the lawsuit is that the plaintiffs believe the city misled the public by claiming that certain assets given to the Kings—like the Downtown Plaza parking garages, and city-owned land for the Kings to build new electronic billboards— had no value.

But consider this email from Mayor Kevin Johnson to whale Ron Burkle on March 22, 2013: “We found a pathway to $258m[illion], and backfill the general fund. Above and beyond, we’re offering significant value in the form of parking, signage and entitlements,” the mayor wrote.

We’re learning a lot now that we really ought to have known then. And the questions weren’t tough enough.

But the city told the public those assets had no value. Here the mayor is saying their value is “significant.” And it’s “above and beyond” the city’s share of the arena costs.

How significant? The mayor continues, “in that context, we need a solid justification for providing a $60m parking structure while paying its $8m in debt without anything in return.”

So here, Johnson says the parking garage is worth $60 million, very different from the zero dollars the city told the public, very different than what you would have heard in the local news at the time. “This item will no doubt attract the most scrutiny and tough questions,” the mayor wrote to Burkle.

As the case goes on, we’re learning a lot now that we really ought to have known then. And the questions weren’t tough enough. Ω

Truckin’ on City poised to finally pass friendlier food-truck rules This week—after nearly five years of meetings and talk—the city of Sacramento is finally tweaking its food-truck laws. by Sacramento’s food-truck craze arrived in late 2010, Nick Miller when eateries on wheels such as Drewski’s Hot Rod Kitchen started popping up on street corners and during ni ck am@ newsr eview.c om Second Saturday. A year later, local food bloggers and foodie advocates were petitioning City Hall to ease up on what they perceived as unfair laws against food trucks.

They didn’t like that trucks could only park for 30 minutes at a time in a location, or could not operate later than 8 p.m. during summer months.

As Drewski’s operator Andrew Blaskovich told SN&R back then: “The hardest part [about running a food truck] is finding places to park.”

Fast-forward to today and those laws still remain on the books. And there are so many damn trucks—Sacramento County told SN&R last week that there are 180 food or prep trucks operating, including corporate trucks by the likes of Carl’s Jr.—that the food-truck appeal is definitely post-honeymoon.

But business and restaurant-industry interests frown upon the new laws. The Sacramento Downtown Partnership and other business groups argue that the ordinance changes could negatively impact restaurant business.

Paul Somerhausen, who co-founded SactoMoFo, a group that puts on annual food-truck events, supports the new changes. “This is a major improvement on what was there before,” he wrote. “This will finally allow trucks to compete fairly in the market without fears of huge fines for illegal rules.”

But food-truck advocates such as Joshua Lurie-Terrell, who also co-founded SactoMoFo but is no longer associated with the group, says he’s happy the new rules are easier on truck operators—but is disappointed that they don’t go far enough.

He says state law mandates that trucks be allowed to operate when and where they like. “As long as the trucks are properly permitted and pass inspection, and are parked legally and not doing business in an area where that is disallowed due to zoning laws (or business hour regulation), municipalities may not decide where or when or for how long the trucks operate,” he wrote.

The Sacramento city manager’s department clearly interpreted state law differently, but the new ordinance states outright that the city “does not regulate competition and should not consider it when implementing policy.”

The issue could prove to be politically volatile for state Attorney General Kamala Harris, a Democrat who is also running for the U.S. Senate next year.

“We haven’t heard from her one way or the other,” McCarty said of whether she will support his Assembly Bill 86. But the Assembly member added that a report from Harris’ office last month discussed the need for independent review and transparency when it comes to reviewing highprofile cases.

“So, we view that as a step in the right direction,” McCarty said.

In the earlier report, Harris directed her office’s Division of Law Enforcement to conduct a review of state special-agent forces. One of their Samantha Gallegos key findings—and one on which they are taking is a reporter for action—is a new process intended to enhance Capitol Weekly, transparency after one of their state-level officers where a version of this story originally is involved in a lethal incident.

Marie Schubert, who restarted her office’s review of deadly-use-of-force incidents in January, following a three-and-a-half-year layoff.

“Any claims that District Attorneys cannot fairly evaluate allegations of criminal conduct by law enforcement are false and contrary to the fact that our office has prosecuted peace officers for crimes they have committed,” she wrote in an emailed statement to SN&R. “We are dedicated to fulfilling our ethical duty to fairly administer justice.”

Schubert pointed to her office’s successful prosecution, in 2013, of ex-Sacramento police Officer Brandon Mullock, who falsified dozens of police reports following traffic stops that led to DUI arrests. The disgraced officer pleaded no contest to one count of perjury and three counts of filing a false police report. The DA’s office also overturned 79 convictions borne from Mullock’s tainted evidence.

As for officer-involved-shooting prosecutions, those are much rarer. Only two such prosecutions occurred during a 30-year span in Sacramento County.

The first part of 2015 has already produced five officer-involved shootings and two in-custody deaths across the county. The latest occurred near Cesar Chavez Plaza last Thursday evening, when a woman hailed officers because she reportedly felt threatened by her adult son. After allegedly advancing on police with a knife, one officer shot the 28-year-old man multiple times. A news release listed the man in stable condition.

It was the second shooting in seven days for the department. On May 15, police fatally shot a 42-year-old man during a domestic disturbance call. The man allegedly pointed a black, semiautomatic-style BB gun at two officers who entered his home. One of the officers fired his weapon as he and his partner retreated. A department release described the man’s weapon as “visually indistinguishable from a real handgun.”

Police spokesman Sgt. Doug Morse said investigators don’t yet know what prompted the man to point a replica firearm. “However, it is reasonable that suicide by cop may have played a factor,” he said via email in response to a question.

Officers involved in both shootings were placed on paid administrative leave.

Harris has said the current process of investigating civilian deaths by local law enforcement is effective enough. She also has said that the local district attorneys should have the authority to investigate officer-involved shootings, in part because they are elected by—and held accountable to—local constituents.

Schubert agreed, saying Sacramento County voters elect their DA “to independently review and prosecute all crimes committed here.”

“I don’t think there’s an inherent conflict,” Harris said in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle back in December. “Where there are abuses, we have designed the system to address them.”

That system isn’t always up to the task.

In Sacramento County, only the city of Sacramento boasts an independent law enforcement monitor. Police departments in Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Folsom and Rancho Cordova, which had one officer-involved shooting this year, aren’t subject to external review.

Neither is the county’s largest law enforcement agency, the sheriff’s department, which has investigated two officer-involved shootings and a jail inmate death this year.

When Sacramento County’s Child Protective Services removed Cynthia Baldwin’s two grandchildren from their parents’ home last year, the retiree hired a lawyer to make sure the kids ended up with her and not in foster care. She won that battle, but is losing a war of attrition that many grandparents and relatives face when children suddenly need a second home.

Currently, foster providers who care for relatives are paid $300 to $470 less in California than those who take in strangers, even though child welfare officials say the priority is to keep families as intact as possible. The discrepancy is an unintended relic from former President Bill Clinton’s welfare overhaul in 1996.

Many states took measures to patch over the financial disparity created in the foster care system; California was one of the last: Gov. Jerry Brown set aside $30 million during last year’s budget signing to balance the scales.

“It’s a travesty that we’ve allowed [children] to be in these [relatives’] homes for this long without the same resources as foster parents,” child and family advocate Lonnie Russell told Sacramento County supervisors on May 19. “We should all be ashamed, actually.”

After signaling its intention to opt into the state money in September, county officials cemented their participation last week.

“This, clearly, is equalizing a situation that’s been an inequity for many, many years,” said Supervisor Don Nottoli.

Starting July 1, the Approved Relative Caregiver funding program will wield federal, state and county CalWORKs resources to ensure foster caregivers receive equal aid for taking in relatives as they do nonrelatives. That translates to $671 a month for a young child and $838 a month for a youth between the ages of 15 and 20.

Baldwin currently receives $607 a month in aid—for both children. Since welcoming her two grandkids, ages 6 and 2, into her home last March, she has watched her savings dwindle from $8,500 down to $600.

