Turn off, dry out, pay up Recently, Sacramento got some summer heat relief via light rainfall.

Unfortunately, what fell doesn’t add up to a drop in the bucket when it comes to California’s ongoing drought.

Nor does an announcement from the State Water Resources Control Board mandating that public agencies, individuals and businesses can now be prosecuted and fined $500 per day for water waste.

For starters, many water providers have already said they won’t levy the hefty ticket, according to a July 21 story in The Sacramento Bee. Instead, they’ll stick to the current system of warnings and smaller fines.

It’s not enough. The city may have reduced its collective water usage by 13 percent compared to numbers from the past three years (see “Nestlé and drought, SN&R Editorial, page 15), yet I still see a surprising number of vibrant green lawns— both residential and commercial. An evening neighborhood stroll usually turns up more than one well-watered sidewalk as well.

According to a report at Climate Central, an independent coalition of scientists and journalists, nearly 70 percent of California is mired in “extreme” or “exceptional” drought conditions. Compare this to my hometown of Wichita Falls, Texas, which is currently embroiled in a “stage 5 catastrophic drought.”

Maybe it’s because Texas has burned hot and dry for years, but there, state-mandated restrictions mean no lush lawns, no green golf courses, no watery slabs of concrete.

Restrictions are enforced, fines are collected, and, as my mother tells it, everyone knows better than to put aesthetics before the climate.

“We just have dead grass.

Everybody does,” she says.

It’s time Sacramentans followed.

Turn off the water, dry out your lawns (and sidewalks), or pay up.

My dad listened to heavy metal when I was a kid, and I hated it. I was so embarrassed. As I became a teenager and got older, then I didn’t mind the rock music. I hated Metallica. Today, I listen to Metallica. I am not so much into the metal music; I like the older rock stuff. I like Aerosmith.

Re “Holy mess� by Nick Miller (SN&R Editor’s Note, July 17): Good to see your unbiased observations on the Gaza massacre. I would describe it as an unholy mess, actually.

I worked with some wonderful Palestinians in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates in the early 2000s. In fact, the Emirates is one of the few countries that has built hospitals and supplied ambulances in Gaza. Of course, they have to keep rebuilding them.

The Israelis are doing exactly what has been done to the Jews throughout history. They are creating new, raw karma every day that they persecute the Palestinians. Even when the Palestinians try to fight their letter of way out of the blockade, the Israelis claim self-defense. the week Just as the Chinese are doing with the minorities in the occupied territories of China: China doesn’t have a Muslim problem, the Uighurs have a Chinese problem.

Re “Cannabis lessons� (SN&R Editorial, July 17): Regarding your thoughtful July 17 Editorial, California needs to catch up with Colorado and Washington. California already has de facto legalization, but some California legislators want to restrict medical-marijuana access.

This would be a backward move.

Marijuana prohibition provides no societal benefit whatsoever. If the goal of marijuana prohibition is to subsidize violent drug cartels, prohibition is a grand success.

The drug war distorts supplyand-demand dynamics so that big money grows on little trees.

If the goal is to deter use, marijuana prohibition is a catastrophic failure. The United States has almost double the rate of marijuana use as the Netherlands, where marijuana is legally available. The criminalization of Americans who prefer marijuana to martinis has no basis in science.

The war on marijuana consumers is a failed cultural inquisition, not an evidence-based public-health campaign. In California and throughout the nation, it’s time to stop the pointless arrests and instead tax legal marijuana.

Sacramento to host Occupy National Gathering on heels of 99Rise’s protests against big money in politics After the so-called death of the Occupy movement, political activism is making a comeback by in Sacramento.

Nick Miller In June and July, law enforcement arrested 47 protesters over 12 days at ni ck am@ newsr evie w.c om the state Capitol. Those hauled away were members of the newly formed 99Rise movement. They peacefully remained in the building under the rotunda after curfew, in solidarity with their goal of getting big money out of politics. That hasn’t happened yet, of course, but the protesters made headlines by lobbying a few bills—and actually getting two passed.

Some of these activists marched nearly 500 miles from Los Angeles to Sacramento, and hundreds more were local. They proved that Sacramento holdovers from the Occupy contingent would no longer quietly go about their business. That they were done “licking their wounds,” as local 99Rise organizer Curt Ries put it.

And now they’re rising up, again.

This week, Sacramento will host a two-day training session for those interested in 99Rise. The city also will welcome the Occupy movement’s national gathering beginning next Thursday. There’s a major protest of Monsanto planned for Davis in midAugust, as well. Newkirk told SN&R that he thinks attitudes about money in politics are changing and says lawmakers are sympathetic to his group’s getbig-money-out-of-politics focus.

“The impact for legislators is getting worse and worse,” he told SN&R via phone from Los Angeles. “They’re having to spend more and more time raising money from wealthy people.

And they’re vulnerable, because billionaires can just come into a race” and prop up an opponent.

“The endgame is to have masses of people do civil disobedience.”

Curt Ries 99Rise’s Sacramento chapter When 99Rise visited Sacramento earlier this month, state Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg met with the group and backed their legislation—and even invited their video crew onto the Senate floor.

There were also arrests, 47 in all, for charges varying from protesting without a permit, trespassing on state property after closing, unlawful assembly, and obstruction or delaying a police officer.

Unlike Occupy, the 99Rise protests were nonviolent. There were no threats against officers or thrown bottles and no graffiti in the Capitol bathrooms, according to law enforcement. A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol, which made the arrests, said officers “really appreciated the level of respect that the protesters shared for law enforcement, and we definitely shared that respect back.”

The city of Sacramento and the county district attorney’s office has not announced whether they will prosecute the 47 arrests. A DA spokesperson said the office is in the process of reviewing the cases.

A training this week, scheduled for July 26-27, here in Sacramento organized by 99Rise, will teach people about the group’s brand of peaceful protest, plus organizing tactics and public-relations strategies. The movement will hold similar teach-ins nationwide.

“This year has seen explosive growth in interest from around the country,” Newkirk said. “We’ve just been really trying to catch up with that surge in demand.” The group boasts nearly 5,000 likes on Facebook.

An offshoot of the Occupy movement, 99Rise is different because it is leadership-based, whereas Occupy was famous for lacking central decision-makers.

There’s a lot of crossover in membership, though, at least here in Sacramento.

“What they were trying to do, with getting money out of politics, is what Occupy started over,” said Justin “Faygo” Clark, a local activist with both groups. “They’re more leaderbased than Occupy, but I kind of prefer Occupy, where anyone can step up and be a leader for a moment.”

Occupy also will make some noise this week, when it hosts the Occupy National Gathering from July 31, through August 3.

“The mainstream corporate media has tried to write our epitaph prematurely, but the Occupy movement is far from over,” said Delphine Brody, who’s helping organize the event. The group will focus on issues such as water rights, environmental justice, media reform and also money in politics during the free four-day event at Capitol Park and Southside Park. Ω

Sacramentans mostly look to Folsom Lake—or what’s left of it—when they think of spending a day on the water. by Tom Gogola Head southwest to Lake Berryessa, however, and middleclass recreation perseveres, even though in 2006 more than 1,000 mobile vacation homes were evicted.

Now, U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, a Democrat who represents the Berryessa area about 40 minutes from Sacramento, has a bill that would shift management of the lake from the Bureau of Reclamation to the Bureau of Land Management.

The congressman has also reintroduced a bill that would encompass the lake in a national conservation area, extending northward to the Berryessa Snow Mountain region.

The move would end a multijurisdictional jumble and create a single overseer for the region, which would extend from the lake to the southern end of Mendocino National Forest.

This means, essentially, that it would be easier to preserve Berryessa against mining and other encroachments.

“If Congress doesn’t act, then the president should.”

Bob Schneider senior policy director, conservation group Tuleyome “The congressman feels that the BLM is the best agency to manage recreational activities at the lake,” said spokesman Austin Vevurka.

Thompson’s office has also signaled a willingness to consider national-monument status for the roughly 400,000-acre proposed reserve if his NCA bill fails again.

“I don’t know if this would happen or not,” said Vevurka, “but there is an executive path—there’s a way for the [Obama] administration to declare it a national monument.”

The tourist economy just southeast of Berryessa in Napa sings a song of viticultural bliss, thanks in part to Thompson. According to the Center for Public Integrity, he is the House’s second largest recipient of funds from the beer and wine lobby. Thompson took $83,462 in 2013-2014 from the lobby, and is sandwiched between House Speaker John Boehner in the top spot and outgoing House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the three hole.

Thompson, a fiscal conservative Blue Dog, has negotiated pro-business tourism and anti-development environmental concerns as he’s massaged his bills to win over the locals.

He’s been good to the wine people over the years, but the Berryessa constituency is leery.

In 2006, residents watched as the feds shattered the backbone of the area’s economic driver there when it removed about 1,300 mobile vacation homes from around the lake.

“It’s a ghost lake,” Peter Kilkus, a resident who advocates for the lake, wrote in an email. He said he wants to restore it to its former glory and opposes the NCA move, saying it’s “unnecessary.”

Tuleyome, a regional conservation group, has been pushing to create the Berryessa NCA. Senior policy director Bob Schneider says NCA designation is a win-win for the environment and tourists, noting that an NCA designation for the Rio Grande del Norte in New Mexico saw a big spike in tourism.

But Schneider acknowledges that enhanced tourism under a BLM-managed conservation area may come with a “potential threat”: more tourists, more environmental stress.

Still, he notes that tourism at the lake wouldn’t return to its previous scale. The mobile homes aren’t coming back.

Thompson, Schneider said, assured locals that motorboats could remain on the lake, and privateproperty owners would be outside the NCA boundaries.

Yet Kilkus remains skeptical of consolidating the Berryessa region under a BLM umbrella.

His concerns are echoed by fisherman Mark Lassagne, who blogged on the Bass Angler website that new federal oversight could “eliminate launch ramps, marinas and much motorized recreation and other recreational uses of the lake.”

Kilkus said the NCA bill is likely to fail unless Democrats win back the House and keep the Senate in Democratic hands.

Under an EIR, the applicant must solicit and formally respond to community concerns. Not so under the assessment, a sort of planning loophole driven through the Legislature by state Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg. The decision to require a full EIR also pushes a likely commission vote until February 2015 at the earliest, Mende said.

A controversial Oakland rapper abruptly canceled two gigs in Sacramento this week after online threats of violence reached the clubs’ owners.

Philip Beasley took to the Twitter account he operates under his stage name Philthy Rich to spell out why he wouldn’t be spitting rhymes at Ace of Spades or Blue Lamp as planned this week. In the series of tweets from July 16, the underground rapper says he was forced to drop out of the July 23 and July 26 appearances after “[s]ome punk” threatened a drive-by shooting if he performed. He further said local law enforcement wouldn’t let him in the buildings due to the “death threats” and asked his fans to protest his Wednesday show at Ace of Spades, of which there was no mention on the club’s online calendar.

“I’m already banned from Oakland clubs I ain’t do shit but keep it real,” one tweet reads.

Ace of Spades owner Eric Rushing said the cancellation was due to poor ticket sales and the online foofaraw regarding Philthy’s alleged gang affiliation, which the club wanted no association with.

