Light wail I commute to SN&R on light rail every day. I also take BART and Amtrak to the Bay Area instead of driving. And, when traveling overseas, I ride the Tube and TGVs and even those scary minibuses in North Africa (which often wind up roadside, engulfed in flames!). Mass transit is great. It can save our society. I’m a fan.

But something about public transit doesn’t work in Sacramento.

Conveniently, this month is Regional Transit’s official Ride Transit October campaign. There’s a Twitter contest and giveaways (read more at www.sacrt.com) and even posters on light-rail trains urging riders to keep an eye out for RT general manager Mike Wiley, who will be on buses and trains all month long.

I’ve yet to bump into Wiley, but one of these days, I’ll set up an official interview with the man. In the meantime, let’s explore why more people don’t ride light rail or the bus.

Consider my co-workers: There’s an RT stop less than half-a-block from SN&R’s headquarters. Of the employees here, at least 20 are fellow central-city dwellers and could easily ride RT but opt to drive.

No judging. But let’s keep it real: These short-distance car rides are precisely the type of disposable trips society must eliminate to adapt to climate change.

Buuut: RT can be unpleasant. Want to take your bike on the train? Good luck with that during busy commutes.

Can’t pay $2.50? Sorry, no centralcity fare discount—even if you’re just going one stop. Drugs, poverty, uncleanliness, smartphone thieves— get used to it.

Light rail is relaxing and easy— remember, I’m a fan!—but sometimes it’s awful.

Still, please join me (and Wiley!) and ride this month. We can talk about how to improve mass transit.

It’ll be a blast.

Re “The great education-reform swindle” by Cosmo Garvin (SN&R Bites, October 3): Thanks, SN&R, for caring enough about our children to report on the public-school privatization war going on here in Sacramento. Led by Broad Academy-indoctrinated Jonathan Raymond and a Sacramento City Unified School District board stuffed with people more concerned for their own enrichment than the education of our children, the privatizers have already closed many of our public schools with many more to come unless we stop them.

The simple answer is this: There are four seats on the SCUSD board up for election within a year. We must replace the privateers with citizens who care about public education enough to stop funding private schools with public money and guarantee not to approve one more charter school in Sacramento. If we pay attention, we can reclaim our children’s education from these pirates. Now is the time.

No picnic City threatens decades-old nonprofit for feeding hungry people in a downtown park On Sunday afternoons for more than 20 years, volunteers with the nonprofit Food by Not Bombs have passed out free Nick Miller vegetarian meals to hungry, low-income Sacramentans at downtown’s Cesar ni ckam@ news r evie w.c om Chavez Plaza park.

This month, however, city police interrupted the organization’s feedings and informed volunteers that giving away free meals is illegal.

On October 6, Food Not Bombs volunteer Ani Durst said she and five others arrived at Cesar Chavez like they normally do each Sunday just before 1:30 p.m., when the nonprofit feeds upward of 100 people.

“We started to set up the tables,” she told SN&R, “and then a police officer on a bicycle told us we couldn’t serve food on that day.”

Durst said the officer explained that the city was “drafting an ordinance” that would ban feeding of low-income and homeless people in public parks.

But the city isn’t working on a new law, according to spokeswoman Linda Tucker. “The code has been in place for years,” she explained.

So why are police only now threatening to enforce the laws, even though Food Not Bombs has been operating downtown for two decades?

City police warned that they would confiscate Food Not Bombs’ meals and equipment if the unpaid volunteers tried to serve food or hand out literature. “We didn’t want to have a confrontation at that time, because we didn’t know enough about what [police] were talking about,” Durst said.

A week later, this past Sunday, law enforcement did not stop Food Not Bombs from giving away free food.

Volunteers said they served more than 100 meals.

“The cops were there, but they hung back,” said Davida Douglas, who’s shared food on Sundays in Cesar Chavez going on 14 years. “We had 8

plenty of folks out there supporting, just basically speaking up for folks’ rights to have food to eat.”

But while Food Not Bombs lives for another weekend, the debate over whether it should be legal to feed Sacramento’s hungry residents continues.

City spokeswoman Tucker said, “It isn’t impossible to go ahead and follow the code.” She cited a church group in South Natomas that regularly feeds the hungry with a permit, which costs $90.

“There was no organized effort to go out and target people who are seemingly doing a good thing.”

Linda Tucker city of Sacramento Still, the city’s effort to enforce its feeding laws is new. Earlier this year, Councilman Steve Hansen inquired with city staff about “the feeding of the homeless within City parks,” according to a city memo dated June 11.

But civil-rights attorney Mark Merin, who’s advocated for homeless rights in the past and consulted with Food Not Bombs members last week, said the nonprofit should be exempt from all regulations.

“You can’t require a permit for an organization that is performing a religious function or is political and is doing something that is consistent with its political expression,” he argued. “This attempt to stop something that’s been going on in Sacramento for 20 years will fail.”

Merin said he has notified city leaders that if they try to stop Food Not Bombs, he will “sue to block continued harassment.”

“Groups have a perfect right to organize and demonstrate,” Tucker told SN&R. “The issue here … is food. The code asks that the food be prepackaged, and it also requires that if there are over 50 people at one time, there be a permit.”

Police spokesman Doug Morse told SN&R that “nothing was shut down or removed” when police engaged Food Not Bombs on October 6, and that officers simply were there to educate and hand out fliers about the illegality of homeless feedings. There were no detainees or arrests, he added.

Morse did explain that “there was sort of an Occupy thing going on down there” at Cesar Chavez on that Sunday.

But volunteer Durst says police and the city were focused on getting Food Not Bombs out of Cesar Chavez, and not just targeting an Occupy Wall Street element.

“They were obviously trying to get the whole operation moved out of there,” she said, adding that a police officer suggested Food Not Bombs move its feedings to “near Loaves & Fishes.”

“There was no organized effort to go out and target people who are seemingly doing a good thing. It was more education-focused, to let them know that this is not the ordinance,” city spokeswoman Tucker explained.

Critics, however, question the city’s motive, after 20 years, to now suddenly care about issues such as food poisoning and public health. “I can’t

imagine why, other than that they don’t like homeless people in the downtown area,” Merin said.

Meanwhile, is the city’s threat to stop Food Not Bombs part of a larger, national effort to harrass the 35-yearold nonprofit?

Food Not Bombs co-founder Keith McHenry told SN&R last week that chapters in other cities—including Olympia, Wash.; Santa Monica, Calif.; Worcester, Mass.; and Taos, N.M.—also were shut down or experienced similar law-enforcement threats this month.

“It’s very rare that it’s all the same weekend,” he explained, adding that FNB’s ties to the Occupy Wall Street movement could be a factor.

October’s recent threats come on the heels of actions against volunteers in Boulder, Colo.; Portland, Ore.; Seattle; Raleigh, N.C.; and other cities this past summer, McHenry added.

The co-founder says that even though it’s an odd time to be threatening people who are feeding the poor—what with the government shutdown, cuts to the foodstamps program, and the stoppage of the Women, Infants, and Children, or WIC, program for low-income families—more than 50 cities now have ordinances against such feedings.

Food Not Bombs volunteer Douglas said the city’s priorities are misguided.

“If you’re concerned about the health and well-being of people, then you understand the impact of poor nutrition,” she said. “We’ve been there for 20 years; we’ve never made anyone sick. I just Ω don’t believe it.”

Sacramento police busted a 58-year-old man on suspicion of stealing a car they found him waxing outside of a house on Sunday evening. The conscientious suspect, Brent Grimes, was also charged with possessing cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin.

Police apprehended three other subjects at the home on 34th Street and Temple Avenue.

The local interdiction efforts occurred days after the Sacramento City Council relaxed zoning restrictions for medical-marijuana dispensaries, which proponents believe will improve patient access and public safety, as well as set an example for the region.

“We are impacting not just our area, but surrounding areas around us that are watching how we implement this,” said Canna Care’s Lanette Davies, who noted that El Dorado County opened its door to collectives, in part, because of the evolving mood in Sacramento.

The city’s policy shift affects more than a dozen medical-marijuana collectives that have been in limbo for the past three years. During this time, many dispensaries were forced to close or relocate due to federal enforcement, uncertainties in state law and local stasis.

“We closed for a time … because many of our friends were BEFORE

they are or request modified distance restrictions. In all, 34 dispensaries are affected by the amended codes.

So are their patients.

“You don’t know how hard it is to find your medicine when dispensary after dispensary [is] forced to close,” said Marcia Blount, a medical-cannabis user and president of the Brownie Mary Democratic Club of Sacramento County, whose mission, she said, is to “end the failed war on drugs.”

Speaking of that war, the Sacramento front mostly targets illegal indoor grows.

One raid occurred the morning of Wednesday, October 2, when sheriff’s detectives served a search warrant inside a middle-class subdivision just south of a country club in the unincorporated Vineyard community. Inside the two-story house on Crooked Stick Drive, detectives located indoor marijuana grows totaling 133 plants in both the garage and a downstairs bedroom.

Crush of arena campaigns

Authorities say a gun, drugs and “copious amounts of caustic chemicals” used to cultivate the marijuana were accessible to the two young children living at the residence.

The kids were placed in protective custody, while the home’s two residents—Tong Tran and Anh Huyen Nguyen, both 27—were arrested for possessing and cultivating marijuana for sale, as well as child endangerment.

Two days after the south county raid, sheriff’s deputies and county probation officers checked in on a Rancho Cordova home and struck green gold again.

According to department reports, officers initially encountered some resistance on the part of 29-year-old Justin Philbrook, who “lied to the officers about who was inside,” said Sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa R. Bowman.

Not that it mattered. His probation status allowed officers to enter the residence, where they detained Joshua Frederick Holmboe and Tyler Mickel. Both 24-year-olds are also on probation.

Spotting several ounces of drying marijuana buds on the dining-room table, officers moved into the master bathroom, where they discovered a small marijuana grow. Digital scales and packaging materials were also found. Officers then went to Holmboe’s home nearby and found a separate marijuana grow.

Bowman said authorities seized 119 plants between the two grows, not including loose parts and pieces, like buds or stems.

Along with their own probation-search busts, Sacramento police are investigating the October 13 theft of a pound of marijuana from a good Samaritan who was assaulted by the stranded driver he or she pulled over to help near Altos and Acacia avenues.

Councilman Allen Warren, who supported the zoning amendments, warned that the effort to normalize medical marijuana could hit a setback if those within the community didn’t police themselves. His colleague, Councilman Steve Hansen, said the city should next re-examine its prohibition against outdoor cultivation within the city. Ω

Make room for another arena campaign. Voters for a Fair Arena Deal, a small coalition in favor of increasing residents’ input and decreasing public investment in the new Sacramento Kings arena, officially launched Tuesday morning inside a Midtown coffee shop.

“We’re very troubled by the leveraging of Sacramento’s fiscal future by the plan that’s currently on the table,” VFAD’s Isaac Gonzalez said before a 3 p.m. press conference on the steps of old City Hall. “That’s why a group of residents and business leaders are meeting today to come up with [an] alternate plan.”

