Booze: a personal history Alcohol played a pretty significant role during my formative years—members on both sides of my family knew how to enjoy a drink. Or a few.

In my mother’s parents’ home, the selection was usually wine or beer— both of which flowed freely at parties or as a nightcap.

On my father’s side, drinks were more of the Mad Men variety—elegant cocktails consumed with little regard to the clock. I have a distinct memory of my grandmother nursing a martini as she watched me ice-skate.

Hey, it was the ’80s. Those kinds of things still happened then.

Both of my parents drank regularly, too. There was beer and wine, and, occasionally, my father poured whiskey from a decanter. Sometimes, on my birthdays, I was served a snifter of brandy.

Again, it was the ’80s. That kind of thing was still OK then.

Despite its familiarity, alcohol seemed like a mystery. Not surprisingly, perhaps, as a young adult, I drank as a way to feel grown-up. Eventually, however, I learned to appreciate the nuances of well-made drink—and not just the buzz it produces.

Sacramento’s drinking scene has similarly matured. While it’s always been something of a beer town and enjoyed the riches of regional wineries, it seems like only recently that we’ve graduated beyond cheap well drinks and froufrou pink cocktails.

These days, local bartenders mix impressive and imaginative artisanal drinks.

Starting Wednesday, August 21, the city celebrates the best in craft cocktails with the sixth annual Midtown Cocktail Week. A good drink, of course, is served year-round and citywide, and SN&R’s Cocktail Issue (see Feature Story, page 20) spotlights some of the area’s most interesting creations, bartenders and traditions.

The Restylane family of products includes Restylane®, Restylane-L®, Perlane®, and Perlane-L®. These products can be used to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane may also be used for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years. Ask your doctor which is right for you.

Important Safety Considerations for the Restylane family of products Products in the Restylane family should not be used by people with previous bad allergies, particularly to microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria, or by people with serious allergies to drugs that have previously required in-hospital treatment. These products should not be used by people with bleeding disorders. Products should not be injected anywhere except the skin, just under the skin (Perlane and Perlane-L only), or in the lips (Restylane only). Restylane-L and Perlane-L should not be used by anyone with a known allergy to lidocaine.

Use at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. In these instances, product use could delay healing or make your skin problems worse.

After treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14 days in lips. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years. Rarely, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin. Although rare, red or swollen small bumps may occur. If you have had facial cold sores before, an injection can cause an outbreak. To avoid bruising and bleeding, you should not use the products if you have recently used drugs that thin your blood or prevent clotting. Products should not be used during pregnancy, when breastfeeding, or in patients under 18 years for nasolabial folds.

Not a real city until we fix downtown

Re “Technology fail” (SN&R Scorekeeper, August 8): I have to shake my head at the response to the August 5 Amber Alert. I heard colleagues at work saying they had changed their smartphone settings to block such alerts in the future, and your paper commented that the alert made “little sense,” given that the incident occurred hundreds of miles away, south of San Diego. Well, letter of surprise, the alleged the week kidnapper drove due north, through Northern California, into Oregon and on to Idaho. Seems the alert made more sense than you thought.

How sad some people thought the alert was annoying. We are all for Amber Alerts to protect our children, but don’t you dare bother us when we’re watching TV! What a shame that people have now shut off their alerts. Wonder how they will react when it’s their child who goes missing? The score: minus 656. This number is not arbitrary; it’s the number of children successfully recovered through Amber Alerts, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Re “The Kay after tomorrow” by Nick Miller (SN&R Feature Story, August 8): I have always wanted to live downtown in a city. San Francisco is my ideal, but the weather and rent prices are not. So, I moved downtown.

Sort of. I compromised and moved to the historic R Street area, since all of the downtown housing proper is for low-income folks or really, really rich folks (Hotel Berry and the lofts, respectively).

But it was just not what I imagined it to be. I am a middle-class American who does not want to own a home; that has never been my dream. But my dream is to live in a city—downtown, where life is full of vitality and diversity. I just can’t do that in Sacramento, and it is quite a shame. All of the rental housing downtown (even at R Street) is stupidly overpriced. I had zero amenities, and the only thing to recommend it was that I was a block away from light rail. Well, and that I could officially call downtown “home.”

We really cannot call ourselves a proper city until we fix downtown. And, by the way, I live in Midtown now.

Thank you. Shoka said exactly what I’ve been thinking as I’ve seen the rise of “pork kitsch” everywhere, too: Just because we are vegan doesn’t mean we are pointing out the facts of industrial agriculture, animal welfare and greed to bum meat-eaters out. Agribusiness is for profit, and if you think your pork or any other meat is immune from nasty corporate practices like abuse, chemicals and contamination, think again.

All an arena does, at best, is squeeze the economic balloon into one part of the region (and out of others) but it is new residents and residential density that grow the downtown economy. Slow transformation Despite increased help and a new law inked

by Gov. Jerry Brown, it’s still a struggle for transgender youth Kevin West knew that there were emergency shelters available in Sacramento, but by he couldn’t decide on where to go.

West was born anatomically female, but in his teen years, he came out as a male. He is among the one in five transgender Californians who will experience homelessness at some point after identifying as transgender.

He aged out of foster care nine years ago with only $1,000 in savings from working two years in retail. Having nowhere to go, he stayed in a hotel until his money ran out, and he was forced to live on the streets.

“I literally slept outside and then rode my bike to work [at Kmart],” he said.

While young adults like West make up a disproportionately large subset of the homeless population, all too often they face more serious challenges, such as access to hormone treatment and a sharply increased risk of sexual assault.

Sometimes, the most pressing issue facing transgender youth is determining where they will be welcome.

The NCTE reports that almost one-third of homeless transgender individuals have been turned away from a shelter due to their gender identity, and 42 percent “have been forced to stay in a shelter living as the wrong gender.”

have access to his hormones at the time, so he feared the worst: “It might’ve been in my head, but I was terrified of being raped and getting pregnant.”

This is a reasonable concern.

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, LGBTQ homeless youth are “7.4 times more likely to experience acts of sexual violence” than their heterosexual peers.

Hudson said that homeless transgender youth—particularly transgender women of color—are at the highest risk of sexual violence. These individuals often do not have access to hormones.

As a result, a victim of sexual violence who identifies as male can end up pregnant. This has happened before.

Beyond the safety concerns, homeless transgender youth regularly face obstacles in accessing hormone treatment. West said that his doctor would not supply him with any because it involved needles, and West “didn’t have any place to store [his] medication.”

This sort of treatment, according to Hudson, is not uncommon. “Sometimes a provider will say to a homeless youth, ‘Well, is this really a decision that you are emotionally prepared to make?’

They’re held to a higher bar of accountability around their own decisionmaking simply because they don’t have a home. In reality, they likely left home because they couldn’t get access to their hormones.”

This, in part, is why Sacramento’s Gender Health Center exists. The nonprofit opened its doors in 2010 as an affordable counseling service geared toward the transgender community (though they pledge to serve anyone).

Since opening, the center has expanded to include assistance in name and gender change, hormone prescriptions, and legal aid in tandem with Legal Services of Northern California.

While there are no hard statistics on the local homeless transgender population, Hudson said that the Gender Health Center serves about 30 transgender youth regulars, many of whom are in foster care, and a number of whom are either homeless or formerly homeless.

The Gender Health Center, with its 32 volunteer counselors, fills a large gap in services for the transgender community in Sacramento.

Meanwhile, state legislation protecting transgender youth continues to make headway: Gov. Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 1266, which affirms protections for transgender youth in schools, this past Monday.

But the transgender community sees many more battles on the horizon.

A survey released earlier this year by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force showed an alarming trend of harassment for transgender Californians that came out in grade school or high school, with 75 percent reporting harassment and almost onethird dealing with physical violence.

The survey also revealed that 19 percent of transgender Californians have an annual household income of less than $10,000.

Today, West’s income hovers around that level, but not for reasons one might expect. He has just finished serving in AmeriCorps, the government-service program that famously pays its members wages at the poverty line. He currently lives with his girlfriend, Lindsey, a social worker, while studying education at Sacramento State University.

This past Sunday, the 27-year-old lay recovering from the triathlon he’d competed in that morning in Santa Cruz. He joked about his full beard and discussed the circumstances in which he may or may not reveal that he is transgender.

He recalled running into one triathlon volunteer at a transition station. She had seen him the day before in a T-shirt that read, “Nobody knows I’m a transsexual.” The woman commented on his completing the swimming leg of the race, which took place in unseasonably cold water.

“Thank God,” he responded. “My chesticles were gonna fall off!” Ω

The controversy was fresh in Darlene Anderson’s mind when the former school-board candidate chided SCUSD Board of Education members as they discussed possible annexation August 1.

“My, what a short time ago I was here with all those parents talking about their neighborhood schools getting closed,” she said. “Now, the district is off to acquiring more land and acquiring more students—just

not those targeted students from those higher-poverty neighborhoods … the ones that you’re failing.

“But you’re moving on to higher ground,” she added sarcastically.

Proponents of the district swap argued that it makes sense. The development area sits on the south side of Business 80, and is closer to SCUSD schools than Twin Rivers counterparts, Angelides and several school-board members noted. Parents wanting to take their children to Twin Rivers’ Woodlake Elementary School would need to travel roughly 5 miles by freeway and over the river.

SCUSD’s Theodore Judah Elementary School, on the other hand, is a fiveblock walk.

