Raise the bottom Four dollars and 25 cents.

That’s what I took home every hour working my first job ever—at a bagel shop, the before-sunrise shift, with metalhead rocker and baker Mark, who used to joke about locking me in the walk-in oven as it roasted bagels. Anyway, $4.25. I was fine with the pay.

But it wasn’t OK. The minimum wage in California is not OK. It’s currently $9 an hour, but is scheduled to bump up to 10 bucks in 2016. Even at that clip, a full-time minimum-wage employee—if you can get 40 hours a week—earns just over $20,000 a year. Basically, a minimumwage employee is working their ass off to live in poverty.

This week’s feature story by Sasha Abramsky (on page 16) looks at movements locally and nationally to increase the minimum to a living wage. Unlike in years past, however, the prospects of a living wage—say, $15—is very real.

At least in some cities. Election results were not final when I wrote this, but voters on the West Coast will likely adopt higher wages this week.

Here in Sacramento, though, there’s zero hope for a wage increase on the horizon.

Meanwhile, the average CEO of America’s top 350 domestic companies earned $24.8 million a year, according to the Economic Policy Institute. That’s more than 510 times the amount of their average worker’s wage. When I got my first job, the nation’s top CEOs earned about 87 times more than their average worker.

Most of you have probably heard these numbers before. This isn’t new stuff. But I wanted to throw them out there, again, because you’re going to hear Chamber of Commerce types and politicians in the coming months say we can’t afford to raise the minimum wage in Sacramento.

Don’t believe it. Let’s raise the bottom.

I make custom baseball bats by hand. I’ve been doing it for the past four years. My grandfather used to make them for the family and now we have our own business making them out of maple, ash and birch. I like it because I love baseball, it lets me be creative and it allows me to pay my rent.

Re “Vote or die!” by Nick Miller (SN&R Feature Story, October 30): Dude you’re a total leftist. How dare you presume to letter of tell uninformed sheep how to vote. No new law is free. No the week new law saves a cent! You need to go back to where you got educated and slap your instructors for turning you into the dilapidated sucker-upper you are. You are, however, right on the strong mayor BS. I don’t know how you managed to let that one slip past.

Maybe it’s the candidates? …

Also, why isn’t California or Sacramento leading the way for better use of technology like other Western states? My polling station at a local elementary school is a joke of lines, outdated machines, people who don’t help (or can’t), and is just a mess. No internet voting, no voting at DMV or other state offices, and just a 1950s approach to voting. You want more people, and more young people, engaged in voting? Go where they are, use the technology they use, and make it easy to vote instead of this jacked up antiquated system we now employ.

Season of rotten garbage Re “Doug Ose and Ami Bera’s despicable attack ads” by Jeff vonKaenel (SN&R Greenlight, October 30): Jeff vonKaenel expressed my feelings, too! I am completely turned off by personal attack ads and vague innuendos of misdeeds or associations. I make my voting decisions based on where the candidates stand on issues. Attack ads distract voters from understanding the decisions that need to be made, and an educated electorate is key for democracy to function effectively. I found it interesting to compare the two candidate’s websites; Ami Bera’s had very little to say on issues, and on Doug Ose’s site, there was a tab to click to get a sense of where he stood on the issues, but it was vague on details.

Pastor Rick Cole reflects on his two weeks living on Sacramento’s streets Most people know that Pastor Rick Cole spent half of last month living homeless. His goal by was to raise $100,000 for the region’s Jeff vonKaenel Winter Sanctuary shelter program, which he achieved, in part because the j effv@ newsr eview.c om media covered Cole’s experience in a high-profile way. But now the Capital Christian Center leader is back home with his family and church, and he’s had time to reflect on this unique life experience. What’s he thinking? SN&R sat down with Cole to talk about his two weeks of homelessness.

How did the idea come about?

I didn’t actually tell anybody about it [right away], because I’m thinking to myself, “That sounds kind of crazy.”

Like I might not be thinking clearly.

What was the response of your congregation?

That first day, there was a feeling like, “Are you kidding?” Kind of a shock, of sorts, but at the same time they also resonated with it. “That’s really out of the box—but we’re with you.”

Did you have any cash when you first hit the streets?

Day one, I left church, came through my office with my credit cards and my keys and walked out the door, walked ... to the light-rail station and I just took what I had in my wallet, which was $60.

Sacramento on $4 a day?

Yeah, for two weeks. That’s about what it equated to.

What did you do that first 24 hours?

The one thing I planned was—since I’m really a novice and never really done this before—was to go to the mission, Union Gospel Mission, because I know what they do there. I’d never been there, but I know what they do there, and there’s safety in a sense.

You mentioned that it was the worst service you’ve ever seen.

They are wonderful people … but the approach was real harsh. [The sermon] was real coming-at-you with, “You got yourself in this mess, and I’m going to tell you some things that you don’t want to hear, but you need to hear them anyway.”

What were you thinking about at 10 p.m. that night, lying in the bunk bed on your first homeless day?

“Why did I decide to do this again?”

I also felt there were so many things—I can’t tell if what I’m feeling is just me, and I don’t know if I can fully relate to how a person would feel if they truly were homeless. I just knew that this is my first day of being not attached to my comforts and conveniences, and I’m out here and it’s pretty raw.

I found the more nights that I was out, the less nervous I became— although I felt like I still needed to guard myself to a degree. It became more of a normal, a new normal. … I actually found there was really a kind of feeling of family among the homeless people.

Tell me about where you slept most nights.

We went down an alley and found there’s an abandoned building, and behind it was a wooden fence that kind of closed in a real small courtyard in the back of this abandoned building.

The wooden fence had a couple of loose slats, and we got inside and found that someone had lived in there, but it didn’t appear that they were there now.

There were clothes that had been left there. There was paraphernalia that was not good stuff. … That night I woke up a number of times, because there were people walking up and down the alley at 2 a.m. in the morning, diving through the Dumpster. You wake up. It startled me. You’re not sure if they are going to see where you are. What are they doing? And then they would pass.

You visited the river as well?

That night at the river, a couple of the people with me didn’t sleep well, because there were people walking by us. We were probably 5 feet from the river’s edge, and there were people walking between us and the river several times that night. There was a couple of guys that were with me that said they were concerned a couple of times. There were a couple of guys that looked a little tweaked out. Nothing escalated, ever.

How is the Rick Cole then different from the one that came back?

It’s so easy to get into the groove of life we’re in. And we categorize homeless people as people we can’t really help, like they deserve what they got. … There is a large segment of the homeless population that doesn’t want to stay in homelessness; they’re looking for a way out. They need some help, somebody to point the way to job training, point the way to rehab if they’re stuck in drugs and alcohol, to point the way to shelter. There’s a lot of success stories within the care of homelessness of seeing people getting on their feet again. ... They’re not bad people.

You talked of action, so let’s talk about the church. How do you think this experience will change your church?

Hopefully, I can influence others to not let that be our first reaction to everything, to judge. But to be more concerned and compassionate. ...

These are hard problems to solve.

I’m clear on that. Through my experience, I didn’t come away from it with a bunch of answers. I came away from it with a lot of compassion, and a lot of desire to engage in the process differently to try to find those solutions.

In your mind, would Jesus be saying, “Let’s rescind tax cuts to the wealthy so we can help the poor”?

I think if that’s an avenue that would enable us to help the poor, it’s certainly worth exploring. Ω

Women drive ascending popularity of waterfowl hunting

Girls killing birds State wildlife agencies are diversifying interest in the lucrative sport of hunting by turning their sights to a once-overlooked audience: women and children. by Brooke Purves Ducks, geese and other winged prey better watch their feathered backs.

Applications for waterfowl hunting have experienced a steady increase over the past decade in California, ringing in at a peak 1.34 million license items last year. Here in Sacramento County, 67 percent of the hunting license items issued to locals were for waterfowl-related items.

The ascending interest could be attributed to the popularity of a certain reality show featuring hirsute duckyodelers, or to a social shift in which local, wild meats are encouraged over factory-farmed fowl. “For me, it was an opportunity to engage in that real environment and also obtain food in a sustainable way,� said Christine Cunningham, a hunting-education instructor and author. “We know food tastes better the more involved we are with it and the closer to the source it is.�

Whatever the case, numerous organizations, including the federal Bureau of Land Management, are spending more time cultivating new fowl hunters through programs for youth, women and mobility-impaired hunters.

It’s working. Overall, general hunting numbers have remained “pretty flat� over the past decade, said Brad Burkholder, a senior environmental scientist at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Yearly sales of hunting license applications in the state have dropped about 9 percent since 2000, according to department data.

But more and more game bird hunters are heeding the proverbial quail call. Applications to shoot birds have increased by nearly 42 percent since 2000—27 percent in the past four years alone.

Fish and Wildlife has a financial stake in getting these families to hunt, as it’s a good source of revenue for the state agency. The department reported $5.4 million in game bird hunting revenues last year.

Big hunting licenses and deer tags, as well as wild pig, bear and other game tags and drawings brought in an additional $19 million. That’s $24.4 million in hunting-related sales on public lands for 2013. Ί

California leads nation in cop fatalities, but job has gotten safer or motorcycle accidents, while 10.4 percent died as a result of a vehicular pursuit or assault.

“Automobile accidents are a major, major factor in deaths,” said Sacramento State criminal justice professor William Vizzard, a former cop himself.

Though widely known, the dangers of the job have become less fatal than they used to be. Last year, “only” 105 cops died on the job. With any luck, the nation will dodge the century mark for the first time in 71 years, when 91 officers perished in 1943.

In Sacramento County, 36 peace officers have died in the line of duty since 1850, according to a review of Officer Down data, largely as a result of gunfire. The deaths of Oliver and Davis are the latest additions to this sad tally.

Oliver was the first to fall—shot in the forehead while approaching an occupied vehicle in the parking lot of a dingy north Sacramento motel the morning of October 24. By the time Davis and his partner spotted the two suspects’ stolen vehicle a couple hours later in Auburn, both men knew of their colleague’s fate, and also of the wounded bystander who resisted being carjacked by the fugitive pair.

The state with the most officer casualties this year is California, which suffered 14 losses as of October 29.