According to Craig K. Powell, president of Eye on Sacramento and one of VFAD’s 12 core members, the group

will function separately from Sacramento Taxpayers Opposed to Pork, the anti-arena group whose signaturegathering initiative has been mired in the controversy of secret Seattle funding and paid signature-gatherers from outside the region.

But that doesn’t mean they can ignore STOP altogether.

While they aver to be pro-arena, VFAD is also for the arena ballot initiative. As that was introduced by STOP, VFAD must provide them with the signatures they gather for filing with the city. To ease public concern, only Powell will be able to communicate with STOP via email.

VFAD has also compiled an eight-point code of conduct that includes immediate public disclosure of contributions that are more than $250. The group says it’s received around $10,000 in contributions and was to disclose the “four or five” contributors that have donated more than $250 Tuesday night. (Dave Kempa)

Loss of Innocence Hours after SN&R’s October 10 story on Garden of Innocence National hit stands, the charity that buried 20 miscarried fetuses in Citrus Heights last month was defending a campaign that labels them “abandoned children.”

“This article is basically claiming that these infants that are fetal deaths ... deserve to be in a potters field mixed up with other indigent that are not innocent as they are,” Victor Hipolito Jr., area manager of the local Sierra chapter, wrote in a Facebook post that has since been taken down.

According to the post, the county coroner will hold on to the remains of eight cremated fetuses that GOI Sierra was planning to inter during an October 19 ceremony at Sierra Hills Memorial Park & East Lawn Mortuary. Hipolito said he had “nestled” four of the handwrapped cremains into their urns with a “beanie baby toy” for each.

On Monday, coroner Gregory P. Wyatt told SN&R his office was refining its agreement with the Sierra chapter to apply to “truly abandoned baby cases,”and not hospital stillbirths that can “cause public confusion.” This means that parents who miscarry at hospitals and don’t take the fetuses home will not have them named—and, in many cases, renamed—by Garden of Innocence and buried during multifaith ceremonies.

Meanwhile, co-founder Elissa Davey contended the story mischaracterized the organization she created in 1998.

“We do our work quietly and do not seek media attention,” she wrote in an email to $100 donors.

So, amid this recent flurry of mouth-frothing and hand-wringing over debt, it should be no surprise The Skipper and Mary Ann slice straight to the bottom line.

Given the number of simpleminded folk involved in D.C. politics, The Skipper’s straightforward admonishment seems like it would be, well, simple to comprehend.

Nope.

Even Thurston Howell III’s fortune doesn’t come close to the $16.7 trillion limit on debt federal politicians have imposed on themselves. While such self-restraint is certainly commendable—the ceiling has only been raised 78 times since 1960—$16.7 trillion still constitutes seriously major debt.

If The Skipper were here, he’d be pissed off—a reaction he would share with scads of other Americans. Pissed off not only at the fiscal excesses needed to create a $16.7 trillion ocean of red ink, but also at the irresponsibility of elected officials not getting their gripes off their collective chests and then getting over themselves and getting on with cobbling together some face-saving compromise that gets the J-O-B done.

“Rational people would have solved this problem before now,” California’s treasurer, Bill Lockyer tells SN&R. “Slightly more rational people would solve it before the deadline.”

Lockyer is the statewide office holder whose principal job is Greg Lucas’ state-politics managing the Golden State’s debt, column Capitol which stands at about $130 billion.

Skipper-simple: California gets debt.

Next to the feds, California is a piker when it comes to running up its credit card. A little less than 7.7 percent of the state’s $100 billion general fund pays the annual interest on California’s outstanding debt, which primarily comes from the sale of bonds to build or repair highways and other important public structures, expand transit and preserve wild spaces.

Lockyer has taken advantage of bargain-basement interest rates to refinance some of the state’s nut, lowering those annual payments and freeing up more money for other smart investments, like a kick-ass public-education system.

Gov. Jerry Brown is battering down what he calls California’s “Wall of Debt,” a series of loans, payment deferrals and cheesy fiscal sleights of hand that in 2011, totaled $34.7 billion.

With the support of the Legislature, Brown has chipped away at the wall, knocking it down to $24 billion by the next July. The plan is to shrink the balance to $4.7 billion by mid-2017.

Not exactly headline-grabbing, go-viral stuff. But it’s the kind of conscientiousness taxpayers should prize if only because, at a minimum, it saves money.

Predictions as recently as two years ago said California’s annual debt payment would be 10 percent of the general fund. Lockyer’s refinancing reduced that number. So did the governor and Legislature’s responsible behavior, which led the folks who rate the risk of investing in debt to proclaim California way less of a crapshoot than before. Elected officials acting like grown-ups saved more than $2 billion—without breaking a sweat.

It means one thing—and one thing only—when the D.C. knuckleheads shutter the government they’re supposed to be operating more efficiently, imperil the value of the dollar and risk the timely issuance of safety-net checks to millions of needy Americans just to boost the audience forced to hear their impotent whining about a law that’s already taken effect: They aren’t listening to The Skipper like his little buddy California is. Ω

Recycling schools, rebooting neighborhoods District leaders need to get community involved in deciding its own future How can you help a depressed and blighted community if you don’t ask the community what it wants?

This question occurred to Bites while attending the 7-11 committee meeting for Collis P. Huntington Elementary School last Monday. Maybe a half-dozen members of the public showed up that night.

What’s a “7-11 committee,” you ask? And who cares?

by CoSMo G The 7-11 group will recommend cos mog@ n ewsrev iew.c om whether C.P. Huntington and six other schools, all closed by the Sacramento City Unified School District earlier this year, should be turned into private schools or charter schools or reused for some other public purpose.

The name is arcane, referring to the number of committee members. And the committee’s recommendation is just that—the SCUSD board has the ultimate power. But it’s a big decision, and these are valuable public assets, affecting whole communities.

Unfortunately, SCUSD has done very little effective outreach on school reuse. There’s a link on the district’s website and in its electronic newsletter, which says “7-11 committee meeting” and gives a date. If you click enough times, you can find out more, but as committee member Michael Minnick noted, “Why would you click on it? Unless you were looking for a Slurpee?”

And so, no one showed up. The committee—all appointed members of the public, many connected in some way with education policy or local politics—asked questions of staff, mostly about process. There was a quick tour of the school. A couple of folks spoke on behalf of the private Camellia Waldorf School, which hopes to lease a “surplus” school site. That was the only proposal.

“I’m really disappointed in the outreach,” said SCUSD Board of Education member Diana Rodriguez, who showed up near the end of the meeting. She said she wouldn’t have known about it if she hadn’t happened to see a flier for the meeting posted at another school site earlier that day. “When you have fewer than 10 people show up, we have to get more community input.”

Of course, community input didn’t amount to much when the school-board majority set its mind on closing all these schools (Rodriguez was opposed). And Bites suspects the district and certain board members already know exactly what they plan to do with at least some of the campuses. Doesn’t mean they should be left alone to do it.

The next 7-11 committee meeting is at Fruit Ridge Elementary on October 21, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. So far, the schedule is every Monday at that same time, though it may change.

C.P. Huntington is an interesting spot. It’s wedged in between the Sacramento Executive Airport and the former Campbell Soup plant on 47th Avenue and Franklin Boulevard. Light-rail tracks run right behind the fields. And just above the trees you can see the gleaming water tank at the Campbell plant, though the company logo is painted over now.

That combination—the light rail, the school, the huge swath of developable land nearby—has obvious potential. Does the district see it?

The school closures and the Campbell shutdown were just the latest injuries to a neighborhood ground down by years of disinvestment.

That’s why the North Franklin District Business Association is trying to “reboot” the neighborhood with a new community economic-development plan. In fact, last week, the group announced it landed $10,000 from the California Endowment to launch a series of public meetings, surveys and focus groups, asking residents and business owners to help craft a plan.

“The point of the meetings is to develop a comprehensive perspective and assessment of what’s working and not working in the district,” said North Franklin district director Marti Brown.

The study will likely highlight problems such as the lack of bus lines and banking, and now schools, in the neighborhood. And, of course, the future of the Campbell plant is critical to the future of the neighborhood. The company is reportedly close to making a deal with a new buyer, though the buyer’s name has not yet been made public.

Brown said she’s hopeful the new property owner will engage the North Franklin association about redevelopment of the site, “and seek ways to integrate and connect the site more into the neighborhood and with the adjacent light rail station at 47th Avenue.”

Brown is on to something, seeing potential in a long-neglected neighborhood. Getting the community involved in deciding its own future. It’s something the school district should do, too. Ω

Since the district attorney cannot arrest and prosecute every lawbreaker, he or she must make choices about which laws to enforce and which ones to ignore.

No more sprawl Elk Grove remains one of the fastest-growing cities in the state. Its continued prosperity is good for the county and offers more than just a bedroom community for Sacramento.

That said, it’s also necessary to take a clear look at the current move by the City of Elk Grove to add 8,000 acres to its “sphere of influence.” That’s basically a pre-annexing move, designed to clear the way for future development.

Here’s the problem: Elk Grove already has thousands of undeveloped acres within its borders—enough to last it for the next couple of decades at the current rate of growth.

And then there’s the issue of the land itself. It’s a wildlife corridor and includes Swainson’s hawk nesting areas, as well as habitat for migratory birds.

What’s more, the plan to add this land to Elk Grove’s sphere of influence sends a signal: more sprawl. It will be read loud and clear by everyone, including developers, farmers and wildlife advocates.

We don’t think that’s a signal that Elk Grove wants to send.

Rather than make another move toward sprawl, it’s time for Elk Grove to focus on long-term planning that actually puts the “smart” in smart growth. Elbow room isn’t the answer. What Elk Grove lacks is a central core that provides a truly unique identity. It’s possible to build that without becoming urban; it’s the small-town feel that makes Elk Grove so attractive.

So, we’re urging the Sacramento Local Agency Formation Commission to put a hold on Elk Grove’s plans for expansion on November 6. There’s already room for it to make a good thing better. Ω

Give shelter

In 2010, Sacramento County pulled the plug on the annual Winter Shelter Program, which had provided overnight accommodations for homeless people at Cal Expo during the coldest months. This saved money; the Winter Shelter could cost up to $700,000 a season.

Now, the county kicks in just $150,000 to pay for shelter beds for families. The rest of Sacramento’s homeless population is served through Sacramento Steps Forward, an umbrella organization that coordinates regional services for homeless residents—and it needs money to keep the Winter Sanctuary program going.

It’s worth asking why we are relying on fundraising to meet the needs of our most vulnerable citizens—a task that most of us would see as a legitimate purpose of government. That’s a discussion we ought to have, and we hope to start it soon.

In the meantime, it’s getting colder. The weather is already chilly at night, dipping into the 40s.

The Winter Sanctuary program has local churches donate to sacramento taking turns to provide a hot meal and a safe, warm steps Forward’s Give place to sleep for our homeless neighbors. In addition one day campaign at http://sacrameto to funding this winter’s program, Steps Forward stepsforward.org. hopes to raise enough money to keep the program going year-round.

It’s asking us to donate the cost of one day’s housing in its Give One Day fundraiser. This will provide winter shelter for those people not included in the county-funded family program.

F

rom far away, the water in the 9-acre, rectangular pond at Passmore Ranch looked like it was boiling. Closer up, it sounded like a river rushing over rocks. But it was just the fish.