“It’s virtually impossible to get young people from our site to the schools in Twin Rivers,” Angelides argued.

But questions abound. For instance, does SCUSD covet the real estate because it makes sense, or because it’s hemorrhaged students for more than a decade?

In a word: yes.

The currently uninhabited territory is located where former gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides and his partners plan to erect a controversial 328-home neighborhood known as McKinley Village.

After being approached by Angelides and his Riverview Capital Investments company in June, Twin Rivers agreed to give up its territory on the basis that it’s too broke to school the students the proposed development is expected to attract.

Twin Rivers officials didn’t return SN&R’s requests for comment, but a SCUSD staff report says the former district “does not have sufficient funding to provide classrooms for K-12 students generated by the Project”— not even with a projected $2 million in additional developer impact fees.

But SCUSD wants those developer fees and new students, even with district residents still reeling from the shuttering of seven “underenrolled” elementary schools. A dozen parents and students filed a federal lawsuit in June to reverse closures, saying the district targeted poorer neighborhoods of color.

Board president Jeff Cuneo listed the territory swap’s enrollment and C K TA I L CO E E K W financial benefits in the same breath 2 013 he mentioned education. “I am biased,” he said. “I think our school district can give them an infinitely better education [than Twin Rivers].”

“It helps the district in the long run,” added board member Gustavo Arroyo.

Debate rages over why some 6,300 school-age children have left SCUSD schools since 2001. District officials blame the economy, while critics say it’s the disenfranchisement of minority schools to the benefit of private charter operations. If the district doesn’t untangle this mystery, it may take more than a McKinley Village to raise it.

Just how many new students are projected, where they’d fall in priority enrollment, and the criteria for determining capacity at Theodore Judah and other elementary schools are questions that Cuneo directed staff to answer on the district’s website.

One answer that won’t be there concerns affordable housing. Board member Diana Rodriguez raised the issue, stating that many new families can’t afford current housing prices.

“Now the district is off to acquiring more land and acquiring more students—just not … the ones that you’re failing.”

Darlene Anderson former Sacramento City Unified Board of Education candidate Angelides said his project would include some 40 secondary units known as “granny flats”—essentially, studio apartments that are built over garages or contiguous to a home.

The vast majority of McKinley Village units would be single-family homes ranging between $300,000 and $700,000 in price, Angelides estimated.

Rodriguez said there was “no guarantee” that parents can afford this.

According to SCUSD’s general counsel, the Sacramento County Office of Education has final say on the territory swap. Ω

Nice Tesla, Mr. Mayor SN&R intern Cody Drabble ran into West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon—and his newly acquired 2008 Tesla Roadster, an electric car—last week. So, what better time for an impromptu question-and-answer session?

SN&R: It is a beautiful car.

Mayor Christopher Cabaldon: When the electric vehicle stuff started to happen, of course [I thought] I’d get one, but I have to get a sports car. But they didn’t make that, so I was off the hook. ... Then, they made this, and I was like, “That’s $110,000. That’s not what I meant.”

SN&R: If you go faster, is it less efficient?

Cabaldon: Yeah. And especially once you’re going faster than 50 [miles per hour], it’s going to decline pretty quick. I think that I could get to the Bay Area and back. Not to [Los Angeles] on one charge.

SN&R: If you drove it to L.A., where between here and L.A. would you charge it?

Cabaldon: I would charge at Harris Ranch. Tesla has installed a supercharging station there.

SN&R: How fast does it charge?

Cabaldon: That one [is a high-speed charger and] would take four to five hours to fully charge. But if I can get 190 miles or so on one charge, I wouldn’t need to fully charge to get the rest of the way. So, it’s just a very long lunch at Harris Ranch.

SN&R: So, you’d just get a steak and chill out at Harris Ranch?

Getting muscled Looks like a southeast Sacramento gym has brought in the heavy hitters to take on Sacramento code enforcement.

Got Muscle Health Club, located east of Howe Avenue on Folsom Boulevard, found itself slapped with a warning by the city, telling owners Carl and Elizabeth Fears to take down a sandwich-board sign on their lawn, or else face a fine of up to $900 per day.

Believing that the sign is important for business, Got Muscle called the Institute for Justice, the libertarian law firm most famous for its work on the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United case (it believes that corporations are people, my friend), to take on the city of Sacramento.

Attorney Erica Smith, who will represent Got Muscle, argues that the city’s signage laws are enforced arbitrarily, adding that it looks like the warning came in as a result of a neighbor complaint. Code enforcement was not available for comment at the time of publishing.

Brand awareness Politicians’ private initiatives do some good, but raise millions with little oversight or regulation Sacramento City Council members keep inventing new, creative ways to collect money and funnel it into their own political “brands.” And we need new rules to keep up with their inventions.

Last week, some local pro-labor Democrats asked the California attorney general and Fair Political Practices Commission to investigate Mayor Kevin Johnson’s 501(c)(3) organizations, and the ArvIN collection of hundreds of thousands of

But when the Walmart battle is over, the problem will remain: These nonprofit organizations lack transparency, they lack clear rules, and they mix public resources with the council members’ political interests.

City Councilman Jay Schenirer’s organization, WayUp Sacramento, has gotten considerably less attention than the mayor’s efforts. But it blurs plenty of lines.

WayUp helps to fund programs for at-risk youth in Oak Park, and that’s a perfectly good thing to do.

But last year, Sacramento City Manager John Shirey said it was inappropriate for outside nonprofits—such as Johnson’s education nonprofit Stand Up, or his arena-booster group Think Big Sacramento—to operate out of City Hall or use city resources.

In some ways, Schenirer’s WayUp looks quite similar to Johnson’s groups. WayUp has a website, paid staff and receives big donations through the city’s “behest” system, just as the mayor’s nonprofits do—including checks from businesses like Walmart, AT&T, and Sutter Health, along with foundation support from the California Endowment. WayUp has taken in nearly $800,000 since Schenirer was elected in 2010.

So, why does WayUp get to operate in City Hall after K.J.’s nonprofits were shown the door? The short answer is that WayUp isn’t really a nonprofit, not yet. According to Schenirer, it’s a “brand.”

Schenirer says WayUp will one day move out and be housed at the offices of the nonprofit Nehemiah Community Reinvestment Fund, one of WayUp’s many partners.

In fact, last year, WayUp applied for a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, which stated that WayUp had already been merged into Nehemiah. But a year later, the merger hasn’t actually happened. So, WayUp continues in its in-between state, almost a nonprofit, almost a public entity.

“There’s going to be a transition period. It will depend on funding,” Schenirer told Bites.

He said another $300,000 from the California Endowment was due soon.

“It’s somewhat curious that ‘brand’ is the word they use,” says Jessica Levinson, professor of election law at Loyola Law School. “‘Brand’ can certainly be seen as PR for the candidate.”

She’s not sure Schenirer is doing anything wrong, though, she adds, “The thing that feels a bit funny is that it is using government resources.”

Schenirer says “brand” applies to the community work WayUp does. But of course it’s an extension of Schenirer’s brand as a politician, and an extension of his professional brand, too.

Schenirer is an education consultant; that’s how he makes his money. Among WayUp’s stated goals are “an ambitious, rigorous, and comprehensive strategy of reform” for schools in Schenirer’s district. He told Bites that school reform is “a generic term,” and that, in this case, it means noncontroversial things like school nutrition programs.

But the project description that WayUp sent to the U.S. Department of Education advocates policies that are related to the work done by Schenirer’s consulting business, Capitol Impact LLC, and its principals.

The WayUp brand seems to be where Schenirer’s interests as a public office holder, politician and professional education consultant all intersect. How much intersection is OK? That’s where some sort of city policy would be helpful.

“The lack of any clear definitions means there is a lack of rules,” says Phillip Ung with the political watchdog group Common Cause.

“What Mr. Johnson and the other council members are doing is … innovative. Our biggest fear is that in California, we’ll start to see models like the one Kevin Johnson set up,” he added.

They might want to keep an eye on Schenirer’s variation as well, which Levinson says makes for a “fascinating” but potentially problematic new tool for politicians.

“Until there’s more guidance, politicians will continue to do this. They’d be foolish not to,” she said. Ω |

Every morning, the Google gnomes search the World Wide Web and bring me news about marijuana. My morning begins with reading stories about the latest federal action closing California dispensaries, the ecological damage created by marijuana cultivation, the violence of the Mexican drug cartel, the overcrowding of prisons, the medical benefits of cannabis, the danger of marijuana use and many other fascinating topics.

The one story that Google does not have, and the one I would be very interested to read, is: “What is the Obama administration going to do about the legalization of marijuana in Colorado and l nE aE nK Vo

NSA surveillance necessary Suppose the United States was hit by another terrorist attack, and hundreds of Americans were killed, and afterward, it was discovered that those responsible had been in the country for months, making calls and sending email to each other and to terrorists abroad, yet nobody in the National Security Agency was able to connect the dots and prevent the attack. It’s safe to say the public outrage would dwarf the current outcry over the NSA surveillance program.

As part of its efforts to ferret out terrorist networks, the NSA collects phone numbers and duration of calls, as well as info on email sent and received, to create a database that can be searched for links to terrorist activity. It’s not “wiretapping.”

Calls aren’t listened to nor email read without court approval, which requires reasonable suspicion of terrorist activity. According to the government, the program has helped to thwart 54 terrorist “events.”