“My life has changed significantly, as you can imagine, and my retirement years are not what I thought they would be,” she told supervisors. “But I love my grandchildren.”

Less than 22 percent of Sacramento County’s foster children reside with relatives, according to KidsData.org, a program of the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health. Nearly a quarter—24.5 percent—are placed in group homes. (Raheem F. Hosseini)

Unsheltered and counted Homelessness increased nearly 5 percent in Sacramento since 2013. That’s according to an early look at point-in-time data released this week by the Sacramento Regional Coalition to End Homelessness.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires communities to conduct point-in-time counts of their homeless populations on a biannual basis. Volunteers conduct these surveys over the span of a single day, and typically come away with a soft indication of the actual homeless population due to several factors, including the weather, the willingness of participants and the transient nature of the population being surveyed. The results are tied to federal housing assistance dollars available to each community.

Since the last point-in-time count in 2013, the overall homeless population rose from 2,538 individuals counted to 2,659.

This includes increases in the number of chronically homeless, veterans, youth and those without any shelter.

Glimmers of hope can be read in the decreases of homeless individuals who claimed to be victims of addiction, domestic violence or mental illness, though the latter still accounted for 22 percent of the overall population.

my father had gone missing It happened on a Tuesday. I had been sick with the flu for the past week and was missing school that day. By the time I woke up, I knew something was wrong. When I went downstairs, many of my family’s closest friends were already gathered in my living room.

My mother proceeded to tell me that my father had gone missing that morning, and no one could reach him. He had told my mother he was heading to work, but his boss had called to

say he never arrived. My mom then told me to go back upstairs and check my phone. I was confused. Why was checking my phone so important when my father was missing? My father had texted me and my family three words that morning: I love you.

Immediately I was taken back to a moment about six months before, when my parents had told my siblings and me that my father had been struggling with clinical depression for about four years. I didn’t worry about my father’s depression much. I didn’t consider depression to be a true disease.

Not even an hour later, I would realize just how wrong I was to not consider depression a disease. From the top of my staircase, I heard the doorbell ring. It was a family friend, fully dressed in her police officer uniform. I heard my mother start to cry.

In that moment I knew my father had died, and I burst into tears as well. The next few hours were excruciating. Being one of the first to hear about my father’s death, I relived it with

digital obsessions and crazy-weird music and unrealistic dreams and demands.

Yeah, right.

This generation faces myriad challenges that those of us in older generations can’t even begin to fathom—not the least of which is our increasingly tech-influenced shapeshifting work culture and an uncertain financial future.

I stayed at one of their houses every night for weeks, even after they had gone back to school. I just couldn’t stand staying in my house all day and all night, surrounded by sadness.

I was extremely lucky to have them by my side; giving me an escape from the sadness enclosed in my house and defending me from hideous comments kids at school were making about my dad’s death. To this day, I don’t know exactly what was said about my father. People associate suicide with a choice, when once you experience it firsthand, you realize that depression and suicide aren’t decisions. Depression is a disease like any other, and suicide is not a choice someone makes.

Right after my dad’s death, we were all too worried about what people would say and think about my dad to tell them what really happened. Instead, we said he was in an accident.

I understand that everyone has a back story and do my best not to judge people, because I don’t know the world they come from.

in the orphanage, my dreams and aspirations were born In my most vivid early memory it is 3 p.m., and I am standing in a row with dozens of other orphans. Today is vaccination day. We are waiting to receive our shots and none of us are very happy about it. These shots were nothing like the ones I get now. The syringe had a terrifyingly long needle that the nurse used to stab each of us.

After the torture was over, I would walk around to each of my friends and be their “Band-Aid,” taking my small hand and putting pressure on the spot that was bleeding because the orphanage could not afford even such simple medical equipment.

This was how many children in my orphanage group contracted hepatitis B. Poverty makes diseases spread.

My life began in Uralsk, Kazakhstan, in an orphanage. During the time I lived in the orphanage, my dreams and aspirations were born. In the orphanage there were children of all ages, races, and mental and physical conditions. A few of the children had serious health problems and birth defects, but those children were my friends, slept beside me at night, and played with me in the daytime. I noticed this and said to myself, “When I grow up, I’m going to be a doctor so I can help them get better.”

As I grew older and moved to California with a family I could finally call my own, my life changed but my desire to become a doctor did not.

I volunteered at the local E.R. and then last summer I joined a nonprofit educational organization called Global Glimpse through my school. For three weeks I traveled to León, Nicaragua, with 24 other students and leaders.

My time there reaffirmed my decision to pursue a medical career, and it also helped me realize that I needed to study international public health.

In Nicaragua my group did a Community Action Project (CAP) in a small village on the outside of León called La Goyena. The village is so poverty stricken that the only job the men can get is working long hours at the nearby sugar plant. The town entirely lacks simple clean water, which leads the residents to get potentially life threatening diseases. Other villagers get sick because the sugar plant pollutes the air and water.

No doctors reside in La Goyena, meaning that no proper medical attention is available.

Living among the people of La Goyena brought back memories of the conditions under which I had lived as a child. In the orphanage, I had endured a painful and dangerous vaccination process but the children in this village didn’t even have vaccinations.

Unlike most children from impoverished backgrounds, I now have the privilege of getting a great education at an excellent American college. There are a lot of subjects I’d love to study just for my own interest—filmmaking is a real interest of mine, for instance.

But because of my own background, I am determined to use my opportunities to pursue a course of study that will help me give the gift of health to those who haven’t had the luck I’ve had. At the age of 5, I had dreamt of becoming a doctor but never thought in a million years that I could succeed; but now I can make my dreams and aspirations a reality.

In fourth grade, I walked into my bathroom, looked at myself through a clear, wide mirror and wished I were white. The wish resulted from the frustration I felt with my disposition at a wealthy white school immersed in a wealthy white community.

My dad always told my older brother, sisters and me, “You are not like them,” referring to all my white and wealthy classmates.

But I wanted to be. I wanted their seemingly worry-free lives waking up to electricity, running water and a pair of parents arguing about what vacation home to buy and not about how to keep the only home they barely had.

Yet I couldn’t be like them. In fact, I was far from it. I was instead the son of two Ugandan refugees who fled the wrath and ramifications of Idi Amin. They met in

i began to fight the preconceived notions about black america Sacramento years later, began a family, and with the little money they had, started a small business called Cafe Le Monde. Since I was 6, our cafe was my playground: sweeping floors was my swings and wiping tables, my slides.

I wish I was appreciative of this labor from a young age, as it put food on the table and gave me the fighting chance to attend great schools.

But I wasn’t. I was bitter. Bitter that my childhood couldn’t be spent playing carelessly with friends. Bitter that I didn’t even have the childhood I saw my friends enjoy. At that age, I could only conclude that things would be easier if I was white.

My wish only strengthened in middle school when negative stereotypes about African-Americans started to flood the spongious minds of my peers. Black became

My husband and I were smoking over two packs of cigarettes a day. We were basically killing ourselves and spending all of our money to do it.

Mother of three quits smoking by using vaping products

L

orena Locken began smoking cigarettes when she was 16 years old. At first, she only smoked off and on. By the time she turned 19, she was smoking more than a pack of cigarettes a day. Although she was able to quit smoking when she was pregnant, she always started up again.

Locken says she also had health problems that were being exacerbated by her smoking.

“I had a heart murmur that was really bad,” Locken says. “I was having a hard time breathing.

I coughed all the time. It was really bad.”

Following a colonoscopy in 2010, Locken was diagnosed with transverse colon cancer. For 10 years,

she had been complaining to doctors that something was wrong with her stomach. She had been losing weight and throwing up. Doctors discovered a stage four tumor in her upper stomach and advised her they needed to remove it immediately. She had surgery in June 2010. “[My doctors] all told me to quit smoking because after the surgery, my body wasn’t healing fast enough,” Locken says. “My oxygen levels were down. Smoking was making everything worse.”