That’s when a 45-year-old Pomona police officer died of a shotgun wound he sustained a day earlier, when he was first through the door serving an arrest warrant on an accused motorcycle gang member.

The state hasn’t lost this many officers since 2008, and hasn’t led the nation in this grim category since 2006, when 17 California cops expired in the field. The state also claimed that infamous title a year earlier with 18 officer casualties.

Of the estimated 1,578 California peace officers who perished in the line of duty, 45 percent died as a result of gunfire, a figure that notches up to 47.6 percent if you include accidental discharges, a review of Officer Down data shows. Such is the goal of the Below 100 campaign, a nationwide training initiative that focuses on situational awareness, law enforcement culture and safety equipment to reduce the number of on-duty deaths.

Vizzard and law professor Michael Vitiello say there are multiple reasons for the drop in officer casualties, including a sharp decline in crime rates and improvements to medical care, body armor, field training and automobile safety.

“In the ’60s and ’70s, nobody had body armor,” Vizzard said.

The bloodiest decade for authorities was the 1970s, when an average of 234 officers died each year. The nation has reached such casualty figures only once since then, when 242 officers fell in 2001. Seventy-two died as a direct result of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Counterbalancing this data-driven positive trend, however, is the prevalence of semiautomatic small arms firepower among those most likely to shoot at cops, Vizzard noted. “The

California’s fight against tobacco lacks the punch it once had, according to a study from UC San Francisco.

Once an international model for tobacco control, the state’s efforts have suffered from cuts to the California Tobacco Control Program, a resurgence of tobacco lobbyists in state politics, and the popularity of unregulated tobacco products such as e-cigarettes, according to a UCSF press release. The report is part of a long-term research project that tracks the effect of anti-tobacco programs on public health.

The state’s Tobacco Tax and Health Protection Act, enacted in 1989, reduced the number of Smokers cost California more than packs of cigarettes sold from $18 billion annually. Thanks.

Kiera Alexander of Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks, Marina Zambrano of Cristo Rey High School in Sacramento and Maddie Reichmann of Galt High School were among five total students selected from the region as 2014 Buck Fellows by the Buck Scholars Association, a group of 282 Frank H. and Eva B. Buck Scholarship recipients.

Selectees will receive one-on-one mentoring, academic guidance and financial support for enrichment opportunities.

The fellowships are awarded to students who demonstrated substantial academic promise and personal character, but face barriers to realizing their long-term educational potential.

All of the funds for the program come from private donations and fundraising efforts by BSA members, who received full-ride Buck scholarships from the foundation, which is closing December 2015. In the summer, Bites reported on efforts

by Curtis Park residents to limit or even ban new corporate chain stores in their neighborhood.

Now it looks like the small-biz boosters are changing tactics.

The group Curtis Park Character Advocates has joined neighborhood and business groups to launch a local business “passport” program, encouraging residents to visit the small businesses in their backyard. The Sierra Curtis Neighborhood Association, the North Franklin District Business Association and the Greater Broadway Partnership are also partners.

You can pick up your passport at local businesses on Freeport Boulevard, Franklin Boulevard and Broadway. Shop local during the month of November and collect enough merchant signatures to fill up the passport, and you’ll be entered into a drawing for fabulous prizes. The drawing will be held during a Small Business Saturday event on November 29, at Pangaea Bier Cafe and Gunther’s Ice Cream Shop, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Rape at UCD Last month, SN&R published staff writer Janelle Bitker’s cover story investigating how UC Davis responds to sexual assaults. Prompted by a report earlier this year in The Washington Post, which included data that ranked UCD fifth in the nation for reported sex crimes, Bitker spoke with multiple victims about their experience.

One of the women our writer spoke with described how she had to wait nearly eight months for the university to both investigate her case and also hand down discipline. During this time, the victim’s attackers remained on campus. She also failed a class for the first time during this period, and also ended up dismissed from school for a quarter because of this.

When Student Judicial Affairs finally disciplined her attackers, Bitker reported that “the first student was found guilty of violating student conduct, but only given a quarter suspension” and the “second Perhaps the UC could student was let off completely and learn a thing or two has since graduated.”

Is taking eight months to investigate and issue discipline while a victim fails out of school a dignified response? Is allowing accused attackers to remain enrolled and on campus treating victims with “utmost” respect?

Even the National Football League now suspends its players accused of domestic violence and similar crimes. Perhaps the UC could learn a thing or two from the NFL? Anyway, it’s pretty clear to SN&R that students accused of sex crimes should not be allowed to attend class during an ongoing investigation. If this means speeding up the frustratingly slow process, then good.

UCD’s provost also wrote that the university “will never stop striving to do everything [it] can to keep all of [its] students safe and to educate all members of the UC Davis community.” This is a good thing. UC Davis has the most reported sexual assaults in the entire UC system over the past three years. (As some will point out, the fact that these crimes are being reported is a positive.) But the university needs to do more.

It must improve communication and collaboration with city police on rape cases. UCD also needs to change how it educates incoming freshman and transfer students. They cover sexual assault during orientation, yes, but it’s an online training. That’s no good— it needs to be in person, and the education needs to be ongoing; it’s easy to blow off a one-time thing.

What’s more, staff and support for victims need to be visible and easy to access. There should be signage telling people where to go if they need help, and awareness campaigns reminding students that rape is always unacceptable. That only yes means yes.

UCD needs to change its culture now. We hope they implement new policies immediately. Ω

There, roughly a hundred people circled the building, chanting, “We believe that we will win,” and “Fifteen dollars and a union,” the latter a call for a $15-an-hour living wage.

Later that day, the protests grew and demonstrators spread throughout the city.

At one point, at the main protest site, the McDonald’s and Taco Bell franchises near Broadway and 24th Street, Mayor Kevin Johnson showed up, taking the microphone to speak out in support of the workers and their pay demands.

McDonald’s. They were cited for refusal to disperse. Among them was 18-year-old Aleyna Lopez, a petite teen with fluffy hair and plastic-framed glasses.

She sat with several of her colleagues in the middle of a street, blocking the McDonald’s entrance.

She had never been involved in a protest before, but over the previous months had grown increasingly disillusioned with the low pay and poor working conditions at her job.

“It was needed for people to take that extra step,” Lopez says of the protest. “It was really symbolic.”

She is used to hard times. Since May, when she graduated from Valley High School in the Elk Grove Unified School District, she has worked two jobs: at McDonald’s and as a babysitter. For years, her mother, who works at Wal-Mart, has bounced from one unstable living arrangement to the next—staying with friends, relatives, never quite having enough for her own apartment. Her father, with whom she is currently staying, works as a janitor. He, too, struggles to make ends meet.

to bring in a bit more cash. “But my granddad’s been having a lot of medical problems. We’ve been taking him in and out of the hospital. So, I’ve been helping pay.”

Welcome to low-wage Sacramento.

Life Life on on minimum minimum Despite the fact that politicians around the country are now talking about the minimum wage and poverty—and that Mayor Johnson has urged passage of the $10.10 federal minimum championed by President Barack Obama—thousands of Sacramentans still earn too little to make ends meet. Many California cities are now going it alone, raising their local minimum wages to levels far higher than that proposed by Obama.

But Sacramento itself has not followed suit.

For workers such as Lopez, that means the daily grind continues unabated.

A number of local activists, union organizers and religious leaders have set their sights on a minimum-wage increase. And they are using the stories of workers such as Lopez to build public support.

Lopez works for $9 an hour for a local McDonald’s. Her shoes are falling apart. The last clothes she bought were the trousers and shirts that make up her fast-food uniform. On a fairly regular basis, she misses meals. McDonald’s gives half off to employees, but only, she says, if they spend at least $4 on a meal. Since she can’t often rustle up that amount, during the day she makes do with a dollar burger.

“I usually just go to sleep so I don’t have to be hungry,” she says.

Dominga Ocampo-Romero, a 42-year-old mother of three who works for a Jack-in-the-Box in south Sacramento, says every penny has to be counted. A month ago, she jammed her hand in a bathroom door while cleaning the facilities at work, mangling several fingers. Now, she juggles several thousand dollars in medical bills with rent (she, her husband, and their three children live in a small, two bedroom apartment), car insurance and utilities payments.

She calculates the cost of each meal, down to the last cent. Since her accident, she has been on sick leave, putting a huge strain on her family’s finances: The entire family is now reliant only on her husband’s minimum-wage income.

“I got yesterday 10 pounds of rice, $10.49, and beans. Three pounds is $5. And chicken is $3.49 for a package,” she says of her shopping.

She will, she explains, try to make the meat last across at least two meals.

Ocampo-Romero worries that her accident has ruined whatever precarious financial calculus she had established. “Yesterday I cry, cry, cry,” she says, her hair pulled back in a scrunchy, her busted fingers awkwardly sticking out from her hand. “I have no money, and I need to help my mom,” who also has high medical bills, she says. “I go to my room; it’s too much, too much stress.”

She recently joined the strikers, calling for a living wage to replace the pittance that she currently earns. She has worked since she was 16—in garment factories in Tijuana; in fast food outlets in California—and she is tired of the daily struggle to stay afloat.

“No vacation, no nothing,” she says, in fractured English. “Fifteen dollars an hour is not too

much of a stretch—for bills, for food. It’s better.

Medication too. Right now, I think all the time, ‘Oh my God, no money.’”

A new movement Working 40 hours a week, a minimum-wage worker in California—where the statewide minimum stands at $9 per hour—earns only $360.

If they are trying to support a family of four, the federal poverty level is estimated at roughly $23,000. A minimum-wage family head earns thousands of dollars below the poverty line.

And many minimum-wage workers, especially in the fast-food industry, end up working far less than 40 hours each week, their companies deliberately keeping them under 32 hours so as not to have to provide them health benefits.

Raise their pay to $15 per hour, as supporters of the living-wage movement argue, and you pull millions of Californians out of poverty.

Do so at your peril, opponents counter, since a higher minimum wage could force many companies—especially mom-and-pop businesses—to close down, or at least to pare back their workforce. It is a debate that has increasingly come to occupy political center-stage over the past couple of years.

