On a roll Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

In this week’s issue, you’ll find our annual Artown Guide, which, as always, features coverage of Rollin’ on the River, the summer concert series presented by the RN&R each Friday in July. Covering this series has always been a bit of a pain for us here on the editorial side of the newspaper. As journalists, we find it distasteful to hype our own shit. We don’t like to write about events sponsored by the advertising side of the paper. It just seems tacky, and gross, and conflicted.

It was especially difficult a few years ago, when the bands were mediocre cover bands or faddish world music acts. That’s part of why we editors—me, in particular—have taken a more active role booking the series over the last couple of years. We’ve also attempted to rebrand it as a celebration of local music. The complaint we’ve heard the most about Artown over the years is that there hasn’t been enough spotlight thrown on the artists— of all disciplines—who actually live and work here in the Truckee Meadows. So this approach to Rollin’ on the River is a response to that. We live in a great town, with a beautiful river and a talented community—let’s celebrate that.

That approach also led to the creation of Still Rollin’ this summer, a late-night concert series that features some of the best local music, and is an accurate presentation of what live music in this town is all about. These concerts follow the Rollin’ concerts each Friday and will be a blast. For this series, we’re really proud to partner with Shea’s Tavern, a crucial nexus of old Reno resistance to the steamroller of gentrification.

Lots of good music, and good times. Hope to see you there.

Wild horses in the sun!

I’m a 69 year old man who has hunted twice in his life and killed both a buck deer and an antelope. I’ve not hunted since, (my choice), even though we ate the meat. That was almost 40 years ago. I have brothers and friends who still hunt, and it does not bother me. I am a gun owner and will not hesitate to do whatever is necessary to protect my family and friends.

Wild horses and domestic animals like dogs and cats, sometimes, are in the wrong place at the wrong time and some people who deem them useless and worthless, treat them with extreme cruelty, sometimes killing them, sometimes crippling them, and sometimes they get away only to die after tremendous pain and suffering.

It is against Nevada law to hunt or kill wild horses. Why, then, do BLM (Bureau of Land Management) big shots say it’s okay to use helicopters, motorcycles, and other vehicles to round up and capture these same wild horses and sell them for slaughter for human and or pet food.

When did it change?

It’s difficult to think of the baby boomers as young anymore, but they were once. And they may have been the best educated in history—more so than today’s students.

We argue this point because today’s students tend to be on an assembly line, plowing their way through school with a goal but little notion of education for its own sake.

The boomers were lucky. There were two acts of Congress that made them lucky.

One was called the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944. It was better known as the GI Bill. When servicepeople came home from World War One, they were promised a bonus that would be paid in 1945. But when World War Two servicepeople came home, they were given the GI Bill, which was payable much sooner.

For those who had already been to school, it provided mortgage and loan aid, but for the rest, it provided tuition and living expenses for high school, college or technical schools. Hundreds of thousands of veterans went back to school. It wasn’t wildly generous—many vets talk of how they ate a lot of spaghetti and hot dogs—but students were grateful for it. The sense of education as a silver bullet was very strong among soldiers and sailors who had matured during the war years. And it was a view they communicated to their children—the baby boomers.

The second piece of legislation was the National Defense Education Act. It was enacted during the boom, in 1958, and every boomer over about fifth grade knew of the NDEA. In 1957, the Soviet Union had sent up a satellite that orbited Earth. During a time of intense cold war competition, it was a shock and a wake-up call for

U.S. officials. The NDEA poured money into science, mathematics and foreign languages, into student loans and fellowships and overseas studies. No baby boomer doubted that the United States valued education.

We’re not so sure that’s true, anymore. The lassitude about schooling of students we encounter is striking.

Maybe it started when parents stopped taking the side of teachers when a child came home and reported a dispute, sending a parent defensively steaming into school demanding to know why “my kid” is being abused instead of first hearing the other side.

Maybe it started when Republicans learned they could score points attacking teachers unions, forgetting that those unions are full of fine educators who are decent people, mostly parents and breadwinners like the rest of us, who do their jobs well, notwithstanding the occasional exceptions.

Maybe it started when state universities forgot their special role and started trying to compete with Notre Dame and Stanford, or when those same state universities started sending graduates into the world with lifelong debt.

Maybe it started when we stopped trusting government—and government stopped being trustworthy.

Maybe it started when business began treating learning and knowledge as manipulable tools (a bestselling book today is subtitled The Campaign Against Established Knowledge and Why it Matters).

We don’t know. We just know that, for a precious time, a short decade or two, ours was a country filled with two generations who thought teachers hung the moon, who believed that with education everything was possible. Ω

A sea change in the Nevada Senate?

Something extraordinary happened in the closing hours of Nevada’s legislative session. A champion stepped forward on behalf of all the women in the building, legislators, staff, lobbyists and interns alike.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Ford stood on the Senate floor and formally admonished Democratic Senator Mark Manendo for conduct unfitting a senator, entering his comments into the legislative record for anyone and everyone to review in the years to come. It was a remarkable public rebuke of an elected official by a leader of the same party and a resounding show of support for the 30 women who have come forward so far to tell an investigator about Manendo’s transgressions over the past 22 years.

Manendo’s proclivities to harass and insult women who spurned him were not unknown to most people involved in the Legislature. Lobbyists routinely instructed their young female associates to avoid being alone with the senator, and interns were told to keep a safe distance from him during

social events. Manendo had been investigated for sexual harassment multiple times, most notably in 2003 and 2009 when serious complaints were filed. He was admonished privately by numerous Democratic leaders over the years and even had a coveted committee chairmanship taken away from him, but it didn’t matter. He continually denied responsibility and never seemed to learn his lesson.

It’s not as if the problem was completely ignored, and yet it felt that way to many women as he got bolder and meaner to those who stood up to him.

Once a seasoned female lobbyist was so angry over his treatment of her young intern, she chased him down the hall to confront him, but he avoided her wrath by quickly escaping to the Senate floor where she couldn’t follow. Another year, a group of female legislators and lobbyists joined forces to warn leadership they would publicly expose his harassing behavior if it continued, but nothing ever came of it except a doubling down of revenge from

the senator in the form of “no” votes on legislators’ personal bills and a refusal to meet with the lobbyists.

And still the behavior continued.

But when multiple complaints were filed with the Senate majority leader in 2017, he took more aggressive action, hiring an investigator and expanding the scope when dozens of women came forward to recount their experiences with Manendo over the years, establishing a disgraceful pattern of behavior. Towards the end of the session Ford forced Manendo to resign his treasured chairmanship of the Transportation Committee and then took to the Senate floor to publicly rebuke him on the last day of the session, stating more action would be forthcoming once the investigation is complete. Ford also pushed through a change to ethics rules in the Legislature’s waning hours to make it easier for anyone to file a harassment complaint.

Ford justified his unprecedented actions by stating Manendo had clearly

“developed a reputation of harassing and intimidating young women at the Legislature and engaging in conduct that makes them uncomfortable” and then reassured the women who had come forward that they had done the right thing.

“None of us are beyond reproach, and we must not tolerate sex-based, genderbased or any other type of harassment by members of the Senate. In that regard, no person, whether a legislator, a lobbyist, a member of the staff, intern or anyone else is placed in a position where someone inappropriately exerts control in a way that intimidates, harasses or makes them uncomfortable.”

It was an astonishing moment in legislative history, but in a session that approved the Equal Rights Amendment and protected women’s health care, the harassment and intimidation could not be allowed to continue. Although long overdue, Ford’s actions are definitely a case of better late than never. Ω

A cold civil war?

The 2017 Nevada Legislature approved the commercial cultivation of hemp. We are the first state to pass a law allowing commercial hemp cultivation. The federal government has prohibited the cultivation of hemp in the United States. If you buy a hemp dress in a boutique, the fiber was grown outside the country.

Hemp is cannabis but is not psychoactive. The buds of the hemp plant are, at best, worse than ditch weed. Instead, hemp is prized for the fiber taken from the long stalks, which are strong and water resistant. Hemp, as any fan of Jack Herer can tell you, has been used for rope, clothes, paper, upholstery and countless other industrial and home uses for thousands of years.

