Earthquakes, the Middle East, Michael Brown—does your mind inflate when thinking about the world’s important stuff?

Thankfully there are sports. A lot of readers may call this country’s sports fanaticism pathetic. I won’t disagree. But the attraction is, like Woody Allen said in Annie Hall, physical. And unlike phenomenons of the natural, political and cultural worlds, the misery of sports is self-chosen.

So let’s get masochistic! It’s a great time of year. Baseball actually means something. Football’s just beginning. The Raiders haven’t lost yet!

Some predictions: My Oakland Raiders will not win more than five games. New quarterback Matt Schaub will be slower than Reggie McKenzie. Dennis Allen will be canned during the bye week. Occupy Oakland will eject Mark Davis from the building.

Across the bay, the Niners aren’t as good as you think. Their defense has jumped the shark. The team’s offensive shortcomings of last season will expand, like the universe, as young Alvy Singer might say. And wrap your mind around this: a Levi’s Stadium curse.

Denver and Arizona in the Super Bowl. Bet on it.

As for the world of juicy curveballs and sappy HGH spray, any self-respecting Giants fan (anyone?) knows their team is done. That’s what happens when you spend $38 million on two starting pitchers (who can’t pitch) and sign a pretty-boy shortstop (who scores at the club but strikes out when it matters).

Ergo, the infirm A’s, crawling into the stretch with an offense more anemic than my grandpa when his ulcer acts up. Some advice to fellow Oakland fans? Stop the bitching, we have pitching. And that will get us to the World Series, where we’ll revenge sweep the Dodgers.

That would also blow my mind.

To see it broken up into different pieces really just takes away from that unique diverse culture that we have.

I can get to Santa Cruz, San Francisco, wine country and Lake Tahoe with the drop of a hat. That is part of what makes California really beautiful and is why I will never move anywhere else.

Re “This is the story of a band� by Aaron Carnes (SN&R Arts&Culture, August 21): Wow: Tales of Terror! So much great info in this small article that I did not know. Around 1983 or 1984, I tried to go see Corrosion of Conformity in San Francisco. That show was sold-out, so my friend and I did not want to waste the night and went to see Tales of Terror. So glad I did, because what a show from a band I knew nothing about. Throughout my 27 years playing drums in my band, No Use for a Name, Tales of Terror was an influletter of ence all the way through. I never knew what happened to the week this band, but they stuck with me to this day. As with too many great bands, they have a horrible, unfortunate ending. I made an effort to see them two other times, and each time was great. The natural talent that made them original, everlasting, and very influential is rare, especially at that time. Thanks for the great article.

Re “On Ferguson� by Rachel Leibrock (SN&R Editor’s Note, August 21): We need to keep a clear perspective about the world. A black youth was killed by a white cop in Ferguson, Mo. I took note because I grew up in Webster Groves, a hop, skip and jump from Ferguson. Michael Brown was shot six times in broad daylight with his hands up. This seems a little excessive. There is so much confusion swirling around this incident, and we will have to wait till it all sorts out.

Then, in The New York Times, the front page showed a picture of total devastation in Gaza. One house left standing and 11,000 houses destroyed; nothing but rubble left.

Which story is more important? It’s all about perspective.

Feelings over facts?

Re “On Ferguson� by Rachel Leibrock (SN&R Editor’s Note, August 21): This editorial is an example of an editorial based on a “feelings, facts later� mindset. A mindset based on a slogan, such as “no facts, no peace.�

As more facts come out about the shooting of Michael Brown, there is evidence to support the police officer’s position, such as the officer’s alleged injuries. The fact that Brown had recently committed a felony gives evidence as to what he was thinking and feeling when confronted by a police officer, and suggests a possible motivation for violently confronting the officer.

The author of this editorial states, that as a white woman, “I’ll probably never know what it means to experience racism, to fear my safety because of the color of my skin.� Well, I certainly hope she never becomes a BEFORE

victim of any crime. But many white people do become victims of violent crimes, simply because of their race.

One could do a simple keyword search using the words “knockout game� to find evidence. Yet rather than being “hate crimes,� these are “hush crimes,� as the media does not report them.

Troubling view from SN&R? Re “Keep Midtown affordable�

(SN&R Editorial, August 14): I am troubled by the notion in your editorial that suggests that moving all the poor people into one place, however talented, is a good idea. It’s rather the idea of making ghettos, like Bed Stuy in New York City or East St. Louis. It’s also, given the socioeconomic makeup it would create, racist. Archie Bunker always told Edith [to] put them all in one place. That’s what you are proposing. What we need is balance, not overconcentration. Balance gives us the ability to have grocery stores and sit-down restaurants. Lack of balance in incomes results in what you see on Del Paso Boulevard: a more than 80 percent effective vacancy. The editorial in mention lobbied for more and continued affordable housing in Midtown, so that the lowincome artists and workers that made that neighborhood what it is today can continue living there. Not sure how that’s “racist� or “making ghettos.�

‘Public safety,’ American style Sacramento native shares his experience covering the events in Ferguson I arrived in Missouri around 9:30 on a Thursday night, five days after local police killed unarmed essay teenager Michael Brown, not knowing what and photos to expect. My colleagues and I immediately by drove from the airport to ground zero: a Sean Stout burned-down QuikTrip convenience store and gas station on West Florissant Avenue in the heart of Ferguson. People atop cars blared music, Brown supporters peacefully marched and chanted “Hands up! Don’t shoot!” Residents hung out in parking lots, laughing, talking, smoking, drinking. It was a block party.

“I’d rather they treated us as if we didn’t exist, because they treat us like we exist and they treat us like we’re nothing,” said Jarris Williams, a resident of a neighboring town, about the police. “Look at this. This is beautiful. I’ve never seen so many black people all in one place with no violence.”

On that night, hundreds of people grieved in their own way. A stark contrast from the images I’d seen on my computer screen one night prior. No violence. No police in sight.

Fast-forward 24 hours: I’m staring into my video camera’s LCD screen, recording protesters as they are held back from police by community leaders. Facing them is a line of cops armed with assault rifles and wearing heavy riot gear, flanked by armored vehicles. Snipers rest on a roof, all in a row.

All that night, police held their position, never intervening as looters destroyed local businesses. We fled the scene after hearing reports that some people were attacking white journalists. (As a white male, I would later decide that this makes sense, given the frustration and general distrust with the predominantly white media on the scene.)

The next day, Saturday afternoon, is calm. Local community members clean the streets and board up businesses. Everyone we interview condemns the looting and thanks us for covering their positive community efforts.

The governor issues a curfew for Saturday at midnight. Community organizers urge protesters to comply, but a small number stand their ground at the QuikTrip.

Police flood the streets, armed with tear gas, rubber bullets, bean bags, flash grenades, smoke bombs, wooden pellets and sonic canons as they advance up West Florissant.

The press is restricted to a cordoned-off area far away and we are told that if we leave the area, we will be arrested.

I hear a woman yell while running past, my own eyes struggling to make out her face due to the excruciating burn inflicted by the tear gas.

On Sunday night, we’re standing around in said press area. It is dusk when I hear a loud boom, then a tear-gas canister lands right next to me. Several more small explosions can be heard, intermixed with smaller pops: rubber bullets and bean bags.

Men, women, children, media—and even some police not lucky enough to be privy to their own department’s plan—scramble STORY

toward side streets in an attempt to distance themselves from a now-advancing force.

“They fired on press?!” I hear a woman yell while running, my own eyes struggling to make out her face due to the excruciating burn inflicted by the gas.

When we return to the press area, police hold assault rifles to our faces as we attempt to re-enter the scene. They claim the assault rifles are needed to ensure their safety. Safety from what? Four unarmed civilians wielding cameras and press badges?

I was the only white member of our four-man crew. A white, female journalist re-enters the area without issue. I’m even given unusually kind treatment just moments after police order one of our black team members to “Back up!” guns drawn, as he attempts to negotiate re-entry. I’m let through without an ID or press badge while my fellow colleagues have to cough up their credentials.

On Monday, CNN and Fox News report that Molotov cocktails were thrown at police, which incited the “blanket treatment” response to protesters. In the words of Missouri Highway Patrol Capt. Ronald Johnson, this was to “ensure the safety of law-enforcement officials.”

I don’t buy it. I was standing there with the Brown supporters, as was a lot of other media. None of us saw any Molotov cocktails.

Things change on Monday night: The police are present, but the armored vehicles are hidden. Police deal with individual offenders on a case-by-case basis, and no excessive force is used. (Of course, I am now biased when it comes to the term “excessive force.” By this point, a cop

with an assault rifle in riot gear not firing military-grade projectiles from a tank was considered peaceful.)

During my six days in Ferguson, residents kept asking for a dialogue with police. They wanted law enforcement patrolling their community to understand its culture. And, simply, they grieved for Michael Brown and asked for justice.

I didn’t feel like a journalist for a single second I was in Ferguson. I felt like a Brown supporter. I sided with the Ferguson organizers yearning for peace, racial equality and justice for the senseless murder of an unarmed youth.

And now, back in New York, I worry about a world where citizen journalism is more reliable than the news on television.

And a world where “police safety” takes priority over community safety. I can’t believe how many times I heard the term “police safety” used while in Ferguson—on the news, by the designated police spokesmen. We’re talking about individuals armed to the teeth with military-grade weapons and facing unarmed and outnumbered civilians? I am still trying to wrap my head around everything. I’m mad. America needs justice for Brown and a real conversation on the role of police. This country should be very concerned by the events in Ferguson.

Bike through the pain Sacramento woman battles arthritis on two wheels Some mornings, it’s all Charis Hill can do to pull herself from her bed. At the worst of times, the pain keeps her there all day.

The 27-year-old lives with a rare form of arthritis, called by Alastair Bland ankylosing spondylitis, that causes sometimes debilitating pain in the joints—especially the back—and weakens the immune system. The disease may worsen over time, slowly improve or do neither.

Hill has hardly let A.S. bring her down. She is training for a 200-mile team-relay run in September, goes backpacking and cycles to work. In part, she has a medication called Enbrel—which she injects weekly into her leg—to thank. It suppresses the inflammation and pain.

But nothing, perhaps, keeps Hill alive in spirit like riding a bicycle.

The act of moving Even on days when walking can help strengthen through her bedroom and kitchen and stretch muscles, cause agonizing pain, cycling invigorates and actually reduces inflammawhich helps to tion and subdues the pain.

“Some days it hurts just to lift support the joints my leg over the bike, but once I’m and reduce pain. moving, I feel better almost immediately,” she said.

Hill can’t always go very far. Her daily commute to work at the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates is just a mile-and-a-half each way, and a recent 30-mile ride pushed Hill to her very limit. Still, riding a bike is her miracle drug.

She called cycling “freedom.”

Movement as a remedy for arthritis pain is not news to the medical world. Wade Balmer, a regional director with the Arthritis Foundation, said the act of moving can help strengthen and stretch muscles, which helps to support the joints and reduce pain. He said poor posture may also exacerbate the discomfort of arthritis.

“Exercise strengthens the muscles and ligaments around the bones and joints, thus putting less pressure on the actual joint/bone and translating into less pain,” Balmer said via email. He called exercise “a top-tier treatment for arthritis,” adding that it must be balanced with rest and medication.

Though Hill works for SABA, she isn’t as concerned about the political aspects of cycling as much as she is about the more personal ones.

“Almost no matter what kind of injury someone has, anyone can ride a bike,” she said. People with Parkinson’s disease, though they lose some control of their muscles, can ride a bike, Hill said. “People without legs can ride a bike.”

According to Balmer, about 50 million Americans suffer from arthritis, and fewer than 3 million have A.S. Hill wants to connect with these people, encouraging them through her story to remain active in spite of what can seem like a hopeless state of pain. Last winter, Hill launched a local support group for people with A.S. that meets on the second Thursday of each month.

For a person restricted in movement, Hill sees driving a car as a waste of time and opportunity. She wants to move, not be moved by a vehicle.