Locken’s doctors discovered another tumor on her kidney and another on her lymph node near her spine and a main artery. She had surgery to remove the tumor on

her kidney, but doctors were unable to remove all of the second tumor because of where it was located.

During chemotherapy, Locken continued to smoke.

“My husband and I were smoking over two packs of cigarettes a day,” Locken says. “We were basically killing ourselves and spending all of our money to do it.”

In 2014, Locken’s husband happened to drive by Nor Cal Vape — a vaping store located in Redding — and bought a starter kit for both himself and Locken. Locken says she was skeptical of vapor products at first — she thought it was “just another thing to try.” But as soon as she started using it, she immediately

found it to be a better alternative to smoking cigarettes.

“I don’t know exactly what it is about vaping, but I was able to quit smoking cigarettes altogether,” Locken says. “I haven’t had a craving in a long time. After I did some research on vapor products, I felt even better about it.”

Locken says she and her husband now have more energy to do things with their three children, like go to parks or ride bikes around the neighborhood. The couple goes for a walk every morning.

“It’s been a big difference for both of us,” Locken says. “We’ve actually had 30 people we know quit smoking cigarettes after we

introduced them to vaping. When my husband sees someone smoking, he goes up to them to tell them about vaping. We want everyone to quit smoking cigarettes.”

synonymous with ghetto, and as the only black student at my school, I could feel the aura of that subconscious sentiment permeating from my friends and their parents.

Even my accomplishments, such as making the honor roll and being elected school president, were met with a certain patronizing congratulations—as though my successes as a black student were the biggest oxymoron they had ever heard: You’re pretty smart for a black guy.

Those stinging moments made my mentality towards my race change quicker than my parents fled Idi Amin.

When I entered high school, I discovered racial stereotypes could either be reinforced or diminished by my example. I could not and would not tolerate these false perceptions that were somehow being accepted as dogma. So instead of wishing I were white, I began to fight the preconceived notions about black America.

In that pursuit, I ironically became the “whitest black kid” students had ever met. With each of my successes, whether academically or co-curricularly, I became whiter and whiter in the eyes of my classmates as though black men could only be gangsters, rappers, and athletes. Despite all my efforts, I was mocked for not measuring up to the stereotypes of black men, as if they were valid and I was not. Few things infuriated me more, but that fury became my fuel and motivation, propelling me to resurrect the Black Student Union in order to help my brothers out through mentoring, tutoring and collaborating—essentially having their backs—in hope that the more we pursued excellence, the less black students’ success at our school and beyond would only be seen as the exception to the rule.

I know today, just as I knew then, that my road ahead will be filled with the bumps of brutes and bigots, but as I embark on my journey, I am assured my trials and tribulations will pave a smoother path for those after me. When I step into that same bathroom and look into that same clear, wide mirror, my gaze fixes upon a young AfricanAmerican man trying to purify the black waters of racial prejudice in order to reveal the transparency of truth—now fully aware that this is his only wish.

Half-deaf, half-hearing.

I would make the sign of parting my head in half, insisting that I could be both “Are you hearing, or are you deaf?”

This was the question first asked of me. Not, “What’s your favorite book?” or “What’s your favorite Disney movie?”

No. How good is your hearing?

Rather, are you a product of your parents’ culture or a product of everyone else’s culture?

When I did answer, I was always indignant. Why can’t I be both?

Each time, I would assert myself and say, “No. I’m half.” Half-deaf, half-hearing. I would make the sign

of parting my head in half, insisting that I could be both—that I could identify with both my deaf family, and my hearing family.

The thing is, the sign for “half” is similar to the sign for “God.” Yes, you read correctly: when people asked little 5-year-old me what her hearing capabilities were, she answered with, “No. I am God.” It was a problem. It was hilarious. Just try not to laugh when a kid insists that they’re the second coming of Christ.

We’re the pissed-off kids of a generation, the misfits, the broken, the forgotten and unwanted, the used, but when we come together we are so much more than that.

We are a family who supports and understands each other. We give one another hope and strength through knowing smiles and steadying hands.

To most, this is just a concert. To us, this is home.

edical advances since 1999 have made a prescription treatment method for addiction a very real, viable option for those in need.

Dr. Neil Flynn, founder of Priorities Clinic in Sacramento, treats dozens of sufferers of opioid addiction every day by administering the “recovery drug” buprenorphine. By maintaining a prescription regimen, Dr. Flynn says many of his patients are able to overcome their opioid dependency and lead healthy, stable lives.

“Some diseases mandate the use of medication on a daily basis,” Dr. Flynn says. “Addiction is one of those diseases.”

Unlike methadone, he says buprenorphine does not cause any mind-altering effects. In other words, there is no “high.”

“With this medication, patients have no difficulty holding down a job and living normal lives because they aren’t thinking about where and how they’re going to get their next high — that need is alleviated,” Dr. Flynn says.

By maintaining a prescription regimen, many of Dr. Flynn’s patients are able to overcome their opioid dependency and lead healthy, stable lives.

Buprenorphine works by blocking the receptors in the brain that normally respond to opioid use; when the drug is missing

from the system, the brain fires withdrawal pain signals. With burprenorphine in the system, that pain is abated without altering the mental state.

Dr. Flynn’s patients run the gamut of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common: a pressing desire to lead a functional life as soon as possible.

“These are people who want to get out of the hassle of the hustle,” Dr. Flynn says. “It’s not a sustainable lifestyle even for those who are completely dependent on the drug.”

Dr. Flynn says that despite the popular misconception that medically assisted treatment is costly, keeping up a street habit is far more expensive than treating one.

My grandfather would be ashamed to see his physical and mental deterioration. I’ve learned there is no culprit to blame, that it’s not some punishment from God or karma; it’s a reminder of our transience.

Although our senses may argue contrarily, nothing in this world is of permanence. Not the dollars saved in my bank account or my long black hair. And I’ve accepted that, because now I place greater importance not in my material matters, but in my beliefs.

Endless hours spent agonizing over every word in a sentence.

Toiling away on a particularly and maddeningly elusive passage. The writing process can be\ an exercise in humility and agony when the words don’t pour easily from the wellspring of imagination.

Fortunately, area writers don’t have to suffer through the process alone.

Thanks to the creative writing faculty at American River College, scribes at every level are afforded the opportunity to work through their literary challenges among peers and mentors at the fourth annual SummerWords Creative Writing Festival, which takes place on campus from May 28 to May 31.

The event includes numerous panels, workshops and readings with featured guests such as Jodi Angel, Michael Spurgeon, Christian Kiefer and Jason Sinclair Long. Renowned poet Carolyn Forché will give the festival’s keynote reading.

For author Erika Mailman, one of the festival’s presenters, the event is not about giving writers an opportunity to sit on panels and talk at an audience; it’s a chance for everyone to engage in a dialogue about the creative-writing process.

“This is a great thing for all Sacramentans—it’s something for

everybody in the community, whether they’re a writer or a reader or someone who’s just curious to come out,” Mailman explains. “It’s extraordinary because if you look at the schedule in every one-hour time slot, there’s like three or four things going on, so you have to pick and choose your experience.”

For Mailman, Sacramento’s writing community comprises a robust sphere of local creative culture and has afforded her the opportunity to connect with those who can help strengthen and enrich her own work.

“I feel like writing is a lonely pursuit—it’s us and our words for a long time,” Mailman says. “And it’s so fruitful and exhilarating to meet with others who like to [write], and to share what your struggle has been, and talk shop.

That is really what community is; it’s coming together when we finally leave the solitary stuff aside.”

In short, Mailman says, the festival embraces this idea of escaping the solitude of the creative process; better yet, guests such as Forché, the 1976 winner of the Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize, help give the festival literary legitimacy.

“SummerWords is … the kind of literary festival you would expect on a much bigger campus,” Mailman says.

“This is really the kind of festival of caliber and quality that a larger university would be putting on.”

