When your heart skips a beat…

Electrophysiology of the heart While you may know that the heart operates as a pump and consists of four chambers, you might not be aware that it also has a normal flow of electrical impulses that travels from one part of the heart to another. These impulses occur at regular intervals and cause the heart to contract and relax and pump oxygenated blood to the body and vital organs.

When something goes wrong with the heart’s electrical system, abnormal impulses cause the heart to beat too slowly, or too fast, or irregularly. These electrical heart abnormalities are called arrhythmias. (Note that arrhythmia is not the same as an irregular heart rate.)

As a result, there is a branch of cardiology that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders. Called electrophysiology (EP) this specialty medical care uses advanced technology to detect, diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythm.

Arrhythmias may be harmless or serious and even life threatening. The consequence of an arrhythmia depends primarily on the structural condition of the heart and the presence of heart disease.

Arrhythmia can have many causes. Coronary artery disease; electrolyte imbalances in your blood (such as sodium or potassium); changes to the heart muscle; injury from a heart attack and the healing process after heart surgery are some of the causes for the disturbance to the heart’s normal rhythm.

Arrhythmias have many types, and the area of the heart in which they originate identifies them. An arrhythmia may be silent and not cause any symptoms. A doctor can detect an

irregular heartbeat during a physical exam by taking your pulse or by performing an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG).

Atrial fibrillation is a common irregular heart rhythm that causes the atria, upper chambers of the heart, to contract abnormally.

Some people can feel the arrhythmia when it happens.

They might feel palpitations, the “skipped beats”, thumping or fluttering in the chest or a sensation of the heart racing. Some can experience feeling faint or tired; light-headedness or passing out; shortness of breath or chest pain or discomfort. Any of these symptoms, however, might result from stress, anxiety or other causes besides an abnormal heartbeat.

Treatment of the arrhythmia depends on its type and seriousness. Some people with arrhythmias require no treatment. For others, treatment can include medication, making lifestyle changes and undergoing surgical procedures.

A pacemaker may be used to treat problems with the heart’s rhythm, such as a slow heart rhythm. A pacemaker signals the heart to beat if the beat is too slow. An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is similar.

However, an ICD delivers a shock to the heart if the heartbeat becomes dangerously fast. Sometimes, both pacemakers and ICDs are used in conjunction with each other if a patient has both disorders.

Limping along

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Here’s how much I pay attention to things that matter to others. Last week, on Nov. 7, my 20-year anniversary with alternative journalism in Reno came up. Twenty years ago last Thursday, my friend Mike Norris and his friend Larry Henry had a conference call with me on the telephone to hire me for the Nevada Weekly. As I recall it was a black combination telephone/answering machine. It had buttons and was attached to the wall. They offered me the princely fee of $25 a week to compile a “grid” listing all the local bars that had music.

It did not matter that I had never worked with any application but word processors—was it WriteNow?—and the grid’s design required use of QuarkXPress, they figured since I was young, I’d catch on. I had the important skill, which was an intimate knowledge of the local bars. Right they were. And when our third designer quit about four months into the job, they “promoted” me to design editor.

We redesigned that paper every single week. I was working about 80-100 hours a week at the paper, going to school full time, working at San Pauli’s bar in the Bally’s casino parking lot--and they were still paying me $25 a week.

They used to occasionally give me stock options in lieu of pay raises.

I think I still have about $3,000 in stock in my top dresser drawer at home. Those were some of the craziest, best days of my life.

Man, we owned the Blue Lamp.

We made it about 14 months before Mike, Larry and Bill Martin sold out to Jeff vonKaenel, owner of the Sacramento News & Review, my current boss. Over the years, I’ve been fired. I’ve quit.

I’ve told some awesome stories, and I’ve helped many others tell their own awesome stories.

It’s never really gotten old for me. We’ve got it down to a science, which I guess is how I manage to stay sober and out of the loony bin most of the time.

I keep waiting for someone to point out I’m not smart enough for this kind of work. Of course, if I was smarter, I probably wouldn’t have celebrated two decades mostly at the same job.

There certainly have been plenty of people who’ve offered to take it off my hands.

Re “The more you know” (Left Foot Forward, Oct. 24): I must admit that Sheila Leslie had me paying attention when she began to describe her visit to Madrid when she was an exchange student in high school many years ago. My attention was due to the fact that my family traces its roots back to the Euskal Herria region of Spain not too far from Madrid.

The interactions with the best friend and family from Madrid who visited the Western region of the USA to take a tour also stimulated my attention to read farther, so I continued to the end. That’s when I came upon the last paragraph which described a discussion that the visiting family was involved in that had to do with aging and health care in the “richest country on earth.” They could not understand how the USA “made such a mess of providing health care to its people” and “why would we turn over such a basic need to the profit-seeking private sector” etc. I almost choked on that line. I suggest to the author that she and her friends from Spain check out the latest statistics relating to how far down Espana’s economy is swirling around in the cesspools of that region of the world (a.k.a. Greece).

Apologies to Sheila, but I think she shot herself in her big left foot.

Paid security Re “No enforcement” (Letter to the Editor, Oct. 10): I witness the same thing that Justin wrote about on a daily basis.

I see both Reno Police Department and Sparks Police Department officers ignoring pedestrian crosswalk violations. My conclusion is that unless the officers are getting paid overtime they will not issue any tickets for this. The only department I’ve seen pulling anyone over for these violations is the Nevada Highway Patrol. So in conclusion, follow the money. If these departments do not get any special enforcement grants, which means paid overtime, they will not enforce the pedestrian crosswalk laws. Every time we hear there is a DUI checkpoint or other special enforcement efforts it is always tied to a grant that pays for overtime. So Mr. Police Chiefs, when will you start enforcing the crosswalk laws without receiving overtime pay?

This is why I no longer watch the NFL. What a bunch of hypocrites. They pay these players obscene salaries when a normal family can’t afford the tickets or concessions. Road kill The dull drumbeat of destructive progress continues in our society.

This time it spells potential doom for the deer herd that will now have to contend with the new highway link being constructed east of McCarran near the water treatment facility. For years, the herd has used some of the east fields of the UNR farm to find late autumn and winter forage, and to take refuge from November hunters roaming the Virginia range. It’s always been a delight to view the deer, wild horses and other wildlife during day hikes in the area. It doesn’t appear there is anything being constructed to accommodate their safe passage to the remaining fields on the west side of the link. Such accommodations do exist in other places with deer populations, like Oregon.

It’s sad that this far into the 21st century that we are still solving our growth issues by scraping away more habitat (including our own) in the name of progress.

More on violence Re “Tragedy in Sparks: Northern Nevada gets blindsided by sudden gun violence and death in one of our schools” (Feature story, Oct. 31): I protest the use of the term “gun violence” in this headline.

Had young Jose used any other weapon to carry out his final agenda, it wouldn’t be used in the headline. This tragedy isn’t/ shouldn’t be about guns, but the state of our society that makes a child want to kill innocent peers, and then himself. No, I’m not pro- or anti-gun, I just see this as a jab at an already sensitive issue and a chance for the writer to further push her own view of guns. Does it matter what size-brand-make of gun was used? I don’t think so. Does it matter that the “killer” (notice how I didn’t say “shooter”) was only 12?

Yes, it matters a lot.