Philthy has released multiple albums and mixtapes, including some under late rapper Mac Dre’s Thizz Entertainment label, which federal authorities targeted two years ago in a massive ecstasy- and cocaine-trafficking sting.

Philthy was not one of the 25 individuals implicated in that operation, but he has been arrested on drug- and weapon-possession charges before, and was most recently busted outside of a San Francisco nightclub in 2012 for possessing a stolen Bentley.

Philthy has also earned the ire of local underground rapper Lavish D, or Donald Oliver, who’s being held at Sacramento County Main Jail on a pending assault case. In a March 6 interview with Siccness Radio, Lavish called out the Bay Area rap scene and Philthy in particular, who he accused of making tracks with his enemies. “Philthy is a bitch, my nigga,” Lavish said at one point. “Nigga, let’s rap battle, nigga. … My squad will gas any niggas from Livewire.” Livewire Records is one of the labels Philthy has recorded under.

On his Twitter account, Philthy bemoaned the gangster reputation that’s followed him his entire career, writing at one point, “I’m not in a gang im from seminary we don’t gang bang.”

According to his website, the hip-hop artist is next scheduled to appear at a Santa Rosa record store for a signing on Friday before taking the stage later that night at Petaluma’s The Phoenix Theater. Three little words: Follow the money. Many human activities—including politics, health care, business, law and economics—can only be understood if you follow the money.

While people do not always act in their own self-interest, this is certainly a better predictor than their stated interests.

Nestlé and drought Sacramento reduced its water consumption by 13 percent in May compared to how much we used during the three prior years, according to recent reports in The Sacramento Bee. (That’s still 7 percent above the governor’s requested 20 percent, but who’s keeping track?) Still, we are obviously in the middle of the worst drought in a generation.

Some of us are letting our lawns turn brown— or “gold,” as publicists for the state point out— plus shortening our showers, keeping the car dirty, and trying all sorts of other conservation tricks.

Other parts of the state aren’t doing as well. In fact, water consumption in California’s urban south, along the coast from Los Angeles to the border, is actually up 8 percent. That’s unacceptable.

We’re thinking specifically of Nestlé, the corporate giant that opened a water-bottling plant—over many objections—in south Sacramento in 2009. While it took a while to get up and running, the plant is estimated to bottle more than 200,000 gallons of water per day.

As SN&R pointed out years ago, at the city’s industrial water rate, Nestlé is selling tap water back to us at a markup of at least 1,000 times what the city charges (see “All wet” by Cosmo Garvin; SN&R Bites; May 13, 2010).

There’s an argument to be made that if the tap water is so potable, we should just drink it instead of buying our own water, bottled or otherwise. But that’s not the point: Changing our drinking habits won’t stop the Nestlé bottling plant.

No, it’ll simply ship that bottled water to other markets outside Sacramento, where people will be happy to buy our tap water for a tidy markup of a thousand times what we would have paid for it.

The Desert Sun, a Palm Springs newspaper, recently reported that the Nestlé water-bottling operation in Cabazon is taking water from groundwater wells on the Morongo Band of Mission Indians reservation. Bottling water from a drought area and trucking it to consumers is an absurd enough idea.

Tapping into groundwater reserves to make a dollar is not just myopic, it should be criminal. This story was picked up by national outlets, including Salon.

Let’s rewind a bit here: Sacramento, like Southern California, is a drought area, too. The very idea of bottling water and selling it at a markup— whether for local consumption or for export to areas outside the drought zone—is illogical.

At the very least, Nestlé should be paying a premium for our tap water, rather than the industrial rate. Those funds could then go to all sorts of public services, such as providing water and cooling stations for our homeless neighbors.

The drought is more than just a burden to all Sacramentans. Our dearth of water could be a new normal. And it should also be a wake-up call to Sacramento taxpayers: It’s time to come to grips with the reality of water in California. We need to move forward with long-term planning for water sustainability.

eel like fish for dinner? Then you’re in luck. There is no shortage of seafood in Sacramento’s restaurants and supermarkets. At Sunh Fish Company, a small family-owned shop in Midtown, the display case contains exotic items from every corner of the globe.

There are Chilean sea bass from the Southern Ocean, wild Mexican prawns, Hawaiian ono, tilapia from Taiwan and farmed salmon from Canada.

At Safeway, the selection of shrimp alone—America’s most popular seafood—seems almost endless, including canned, fresh on ice and bags of frozen prawns coated in beer batter. At Raley’s, there are packs of frozen baby octopi caught in Vietnam, swordfish from Singapore, mahimahi from Ecuador and yellowfin tuna from Indonesia. Local restaurants serve an equally diverse menu of items.

From this bounty of options it might seem that the oceans are teeming with abundance, but they’re actually in pretty big trouble.

Most fish populations are being harvested at or beyond their maximum sustainable rates. Fish stocks are declining, and seafood prices are climbing.

Farming of fish and shellfish— called aquaculture—has become

increasingly important in feeding the world. The industry has created a constant supply of many products previously seasonal, expensive or scarce. But even farming facilities are fraught with problems, like open-ocean salmon pens that cause pollution and disease outbreaks, and tuna-ranching operations that rely on massive amounts of wild fish as feed material.

With so many issues at play, how do smart shoppers who care about health and the environment even know what seafood is OK to eat? What’s the good fish and what’s the bad fish?

And what if the men and women behind the counter can’t even answer the most important questions, like where something came from or how it was caught?

A few Sacramento restaurants and retailers have been proactive in addressing the depletion of the oceans. By turning their backs on controversial seafood products, they’re coaching consumers toward the most responsible choices.

Nguyen Pham, owner of Sunh Fish, has signed off of wild bluefin tuna because their stocks have been so reduced. Whole Foods Market, Kru Restaurant, and Mulvaney’s B&L have all done the same.

But the majority of suppliers, including Bel Air and Costco, carry most seafood products that sell. Pham says most chefs and suppliers—especially in the sushi industry— must provide popular items, whether or not they’re considered sustainable, if they want to stay in business.

“If you only use sustainable fish, that cuts you back to almost nothing,” Pham explains. “There will be times when you have nothing to serve. You have to have a backup plan.”

That approach may be good for business, but it isn’t for the oceans.

The only glaring omission, perhaps—and one not required or necessarily even known—is the collateral damage: If this shrimp was trawled, presumably about 8 pounds of other sea creatures were killed and discarded.

This is perhaps the most dire issue connected to the shrimp industry.

Trawlers—boats that drag large nets across the ocean’s bottom—catch and kill much more than just their target species. Fishery experts say that for every pound of shrimp they bring to port, fishermen toss back several pounds of unwanted species—called bycatch—that they sift out of their nets.

Lorayne Meltzer, a scientist from Arizona’s Prescott College who has been studying the Sea of Cortez shrimp industry for years, says most bycatch is dead by the time it’s returned to the water.

Very little is kept and sold.

The bycatch tonnage consists mostly of halibut, sharks, snapper and grouper, with the occasional sea turtle. A recent haul, she told SN&R by phone from Mexico, was made up of about 90 percent baby halibut by weight.

For all those fish killed and tossed overboard, a few shrimp were thrown into the boat’s livewell. They were probably eaten in the United States, the biggest buyer of wild Mexican prawns, Meltzer says.

Yes, shrimp is the most popular seafood item in America, where each person eats an average of 4 pounds of the creatures every year—a total of more than 1 billion pounds.

But shrimp themselves, in most areas, are not at risk of disappearing. They breed like cockroaches—prolifically—and even where they are heavily fished, most shrimp populations are holding steady. Rather, it’s the animals they live with that are hurting.

Farmed vs. wild? Bluefin or albacore? Shrimp or no shrimp? How do we know if seafood is OK to eat—or if it’s destroying the environment and our oceans?

Sunh Fish Company owner Nguyen Pham, who offers an array of seafood from all over the world, says a challenge for restaurants is serving sustainable fish and being profitable.

“If you were driving to the [Sierra Nevada] and you saw some loggers in a national park clear-cutting the trees, you’d call the police,” he says. “Shrimp trawling is like deforestation, but because no one sees it happening, we don’t think about it.”

The devastation of trawling also goes unnoticed, Meltzer speculates, because the creatures killed by shrimpers tend not to be charismatic, lovable animals, like dolphins, which generated so much empathy and outrage in the 1980s, when an undercover cameraman filmed tuna fishermen butchering live dolphins that had become tangled in their nets. Rather, shrimping bycatch consists mostly of ungainly and slimy critters from the seafloor, she says.

By comparison, the bluefin tuna is an example of what some naturalists refer to as “charismatic megafauna.” The animal is one of the largest and fastest fish in the sea and can weigh almost a ton. Bluefins have virtually no natural predators and, capable of swimming as fast a semi on the Jackson Highway, can catch and eat most other things that swim. Mahimahi flee like panicked sardines when a bluefin pack appears.

But because the bluefin tuna tastes so good to the human palate, we have allowed this species, over a period of about 40 years, to be all but annihilated in the name of sushi.

Here in Sacramento, Mulvaney and chef Billy Ngo of Kru Restaurant, as well as Pham at Sunh Fish, quit buying wild bluefin tuna. It has been an ethical decision, made in spite of the popularity of the product—especially the buttery fat belly meat, called toro on sushi menus.

“If someone says, ‘I really want some toro,’ we’ll say, ‘I’m not confident with how bluefin tuna stocks are doing and how they’re raising them in farms,’” Mulvaney says. “‘But, look, we have albacore caught in California by hook and line.’”

However, in recent years, according to Pham, interest in eating bluefin tuna, at least among his clientele, has diminished.

“It’s not really something people want anymore,” he says.

This is presumably due to widespread publicity campaigns by fishery activists like Carl Safina and groups including Greenpeace and Oceana.

Ngo has also seen interest in eating bluefin diminish, though higher-end restaurants in the United States still serve a great deal. Most demand comes from Japan, where bluefin toro is the most coveted of sashimi cuts. To catch adult bluefin, boats use lines fitted with hundreds of baited hooks and set out overnight. They also use purse seines—large nets towed by power boats and wrapped around entire schools of fish.

The other primary harvest method involves netting schools of juveniles and “ranching” them in floating pens, where they are fattened on sardines and anchovies, reared to market size and slaughtered. This latter practice has been considered even more devastating than the fishery that targets adults, for the young tuna never have a chance to spawn.

unfished level, and with Japanese chefs willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a single fish, the rewards for fishermen drive the industry continued from page 17 forward.

If these animals were popular mammals, like rhinos or pandas, they would be protected as an endangered species.

Farmed Fish as the answer?

Michael Passmore stands in the rising morning sun. He reaches over the rim of a swimming-pool-sized tank just outside his office, his hand dangling in the water as a shark-shaped torpedo moves toward it through the murk. As the creature passes under the surface, Passmore makes a grab at its back, which is lined with rows of diamond-shaped studs. Fingers meet the leathery skin, and the huge fish thrashes away in alarm, splashing Passmore’s shirt.

The animal is 7 feet long.