“Driving isolates you,” Hill said. “I’d rather spend my time doing something that improves health. The way I see it, I have a limited time in this world, and I don’t want to close myself away from the world around me by being in a car.” Ω

It smells like a vacuum exploded.

The sounds are a smorgasbord of excavators and loaders, but it’s surprisingly not all that deafening.

Instead, it’s a gentle hum amid the already tranquil downtown din, something that could coo a frustrated Kings fan to sleep.

In case you hadn’t noticed, demolition of the mall and construction of the Kings’ new home is underway and evident.

L Street west of Seventh is one lane during the late evening, and is backed up with only two lanes of traffic during commuter hours.

The southwestern most piece of the old mall—you know, the building that once housed the Pre-Flite Lounge—is completely gone (see aerial photo, above). The BEFORE

surrounding buildings, some of which are visible from the street, are naked. Inside the plaza, there’s a viewing window revealing the old mall as a gutted wonder.

As of this past Tuesday, August 26, the Macy’s building and 515 L Street is gone. By September, all the buildings that are planned for demolition will be rubble, according to the Kings.

The Entertainment & Sports Complex team says it delivered the “largest excavator on the West Coast” last week to tear down the last of the buildings.

Meanwhile, on Fifth Street facing west, some of the final remnants of the former mall still persist, including ceramic tile art by the Hans Sumpf Company. These pieces are more than 40 years old; the designers who manufactured them no longer even produce the artworks.

Some of these panels have been removed, but more remain. What will be their fate? Will these admittedly small yet memorable tokens of the mall of yore still have a place in Sacramento?

Shelly Willis, who heads up the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, says that a bunch of the Hans Sumpf tiles have been stored away. They were mortared to the building, and she explained that it was “intense” removing, numbering, mapping and stocking the fragile pieces. “It’s a delicate process,” she said.

The panels—rectangular brown reliefs that appeared along J, Fifth and Fourth streets—aren’t actually considered works of art. They were originally considered design features for the mall, Willis explained. Over time, however, their aesthetic value evolved, and she is saving what she thinks are the best panels.

“I’m confident that these tiles will reappear in some form in a public place at some point in the future,” she said.

“I’m excited about their next life.” Ω

With 49 different languages spoken in students’ homes, the Twin Rivers Unified School District faces a perennial challenge in communicating with families. Earlier this year, the district appointed Yolanda Mayoral Falkenberg to the newly created position of family and community involvement coordinator to address that and other difficulties.

Historically, language resources in the district have been all but inaccessible. Most resources are available in only three non-English languages—Spanish, Russian and Hmong— and requests for translation services require a wait of up to two weeks. Falkenberg promised to “work on a solution,” she said via email. “I would hate to exclude folks from fully engaging due to a language barrier.”

Full family engagement is what the district is after with this fall’s launch of Parent University. In conjunction with various community organizations, parents will be able to take classes about topics like conflict resolution, cultural awareness and ways to promote positive change in their own neighborhoods.

Trustee Bob Bastian said that “four different educational cultures” collided when four area districts consolidated into TRUSD in 2008, and that the new board needed to “send a message that we are really sincere that we want to reach out to the community.”

Parent University, which will initially be tailored to meet the needs of 10 campuses, will also integrate into its classes tools for strengthening the family unit.

“All the research on parental involvement and engagement shows that the parent is instrumental in the child’s success,” Falkenberg said, adding that the district will work to help families access Common Core State Standards, even if the parents don’t have solid academic backgrounds themselves. One of every five TRUSD parents lacks a high-school diploma.

TRUSD has been riddled with legal and financial problems from its inception, but Falkenberg said she wants to “look at the past as a learning experience.” (Brooke Purves)

Prison pregnancy scares State lawmakers sought last week to guard California’s female prison population from penitentiary doctors who treated them like guinea pigs.

On August 19, the state Senate unanimously passed a bill that would end “forced or coerced sterilizations” in California prisons. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara), came about as a result of coverage last year by The Center for Investigative Reporting.

CIR’s investigation found “[d]octors under contract with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation sterilized nearly 150 female inmates from 2006 to 2010 without required state approvals.”

Department spokesman Jeffrey Callison told SN&R via email that the bill “would prohibit sterilization for the purpose of birth control, and prohibit any means of sterilization of an inmate except when required for the immediate preservation of life.”

If signed by the governor, the bill would also add a section to the penal code requiring a secondary doctor outside of the corrections facility to consult with the patient and ensure she’s made aware of the permanence of the surgery.

Senate Bill 1135 was authored in “response to media reports from the Center for Investigative Reporting” regarding the “unlawful and coercive sterilization of female inmates at the Central California Women’s Facility and Valley State Prison for Women,” states a release from Sen. Jackson’s office.

S.B. 1135 had numerous co-authors, including the Legislative Women’s Caucus and the chair and vice-chair of the Senate Public Safety Committee.

Unpopular fights One of Grantland Johnson’s final acts was against ‘strong mayor’ The first thing this reporter noticed about Grantland Johnson was his handshake—one of those oldschool, thumb-clasping, multipart deals, which hinted that California’s secretary of Health and Welfare was a little different from the other honchos standing around at that press conference, whatever it was for.

Johnson was different, as many of us ArVin G recalled last week after hearing the sad O SM CO by news that he had died at age 65. He was cosmog@ newsrev iew.c om a Sacramento City Council member, the first African-American to hold the post of Sacramento County supervisor, a champion for civil rights and for working people.

He also had a rare willingness to take on unpopular fights and remarkable foresight. He got elected to the board of supervisors with the backing of Sacramento’s big developers, as supervisors generally do. But by 1992, he was railing against suburban sprawl and developer influence, and predicting the county’s growth policies would worsen economic and social segregation. He was right-on, of course.

Ten years ago, Johnson broke with his buddies in Sacramento’s political establishment by campaigning against Measure A, the transportation sales tax that Johnson predicted would shortchange mass transit and encourage sprawl. Right again.

One of the last things he did in his public life was to sign his name to the ballot argument against Measure L, the “strong mayor” initiative backed by Mayor Kevin Johnson and his allies, on the ballot this fall. Johnson’s gone, but he’s still fighting the fight.

Of the five seats on the Sacramento Municipal Utility District board of trustees up for election this November, only one of them will actually be decided by voters. Elections were canceled when no one showed up to oppose incumbent board members Rob Kerth, Genevieve Shiroma and Bill Slaton. Likewise, community activist Dave Tamayo will join the board unopposed, because no one else bothered to fill out the paperwork. Ratepayers (and other registered voters) in the Arden area will have three SMUD candidates to choose from this fall.

Why is it that SMUD districts of more than 200,000-plus residents can’t muster up more than one candidate? Lack of public awareness? Barriers too high for folks without money and political connections to run?

There’s something troubling about canceled elections.

On the other hand, thank goodness no one wants to run for the SMUD board. The board made the news back when people were fighting over the Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station, when rates were rising, the workforce was demoralized and the board was dysfunctional.

Then came the S. David Freeman era. The Stetson-wearing general manager from the Tennessee Valley turned SMUD around but pissed off quite a few people in the process.

Effective, though. Twenty years ago, Freeman handed off the GM gig to lawyer Jan Schori, and it’s been smooth—if somewhat boring— sailing ever since. SMUD is quietly recognized for its efficient system of “policy governance,” high customer-satisfaction rankings and low rates. Earlier this year, SMUD counsel Arlen Orchard succeeded GM John Di Stasio, and no one noticed. That’s a sign of success. So, hooray for canceled elections?

Not sure when gas stations started being considered “transit-oriented development.”

A quick follow-up on a recent column about the suburbanization of Curtis Park. Right on time comes a report in the Sacramento Business Journal that Curtis Park Village developer Paul Petrovich has confirmed he will build a new Safeway, Pet Extreme and gas station as retail tenants anchoring the important infill project. Petrovich told the journal there’s a “deficit” of grocery stores in the area, and there’s a “real demand” for these tenants.

Well, let’s see: There’s a Raley’s supermarket on Freeport Boulevard less than a mile from the Petrovich site. There’s a Mercado Loco grocery store about half-a-mile away, though that will be closed next year to put in a CVS Pharmacy. Petrovich’s gas station would be less than half-a-mile from a Shell station to the east and less than half-a-mile from yet another gas station to the west. Never mind this is supposed to be an urban-infill site—built next to a lightrail station. Not sure when gas stations started being considered “transit-oriented development.” There is also already a Pet Extreme about a quarter-mile away in the suburban strip mall Petrovich built on Sutterville Road.

Now, there are in fact neighborhoods in Sacramento that have no grocery stores at all and really do need them. Like the empty lot off Del Paso Boulevard, where a few years ago Petrovich promised to build a Fresh and Easy store. The Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency even made a $2 million loan to help it happen. But the store was never built. The neighborhood still has no grocery outlets, and the last Bites heard, Fresh and Easy never repaid the loan.

That’s what you call a grocery-store deficit.

Curtis Park? Not so much. Ω

RIP Grantland Johnson September 29, 1948- August 19, 2014 Former Sacramento City Council member, Sacramento County supervisor, regional director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and California Secretary of Health and Human Services Grantland Lee Johnson died last week.

But the several hundred people gathered at Antioch Progressive Church on Saturday were there not to celebrate the officeholder, but the man. A very special man.

Gathered at the church were dozens of Johnson’s highschool and elementary-school friends who grew up with him in “the Heights.” They played football with him, were on the debating team with him and were part of his life for half-aThe prince of Del Paso century, until the end of his life.

Also gathered at the Heights, a mentor church were the Sacramento for the powerful and progressive political elite who powerless. also clearly loved Johnson.

Phil Serna, Phil Isenberg, Bill Camp, Kimberly Mueller and others spoke. They all told different stories, but they all had the same theme: Grantland Johnson was special.

A high-school friend who is now a minister, Alan Rowe, said that as a young boy he wanted to be like Johnson. That is why he joined the high-school debate team. Johnson’s high-school friends as well as his political colleagues all wanted to be more like him.

I too wanted to be more like Johnson. As a Sacramento Habitat for Humanity board member, I was organizing Habitat home builds and encouraging different religious groups to come together to provide the money and labor to build a house. We would match up Latter-day Saints with In August 2010, Sikhs, or Trinity Episcopal Church with the Center for SN&R CEO Jeff Praise Ministries. When talking with him, not only majority owner of the News & Review would I get good information, but he also let me spend newspapers in some time in his world. A world I would love to live in.

This Modern World

Ferguson’s lessons Let’s start with the tragedy: Ferguson police’s killing of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown. Under no circumstances can we imagine a situation in which death is an appropriate penalty for jaywalking or even, if the police account is to be believed, assaulting an officer. The shooting of Brown is unconscionable. It should be fully investigated by outside agencies—not the Ferguson Police Department or the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office—and full transparency must occur if any sort of law-enforcement trust is to be regained.

But in addition to the killing of Brown (and the disrespect with which his death was treated by Ferguson police, including allowing his body to lie in the street for hours and the release of a video that was irrelevant to the shooting), there are other issues raised by what’s happened in this St. Louis suburb.

The story of America Brown was one of an average 400 Americans who are killed by has always been one local police departments every of discrimination and year. The incidence of police shooting suspects—and bystandracial abuse. We are ers—is simply unacceptable. It a long way from being demands that we examine “use of force” policies, police training and post-racial. civilian-review boards throughout the United States.

The situation in Ferguson itself also needs to be publicly scrutinized. St. Louis County’s lengthy history of both de facto segregation and also police abuse of power must be investigated. Ferguson’s recent history of using fines from traffic and misdemeanor convictions as a major source of city funding, as well as a system that prevents full civic engagement by black voters, also cannot continue.

And let’s not forget the issue that caused gasps from so many of us as we watched live feeds and news coverage: the use of military hardware and tactics on American citizens who were engaging, up to the point of intervention by the police, in nonviolent protest.