Ranch foreman Rodolfo “Rudy” Torres had just blown fish food onto the water’s surface, and hundreds of bass were gobbling it up, their tails splashing and churning the water, their mouths wide open.

It was a warm morning, and Michael Passmore, the owner of the 86-acre fish ranch, was sitting in his orange Kubota, a small, all-terrain vehicle, merrily watching his fish.

“Look at that,” Passmore said to a friend. “I love that. Their little Hoovers are open, and they’re just chowing down. Those are happy fish right there. Don’t you love that water sound? I need to just come out with my chair and sit here.”

OK, yes, Michael Passmore is into his fish. This is a man who gave his wife, Vandy, two 140-pound sturgeons a few years ago for Valentine’s Day. For the record, Vandy says she loves her, uh, pets. They’re now close to 200 pounds and are named Sal and Sam, though no one can tell which is which. “I married a fish farmer,” she said. “For better or worse.”

Passmore, however, is no simple fish farmer.

He knew no one when he started, and his only business plan was work hard and see what happens, yet Passmore has become one of the most universally respected—and liked—people in Sacramento’s food universe. His fish, and, even more, the man, have earned an almost stunning loyalty from chefs around the country.

Passmore Ranch, out in the rolling grasslands and low hills near Sloughhouse, has become the gold standard in California for sustainable freshwater-fish producers—so much so that Passmore was featured at the Monterey Bay Aquarium as the example of sustainable fish farming.

And the lineup of chefs who use Passmore fish represent a who’s who of American cooking—including Top Chef Masters names like Rick Moonen in Las Vegas, Cindy Pawlcyn in Napa Valley and Dominique Crenn in San Francisco.

There’s also James Beard Award winner Corey Lee, Dallas star and bad-boy chef John Tesar, and Christopher Kostow of The Restaurant at Meadowood, one of only two California restaurants with three Michelin stars.

Passmore fish is in Sacramento restaurants like The Kitchen, Kru Contemporary Japanese Cuisine, Formoli’s, Mulvaney’s Building & Loan, Enotria Restaurant Wine Bar, Ella Dining Room & Bar, Restaurant Thir13en, and more.

It was also featured at the recent Farm-to-Fork week dinner on the Tower Bridge.

Chefs say Passmore Ranch is creating a new benchmark for cooperation between restaurants and farms, for producing a product exactly the way they want it, and for teaching them how to use the fish.

“He’s the prototype,” said Moonen, one of America’s top seafood chefs and a national leader pushing sustainability. “He’s a pioneer.

He’s expanding what’s in our diet by raising fish not normally available. He’s the example of how to produce great, sustainable fish, and of how to give chefs exactly what we need. His success can teach the industry.”

Does he have any criticisms of Passmore?

“He’s not a particularly snappy dresser,” Moonen said.

And, for chrissakes, chefs are getting tattoos of the Passmore Ranch brand, the number 41 with a circle around it. (It’s from the family cattle ranch in Oklahoma. His grandfather took over in 1941 and used a “41” brand.

involved. Grandfather and grandson tend toward simplicity.)

The list of tattooees includes Edward Martinez, the supremely talented pastry chef now at Tyler Florence’s El Paseo restaurant in Mill Valley, Calif.; Joey Elenterio, the Michelinstarred executive chef at Wayfare Tavern in San Francisco; and Tyler Bond, the sous chef at Enotria in Sacramento.

“It tells you how much everyone loves the guy,” said Enotria executive chef Pajo Bruich.

“He always says, ‘I work for the chefs.’ We never hear that from providers. And his enthusiasm for Sacramento and for food is contagious.”

And does Bruich have a tattoo?

“I have a feeling,” he said, “it’s only a matter of time.”

No plaN, No problem Passmore can’t exactly explain his success or his carefully thought-out plan.

“What plan?” he said. “Mostly, we were trying to keep our heads above water, and sorry about the pun. I keep saying, ‘Sooner or later, we’ll find someone smart enough to run this place.’”

The “place” is not your standard fish farm. The office is a white, 10,000-squarefoot former mansion Passmore bought from a neighbor. (His neighbor built it as his dream home. It’s a long story.) There are 30 surface acres—about 80 million gallons—of freshwater in seven ponds. They have a hatchery, are building a processing center to fillet all their fish on-site, there’s also an acre-plus organic garden for boutique produce, and the ranch has ducks, chickens, goats and a donkey named Dave. Dave likes to hang with the goats.

The fish, of course, are the centerpiece.

Passmore Ranch has black and striped bass, trout, silver carp, catfish and sturgeon, which, really, is the fish that launched Passmore into rarefied air. He also just started selling fresh and aged caviar.

So, what is this son of Texas and a former Marine doing selling fish and caviar in Northern California? It gets back to the point: What plan?

Passmore, 41, is a sturdy guy with a slightly round, babyish face. It’s the kind of face that looks good in a cowboy hat. Even when he’s serious, Passmore has a perpetual look of amusement.

Passmore grew up in North Texas and joined the Marines out of high school. He got out in 1990. That’s when, he said, he got his business training from the University of Never Do This Again. More specifically, he started a car- and boat-repair business.

“Actually, I screwed it up really good.”

Passmore got a job in Dallas doing corporate background checks, but as a North Texas boy, Dallas was too “all that” for him. So he looked for another background-check job and found one

in Elk Grove in 1999. The area was less showy than Dallas and seemed a better fit for him. Here, he met Vandy, and they married in 2001.

But Passmore is an outdoors guy. He bought his first 40 acres of grasslands and gentle hills near Sloughhouse in 2005, having no clue what he would do with them.

The land there is wide open and rolling, with lines of trees on low ridges and a sense the grass, sky and calm stretch on to infinity. It reminded Passmore of the Texas he loved.

Still, he was back at: What plan? They moved into a large trailer while he built a house.

Vandy, who had taught in Elk Grove, landed the fourth-grade gig at Cosumnes River Elementary School about a mile away. Michael prepared to enroll in Lincoln Law School of Sacramento.

Then, he met his neighbor, Ken Beer, who owns The Fishery in Galt, one of the bestregarded freshwater-fish farms in California.

Beer became Passmore’s friend and mentor.

“My grandfather always said, ‘Do what the successful guy near you is doing,’ so I thought,

‘Let’s try fish farming,’” Passmore said. “Ken was so generous with help. He taught me everything.”

That included how to get fish to eat the feed on the water’s surface, not the bottom, to keep them cleaner tasting, which sets Passmore Ranch and a few others apart from some larger farms.

The original concept was one pond. Fish would be a side business for Michael Passmore, attorney at law.

“I figured I’d drive the tractor around in the evenings,” he said. “The next five ponds were because the earthmovers were here, and Vandy was out of town. I thought, ‘We have room, why not six?’”

“I should know better than to leave him alone,” Vandy said.

By 2006, Passmore was selling fish to Asian markets. In 2009, he was in San Francisco on a Saturday morning and found the farmers market at the Ferry Building. He loved the energy, the scene, the relationships among farmers and buyers.

“Everyone knew everyone’s name and story,” he said. “I wanted to be part of that. I thought, ‘I’m a farmer. Why can’t I go to farmers markets?’”

He began loading his fish truck with live bass, carp, catfish and sturgeon and showing up at major Northern California farmers markets, including the big Sunday-morning market under the Capitol City Freeway in Sacramento.

He was a hit, maybe just for the curiosity of this cheerful guy selling live fish. One hitch: State law said the fish couldn’t leave alive. He had to dispatch them.

“I was allowed to electrocute them,” Passmore said, “but I was pretty sure we didn’t want mess with electricity. We just conked them on the head.”

Passmore Ranch was surviving, but busing fish to farmers markets isn’t a get-rich scheme.

Pajo Bruich executive chef, Enotria Restaurant Wine Bar It’s a barely-pay-the-bills scheme. Passmore put law school on hold after one year and worked on the business. Things changed in June 2010. Randall Selland wandered over to Passmore’s booth.

“Randall found us,” Passmore said. “I knew no one. I never thought of selling directly to chefs. He opened so many doors for us.”

“Michael likes to say that,” said Selland, owner of The Kitchen, Ella Dining Room & Bar, and patriarch of the Selland Family Restaurants.

“He tries to give us credit for his success, but it was all him.”

“We thought it was the coolest thing when we found him at the farmers market. We started telling everyone about him, because he had such a passion, but he’s a success because he’s a good guy, and he works hard to help the chefs.”

“No, it was Randall,” Passmore said.

That’s how it goes with Passmore. He takes little credit for anything. He squirms when people compliment him publicly. The nicest thing he’ll say about himself is that his Marine training helps him take advantage of opportunities.

Selland was certainly an opportunity. He asked Passmore if he could deliver sturgeon to The Kitchen.

“I said, very nicely, ‘You do realize I’m going to bring this rather large fish,’” Passmore said.

Yup, Selland said.

On July 2, 2010, Passmore made his first restaurant delivery.

“He’d pull up in back and have a 4-foot sturgeon flopping around,” Selland said. “Then he’d bang it on the head and haul it in.”

Passmore hit it off with Selland and Kelly McCown, then the executive chef at Ella (now at Goose & Gander in St. Helena). Selland and McCown introduced Passmore to chefs around the region. In late summer 2010, McCown hosted a chefs’ dinner at Ella. He invited Passmore, so he could introduce him to some of the best chefs in the region.

“I was nervous,” Passmore said. “I figured the least I could do was bring some beer.”

And so he brought a case of beer to Ella. And he made friends and took orders.

But over the next months, some chefs weren’t entirely thrilled with Passmore’s sturgeon. Passmore asked Selland, who loved the fish, what was wrong.

“I told him it’s not your fish,” Selland said.

“They don’t know how to deal with your fish.”

Sturgeon skeleton is mostly cartilage, not bone. Chefs used to following the bones to fillet a fish were making a mess of it. Plus, it’s a huge fish with a lot of muscle. Unlike, say, trout, sturgeon needs to rest a week or more to go through rigor mortis.

“If you don’t age it,” said Moonen, the national authority on seafood, “it curls up and turns into a rubber ball when you cook it. It seems weird, but with sturgeon, fresh is inedible.”

Selland helped Passmore figure that out.

Passmore Ranch started aging the sturgeon on ice, changing the ice regularly so the fish wouldn’t sit in its own juices. And instead of live sturgeon, he delivered fillets, cut specifically for each restaurant. All his fish can come live, filleted or freshly conked, as needed.

“So much of sushi can be endangered,” Ngo said. “Michael’s given me a sustainable option.

And his fish are really good.”

Bruich wants his sturgeon aged seven to 10 days, Passmore learned.

“He asks questions, he listens, he adapts what he’s doing to what we need,” Bruich said. “He’s super humble. He has no problem saying, ‘If you don’t like my product, tell me why and I’ll fix it,’ or, ‘Come out and see what I’m doing.’ And he’ll tell me if he thinks we’ve done something wrong, too. Who does that?

“He’s redefining the relationship between purveyors and restaurants. Michael and I talk about his products, our businesses, the Sacramento scene, everything that matters to us.

We look at what he and I have and say we need to demand this from all our purveyors.”

Aimal Formoli, another top Sacramento chef, said the same thing.