Last year, with national attention focused on growing wage inequalities, Sacramento hosted a statewide policy debate that resulted in legislators increasing the minimum, in a series of incremental steps. By 2016, it will be up to $10 per hour.

For labor reformers, this represented a good start. But not a conclusion; it was better than

nothing, but still left too many workers and their families vulnerable to poverty.

It still left people like Lopez running out of cash a week into their biweekly pay check.

It still left shredded their dreams of upward mobility—of being able to attend college, of being able to do more than work a dead-end job year-in, year-out.

In the wake of the passage of California’s minimum-wage bill, many city reformers began pushing their own local minimum-wage ordinances, hoping to do the state one better.

Here in Sacramento, Bill Camp, executive director of the Sacramento Labor Council, started doing the rounds. Camp, who has been involved in labor organizing for decades, initiated a string of meetings with local ministers and community organizers, trying to generate momentum to push for a living wage.

The living wage movement, he argued, “in the most basic way is informing the public you’ve got to raise the minimum wage to 15 bucks. It’s not intellectuals saying it, it’s ordinary workers. If you want people to be engaged, you’ve got to give them a vision that’s inspirational.”

Camp, who is slated to retire at year’s end, is using his remaining time at the council to further the campaign for a local minimum wage hike, meeting with the SEIU and the other unions that work with low-wage workers to secure their support.

“It’s our goal to put the $15 minimum wage on the ballot in Sacramento in November 2016,” he said. “We’ll do it by initiative, because we don’t trust the city council.”

Higher Higher wages wages everywhere everywhere ... ...

With the federal government stalemated over major economic reforms, much of the energy for a minimum-wage hike has devolved down to cities and states. California led the way last year with its $10 minimum. San Francisco state Senator Mark Leno tried to bump it to $13, but his bill failed.

The defeat was galling to Leno, both because California has a higher-than-average cost of living—estimates are that it’s at least 30 percent more expensive to live in the Golden State than it is to live in states such as Mississippi—and also because even forgetting the cost of living issue it is simply impossible for a family of four anywhere in America to experience economic security on one minimum-wage income.

“My intent was to end the legality of paying poverty wages. I’ve never heard a sound argument as to why it should be legal to work fulltime and be in poverty,” says Leno. “We could raise millions of Californians out of poverty with a $13 minimum wage.”

Reformers in a growing number of California cities have began going it alone, some taking as their inspiration the fact that, this past spring, Seattle passed a citywide $15 minimum wage.

It was backed by politicians, the mayor, and a surprising number of local businesses.

San Jose, Santa Monica and other cities had enacted higher baseline wages over the past few years as well. In San Francisco, an across-the-board minimum of $15 was voted on on Tuesday. And in Sonoma, Sebastopol and Petaluma, all city workers and contractors must earn at least $13.31 per hour, plus benefits, or $15 hourly without benefits. Activists in the far north in Eureka are pushing for a $12 citywide minimum. And in nearby Davis, local campaigners have been pushing for a $15 minimum.

Voters in Oakland, which currently has a living-wage ordinance covering all workers in its sprawling port, on Election Day also voted on a big hike in their minimum wage to $12.25. And in San Diego, historically considered one of the more conservative cities in the state, an $11.50 minimum, to be implemented by 2017, was recently approved.

In the state’s biggest metropolis, Los Angelenos voted on two measures this past Tuesday that, if passed, would extend livingwage protections to city workers and employees of companies contracting with the city, as well as to all workers within the boundaries of the LAX airport.

And yet, absent from the list of California cities jumping aboard the living wage train this electoral season are the large Central Valley towns of Sacramento and Fresno.

“The most challenging part of the state to do living wage or minimum wage? Hands down it’s the Central Valley,” said Marty Bennett, co-chair of North Bay Jobs with Justice. “Labor is very weak” in these counties, he explained.

As a result, more than one in four workers in Sacramento earns less per hour than the $13 that Leno had proposed as a new statewide baseline.

While the median hourly wage in the state capital is $19.82, the 25th percentile wage is only $12.30. For cashiers, the average wage is only a few cents over the $10 mark. Disproportionately, the low-wage jobs are concentrated in retail, food service and hotels. Those are the workers who would have seen their wages rise had Leno’s measure passed.

Now, their best hope for a short-term pay raise lies with local activists and their ability to generate enthusiasm for a city initiative in 2016.

“Unemployment is high, wages are low,” the California Budget Project’s Luke Reidenbach says of Sacramento. “This is a place that could really benefit from an increase.”

“That’s the dream,” says 29-year-old community organizer David Mazariegos, who spends several hours each day discussing issues such as low wages with community residents in south Sacramento and Oak Park. “That we get a movement strong enough, robust enough, that we can move that type of initiative here in Sacramento.”

... ... except except Sacramento Sacramento Nine years ago, Sacramento did actually pass a very limited living-wage ordinance, pushed largely by Camp’s Central Labor Council, covering city contractors. But the measure only affected employees working for contractors doing more than $100,000 of business with the city. Since then, efforts to expand baseline wage protections across the board have largely floundered.

And that sits wrong with local labor leaders, faith-based community organizers, and service sector activists. “I know people that work in fast food and have a child at home,” says Minister Valdez Anderson, of St. Stephen AME Zion in Del Paso Heights. Anderson works with many of the city’s low-income families.

“They can’t make ends meet, make the rent, keep the lights on. Right now, we have to combat corporations that don’t want to pay their employees what they should be paid to make a living wage.”

Minimum-wage workers, says Anderson, “are the same people that don’t get any sick leave, paternity leave—none of these types of things. If they take a day off, they lose a day of pay.”

They are also the workers who end up utilizing state and federal programs to bridge the financial gaps. Statewide, through the provision of medical assistance and other aid, California ends up subsidizing corporations that underpay their workers, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

The ministers and activists of ACT hope to turn the scandal of minimum-wage workers having to fall back on public assistance into a water-cooler conversation topic. They know they have missed the boat for 2014, but they’re hoping that, by 2016, Sacramento will have caught up with the other big cities in the state.

By then, they argue, public support will have grown to the point where ACT could either push

for a ballot initiative to raise the minimum wage, or lobby a majority on the city council to vote for an increase.

For that to happen, though, the council and mayor will have to feel the heat.

Johnson, despite supporting a pay hike for the fast-food strikers, opposes a city ordinance or initiative to create a higher citywide minimum wage.

Last year, he was called to task for this by PBS and NPR commentator Tavis Smiley, during an “Indivisible Forum” on AfricanAmerican community empowerment, held at the Citizen Hotel. Keen to bring high profile projects, such as the Kings arena, to Sacramento, Johnson has been loath to lend his support to wage-structure changes that might scare off some large investors.

More generally, the mayor has largely distanced himself from the more assertive trade unions, preferring instead to put his energies into campaigning for the higher federal wage that Obama has pushed for. (Johnson’s office did not return calls asking for comment for this article.)

Many council members also oppose focusing attention on the high minimum wage. And while ACT believes that Councilman Jay Schenirer is sympathetic to their cause, and would likely vote to support an increased local minimum if presented with the opportunity, he too declined to discuss the issue with SN&R. Local politicians’ recalcitrance on this issue isn’t surprising, given the level of Chamber of Commerce opposition to any local increase.

Other cities have seen more chamber cooperation, but Sacramento in recent years hasn’t seen either Chamber flexibility or union strength, so the idea of increasing the local minimum wage has languished.

“We would not be in favor of it,” says Dennis Rogers, senior vice president for public policy

and economic development at the Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce. He argues that many minimum-wage workers are either teenagers or young adults simply looking for job experience, or are second earners in middle-class households. Increase the minimum wage, he says, and you simply discourage employers from hiring these individuals.

Rogers is right about a disproportionate number of minimum-wage jobs being filled by teenagers—but only up to a point. In recent years, an increasing number of older workers, including those supporting families, have had to take jobs in sectors of the economy that used to be the preserve of young people. And that trend is only likely to escalate as more traditional bluecollar jobs continue to disappear.

The fact that Sacramento’s cost-of-living index is much less than many other big cities in California, though still higher than national average, only adds grist to Rogers’ mill. “The statistics,” Rogers declares, “bear out the fact that an increase in the minimum wage is not something we need.”

A conversation, at the minimum Despite cautious politics and local-business opposition, the national “Fight for Fifteen” movement might just change Sacramento. After all, especially since 2008, new jobs that have been replacing decent-paying manufacturing gigs have been low-end service-sector positions and, disproportionately, workers in industries such as fast food, hotels, and big-box department stores. These jobs earn at or near the legal minimum wage.

“All over the world,” says Camp, “we’re being crushed by the 1 percent. The obscene separation of income and wealth. Where we raise the minimum wage, working-class people have a better life, and it drives economic growth.” The unions, Camp argues, need to “educate, agitate, and organize” around the issue.

They need, the organizers believe, to highlight stories like Lopez: How she put an app on her phone so that she could easily sell her old clothes to raise a few dollars to help her parents pay their bills. Five dollars here, $5 there—every little bit helped.

“Since I can remember, we haven’t had a house to ourselves,” Lopez explained. She hopes if she just saves that little bit extra, one day she and her mom could actually move into an apartment and call it their home.

In recent months, fast-food workers and others frame this as an issue of dignity. The minimum-wage movement is now one with deeply moral overtones. “The Bible says when a man works, at the end of the day pay the man his wages. Plain and simple,” says Anderson.

Anderson’s friend and fellow ACT organizer Danielle Williams says this living-wage message resonates. “Economic dignity has come up over and over and over with congregations in our community.

“I think Sacramento is ready to have that conversation.” Ω

It happened the third Wednesday this past May, after the morning commute, when cars and trucks zigzag southbound on 15th Street and state workers in Seinfeld white sneakers circumnavigate Capitol Park. The scene had eased into an unhurried spell, and that was when Abramson headed out to the gym. She recalls standing on the sidewalk, looking at her watch—10:35 a.m.—then peering down the block toward N Street. “There was no one around me,” she told SN&R. Next thing she knew, she was lying face down in a bush, staring at dirt.

There were no witnesses. She says a bicyclist—assumedly heading north on the sidewalk at a pretty decent clip—rammed into her left side. He was a very tall, skinny, baby-faced young man with ear buds around his neck who began apologizing profusely. “Let me help you stand,” he told her.