Under no circumstances can we imagine a situation in which armored vehicles with machine-gun turrets are necessary for local policing.

Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri has pledged to hold congressional hearings on this militarization of local police departments, a federal policy that has been in place since the mid-1990s. We applaud this but also urge our readers to hold local officials’ feet to the fire on this issue. Like racism, the militarization of local police departments is a national issue.

There is no doubt that many people in Sacramento feel much the same as the protesters in Ferguson. The one burden that we must all shoulder is our history of institutionalized racism, one that has led to white overrepresentation in government, in education and in business.

To quote Nobel Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison, “we stand waist deep in the toxin of our past.”

The story of America has always been one of discrimination and racial abuse. It has gotten better, especially in the last half-century, but we are a long way from being post-racial.

It is our duty to say “No more.” No more dead unarmed black youths, no more isolating and demeaning our citizens through the use of abusive policing, no more executing civilians without benefit of due process.

The government—whether in Sacramento or in Ferguson—is operating in our name. Ω

People love him.

Others love to hate him.

How does MSA deal with life as Sacramento’s top TV celebrity? Here’s a window into the workaholic’s world.

Sometimes Mark S. Allen forgets to pull out his in-ear monitor after shooting his early-morning TV show. It makes him even more recognizable, like during a recent lunch break at his favorite taco spot, La Rosa Taqueria in West Sacramento.

Someone notices him while he’s talking to the owner near the cash register.

“You’re Mark S. Allen, from TV, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Hey, my wife loves watching you on, uh, that show.”

It’s a half-compliment, but Allen confirms: Yes, he’s that guy. Other times, when he’s out with co-workers, strangers will pull up a chair and start chatting with him like they already know him. That’s the good part about his “celebrity,” says Allen. He gets to make new friends in real life merely because of the sheer “power of the broadcast.”

On the flip side, there are the haters. The Now 100.5 FM deejay and Good Day Sacramento star already knows what they think of him—and he’s a step ahead of the game. Allen is quick to dish out self-deprecating zingers.

“My life’s been one big bad haircut choice after the other,” he says. “I’m both a has-been and a never-was all wrapped up into one.”

Joking aside, Allen’s neither of those things. He’s an Emmy Award winner. He’s hosted a handful of successful shows on national TV, including Mark at the Movies. He’s arguably Sacramento’s foremost local celebrity.

That’s why pretty much every week, he’s helping out at a fundraiser or charity event of some sort— for free. And that’s also why it was kind of a big deal the few times he did genuinely stupid things, his DUI arrest in 2006, for example. Then there was that 2007 interview with Janet Jackson and Tyler Perry, when Allen admits he acted like a jerk. Perry dissed Allen on his blog, it went viral, and the incident resulted in thousands of angry emails.

In person, however, the real Mark S. Allen is an authentically nice guy, a father of three with a heavy work addiction and serious love for his adopted home of Sacramento.

He’s even come to terms with the fact that people think he sucks.

“Who knows? If I hadn’t gone a lifetime with on occasion having someone shout out in public ‘You suck!’ maybe I would be one of those guys shouting ‘You suck!’” Allen says after quickly polishing off four carne asada tacos. “Maybe it made me a better person.

“I mean, I could be douchier.”

Minutes ago, at 5 a.m. on a recent weekday morning, Allen was supposed to be live on-air. Instead, he was speeding from the Now 100.5 radio station, where he’d been recording promos since 4 in the morning.

Later in the afternoon, during the time he’s usually on the radio, he’ll instead be in Los Angeles interviewing Megan Fox for a future Mark at the Movies episode. On the flight, he’ll take a nap. He’s happy to take any sleep he can get. He’ll then begin his interview with the actress

by making fun of himself, noting that his look over the years has alternated somewhere between Eminem, David Bowie and Annie Lennox.

But now, back at Good Day a few minutes after 5 a.m., Allen grabs a quick cup of coffee, his first of the day. Off camera, he jokes that the amount of coffee he consumes could probably kill a horse.

Most of Sacramento is probably still asleep, but Allen puts his earpiece in and a smile on. He makes his co-workers laugh, both on and off camera.

“I think he’s really funny. I think he’s totally cheesy. And I love it— I love every single part of it,” says Sacramento Comedy Spot owner and Mark at the Movies co-star Brian Crall. “He’s there to entertain, and he does a good job. He makes everybody he interviews look good all the time.”

At 8 a.m., after another coffee break (Starbucks), he drives to a house in Rio Linda, where a camera guy meets up with him, and he interviews an uncouth old man for a segment about the man’s extensive backyard model-train track. At first, this seems like a difficult live shot: The old man can’t remember his somewhat obscene Wi-Fi password, seven cats roaming around in the yard, and the trains actually move pretty slow—not really the type of action shot that makes for good live TV. But with a quarterback’s quick thinking, Allen improvises and saves the segment. After figuring out the wireless password (it’s “twoboobs”), he duct tapes his iPhone to the front of a model train for an action shot, makes a joke about a cat that’s fallen asleep on the train track, and describes the man as simply a “fascinating” character.

Allen himself admits to being an awkward character.

He grew up in a Texas town obsessed with football—Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream was written about his high-school team—but the shy, young Allen didn’t play sports. He watched a lot of TV, mainly adult shows like The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, The Bob Newhart Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

“Growing up in a town like Odessa, Texas, when you have the magic of Hollywood coming in on this little box, feeling like an outcast, it was like my portal to another world,” he says.

Knowing he wanted to do some sort of entertaining when he grew up, he started working for a local radio station as a teenager and quickly made a name for himself—quite literally— in radio. He changed his name early on from Mark Allen Stell to Mark S. Allen, because “I didn’t want those guys in high-school football knowing that I was the guy on the radio.”

In college, he studied theater arts, transferring from Texas Wesleyan University to California State University, San Bernardino to UCLA and finally to Sacramento State University, where he finished his degree. All the while, he continued working radio jobs, hoping somehow to parlay that into television.

A big break came in 1988. Allen was a deejay at KSFM 102.5 FM. To raise awareness and funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, he agreed to live 24-seven on a billboard for a month.

Fast-forward to the third night.

Local drunks come by to harass him at 2 in the morning.

“Hey, Mark Allen, you’re not really up there, are you?” he hears.

“Yeah, I am.”

“Well, come out,” says the voice.

Allen crawls out of a tent onto the billboard platform. The drunks yank on a rope attached to a donation bucket. Allen, who happens to be standing on the rope, tumbles down off the billboard. He breaks bones in both legs and feet and suffers a concussion.

The first people to come to his aid are members of the Encina High School football team. They happened to be driving by and see his gruesome fall. In his concussed stupor, Allen asks them to carry him back up on the billboard, crumpled legs and all, so he can keep the fundraiser alive.

But the next day, Allen says, word gets out to his employers that “he’s out there mangled.” That he’s going to die.

Rebirth—and transgressions On a recent weekday afternoon, Allen takes a seat in Now 100.5’s deejay booth. He grabs headphones, slides a volume dial on the soundboard, pulls a microphone toward his face. He’s here until 6 p.m. every day, three hours of answering

phones, giving away tickets and reading the station’s promotions live on-air.

“Now 100.5, sending you to one of the biggest summer concerts. Who’s it going to be: Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Kings of Leon? Next shot to win, just before 7,” he says in his radio voice.

Off air, he puts down the headphones, responds to a text message and checks his email.

Two years ago, he had the Good Day scheduling software installed on a computer at the radio station, so he can prep for the next day’s show during his radio downtime.

The guy is on all the time, from at least 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.

But he probably shouldn’t even be alive and working his ass off here in Sacramento.

The day after he fell off the billboard in ’88, the local American River Fire Department rushed out and took him to the hospital. But after getting casts, he still insisted upon returning to the top.

“I didn’t want this thing to fail, because we’d made a lot of noise about me living up there for a month,” he says. “I made them put me back up on there, not because I felt like a hero, but because I felt like an idiot for falling off.”

It was a slow news week, so local television stations started televising his stunt. CBS Evening News picked up the story. Then Allen got a call from a San Francisco-based producer who’d seen the news coverage. The producer asked if Allen had a radio segment that could translate to TV. “I do a segment on the radio called ‘Dateless and Desperate,’ where I set people up who call in and say they’ve had a crush on someone; and I make them confront that person,” Allen said.

Soon enough, Allen was shooting “Dateless and Desperate” for a teen show called Scratch, co-hosted by another Sacramento native, Lisa Ling.

With Ling’s help, Allen hired an agent, who found him a gig on a nascent Comedy Central network show called Short Attention Span Theater, replacing comedians Jon Stewart and Patty Rosborough as host in 1993. He also relocated to New York and got married (he and his wife, Jennette, have been together ever since) during his years on the show.

The only problem was that the show’s writers kept telling Allen he sucked.

“Every stand-up comedian in New York wanted that gig,” he says. “And then when this yahoo that’s never done standup—who’s never done live TV before—gets the gig, they had every reason to hate me.”

After nearly two years, Allen agreed to leave the show and came back to Sacramento, where in 1996 a friend helped him get a job at Good Day. As the show’s entertainment anchor, Allen became the local

He became a household name in Sacramento over the next decade, until an “unfocused part of my life” turned into a pair of major public faux pas.

First, in 2006, he was arrested for a DUI after having a couple mid-afternoon glasses of wine, he says. Embarrassed, Allen quickly tried to make something positive out of the situation. He filmed a segment where he apologized and had his arresting officer pour glasses of wine and put them on the a hood of a car to show how much wine it takes to put someone over the limit.

But a few weeks later, The Sacramento Bee’s Sam McManis brought it up again. “[T]his is absolutely embarrassing,” McManis quotes Allen in the story.

“The thing that disappointed me the most about the Sam thing was that it wasn’t breaking news that he was sharing,” says Allen.

“I had already apologized to Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

I did a segment on the air where I had copped to all of it. That was a tough time. Sam couldn’t stand me. I don’t know why.”

Things got more difficult still in 2007.

During an interview with Janet Jackson and Tyler Perry to promote the film Why Did I Get Married?, Allen asked about Jackson’s infamous Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction,” which had occurred about three years earlier. Jackson didn’t want to talk about it, but he made another joke about it, and Jackson and Perry ended the interview noticeably pissed off. Perry then posted a video of the interview gone wrong on his website, and it went viral among his passionate fan base. In the week that followed, Allen and Good Day’s producers received thousands of hate emails.

“People were saying, ‘He’s a racist,’ and that was really, really saddening,” said Allen. “I mean, it simply wasn’t true; I was just being goofy, and I wanted to ask about the Justin Timberlake thing.”

A week after the incident, he made an on-air apology (“I was a jerk,” he said, “and I apologize”). But the Mark S. Allenhating bandwagon was set in motion, and a different type of bad publicity kept coming.

Around the same time as the Jackson interview, in an article titled “The FeelGood Movie Blurb Credit of the Year,” Washington Post staff writer Paul Farhi criticized Allen as a film critic whose reviews exist simply to be repurposed as advertisements. McManis followed that up with another Bee story carrying the headline “Mark S. Allen: Confirmed ‘Blurb Whore.’” About a year later, someone wrote an article on the movie-review website eFilmCritic titled “Mark S. Allen – Don’t You Have A Soul?”

Meanwhile, Allen was on his way to winning multiple Emmy Awards.

Redemption in self-deprecation There is a tongue-in-cheek video montage of celebrities making fun of Allen. It’s a promo reel for Mark at the Movies.

“Hi, this is Matt Damon. I would never watch Mark at the Movies even if my life depended on it,” it starts.

“I don’t know Mark, and if I ever met him, I probably wouldn’t like him,” says Denzel Washington.

“Mark at the Movies is vile trash,” adds Robert Downey Jr. A bit later on that day, he makes a crack himself: “Mark at the Movies would be so much better with 90 percent less Mark,” he says.

