Super togetherness I don’t really care about the Super Bowl game scheduled to take place this coming Sunday. Football doesn’t hold much appeal. It’s not you, pigskin, it’s me.

That said, I’ll still tune in to watch the Seattle Seahawks take on the New England Patriots—if only to feel as though I’m a part of something.

Touchdowns and fumbles. Deflategate fallout. Katy Perry. All those milliondollar ads.

After all, the game will likely be the biggest televised event of the year. It usually is. Last year’s Super Bowl, the 43-8 beat down that the Seahawks levied against the Denver Broncos, averaged 111.5 million U.S. viewers.

(Globally, the broadcast earned 167 million viewers.) According to Nielsen Media Research, that made it the most-watched event in U.S. televised history. As in, of all time.

In today’s ever-fractured media landscape, that’s pretty extraordinary. Compare the figures, for example, to the 2013-14 season’s most-watched series, CBS’s The Big Bang Theory, which averaged 23.1 million viewers.

I grew up in a pre-DVR era when people all tuned in at an appointed time to watch a TV show together.

Archaic, I know.

On average, according to Nielsen ratings, nearly 35 million people turned on their sets to watch The Cosby Show during its peak. It was a simpler time (and a more innocent one, obviously)—one without the distractions of countless Tumblrs, a million YouTube channels, live-Tweeting or status updates.

Some day we’ll tell our kids about a time when people shared cultural experiences when they happened, not when they got around to it.

Call it nostalgia, but I look forward to sharing such collective cultural moments, if only once a year. Because, let’s face it, time-shifting the great Janet Jackson Nip Slip of 2004 just wouldn’t have been the same.

It’s only common sense.

California is headed for a decent budget year, the first since the Great Recession kicked in, and it’s a direct result of the tax increases of 2012.

Instead of “killing jobs” and “delaying recovery,” we’ve got people going back to work. There’s also the return of services and programs that help us rebuild what was lost to the biggest bad time most of us can remember.

Let’s compare our situation to Kansas, where Republican Gov. Sam Brownback and the Legislature followed the GOP playbook of cutting taxes on the already-well-to-do. Even The Wall Street Journal has referred to the subsequent slowdown (and gutting of public services) in Kansas as a warning to the rest of us.

So, when President Barack Obama, in his recent State of the Union address, called for Don’t be fooled increasing taxes on the wealthiby those who say est in order to lessen the burden shouldered by those of us who these tax hikes do most of the working in this will hurt the county, it was clearly an idea with some solid backing. middle class.

It’s a good time to remind people that the most prosperous times we’ve known—from the Eisenhower administration through the late ’70s— included tax rates on the wealthiest Americans that were more than double the current rates (and there were fewer loopholes, too).

Let’s also remind people about income inequality. That CEO incomes continue to dwarf those of employees. And that income of this country’s top 1 percent has grown by nearly 200 percent over the past two decades. And also that the median American income continues to decline while the percapita gross-domestic product is on the rise. All this according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans will further grow this economy out of a recession. It will allow us to put money into infrastructure. This creates jobs. Jobs put money into the pockets of people who will spend it. That’s economic stimulus—much more so than allowing capital to pile up in the bank accounts of the ultra-wealthy.

Income inequality remains, alongside institutional racism, one of the major roadblocks to true democracy (note, that’s with a lower-case “d”; it’s not about partisan politics) in the United States.

Bravo to the president for making a move to address it, and ignore the fear-mongering from the indentured servants of the ultra-wealthy—even if they happen to be elected officials. Ω

As you might expect, the 34th annual Capitol March for the Dream on Martin Luther King Jr. Day was different than previous years.

Very different. There were more marchers, to be sure. And many more young black marchers. I expected that.

What I had not expected is how different Martin Luther King’s message sounded to me this year. In the crowd of at least 30,000, someone was playing Dr. King’s recorded speeches. In past years, his words made me reflect on how much we have overcome. This year l his words pointed to the importance of the ongoing

A dog-killing arsonist is now up against a $13,500 reward for information leading to the jackass’ conviction. Good news, bad news time: It’s still legal to pay disabled workers less than minimum wage in certain cases.

California is one of only a handful of states trying to change that, Disability Rights California announced Monday. DRC and the state’s departments of Education, Rehabilitation and Developmental Services will spend the next six months crafting a blueprint to better train and integrate these workers, who are often cognitively or developmentally disabled and segregated in what’s called “sheltered workshops,” DRC states.

Former Fox 40 anchor Sabrina Rodriguez pleaded no contest to misdemeanor shoplifting last week—and then proceeded to plea her innocence during a well-coordinated media blitz.

Old schooled The central city’s preservationist group gets a new look For four decades, the Sacramento Old City Association has been a champion of Sacramento’s architectural character and its historic neighborhoods. And it has been an important force guiding Sacramento’s growth, advocating for more housing and more human-scale development downtown.

In its way, SOCA has helped shape the city as much as any developer has. Midtown Arvin wouldn’t be Midtown without SOCA.

But the “old city” association itself may soon be a thing of the past—sort of—as its members decide whether to rebrand and reorganize SOCA. “To keep this organization going for another 40 years, some changes are going to be necessary,” says SOCA president William Burg. Perhaps not surprisingly for a preservation group, some members aren’t happy with all of the changes.

At its height 20 years ago, SOCA had about 900 members, says Burg. When he became president in 2012 that number was closer to 80.

But now SOCA is growing again, up to about 180 members. And as development in the city rebounds with the economy, SOCA leaders want the organization to be more effective and better suited for today’s political environment.

Some of the proposed changes are symbolic, like the name. Many assume the old-city association is all about Old Sacramento. But the “old city” actually refers to the downtown and Midtown grid, and Burg notes the group is increasingly involved in planning and preservation issues in other parts of town.

The SOCA board is suggesting changing the name to “Preservation Sacramento,” and there’s a new logo proposed as well—a Victorian house in the foreground, a cluster of skyscraper shapes in the background.

But some changes have met more resistance.

In December, SOCA members voted to reject changes to the bylaws that included a controversial provision to take away members’ ability to directly elect the SOCA board of directors.

“Essentially, it took control away from the membership. I found that to be startling and quite undemocratic,” says Jon Marshack, a longtime SOCA member and a member of the City of Sacramento’s Preservation Commission.

That proposal followed advice given by SOCA’s lawyer, who said the current bylaws left it too vulnerable to lawsuits. Worth thinking about when you’re going up against wealthy developers. Burg also says the bylaw changes were intended to help SOCA to respond more quickly when development proposals and other issues pop up.

The proposed bylaw changes were really just a prequel to a bigger discussion going on in SOCA about the group’s overall organization. SOCA is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit,

and has been since the 1970s. That structure is great for doing political advocacy, but it means memberships and donations aren’t tax-deductible. And most modern preservation organizations (if that’s not an oxymoron) are organized as 501(c)(3)s.

That’s getting a bit technical, suffice it to say SOCA has a few structural issues to address, if it’s going to last into the coming decades. And members will meet again on February 8 to start hashing those out. The new name and logo could be voted on that day. The organizational stuff will take longer.

Karen Jacques, a SOCA board member and longtime Sacramento preservation activist, conceded that SOCA members were asked to vote on too many changes last month, with too little discussion. “In hindsight, we got a little ahead of ourselves on a complicated issue.

In its way, SOCA has helped shape the city as much as any developer has.

“But whatever the bylaws finally look like, I think we’re going to be much stronger in the end,” says Jacques.

How much is Sacramento’s streetcar proposal really going to cost? Like every other media outlet in town, SN&R last week said $150 million.

But that’s not really true, noted Craig Powell with the city government watchdog group Eye on Sacramento.

Downtown property owners are being asked to pay for a $30 million share of the $150 million sticker price. The plan is to sell $30 million worth of bonds and then raise downtown property taxes in certain areas in order to pay off the bonds. But because the bonds have to be paid back, with interest over time, the real cost to property owners will be somewhat higher than $30 million down the road.

How much higher? Powell says that $30 million share could be more like $50 million or $70 million by the time it’s paid off. City officials say they can’t hazard a guess because they don’t know what the interest rates they’ll end up with.

Either way, it is true that the streetcar is going to cost somewhat more than is being advertised.

Of course, that’s true of anything that has to be financed and paid off over time—streetcars, arenas, houses, you name it. But the city and streetcar proponents ought to make that clear, and so should we reporters. Ω

TRUST busted After nearly being deported for playing music in his garage, a Sacramento man sues the sheriff A Sacramento man who was arrested, detained and nearly deported last year just for playing music in his garage is now suing by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

Nick Miller Attorneys for Rosemont resident Martin Del Agua filed a lawsuit last week accusing county sheriffs of unwarranted ni ck am@ newsr eview.c om arrest and excessive use of force.

The suit, by national firm Morrison and Foerster and Advancing Justice’s Asian Law Caucus, comes on the heels of last year’s formal complaints against the department and also Sacramento County over Del Agua’s case.

SN&R covered the arrest (see “Broken TRUST” by Nick Miller, SN&R News, June 26, 2014), which occurred on February 7 of 2014. That Friday evening, Del Agua was enjoying music in his garage and playing with his two young children when law enforcement began rapping on his garage door.

Turns out, a neighbor had complained about Del Agua’s music. It also turns out that, according to Del Agua attorney Angela Chan, Del Agua had issues with said neighbor, including a restraining order.