Mailman, an adjunct in the ARC English department who writes under the pen name Lynn Carthage, came to the college three years ago after a teaching stint in Oakland at the behest of a member of the ARC faculty.

“I connected with somebody … on Facebook who I went to college with in Maine and then graduate school in Arizona … but we had never met,” Mailman reflects. “But we had these three very specific idiosyncratic connections, and so I was like, ‘Maybe we should have coffee,’ and that was Michael Spurgeon, who teaches fulltime in the English department.”

Certainly those on the ARC hiring committee took note of the Vermont native’s notable accomplishments when deciding to welcome her to its ranks: Her novel The Witch’s Trinity was named as a San Francisco Chronicle Notable Book in 2007 and was also a Bram Stoker Award finalist; her 2007 book Woman of Ill Fame was a Pushcart Press Editors’ Book Award nominee. Mailman is also a juror for the Shirley Jackson Awards and a freelance magazine writer.

The festival also includes local writer and ARC instructor Christian Kiefer, author of The Animals, released earlier this year to critical acclaim, who will be discussing novelwriting. You swirl, inhale deeply, sip and ponder. You have no clue what to think. Luckily, the pourer tells you that you’re probably tasting earthy truffle, black pepper, violet and raspberry, and you act like, yes, of course, you detected those all along.

That’s my usual wine tasting experience. Fun, yes; enjoyable, of course; but I never feel confident in my assessments.

Hence my huge surprise when I attended a sensory evaluation seminar at the inaugural Amador Four Fires Festival earlier this month and I correctly guessed—err, sensed—the highest number of wine aromas in the room.

“One thing we know about our sense of smell is that we aren’t very good at it,” our seminar leader said. “The only difference between you and wine experts is that they practice.”

That’s some serious motivation to drink way more wine.

Then again, pacing is key when starting at 11 a.m. on a hot day with more than 150 wines from 40 Amador County wineries to choose from. The festival, held at Amador County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, presented those wines in four different zones: Rhone (Southern France), Italy, Iberia (Spain and Portugal) and “Heritage California.” Those zones also featured open-fire dishes prepared by Amador chefs.

That meant syrah with lamb and mustard; barbera with smoky pork; tempranillo with crusty paella; and zinfandel with stewed-goat tacos. Plus, a marketplace with local hard cider, beer, olive oil and confections; conversational seminars on food and wine pairings, wine caves and the wonders of cheese; and intimate cooking demos.

Four Fires managed to wholeheartedly celebrate Amador County—an undervalued resource for excellent wine—while also transporting folks to other parts of the world. I knew Amador County churned out scoff at here. intensely peppery zinfandels, but I didn’t quite make the connection that the area’s terroir is similar to Mediterranean climates like the Southern Rhone Valley and Italy. That means similar grapes thrive across those regions, and I love me some viognier and sangiovese.

Among the wines I tasted, the viogniers—and some viognier-chenin blanc blends—were consistently crisp and wonderful, and the barberas bright and full of berries.

There were some real treats—the bold and oaky 2012 Grand Wren from Renwood, which I later learned goes for $99 per bottle—and surprises: little-known Spanish blending grape carignane, floral and lovely roussanne and teroldego, one of the oldest-ever Italian varietals. Terra d’Oro Winery bottles the latter.

Festival, winery and culinary staff alike were friendly, easygoing and unpretentious. The clientele? Overwhelmingly white, but also friendly, easygoing and unpretentious. The average age was probably 45 or 50, and it seemed like every other man wore a brightly patterned Tommy Bahama shirt.

Unlike in Napa, being a wine novice with lots of questions was nothing to scoff at here.

And for a first-time festival, everything flowed remarkably smoothly. No long lines but plenty of bathrooms, shaded seating and water—what else can you really ask for? Plus, no one seemed to mind when I stretched out on the grass to take a mid-festival nap.

Instead, this is a weekend-long festival with a low-key indie feel, featuring a quartet of events: a pool party, a parade, an afterparty and a park cleanup session. And it’s all themed around the mythical mermaid—the half-human, half-fish sea creature—of course.

This year’s celebration begins with the pool party (free, noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, May 29, at the Hyatt Regency, 1209 L Street). Kids and adults can both swim with some of Dive Bar’s mermaids (adult supervision required for all kids) with a lifeguard present. Following

that is the fifth annual Sacramento Promenade of Mermaids (free advance registration, $5 on the day of the event; noon on Saturday, May 30, in Old Sacramento). The promenade, which is basically a fancy name for a parade, begins and ends at the Delta King, 1000 Front Street. Though registration isn’t required to participate in the parade, registered participants will be able to compete in a costume contest, with prizes awarded in both adult and kids’ categories.

They are the waxy kind, which means they have more moisture and make great potato salads—on hot days, avoid food poisoning by making oil-based dressings instead of mayobased ones. Something salty like olives or bacon works wonders with these little orbs, as well as something vinegary, like capers or chopped pickles. Or, try boiling them until tender, then halve the potatoes and scoop out a little from each cut side. Fill the holes with sour cream and chives or caviar, if you’re feeling fancy.

Day’s 4Long Journey Into Night Veteran pro Ed Claudio and four members of his Actor’s Workshop of Sacramento assay Eugene O’Neill’s monumental (and semi-autobiographical) family drama. They do a pretty respectable job getting this classic on its feet—despite the seemingly polite life these folks are living at their summer home in 1912, you can feel the Tyrone clan disintegrating.

It’s all here: elder son Jamie (Jeff Machado) sliding into alcoholism before he’s 40; younger son Edmund (Zach Coles) trying to keep his spirits up as the doctors tell him he has tuberculosis and needs to go to a sanitarium; their mother Mary (Scarlet O’Connor) relapsing into morphine addiction (and pretending that she isn’t doing so, after maintaining that she really was going to quit the drug this time); and cantankerous patriarch James Tyrone (Ed Claudio) facing accusations from his sons that Mary’s morphine problem stems from sending her to cheap doctors rather than quality physicians.

Rounding out the cast is Katie Walton as the maid Cathleen, trying to do her job and not get too involved.

They’re all engaging in self-deception and proud denial. And as a foghorn moans in the background, and the men take turns pouring each other drinks and mom retreats upstairs, where they all know she’ll shoot up with another dose from some hidden stash, the playwright unfolds some of the greatest scenes in American theater. If you’ve never seen this play staged (and there aren’t a lot of opportunities to do so locally), you should.

The script has been trimmed a bit (the show still runs three hours). The production values are strictly “no frills,” the theater itself is small and plain, but the acting ranges from “worthy yeoman” to “high caliber.” Kudos to Claudio for being the only guy in town to stage this American landmark in recent years.

“Our audiences really appreciate a good, solid My Fair Lady and West Side Story,” Richard Lewis, president and CEO of California Musical Theatre, said. “My Fair Lady is one of the most beautiful examples of musical theater. … On the other hand, Big River [June 23 through June 28] is a totally different kind of musical and hasn’t played at Music Circus in 20 years.”

Bye Bye Birdie (July 7 through July 12) and Peter Pan (July 21 through July 26) round out the five-show subscription season.

For the first time this year, Music Circus will offer one show that is an option to the season: Hair, the so-called American tribal love-rock musical, which introduced rock ’n’ roll to Broadway, paving the road for Spring Awakening and Rent, among others. The musical, with its peace-and-love sentiment—and brief nudity—created a sensation when it debuted on Broadway in April 1968. This will be the first time it has played at Music Circus since 1976.

Hair will be performed August 18 through August 23.

All shows run Tuesday through Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances are Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., with the exception of Hair, which won’t let the sun shine in and has no Sunday matinee.