Allen has been trying to make it less about him ever since the idea for the show came up back in 2009. Newsrooms and staff at local television stations were hit hard by the recession, he says. Kevin Walsh, vice president of CBS, asked him if he had any ideas on how to raise revenue during hours that the station wasn’t producing Good Day. He pitched the idea of creating a show about movies based on an old 1999 pilot he shot for Paramount Television. Walsh agreed, and Allen shot a new pilot.

Mark at the Movies first aired locally, but then executives from Reelz network saw it and bought the rights to run it. It won two Emmys in 2010 and a third in 2011. In its third year, Allen retooled the format, bringing in a panel to talk about and review movies.

That transition led to Sacramento Comedy Spot owner Crall being cast as a panelist earlier this year. Allen caught Crall performing at the Comedy Spot and “after seeing me onstage, that was like my audition for the show,” says Crall.

“He knows that I’m fast on my feet.

I’m not as good as him at being able to turn something into nothing, but I think he relies on me to be there and observe what’s going on and comment on it,” he says. “It was really weird, because I used to listen to him on the radio.”

In fact, things have now come full circle for Allen, since he returned to radio in 2011.

That was when KZZO 100.5 FM, which is owned by CBS, changed formats from being marketed as “The Zone” to “Now 100.5.” Its new program director, Chad Rufer, organized a focus group to see how to improve the station. He invited about 20 women in. Allen’s name came up, so CBS just stuck him into an afternoon slot.

“His show is extremely popular—it’s certainly one of the top two afternoon-drive shows on the market with adult females,” says Rufer. “He’s been a big part of this radio station’s success. Together, as part of our team, we took a radio station that was 12th and moved it up to a No. 2 position for the last couple of years.”

Back in the deejay booth on a recent afternoon, Allen says that he’ll even sometimes get to make on-air quips at another celebrity deejay to whom he often gets compared: Ryan Seacrest.

“I always talk about him begrudgingly on the air, but truth be told, I have nothing but respect for him,” Allen says. “He’s one of the best businessmen in the industry; he’s good on the air, too. He’s consistent.”

And, Allen adds, he’s fun to poke Ω fun at.

William Burg Wasn’t Born here, but he’s as much of a native son to Sacramento as anyone. Born in Skokie, Ill., he moved to the area in 1973 after his father was accepted to UC Davis.

The family circled the city’s perimeter, from Dixon to Citrus Heights, but Burg—who studied history at Humboldt State University—didn’t live in Sacramento proper until he moved to Midtown in 1993.

Burg still lives in Midtown, and over the years has written several books on Sacramento history including Sacramento’s K Street: Where Our City Was Born and Sacramento Renaissance: Art, Music and Activism in California’s Capital City.

His latest effort puts the lens squarely on the central city. Midtown Sacramento: Creative Soul of the City (The History Press, $19.99) is a detailed study of the grid that covers both its geographical and cultural evolution. Burg, who will sign copies of the book this Thursday at Time Tested Books, took a break from his day job as a historian with the California Department of Parks and Recreation to meet up at Adamo’s, a Midtown cafe located just steps away from the first place he called home. It’s just a stone’s throw, incidentally, from his current digs. Native son, indeed.

Yeah, that was the first time I came here on my own. I would take the bus [and] go record shopping [or for] comic books. My aunt lived down here, and she was involved in the local music scene, … going to the Oasis Ballroom and Sam’s Hof Brau … and she’d show me around: “Here’s Cheap Thrills, here’s Java City, here’s Gelato Robi.” All these places that were completely outside of my experiences.

One of the things that really struck me was a book that I picked up earlier, Neo-Bohemia, about Wicker Park in Chicago. It showed there’s this demographic change that happened in the 20th century: The number of artists per capita tripled, that meant that, in the early part of the 20th century, you only got these bohemian districts in cities that were large enough to have a sizable concentration of artists. ... But as time went on in the 20th century, there’s more and more artists per capita, which means there’s more and more potential for these artistic neighborhoods to emerge, and that’s really what we see in Midtown—the emergence of an artistic capital. In some ways that’s because … there’s more of an artistic middle class. And while they’re still criminally underrepresented, there are more opportunities for participation of nonwhites in the worlds of arts and creative endeavors. And for women. And that meant all of a sudden, there are more potential artists, and they share that common bond of art, so there becomes opportunity to see this scene emerge. For many reasons, [however], it isn’t really recognized by the region as a whole or outside Sac, [and] it’s often overlooked. People tell me Sacramento doesn’t have any culture. who says that?

I heard that growing up. I hear that from people who aren’t from Sacramento, but I also hear that from Sacramentans. “Oh, it’s a cultural vacuum.” It’s partially because there aren’t the long-standing institutions of white, bourgeois culture. We don’t have the 100-year-old opera house.

We have an extraordinarily rich cultural tradition, but it tends to be working-class culture, it tends to be nonwhite culture, and thus it tends to be overlooked.

when you moved here In 1993, where dId you lIve? At P and Q, in a punk house. … Rent was $125 a month. ... I was working 20 hours a week, I went to four or five punk shows a week, and spent 40 hours a week hanging out at No Jive Java, Java City, The Weatherstone, Capitol Garage.

how dId you decIde on the hIstorIans for your book?

There are plenty of people I wish I had interviewed, but there wasn’t time. Or in some cases, for the last book, I’d scheduled an interview with [Royal Chicano Air Force member, artist and poet] José Montoya the day before he went into the hospital and then passed away. I interviewed Esteban Villa in part because I hadn’t had an in-person interview with a member of the RCAF, and Esteban was such an enormous part of that.

[Sacramento preservationist] Brooks Truitt was another person I’d planned on interviewing, and then he passed away this summer.

what was the experIence lIke? It was kind of a nexus. … There was always something going on downstairs—bands practicing and forming in the basement and occasionally shows happening in the basement.

Yes, they’re migratory, they’re temporary, they happen largely to people who encounter them. It’s a lot easier to find out about stuff these days. It’s partly why I’m interested in this room [Adamo’s] in particular, because it used to be Webber’s Book Shop, and then it was Cafe Neo. When I first moved here, I lived a block away. This is where I started going to local poetry readings and met people like Bari Kennedy and Michael Grosse. | A R T S & C U L T U R E

It’s InterestIng to thInk of the lIves of creatIve spaces In sacramento.

Part of that temporary nature is inherent to the culture. Things change, uses change, old buildings like this are the most usable for cultural uses. It’s not necessarily historical buildings—not the vintage buildings that are lovingly restored and sell for a million bucks now, but just plain old, cheap old buildings. Some of the most exciting things in the city are happening in probably the least lovable places— those old ’70s boxes. Look at Verge [Center for the Arts], look at Witch Room. … That was really the joy of going [doing research] and finding verification of stuff I’d heard about secondhand, about really ersatz places like the Stucco Factory, places like 14th and R—it was a gallery space, and Jerry Perry used to do shows there in the late 1980s. dId anythIng In your research surprIse you?

One of the things I’d always heard was that the basis of the preservation movement was the demolition of the Alhambra Theatre, and to some extent, the efforts to save Old Sacramento. But that’s a little different from why the Sacramento Old City Association formed.

Things like Alhambra Theatre and Old Sacramento tend to be more of the celebratory uses of history, the idea that historical buildings are here primarily to interpret the past and as kind of high-value artistic spaces or educational spaces—rather than functional spaces. But SOCA formed [because of] housing, it was about being able to buy a house in this neighborhood and fix it. … The goals were to find a way for banks to provide conventional home loans … inexpensive housing, affordable housing. It was all about how do you repopulate a downtown whose life has been halved? A lot of the people who started [SOCA] weren’t longtime Sacramentans … [but] they knew was that there was a downtown that was effectively vacant and they wanted to bring people back, and the easiest way to do that was to buy houses and fix them up. … It’s about the viability of a neighborhood as an economic space—not as a museum with a rope around it.

In your research, dId you develop an affInIty for any one part of mIdtown— past or present?

One surprising thing that struck me as being really cool, were the coffee shops that are no longer around. And the best, the one that I never saw, was Eye Dream Cafe. It was on 21st and L [streets], where there’s now a |

parking lot. It was open from 1992 to 1994. Along with The Weatherstone, it was the first place that had outside seating. And while Weatherstone, I guess, catered to more of a hippie crowd, Eye Dream was a punk hangout. They would have bands and poetry readings and late nights. …

But it was demolished to create that parking lot, because the insurance company across the street felt like it needed more parking. … And that’s the irony, that the parking lot is hopefully going to go away to create new housing and Whole Foods, which is a different evolution of Midtown. Being turned back to where we’re suddenly spending a lot of money and effort rebuilding buildings that are functionally what we were tearing down 20 years ago. what are your thoughts on whole foods goIng Into mIdtown?

Banks won’t lend money for something that big unless it’s something they feel good about. If you want to open a coffeehouse or a small indie record store, you need an old building.

New buildings require old uses— things you know are going to provide significant, dependable income. …

[Banks] are looking for something corporate, a large company that’s not going to fold. … I don’t think every new business in Midtown has to cater to me. I probably won’t go there ... but we’re probably at a point where people do want to shop there.

Is mIdtown stIll a place for young creatIves and artIsts?

“Creatives” is a broad category.

There’s a difference between artists and people who are poets and actors and painters and what you call creatives who are very often using a similar skill set but for different aims. so let’s narrow the questIon: Is there room for people lIvIng In a punk house?

The punk house is still there. They just charge twice as much, so $250 a month instead of $125. There’s always room, because the part of the thing about a city, even within a neighborhood, there are areas of ascendance and decline. The expectation that it will all be uniform is a suburban expectation. Suburbs you can build 1,000 units, and they’re all the same age, and they all decay at the same rate. The joy of an urban neighborhood, there are buildings that are brand-new, there are buildings that are 120 years old, there is a variety of affordability, block by block. ar too often, we see and hear about people who are suffering from drug and/ or alcohol addiction in the media. But every day, people are getting better. Recovery Happens is a statewide campaign celebrating the lives of people who are in recovery during National Recovery Month in September.

Recovery Happens was first organized 22 years ago by The California Association of Addiction Recovery Resources (CAARR), a

So, how does this pizza shop, now resting in the husk of Tuli Bistro, fare?

To be frank, not well.

The Caesar salad was the highlight of the evening. Generously buried under Grana Padano cheese were plenty of crispy-on-theoutside-chewy-on-the-inside croutons and rating: classic Caesar dressing H The pizza dough is cooked well: decent chew, crispy crust, just the right amount of dinner for one: charring. However, it lacks any real flavor. $15 - $20 No sour. No salt. No nothing. It’s the Wonder Bread of pizza dough—white, sterile, flavorless.

Trick Pony’s tomato sauce is equally disappointing. With a flavor profile akin to a watered-down tomato soup, it lacks even the faintest zing or subtlety of sweetness that one expects from a tomato. Oregano? Garlic? Salt?

Heck, even a good squeeze of tomato paste would beat some life into the poor thing.

I will give props to the restaurant’s consisH tent use of creamy buffalo mozzarella and flawed Grana Padano, which is one of the finest Italian HH hard cheeses available (it’s similar to Parmesan haS momentS but saltier and nuttier in flavor). No corners cut HHH cheesewise, and servings are generous. appealing Pizzas are served precut or in a tear-and-go HHHH method, where the unsliced pie is served with a authoritative knife. Diners cut and rip chunks of pizza away HHHHH from the whole. It’s supposed to be amusing, epic I guess, but we all found ourselves struggling with it, leaving behind toppings on the plate and knocking over glasses.

The Tonno e Cipolla pizza seemed like the most unique option. Our waiter cheered the oil-packed tuna, flavored with lemon and basil and paired with red onions. Blackbird is back with chefowner Carina Lampkin again at the helm. It’s located in its original space with a similar aesthetic, though with more focus on beer and bar food to better complement the seafood-inspired dinner menu.