This fish—a white sturgeon—and its companions have been living on the Passmore Ranch, about an hour east of Sacramento, since they were babies almost a decade ago. They are Passmore’s most prized residents, and next spring they will be harvested. Their flesh and carcasses will go to a few chefs, some of whom utilize every last scrap of head, fin, skin and bone.

Ngo, for instance, has used Passmore’s sturgeon skin to make a jerkylike fried appetizer, and the white meat as sashimi.

Other chefs use the fish’s backbones for

making soup. The sturgeon’s eggs—their real treasures—will be cured on-site, jarred and sold as caviar.

The farm also grows bass, catfish and carp, sold mostly to a few dozen restaurants around the country, as well as about 100 local households that receive doorstep delivery boxes of chilled fish fillets through the farm’s “community supported fishery” program. The farm,

global scale, fish and shellfish farming will help to meet the planet’s growing appetite for seafood.

“The oceans are producing food at their maximum limit,” says Passmore, who also serves as the president of the California Aquaculture Association. “Per-capita seafood consumption is rising, and to feed the world, aquaculture is going to become an important part of the equation.”

recognized for its sustainable practices, uses a gravity-powered water-circulation system and emits no wastewater off the property. Seafood Watch has even named farmed white sturgeon as a green rating on its “best choice” list. Mulvaney recently hosted a dinner to celebrate the designation and educate diners about sustainable seafood.

While Passmore Ranch is hardly feeding the masses, aquaculture has the potential to alleviate overfishing pressure on wild resources. Passmore believes that, on a

Some people in the seafood industry believe fish farming could help wild populations in decline by removing fishing pressure. There is even a relatively young farm in Japan that is now producing bluefin tuna.

Recently, a slab of the beef-colored flesh was displayed on ice at Kru. The meat came from a bluefin tuna that was raised

in captivity from egg to slaughter size, and with no reliance on wild tuna stocks—something that has been achieved by no one else.

“It’s sustainable,” says a sushi chef behind the counter at the restaurant as he slices cuts of fish, including Passmore Ranch’s sturgeon, which is served as nigiri. The bluefin tuna grown by Kinki University has been widely regarded as a major advance in aquaculture science. That’s because managing to fertilize and hatch tuna eggs in captivity, using a small collection of brood-stock fish, seemed for years to be impossible. Now, Kinki University is selling its very expensive Kindai tuna, the name by which it’s usually marketed, to restaurants around the world.

But not all seafood activists are impressed by Kinki University’s achievement. That’s because it takes about 10 pounds of fish—edible and valuable species like anchovies and sardines—to grow each pound of the product. Conventional tuna ranching uses as much as 18-20 pounds of fish per pound of tuna produced. Kindai bluefin represents an improvement, albeit a slight one.

“Frankly, [Kindai bluefin tuna] is staggeringly unsustainable if we’re talking about managing the global protein demand from the ocean,” says Casson Trenor, one of the leading voices in the country on the issue of fishing and sustainability, and founder of San Francisco’s Tataki Sushi & Sake Bar, which has been lauded for serving the world’s first “sustainable sushi.”

resources. In Peru, anchovy populations have plunged, thanks in part to the ravenous salmon-farming industry, and many activists are warning that fish farming continued from page 19 could end up doing more harm than good to the environment.

Tom Worthington, co-owner of Monterey Fish Market in Berkeley, feels the researchers who developed the Kindai bluefin tuna have created new issues in the seafood sustainability puzzle, not solved an existing one.

“It’s incredibly expensive,” he says. “It’s for superwealthy people. It’s not an answer for feeding the world.”

“Some species will not be suitable,” he says. “There are the major problems with the eel [unagi] industry and with bluefin tuna.

You need to remember that you’re growing fish for a very elite market.”

Farmed salmon, he says, are now being reared on less wild-fish meal than ever before—but only, he says, because plant protein is being used to balance out the feed blends, introducing issues to the aquaculture discussion previously only associated with livestock production.

“You have to be careful that you aren’t eating salmon that’s being raised on rainforest soybeans,” he says.

But Kenny Belov, who owns a trout farm in Lassen County, is generally skeptical of aquaculture. He believes only if done right— especially using landlocked systems of recirculated water—can aquaculture become a sustainable industry. Feed is an issue, as well, and one that Belov has directly tackled.

He has developed a proprietary feed blend based on fast-growing marine algae—not fish meal. Until recently, the mash included soy protein, a component Belov has replaced with nut waste from California farmers.

Belov also runs a fish supply company called TwoXSea, based in San Francisco, and has rallied against farmed salmon for years.

Geoff Shester, California program director for the group Oceana, points out that most farmed seafood is fed to other fish, sometimes in combination with plant protein. Shester, who himself has become a fan of catching and eating herring from San Francisco Bay, believes consumers should simply eat the smaller fish that farms use as their feed.

“You’re taking the ocean and all its splendor and turning it into a feedlot for farmed fish and animals,” he says. He also points out that 400 million people could eat a seafood meal every day—and a delicious, healthy one—“if we fed them the forage fish that we feed to livestock.”

Small fish, like anchovies and sardines, are high in healthy oils and, because they reside low on the food chain, contain less mercury than high-ranking predators, like tuna and sharks.

Anthonie Schuur, a Sacramento aquaculture consulting specialist, says species such as anchovies are not actually being taken from the mouths of the hungry. He points out that sardines, herring and the like are already used as food in the few markets where they are demanded. In fact, they can be relatively expensive.

“You can put some anchovies on a pizza for 8 or 10 bucks,” he said, adding that such schooling “bait fish” are caught at industrial scales and rendered into fish meal to grow other products simply because of the pull of consumer demand. “It would probably be good if we ate a little lower down on the food chain, but the demand is for salmon.

“Would you rather eat salmon or anchovies?”

Quite unlike farmed tuna, most farmed salmon raised are much cheaper than the wild product. The fish are reared in floating net pens in Canada, Europe and Chile. And more than two-thirds of salmon eaten in America—about 2 pounds per person per year—are farm-raised.

Raley’s, Safeway, Whole Foods, Sunh Fish, Costco—all are stocked with the product. Most restaurants serve it, too. And at one-half to one-third of the price of its wild-caught counterpart, farmed salmon has become one of the most ubiquitous seafood products in the world. Schuur says this is overall a good thing, allowing consumers

availability of the product creates a false perception of abundance, ultimately diffusing consumer interest in addressing environmental problems in the rivers where wild salmon lay their eggs, like agricultural runoff, diversion of water and construction of dams—the issues that have plagued the Sacramento Valley’s runs of chinook salmon.

“Not everyone in the world should be eating salmon,” says Belov.

Paul Greenberg, author of the new book American Catch, which details global issues in the world of wild seafood, fishermen and aquaculture, agrees.

“The advent of salmon aquaculture could cause the disappearance of wild salmon,” Greenberg said in an interview. “Consumers never see the environmental damage being done to rivers. They only see the display cases full of bright-red salmon meat.”

whaT The heck should we eaT?!

Change is coming. Mulvaney says he is “very careful about shrimp” and buys farmed shrimp only from reputed facilities in the United States. His wild spot prawns are caught in California with midwater trawls— setups in which the net does not touch the seafloor, producing a great deal less bycatch.

Worldwide, many governments have taken serious efforts to reduce bycatch,

requiring their fishermen to place escape hatches inside the nets that allow sea turtles and other potential victims to get out before tumbling into the belly of the net, where they will drown or become crushed by the accumulating mass of captured creatures.

But in spite of a law passed by the National Marine Fisheries Service in 1987 requiring that American shrimp trawlers use such turtle-excluder devices, fishermen in Louisiana have resisted, some refusing to abide by the law. The Seafood Watch program responded by slapping a red “avoid” rating on Louisiana wild-caught prawns, a rating which remains today.

John Filose, a San Diego consultant to seafood vendors and importers, says the bycatch issues with shrimp fishing have been mostly alleviated, and shrimp farming facilities no longer wantonly destroy mangrove swamps.

But Meltzer feels the distance between the source and final sale of most shrimp is too great for one to truly understand the consequences of eating it. Unlike most Americans, Meltzer almost never eats shrimp, since she believes it’s almost impossible to do so responsibly.

Yet shoppers at virtually any Sacramento supermarket continue choose from just about every seafood item imaginable.

Meanwhile, Filose believes that the ocean is healthier than it has been made out to be.

He says many environmental groups “have to cause crises to raise money.”

Schuur echoes the same allegation.

Though he believes the oceans’ productivity has been tapped out and will need to be balanced by sustainable aquaculture, he believes “environmental organizations have inflated issues beyond reasonable limits.”

“That’s their nature,” he says. “No one gives you money if there aren’t problems.”

Greenberg says there might be hope for maintaining abundant, healthy oceans even as our demands escalate. “If we’re all going to eat the government’s recommended daily allowance of fish, we have to do it by feeding ourselves with a combination of wild seafood and onshore aquaculture that doesn’t involve the grinding up of other fish to feed the fish that we want to farm,” he says.

Mulvaney is directly addressing the problems. So is Ngo, who has been trying to wean his customers off of unagi—one of the most problematic, but demanded, items in the sushi business. Eel farms depend on juvenile eels captured in the wild and reared in captivity. Wild eel populations have declined as a result.

Ngo has experimented with using Passmore catfish as a replacement, but for now, eel remains on his menu.

“It’s something people expect you to have,” he says. “You can’t just not serve it.”

But Trenor, at the helm of his own eel- and bluefin-free restaurant, asserts that chefs must drive industry change.

“If I were an herbalist, and I had people coming in wanting tiger penis and rhino horn, does that mean I’d have to give it to them?” he says. “No, it doesn’t, and chefs and business owners that put the onus on their customer are just passing the buck.” Ω

“He was a perfect fit,” McCleary says.

“We gave him the reins and the idea, and it’s really his brainchild now.”

McCleary and Burgoon built the 916 Ink Makes Comics program with a grant from Golden 1 Credit Union, a library of donated comic books from IDW Publishing and Big Brother Comics, and a squad of local volunteer artists. With Burgoon’s industry connections and passion, he launched the program into the literary scene like Colossus and Wolverine serving up a “fastball special.”

Burgoon says the journey so far has been creatively rewarding.

“I did take a pay cut to do something more amazing,” he says, “something that I believe in and could grow with. I get to do what I love, make the community better, work with good people and enjoy every day. I’d make that decision every time over money.”

Sutter, who views the comic-book industry through the lens of a feminist father to a 3-year-old daughter, gently questions Acsah and Gleniesha’s initial impression that both Zoom and Flame are white men. The girls’ eyes light up with realization. Zoom’s identity changes from Toby to Tori, and Sutter gives her a caramel skin tone closer to that of her creators.

“I just wish we had more pages,” says Sutter. “This could be a whole movie, a complete story that’s so cool.”

Comics, snobbery & the big show In early June, students, parents and artists gathered at The Brickhouse Gallery to mingle, nosh on cookies and snacks, and look at a copy of 916 Ink Makes Comics Issue No. 1, an item precious beyond valuation to its student authors. Burgoon glows with just as much pride as his young writers.

“This is so far beyond what I expected. It doesn’t get better,” he says.

“These kids are going to read for the rest of their lives, and to be a writer you have to be a reader.

Comic books are definitely literature.”