Many say they’re outraged by the program, likening it to Watergate-era abuses. We think it would be shocking if the government were not taking such basic steps to protect its citizens.

We live in a world where corporations collect and analyze our personal information every time we use a smartphone, pull out a “store loyalty” card at the supermarket, check in on social media or use Google, all for the purpose of selling advertising and marketing products. For the government not to utilize the same simple data-mining techniques in the interest of national security would be inexcusable. Ω

Realignment isn’t enough California’s long experiment with mass incarceration is drawing to a close. With the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent rejection of the state’s latest request for a delay, California is staring at a federal court order to relieve prison overcrowding by releasing some 10,000 inmates by the end of the year.

It’s the end of an era that began 30 years ago with the passage of the three-strikes and other mandatory-sentencing laws that caused enormous increases in the prison population and budget. By 2006, 144,000 prisoners were stuffed into a system with a capacity of 84,000; costs had quadrupled; and medical care was so inadequate that inmates were dying unnecessarily at a rate of about one per week. Conditions amounted to “cruel and unusual punishment,” a federal court ruled, ordering the state to improve medical care and reduce its prison population to a mere 137.5 percent of capacity.

As California has struggled to comply, the facts have become clear: “Realignment” of the system by housing inmates in other states and county jails isn’t going to do it. The solution lies not in more money for more prisons, but in a reinvestment in drug and mental-health treatment, and a rethinking of the mandatory-sentencing laws that caused the problem. Ω

Other marquee events include the Best Dam Show—a salute to Amsterdam—at Grange Restaurant & Bar on Friday, August 23; the West End Art Show at Blackbird Kitchen & Bar on Saturday, August 24; and a Best in Show finale at The Red Rabbit Kitchen & Bar on Sunday, August 25.

Look out for pop-up competitions, too, such as the karaoke competition at Shady Lady on Tuesday, August 20. Elsewhere, drinkers will find carnival games and even a pig roast.

But Sacramento’s cocktail culture can’t be confined to just one week, of course—it’s year-round with a radius that far exceeds Midtown’s grid. The following is SN&R’s guide on what to sip and how to order it, tips on making your own drinks, how to deal if you (accidentally, of course) overindulge, and what to do if you’re the only one not ordering booze at the bar.

We’ll, uh, drink to that.

Midtown Cocktail Week, organized by the Midtown Business Association and now in its sixth year, returns with classes, competitions and—duh—cocktails.

Myriad restaurants and bars will celebrate with a “Welcome to the Show” theme: Skilled cocktail crafters will shake, stir and strain to show Sacramento that Midtown is the place to get innovative and fresh drinks.

The drink makers over at Shady Lady Saloon, for example, are veterans of the annual event.

This year, they’re teaming up with the folks at LowBrau to kick off the week with The Big Show on Wednesday, August 21.

For the first competition, six local bartenders will be tasked with impressing judges with a cocktail made from Bols Genever Holland gin. The judging panel includes Martin Cate, a San Francisco-based rum and exotic-cocktail expert and owner of Smuggler’s Cove; and David Wondrich, a cocktail writer for Esquire and author of Imbibe!, the first cocktail-related book to win a James Beard Award.

#Trending Ditch the White Linen—this year’s it Drinks are going internationaL Talk To enough area barTenders and you’ll start to notice that those in the know are quite humble about predicting the future— one can never be too sure when it comes to the predilections of the booze-consuming public. Over the past few years, we’ve seen the proliferation of White Linens and Moscow Mules (which resulted in a lot of missing copper mugs, according to bartender Dave Kile of Shady Lady Saloon—get it together, drunkards), variations on a French 77, Horse’s Necks galore, elderflower everything, whateverinfused bourbon. And Fireball Whisky on tap.

What’s in store for our much-vaunted, ever-evolving cocktail scene moving forward? Kile, recently returned from the Tales of the Cocktail convention in New Orleans in July, subscribes to a more general idea of going international: “We’ve pretty much explored everything about the drinks we know. I think it’s going to be about learning how people drink in other countries.”

Points in case: Spirits from Latin America have been on the rise—pisco, a grape brandy popular in Chile and Peru; and more mescal.

Brad Peters, vice president of the Sacramento chapter of the United States Bartenders’ Guild and beverage manager of Hock Farm, concurred: “The public’s cocktail IQ is on the rise—more guests are asking for specific rye [whiskeys] or drinking lesser-known artisanal spirits.”

Michael Migliore of Lucca Restaurant and Bar expects that area bartenders will draw inspiration from and collaborate with the burgeoning “farm-to-fork” movement.

“We cook with ice. I want to continue a trend where cocktails take on a culinary prowess.

I want my cocktails to be a reflection of my attitude towards cooking and food and would like to see every craft bartender in Sacramento take that approach.”

But while there’s no doubt that the trade has become much more artful than obliging an imbiber’s hankering to get tanked, with great power comes great responsibility, said Peters: “As a bartender, you are always onstage, always performing for an audience. However, some bartenders get so into the performance, they tend to forget who the real star of the show is—the guest.”

Patrons have to do their part, too, though.

With the increasing presence of craft cocktails in a greater number of bars, so comes cocktail-snob backlash: Don’t call your bartender a “mixologist”—they hate that. And be adventurous.

“It just comes off as somewhat insulting when people refuse to try something we create and settle for a vodka soda,” Migliore said.

In other words, trust your bartender, and take that leap of faith straight into the cachaça bottle. Drinking has always been an adventure, and our local barkeeps are here to be your guide. (D.D.)

1. don’t order a bloody mary, ever (except at brunch). If you do order

a Bloody Mary, you’re guaranteed to annoy any bartender, especially if the place is packed. Making this drink is a complex and time-consuming task.

“If you order a Bloody Mary after a certain time of night, we’re going to look at you like, ‘Who is this idiot?’” said Huey Tidwell at Club 2 Me (2565 Franklin Boulevard).

2. don’t order a drink unless you know what’s in it.

shady lady saloon’s absinThe

Shady Lady Saloon serves absinthe, presented in the French style, with a little bit of sweetener dropped in. It’s a strong drink, with some of the bar’s absinthes being around 65 percent alcohol by volume. Warning: It some contains thujone, which may or may not cause some sort of hallucinations. The Tequila Drop, a unique mash-up of Mexican and Italian drinks—sort of like a tequila-based limoncello—features tequila, lemon, lime, honey and piloncillo (Mexican brown sugar). Think of it as boozy candy. It costs $8. 2730 J Street, (916) 442-2552, www.centrococina.com.

This food-heavy drink starts off with hot sake.

Then, a raw quail egg, a raw oyster, ponzu (a lemon-based soy sauce) and Sriracha sauce.

Tequila Museo Mayahuel’s FloR de nopal

dive bAr hidden gems when anOther Bud light just wOn’t dO The dives in This cockTailing town offer cheap drinks in dimly lit quarters, and they don’t want any funny business— which is part of their charm. In short, don’t go asking for a Mad Men-styled Old Fashioned or a Manhattan. Keep it simple, order a cheap American lager, right? Not exactly. There are some bars that happily bridge the gap between dingy dive and craft-cocktail hot spot. SN&R did the work for you and found five boozy jewels hiding in plain sight.

Club Raven

If you want a tasty cocktail without having to elbow out pretentious drinkers, bartender Rhonda Masters serves up a Pretty in Pink (SN&R helped her name it!), with Absolut Hibiskus vodka, triple sec, Rose’s lime juice, sweet and sour, a squeeze of fresh lime and a splash of cranberry juice. Bar director Evan Cloud requires each bartender to come up with a specialty cocktail and shot at the sports bar. He recommends the Creepy Evan: Absolut Wild Tea vodka, Absolut Citron, a squeeze of a full lemon, triple sec, granulated sugar and Sprite. Cloud said it’s called the Creepy Evan “because it creeps up on you.” We’ll take his word for it.

CoCktails don’t have to be Craft to be good Guy walks into a bar.

(Let’s say it’s me.) Guy asks the bartender for a Jameson and club.

Bartender leans in. “You in the industry?”

“Industry?” the guy asks.

The bartender squints. “Yeah.”

“Like porn?”

The bartender recoils. “No! The service industry.”

In my defense, the barkeep had overly groomed facial hair. The point is, I am not in the industry— service or otherwise. At one point during the recession, when I was between journalism gigs, I briefly considered pursuing a bartender’s license. This was a fantasy. In this supply-and-demand economy, I know on which side of the bar I belong.

That said, I have a liver, a refrigerator and a desire to tax both.

Maybe I’m like you: I enjoy drinking, but dislike exerting too much effort getting drunk. (You need a perforated spoon and two separate glasses to prepare absinthe? See ya.) Most of us will never be craft-cocktail masters, but we’re not above playing chemistry set with the random bottles chilling in the back of our cool box.

Through trial and (mostly) error, I’ve learned what works and

During a phallic-themed birthday party, for instance, I blended Bushmills Irish Whiskey with Mountain Dew, and served it up as a “Whiskey Dick.” Appropriate name, terrible beverage—it even left one’s palate flaccid.

But happy accidents do occur.

At a summer barbecue, when supplies ran low, I gambled on midshelf vodka with diet blackcherry Hansen’s soda, then splashed in tangerine juice. The improvised cocktail was an instant hit, despite its lame moniker: Orange Simpleton.