Carried away Re “Bloody pointless” (Film, Oct. 24): I completely disagree. Carrie (2013) is not a remake of the 1976 classic; it is another adaptation of the book. And it has a lot more stuff from the book than the 1976 movie. (Don’t get me wrong here, the 1976 movie is pure genius.)

And how on Earth is the book bad?

This goes to show how Bob Grimm does not understand any piece of work (The Hunger Games, Bridget Jones’s Diary, etc.) and does not have an understanding of the movie at all. Anyway, Carrie was amazing, and Bob Grimm gave a poor review of the film. Portia and Alex gave wonderful performances, way better than the characters from the 1976 film. The only thing I agree with Grimm is how great Moore and Moretz were. Overall, this was a very poor review, but this movie was great.

Gun violence has increased in movies over the last 30 years, so say researchers at the Annenberg Public Policy Center and Ohio State University.

The Internet Movie DataBase put it quite succinctly: “Gun violence in PG-13 movies has more than tripled since 1985, the study’s authors write. In fact, last year movies with that rating contained more gun violence than the top-grossing R-rated movies.

Since 2009, the amount of carnage in PG-13 films has been roughly equivalent to films that are rated R. “‘It’s disturbing that PG-13 movies are filled with so much gun violence,’ Dan Romer, director of the Adolescent Communication Institute of the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) and a co-author of the study, said in a statement. ‘We know that movies teach children how adults behave, and they make gun use appear exciting and attractive.’”

That is where we find fault. We know that establishment culture likes to blame music, movies and games for the violence in our youth. That doesn’t make it true. In fact, one thing we know about conventional wisdom is if its logic is scratched with a Q-Tip, it’s going to take the surface off.

But, no, not in the actual study, which can be read at http://tinyurl.com/ngswfoq. Researchers also made the claim that the simple presence of imaginary guns on screen can increase aggression. The scientists call the effect “the weapons effect.” But the truth is that there are also many studies that found little correlation between imaginary and real violence. In OPINION

fact, not that this group is the personification of logic or wisdom, but presented with many arguments to support both sides of the debate, in June 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a California law that banned the sale of violent video games to children because games don’t cause violence in children.

We know that children’s minds are not developed, but we also know that the human animal is particularly keyed into images of danger. Children, at least those of age to watch PG-13 movies, know the difference between movie violence and real violence.

They play video games. They own pets. They know the difference.

And yet, we also know that those old cartoons, like Disney’s Snow White and Bambi, were enough to give us nightmares, and that was even before Disney vertically integrated news and entertainment.

It’s not the movies, folks. It’s the culture. Children acting violently isn’t just fictional, it’s real. Children follow the examples of their peers. They follow the examples of their parents. They see the newspaper with images of dead school shooters, or they listen to the radio, or they see the TV news and its images of war-torn countries and their children that we tore apart. Watched the NFL lately?

Of course children are violent. Violence is the only logical reaction to a culture that instructs them that the only way they will survive is to be prepared for violence. Not cartoon violence. Not two-dimensional violence. Real violence. Our militarized society sets them with a hair trigger and then moans about the movies. Ω |

Wouldn’t it be great if justice included the poor?

Religion and politics are the two things you’re not supposed to discuss in polite company.

Yet these two forces guide us through a myriad of choices, individually and collectively, that determine our personal and societal values. The intersection between these two forces can be fraught with thorny issues, by especially when a religion’s belief Sheila Leslie system conflicts with an individual’s freedom of choice.

One key example from the 2013 Legislative session involved SB 192, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which would have “protected” freedom of religion while interfering with reproductive rights by giving pharmacists and doctors the opportunity to deny prescriptions or medical services they morally rejected, such as birth control.

The bill passed the Senate but died in the Assembly when it was clear there were no specific examples of government interfering with the exercise of religious freedom as guaranteed by the Nevada Constitution in Article 1, Section 4. Allowing health professionals to refuse to provide treatment

“Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute.

Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Struve explains the role of advocacy ministry in the context of serving as the “voice of conscience in legislative deliberations” while also assisting the various congregations to understand “what justice required in modern times.” The advocacy efforts on behalf of Nevada’s most vulnerable populations fulfill Christian values while also providing a balancing religious voice to the extreme-right.

Some of the social justice battles, won and lost, of the last decade have faded from memory but Struve discusses them in chronological detail, beginning with the fight over Gov. Robert Miller’s signature program, “Family to Family Connection,” in 2001. He recounts the multi-session advocacy efforts in criminal justice, the death penalty, child welfare and homelessness, along with the still unresolved issue of tax reform. The multi-year tortuous effort needed to enact common-sense change, such

based on a personal religious belief had the potential to create much harm and legislators wisely rejected the bill.

This is the third time in recent years RFRA has been presented to the Nevada Legislature, although without the support of many mainstream religious groups. The history of RFRA and a host of other social justice issues is recounted in a new book, A Humble Walk for Justice: Advocacy for the least of these in Nevada, 2001-2012, by Larry Struve. The work of Lutheran Advocacy Ministry in Nevada (LAMN) and the Religious Alliance in Nevada (RAIN) is well documented, providing a fascinating look back at recent history and the evolution of advocacy ministry.

Struve served as the RAIN lobbyist, representing the coalition of five mainline Christian denominations (Catholic, Methodist, Episcopalian, Presbyterians, and Lutherans). RAIN is a statewide organization, with no national counterpart, unique to Nevada. Members are motivated by instructions from the Bible, including the words in Proverbs 31: 8-9:

as ensuring discharged felons have proper identification documents, is familiar to anyone who has ever tried to assist an unpopular group of citizens.

Equally intriguing are the personal encounters between religious leaders and individual legislators including one insulting letter from an assemblyman received by Episcopalian Bishop Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori in response to her appeal on behalf of the poor in 2003: “There’s gotta be more Episcopalian Bishops besides you.

Your opinion is pretty far out there, and strikes me as an opinion of a woman with no taxpaying parishioners (who would suffer greatly if your advocacy were granted). Sure seems to be an abuse of the protestant flag.”

For those who believe elected officials need to be reminded to focus on serving all the people, not just the wealthy or those promoting tantalizing film or technology industries, the history of LAMN and RAIN and their unique advocacy ministry in Nevada should be required reading. Ω

Nevadans must reject higher taxes for roads When an anarchist libertarian suggests we could do without the state altogether, the first astonished question is almost always, “But who would build the roads?”

Most folks don’t think very much at all about government, but everyone seems to believe the most by Brendan Trainor important function of the state is to somehow build roads, and obviously no one else can.

We once had a mayor in Reno, Pete Sferrazza, whose nickname was “Pothole Pete.” Linked to poor maintenance is the fact that tens of thousands die on the governmentbuilt roads every year. Does the road builder bear no responsibility for those deaths?

When asked to provide road safety, the state responds with more seat belt and motorcycle helmet laws, DUI laws and now anti-texting laws. Isn’t there a better way to have safer, higher quality roads?

drivers in Reno and Carson City environs pay $1,700 more annually in lost time, extra vehicle repair costs, accident costs, etc., than we should. The study shows our additional Vehicle Operating Costs (VOC) are the second worst among midsize cities in the nation.

Nevada lobbies Washington, D.C., for highway funds and will almost certainly want to raise gas taxes to pay for more government-built “infrastructure.”

Compounding the problem, the National Highway Transportation Fund is broke. Like the Social Security Trust Fund, it has been raided over and over for nonhighway spending, such as public transit boondoggles.

