Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Greetings from Portland, Oregon!

We take journalism ethics very seriously at the RN&R. We work hard to keep a firm separation between our advertising and editorial divisions.

And we’re diligent about disclosing conflicts of interest. For that reason, I usually try to avoid writing in the paper about my secondary career as a musician. My band’s name might pop up in the nightclub grid from time to time, but we’ve often not covered big arts events around town just because my group was on the bill.

Rest assured, my band is not a huge money-making machine, so I’m sure I wouldn’t see much financial benefit from any shameless self-promotion in the paper, but nevertheless it’s important to me that I not use my megaphone just to hype my own stuff.

(Some readers might remember that I wrote a cover story about my current band’s first-ever tour back in 2010. Even then I focused on sad and unglamorous aspects of tour life, and also used it as an opportunity to write about former Renoites who were thriving in other cities.)

But that’s a filter through which I often see the world. When I travel to other cities, I see those cities through the eyes of a touring musician and can’t help but compare those other cities to my hometown, Reno.

We’ve had some great shows on this tour. But here’s what I’ve noticed: At each of those shows, we’ve played with great bands from each of those cities, and had good crowds, but they’ve mostly been bands that have sounded like us, crowds are already into the things we’re into.

I’ve written about this before, but it’s a wonderful thing about Reno, plainly visible from a distance, that our music bills tend to be diverse and eclectic. Folks from one corner of the scene are likely to show up for events for other kinds of music.

You’ll see the punks at a country show, the rappers at a metal gig, the jazz guys at a songwriters’ showcase.

Reno is big enough to sustain a thriving music scene but small enough that the scene is not compartmentalized. We mingle.

Yes, check the internet Re “Is science dead?” (feature story, April 20): Compelled to comment on the anthropologist. Whatever the “freaking” day is for her, she dismisses realities as “misunderstandings” by insinuation, “that vaccines can cause Autism.” Google “The Truth about Vaccines” for a documentary that presents the complete science.

And “genetically modified food is somehow harmful.” If you want to know, Google “The International Monsanto Tribunal.”

Bruce’s columns I usually get some useful information from reading letters, mainly to get a pulse from my neighbors here in Northern Nevada.

Lately, however, I am dismayed at hate letters aimed at Bruce Van Dyke for his vitriol toward Trump. Yes, BVD does get vulgar at times, but I’m guessing it’s because his blood pressure is at the danger level every time he sits at his keyboard to write about the president’s latest idiotic statement and, seemingly, his passion for lying about something.

These people who cannot tolerate vulgarity from a weekly columnist should perhaps take a chill pill and look at the vulgarity that is coming from our president—practically on a daily basis! This is a man who doesn’t seem to have a decency filter. He disrespects women and is totally unapologetic for it. The filth that comes from his mouth would make Nixon blush.

But Van Dyke is the bad guy?

a majority of our population is hoping for far less.) Hillary may have had her faults, but I believe she at least has a heart and the brains to have led our country in a positive direction. Emails—please! Compared to Trump she is a saint.

So how about you haters try to understand where this all started about a year ago, and why Bruce and others get so heated they can’t help but let a few F-bombs fly. The Trumpman laid the foundation for it all.

Diversity tour I completed a solo motorcycle tour April 11. I had been holding off going to The South, afraid to argue about their beliefs on women’s rights, abortion, religion and skin color. I called this my Motivational Ride, because I am moving abroad in May. Yep. Had enough.

The South loves deep fried food. I asked for vegetables, and they deep fried okra for me. Fruit? “No that’s not in season.” Worse were the “yuge” billboards in Harrisn, AZ: “DIVERSITY IS A CODE WORD FOR WHITE GENOCIDE.” Nearby on the other side of the road was this: “WhitePrideRadio. com” I crunched on my Harley, stomach hurt badly. How is it possible to think like that? I wanted to scribble in fat black on those boards: “You know what in-breeding does, don’t y’all?”

Follow the leader?

“According to my scientific friends, one of our greatest and most glaring deficiencies is the failure of us in this country to give high enough priority to scientific education and to the place of science in our national life,” President Eisenhower said in a nationally televised address in 1957.

What we like about that is that the nation had a president who had intelligent, educated friends and that he listened to them. He was speaking in a time, of course, when the United States was a community, its people skeptical but not cynical, sometimes adversaries but not enemies. The nation’s leaders set different examples in those days. Though of different political parties, they worked together and granted each other the benefit of innumerable doubts and good intentions.

Last weekend, we marked the 47th Earth Day and got a taste of the kind of sense of community it once inspired. It is well to remember that Earth Day began in 1970 in a land that was torn and divided over war. At the time, our people thought things were as bad as they could get. We had no idea.

Earth Day was the idea of Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. senator from Wisconsin. He chose Paul McCloskey, a Republican U.S. House member from California, as co-chair of the steering committee. Members of opposing parties worked together in those days. These days, the

congressional dining rooms are having trouble finding customers because of the polarization. Opposing members might be seen together. Former Harry Reid aide Jim Manley recently told the Washington Post, “The downfall of collegiality in the Senate is symbolized by the lack of members going to the Senate Dining Room.”

Community doesn’t come from nowhere. It comes from the heart, but it can be either encouraged or discouraged by leaders.

“Community, of course, is an abstraction—like justice or freedom, faith or morality,” wrote Richard Goodwin, an aide to President Kennedy. “It cannot be imposed by the powerful, resting as it does on our willingness to enact the more spacious and generous qualities of individual nature. But the possibilities of community can be destroyed, aborted by an environment that discourages, even prohibits, a mutuality of interest, a shared responsibility.”

Sound familiar? Leaders can inspire, but far too often they do no such thing. Instead they call on our lesser qualities, pitting us against each other in a fashion that supplies them with offices and authority.

If someone looks for the worst in man, he will surely find it, Lincoln is said to have claimed.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Nowhere is it carved in stone that when a leader calls on our faults and prejudices, we must follow the leader. Ω

A new letter to Rep. Amodei Dear Mark, It’s been a few months since my last open letter to you, but this time I’m writing at your request. You seemed perplexed at your recent town hall when a member of the audience asked why health care in the United States can’t be more like the single-payer health care system she experienced when working in Australia.

She told you the Australian model is “far and above a better system,” claiming more people are covered at less cost. You sounded intrigued and asked Nevadans with information about why single-payer health care works to provide it to you. I’m happy to oblige.

Let’s begin with the structure of our health care system, which is unlike any other in the world—and not in a good way. Did you know we spend far more of our Gross Domestic Product on health care (17.8 percent in 2015) than any other developed country? We also have the worst health outcomes. Don’t take my word for these shocking facts. They’re

easily Googled from solid sources and are widely known and accepted by health researchers everywhere. Your health policy staff can confirm this information in about five minutes, tops.

In fact, I just looked at a recent health expenditure chart from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development that shows Australia spends the least per capita of 35 developed countries on health care at $4,420 (11.4 percent of GDP) while the United States spends the most, at $9,451. Then I quickly discovered that Australia’s health outcomes are considerably better than the United States. For example, people in Australia can expect to live longer with far less disease than our citizens. Your town hall participant was definitely on the right track when she suggested you consider Australia as a model.

Single-payer systems work better than our fragmented private insurance structure wherever you look. Private health insurance is supposed to thrive in a competitive

marketplace, but the reality is we are at the mercy of corporations that constantly merge and morph in a quest to corner the marketplace and maximize their profits.

Before Obamacare, they did everything they could to exclude potentially expensive customers, charging them prohibitive prices if there was even a hint of a preexisting condition.

Experts estimate the United States spends about a third of every health care dollar on administrative costs involved with insurance billing and marketing, twice as much as our Canadian neighbors.