This neighborly fracas is why the Del Agua family had video cameras The attorney inside and outside their home. And accuses the sheriff’s footage from these cameras shows two sheriffs throwing Del Agua department of against a trash can, tossing his cell continuing to ignore phone and finally hauling him away the TRUST Act and to county jail.

The lawsuit was filed last Friday, illegally detaining January 23, because the county had undocumented not resolved Del Agua’s previous complaint, otherwise known as a tort immigrants. claim. (Interestingly, Sheriff Scott Jones had responded to last year’s complaint by conceding that his department’s investigation “revealed substantial evidence to support [Del Agua’s] claim regarding employee misconduct.”) Del Agua is seeking monetary damages, according to his attorney.

Things got worse for Del Agua last year while at downtown’s jail, where he was detained on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold. This was illegal, however, due to a then-new act inked by Gov. Jerry Brown that disallowed ICE holds except in special cases, such as violent or drug-related crimes. Yet Del Agua remained in jail for nearly 72 hours, until volunteer lawyers were able to secure his release on a Sunday evening. If he’d stayed in jail until Monday, the lawyers say he likely would have been deported.

“The sheriff’s department was wrong in violating the TRUST Act,” attorney Angela Chan, with Advancing Justice’s Asian Law Caucus, said this past summer in reference to Del Agua’s case.

Now, Chan is suing the county for damages. She also accuses the sheriff’s department of continuing to ignore the TRUST Act and illegally detaining undocumented immigrants, citing more than a handful of cases from the past year.

Del Agua is undocumented, but has lived in Sacramento going on 15 years. His wife and children are U.S. citizens. Ω 12 | SN&R | 01.29.15

Up in smoke Will a divided marijuana community jeopardize California’s legalization effort?

California marijuana legalization in 2016 looks anything but certain after a major January meeting by where leading activists showed how divided David Downs they remain. The possibility of ending nearly a century of cannabis prohibition within the next 650 or so days has increased factionalism within the reform movement.

In a small hotel banquet room on the waterfront of Oakland’s Jack London Square, luminaries of pot-law reform rehashed grievances and honed new disputes over future initiative language, as well as campaign funding and control.

Contrary to headlines, the political reality is grim: a slim majority supports legalization in a massive state of 38 million people.

Support is weakest among voters over 50, women, ethnic groups and in rural areas.

Legalization lost in 2010 with Proposition 19 and reformers were so divided no measure appeared on ballots in either 2012 or 2014.

Keynote speaker and campaign consultant Bill Zimmerman outlined three ways in which legalization can lose in 2016: if proponents demand too much, divide into opposing factions or draw in heavily funded opposition.

The main friction points will be initiative language, specifically: exactly who will control and profit from a legal market; taxes; protections for medical-marijuana patients and dispensaries; the right to grow at home and how much; and an age limit of 18 versus 21.

“Our belief about what is right has to be put aside in the interest of what is possible,” Zimmerman said. That tactical thinking alienates many hard-core activists.

Assemblyman Bill Quirk made for an auspicious guest at the event. “I am fully in support of legalization,” he said. But Quirk was not hopeful about action on the issue from the California Legislature.

“The Assembly is very conservative, at least on this issue,” he said.

Meanwhile, another failed 2014 bill, by lawmaker Lou Correa, “was basically an antimedical marijuana bill,” he said. “That passed the Senate. And then we could not get the promedical marijuana bill—which had very strict

regulations—out of the Assembly, because the sheriffs and the police chiefs didn’t like it. So I’m not optimistic.”

One parklet reportedly will be in front of bar-restaurant Capital Dime, near L and 18th streets. The other plans to go out front of Blackbird Kitchen & Beer Gallery, on Ninth Street across from Temple Coffee.

The Blackbird parklet plans to go all-out homecoming-float mode: a pirate ship, complete with a sail and a mast topped with a streetlight. Blackbird’s owner told a Fox40 reporter that the parklet will cost upward of $40,000 and work will begin on it in early February. (Nick Miller)

At a meeting with marijuana-legalization reformers earlier this month, major players rehashed past grievances and (still) debated how to move forward in 2016.

Multiple reform groups will try to run this gantlet. History says nearly all of them will fail.

The California Secretary of State’s Office suggests July 7 of this year as the last day to submit a measure to the state attorney general and request an official title and summary. Hitting this deadline is a sign of seriousness. It also means that reform groups have only about 160 days between now and July 7 to draft, poll, and refine the text of what would be a historic law. If reformers fail to fully test their ballot language during the next weeks and months, it’s game over before it even starts.

“It is very soon—that’s part of my concern,” said Dale Sky Jones, chairwoman of ReformCA, a broad coalition that has been growing since Proposition 19 failed in 2010, and includes California NORML and the NAACP. “We want to pass the most ambitious and possible law out there, but one word in the title can mess up everything,” said Jim Gonzalez, political strategist for ReformCA. We get the first real sense of legalizers’ war chest in August, when BEFORE

electronic-campaign finance reports become available for the reporting period of January through June 30 (due

by July 31). Leading groups such as ReformCA, Marijuana Policy Project, Drug Policy Alliance and others must show fundraising momentum to pay for signatures, staff and ads.

“Early money is like yeast—it makes the bread rise,” Jones said. “It is the most important money.”

A winning initiative campaign could cost a half-a-million dollars just to pay for professional signature gatherers (volunteers can’t do it). A campaign would then need another $10 million for full operations and advertising without major opposition. With opposition, the price tag grows to anywhere from $15 million to $20 million. And those are costs that no single reform group can bear.

A well-oiled, on-time campaign should kick off its signature gathering by Labor Day. Campaigns have 180 days from the day Attorney General Kamala Harris issues her title and summary to collect the necessary signatures. Collecting signatures has never been easier, though, said Joe Trippi, veteran campaign manager for

Howard Dean and Jerry Brown, who is also working with ReformCA. The number of valid signatures needed to qualify an initiative is equal to at least 8 percent of the total votes cast for governor in the last gubernatorial election. Luckily for pot-law reformers, the 2014 California election had one of the lowest voter turnouts of all time—the worst since 1978: just 7.3 million—or 42.2 percent of California’s eligible voters—voted. In the 2010 governor’s race, by contrast, 10 million voters cast ballots.

That means activists have to get 585,407 valid signatures for the 2016 election, rather than of hundreds of thousands more. With signatures costing about $1 each to gather, voter apathy in 2014 just made pot legalization several hundred thousand dollars cheaper.

“It’s ridiculous. There’s almost no barrier [to getting onto the ballot],” Trippi said. “I’ve been working in the state since 1975, and I’ve never seen it like this.” Ω

robust concerto blasts through speakers inside chez daniel on a tuesday afternoon. hours before dinner, the traditional french restaurant in folsom already smells like a wonderful combination of garlic, onion and maybe some butter or wine.

“You’re lucky, he’s in a good mood today,” says a tall man exiting the front door with a clipboard, after finishing what appears to have been a business meeting with owner Daniel Pont.

Pont’s known to be very particular about things such as enforcing his dress code and not accepting credit cards on weekends. One recent review of his restaurant called him “notoriously stubborn.”

Pont disappears for a few minutes into the kitchen and then answers a phone call.

Not only is he Chez Daniel’s owner, he’s also the accountant, the dishwasher, the sous

chef, the chef, the general manager, the sommelier and the spokesman.

Finally, he sits down and explains that he’s a little dizzy all of a sudden. It’s the only sign of slowing down that the 77-year-old seems to display at all. He steps back into the kitchen to cut a small piece of baguette.

A bite of bread and sip of sparkling water seem to fix whatever was wrong.

As Pont proves, younger doesn’t necessarily mean better. Inspired by a recent piece in The New York Times Magazine called “Old Masters,” SN&R wanted to find Sacramento athletes,

artists and musicians of an older generation who are all still setting a high bar in their third acts.

We sat down with a handful of people over the age of 60 who are still at the top of their game. Some have spent a lifetime mastering their skills; others have retired and refocused on doing what they love. In other words, it’s a group of people who see age as just a number, who strive to be active and aren’t afraid to learn. More importantly, these five people still have the uncanny ability to inspire us with their stories, wisdom and youthful energy.

Chef of all t ra d es The first thing chef Pont says while seated at a white-cloth-covered table is that he doesn’t want to be called a restaurant owner.

“A restaurant owner and a restaurateur are completely different individuals,” he says. “I am a restaurateur, a man who can do quality control, cook, serve and do the PR all at the same time.”

He’s also a loving grandparent and husband. But, most importantly, he wants everyone who comes in to know that he’s the chef, and he makes a point to come out from the kitchen during dinner and interact with customers.

“You go into a restaurant today and do you know who cooked the food?” he says. “Not just Sacramento, anywhere: Who cooks your food? Why is it important to have a good chef if he doesn’t cook your food?”

He makes a great point. It’s hard to know who’s cooking a particular meal on any given day. But that’s not how things work at Chez Daniel.

Pont grew up in Lyon, France. He was always helping his mom out in the kitchen as a kid, roasting coffee, making bread, cooking eggs. He worked summers at a restaurant and picked up culinary skills.

More importantly, he says, he was learning to be a “customer-oriented person.”

At 19, Pont entered service as a French military correspondent in Canada, but after finishing his service and acquiring a job at a French restaurant in Chicago, he never returned home. Here in the United States, he worked just about every kind of restaurant job before opening his own restaurants in the Bay Area, Sacramento and now Folsom.