Government bureaucrats are considering putting a black box on your car that would track your miles driven and tax you based on that data. What else could that box do?

The ACLU and many libertarians are concerned that it would lead to tracking your whereabouts. Would

we need another Edward Snowden to come clean about how that data is used? There was a test drive of the device in Nevada, but Nevadans were leery of the privacy implications, and it has been shelved, at least for now.

The state is a monopoly provider of roads. We complain about the gas taxes, but do we stop to consider that monopolies tend to raise prices while decreasing service? And that is even more true for state monopolies than private monopolies.

Many roads in this country, particularly in the Eastern U.S., are privately built. In order to be truly private, a road or highway must have competition, and it must have the ability to exclude some drivers. Consumer options could even be built into a public highway, like private Hot Lanes where for a quick toll you can drive out of the congested lanes. Any Nevadan who has driven to Las Vegas and been slowed to a crawl the last

20 miles would appreciate a Hot Lane. Private roads would generally charge by a toll or subscription.

Competition would keep the tolls palatable.

Private roads offer the opportunity for innovation and choice. Hot Lanes, congestion pricing (lessening congestion by charging more for peak travel times), bundled road service options—who knows?

Competition would enable private roads to surpass public roads in service and safety.

Nevadans should reject higher taxes for roads. We can have superior roads without a government monopoly. We know the private sector offers more choices at lower prices through competition and consumer choice than a state monopoly does. Just look at public education. We need market solutions to Nevada’s infrastructure problems. We need a diverse discussion about transportation in Nevada, not one that is married to the idea that only the state can provide this public good. Ω

At a “brown bag lunch” that Washoe school superintendents have held in recent years, Superintendent Pedro Martinez listens to a question from a local resident.

Reno and Nevada gain There’s one advantage to being at the bottom of national rankings. Any movement up looks impressive. Reno found itself bracketed with Detroit last week when housing gains were posted.

Detroit and Reno led a national housing recovery list, according to Realtor.com’s “Turnaround Towns” report for the third quarter of 2013. The median listing prices for Detroit were up 44.3 percent, and 28.2 percent in Reno.

Of greater import is a new Nevada Housing Stability Index giving the state its best showing since January 2007, which happens to be the month from which most economists date the start of the recession, though it probably started earlier in Nevada.

According to the index, nine of the 12 indices used to measure housing stability showed improvement during the third quarter, with six of the 12 scoring average or above average on the grading scale.

“Areas that did not see significant improvements during the quarter include the pace of sales and a delinquency rate of 8.4 percent of borrowers being 90-plus-days delinquent,” according to an accompanying statement from the state Department of Business and Industry.

Caution urged in reporting After the shooting at Sparks Middle School in Sparks last month, there was a report that the attacker might have been motivated in some way by an anti-bullying video the school uses, and some students said they believed he had been bullied.

A few days before that shooting incident, a 12-year-old Florida girl named Rebecca Sedgwick killed herself, and two teenagers were arrested for allegedly bullying her.

The Poynter Institute, a journalism education organization, then posted an article advising journalists that their coverage should not exaggerate bullying or suicides, because there are no data that support notions of epidemics or trends.

“All suicides are tragic and complicated,” Poynter researcher Kelly McBride wrote. “And teen suicides are particularly devastating because as adults we recognize all that lost potential. Yet, in perpetuating these stories, which are often little more than emotional linkbait, journalists are complicit in a gross oversimplification of a complicated phenomenon. In short, we’re getting the facts wrong.”

There is no evidence to support many of the conclusions in reporting on these incidents, she wrote, and suggesting cause and effect is incorrect.

“There is no scientific evidence that bullying causes suicide.

None at all. Lots of teenagers get bullied (between 1 in 4 and 1 in 3 teenagers report being bullied in real life, fewer report being bullied online). Very few commit suicide. Among the people who commit suicide, researchers have no good data on how many of them have been bullied.”

I’m of the opinion that many of—and I need to be careful how I phrase this—there are a lot of social conditions, a lot of social changes, that have occurred in the last 50 years and they parallel women leaving their home occupations as mothers and homemakers and entering the workforce. While I don’t deny anybody’s rights to pursue their dreams regardless of their sex … the reality is there is a special role that women take on, biologically, as the bearers of children and the nurturers of children. I don’t know that we haven’t created problems in society by ignoring that important role—[attention deficit disorder] and various learning disabilities, hyperactive kids, kids building bombs in their garage.”

Moving on School chief tries to shift back to normality The life of a school superintendent is never a bed of poppies, but Pedro Martinez could be forgiven if he were feeling by particularly hard pressed lately.

Dennis Myers A terrible tragedy engulfed the school district on Oct. 21, drawing the attention of Martinez, parents, school board members and others concerned with education in the county away from the normal, difficult functioning of a school district.

Martinez had to lead the district’s response in coping with a whole array of sudden problems like morale of both students and teachers and shutting down a major Sparks school for a week—and then reopening it in an atmosphere of siege. (The school district has requested that the state superintendent count the cancelled

Speaking at a “brown bag lunch” at the Harrah’s Automobile Museum with local residents in the aftermath of the tragedy, Martinez fielded questions dealing with everything

from testing standards to why children could not take uneaten portions of their cafeteria food with them. The questions suggested that residents and parents are ready to go back to normal education issues.

Comments by Martinez, then and afterward, suggested that he has a philosophy, in dealing with problems, of staying as optimistic as possible and plowing ahead. He also never strays very far from the notion that the school district has a role in economic development in the region, which raises hackles in some quarters that are critical of the Broad Academy approach to education. Both Martinez and his predecessor attended the Academy, which trains school officials to bring the techniques of business to bear on education, but which critics consider a corporate madrasah.

Martinez told his audience that he is regularly frustrated because most of the state lags behind Washoe County in school performance.

When Nevada school superintendent James Guthrie complained about the same thing, he was forced out of his job, which is now appointive by the governor instead of the state school board. So it’s a sensitive subject. When a consultant made a comment about the poor reputation of Nevada schools at a meeting, Gov. Brian Sandoval flared up instead of accepting the conclusion, so there are political risks at drawing attention to the problem.

“I think one of the challenges up here in Washoe County, we outperform the state but yet we’re in a state of, oh, almost last in the country in graduation rate, very low in collegegoing rates,” Martinez said. “We do very well here in Washoe County.

One of the challenges that I have as superintendent is trying to separate those two components because we’re trying to attract companies to come here, families are moving in here. And so, for me, I just always feel it’s my responsibility to always be pushing the state about ’How do we get better as a state?’ And I want to do my part. And we do our part by getting our results.”

What does he do about the defensiveness of some about Nevada’s poor rankings?

“But I just think, frankly, you know, it’s the facts, so just tell the truth,” he said. “And I haven’t met any politician who doesn’t acknowledge where we’re at in graduation rates, who doesn’t acknowledge the fact that we’re so high on the bad lists and so low on many of the good lists.”

The members of his audience asked questions that dealt with federal/ state school relations and whether some of the things imposed by federal requirements work well for the school district, making clear that federal requirements play a big role in what happens in local schools.

Though Nevada has long received federal education money, it has never been much. It has seldom, if ever, been higher than a single-digit percentage of the amount Nevada spends on education, and usually low single digits, which is all the more remarkable because the state’s investment in schools is small. Yet because the state accepts those small federal amounts, it is forced to accept the strings that come attached. Thus, the federal government gets a lot of control for a very small investment.