She plans to keep up her writing career.

“What I like about writing is it’s fun, it’s entertaining, and you can put your own ideas onto paper,” she says.

Desiray’s grandmother Mary Gary admires how Burgoon has coaxed magic from the minds of these kids.

“I have to say, I’m a little bit of a snob, because I have avoided comics after I became an adult,” says Gary. “I absolutely have gone full circle—I have an appreciation for comics again.”

Sacramento artist Eben E.B. Burgoon doesn’t just teach and mentor kids through the 916 Ink Makes Comics program, he often becomes part of their stories.

Reading the war, 100 years later It seems like a long time ago. Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated on June 28, 1914. But the repercussions still affect us.

World War I—the Great War, the “war to end all wars”— caused empires to fall or be overthrown, redrew maps and introduced the United States as a leader on the world stage. Nations were created—Yugoslavia, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Iran, Czechoslovakia and the Baltic states, for instance—and disappeared—the Ottoman, German and Russian empires.

Did you notice Syria, Iraq and Iran are on that list? Yep, WWI is still relevant. And, as one might expect, 100 years after the start of it, there are a slew of new books that purport to offer modern insight.

The Trigger: Hunting the Assassin Who Brought the World to War by Tim Butcher (Grove Press, $26) is among the better

“These kids are going to read for the rest of their lives, and to be a writer you have to be a reader,” says Burgoon. “Comic books are definitely literature.”

This fall, McCleary and Burgoon will bring the 916 Ink Makes Comics program back to Capitol Heights Academy for a gardening and farmto-fork themed book, supported by a California Endowment grant.

Ultimately, Burgoon says he hopes to grow enough to make a 72-page trade

paperback featuring more artists and longer stories. They might eventually bring in high-school age artists to gain experience, too.

“I want the kids to feel like they have a real credit under their belt,” he says.

Before that, however, Burgoon will launch into the next phase of his career with a more personal project via a Kickstarter campaign in August. The goal: Finance a six-issue trade paperback of B-Squad, with hopes of commanding an audience large enough to grab the attention of a cartoon outlet such as Hulu or Adult Swim.

Burgoon looks forward to supercharging his own stories by collaborating with his Sacramento squad of illustrators.

books addressing the war’s precipitating event. It’s an odd amalgam of history, biography, memoir and travel writing that really works to bring the inception point of the war into focus. Butcher covers the same terrain, on foot and by train, that Gavrilo Princip—the man who assassinated the archduke and duchess—traveled when he left his Bosnian Serb village in the mountains as a youth.

Since Butcher, a journalist, covered the Balkan Wars of the 1990s fought as Yugoslavia broke up, he’s got a lot of experience to draw on when discussing the complicated situation in this part of the world. His firsthand account of how deeply ingrained the hostilities are and how close to the surface the urge toward war remain in the area provides necessary perspective on WWI. Given recent events in Ukraine and the South China Sea, it’s also worth reading July Crisis: The World’s Descent into War, Summer 1914 by T.G. Otte (Cambridge University Press, $29.99). Otte, a British history professor, is concerned with the diplomatic failures that occurred between the The same urges assassination and the start of the war a month later. Even though he uses primary sources, Martel is very reader friendly, with an organization that includes a guide to the people involved.

WWI wasn’t the absolute beginning of current struggles.

But it helps to understand that the same urges to national identity, self-determination, retention of natural resources and political influence continue to drive global conflict. It’s just that the big picture sometimes brings into focus exactly where we are now.

If put to a vote, the KP International Market food court could probably win most diverse menu in the Sacramento area. Adjacent to the KP by Jonathan Mendick International Market grocery store in Rancho Cordova, this food court serves Mexican, j o nathan m@ Korean, Russian, Chinese and Vietnamese news review.c om food, plus a few that my dining companions and I didn’t have time to sample: Japanese (various sushi rolls) and Mediterranean (which includes items claiming to be of both Greek and Persian origin).

In other words, it’s basically an internaRating: tional smorgasbord.

HHH 1/2 It’s set up like a mall food court, but Dinner for one: instead of the typical circular arrangement, $5 - $15 there’s a single long, straight counter with dozens of premade food options, and madeto-order foods come from the kitchen behind the counter. Customers pay at one of a handful of registers, and receive a tray to take food to a seat. Unlike most mall food courts, however, the big difference here is the sheer variety of food offered.

H On my first visit, we sampled a carnitas flaweD burrito, a Russian dish called Chicken in a Basket and a Korean bibimbap. The carnitas HH has mOments burrito made for a fairly good choice. The pork was tender, and the guacamole and sour HHH appealing cream added a nice gooey texture. However, even with a few spoonfuls of added hot salsa, HHHH authORitative there was a distinct lack of flavor.

Though “chicken in a basket” suggests HHHHH something KFC might serve, this was actuepiC ally a unique creation: a chicken wing—bone protruding upward an inch past the rest of the dish—with seasoned mashed potatoes, all wrapped in a pastry shell. Though served at the Russian section of the food-court counter, it tasted much like a British pastie, or even an Eastern European knish.

The Chinese food here is all over the place in terms of quality. The vegetarian chow mein and fried rice that come free with two- and three-item combo plates were pretty much void of any flavor—they didn’t even have garlic, ginger or soy sauce—ingredients common in Chinese stir-fries. On one twoitem combo plate, the five-spice salmon was very dry and overcooked, but a pepperedsteak dish came with tender cubes of meat.

Another two-item combo—this one with Sichuan beef and kung pao chicken—didn’t

live up to the dishes’ advertised names: Both dishes were supposed to have spices from China’s Sichuan province (namely Sichuan peppercorns) but neither did.

Finally, since we saw many other people order it—even in 100-degree heat—we felt compelled to sample the pho, the only Vietnamese dish on the menu. This was the best dish ordered from KP International: rich, clean beef broth; tender sliced steak and meatballs; and a generous helping of lime, bean sprouts and Vietnamese herbs.

In the end, we still came well short of sampling half of the food-court menu—a task that seems near impossible.

A few years ago, I joked that if my friend and I went to dine at Real Food Daily, a vegan restaurant in Southern California, we would probably see Alicia Silverstone, one of the most vocal and well-known plant-based-only lifestyle celebrities. So we went. And we saw her dining there, of course. More importantly, though, the food was incredible. I would certainly recommend anyone—omnivores included—to give the place a chance: Order a kelp noodlecabbage-mango Rainbow Bowl followed by a brownie bowl and feel like you will never have the need to eat again. Downtown Blackbird Kitchen & Beer Gallery Blackbird is back with chefowner Carina Lampkin again at the helm. It’s located in its original space with a similar aesthetic, though with more focus on beer and bar food to better complement the seafood-inspired dinner menu.

A burger served with house pickles, seven-day house-cured bacon, cheddar and sweet ’n’ chivey “awesome sauce” make for one of the city’s best burgers, no question. Chowder fries, however, are nifty in theory— fries covered in bay shrimp, bacon and parsley, then doused with chowder. It’s a play on poutine, but a lack of acid and serious sogginess issues mar it from being a landmark dish.

Midtown Block Butcher Bar This place serves the holy trinity of European cuisine: meat, cheese and alcoholic beverages. Most of its boards and plates are balanced using three basic tastes: salty (meats and cheeses), sweet (honey and jam) and sour (pickles and vinegar). The charcuterie boards impress visually and on the tongue. A recent selection included shaved almonds, neat piles of meat,

mustard, pickled cauliflower and beets, served with small slices of bread. The ’njuda sandwich is startlingly spicy and salty, with rich melted cheese and ground meat spread between pressed slices of bread. Or try the pressed serrano ham, manchego cheese, arugula and salsa sandwich—it’s like a cross between a cubano, a breakfast panini and a torta. Elsewhere on the menu there are fine cocktails, an intimidating whiskey list, and a small but diverse selection of beer and wine, both regional and international.

This should not be read as an insult. The menu runs with salads, sandwiches, mains and appetizers—however, the highlight is the generous array of mussels served in both modern and classic fashion.

The épicé mussels are served in a thick tomato sauce with a rumbling chili-garlic heat.

Coconut-broth mussels are sweet and tangy and worth a visit. A white-anchovy tartelette with shredded fennel and leek dazzles—it’s the sort of light food welcomed in tripledigit heat. The puff pastry it sits on is a means to an end.

Branzino cooked en papillote is also a thing of beauty: light, flaky and served with wisps of lemon and fennel. The wine selection is limited, however, the house white is affordable

Der Biergarten This spot is a slightly quirky, low-key place with only nine food items on the menu: four appetizer-style options, four sandwich-type offerings and a sausage platter, plus about 30 cold ones on tap. Patrons order from a building that was built from a couple of cargo containers and dine outdoors on communal benches, traditional German biergarten style. The Derfinater Dog is a gussied-up hot dog, and despite its seemingly excessive number of toppings, everything

Strings Urban Kitchen This more upscale version of the Gold River-based Strings Italian Cafe chain lands in the Il Fornaio camp, but with a lower price point.

Recommended options include the Bruschetta Rustico, with chunky toasts layered with seasoned cheese, grape tomatoes, basil and balsamic vinegar. With less garlic than many versions, it’s a delicious and date-friendly choice.

Pizzas are offered at 7 or 16 inches, with lots of optional additions. A small Pomodoro Mozzarella, with sliced tomatoes and marinara, was serviceable with mediumthick crust and plentiful toppings. A signature frutti di mare pie with shrimp, scallops, mussels and seafood sauce is a more unique take on the category. There are also quite a few vegetarian choices, including Vegetale de las Casa. Eggplant, peppers,

zucchini and other veg are sautéed in oil and tossed with Parmesan and Gorgonzola. For dessert, try the tiramisu, with sprightly ladyfinger sponge cake and an airy mascarpone topped with cocoa and cinnamon. Tidbit Catering & Gelateria Chef Eric Lee has crafted an eclectic, bargain-friendly menu. Fried calamari are lightly seasoned with a crispy exterior and served with a marinara-ish bland sauce.

A carrot-and-ginger soup possesses a slow burn, and a chicken-lettuce wrap is sophisticated: a modest portion of food of moderate size that’s highlighted with slivers of cucumber and a shaking of vinegar. The frozen bits, however are the real winners.

Gelato and sorbet are both available in astounding offthe-cuff flavors that mostly draw inspiration from Asian cuisines. A vanilla-and-adzuki-bean gelato tastes sweet and earthy, with a flavor reminiscent to Chinese moon cakes. A nutty soy-based black-sesame-seed gelato is as rustic and charming as your favorite Instagram filter.

here travels a path between standard and inventive. Creamcheese wontons, for example, aren’t the epitome of culinary Southeast Asian traditions, but damn it if they aren’t delightful. Soft cream cheese and chives in a crispy wrapper and served with a sweet chili sauce?