The U.S. is on the verge of civil war, or least a civil cold war. A deranged leftist living in a van by the river shot U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise while he practiced for a charity congressional baseball game, and if not for brave security may have killed many more Republicans. The

government-controlled corporate media pretended a new Era of Good Feeling was upon us when the ball game was played. It didn’t last a week.

Having lost the election they were overwhelmingly picked to win, the Democrats are willing to risk war with a nuclear superpower to discredit the winner. They want to investigate their way back to power. The Washington Imperium and its satellites have hurled invectives at the president of a country who has the power to end civilization and maybe even life on Earth in a nuclear Armageddon. He was also elected by his people more than once, and he has largely kept his promise to restore to his people a sense of pride and patriotism missing since the implosion of the Soviet Union. He does not use nasty words against our politicians, but instead calls us “partners,” “friends” and “colleagues.”

Vladimir Putin. They even watched Dr. Strangelove together. The Russians say their diplomacy is designed to make enemies neutrals, neutrals friends, and friends allies. Our elite spies interpret this to mean Russians are genetically manipulative. Stephen Colbert never watched the interviews, but condemned Stone for his attempt to humanize someone the left prefers remain a caricature of evil.

Over 70 percent of Americans want an end to foreign wars, but always it seems there has to be a deadly enemy, a reason for “leadership” to maintain “international norms.” Washington continues to find reasons for wars and rumors of wars. The Congressional approval rating hovers around 20 percent.

If Nevada can simply defy the federal government and legalize hemp, what else could states do? President Eisenhower sent the 101 Airborne to desegregate the schools in Little Rock, but could something like that happen again? The governor of Arkansas and the American

people respected federal authority because Eisenhower was a hero of the war against fascism and had the moral authority to enforce the Constitution.

Just what moral authority does the federal leviathan have now? The people despised medical marijuana raids under President Obama in California. Congress passed the Rohrabarker-Farr amendment that prevents any more federal raids against medical marijuana dispensaries operating under state law. This month Attorney General Jeff Sessions sent a letter to Congress asking permission to do medical pot raids again, but now there is a bipartisan marijuana lobby in Congress. I suspect they will tell Jeff to go pound sand.

What can the states accomplish if they decide to bypass the federal government altogether, not to discriminate, but to liberate? I expect we will see some answers to that question soon. Ω

Rush to judgment Like many illicit drugs, hallucinogens became illegal in Nevada mostly as a result of ignorance (see cover story, page 11).

During a special session of the Nevada Legislature in 1966, Gov. Grant Sawyer on May 24 expanded the call of the session to include legislation dealing with hallucinogens.

The same day the Reno Evening Gazette—one of the two forerunners of the Reno Gazette-Journal—ran an editorial calling for ending the special session, and legislators themselves were also talking about going home.

“But the ... new item—a proposed law banning LSD and ‘other hallucinatory drugs’ could keep the legislation in session until next week … Law enforcement officials in Reno and Las Vegas supported inclusion of anti-LSD legislation because increased usage in the state is creating a police problem,” reported the Nevada State Journal.

The main police problem seemed to be that police could not make arrests.

As journalism has normally done since Virginia City and San Francisco gave the nation its first drug prohibition laws, the Journal reported on police reaction but did not talk to scientists or health care professionals about the issue. But reporters weren’t alone. With little research and less committee testimony, a measure was rushed through the legislative process, and, on May 30, both Sawyer and California Gov. Pat Brown signed the nation’s first state hallucinogen prohibition measures.

The speed was something of a surprise. In 1965, state legislators had tried to outlaw peyote and ran into a political buzzsaw—religious groups that used it in their ceremonies.

Lawmakers backed off fast. They might have been expected to be more cautious this time, but they were not.

As it happened, on the same day Sawyer issued his expanded special session call, U.S. Sen. Robert Kennedy spoke on the matter at the opening of a congressional hearing. He was concerned about the sudden arrival of hallucinogens on the scene, but did not discount the role they could have in medicine.

“Suddenly, almost overnight, irresponsible and unsupervised use of LSD for non-scientific, non-medical purposes has risen markedly.” he said. “Such use carries with it grave dangers, and as LSD has become a problem, the possibility has arisen that public reaction will discourage and dry up legitimate research into any therapeutic use of LSD.” Though even in May of 1966 it was plain that hallucinogens were a coming thing and that lawmakers needed to bring themselves up to speed. There is little evidence they did so. Instead, they reacted to episodic developments— particularly the 1967 release of a scientific paper by noted geneticist Maimon Cohen that found broken chromosomes in a 57-year-old man who had ingested LSD, suggesting that birth defects might follow use of the drug.

Journalism ran with the story with its normal concern for nuance and restraint, and soon legislators across the nation were passing more bans. It later turned out that the 57-yearold man had also ingested Thorazine and Librium, which do cause chromosome damage, but that bit of information never made it onto the front pages. And no generation of birth defect-afflicted children followed the hallucinogen use of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Meanwhile, research at the federal level unfolded pretty much as Kennedy predicted. The Food and Drug Administration curbed research on hallucinogens except by U.S. intelligence agencies. Pennsylvania medical ethicist Jonathan Moreno recently wrote in Psychology Today, “It’s high time to destigmatize psychedelics as objects of legitimate research for the good they can do.”

At the Nevada Legislature, lobbyists and reporters schmoozed while legislators met behind closed doors in the last few days of the session.

Workers stiffed Labor has bipartisan grudges one group came out of the 2017 Nevada Legislature unhappy—working people.

“Not unhappy,” said one lobbyist.

“They’re furious.”

OK, furious. And not just with Republicans.

“The Democrats kept dropping the ball,” said a Republican legislator. If he was taking some partisan satisfaction from the situation, he shouldn’t have. GOP Gov. Brian Sandoval and Republican Senate floor leader Michael Roberson are regarded as simply antilabor. Roberson is warming up for a run for higher office.

Republicans like to tell themselves that labor unions don’t speak for real working people, and while it’s very true that private sector union membership has dropped into single digit percentages, that doesn’t mean that unions’ issues don’t resonate with non-union workers.

There is, however, a difference between labor’s unhappiness with the two parties. It considers the Democrats incompetent. It considers the Republicans malevolent.

Sparks Tribune columnist Andrew Barbano, who has many labor union sources, wrote last week, “Legislative Democrats threw their ATM under the bus in the 2017 Nevada legislative session. … Democratic leaders chirp about victories but mutter a ‘therethere’ pat on the head to workers who got less than nothing.”

Barbano even suggests Nevada Democrats could face Democratic primary challenges if they don’t mend fences fast.

No one in labor is courting a public breach with the Democrats, but spokespeople privately make their distress clear. One labor leader said the Democrats managed considerably more deft maneuvers on behalf of other party constituencies than for labor.

“Women got what they wanted,” he said. “So did the LBGT community. But our bills were put on an assembly line.”

What he meant by that was that with bills dealing with some constituencies, the Democrats gamed timing and tactics, often forcing Republicans or the governor to deal with them,

backing Republicans off or avoiding vetoes. For instance, late in the legislative session, the Democrats plucked the content out of a vetoed bill dealing with insulin and dropped it into another bill with a slight change, then sent it off to Sandoval a second time. This time he signed it.

But when labor complained about their bills, expecting party leaders to hold some bills for the closing days when they could be negotiated, the Democrats instead sent them straight to the governor, who vetoed them. Where, asked the unions, was the cleverness Democrats showed on other issues?

“They gave him [Sandoval] a reason to vote with them, but not on our bills,” said that same labor leader.

Sandoval has been freer with his veto than any other Nevada governor except his immediate predecessor, Jim Gibbons. But where Gibbons used the veto to stop bills he had neglected to watch during the session, Sandoval uses it to “micromanage,” as one legislative staffer described it.

“This is an unusual use for the veto,” she said.