Friends and I have had similar luck meshing vodka and Vitaminwater; rum and orange juice (this was before we learned it’s called a Scurvy Medic); ice tea, lemonade and tequila (the Arnold Facepalmer); and Jameson and—you know what? eople call Sacramento the River City. So we might as well enjoy our rivers, right?

I’m not talking about joining a Rage on the River-style booze cruise or dining on the Delta King.

I’m simply pointing out that Rio Ramaza Marina, RV & Event Park’s summer-event season is underway—which means that the venue’s event manager, Louisiana Sue, has booked a diverse array of quirky, alternative and outside-the-box events right along the river.

Though Rio Ramaza’s season officially launched with the City of Trees Reggae Music Festival and the Coors Light Ribs on the River festival earlier this summer, it kicks into high gear with a bunch of other events this month—starting with Jiving on the River this weekend. Bands at this “jazz, jump and jive”-themed music festival include the Crescent Katz, the Element Brass Band and the Kyle Rowland Blues Band. Entry costs $10, and food and drinks are available for a few extra dollars.

Next, the three-day One Love One Heart Reggae Festival happens from Friday, August 30, to Sunday, September 1. Its lineup combines touring artists such as headliners Prezident Brown and Glen Washington with locals like Arden Park Roots and King Hopeton. It also features food, sweets and

An imperfect 10 Capital Dime 1801 L Street, Suite 50; (916) 443-1010; www.capitaldime.com You’ve probably already heard of Capital Dime: the restaurant that has Sacramento foodies (or at least the ones who call themselves that) by Garrett McCord salivating at the doors and begging to finally eat chef Noah Zonca’s food without having to cough up rent money. Zonca hails from The Kitchen, one of Sacramento’s toitiest restaurants, so people are curious to see him put out food that’ll only cost a tenner.

Exceptional food for a reasonable price is the tantalus for most restaurants—always desired but usually out of reach. Capital rating: Dime, however, seems to have kicked off HHH 1/2 these shackles.

The menu is split up into “Dime plates” dinner for one: (not to be confused with small plates, $15 - $25 as they are anything but), “rabbit food” (which is not vegetarian, as indicated by the beef carpaccio), sandwiches (selfexplanatory) and “plates” (which are only served at dinner).

The Dime plates and rabbit food both go for $10. This, and the idea that every single dish is supposed to be a “Perfect 10,” is the idea behind the restaurant’s name.

There’s one simple dish called clams H chorizo on the menu, and it’s something fLawed you would stab your mother with a seafood HH fork over, should she attempt to pluck one haS momentS of its delightful bivalves from your plate.

HHH Here, seared chorizo is drowned in white appeaLing wine and garlic, creating a silky palominocolored broth in which the teeniest clams HHHH authoritative ever are cooked.

The only problem with the dish was that HHHHH epic many unopened clams made it to our table.

In addition, we were provided thin, stale toast. One cannot sop up that epiphanyinducing broth with stale toast.

I know Yelpers have been orgasmically excited over the watermelon-and-shrimp salad. Not sure why. The watermelon’s gloppy texture and soft edges indicated it Still hungry? had likely been cut the day before. And the Search Sn&r’s bonito flakes didn’t provide the saltiness “dining directory” to find local needed for balance, and the mozzarella was restaurants by name lost. It’s intensely smoky and delightful.

The best word I can come up for the steak sandwich, however, is “fine.” The sandwich is fine. Not great. Not bad. The steak was cooked perfectly, but there was, again, no salt, and thickly cut slabs that couldn’t be bitten through made for a bit of a chore. The sandwich would have been scores better flavorwise with a bit of sauce BEFORE

(even tossing the greens in a bit of vinegar would have done wonders).

The fries are fried in rice oil with their skins on—which always means more flavor.

Delicate, crisp and fantastic to munch on.

Service had some missteps, such as menu haziness and nerves, but overall, it’s both jubilant and professional. The waitstaff seems to enjoy being there, and that’s always refreshing.

Yet for all the little flaws, you can see the forethought behind it. There’s obviously a meditation on how to perfect classic dishes and generate innovative recipes, and knowing when they’ve achieved nirvana. With a chef like Zonca, you know these hiccups will fade. Ω

won’t find any “challenging” dishes on this menu—just delicious local and seasonal food such as the Green Curry & Pumpkin Soup, which has a Southeast Asian flair. A spinach salad features ingredients that could be considered boring elsewhere: blue-cheese dressing, bacon, onion. But here, the sharply cheesy buttermilk dressing and the woodsy pine nuts make it a salad to remember. Grange’s brunch puts other local offerings to shame. The home fries are like marvelously crispy Spanish patatas bravas. A grilled-hamand-Gruyere sandwich is just buttery enough, and an eggwhite frittata is more than a bone thrown to the cholesterolchallenged; it’s a worthy dish in its own right. American.

Midtown 24K Chocolat Cafe This cafe serves a solid, if very limited, brunch and lunch menu. One offering is a firm wedge of frittata with a strong tang of sharp cheddar that almost but doesn’t quite jibe with the slightly spicy mole sauce on the plate.The spinach curry, made creamy by coconut milk rather than dairy, comes topped with cubes of tofu and tiny diced scallion and red bell pepper and rests atop a smooth potato cake. A side of garbanzobean salad is well-flavored with the surprising combination of

mint and apricot. The place, located inside Ancient Future, has “chocolat” in the name, and chocolate is in many of the menu offerings, including a tiny cup of hot Mexican drinking chocolate, and chocolatecherry scones served crisp and hot, studded with big chunks of bittersweet chocolate and tart dried cherries. Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co. The restaurant, by the same owners as Midtown’s The Golden Bear, sports a firefighting theme (a ladder on the ceiling duct work, shiny silver wallpaper with a rat-and-hydrant motif, et al) and a bar setup that encourages patrons to talk to each other. An interesting wine list includes entries from Spain and Israel; there are also draft cocktails and numerous beers on tap. The brunch menu is heavy on the eggs, prepared in lots of ways. One option is the Croque Madame, a ham-and-Gruyere sandwich usually battered with egg.

This one had a fried egg and béchamel, with a generous smear of mustard inside.

The mountain of potato hash alongside tasted flavorful and not too greasy. Another highlight includes an excellent smoked-eggplant baba ganoush, which is smoky and garlicky and served with warm flatbread wedges and oil-cured olives. American.

LowBrau This place specializes in beer and bratwursts. Both are done smashingly. The sausage is wrapped in a tight, snappy skin like a gimp suit, which gets nicely charred by the chefs.

Within it lies a beguilingly spicy and juicy piece of meat. Get it with a pretzel roll for a truly exciting experience. There are vegan options, too: The Italian, an eggplant-based brat, has a surprisingly sausagelike texture that no self-respecting carnivore will turn it down for lack of flavor. Toppings include sauerkraut, a “Bier Cheese” sauce and caramelized onions.

The idea behind Duck Fat Fries is a glorious one, yet somehow still falls short. You just expect something more when you see the words “duck fat.” The beer selection is epic. East Sac Hot City Pizza This East Sacramento eatery is probably better known for its beer than its food, but its pizza is pretty darn good. Each slice is made with a unique multigrain crust that’s soft, airy and helps soak up a belly full of beer. There are also interesting topping combinations, notably a section full of chicken-topped pizza, plenty of vegetarian options and handful of Pacific Islanderthemed pies, such as the Hawaii on Fire, which comes topped with sweet Thai chili sauce, Canadian bacon, pepperoni, green peppers, pineapple, jalapeño and mozzarella cheese. Of course, beer is the real draw here, and Hot City gets an extra star for its fine selection. With so many choices—there are several fridges full of bottled beer and a handful of rotating taps—selecting a brew can be a tremendously difficult but worthwhile undertaking. Pizza.

The Rind This is a fromage fanatic’s delight with a menu that changes frequently. A chalkboard by the bar lists the daily suggested trios for cheese boards, but order the Diving Board to choose your own combo. Each arrives with six crisp toasts and two sides, like dried fruit and honey. The rations are small, but reasonable for two people. Buy any of the cheeses by the pound. Ask for the list at the bar. There are also many grilled-cheese sandwich choices and several versions of mac ’n’ cheese, including Not Your Mom’s Mac with Parmesan,

Istanbul Bistro Turkish chef Murat Bozkurt and brother Ekrem co-own this paean to their homeland, with Ekrem usually at the front of the house, infusing the space with

cheer. Turkish cuisine features aspects of Greek, Moroccan and Middle Eastern flavors.

The appetizer combo plate offers an impressive sampling.

Acili ezme is a chopped, slightly spicy mixture of tomatoes, cucumber and walnuts that’s delicious paired with accompanying flatbread wedges. For entrees, try the borani, a lamb stew with garbanzos, carrots, potatoes and currants. The meat is very tender, while the veggies arrived nicely al dente. Also good is the chicken shish plate (souvlaki), which features two skewers of marinated grilled chicken that’s moist and succulent. There are also quite a few choices for vegetarians, including flatbread topped like pizza, with spinach and feta or mozzarella and egg. Turkish. 3260 B J St., (916) 449-8810. Dinner for one: $15-$20. South Sac Blue Moon Cafe and Karaoke In Sac, most people equate Hong Kongstyle cuisine with dim sum, but this restaurant, which also features private karaoke rooms, serves up tasty, familiar food by way of rice plates, sandwiches, noodle bowls, soups and stirfries. A few random Japanese (ramen, fried udon), French (sweet or savory crepes), Russian (borscht), Korean (beef and kimchi hot pot) and Italian (various pastas) foods add to the feeling that whatever your cultural background, you’ll find a comfort dish from your childhood to wrap its arms

Arden/ Carmichael Skip’s Kitchen You know you’re at an American restaurant when a cheeseburger is one of the healthiest items on the menu.