Nothing wrong with that. The chicken larb—a spicy mincedmeat salad—is fragrant and intense. Mint, chilies, basil and iceberg lettuce are drenched in a spicy lime dressing punctuated with a heavy hand of fish sauce. The Coconut has warnings in its menu about which dishes are spicy, but unless you’re a newborn kitten, trembling and mewling, you might not even be aware of the chilies in your food. served a tasteful purpose. The mayo and garlic sauce helped moisten a somewhat dry roll, and the bacon added saltiness, which balanced the sweetness of cream cheese and barbecue sauce. The pretzel disappointed by being a bit on the flaky and brittle side. The sausage platter was the best item on the menu: a pork sausage, chicken sausage, and a veal-and-pork sausage—much more plump, juicy and flavorful than the frankfurters—served alongside piles of sauerkraut and German potato salad. Chef Jacob Carriker serves Southern staples such as pulled pork, brisket and ribs, plus the very California addition of smoked tri-tip. There’s also chicken and trout—all smoked in a 7-foot hand-forged steel behemoth. All the meats are dry rubbed and served without sauce, which can be added at the table from a choice of four: house, spicy, Kentucky mustard-based and Carolina vinegar-based. The pulled-pork sandwich is served on a hefty bun topped with coleslaw. The meat is moist, smoky and falling apart with tenderness. The half-chicken, from Mary’s Free Range brand, is a bit dry, but benefits from a shot of sauce. The tri-tip is well-smoked, but not as good as the brisket, although it still makes for a very nice addition to the Market salad, with baby greens, grilled zucchini and onions, and cornbread croutons. South Sac Bodhi Bowl This Vietnamese eatery’s menu is all vegetarian and mostly vegan, with plenty of high notes. The Heavenly Noodle is a can’t-go-wrong salad comprising snow-white vermicelli noodles with cooling mint, cucumber slices, houseroasted peanuts and jagged pieces of faux beef. The “beef” actually is slightly sweet, plenty umami and pleasantly inoffensive, as far as fake meat goes. Nearly everything

here has a faux-meat product or tofu element. So, sorry diners with soy allergies—it can’t even be escaped in the papaya salad. Not an issue?

Soldier on with the Hot & Sour soup, a not-too spicy sunsetorange broth that teems with a tomatoey and citrus flavor, chunks of pineapple, semicircles of trumpet mushrooms, cubes of fried tofu and slices of faux crab. Or, try the stir-fried Eight Fold Path. It features al dente celery, red bell pepper and triangles of the most savory, salty, dense tofu perhaps ever. Vietnamese.

Arden/ Carmichael Field House American Sports Pub Launched by the same team that raised Shady Lady Saloon, this spot brings a bit more culinary hope to an often forgotten part of Sacramento. The whiskey burger is a mighty sammich of perfection with smoked Gouda cheese and bacon that serve as excellent counterpoints to the achingly sweet maplebourbon glazed red onions.

Fries-slash-chips arrived pencil-thin and fiercely crispy.

If you visit for brunch, don’t miss the signature bloody mary: a 32-ounce bloody mary that doesn’t skimp on the horseradish. It’s served with skewers of beet-pickled egg, sausage and bacon, tiger prawn, pickled veggies, and the most amazing slider.

Kansai Ramen & Sushi House This place serves its own take on ramen and sushi, with varying degrees of success. The kakuni ramen, which features three thick slices of braised pork belly in lieu of the house ramen’s thin slices of chashu, boasts a nice, sweet marinade; tender consistency; and copious flavor. Be sure to order noodles al dente, and it’ll make for a good option, even with its run-of-the-mill broth. Or amp it up with the spicy tan tan men, which uses a beefy and seafood-tinted soup base that teems with flavor. The sushi rolls here are Western style— a.k.a. loaded with toppings.

Try the Mufasa roll. With crab and avocado on the inside and salmon and sauce outside, it’s particularly tasty, seasoned in sesame oil and baked—a somewhat unusual technique for sushi. Japanese. 2992 65th St.,

The Kitchen Diners here don’t receive a menu: They receive a program, divided into seven acts, and, yes, there’s an intermission. Guests all eat together, like a reservationsonly giant dinner party, dining on seasonal dishes such as chilled, minty pea soup, served with creamy pea pudding, cured scallops and Sterling Caviar. often best quaffed alongside a well-crafted meal. Pangaea Bier Cafe recently stepped up its food game to satisfy that need with a revamped menu that includes an ever-changing rotation of seasonal, slightly upscale pub food.

Try the Buffalo wings: They’re deeply flavorful fried morsels with a thick glaze of goodness.

The mac ’n’ cheese is creamy, with a bit of beer in the sauce and a crunchy topping of herbflecked breadcrumbs. The sliders are gorgeous little mouthfuls with Tillamook cheddar and house-made pickles. They leave you wanting more, which is exactly what you get with the main-course cheeseburger, one of the best we’ve had in ages.

Made from a custom blend of brisket and chuck, this is a juicy patty that holds together, yet bursts with flavor. The locally made brioche bun bears up well, and the house pickles and cheddar simply gild the lily.

Fair Oaks Yui Marlu Yui Marlu serves up California rolls, plus other American-style makizushi, but its mastery lies in Japanesestyle sushi and an assortment of other traditional fare. Here, the omakase was the pièce de résistance—one of those dishes that everyone stares at when it comes out of the kitchen. It looks like a flashy Dali-esque painting, with raw fish piled into small flower patterns atop scallop shells and a bed of microgreens, dollops of sauce, piles of ginger, slender slices of fried plantains sticking out upwards of 6 inches from the plate, and slices of lemon, radish and cucumber. And it tastes as surreal as it looks: The fish is fresh, fleshy and flavorful. The Rainbow roll and the Linda roll are like most American-style rolls served locally, but better. Ice cream update!

Given the heat of July, ice cream is a pretty important food in my diet right now. In honor of the refreshing frozen treat, the following are a few scoops of ice-cream-related developments. This first one is old news: Here’s the Scoop! ice-cream shop, a haven for Gunther’s Ice Cream, fruit freezes and vegan-friendly soy ice cream closed last year.

In its place is Sweets and Sugars (3051 Freeport Boulevard) a Mexicanstyle desert place serving mangonadas, made with Gunther’s mango fruit freeze; flan; ice cream; fruit cocktails; and raspados, Mexicanstyle shaved ice. Next up, Baker’s Donuts (5880 Florin Road) has unveiled on its Instagram page (www.instagram.com/bakersdonuts) evidence that it’s currently experimenting with ice-cream-filled doughnuts.

Flavors that have appeared so far include ube (purple yam), pandan and vanilla. Lastly, the Sacramento Walking Sticks (www.sacramento walkingsticks.org) will host its annual Ice Cream Walk (Vic’s Ice Cream to Gunther’s) on August 6, and August 7.

You’re not paranoid, you’re frightened, and that’s understandable.

Your husband lied to you (that’s disturbing). He nurtured a secret addiction to a dangerous drug (that’s alarming). You knew something was wrong (that’s good). You asked your man for details (that’s smart).

Love does not require you to believe something that you know is a lie. It was your codependency that invited you to believe your husband when your intuition told you he was lying.

You chose to believe his responses because you love him. (Oops! Cue the sound of a four-wheeler screeching to a halt on a dark two-lane road.) It’s impossible to trust your husband right now because you don’t trust yourself anymore. And you don’t trust yourself because when your intuition raised red flags, you ignored those warnings.

I understand. You wanted to be wrong because the idea that your husband might be cheating on you or destroying your marriage or harming himself was too much to bear. When you found out he was betraying himself, the marriage and you, your heart broke. But you will love and trust again, have no doubt.

Trust grows as our capacity for radical honesty grows. So let’s honor the truth: Love does not require you to believe something that you know is a lie. It was your codependency that invited you to believe your husband when your

Intuition is divine awareness. Don’t confuse it with instinct, which is sensory information gathered primarily at the behest of our fears.

Strengthen your intuition through silent meditation. Cultivating inner silence encourages us to hear intuition’s gentle voice, instead of the histrionics of our unhealthy ego or our instinct’s fear-bred directives.

You can grow out of this paragraph of your life and into the next chapter by forgiving yourself.

Acknowledge the codependent behaviors that supported your husband’s addiction. Forgive your husband for his verbal abuse, gossip and unkindness under the influence.

Embrace the idea that you failed at having a relationship with an addict.

Be grateful that your husband is now failing at being an addict. Enter into a relationship with your man, as he is now. When you stop living in the past, you will turn the page on your suffering and be free. That doesn’t mean you should ignore your pain, but don’t cling to it, either. It doesn’t define you. A 12-step group, like Al-Anon or Co-Dependents Anonymous, can help.

My partner looks at attractive women when we are together. He says no one else he’s dated ever mentioned it. I find this hard to believe. I’m on the verge of suggesting that we take a break. However, some people say women need to be comfortable with our men looking at other women. What do you think?

Newman, married to actress Joanne Woodward, famously said, “Why go out for hamburger when you have steak at home?” That’s devotion. Revolution of the mind Marat/Sade From the moment you enter the cavernous California Stage Theater, it’s evident that you’re about to witness a major theatrical spectacle. The large stage is a by Patti Roberts remarkable marble-and-tile rendering of a mental asylum during and after the French Revolution, and, as the actors enter before the lights go up, you notice the striking costumes of the inmates, the “Greek chorus” and the French nobility.

Add to all these elements four musicians, a fog machine, dramatic lighting, clever songs, a talented 20-member cast and a plot that has the Marquis de Sade directing a musical about the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat, and voilà, you get California Stage theater company’s bold resurrection of Peter Weiss’ 1964 cutting-edge Marat/Sade.

4 The Three Musketeers

Villains glower and plot, scoundrels are run through and the valiant musketeers—as well as a sword-swinging little sister—conquer all in Sacramento Shakespeare Festival’s production of Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of The Three Musketeers. With colorful costumes, broadly drawn characters, plenty of humor and a sword fight approximately every seven minutes, this show is exactly why the Sacramento Shakespeare Festival is a community treasure, especially for families hoping to introduce their children to live theater.

Director Christine Nicholson keeps things moving at a rapid clip, as befits an all-out action-adventure. Earnest, young d’Artagnan (Aaron Kitchen), prepared by his father for membership in the exclusive musketeers, is off to Paris with a letter of recommendation. He’s also tasked with delivering his spunky, sword-swinging little sister, Sabine (Julianna Camille Hess), to a convent for her education. Of course, they’re barely out of Gascony before the pair run afoul of swordsmen in the employ of the evil Cardinal Richelieu, and d’Artagnan isn’t in Paris three minutes before he’s offended Porthos (Alejandro Padilla), Athos (Paj Crank) and Aramis (Elliot Herzer), the legendary trio of musketeers.

But they quickly become fast friends and unite to thwart the nasty plots of the cardinal (Mike Sicilia, a scenery-chewing Mr. Burns of a villain) and his henchwoman, Milady (Dale Lisa Flint, in a performance reminiscent of Glenn Close’s Cruella De Vil).

A big congratulations goes to fight choreographer Jes Gonzales, who’s got actors swinging swords, knives, fists and blunt objects. And it’s not all testosterone in action, either; one of the best battle involves two women, one sword and two daggers.

Yes, the show plays fast and loose with history—but then, so did Alexandre Dumas. Its broadly drawn characters and undercurrent of humor will keep even screen-addicted youngsters engaged, elicit laughter from in-the-know parents, and make for a great evening under the Sacramento stars.