We don’t regulate prices, either, as most countries do, except through our publicly financed health care programs, Medicare and Medicaid. Did you know we are one of just two countries in the world that allow drug companies to advertise directly to consumers? Or that most countries strictly control drug prices? Our political system has been so compromised by pharmaceutical campaign contributions and high-paid lobbyists that Congress

specifically banned Medicare from negotiating with drug companies when they approved Medicare Part D. As you and I inch towards the magic age of 65, it’s comforting to know that Medicare will protect us from medical bankruptcy caused by a sudden serious illness. We may choose to purchase add-on insurance to further insulate ourselves from medical costs as we join millions of older Americans who benefit from single-payer health care provided by our government since 1965. While other countries started with a single-payer system like Medicare, or Medicaid for low-income and disabled Americans, they gradually expanded to a single-payer system for everyone. It just makes sense.

Now that the single-payer health care system has caught your attention, I join your constituents in hoping you will become our champion in Congress, advocating for replacing Obamacare with quality, singlepayer health care for everyone. Maybe you can explain it to Senator Heller, too. Ω

Protection for sex workers The failed Storey County recall election of Sheriff Gerald Antinoro on April 10 was financed by County Commissioner Lance Gilman, owner of the Mustang Ranch Brothel and CEO of Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center.

Gilman accused Antinoro of selectively enforcing traffic laws around the Center and imposing unnecessary new work card permit requirements at the Mustang. Storey County constitutional conservatives, along with Republican Assemblymember Jim Wheeler, supported the sheriff. Gilman spent a lot of money on this recall, but the people of Storey County voted NO and kept Antinoro in office. They feared the wealthy and politically connected Gilman was seeking more power.

There is no other state in the United States where a brothel owner can also be a county commissioner and the CEO of a large public-private partnership. Nevada should be proud it is a pioneer of legal sex work.

But by making sex work legal through regulated pimps operating brick and mortar brothels, Nevada has created powerful, politically connected special interests. Dennis Hof is Nevada’s most famous legal pimp. Hof was also in the news the week of the recall election, promoting his proposed Las Vegas Raiderthemed bordello.

As a thought experiment, let’s strike through sex worker. There, that just leaves worker. These people are workers who have certain skills that are in demand.

Some work for another, called pimps. In Nevada, some pimps operate legally.

Other sex workers are independent contractors. But they may have help.

People who are not pimps but help sex workers for pay or friendship are known in the sociological literature as market facilitators.

Legalized prostitution in Nevada is the tip of the iceberg, just like legalized sports betting is the tip of the U.S. sports betting take. There are many times more women,

transexuals, cis and gay men working in the sexual services black market in Nevada than in the legalized brothels.

They advertise on the web and work the hotels, bars and clubs from the glamorous strip to the dive motels that the legislature threatens to shut down.

Nevada’s legal pimps do not like the independent contractors for the same reason that Las Vegas cab companies don’t like Uber threatening to put them out of business. Las Vegas is trying to strangle Uber in red tape. Nevada’s legal pimps do not want the independent contractors to take from their legalized monopoly business model either.

The internet has facilitated sex work as it has Uber, complete with rating sites that allow customers to rate providers’ skills or warn of the lack thereof to prospective “hobbyists.”

Senate Bill 488 was also in the news because it threatens sex workers and their market facilitators by codifying that just driving a provider to her job

can be considered sex trafficking and could get that driver up to 20 years in prison. Fortunately, no action was taken on the bill. The sex trafficking rescue industry also wants to stay in business and does so by supporting laws to harass the independent contractors in order to “save them.”

Also in the news, cheerleaders at Coastal Carolina University were cleared of prostitution charges because police declared them just “sugar babies” dating older men under a financial arrangement.

It seems if you have an arrangement more complicated than cash left on the dresser, you are no longer “trafficked.”

And, Melania Trump won her defamation lawsuit against a reporter who claimed that she turned tricks when she was a model, or maybe had “arrangements.”

My hope is that someday no one would even think that being known as once an escort, even a First Lady, was a slur rather than a compliment. Ω

The Axios website in Virginia portrayed Sen. Dean Heller as the face of the upcoming 2018 election campaign.

A 500-page disclosure of financial contributors to the Trump/ Pence inauguration costs was filed with the Federal Election Commission on April 18. That’s three months after the inauguration itself.

Inaugural contributions are another of the ways big givers curry favor in D.C. The largest contribution this year—and reportedly the largest known inaugural contribution ever—came from Nevada billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who ponied up $5 million for Trump’s party, an amount he could afford after withdrawing his promise of $650 million to build a Raiders stadium in Las Vegas.

Also contributing was Las Vegas casino exec Steve Wynn, who gave a mere $729,217, though his was an in-kind contribution of entertainment through his Wynn Resorts Ltd. After the second inauguration of George W. Bush, NBC reporter Lisa Myers gave a report on the Nightly News about mostly corporate money that paid for a $40 million inaugural celebration. Her report also contained a statement from Nevada’s Jim Gibbons, then a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Gibbons said that “Anybody who is against that [corporate inaugural contributions] obviously must be a communist.”

A Gibbons spokesperson later said the Gibbons comment had been taken out of context, that he had offered a lengthier comment that said anyone in the U.S. should have the right to spend their money the way they want.

it’s back, sort of Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee are circulating a proposed draft of a bill creating incentives to revive the proposed dump for high level nuclear wastes at Nevada’s Yucca Mountain in Nye County.

Pushing the draft are committee chair Greg Walden of Oregon, which has the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant, and the chair of the committee’s Environment Subcommittee, John Shimkus of Illinois, which has six nuclear power plants.

Nevada was designated for the nation’s only dump in 1987 after a pledge that two dumps would be built in the east and west was dropped, after Mississippi was excluded from possible sites because a U.S. senator’s sister owned the likely Mississippi location, after New Hampshire was excluded because it hosts the first presidential primary, after Washington was excluded because it was the home of the then-speaker of the House, and Texas was excluded because it was then the home of the vice president of the United States.

Energy Secretary Rick Perry of Texas (four nuclear power plants) opposed the Nevada dump when he wanted Nevada’s support for his presidential campaign but has since reversed his position.

Nevada has no nuclear power plants.

Panama rePorting wins Pulitzer A Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting went on April 10 to a consortium of journalism entities that produced the Panama Papers expose.

The reporting on offshore companies showed interrelationships among financial hideaways linked to mega-banks, drugs, corporate bribery, the Syrian air war and 140-plus politicians in more than 50 nations. Shadowy corporate filings in states like Nevada that allow corporate concealment played a role in the reporting (“Nevada aids and abets,” RN&R, May 12, 2016).

The reporting was done by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, the McClatchy Co., the Miami Herald, Süddeutsche Zeitung and other reporting entities.

Getting straight A rough week for Dean Heller after nevada’s u.s. sen. Dean Heller got through his town hall-style meeting with several hundred Nevadans in Reno last week, CNN sought an interview with him, but he declined.

The network reported, “His staff said he was short on time, but Heller said it was because ‘we don’t want to step on our message.’”

For days afterward, politicos in the state speculated on whether Heller had succeeded in getting his message to the Nevada public. And his effort to spin things his way was hampered by numerous interest groups trying to spin things against him. They were sending out messages within minutes of the start of the town hall.

Many of them came from sources who had only partial quotes to react to or who are out-of-state. An example: At a site called Axios, a writer named Jonathan Swan reported he pulled two quotes from Heller’s comments about Planned Parenthood.

These were those two quotes:

“I will protect Planned Parenthood.”

“I have no problems with federal funding for Planned Parenthood.”

The writer then sent those quotes to anti-abortion leader Penny Nance in D.C., eliciting a comment. Nance sent this comment: “I am very disappointed to read this and disappointed doesn’t even begin to cover the reaction our members in Nevada will have when we inform them of Heller’s new position.”

Swan then posted a story containing Nance’s reaction on Axios where Nevada Democratic Party publicist Stewart Boss found it. He sent it out in a message to newsrooms around the state of Nevada.

Had Nance heard or read Heller’s full and nuanced comments, she might have reacted differently—or not.

In the week after the town hall, we received 48 news releases that dealt with Heller and Planned Parenthood alone. That doesn’t count the ones dealing with immigration,

other issues, or comment and color from the event. Left and right were unhappy with Heller.

Nevada, which voted for legal abortion in a landslide in 1990, elected Heller as a state legislator, secretary of state, U.S. House member and then U.S. senator.