Sure enough, Skip’s Kitchen features a lot of calorie-rich items, such as fried macaroniand-cheese balls, ravioli, chicken strips, chicken wings and shrimp, plus creamy Oreo milkshakes. There are salads, too, but the best dish on the menu is the burger. All five styles (original, mushroom and Swiss, bacon and cheddar, three-cheese, and Western) are served on a brioche bun and cooked “medium,” unless otherwise specified. The kitchen offers a house-made veggie burger as well. If there’s such a thing as a “gourmet” burger that can rightfully sell for $10, this is probably it. American.

Land Park/ Curtis Park Burgess Brothers’ Burgers This burger joint’s motto is “Committed to Service,” and that’s evidenced in its outstanding customer service. The food is also exceptional.

There are plenty of burgers on the menu—all smoked before they’re grilled. The one-third pound Tactical Blue Burger is served with blue cheese, tomato, lettuce and fried onions.

With a generous slathering of the “Patrol” sauce, it’s full of flavor but not too smoky. Don’t miss the barbecue, though. The pulled-pork sandwich is nicely smoked and shredded, piled on a garlic roll. There are also kidsized sliders and the Code 4 vegetarian burger, made with a portobello mushroom.

The Hideaway Bar & Grill This bar fills a niche Sacramento might not have known it lacked with its vague rockabilly vibe, lots of greased hair on the men, brightly dyed hair in retro styles and cat-eye glasses on the ladies, and an abundance of black clothes and tattoo sleeves for all. The liquor selection is basic (no craft cocktails here).

The menu’s heavy on fried appetizers, salads, sandwiches and burgers, the latter of which are architectural, towering assemblages. Happily, the fluffy charred buns are sturdy enough to hold up when the tower is squeezed to a more realistic height. A meaty veggie burger gets crunch from fried pickles and sweet heat from barbecue sauce. Overall, the Hideaway offers cheap beer, adequate bar food and a comfortable place to hang with out friends. a dish that resulted from the Chinese immigrants’ influence on Peruvian cuisine. Here, it’s served with shrimp and crispy fried pork. The lomo saltado oozes with an incredibly smoky flavor—apparently, the result of cooking the beef in pisco, a type of brandy popular in Peru. The star of the arroz con pato isn’t the duck or the rice, but rather a house-made salsa criolla, consisting of pickled onion and cilantro. Whatever you order, La Huaca’s attention to detail makes it the ideal place to be introduced to the complexities found in this regional cuisine.

Folsom Back Wine Bar & Bistro Back has

Roseville La Huaca This Peruvian eatery offers an experience decidedly upscale in every way: décor, art, lighting, presentation, price and—most importantly—taste. Peru’s national dish is ceviche, seafood cured in lime, salt and chili, and it’s a must-have starter. Try the mixto version, which features fish, shrimp, octopus and calamari, or sample the spicier ceviche de aji amarillo—both are exceptionally piquant and hearty. Entree recommendations include the arroz chaufa,

nuzzled itself into a comfortable niche with an eclectic wine selection and—albeit unfocused—menu that draws an upscale crowd. The bruschetta plate arrives with four types of toppings, two of each: goat cheese, avocado, caramelized onion and tomato. They don’t suck, but they aren’t great. A rib-eye steak with a basil-and-tomato compound butter is served cooked to perfection. But the chocolate soufflé is like having a hot date and then finding out he’s a terrible kisser: greatly disappointing. In the end, a little refinery needs to happen to make the food at Back unique enough for the

average Sacramento diner to find it worth the trip, but for the Folsom diner who feels Grange Restaurant & Bar is too far, then Back will do right enough.

Lotus 8 The menu here is organized with sections such as “Our Most Popular Dishes,” “If You’re Feeling Adventurous” and the “Chef’s Special” tasting list, which offers dishes less familiar to American diners. Worthy options include the fried-milk appetizer, which is made of sweetened milk that’s been battered and fried and tastes like pillows of the lightest cheesecake. Pair it with the sweet-and-sour sauce, or top it with powdered sugar for a dessert. The salted egg with pumpkin arrives as lightly battered, fried half-moons topped with hard-boiled egg. With classic sweet and salty complements, the flavor is even better with a drizzle of hot chili sauce. The fried tofu with salt and pepper is exceptional. Cubes of fried, silky tofu taste like custardy goodness. This is the kind of tofu that could almost make one give up meat. Chinese.

I read your article, “Digitial integrity vs. the zombies” (SN&R Arts&Culture, July 25) while waiting for someone at a restaurant. While we were eating, I noticed a few parents handing their cellphones to small children to keep them occupied. The children were crawling on the ground, videotaping people’s legs, taping conversations, etc.

I thought about confronting the parents but was afraid they would be rude, the kids would tape the encounter, and it would get posted online. We ate fast and left. What’s a better way to handle this?

Ask the restaurant manager to speak to the diners and their children. Most parents will not allow their kids to engage in behaviors that make other diners uncomfortable. Moms and dads who use a cellphone as a babysitter are usually so desperate for an uninterrupted adult conversation, they fail to watch their kids. But if parents neglect to teach children how to behave in shared public spaces, step in. It takes a village to raise a child.

I hooked up with this guy a couple of times over summer but just found out that he has a girlfriend, and she and I are sharing a dorm room. How crazy is that? I was looking at her Instagram feed and realized that they were together when he cheated on her with me. Should I tell her? Or wait and see if she finds out, then play like I didn’t really know?

Translation: “Should I spend the school year anxious that my roommate will find out I had sex with her boyfriend?” No, you should not. But once she learns the truth, it will be very difficult to live together. She will be angry over the betrayal, and it’s likely that she will blame you more than she blames her guy. It’s not logical, I know, but you are an easy target, because her feelings for you are simple. After all, she barely knows you.

And, yes, you have created a mess. Consider the time you have spent worrying about this situation, the stress you will endure when you tell her (and you have to tell her) and the stress afterward when she glares at you from across campus (after she requests a new roommate).

Ask yourself: Were those hookups worth it? No way. Please learn how to treat yourself with respect so you can have a relationship with a guy who values integrity and you. Ω

And then there were all those Indians. They thought America was theirs, but he showed them.

have lesser roles (ain’t that just like politics?), but Mariana Seda as Rachel Jackson and Jennifer Morrison as the female soloist— whose “Ten Little Indians” is a haunting highlight of the show—stand out. Ω

young Green Valley Theatre Company. In it, Old Hickory (as performed by Jacob Montoya, all tight pants, eyeliner and microphone in hand) is one hard piece of wood. He’s a sexy rock-star president—the first. Alex Timbers wrote the book, and Michael Friedman provided the music and lyrics for this daft tale that mixes history and histrionics into a satire of American politics that may have been right for its time but seems so wrong now. Jackson embodies that sense of entitlement that led a bunch of immigrant invaders to the New World to claim it, tame it and, ultimately, maim it. And be proud of it!

Spunky and subversive at its best, Bloody Bloody can be downright juvenile and offensive at its worst. What to make of that tea-bag offer? But director Christopher Cook’s game cast, including the hilariously over-the-top Elio Gutierrez as a fey Martin Van Buren, Eddie Voyce as John Quincy Adams, Brent Randolph as John C. Calhoun, Michael Haleva as James Monroe and Nick Thompson as Henry Clay, is quite good. Women seem to

Arthur Conan Doyle created the enduringly popular Sherlock Holmes character in the 1880s. And as Doyle’s stories passed into public domain, others appropriated the detective to create new stories of their own, like Sherlock’s Last Case—a script written in the 1980s by American playwright and director Charles Marowitz, which enjoyed a Broadway run featuring Frank Langella as you know who. The play falls somewhere between clever spoof and affectionate fan fiction.

We can’t discuss the plot without spoiling the fun. Suffice to say that there’s a threat from the (ostensible) offspring of Holmes’ great nemesis (Professor Moriarty), a hidden dungeon and a “perfect crime.” The playwright also projects some modern psychology onto the Victorian era: Holmes (always a know-itall) gets pretty close to insufferable in the way he lords it over others in some scenes, which contributes to the play’s outcome.

This production by Main Street Theatre Works features lots of interaction between Kevin Kirtlan (a 30-something Holmes) and Brandon Rapoza (Dr. Watson). Their relationship is illuminated in several scenes, some more successful than others. And the ladies also leave a favorable impression in their supporting parts: The estimable Kelley Ogden shines as a woman of mystery, and Georgann Wallace romps as the dowdy housekeeper Mrs. Hudson. Scott Adams rounds out the cast as the plodding Inspector Lestrade.

Director Julie Anchor mitigates much of the script’s convoluted plotting and longish speeches. There are nice Victorian costumes

by Nancy Street and an attractive set by Susan McCandless. And the Kennedy Mine Amphitheatre continues to be a lovely venue to enjoy a show on a summer evening.