“He completely understands my business,” Formoli said. “He makes everything personal, but is still completely professional. He’s changing it for everyone else providing services. If Michael’s doing it, they should, too.”

‘We Were a novelty’ Passmore’s business has grown on the strength of relationships. McCown moved back to Napa for Goose & Gander and introduced Passmore around the Valley. Bruich connected him to Kostow and Meadowood. Now, Passmore and

loyalty for a man they respect. There will be more, he says.

Back at Passmore Ranch, as Passmore drives the Kubota, the air smells fresh and clean, almost like he’s near the ocean. He gets a little uncomfortable hearing the compliments from Moonen and others.

“I like chefs,” he said. “They don’t have a lot of pretensions, and there’s a blunt edge I’m comfortable with. They’re not unkind, just straight-up and practical. I’m not a very extroverted person, and I think most chefs would prefer to be in the back of the house, too.”

Introvert though he may be, Passmore constantly goes out into Sacramento’s food scene, trying new restaurants, contributing to charity events, showing up for friends who are cooking, and generally staying in touch.

“He’s out more than any other purveyor,” Bruich said. “And when he comes in to Enotria, it’s a special night for us. Not because he’s some big VIP, but because we have a family member in the house.”

That sentiment is part of something new in Sacramento. Passmore is helping create an evolved sense of what “farm to fork” means in a region that’s claimed the notion as its DNA. “Farm to fork” is not just growing and eating fresh food, it’s also working together, farmers learning what chefs need, chefs learning what farmers do, both making food sustainable and approachable and part of a communal experience. No one would claim the region is there yet, but it’s hard to find a chef who doesn’t give some credit to the man who got noticed selling fish out of his truck.

Kostow are friends. Kostow even brought his crew to Passmore Ranch during Farm-to-Fork week to cook a meal benefiting Pleasant Grove High School’s Future Farmers of America.

“How cool is that?” Passmore said. “[Kostow] did that because he believes in what we’re doing in this region.”

Kostow also believes in what Passmore is doing. So does the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program. Sheila Bowman, a top manager there, is one of the nation’s most respected voices on sustainability. In 2011, she connected Passmore to Palo Alto-based Bon Appétit Management Company, which runs more than 500 restaurants at corporate buildings, colleges and more, all focused on sustainability and food that is, essentially, farm to fork.

Bon Appétit manages the cafeteria at VSP in Sacramento, among others, and brought Passmore fish in there. It also helped Passmore make more Bay Area connections. By 2011, he happily stopped doing the farmers markets.

“They were fun,” he said. “We were a novelty, but people really wanted fillets.”

Passmore connected to Cindy Pawlcyn—the Napa Valley star who owns Mustards Grill, Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen and others—through the Aquarium, and Bowman recommended Passmore to Moonen when sea bass was moved onto a watch list, and he wanted an alternative.

“She told me, ‘Here’s a guy running a great business, with real integrity about his fish, the land and the people he works with,’” Moonen said. “She was right.”

Moonen called Passmore. They chatted. “ He’s a pioneer. He’s expanding Moonen asked if Passmore could ship a sample.

he idea seems simple enough, but when I tell the barista at my favorite cafe that I’m writing a piece on why Roseville doesn’t suck, he swivels away from the espresso machine and casts his gaze upward toward the ceiling, confused.

“How ... do you plan to do that?” he finally asks me, nervously.

I just shrug.

“It’s all relative,” I admit. “I’m just here to say it doesn’t suck as much as you think.”

I won’t lie. When we moved to Roseville from Texas in March 2009, it was in part a type of giving up. Our expectations were low.

We had suffered major income loss due to the recession, and we had a support network here ready to help us get back on our feet. I anticipated a sad and sterile suburban existence, but what I got instead were creeks banked with wildflowers, ladies in babushkas, tree-shrouded streets lined with early 20th-century bungalows, and just enough fellow oddballs to keep me entertained. But even with all that, why would people who identify as “cultural creatives” move to what many consider a cliché of a soulless suburb in the first place?

Indeed, there is a Roseville that is separate, distinct and altogether better than the stereotyped version that’s limited to the Westfield Galleria at Roseville mall, big-box stores and shoppers in SUVs. Here, for example, we’re allowed to have backyard chickens, there are bike lanes and trails galore, and the town even boasts some great used bookstores. We have parties on patios with twinkling lanterns, with background noise provided by the gentle, monotonous rumble of the passing trains.

And more and more, we’re meeting the type of people we thought of as the “exception to the rule,” but their increasing visibility makes it seem less exceptional and more the “way things are going.”

A recession, then depression, then a reckoning One such canary in a coal mine is a celebrated corset-maker, Sue Nice. For her, moving to Roseville represented the caving in to the conundrum of the “offer she couldn’t refuse” after personal and financial crisis.

Nice, owner of Sue Nice Corsets, is the kind of woman who bonded with her husband over intense political discussions and the onstage antics of the late punk singer GG Allin. Prior to relocating to Roseville in 2012, Nice lived in Echo Park, a suburb of Los Angeles, where she was a major figure in the punk, burlesque and fetish communities. Over the years, she’s corseted all sorts of notables, including Stevie Nicks and porn star Ron Jeremy, and has also worked with renowned photographers, bands and burlesque troops.

Then, the recession happened. That, combined with an unexpected pregnancy in her late 30s, resulted in an economic and personal place of reckoning.

“I felt like I had a brick on my tail. And all around me in that rarefied L.A. climate, fellow BEFORE

parents were talking about Montessori schools, French-language immersion ... and here we were, in debt up to our eyeballs and going downhill fast,” Nice says.

So, last fall, Nice and her husband ended up moving in with her mother into an 800-squarefoot bungalow, across the street from a playground and a stone’s-throw away from the train tracks that snake through old Roseville.

Nice’s depression and feelings of isolation were at an all-time high for a while after she arrived. She was back in Roseville, the town where, in the ’70s and ’80s, she had lived a stifling suburban childhood.

This was the kind of place a girl like her escaped from as a way to find herself. It in no way seemed to be a welcoming haven for a tired punk mama who needed to come home again.

Her attitude, however, did a gentle 180 that started one night when her husband Ted encouraged her to take a walk with him.

“Doesn’t it feel good not to have to worry about anything?” he asked her, as they walked hand in hand on the quiet streets.

It dawned on Nice then just how tired she had gotten of her Southern California neighborhood’s domestic-violence disputes, loud cars and the occasional gunshot.

Over the next few weeks, as she rode around Roseville on her orange vintage Schwinn cruiser, she says she came to respect and appreciate the beauty of her quirky old neighborhood, and discovered like-minded

artists and writers who had made a similar choice and were forging ahead in suburbia.

“I knew there were some Midtown expatriates here. And more are coming,” she says, as she sips coffee from her Black Flag mug and raises her pinup-girl eyebrows hopefully.

Nice isn’t the only creative exile, of course.

Emily Elders Balestrini is a working artist and active member of the arts community both in Roseville (such as it is) and in Sacramento. We met after I watched her walk her kids to the elementary school dressed, day after day, in a ’50s prom dress and kitten-heel pumps with bobby socks, and carrying a teacup filled with coffee. Balestrini moved here a decade ago when she was newly married and starting her family, in spite of the fact that it was an inherently oddball choice for her.

“It’s the feeling of acceptance I get for my quirks,” she says. “You know: ‘You may be a weirdo, but you’re our weirdo.’”

Balestrini maintains an art studio on her family’s home property, where she sometimes has soirees that include gatherings for her Midtown cadre from years past. Here, she has had one-woman shows for her printmaking and other art forms, and blogs about her work at www.aerogirl.com.

“Maybe because most people who live out here have a specific and standardized set of expectations, it’s a happy accident to find a maker in their midst,” Balestrini says. “The burbs have been good to me, because what I do adds to the daily sum of pleasure.”

Cheap rent and artistic freedom There’s a lot of aesthetic and historical variety in a neighborhood that’s had some time to develop.

There are families with young kids as well as retirees, and the homes bear the stamps of that variety, much of it artfully expressed.

Nice points out that nearby, “You might come across a turquoise house, faded from years, and [the homeowners are] using a rusted old bicycle as a flower trellis. This isn’t a sterile environment.”

And in one of those oddball, charming houses lives the family of Stephanie Longoria, a supervisor at the Crocker Art Museum. Longoria used to manage the Sacramento Dimple Records location, and was, as she shyly put it, “kind of Midtown royalty,” inasmuch as she and her husband were out socializing, at clubs and attending shows most nights of the week. She was there in Sacramento to watch the housing boom that brought in the Bay Area investors who, in turn, helped to drive prices skyward.

In time, she and her family relocated to Roseville for reasons that mirror Balestrini’s.

“There’s all kinds of room to be a child, here,” Longoria says. “And the density of downtown makes it feel safe and adventurous at the same time.”

Longoria believes Roseville’s old downtown and its commensurate cheap rent fosters artistic freedom. Furthermore, there’s inspiration that comes from the kind of decaying beauty that’s baked into this environment.

“There’s no hipster-driven effort [in Roseville]. Thrift-store shopping is done unironically,” she says. “And there are quirkier parents here, too, connected to the charter school my kids attend.”

In other words, we cling to each other like ants on a raft, we freaks in the suburbs. And though it’s great to find like-minded folks where you least expect it, Nice points out that maybe growing older gives you a certain freedom from needing to be surrounded by your fellows.

When we were in early adulthood, the impulse was to leave what was grimly familiar and dull and strike out for urban centers. We gathered in big cities and liberal colleges, and for a long time, we all held onto that for the social shorthand it served and for the easy exposure to arts and culture. Now, some of us have either willingly left or were forced out.

Regardless, we carried with us the connections and friendships forged there. Social media helps enormously.

“I know where my people are,” Nice says, pointing at imaginary locations. “They’re here.

And here. And over here. … And, of course, my community is a virtual one, now, too.”

acramento’s love of Halloween extends beyond dressing up in costumes. Its denizens love decorating their homes, too. And now there’s a local film about eight Sacramentans who go all out with adornments, turning suburban abodes into mansions of the macabre. Halloween Home Haunts, produced by local film company Apprehensive Films, follows people obsessed with the ghoulish holiday who spend thousands of dollars to decorate. It will premier

at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, at the Heartstoppers Haunted House in the Downtown Plaza (on the second floor near the play area, at 515 L Street). It’ll also be released this Halloween season on DVD, Blu-ray Disc and on video on demand for people with cable providers such as AT&T, Verizon and SureWest.

Heartstoppers itself will attempt to scare visitors with such haunted areas as The Deadlands, Dr. Lash’s Sideshow and Steamghást Asylum. But that’s assuming you

don’t already squirm in horror just being in the Downtown Plaza in the first place. Seeing the film is free with paid admission to the haunted house ($15-$30). Or, for $50, you can be strapped into a wicker wheelchair and pushed into the haunted house by one of the estate’s characters, alone. My dad’s side of the family has deep by roots in Kansas City, Mo., where relations Garrett McCord barbequed briskets low and slow. My husband is the son of a grill- and chili-competition champ and has inherited the skills passed down to him. Suffice it to say, I hold high standards.