Over the course of his career, both politics and Nevada have changed a lot.

It was once possible to run for national office in the state and not worry about what national lobby groups like Nance’s Concerned Women of America think.

But as independent political spending has proliferated and the money has gotten bigger and bigger, candidates can no longer necessarily control their home fields.

Here’s a version of Heller’s comments from a mainstream Las Vegas Review-Journal account: “Heller denied a claim by speakers who said he voted last month to defund Planned Parenthood, a key source of contraceptives for many low-income women. Heller drew loud boos and jeers when he insisted his vote only allows individual states to decide whether to defund the program. He reiterated his belief that federal funds should not be spent on abortions. He also said both he and Amodei opposed the push by Republicans and the Trump administration to repeal the Affordable Care Act before the GOP legislation was pulled without a vote in the House.”

Here’s another, from CNN: “Heller invoked community health clinics as part of his answer to a question about whether he would protect federal funding for its services through programs like Medicaid. ‘At the federal level? Yes, we’ll continue—we’ll continue to look at this issue,’ Heller said, drawing more jeers. ‘I will protect Planned Parenthood,’ he said. He then qualified his answer by saying he’d support funding for the organization for specific health care services. Heller said he supports leaving decisions about whether to allow the organization to receive tax dollars to the states.

‘When the federal funding does come to the states, … the states [should] have the right to make the determination’ of how it’s used, he said.”

Offending bOth sides Once that kind of coverage was out there, interest groups and publications that appeal to particular groups started attacking Heller—though left and right were similarly upset with his posture: “GOP senator promises to ‘protect Planned Parenthood,’ then backtracks.”

The first headline is from Lifesite, an anti-abortion site.

The second is from Mother Jones, a leftist, populist site.

There was a time in politics when Heller, trying to navigate a middle approach that had something for both sides, would have had allies among some moderate Democrats to give him some political cover. But since the mid-1990s when Newt Gingrich and his followers set out to polarize the political system, the bipartisanship that once characterized U.S. politics has slowly slipped away. And at the same time polarization was descending on politics, Nevada was becoming more Democratic.

Heller had known how to function in a bipartisan system, as his service as a state legislator and secretary of state showed. But he has had difficulty functioning in D.C. in an age of meanspiritedness and division. But he has to. Moneyed groups like American Crossroads and the Club for Growth can come into states and set the agenda and force Republicans to address their issues. Displeasing them can court a GOP primary, as Heller learned when the Club for Growth sponsored the candidacy of Sharron Angle against his first campaign for the U.S. House.

He survived, but it was close and an object lesson.

Since going to D.C., he has been uncommunicative with groups back home, preferring to communicate through telephone conference calls with selected Nevadans more than in American Legion halls and student unions. That reluctance to deal with the public ran head-on into the widepread citizen activism that was generated by Donald Trump’s election in November. There is little sign of it abating any time soon. Ω

ix years ago, my colleague Kat Kerlin wrote a piece about how some families establish a “family night”—usually Thursday—on which parents and children have the evening meal together (“Set the table,” RN&R, April 4, 2011). After reading her article in page proofs, I went to her office and asked, “Don’t most families have dinner together every night?” No, she told me.

I heard a lot of reports like that in subsequent months as I brought up the topic with friends. Even if families do eat together, I heard, they’re likely to be engaged in things other than conversation—working on laptops, studying, whatever. I was astonished. When I was little, every night our family had dinner together.

We chattered like crazy, learning what each other’s days were like.

Of course, our upbringings in the 1950s and ’60s were different in other ways, too, and I began researching the differences between the way we lived then and now. The more I learned, the more one question preoccupied me. In the 1950s, lower and middle class families could survive—indeed, thrive—on one income. What happened to that one-job economy? How did we let it get away?

After the revival of the women’s movement in the late 1960s, and during the battle over the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s,

anti-feminist activists accused the movement of trying to force women out of the home and into jobs. Feminists replied that they just wanted women to be able to choose whether to stay at home. In retrospect, it’s pretty clear that what was happening was not just that women were choosing to work, but that they were being forced out of the home, not by the women’s movement but by an economy that was evolving. As the years passed, it gradually became less and less possible to support a family on one income until we reached the situation that exists today. It is now virtually impossible to raise a middle class family on one income—and increasingly on two.

When I wrote that the economy is evolving, that makes it sound like a natural process. It is not. Humans—mostly men—have engineered a new system in full knowledge that the changes would injure the working poor.

My research uncovered some causes, and I’m going to list a few here.

But do not expect an expose of Republicans. Both parties are culpable.

President Clinton once struck a deal with Republican leaders to target the working poor for more tax audits. Once that precedent was established, Clinton successor George W. Bush built on it. Eventually most tax audits were performed on the poor. No such thing had ever happened in the history of the U.S. income tax. It was not only heartless but inefficient— audits of the poor produce tiny financial results. It was bipartisanship in the era of polarization and meanspiritedness.

The Kennedy Tax CuT From 1952 to 1963 was a period of nearly unbroken prosperity. The top federal tax rate was 91 percent. That’s not to say all those at the top paid it. The wealthy are very good at evading taxes. But even factoring in evasion, the top effective tax rate was above 70 percent.

On Dec. 14, 1962, Democratic President John Kennedy proposed a supply-side tax cut to relieve “an economy hampered by restrictive tax rates.” By November of 1963, the votes were in hand to get the cut through Congress. The president’s murder that month may have delayed the vote, but it came in February 1964. It cut the top tax rate to 77 percent.

Pulitzer-winning economic reporters Donald Barlett and James Steele later wrote about the consequences: “The importance of the Kennedy tax-law change would be little noticed at the time.

But it was basically a new way of manipulating the system. Once the lawmakers, policymakers and lobbyists had seen the possibilities, they were more than eager to use it again and again. … Over the next 20 years, Congress would enact tax law after tax law that gutted the progressive structure of American taxes while throwing the doors of the U.S. Treasury open to those who could pay for access.”

When the rich paid fewer taxes, the burden of taxation moved lower on the economic ladder.

Today the top tax rate is down in the 30s.

In addition, it began a trend toward the accumulation of idle capital. Businesspeople used to plow more earnings back into the business. Pulitzer-winning financial writer David Cay Johnston has written: “A corporate tax rate that is too low actually destroys jobs.

That’s because a higher tax rate encourages businesses, who don’t want to pay taxes, to keep the profits in the business and reinvest, rather than pull them out as profits and have to pay high taxes.” (“Myths and taxes,” RN&R, April 4, 2011.)

In 2012, Johnston reported, “IRS data suggests that, globally, U.S. nonfinancial companies hold at least three times more cash and other liquid assets than the Federal Reserve reports, idle money that could be creating jobs, funding dividends or even paying a stiff federal penalty tax for hoarding corporate cash.”

deregulaTion and easy CrediT Workers often pay the costs of deregulation.

When Congress weakens carbon emission laws at the behest of corporations, children end up with asthma and other respiratory problems. In the late 1970s, deregulation was all the rage in government, particularly among Democrats,

who could go against type and make points with conservatives.

In 1978, under President Jimmy Carter and a Democratic Congress, a bankruptcy bill made it legal for corporations in bankruptcy to retain the old officers, pay off their own debts first, then pay workers and pensions if anything was left. (The current movie Going in Style is a remake. It changed the motivation of the elderly bank robbers from boredom in the first movie to the loss of their pensions to a bank in the remake.)

That same year, the U.S. Supreme Court released Marquette National Bank of Minneapolis v. First of Omaha Service Corp., which more or less turned credit card regulation over to the states. Congress did nothing to remedy the court ruling. Suddenly, middle class families—which had not previously had a lot of experience with debt—were being swamped with offers of easy credit. Then the states learned a new way to screw families.

“Have you ever noticed that all your credit card bills seem to get mailed to South Dakota, Nevada or Delaware?” asks Pat Curry at CreditCards.com. During the deregulation mania, the economy was super hot from the end of the Vietnam War, followed by the Arab oil embargo. There was double digit inflation, and interest rates shot sky high. State governments—including Nevada, in 1984—learned they could attract big credit card corporations by allowing brutal interest rates.