Comedian Will Durst has shifted gears after decades of making a name for himself as a political humorist. The 32-year veteran of comedy visits Sacramento Friday, August 23, with a show titled BoomeRaging: From LSD to OMG, in which he riffs on his own life, his generation and the occasional acid flashback. Despite its main focus on the baby-boomer generation, the show will appeal to those of all ages, and will also include some political jokes—because politics did, of course, play a huge part in the lives of the boomers. The show is presented by Humor Times, the Sacramento-based publication that’s run Durst’s weekly comedy column for the last 20 years. The best part? This movie is not named The Butler. Do not call it The Butler.

Officially and onscreen, it’s Lee Daniels’ The Butler, giving director-producer Daniels by Daniel Barnes a before-the-title artistic possessive typically afforded to such luminaries as Clive Barker, M. Night Shyamalan and Mr. Magorium of Wonder Emporium fame.

The curious choice to title it Lee Daniels’ The Butler (Daniels was Oscar-nominated a few years back, but he’s hardly a household name) ostensibly indicates pride of ownership in the finished product. However, it could also have been a sneaky ploy by The Weinstein Company—no strangers to sneaky ploys—to serve up a ready-made fall guy for this treacledrenched stinker.

Daniels broke through with 2009’s Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire, which he directed like it was the last movie he would ever make. Although critically overrated, the emotional intensity of Precious generally offset Daniels’ overindulgences. No such luck for his 2012 disaster The Paperboy, a would-be potboiler so ugly, Nicole Kidman urinating on Zac Efron is one of the five least offensive things that happens in it.

Lee Daniels’ The Butler is not based on a novel, but is rather “inspired by true events”— much like John Hinckley Jr. was “inspired” by The Catcher in the Rye. Actually, the film’s adapted from a Washington Post article about real-life White House butler Eugene Allen, a black man who served eight presidents during some of the most turbulent times in American history.

Daniels took that kernel and blew it up into a Gump’s-eye-view of the civil-rights era that is Oscar chum at its most pandering.

Forest Whitaker, caked in so much aging and de-aging latex that he looks like an audioanimatronics figure at Disneyland Presents Great Moments With Lee Daniels’ The Butler, plays Cecil Gaines, son of a murdered cotton farmer reborn through a life of servitude at the White House.

There is a seed of a compelling film in Cecil’s strained relationship with his increasingly revolutionary son and their parallel struggles against racial inequality. Unfortunately, Daniels and screenwriter Danny Strong realize that potential in only a handful of scenes, mostly wallowing in biopic clichés and calculated hearttugging instead.

The film’s news-montage take on history is so absurd it borders on parody, without any indication that Daniels gets the joke. Cecil’s son doesn’t just join the civil-rights movement—he participates in the Greensboro sit-ins, gets pummeled by fire hoses in Birmingham, rides the Freedom Riders bus, is at the Lorraine Motel when Martin Luther King Jr. gets shot, and seemingly, the next day, is hanging out with the Oakland Black Panthers. Even Forrest Gump didn’t get around that much, and he was incredibly fast.

Lee Daniels’ The Butler fails on basic visual and narrative levels, even while turning Rodrigo Leão’s musical score up to 11 in an attempt to win a thousand Oscars at once. As in Precious and The Paperboy, Daniels can’t shape a single sequence, or decide what kind of movie he wants to make. The visuals are hopelessly chaotic, while entire characters and subplots could be cut with no noticeable scars.

Scene after scene drags on without a discernible beginning or end, and as a result, the movie seems bottomless. Absent of any thematic cohesion or narrative coherence, Lee Daniels’ The Butler never gains momentum, even as the story stampedes through history like a raging bull.

Whitaker is strong as usual, but the presidents are portrayed in a series of distracting star cameos by the likes of Robin Williams as Eisenhower and James Marsden as Kennedy.

These cameos might be the main box-office draw, but they’re mostly Saturday Night Livelevel impressions played under mountains of makeup (most boggling: Alan Rickman looking and acting nothing like Ronald Reagan).

Only John Cusack’s surprising turn rises above the level of a gimmick—with just a few mumbles and glances, his Nixon is alternately slimy, embittered and desperately in need of approval, even from those paid to serve him.

Oprah Winfrey is also featured, but the coup de grace is civil-rights era radical Jane Fonda, bewigged and bepearled to portray Nancy Reagan in a late, throwaway scene. This is the kind of stunt casting gag that works if your movie is Mel Brooks’ The Butler, not if it’s a self-important snoozer like Lee Daniels’ The Butler. Ω

2 Guns

While Tom Cruise and Will Smith save the universe every other summer, Denzel Washington has carved out a middle-class niche for himself making relatively low-key genre films. His latest movie, 2 Guns, doesn’t ask him or co-star Mark Wahlberg to bring anything more than charm to the table, and that’s the problem. As undercover agents set up by their superiors and hunted by the CIA, Washington and Wahlberg can perform this Butch-and-Sundance Kid shtick in their sleep, and practically do. Their apathy apparently caught on, as the slack screenplay stumbles over loose ends, and director Baltasar Kormákur fails to find a consistent tone. Kormákur lets his stars preen like they’re in Ocean’s Fourteen one minute, casually endorses torture the next, and finally offers a lone female character so thoroughly exploited, it would make Peter Berg blush. A snooty New York socialite (Cate Blanchett), left penniless when her crooked financier husband (Alec Baldwin) goes to prison, moves in with her working-class sister in San Francisco (Sally Hawkins). Critic Walter Kerr once wrote, “Neil Simon didn’t have an idea for a play this year, but he wrote one anyway.” Well, Woody Allen didn’t have an idea for a movie, so he did a riff on A Streetcar Named Desire. But Allen never gets the colored lights going. The role of Stanley Kowalski is drained of sexual energy and divvied up between the sister’s ex-husband (Andrew Dice Clay) and present boyfriend (Bobby Cannavale); without that conflict, Streetcar lacks a core, and one is missing here. The whole is less than the sum of its parts, though some parts (especially Blanchett’s performance) are well worth watching. J.L.

The son of the Greek god Poseidon and a mortal mother (Logan Lerman) and his best friends (Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson) set off in quest of the legendary Golden Fleece in order to save their haven, Camp HalfBlood. The second movie from Rick Riordan’s Harry Potter-clone novels is a considerable improvement on the first (Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief, which was pretty good to begin with). A new writer (Mark Guggenheim) and director (Thor Freudenthal) stick closer to the book than the first movie did, while still streamlining and simplifying the plot. The result is an exciting kids’ adventure movie and a nifty eye-candy-coated introduction to classical

It still stands for “Retired, Extremely Dangerous,” just as in the 2010 movie and the comic books it was based on (by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner). This time, courtesy of writers Jon and Erich Hoeber and director Dean Parisot, the emphasis is on “comic” as well as “dangerous,” as retired CIA agent Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), his sweetheart Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker) and colleague Marvin Boggs (John Malkovich) swing into action to find a lost nuclear bomb—and dodge the assassins set on their trail. Helen Mirren and Brian Cox return from the original; new this time are Korean star Byung-hun Lee as one of those killers, Neal McDonough as another, Anthony Hopkins as a daffy scientist and Catherine Zeta-Jones as a KGB agent. The action is solid, the pace headlong, the dialogue saucily tongue-in-cheek. J.L.

A lowly crop-dusting airplane (voice by Dane Cook) cherishes an ambition to participate in an around-the-world air race, and by a combination of pluck and luck, he succeeds. Yes, it’s Turbo with planes instead of snails, but it’s also an unimaginative rehash of every other follow-your-dream movie, with little more than some stunning animation to distinguish it from all the rest. The story trudges through its predictable formula with excruciating precision, hitting every beat right on schedule. With no suspense or surprises, we have to pass the time by trying to identify the celebrity voices (which include Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, John Cleese and Cedric the Entertainer) and contemplating the inevitable Disney theme-park attraction. At least the ride will be over more quickly. J.L.

Writer-director Ryan Coogler’s first feature is an auspicious debut, portraying the last day of Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan), the Hayward man who was shot dead in an altercation with police officers for Bay Area Rapid Transit in Oakland on New Year’s Day 2009. The shooting sparked protests, both peaceful and violent.

Coogler’s movie is a protest, too, but more in sadness than anger. It’s that rarest of movies (these days, anyhow): one that’s “based on a true story” and actually has the ring of truth (some names are changed for either dramatic or legal reasons). Jordan’s performance is muted but earnest and strong, and there’s fine work from the supporting ensemble, especially Melonie Diaz as Grant’s girlfriend Sophina, Octavia Spencer as his mother, and little Ariana Neal as his 4-yearold daughter. In 2154, Earth is populated by billions of have-nots, and all the haves are living on Space Station Elysium, hogging all the nice houses, clean air and miracle medicines for themselves. On the surface, an ex-convict (Matt Damon) gets a fatal dose of radiation, and his only hope is to get to Elysium, where he can be cured. That means a desperate return to crime—but he winds up embroiled in a coup on Elysium. Writer-director Neill Blomkamp combines the gritty atmosphere of his surprise 2009 hit District 9 with a loopy Occupy Wall Street political statement that gives the movie the air of a hectoring social conscience to lend depth and pertinence to all the high-tech shoot-’em-ups that are Blomkamp’s real business at hand. Jodie Foster takes on the thankless role of a Machiavellian Elysium official. J.L.