Roberson’s alleged role is that he held Sandoval to promised vetoes of nearly all labor measures. New research on psychedelics suggests they are helpful in treating numerous afflictions

hen Eric Johnson puts a tab of LSD on his tongue or sips tea brewed with psychedelic mushrooms, the pain in his muscles is replaced by a warm, honeylike feeling and his mind finally comes to rest.

“It’s pure relief,” he said.

Johnson, 50, grew up in Reno. Now he lives alone in a small apartment in Citrus Heights, amid the suburban sprawl northeast of Sacramento. He doesn’t get out much. He can drive, but walking even modest distances is difficult because of a condition that affects his appendages most severely. His feet, like his hands, are weak and atrophied. His pinkies and big toes are useless. Gripping forks and coffee mugs can be troublesome, as can chewing and swallowing food. At times, he is too fatigued to hold his head up.

He was born with hereditary motor-sensory neuropathy, also known as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disorder, an incurable condition that damages neural tissue.

“You have to continuously say goodbye to abilities,” he said. “I’m getting better at some things, but it’s a progressive disease.”

The slow deterioration of his dexterity has resulted in a long-term grieving process, he said. Periodically throughout his adult life, Johnson has used psychedelic drugs for physical, mental and spiritual release.

A growing number of people are taking psychedelics for healing. Advocates say drugs like LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, DMT, ayahuasca and ketamine provide a kaleidoscopic array of potential applications, from treating eating disorders to helping terminal cancer patients find peace.

Most scientific research in the field is focused on the potential of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy—more or less traditional, sit-down therapy with one or two psychiatrists, except the patient is tripping and sessions can last up to eight hours. Test results are preliminary and sample sizes are small, but the approach looks promising for treating severe depression, anxiety, PTSD and substanceabuse disorders. All of these conditions are often rooted in traumatic experiences.

Scientists still don’t know how, exactly, psychedelics help people process trauma, said Brad Burge, director of communications for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, a nonprofit organization based in Santa Cruz that is conducting clinical trials of psychotherapy assisted by MDMA. “We do know there’s something deeper going on,” he said.

“Psychedelics are not just treating symptoms. They are helping people reconfigure their emotional relationship to their trauma.”

If psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy were made legal and accessible—it’s neither—Johnson said he would be among the first to sign up for a session. As an experienced user—and someone exposed to severe childhood trauma—he believes the potential for healing and transformation is real.

“I know if I could accurately describe how brilliantly [psychedelics] make me feel, nobody would ever deny them from me,” he said.

Ps y c hedeli c s t a rs For three days in April, more than 3,000 people attended the Psychedelic Science Conference, hosted by MAPS in downtown Oakland.

The conference was like a cross between TEDx and Burning Man: The Oakland Marriott City Center was overtaken by policymakers, advocacy groups, academics in tweed jackets, flower children, fairy-people on stilts and hippies who smelled righteously of weed and body odor.

All the while, in multiple conference rooms, dozens of scientists, psychologists and other medical professionals expounded on the various health benefits of ingesting psychedelics.

It was apparent that psychedelic enthusiasts have formed a cultural subgroup complete with its own historic figures and celebrities. In one of the hotel’s elevators, a young woman, seemingly star-struck, asked a psychiatrist for an autograph. He declined.

Psychedelics are in the public eye more than ever.

Earlier this year, the idea of microdosing was popularized by novelist, essayist and activist Ayelet Waldman’s topselling memoir, A Really Good Day: How Microdosing Made a Mega Difference in My Mood, My Marriage, and My Life. Waldman, who lives with bipolar II disorder, describes taking miniscule amounts of LSD to manage her volatile moods and improve her relationships with her husband and son.

In the working world, microdosing has become a trendy practice among Silicon Valley techies and creative professionals.

“There’s a lot of research that shows psychedelics can help otherwise normal, healthy people lead more meaningful and productive lives,” said Jag Davies, a spokesman for the Drug Policy Alliance, a national organization that advocates for decriminalizing drugs and moving toward a health-based approach.

“It helps enhance creativity and problem-solving,” he said. “People are using psychedelics not to drop out of, but to engage with, mainstream society.”

into the Past Using hallucinogens to open the mind to broader vistas is an ancient practice. For thousands of years, indigenous peoples all over the world have used hallucinogenic plants, fungi and animals—like poisonous toads—in healing rituals and spiritual rites of passage.

Starting in the early 1950s, early researchers such as Timothy Leary and Humphry Osmond began looking at LSD for a variety of purposes, including treating alcoholism. (Osmond coined the term “psychedelic,” which means “mindmanifesting.”) By 1970, however, psychedelics had become synonymous with the hippie counterculture movement, prompting Richard Nixon to sign the Controlled Substances Act and put most psychedelics on Schedule I: outlawed drugs, alongside heroin and cannabis. LSD research ground to a halt. (An account of how hallucinogens became illegal in Nevada can be read in Upfront, page 8.)

The renaissance of psychedelic science started a little more than a decade ago, as researchers started focusing on psilocybin, a compound found in more than 200 types of psychedelic mushrooms. Like LSD, psilocybin is listed as a Schedule I drug, but is considered less controversial to study. Researchers must get a special license from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency to do so.

In 2006, Roland Griffiths, a professor of neuroscience and psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University, published a landmark article titled “Psilocybin Can Occasion Mystical-Type Experiences Having Substantial and Sustained Personal Meaning and

Spiritual Significance.” Of 36 volunteers who participated in the double-blind study, half were given a pill containing psilocybin and half were given an active placebo. More than two-thirds of the participants who took the psychedelic ranked the ensuing trips to be among the most spiritually significant experiences of their lives.

“When administered under supportive conditions, psilocybin occasioned experiences similar to spontaneously occurring mystical experiences,” Griffiths concluded.

Now there’s a whole field of research focused on peak mystical experiences. Leor Roseman is a Ph.D. student of neuroscience at the Beckley/Imperial Research Program in London. During the Psychedelic Science Conference, he presented the results of his research on fMRI brain-imaging before and after patients underwent psilocybin-assisted therapy for depression.

Roseman monitored patients who were given 10 milligram and 25 milligram doses of psilocybin during therapy sessions separated by one week. He found that strong trips and low levels of anxiety predicted positive clinical outcomes. In those cases, patients reported alleviated symptoms of depression several months after their last treatment.

How is it that just two doses can influence long-lasting changes in thought patterns and behaviors? Again, researchers aren’t sure. A working theory is that acute psychedelic experiences make changes to the brain’s functional connectivity, linking previously disconnected areas and allowing it to “become more entropic, more flexible,” Roseman said. That may allow rigid, treatment-resistant conditions to loosen and break free.

Here is where science and spirituality intersect and the mystery goes deeper. Patients often report losing their sense of self during peak mystical experiences, Roseman said. The ego dissolves, and patients’ sense of individuality is replaced by “oneness” with the universe.

By way of example, conference speaker David Lukoff—a licensed psychologist and professor at Sofia University in Palo Alto—described his first LSD trip, which he took more than 30 years ago at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. As he watched the waves roll in, hypnotized, he was overcome by a sense of connection to everything. “The ocean’s is me; I am the ocean; the waves are me,” Lukoff recalled thinking. “I experienced past, present and future as unity.”

To put it nonscientifically: The patient’s mind is blown, sense of self is shattered and it all comes back together as a stronger whole—recalibrated.

“This relates to Eastern philosophies,” Roseman said, “that losing oneself momentarily allows for a kind of stronger self.”

Fa c i ng F ea rs Johnson took mushrooms for the first time during a Crosby, Stills & Nash concert in 1983, when he was 16 years old. It was a blast. Colors were more vivid; the air smelled sweeter; the music became transcendent. The experience led to experiments with LSD and Pink Floyd, to equally dazzling effect.

“It was just incredible, the way they made me feel,” he said.

“Whenever I heard mushrooms or LSD was around, I wanted to get some because they made me feel so good.”

At the time, they provided a much-needed respite, he said.