Luring customers into crippling debt became a prized corporate skill. In The Two Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Parents are Going Broke (2003), Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi reported how Citibank lending agents would steer families from the loans they wanted to loans they could not afford. The corporation was prosecuted and paid $240 million to settle the case. “In many cases, these lenders don’t just want families’ homes; they also want to take people’s homes. … This practice is so common it has its own name in the industry: ‘Loan to Own.’” Another measure, in a tax bill also under Carter, began the process of allowing corporations to dump pension obligations on workers.

Previously, the companies had provided lifelong pensions. Now, the workers were responsible for creating their own pensions through 401(k)s. Whether they would be lifelong depended on how good of investors they were. Working people with little time or financial experience were expected to develop the kind of expertise enjoyed by the staffs of company pensions before the rise of 401(k)s.

Also under Carter, the top capital gains tax rate was cut from 49 to 28 percent.

Usury (unethical or immoral loans with exorbitant interest rates) was made legal.

State laws against usury were preempted by congressional action. States could reclaim their authority and reinstate their laws, but many of them never knew they had that option.

with which to attack workers. Once-cautious financial institutions started handing out credit cards like cookies. Credit limits were increased as long as the payments keep coming.

Customers were milked for as long as they lasted. Financial columnist Jane Bryant Quinn wrote in 2007, “Banks don’t cancel your cards, as they did in the old days; they just keep charging until you break.”

When they broke, some availed themselves of bankruptcy, so the corporations demanded that bankruptcy law be made harder to use.

In 2005, Congress obediently enacted the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act. It did nothing to curb the corporations’ behavior, but made life harder for those trapped by corporate debt techniques.

“The simple fact that credit is easy to obtain doesn’t mean that you should be able to get money and then just wipe it out in bankruptcy,” said U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, avoiding the issue of corporate conduct. The fact is, credit card holders did pay their balances— sometimes several times over, in interest. The new law did nothing to stop that.

After the period of double-digit inflation passed, the credit card corporations learned that some card holders would tolerate incredibly high interest rates rather than go bankrupt. So they exploited that sense of responsibility and kept interest rates high long after other interest rates had dropped like a rock. They continue today.

In 2009, after the federal government bailed out Wall Street, it seemed to feel an obligation to do something about credit cards. The Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 was enacted to crack down on card issuers and the practices they use to lure people into getting in over their heads.

The companies said they needed time to get ready. They didn’t, but Congress—stuffed with

latc hk ey kid s campaign contributions—gave it to them. It was not nine days to get ready, but nine months, during which the corporations sent out interest rate hike notices and rules changes. The Democrats knowing the corporations were running wild, talked about moving up the law’s effective date. They dithered and, in the end, did nothing.

Part-time work Then part-time workers and temporary workers became popular with corporations, letting them avoid health insurance, sick leave, vacation pay and investment plans. Even in staid professions like law, medicine and education, what had been careers became the kind of thing college students and interns once did.

Even higher education—including the Nevada System of Higher Education—uses and abuses parttime workers.

Robert Samuels, leader of a union representing librarians and non-tenured faculty in the California higher education system: “So what you have at universities and colleges, you have top administrators, the people kind of running the show, making hundreds of thousands of dollars, sometimes, you

know, close to $1 million, and coaches making over $1 million, and all these people who are not connected to the essential mission of research and teaching, they’re making all of the money. Meanwhile, the people who are doing the basic function of teaching students and doing important research often have very low wages and very insecure jobs.”

In 1992, Microsoft paid a $97 million settlement to 8,000 part-timers for benefits it had failed to pay. “These temp workers at Microsoft, who called themselves ‘permatemps’ because many worked there for more than two years, asserted that the company maintained a fiction that they were temp workers by hiring them through temp agencies to avoid paying them stock options, pensions and health coverage,” the New York Times reported. Instead of changing its ways, Bill Gates’ corporation thereafter just adjusted its behavior by firing temps after six months, escaping the law. Hundreds of major corporations followed Microsoft’s lead.

Another avoidance tactic involved the Affordable Care Act, which requires owners of large businesses to provide health care coverage for those who work 30 hours or more per week. “To avoid that law, several companies like Walmart (WMT), Target (TGT), Trader Joe’s, Home Depot (HD) lowered the number of hours that employees worked to avoid paying health care,” CNN Money reported. “Some ended health care coverage for part-timers in 2013 and 2014. Thousands of workers were impacted.”

the Bush tax cuts Some legal strategies against the working poor are deft and surreptitious. Not these. They came right out and redistributed income upward. The working poor got nothing. The middle class got a little—a $1,180 tax cut per year, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Ah, but the folks at the top got more—$58,000 a year for the top one percent and $520,000 a year for the top 0.01 percent.

The tax cuts were enacted in 2001 and made permanent by the Democratic Congress and a reluctant President Obama in 2013. They increased both income inequality and the deficit.

Meanwhile the middle class got a tax hike—a 4.2 percent payroll tax increase, more than doubling the payroll tax. Like the sales tax, this is a small but potent tax that is collected so gradually that workers have no idea how heavily they are being taxed.

Workers do their part. They work hard and have productivity that is the envy of the world. But Germany, France, Portugal and every other democracy gives workers better pay, more vacation, better benefits, fewer hours. The U.S. has the highest number of two-income households.

Pulitzer-winning author Hedrick Smith: “Americans, far more than people in the advanced economics of Europe and Asia, accept and even endorse economic inequality as an integral feature of modern capitalism.”

David Cay Johnston: “Now, less than a century after its adoption, the tax system is being turned on its head. Since at least 1983, it has been the explicit, but unstated, policy in Washington to let the richest Americans pay a smaller portion of their incomes in taxes and to defer more of their taxes,

which amounts to a stealth tax cut, while collecting a higher percentage more in taxes from those in the middle class. The Democrats embraced this in 1983 when they controlled Congress. … Under the Republicans, beginning in 1997, this policy of taxing the poor and the middle class to finance tax cuts for the super rich was expanded through changes in the income tax system.”

Slowly, steadily, the burden on families over the decades grew. And there a toll in everyday life. When we postwar babies were kids, we never heard the term “latchkey kid.” It apparently existed as early as the 1940s but was not in common usage. There was usually a parent there when we got home after school.

It was usually a mother. Today, there would likely be a fair number of fathers, too—if families could

still afford it. We experienced joyful childhoods and started out in life with the pleasure of parents.

But the middle-class squeeze is destroying family life. Politicians talk about family values but tailor laws to annihilate families. Those families are burdened by taxes that used to be paid by those who could afford them, by debt shrewdly imposed, by jobs or multiple jobs that make off with family life.

Robert Kennedy once said that our incessant tracking of the gross national product does not count “the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play.” But when an economy tailored to the rich makes the lives of most people tense, driven, even miserable, we know those children pay a price—though it may not be counted—in the time they do not get with parents, in the time parents do not get with them. Ω

Gone but not

DaviD Crosby goEs baCk on thE roaD

E

ddie Vedder said something about worshiping the music, not the musicians. David Crosby has spent a career dealing with questions about who among CSN and CSNY is speaking to whom, about drugs and prison and the ethics of his liver transplant and so on and on. It may be why he sounds really pleased when he is asked about the music.

“Working on some new songs. Always a good thing,” he said when asked if his music was why he seemed in high spirits.

Crosby will appear at Reno’s Silver Legacy on Sat., April 29 as part of a tour announced Jan. 30, the “The David Crosby and Friends” tour that showcases his solo album Croz and the planned new album Sky Trails. He’s being supported by his son James Raymond on keys, Mai Agan on bass, Steve DiStanislao on drums, Jeff Pevar on guitar and Michelle Wills on keys/vocals.

He’s somewhat familiar with Reno.

“We’ve played there a number of times,” he said. “Crosby Stills Nash has played there. I think Crosby Stills Nash & Young might have played there as well. And I’m sure I’ve played there with Graham or by myself.”

He has found casinos a different kind of site for performing.