For husband-and-wife team Tyler and Melissa Williams, the move to launch a barbeque joint rating: that was open late and stocked with a fine selecHHH tion of beer and whiskey was a clever one. dinner for one: Along with talented chef and pit master $10 - $20 Brian “Chachi” Maydahl (a stalwart chef with stripes earned via The Kitchen, Tuli Bistro and Shady Lady Saloon), they’re aiming to fill a void that so far only Sandra Dee’s BBQ & Seafood and Texas West BBQ have dared step into.

The décor here is “suspenders and suede oxfords”—both homey and eclectic with old wood, new wood and wallpaper that is to die for. A large patio is welcoming and allows diners to bathe in the haze from the drum H smoker. You’ll leave perfumed in white oak flawed and almond-wood smoke; a good thing if your HH date digs the smell of meat and wood, bad if haS momentS you have a meeting after lunch.

HHH The coleslaw here is served as a mix of appealing finely shredded cabbage and carrots that still HHHH have plenty of crunch, but while the body is authoritative strong, the soul is absent. A simple addition of HHHHH celery seed, caraway, cider vinegar or lemon epic would enliven it. Greens are packed with vinegar, bacon and yesiwantsecondsplease.

The hot links are from Silva Sausage Company in the Bay Area and are the only item not made in-house. If you haven’t had this brand of hot link before, well, it’s hot as sex in July on a tin roof. They’re cut in half lengthwise before cooking and charred quickly, which tends to dry them out, but a slathering of the sauces fixes that fine enough.

tomato-based. It’s also a bit polarizing: Some of my dining companions thought it was delightful, others thought it tasted like ketchup and sugar.

However, we all agreed that some layering of spice—garlic, onion, Worcestershire sauce, something—was needed.

The vinegar-based sauce (think a less sour Carolinian-style sauce) is tangy, as it’s billed to be. I prefer tangy barbecue sauces to be sour enough to slap you in the mouth, and spicy enough to make you gasp for air.

Then again, as a chef I worked for once told me, “Sauce is subjective.”

The mac and cheese also needs improvement.

The Mornay sauce is expertly made, both soft and smooth. Unfortunately, Tank House once again underseasons—the mac lacks an intrigue that a pinch of salt or mustard could muster. As it stands, it’s very bland.

Tank House is still young, but the passion and potential are there. In addition, finely cooked brisket and ribs, a stocked bar, swank interior, and late hours will ensure its endearment with the Midtown crowd (and this eater, as well).

Wine is meant to be enjoyed with food, of course: The menu offers a wide selection of tidbits and hearty dishes. Worth sampling: the goat-cheese stuffed peppers, chilled Spanish-spiced shrimp, and a cheddar-andapple melt. Or try the ambrosial Wine Country sandwich, with salty prosciutto, sweet fig jam, oozy mozzarella and peppery arugula on grilled bread. There are also a variety of flatbreads loaded with topping combos like capicola, three cheeses, piquillo peppers and green onions. Estelle’s Patisserie With its marble tables and light wooden chairs, there’s an airy atmosphere, casual and cozy. Estelle’s offers an espresso bar and a wide assortment of teas and muffins and rolls for the breakfast crowd as well as sweets, including DayGlo macarons. For

the lunch-inclined, there are soups, salads, sandwiches and meat or meatless quiche. One of the authentic touches is the spare use of condiments. The smoked salmon is enlivened by dill and the flavor of its croissant. Its tomato bisque is thick and richly flavored, and, in a nice touch, a puff pastry floats in the tureen as accompaniment. Grange Restaurant & Bar You won’t find any “challenging” dishes on this menu—just delicious local and seasonal food such as the Green Curry & Pumpkin Soup, which has a Southeast Asian flair. A spinach salad features ingredients that could be considered boring elsewhere: blue-cheese dressing, bacon, onion. But here, the sharply cheesy buttermilk dressing and the woodsy pine nuts make it a salad to remember. Grange’s brunch puts other local offerings to shame. The home fries are like marvelously crispy Spanish patatas bravas. A grilled-hamand-Gruyere sandwich is just buttery enough, and an eggwhite frittata is more than a bone thrown to the cholesterolchallenged; it’s a worthy dish in its own right. American.

Zia’s Delicatessen Zia’s Delicatessen isn’t really about trying every sandwich: It’s about finding your sandwich. In

addition to a large selection of salumi, there’s the worthy eponymous offering, served with a wedge of zucchini frittata, a slice of provolone, romaine lettuce, grainy tomato, and a simple dash of vinegar and oil that adds tang.

Order it hot, so that the provolone melts into the bread.

Also tasty: the hot meatball sub with small-grained, tender meatballs bathed in a thin, oregano-flecked tomato sauce that soaks into the bread. A tuna sandwich is sturdy, if not exciting. It is just mayonnaisey enough, with tiny, diced bits of celery.

A rosemary panino cotto with mozzarella could benefit from a more flavorful cheese. For a meatier option, try the Milano: mortadella, salami, Muenster; all three flavors in balance.

Midtown 24K Chocolat Cafe This cafe serves a solid, if very limited, brunch and lunch menu. One offering is a firm wedge of frittata with a strong tang of sharp cheddar that almost but doesn’t quite jibe with the slightly spicy mole sauce on the plate.The spinach curry, made creamy by coconut milk rather than dairy, comes topped with cubes of tofu and tiny diced scallion and red bell pepper and rests atop a smooth

potato cake. A side of garbanzobean salad is well-flavored with the surprising combination of mint and apricot. The place, located inside Ancient Future, has “chocolat” in the name, and chocolate is in many of the menu offerings, including a tiny cup of hot Mexican drinking chocolate, and chocolatecherry scones served crisp and hot, studded with big chunks of bittersweet chocolate and tart dried cherries. Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co. The restaurant, by the same owners as Midtown’s The Golden Bear, sports a firefighting theme (a ladder on the ceiling duct work, shiny silver wallpaper with a rat-and-hydrant motif, et al) and a bar setup that encourages patrons to talk to each other. An interesting wine list includes entries from Spain and Israel; there are also draft cocktails and numerous beers on tap. The brunch menu is heavy on the eggs, prepared in lots of ways. One option is the Croque Madame, a hamand-Gruyere sandwich usually battered with egg. This one had a fried egg and béchamel, with a generous smear of mustard inside. The mountain of potato hash alongside tasted flavorful and not too greasy.

The menu also features pizzas and house-made pastas, but one of its highlights includes an excellent smoked-eggplant baba ganoush, which is smoky and garlicky and served with warm flatbread wedges and oil-cured olives. The bananas

Thai and Lao food, but go for the Lao specialties, which rely on flavoring staples such as fish sauce, lime juice, galangal and lemongrass, lots of herbs, and chilies. One of the most common dishes in Lao cuisine is larb, a dish of chopped meat laced with herbs, chilies and lime. At Asian Café, it adds optional offal add-ons—various organ meats, entrails, et al—to three versions of the dish: beef with tripe, chicken with gizzards, or pork with pork skin. There are vegan options, too: The Italian, an eggplant-based brat, has a surprisingly sausagelike texture that no self-respecting carnivore will turn down for lack of flavor. The idea behind Duck Fat Fries is a glorious one, yet somehow still falls short. You just expect something more when you see the words “duck fat.” The beer selection is epic. Acili ezme is a chopped, slightly spicy mixture of tomatoes, cucumber and walnuts that’s delicious paired with accompanying flatbread wedges. For entrees, try the borani, a lamb stew with garbanzos, carrots, potatoes and currants. The meat is very tender, while the veggies arrived nicely al dente. Also good is the chicken shish plate (souvlaki), which features two skewers of marinated grilled chicken that’s moist and succulent. South Sac A&A Tasty Restaurant and Bar This Little Saigon eatery boasts such an extensive menu of Chinese and Vietnamese dishes that it’s hard to pinpoint its crown jewel. Notable options include a salty fish and chicken-fried rice entree with stirfried vegetables. The fried rice offers copious pieces of the diced salty fish. This may seem a bit weird to the uninitiated, but the reward is a unique, jolting pungent flavor that spruces up an otherwise boring chicken-fried rice. Elsewhere on the menu, the Vietnamese pork-chop rice plate, served with a small bowl of fish sauce, surprisingly stacks up to similar dishes from other strictly Vietnamese restaurants in the area. The pork is thinly sliced and tender, easily cut with a simple butter knife. A&A’s mash-up of hu tieu and huáng máo ji is unusual: The dish is commonplace, yet here it shines when set atop a steaming bowl of noodle soup. Blue Moon Cafe and Karaoke In Sac, most people equate Hong Kong-style cuisine with dim sum, but this restaurant, which also features private karaoke rooms, serves up tasty, familiar food by way of rice plates, sandwiches, noodle bowls, soups and stir-fries. A few random Japanese (ramen, fried udon), French (sweet or savory crepes), Russian (borscht), Korean (beef and kimchi hot pot) and Italian (various pastas) foods add to the feeling that whatever your cultural background, you’ll find a comfort dish from your childhood to wrap its arms around you and give you a hug. Cultural diversity aside, one of Blue Moon’s best dishes is the braised pig ear with soy sauce and peanuts. Asian.

There are salads, too, but the best dish on the menu is the burger. Arden/ Carmichael El Pollo Feliz For a restaurant dubbed “the happy chicken,” El Pollo Feliz sure smokes a lot of birds. These chickens get one heck of an afterlife: Their parts are rubbed with earthy Mexican spices and then slow-cooked in a smoker for hours. The restaurant’s signature dish is barbecue chicken, and customers can purchase wings, breasts, drumsticks and thighs in a variety of amounts. You can also order it covered in a chocolatey and peppery mole-poblano sauce; shredded and scattered atop a plate of nachos; on top

all the kick of a pissed off Girl Scout who’s just tall enough to nail you right under the kneecap.

Tacos are small and served on two tiny tortillas (flour or corn, your call) with a bit of house salsa that has

The single best dish here is the nam kao tod, a crispy entree with ground pork that’s baked on the bottom of the pan with rice, then stirred and fried up fresh the next day with dried Thai chilies and scallions. Customers can choose from two types of pies: breakfast or lunch. Breakfast pizzas consist of standard pizza dough, on top of which rests a thin layer of egg, cheese and toppings (read: no sauce). One pepperoni-andjalapeños morning pie starts off well, but then the dough disappoints. It doesn’t quite fit in either the “thick” or “thin” category; it’s not yeasty enough and too chewy and firm. A mushroom-and-spinach pie offers better texture. Lunch pizzas here are less unique, but still hit a nice mark via a few standout ingredients. The garlic pizza reaches a nice balance of sweet and salty with a creamy white sauce, mushrooms, onions, pepperoni and sausage. Buffalo also offers Gunther’s Ice Cream, side salads, fried chicken and canned sodas, but here, it’s breakfast pizza for the win. American.