A burger served with house pickles, seven-day house-cured bacon, cheddar and sweet ’n’ chivey “awesome sauce” make for one of the city’s best burgers, no question. Chowder fries, however, are nifty in theory— fries covered in bay shrimp, bacon and parsley, then doused with chowder. It’s a play on poutine, but a lack of acid and serious sogginess issues mar it from being a landmark dish.

Better yet? Fish tacos featuring fried pollock served with pickled cabbage and chipotle crema. These and a beer will remedy any bad day you’re having. American. 1015 Ninth St., (916) 498-9224. Dinner for one: $10-$30. HHH1/2 G.M.

Midtown Block Butcher Bar This place serves the holy trinity of European cuisine: meat, cheese and alcoholic beverages. Most of its boards and plates are balanced using three basic tastes: salty (meats and cheeses), sweet (honey and jam) and sour (pickles and vinegar). The charcuterie boards impress visually and on the tongue. A recent selection included shaved almonds, neat piles of meat,

mustard, pickled cauliflower and beets, served with small slices of bread. The ’njuda sandwich is startlingly spicy and salty, with rich melted cheese and ground meat spread between pressed slices of bread. Or try the pressed serrano ham, manchego cheese, arugula and salsa sandwich—it’s like a cross between a cubano, a breakfast panini and a torta. Elsewhere on the menu there are fine cocktails, an intimidating whiskey list, and a small but diverse selection of beer and wine, both regional and international.

Cafe Plan B This Midtown iteration of the popular Plan B Restaurant in Arden Arcade brings to mind old-school French dining. This should not be read as an insult. The menu runs with salads, sandwiches, mains and appetizers—however, the highlight is the generous array of mussels served in both modern and classic fashion.

The épicé mussels are served in a thick tomato sauce with a rumbling chili-garlic heat.

Coconut-broth mussels are sweet and tangy and worth a visit. A white-anchovy tartelette with shredded fennel and leek dazzles—it’s the sort of light food welcomed in tripledigit heat. The puff pastry it sits on is a means to an end.

Branzino cooked en papillote is also a thing of beauty: light, flaky and served with wisps of lemon and fennel. The wine selection is limited, however, the house white is affordable

the Il Fornaio camp, but with a lower price point.

Recommended options include the Bruschetta Rustico, with chunky toasts layered with seasoned cheese, grape tomatoes, basil and balsamic vinegar. Pizzas are offered at 7 or 16 inches, with lots of optional additions. A small Pomodoro Mozzarella, with sliced tomatoes and marinara, was serviceable with medium-thick crust and plentiful toppings. A signature frutti di mare pie with shrimp, scallops, mussels and seafood sauce is a more unique take on the category. There are also quite a few vegetarian choices, including Vegetale de las Casa. Eggplant, peppers, zucchini and other veg are sautéed in oil and tossed with Parmesan and Gorgonzola. For dessert, try the tiramisu. If you’re feeling generous, order the caffè sospeso (“pending coffee”), in which you pay for a cup for the next guest.

Der Biergarten This spot is a slightly quirky, low-key place with only nine food items on the menu: four appetizerstyle options, four sandwichtype offerings and a sausage platter, plus about 30 cold ones on tap. Patrons order from a building that was built from a couple of cargo containers and dine outdoors on communal benches, traditional German biergarten style. The Derfinater Dog is a gussied-up hot dog, and despite its seemingly excessive number of toppings, everything served a tasteful purpose. The mayo and garlic sauce helped moisten a somewhat dry roll, and the bacon added saltiness, which balanced the sweetness of cream cheese and barbecue sauce.

The pretzel disappointed by being a bit on the flaky and brittle side. The sausage platter was the best item on the menu: a pork sausage, chicken sausage, and a veal-and-pork sausage—much more plump, juicy and flavorful than the frankfurters—served alongside piles of sauerkraut and German potato salad. Land Park/ Curtis Park Pangaea Bier Cafe Just as European wines are made to be enjoyed with food rather than sipped alone, the current tsunami of European-style microbreweries feature drinks often best quaffed alongside a well-crafted meal.

Pangaea Bier Cafe recently stepped up its food game to satisfy that need with a revamped menu that includes an ever-changing rotation of seasonal, slightly upscale pub food. Try the Buffalo wings: They’re deeply flavorful fried morsels with a thick glaze.

The mac ’n’ cheese is creamy, with a bit of beer in the sauce and a crunchy topping of herb-flecked breadcrumbs.

The sliders are gorgeous little mouthfuls with Tillamook cheddar and house-made pickles. The main-course cheeseburger, one of the best we’ve had in ages, is made from a custom blend of brisket and chuck. This is a juicy

South Sac Bodhi Bowl This Vietnamese eatery’s menu is all vegetarian and mostly vegan, with plenty of high notes. The Heavenly Noodle is a can’t-go-wrong salad comprising snow-white vermicelli noodles with cooling mint, cucumber slices, house-roasted peanuts and jagged pieces of faux beef. The “beef” actually is slightly sweet, plenty umami and pleasantly inoffensive, as far as fake meat goes.

Nearly everything here has a faux-meat product or tofu element. So, sorry diners with soy allergies—it can’t even be escaped in the papaya salad. Not an issue?

Soldier on with the Hot & Sour soup, a not-too spicy sunset-orange broth that teems with a tomatoey and citrus flavor, chunks of pineapple, semicircles of trumpet mushrooms, cubes of fried tofu and slices of faux crab.

The kakuni ramen, which features three thick slices of braised pork belly in lieu of the house ramen’s thin slices of chashu, boasts a nice, sweet marinade; tender consistency; and copious flavor. The sushi rolls here are Western style—a.k.a. loaded with toppings. Try the Mufasa roll. With crab and avocado on the inside and salmon and sauce outside, it’s particularly tasty, seasoned in sesame oil and baked—a somewhat unusual technique for sushi.

Zazon Guadalajara Grill This place offers a fun experience for learning more about food native to the state of Jalisco, where the city of Guadalajara resides, with an extensive and eclectic menu. The tacos here are outstanding. The cabeza (beef cheeks) and barbacoa are the best fillings—both so tender they practically melted. The chicken tasted rich with dark meat and subtle spice, while the carnitas are flavorful but tend toward dryness. There are also fried fish tacos here. The Guadalajaran influence also shows in several shrimp dishes. We tried the grilled and garlic preparations, both served with buttery rice studded with corn, peas, carrots, and plenty of sautéed peppers and onions. We loved the slightly charred flavor of the grilled

Saloon, this spot brings a bit more culinary hope to an often forgotten part of Sacramento. The whiskey burger is a mighty sammich of perfection with smoked Gouda cheese and bacon that serve as excellent counterpoints to the achingly sweet maplebourbon glazed red onions.

Arden/ Carmichael Dad’s Kitchen The cooking at this Guy Fieri-approved joint is consistent and at times technically terrific. Try the Dad’s Burger (lettuce, red onion, tomato, Aleppo chili aioli, and a beef patty encrusted with blue cheese and bacon). With a firm and chewy bun and a sauce with kick, it’s one of Sac’s best burgers. Or get the Hot Blonde. It’s like a subtle, healthier version of a club sandwich, with organic chicken, avocado, spinach, cucumber, roasted onion and Swiss cheese—all set between sourdough bread and grilled on a panini press. It boasts a crunchy texture from all the veggies, a light boost of piquant flavor from a “pepper plant sauce,” and won’t leave you feeling overly stuffed after eating it.

Rancho Cordova Fire Rock Grill The former Sheepherder’s Inn, housed in an early 1900s-era building that used to be a hotel and a brothel and many eateries, is now Fire Rock Grill. The menu here features comfort-food favorites that don’t push any boundaries; the execution is impressive. A simple cup of New England-style clam chowder, for instance, is served chunky with potatoes, clams and bacon in a silky cream base, without a hint of gumminess. Try the Fire Rock Burger—it’s one of the better burgers we’ve eaten recently. Half-a-pound of Angus beef cooked perfectly mediumrare, it required at least three napkins to soak up the fingerlicking juices. Caramelized red onions, pepper jack cheese, pickled jalapeños and chili mayo, plus tomatoes and lettuce, made for a big stack of flavor.

Vegetarians are just as lucky: The grilled portobello sandwich arrives layered with that high-end mozzarella, roasted peppers, onions and basil mayo on a focaccia bun. Lance Briggs, Elk Grove High School alumnus turned professional football player with the Chicago Bears, is opening a new smokehouse on Monday, September 1. Double Nickel Smokehouse is located at 3443 Laguna Boulevard, Suite 150 in Elk Grove, in what a press release refers to as the “Elk Grove Sports Center Complex”—a shopping plaza that already features a Pins N Strikes bowling alley, Surf Xtreme and a California Family Fitness gym. Some of the Double Nickel’s entrees will include smoked brisket, short ribs, salmon, and shrimp and grits. It will also offer sides such as braised vegetables, coleslaw and a green-bean casserole. Local beer, wine and cocktails round out the menu. Briggs said that he’s sampled some of the best smokehouses in the nation throughout his football career and always wanted to open a barbecue spot with a Southern flair. “I couldn’t be more excited to realize that dream in my hometown,” said the linebacker. The title of David Shafer’s novel (Mulholland Books, $26) is the military radio phonetic spelling of that slang staple, WTF. That’s fitting, because BOOK this thriller is about a small group of disaffected 30-somethings who are out to prevent a shadowy international conspiracy to put the entire Internet behind a paywall that will make its creators even richer than they already are. Shafer, a journalist, creates some outstanding characters including Leila, a nonprofit do-gooder working in Myanmar, and Mark, a self-help guru in New York who’s got plenty to fix in himself. In Shafer’s hands, they’re as funny and as paranoid as can be, which makes this an entertaining and smart book.

If you’ve visited the Capitol Park neighborhood of Sacramento recently, you may have noticed a transformation of sorts. No, it’s not the wrecking ball tearing down parts of Downtown Plaza at ART Fifth and L streets. Rather, something a bit more subtle is brightening the urban landscape on various street corners.

Those old, nondescript grayish electrical boxes have been converted to art displays as part of the Capitol Box Art Project, which exhibits a diverse collection of designs from 20 local artists. There will be a total of 31 utility boxes upon completion, all wrapped with highgloss vinyl, according to the Capitol Area Development Authority, which organized the project in tandem with the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission.

The vibrant boxes bring a popart look to Sac’s urban core—and in most locations provide a visual statement that is hard to miss.

A number of Sacramento-area artists have their work displayed on multiple boxes, including Janine Mapurunga, Jim Piskoti, Melissa Uroff, Bryan Valenzuela and Laura Caron (whose work is pictured above).

The goal of the project is to promote the city’s art scene and, in the process, cover up years of graffiti and discourage fresh tagging.

Visibility of the art boxes varies depending on adjacent business signage and the amount of additional street-corner structures operated by the city. But even in the worst display conditions, the box makeovers create a more interesting environment and showcase local art to those who may never step into a gallery. Why do people in happy relationships ask single people insensitive questions? Whenever I share what I did over the weekend, I’m asked: “Who’d you go with?” When I say I went alone, people say “Oh,” as if it’s weird to do things alone. If I wanted them to know who accompanied me, I would have included that information. The other day, a married female co-worker told me I needed a wife. Why insinuate that my life is inadequate? These comments hurt and make me feel poorly about myself. Suggestions?

An ugly truth Enslaved El Teatro Espejo takes a seriously dark turn with Enslaved, a drama by RubÊn Amavizca-Murúa about human trafficking for sex work. Like Amavizcaby Kel Munger Murúa’s The Women of Juårez, Enslaved uses the story of one young woman and her desperate mother to illustrate a particular aspect of human trafficking.

The play opens with a shocking, noisy, confusing scene in which a parade of men move through the door of a brothel, pay a menacing pimp, are guided by a madam to women in curtained cubicles and exit in a near-ballet fashion. Meanwhile, the women, crying and frightened, are attended by the Singer (David Castillo), a white-clad masked figure who is both comforting and foreboding.