“Casinos are hard, you know. Some of the audience is there to see you, and some of the audience is there to see whoever’s on that night.

So they’re a little tougher. A little harder to win. Its not quite the same as an audience that’s all there to see you.”

Asked about whether playing with his son is different from any other kind of stage experience, he answers that question and then extends it to other musical matters, his tone of voice communicating italics on the things that excite him most.

“Yes. Yes, there’s a bond there,” he said.

“He’s a brilliant musician. A bril-l-l-liant musician. And so I’m very proud of him, and I’m thrilled to work with him. We get along extremely well, and we have a very good time.

You know what? I’m so lucky. And I have two people that I can write with at that level—him and Michael League. And I have two bands, one that was formed with him [CPR or Crosby, Pevar & Raymond] and one with Michael League [Snarky Puppy], and they’re both wonderful, and they’re completely different. But they’re both wonderful bands, and I can do it either way, either one of those bands, or I can do it by myself acoustic. And I can take three really good options—really completely different and really fun. Really good. So I’m pretty happy about it.”

In fact, there were some folks waiting for him after our phone conversation concluded, and he was anticipating the session.

“Well, you know, I can get happy thinking about it. I’m just about to go down there and start up this new one with my son, which is like CPR but with these two fantastic women added—Michelle Willis from the Lighthouse band, this singer/songwriter from Canada who’s going to be singing harmony with me, and Mai Agan, who’s this i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e bass player. She’s from, of all places, Estonia, and she plays in Scandinavia. She’s got her own jazz band, and she’s very, very good. I mean, very good. So it’s pretty terrific and couldn’t be much happier.”

Forward momentum A two-time R&R Hall of Fame laureate— for both the Byrds and CSN—Crosby has given a good deal of thought to the dynamics of bands.

“You know, groups have a natural dynamic that they go through. You get together and you’re excited and you kind of like each other and you’re really stoked, and you are having a great time. But as you go along, you wind up—it devolves, to the point where it’s just, ‘Turn on the smoke machine and play your hits,’ and there’s no forward motion. That’s not good enough for me. I can’t work with that. I have to be able to have forward motion. There has to be some new material and some excitement and some joy. And I can’t just sit there and do it for the money and take the path of least resistance. It doesn’t work for me.”

Crosby and Neil Young have given CSN/CSNY much of its reputation for social consciousness. And Crosby may be upbeat—as is true of many activists these days—because he is drawing enthusiasm

from the campaign against Donald Trump, which he supports and participates in. He had supported Barack Obama with pleasure, and Trump turns his stomach.

“He’s a racist,” Crosby said. “He’s a pig about women. He’s pretty disgusting, and he’s doing a lot of damage to the United States.”

During the month of Earth Day and the science march , he faults Trump for telling climate deniers what they want to hear.

“Unfortunately, these guys are climate deniers not because they don’t know it’s true, they do know it’s true,” he said. “It gets in the way of their making more money right now. … Instead of us progressing with trying to correct the situation, we will go four years backwards. And that’s really bad for the United States, but we’re screwing the whole world when we do that.”

what’s in a name?

It is part of the lore of rock that Crosby began writing “Long Time Gone” the same night Robert Kennedy was shot. I asked how it was possible to take that pain and put it o work so soon.

“It was an aggregate thing,” he said. “It wasn’t just Bobby Kennedy. It was losing John Kennedy, losing Martin Luther King, for God’s sake. You know—people that I really cared about and that I thought were good leaders, humane kind of people. It was incredibly tough to lose. So, you know, when they shot Bobby, I finally cracked and wrote the song.”

There is something in his voice that suggests the pain is not entirely past.

“Long Time Gone” gave its name to a feel, a sense of time and place, and so to this day it is employed to suggest that sense.

An article in the journal Antiques about the way some Texas women brought 16 incredible masterworks of European and American art to the suite intended to be used—but never occupied—by President and Mrs. Kennedy in the Hotel Texas in Dallas in November 1963 was headlined “A long time gone.”

A book of essays on the 1960s edited by Alexander Bloom is titled Long Time Gone.

A novel by Karen S. White that delves deeply into Kennedy lore is titled A Long Time Gone.

And David Crosby’s autobiography?

Using a loose style, combining blocks of bright color and pattern, artist Emily Reid creates whimsical portraits of animals. In her current exhibition at Never Ender, a pink cow sits next to a yellow hippo, while across the way is a walrus on a brilliant red background. On the adjacent walls, you can find a camel peeking into the frame, a duck, and a koala climbing a tree—among others.

Reid has a varied background and was always attracted to art, though she didn’t always paint portraits of pets and farm animals. As an undergraduate, she studied art but figured she’d never make money at it. She dropped out of graduate school, opened Chocolate Bar in Reno, worked for the Discovery Museum, and then decided she wanted to teach art. Reid currently teaches art to kindergarten through eighth graders at a private school, part time.

“I didn’t think you could ever make art and live here,” said Reid. It turned out that she found Reno’s arts community quite supportive, though.

She also has a farm of rescue animals.

It started with the mini pigs that she had as pets. “The pigs were the gateway animal,” she said. “Once people find out that you have a few weird animals …”

Over the years, people have asked her to take in animals—including pigeons—and when she can, she does. Last September, she had an exhibition of her work at The Basement in the old post office building downtown—right around the time that West Elm opened its doors on the ground floor.

A manager bought some of Reid’s work and heard her story about rescuing animals.

That led to West Elm commissioning her

to do a set of original paintings of rescue animals to be sold as prints on wood.

Her practice of painting animals started with all the chickens that Reid lived with and painted for her first solo show. She uses acrylic paints to create outlined sections that she fills in with color and then adds detail and pattern using colored pencils.

One of her favorite pieces in the exhibition at Never Ender is a painting of a duck.

The duck is somewhat pastel in comparison to her other pieces with tints of yellow, pink, purple, and gray. A large section of the duck is decorated with a circular pattern. The animals Reid paints become characters, even projecting personalities, imbued with the artist’s reverence for her subjects.

“I do love animals—I think that’s why I paint them,” Reid said, after admitting that she doesn’t always get to make the art she wants to make because people are particular about the animals they love.

Apparently, elephants are a big seller. “I’m often afraid that if I paint the animals that I really love, no one would want to hang them in their house,” she said.

She often starts with a color—like the red background on the painting of the walrus—then thinks about what might go well with it. In July, Reid will show some new work art at Süp. She has already made some shadowboxes, inspired by one of the first “real” pieces of art that she bought, and she likes the idea of incorporating moving parts. She is also considering doing a series of Aesop’s Fables.

Reid talked about how it is scary as an artist to step out of your comfort zone or to do something that your followers aren’t expecting. “I always think that if I do something new, people are going to be disappointed,” she said. “I’m excited and nervous at the same time.” What will come next remains to be seen. “Cliven sent us.”

Arms candy Bullets whiz, whistle and rip with a darkly comic ferocity in Free Fire, the latest from little known but super talented English director Ben Wheatley.

Wheatley has quietly been establishing himself as a solid indie director of action and horror with obscure gems like Sightseers, HighRise and A Field in England, along with one of the better installments in the horror anthology The ABCs of Death.

With Free Fire, Wheatley gets to employ his action-directing prowess along with sharp dialogue and snap acting. He’s working with his biggest cast yet, which includes an Oscar winner in Brie Larson, along with Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy and Sharlto Copley.

The film is co-produced by Martin Scorsese, and the setup sounds like the sort of movie he should be making.

Two groups come together in a deserted Boston warehouse sometime in 1978. One group is looking to buy some guns, and the other is trying to sell some. The buyers are led by Chris (Murphy, on his way to a big year with this and the upcoming Dunkirk), an Irishman who is very particular about what he wants from the deal. The seller would be Vernon (Copley), a weasel with a few tricks up his sleeve.

Chris’s party includes Justine (Larson), a contact who helped make the deal happen. The man bringing it all together is Ord (Hammer), a slick dude with a big beard and nice suit, much nicer than Vernon’s. He gives off the confidence of a guy who has done a thousand arms deals before, so this should be an in and out deal, right?