Martinez is more concerned with the small local investment in education.

“People are so used to doing more with less,” Martinez said. “You know, I’ve been here now five years. This is my fifth year in Nevada, and I have a lot of respect for the communities in Nevada because I think that’s just part of the DNA here. The challenge I find, though, is that if we want to set a strong vision, whether it’s for education or other areas of the state— economic development, social services net—most states, they’ve learned that you can’t do that without investment of resources. And frankly, it is a little bit of frustration for me but, again, the best I can do is push what our vision is

and advocate for our children and our community.”

One of the difficulties educators must deal with these days is myths that everyone “knows” are true, many of them created by news coverage, about education—that parents and children are fleeing public for private schools (they’re not), that schools are violent (they’re not), that major corporations use financial incentives to motivate their employees (most don’t), and schools should do the same. These myths often have an impact on policy, as when—after the cluster of 1990s school shootings—large amounts of education money were diverted to security, though schools remained overwhelmingly safe. After the Sparks Middle School shooting, the Poynter Institute cautioned journalists (see Upfront, facing page) against exaggerating the influence of bullying on the school environment.

Martinez said he needs to do public education on this kind of faulty information.

“One of the purposes of these types of meeting [at the Harrah’s museum] is to answer questions that parents ask so that we can try to just give facts,” he said. “So I think for us, the way that we try to combat it, there’s always going to be perceptions, sometimes myths—whether it’s ‘common core,’ whether it’s issues around discipline, bullying, etcetera— one of the goals is to just give more information to parents. Our biggest

enemy around myths and perceptions is there’s not enough information. And so that’s one of the goals for these events. That’s the way we fight it. I don’t know if it gets in the way of the job as much as I see it as part of my responsibility to make sure that we provide parents and children the right information.”

While most of the post-shooting attention has been on students and parents, teachers had already been conscious of the risks of guns in schools and had pushed through their organizations for more protections. In the aftermath of the Sparks incident, Martinez has had to deal with morale, and he thinks teachers have been heartened by what they saw happen in the community.

“Well, you know, with this tragedy that’s happened, of course, it’s incremental. I mean we’re—the healing process is going to be a long one—and so we’re slowly helping the school district get back to normal. Overall in the district and the county, we’re still struggling with it. But I will tell you that also I have seen the community come together and our schools have come together. It’s amazing to me to see the kids from other schools [than Sparks Middle] and the things … they’ve sent, you know—posters with all the kids signing, showing their support. So it’s a tragedy, but I’m hopeful that the community will be stronger coming out of it.” Ω

A few weeks ago, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) made the decision to list the bi-state population of sage grouse as threatened. Now, they, the state of Nevada, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), conservation groups and others are working on a plan for Nevada should the greater sage grouse, also known as the sage hen, be listed in fall of 2015.

The bi-state population of sage grouse is one of two distinct population segments (DPS) that exist of sage grouse. The bi-state population’s habitat is separated from the larger population of sage-grouse, making it a DPS. “The bi-state is an area of about 1.8 million acres in California and Nevada,” said wildlife ecologist John Tull. “About 500,000 of those acres are in Nevada.”

The rest of the sage grouse population is called the greater sage grouse and exists in 11 states in the West, including Nevada. FWS’s decision to list the population is in a period for comment until the end of December. After comments and suggestions are made, FWS will begin working on its plan for the bi-state sage grouse.

“Then they incorporate management guidance that includes designations for critical habitats, as well as, a whole set of regulatory permitting requirements,” Tull said. “That all plays out over a period of maybe nine to twelve months, so next fall the bird will be officially listed as threatened.”

The main thing the state, FWS, BLM, conversation groups and others are now working on is figuring out how to handle the greater sage grouse, which may be listed as threatened or endangered by fall 2015. If things do not change, FWS will likely list this population. The largest portions of the greater sage grouse population are in Nevada and Wyoming, with about 30 percent in Nevada.

“The thing that’s unique about Nevada is that the majority of our land is public land … therefore most of the sage grouse habitat is also on public land,” Tull said. “So we don’t have the tools that Wyoming has necessarily where they can develop these public/private partnerships. … Nevada struggles to pay for much of anything as a consequence, like some of these big land management plans.”

BLM also recently proposed new management regulations for all its land in range of the greater sage grouse. These regulations would place restrictions on mining, energy development, power lines, recreation and other things in areas with greater sage grouse. This proposal is also in a period for comment, and comments will be taken until Jan. 29.

There are many economic concerns in the above-mentioned industries, rural communities and others if the greater sage grouse is listed, and if Nevada does not make changes now to prevent the listing’s necessity or to prepare for it, there could be dire consequences.

“Nevada has a pretty unique history in terms of coming up with relatively pragmatic, practical solutions around both development interests and conservation,” Tull said. “We would want to see that the economic interests that are at play be able to continue to work in Nevada, so we don’t suffer anymore in terms of our economic downslide. I think we’re recovering, but it’s been slow. And sage grouse, if they’re listed, and we don’t do anything, many things would probably come to a screeching halt.” Ω

visit to Virginia City on a Saturday in September thrusts you into an elaborately costumed event of fantastical visual proportions— even for the notoriously quirky Wild West town of Virginia City.

A parade is just wrapping-up, which isn’t unusual for the streets on a weekend. But this was no ordinary Virginia City historic parade with mufflers and donkeys.

Look to the left. Participants wander the streets in Victorian garb. Look to the right, a giant mechanical land-based submarine fish—the Nautilus—has just finished wheeling down the main street, firing water from its harpoon water cannon while blasting techno beats, intermixed with the occasional sounds of a working submarine—the ping of a radar, the ring of a diving alarm. And the Victorian garb of the parade participants typical to the history-rich town has been seemingly sucked through a time machine. Those mufflers have been transformed to rayguns.

Futuristic embellishments like aviation goggles and clockwork gears, melded with imaginative inspirations like metallic fairy wings and light-up gadgets, have been fashioned to classic 19th century garments to which various alterations have been made. Modest, floor-grazing skirts typical of the time period have been replaced by short, crimson versions overlaying black fishnet stockings. Bird-beaked masks constructed from leather, reminiscent of A Clockwork Orange, cover select faces, adding to the dream-like scenario.

Suddenly, amid the applause of the parade’s crowd, you hear the shouts of a protest. As a league of belly dancers shake their way down the street, matching the sway of their exposed hips to the beat of accompanying Middle Eastern drums, a group of Victorian “purists” shield their eyes and yell out in response to the seemingly risqué dancers, “Close your children’s eyes! Don’t let your husbands look!”

You rub your eyes and blink hard.

You follow the elaborately garbed denizens up the hill to Piper’s Opera House, where the scene only becomes more surreal.

This is not a drug-induced hallucination or a trippy dream. You’ve stumbled upon the sci-fi counterculture of steampunk, and this is the local chapter High Desert Steam’s Third Annual Victorian Steampunk Ball. Welcome. Costumes are admired, not required.

HIGH DESERT STEAM High Desert Steam, a local group of steampunk enthusiasts, got its start in 2010 with the origination of the Victorian Steampunk Ball. The ball was conjured up in response to the need for a grand finale to Sacramento Steampunk Society’s annual steam engine train ride. In the past, the Sacramento group would invite the Reno costume crowd along to celebrate their shared interest in steam engines by riding the V&T railroad from Carson City up to Virginia City, where they’d then wander around, take a few pictures and call it a day.