This film is purportedly pulled from the files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, real-life “demonologists” best known for their involvement with the events that inspired the 1977 book (and subsequent 1979 and 2005 films) The Amityville Horror. That case, in which a family’s new house was possessed by demons and subsequently exorcised, has since been exposed as a hoax and the Warrens as charlatans. The Conjuring however, paints them as credible and concerned experts, and thus the film plays like an unofficial Amityville prequel, only with amplified shrieks and the now necessary Paranormal Activity-era verisimilitude. Director James Wan (Saw) delivers effective scares, showing more interest in sinewy camera moves and building a slow creep than in mindless gore, but the performances are a mixed bag, and the script repeatedly seeks refuge in the familiar. The Way Way Back

Writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, the Oscar-winning adapters of The Descendants, here co-direct their earlier script, another melancholic beach-house comedy of sympathetic middle-class white folks whose failed marriages are hard on their adolescent kids. Producers and actors from Little Miss Sunshine complete the cutely movie-ish family-dysfunction formula.

An awkward, inward 14-year-old (Liam James), drifting apart from his divorced mom (Toni Collette) and her douchey new beau (Steve Carell), endures a strained summer vacation with help from a friendly water-park manager (Sam Rockwell), who helps the kid come of age. Consequently, he does all right with the perfectly available pretty blond girl (AnnaSophia Robb) next door. The supporting cast includes Allison Janney, Amanda Peet, Rob Corddry and Maya Rudolph, all generously doing their duty to nudge both the awkward and the feel-good moments forward. But Rockwell is the highlight here, exuding great warmth, wit and just enough irony to make even the bromides seem savory. J.K.

A small-time pot dealer (Jason Sudeikis), having been strong-armed into smuggling tons of weed in from Mexico, hires a stripper (Jennifer Aniston), a teen runaway (Emma Roberts) and the dweeb next door (Will Poulter) to masquerade as a straight-arrow family and avoid suspicion at the border. The writers’ credit (Sean Anders, Steve Faber, Bob Fisher, John Morris) is studded with numerous “ands” and “&s,” indicating rewrites without collaboration, and the unevenness shows in story sags and digressions. On the plus side, the whole thing plays to Sudeikis and Aniston’s comic strengths, and they have good chemistry.

The humor is often raunchy (watch out for that spider-bite scene!), but most of the gags hit the target, and some hit the bull’seye. Rawson Marshall Thurber directs with a game (if at times unsteady) hand. J.L.

Survival Guide boasts a punk-rock résumé impressive enough to turn not-easily impressed heads. Emily Whitehurst was the lead singer of pop-punk by Aaron Carnes band Tsunami Bomb, and guitarist Jaycen McKissick once played in the local hardcore band Pipedown. Both were driving forces behind the new-wave punk band the Action Design.

Still, none of these prior musical ventures proved to be adequate preparation for Survival Guide. Not only does the band play a vastly different genre—indie electronic, with Whitehurst on keyboards and McKissick on guitars and drum machine—but the tone is entirely different, possessing a much more somber writing style.

“[Starting this band] was like starting everything over from scratch: new material, new fan base, everything,” Whitehurst explained.

Tsunami Bomb and the Action Design, in particular, played happy pop songs, while Pipedown’s music was more intense and dramatic. Now, Survival Guide’s sound seems like the work of entirely different people, which, in a way, is actually the case.

“Neither of us were the main songwriters in our [previous] bands. So, when we sat down to write, we were kind of scared, because we [had] never really done it before—full songs from start to finish in every single part,” Whitehurst said.

Instrumentation is also a major factor in Survival Guide’s significant departure. Whereas Whitehurst and McKissick’s prior bands existed as standard four- to five-member rock setups, the new outfit operates as a two-piece with a drum machine.

The decision to incorporate a drum machine mostly came from a desire to maintain that arrangement.

The pair started making music together as a side project while still playing in the Action Design. That band was on hiatus as its members tried to sort out goals; eventually,

Survival Guide became Whitehurst and McKissick’s primary focus.

“Everything is just easier with two people,” said Whitehurst, who currently lives in San Jose but travels to Sacramento regularly to practice and play with McKissick. “It’s so much easier to make decisions and write songs, make a practice schedule, [and decide] whether we’re going to play a certain show or not.”

Although the duo liked the comfort of only having two voices, they weren’t entirely sure how to get started.

“We had this drum machine we found at a garage sale and just looped it. I started playing something on the keyboard. McKissick started playing guitar. And we hit the record button,” Whitehurst said. “I think we were both questioning it the whole time. We were looking at each other, like, ‘Is this where we’re going? Is this what we’re doing right now?’”

They didn’t end up using that initial material, but, Whitehurst said, it did help them learn to relax about the process.

And, once Whitehurst and McKissick added a drum machine, they realized they needed to adapt to it, rather than trying to make the machine replicate a live drummer. This decision pushed the band’s sound into electronic territory—although they aren’t exactly synth-pop in the classic sense of the genre. Rather, their mixture of guitars and keyboards, all informed by the duo’s punk background, creates a hybrid of mellow indie rock and dance-inspired music.

Once they had enough material, they ventured out into playing live shows, which posed its own difficulties: Their first show turned out to be one of the most nerve-wracking experiences for both Whitehurst and McKissick—even though both had plenty experience.

Emily Whitehurst Survival Guide “You wouldn’t think it would have been such a big deal, but we were playing an entire new set of songs, and I was responsible for 50 percent of the musical content, as well as the vocals,” Whitehurst said.

Off-stage, the band plans to release a fulllength debut in 2014, and, as they settle into working on material, Whitehurst said they’ll carry over lessons learned on the last album. “[We’ve realized] we should start writing and not really worry about whether it seems like a final product or not,” she said. & FAMILY Don’t create the hype?: Ever heard a local musician or rapper say, “I don’t want to make another Sacramento record”? Meaning: He or she wishes not to self-fund, because more often than not, impatience wins, and the artist ends up taking the DIY route, with no promotional team connected beyond Sacramento County lines.

Unfortunately, keeping to the 916 is the downfall of every great rap record born here, and few musicians extend beyond this city’s geographical boundaries. Even fewer earn a buzz that elevates them to a status of local icon.

Last year, 22-year-old rapper Chuuwee inked a deal with Amalgam Digital, an independent record label in Boston. The rapper and label initially released a mixtape and followed up with an album, Wild Style. The announcement was not Death Grips-level huge—few

events are—but it still provided a rare moment of optimism for Sacramento hip-hop aficionados.

Chuuwee has already been lauded by many as one of the finest in the city, and this deal seemed as though we were sending our golden-child representative to speak on our behalf to the rest of the world.

Unlike Death Grips, however, controversy has not bred hype for Chuuwee. He should be extolled as a West Coast Joey Badass, with an equally fluent gift of gab. Time in the studio with Large Professor— who worked on Nas’ Illmatic debut—should have garnered him bigger notoriety. Trips to the East Coast, however, never seemed to amount to more than a few radio freestyles. Meanwhile, Chuuwee’s former collaborator Lee Bannon, who produced Chuuwee’s 2010 Hot N’ Ready record, is currently in Brooklyn working with the actual Joey Badass, appearing alongside him on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, and solidifying himself as one of the top producers for hire. This month, Chuuwee released Thrill, a free download bearing no Amalgam logo and featuring “ChiLL PiLL,” a track that airs out the rapper’s grievances with a label that’s “all in [his] wallet.”

As a consequence, much of Thrill suffers from Chuuwee’s business frustrations. Prior to its release, Amalgam chief executive Next Anyextee publicly responded to Chuuwee’s social-media complaints with commentary about his signee’s lack of professionalism and money owed to the label. Neither party looks good, but the consequences of a bridge burned will always fall harder on the artist.

It’s good for Chuuwee that his dirty laundry falls short of the diva level Death Grips occupies by its tendency toward self-destructing contracts and canceling tour dates.

And, Chuuwee also stands to benefit a great deal this month from a string of West Coast shows on which he’ll open for J.Lately and J.Good.

With that positive event on the horizon, Chuuwee needs to put his label differences and the sour indulgence of Thrill behind him. While flashes of greatness exist on Wild Style, each of his post-Hot N’ Ready releases have just felt like a mixtape.

Rekindling a project with Bannon might be out of reach now, but he should look to the formula—one producer, one emcee—as a template for instilling cohesiveness in future projects he intends to categorize as full-length LPs Long ago, Q-Tip laid out Industry Rule No. 4080: “Record company people are shady.” Heed the words always, since there’s never been a time in the history of the industry that it’s not been applicable. With those words, Q-Tip finalized hiphop’s stance on greedy A&R reps.

Still, writing songs about an industry long recognized as shady is small-minded, like a “Sacramento record,” and we already need less of those.

It has been a great summer for the rock band Filligar: Taco Bell just named them a Feed the Beat artist for 2013; it released a new record, Hexagon, in July; and the album has received rave reviews from Paste and ROCK American Songwriter. Not bad for a band that has been building up its fan base at a glacial pace for more than a decade and has made a living modernizing 1970s-era classic rock. “Robbery (Shocking Love)” from its 2010 release, The Nerve, features chunky guitar riffs and a slow-building rhythm that gets you rocking along, and “Health” shows the band’s propensity for making great jams. One of Sacramento’s native bands comes to Bows & Arrows to woo audiences with a sultry rock sound. Chuck Carrasco on guitar, Nathan Giguiere on lead vocals, Gina Salatino on bass and Jason Weisker on drums make up Some Fear None, and they have been playing their kind of rock since 2010. With moving drumbeats, constantly driving bass lines, lilting guitar and lead vocals reminiscent of Eddie Vedder, SFN has settled into a sound that can be described as melodic rock balladry—grunge lullabies ROCK that take you on a sweet, dark journey. The group also plays at Ace of Spades on Saturday night.