Nope. Tempers begin to flare, and when two people in the opposing parties turn out to be combatants from the night before, a tussle ensues.

That tussle escalates, and then a gun comes out.

Then, as it turns out, nobody is going anywhere because this is a shootout movie basically stationed on one set.

Wheatley’s staging of the elongated shootout is reminiscent of Reservoir Dogs and some of those great scenes in Heat. Everybody takes a bullet—or bullets—in the battle, but death never comes easy.

As somebody who gets shot in the head remarks, “I’m not dead. I’m just regrouping.”

A huge credit goes out to the audio department for the sounds of bullets traveling through the air and hitting their targets. I don’t think I’ve heard bullets whistle like they do in this movie before.

It’s a new sound, at least to me.

Hammer is an underrated actor who should be playing Superman right now over Henry Cavill. He blew me away in The Birth of a Nation last year with a riveting piece of work, and he’s equally good this time out. He has a knack for playing bad guys who are charming, a power he turns on full throttle for Free Fire, along with his comic timing.

He gets laughs when he and the characters around him are all bleeding to death, so that’s no small accomplishment.

Larson, as the lone woman in a mass testosterone flare-up, gets to do a lot more than she did in Kong: Skull Island last month. While she is amongst a group of jerks, she might be the biggest asshole in the bunch. Copley gets his best role in years as the fast talking jackass who causes trouble just by walking into a room. The normally sophisticated Sam Riley makes a mark as a sleazy henchman with bad barroom manners.

There’s some mystery involved in the payoff, but it’s secondary to the action, which is appropriately disorienting at times. I couldn’t always tell who was shooting whom, but this works for the movie in adding to the chaos of the situation.

Throw in an extremely well-placed John Denver song, and you have what amounts to a solid, eccentric step in the evolution of Wheatley, a white-hot director who is just getting started. Ω

Beauty and the Beast

This live-action take on the classic Disney animated musical isn’t a shot-for-shot remake of the original like, say, Gus Van Sant’s time-wasting Psycho effort.

However, it does follow a lot of the same plot points and incorporates enough of the musical numbers to give you that sense of déja vu while watching it. Thankfully, Emma Watson makes it worthwhile. Hermione makes for a strong Belle.

Since director Bill Condon retains the music from the original animated movie, Watson is asked to sing, and it’s pretty evident that AutoTune is her friend. She has a Kanye West thing going. As the Beast, Dan Stevens gives a decent enough performance through motion-capture.

The original intent was to have Stevens wearing prosthetics only, but he probably looked like Mr. Snuffleupagus in dailies, so they called upon the help of beloved computers. Like King Kong, the CGI creation blends in nicely with his totally human, organic cast member. The cast and crew labor to make musical numbers like “Gaston” and “Be Our Guest” pop with the creative energy of the animated version, but they don’t quite reach those heights. They are nicely rendered, for sure, but not on the masterpiece level that was the 1991 film. As for the romance between Belle and the Beast, it has a nice emotional payoff. In a way, the movie is a sweet tribute to the animated movie.

George Burns and Art Carney. The original was directed by Martin Brest, the guy who would go on to direct Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run and, uh oh, Gigli. This take loses all of the charm of that fun and slightly dark Burns vehicle. It’s super heavy on schmaltz, and it asks a strong cast to embarrass themselves for more than 90 minutes. Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin replace Burns, Carney and Lee Strasberg in the updated story, and that setup probably looked pretty good on paper. Unfortunately, they handed the film to Zach Braff, the guy from Scrubs, to direct. Braff does so with all the subtlety and nuance of an M80 going off in a candlelight yoga class. The heist itself insists that it is clever while being rather rote and mundane. Caine replaces Burns as Joe, the brains of the group. Joe, during a visit to a bank to complain about his upcoming foreclosure, witnesses a bank robbery. So, naturally, when he and his pals’ pensions go away, he decides to rob a bank. Then, after some gentle persuading with Willie (Freeman) and Albert (Arkin), they rob a bank. The big twist here is that they rob a bank wearing Rat Pack masks instead of the rubber nose glasses they wore in the original. That’s the biggest twist the film has to offer.

Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell, a groundbreaking, subversive 1995 piece of Japanese anime, gets a live-action redo with Scarlett Johansson sporting a formfitting flesh suit and a bunch of plot enhancers aimed at making the story more humanistic and straightforward. The results are always good to look at, but the puffed-up plot and safe PG-13 rating keep the film far away from being an upgrade on the original. It’s a largely boring, misguided affair. Johansson can’t be faulted for the film’s failures. She could’ve been a solid choice to play Major, a human brain inside a synthetic cyborg’s body policing the streets of a futuristic dystopia that makes the Blade Runner landscapes look like Lincoln, Nebraska, in comparison. As she has proven in Lucy and playing Black Widow, Johansson is a capable action hero. She also fares well as somebody placed in an artificial body, as she did in Under the Skin. She does a good job of appearing slightly lost but centered, a character who is in that body somewhere but isn’t entirely whole.

Most importantly, she can play a robot without seeming robotic. She gives Major some decent dimensions. Unfortunately, Major also has a new plotline involving her past life, and it turns the film into a bit of a melodramatic exercise.

The King Kong cinematic machine gets cranking again with Kong: Skull Island, an entertaining enough new take on the big ape that delivers the gorilla action but lags a bit when he isn’t on screen smashing things.

Among Kong incarnations, this one has the most in common with the 1976 take on the classic story, basically because it’s set just a few years earlier in ’73. While there is a beautiful girl the big guy does get a small crush on (Brie Larson as a photographer), the story eschews the usual “beauty and the beast” Kong angle for more straight-up monster vs. monster action. Unlike the past American Kong films, this one never makes it overseas to Manhattan, opting to stay on Kong’s island—thus, the title of the film. Kong himself is portrayed by motion-capture CGI, and he’s a badass. He’s also tall enough to be a formidable foe for Godzilla, a mash-up already announced for 2020. In the few scenes where he interacts with humans, Kong plays like an organic creature rather than a bunch of gigabytes. That’s right, there hasn’t been much mention of those human counterparts yet. That’s because, with the exception of John C. Reilly as a fighter pilot stranded on the island during World War II, most of the humans are bland. Tom Hiddleston might make a decent James Bond someday, and he’s a lot of fun as Loki, but he just doesn’t play here as a rugged tracker/action hero.

The Fate of the Furious

With The Fate of the Furious, easily the most stupidly titled installment in the Furious franchise—yes, even more stupid than the name Tokyo Drift—you get to see the single most disgusting, stomach-churning, horrifying moment in cinema so far this year. That would be when Charlize Theron plants a big, sloppy kiss on Vin Diesel, the image of which is some kind of “Woman from Monster Meets the Pillsbury Dough Boy On Steroids” nightmare.

Some five years ago, I made up a list of five things I never wanted to see, and that came in at number three, right under “Donald Trump as President” and “Spiders in My Scrambled Eggs Being Served to Me By a Man with Weeping Hand Sores.” Somewhere along the way, the Furious franchise went completely bonkers and became less about cars racing around and more about dudes who think hair on the top of their heads is total bullshit and also think upper arms should be the size of a bull’s torso.

It also went off on some sort of international spy team tangent, something that worked to a hilarious degree in Furious 7. In The Fate of the Furious, the franchise trajectory becomes ridiculous without being much fun. It’s just dumb and plodding.

Going in Style

This is a lousy remake of the “old guys rob a bank wearing rubber noses” bleak comedy from back in 1979 that starred

This sci-fi/horror film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds is an inconsistent but overall sturdy genre pic that looks great and ultimately delivers the goods despite a few slow patches and a couple of remarkably dumb moments. Credit director Daniel Espinosa for setting a grim tone and sticking with it through the very end. Gyllenhaal and Reynolds play astronauts pulling a long haul on an international space station. Gyllenhaal’s David Jordan is actually about to break the record for consecutive days in space, and generally prefers life in the stars to life back on our miserable planet. The crew is awaiting a space capsule containing samples from Mars, and these samples will put forth an amazing discovery: life beyond our planet. Ship scientist Hugh Derry (Ariyon Bakare) discovers a cell, wakes it up, and marvels at its ability to grow at a rapid pace. He eventually finds himself marveling at the little guy’s ability to grab on to his glove and basically mulch the hand within it. So, as the viewer quickly discovers, life on Mars was probably a total shit show, because this globular nasty—a distant cousin of Steve McQueen’s The Blob—digs on killing everything in its path. The expedition goes from a triumphant discovery to ultra protective mode in a matter of seconds.