4Theâ&#x20AC;&#x192;Ladiesâ&#x20AC;&#x192;Foursome The Ladies Foursome, Canadian playwright Norm Fosterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest comedy, is par for the Foster course. It tees off on life with something like nine holes of funny, a sand trap or two, and then a deliberate walk to the final green.

There are plenty of laughs win this B Street Theatre production, the playâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s United States premiere, which opened on Sunday. But when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s over, you just think somehow it could have played better. It certainly could have played faster: The first act felt like 18 holes on its own.

The Ladies Foursome follows four women on a memorial trip around the links the day after the funeral of a friend. Three women (Amy Kelly as Margot, Tara Sissom as Tate and Melinda Parrett as Connie) convene with a fourth player (Shannon Mahoney as Dory), another friend of the dead woman, who was not known to the others.

The challenges of the golf course are nothing compared to the secrets and struggles revealed as Fosterâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;through these womenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; takes apart life and tries to put it back together in a way that gives it meaning. Each woman has a backstory and is fascinating in her own right. Their talk is frank (sometimes quite sexual) and brutally honest, although the final big surprise is no surprise at all. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just say that promiscuity and homosexuality donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exactly shock or surprise the way they used to.

The play then turns to the narrative of one of the women, Andrea (Yesenia Lopez), a lovely but naive 18-year-old, living with a protective mother (Gladys Imperio-Acosta) in a small town in Sinaloa where she is wooed by the slimy Mexican-American Victor (Ruben Oriol-Rivera, who also plays a detective). Against her motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wishes, Andrea â&#x20AC;&#x153;elopesâ&#x20AC;? with Victor, only to be drugged and turned over to the violent pimp Emilio and his manipulative madam, Rocio.

While the sexual violence and a forced abortion occur offstage, there is still plenty of violence. This is a raw, sharp-edged accounting of how sex trafficking works, and is based on an actual case from the Los Angeles area. To this forensic approach, playwright Amavizca-MurĂşa and director Manuel Jose Pickett have added some near-mythic tropes, such as the recurring Singer and the use of a tree that drops its sparkling petals during the course of the action. The set, designed by Neils Larson, takes advantage of the industrial skeleton at California Stage and is perfect for this production: spare and flexible, the curtains on the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;cribsâ&#x20AC;? functioning as backdrop for other scenes.

Comic Potential

This odd Alan Ayckbourn play about robots taking over the acting profession doesn’t quite know what its overall message is or how to say it. It’s never really made clear why robots are so much better than actors, why they’re preferred by the human television producers, or how a robot would end up with human emotions. Overall, the play can’t decide whether it’s a social commentary or broad over-the-top comedy, which presents challenges for this local production that also vacillates in pacing and tone. This is a grand oldschool operatic musical which burst onto Broadway in 2005 amid lighter fare and special-effects-laden shows.

Based on a novella by Elizabeth Spencer, the story is set in the 1950s and revolves around a mother-daughter trip to Italy and explores past, present and future loves of both women.

Under a tight directing crew, the cast is a swirl of musical and acting talents—most notably Carly Giroux as the mother, who achingly coveys hope and heartache while belting out impressive vocals. Improv troupes will do anything for a laugh: sexual innuendos, fart jokes, puns galore, etc. Wet the Hippo technically does improv, but it’s nothing like Who’s Line Is It Anyway? The Los Angeles troupe won an award called “The Evil Kenevil” in 2013’s Hollywood Fringe Festival—and it’s fittingly daring. Director John Gilkey, whose background is Cirque du Soleil, stays onstage with the actors, directing them, poking and prodding them in different directions. The goal isn’t even to grab laughs, but to be as daring as possible, to push the boundaries in every direction to the extreme: be the stupidest, the smartest, the most absurd, or as Gilkey says, “reach for the sublime.” It’s a dizzying production that is constantly switching gears in unexpected ways—deadpan, slapstick, long rants. It’s a chaotic comedy adventure. Fall guy The November Man With the possible exceptions of Timothy Dalton and David Niven, Pierce Brosnan was the least effective and least memorable actor to ever play James by Daniel Barnes Bond on film. Brosnan is even bested in the Bond film canon by George Lazenby, who only appeared in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, as well as Roger Moore, a bad actor who never even appeared to be in particularly good shape. Over the course of four films of varying badness, Brosnan was a lightweight James Bond for the creaseless corporate vapidity of the 1990s, adding no layers of personality to a role that had already become an anachronism by the late-Sean Connery era.

The irony of it all is that Brosnan has fared far better in James Bond-esque spy, con-man and lady-killer parts where he does not actually play Bond, including films like The Thomas Crown Affair, The Matador, The Tailor of Panama and even Brett Ratner’s After the Sunset. He exudes a comfort and ease in those roles that betrayed him in his performances as Bond, where he was forced to be all things to all demographics and had to carry the high expectations of a decaying franchise desperately in need of an overhaul.

Allowed to play a role at his own slow, steady, twinkly eyed beat, Brosnan has displayed a lowkey effectiveness in genre films.

Brosnan certainly slips comfortably into his lead part in the espionage thriller The November Man, playing an aging but still deadly international spy chased by both crooked Russians and his own people. If anything, Brosnan is far too comfortable here as the world-weary Devereaux, and the same goes double for director Roger Donaldson and screenwriters Michael Finch and Karl Gajdusek (adapting a novel by Bill Granger). The November Man is so comfortable, so content to reprocess the familiar and predictable, that the film practically dozes off on the recliner in the living room of your mind.

If you took a shot every time you spotted a recognizable spy-movie cliché in The November Man, you would be hammered before the end of the opening credits. The cynical veteran who surrendered his humanity to the job? Drink.

His hotheaded young apprentice with the itchy trigger finger? Drink. “You feel the need for a relationship, get a dog.” Drink. The big job that gets tragically botched due to the veteran’s hardheadedness and the rookie’s inexperience?

Drink. The dead child who drives the veteran into retirement? Drink. The old boss who ropes the veteran back for one last job? Chug.

We are maybe 10 or 15 minutes into the film at this point, and we haven’t even gotten to the trucks carrying giant panes of glass, or the many slow-motion walkaways from automobile explosions. A certain level of reliance on familiar genre tropes is expected and even encouraged in a spy film—we know that themes of moral compromise, cultural distrust and identity displacement are going to come up, and that shadowy figures are going to liberally chase our heroes through dark alleyways and parking garages. But even by the loosest of standards, The November Man is pretty half-assed, interchangeable from any number of unmemorable spy flicks and/or reruns of Remington Steele.

It plays less like a gripping spy yarn made for the big screen and more like the two-hour pilot for a midseason CBS fill-in show. Brosnan is easy to accept in his tailor-made lead role, but the supporting cast has even less to work with.

Luke Bracey struggles with an underwritten part as Devereaux’s hotheaded apprentice turned pursuer, while the talented Olga Kurylenko plays a secretive social worker who slips into a black microdress just long enough to make it on to the poster dressed as such.

This film was executive produced by Brosnan, although he was just one of the 18 credited producers needed to bring this deeply personal vision to the screen. Brosnan is rumored to be making an appearance in the planned fourth edition of the execrable The Expendables franchise. If he is going to keep churning out by-the-numbers duds like The November Man, then Sylvester Stallone’s cinematic wax museum is the perfect place for Brosnan to rest. Ω

Boyhood

A seemingly limitless stream of pure empathy runs through Richard Linklater’s transcendental movie event/social experiment/life-affirming headtrip Boyhood.

At the end of the film’s first seamlessly interwoven vignette, 6-year-old Mason (Ellar Coltrane, literally growing up on camera) and his family are moving away from their sleepy Texas town. As the car drives off, Mason’s playmate speeds up on his bike for one last glimpse, barely visible through the tall grasses of fading memory. This is the first of many forgettable friends who will flit in and out of Mason’s young life. Late in the film, when Mason is a college-bound teenager, an adult offers that post-adolescence is “where you find your people,” and Mason can barely refrain from rolling his eyes. The miracle of Boyhood is that we empathize with everyone in this scenario, even with the nameless and forgotten playmate starring in his own alternate-universe movie life. D.B.

Calvary

John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary asks some challenging questions about the nature of sin and redemption. Are the priests who ignored sexual abusers in their own church just as guilty of their crimes? When Jesus died for our sins, was it tantamount to suicide? If we’re just actors in a play that has already been written, do sin and virtue even exist? “Do you know what felching is?” That last question, asked by an unworldly young priest (“I had to look it up”), is a perfect example of the way that McDonagh balances expansive philosophical ideas against naughty-boy shock humor. Much like McDonagh’s 2011 debut The Guard, Calvary traffics in that borderline surreal dichotomy between the existential and the vulgar. It is a tough trick to pull off, and while there is a lot to like here, too often the results more smugly suited to the proscenium arch than the letterbox. D.B.

The Giver

In a placid future community, a young man (Brenton Thwaites) is selected to be the next Receiver of Memories, but as his training under the present Receiver (Jeff Bridges) advances, he begins to see that his society isn’t perfect at all—in fact, it’s oppressive and (on the screen, literally) colorless. Directed by Philip Noyce and adapted

by Michael Mitnick and Robert B. Weide from Lois Lowry’s award-winning novel, the movie is most charitably described as Aldous Huxley for children. Ross Emery’s cinematography, a blend of color and monochrome, lends an intriguing look, but the fuzzy plot demands a suspension of disbelief that only a child can make. Perhaps it worked better on the page with an 11-year-old hero than with the 24-playing-17 Thwaites. Meryl Streep costars as the society’s unctuous tyrant. J.L.

Guardians of the Galaxy

In last year’s hollow and dutiful Thor: The Dark World, the climax took place in a red cloud. In James Gunn’s busy and dispiriting Marvel comic-book adaptation Guardians of the Galaxy, it takes place in a purple cloud. Progress! With an ensemble cast that includes a talking raccoon and a sentient tree, Guardians of the Galaxy is more ostensibly a comedy than other Marvel properties like Thor and Captain America, but it offers roughly the same amount of jokey and juvenile bickering as those other films. Far from upending the Marvel formula, this is just another entry in its spreadsheet, The Avengers minus the monstrous egos.

Gunn juggles several different MacGuffins, but the only point is to create a through line to the next movie: Just like everything else in the Marvel cinematic universe, Guardians of the Galaxy exists solely to advertise its own as-yet-unmade sequels. D.B.

A talented teenage cellist (Chloë Grace Moretz) lies in a coma after an auto accident kills her family. She has an out-of-body experience, reliving her past and her budding romance with a local rock star (Jamie Blackley) while deciding whether she wants to live or die. Adapted by Shauna Cross from Gayle Forman’s novel and directed by R.J. Cutler, the movie (like the book) uses the out-of-body gimmick to inject suspense and a supernatural charge into what would otherwise be a pretty bland and unexceptional story.

But only churlish folks will pick nits: The movie is an efficient and satisfying teen tearjerker, well acted by beautiful people wearing beautiful clothes and speaking sensitive thoughts. Joshua Leonard and Mireille Enos play Moretz’s loving parents, Stacy Keach her distraught grandfather. J.L.

Steven Knight and directed by Lasse Hallström, the movie could stand 10 or 15 minutes’ worth of trimming, while less-muted cinematography from Linus Sandgren might have made the culinary atmosphere a lot more mouthwatering.

Still, there’s charm enough to more than offset those cavils, with a nifty balance between old pros Puri and Mirren, and new faces Dayal and Le Bon. J.L.

Land Ho!

A retired surgeon (Earl Lynn Nelson) treats his ex-brother-in-law (Paul Eenhoorn) to a vacation in Iceland. We learn in time (spoiler alert!) that the surgeon was forced to retire because he was an unpleasant jackass who couldn’t respect personal boundaries— but by that time, we’ve already had our fill of him ourselves. It’s easy to understand the man’s former co-workers; why did they even put up with this jerk long enough for him to retire? He badgers strangers with nosy questions and dominates his brother-in-law, who lacks the personality to stand up to him. Written and directed by Aaron Katz and Martha Stephens, the movie has pretty scenery, but it’s a crashing bore—95 minutes of uninteresting people doing nothing. It’s like a travelogue about Iceland with an obnoxious narrator who won’t shut up. J.L.