God’s Ear is an edgy, nonconforming drama that gives voice to the pain and agony of parents after the a tragic death of their young son leaves them bereaved and confused on how to deal with their emotions—both as parents and as a couple. The play is both fascinating and frustrating. Playwright Jenny Schwartz eloquently and cleverly drops the curtain on inner pain, but also adds elements that are needless and distracting, such as bringing the Tooth Fairy and G.I. This is a violent, unsettling play that, while compelling and intriguing at times, unfortunately loses its way. Part of the problem lies in the jumpy and uneven storyline and characters, while the other problem is fluctuating tone and genres. It’s a Southern Gothic murder mystery—part film noir, part dark comedy, part social commentary.

The Sacramento Ballet laid off all of its dancers for the remainder of their contracts (three weeks) and canceled the Beer and Ballet performances that would have closed the season later this month. The dancers, for their part, have founded the new Capital Dance Project to present their own show, Beyond the Barre, on May 30 at the Crest Theatre. The dance project’s website states: “It has been a longtime dream of the Sacramento Ballet dancers to form an independent summer dance project and recent events have catapulted this dream into a reality.” The dancers “all pulled together to create (the new) group,” dancer Stefan Calka said. “We’ve put the show together in about five days with a lot of the dances already made for Beer and Ballet.”

The event also features a cash bar, live music and local art.

Runway to irrelevancy Saint Laurent Biopics tend to take on the personalities of their subjects, and writer-director Bertrand Bonello’s fashion biopic Saint Laurent offers all of the clean, by Daniel Barnes flowing lines of the Algerian-born designer’s iconic fashions, while remaining just as mercurial and indulgent as the man. It’s a stubbornly oblique, aloofly stylish and oddly compelling film that offers little biographical context or narrative form, instead compiling a Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould-style mix tape of banal and crucial (and crucially banal) moments from Yves Saint Laurent’s life, forming a fascinating silhouette of an ultimately unknowable man.

Like almost every good biopic, Bonello’s film doesn’t try to compact its subject’s entire life into a three-act narrative, but rather concentrates on a very specific period, in this case the time between 1968 and 1976 when Saint Laurent was at the height of his fame. Saint Laurent is unique in that it’s not a story about an artist’s difficult ascent toward triumph, but about his easy descent from triumph toward irrelevance and into oblivion. The Yves Saint Laurent that we see here devolves from a man into a brand into mere initials, and finally into nothing. By the end of his life, an oversized photo of Saint Laurent is deemed an acceptable, even preferable, stand-in at an important company event.

Bonello opens the film in 1974, as an exhausted Saint Laurent (played well by Gaspard Ulliel) checks into a Paris hotel room and prepares to give his first tell-all interview. We mostly see him from behind, an outline of a man with thick glasses and an inscrutable expression, and by the end of this 150-minute film he feels just as vaporous and unembraceable. After the prologue, Bonello cuts back to 1968, with Saint Laurent riding high on his prêt-á-porter popularity, haunting nightclubs into the dawn and cruising the streets for men while carrying on a relationship with his business partner Pierre Bergé (Jérémie Renier, a favorite of the Dardenne brothers).

The designer that we see in 1968 is aloof and withdrawn, but he’s also genuinely engaged with his work, an exacting artist, restlessly sketching

and creating, not the hollowed-out husk we see in 1974. In one of the film’s most indelible moments, Saint Laurent spies the statuesque blonde model Betty Catroux in a nightclub booth, and briefly envisions himself in her place, the artist and his writhing muse fused into one.

But as the YSL brand merges with an American corporate entity, mundane economic realities and unrealistic expectations clash with artistic ambitions, and Saint Laurent the man becomes less important than Saint Laurent the brand.

An exposed and soul-sapped Saint Laurent retreats into the narcotic comfort of prescription medication and the lifeless company of ennui-drenched, hard-partying sycophants. While the world outside goes through the wringer of social unrest, Saint Laurent remains sealed in a disco fishbowl ribboned with neon rainbow skies, a blaring temple to “bodies without souls” that affords him “no contact with reality.” One of Bonello’s best—and most potentially alienating—techniques is to crank the soundtrack music up so loud that it blots out the possibility of discernible conversation, and we see how Saint Laurent clings to club life as a way of shutting out human contact. As Laurent’s life nods off into a dutiful orgy of drugs, booze, pills and men, Bonello treats it with the same elegant zombie detachment, like Spring Breakers directed by “alienation trilogy”-era Michelangelo Antonioni.

One of Bonello’s best— and most potentially alienating—techniques is to crank the soundtrack music up so loud that it blots out the possibility of discernible conversation.

The standoffish tone, deliberate pace, lengthy running time and zombie protagonist of Saint Laurent seem designed to frustrate and alienate audiences (it crashed and burned at Cannes last year), but I felt intoxicated by the simple, sexy camera moves of cinematographer Josée Deshaies, and by Bonello’s piecemeal portrait of artistic desiccation. There are times when the film is too on-the-nose, as in a sequence where a parade of Saint Laurent seasonal lines gets split-screened with scenes of the protests and riots occurring outside of his bubble. But a few ill-conceived and annoyingly self-conscious moments aside, Saint Laurent stands as a beautiful and bleak portrayal of artistic success as the ultimate artistic poison. Ω

An aging married couple (Morgan Freeman, Diane Keaton) run the gauntlet of selling their Brooklyn apartment, finding a better one and dealing with their beloved dog’s health crisis, even as all of New York is paralyzed by a possible terrorist incident. The script by Charlie Peters (from Jill Ciment’s novel Heroic Measures) is lightweight; with any two other stars it might be downright forgettable, but Freeman and Keaton couldn’t be forgettable if they tried, and they lift the movie into something tender and almost moving. Adding a dash of urban frenzy is Cynthia Nixon as their niece and real estate agent, while flashbacks sketch in their past, with Korey Jackson and Claire van der Boom flawlessly cast as Freeman and Keaton’s younger selves.

Richard Loncraine’s sure-handed direction is another plus. J.L.

The “most unlikely partnership” of Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp was born out of the headstrong illogic of youth—a crazy scheme by a couple of frustrated assistant film directors to manage an unknown rock band to stardom, with the ultimate intent of making a Hard Day’s Night-like film that would launch their directing careers—that only seemed more illogical when that band became The Who. Although they had never managed or produced anyone before, the combination of the welltravelled, Oxford-educated Lambert and the suave Cockney con man Stamp (brother of actor Terence) meshed with The Who’s dysfunctional family dynamics—their lack of musical sophistication fostered a try-anything environment, and their long-form storytelling ambitions nudged Pete Townshend towards Tommy. James D. Cooper’s documentary is superficial but heady, a breathless ride through 1960s mod culture driven largely by the irresistible personality of Stamp and the propulsive, wall-to-wall Who music. Mad Max: Fury Road

The first Mad Max movie in 30 years has Tom Hardy stepping in for Mel Gibson as the cop-turned-vigilante-loner roving a postapocalyptic world. Here our antihero teams up cautiously with a female warrior (Charlize Theron) as the two seek to escape from a savage warlord (Hugh Keays-Byrne), taking the tyrant’s five wives with them to freedom. The script by Brendan McCarthy, Nico Lathouris and director George Miller wastes little time on subtlety—or dialogue, for that matter; its few words are often mumbled or bellowed into unintelligibility. But it hardly matters; the movie is one long-running battle scene expertly staged and paced by Miller, with a judicious use of CGI that doesn’t insult us with the blatantly impossible. All we really need to know is who the good guys are, and Miller gives us that. J.L.