Pick and choose Ah, Mongolian barbecue—there’s an element of creativity that comes with filling a bowl with a choice of raw meats, veggies, seasonings and sauces, then handing it over to be stir-fried on a flat-top grill. It’s fun and delicious, despite being neither Mongolian nor barbecue.

Mongolian barbecue began in 1950s Taiwan, inspired by Japanese teppanyaki.

Images of Mongol nomads cooking meat on their shields or a large, flat stone are often invoked, though there is no historical evidence for this. Traditional cuisine of the northeastern Asian grasslands involves simple meals of roasted or boiled horse meat or mutton with very few vegetables and seasonings. And it would likely be impossible to cook on the shields of wicker and leather used by the Genghis Khan’s army, much less lug around a heavy stone on horseback. Having said that, I’m a fan of build-your-own stir-fry, and recently-opened MB Grill is doing a pretty good job of it.

There are four sizes of bowls to choose from—kid-size ($7.95), small ($10.95), medium ($13.95) and an all-you-can-eat option ($19.95). The bowls may seem small, but beware that even the kid-size can be piled up with enough stuff to fill a plate.

If you do AYCE, I suggest using kid size bowls for more variety, lest you fill up on the first round.

On a recent visit, we skipped appetizers in order to focus on the main attraction.

Our server asked us to choose from up to two starches, which she wrote down on a card for our chef. My wife ordered brown rice and thin egg noodles. I chose udon and fried rice. All were pretty much as expected, and though more was offered each round, we weren’t required

to order starches. I’d probably lose the carbs next time I eat there and focus on the meat and veggies.

Meats were sliced thin and were still mostly frozen in order to preserve freshness. Beef, pork and chicken were available plain or marinated, along with beef short rib, lamb, sausage, ham and raw bacon.

Seafood options included squid, white fish fillet, imitation crab, shrimp, scallops, fish balls and fish cake. An empty bin was labeled “baby octopus.” The little squirts must have had the day off.

Non-meats included baby- and full-size bok choy, white cabbage, mushroom, baby spinach, green bean, broccoli, asparagus, water chestnut, baby corn, white and red onion, scallion, zucchini, celery, Thai basil, cilantro, tofu, bean sprouts, snow pea, pineapple, grape tomato, green bell pepper, jalapeno, minced garlic and raw egg. We also had condiment and spice choices, including chili paste, white and black ground pepper, chili powder and cumin. Sauce choices included curry, Mongolia, house special blend, sweet and sour, teriyaki, Szechuan, kung pao and Thai sweet chili. Suffice it to say, there was plenty to work with.

The chef did a good job cooking our concoctions without overdoing it. The meats were tender and tasty—the lamb and marinated chicken particularly so—and the veggies were crisp and fresh. I really enjoyed the bowl of seafood I put together.

In the past, I’ve been served fried and steamed fish meatballs, but they’re much better stir-fried—almost like a fishy scallop.

I could go on about our choices that evening, but, in the end, there wasn’t anything we didn’t enjoy. And MB Grill is definitely worth multiple visits. A person could eat there countless times and never have the same meal. Ω

Hip hops For my fellow beer-obsessed Renoites, there’s pretty big news in our area.

While the grand opening is still to come, operations have commenced. It’s time I addressed the elephant in the room. Let’s look at Revision Brewing Company.

First, walk with me down memory lane.

The year was 2010 or so. Some of my beer friends and I heard about a beer launch party downtown at the unlikeliest of places, a now-closed nightclub called Divine Ultra Lounge. We got there promptly to get in on the beer before it got too crowded and chatted a bit with the brewer, enjoying his Hopstar IPA. As the clubbin’ crowd started to filter in, we beat a hasty retreat.

Jeremy Warren was a local homebrewer just getting his fledgling Knee Deep Brewing Co. off the ground, starting with a small portfolio of brews like Hopstar and Tanilla, a vanilla porter. He talked about plans for his new facility. But as it goes sometimes, his vision of a brewery in Reno never materialized. Instead, he opened in Lincoln, California, then expanded to a larger facility in Auburn. Knee Deep grew rapidly, winning over hopheads around the country with its massive hop bombs, strong Double- and Triple-IPA beers that took hoppiness to new levels.

Eventually divesting himself from Knee Deep and its other owners in 2015, Warren looked to open a new brewery all his own. After an exhaustive search for the right place, Revision Brewing Company announced it had leased a 30,000-squarefoot facility in Sparks. After months of construction, equipment installation and permitting and licensing, Revision opened its doors recently to the delight of craft beer fans.

As expected, Revision’s beers are a love affair with the hop flower. Several variations of pale ale and IPA are already

sold in bottles and draft throughout our area, and Revision just won the gold medal at the 20th annual IPA Fest in Hayward, California. With time, Revision will expand its lineup to include barrel aged and blended beers. For now, though, the hoppy beers will flow.

I waited for the initial excitement and crowds to die down before visiting. I just wanted a beer on a regular day. As a destination, Revision isn’t much to look at or enjoy yet—inside and out, it looks like the vast warehouse it is, brewing operations taking just a fraction of the floor space.

The giant cooler, covered by a graffitistyle mural, looks large enough to hold my house and the lot it sits on. The taproom feels new and sterile. For a production brewery like this, brewing and shipping for distribution are the focus more than creating a place to drink and socialize. But it’s still a good place to sit down for tasters or pints.

Revision also does growlers.

My eagerness to taste Revision’s beers meant I had already tried several, so I opted for tasters of the one that was new to me and others I knew I preferred. Although all are hop-centric, differences in recipe, strength and hop varieties make each one unique. I enjoy the dank, herbal, fruity/ citrus flavors in moderation—the 11 percent triple IPA, “Dr. Lupulin,” I find drinkable but a little excessive. Besides the house beers, some variety is available via four guest beers and a selection of wine.

It’s an amazing time to be a beer lover.

Alluring trends in styles and flavors, access to dizzying choice in the market, and now, nationally anticipated, fresh, award-winning beer are factors making Reno a little bigger on the beer map. Ω

Bar sounds Dead Bars The music of Dead Bars, a five-piece group out of Seattle, is difficult to qualify. The guitar melodies sound deceptively like pop rock and are complemented with an overstated drum beat.

The vocals cut through the texture like a butter knife struggling to open a can of Hormel Chili. There seems to be nothing about the combination that suggests it would work, but—defying all sense of reason—it comes together in a way that feels so quintessentially punk.

“At the core, our songs have a good pop song structure with a lot of loud bashing and screaming,” said John Maiello, the lead singer. “Then, by the third chorus you’ll be able to sing along with us.”

Along with Maiello, the lineup consists of Jon Oddo on bass guitar, “Blom” on guitar, and C.J. Frederick on drums and guitar. The group is hunting for a full-time drummer.

In terms of the subject matter, Dead Bars often foregoes the screw-theestablishment type of lyrical content in favor of one that emphasizes storytelling.

The technique offers snapshots of the littlest moments of life, fully bringing the listener into the scene. Each song feels a little raw and unpolished, but that’s what gives the band its charm.

“I remember what bands like The Ramones did,” said Maiello. “They just fucking did it instead of getting caught up crafting the perfect songs.”

In March, Dead Bars released their new LP Dream Gig through No Idea Records. Like so much of their music, each song on the album paints a little vignette for the audience to step into and live in for a few minutes. One song in particular, called “Always Bet on

Clark,” loosely tells of a night of drunken mayhem that ensued a few years ago, during Dead Bars’ first excursion in the Reno area. It’s dedicated to Clark Demeritt of local fame, who led them on their journey.