Though the story and its overall messages can get a bit convoluted under all the theatrics, songs, the play-within-a-play concept and the playwright’s plotlines, this Marat/Sade is entertaining and absorbing. And the topics of the masses uprising and what happens during and after a revolution, especially when there are philosophical differences among the revolutionaries and their followers, are quite topical.

Director Kent Johnson, with the help of choreographer Lori Russo, keeps the many juggling balls in the air—careful not to let the production overpower the play, or even the play take over the play. He pulls out complexities in his leads, uses the Greek chorus to add a touch of humor, and humanizes the supporting cast without having them become distractions.

Notable leads include Richard Spierto as Sade, Mark Gonzalez as Marat, Sabrina Fiora as Charlotte Corday and Michael R.J. Campbell as Herald. Special kudos go to scene and lighting designer Niels Larsen, stage manager Alexa Slater, and costume designer Jeanette Trimble.

Note: This theater does not have air conditioning, so it can be sweltering in the summer heat. Come prepared to feel what it’s really like in a humid bathhouse asylum. Ω

Forget Downton Abbey. The Strauss clan has been reppin’ European nobility since the early 19th century. A British miniseries back in 1972 called The Strauss Family dramatized the famous Austrian family (Johann Strauss I, Johann Strauss II, Josef Strauss, Edward Strauss and Johann Strauss III), most notable for its contributions to classical music—specifically the waltz. This weekend, fans can celebrate the musical dynasty at the Strauss Festival of Elk Grove. The free festival features nonprofessional waltz and polka troupes in costume, twirling and stepping to waltzes played by a live orchestra, all in front of what the festival’s website calls “elaborate handcrafted sets.” Lawn seating, geese and fireworks add to the romantic outdoor ambience each night. Writer-director Mike Cahill’s first movie Another Earth was a hit at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Personally, I found it ridiculous and laughably by Jim Lane bad, a Plan 9 From Outer Space for the arthouse crowd. Consequently, I expected little from his new one, I Origins. But when the magic works, it works, and this film is a striking work of metaphysical science fiction. The movie blindsided me—appropriately, since it’s actually about being blindsided, surprised by what hits you when you’re looking at (or for) something else.

That’s one of the movie’s clever little ironies: Its hero gets blindsided, even though his life’s work is the study of eyes.

Michael Pitt, cool and subdued, plays Ian Gray, a Columbia University Ph.D. student in molecular biology with a lifelong thing for people’s eyes—each individual’s pair as distinctive and unique as fingerprints. He likes to take pictures of people’s eyes, great staring close-ups of each one. When he meets a masked beauty one night at a campus Halloween party, he photographs her distinctive gold-flecked eyes, then becomes fascinated by her otherworldly quality and unplaceable European accent.

There’s an impulsive sexual episode in a bathroom, but when Ian asks her name, she is gone, abruptly and without a backward glance.

Ian returns to his university research, which is focused (pun intended) on eyes. Not human eyes this time, but the primitive, rudimentary eyes of worms. Vision, Ian says, is the one thing nearly all religions point to as proof of intelligent design in the universe. Working with his research partner Kenny (Steven Yeun) and their lab assistant Karen (Brit Marling, whose cool demeanor matches Pitt’s), Ian sets a goal of seeing if, by gene-splicing and manipulation, he can induce ocular development in a species of worm that has the basic genetic material but has never evolved a sense of sight. Ian believes that by doing so he can disprove the existence of intelligent design—of God, of you will. (The idea that he might do just the opposite, by becoming himself

an intelligent designer, is a subtle irony that never occurs to him.)

Ian is unable to shake the memory of that masked woman at the party with the gold-flecked eyes. With no clue to her identity except the pictures he took of her eyes, he manages—by luck or fate—to find her. She’s Sofi (Astrid Bergès-Frisbey), and she has the sort of impulsive spirituality that Ian lacks. She felt at first sight, she says, that somehow she knew Ian from a past life. “I don’t believe in that,” he tells her. “I’m a scientist, I believe in proof.” Yet something in the cool, methodical Ian responds to this gamine, and he embarks on a delirious affair with her that—not to tell too much—comes to a ghastly end on their wedding day.

While a certain level of horrified disbelief sets in, Cahill picks up his story seven years later. Ian is now Dr. Gray; Karen, the lab assistant, is his wife and expecting their first child. Ian’s grief for Sofi remains beneath his calm surface, which Karen understands and accepts: She is his intellectual match and companion, but Sofi matched him in a way that Karen can’t— spiritually, in fact, though he would never say it.

It is in this intellectual and emotional environment that Ian’s research, his preoccupation with eyes, and his emotional wounds converge, confronting him with ideas and concepts he has always dismissed—when he considered them at all. His research—his search, really—takes him first to rural Iowa, then to India, hardly the place to go to avoid matters spiritual. There he poses a question to a woman he meets on his quest: “What would you do if something scientific disproved your spiritual beliefs?” She turns it back on him: “What would you do if something spiritual disproved your scientific beliefs?”

That’s one of the movie’s clever little ironies: Its hero gets blindsided, even though his life’s work is the study of eyes.

I Origins and its skeptical, questing hero reminded me of Robert Zemeckis’ 1997 Contact, from Carl Sagan’s novel. The central conundrum is much the same: What do you, as a person of science, do when something happens to you, but you can neither prove nor replicate?

There’s a word for that, Mr. Scientist.

It’s called faith, and it’s one of the “more things in heaven and earth” that Hamlet warned Horatio about. Ω

Begin Again

Earth to Echo

Just your average post-apocalyptic apes.

Begin Again is director John Carney’s blatant attempt to recapture the magic of his 2006 surprise hit Once, and if it seems churlish to hold this shiny new product’s feet to that previous film’s lo-fi flame, blame Carney for continuously rubbing our noses in it. He practically begs for the comparison, but everything fresh and original about Once has been recycled and sanitized, and Begin Again is broad and excessive where Once was charming and concise.

The film has an irresistible concept and all the necessary elements to make it work, but instead of trusting that, Carney overloads the film with artifice and plot. Begin Again feels like it should work, but never does, and in that sense, it is a lot like one of those God-awful Rock and Roll Hall of Fame jam bands, where talented entertainers team up to create a tuneless cacophony. A handful of suburban kids (Teo Halm, Brian “Astro” Bradley, Reese Hartwig, Ella Wahlestedt) try to help an alien from another galaxy who has been stranded on Earth, even as the little fellow becomes the subject of an intense search by shadowy government agents. Sound familiar? Director Dave Green and writers Henry Gayden and Andrew Panay ransack the early career of Steven Spielberg—mostly E.T., of course, but with generous helpings of Close Encounters and The Goonies thrown in—giving it a contrived found-video look. The rip-off is so blatant that it makes any discussion of acting (pretty good), special effects (decent) or editing (fair) beside the point: This is the most shameless act of near-plagiarism since Star Trek cribbed that “The Trouble With Tribbles” episode from Robert A. Heinlein’s 1952 sci-fi novel The Rolling Stones. J.L.

A Most Wanted Man

A German anti-terrorism agent (Philip Seymour Hoffman) trails a Chechen who illegally enters Hamburg, and through a local lawyer (Rachel McAdams), petitions a banker (Willem Dafoe) for the fortune deposited years ago by his Russian father. Meanwhile, German police and an American agent (Robin Wright) meddle with Hoffman’s efforts to determine whether the Chechen is a refugee or a terrorist. Adapted from John le Carré’s novel, the movie is his usual sour litany of scheming and betrayal among people whose moral compasses point in different directions—when they exist at all, which is seldom. This one is well-acted but bleaker than usual, thanks to an uninvolving story, a shortage of sympathetic characters, leaden pacing by director Anton Corbijn, and washed-out, dreary cinematography by Benoît Delhomme. Persecuted

A TV evangelist (James Remar) is framed for murder when he refuses to endorse a piece of religion-oriented legislation sponsored by a shifty senator (Bruce Davison).

Writer-director Daniel Lusko’s attempt at a faith-based political thriller is absolutely and utterly botched. The plot makes no sense.

Lusko is such a poor writer that he can’t tell a clear story. (He apparently doesn’t know it—he also wrote the film’s synopsis on IMDb, and it doesn’t match what happens on the screen.)

Is there no person of faith who knows how to make a decent movie? It seems there used to be—remember Soul Surfer? This mess wastes some actors (Fred Dalton Thompson, Dean Stockwell), uses others who shouldn’t work at all (naming no names) and generally makes God’s Not Dead look like Citizen Kane. J.L.

The Purge: Anarchy

In the near future, the annual purge returns, that one night a year when no police or fire departments will respond, no hospitals will be open, and no crime will be punished for 12 hours. This time, instead of being trapped with Ethan Hawke in his house, we’re stranded outside with a motley group who weren’t able to make it to safety. Like the first movie, it’s really just another Saw or Hostel movie with delusions of George Orwell.

Writer-director James DeMonaco salts his script with references to the New Founding Fathers, America reborn as a crime-free dystopia and other pretentious touches. The premise grew stale halfway through the first movie, and DeMonaco made the mistake of killing off Hawke so that now he’s dependent on stars of much lower wattage—Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Matt Reeves’ Dawn is a technically adroit but flavorless sequel to Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes reboot, and it trashes the surprising narrative structure of its predecessor in favor of a more factorytested, post-apocalyptic gloom. Dawn opens 10 years after the end of Rise, and in the decade since, most of humanity has been wiped out by a deadly virus, with only a small band of survivors left. Meanwhile, the supersmart apes are starting to thrive, and Dawn covers the conflict between these two societies in flux. The motion-captured monkey effects are next-generation stuff, a leap forward from the leap forward of Rise, and the various CGI primates have a tactile presence that is legitimately jaw-dropping. Too bad the megapixels are the only things that matter here, and no matter how photo-realistic the monkey fur, a cardboard character is still a cardboard character. D.B.

Sex Tape

A suburban couple (Jason Segel, Cameron Diaz) tries spicing up their love life by recording themselves in the act, but instead of erasing it afterward, they accidentally upload it to the cloud, which then distributes the video to several iPads—including that of the straight-arrow CEO (Rob Lowe) who’s about to hire the wife. Written by Segel, Nicholas Stoller and Kate Angelo and directed by Jake Kasdan, this risqué comedy is raunchy on the surface but surprisingly sweet at the center. It sags badly in the middle, but is pretty funny on both ends. It leaves us laughing, so we forgive the 20 minutes or so that tried our patience. The movie’s cleverest joke passes almost unnoticed: the casting of Lowe, who had a sex-tape problem of his own back in 1988. Also cast are Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper and Jack Black in an unbilled cameo as a porn-site operator. J.L.

Snowpiercer

In the not-too-distant future of Joon-ho Bong’s meditative and thrilling Snowpiercer, a failed global-warming experiment has frozen the entire planet, rendering it uninhabitable. Eighteen years later, the remains of humanity live on a high-speed supertrain where a cruel class divide has developed, with the privileged class living up front, and the most destitute and exploitable people in the caboose.