Far from the Madding Crowd

Thomas Vinterberg directed half a dozen features, a few TV movies and a handful of music videos in between the time he made his 1998 breakthrough The Celebration and his 2012 “comeback” The Hunt, but he’s gained such a stern, quiet confidence since then that his new stuff feels like the work of a changed man. The Hunt was a study in cruel suspicion in which a small-town schoolteacher’s life and reputation are destroyed by the innocent lie of a child, and Vinterberg tills similar soil in his

Far from the Madding Crowd is maybe not quite an equal to The Hunt, but it’s the more impressive achievement—a beautifully mounted, fiercely intelligent, bracingly alive literary adaptation that remains an unabashed crowd-pleaser. THE STORY AS IT HAS NEVER BEEN TOLD BEFORE

First a young boy in 1964 (Thomas Robinson, growing up to be George Clooney), then a teenage girl in 2014 (Britt Robertson), get a glimpse of a beautiful distant future—but it may not happen unless they can somehow save it, with the aid of a girlish android (Raffey Cassidy). Written by Damon Lindelof, Jeff Jensen and Brad Bird (who directs with joyful exuberance), the movie is a near-brilliant nexus of art, craftsmanship and marketing, painting a compellingly optimistic picture of the power of children and the young at heart to shape the future. Robertson is high-spirited, while Clooney reminds us how good he can be when someone else is directing him. As for the remarkable young Cassidy—well, next year’s supporting actress Oscar is clearly spoken for; what a pity she’ll almost certainly be overlooked. J.L.

LAMBERT & STAMP BLACK SOULS

The future is apparently very murky.

The movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are designed to be selfperpetuating sequel machines, soulless products whose only purpose is to set up the next several films in a never ending series of sequel machines. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Marvel “solo” movies like Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier conquer the global box office, and the Avengers movies serve as de facto victory laps/bro-outs. That’s a solid formula, for printing money and hypnotizing a generation of helpless youth into believing that these films count as entertainment if nothing else, and Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn’t deviate from the formula for a second.

Writer-director Joss Whedon is pretty much locked into an overarching storyline and a bland house style here, so instead of bucking the system, he dutifully serves up more of the same bubble-brained gibberish and wanton destruction. D.B,

On the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, a Los Angeles theater director (Simon Abkarian) prepares a play commemorating the horror, but is beset by demonstrators, literally on all sides: Turks denying that the atrocity ever happened, and Armenians outraged that the play shows an Armenian woman (Angela Sarafyan) surviving by abandoning her family for a Turkish soldier. Worse yet, a series of eerie accidents suggests the presence of ghostly protesters. First-time writer-directors Garin Hovannisian and Alec Mouhibian grapple valiantly with their theme, but it seems too vast for their fledgling talents and their limited budget. There are many solemnly striking images, thanks in large part to the haunting faces of the actors, but the story is muddled, unfocused and pounded across with sledgehammers. J.L.

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD

“RIOTOUSLY ENTERTAINING.”

This Swedish offering is about as lighthearted and inconsequential as a dark comedy dealing with mass murder and nihilistic destruction can possibly get. While escaping both the police and a cartoonish biker gang, centenarian Allan Karlsson (50-year-old Robert Gustafsson) flashes back to his youthful discovery of “how good it feels to blow things up,” a proclivity that led him to fateful meetings with Franco, Stalin and Robert Oppenheimer, and into inadvertently becoming the architect of the Cold War. If that’s not weird and wacky enough: oompah music! In the flashback scenes, director Felix Herngren seems to be going for a Forrest Gump-like historical fable, but in the more manic present-day scenes, Herngren leans on glib violence and weak screenwriting clichés. It’s an unusual ride to say the least, a mouthful of a title and several fistfuls of ideas, often quite inventive and funny, but a little too flippant to fully recommend. D.B.

toss them into yet another variation on the old underdogs-at-the-world-competition story.

The result, under the arrhythmic direction of the otherwise talented Elizabeth Banks, is a near-disaster—a comedy that isn’t funny and a musical that isn’t tuneful (and once again, this supposed a capella group doesn’t sing unaccompanied). The net effect is wincing sympathy for Anna Kendrick and Hailee Steinfeld, who deserve better. Most of the rest of the cast, having no discernible talent, can count their blessings to be working at all. (And what’s with Rebel Wilson? Aren’t her 15 minutes about ready to run out?) J.L.

If this patently unnecessary but extremely well-made remake of Poltergeist was presented as one of the innumerable rehashes of the 1982 PG-horror classic instead of as a full-on remake, it wouldn’t have received nearly the critical drubbing it got this week. As in the Tobe Hooper original, a middleclass family moves into a quiet suburban neighborhood, and finds that their home is haunted by an angry presence that takes the youngest child hostage. In almost every sense, Gil Kenan’s version falls short of Hooper’s, and doesn’t do enough to differentiate itself, other than updating the technology and changing the parents (Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt) from hippie sellouts into credit cardwielding Gen X-ers hit hard by the recession.

But for all of the script’s tentativeness, Kenan (Monster House) brings a high level of craft to his haunted house film, matching recent overhyped ghost stories like The Conjuring and Insidious. D.B.

Taking its cue from the sort of pandering nostalgia that usually gets peddled to Baby Boomers, Mat Whitecross’ irritating Spike Island follows a teenage gang of the Stone Roses’ superfans in 1990 Manchester. While getting their own Stone Roses-influenced group off the ground, the boys try to score tickets to the band’s legendary concert on Spike Island, which the film naturally insists “defined a generation.” At least the music licensing is impeccable—every song from the Stone Roses’ self-titled debut album gets played here.

Whitecross tries to match the energy of the music with his camera, but his film is a poseur, a lot closer to Detroit Rock City than Rock ’n’ Roll High School. Spike Island came out in England two years ago, and it’s being released now to coincide with the high visibility of Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, who is barely in the movie. D.B.

Omnian Music Group. Concurrently, Graves discovered Fox’s now defunct Tumblr and the site struck a chord with her. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Graves, So Stressed was in the midst of mastering its debut album. Then, Graves decided to move to Brooklyn, as suggested

by Sniper, to launch Honor Press and Fox eventually revealed to her that his band had a completed record.

Graves, according to an interview she did with the Village Voice, listened to 10 minutes of the record and decided it would be her first release.

The members of So Stressed were more than open to this idea.

“Knowing that she’s a cool person and works incredibly hard, she’s constantly busy, but she puts her full attention into everything,” Fox said. “It seemed to us that as soon as that was even a glimmer of an option we all wanted to pursue it.”

Through email Graves said the immediacy of Unlawful Trade lit a fire to start Honor Press sooner than intended.

“There’s something so special about an album that almost never saw the light of day,” Graves wrote. “To me, this album is like a news story about someone taking a vase that’s been sitting around in their basement for years to be appraised and finding out it’s rare and worth millions.”

Debuting on a label that lists “No Snobs.

No Phonies. No Shitheads” as its manifesto, So Stressed’s Unlawful Trade has found its rightful home, as there isn’t an inkling of hauteur in the LP’s battered and bruised duration of posthardcore mania.

Dozens of Sacramento bands could benefit from learning how to secure a record deal with a reputable indie label, but the following is not a how-to by Blake Gillespie lesson. Local labels are on the endangered species list, while the sort with connections to major media outlets to merit the pressing of 1,000 copies are mostly extinct.

Morgan Fox of Sacramento’s So Stressed lucked out, however: his band cruised past the road block of pressing and distribution conundrums by befriending Perfect Pussy lead singer Meredith Graves.

So Stressed, a post-hardcore three-piece, went to work on a follow-up to its 2012 self-released cassette Attracted To Open Mouths in February 2014; recording once again with Patrick Hills in his bedroom studio Earth Tone in Roseville.

Singer Fox, alongside drummer Andrew Garcia and guitarist Kenneth Draper, had few definitive plans that winter beyond finishing the record and finding a label.

“We certainly were not going to self-release it,” Fox said. “I wanted to see this album on vinyl. If we couldn’t find someone who would do that, then we were not going to release it.”

While the band had correspondence with a Bay Area label, ultimately there were no visible leads to bankroll their vision. Thus begins the cosmic alignment which led to the fortune of The Unlawful Trade Of Greco-Roman Art receiving a proper release this past week.

“Before she knew I was in a band, we’d been talking [on the Internet] and becoming friends,” Fox said of getting to know Meredith Graves, singer for the acclaimed New York-based band Perfect Pussy.

It all began with the success of Perfect Pussy’s Say Yes To Love LP. Captured Tracks indie label founder Mike Sniper had put the idea of starting an imprint in Graves’ head, with the intent for it to exist under the umbrella of his

Morgan Fox singer-songwriter, So Stressed “So Stressed is the first and likely the ultimate act to represent what I see as the motto and eventual legacy of Honor Press,” she said.