“It felt anticlimactic,” Willie Puchert, one of three Victorian Steampunk Ball founding members and co-chair to High Desert Steam, says of the decision to put on a ball to complement the steam train ride.

The inaugural ball was simple, a scaled down version of the live bands, organized dancing, vendors and performances that it features today.

Hosted at Piper’s Opera House, it had the provided historic setting for support.

“It was pretty minimum,” recalls Lauren Reeser, the original chair of the ball. “There was only prerecorded music and buffet tables—it was pretty bare bones, a rough draft. But people came and dressed up.” She’s also founder of Great Basin Costume Society and owner of online retailer American Duchess Historical Footwear.

About 150 people dressed up for that first ball, and High Desert Steam has seen that number increase since, climbing to 250 the following year, and this year topping out at nearly 350, a number that could have been higher if the event hadn’t reached capacity.

“This year we sold out,” Puchert recalls. “We had to send a media advisory out saying please stop publicizing it because we couldn’t go over capacity at Piper’s.”

While High Desert Steam and steampunk may seem as though they just dropped out of the sky from an airship, the term “steampunk” dates back to the late 1980s, with its roots in

sci-fi literature. And although the word, devised as a means to describe speculative Victorian era fiction, may not have been used previously, the genre itself can be linked back as early as 1870 with the often steampunk-designated Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. That’s the when, but as for the where the term came from, writer G.D. Falksen offers some insight. Falksen, who has written novels in the genre, as well as penned essays for events such as the Steampunk Art Exhibit at the Museum of the History of Science at Oxford, has become a face of steampunk thanks to speeches at multiple countercultural events.

(Search Wikipedia for “steampunk,” and yeah, that’s him in the picture wearing a mechanical arm—no big deal.) He explains the “steam” part over email correspondence.

“Steam is indicative of the industrial 19th and early 20th centuries, and it’s essentially used as a shorthand for industrial age technology,” he writes. “And the reason for that period’s technology is that it is so similar to our own, and yet it’s still less advanced, which makes it fascinating.”

And as for the punk? Mary Crawley, the third founder of the Victorian Steampunk Ball and head of High Desert Steam, says it relates to the subculture today: “Punk implies a moving away from the norm, and in Western Victorian England, you wouldn’t wear the stuff

we’re wearing, you wouldn’t do the things we’re doing. We’re wearing corsets on the outside, showing our ankles. ... We consider ourselves modern, but we’re looking back at this past because it was elaborate. It made the world a more formal, beautiful place. But we’re not going to go back there and deal with the classism, the racism, and the sexism—punk pulls us out of that. We’re not following the rules, and punk doesn’t follow the rules.”

THINK FANTASTICALLY, STEAM LOCALLY Part of the ball’s appeal, aside from the ideal setting, is the unique aspects its organizers have brought to the dance floor. One in particular is the addition of the simplified version of square dancing: contra dance. Keeping in tradition with its early English roots, contra is a called dance form, but there is little to no footwork, and it’s performed in long lines with quick and multiple partner switches.

“It’s easy for people who haven’t done any dancing,” Crawley explains of her rationale for meshing the dance style into the steampunk world. “It’s quick to learn. … You can still do contra wrong, but people just laugh. Steampunk is so informal and so unregulated that I thought contra dance would be great.”

Tapping into Sierra Contra Dance Society’s local community, Crawley acquired the traditional Appalachian bluegrass band 6 Mule Pile-Up, a main fixture on the contra dance scene, to play at 2011’s ball. Despite being novices to the steampunk culture, they matchedup so well they were asked back for this year’s round, and are already tagged for 2014.

“We play old time music which is from the Victorian era—but we don’t have much in the realm of futuristic flair,” says Andy Knust, bass player of 6 Mule Pile Up. “We didn’t know anything about steampunk when Mary first contacted us … but we did some research and pulled some costumes together for the first year. This past September we had a better idea of what to prepare for, and we improved upon our costumes. … It’s a lot of fun because we get to be in an old opera house, and it’s not too hard to imagine that we’re transported to some Victorian sci-fi scene.”

Along with local bands being brought into the steampunk craze (local Slow Djinn Fez is also a ball fixture), local retailers are also seeing the effects of the subculture and High Desert Steam’s annual ball’s growing popularity. Clothing and costumes boutiques like Melting Pot World Emporium and PolyEsther’s Costume Boutique have taken notice and responded accordingly. The Melting Pot’s current website features an ad on its homepage for its Steampunk items, which include goggles and dust-masks. And PolyEsther’s enthusiastically participates in the subculture’s rise via custom costume design for not only the ball, but steampunk-themed parties and weddings.

“In the last year, we have designed three steampunk weddings,” says Esther Dunaway, owner and designer at PolyEsther’s. “That’s kind of a big deal as far as revenue goes.”

In regard to the ball’s specific revenue effects: “We do a lot more sales on accessories because a lot of steampunkers like to make their own costumes,” Dunaway says of steampunk’s DIY element. “Even though [steampunk] has been around for awhile—Reno has recently really embraced it.”

Dustin Bacon, High Desert Steam member and director of 2014’s Victorian Steampunk Ball, agrees with Dunaway’s observation of the local steampunk scene’s spike, particularly in reference to the ball’s ever growing attendance.

“There’s been a significant jump between each [ball],” Bacon says. “I have no doubt that it’s going to continue. The momentum is still building.”

Perhaps contributing to steampunk’s local popularity are its close ties to the fellow DIY costume-crazed culture of Burning Man. The aforementioned Victorian Steampunk Ball parade star, the Nautilus—an art car designed

by Oakland-based artist collective Five Ton Crane—was originally intended for use at the Black Rock Desert’s annual event. The hydraulically driven submarine serves as a testament to the perfect couple that steampunk and Burning Man make.

Along with the Nautilus, other steampunk inspired installation vehicles such as “The Treehouse,” also designed by Five Ton Crane, and the three-story Victorian house on wheels the “Neverwas Haul,” designed by Obtainium Works, made great impressions at Burning Man, where the DIY society-of-the-future theme runs rampant, and goggles and dust-masks are a necessity, not just a fashion statement.

technologies and change them into something fantastic,” Bacon says.

In its second year, the expo is just getting started. Bacon and fellow High Sierra Steam members help build awareness for it by using other local events which fall before it. And they do so in pure steampunk style.

At a recent craft fair, a friend’s stand got a steamy make-over when Puchert and a few fellow steampunkers arrived in full costumed attire and proceeded to host a flash mob tea party—providing sites as well as sales for the stand. And at this year’s Earth Day at Idlewild Park, Bacon decided to take advantage of the event’s supplied crowds.

“I was promoting the expo and dressed in a steampunk inspired outfit,” Bacon explains.

“A lot of people approached me wanting to know why I was dressed like that and wanted to compliment [the outfit], saying they had

heard about steampunk, but had never seen it up close.”

As for the common response Bacon receives from people on wanting to get involved and attend the events but feeling discouraged at not having the right costume, Bacon assures them that’s not a problem.

“People will say, ‘I don’t have any of those [costume pieces]—and the first thing I tell them is costumes aren’t required. Come however you want and enjoy spectating. It’s not exclusive or something you have to work your way up to to participate in.”