Johnson’s childhood in Reno had been difficult. As his body grew, his musculature did not develop accordingly, and he became clumsy. He couldn’t keep up with the kids who played sports, rode bicycles and went hunting and fishing, and his physical limitations made him vulnerable to bullying—and more damaging abuse. In the summer of 1974, when he was 7 years old, Johnson was raped multiple times by a 15-year-old boy in his neighborhood, he said.

“Unfortunately, when you’re in my position, what you are is prey,” he said.

Johnson’s experiences have reverberated throughout his adulthood, manifesting later as anxiety and depression and interweaving with his chronic pain.

He describes two kinds of pain—an ache in his bones and another sensation “that feels like being crushed inward from all directions.” To manage both, he wears a patch on his shoulder that time-releases fentanyl, a strong opioid painkiller, and he takes 64 milligram doses of ketamine twice a day. Ketamine is commonly used for sedation and treating chronic pain, and it also has strong psychedelic effects that make it a sought-after recreational drug.

Johnson doesn’t find ketamine to be as beneficial—or as fun—as LSD or psylocybin, but he doesn’t seek out those drugs because they’re illegal.

“I’m afraid of the cops,” he said.

For his psychological distress, he’s tried traditional treatments. He’s seen a psychotherapist for years, and he’s been on and off various antidepressant medications, otherwise known as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).

The drugs have been effective at times, he said, but they have limitations.

“Prozac, for example, can put you in a place where you’re psychologically muted,” he said. “It’s great not to experience the real lows, but it also keeps you from experiencing the super-highs. It narrows the range of psychological states you might be in.”

While patients on SSRIs often report a general emotional blunting, it’s just the opposite with psilocybin, Roseman said.

In his research, a day after patients took mushrooms—in the “afterglow” period—brain scans showed a notable increase of sensitivity in the amygdala, the brain’s emotional processor, which suggested that patients were experiencing and tolerating a wider range of emotions.

As MDMA is an entirely different compound, the amygdala’s response to it is different, Burge said, but it does share an important quality with psilocybin.

“They both encourage a greater awareness on the part of the patient,” he said. “For example, one of the hallmarks of PTSD is that people try to repress the memory; the memory is something they are unable to face because it causes such fear activation. In the context of psychedelic-assisted therapy, people can talk about their difficult memories of sexual assault, military battles or natural disasters, or whatever event the trauma is based in.

“They can face their fear more directly.”

Roseman offered a quote from a patient: “I see … my dad abusing me again—something that has flashed into my head now and again ever since it happened— but rather than pushing the image to one side and avoiding the situation, I look him in the eyes and move through the discomfort and fear. … With my demons fully revealed and presented to me, having looked my deepest fears directly in the eye, I enter a state where I feel completely elated, at peace, absolutely euphoric—the most relaxed and content I have ever been.”

Push For P olicy Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy remains inaccessible to the general public, but putting it into clinical practice may not be so far out. Thanks to private donors and an enormously successful crowdfunding campaign, MAPS is entering the final phase of a roughly $25 million plan to make MDMA a federally approved prescription medicine by 2021.

In June, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to approve the protocol for MAPS’ last series of clinical trials, which will involve more than 200 patients at 12 sites around

North America. Interestingly, the FDA does not require the researchers to determine how psychedelics actually work before giving them the OK, Burge said.

“For approval, the FDA doesn’t need to know anything about mechanism of action,” he said. “They only need to know that a treatment works and that it’s relatively safe, that the ratio of benefit-to-risk is sufficient.”

Davies, the spokesman for the Drug Policy Alliance, said

the future of psychedelic therapy depends on public opinion and political will. Though attitudes are shifting, polls show the public currently favors legal access to hallucinogens only slightly more than methamphetamine.

“There are these myths, these vestiges of the drug war, that if you take a hit of acid, you’re going to go crazy,” he said.

“The evidence does not bear that out.”

Davies pointed to a meta-analysis conducted by the Norwegian University of Science. After combing data on more than 130,000 Americans who participated in the 20012004 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the study’s authors concluded that lifetime use of LSD, mushrooms, mescaline or peyote was not associated with an increased risk of developing mental health problems. Other big data studies have found just the opposite.

This is not a consensus. The National Institutes on Drug Abuse, for instance, says that “little is known about the longterms effects of hallucinogens” and warns of rare cases of drug-induced psychosis and flashbacks.

Even if the treatment is approved, Davies said, it will remain inaccessible to most people.

“With the way everything is going with health care,” he said, “it’s unlikely that health insurance is going to cover psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.”

Burge agreed that the health care landscape could be much different in four or five years, but said MAPS is already considering strategies for getting insurance companies to cover the treatment. One point in their favor is that, in the long run, psychedelics would be less expensive than antidepressants.

“With MDMA-assisted psychotherapy, you’re looking at just a couple of sessions, and then you don’t need the treatment anymore,” he said. “So, insurance companies might prefer to pay for that rather than pay for ongoing [SSRI] treatment.”

Learning from the trip Psychedelic therapy is not a miraculous cure-all, Burge emphasized. If patients have a seemingly life-changing epiphany during a session, it’s still up to them to put it into practice.

“Oftentimes, the participants in the studies say the therapy itself did immediately help reduce symptoms, but a lot of the work came after that,” he said. “Which is to say, the drug is not doing the work for people. Rather, it’s providing a window for people to make changes.”

Johnson knows healing isn’t found only in a substance.

Lately, he’s been trying to retain dexterity by practicing yoga, and he’s tapered off his regimen of antidepressants.

At the encouragement of his psychotherapist, he recently went to a meeting of the Psychedelic Club of Sacramento.

It was his first social outing in some time.

Reflecting on his experiences in the psychedelic state, Johnson said they provided different perspectives on his condition, his trauma and the traditional life markers he felt he was missing out on—getting married, having children, buying a house and pursuing a career.

“Everything opens up and flows out,” he said. “You make connections and see things in a way that you might not otherwise. You have experiences that change your outlook in a positive way.”

He doesn’t know when he’ll take his next psychedelic trip, but he knows what to expect when the occasion arises, he said: “When pain is replaced by a sweet, candylike feeling in your muscles and you get that relief—that absolute relief—you want more of that.” Ω

s people are gearing up for Artown, preparations for the Reno Fashion Show are also in full swing.

According to organizers, the show is bigger than ever this year with 20 local designers sending models down the runway to showcase their creativity.

“We have children, women, men and even people over the age of 50 taking part in the show,” Brian Aranda, the executive producer of the fashion show, said.

He hopes attendance will exceed last year’s turnout of 1,200 people.

Behind the scenes When preparations for the show began with a casting call in May, designers, make-up artists and producers gathered to see more than 400 prospective models line up for auditions.

“We want models who are proud to be part of the show,” Aranda said to the hopefuls who’d come to try out.

Reno Fashion show

The show is being choreographed by Starr Berumen, 17, who has been modeling since age 13. It will be Berumen’s fifth time modeling in the show and her second time as a choreographer.

“We are trying to switch it up a little bit from last year,” she said. “We are making the runway a little bit longer and also get them to make turns in the middle.”

The runway will be 90 feet long this year, laid out like most any fashion week, with theater-style seating for 1,200 people.

“We have done the show in the Grand Sierra’s Grand Theatre before, but we prefer a traditional runway, as it is large and not so intimate,” Aranda said. “You can be in the high nosebleed seats and not be able to see the fashion at all.”

This year, the sets are to be designed by Carol Lee Kim and her daughter Noelle.

The show will also feature an opening act by Karen Burns Productions called “Decades of Fashion,” during which Karen Burns will perform a show number to highlight fashion through the ages.

One big difference for the 2017 show will be the lighting. Last year, after taking a liking to the chandeliers in the Grand

Theatre, all the lights were left on, defying the norm of using spotlights.

The theater has since been remodeled, so the show is going back to basics. The organizers plan on turning all the lights down and highlighting just the runway, putting more focus on the models and the vogue.