“Unlawful Trade is an album that was made out of the pure desire to make exactly that album— and that desire drives the album sonically. That bloodlust is what made me beg Morgan to let me put it out.”

Meanwhile Fox in his ever-humble outlook toward the intent and trajectory of So Stressed, offered, “We wanted something weird and noisy.

“We just wanted to write rock ’n’ roll songs that are fun to play and make them sound really bad, harsh and ugly—just tough to listen to.” Ω

Rock on, melt off First First Festival: It’s good to

the edge of stage while barely taking a breath. He’s clearly got a lot of charisma and heart, and he drew a lot of attention from those still wandering around the festival.

According to First Festival’s Vincent, we can expect another edition in 2016—and she hopes it’ll be free.

see River Walk Park put to such good use. The waterfront in West Sacramento has been in desperate need of a music festival to properly utilize its cozy space, and the inaugural First Festival this past Saturday did just that.

Live music was spread out between three stages, with vendors sprinkled between and food trucks parked above the park. The festival felt only moderately crowded—to be expected the first year—but First Festival organizer Danielle Vincent says approximately 3,000 people were in attendance. That’s quite a bit more than the initially anticipated 2,000, especially considering general admission tickets went from free to $15.

Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, and there was quite a bit to do in the small space, like shop for jewelry, purses, soap, T-shirts and original artwork—all from local creators and boutique-owners. There was also a juggalo painting people’s faces, and a criminally underutilized silent disco, which never seemed to have more than one person dancing at any given moment.

Folk and rock dominated the lineup, with some punk, metal and hip-hop thrown in. Local favorite folk-rock quartet Be Brave Bold Robot played a mid-afternoon set. It was laid-back and lighthearted, with bassist Matt Gerken providing some lush harmonies. They played some older tunes as well as their newer, more eclectic songs, including their ode to Sacramento (“Too big to be a bubble / but small enough to keep us out of trouble”) and a lovely, educational tune about the manufacturing and production of maple syrup.

Really.

Thick Soup later performed a great drumless Americana set, with excellent four-part harmonies and lots of crispy, old-timey stringpluckin’. Carly DuHain’s group Drop Dead Red played an energetic set of moody blues-rock. DuHain was the true star—her husky, soulful voice was emotionally stirring for all witnesses.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was main-stage support act Dylan Phillip, a young rapper who was backed by a live band bouncing between funky-jazzy beats, alt-rock jams and even a little bit of postpunk grooves. Phillip seemed almost unaware of the genre-shifting tunes, instead spitting rapid-fire verses at

Rock heaven: Ex Hex must have roared into Midtown like a fearsome motorcycle gang last Thursday night, but I missed the entrance.

I just saw the band live on stage, peeling off white-hot guitar licks and shredding like the soundtrack to a thundering drag race—the sound blown up to arena size and then stuffed tightly into Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub.

Parked haphazardly at the corner of Thin Lizzy and .38 Special, it’s the revenge of pure, uncut rock ’n’ roll. Most of their songs ended with the band huddled around the drum kit, conjuring up majestic slabs of rebellious rock for a very dedicated crowd.

Ex Hex’s debut album Rips makes for a pleasant, tuneful romp through the garages of the ’70s— balanced muscle-car classic rock against punk minimalism. Live, it became something more visceral— something like the perfect rock ’n’ roll beast. Their encore cover of Sweet’s “Fox On The Run” couldn’t have made more sense.

Singer-guitarist Mary Timony is a familiar face to fans of indie rock as a member of Helium and Wild Flag, and she even contributed to the 2005 debut album by Sacto’s own Team Sleep. But Ex Hex is her coronation as an honest-to-god guitar hero. From opener “Don’t Wanna Lose” through Rips standouts “Beast” and “You Fell Apart,” it was her no-frills leads and buzz-saw rhythm playing that paved the way to rock ’n’ roll Valhalla.

Bassist Betsy Wright and drummer Laura Harris deserve special mentions for driving the bus like they stole it, with Wright making a solid attempt to steal the show with lead vocals on “How You Got That Girl,” a legit bass solo on “Beast” and my girlfriend awarding her the title of Hottest Member of Ex Hex. I honestly didn’t notice—my face was being melted off.

The Portland eight-piece band conveys its desperation and feelings about the “slow hot death of the world” with pedal steel, flute and a trumpet section. San Francisco weirdo-funkster RonKat Spearman has the fashion sense of what someone in the ’50s might imagine people in 2015 to dress like—complete with a crazy mohawk-pompadour hybrid and a seemingly out-of-place flying-V guitar. He and his group lay down the kind of dirty grooves that P-Funk plays for 15 minutes straight, but with songwriting as experimental as Prince’s less commercial records. It all makes sense; RonKat Spearman spent a solid decade playing guitar for Parliament, and now he brings his offbeat, future-funk meets psych-rock jams to stages with his own band backing him.

Listen for nuances of the late B.B. King and Albert Collins—from a man who’s been praised by Elvin Bishop. His CDs are great, but the only way to really appreciate Castro and his band is to see them perform live. But these four scallywags also sometimes bring in guests from a group of musicians they dub “the Stowaways” to contribute keys, congas and even some viola from time FOLK-ROCK to time. The Sealegs are in the process of recording a debut EP, Slow & Steady, due for a summer release rumored to coincide with their first tour. Italy’s Ufomammut has produced some of the greatest atmospheric doom metal in years.

Since starting the band 16 years ago, this trio has paid tribute to its most obvious influence, early Pink Floyd, and incorporated an ethePSYCHEDELIC real heaviness not DOOM METAL readily found in the genre. Ecate is Ufomammut’s latest six-song release and features many tracks that are much too long for any commercial station.

The new album strikes many internal chords on tracks like the pummeling “Plouton” and the ambient track “Revelation,” which recalls moments of Jean-Michel Jarre during his Oxygene era. These individuals struggle until they learn to manage their brains, instead of allowing their brain to drive.

There are also people who use drugs to blot out traumatic memories. A competent psychotherapist would diagnose them with post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from childhoods in violent households or neighborhoods.

Through talk therapy, people with PTSD heal old wounds, shake off addiction and learn the skills of self-care so they can handle any future conflict. And, then there are people with profoundly dependent personalities who use drugs recreationally because that’s what their squad does. But, unlike the rest of their friends, these people develop addictions. Oh, and there are teenagers whose parents are so controlling, the teens check out from life through an addiction, rather than becoming who their parents demand they be.

Do any of these paths to addiction sound familiar?

Years ago, I trained with a Mayan healer from the same lineage as my great-grandmothers.

Traditional Mayan healers believe that everything has a spirit and those spirits take corresponding actions.