And the notion that to dress steampunk you have to come with an alternate identity—say, Sir Captain D.D. Cumulus or Lady Opal Nightstream, the steampunk alter egos from the TV series Portlandia’s skit on the subculture—Bacon says that character development, common to other costume cultures, is actually not the norm.

“It is an uncommon aspect of it,” Bacon explains. “You would think everybody that creates an outfit would have a persona to go along with it—but only uncommonly is that the case. Those that gravitate towards that do so out of a desire to entertain others. If you’re already sort of a natural performer you end up doing that, but it’s not the norm in the steampunk world at large. Most people use their own name. They don’t have that alter ego.”

The expo acts not only as a booster for the ball’s finances, but for steampunk’s general interest as well, encouraging newcomers to the scene to try it on for size.

The expo’s workshops are specifically geared toward people just getting into the genre, according to Bacon. They provide how-to lessons any good steampunk should know—such as shaving with a straight razor for the men, where volunteers are accepted from the audience and shaved by an instructor, and “Garters: an introduction to hosiery,” for the women, so they can learn how to create looks which are historically accurate yet merge with modern steampunk attire.

But why the need for an alternate society in the first place? Why make an effort to relive a time period where you have to break the rules, when you can achieve that by simply living in the here and now—in the 21st century, where belly dancers aren’t deemed immoral for showing a little skin? Is steampunk’s imaginary, costumed culture acting as an escape shoot? For some steampunks, yes. But not in the sense you might think. The subculture’s more extreme participants, who aren’t just “playing” steampunk once or twice a year for an excuse to dress-up, aren’t unhappy with themselves, it’s modern day society they’re attempting to elude.

“I would say, lifestyle-wise, it’s more about finding the modern, sterile aesthetic too bland and boring, so you look back to the Victorian era where the style was overblown,” Crawley explains of the “life-stylers,” who she says are the minority of those attending the High Desert Steam events.

“They want to live by a moral code that’s something from the past, where people were more courteous and thoughtful, and there wasn’t the temporary theme of today’s society where you use something once and throw it away as opposed to fixating and reusing it. But [at the same time], it’s a yearning for a different world—the Victorian time itself was somewhat brutal, with coal fires causing you to barely breath the air, and fresh out of slavery and heavy discrimination—none of that’s ideal. They want a different place in that time period—that’s why it’s steampunk. It’s a world where we live in our ideals, as opposed to what was real at the time.

And the reality of today isn’t exactly pleasant either.”

With other interpretations of the subculture relating to a future dystopian society—where the environment has often been destroyed by human overindulgence in technology brought on by the industrial revolution, hence the dust-masks, goggles and necessity of as-yet-discovered gadgets, the question of political stance arises. Is steampunk part of an environmental movement?

Falksen concedes steampunk is more about an artistic form of self-expression than anything political or environmental.

“There aren’t any environmentalist aspects in steampunk,” Falksen says. “Steampunk itself is apolitical. It’s very much focused on art and aesthetics, and its fans all have very diverse views and interests. Really, the only statement that I think is inherent in steampunk is that fashion and aesthetics need to be celebrated and preserved rather than cast aside in favor of homogenized T-shirts and jeans. … Because really, it’s all about having a good time.”

And underneath those leather bird masks and top hats, having a good time is a universal link among the steampunks gracing the grounds of the Third Annual Victorian Steampunk Ball.

Although the fashion interpretations and, heck, even the centuries from which they’re choosing to exist at the moment, may vary, they’re all there to have fun and to blow off a little steam.

And it is fun, you realize as you descend the hill from Piper’s Opera House, disoriented from the visual overload you’ve just encountered, and climb into your gasoline powered car with its flashing digital clock yelling the late night hour, it’s somewhat begrudgingly that you start the engine, and travel back to 2013. Ω

The Botanical Garden of Padua (Orto Botanico di Padova), in northern Italy, was possibly the world’s first botanical garden.

Established in 1545, it has made a profound contribution to modern science, especially in the disciplines of botany, medicine, chemistry, ecology and pharmacy.

It’s a kind of history that residents of the American West can hardly fathom, and it’s what landed the Botanical Garden of Padua a spot on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO’s) list of 981 World Heritage Sites, selected for their cultural, historical and creative importance to the world.

The Botanical Garden is one of 49 such sites in Italy—more than

any other single country in the world. And right now you can see the garden and 22 other sites as captured through the unique lenses of 14 Italian photographers, as part of the UNESCO Italia exhibit, on display at the Arte Italia mansion gallery in downtown Reno.

Featured in the exhibit are sites such as the rock drawings in Valcamonica, Venice and its lagoon, the city of Verona, the church and Dominican Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie with “The Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci, the Dolomites, the Piazza del Duomo in Pisa and Cinque Terre.

The year 2013 has been designated the Year of Italian Culture in the United States, a year-long celebration of Italy’s artistic and cultural contributions to America,

which is what prompted the development of this exhibit. Reno is one of only three U.S. stops for the show—previously it has been in Miami and Joplin, Mo.—before it moves on to Vancouver, B.C., and then returns to Italy.

Saluté RENO How does the Biggest Little City land a cultural event the likes of which is usually found in cities such as San Francisco or New York?

According to Arte Italia president Kristen Avansino, it’s a combination of the nonprofit organization’s unique focus on the marriage of visual and culinary arts, its historic location, a larger-than-average population of Italian Americans for

a city this size and the support of the E.L. Wiegand Foundation, which operates Arte Italia.

In the early 2000s, it was Avansino, the wife of a fifth-generation Italian American/Nevadan, who realized that her in-laws were among hundreds of Italian families that had come to Northern Nevada at the turn of the century to work in the logging and mining industries.

“In my husband’s family, for example, there were two sisters who married Avansinos, and they weren’t even related,” she says.

“You had families coming here, living side by side, one generation after another, loving the country and buying acreage to settle here, particularly in the Old Southwest and in Sparks. … The mountains and verdant valleys were obviously

Since its opening, it has hosted more than 47,000 visitors, including more than 2,000 culinary class students and 21 visiting chefs. All art exhibits are free to the public, and tuition for cooking demonstrations is $50, for which attendees meet and watch master chefs prepare the traditional four-course Italian dinner, which they enjoy paired with wine from the chef’s region of origin.

A map on display in the kitchen features a mark for every region that has been represented by a chef at Arte Italia. “Our goal is to find regional chefs who continue to produce traditional, regional cuisine,” says Avansino, explaining that they steer away from fusion and nouveau styles, focusing on authentic methods and flavors of the regions.

“We also are interested in chefs who are devoted to a demonstration of the process. It’s one thing to be an expert and show you a platter of OPINION

exquisite food. It’s another thing to back off from that bottom line and methodically, for our guests, show how that exquisite food comes into being.”

This means that translation is often required—provided by culinary consultant and board member Ivano Centemeri, executive chef at the Eldorado Hotel Casino.

“Ivano is vital to the success of our program,” says Avansino. “Not only does he serve as translator if necessary to convey the expression of the chefs, but he has access to food suppliers, in case we have chefs— which we have—who demand certain delicacies in the preparation of their food. We just had some chefs from outside Florence whose menu included several meat items that are common in Tuscany but not so common here—for instance, a certain rabbit. Ivano can track those down for us.”

Arte Italia features four to six chefs per year, spaced at fairly regular intervals, and each chef teaches 4-5 classes. There is usually a short waiting list for classes, but most of those waiting can be accommodated in the next class or two.