She couldn’t. There was just “an indescribable pain.” She screamed.

A surgeon later informed that her left femur was fractured in multiple places. Now, her left leg is shorter and she walks with a cane. This

week, she’ll undergo throat surgery to remedy a complication that occurred during a one of her previous procedures. This will leave her unable to speak for weeks, maybe longer.

“How the hell did this happen? I will never understand,” she told SN&R. “Why?” Abramson has become the face of bicycling reform in Sacramento. After three decades of zero changes to city rules, leaders are now realizing that, especially in the urban core, things aren’t always safe for pedestrians and cyclists.

Abramson, a former Sacramento Bee reporter, wants a sidewalk ban. No exceptions.

And a lot of grid-dwelling Sacramentans might agree. For years, they’ve complained about the proverbial “bro on a cruiser” riding on the sidewalk.

Others say the sidewalk issue is a distraction.

That the city needs to focus on things such as safer bike lanes, fewer cars and dedicated bike routes. They remind that mid-century city planners designed Midtown and downtown’s streets for commuters in cars, not for people who want to walk or bike and enjoy urban life. That’s why some opt for the sidewalk.

Abramson doesn’t have much sympathy.

“I’ve been on bikes, too. But if I felt unsafe, I wouldn’t ride them in the urban core, period,” she says.

She means business: Last month, her attorney filed a claim against the city, arguing that its bike rules are insufficient. The claim could be a precursor to a $3.5 million lawsuit.

while now. But this Thursday, they’ll finally sit down at a law-and-legislation committee meeting to discuss modernizing the laws. Abramson and others will be there to chime in.

Will the city reform bicycling as we know it?

Or will they just ban bicycles from sidewalks?

Banning Bikes ‘a no Brainer’?

City staffer Randi Knott will lead the presentation on Thursday. She says the process of updating the city’s bike laws, because of what she calls a “wonderful influx of cyclists” in recent years, will need to be “comprehensive.” That means it’s not just about sidewalks; it’s about lanes, signage, education and speed limits.

Everything. This week is just the first step.

Council could pass a final ordinance by late January.

It’s worth noting that the city code is truly outdated. Bike riding on sidewalks is allowed in the “residence district,” according to section 10.76.010. But this rule was written three decades ago, and it’s difficult, especially in the central city, to tell the difference between commercial and residential areas. This confusion also makes it hard for police to enforce bike rules.

Not that the fine for riding a bike on the sidewalk in areas where you shouldn’t puts a dent in your wallet: It’s just $5, the same as it’s been since the 1980s.

Knott and others at City Hall told SN&R, though, that kicking cyclists past the curb and into the streets isn’t realistic. “I don’t think an outright, complete ban would be practical,” she said.

Teri Duarte, with the pedestrian-advocacy group WALKSacramento, also agrees that a hard-and-fast prohibition won’t address bigpicture problems. “We don’t have the bicycle and walking infrastructure that we need,” she explained. “Bicycling on the sidewalk is really just a symptom of the problem.”

A few California cities have a total ban on sidewalk biking. San Diego prohibits sidewalk riding throughout the city—and with a $5 enforcement fine, according to a city of Sacramento report. San Luis Obispo also has a

total ban. Ditto San Francisco, and with a $100 fine—although kids under 13 years old are allowed to ride on any sidewalk. In Davis, which always gets kudos for being a bike-friendly city, bikes on sidewalks are banned in downtown’s business district and other specified areas, with fines of up to $250. Only Long Beach enforces a hard-and-fast speed limit.

Despite a lack of complete bans in other cities, Abramson still hopes for one. “To me, it’s a no-brainer. I have absolutely no idea why

“Boom, I got hit sideways. I flew out of one of my shoes,” she remembers. The collision shattered her elbow in four places, and seven years later she still takes medication three times day to address the pain and chronic suffering.

She says she’s “not too happy about that at all” that, to this day, the city hasn’t addressed how to make sidewalks and streets safer for walkers and bikers. “It’s still going on.”

Her attorney, John Poswall, says the city has been irresponsible in its failure to act so far. “And it’s getting worse downtown, of course, and there’s more people down there now,” he said.

Sacramento does not have data on bikepedestrian accidents.

Poswall worries that the sidewalk issue is getting politicized and the final solution will be a “cop out” that allows biking on the sidewalk. Or that council members ban it, but without a significant fine to act as a deterrent.

He said he is prepared to follow through with his threat of a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the city.

The Bigger issue

Most bike advocates and even city leaders like Schenirer say the bigger problem is that Sacramento’s streets, especially in Midtown and downtown, simply need to be a helluva lot more bike-friendly.

Chris Morfas, longtime transportation and policy advocate and the former board chairman at the California Bicycle Coalition, says the solution is to “create streets for everyone.”

He reminded SN&R that too many central-city streets—such a J, I, L, 15th,16th and more—“look like and function as surface street expressways straight out of a mid-1960s Caltrans design manual.” Their sole purpose, he says, is to move nine-to-fivers to work and back home to the suburbs. They no longer vibe with the vision of Midtown and downtown as interconnected commercial and residential micro-communities.

“The grid is just a very confusing place for everyone,” he says. “No wonder some people ride on the sidewalk. The streets do not serve the community, they serve the commuters.”

As a solution, Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates wants to see things such as better signage for where bikers can ride safely, more interconnectivity of bike lanes, separation from car traffic and bike lanes.

The city actually is already soliciting feedback on how to make Sacramento better for bikes. The project, called “Grid 2.0,” has a website (www.sacgrid.com) where residents can share ideas.

In the meantime, everyone agrees that there needs to be policy that holds bikers accountable, like speed restrictions, and even fines tailored specifically for bike riders. The state allows local governments to adopt different fine structures just for cyclists. This means, for instance, that if a bike runs a red light, the city can adopt a different amount for the fine than what a vehicle would pay. Sacramento has not done this, but Davis has.

All this just might happen by early next year, which is the city’s planned deadline for a new ordinance. And there are many other ideas in the pipe, including “road diets,” where lanes for car traffic disappear and bike lanes pop up. One street that could change is 12th; there’s talk of installing a two-way bike lane next on that road, so that inbound commuter traffic from Highway 160, light rail and bikes would co-exist on the same thoroughfare.

These are all radically innovative transit ideas, at least for Sacramento. And, little surprise, implementing them is complicated.

First, it’s a matter of budget priorities.

Morfas points out that, while the city says it needs to be more bike-friendly and wants to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, the city also makes a significant amount of revenue off parking. And they’ll need to keep that revenue up to pay for downtown’s new Kings arena.

When it comes to bike improvements, “to what extent does the parking-arena deal tie our hands?” he asked.

Others point out that the city is bigger than just Midtown and downtown. And that some of the most dangerous places to ride a bike are outside the grid.

Where the sidewalk ends is just the beginning.

Temporary ending Of the three words in the name of the Sacramento Temporary Contemporary gallery, the middle is now coming to fruition. With reGROUP SHOW spect to Monty Python, the art space will meet its end at the end of this month, pushing up the daisies, expiring, kicking the bucket, going to the big art gallery in the sky.

And it will be missed, as it has showcased a variety of contemporary art over its five years of existence that was often intriguing and, sometimes, just plain cool.

Although the flavor of this homemade version of Thai eggplant basil was that familiar spicy, salty yet sweet amalgam of the Thai-restaurant standard, the cooking time for the eggplant in the recipe was inadequate. Noisy-eggplant inadequate.

Otherwise, this recipe from Vegetarian Times (www.vegetariantimes.com/recipe/ thai-spicy-eggplant-with-sweet-basil) was easy and quick, because as long as an alteration is made to improve the texture of the eggplant, it’s actually kind of impressive. And being responsible for cooking eggplant that’s so tender that it melts in between the palate and the tongue—that does seem more appealing than squeaking between the teeth, doesn’t it?

Blackbird is back with chefowner Carina Lampkin again at the helm. It’s located in its original space with a similar aesthetic, though with more focus on beer and bar food to better complement the seafood-inspired dinner menu.

A burger served with house pickles, seven-day housecured bacon, cheddar and sweet ’n’ chivey “awesome sauce” make for one of the city’s best burgers, no question. Chowder fries, however, are nifty in theory—fries covered in bay shrimp, bacon and parsley, then doused with chowder. It’s a play on poutine, but a lack of acid and serious sogginess issues mar it from being a landmark dish.

Midtown Block Butcher Bar This place serves the holy trinity of European cuisine: meat, cheese and alcoholic beverages. Most of its boards and plates are balanced using three basic tastes: salty (meats and cheeses), sweet (honey and jam) and sour (pickles and vinegar). The charcuterie boards impress visually and on the tongue.

A recent selection included shaved almonds, neat piles of meat, mustard, pickled cauliflower and beets, served with small slices of bread.

The ’nduja sandwich is startlingly spicy and salty, with rich melted cheese and ground meat spread between pressed slices of bread. Or try the pressed serrano ham, manchego cheese, arugula and salsa sandwich—it’s like a cross between a cubano, a breakfast panini and a torta. Elsewhere on the menu there are fine cocktails, an intimidating whiskey list, and a small but diverse selection of beer and wine, both regional and international.

Capital Dime Restaurant With a new chef and menu, this Midtown eatery has transformed into a farm-to-forkthemed place for smart bar bites and appealing sandwiches and salads. Try the bacon lollipops, perhaps the tastiest little creations ever put on a stick. Here, salty rib bacon is slathered with melted brown sugar and whispers of cayenne and cinnamon more hushed than the juiciest of rumors.

Sweet-potato pierogis are tasty, puffy packets of potato drizzled with sour cream and shredded-duck confit. A duck burger with fig jam and plenty of crispy onions makes for a gamy change of pace, but the rib bacon whiskey burger—with crunchy lumps of house-made pickle, cheddar and a landslide of crispy fried onions—just

Der Biergarten This spot is a slightly quirky, low-key place with only nine food items on the menu: four appetizerstyle options, four sandwichtype offerings and a sausage platter, plus about 30 cold ones on tap. Patrons order from a building that was built from a couple of cargo containers and dine outdoors on communal benches, traditional German biergarten style. The Derfinater Dog is a gussied-up hot dog, and despite its seemingly excessive number of toppings, everything serves a tasteful purpose. Goldfield Trading Post This new eatery rustles up much nicer chow than your usual cowboy fare with a menu that

features dishes with names like Grandma’s Meat Loaf.