The designers will have greater responsibilities than in years past. Managing 200 models—the number who were selected from the auditions—would be difficult, so the designers will have to coordinate with the models directly. Of course, there are also more designers now.

“This year, the most difficult part would probably be the amount of designers,” Aranda said.

That’s why next year the producers of the show hope to expand it into a fashion week, which would allow for more designers, clothes and time to showcase the talent in the city.

“The designers are only able to showcase 10 styles, and it gives you a great preview of what the designers can offer—but, for designers that want to show quantity, they could possibly get that in a fashion week type of event,” Aranda said.

“[It is] important to know what you are wearing and creating a persona with it.”

Zakotah Sevon, model

Model view After going through auditions on May 20, the 200 chosen models made their way to the mezzanine level at the Grand Sierra Hotel for the rehearsals.

The models ranged in age from 6 to 60.

Each designer was allocated just over an hour to rehearse a routine with the help of choreographer Berumen. Hyper kids, enthusiastic parents and excited models put their best feet forward.

Ayris Kambon, a model for Mystique Boutique, auditioned for the show last year but was unable to participate because of other commitments.

“I’ve been practicing a lot—walking down the hallway, practicing my stances and poses,” Kambon said. “Even if you have done it for years and years, it does take a while to get comfortable walking down the stage in front of so many people.”

As with many of the models in the show, Kambon has dreams of making it big in the modeling world. It’s something she’s wanted since she was a little girl.

“I remember my sister dressing me up in her clothes, and I would always be the one to pose when the camera hit me,” she said. “I was just so full of it and just loved it so much.”

There are also some returning veteran models from previous years’ shows. One such alum is Zakotah Sevon, who is returning to walk for designer VonRoe. “[It is] important to know what you are wearing and creating a persona with it,” Sevon said. “You can’t do the same walk for every outfit, as it is created for this special occasion.”

Another model for VonRoe, Krista Hyatt, who has been part of the show for three years, has an interesting story to tell. She suffers from spinal meningitis, which has caused her to be completely deaf in one ear and 80 percent deaf in the other.

“I kind of walk in my own rhythm since I can’t really hear the music really well,” Hyatt said. “I feel the vibrations, which helps.”

Accompanied by her parents, who were proud and enthusiastic about their daughter’s

success, it was impossible to spot any difference between her and the other models.

“I want to meet Tyra Banks and learn from her,” she said. “I want her to teach me her ways of modeling. She’s a huge inspiration.”

Smaller matters Another big change for the show this year is the inclusion of children’s clothing for the first time ever. When Sippee's children’s boutique and Robin Monteith Design signed up for the show as designers, the producers of the show were excited to involve children.

“It is a lot easier than we expected,” Aranda said. “They are very attentive, paying attention and focused. The opportunity we have created here has a lot of kids excited.”

While the rehearsals were in full swing, Robin Monteith was sketching, selecting and deciding the outfits and models for her collection.

Monteith worked in the garment industry and designed clothes in Los Angeles. After moving to Reno with her husband, she decided to get back to her designing roots.

“The process for me in terms of designing is first, look for inspiration,” Monteith said.

“For me, I have really been taken by the color indigo of late, and I have also been enjoying the amazing outdoor scenery we’ve had. …

The snow this winter and the spring being so vibrant have been my inspiration right now.”

Monteith likes kids to look like kids, so her line consists of a lot of natural fabrics, like cotton. She describes her line as “comfortable” and something her own kids could’ve played in when they were smaller. “[The models] are amazing,” she said.

“Today was the first time I got to meet them, and they are an awesome group of kids. I am super stoked that each of the garments I designed for them, suits them. … It’s such a rush when the kids are in the clothes, and you see people’s reactions. Kids always get a great reaction because they are just so dang cute.” Ω

The Reno Fashion Show will be held at the Grand Sierra Resort, 2500 E. Second St., at 8 p.m. July 8.

Carole-Ann Ricketts uses stones in her paintings as metaphors for adapting to life in a new culture.

Stepping stones Carole-Ann Ricketts Carole-Ann Ricketts has lived in the United States for close to 15 years, but the feelings of being a newcomer stand out fresh in her mind—and her work. The British artist is now settled and happy, but that was not the case when she first made the move to the United States. Her newest exhibit, Habitat, reflects her life—which has been full of beauty and adaptation— through the most basic of items, stones.

Growing up in Wales, Ricketts used to climb on big “standing stones” that ran across her family’s property, which sat atop an old hill fort from the Iron Age. Standing stones are large, ancient upright stones (think Stonehenge), and their placement on her family’s land was said to have mythical alignment. Her mother, a holistic therapist, and father, an environmental scientist, taught Ricketts to look to the physical environment for inspiration. The magical energy of her homeland was special to Ricketts, and the area “always had a pull.”

As an adult, Ricketts moved to South Beach, a neighborhood in Miami Beach, Florida, and struggled to find where she fit in. Even the language felt foreign.

“It’s supposed to be English, but it’s not English,” Ricketts said with a smile. Jokes went over her head, and things she said often left people confused or shocked, as her words had much different meanings in the States.

People in Florida were quick to try to define her. They thought she must believe and act a certain way politically or socially because she was white, middle-class and spoke English. She wanted the freedom to be herself. But the collision of old culture

with new left Ricketts feeling lost as to who she was as a person and as an artist.

And the judgments of others crippled her creativity.

“Coming to America, I was dazed,” she said. “The idea was that we were in a melting pot, but the reality was there are separations. I went through a period when I first moved where I couldn’t make anything.”

It wasn’t until she moved to Reno in 2004 that she found a landing place where she could regain her bearings and rediscover her art. Reno’s welcoming art scene embraced Ricketts with no pretense and gave her strength to create and find herself again as an artist.

“It’s not fake,” she said. “They let you do your thing. I love that!”

Channeling her triumph over the tribulations with moving cultures and countries, and her love of nature, Ricketts developed Habitat, currently on display at McKinley Arts & Culture Center.

The collection of prints, paintings and ceramics tell the story of an immigrant in two worlds that sometimes meld and other times clash. Oval shapes representing stones adorn every piece in one way or another. Some of the stones are aligned in an orderly way, such as in a three-by-fourfoot painting titled “Manorbier Cairn.” The stones in it are organized and stacked in order of size, the biggest on the bottom, like a tall snowman made of rocks against a coastal vista of blue and green. The top few rocks look like they could be teetering, eager to move. But they stay put.

Transitions can be painful. Taking inspiration from the landscape of her youth and her current surroundings in Northern Nevada, Carole-Ann Ricketts’ exhibition captures and displays the feelings behind this common human experience. Ω

Habitat by Carole-Ann Ricketts, is up at McKinley Arts & Culture Center, 925 Riverside Drive, through Aug. 11. A reception is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. July 6.

“So, do transformers get car insurance or life insurance?”

Bad form The latest Transformers movie, Transformers: The Last Knight, gets the dubious distinction of being the worst in the series.

That is some sort of major accomplishment.

It’s not the easiest thing in the world to look at this collective pile of movie manure and decipher which of the five is the worst. It’s like going to a frat house the first week of a semester at Dickhead University and trying to pick out the dumbest, drunkest douche in the place. All of the qualifiers are terribly, criminally lame.

I’m giving the award of franchise worst because it’s just so clear how every participant in this enterprise, from director Michael Bay right on down to the production assistant who smeared glycerin on Mark Wahlberg’s pecs, is jaded, tired and played out. Nobody really wants to be in this thing. The stink of “Who gives a shit … just pay me!” hits your nostrils with Wahlberg’s first line delivery.

Yes, Wahlberg, who has the honor of essentially being Shia LaBeouf’s stand-in for the series, returns for his second go-round, and he looks embarrassed.

He should be embarrassed. He’s publicly declared that this is his last Transformers movie, with his performance and demeanor indicating he checked out the day cameras rolled on this mayhem. You just get the sense of a guy who is mocking the whole thing.