The spirit of an illicit drug pushes a person’s spirit out of his or her body. So the more drugs someone does, the more common it becomes that we are talking to the drug (or its spirit), and not the person. The healer’s work is to lure the person’s spirit back into the body. I think of it this way: A drug’s career path is to kill. If we want to free someone from a drug addiction, we must inspire that person to trust their own capacity for creating the life they want to live. That’s why you should hold a vision of hope for your son. He deserves to have someone cradling his spirit until he can will it back into himself. Keep your thoughts and emotions clean. Be honest about dysfunctional family dynamics and change them. As you clear yourself out, you will be available to hear and see your son and to support him in saving himself. Ω

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Keith Moon

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): I suspect

that marriages of convenience will begin to wither away unless they evolve into bonds of affection. Connections that have been fed primarily on fun and games must acquire more ballast. In fact, I recommend that you re-evaluate all your contracts and agreements. How are they working for you? Do they still serve the purpose you want them to? Is it time to acknowledge that they have transformed and need to be reconfigured? As you take inventory, be both tough-minded and compassionate.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The weta

is a very large insect whose habitat is New Zealand. It looks like a robotic grasshopper, with giant black eyes on a long red face, enlarged hind legs bearing spikes and floppy, oversized antennae. The native Maori people call it “the god of the ugly things.” Please note that this is a term of respect. The weta’s title is not “the most monstrous of the ugly things” or “the worst” or “the scariest” or “the most worthless of the ugly things.” Rather, the Maori say it’s the god—the highest, the best, the most glorious. I suspect that in the coming days, Taurus, you will have a close encounter with your own version of a “god of ugly things.” Doesn’t it deserve your love and welcome?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Petrarch was an influential 14th-century Italian poet whose main work was Song Book. It’s a collection of 366 poems, most of which are dedicated to Laura, the woman he loved. For 40 years he churned out testaments of longing and appreciation for her, despite the fact that he and she never spent time together. She was married to another man, and was wrapped up in raising her 11 children. Should we judge Petrarch harshly for choosing a muse who was so unavailable? I don’t. Muse-choosing is a mysterious and sacred process that transcends logic. I’m bringing the subject to your attention because you’re entering a new phase in your relationship with muses. It’s either time to choose a new one (or two?) or else adjust your bonds with your current muses.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You have

successfully made the transition from brooding caterpillar to social butterfly.

Soon you will be in your full, fluttery glory, never lingering too long with one thought, one friend or one identity. Some heavy- duty, level-headed stalwarts might wish you would be more earthy and anchored, but I don’t share their concern. At least for now, having a long attention span is overrated. You have entered the fidgety, inquisitive part of your cycle, when flitting and flirting and flickering make perfect sense.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

“The soul moves in circles,” said the ancient Greek philosopher Plotinus.

Modern psychologist James Hillman agreed, and added this thought: “Hence our lives are not moving straight ahead; instead, hovering, wavering, returning, renewing, repeating.” I bring this to your attention, Capricorn, because you’re now in an extra-intense phase of winding and rambling. This is a good thing! You are spiraling back to get another look at interesting teachings you didn’t master the first time around. You are building on past efforts that weren’t strong enough.

Your words of power are crooked, gyrate, curvy, labyrinthine and corkscrew.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Only one

fear is worthy of you. Only one fear is real enough and important enough to awaken and activate the numb part of your intelligence. So for now, I suggest that you retire all lesser fears. Stuff them in a garbage bag and hide them in a closet.

Then put on your brave champion face, gather the allies and resources you need, and go forth into glorious battle. Wrestle with your one fear. Reason with it. If necessary, use guile and trickery to gain an advantage. Call on divine inspiration and be a wickedly good truth-teller. And this is crucial: Use your fear to awaken and activate the numb part of your intelligence.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): It’s no

coincidence that your libido and your mojo are booming at the same time. Your libido is in the midst of a deep, hearty awakening, which is generating a surplus of potent, superfine mojo. And your surplus of potent, superfine mojo is in turn inciting your libido’s even deeper, heartier awakening. There may be times in the coming week when you feel like you are living with a wild animal. As long as you keep the creature well-fed and well-stroked, it should provide you with lots of vigorous, even boisterous fun.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In the coming

nights, try to see your shadow as it’s cast on the ground by the moon. Not by the sun, mind you. Look for the shadow that’s made by the light of the moon. It might sound farfetched, but I suspect this experience will have a potent impact on your subconscious mind. It may jostle loose secrets that you have been hiding from yourself. I bet it will give you access to emotions and intuitions you have been repressing. It could also help you realize that some of the deep, dark stuff you wrestle with is not bad and scary, but rather fertile and fascinating.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “I always

arrive late at the office, but I make up for it by leaving early,” quipped 19th-century English author Charles Lamb. I invite you to adopt that breezy, lazy attitude in the coming weeks. It’s high time for you to slip into a very comfortable, laid-back mood … to give yourself a lot of slack, explore the mysteries of dreamy indolence, and quiet down the chirpy voices in your head. Even if you can’t literally call in sick to your job and spend a few days wandering free, do everything you can to claim as much low-pressure, unhurried spaciousness as possible.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): The ancient

Greek statesman Demosthenes was regarded as a supremely skilled orator. His speeches were so powerful that he was compared to a “blazing thunderbolt.” And yet as a youngster he spoke awkwardly.

Bringing Brazil home If you’re of South American descent or, more specifically, from the Brazilian culture, you’re likely aware that there aren’t many options to find Brazilian goods around here, and you’re probably used to traveling to San Francisco or the East Bay to find traditional Brazilian foods. There is something much closer in the Sacramento Valley these days thanks to Odair Da Silva, a.k.a.

Junior, who runs a store appropriately called Brazilian Portuguese Online Grocery Store, located in Elk Grove. The store’s goods are available by appointment only and it’s open every day except Monday. His store, which is licensed and certified by the city and state, is run out of his ultraclean garage and has been doing business since opening in November 2014. He took a few minutes to talk about his store, his transition in moving from Brazil to Elk Grove and the guidance of faith in his life.

Why did you come to Elk Grove, of all the cities in California?

I got invited for a discipleship program called a Master’s Commission for Harvest Church [in Elk Grove]. The school paid for me to come every day and I was attending school for eight hours a day for one-and-ahalf years, starting in 2002. It’s technically a nondenominational church but considers itself an Assembly Of God.

How else has faith impacted your life?

I’ve lived in the United States for 14 years now. Believe it or not, I met my wife at Burger King at Stockton Boulevard. I prayed to get married for many years and one day I was driving to Carl’s Jr. and a voice inside my heart said I should go to Burger King.

When I walked inside, I looked to my left and saw four girls. I was shaking and nervous so I drove immediately home. As luck would have

it, the very next Sunday, [one of those girls] sat in front of me in church. I asked her on a date and then asked her to marry me on the second date. As of May 17, we will celebrate 11 years together. We have have a young boy (9 years old) and a little girl (6 years old).

How do you keep in touch with your Brazilian roots?

I go every five years because of my family’s growth and size. We now have two kids and it costs more to travel. I miss my brother, mom and my dad, but I use FaceTime every day for 20 minutes or more to keep in touch.

What do you like about California and its culture?

There are so many things I love about being here. The mix of people and the different friendships I’ve made here have really made a big difference in my life. I’ve made friends with [people from] many cultures including Mexicans, Haitians, Chinese, Japanese, Africans, Fijians and countless others. I also enjoy all the wonderful styles of food and will eat virtually anything.

You must get lots of repeat customers, since you’re a big people person.

We definitely have lots of repeat customers and the word has been spreading through our website, social media—Facebook has helped me a lot—and, of course, simple word of mouth. At present, I do not cater events or make hot food, but I sell coxinhas [Brazilian chicken croquettes] and many other Brazilian frozen foods that can be prepared at home quickly. Thankfully, my customers that make appointments and travel here from all over the Sacramento Valley and beyond love my stuff. We have customers coming that aren’t Brazilian as well. here since I get some of the best pure acai and caju juice [juice from cashew fruits] from my distributor and can keep the prices affordable. I sell only the freshest foods and am very aware of my customer’s expectations and mine since I have seen many businesses sell expired or near-expired foods.

Was it hard to get the store set up to be a legitimate business?

The process was very easy. You have to ask the city for all the requirements to make sure you’re obeying food-code laws and more. After that, you need to file a handful of paperwork and pay a small annual fee of $150. The city is very thorough and take your fingerprints along with running background checks to make sure people doing business are not criminals.

When do you plan to open the food truck?

Just recently, my dreams of having a food truck were shattered when the Chicagobased company I gave $50,000 went suddenly bankrupt. The company was then sold off and the guy who I trusted disappeared. I have had lawyers look into it but he has gone underground and cannot be found.

There are plans to open a proper brick-andmortar store, correct?

Of course. My plan is to start a new business that is half restaurant and half store. I haven’t got a solid date yet since the plans are still in the works and so is the location. I hope to sell half Brazilian and half Portuguese food fare like octopus and codfish at the restaurant since my grandfather is from Portugal. It will happen.