Grandma knows how to make some meat loaf, that’s for sure: slabs of beef ground with bacon are glazed with a sweet sauce, served atop the cheesiest mashed potatoes this side of Wisconsin. The Gold Panner’s Pork Chop was flat-out fantastic, oozing juicy flavor from its fire-kissed crust. Housemade cinnamon applesauce for dunking was a perfect accompaniment. Any good country bar worth its salt pork has chili on the menu, and Goldfield is no exception.

It’s made with chunks of tender chicken rather than ground beef, with plenty of nuggets of gold corn and black beans to boot. American.

Chef Jacob Carriker serves Southern staples such as pulled pork, brisket and ribs, plus the very California addition of smoked tri-tip.

There’s also chicken and trout—all smoked in a 7-foot hand-forged steel behemoth.

The pulled-pork sandwich is moist, smoky and falling apart with tenderness. The half-chicken is a bit dry, but benefits from a shot of sauce.

Land Park/ Curtis Park Boba Cafe For starters, try the scallion pancake; it’s salty, crunchy on the outside and chewy inside. Or, order the pan-fried beef bun, which with its doughy, crunchy wrapping strangely resembled the texture of a Taco Bell Crunchwrap, only smaller, with a much richer flavor.

Also worth sampling: pork dumplings served as a firm dough wrapping filled with a rich pork broth and a small ball of meat. The “Taiwan Style Stewed Pork Over Rice,” a red-braised pork, is a tender, deep-red colored pork marinated in earthy aromatic spices and copious amounts of soy sauce. Paired with an egg and a heaping pile of rice, it’s one of the most comforting rice plates in Sacramento.

Pangaea Bier Cafe recently stepped up its food game to satisfy that need with a revamped menu that includes an ever-changing rotation of seasonal, slightly upscale pub food. Try the Buffalo wings: They’re deeply flavorful fried morsels with a thick glaze.

The mac ’n’ cheese is creamy, with a bit of beer in the sauce and a crunchy topping of herb-flecked breadcrumbs.

The sliders are gorgeous little mouthfuls with Tillamook cheddar and house-made pickles. The main-course cheeseburger, one of the best we’ve had in ages, is made from a custom blend of brisket and chuck. This is a juicy patty that holds together, yet bursts with flavor. South Sac Bodhi Bowl This Vietnamese eatery’s menu is all vegetarian and mostly vegan, with plenty of high notes. The Heavenly Noodle is a can’t-go-wrong salad comprising snow-white vermicelli noodles with cooling mint, cucumber slices, house-roasted peanuts and jagged pieces of faux beef. The “beef” actually is slightly sweet, plenty umami and pleasantly inoffensive, as far as fake meat goes.

Kansai Ramen & Sushi House This place serves its own take on ramen and sushi, with varying degrees of success. The kakuni ramen, which features three thick slices of braised pork belly in lieu of the house ramen’s thin slices of chashu, boasts a nice, sweet marinade; tender consistency; and copious flavor. The sushi rolls here are Western style—aka loaded with toppings. Try the Mufasa roll. With crab and avocado on the inside and salmon and sauce outside, it’s particularly tasty, seasoned in sesame oil and baked— a somewhat unusual technique for sushi. Japanese.

It’s like a subtle, healthier version of a club sandwich, with organic chicken, avocado, spinach, cucumber, roasted onion and Swiss cheese—all set between sourdough bread and grilled on a panini press. It boasts a crunchy texture from all the veggies, a light boost of piquant flavor from a “pepper plant sauce,” and won’t leave you feeling overly stuffed after eating it.

The Waffle Experience A whole menu of waffles—sounds heavenly, no? But hold your forks—these aren’t your mom’s buttermilk beauties full of syrup. They’re traditional Belgian liège waffles, which are closer to bread than pastry. Open for breakfast and lunch, the menu offers choices that include breakfast creations and dishes labeled “Two Hands Required”— i.e., waffle sandwiches. All are packed with flavor. The “Eggcellent” consists of applewood bacon, fontina, egg, arugula, and sun-dried tomato aioli sandwiched between fennel seed waffles.

It’s messy, but worth the extra napkins. “Cheeses Gone Wild” is a grilled cheese for grown-ups, with four kinds of cheese, bacon, kale, fennel confit and caramelized leek waffles. The rich cheeses are well balanced by the greens and slightly acidic confit.

Feeling exhausted? Stressed? Physically tense? Leo Hickman believes in the power of tea to cure what ails you. The owner of Hidden House, an alternative wellness center in Midtown, opened up a second outpost of his Classy Hippie Cafe a couple of weeks ago. The first location is actually inside his health center; the second is inside the Midtown Collective (1914 P Street), a group of boutiques sharing one roof anchored by the Firefly Exchange. Hickman approaches tea from an Eastern, Ayurvedic mentality. He even has special teas to balance your doshas. (If you don’t know what that means, don’t worry about it.) Hickman’s passion lies in the leaves, which he insists must be loose and given plenty of room to expand. And he steeps them for a mere 30 seconds, only seeking that initial infusion of flavors. A cup-to-go costs $3.50, but if you want to take advantage of one of four seats inside, you can pour from pot to a one-ounce, warmed tasting cup. As Hickman says: “Coffee is fast. Tea is slow. ... It’s liquid meditation.”

All about that bass and treble The FesTival oF New americaN music So it’s been over a week and a half since T-Swift dropped 1989, the most life-altering album since Beyonce’s eponymous release nearly a year ago, and now the rest of the music landscape just seems incurably dull MuSic in comparison, right?

Totes. Luckily, the Festival of New American Music, a 10-day festival dedicated to up-and-coming composers and performers of contemporary classical music, is rolling into town for its 37th year in a row—and just in time.

The festival features acclaimed musicians such as the New York City quartet loadbang; solo pianist Lara Downes (pictured); and Sac State alum and violinist Chase Spruill playing with Michael Riesman, keyboardist for the Philip Glass Ensemble. Attendees will have the opportunity not only to witness world-class musicians take the stage, but to partake in master classes in violin, cello, piano and voice. Competitions among student composers and performers will also take place in addition to forums with professional composers. Oh, and the festival—including classes and lectures—is totally free.

Hosted by Sacramento State University, events are scheduled to take place on campus as well as at the Crocker Art Museum (216 O Street), McClatchy High School (3066 Freeport Boulevard), Rio Americano High School (4540 American River Drive) and Sacramento City College (3835 Freeport Boulevard).

Hay Fever Timothy Nutter of the Art Theater of Davis clearly loves classics from a century ago. He launched the company with dramas such as Chekhov’s Three by Jeff Hudson Sisters (1900) and Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler (1890). He’s currently staging Noël Coward’s comedy Hay Fever (1924) and next up is Johan Wolfgang von Goethe’s tragedy Egmont (1788).

Here’s hoping Nutter keeps it up, because these are wonderful plays which most companies hereabouts stage only occasionally. Nutter even likes to have an old-school curtain drawn aside as each act begins, a marvelous custom.

and assumptions. And while the costumes and sets are perforce low budget, they are nonetheless well chosen, including a vintage wooden tennis racquet, a 1920s-style sofa for two, and a functional piano. Ω

This play about the education of the blind, deaf and mute girl Helen Keller is a certifiable American classic. The original 1959 Broadway production featured Anne Bancroft as teacher Annie Sullivan, and the teenage Patty Duke as Keller (Duke later got an Oscar for the movie version). Because this story of a girl’s transition from “wild child” to literate adult continues to fascinate audiences nationwide, the play is periodically revived locally (the Sacramento Theatre Company did it in 2012, for example).

The play is set in an affluent residence in Alabama during the late 1800s, and fortuitously, this current production is staged in a thoroughly appropriate venue: the beautifully restored Woodland Opera House (dating from 1895, modeled on a 19th century English music hall).

The historic venue adds something special to this well-crafted community production.

Actress Patricia Glass has played Annie Sullivan before with the Florissant Valley Theatre of the Deaf in St. Louis, and Glass works will with Emily-Jo Seminoff (as Helen Keller). Their teacher-pupil relationship is very credible, and the highly physical scene involving Keller’s fit of temper at the dinner table is pretty spectacular.

Director Dean Shellenberger keeps the story on mission, tending to the secondary family conflicts (like the difficult father-son relationship that serves as counterbalance to the main story about Helen’s remarkable education).

Shellenberger also retains the episode late in the play in which Helen hugs a loveable dog—and as is always the case, the dog (named Lacey, part lab, part golden retriever) steals the scene.

Another dime in the jukebox California Musical Theatre gets its Broadway Sacramento season started this week with a touring production of Jersey Boys. The Tony- and Grammywinning jukebox musical tells the story of the popular rock group the Four Seasons (who were also sometimes billed as Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons). The group was best known for its early ’60s falsetto-laden hits such as “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Sherry” before adjusting its sound and resurfacing again in 1975 with the disco hit “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night).”

The stage version of the musical came out in 2005, and this past summer it was adapted into a musical drama film directed by Clint Eastwood. Call this one a “comedy of hesitation.” This is a sweet story involving boy likes girl and girl likes boy.

However the boy, in this case, is a 42-year-old with a touch of gray, and the girl is six years his junior, and they’re hardscrabble farmers in a rural Irish village where family conflicts simmer for generations. The story gets plenty of laughs stemming from caustic comments by salty parents nearing the end of life, and fumbling overtures between socially awkward adults who’ve never married. It’s also very Irish, a category that has always done well on the B Street stage under Buck Busfield’s deft, sympathetic direction. Th, F, 8pm; Sa 5

This production of Hay Fever is being marketed as “blissfully bad behavior,” and it’s an apt description. We’re introduced to an English family of self-obsessed artists and intellectuals: Dad writes novels, and Mom’s an actress of a certain age, reluctant to acknowledge that she has offspring who are marriageable young adults. And they all like to argue, reminding of a recent Capital Stage production of the modern play Tribes, which opened with a bruising family-feud scene. Coward, coming from a more elegant age, eases into the simmering conflicts gradually, with wit (and not a single f-bomb).