Pont works 12-hour days, five days a week, and drives hundreds of miles each week. He’ll start off the day buying fish in Midtown and then head to a grocery store to pick out ingredients. Then, he’ll drive to Folsom to prep, cook, wash, mingle with customers and clean. Finally, he drives home to Sacramento.

It appears that he could go forever at this pace, but he says with some certainty that this will be his last restaurant. “It’s very hard for me because I know that when I close, that’s it,” Pont says. “And it will be painful.”

What keeps him inspired to work so hard every day after about 60 years in the food industry?

“You have to like it. It’s in you, it’s in your blood and under your skin,” he says. “You know it when you come home and your wife says to you, ‘Go and take a shower because you smell like garlic.’”

On the patio of a Midtown coffee shop on a recent weekday, people type away on their laptops and sip coffee. No one expects to hear poetry out of the blue. But that’s what they get, a free bonus.

“Do you want to hear it?” says poet Martha Ann Blackman. “It’s called ‘It Only Took Ten Years.’”

She recites: “It came to her in a wind song / from across the miles.”

Some people look up from their screens and books.

A bit later in the poem: “The woman heard because / she was meant to hear / and to tell, to tell, to tell. And a change was made / a direction moved in the wind song / and it was sweet again. / And it only took 10 years.”

This is part of an autobiographical poem about her 10-year involvement as spokesperson in a grassroots effort to shut down the Rancho Seco nuclear power plant.

Poetry always comes to Blackman from an unknown place, she says, and whether she wants it to or not. “It’s almost like poetry’s given to me and I write it down,” she explains. “It flows when it comes to me that way, and it’s not work.

It’s more like play.”

One thing she began to grow increasingly concerned about in the ’70s was SMUD’s Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station. In 1979, after writing a poem about it, she and a team of antinuclear activists began a 10-year battle to close the power plant. As spokeswoman for Sacramentans for Safe Energy, she put in up to 60 volunteer hours per week.

What made their campaign successful—Sacramento residents voted to close the plant in 1989—was the fact that “we did not attack people, we attacked the problem,” she said.

A year later, she was hired in an administrative role for the California Environmental Protection Agency, where she worked for 14 years. Now retired and in her early 70s, she’s refocused on returning to her first love, poetry, which she’s written and performed continually throughout her life.

“Sometimes a word makes a difference. Sometimes it takes every single touch and every single vote and every single phone call to make something change,” she says. “We forget as human beings that we have a lot of power and we need to be respectful of that power and do good things with it.”

Ball s o ha rd On a recent weekday, Paul Clegg’s putting in dozens of practice shots at a local park. He’s working on perfecting the 3-point shot, but it’s not quite game ready yet. If it’s like the rest of his shots, he’ll keep up this practice session until he can consistently hit half of them. Then he’ll bring the 3-pointer into the basketball league at his downtown gym. Later on, at the end of the season, he’ll review the shooting percentages and make sure they’re satisfactory.

At the gym on a different day, Clegg warms up and stretches his legs. He probably won’t be blowing past defenders like he could when he was one of the best teenage players in Brooklyn. But don’t leave him with an open shot, either, just because he’s 69 years old. He has the ability to shoot, and even embarrass younger players who don’t play defense.

“I’m kind of interested in exploring the limits of what you can do,” says Clegg, who plays basketball three days a week, both at parks and at Capital Athletic Club. It’s hard to know what you’re capable of until you push yourself beyond your limits, he says.

basketball enthusiast and blogger The retired Sacramento Bee copy editor and columnist grew up in New York City playing ball at Braddock Park in Queens. He was the star of his high school team and thought he’d continue to play college ball at Harvard University while earning an English degree, but he dropped it to concentrate on academic pursuits. In the following 50 years or so, he’s had an “on-again, off-again” relationship with the game.

After graduating from Harvard, he moved to the West Coast. “I came west because I thought the revolution

was starting back in 1968 and Berkeley was kind of the place to be and I was a budding activist,” he says.

He wound up with a newspaper job in Red Bluff, and then got a job at the Bee, where he worked for about 30 years.

It wasn’t until 2008, in his early 60s and recovering from hip surgery, that he became more serious about playing basketball regularly again. Seeing a 90-year-old pole vaulter at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Sacramento reinforced the idea that he might as well give it a shot.

So in 2011, he started up again and at the same time started chronicling his new journey in a blog called “Game to 100.”

He writes about “those of us playing basketball after 50, taking on all comers in athletic clubs, rec centers and playgrounds,” he says. It’s also branched out into topics such as the new Kings arena, other sports and ageism.

At this point in his life, Clegg says he’s spent too long in his comfort zone, and now he’s ready to step out of it. He’s trying to enrich other parts of his life, too, by trying new things that used to scare him, like traveling to foreign countries with his wife.

“Don’t sell yourself short,” he says. “I think you’re capable of a lot more things than you realize you can do.”

dance a ll d ay Tina DeVine might start one of her 12-hour-or-longer days at 9 a.m., teaching an 11-year-old dancer, then leading a rehearsal session for a local dance company. Later, she’ll go to the gym, teach more classes for a different group and have another rehearsal. Sometimes rehearsal won’t end until midnight. But it doesn’t seem to faze the 62-year-old dance lover.

It was probably around 20 years ago, while living on a rural Hawaiian island far away from dancing, when she realized how much she really loved it.

“We were living on an outer island, so there was no dance, not even a small studio at the time,” she says. “I just couldn’t read about it, hear about it, because I loved it and when you love something and you have to quit for one reason or another, it’s like you have to hide from it.”

This rural farm experience would also, in a way, help DeVine rekindle her flame with dancing. Ballet dancers generally peak in their early-to-mid 30s because of its physical demands. But she was super fit from farming. Plus, for the 20-year period during which she home-schooled

five kids in Hawaii, she couldn’t even think about dancing, making her realize how much she really missed it.

DeVine showed a lot of promise as a young ballet dancer. Growing up in Michigan, she first started ballet at the age of 4 and became serious about it by the age of 11. When she was a little older, she honed her ballet skills attending professional dance companies’ summer programs. Then, in her late teens, she danced professionally in New York City, Chicago and San Francisco.

In her early 20s, however, she quit dancing altogether and made the jump to Hawaii, where she got married and raised her five kids, who are now all working professionals.

Finally, in her early 40s, after a 22-year break from dance—and years without the comforts of things like hot water and electricity—DeVine decided to move back to California and pursue her old profession.

Re-energized by her decision to dance once again, she branched out, taking jazz dance classes from Kelli Leighton, owner and artistic director of Leighton Dance Project in Folsom, and artistic director of CORE Dance Company. DeVine also returned to ballet, which led to her becoming ballet mistress at CORE a few years ago; and last year she started the role of artistic director of the ballet program of Leighton Dance Project.

“I’ll do it until I drop dead, it’s what I love to do,” she says. “As long as I can move, and students can learn something from me, I’ll keep doing it.”

One of the things that’s kept her going over the years, she says, is just selfdiscipline in all aspects of life.

“Whatever you want to do, or whatever you have an affinity for or love to do, put your hardest effort in, your whole heart into it, because it’s the work ethic that counts, not necessarily what you achieve,” she says. “The work that’s behind it can help you in life no matter what you end up doing.”

T h e e pi c Teacher When retired teacher Kathryn Hohlwein explains the effect that poetry has on kids, she starts to tear up at the sound of her own words.

“It hooks them. They don’t forget it,” she says. “It’s not my doing, it’s just that the poems are wonderful.”

The particular poems she’s describing are the epic poems of Homer: The Iliad and The Odyssey. And Homer’s not just any poet in her heart.

According to Hohlwein, the Bible, and the works of Shakespeare and Homer are three of the most influential writings in history of western civilization. But there were plenty of people teaching the first two already, so she spent more than three decades teaching the third, she says. Now that she’s retired, her nonprofit group The Readers of Homer continues to present the text to a new generation of learners and hardcore classicists alike.

Hohlwein was born in Utah, but came to Sacramento after studying on the East Coast, in Europe and in the Middle East. She married an art professor, and the two found jobs at Sacramento State University in the late ’60s. There, she taught Homer’s two most famous works until retiring in 1996.

Homer transcended the politics of his day, and is still relevant, says Hohlwein.

Moreover, he understood the complicated emotions that war, and coming home from war, involves.

“I think the Homer lesson above all is the fabulous impartiality of his work: Do we love the Trojans or do we love the Greeks; or do we love the Trojans and hate the Greeks?” she says. “Yes, he’s Greek and yet he’s writing about people in a foreign country, the defenseless, the occupied and the destroyed. It touches something very real and deep in all of us, whether we know it or not.”

By the time Hohlwein retired in 1996, she’d built a contingent of loyal students who loved the class, and she also wanted stay connected to the works. Someone pitched her the idea to create a nonprofit called The Readers of Homer. So in 1998, the group launched with an audienceparticipation reading of one of Homer’s epic works in Sacramento—straight through from beginning to end.

It was a hit, and the group hit the road, hosting hours-long readings nationally and internationally in Los Angeles, New York, Uruguay, Egypt and Greece. At readings, audience members split up the text, and take turns reading passages. It’s this audience-participation and spectacle of the readings—which often include foreign languages, music and food—that inspire young people and non-poetry lovers to enjoy it for the first time.

“The success has everything to do with the fact that the audience reads,” says Hohlwein. “People just love it at any age, any kind of person, poetry lover or plumber who doesn’t like poetry. It teaches itself.”