Avansino explains that the Wiegand Foundation covers all costs for the chefs and foods, and tuition costs are then turned into charitable donations to local Catholic organizations. To date, Arte Italia has donated roughly $80,000 to community organizations such as St. Vincent’s Dining Room and a Bishop Manogue High School arts initiative.

Avansino says that the visiting chefs often are pleasantly surprised by the size and condition of the kitchen, stocked with top-of-the-line equipment and tools.

“The chefs are treated royally and can’t get enough of the Nevada experience,” she says.

And she adds that the classes often bring nostalgia to the guests.

“I can’t begin to tell you how many people enroll in the classes and then say, ‘Oh, I remember my grandmother making that dish!’ It’s one anecdote after another. And for younger people, they envision a time past, and I think they are sparked with the notion that if they have a family, they’d like traditions like these to become of part of their families.”

For the UNESCO Italia exhibit, alongside each photographed site is a plaque that indicates which of Arte Italia’s visiting chefs has hailed from that region, which helps to round out the unique celebration of that region on display. Ω

attractive, the families prospered, they determined this was home and they stayed here.”

Avansino says she has seen progress erode much of that history, and, working as executive director of the E.L. Wiegand Foundation, she spearheaded the formation of Arte Italia in 2008, the mission being to further the Italian traditions that were expressed in Northern Nevada since those earliest days, and which still are in some respects.

The Wiegand Foundation immediately began looking for a location, and set its sights on the historical Joseph Giraud House, built in 1914 and designed by architect Frederic DeLongchamps, which was the first property listed on the Reno Register of Historic Places. It had lapsed into disrepair after housing a series of failed restaurants. The Wiegand Foundation purchased the neoclassical building and spent two years refurbishing it, adding two museumstyle art galleries and a commercial, state-of-the-art demonstration kitchen that can accommodate a master chef and up to 32 guests.

Arte Italia fulfills its mission through a two-pronged approach to Italian culture: bringing in exhibits of visual art that capture the history, talents and spirit of Italian culture, and by offering cooking demonstrations by master chefs from around Italy who showcase the unique flavors and methods of their regions.

Liberty Fine Art Gallery First Thursday is a staple event at the Nevada Museum of Art. With live music curated by radio station KTHX and beer from Great Basin by Brad Bynum Brewing Co.—not to mention the art in the galleries—it’s been a reliable monthly event bradb@ for years. Other local galleries and businewsreview.c om nesses have started timing their art openings and gallery receptions to also happen on the first Thursday of every month.

On Nov. 7, for example, this month’s first Thursday, Never Ender Boutique and Art Gallery, Java Jungle coffee shop and Liberty Fine art Noble Pie Parlor pizza joint, among other Gallery is at 100 W. places, all had art openings. But perhaps the art gallery that benefits most from hosting its artist receptions on First Thursday is Liberty Fine Art Gallery, next door to the NMA. The gallery opened on Aug. 15 last year. There’s one large gallery space, as well as three attached smaller galleries, and, as of a couple of months ago, a new medium-sized gallery.

So there’s a lot of gallery space, but it’s run as a collective among 14 active artists, so no problem filling it. There’s a diversity of art that might appeal to a variety of tastes, though most of it is fairly accessible. Liberty Fine Arts Gallery is somewhere between a bulk, commercial art gallery and an academically-oriented gallery.

“We’re selling work,” says artist Rich VanGogh, who manages the gallery. “And not just to our friends, but throughout the community.”

The November exhibition, 2nd Year, 2nd Gear, features work from the 14 artists in the collective as well as work by guest artist Judy Hilbish, whose series Mona-Opoly recasts Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” as a variety of figures from history and fiction, like Albert Einstein, George Washington and Darth Vader.

Gallery artist Richard Wells is fluent in a couple of different art styles. A gallery visitor might see two of his pieces hanging next to each other and not realize they were made by the same artist.

“I’ve always worked in two very different directions—abstraction and almost photorealist figuration,” he says.

His mixed media art includes representational works and abstract works of geometric shapes. He credits his background in theatrical stage design for his strong sense of spatial composition Jill Glenn also uses a variety of media to create fantastical, nearly Suessian landscapes.

“When you look at a painting, you should want to enter into it—to engage with it, make up stories about it,” she says.

Gina Breslow’s works in the gallery are giclées—digital prints—of her landscape

paintings. She modifies many of the prints, sometimes with specific recipients in mind. The landscapes depict idyllic scenes, like Greek coastal towns.

Grant Miller is a psychiatrist and former instructor at the University of Nevada, Reno. He’s also a sculptor, a fabricator of metal sculptures, sometimes made from found objects, other times from stainless steel.

He creates minimalist, elongated forms, narrow steel sculptures that stand six or seven feet above the ground. One is called “Meerkats,” because the three tall pieces of steel look like a mob of giant meerkats scanning the horizon. Another, called “Six Feet Under, Two Feet Above,” is two long pieces of steel that, from certain angles, looks like a pair of flailing legs.

His work often has an understated sense of humor, which is relatively rare in the context of minimalist art.

“It leaves a little for your brain to do,” he says. Ω

I invited my friend Brett to head out to Somersett and check out Babe Matteri’s with me. I called it late by K.J. Sullivan lunch, he called it senior citizen dinner—like there’s anything wrong with having a meal at 3 p.m. so I could get home to enjoy my programs and be in bed by 7.

When we arrived, we were greeted warmly while I sheepishly looked at the ground and requested if it

On our waiter’s recommendation, we decided to go with a bottle of Tre Done Barbera ($32). The wine was excellent. The flavor was smooth and rich, and it took a lot to not finish the entire thing off before the food arrived. Luckily, the Caesar arrived along with a plate of toasted sourdough bread. There was oil and balsamic on the table for dipping, but why bother when Babe Matteri’s serves the bread with garlic parmesan butter. The butter was creamy and garlicky, and I basically started eyeing everything to see what I could spread on it. The Caesar had a nice flavor but was slightly overdressed. The split salad was more than enough for both of us.

When our entrees arrived, I was pleased with the large raviolis placed in front of me. They were stuffed with Portobello mushrooms, spinach and cheese and lay in a bath of brown butter. I loved the flavor of the raviolis, but I felt there was actually too much butter in the dish because it masked the flavor of the pasta a bit.

Brett’s humongous Angus steak (12 ounces) was perfectly cooked and tasted amazing. This was probably one of the best steaks I’ve had. He added sautéed mushrooms that were tender and plentiful. The steak also came with a side of vegetables and mashed potatoes, which were all fine, but the potatoes were a bit runny. The steak was so good that the issues with the potatoes seemed minor. Brett and I ate every bite off our plates.

When we finished, the chef came out to speak to us. He was very gracious and said that Babe’s is going through some changes in the menu and confirmed that initially Babe Matteri’s was an Italian restaurant, but it’s trying to expand the menu to offer more of a variety. I think the changes are working because I enjoyed just about everything about my meal at Babe Matteri’s, and I would definitely come back again. Ω

was possible to have dinner this early. Luckily, they were more than happy to accommodate this request and led Brett and me to a booth.

As it was late for lunch and early for dinner, we basically had the place to ourselves, which gave me a chance to appreciate the beautiful interior that’s decorated in dark woods, red accents and old pictures of San Francisco. The space is upscale casual and divided into three sections with the bar in front and restaurant in back. Behind the restaurant is a gambling area closed off from the restaurant.