Unbeknownst to each other, each family member has invited an unsuspecting guest for the weekend, which quickly leads to chaos and assorted flirtation. Hay Fever is one part humorous exposé of the purposeless wealthy class, and one part bedroom farce. We hear lots of observations like “Marriage is a hideous affair altogether, don’t you think?” And you can’t do Coward without plenty of cigarettes (e-cigs in this case), a well-stocked bar and servants bringing in tea.

The cast—community actors (some with a good deal of experience)—does pretty well, transporting us into a bygone age of manners

Outside Mullingar

This remarkable staging of Helen Edmundson’s adaptation of the classic Russian novel benefits from deft direction (Stephanie Gularte), excellent use of ballet and movement (choreographed by Shannon Mahoney), and outstanding lead performers (Lenne Klingaman as the eponymous Anna and Brian Patrick Williams as the upstanding Levin). Add in an exemplary supporting cast and top-notch production values for a production that’s as classic as, well, a Tolstoy novel. Th, F, Sa 8pm;

Hot air ride Interstellar Among the filmmakers of his generation, director Christopher Nolan sits in a unique position of power and influence. He’s earned enough trust by Daniel Barnes and respect to make the dark, thematically ambitious, and potentially difficult films that studios usually avoid like the plague, and on the scale of his choice. Based as much on the success of his rabbit-hole actioner Inception as his moneyin-the-bank Batman movies, he got Paramount to back his moony and assaultive three-hour space epic Interstellar, even getting the studio to strike a handful of 70mm prints. Some of them are playing on IMAX screens—if you’ve ever wanted to get intimately familiar with the pores on Matthew McConaughey’s face, have I got a film for you.

Rather than liberating Nolan, however, the ability to make big-budget movies that aim to do more than sell souvenir soda cups has weighed on him like a divine task, and each film has become more dreadfully self-important than the last. Interstellar is a nonstop barrage of teachable moments, and just like The Dark Knight Rises, it is simultaneously bloated and rushed, crammed with more topical detritus than a Lee Daniels film. There is no shortage of visual spectacle here, but Interstellar flirts with big ideas and weighty themes only to avoid probing beneath their surfaces. This is Christopher Nolan’s take not just on sci-fi, but on the state of mankind, on our future, on existence itself, but even at the limits of human consciousness, Nolan can’t resist playing the bourgeois psychoanalyst.

Although composer Hans Zimmer doubles down on the “Also Sprach Zarathustra” hum any time Nolan needs an extra shot of awe, Interstellar has less in common with 2001: A Space Odyssey than with its hippie-dippy knockoff Silent Running (it has even more in common with the 1997 film Contact, which also featured McConaughey). 2001 is a beautiful enigma, but Nolan is too concerned with making big statements to be enigmatic. The film looks great in 70mm (although the frequent aspect ratio

shifts in IMAX are a little jarring), and as shot

by Hoyte Van Hoytema (Her), the images have a retro 1970s burnish. If only the film had more of that New Hollywood funkiness and less of Nolan’s iron fist.

The first act of Interstellar has been thoroughly laid out in the trailers, and it’s a pretty sleepy opening third, meticulous in its development and yet deeply impersonal. In a peaceful, pre-apocalyptic future dystopia, Earth is choked by dust and devastated by a food shortage that has forced most people to become farmers. Matthew McConaughey plays Cooper, an ex-NASA pilot working a farm where every crop except for corn has succumbed to a devastating plague. A gravitational “anomaly” in his daughter’s bedroom leads him to a nearby secret base, where a team of scientists are launching an expedition into an alternate universe to find a new home planet for humanity to take root.

Due to his NASA training, Cooper is given control of the ship, and immediately sets out on a mission of unknown length while his feisty daughter Murphy (Mackenzie Foy as a child, Jessica Chastain as an adult) begs him to stay. Michael Caine is the wise and twinkly-eyed gravitational scientist who delivers reading after reading of Dylan Thomas’ “Do not go gentle into that good night,” because of course he does. Anne Hathaway plays his daughter, a scientist who cries a lot. McConaughey is in full mystical Lincoln pitchman mode, his eyes ablaze with stars as he delivers purple zen soundbites that would make Deepak Chopra blush. It’s a good performance, but lines like, “When you become a parent, you become the ghost of your child’s future” would sound a lot better if he were wailing away on a set of bongos.

All of that, and I still cannot completely dismiss Interstellar. The original script by Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathan may only be good for hitting the nail on the head over and over again, but at least they’re taking swings.

There is something exciting about a film that tries to fill your mind and then blow it, even if it’s only filling you full of hot air. Ω

23 Blast

Football biopics have emerged as the predominant form of male-geared tearjerkers, taking over the spot once held by baseball movies and westerns. Even as the sport has taken on a more sinister edge in light of recent off-the-field incidents, as well as increasing awareness about the long-term effects of concussions, the big screen portrayals have only grown rosier.

Besides proliferating on big screens, such “based on a true story” football biopics have also been easy ratings grabbers on television. Dylan Baker’s 23 Blast falls somewhere in between—it’s getting a run in theaters, and it has the family-friendly, faith-based credentials to pull in an audience, but the production values and cast are decidedly television-sized. This is the directorial debut of the noted character actor Baker, and he has a good touch with actors and tone without ever establishing a visual sensibility or deviating too far from genre tropes. Before I Go to Sleep

A woman who, as a result of a traumatic injury in her past, awakes every day to amnesia (Nicole Kidman) and tries to slowly piece together her former life with her husband (Colin Firth), relying on the assistance of her doctor (Mark Strong)—but are they really who they seem to be? And is she? Written and directed by Rowan Joffe (from a novel by S.J. Watson), the movie is short on surprises.

With only three characters (plus a very few others that shouldn’t be spoiled) there are only so many ways the story can go. Still, for all that, suspense is strong thanks to Joffe’s steady pacing and an unsettling, menacing atmosphere. Thanks also to fine performances from the three principals—especially Kidman, understandably nervous and twitchy, afraid to turn every corner, wondering if she’s turned it before. J.L.

Big Hero 6

A Marvel comic book reconfigured to look and sound like an animated McDonald’s commercial, Big Hero 6 is still the most tolerable film to be released under the Marvel banner in years, even if the superhero origin story stuff is the least interesting piece.

The film takes place in the futuristic, East-West hybrid city of San Fransokyo, and the story follows a 13 year-old computer prodigy named Hiro Hamada, who forms a bond with an inflatable robot after his brother’s death. Despite a chaotic narrative that bloats the running time to nearly two hours, Big Hero 6 is a colorful and fast-paced entertainment, easily watchable and easily forgotten, like a shiny new toy that isn’t much fun to play with. It is preceded by the six-minute Feast, an enchanting Disney short that offers all of the warmth and soul that Big Hero 6 lacks. D.B.

Blood Ransom

A young woman on the verge of becoming a vampire (Anne Curtis) gets kidnapped and is rescued by her driver (Alexander Dreymon); the two go on the lam, pursued by a hit man (Jamie Harris) and falling in love while she fights the urge to drink her rescuer’s blood. Or something. Written and directed by Francis dela Torre, and produced in West Covina, Calif. on a budget of approximately nothing, the movie is amateurish and clumsy.

Dela Torre tells most of his incoherent story through the fake-tough voice-over narration by the hero’s cop buddy (Dion Basco). The rest is primitive dialogue with gaping pauses after every line, punctuated by frequent geysers of stage blood. Things are so cheap they didn’t even spring for uniforms for the so-called cops; everybody seems to be wearing their street clothes. J.L.

Dear White People

Writer-director Justin Simien’s impassioned but wishy washy Dear White People follows four black students at a fictional Ivy League college as they struggle to reconcile their personal and racial identities. Over the course of a semester, a simple housing dispute turns into a campuswide conflict that forces people to choose sides, even against their nature, and finally erupts into a racially charged riot. With its brash and topical take on black college life, interracial love, and race riots, Dear White People has drawn comparisons to Spike Lee’s 1980s-era output. That’s valid if simplistic, but the film’s self-righteous leanings and

Birdman

A washed-up movie star (Michael Keaton), hoping to scramble out from the shadow of the Birdman superhero blockbusters he made 20 years ago, tries to mount his own Broadway adaptation of a story by Raymond Carver, but everything seems to go wrong—starting with the fact that Birdman has infected his own unstable personality. Director and co-writer Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu’s movie invites comparison with the ultimate has-been-nutcast-movie-star picture, Billy Wilder’s Sunset Blvd.—and amazingly, it holds up under the comparison, thanks to Iñárritu’s brilliantly surrealistic technique, the can’t-look-away messy state of the protagonist’s head, Keaton’s tautly pugnacious performance, and an equally strong supporting cast (Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Stone, Amy Ryan, etc.). easy targets make it play more like the love child of Higher Learning and PCU. Simien shoots satirical buckshot, missing as often as he hits, and the clunky framing device is pure amateur hour, yet he also displays an attention to character complexity that shows genuine promise. D.B.

The Good Lie

Fleeing the Sudanese Civil War in 1987, a group of children walk 700 miles to a Kenyan refugee camp; 13 years later, now grown into young adults (Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany, Emmanuel Jal, Kuoth Wiel), they are allowed to emigrate to the U.S., where a Kansas City employment agent (Reese Witherspoon) tries to find them work while they try to adjust to their new lives. Written by Margaret Nagle and directed by Philippe Falardeau, the movie suffers some narrative awkwardness in the early scenes, but rights itself in time and goes on to build quiet power through artful understatement. Witherspoon is top-billed (and probably helped get the picture green-lighted), but the real stars are Oceng, Duany and Jal, who portray with poignant clarity the hope, frustration and confusion of immigrants in a strange new land. Laggies

Sam Rockwell has appeared in about a dozen features since 2009’s Moon, which was not a great film but probably remains his most iconic screen role. While I have not seen all of his post-Moon films, I am certain that Rockwell’s performance was the best part of every single one. Being the best part of pleasantly forgettable films has become an unfortunate cottage industry for the diversely talented Rockwell, and after last year’s pleasantly forgettable The Way, Way Back, he is once again the best thing about Lynn Shelton’s pleasantly forgettable Laggies. Keira Knightley plays a disaffected, overgrown adolescent who hides out with a sympathetic teenager (Chloe Grace Moretz) in order to avoid dealing with her boyfriend’s marriage proposal. As the girl’s father, Rockwell casually and dismissively steals scenes, almost as though the film’s attitude of wistful insouciance is utterly beneath him. It is, of course. D.B.