Also along for the ride, the formerly acclaimed Mr. Anthony Hopkins, acting all nutty like he did in Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula, with the big difference being that this is a Michael Bay film as opposed to a Coppola film. So, acting all nutty in a Michael Bay film gives off the impression that you have just given up and thrown any kind of reasonability to the wind with your line deliveries.

I can’t pretend to tell you what happens in this flick. I know Optimus Prime was floating towards his home planet all frozen and shit, and he gets sucked into some sort of scheme to betray his race and all humans. His part is kind of like Vin Diesel’s in the last Fast & Furious movie, that of the pawn in somebody else’s evil scheme, who

probably won’t go rogue for the entire film. The big difference here is that Optimus Prime doesn’t get to mush his mouth all over Charlize Theron, and—it goes without saying—Optimus Prime has a greater acting range than Vin Diesel.

The best part of this movie is when Hopkins inexplicably goes to Stonehenge to witness a robot battle then gets blown up, leading to the silliest death scene ever. Yep, I just issued a spoiler.

Anthony Hopkins dies hilariously in this movie. I hope this spoiler pisses you off so much that you don’t go to the movie. Be mad at me for the next 10 years, but I know I did you a favor.

Other folks who show up include John Turturro, whose “I’m in a Transformers movie, but it’s OK because I’ve sold out in an unorthodox, hip sort of way!” shtick got tired four films ago, and the voices of John Goodman and Steve Buscemi. That’s actually three quarters of a The Big Lebowski reunion.

I’m surprised they didn’t throw some money at Jeff Bridges to deliver a few lines. That would’ve been the most novel thing in the movie. Eh, they probably needed the cash for Mark Wahlberg’s tanning and body hair removal bills.

Transformers: The Last Knight plays like a Worst of Michael Bay sizzle reel. It’s two and a half hours of things smashing into each other in fast-cut fashion, accompanied by bombastic music and lots of crane and slo-mo shots. In other words, it’s exactly what we’ve come to expect at this point.

Picking a time to go see a Transformers movie is like picking a time to have dysentery. Protect yourself, and your innards, by choosing to do something better for your health, like punching yourself in the face until your eyes pop out and your nose falls off. Ω

Writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour follows up her notable feature debut, the authentic vampire story A Girl Walks Home at Night, with another horror story. This time out, it’s cannibals. Suki Waterhouse plays Arlen, newly exiled to a desert landscape where she is quickly captured by cannibals and watches as her arm and leg are cut off and devoured.

After escaping, she wanders around a bit, eventually stopping by a safe haven run by The Dream (Keanu Reeves). Some business involving the daughter of one of her captors, Miami Man (Jason Momoa a.k.a. Aquaman), represents the only thing that passes for a conventional subplot in this purposefully rambling, meandering affair. Amirpour gets a mixed bag result with her sophomore effort, a film that looks amazing, boasts a great soundtrack, and has a few good creepy passages in it. Still, if a cohesive story is what you seek, you won’t find it here.

You will, however, find Jim Carrey in a strange extended cameo as the Hermit, a dude who literally eats crow. The movie never really comes together as a whole, but it’s worth watching if you like post-apocalyptic cannibal movies and Culture Club (Available for download during a limited theatrical release).

The Cars franchise gets a nice little rebirth with Cars 3, a much, much better movie than Cars 2, and a slightly better movie than the first Cars. If you’re keeping score— and, really, you shouldn’t be, for there are far more pressing matters in your life—that still makes Cars 3 one of the more mediocre offerings from Pixar. Still, a mediocre Pixar film is better than most animated movies. Jettisoning the stupid spy movie bullshit—oops, I just cursed in a review for a G-rated movie … sorry, kids—that made the last installment convoluted and useless, the folks at Pixar choose to go an earthier, more emotional route with this one, and it works, for the most part. They also find a way to get the voice of the late Paul Newman into the mix, and hearing his beautiful growl again definitely warms the heart. Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is getting on in years, and he’s facing fierce competition from newer model cars like Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), a strong, highly-trained vehicle that is beating McQueen on the racetrack. After a calamitous accident that renders his beautiful red sheen primer gray, McQueen is faced with either retirement or a new training regime comeback, Rocky III-style. The movie plays around with the notions of retirement and the rites of passage to the next generation, pretty heady stuff for a G-rated animated movie. Give the screenwriters credit for finally coming up with a story for Lightning McQueen that caters as much to adults as it does to kids.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The trippy Marvel fun continues with this big, nutty, spiraling sequel that brings the fun, along with a lot of daddy issues.

Star-Lord, a.k.a. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), had some major mommy issues in the first movie, and this time out his dad takes a turn at messing with his head. The dad comes in the form of Ego (Kurt Russell—yes!), who we see hanging out with Quill’s mom in the ’70s during the film’s prologue. (The CGI and practical makeup anti-aging effects on Kurt Russell ranks as one of the best examples of that particular trick.)

After a killer opening credits sequence, the Guardians—including Quill, Baby Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (David Bautista) and Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper)—find themselves on another quest.

They are quickly diverted to Ego’s planet, where Quill finds out more about his celestial origins. Russell proves to be perfectly cast as Quill’s bombastic father, with Pratt possessing many of the legendary action film star’s alluring traits. Seeing them on screen together, at one point playing catch with an energy ball Quill conjures with newfound powers, is one of the film’s great joys. But writer-director James Gunn isn’t going to settle for an easy story about a wayward son reuniting with a dream dad.

The Mummy

Tom Cruise is fully committed for a gonzo performance as Nick Morton, a soldier moonlighting as a tomb raider in Iraq. After stumbling upon the tomb of an ancient Egyptian nasty named Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella), he winds up on a plane with the mummy, some soldiers, and a mysterious woman named Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis).

The plane crashes, and then the weirdness begins, with Nick surviving the crash due to being possessed by Ahmanet. Post-crash, Ahmanet starts sucking face with cops and dead guys, turning them into a zombie army as she marches on London. Along the way, Nick meets Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe) in a subplot so freaking unnecessary it’s maddening.

Jekyll is here because he’s part of Universal’s new “Dark Universe” scheme, an attempt to Marvel-size the classic Universal monsters into some sort of connected, ongoing series.

What a seriously stupid mistake this is. Nothing connects these monsters other than their original gothic origins, so trying to make them modern stand-ins for Iron Man and the Hulk is a joke. And, take it from me, Dr. Henry Jekyll is no Nick Fury. Cruise is stuck laboring in this convoluted, yet sometimes almost entertaining, mess. The Dark Universe is a bad idea, and the movie suffers for it.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

In the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, a bunch of pirates run around and act like dicks while being pursued by ghosts. If my memory serves me right, that is basically the plot of all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

The new one, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales rehashes the same plot, with Johnny “The Whore” Depp doing his whole drunken Keith Richards pirate routine again as Jack Sparrow. Actually, his Keith Richards routine has devolved into something more akin to Dudley Moore in Arthur 2: On the Rocks. I reference the Arthur sequel, because the original was somewhat funny, but the gag got real tired in part two. So it goes with Depp’s meandering, mumbling, tipsy performance as Jack Sparrow, the feared pirate that everybody in the world seems to have some sort of beef with. He’s laboring with a joke that stopped being funny four movies ago. This time out, a new legion of undead sailors is after Jack due to his having a compass that can lead them back to the land of the living, or some bullshit like that. The band of dead sailors is led by Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), some dude who was trying to rid the world of pirates in his living days, but wound up a cursed ghost under the sea.