City of trees Brass Band gives saCramento kids a neW orleans-styled urBan musiCal Core

W

hen faced with choosing between a nightclub or a street corner, the members of the City of Trees Brass Band will gladly take the open-air venue.

It’s in the spirit of New Orleans, where live music literally floats through the air at all hours of the day.

In Sacramento, you might spot them marching by the MARRS Building or on K Street, tooting their horns and screaming the words to “When the Saints Go Marching In.” In San Francisco, where a troupe of eight musicians playing second-line jazz on the streets might be a little less shocking, the band heightens the performance.

Trombonist Josh Cambridge, for example, started hiding in the crowds in the middle of songs—only to reappear during an epic

call-and-response bit between him and the rest of the band. Then he started running down BART escalators—in the opposite direction—to resurface above ground at just the right moment.

Cambridge laughs about it. Bandleader Ben Hillier spills out compliments.

“I don’t know how he does it,” he says.

“It’s the kind of showmanship you can’t even do in a club—you need resourcefulness and a city.”

Even though the band—a shifting collective of sorts, with about eight core members right now—constantly celebrates New Orleans, few members have actually been there before. Instead, the city represents an ideal, an ethos.

“The culture—people literally waking up and going on the streets and playing—you don’t see that in any other city,” says Cambridge, who visited for a couple of weeks while playing in the United States Marine Band years ago.

So the City of Trees Brass Band plays the streets—one form of spreading the gospel. The other is exposing the next generation of brass players to the style.

Starting in February, the band is launching its first Educational Outreach Campaign. Every month for six months, it’ll hit a new destination and host free clinics at school band classes. February is dedicated to visiting Sacramento-area schools, but later on, City of Trees will head to Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo, Portland, Eugene and more.

These clinics aren’t entirely new. The band’s first took place at Dyer-Kelly Elementary last April. In the fall, City of Trees took its instruments to El Camino High School and Arcade Middle School.

“We’re trying to get kids to play music outside of the classroom, because we think that’s the first step in getting kids to stick with music the rest of their lives,” Hillier says. “The ultimate takeaway is that music is fun, and you can do it—you just need to pick up your horn.”

How does Hillier convey that sentiment?

By performing for the kids—and clearly having fun while doing it.

And City of Trees knows its audience.

At Arcade, the band performed a song from Super Mario 64, “Prince Ali” from the

Disney movie Aladdin and “Get Lucky”

by Daft Punk—the latter all jazzed up and funkified. And to be extra kid-friendly, bandmates shouted “puppies” instead of the potentially inappropriate phrase “get lucky.”

With jokes, self-deprecation and moments for crowd participation sprinkled in, the students were clearly digging class.

El Camino High School band teacher Kevin Glaser says his students, too, received the message.

“I often bring older people to speak at my classes,” Glaser says. “The kids can’t really imagine themselves at that age—they don’t get the big picture. But these musicians were so young, and they could see how good they were already. It was inspiring.”

The youngest member of City of Trees is 21-year-old saxophonist Isaac Negrete. The oldest is 51-year-old saxophonist Bill Bua. It’s quite the range—but most members are in their twenties and met while studying at American River College in 2011.

At the Crest Theatre last Thursday night, there to see

Jeff Bridges and his band, the Abiders, it’s the first thing I notice. And I’m clearly not alone. Countless attendees make their way through the front entrance and head straight to the recessed space across from the concessions stand—the old standby watering hole for events like these. But the well is dry, at least for now.

An employee scooping popcorn tells me they’re still in the process of obtaining permits under the new management.

It’s not the first faux pas under the Crest’s new setup.

In November, the first very concert scheduled after the changeover was canceled, tickets refunded. And just before the holidays, the theater was shut down temporarily after county health inspectors found rat feces in the vicinity of the snack bar. And now, a sober night of

country-rock?

New Orleans influences. While still keeping a funky, West Coast flair, they opted for a name change—something more traditional, but still reflective of their California roots. In summer of 2013, City of Trees Brass Band was officially born.

Funny—but not surprising—is that every member of the band is classically trained. Their stories are similar in general—picking up different instruments in elementary school before landing on the clear winner by junior high. Cambridge says he started too late to become truly great—he settled on trombone in eighth grade.

“When I think of a musician, I think of them as Jedis. You gotta start them out nice and young, train them up,” he says.

“And when they get older, they realize, ‘Oh, I wanna do this,’ then you get people like Anakin Skywalker. A little bit older, but they still learn the Force, which is what we’re all here to do.”

In this metaphor, part of learning the Force is playing by ear. City of Trees members all started off reading music, but channeling New Orleans means going BEFORE

The love is flowing, man.

Ben Hillier bandleader, City of Trees Brass Band off the page. Learning a piece of music used to take a month or longer, but now, Cambridge says it can be done within one rehearsal.

Their rapid progress has inspired the brass players to think big, and fast.

On top of the upcoming Educational Outreach Campaign, Hillier wants to start fixing up old instruments and giving them to students for free.

Bua is a saxophone technician, and Cambridge will enroll in an instrument repair program in Washington this fall.

“Almost all of the students we’ve found play flute or clarinet and want to learn the alto sax or trombone,” Hillier says. “They want to pick up the instrument but they can’t.”

I’m waiting for water in a line like I’ve never seen when the crowd begins to cheer, and a familiar voice comes over the sound system: “Alright, yeah, man!”

Bridges and band take to the stage, and his aura is catching. He’s just as laid back as you would expect. A calm washes over the crowd as though the Dude himself had sparked a J and puff-puff-passed it to the whole of the audience. In an instant, the bar goof is forgiven.

He explains this stop as the beginning of a short, threecity “I Don’t Know” tour, and encourages the crowd to revel in the “openness and space that not knowing creates.”

When he shatters his water glass two songs in, that same “fuck it” attitude comes through, and it’s brilliant.

The band plays a blend of tracks from Bridges’ own discography, and from Crazy Heart and The Big Lebowski.

There’s twang, there’s folk, there are some fully psychedelic moments.

Their sound is an incredible blend of crisp and loose, like watching a jam session for the world’s most on-point and polished band.

But I’m almost convinced it’s the hush between the songs that prove the band’s hold over the audience best. More than once, Bridges and Co. stop to tune a guitar, to tweak this or that, as you do—in total silence, for what most would consider an uncomfortable amount of time. No small talk, no bullshit.

And only the first time do you get nervous laughter from the seats.

And OK, yeah, some jerks screaming for “Freebird” and the Eagles once or twice. But for the most part, we own it.

Good vibes and gratitude abound. More than once the group acknowledges one another, their sound man, their tour manager, their roadies. Bridges thanks Abider and musical director Chris Pelonis, Pelonis thanks Bridges, Bridges thanks Crazy Heart collaborator and music producer T Bone Burnett. He thanks fourth-grade pal Johnny Goodwin. The love is flowing, man.

Bridges and the Abiders finish their set with a string of favorites, including Crazy Heart’s “Somebody Else” and Bob Dylan’s “The Man in Me,” bringing up the house lights just enough for the crowd to dance at the stage. It’s a feel-good ending to a damn good-feeling night.

And so, the Dude abides. Does this mark the turnaround point for Crest 2.0?

Think I’ll hang back for a while before making that call— in the openness and space that not knowing creates.

That said, Sacramento gigs are likely to become less frequent—probably one every other month. In addition to focusing on education, the band is gearing up to release its debut album in April.

Expect an eclectic mix of New Orleans standards, arrangements of video game soundtracks and pop songs with a hiphop, funky flavor.

et’s be real here: A large part of Sacramento is gentrifying. The downtown area in particular has what I call a growing “douche economy”—I’m talking about clubs and lounges with expensive cover charges, VIP rooms and bottle services that appeal to rich douches. I’m afraid it won’t be long before the “cowtown” character we’ve loved to hate for so long makes way for hipsters shopping at Whole Foods and watching indie-rock superstars at the future arena. This week however, there’s still plenty of cowntown-ish stuff happening— literally stuff that Americana-loving cowboys would hella like.

For example, let’s start with the current arena, Sleep Train Arena (even though it’s still Arco Arena to us), where the Professional Bull Riders’ Built Ford Tough Series visits from Friday, January 30, through Saturday, January 31. This competition brings with it the top 35 professional bull riders in the world trying to ride bucking bulls for eight seconds. But first—no joke—it begins with “pyrotechnics, explosions and flames.” Friday, it starts at 8 p.m. and Saturday, at 6:50 p.m.

Tickets are $17.50-$102.50 and Sleep Train Arena (www.sleeptrainarena.com) is located at 1 Sports Parkway.

Speaking of the arena, country fans can return on Wednesday, February 4, to see superstar singer-songwriter Eric Church with opener Halestorm. The chart-topping country star is known for his aviator sunglasses and badass persona as well as his rock-influenced sound and support for medicinal marijuana. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets cost $31.38-$67.60.

There’s other cool country-esque stuff to catch elsewhere, too. An exhibit called See That Lonesome Whistle Blow at the California State Railroad Museum (www.csrmf.org) closes Saturday. It’s a wide variety of train-themed collectibles that were once popular in American culture. The museum, located at 125 I Street, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and tickets are $5-$10.