The setup may be high-concept times a thousand, but the obviousness of the symbolism (the train is the world, the passengers are humanity, and we’re done here) is so inextricably interwoven with the forward momentum of the plot and so well complemented by Joon-ho’s comic-book style and sick humor, you can’t help but buy in.

Joon-ho previously made The Host, a monster movie that both satisfied and sabotaged the expectations of the genre, and he does the same thing with futuristic sci-fi in Snowpiercer. D.B.

Tammy

A fast-food worker (Melissa McCarthy) gets fired for being an unreliable slob, then comes home to find her husband having a romantic dinner with another woman (Toni Collette, shamefully wasted). At the end of her rope, she sets out with her alcoholic grandmother (Susan Sarandon) on a road trip to Niagara Falls. Co-written by McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone (who also directed), the movie is as disorderly and obnoxious as its title character.

Meanwhile, a top-flight supporting cast (Allison Janney, Gary Cole, Kathy Bates, Sandra Oh, Dan Aykroyd) has little to do but stand watching the star thrash around, then line up at the end for an unconvincing group hug. McCarthy often shines as a supporting actress (remember

Bridesmaids?), but as a star, her bag of tricks is beginning to look pretty shallow. J.L.

Third Person

Writer-director Paul Haggis interlaces three stories: A famous novelist and his journalist lover in Paris (Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde), an American businessman and a Romanian refugee in Rome (Adrien Brody, Moran Atias), and an emotionally unstable woman and her vindictive ex-husband in New York (Mila Kunis, James Franco). The stories echo and reflect each other, but they don’t intersect in the same obvious way as Haggis’ 2005 Oscar-winner Crash.

Themes morph and recur—deception, betrayal, children in jeopardy—until we wonder if all (or any) of the stories are happening in “reality.”

Haggis keeps us guessing—and leaves us guessing, for that matter. His movie may annoy and alienate some, but others will find it fascinating and hard to shake when the lights come up. J.L.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Where to start? The American flag. “I just got picked up by Red Bull.” Magic hour on every point of the globe, all of the time, always.

“These alien guns kick ass!” Transformium.

“What we do here is science.” Monument Valley.

“Mission accomplished.” Action scenes set in slums. King Arthur, high-school football and the Holocaust. “It’s sucking up metal and dropping it!” Creepy, daddy-daughter sex anxiety. “I’m a wicked warrior robot.” Product placement for Bud Light and automatic weaponry. “Don’t bitch out on me! Are you gonna bitch out on me?” Mark Wahlberg wears glasses to pass as a scientist in this world, and it works. “Algorithms! Math!” In short, this fourth installment of Michael Bay’s long-form paean to soullessness is better than some of its predecessors and worse than others, but God only knows which ones or why. D.B.

Wish I Was Here

A struggling actor (Zach Braff) tries home-schooling his kids when his ailing father (Mandy Patinkin) can no longer pay for their private school. Director, star and co-writer (with his brother Adam J. Braff) Braff’s movie is a labor of love on all levels, sweetly disarming in its desire to please and uplift. The script is more than a little scattershot and unfocused, but that’s not a bug, it’s a feature: The hero’s life is similarly unfocused, and undertaking a free-form education for his son (Pierce Gagnon) and daughter (Joey King) helps bring clarity to his own life, and to his relationship with his dad, his emotionally stunted brother (Josh Gad) and his supportive wife (Kate Hudson). The movie piles episode on episode like a game of Tetris, each interlocking with the others in a quirky and satisfying way. J.L.

Darkness is as darkness does Yoodoo Park talks Grmln, symbolism and workout music Yoodoo Park does not believe in maintaining the status quo. One listen to his most recent effort, 2013’s Empire, released under the moniker by Brian Palmer Grmln—an album that marks a dramatic shift away from the more laid-back, dreamy aesthetics of Park’s debut EP Explore—confirms this.

“I was getting bored of writing that type of music,” Park says of the EP. “I wasn’t really straining to [make] that kind of music. … I wanted to change things up.”

“It’s definitely going to be a lot darker and heavier compared to my other material,” he says.

The reason for the latest creative shift is, to say the least, amusing, “I pretty much only listen to music when I work out, so that’s probably why I’ve been writing heavier music. … [It’s] more like workout music,” Park says with a laugh.

“I guess it could be a subconscious thing, because I’ve been so exposed to that type of music this whole time.”

This is part of what makes Park’s Grmln so interesting— there’s always the possibility of having a curve ball thrown, and so listeners must stay alert.

Not content to be labeled as pop or alternative or even as a singer-songwriter, Park’s focus seems to be on just going wherever the hell the music takes him during a given season of his life. Even if that means using somewhat unconventional methods to get a point across in a song, as he does on Empire’s crunchy rocker “Hand Pistol.”

“I like using symbolism, and here, it’s a gun,” he says. “It’s about how people get pressured into finding someone, and then it ends up being a one-way street, where one person puts too much time and effort into the other. The gun symbolizes pulling the trigger, and whether they should go with it or not.”

Park says he’s happy with his creative direction and looks forward to the release of Soon Away, and even though he feels his sound is taking a turn for the darker, he also knows that is just his assessment of the situation.

Change it up he did. Over the course of Empire’s nine songs, Park, who performs with a band, introduces listeners to something more akin to Jimmy Eat World or Blink-182 (with a touch of ’90s-era alternative thrown in for good measure on tracks like “Summer Days”) and less like the melodic dream-pop tracks which populated that previously released EP. Recorded during breaks from his sophomore year at UC Santa Cruz, Empire sounds as though it’s as much about engaging the artist’s musical preferences as it is about giving fans a more engaging live experience.

“I didn’t necessarily want a challenge; it was that I had more fun playing this type of music than what I was making before,” Park says. “For recording purposes, it’s easier to make the kind of music I was making, but live, it’s harder for people to get into that.”

Park says he’s not content to stop here, either. Grmln fans who have been paying attention to the artist’s Facebook page know to expect a new album, Soon Away, in September. Details about the project remain sketchy, but Park confirms that the switch from dream pop to pop punk is not the end of his creative evolution.

Empire sounds as though it’s as much about engaging the artist’s musical preferences as it is about giving fans a more engaging live experience.

“Musically, the album is still poppy to an extent, but it’s becoming darker and moodier, like I am,” he says. “But that’s just my opinion.

It might sound really happy to somebody else.”Ω

Mullets, dreams and PMS-driven punk So much string: Two five-piece bluegrass bands played back-to-back at Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub last Tuesday night, bringing with them an incredible mullet, lots of plaid, some bare feet and more strings than I care to count.

Whiskey Shivers from Austin, Texas, started things off with serious speed. All five members took turns singing—a proven challenge for the sound engineer—and the washboard player wore a mesmerizing chest tattoo of Texas encased in planetary rings. Plus the opener contained that aforementioned mullet.

My energy sadly plummeted a bit during headliner the Infamous Stringdusters’ set. Clearly these five Virginian men are brilliant musicians.

On banjo, fiddle, upright bass, dobro and guitar, they all sounded like virtuosos, loosely playing their songs in favor of long, improvisational interludes.

It was as experimental and crafty as bluegrass gets. There wasn’t any foot stompin’ or drunken dancing. Rather, folks quietly listened, swayed and clapped on queue. But I guess I like my country music less progressive and more rowdy. Dirty, even.

And I wasn’t alone. After about an hour, the Stringdusters broke for intermission, and much of the crowd flew to the back patio, chatting, lighting up bowls and not realizing that the band was already back onstage.

Personal favorites include “How Do Girls Even Do It?” and “I Only Fucked You as a Joke” for obvious reasons. The latter got the crowd of about 30 really moving, probably because it was so relatable.

Lisa Prank, meanwhile, delivered a fun, short, pop-punk set completely solo. Well, besides the gnome and the drum machine, her “perfect bandmate who should just fuck up already.” She ended with an appropriate cover of Blink-182’s “Dammit.”

Calling dreamers: If your summer has been severely lacking in all-night electronic dance parties surrounded by trees, consider the Stilldream Festival.

From July 31, through August 4, the 14th annual festival takes over the entire—albeit, tiny—town of Belden, just east of Quincy and two hours north of Sacramento.

And it’s actually a homegrown festival. Paul Plescov, a.k.a. Gamma, a local producer, is one of the founding organizers. Around Sacramento, he throws events featuring both area and touring talent from the underground electronic dance music scene. For those, follow the Stilldream Facebook page (www.facebook.com/stilldream. festival)—recent parties have been held at Midtown BarFly. Up in the beautiful Sierra Nevada, headliners will include producers Odesza and Joker. Seattle duo Odesza is a major name in the underground electronic world, nabbing slots at other major events like the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Sasquatch! Music Festival. Joker is the stage name for the English Liam McLean, who leans toward dubstep and grime. One of Sacramento’s stalwart electronic producers, Tha Fruitbat, will also perform.

Alex and Allyson Grey, national leaders in spiritual and psychedelic art as founders of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, top the lineup on festival posters, proving Stilldream is more than music. Organizers describe it as a gathering about community, nature and consciousness, too.

Photos from past years depict a weekend full of gorgeous art, neon lights and crazy costumes. Plus a dome with activities such as yoga, hula-hooping, poi, slacklining, meditation and henna. Grrrls: Seattle’s Childbirth and Lisa Prank wound down their West Coast tour in Davis. It was carefully planned around their synchronized ovulation cycles.

“This song is about being more fertile than someone, which is all of us, because we’re ovulating right now,” Childbirth’s Julia Shapiro said.

See? The trio wore hospital gowns.

The band sold cassettes. A gnome hung out with the amps. Heavy distortion, muffled vocals, wild hair. The night in Third Space Art Collective’s sparse warehouse screamed hilarious, feminist punk rock.

Childbirth is kind of a femme, punk supergroup too, with members from other brilliantly named bands Chastity Belt, Pony Time and Tacocat.

It sped through a set of one- to twominute songs that dripped with crass irony and sarcasm. The song “Breast Coast” was inspired by surf-rock band Best Coast, and was “about going to the beach and loving your boyfriend.”

The nice thing about Connecticut noise-rock duo Magik Markers is that it is something of an anachronism, seemingly unconcerned NOISE ROCK with electronic beeps and charismaticfrontwoman things like making eye contact.

Formed in 2001, the band’s long discography of noise rock sounding something like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs by way of Nirvana is proof of its obstinance (its former bassist left the band to pursue her dream of ventriloquism, which is a special kind of stubbornness, I say). The music is brooding, sexy and grimy—just the thing for listeners in search of something that’s a little threadbare in the best kind of way. 1815 19th Street, http://magikmarkers.tumblr.com.

Somehow, it’s already the end of the Concerts in the Park season. Rockers the Brodys and Jeremy Briggs top the evening’s lineup, but local favorite the Kimberly Trip should also be a serious draw. The band’s quirky, new-wave, power-pop style has been around for more than a decade—Friday will mark its 500th show—but lately, the Kimberly Trip has been experimenting with more synth and other electronica elements.

And the band says its ninth record, I’m All Outta Bubblegum, is more focused on NEW WAVE snarky vocals and less on elaborate soundscapes.

VH1’s popular That Metal Show is bringing a live version of the program to town.