Jess Gowrie and Zac Brown are the two masterminds blasting audiences with their hard-rock tunes in I’m Dirty Too. They both bring tons of past musical experiences to the forefront, such as Gowrie’s involvement with the Drama and Brown’s time spent in Dusty Brown and Doombird. During performances, Gowrie beats the life out of the drums as guitarist Brown ROCK loops and distorts notes, with the two sharing lead-vocal duties. IDT’s new record, The Downhill Dive, is available now on Bandcamp. Tha Alkaholiks, a.k.a. Tha Liks, is another old-school hip-hop group that, unfortunately, HIP-HOP isn’t as well-known as it should be. Formed in the early 1990s, the trio propelled itself with lyrics influenced by hard-hitting yet fun-loving early East Coast hip-hop (think Beastie Boys, Wu-Tang Clan and A Tribe Called Quest) rapped over G-Funk-esque beats by DJ E-Swift. Emcees Tash and J-Ro tag-teamed to perfection on 1997’s “Hip Hop Drunkies”—the group’s biggest hit—which featured guest vocals by the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The group disbanded in 2006 after releasing Firewater, which featured the rhythmic and poetic “Chaos.”

Yeah, OK, Assembly isn’t exactly Golden Gate Park, and Strange Talk doesn’t have the same veritable quirk as the French trailblazers, but the band did use the same engineer to mix its latest album, Cast Away, as Phoenix and M83 did, and frontman Stephen Docker’s voice is uncannily similar to Thomas Mars’. Victor San Pedro’s got the look and—even at his young age—the style. He’s been studying guitar for about a decade and was playing classical piano at the age of 4. Be glad that he chose jazz over blues, because the world JAZZ needs more young jazz musicians.

He’s received a number of awards, including placing fourth as Outstanding Soloist at the 2013 Next Generation Jazz Festival (part of the Monterey Jazz Festival). The Rio Americano High School alum received similar accolades from the Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival and Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival in New York. Puffin’ in public I saw your article with the hemp fest calendar dates. I’ve never been to one, partly because of my old-fashioned paranoia about smoking weed in public. Are police hassles or arrests made during these events? Are we required to always carry the doctor’s recommendation?

—Canna-Craig Here’s the thing about hemp festivals: They rely on safety in numbers. Back in the early days of the Seattle Hempfest (1991 or so), the cops would show up early EALUM B and hassle a few folks, then fade into the background IO A G N by as the park grew more crowded. If 20,000 people are in a park smoking weed, it’s hard for 12 or so police officers to arrest anyone. Now that more than 100,000 a s k420 @ n ewsreview.c om people show up for the Seattle Hempfest, the cops won’t bother you, unless you do something stupid, like blow smoke in a cop’s face (I’ve seen it happen), or try to rob a vendor.

In California, most of the festivals and expos have a medical-cannabis section. You have to present your letter of recommendation and ID to enter. At the San Francisco High Times Medical Cannabis Cup this past June, I think I saw two police officers. They walked through the patients’ section, smiling and taking pictures with various festival The cops won’t attendees.

One was an altercation between a drunk and a tweaker, which was quickly broken up by all the friendly stoners, and the other was between a drunk and a drunk, which was also broken up by all the peaceful potheads in the vicinity. Is California ever going to have comprehensive, statewide medical-cannabis regulation?

—Bill Who knows? I suppose they are working on it. Senate Bill 439, which would turn the 2008 attorney general’s medicalmarijuana guidelines (http://tinyurl.com/medmarcalif) into law, has a good chance at passing.

S.B. 439 would make medical-cannabis dispensaries legal, as long as they are run as a nonprofit. That’s really the best part. Other than that, the bill is nothing special or groundbreaking, which is probably why it stands a good chance of passing. You’d think that a state with a supermajority of Democrats—the Democrats that just sent a letter to the Obama administration asking it to respect Colorado and Washington’s marijuana laws—would be able to pass a more significant law than the one currently on the table. “All my life, my heart has yearned for a thing I cannot name.” So said French writer André Breton. I suspect that many of us feel the same way, which is kind of depressing. But the good news for you, Sagittarius, is that there will be times in the coming months when you will get as close to naming that mysterious thing as you have ever gotten. On more than a few occasions, you may be able to get a clear glimpse of its true nature. Now and then, you might even be fully united with it. One of those moments could come soon.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The

Paris Review interviewed novelist William Gass. “If someone asks me, ‘Why do you write?’,” he said, “I can reply by pointing out that it is a very dumb question. Nevertheless, there is an answer. I write because I hate. A lot. Hard.” In other words, his primary motivations for expressing himself creatively were loathing, malice and hostility. I beg you not to use him as your role model, Capricorn. Not now. Not ever. But especially now. It is essential to your long-term health and wealth that you not be driven by hate in the coming weeks. Just the opposite, in fact: The more you are driven by love and generosity, the better chance you will have of launching a lucky streak that will last quite a while.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “Until

we have seen someone’s darkness, we don’t really know who they are,” said author Marianne Williamson. “Until we have forgiven someone’s darkness, we don’t really know what love is.” Your assignment, Aquarius, is to seek out the deepest possible understanding of these truths.

To do that, you will have to identify the unripe, shadowy qualities of the people who are most important to you. And then, you will have to find it in your smart heart to love them for their unripe, shadowy qualities almost as much as you do for their shiny, beautiful qualities.

Fresh mix Bartender Brian Bothwell started his career in 1994 as a barback at Chevys on the river, and since then, he’s hustled behind just about every notable counter on the grid. Earlier this year, he won the St. Patrick’s Day Speed and Cocktail competition at The Golden Bear. The prize? Bothwell got to introduce the Shamrock Punk to palates everywhere. The frothy creation includes Jameson whiskey, Chartreuse, pureed avocado, prosecco and grapefruit. “No one ever did avocado before,” Bothwell said. Discriminating drinkers can now find him mixing up vibrant, seasonal concoctions at Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co. (1630 S Street). Talking over a summery Angie (Plymouth Gin, fresh lemon juice, soda water, red Italian liqueur, with fresh bits of lemon, cucumber and cilantro) and flavorful Plum Foolery (bourbon, lemon juice and a slow-blended puree of homegrown plums, among other tasty ingedients), Bothwell shared some secrets of bartending—including what he’s just itching to try next. Hope everyone likes dissolving balls.

What got you into bartending?

I liked the social aspect of what I saw guys behind the bar doing. I also liked how it was technical as far as hand-eye coordination [goes]. I liked that it was physical. The bar I started in was a really busy bar, and those guys hustled back and forth the whole time. They never stopped; their hands never stopped, their bodies never stopped moving. And so, I thought it would be a fun way to make money, where you could still make a game of it. It was almost like a sport. |

How long did you bartend before you felt like you knew what you were doing?

I had a guy that was a really seasoned, great bartender, and he would come in and watch me, and I was nervous. He told me one time, “After five years, you can consider yourself a pro.” And I think he’s right. I think it takes at least five years to not just gain cocktail knowledge, but to gain confidence and poise and fully be able to multitask and incorporate all your elements of service.

What was hardest about the job early on?

There’s two things: The first is that in a busy bar, it never stops, so you’re constantly struggling to keep up and not fall behind.

Because the bar will not stop. It’s the basic things that you learn barbacking, which is the most crucial thing you can ever do. The most crucial thing about being a good bartender is being a good barback, and having a knowledge of how to keep your bar afloat—the stocking, the pacing, the cleanliness.

Are you drawn to fresh ingredients?

Oh, absolutely. Living in California, I don’t see how you can’t be. I personally love to garden, so it’s just right there in my backyard.

Is that commitment to seasonal produce common?

I think that it’s more common now than it used to be. For me, especially with the chefs that I worked with and the roommates I have and the other bartenders around town, everyone’s really into the farm-to-fork, local, sustainable movement.

It’s really cool right now.

Are there things you haven’t gotten to do yet that you want to try?

Yes. Just a style of making drinks.

With stuff like [gastronomy], you can incorporate really cool liquors and change the molecular make of them. So, instead of something being liquid, you can put it in a gelatinous form. Let’s say you take a sip of a cocktail, and there’s this little ball on a spoon, and you put the ball in your mouth, and it’s actually liquor. When the temperature of your mouth mixes with the ball, it’s going to dissolve, and you get this burst of flavors.

That’s crazy.

I would like to do stuff like that. I would like to explore the possibilities of incorporating fresh fruit that’s infused with liquor into ice cubes. For instance, something I’ve been thinking about is infusing a kumquat with liquor, freezing it and then cutting it into ice cubes. So, as you make your cocktail, that’s ice that you would use. [As it] melts, the flavor expands from inside of the ice cubes out. I’ve wanted to play with that and see where that takes me. I have no idea where it would end, but I just want to see what would happen, what it inspires. It’d be cool if it all works out.

What’s your afterwork cocktail?

I usually like to get really fancy and have a can of Budweiser and a shot of Jameson.

Wow. I do like Boulevardier. Depending on what bar I’m at, I will order a Boulevardier with rye whiskey and Aperol. But typically, I just like a beer and a shot. Ω