Wonder Woman

The DC Universe gets the blast of fun it sorely needed with a film that gets it right on almost every front, and features a performance from Gal Gadot that makes it seem the role was her birthright. Gadot lights up the screen and commands the camera on a level with Christopher Reeve and Robert Downey, Jr., in past films of the superhero genre. She simply is Wonder Woman to the extent that I can’t picture another actress ever even attempting to play the character again. She owns it. It’s hers. Game over. There’s always that faction of fans who bitch about superhero origin stories, wanting these films to jump straight to the hardcore action, but I love a good superhero origin story done well, and this is one of them. The movie starts with young Amazonian princess Diana running around in her island paradise, practicing her fight moves and yearning to be trained as a warrior. After butting heads with her sister Antiope, Diana’s mother, Hippolyta, relents, and allows Antiope to train Diana, as long as she doesn’t tell her about the true powers she possesses. For those who don’t know the Wonder Woman back story—I was a little rusty on it myself—it’s a sweet little piece of mythology and mystery, and director Patty Jenkins (the Charlize Theron Oscar vehicle Monster) perfectly paces all the revelations. It says a lot that Gadot and Jenkins make you feel good in a movie that has its share of violence and villainy in it.

Full plate Meeting with a group of friends for dinner—and wanting something reasonably healthy—the recently opened Great Full Gardens South seemed like a good option.

The decor is pleasant. The service was attentive, and the menu includes many vegan and vegetarian options for those avoiding meaty bits. There definitely seemed to be something for everyone, regardless of diet.

We shared a pair of portabella mushroom caps ($8.29) stuffed with a seasoned vegetarian boca mix, topped with melted mozzarella, vegetable shoots and sprouts. I paired my portion with a cup of tomato soup ($4.10). The ’shrooms were fantastic, and the soup was zesty and delicious, with black pepper, fresh herbs and big chunks of heirloom tomato. I could have ordered just those two items and been satisfied, and I kind of wish I had.

Wanting to try a dinner special, I chose linguine con vangole ($20.99),said to be a family recipe of minced clam, white wine, lemon, garlic and red pepper.

The pasta was fine, but the sauce was overpowered by a surprisingly fishy pungence I wasn’t crazy about. I tried to enjoy it and am normally big on shellfish, but I can’t recall having had a clam-based dish that was less appealing.

My wife’s double edge paleo salad ($14.99) combined seasoned, grass-fed tri-tip with a mix of Brussels sprouts, kale, jalapeño, carrot, onion, mushroom, red pepper and tomato, sauteed together in coconut oil. The beef was tender, and the discs of sliced Brussels sprouts provided a nice bit of crunch, but seasoning was lacking in both the meat and dressing. A touch of salt and perhaps balsamic vinegar could have helped.

A friend’s pollo taco salad ($13.89) was much better, with grilled organic chicken breast, black beans, cheese, salsa, green onion, tortilla strips, sour cream and a mildly spicy lime cilantro dressing atop a bed of spring mix greens. I probably would have punched it up with a little more heat, but it was fine as-is. Another friend’s teriyaki bowl ($13.49) filled with chicken, mushroom, carrot, cabbage, broccoli, pineapple, cilantro, scallion, brown rice and organic teriyaki sauce was even better.

Further down the table was a half order of tri-tip melt with a side salad ($8.15) and a pupusa ala Great Full ($10.99). This time the meat was ably supported by melted horseradish cheddar, garlic aioli, lettuce, onion and tomato on toasted sourdough. The salad was basic, but the sandwich was quite good.

Stuffed with green chili and queso fresco, the corn pupusa was topped with grilled chicken, black beans, melted cheese and half an avocado, with sour cream and salsa on the side. A side salad with the cilantro lime dressing completed what was a pretty impressive mix of flavors.

My buddy’s cheeseburger looked nice on the plate with its brioche bun and side of blue corn chips and fresh salsa, but it was something of a letdown. Our server indicated that they would not cook to a doneness less than medium, and I don’t think they understand the difference between medium and medium well. What started as a third pound of beautiful, grass-fed beef was turned into a dry, disappointing experience. It occurs to me that a restaurant with so many veggie options might not be the best place to expect a juicy burger. Ω

It seems that people rarely enjoy attractions where they live. Parisians don’t visit the Eiffel Tower. New Yorkers don’t go to Times Square, and Renoites usually only visit Virginia City when they have visitors. So on one of his first visits before relocating here a few years ago, when my father-in-law suggested visiting there, I thought, “What the heck, haven’t been there in a while.” That became a short-lived tradition—fun trips to the Comstock whenever he visited. Of course, now that he’s a local, we haven’t been back.

That being the case, when I decided to go see what Virginia City Brewery and Taphouse had to offer, there was no question that we’d make it a family expedition.

We loaded up the car and off we went up Geiger Grade, followed by a short hunt along C Street for parking.

I have mixed feelings about Virginia City. It just barely balances fascinating local history with faux tourist dreck—shop after shop peddling nostalgia in the form of re-creations of everything historic. It’s not hard to find the genuine, but most just settle for the easy—shuffling from one pseudohistoric experience to the next, satisfied with a convincing blend of authentic and manufactured history. I’m a sucker for history, but I find no joy in an old timey souvenir tin Coca Cola sign.

And so it is with Virginia City Brewery as well. I really didn’t have any expectations, but the “Old West saloon meets modern brewery” was not surprising to walk into. I’d tasted maybe one or two of the beers previously, random choices appearing in Reno establishments. Nothing really wowed me, but it certainly piqued my interest enough to visit the source.

Situated in a prime spot on the main drag, the brewery is well positioned to cash

in on tourists’ Old West love and genuine high desert thirst. Spirits are also available, but beer is obviously the main draw—it’s a brewery, after all.

We ordered tasters—five house brews plus one guest beer to complete our flight.

Sadly, the house pale ale and IPA were both sold out—perhaps an indication of the best beers, but more likely just a sign of the hop-loving times. I often order IPA as my first taste of a new brewery, but it was not to be this time. Instead, we relied on a mix of other styles—a pilsner-like lager that was nice, light and refreshing on this hot day, an average wheat beer, and a red ale. Two stronger beers, including an unseasonable pumpkin ale, completed the flight. The guest taps made up for the missing hoppy house beers with three from Revision, two other local brews and a cider.

While none of the beers were great enough to merit a special trip, if you’re in Virginia City, the brewery is worth a stop.

They capably serve a parch-quenching lager as well as a winter warmer, regardless of the season. Their deftness with hops remains a wildcard.

Our bartender, Sarah, was a highlight when we went—working solo, keeping up with a mostly full bar and six tables, growler fills and a popcorn machine. When asked for recommendations, she responded with as much solid beer knowledge as any bartender I’ve heard.

Virginia City Brewery probably won’t blow your mind with its beers, but there’s something enjoyable about drinking in this old building, perhaps where Mark Twain or Julia Bulette once drank. After some Old West touristing, you could do worse than to end your day with a pint here. Ω

For crying out loud Dusty Miles and the Cryin’ Shame Dusty Miles is one hell of a clever stage name for a country music singer-songwriter and guitarist—except it’s not.

“It’s my name,” Miles said. “My middle name is Miles. My last name is King.”

With a name like that, did he have any choice in becoming a country musician?

“I guess not, and it’s funny because my mom doesn’t even really like country music all that much,” he said.

Miles and his band—the Cryin’ Shame—have been playing the local music scene since 2012. Their repertoire is comprised of mostly originals—songs that meld classic rock, Americana and rockabilly influences with the band’s country roots. And while the band certainly doesn’t fit under the cowpunk label, there is a subtle punk undercurrent to the music.

“I think because I grew up in Reno, and it’s like that was the music that was coming through,” Miles said. “Years ago—I mean, I’m sure it’s sure the same way now—Reno was a good spot for punk rock bands to stop off, so we kind of draw on that influence. You’d have that and then you’d have Johnny Cash or, like, Willie Nelson … or Kris Kristofferson or Merle Haggard playing at the Nugget. So there was always that—I don’t know—that Reno, Nevada, kind of like Western influence that was always the undertone of things. And then it came more to the forefront, because I’m older. That’s what I like—so that’s what I like.”

Country and Western may have won out as Miles’ preferred musical style, but the other influences remain—for both him and his bandmates.

The Cryin’ Shame is comprised of multi-instrumentalists. Drummer Danny Horton is also a singer-songwriter and guitarist. Chris Rodgers, guitar and lap steel player, is the group’s youngest member.