Featured bands include Anthrax—one of the so-called Big Four of thrash metal— plus funk-metal pioneers Living Colour, and vocalist Corey Taylor of Slipknot and METAL Stone Sour. Starlite Lounge, 9 p.m., $15 The Starlite Lounge has quietly become the best venue around Sacramento to see underground metal as of late, and this week’s show with Oregon noisemongers Yob is no exception. One listen to any Yob record (my favorite is 2009’s The Great Cessation) will convert any fan of cerebral metal into their corner. And while the band enjoyed short runs on both Metal Blade DOOM METAL Records and Profound Lore Records, both great labels in their own right, having a September 2014 release on Neurot Recordings couldn’t be any more apropos.

Over his 50-year career, he’s co-written a ton of incredible rock ’n’ roll tunes with his Rolling Stones bandmate Keith Richards (also surprisingly alive and rocking hard at age 70). Rather than try to cram 71 candles onto a cake, Old Ironsides is celebrating Jagger’s birthday with a tribute show. Eight local musicians (and bands)—including Jem & Scout, the Orange Scene (pictured), ROCK South Lot, William Mylar, Swahili Passion—will be covering their favorite Stones tunes. Local bands have been trying to figure out how to lure concertgoers to their shows for years. While it would seem like hosting free INDUSTRIAL shows would be the best option, many bands have failed both financially and with low attendance numbers. Kill the Precedent, which features a veritable who’s who of the punk and metal scene, has been drawing bigger numbers than most through sheer promotion and great live shows. KTP’s latest release, Dialogues With the Dead, benefits from the group’s two juxtaposing lead vocalists and an onslaught of KMFDM-esque riffage. Prepare to be inundated with crazy visuals and an aural onslaught. The Snobs and Storytellers are also on the bill. 1400 Alhambra Boulevard, www.facebook.com/killtheprecedent.

Over the years, Chatham County Line’s balance of bluegrass style and modern sensibilities has shifted. The music’s themes were always less rooted in the past than timeless issues of fidelity, hope and personal purpose.

Over the last 15 years the arrangements have also migrated toward a modern (’60s or ’70s, anyway) pop-rock manner. Tempos have moderated and prove moodier than traditional Appalachia. What remains steadfast is the BLUEGRASS acoustic instrumentation, four-part harmony and old-time radio single-microphone performances. It’s quite something to see CCL leaning into the mic to harmonize while playing their instruments furiously. Chicken and dumplings is a traditional comfort food with many variations and a long history.

Chicken & Dumpling, however, is the Davis acoustic blues duo of Charles “Chicken” Oriel and Julia “Dumpling” Simon. While the pair’s ACOUSTIC BLUES history may not be as long as that of the comfort food, Oriel and Simon reach deep into the archives to perform classics like Robert Johnson’s “Malted Milk,” Mississippi John Hurt’s “Richland Woman Blues” and Memphis Minnie’s “In My Girlish Days.” With Oriel on guitar, Simon on bass and both sharing vocal duties, they don’t shy from contemporary folk songs like Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright” or George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” either. 1001 R Street, www.chickenanddumpling.net.

Green thumb I hear Los Angeles has a farmers market for marijuana.

How cool is that?

—Mr. Hella Green Jeans Way cool. Too bad the city of Los Angeles is trying to shut the market down.

A recap: This past Fourth of July weekend, West Coast Collective held a medical-marijuana farmers market in a warehouse behind its dispensary. It worked just like any other farmers market: The BEALUM growers set up tables to display their wares, and

by NGAIO patients got a chance to meet with and purchase from the people growing their medicine. The market was a success (a huge crowd with many patients saying a sk420@ ne wsreview.c om they really appreciate the vibe and the low prices), so they held another one the following week.

Of course, the city of Los Angeles won’t’13stand for it.

Last week, L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer sought and received an injunction to force the farmers market to close. Sad news for now, but I am sure the market will reopen somewhere else soon.

By the way, cannabis farmers markets aren’t a new thing. There used to be one in Sacramento a few years ago.

And before Washington legalized cannabis, there were farmers markets all over, especially in the Seattle and Tacoma area. Cannabis farmers markets are great; it’s like visiting a weed bazaar. Plus, buying directly from the growers means that the prices are phenomenal. I never saw any cannabis, even the best Cannabis farmers stuff, for more than $10 markets aren’t a new per gram. Those are like 1989 prices. thing. There used to be We should actually be one in Sacramento encouraging more things like this. The solution seems a few years ago. pretty simple: Find a spot, designate it as the only farmers market allowed in L.A., and make sure everyone pays their marijuana sales taxes, and leave them alone.

It’s not rocket science.

As marijuana becomes more and more legal, the parallels between weed and wine become more and more apparent. People like to go around and look at different kinds of marijuana and hear the story of the plant, just like people like to go to wine tastings and meet the vintner and hear about the grapes that were planted in 1923 from a cutting of an old French vine someone’s grandma smuggled in during prohibition. Whether it’s a wine tasting or a “kind” tasting, it’s the same sort of thing. Maybe Los Angeles could try to be ahead of the curve and on the right side of history. As if.

—Willie Wonkette Eh. S.B. 1262 would regulate MMJ dispensaries in a California. It has garnered some support on both sides of the aisle. I can’t say I am a fan. It doesn’t prevent cities from banning collectives (to be fair, no legislation has done that, not even in Washington or Colorado). Also, it would essentially cut out all of the outdoor growers in the northern counties unless they followed the regulations and paid the fees. Good luck getting the outlaw hippies to go along with that. Seems a bit unworkable to me. I say let’s get a good legalization initiative on the ballot for 2016 and end this legislative BS. Ω

Whether you want to know the history of cannabis in America, the health benefits of medical marijuana, how to grow a really nice plant or maybe you just need some good recipes, books are your friends.

The bible of cannabis books is “The Emperor Wears No Clothes” by cannabis activism pioneer Jack Herer (www.jackherer.com/thebook). This book gives a detailed history of the cannabis plant and its many uses, including rope and sails, concrete and fuel. And medicine. This book also discusses the history of cannabis prohibition and why the cannabis plant has been illegal in the U.S. for more than 70 years.

“Marijuana: Gateway to Health” by Clint Werner (www. marijuanagatewaytohealth.com) is chock-full of research on just about

every medical application of marijuana there is. San Francisco-based researcher Werner goes in-depth about marijuana’s short- and longterm effects, and whether or not marijuana is right for you.

Other books about marijuana can be found all over. There are two Bay Area-based printing companies that specialize in canna-centric publishing.

The first: Quick Trading Company (www.quicktrading.com), founded by ganja guru Ed Rosenthal, publishes strain guides, pest control reference books and more. The second: Green Candy Press (www.greencandypress. com/drugsindex.html) publishes books aimed at more experienced growers and some really cool coffeetable tomes.

Well, you could develop a relationship with an admirable older man who is an inspiring role model. You could read books by men whose work stirs you to actualize your own potentials. Paul Cezanne’s painting “The Artist’s Sister” was on display at a museum in Aix-en-Provence, France. Then, a lucky event occurred: It was stolen. When it was finally recovered months later, it had been ripped out of its frame. An art restorer who was commissioned to repair it discovered that there was a previously unknown Cezanne painting on the back of the canvas. As a result, the appraisal of the original piece rose $75,000. Now both sides are on view at the St. Louis City Art Museum. I foresee a comparable progression in your life, Pisces. Pride, parades and politics After earning a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, Gayle E. Pitman moved to Sacramento in 2001 to teach psychology and women’s studies courses at Sacramento City College, including Psychology of Sexual Orientation, a class she designed. She’s also an author: Pitman wrote her first book, 2011’s Backdrop: The Politics and Personalities Behind Sexual Orientation Research, after a suggestion from one of her students. This spring, the American Psychological Association’s Magination Press published This Day in June ($14.95), a children’s book featuring a gay-pride parade as seen through a child’s eyes.

Pitman says the book offers a “fun, childlike description” of what might typically be found at such events. And, like her first book, this one was partially inspired by students, many of whom she says were unfamiliar with the history and culture of the LGBT community.

How has the book been received?

I’ve had conversations and phone calls with people, adults mostly, who’ve read the book and had really an emotional response to it. One person who called me, a director of an LGBT center, told me that she’d read the book and cried, and she thanked me for writing the book.

Is it a children’s book for adults?

It truly is a book for children. However, there is a reading guide with information about LGBT history and culture, and this is directed toward older children and adults. There is also a note to parents and caregivers about how to talk to kids about sexual orientation and gender identity. There isn’t much out there that gives clear-cut advice about how to talk to kids about this topic, whether you’re LGBT or straight.

Why is the reading guide is so important?

I’d written the reading guide, the section about LGBT history and culture, with my [college] students in mind. Every semester when I teach my sexual-orientation class and I talk about the Stonewall riots [the multiday series of protests that began in June 1969, after patrons of a gay bar fought back during a police raid], maybe one or two will recognize that reference, but many don’t. They don’t know what the pink triangle stands for.

They don’t know that the rainbow flag has a history to it. They may know something about Harvey Milk because of the film.

Increasingly, students of this generation aren’t aware of the magnitude of the AIDS crisis. They know what AIDS is, but they don’t know from a narrative, historical perspective the scope and the magnitude of the issue and the inaction, at |

least at the beginning, of the government.

The reading guide isn’t comprehensive, but it gives people some context as to why these certain elements and symbols appear in pride celebrations.

Is it possible to move forward without understanding the past?

No, I don’t think so. I compare it to the third wave of feminism. The whole crux of that was that third wavers, like myself, were people who benefitted from the hard work and the heavy lifting of the second wavers. … I see that in the LGBT movement today.

How so?

We have a group of folks who have benefited enormously that, as of now, they are not in danger of being diagnosed with homosexuality and being thrown into an institution. ... I think it’s so important to remember the past and to keep that in mind because it’s so easy to go back there. … You look at a group like ACT UP [AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, an activist group committed to ending the spread of AIDS which worked with the Food and Drug Administration and pharmaceutical companies to help get treatment drugs on the market] for example. They took guerrilla grassroots activism to a whole new level, and they were willing to give it their all. LGBT rights have advanced so far since then, which is a great thing. However, today we don’t see that kind of grassroots activism anymore, and that scares me.

How is activism different today?

Today we’re in a culture of technology.

People, especially youth, are increasingly more likely to interact that way than face to face. That limits the type of activism that can happen. I think it’s so important to talk to each other in real time and face to face.

That’s one of the things that I love about pride [parades]. … You need physical people to march in a contingent and hold up a banner, and physical people watching on the sidelines and cheering them on. It’s a form of activism that lives on.

Are the parades generally the same?

I think This Day in June pulls out some of the common elements, but every local community is different. Some parades have more political candidates. Some have more church or spiritual groups that march. Some have more of a transgender presence than others. … Increasingly, pride celebrations have spaces for children and families, although that’s not universal.

What would you like most for people to take from the book?

That LGBT culture is rich, and it has a deep history to it, and it’s fun and exuberant. …

That all of it is about an expression of love and creativity and individuality and integrity, and that none of it is bad. I just see such a need, especially in the children’s book genre focusing on LGBT, for positive, affirming images and reflections. Ω More information on Gayle E.