Magic in the Moonlight

Woody Allen continues his Western European tour of pretty sunsets with Magic in the Moonlight, yet another in his now two-decade-long series of mediocre gimmick comedies. After dabbling in hypnotism (Curse of the Jade Scorpion), hysterical blindness (Hollywood Ending), ghosts (Scoop), fortune-telling (You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger) and time travel (Midnight in Paris), Allen’s latest concerns a snobbish magician (Colin Firth) attempting to expose a button-nosed American mystic (Emma Stone). The problem is not that such supernatural gimmickry is beneath Allen—classics like Sleeper and The Purple Rose of Cairo are as high-concept as they come—but that it’s just window dressing for another of Allen’s wafer-thin, low-pulse drawing-room comedies. At least Allen’s script serves his stars well—Stone is so faithful to the page that she rarely indulges in her usual cutesy, eye-crinkling mannerisms, while Firth gets to show a rarely seen testy cynicism. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

like it was knocked out in Rodriguez’s basement over a three-day weekend. Once again, it’s based on Frank Miller’s Dark Horse comic-book universe, and Miller is also credited with the film’s script and co-direction, so perhaps it’s no surprise that this Sin City more closely resembles Miller’s awful 2008 film The Spirit. Of course, it’s also a sign of how little Rodriguez cares that he can’t even rip himself off with conviction. All the moral ambiguity, sexual depravity and outlandish style of the first Sin City has been boiled down into a flavorless gruel of tacky hard-boiled dialogue and self-conscious posturing, and only a lusty Eva Green keeps the film from flatlining. A med-school dropout (Daniel Radcliffe), licking his wounds after a failed relationship, becomes infatuated with the cousin (Zoe Kazan) of his college roommate (Adam Driver)—but she’s in a stable relationship with her longtime boyfriend, leaving our hero “just a friend.” Filmed in Canada as The F Word (a better title), the movie plunges deep into When Harry Met Sally… territory, yet it survives thanks to crackling dialogue (by Elan Mastai, from a play by T.J. Dawe and Michael Rinaldi); brisk, light direction (Michael Dowse); and, most of all, the effervescent chemistry between Radcliffe and Kazan. Kazan, who should have hit it big with Ruby Sparks two years ago, is particularly good—quirky, charming, a true original. What is it going to take to make this delightful woman the star she deserves to be? J.L.

A high-school football team with the longest winning streak in the history of any sport—151 games over 13 years—has to cope with what happens when it finally loses a game. Based on the story of De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif., and coach Bob Ladouceur (Jim Caviezel), the movie can blame sportswriter Neil Hayes’ book for its clumsy and borderline-nonsense title (how does a game “stand tall,” exactly?), but the dreary parade of nonstop clichés has to be laid squarely at the feet of writers Scott Marshall Smith and David Zelon (the latter is also one of the movie’s producers). Caviezel does what he can, as do Laura Dern as his loving wife and Michael Chiklis as his loyal assistant, but the tsunami of triteness overwhelms them.

Cosmic Dial Tone, recorded to tape and released on cassette through Lolipop Records, fits Tele Novella’s charming, sunny, ’60s vibe.

The band’s psych-pop sound is fuller and sleeker than Agent Ribbons’ garage cabaret, though fans will find similarities between the two projects.

Gordon still takes the lead on songwriting, and her deep, striking voice remains at the forefront.

Lyrically, Gordon’s been experimenting a bit.

With Agent Ribbons, she constructed each song as a narrative. Now, she’s taking more creative license and moving into surreal, abstract territories.

“At first I thought it was lazy songwriting, but I don’t think so anymore,” she said. “It still takes a lot of work and thought— I’m just not bound to a sensical reality.”

With Agent Ribbons, Gordon wrote everything. Now, she’s relinquishing some control and is excited for a more collaborative process. “Trouble in Paradise” was the first song she and Chronis wrote together, and it’s a strong, catchy and polished track.

It also has a pleasingly creepy, quirky music video.

“It’s amazing to rely on someone else,” she said.

“Especially when you already admire their songwriting.”

But four years after relocating to Austin, Gordon still finds Sacramento seeping into her songwriting. The city shaped her whole worldview, and she had always romanticized its gold-rush history.

In the midst of what could have been a disaster, things actually fell into place. Smoothly.

Gordon and her boyfriend, Jason Chronis, had already discussed forming a side project at some point, and coincidentally, his own band, Belaire, was winding down. Other Belaire members hopped onboard, and together they prepped for what would become Tele Novella’s debut performance. The press loved its SXSW set— a mix of Agent Ribbons songs and brand-new material—and Tele Novella quickly became one of the most talked about bands from the festival.

“Everything has been so much easier with this band,” Gordon said. “It’s like a sharper knife that I don’t have to push so hard.”

Along with Gordon on vocals and guitar, the lineup includes Chronis on bass and Matt Simon on drums—both former members of Belaire and Voxtrot—as well as Sarah La Puerta on keyboard. They’re currently on tour supporting Tele Novella’s June EP, Cosmic Dial Tone.

Much like the band’s formation, the EP itself was a serendipitous hustle. With Agent Ribbons, Gordon won a contest for free recording time at Dub Narcotic Studio, known for hosting K Records artists such as Beck, Modest Mouse and Kimya Dawson. Luckily, the prize was transferable to Tele Novella, and the band organized a quick tour up the coast to the Olympia, Wash., studio right before the offer expired.

She suspects returning to town will be bittersweet as usual.

After the West Coast tour winds down this month, the band plans to hit the East Coast and then retreat into hibernation—Gordon hopes to have the debut full-length album recorded by next spring. In the meantime, Tele Novella will continue to hammer out its vision for itself, including costumes and props at live shows.

“It’s so new—there’s this freedom to do whatever we want,” she said. Ω

with any local politics, like those found on his Sac Hates Hip Hop series. Instead, Child’s Play is a renewal of his craft, touching on a few new turns that should be cultivated, though it’s hindered by old habits dying hard.

This one’s for the boob tubers: If Mahtie Bush is a militant truther for our city’s socially aware, Chuuwee exists for rap fans who prefer

tubers, social-media addicts and couch potatoes. The songs are named after reality shows, sitcoms, TV networks and movies. Chuuwee’s concerns are kept to what’s at arm’s length and selectable by remote control. Chuuwee struggles with the agitation of Internet trolls poisoning his life with negativity.

The Chuuwee Channel breathes clarity that comes with maturity and the distillation of highs and lows in fame (and infamy). It’s also a portrait of the artist as a jaded and damaged young man.

The channel-surfing motif is shaky in execution: it doesn’t entirely direct the songwriting or maintain faithful interaction. But when it does, Chuuwee sounds rejuvenated and driven. On “Eat at Joes,” he flips to the Food Network to render metaphors about his hunger and drive to provide a feast for his family. But his understanding of the sitcom Friends suggests he missed the point of the series entirely, even in syndication, since his eponymous version is about false bonds and fake camaraderie.

When Chuuwee lets his jaded side run loose, it suggests rap has brought him nothing but alienation and a healthy distrust for his peers. If the Chuuwee Channel were an actual station, it’d syndicate episodes of Maron, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Malcolm in the Middle and The Bernie Mac Show as a Kings of Curmudgeonry block.

Chuuwee closes with “Everybody Loves” (which exists in balance to “Everybody Hates,” the latter presumably referencing Everybody Hates Chris), with a sample of Ray Romano complaining, “Who am I? What do I do now? Where the hell do I belong?” On “Everybody Loves,” Chuuwee envisions himself in a Gatsby-esque mansion, the gates keeping his haters off the lawn, ultimately determining he belongs in isolation with his television and Scrooge McDuck swimming in money.

Truth or truther?: Last Saturday at Harlow’s, local rapper Mahtie Bush celebrated the release of Child’s Play, his follow-up to 2010’s Backpackramento. The new album’s title derives from Bush’s belief that life is hard, and thus music should come easy (at least for him), but the content within it is not 36 minutes of harmless recess.

Child’s Play is hardened by Bush’s life story as a husband, father and marginalized local rapper, plus civil-rights conflicts that cannot be ignored.

The timing might read as opportunistic, given the tragedy in Ferguson, Mo., and Monday’s live streaming of Michael Brown’s funeral, but Bush confronting the police state on “Dead Zone” could have been written at any point during that four-year gap between records. Trace it even further back to 2009 to the Oscar Grant shooting in Oakland. Trace it to 2013, when Jonathan Ferrell was seeking help after a car crash and instead a Taser was used on him before being shot 10 times. The hypocrisy of paid leave over homicide sentencing is addressed by Bush on “Dead Zone,” with lyrics such as, “If a cop shoots a kid he won’t see fed time.”

The duration of Child’s Play, currently streaming on Spotify, meanders through an internal struggle of consistency and intent. The record’s centerpiece songs, “Blood Runs Cold” and “I Ain’t Believing,” deviate from Bush’s signature backpack rap flow in exchange for a gruff delivery bearing likeness to Roc Marciano’s smooth candor. Despite the resemblance, it works to Bush’s benefit as his usual pattern of speech (see “Let Go”) dates his music to a bygone era and limits the growth in his songwriting. The production on “I Ain’t Believing” is tempered in percussion to finger snaps and subwoofer thumps beneath the ethereal sample from the Fugees’ “Ready or Not” and Suzanne Vega’s earwormy dah-dah-dah-dah from “Tom’s Diner.” It’s an unconventional cross-pollination of samples that juxtaposes Vega’s detached eyewitness single with the Fugees’ battle cry. Equally unconventional is Bush, who’s self-aware of being labeled a conspiracy theorist or truther, but it doesn’t dissuade him from proclamations of “Open up the border if you want the Latino vote / Because the only time we count, when numbers matter / Riot gear got us in fear, they want us to scatter.”

Finally, they’re here. Americana: It’s somewhat of a catchall genre that can describe any sort of American roots music with a country, folk or even rock vibe.

Americana in Old Sacramento, on the other hand, is the name of a multiday festival featuring, of course, Americana music—plus vintage AMERICANA vehicles, a beer crawl, history presentations, a dance party, an outdoor movie screening and a speakeasy tour. Music can be heard both Saturday (from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a country-western dance party at 7 p.m.) and Sunday (from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.). The funk-music collective is a sprawling, messy, soulful, chaotic spectacle that is at any given time a little bit James Brown funk plus Jimi HendrixLed Zeppelin fuzz, Sly & the Family Stone vocals, Run-D.M.C. rhymes, and Tower of Power soul. Band leader FUNK and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Clinton is still killing it in crazy costumes at the spry age of 73, and for those looking to cut loose in the funkiest way possible, this show is not to be missed.

It’s abrasive, yet goofy in its childlike happiness. The group has played a ton of shows since then, toured and gone through some lineup changes, and is now coming to the Witch Room with a new record, Area Codes, which sounds almost like a new band. The songs are tight, concise and even intricate—and some flirt with math-rock licks.

One listen to Black Majik Acid’s self-titled EP should appease any fan of psychedelic, low-fi doom. Led by songwriter, vocalist DOOM METAL and guitarist Sonny Iverson, this trio is rounded out by veteran bass player Cheryl Martin and Tyler Hobson on drums (Brent Wiggans is filling in for this show). Since 2013, BMA has played every downtown Sac haunt and built a name for itself through word of mouth. In less than a year’s time, it’s also managed to churn out a six-song EP and a split single. Guiding Patients Through Cancer Collective Giving helps fund navigators for program

“When you’re first diagnosed, you often feel helpless and alone — even when you have the support of family and friends,” Marlene says. “You have a lot of anxiety as you’re going through treatment. I wanted a survivor of the same kind of cancer to be my guide through that journey, and research showed that other patients wanted the same thing.”