A former petty thief (Jake Gyllenhaal) launches himself on a career as a freelance video “journalist,” stalking street crimes and accidents and selling what he shoots to the desperate news director of a low-rated L.A. neon mean streets instead of the studios of Hollywood, willing to stoop to anything, even murder. Fascinating to see how far journalism has fallen since the heyday of Watergate and All the President’s Men—or even 1987’s Broadcast News. This world is populated mainly by bottom-feeding sociopaths and the moral idiots who enable them, with only feeble protests of integrity from the sidelines, easily quashed and ignored. J.L.

Sixteen years removed from Rushmore, Bill Murray could play the curmudgeonwith-a-heart-of-fool’s-gold role in his sleep.

It’s to his credit that Murray is wide awake and close to great in Theodore Melfi’s St. Vincent, especially since the script is loaded with enough tranquilizing indie-quirk tropes to take down Dan Aykroyd. Murray is Vincent McKenna, an acerbic, alcoholic slob who earns extra cash by babysitting the precocious, bullied child of his new next-door neighbor (Melissa McCarthy, somehow the only person not overacting here).

Very little rings true in St. Vincent—not the boy, not the pregnant Russian prostitute played by Naomi Watts, not Terrence Howard’s bookie, and not the ending that is almost literally removed from Rushmore. Yet for all of his clowning, Murray gets under this character’s skin like a deer tick, bringing a lot of soul to a film that can’t match him. D.B.

In the propulsive and persistent Whiplash, writer-director Damien Chazelle takes a trope familiar to sports movies and boot camp films—the imperious coach/drill sergeant who horsewhips a raw but promising athlete/soldier into shape— and drops it into an East Coast music conservatory. Miles Teller gives another strong performance as Andrew, a hyperdriven jazz drummer languishing in second chair. Andrew catches the eye of Fletcher, the martinet conductor of the school’s most prestigious band, a black-clad, fire-breathing demon played by J.K. Simmons. Fletcher torments his student musicians with a level of vile emasculation unseen since R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket (“weepy willow shitstack” is one of Fletcher’s least offensive invectives), and Andrew endures the abuse in order to pursue greatness. Teller and Simmons don’t cut corners, even when the script does, and while Chazelle frequently seems to be fetishizing sadism, the lightningfast tempo forgives a few off-key notes. D.B.

“Rock ’n’ roll party” is perhaps the best way to describe the kind of shows local quartet Mondo Deco put on during its early gigs. Back then, the by Aaron Carnes group sported flashy outfits, used glitzy lighting and backup dancers, and even held up banners with lyrics to make their sure the choruses to their songs turned into big group singalongs.

Because they didn’t play many gigs, the band wanted to make sure each show was a big event with a style akin to the likes of the early ’70s flamboyant glam-rock artists such as David Bowie, T. Rex and Sweet.

which formed as a side project in 2010, graduated to everyone’s focus—at least for a while.

For a time, the musicians played regularly and even released a full-length album and a handful of EPs. Then, in the last year, the group’s dynamic changed again. Even as Greene and singer-guitarist Kolton James started to think about finding a way to make Mondo Deco their primary source of income via album sales and touring, drummer Billy Ewing and bassist Steve Robinson pulled back to focus on school and other career paths. There’s no intra-band discord, but now James and Greene must figure out how to advance Mondo Deco.

The pair has played a few shows as an acoustic duo under the Mondo Deco moniker—a setup that’s a far cry from those early, flashy party nights. The arrangement, Greene says, isn’t necessarily how they intend to play future shows, it’s just about keeping options open.

“If anything, it’s a way for us to kind of test the waters, experiment with new gear that didn’t always seem appropriate for a rock show,” James says.

Songwriting is different, too. In the early days the group tackled the creative process as a whole. Now Greene and James handle the vast majority, a process that means trying to balance crafting songs with more substance—but still keeping it all fun.

“It’s still got a rock ’n’ roll backbone for sure, [but] we’re trying a lot more midtempo grooves than just full steam ahead,” James says. “If you’re concentrating on the party band stuff, it can eat into the time you have for developing songs, trying to come up with a cohesive sounding album.”

Where’s the party?

“We had a very unified vision of what we wanted to do—this trashy, classy thing, an up-tempo danceable feel with a strong sense of songwriting and melody structure,” says singerguitarist Jeremy Greene. “[But] we [also] had other bands, so this was our party band.”

Now Mondo Deco, which performs November 8 at the Blue Lamp, is trying to figure out what to do once the party is over.

Things have changed, you see. The band still plays rock ’n’ roll, but it’s not strictly all good times anymore. The music, too, goes way beyond earlier influences.

“As modern songwriters we’re lucky because we have so much to pick and choose from [when it comes to genres],” Greene says. “You can re-invent the wheel as often as possible: protopunk, glam, ’60s jangly rock stuff—even now stoner rock and modern garage is fucking killer.”

Such sounds have found their way into Mondo Deco’s current style. But those aren’t the only changes. Over the years Mondo Deco,

The group currently has enough material for a new album—and has even recorded a few tracks—but its still weighing options on how to release a record and take them to the stage—the band’s ever-changing size can make booking regular shows and touring difficult. Which just means that if Greene and James want to make Mondo Deco their focus they’ll need to scale down and play as a duo more often—or enlist the help of others.

Right now, the answer is unclear, Greene says, but they’ve got momentum.

“We’re trying to build off of what we’ve been doing the past four-to-five years,” he says. “[We want to] gear it in the direction of being able to play two-to-three hour sets, be the sole entertainment for the night on the road.” Ω

Venues, rumors and cold, hard facts Rest in peace: Feelings were mixed at Marilyn’s on K last Saturday afternoon.

Musicians wanted to give the venue a fun and energetic send-off. Regulars already seemed to be mourning.

Then they walked in, high-fived friends and sat with their heads down, quite possibly for hours.

I assume later at night, with sets by the Diva Kings with Cuesta Drive, City of Trees Brass Band and Children of the Grave, the underground club felt far less somber.

I did catch a stellar and surprising set around 4 p.m. Surprising because I had expected a full day—1 p.m. until last call—of local bands who wanted to play Marilyn’s one last time. With no cover at the door, everyone played for tips.

Instead, we were treated to Orion Walsh, a troubadour from Nebraska.

He switched off between acoustic guitar and banjo, with harmonica and tambourine always within reach, while Blake Abbey of Musical Charis accompanied on bass and percussion.

Together, they called themselves the Rambling Hearts. They asked brave volunteers to play washboard and kazoo on stage—actually a somewhat painful begging process—to their bluesy Americana. On top of a slew of original work, Walsh sold Johnny Cash’s “Folsom State Prison” and descended offstage for an all-acoustic, singalong to Willie Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land.”

Of course, musicians took time to thank the venue. It’s been around in some capacity for 16 years, supporting both local and touring acts as well as tribute bands, live karaoke and other performance art. I’ve got my own fond memories at the place.

More venue news: Assembly Music Hall may soon have more in common with Marilyn’s on K—both live music venues, both on K Street, both potentially shuttered. Eric Rushing and Bret Bair, the owners of Ace of Spades and major players in local entertainment, are walking away from Assembly Music Hall at the end of November. The pair has been managing the venue, including booking its talent, since its opening in 2013.

“We just weren’t making money,” Bair said. “We weren’t building equity because we don’t own it.”

Unlike some of their other ventures—namely Ace of Spades and Goldfield Trading Post— Rushing and Bair don’t hold the lease to Assembly. That belongs to Paragary Restaurant Group. Callista Wengler, Paragary’s marketing director, said the owners can’t comment on the venue’s fate yet.

At 9,000 square feet, Assembly Music Hall has brought plenty of big names to Sacramento, including recent stops by the Black Lips, Bombay Bicycle Club, OK Go, ZZ Ward and Turquoise Jeep. Its final month is packed and varied: metalcore band Finch with indie rockers Maps & Atlases (Nov. 6), rock band Relient K (Nov. 9), English electronic dance producer Gareth Emery (Nov. 21) local soul powerhouse James Cavern & the Council (Nov. 26), rapper Kreayshawn (Nov. 28), reggae and hip-hop group the Holdup (Nov. 30). Plus the Sizzling Sirens burlesque troupe’s final show at the venue (Nov. 15) and a standup comedy night with Tig Notaro (Nov. 17). Bair said this October and November have been some of the most profitable months yet, but he and Rushing want to build a business elsewhere.

Where might elsewhere be?

Rumors are circulating that Bair and Rushing might purchase Witch Room.

Bair confirmed that there have been discussions, but nothing has been decided just yet. He expects to know about Witch Room—or a different space they find—in the next month or so.

“With losing Assembly, we have definitely been looking for a smaller venue to complement Ace of Spades,” he said.

The Denver J Band’s frontman Denver Saunders noted that one of his first-ever gigs was at Marilyn’s. But I think Abbey’s thank-you comments were more entertaining: “I’ve played music here a bunch of times, been blackout drunk here a bunch of times.

It’s cool to have a bar where you can go off the deep end.

“Anyway, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been drunk here.”

If you’ve never heard pianist and singer Marcia Ball, a staple of the Alligator Records roster, it’s time you got schooled. Her music—a wicked stew of blues, rock, ballads and boogie woogie—has been keeping crowds on their feet for more than three decades. She’s now touring in support of BLUES ROCK her aptly titled Alligator release, The Tattooed Lady And The Alligator Man, a piano-driven collection of soulful ditties replete with horns and wicked production. Dirk Hamilton’s been compared to Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and John Hiatt, but that list should also include Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed and Warren Zevon. Hamilton’s a songwriter, composer, arranger, musician and poet. His voice is just the right side of rough, perfect for songs like “Billboard on the Moon,” which sprang from an encounter with automatic sprinklers and streetlights on an empty stretch of road. He’s armed with guitar and harmonica, and backed by 17 albums and a FOLK lifetime of experience. Playing in a vein of garage rock similar to the Cold War Kids and the Walkmen, The Features have since been featured on one of the Twilight soundtracks and released an eponymous fourth album last year.