Lastly, an interesting reading event happens on Wednesday, February 4, that a straight-talking cowboy might like to attend. At 7 p.m., a group called the Straight Talk Story Tellers will host a storytelling event at Belle Cooledge Library, 5600 South Land Park Drive. The theme is “Anything Goes,” but there’s no reading allowed; the stories must all be memorized. It’s free and open to adults and high-schoolers.

Better than frozen ChiCken flAutAS, ChAndo’S tACoS Frozen taquitos were a college 3 a.m. mainstay.

I’m not embarrassed. At least I don’t think I am. I honestly can’t remember how they taste exactly— other than salty, meaty, crispy goodness. But the chicken flautas at Chando’s Tacos—added to the menu board a couple of months ago—satisfy the same cravings while also being real food. Three tubes of fried tortilla—rolled around sweet, juicy chicken—rest under shredded lettuce, jack cheese, sour cream and hot sauce. Plus guacamole. For less than $5. Each bite is a crunchy, surprisingly light, gooey treat. Enjoy drunk or sober—you’ll still feel perfectly human afterward. Chando’s Tacos, multiple locations, www.chandostacos.com.

Like the Belgians do the St. Arnold Ale, Monk’S CellAr There’s a relatively new Roseville place called Monk’s Cellar, which opened in October and serves mainly Belgian-styled brews. The spot has a full restaurant, bar and its own brewery from which one can try seven brewed-in-house beers for $10.50. Brewmasters Peter York and Andy Klein have loads of experience in the local scene: Sacramento Brewing Company, Lodi Beer Company and Sacramento Brewing Services are on their collective resume. The quadrupel here is called the St. Arnold Ale, and it’s nearly as rich in flavor as some quads from Belgium. Microwaved dining: For the frenzied, busy bee with no time to cook—or maybe just no willpower—Fit Eats has been a life-changing local business. At least according to the Yelp reviews.

Fit Eats is a two-year-old meal delivery service, focusing on high nutritional value and appropriately sized portions. Folks go online, place an order and find ready-to-heat meals magically on their doorstep the next morning.

Now, CEO Don Arnold is getting ready for his first brick-and-mortar spot, set to open at the end of February. It’ll live in the same development as University of Beer and soon-to-open chains Togo’s and Noodles & Company at 16th and O streets.

with about 25 to 30 prepackaged meal options to choose from. The menu will change every week and boast gluten-free, vegan and paleo offerings. Lengthy labels include ingredients, nutritional information and instructions for optimal re-heating.

Think three-bean chili with ground turkey for dinner, a tempeh burrito for lunch and gluten-free blueberry pancakes packed with whey protein for breakfast—all priced at $8 to $10.

“A lot of people order a lot of food at once for deliveries,” Arnold said. “This way, people can just come in and buy one or two meals.”

Microwaves and tables will be available to those who want to eat on-the-spot. As far as beverages go, don’t expect much beyond water, bottled cold-pressed juice and maybe coffee.

Asian-American flair: When Josh Gold and Kevin Lee were friends in high school, they’d often talk dream careers. The No. 1 common one? To own a food truck.

After some time cooking in the Broderick kitchen, the pair is ready to unveil Dojo Burger, a truck boasting “classic American food with an Asian twist,” Gold said.

Dojo Burger draws from different regional cuisines—there’s already an eclectic mix with a kimchi burger, Thai chicken curry sandwich and pulled pork sammie with “Vietnamese BBQ sauce.”

And in the future, Gold hopes to add a beverage program—think upscale sodas—and desserts, such as lemongrass-coconut cookies and burnt caramel-ginger cheesecake.

The signature Dojo Burger—loaded with bacon, pickled ginger, radishes, fried onion strings and ginger aioli—is the priciest item at $11. The cheapest, a side of fries, goes for $2.

A better snack Celery ViCtor Struggling to keep those resolutions? Pick up some celery, which is at its best in cool weather. It’s full of fiber, but can sometimes be bland. Instead of smearing it with peanut butter and raisins for that kindergarten favorite, ants on a log, try using celery in other ways. Look for crisp green stalks with sprightly leaves and slice the large outer ribs to make a San Francisco classic called Celery Victor, in which you serve braised, cold celery with a tarragon vinaigrette. Save the tender inner stalks and leaves to add crunch to future chicken salad or vegetable soup.

Part of my personal ethical dilemma with the growing foodie culture in the United States pertains to values. It seems that fetishizing the consumption of good food is the ultimate way to achieve any sort of foodie credibility— creating a value system that largely ignores problems with farm labor. Yes, I enjoy eating and judging foodstuffs as much as the next foodie. But it’s also important to talk about our nation’s food supply chain, which is fraught with human rights violations, according to the makers of the documentary Food Chains.

A free screening of the 2014 film (6 p.m. on Thursday, January 29, at Bayside Church of South Sacramento, 6524 44th Street), is organized by Opening Doors Inc., a local nonprofit dedicated to empowering underserved Sacramento communities. Food Chains primarily focuses on the story of the Fair Food Program, created by a group called the Coalition of Immokalee Workers in an attempt end human rights violations in the tomato fields in Florida. Ideation Ideation: noun, the process of brainstorming, or the formation of ideas or concepts.

It seems wrong that a drama about finding by Jim Carnes a way to deal with the possible extinction of half the world’s population can be as hilarious as playwright Aaron Loeb’s Ideation, now playing at Capital Stage. But it is uproariously funny at times (skewering corporate culture and “bizspeak,” for example) and horrifyingly frightening when it puts seemingly sane minds to work on an insane project. Can anyone divorce himself from specifics enough to justify “theoretical” action?

55 Songs Local comedian, PBS host and storyteller extraordinaire Jack Gallagher presents his sixth one-man show, this time tapping into his love of music as a muse to memories. 5 Songs is yet another partnership between Gallagher and B Street Theatre, which has commissioned and launched his previous self-reflective shows—and it’s a winning formula.

Gallagher has a unique ability to draw you into his intimate personal anecdotes which range from sweet and melancholic to funny and revealing. Even when he’s recalling painful, bittersweet memories, Gallagher’s stories are meandering and endearing, like sitting in a pub with a friend. For anyone who has seen his other one-man shows, they know this is not edgy or topical humor—it’s beer sentimentality, not Fireball Whisky rants.

In 5 Songs, Gallagher lets the audience pick four out of nine preselected songs that trigger tales about his childhood, fatherhood and his lifelong comedic career. At a recent show, the audience-selected songs included “Danny Boy,” “Homeward Bound,” “Poetry Man,” “What Does It Take” and “Earthbound”—each launches stories not based on the lyrics, but rather what memories the particular song evoked as soundtracks to Jack’s life.

The show the audience sees depends on the songs they select. After arranging the songs on a board, Jack nods to backup guitarist Tommy Dunbar, who provides the intro music, background melody and occasional sound effects.

And when Jack hears the first strains of the song, he jumps in his way-back memory machine and grabs us along for the ride.

The man in the fish mask.

The masked marvel Michael Cooper creates sculptures and masks that seem to carry in them a sense of childlike wonder and humor, while also being a bit on the surreal side. His “Giant” mask, for instance, has exaggerated features, though the stretched-out chin is both funny and a little unsettlingly offbeat. In addition to his visual work, he puts on a unique one-man show. It’s partly spoken word, part storytelling and part mime, but he makes use of his masks as well, and even has a little audience participation in the mix. His stories and performances combine mythical, fantasy elements, yet are autobiographical. He describes the whole experience as “moving sculpture.” Cooper has been at it for almost 30 years now, and continually strives to create a unique and vibrant show every time. Alpha ideator Brock (Jason Kuykendall in the best business suit ever), dependable family man and civil engineer Ted (Peter Mohrmann), and industrial engineer Sandeep (Jimmy Sidhu) breeze into the crisp corporate meeting room fresh from a job in Greece and ready for the next project. Joining them are Hanna (Carrie Paff), the only woman in the corporate hierarchy, there to keep the men on track, and her young, doofus assistant Scooter (Russell Dow), who was forced upon her by J.D., the company CEO (voiced by Patrick Murphy).

As ideas flow, personal secrets, fears, selfinterests and questions arise. Words turn back on themselves. Fights break out. Loyalties are questioned and paranoia spreads around the room like a virus.

Michael Stevenson directs this play with clocklike precision. He has to, since it takes place in real time. The consultants have only 90 minutes to prepare their initial presentation, and

Love Letters

This version of the Caryl Churchill play about colonialism and sexual repression gets a first-rate production as Big Idea Theatre lives up to its name. Directed by Janis Stevens, the ensemble (Jerry Kennedy, Benjamin T. Ismail, Clay Kirkwood, Elizabeth Holzman, Ruby Sketchley, Gina Harrower, Linda Moltalvo and Eason Donner) couldn’t possibly be any more perfectly cast. Don’t miss this one; you’ll regret it. Considering that the film as a whole is fairly humorless, the funniest aspect of writer-director J.C. Chandor’s period drama A Most Violent Year might be that by Daniel Barnes killer title. To be sure, the film takes place in New York City in 1981, a pre-Giuliani time of astronomic crime and murder rates, but the title tees up expectations of intensity and catharsis that Chandor has no intention of swinging at. Cinematically speaking, Chandor keeps a tight strike zone, and the measured, confident, almost chilly tone that permeates A Most Violent Year might be largely responsible for the cold

shoulder it’s received throughout the awards season. But separated from all the false hype, Chandor’s film feels smarter and slyer and more carefully crafted than a lot of the obsequious crap (e.g., The Imitation Game) that actually received award nominations.