Melt with you Macaroni and cheese is more than just a box of noodles with cheese-flavored powder. At various eateries in town, one can order different takes on the classic, like bacon mac-and-cheese plates and fried mac-and-cheese balls. Now, thanks in part to local cookbook author (and, full disclosure, current SN&R food critic) Garrett McCord, comfort-food aficionados can create outside-the-box mac ’n’ cheese. McCord’s new book, Melt: The Art of Macaroni and Cheese, is co-authored by Stephanie Stiavetti and features imaginative recipes based on the gooey noodle dish. It starts off with a primer on choosing (and making) cheese and preparing pasta. Recipes include squid-ink pasta with marinated perlini mozzarella, and chocolate pasta with bucherondin, hazelnuts and cherries. Published by Little, Brown and Company, it’ll be available in bookstores for $30 on Tuesday, October 22. Now, Manhattanites still wait in line for hours for a taste of this specialty pastry, and it has spawned a bevy of imitators around the world (all of which are required to go by different names, because the term “Cronut” is trademarked). It’s time to squeeze into a formfitting dirndl or say yes to some traditional lederhosen for a hometown spin on one of Germany’s largest outdoor celebrations, Oktoberfest.

This Saturday, October 19, steins brimming with craft beers will clink in merriment during FESTIVAL the inaugural Sactoberfest, which will be held along The Bridge District on the riverfront in West Sacramento.

Event organizers expect a crowd of more than 3,000 revelers to partake in all things German inspired, including contests for best dressed, and competitions for those skilled in beer pong, stein holding, yodeling and trivia. There’ll even be a keg-rolling contest.

Don’t want to put your game face on? Chill under a bier-hall tent where maidens will serve up German craft brews, as well as a selection of traditional foods, such as bratwurst, schnitzel, pretzels and strudel from the likes of LowBrau, Sienna Restaurant and German Deli.

The festivities begin at noon, and the first 1,000 entrants to this 21-and-over event will receive a collectible stein. There will also be live music by the Flying Dutchman, the Alpine Horns and the Chico Bavarian Band.

And if you want to polka or waltz all that beer off, kick up your heels and check out the traditionaldance demonstrations.

Six months ago, I met a man online.

After a few online conversations, we communicated through our private email accounts, and then began talking through Skype. We spoke every night. He said he loved me and talked about me moving to Houston, where he lives. Everything between us worked. Last month, I flew to Houston. The man I met was different than the man I had been speaking with. He was shy! But he began to relax and made me comfortable in his home. My visit was great. But now, he has cut all contact. The fantasy of a relationship crashed into the reality of a relationship. Technology aided and abetted the deception. It was probably exhausting. When he realized how much his life would have to change if he added you into it, well, he admitted to himself that he was not willing to open that space. Yes, he loves you. And, yes, he loves himself enough to accept his limitations. If you love yourself, you will reboot your heart and retrain your mind. If your thoughts flit to him, yank your mind back to something important. Focus on enjoying your life and improving yourself without adding him into the equation. Ω

Small and sharp Tell Me on a Sunday We’ve seen many musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber in Sacramento, and they’ve all been huge: The Phantom of the Opera (with its famous fallby Jeff Hudson ing chandelier) being exhibit A. And I’ll be blunt: ALW’s stage spectaculars often falter after intermission, overwhelmed by their own grandiosity and often-padded length.

Now, New Helvetia Theatre is presenting the composer’s smallest piece, Tell Me on a Sunday, a one-act song cycle—in this case, featuring actress Nanci Zoppi, backed by pianist Graham Sobelman and cellist Timothy Stanley.

The human-scale story is related by a character called Emma, a young Brit who comes to America seeking fame and success.

Through the songs, Emma describes several all-too-brief romances with less-thanhonorable men as she flits between New York and Los Angeles. (The rest of America is a flyover zone, but we’ll let that go.)

Tell Me on a Sunday dates from 1979 (between Evita and Cats), and it’s predigital: Emma keeps posting handwritten letters to Mum. Be advised that this show exists in varying versions, British and American, so it may not synch entirely with other versions you’ve encountered. Ω

4Down the Road

The abyss is staring back—and smiling.

That’s the message in Lee Blessing’s Down the Road, now being staged by EMH Productions at the Geery Theatre, which asks a lot of uncomfortable questions about the nature of violence, the rise of serial killers and America’s fascination with their stories—and with the unspeakable acts of others in general.

Iris (Elise Hodge) makes her living writing “true crime” stories, though she’s never taken on a serial killer before; she’s being joined for the first time by her husband, Dan (Jake Lyall) for a book that will tell the story of the snakelike William Reach (Dustin Miller, in a role loosely based on the crimes of Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgway, the “Green River Killer”). As the two writers delve deeper into the mind of the killer, their relationship and attitudes are affected—how could they not be?

Hodge and Lyall are well matched, but the heavy lifting in this show is done by Miller, whose serial killer is the guy who inhabits nightmares—and, yes, he quickly grabs the heart of the play and squeezes the hope out of it.

Down the Road, directed by Kara Ow, is a dark, dark ride. But it’s not a pointless trip. We are left to wonder if our fascination with monsters isn’t in fact the very thing that creates them in the first place.

And you know what? ALW’s melodic approach is well-served by the show’s comparative brevity and clean, spare arrangements (also Don Black’s lyrics), with fewer pastiches in borrowed musical styles. I wasn’t entirely sold on Zoppi’s “Britishness,” but her portrayal of a woman-on-the-make—grasping at romantic opportunities and then moving on quickly when things don’t work out—is appropriately bittersweet. Gradually, Emma realizes that she’s using her men, too. Sobelman handles the keyboard part skillfully, but he’s playing an aging piano that should probably be put out to pasture. Stanley’s cello adds class. The set consists of steamer trunks, suitcases, plus hats and clothes (as Zoppi changes outfits between songs); the lighting gets goofy in one number (too many color changes).

“Wherefore art we in this mess of a film, Romeo?”

There’s blame to go around in this mockery of the Bard of Avon, but the chief culprit is writer Julian Fellowes, who is on record as saying that Shakespeare’s “language choices” are beyond the reach of today’s audiences. Fellowes’ own language choices are simple to the point of simplemindedness. Where Shakespeare wrote poetry, Fellowes writes doggerel, often resorting to cliché. One character even says (in iambic pentameter, yet), “Good intentions pave the road to hell.” Actually, that’s one famous line Shakespeare didn’t write: It goes back centuries before him. In catering to his unlettered audience, Fellowes trots out a line that was a cliché even in Shakespeare’s day.

In another scene, Romeo, after staying out all night mooning over Juliet, tells Mercutio and Benvolio, “Thanks for covering my tracks.” If only somebody had covered Fellowes’.

Maybe Fellowes was less concerned with the comprehension of his audience than the limitations of his leads: The “star-crossed lovers” here are, alas, played by two black holes. As Juliet, Hailee Steinfeld—so lively and spirited in the Coens’ True Grit—flounders, mumbling her lines and shifting her eyes in confusion, as if wondering how anybody could ever have talked

like this (we can only wonder what she’d do if Fellowes had given her more of Shakespeare to chew on). Like an amateur, she even bobbles Juliet’s second-most-famous line (after “parting is such sweet sorrow”), making “Wherefore art thou Romeo?” sound like she’s asking where he is.

(Note to Steinfeld: “wherefore” means “why.”)

Worse, she has little chemistry with the Romeo of Douglas Booth, who was unfamiliar to me until I remembered him from last year’s LOL. Back then, I called him “as bland and faceless as” a Calvin Klein underwear model, and that still holds. Booth is gorgeous—if truth be told, he’s prettier than Hailee Steinfeld—but it’s skin-deep. Did the producers hope to snag the Twilight saga’s teenage audience? If so, Booth is their man/boy: He’s almost as dull as Robert Pattinson.

Booth and Steinfeld (and Fellowes, for that matter) might have profited from Franco Zeffirelli’s classic 1968 take on the story, where Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey (at about the same ages Booth and Steinfeld are now) burned with the white-hot fires of youth and had no trouble channeling them through Shakespeare.

On the other hand, these young players might have preferred not to be influenced by others. On the third hand, they may not have thought about it one way or another. Their lackluster, halting work here could support either conclusion.

Director Carlo Carlei is just as out of his depth as Steinfeld and Booth. The movie was filmed in Verona and Mantua in Italy, where the play was set, but the authenticity backfires—the buildings are picturesque, but they look 500 years old.

As Juliet, Hailee Steinfeld flounders, mumbling her lines and shifting her eyes in confusion, as if wondering how anybody could ever have talked like this.

Carlei’s most ill-considered touch, however, is his staging of the duel between Romeo and Tybalt (a snarling Ed Westwick), which he climaxes by having Romeo stab Tybalt in the back. Some hero.

The supporting cast adds a little class: Paul Giamatti’s conniving Friar Laurence, Lesley Manville’s featherheaded Nurse, Stellan Skarsgård’s stately Prince of Verona.

In 1996, I was a little hard on Baz Luhrmann’s jagged, hopped-up version of the story, and on Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the title roles. I take it all back now.

Carlei, Fellowes and company have done the seemingly impossible: They’ve made a Baz Luhrmann movie look like the National Theatre of Great Britain. Ω

Captain Phillips

Every word that accurately describes the experience of Captain Phillips makes it sound like the movie beats the hell out of its viewers. It’s an exhausting film, but in a good way. Much as he did in United 93, director Paul Greengrass employs his punishing brand of verisimilitude to immerse the audience in real-life horrors. This time, Greengrass locates his handheld camera 150 miles off of the east African coast, where in April 2009, Somali pirates brazenly commandeered a container ship and took captain Richard Phillips hostage.

Tom Hanks plays Phillips, and while his casting may be character shorthand for “decent and dutiful,” Greengrass and screenwriter Billy Ray are after larger spoils. Captain Phillips splits its time between Phillips and his malnourished Somali captor, a violently ambitious pirate played by Barkhad Abdi, who gives one of the most compelling performances of the year. Machete Kills

Inequality for All

Jacob Kornbluth’s documentary Inequality for All explores the increasing income disparity in America, taking a cheeky tone and glorified PowerPoint approach that is colorful but tired. Fortunately, Kornbluth has an energetic and likable central figure in Robert Reich, the diminutive, longtime friend of former President Bill Clinton and the former labor secretary in his cabinet. Reich is predominantly an author and lecturer now, and the film is structured around his UC Berkeley class on wealth and poverty (cut to students nodding serenely at Reich’s every word), while also wading delicately into his personal life. The film is not immune to the straw-man arguments endemic to advocacy documentaries, and occasionally employs clips from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart in place of salient points. Despite the blatant advocacy and hackneyed approach, though, Inequality for All pulls up the roots of an issue that should transcend political ideology. D.B.

Enough Said

It has become second nature for a struggling film actor to reinvigorate his or her career on television, but it is much less rare for the star of a long-running TV show to find new life on the big screen. Against all odds, Nicole Holofcener’s witty and observant Enough Said successfully reinvents a couple of TV stars who never quite connected as film actors. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini play Eva and Albert, divorced empty nesters who begin a tentative courtship. Of course, it is bittersweet watching Gandolfini on screen again, especially when he’s so good in a role that is the polar opposite of Tony Soprano. Louis-Dreyfus and Gandolfini have genuine chemistry, and their self-effacing flirtation grounds the film. D.B.