Fresh off a show in California (and a nasty bout of norovirus they came down with after the aforementioned show), Dead Bars arrived in the Biggest Little city to play at the Holland Project.

Having been energized by the show, half of the band felt a renewed sense of health, which merited some late-night gallivanting to celebrate. So, following the trusty lead of Demeritt, they went out to sow the seeds of debauchery on Reno’s nightlife.

The night began at Shea’s Tavern and moved to the casinos, where Dead Bars and company found themselves alone to enjoy the cigarette smoke-filled ambience. Soon Maiello found himself at the roulette table in a dangerous state of affairs—wasted, money in hand, and pressured by threats of being kicked out by the bartender. So, like any reasonable drunk, he put all the money he could on black with reckless abandon and walked out $150 richer.

In no time, morning came. And in a moment so essentially Reno-esque, Maiello went to a convenience store and looked around through his hangover at children buying candy in one area, prostitutes hovering in another, and finally down at the wad of money in his hand that he had drunkenly won the previous night at roulette.

It’s times like these that make for Dead Bars’ best music.

“What we are at our core is a bar band just trying to make it,” said Maiello. “We are influenced by the shit that happens to us at night, and we write about it, because we always have one foot in rock ’n’ roll and one foot in reality.”

Currently, Dead Bars is planning for a show in Reno this summer. Ω

The 55th annual festival features three days of concerts, clinics and competitions at the University of Nevada, Reno campus. The event attracts some of the country’s most talented middle school, high school and college-age musicians, as they compete with their school bands, vocal groups and ensembles. Permanent Collection Acquisitions.

Over the past year, University Galleries has added three major collections of art in addition to several individual acquisitions to the Department of Art’s permanent collection. Caveheart I’m a woman in my 30s. I love parties and talking to people, and thank God, because I attend networking events for work. My boyfriend, on the other hand, is an introvert, hates talking to strangers, and loathes “shindigs.”

How do we balance my longing to go to parties with his desire to stay home?

I actually have personal experience in this area. Like you, I’m an extrovert. Also like you, I have a boyfriend who’s an introvert. For him, attending a party is like being shoved into an open grave teeming with live cockroaches—though, compassionately, it also includes an open bar.

This isn’t to say introverts are dysfunctional. They’re not. They’re differently functional. Brain imaging research by cognitive scientist Debra L. Johnson and her colleagues found that in introverts, sensory input from experience led to more blood flow in the brain (amounting to more stimulation). The path it took was longer and twistier than in extroverts and had a different destination—frontal areas we use for inward thinking like planning, remembering and problemsolving. So, introverts live it up, too—they just do it on the inside.

Extroverts’ brain scans revealed a more direct path for stimuli—with blood flowing straight to rear areas of the brain used for sensory processing, like listening and touching. They also have less overall blood flow—translating (in combination with a different neurochemical response) to a need for more social hoo-ha to feel “fed.”

Sometimes, you’ll really want your boyfriend there with you at a party—for support, because you enjoy his company, or maybe just to show him off. But understanding that “shindigs” give his brain a beating, consider whether you could sometimes take a friend. When he accompanies you, maybe set a time limit and be understanding if he and the dog retreat to the den.

Sure, mingling makes you feel better, but pushing an introvert to do it is akin to forcing an extrovert to spend an entire week with only the cat and a fern. Before long, they’re on the phone with the cable company. Tech support: “What seems to be the problem?”

Extrovert: “I’m lonely! Talk to me!”

Rubbin hood I grabbed my boyfriend’s phone to look something up and I found a Google search for local massage places that offer “happy endings.”

He says that he and his friends were just goofing off. Am I an idiot to believe him?

Sure, it’s possible that your boyfriend is telling the truth—that he and his buddies were searching out massage parlors just for a giggle.

To determine how likely it actually is, consider that people don’t behave randomly. We’re each driven by a varying combo of personality traits—habitual patterns of thinking, emotion and behavior that are relatively consistent over time and across situations.

Research by evolutionary psychologists David Buss and Todd Shackelford found three personality traits that are strong “predictors of susceptibility to infidelity.” One is narcissism—being self-absorbed, admiration-seeking, empathydeficient and prone to scheming userhood. Being low on “conscientiousness” is another—reflected in being disorganized, unreliable, lazy and lacking self-control. Last, there’s “psychoticism,” which, despite its Bates Motel-like moniker, reflects a con artist-like exploitativeness, impulsivity and lack of inhibition— not necessarily exhibiting those things while going all stabby on some lady enjoying a shower.

Consider whether your boyfriend’s “just Googling for kicks!” claim is odd and uncharacteristic or whether it’s part of a pattern reflecting one or more of the lovely cocktail of traits above.

Patterns of behavior predict future patterns of behavior—for example, trying to get you to believe that he only goes to strip clubs for the music and that he really was just working late with his boss, who seems to have developed quite a thing for body glitter. Ω

when I witness bears riding bicycles or tigers dancing on their hind legs or Aries people wielding diplomatic phrases and making careful compromises at committee meetings. While I am impressed by the disciplined expression of primal power, I worry for the soul of the creature that is behaving with such civilized restraint. Like at Chalk Bluff Dam, which is just west of West McCarran, the water is going [over a drop-off], so the water goes down, and it goes deep, and then it comes back up, and it starts to fill in that void from where it went down. … And it’s river-wide, and if you get into it with a raft or a kayak or tube, like people use all summer long, it’s going to at least flip you. This is 5,000 [cubic feet per second], at least, out here right now. The river is going probably 10 miles per hour. And you can’t fight that kind of current. OK? And there’s several situations along the river right now. The water is bank full, so if you get anywhere near the shore, you’re near the trees and bushes. OK? And water goes through trees and bushes, and people don’t. There’s several places upstream from here, mainly Glendale Dam and Chalk Bluff Dam, that have some very serious reversals going on right now, and they’ve already had a couple of rescues at some of those. Just this week some woman fell in the river.

The water wall You know, I was gonna go back to the old style Neon Babylon column this week, go back to those slaphappy days when I would write about hot springs and Super Blooms and all that swell stuff.

I really was. I spent last week in delightful Lone Pine, and it was freakin’ fantastic. (The weather there so much nicer and warmer than ours. The Southern Sierra was just awesome in its snowy splendor, and Lone Pine now is a free wi-fi town! The entire town! Great idea!

And then, I checked my Twitter home page. Big mistake. Buh-bye, Lone Pine! Because President Dum Dum completely derailed my Pollyann-ish mojo when he upchucked the following: “The Wall is a very important tool in stopping drugs from pouring into our country and poisoning our youth (and many others)! If the wall is not

built, which it will be, the drug situation will NEVER be fixed the way it should be!” (Yes, I follow Trump on Twitter. You bet I do. Gotta get my lies fresh!)

First response? The now standard “You Fucking Asshole” (YFA). Second? Jesus, Twitler, you stupid POS, you think there are just squadrons of people with backpacks filled with crank and coke hiking across the border every day in remote sections of Arizona and Texas? People who will be thwarted once and for all and curse your name forever when you build your big dumbass Wall of Moronia? Do you have any goddamn clue whatsoever as to how drugs actually get into America?

Well, lots of dope just drives right on in, through places like Tijuana, Nogales, El Paso and Laredo, places that, last I checked, weren’t slated to be walled off by

the Wall of Stupido. Yes, Border agents catch a lot of drugs at those checkpoints. Do you have any idea how many smugglers they don’t catch? Me neither. But I do know the cartels have boatloads of cash, and it seems safe to say there’s no shortage of folks who are willing to give it a shot for a big payday. And hey, there just may be a customs agent or two who’s open to the occasional five-digit “overtime” bonus, as well. Ya think?

Speaking of boatloads, here’s a quote from Admiral Chris Tomney of the U.S. Coast Guard, from a BBC report in 2015—“Well over 95 percent of the drugs are moving on the water via container ships, pleasure boats, sail boats, and fishing boats” (italics mine). Question, President YFA. How exactly will the Wall of Imbecilica put a stop to these smugglers? Ω