“I really wanted to work with an organization that is directly helping cancer patients — some of which are medical marijuana patients,” White says.

During the month of June, the Collective Giving campaign raised approximately $5,000 for WeCARE! by selling golden tickets as sponsorships at local participating marijuana dispensaries. Marlene says that money will be used to train new peer navigators and host an appreciation night for current volunteers.

y the time Marlene von Friederichs-Fitzwater came on board as a professor at the UC Davis School of Medicine eight years ago, she had already beaten both cervical and colon cancer. So when thedirector of the program was asked to create a cancer outreach program in 2005, she drew on her experiences to add something she felt was missing from treatment.

So she helped create the WeCARE! Cancer Peer Navigator Program, which recruits cancer survivors to volunteer as a “cancer coach” for newly-diagnosed cancer patients. Navigators are typically assigned to two patients for the three to six months they are in treatment.

While the program started with only breast cancer survivors, Marlene says the goal has always been to cover even more patients and different types of cancer.

In 2009, the program expanded to include bladder, colon and prostate cancer survivors. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

“I wanted a survivor of the same kind of cancer to be my guide through that journey, and research showed that other patients wanted the same thing.”

“Conservatively, the money donated by Collective Giving will help us fund another 25 peer navigators,” Marlene says. “That’s pretty significant. We see over 10,000 patients a year, and those numbers are growing significantly.”

“We gather data every 30, 60 and 90 days from each patient on whether their knowledge of the disease has increased, their anxiety has decreased, and whether their coping and problem-solving skills have increased,” Marlene says.

“Our research shows that the program has been really significant in helping our patients deal with their cancer.”

Marlene says she would like to recruit more volunteers in the 18-39 age range.

Because many young people do not have insurance, they are in a later stage of cancer by the time they are diagnosed, and have different needs.

“That’s an area we’d really like to expand into, and these kinds of donations are helping us do that,” Marlene says.

Because WeCARE! is funded solely by donations, serving more patients has always been a challenge. Marlene says she was thrilled when Kelsi White, founder of Collective Giving, called and asked how she could help. Collective Giving is a collaboration of Sacramento-area medical cannabis industry organizations that benefits local causes.

Are marijuana arrests really a racial thing?

—Mike Green Good question. This can be a tricky subject. Let’s start with some numbers: According to a report from the Drug Policy Alliance (“Arresting Blacks for Marijuana in California” www.drugpolicy.org/docUploads/ ArrestingBlacks.pdf), white people use marijuana at a higher rate than blacks, but black people are consistently arrested for marijuana possession at a higher rate BEALUM than white people.

These numbers are from 2008. Arrest rates may have changed, but I doubt it.

Nationally, black people are 3.73 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana than white people (www.aclu.org/ billions-dollars-wasted-racially-biased-arrests#mjanalysis).

Let’s remember that racism was one of the primary factors leading to the prohibition of marijuana. Harry Anslinger, the man leading the charge for cannabis prohibition in the late 1930s, said this: “Most marijuana smokIn Sacramento, black ers are Negroes, Hispanics, people are arrested jazz musicians, and entertainers. Their satanic music is 5.7 times more often driven by marijuana, and smoking by white than white people. marijuana women makes them want to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and others. It is a drug that causes insanity, criminality, and death—the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”

Whew. Racist much? We still find this completely false attitude about marijuana causing violence today. According to the autopsy, Michael Brown had marijuana in his system when he was shot and killed in Ferguson, Mo. Many pundits and bloggers have used this information as a reason to suggest that the presence of weed in his system made Brown more prone to violence. Any pot smoker will tell you that marijuana and violence don’t go together. Hell, weed and violence don’t even like each other. Yet the myth that pot causes violence endures.

Ngaio Bealum Maybe I am tripping, but it seems to me that legalizing is a Sacramento marijuana would help end racism, or at least the racial comedian, activist disparities in our prison system. Putting someone in jail and marijuana expert. for marijuana makes no sense and is a waste of resources.

Listen: 61 percent of the people in jail for drug offenses are black or Hispanic, even though all races use and sell drugs at about the same rate. I bet that if the New York Police Department was to stop and frisk all of the stockbrokers on Wall Street, they would run out of room in the jailhouse.

So, you tell me: Are marijuana arrests racially motivated? In her book The New Jim Crow, author Michelle Alexander argues that the “war on some drugs” is really just state-sanctioned racism. In her words: “We have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it.” I think she’s right. Ω

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Start

every day off with a smile and get it over with,” said the misanthropic comedian W.C. Fields. I know it’s weird to hear those words coming from a professional optimist like me, but just this once I recommend that you follow Fields’ advice. In the near future, you should be as serious and sober and unamusable as you have ever been. You’ve got demanding work to attend to, knotty riddles to solve, complex situations to untangle.

So frown strong, Scorpio. Keep an extra sour expression plastered on your face.

Smiling would only distract you from the dogged effort you must summon. Unless, of course, you know for a fact that you actually get smarter and more creative when you laugh a lot. In which case, ignore everything I said. Instead, be a juggernaut of cheerful problem solving.

In fact, it was her influence that prompted him to depart from his prepared notes and improvise the stirring climax. “Tell them about the dream, Martin,” she politely heckled. And he did just that. Who’s your equivalent of Mahalia Jackson, Sagittarius? Whose spur would you welcome? Who might interrupt you at just the right time? Seek out influences that will push you to reach higher.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): During the

course of its life, an oyster may change genders numerous times. Back and forth it goes, from male to female and vice versa, always ready to switch. I’m nominating this ambisexual creature to be your power animal in the coming weeks.

There has rarely been a better time than now to experiment with the pleasures of gender fluidity. I invite you to tap into the increased resilience and sexy wisdom that could come by expanding your sense of identity in this way.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): I’m getting

When Europeans first explored the New World, ships captained by Italians led the way. But none of them sailed Italian ships or represented Italian cities. Cristoforo Colombo (today known as Christopher Columbus) was funded by the government of Spain, Giovanni de Verrazzano by France and Giovanni Caboto (now known as John Cabot) by England. I see a lesson here for you, Capricorn. To flourish in the coming months, you don’t necessarily need to be supported or sponsored by what you imagine are your natural allies. You may get further by seeking the help of sources that are not the obvious choices.

His English translations of the German philosopher’s books are benchmarks, as are his analyses of the man’s ideas. And yet Kaufmann was not a cheerleader. He regarded Nietzsche’s Thus Spake Zarathustra as brilliant and triumphant, but also verbose and melodramatic: a “profusion of sapphires in the mud.” I love that phrase, Aquarius, and maybe you will, too, as you navigate your way through the coming weeks. Don’t just automatically avoid the mud, because that’s probably where you will find the sapphires.

Misérables, French author Victor Hugo chose to write a convoluted sentence that was 823 words long. American novelist William Faulkner outdid him, though. In his book Absalom, Absalom!, he crafted a single rambling, labyrinthine sentence crammed with 1,287 words. These people should not be your role models in the coming weeks, Leo. To keep rolling in the direction of your best possible destiny, you should be concise and precise.

Straightforward simplicity will work better for you than meandering complexity. There’s no need to rush, though. Take your time. Trust the rhythm that keeps you poised and purposeful.

STORY

Conventional comic wisdom Melissa Pagluica writes, illustrates and self-publishes her fantasy comic Above the Clouds from her Sacramento home, posting one page every week.

The story follows a heartbroken Eily, who loses herself in an unfinished book and tracks down the author to try and make him finish it. Pagluica also volunteers for 916 Ink’s Makes Comics program and travels the California comic convention circuit.

Pagluica, who will sign copies of her work at SacAnime from Saturday, August 29, through Sunday, August 31, talked with SN&R about making comics and meeting fans—and experiencing her own fangirl moment.

What’s hardest part about self-publishing a comic book?

Getting it done! You have to keep yourself motivated, excited, and if it’s a personal project, you have to have the mindset to treat it like a job. Wake up, get this done by this deadline. Doing comic-book conventions has helped me a lot, because I’ll need the next chapter out before an event so I can sell it.

First comic-book love?

[When I was] a little girl, Sailor Moon was the first girl hero fighting for justice, and her transformation scenes appealed to me. New outfit! She fights crime! She wasn’t just fighting crime, she was healing her enemies.

How do you fight your inner critic?

I’m not trying to make it perfect, which opens up the opportunity to draw stuff I’d never thought I’d draw before. Chapter 2 concludes the first act of Above the Clouds—I broke out my story into three acts, and it keeps it outlined but loose enough to make it up as I go when I hit these destination points. I have to keep it fun, keep playing while I’m doing it. I know how it’s going to end, and I’m working toward that ending. I’m loving the process and living the journey.

How do you balance your art job with your day job?

I don’t have a life. Thankfully, I work from home … which gives me lots of flexibility.

I can plan my schedule out months in advance and tell my other job I’m not available the days of some conventions. I make sure I’m up and ready to go at 8 every morning. If I don’t get dressed, it feels like I’m just hanging out at home. I wake up, get my day job done, and then it’s comic time around 3 or 5 p.m.

What’s the comic-convention experience like?

It depends on what side of the table you’re on and what the crowd is like. Anime conventions are a mellower crowd, and some kids just hang out at your table the whole time, but they forget the artists are working. I sign merchandise and draw commissions, too, but I’m always afraid of not finishing and disappointing a fan.

Have any fans geeked out meeting you?

A couple of them. It’s very humbling, like, “Oh, me? What, really?” Before the convention, I got a fan letter saying she enjoyed my artwork. It was my first fan letter. She was around 12, and she came to say hello at the convention. It was so nice to meet her in person, too. She showed me her art, and she wants to work for [Tokyo-based animation company] Studio Ghibli. I told her, “You can do it!”

Have you had any fangirl moments?

Yes! I met Mike Mignola, and I’m a huge Hellboy fan. I love the way he lays out his pages. Every page is an art piece; there’s a freeness to his pages. He was at a convention I was tabling at, and I had a free moment when his table wasn’t crowded. I forgot to take a selfie with him—my mind blanked.

Advice for artist’s block?

The trick is finding that way to let go.

I remember back to my old figure-drawing instructor, Mr. Hoppie. In the first day of class he said, “Hey, you all want to draw perfect drawings. It’s not going to happen.

You’re all going to draw 1,000 crappy drawings; embrace it. Get them all out of the way. Go!” Since I embraced drawing crappy sketches, I’m not afraid to be messy. Free yourself from the ability to make a mistake, and don’t beat yourself up over it. You can get much further ahead without trying for perfection.

Dream gig?

I would love to do any story with Brian K. Vaughan. He’s such a good storyteller.

I can feel how things connect with the characters, moving toward an ending.

I love feeling like there’s something satisfying waiting for me at the end. With some comics, there’s a wall separating you from the story, but with his work, I get lost in it. That’s what I look for, getting lost in a story. Local tattoo artist Jesso Lange started painting long before she started tattooing, but her work as a tattoo artist has informed her work as a painter — and helped her become a better artist overall.

“Tattoo artists are finding their own voice and style,” Lange says. “They’re not just working in tattoos. They also paint and draw and even sculpt ice with chainsaws. If you create, you can’t help but continue to create and improve as an artist.”

Anders says he hopes that the City of Roses Tattoo and Art Festival reflects the industry’s elevation as art. There will be an art show featuring some of the artists’ work in other mediums, with an award for best in show. But mostly, Anders says he hopes that the festival will bring recognition to the hard-working tattoo artists in the area.

“Our industry has been flooded by companies taking tattoorelated art and marketing it,” Anders says. “I hope that this festival will educate the public on the talented artists that are working right here, so they can see the difference between a T-shirt of a tattoo design and the original art of an artist.”

“There are a wider selection of inks, so there are more color schemes available,” Bernhardt says. “Social media has also had a big impact, where you can now see other artists’ work. Artists are inspired by other artists, and you’re going to want to one-up the work you’re seeing and up the ante.”