The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete

A young boy (Skylan Brooks) has to fend for himself in the Brooklyn projects when his junkie mother (Jennifer Hudson) goes to jail—or rather, he fends for himself and a neighbor kid (Ethan Dizon), whose own mother has gone similarly missing. Written by Michael Starrbury and directed by George Tillman Jr., this low-key, character-driven drama made the festival rounds for most of the year before finally finding limited release. Now, it deserves a wider audience. Starrbury’s script is hazy on showing the passage of time—it’s a surprise to hear how long the boys have been on their own—but deft at revealing telling details. Tillman’s direction is smooth, getting well-nuanced performances from his two young leads. J.L.

Gravity

Two astronauts (Sandra Bullock, George Clooney) are stranded in space when a debris storm demolishes their space shuttle and wipes out the rest of the crew. Director Alfonso Cuarón, who co-wrote the script with his son Jonás Cuarón, has crafted one of the great white-knuckle thrillers of all time—as airtight as the pressure suits the astronauts wear, without a wasted syllable and just enough featherlight touches to keep the tension from becoming entirely unbearable. Despite Clooney’s presence, it’s a virtual one-woman show for Bullock, and she’s as brilliant as the movie itself, showing the panic, despair, hope and hopelessness in her character’s struggle to survive. The story is so riveting that Cuarón’s virtuosic touches go almost unnoticed, but they’re there, with stunning visual effects to boot. J.L.

Robert Rodriguez has now stretched his fake Grindhouse preview about a 1970s-style Mexican vigilante-outlaw-superspy astronaut into two features and more than 200 minutes of film. If nothing else, give Rodriguez credit for squeezing blood from Danny Trejo’s stone face. The first Machete was a too-literal attempt to culturally reappropriate revenge-flick tropes, and it could never settle on a flattering tone, while Machete Kills is a full-blown comic book throughout. Scattered among the mayhem are shape-shifter bounty hunters, explosive strap-ons, Cuba Gooding Jr., an inspired riff on Star Wars rip-offs, and a scene where Trejo disposes of a bad guy by pulling out his intestines and flinging them into a spinning helicopter rotor. Unfortunately, Machete Kills clocks in at an indulgent 107 minutes, and Rodriguez and his overthe-top band of players are nearly a half-hour short of ideas. D.B.

In an effort to prove that he can do literally anything better than you, Joseph Gordon-Levitt writes, directs and stars in the nimble anti-romantic comedy Don Jon. His sex-obsessed Don is both a Long Island party hound and a strict Catholic devotee, and he brings a ritualistic asceticism to every aspect of his life, from his home-cleaning habits to his many meaningless carnal encounters. Even after Don finds a dream girlfriend (Scarlett Johansson), his most satisfying relationship is with his pornography folder. Don’s lifestyle of self-obsession is fetishized in a manner almost worthy of American Gigolo, but a broader and less engaging tone is employed in the scenes with his sitcomlike family. Still, it’s hard to believe that a film about the toxicity of sexual dehumanization could be this sweet, and that makes Don Jon more than a mere résumé stuffer. D.B.

The improvement of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 over its 2009 animated antecedent is easy to explain—the concept of food-as-animals presents more potential for visual imagination than the concept of foodas-weather. It doesn’t even matter that it’s no longer technically cloudy, and that the chance of meatballs is next to none. As the film opens, aspiring scientist Flint Lockwood has stopped the food storm that threatened his island town of Swallow Falls. Soon enough, his rogue invention starts transforming the leftovers into a cradle of life, creating new species of “food-imals” like snarling taco-diles and screeching shrimpanzees (the invisible hand of natural selection apparently has a thing for puns). Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 doesn’t stray too far from the mold, but the screen practically spills over with visual marvels, and there’s a kid-friendly self-awareness to the humor. D.B.

As she does, she speaks freely to his unhearing ears, telling long-hidden things, as if he were the legendary Patience Stone that absorbs one’s deepest secrets. Director Atiq Rahimi adapts his own novel, from a script by the prolific and versatile Jean-Claude Carrière. The result has much going for it—an understated yet fervent glimpse of a society on the brink of collapse, as well as a startling sexual frankness (in both action and dialogue) for a movie set in a Muslim society. Most of all, it has Farahani, and she’s a striking screen presence, whether delivering her long, halting monologues, striding out with her mustardcolored hijab billowing in the wind, or unveiling an enigmatic smile in the final shot. A Princeton University student with a penchant for online gambling (Justin Timberlake) lands a job with the kingpin of one such site operating out of Costa Rica (Ben Affleck)—then begins to suspect he’s being set up to take some kind of fall, and learns that everything is easier to get into than out of. Brian Koppelman and David Levien’s script is smart and taut, and director Brad Furman serves it up with an eye for the murky shadows of film noir updated to the 21st century. Furman gets sharp performances from all concerned, including Gemma Arterton as Affleck’s arm-candy assistant, whose own motives and priorities remain unclear until the end. Timberlake slides smoothly from smug to desperate to determined, while Affleck has seldom been better: He makes a villain of ingratiating charm straight out of a Hitchcock flick. J.L.

Morgan’s talent for dramatizing recent history (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) remains unimpaired, the race scenes are harrowingly exciting, and Howard gets fine performances from all, especially Brühl in a showcase breakout role. Threatening to undo all these virtues is a soundtrack (including Hans Zimmer’s bombastic music) that’s about 6 trillion decibels too loud: The movie is wonderful to look at but actually physically painful to listen to. In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a young girl enters her school’s Koran recitation contest so she can use the prize money to buy a bicycle—even though riding a bike in public is hardly an appropriate activity for a devout Muslim girl. Writer-director Haifaa Al-Mansour’s first feature sneaks up on you: It begins in a leisurely, diffident manner, almost drably understated in its slice-of-Saudi-life way, as it matter of factly lays out the challenges of growing up female in that part of the world. But Al-Mansour builds her story carefully, mainly through the subtly luminous performances of young Waad Mohammed in the title role and Reem Abdullah as her mother. The movie ends on a highly emotional note that might easily have tipped over into bathos. But Al-Mansour knows her stuff— she earns her emotion honestly. J.L.

Over kombucha and coffee laced with packets of honey on the patio at Bows & Arrows, Zac Nelson of Sacramento’s Biosexual disclosed a little by Blake Gillespie known fact: “I’ve never been in a band that’s been contacted.”

Translated: Record labels seek him out now, not the other way around.

Bandmates Jocelyn Noir and her brother, Michael RJ Saalman, who’ve joined Nelson at the table, nod in agreement.

“From the get-go, [the band’s] had some kind of spiritual significance,” Nelson said.

“We don’t get drunk and write pop songs,” Noir said. “This is something special and deep for the three of us.”

though it was removed from a windup toy in a dentist’s office.

Does the image encourage interpretation of the album title or, perhaps, the music burned into the grooves of the vinyl?

Hardly. But that’s part of Biosexual’s aesthetic.

The title, The Window Wants the Bedroom, comes from a picture Nelson took of a windowsill. He had recently arranged some cutout letters on the sill, much like those old-school refrigerator magnets, and the album title eventually emerged from the sentence.

Interpretation is as meaningful and as meaningless as the listener makes it.

“I really like the way that [the title] sounds,” he said.

“But [it] also makes me feel kind of weird.”

The point is that the title can mean different things to different people— including himself.

“I can make up so many meanings—which is just as important—but you can also allow it to sound cool without applying a meaning,” he said.

The record won’t be available until later this month, but the band is already being pursued for a follow-up by a Canadian cassette label; talks of a third record are also heavy on the trio’s mind. Meanwhile, Alak is prepping an EP for the U.K.-based Kaleidoscope Records, and Saalman recently released an instrumental cassette titled Ripe Hymns on Crash Symbols. phOTO By BOBBy MuLL

Noir, who also plays in Alak, and producer Saalman, also know the feeling of isolated existence. Alak’s 2011 album GRØUPS was released locally on Davis’ KDVS Recordings. While Saalman, under the moniker Woman Year, put out a limited-run release with Life’s Blood, an Irvine, Calif.-based tape label.

Both said it was not until recently they felt their avant-garde recordings were finding an audience outside their circle of friends. Nelson is a prolific artist in experimental-indie music, with numerous solo and collaborative albums on independent labels such as Porter Records, Bathetic Records and Debacle Records.

But even projects with Zach Hill and Robby Moncrieff had only led to marginal notoriety.

Though Nelson’s wanted to use the Biosexual moniker since 2011—the term was coined by Saalman—it’s only lately that interest in the project escalated.

Now, obscure even by Sacramento’s standards, Biosexual’s The Window Wants the Bedroom LP (released on Debacle Records) reveals a band that makes experimental pop, mostly built from electronic demos passed between Saalman and Nelson. Then, once tweaked to their specifications, Noir layers in more guitars and vocals.

As difficult as the record is to describe, Saalman sees the album’s artwork as apropos introduction.

“It’s like a big smile that’s laughing at you because you’re about to get your mind blown,” he said.

“Being young came with not feeling like I connected to my peers most of the time,” Noir said. “It’s taken me 27 years to find my people. They exist!”

Saalman shared a similar perspective.

“I love how weird life has been, and things are perfect now,” he said. “It took a long time to get that perspective, but I wouldn’t be as close to it if I didn’t live out the darker aspects of life first.” Ω

There were even a couple of security guards shakinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; their butts, police duty belts and all. The set closed a bit after 10 p.m. with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Say Hey (I Love You),â&#x20AC;? featuring a bunch of kids dancing around onstage, past their bedtime. Much like Michael Franti & Spearheadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last four albums, the night produced a positive vibe that extolled the virtues of hope, unity and diversity.

mance in Sacramento felt like a long-overdue homecoming show. The show took place at the two-thirds full Sacramento State University Union Ballroom, with much of the audienceâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;which included the frontmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s friends, family and even a former volleyball coachâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;dancing their asses off.

It was the first time heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d played in the Sacramento area for a long time, the singer explained near the beginning of evening. Franti grew up in Davis, where he attended Davis Senior High School (graduating class of 1984), before launching his music career two years later with the Beatnigs, an experimental hiphop and punk-influenced band. After another group, the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, came and went, he formed Michael Franti & Spearhead, which since 1994 has won over audiences worldwide with its blend of hip-hop, punk, reggae, funk and (more recently) EDM. Despite his musicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rebellious nature, Frantiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest local show exuded a safe, family-friendly atmosphere. There were dozens of kids in attendance, thanks to the fact that the gig was all ages.

Multiple times during the showâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;which included a barrage of hits spanning the last decade, including many from his latest album, All Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Franti wove through the audience for sweaty hugs and informal dance-offs. At one point, Frantiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s former volleyball coach tossed a ball at him, and the performer set it back into the crowd. Another highlight featured 20 giant orange and yellow balloons tossed around during â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Sound of Sunshine Going Down.â&#x20AC;?

Then, a small gang of friends and family joined the performance, dancing onstage to the deep ska grooves of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gangsta Girl.â&#x20AC;? About two-thirds of the way through the evening, Franti told a few VH1 Storytellers-esque anecdotes about his mother who adopted him at birth (heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d eventually bring her on stage to great applause), the time he went to Iraq and the Middle East to play for troops and foreign civilians, and the time his friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mom took him to see the Commodores. These stories slowed the pace down a bit, but heavy bass and upbeat songs quickly got the crowd moving again.