Chandor’s film is a slow burner, and for much of the running time, the most palpable “tension” is derived from the fear that Oscar Isaac’s heating oil magnate will somehow smudge his camel hair coat. A Most Violent Year shares some stylistic DNA with Scorsese’s Goodfellas, but Chandor’s film inherited very little of that 1990 classic’s energetic temperament. Goodfellas is about a man who “always wanted to be a gangster,” while A Most Violent Year is about a man who wants to walk like a gangster, talk like a gangster and dress like a gangster, without actually being a gangster.

A Most Violent Year is also about the need to confound expectations and subvert appearances, about what Chandor sees as a uniquely American impulse to rule a corrupt world while remaining clean and detached, to simultaneously blend in and stand out. That detachment is present in A Most Violent Year from its opening images, as Isaac’s immigrant-made-good Abel Morales (“able morals,” get it? Chandor’s screenplay, while impressive in its scope and originality, is unfortunately replete with such remnants of film school juvenilia) jogs through his affluent

suburban neighborhood, listening to the Marvin Gaye ghetto anthem “Inner City Blues” on his Walkman.

Chandor intercuts between this morning ritual and the theft of one of Abel’s trucks at a toll booth, an incident that leaves the driver Julian (Elyes Gabel) physically beaten and emotionally shaken. The truck robberies, perpetrated for the $6,000 worth of oil that they contain, have become a regular occurrence for Abel’s company. Although the union rep pressures him to arm his defenseless drivers, Abel resists courting legal scrutiny as he nears closure on a costly but potentially fortune-changing business deal. Abel’s attempts to remain clean are further thwarted first by the threat of legal investigation from a morally flexible district attorney (David Oyelowo), and then by a second robbery attempt that turns the firearm-toting Julian into a fugitive from the law.

That robbery sequence, with its frequently shifting motivations and antagonists, is a brilliant subversion of our expectations, and emblematic of the way that Chandor refuses to be seduced by appearances. The scene begins with a familiar dynamic, but that dynamic completely flips when the gunfire starts, and re-shifts again when the cops show up. It’s a masterfully constructed scene, showing off Bradford Young’s lushly subdued cinematography and the spare score

by Alex Ebert, and the dissociative effect feels right for a 1980s-set film that eschews indulgent pop nostalgia. Aside from Jessica Chastain’s Pfeiffer-in-Scarface-inspired wardrobe and the odd wood-paneled station wagon, there is little to mark this as an “early 1980s” period film.

Chandor’s film feels smarter and slyer and more carefully crafted than a lot of the obsequious crap that actually received award nominations.

Of course, that’s because Chandor is really telling a story about our times, about the sort of Teflon morality that enables the more vicious aspects of modern American consumerism to flourish. It is very self-consciously a film about the American dream, and although brilliantly played by Isaac, Abel is fond of such borderline risible, pregnant-withsignificance pronouncements as “I like to own the things I use.” But aside from the overly on-the-nose dialogue, in telling this story of a compromised and cornered man who tries to take “the most right path,” Chandor takes most of the most right ones. American Sniper

The last public image that most people have of octogenarian actor/filmmaker Clint Eastwood is him at the 2012 GOP convention, losing an argument with an empty chair.

There was good reason to fear the worst with his adaptation of the Chris Kyle biography American Sniper, so what a surprise that rather than an uncritical testament to the might of the armed forces (Heartbreak Ridge 2, say), Eastwood delivers this complex, conflicted and profoundly moving look at the military machine, and the toll it takes on the soldiers who keep getting shoveled back into the fire.

American Sniper possesses the sweep and scope of Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter, but very little of that movie’s romantic grandeur.

Eastwood is after something smaller and more personal—while Cimino turned the Vietnam War experience into myth, here Eastwood undermines the legend of a contemporary American warrior even as he is creating it. D.B.

Black Sea

Recently laid off and seething with resentment, a specialist in underwater salvage (Jude Law) is hired by a mysterious backer to captain a dilapidated Soviet-era submarine on a mission to retrieve a fortune in gold from a sunken Nazi sub in the Black Sea. En route he struggles to maintain order and discipline among a motley crew of British and Russian down-and-outers. Director Kevin Macdonald and writer Dennis Kelly craft a relentless, claustrophobic nail-biting thriller, as Murphy’s law kicks in and almost everything goes wrong.

Macdonald and Kelly rashly invite comparison with Henri-Georges Clouzot’s great The Wages of Fear—and incredibly, they pull it off. The tension is nonstop and all but unbearable, marred only by the presence of frequently unintelligible accents, both British and Russian. J.L.

Blackhat

A computer whiz (Chris Hemsworth) is sprung from prison to join his old MIT roommate, now a Chinese security officer (Leehom Wang), in tracking down a mysterious hacker who simultaneously causes trouble at a Chinese nuclear plant and on Wall Street. Who is this “blackhat” and what is he up to? From this cybercrime premise, Morgan Davis Foehl’s script quickly devolves into a rehash of clichés from blockbuster franchises from James Bond to Mission: Impossible, with gunplay proving more reliably sexy than techies hunched over their keyboards. Fortunately, director Michael Mann invests this folderol with his customary urgency and visual panache; never let it be said that he doesn’t know how to hold our attention. Hemsworth deftly nominates himself to become the next Bond when Daniel Craig’s had enough. J.L.

The Boy Next Door

A high-school teacher (Jennifer Lopez), estranged from her cheating husband (John Corbett), has a one-night stand with her hunk neighbor (Sacramento native Ryan Guzman), a new transfer student at the school where she works; serious stalking ensues.

Written by the inexperienced Barbara Curry, this gender-switch on Fatal Attraction abandons logic early, lunging from borderline softcore porn to flailing over-the-top melodrama and unintentional self-parody well before the halfway point in its modest 91-minute running time. Lopez, carefully photographed, looks as hot as ever, although she exercises her producer’s prerogative by leaving the heavy lifting in the nudity department to the lesser-known Lexi Atkins as a local girl seduced by Guzman (who looks older than his character’s 19 years).

Cake

Film festivals seem to squeeze out facile explorations of grief and depression by the dozen every year, and the Jennifer Aniston vehicle Cake is almost as tedious as last year’s The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. The only reason Daniel Barnz’s movie-like substance is even playing in theaters instead of debuting on VOD (or nowhere) is a mercenary PR campaign designed to capitalize on a “weak” Best Actress crowd and get Aniston some face time on awards telecasts. It worked, to the extent that Aniston received token Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations for her performance, but now we’re stuck with this lightweight, forgettable slice of misery porn. Aniston does solid but indistinct work as Claire Bennett, a prickly accident survivor nursing chronic pain and protecting any number of big secrets. Cake is a so-so Lifetime special and a pretty lousy film. D.B.

Mr. Turner

Gauche and hoary biopic conventions exist for the sole purpose of simplifying a person’s life and personality into a streamlined narrative and an inspirational, one-sentence tagline. In his biopic of the successful 19thcentury painter J.M.W. Turner, writer-director Mike Leigh takes a completely different approach, embracing his subject’s myriad contradictions and often inexplicable behavior as essential to his life and art. Timothy Spall gives a career-defining performance as Turner, turning the slovenly and secretive artist into a Victorian-era version of the Beast, a combustible mix of proper manners and guttural selfishness, with a teeming inner life of desire and denial, sensitivity and self-loathing, curiosity and contempt. Leigh and his Oscarnominated cinematographer Dick Pope beautifully recreate the fog-smeared landscapes and hazy colors of Turner’s paintings, and the effect is like watching J.M.W. Turner stomp and growl and sketch his way through the contours of his own imagination. D.B.

Mortdecai

During World War II, the eccentric, socially challenged math genius Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) leads a British cryptography unit charged with cracking Nazi Germany’s Enigma code, a hitherto unbreakable cipher that has defied all efforts to unravel it. Graham Moore’s script takes a few liberties with history, and his multiple-flashback structure is a bit awkward at times, but director Morten Tyldum smooths it all out into an expression of Turing’s psychological complexity. Cumberbatch’s masterful performance towers over the picture, but he has plenty of sturdy support—Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode and Allen Leech as co-workers, Charles Dance and Mark Strong as higher-ups, and (most especially) Alex Lawther as the teenage Turing, in a performance that complements and enriches Cumberbatch’s own. An effete English lord (Johnny Depp) dabbles in the art black market, especially now that he and his wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) are millions of pounds in debt, so he’s the natural one to turn to investigate the theft of a priceless Goya. Meanwhile, his police-contact frenemy (Ewan McGregor) lusts after his wife, who has her own agenda. Directed by David Koepp and adapted by Eric Aronson from Kyril Bonfiglioli’s cult novel Don’t Point That Thing at Me, this mannered spoof of art-heist caper comedies is one layer of spoof too many, as precious and simpering as its antihero (where does Depp come up with these accents?). It’s like a Saturday Night Live skit that runs on too long. Still, it’s fitfully funny, and the actors (including Paul Bettany, Olivia Munn and Jeff Goldblum) are clearly having a good time. J.L.

A rare specimen of intelligent bear from “darkest Peru” (voice by Ben Whishaw) emigrates to London, where he is taken in by an English family—to the delight of the mother (Sally Hawkins) and son (Samuel Joslin), and the exasperation of the father (Hugh Bonneville) and daughter (Madeleine Harris). Soon, our furry hero attracts the attention of a cold-hearted scientist with a penchant for taxidermy (Nicole Kidman). Writer-director Paul King preserves the charm and sweetness of Michael Bond’s children’s books, while adding a feature-length plot and an opportunity for Kidman to trot out a serving of delicious, lip-smacking villainy. The movie is an irresistible charmer, endearing, family-friendly and hilariously funny. The DVD is sure to sell millions of copies. J.L.