He stood in on bass for a time when the current stand-up bass player, Christopher Beucherie, was in grad school. Rodgers has a bass that Beucherie gave him when he left the band. It’s a nice exemplification of the musicians’ diverse influences.

“On the back of it, he’s got Lemmy’s signature,” Miles said. “He’s got Lee Rocker on the back of it.”

“It’s got autographs of all the bands that we’ve played with in the past—try to get them to sign it,” Beucherie said. “Well, we didn’t play with Lemmy, but I did take it to the concert and have him sign it.”

“It sounds way cooler when you tell that story that we played with him, by the way,” Miles interjected.

“And Eddie Spaghetti from the Supersuckers signed it, but, I mean, it’s all his stuff now,” Beucherie said, nodding toward Rodgers. “And you should be getting other people to sign it.”

“I was waiting for them to all wear off—then paint something else on the back,” Rodgers joked.

For all their musical influences— perhaps in part because of it—the bandmates’ combined sound is wholly distinctive. That they apply it to producing mostly originals is icing on the cake.

And there’s a new, as-yet untitled album on the way.

“We should have it pressed and ready for people’s greasy little hands, I’d say by the middle of July,” Miles said.

The record will be released digitally, as well as on CD and vinyl. Ω

Jack and jilted My boyfriend of three years cheated on me, and when I found out, he dumped me. I’m getting over it, but boy, it’s a slow process. Some days, I’m fine, and others, I feel super sad or really angry. Is there some way I can speed up my recovery so I can get on with my life?

Though we tend to see our gloomier emotions—like sadness and anger—as “bad” and the “whoopee!” emotions, like joy and happiness, as “good,” evolutionary psychologist and psychiatrist Randolph Nesse explains that emotions are neither good nor bad—they’re “adaptive.”

They’re basically office managers for our behavior, directing us to hop on opportunities and avoid threats through how good or crappy particular things make us feel. As Nesse puts it, “People repeat actions that made them feel happy in the past, and they avoid actions that made them sad.”

Nesse believes that sadness may, among other things, be evolution’s version of a timeout. You retreat to your couch to boohoo, lick your wounds and seek comfort from the two men so many women turn to in times of despair, Ben & Jerry.

And yes, there’s value in this sort of ice cream-fueled Kleenexapalooza. Being sad is telling you “don’t do that again!”— while giving you the time and emotional space to figure out what exactly you’re supposed to not do.

Because your emotions have a job to do, you can’t just tell sadness and anger, “You’re no longer wanted here. Kindly show yourselves out.” They’ll go when you show them that they’re no longer needed, which you do by reprocessing your painful experience into something useful. Unfortunately, there are some challenges to this, because when you’re upset, your emotions and all the things you’re emotional about become a big tornado of stuff whirling around in your mind “Wizard of Oz”-style.

But what do we humans understand really well? Stories.

And it turns out, studies on coping with breakups by communications researcher Jody Koenig Kellas find that creating a story about the relationship and the breakup seems to help people adjust better and faster.

Essential elements in this seem to

be relating your complete story in a “sequential” way, having a narrative that hangs together and makes sense and illustrating it with examples of things that happened and giving possible reasons for them.

The need to mentally organize what happened into a detailed and coherent story pushes you to reflect on and make sense of your experience in ways that less directed thinking does not. What seems especially important for moving on is making meaning out of the situation—turning the ordeal into a learning experience that gives you hope for living more wisely (and less painfully) in the future.

Kellas’ results dovetail with decades of research by psychologist James Pennebaker, who finds that “expressive writing” (similar to what Kellas recommends) speeds people’s recovery from emotional trauma. But say you hate to write.

Research by social psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky finds that recording your story (say, with the voice memo app on your phone) also works. You could also just tell the story to a friend or a homeless guy at a bus stop.

Finally, consider the difference between healthy storytelling, used to find meaning in what you went through so you can move on, and unhealthy “rumination”—obsessively chewing and rechewing bits from your relationship without insight, solutions or relief. Psychologist Susan NolenHoeksema finds that this builds “a case for hopelessness,” prolonging distress and recovery.

A powerful way to unbuild a case for hopelessness is by recognizing that you have some control over what happens to you. You get to this sense through accountability—admitting that you have some responsibility for your present situation. Sure, blaming someone else probably feels more gratifying in the moment. Unfortunately, this tends to lead to insights with limited utility—such as the revelation that Cheerios, oddly enough, do not actually cheer you up. Ω

And so many people I know haven’t known it to be an even playing field. … Absolutely it matters, because they can’t inspire us and because we don’t support them. We don’t support what they stand for.

The New York Times headline on this year’s summit was “The Base Wants It All. The Party Wants to Win.” Was it that simple? Does it matter who’s nominated against Trump?

Yes. Of course it does, because there were many people like me who could not vote for Trump’s opponent, because she is so centrist, so notstanding-up-for-the-working-class, for social justice. The only reason I may have voted for her was because of her stand on the environment versus Trump’s, and I see that as the one thing that can’t be reversed. Right?

But, yes, it matters who Trump’s opponent is. … Absolutely. Especially with the growing movement of … the people who stand for social justice.

I see this as another 1960s, when everybody was fighting against and

When you attended the last summit, there was talk about how, “We’re going to go back to our communities and we’re going to organize at the grass roots level.” Did you get a sense that had happened and has it happened here?

I would say yes on both levels. This year the People’s Summit was different than last year because you had to apply to be accepted into the People’s Summit this year, whereas last year anybody could go. And so the people who were accepted … are people who are actively working on the revolution.

And so there was a very different group of people at the People’s Summit this year than last year. Like, last year, I ran into a lot of Hillary supporters. There were a lot of people this year who at best are wary of the Democratic Party as it stands now. …

And as far as what’s happened here [in Nevada], I see many people working hard on the revolution. For example, Working Families Party, I think, is doing a darn good job. Ω

Ready for the Death Party Last week, I feigned punditry and opined that our senior senator, Mr. Heller, would indeed vote for the Republican Death Act (RDA), that his vote was a slam dunk, no-brainer, go ahead and bank it.

Less than 24 hours after I made my call, Dean made his, declaring in Vegas that he could not support the current bill.

Well, hush my hash browns, Hiltrude! The dude could not wait to pull my pants down to my ankles!

I was genuinely surprised.

In fact, a better word is “gobsmacked.” I mean, this is the guy who voted for Betsy DeVos, Scott Pruitt, for every villainous d-bag in Twitler’s Cabinet of Cretins. I can’t honestly ever remember a vote of any consequence where Heller didn’t roll with The Party Line. And then, we’re presented with the unexpected and refreshingly welcome possibility that he will actually buck the GOP and

vote like a sane, caring, reasonable human being for once. Like I said—gobsmacked!

Please note the use of the word “possibility.” Because we all know that Deano has spent this last week in a terribly torrid Washington kitchen. One can just imagine the tone of President Dum Dum as he made his first call, all nice and charming and cheery for, oh, about 20 seconds or so, before getting down to business. “So Dean, why the fuck are you fuckin’ this all up, fercrissake, what the hell is goin’ on here?”

We’ll see what happens (by the time this issue comes out, we should know the fate of the RDA). But I will say I would be absolutely delighted to be totally wrong with my original prediction, my Heller-cred in shreds on the slaughterhouse floor, if it means that (1) Heller hangs tough with his “nay” on this truly dreadful,

disgusting, hateful bill, and (2) if Heller’s “nay” turns out to be instrumental in dooming this Mitchy Meanness.

Now, if this nastiness should actually pass the Senate and land on Dum Dum’s desk, the proper Democratic response has already been laid out by none other than Hillary. Last week, she tweeted, “Forget death panels. If the Republicans pass this bill, they’re the Death Party.” Bingo. There you go. Death Party. That is some snappy, zippy, catchy shit, right there. And a snarky little soundbyte tailor-made to inject into the howling airwaves and raging mailboxes of Amerika via a blast of TV spots and postcards with one relentless, merciless message. “The Republicans are now The Death Party.” Let ’em suck on that one for a while. Ω