Listen, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all adults here, and we know that ballot-stuffing is a thing. That said, here inside the hallowed halls of SN&R headquarters, we do everything we can to ensure fairness. In other words, if nominations consisted solely of a categoryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top vote-getter, then the resulting ballot would feature the same artist in every single category (oh, so youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a folk artist, heavymetal band and hip-hop producer?

James McMurtry remains the balladeer of the tail end of the boomers, the Bob Dylan for those born in the ’60s. From “Where’s Johnny”—a tale of a promising youth who never quite lived up to expectations, mostly because he thinks too much—to “Choctaw Bingo,” the anthem of the Breaking Bad generation before Heisenberg came to be, McMurtry has his finger on the pulse of American life for the less-thanprivileged. Gwar is The Big Bang Theory of metal. The sardonic sci-fi nerds give thrash a theatrical, costumed makeover with production values “Stonehenge”-era Spinal Tap would envy. Formed 30 years ago, the Richmond, Va.-based “alien warriors” deliver beefy METAL metal throb, fueling parodied belligerence and darkly humorous social criticism like “Bring Back the Bomb” and serial-abuser come-on “You Are My Meat.” After journeying Beyond Hell (2006) and enslaving Lust in Space (2009), the group’s 13th studio album Battle Maximus foments an even harder charging old-school sound behind new guitarist Brent Purgason (ex-Cannibal Corpse). Fox & Goose, 9 p.m., $5 If you’re looking to get hip to a local under-the-radar vocalist, Emily Kollars is your girl. Whether singing soulfully on R&B numbers like “Come on Into Me,” or sounding like a siren on the sultry “Blues in F,” Kollars has a presence that is undeniable. “Sharing These Moments” shows off her tender side as she croons through a romantic ballad that would be perfect for a slow dance, and she shows SOUL/R&B sass on the jazzy “Spoke Joe to Jack.” A debut EP is on the way, and the final track listing will be the result of a fan poll from earlier this year. Brooklyn duo Widowspeak is a band you’d be smart to catch now, before it blows up, because blow up it will. The gossamer-rock band has no official website, and there is precious little to be gleaned from what’s been written about it, yet steady buzz abounds. The low profile forces you to focus on the music alone, which is a good thing: It’s something like Mazzy Star and Nancy Sinatra via “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” with a dash of Cat Power. Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe is an everexpanding one. Last year, the San Diegonative funk and jazz saxophonist, flutist R&B and vocalist came through the area teamed with Slightly Stoopid for an epic Beastie Boys tribute. This time around, Denson is bringing out Zach Deputy and the Cosmic Horns in what will be called a Ray Charles Boogaloo Dance Party. Expect Charles’ standards like “Unchain My Heart” with Deputy adding his self-proclaimed “island-infused/gospel/ ninja/soul” to the proceedings. Denson’s other group, the Greyboy Allstars launched a new album, Inland Emperor, into the cosmos earlier this year. Expect a new Tiny Universe release at the turn of the year.

Old Ironsides, 9 p.m., $12

Ancient Astronaut is almost like two different bands. One part of the band writes killer alternative groove-rock songs, and another part writes crazy instrumental sections—a total departure from the rest of the songs.

And it gets way out there with very experimental stuff: prog rock, math rock, post rock, whatever you want to call it. It’s outer-space music. Both sides of the band shine equally well, like two sides of the same weird coin. On ROCK one hand, A.A. demonstrates that it knows how to write a solid, catchy rock tune, and on the other, it shows that it knows how to leave Earth behind and take you to Mars. 1400 Alhambra Boulevard, www.facebook.com/ancientastronautband.

The ninth-annual Halloween Hootenanny is a three-day affair featuring bands and deejays. Enter the Nickel Slots (pictured) to set the tone for the weekend with an alt-country twist to the Americana genre. The group ROCK just premiered a music video for its single, “The Devil’s Chain Gang” at this year’s Sacramento Film & Music Festival. Supporting band Rebel Punk—drawing inspiration from bands like the Clash, Bad Religion and Social Distortion—opens the evening. The rest of the weekend features Aloha From Hell, the Pendletons, the Vintage Vandals, the White Barons, Hormones and more. There have been a few studies (here’s one of them: http://pages.uoregon.edu/bchansen/MML_ Alcohol_Consumption.pdf) that show that states with medical-marijuana laws have fewer suicides and traffic-accident deaths. Correlation isn’t causation, but scientists speculate that, when given the choice, many people will use cannabis instead of alcohol.

This could be why the liquor lobby is against cannabis legalization. And why wouldn’t it be against weed?

Since when are fewer suicides and traffic deaths better than the millions of dollars to be made from the sale of alcoholic beverages? Exactly. In fact, many people use marijuana instead of more harmful drugs.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): This is an

I was walking through my neighborhood when I spied an older woman standing over her aged Yorkshire terrier next to a bush. The dog was in discomfort, squatting and shivering but unable to relieve himself. “He’s having trouble getting his business done,” his owner confided in me. “He’s been struggling for 10 minutes.” I felt a rush of sympathy for the distressed creature. With a flourish of my hand, I said, “More power to you, little one. May you purge your burden.”

The dog instantly defecated. Shrieking her approval, the woman exclaimed, “It’s like you waved a magic wand!” Now I am invoking my wizardry on your behalf, Aries, although in a less literal way: More power to you. May you purge your psychological burden.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “You

mentary-school festival some years ago, I performed the role of the Mad Hatter from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

One of my tasks was to ask kids to make a wish, whereupon I sprinkled their heads with magic fairy dust. Some of the kids were skeptical about the whole business.

They questioned the proposition that the fairy dust would make their wishes come true. A few were so suspicious that they walked away without making a wish or accepting the fairy dust. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In Tim

Burton’s film Alice in Wonderland, Alice asks the White Rabbit, “How long is forever?” The talking rabbit replies, “Sometimes, just one second.” That’s an important piece of information for you to keep in mind, Scorpio. It implies that “forever” may not necessarily, in all cases, last until the universe dies out 5 billion years from now. Forever might actually turn out to be one second or 90 minutes or a month or a year or who knows? So how does this apply to your life right now? Well, a situation you assumed was permanent could ultimately change—perhaps much faster than you have imagined. An apparently everlasting decree or perpetual feeling could unexpectedly shift, as if by magic.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

“I need a little language such as lovers use,” wrote Virginia Woolf in her novel The Waves. “I need no words. Nothing neat,” she wrote. “I need a howl; a cry.” If I’m reading the astrological omens correctly, Sagittarius, Woolf is speaking for you right now. get bored with the idea of becoming a better listener,” writes business blogger Penelope Trunk. “Why would I do that when interrupting people is so much faster?”

If your main goal is to impose your will on people and get things over with as soon as possible, Capricorn, by all means, follow Trunk’s advice this week. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The

last time meteorologists officially added a new type of cloud formation to the International Cloud Atlas was 1951. But they’re considering another one now. It’s called “asperatus,” which is derived from the Latin term undulatus asperatus, meaning “turbulent undulation.” According to The Cloud Appreciation Society, it resembles “the surface of a choppy sea from below.”

But although it looks rough and agitated, it almost never brings a storm. Let’s make asperatus your mascot for the next few weeks, Aquarius. I suspect that you, too, will soon discover something new under the sun. It may at first look turbulent, but I bet it will mostly just be interesting.

A creative headspace Lauren Cole Norton holds an imposing list of creative credentials. In addition to being a poet and musician, the 27-year-old Irish national can add entrepreneur to the mix. First, Norton launched the Davis Flea Market in January 2012. Then, Norton bought an old Audi repair shop on the outskirts of Davis in order to create Third Space, a spot where creatives of all stripes—musicians, artists and vendors—could practice their trades together. Since its soft launch this summer, the multipurpose venue has proved to be a knockout success with live shows, boutique pop-ups and more. SN&R sat down with Norton to talk about creative coaching, artist needs and how her Irish roots fit into these entrepreneurial endeavors.

What does Third Space encompass?

Currently, we have an art collective subleasing about half of the building, and we have a space up front that is used for pop-up shops and can be rented. ... We like to think of Third Space as a business incubator. Our website allows us to promote bands and businesses we’re hosting, and we do a lot of coaching with people who come to us about how they can effectively market what they’re doing and connect to their audience or customers.

Third Space came about as a result of the Davis Flea Market, correct?

Right. I had been involved in multipurpose spaces in Dublin before I moved here, and really wanted to see something similar happening in Davis. The flea market was basically a way for me to test-drive the idea of having small vendors working within the same space to cut down costs, and also create a pool of money [from] which we could pay performers.

You brought the idea for the flea market over from Ireland?

After the economy collapsed in 2008, there was a resurgence in interest in car boot sales and rummage sales and flea markets.

Really, anywhere there was an empty space, a market would pop up. There’s this great street in Dublin called Moore Street, where we’ve had vendors for a couple hundred years. Suddenly, that was considered cool again rather than going to the mall. To be out on a nice day, talking to people, looking through quirky things, that element of discovery, all became a really fun part of shopping.

I was a vendor a few times at the Dublin market before I moved here, and I thought that people would connect with the idea in Davis, where sustainability, cycling, eating locally and going to the farmers market were already so popular.

How has performing as a musician translated into what you do today?

A couple years ago, I started a band called the Souterrain with another Sacramento musician, Sam Shirley. We found [Davis] didn’t have many small venues. There’s Sophia’s [Thai Kitchen], which operates in the summer, but for the rest of the year, you have to find a gig at some event or a house show.

Seeing how popular those were, it seemed like a natural next step to give a proper venue in which to operate.

I thought we could create a space that is funded by the business activities during the day, so there isn’t so much pressure to be lucrative. We can work with volunteers, students and other musicians to create a space to play similar to a house show, but which is fully advertised and that people know to go there.

Interesting business model—creatives supporting creatives.

Has it worked?

It’s been working really well so far. Bands loved coming to play the flea market because we had a guaranteed cash payment for them. We also worked with [UC Davis] Technocultural Studies students to create music videos for the bands, and we’d promote them through our marketing material. So, it wasn’t like they were just coming, playing and getting some money.

Now that we have a venue, and we have so many acts coming through, we’re still learning how to juggle that.

Does this success speak to how big the need is for a space for bands and artists?

Right, but also to the need to grow a listening audience, because there are a lot of great things happening in Davis, such as the Davis Live Music Collective, KDRT [95.7 FM, a volunteer-run radio station] and the network of house shows. So, there are all these things happening that just need to happen in cooperation and collaboration with each other.

For instance, during the Davis Live Music Festival this year, they lost one of their venues due to neighbor complaints a couple of days before it began, and all of those bands were moved to Third Space. This was just days after we’d started doing the flea market, and suddenly, we’re a venue now for a major music festival.

That must have been great for you.

It was a blessing and a curse. All of a sudden, our name is out there, but we had just gotten the keys! This former Audi repair shop was still covered in grease. It wasn’t cute, and we still hadn’t figured out the acoustics.

So it’s all still very new.

Yes. We’re planning on having an official opening in January [2014]. We have been running shows, we’ve had pop-up shops and the flea market. But it’s still so many weekend projects away from being finished.

Every weekend, a bunch of friends show up with rags and paint, and we clean. Ω