Veteran horror punk outfit the Misfits created a massive catalog of music that dates back to the late ’70s and originally featured Glenn Danzig on vocals. Even after HORROR PUNK many lineup changes and various legal problems involving registered trademarks, the Misfits and its current lineup march on. Now a trio featuring bassist and vocalist (and only original member) Jerry Only, drummer Eric “Chupacabra” Acre, and former Black Flag guitarist Dez Cadena, the Misfits continue to champion the classic underground hits of the past such as “Last Caress,” “Die, Die, My Darling,” and “Where Eagles Dare.” Openers include the Devils Train, Conceived In Chaos and Petty Education. 1417 R St., www.misfits.com.

Guitarist Adrian Belew once said he’s from the “Frank Zappa School of Rock.” This possibly refers to having been discovered

by Zappa in Nashville and subsequently recording and touring with him. Belew’s also worked with David Bowie, Talking Heads and Nine Inch Nails. He’s best known ROCK for his work in King Crimson, particularly the album Discipline.

Now, with Adrian Belew Power Trio, he’s taken a page out of his own book and hired the Slick siblings—Eric and Julie (drums and bass)—after seeing them play at the Paul Green School of Rock. For this tour, Julie is aboard but another young phenom named Tobias Ralph will man the skins.

Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub, 7 p.m., $12-$14 The Oh Hellos make the kind of music that one could easily imagine hearing on an hour-long television drama—in one of the last scenes FOLK ROCK when things get emotionally heavy. The band’s sound is sometimes fragile, sometimes sweetly sappy and foot-stomping, but always beautiful. Setting the schedule straight on marijuana?

I hear a judge in Sacramento may reschedule cannabis.

—Bud Mann Uh, well, not exactly. Last week, in an evidentiary hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Kimberly J. Mueller, presiding over the case of U.S. v. Schweder, heard testimony in the matter of about whether or not cannabis should even be a Schedule I drug. Schedule I drugs, as determined BEALUM by the DEA, are “drugs with no currently accepted

by NGAIO medical use and a high potential for abuse. Schedule I drugs are the most dangerous drugs of all the drug schedules with potentially severe psychological or a sk420@ ne wsreview.c om physical dependence.” The list of Schedule I drugs is very short: heroin, ecstasy, methaqualone (Quaaludes, for all you ’70s holdouts and The Wolf of Wall Street fans), LSD, marijuana and peyote.

I suppose arguments can be made that some of these drugs don’t belong on this list, but cannabis shouldn’t even be near this list. Currently accepted medical use? Check.

High potential for abuse? Nope. Game. Scoreboard. Don’t forget what the DEA’s own administrative law judge, The DEA refuses to listen Francis Young, said way to science or reason or back in 1988: “Marijuana, in their own judges. its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man. By any measure of rational analysis marijuana can be safely used within a supervised routine of medical care.” That should have ended the debate, but the DEA refuses to listen to science or reason or their own judges.

But I digress. Witnesses for the weed included renowned addiction expert Dr. Carl Hart, cannabis activist Chris Conrad and the estimable Dr. Philip Denney. I went and saw some of the proceedings. I didn’t stay long. It is a challenge for me to keep my mouth shut at things like this because I am easily upset by willful ignorance. I agree with what Denney said while on the stand: “I am perplexed as to why there’s even a debate. Cannabis does have medical value.” You can find recaps of actual testimony all over the Interwebs.

But even if by some rare chance the judge agrees that marijuana doesn’t belong on Schedule I, there’s really no way that the law will be changed. I asked Conrad if he thought they had a chance. “It doesn’t really matter,” he said. “Either way, someone will appeal. We may try to get it to the Supreme Court.” I don’t know if this case Ngaio Bealum will make it all the way to the SCOTUS, but I think he is a Sacramento is right that the outcome of this hearing won’t have a big comedian, activist effect right away. Actress uses medical marijuana after kidney transplant

T

heater aficionados know Lindsay Grimes from numerous appearances on Sacramento area stages.

Unbeknownst to many, though, is a painful struggle behind the scenes.

Lindsay, who’s 29, developed lupus during her senior year of high school.

The autoimmune disease required chemotherapy for more than six months. Her lupus went into remission, but her kidneys were damaged to an extent that she needed a transplant.

She waited a year, during which time she underwent dialysis. The donor was her mom.

“It was a really hard road after the kidney transplant,” Lindsay says. “I thought it would just start working — it would be great. It didn’t. The first year, there were a lot more surgeries. It was really tough.

“One thing I was grateful for was medical marijuana. It helped me not have to be on so many pills. They bring on a whole slew of other problems you have to worry about, and it just becomes a negative chain effect.”

With her cannabis card, she got an indica strain from a local collective, where she wound up working.

“It was very healing for me,” she says, “not just physically but emotionally and

mentally to be in that environment, with people who really cared.”

A few years later, when her acting career took off, she moved to San Francisco. Soon after, her fiancé died in a motorcycle accident; the stress triggered her lupus, and her body rejected the kidney.

“Obviously it was heartbreaking,” says Lindsay, who spent the next two years back on dialysis until receiving a second kidney transplant, from a brother.

“ One thing I was grateful for was medical marijuana. It helped me not have to be on so many pills.”

Now, five years later, she says she’s as healthy as she’s ever been. She lives in West Sacramento with her boyfriend and “small zoo” of three cats and two dogs.

Friends know about her medical history — and medicine choice.

“It’s not something that I’m hiding,” Lindsay says. “I’m just discreet.”

GEMINI (May 21-June 20):

“Pregreening” is a term for what impatient drivers do as they are waiting at a red light.

Poppin’ that pup collar After losing her job during the 2008 financial crisis, Amy McMullan had to figure out something new. And fast.

Well, she loved dogs. Pitbulls, specifically. She even founded a pitbull rescue nonprofit, assuming that’d be her full-time gig. But one day, the former graphic designer found herself in her garage, crafting leather dog collars that would soon earn her an international following. McMullan started off selling her bejeweled, artisan dog collars to friends, then at festivals, then on Etsy, then on her own Karma Collars website. In June, she opened her first brick-and-mortar shop, which doubles as a gallery and work space, at 3409 Third Avenue in Oak Park. McMullan takes pride in her craft, and individual collars go for $30 to $140. Apparently high-end dog collars are something of a cultural phenomenon.

Walk me through the collar-making process.

I actually tried to count all the steps one day, and after I got to 100, I decided that was enough. It takes more than 100 steps to make one collar—that should be impactful enough for anyone who questions our pricing. I personally drive to Napa every two weeks and pick hides. We buy half of a cow, basically. ... Weekly we go through the orders—we work three weeks out—and my prep guy makes all these different lengths based on neck sizes. He bevels them, dyes them and skives them, which is this thing with this razor blade that basically takes depth out of it. Otherwise it’s thick and chunky and might crack. It’s also just so thick—it’s like a neck-brace on dogs.

Then they’re decorated?

Right, they’re buckled and decorated.

Decorating is the most tedious aspect, but I’m really a freakazoid about the prep.

I’m probably freakier than most other companies. If there’s a waver in a bevel, I’m out. I’m done. I pull collars all the time and reject them and they go into a donation pile. We probably donate two a week.

If I see a cut, a scratch or some funky end, it goes into the pile.

Some of that decorating looks intense.

We get a lot of custom orders. People want crazy complicated collars. They don’t look that crazy, but they’re really crazy to do. I just sent out this collar with a shooting star pattern, but it was all upgraded with Swarovski crystals, with this really crazy name plate. It’s nerve-racking. If you make one wrong cut, the whole thing is over.

What’s the Karma Collars style?

looks like a hot mess, like a really bad craft project. I’m not gonna subject kitties to that.

Like refined, over-the-top. [Laughs] I want our stuff to have a refined elegance, but the customer for this type of product is really blingful—I know that’s not a word— the demand is really for the bling. I’m not a bling person; I like classic and understated.

I don’t like any color. So I try to balance the elegance of my personal taste with giving people what they want, which is just crazy with lots of bling. Refined, over-the-top.

And I want it to look custom, handmade, but not handmade in a messy, junky way.

But like a, “Where would you even get something like this? It must be some crazy boutique weirdo making this.”

In this artisan collar world, is there competition to get your collars onto celebrity dogs?

I assume you have dogs.

I have a pitbull and a pit-hound mix. I was doing pitbull rescue for years, but this place has been so busy. I can’t even foster right now—it’s like raising little fur-babies, you can’t let them out of your sight. This really is a passion of mine. I had a guy come in the other day, like, “Would you be interested in getting into vintage watches?”

He had these vintage watches with leather bands. They were gorgeous, really cool and the style was great, but my thing is dogs. I want to make dog collars forever.

No cat collars in the future, huh?

Nope. We’ve tried it, but our leather is so thick that the breakaways don’t work right.

They’re such flimsy, teeny, tiny plastic—we can’t even get the leather around it. Then we tried sewing the plastic in there and it just |

I haven’t done it yet. I’ve wondered if other companies do the celebrity dog marketing things. But I’m just astonished whenever I see pictures of these celebrity dogs, and they’re wearing these garbage, $3 collars from PetSmart. Like, what the heck? It’s been on my to-do list forever because come on, you’re high-profile, put something decent on your dog.

Oh. Who’s that?

Jerry Brown’s corgi.

Oh! We collar a ton of corgis. [Laughs] I don’t know what constitutes a celebrity in Sacramento. ... Really, I think this just isn’t on people’s radars. That’s why I never get competitive with other collar makers. I’m in the dog community constantly and I never run into dogs wearing nice collars—like never, ever, ever, ever, ever ... I feel like there are so many dogs to collar here and I can’t wait. Ω