A CRACKING ADVENTURE WITH GUT-KNOTTING SUSPENSE.”

A fairy princess (voice by Evan Rachel Wood) swears off love when she catches her self-centered fiancé cheating; meanwhile, in the neighboring Dark Wood, the insect-like Bog King (Alan Cumming) conspires to wipe out love altogether. Directed by multi-Oscar-winning sound designer Gary Rydstrom from a story by George Lucas (that billionaire master of derivative cinema), this animated musical fantasy is a sometimes uneasy mash-up of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Beauty and the Beast and Glee, with a nonstop parade of jukebox song samples (heavily weighted toward ’50s and ’60s pop), all of them quite well sung. The animation, which has a look of Arthur Rackham mixed with Maxfield Parrish, is fluid, visually striking and, for some strange reason, vaguely alarming. All in all, there are far worse family movies. J.L.

There is such a powerful convergence of hot-button topics in Ava DuVernay’s Selma, from civil rights to voting laws to police brutality to street protests to government surveillance, that even some of the film’s strongest proponents are positioning the film as a good-for-you, syllabus-ready obligation.

That’s an affront to the intelligence, cinematic flexibility and emotional satisfaction of this rousing film, which tracks the involvement of Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) in the 1965 voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Oyelowo is fantastic as MLK, a perfect mix of humanity and moral authority, and Carmen Ejogo is fine in the underdeveloped role of Coretta Scott King. Enough famous faces ham it up in bit parts that the film threatens to turn into Ava DuVernay’s Lee Daniels’ The Butler (a snarling Tim Roth as George Wallace is particularly distracting), but Oyelowo keeps it grounded and DuVernay keeps it moving. The Wedding Ringer

A friendless groom-to-be (Josh Gad) desperately turns to a professional best man (Kevin Hart), who runs a lucrative business catering to such losers. It’s an amusing premise, and the movie benefits from the teaming of Hart and Gad (they’re like a millennial version of Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder). But the picture suffers from Jeremy Garelick’s inept direction; he shows no sense of pacing and throws crude sight gags at us like blasts from a pump-action shotgun, obscuring long stretches of dialogue.

Gad and Hart manage several effective moments.

He finished his fourth album The Resistance months ago, but won’t actually release it until spring because it’s lacking a marketable single—something mainstream-friendly, radioready, with a popular nightclub-appropriate beat. He’s turned to collaborators in the Bay Area for help.

Not that he doesn’t care about the music. He absolutely cares about the music.

“I’m going to have my own twist to it, stay true to my roots as a storyteller,” he says. “I’m not just gonna sell out.”

Panasiti needs this hit to build his fanbase, so he can earn the dough required to continue producing albums. And he needs to keep making albums.

“Music has literally saved my life,” he says.

“I grew up—you know, streets, various addiction issues, making a lot of bad decisions—and music literally captivated me.”

Instead of hustling on the streets, Panasiti could hustle in the music business.

“I just focus my time on touring, my company—I’m trying to better myself as a

human being, and I do that through music,” he says.

Hence the name of his clothing company, Music Saved My Life. Currently he sells T-shirts, sweatshirts and hats emblazoned with the mantra on www.musicsavedmylife. bigcartel.com.

“I think Music Saved My Life is a brand a lot of people can identify with,” he says. “And hopefully a lot of people who are in the streets, in the struggle, can look at it as a light.”

It’s also a way for Panasiti to market himself beyond hip-hop and as part of the greater creative community. His tastes are varied, after all. He’s a huge Deftones fan, for example, and grew up influenced by the likes of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails.

And while area rockers may not know who he is—yet—Panasiti is well-connected in the hip-hop realm. The Resistance features a slew of other local artists and producers, including Task1ne, California Bear Gang, DJ Epik and the Drumaddictz.

A few songs are already available online.

A music video for “The Champion,” one of Panasiti’s faves on the record, was actually released a year ago—back when he first thought he’d complete The Resistance and before his self-inflicted pressure to produce another single.

Although Panasiti says many of the album’s songs are political and potentially controversial, “The Champion” is clearly autobiographical.

“It’s a very positive and uplifting song about going through life, and how all you see is negativity and things pulling you down,” he says.

“And how to crawl out of that with hope.”

Still, Panasiti wants to give his fans some sort of physical album after this year-long wait.

On Friday, January 30, he’ll release Another Chapter Closed, an overflow album with 14 tracks he originally recorded for The Resistance that didn’t make the final cut. The party takes place at the Blue Lamp (1400 Alhambra Boulevard) during Grind, a hip-hop showcase of 10 local rappers, including Task1ne, California Bear Gang, the Gatlin and Flossalini.

Make it rain So metal, bro: Battle Hag lets its notes hang heavy on the air like the fake fog they pump out before their set. But only for a few moments— soon enough, they’re back to hammering down a fat, rocky riff with their ponderous doom tones.

The Sacramento band opened last Tuesday night’s show at Press Club, laying the groundwork for Chico’s Shadow Limb and Seattle’s Helms Alee.

I love Battle Hag like I love any Sacramento metal band: passionately, and with an inclination toward automatic praise. But if you’ve seen or heard Battle Hag, you know they’re a good choice if you’re feeling like being crushed by the despair of doom metal without getting your mind numbed by the genre’s tendency to drone into the void.

The audience seemed to enjoy the set as much as I did, but one dude in particular was most definitely more committed. Standing out from the usual plaid-and-beard looks, the guy in the red polo and ball cap took to the front of the stage with a fistful of ones and started dismissively chipping bills at the band, occasionally stepping back to hold his arms out and look kinda angrily at the rest of us.

Never thought I’d see a dude making it rain on a doom band, but so it goes. Bro at the metal show, I salute you.

Ganglians 2.0, they say, but, ya know, kind of.

Tiaras’ self-titled debut—an excellent collection of hooky, newwave-inflected power-pop—dropped this month on local label Mt. St. Mtn. And the band opens for the Dodos on Tuesday, February 10, at Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub.

Tiaras is only the second band for Grubbs and Hoover, but as nearly-30-year-olds, they’re stoked that everyone’s better at their instruments and that “shit comes together quicker” than in their Ganglians days. Grubbs is also ready to no longer be the chief songwriter, which was his position with Ganglians as well as on most of Tiaras’ first tracks. The next album is going to be a full-on, democratic collaboration.

“Part of starting a new band was wanting to sing over other people’s music and ideas,” Grubbs says. “The next record is like a blender. There’s some really cool stuff coming out of it.”

Big news for Autumn Sky fans: The local indie star is recording her first full-length record—a concept album about the female psyche, and in particular, Sky’s psyche.

Sky says she’s exploring her own childhood, her relationship with her dad—who was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease five years ago—as well as past trauma to create a full illustration of the life of a young, modern woman.

“You can easily read 1,000 stories about being a teenage boy, or 1,000 stories on how to be a sexy girl,” she says. “But what about being a 13-year-old girl, told that you’re vulnerable, that you’re different?”

Sky and her band used a method acting-form of songwriting this time around. Sky has been accumulating a file of inspiring images for a year as a starting point, then she tries to become the idea or emotion that surfaces. “All these thoughts come out that are slightly more crazy and slightly more true,” she says.

Musically, expect the band to tread into more adventurous, ambient indie rock—more electronic sounds, bells, xylophone and recorded ambient sounds, for example. There’s no estimated release date yet, so look for updates on Autumn Sky’s Facebook page.

Ex-Ganglians return: When Pitchfork rated Ganglians’ debut album an 8.1 in 2009, the four-piece quickly became one of Sacramento’s most buzzed about indie bands.

But soon after Ganglians’ sophomore effort in 2011, things started to fizzle. The drummer moved to Brooklyn—and as vocalist Ryan Grubbs says, no member of Ganglians would ever be replaced. Instead, the band entered a “permanent hiatus.” It was time to move on anyway.

“I feel like Ganglians was stuck in the endless summer of low-fi ’09,” guitarist Kyle Hoover says. “All that retro shit was super popular and we were kinda doing that without knowing.”

A couple years ago, Grubbs and Hoover teamed up with drummer Antonio Gulaco (Fine Steps), guitarist Adam Finken (Blasted Canyons) and bassist Ryan Hansen in San Francisco to form a more grown-up band, Tiaras. It’s not

Local musician Jason Galbraith knows his way around a saxophone. Since jumping into the Sacramento scene in 2004, he’s JAZZ lent his horn talents to Close To You (a Carpenter’s tribute band), SuperHuey (a Huey Lewis tribute band), as well as improvisational jazz-funk-fusion outfit the Bumptet. But his real heart and soul is in his solo material—or rather the jazz outfit he fronts, the Jason Galbraith Band, which pulls heavily from hard-bop and experimental jazz from the 1960s. His energy really comes out here. Hometown hero Jackie Greene returns as a member of Nashville supergroup Trigger Hippy, which aside from having a clever name, is pretty darn impressive. The fivepiece was founded by drummer Steve Gorman, who is one of the founding members of the Black Crowes and used to play with Jimmy Page back in the day. If your dad grew up in the ’70s listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Band or the Allman Brothers, he’ll for sure dig this supergroup—as will fans of AMERICANA more contemporary bands like the Mother Hips and Blitzen Trapper. 1417 R Street, http://triggerhippy.net.

McClain’s influences include Garrison Keillor (of A Prairie Home Companion), Waylon Jennings, Tommy Smothers, Tommy Emmanuel and Baxter Black. McClain pulls from folk, country, rockabilly, surf, jazz, swing and gospel to create a style he calls “folkabilly.” Joining McClain on this stop of his Tool Belt Tour is Australian singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso Daniel Champagne.

Carl Arana leads the pack as vocalist alongside guitarist Rob Dickson, drummer Jeff Buxbaum and bassist Russ Partanen. Although they were able to squeeze in a last-minute practice slot at Blue Lamp recently, this Sunday is the band’s first official show. The people behind Sol Collective (and the Global Local music festival that happened in Sacramento at the end of last summer) WORLD continue to bring pretty cool world-music acts to town. Los Angeles’ Las Cafeteras play a modern version of Son Jarocho—a guitar-driven Mexican folk genre—blended with hip-hop, soul and maybe a hint of indie-pop sensibility. Most songs are in Spanish and some are in English, but perhaps more importantly, the beats are infectious and universally danceable. Yes, this band is the von Trapps, like the family from The Sound of Music. Only these four von Trapps are the great grandchildren of the Captain and Maria von Trapp. For the past 12 years, these 20-somethings have been carrying on the tradition of touring the world and singing Austrian folk songs, symphonies and their own global-influenced, multilingual pop sound. Now Portland residents, the von Trapps most recently released a colPOP laboration with fellow Portland-based, international pop heroes Pink Martini.

Irma Thomas (pictured) is known as “The soul queen of New Orleans.” Lee Fields has long been called “Little JB.” While neither has achieved the commercial success of contemporaries like Aretha Franklin or R&B/SOUL James Brown, both have wowed worldwide audiences since the ’60s. Thomas continues to be one of the staples of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and Fields killed it at the High Sierra Music Festival a couple of years back. That’s why it’s such a delight that they’ll be combining their soul superpowers in Davis. Is there a group of co-conspirators that prods you to be brave and farseeing? If not, try to whip one up. And if you do have an inspirational crew, brainstorm about some new adventures for all of you to embark on. Scheme and dream about the smart risks and educational thrills you could attempt together. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you especially need the sparkle and rumble that a feisty band of allies can incite.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The

cosmos seems to be granting you a license to be brazenly ambitious. I’m not sure how long this boost will last, so I suggest you capitalize on it while it’s surging.

What achievement have you always felt insufficiently prepared or powerful to accomplish? What person or club or game have you considered to be out of your league? What issue have you feared was beyond your understanding? Rethink your assumptions. At least one of those “impossibilities” may be more possible than usual.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): When I

attended the University of California at Santa Cruz, my smartest friend was Gemini writer Clare Cavanagh. She headed off to Harvard for her graduate studies, and later became a pre-eminent translator of Polish poetry. Her work has been so skillful that Nobel Prize-winning Polish poet Czeslaw Milosz selected her as his authorized biographer. Interviewing Milosz was a tough job, Clare told blogger Cynthia Haven. He was demanding. He insisted that she come up with “questions no one’s asked me yet.” And she did just that, of course. Formulating evocative questions is a Gemini specialty. I invite you to exercise that talent to the hilt in the coming week. It’s prime time for you to celebrate a curiosity festival.

CANCER (June 21-July 22):

“Somewhere someone is traveling furiously toward you,” writes poet John Ashbery, “at incredible speed, traveling day and night, through blizzards and desert heat, across torrents, through narrow passes. But will he know where to find you, recognize you when he sees you, give you the thing he has for you?” This passage might not be literally true, Cancerian.

There may be no special person who is headed your way from a great distance, driven by a rapt intention to offer you a blessing. But I think Ashbery’s scenario is accurate in a metaphorical way. Life is in fact working overtime to bring you gifts and help. Make sure you cooperate!

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In 1768, Britain’s

Royal Society commissioned navigator James Cook to lead a long naval voyage west to Tahiti, where he and his team were supposed to study the planet Venus as it made a rare transit across the face of the sun. But it turned out that task was a prelude. Once the transit was done, Cook opened the sealed orders he had been given before leaving England. They revealed a second, bigger assignment, kept secret until then: to reconnoiter the rumored continent that lay west of Tahiti.

In the coming months, he became the first European to visit the east coast of Australia. I foresee a comparable progression for you, Leo. The task you’ve been working on lately has been a prelude. Soon you’ll receive your “sealed orders” for the next leg of your journey.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): According to

computer security company Symantec, you’re not in major danger of contracting an online virus from a porn website. The risk is much greater when you visit religious websites. Why? They’re often built by inexperienced programmers, and as a result are more susceptible to hackers’ attacks. In the coming weeks, Virgo, there may be a similar principle at work in your life. big, tough assignment for you. Let’s hope you’re up for the challenge. There’s not much wiggle room, I’m afraid. Here it is: You must agree to experience more joy and pleasure. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You may

have never sampled the southeast Asian fruit called durian. It’s controversial.

Some people regard it as the “king of fruits,” and describe its taste as sweet and delicious. Naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace said it was like “a rich custard highly flavored with almonds.” But other people find the durian unlikable, comparing its aroma to turpentine or decaying onions. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Talking will be your art form in the coming week. It’ll be healing and catalytic. You could set personal records for most engaging phone conversations, emails, text messages and face-to-face dialogs. The sheer intensity of your self-expression could intimidate some people, excite others and generate shifts in your social life. Here are a few tips to ensure the best results. the King of the African nation of Swaziland died while dancing. His only son, Sobhuza II, was soon crowned as his successor, despite being just four months old. It took a while for the new king to carry out his duties with aplomb, and he needed major guidance from his grandmother and uncle.

The princess diaries Ashley Reynolds already had designs on becoming a princess, so when the 20-year-old Sacramento State University student was approached by a local character rental company to dress up as an Elsa impersonator at children’s birthday parties, she said yes to the fancy dress. After all, Elsa, the wildly popular character from the wildly popular animated Disney film Frozen, embodies Reynolds’ own take on life: Be independent, be hardworking, be ambitious and forget the typical fairy-book ending. Now, having had a taste of pretend royalty, the nose ring-wearing Rio Linda native explains how she’s got her sights set on climbing the princess ranks at Disneyland.

Certainly, Elsa would approve.

How does one become an Elsa impersonator?

I work for a woman who has her own company, Character Connections. She picked me out of a crowd. I used to work at California Family Fitness and she goes there and she found me and she said, “I have a company that sends princesses out to birthday parties and you’d be perfect. You have the perfect voice, the perfect look.”

My hair back then was white, literally white. I looked just like Elsa.

Your reaction?

Show me your powers. Can you make it snow right now?”

What about the nose ring?

I was like, “Oh my God.” It has always been my dream to do that. I have plans to, after college, to go to Los Angeles to become a Disney princess. I’m doing it.

I flip it up.

Had you done any princessing before?

I’ve only been Elsa. I would be another princess, though. [My boss] said she would use me as Sleeping Beauty as well but I don’t know how much Sleeping Beauty is in demand.

I had gotten offers from people asking, “Would you be Elsa at my friend’s birthday party?” But nothing that really followed through.

Are you a full-time princess now?

No, I work at a restaurant … [and] I study fashion. I initially wanted to be a fashion designer. I [want to] be a visual merchandiser, setting up the displays.

Are you a fan of the film?

Yes, I am obsessed. I was always telling all my friends I’m Elsa. I really love her.

What about her do you connect with?

I really like the movie because it’s all about he power of a woman, That’s why it’s so popular because she doesn’t have a happy ending with a man.

What’s it like going to a kids’ birthday party and showing up as a magical princess?

They all freak out, they all scream, they’re excited, they’re excited to see me. They’ll ask some hard questions that I have to play off. I always get, “Where are your powers? |

(Laughs.) I know ...Yeah.

Perks to being a princess?

I like the attention. It’s an awesome job, you get to sit there and act like a princess. I love working with the kids and making them happy. I do glitter tattoos on them, I dance around.

Downside?

You have to keep a smile all the time and sometimes I just want to lay down or slouch.

too short for Elsa. I believe I can be Alice from Alice in Wonderland or Tinkerbell. I would love to be Alice … I like her personality. She’s younger and fun and very excited all the time. I would be Tinkerbell, but I don’t know how to act like her. She probably doesn’t talk that much.

People often talk about how Frozen promotes female empowerment and feminism.

Thoughts?

I actually feel quite strongly on that. I love the whole female empowerment thing. I have a lot of beliefs about marriage—I don’t even know if I want to get married. I don’t have a boyfriend. I’m very independent—like very “go go go.” I love to keep myself busy with school and work. I’d rather just focus on myself.

Do you consider yourself a feminist?

Sure. I’ve never called myself that … but I don’t know if you need a man in your life, to get married. I don’t know if everyone needs to get married.

Do you think kids get that message of independence from Frozen?

Who else would you like to play if you worked at Disneyland?

Yeah, and I think it’s awesome. It’s totally set up in our society: Go to school, get a job, get married, get a dog, have kids.

Have a path to that family. … I think Elsa and Frozen are awesome in that it sets up a different pathway and a different role model for girls. Ω