For whatever reason, I believed that Babe Matteri’s was an Italian restaurant—my age catching up to me I guess. The menu offers many more options than simply Italian. Fish and chips, burgers, seafood and pork chops were just a few options available. I was in the mood for Italian food, so I went with the mushroom and spinach raviolis ($14.95), which were listed as being house-made. I also decided to start with a Caesar salad ($6.25) and asked them to split it between Brett and me. He decided to go with the Black Angus steak ($21.95).

THROUGH THE SCARY AT LEAST FOR NOW, THIS IS THE LAST INSTALLMENT of Through the Scary.

For those of you who may have taken a moment to read Through the Scary these last several months — thank you.

For those of who shared your stories, your fears, your secrets, your successes — thank you.

In the years that I was suffering the hardest with my son’s addiction, the thing I found most unhelpful was when I confided in someone, and they said something like, “Oh yeah, that happened to my cousin. He died.” Obviously this was, at best, a thoughtless thing to say. Thus began my desire to share success stories, big and small.

When I look back on the stories that were shared with me, here are the common threads: Parents: Watch your children closely. Trust your intuition. Be a parent, not a friend. Don’t contribute (give your children or their friends drugs/drinks). Get help fast if you suspect a problem.

Hammer and cheese Thor: The Dark World You can smell the fresh paint on Marvel holiday toys while watching Thor: The Dark World, an enjoyable yet strictly commercial seasonal entry in the Marvel cinematic universe behemoth.

The latest installment is a step back from Kenneth Branagh’s goofy and grand first franchise installment, Thor. While not likely by to piss off superhero film fans, this sequel Bob Grimm from director Alan Taylor is not going to blow many minds away, either. It’s a semib g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m efficient placeholder flick moving us towards the next Avengers movie, due out in 2015.

Chris Hemsworth returns as that incredibly handsome man with long hair, a big hammer and impossibly silly dialogue. After the events of The Avengers, he’s off fighting a war in some land seemingly named after a Sigur Ros album, while Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is trying to date new dudes back on planet Earth.

Addicts: Ask for help and be willing to receive it. Fall down, get back up again. Where there is life there is hope. Guilt will send you back to addiction; learn to forgive. Give back.

I learned that it’s not about a specific rehab or facility, or a specific 12-step, or even a specific god. It’s true that for each of us the path Through the Scary is different. That’s what makes it so hard - there is no one remedy. But flip side is that there are many remedies, so one is sure to work for you!

As for Thor’s bad brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston, owning it), he’s doing dungeon time in Asgard (a land seemingly named after a mini rock opera by Rush), basically in trouble for what he did to New York City.

Things come to a head when ancient villain Malekith (Christopher Eccleston looking silly in a lot of makeup) awakens from his slumber and seeks out a powerful dark force called the Aether. With this power harnessed, Malekith looks to cause some deep trouble during an event called the Convergence of the Nine Realms, which sounds like it could be the title of a secret third side to Yes’ Close to the Edge album. OK, I’ll stop making progressive rock jokes.

Jane inadvertently gets herself deeply involved in the universe-threatening activities, and Thor takes her back to Asgard, where she meets the parents, Odin and Frigga (Anthony Hopkins and Rene Russo).

Odin wants his son to become king and marry a goddess, as most kings of the universe would want of their spawn, while Frigga seems indifferent and just happy to have some girl time.

As Loki, Hiddleston might actually be out-cooling Robert Downey, Jr. at this point as far as the Marvel universe goes. He’s a great talent, able to play a malicious bastard that we strangely find ourselves rooting for.

When Thor must call upon his nasty sibling for help in fighting Malekith, it’s one of those “Oh, goody, goody!” moments that will have you rubbing your hands together with a sly grin on your face, perhaps embarrassing and confusing the person sitting next to you in the theater.

Minus Hiddleston’s excellent work as Loki, Thor: The Dark World wouldn’t be much of anything. Hemsworth is capable enough in the lead, but he’s starting to feel like more of a supporting player in Thor movies.

I have read some fan chatter naysaying the relationship between Jane Foster and Thor, declaring that they have no real reason to be pining for each other. Here are a couple of good reasons: Thor is played by Chris Hemsworth, the most handsome man on Earth, and the tremendously beautiful Natalie Portman plays Jane Foster. I, for one, see no further explanation for why these two would want to hook up, leaving behind their thrones and jobs to see each other naked.

Makes sense to me.

The credits, in keeping with Marvel tradition, contain two additional scenes, one a few moments into the credits, and another at the very end. One of them features Benicio Del Toro, and it is very weird. The other is actually the real end to this movie, so it’s essential you stick around.

As far as post-Avengers Marvel movies go, Iron Man 3 is far superior to this one because it did new things with its character and messed around with the format. Thor: The Dark World is worth seeing, but the hammer has lost a bit of its heft. Ω

12 Years a Slave

A film based on the true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man living in upstate New York before the Civil War who was abducted and sold into slavery. This latest effort from director Steve McQueen is a towering achievement, one of the year’s bravest and most uncompromising films. Chiwetel Ejiofor is a lock for an Oscar nomination as Northup, forced to work on cotton plantations, one of them run by the despicable Edwin Epps, played by Michael Fassbender in a vicious and brilliant performance. McQueen goes right at his topic, showing slavery for the horror it was, and Ejiofor puts a character on the screen that you will never forget. If you were one of the few people who saw 2011’s Pariah, you know that Adepero Oduye is a stellar actress, as she further proves here as Eliza, a woman sold into slavery and taken from her children. Relative newcomer Lupita Nyong’o is equally heartbreaking as Patsey, a victim of Epps’s sick abuse. The movie is shocking, violent and unrelenting in its mission to show this country in its very worst, most shameful days.

It’s about time somebody had the guts to make a movie like this one.

Bad Grandpa

Johnny Knoxville has tried to parlay his Jackass fame into an acting career, and he hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire.

So, because huge paychecks are tempting, he has returned to the Jackass well numerous times with three official movies, and his body has paid a tremendous toll. The man has thrown himself into the path of buffalos and bulls to score good laughs and, oh man, has he gotten those good laughs. As big as those checks can be, internal bleeding and broken limbs lose their luster after a while. So now we get this, a sort of Jackass movie that has a narrative mixed into hidden camera stunts. It’s very much in the tradition of Borat. Knoxville gets to play one part for the film, that of Irving Zisman, an over-80 letch of an old man that has shown up in past Jackass skits. He’s taking his grandson (Jackson Nicoll) across country, leading to some funny stunts that manage to shock a few. The highlight would be Nicoll dressed in drag and dancing to “Cherry Pie” at a beauty pageant, a moment when he basically steals the movie from Knoxville. Not as outrageous as the other Jackass films, but a nice way to keep the franchise going without destroying Knoxville’s body.

Captain Phillips

Tom Hanks plays Richard Phillips, captain of the MV Maersk Alabama cargo ship.

While delivering relief goods in 2009, his ship encounters Somali pirates who could give a rat’s ass about charity and try multiple times to board his ship. They eventually succeed, putting into play a crazy hostage drama that results in Phillips being taken aboard a space capsule-sized lifeboat with his captors. Hanks gives an expert performance that is just another notch in a great career. Fortifying the story with a terrifying yet somehow oddly sympathetic performance would be Barkhad Abdi as Muse, the pirate leader. One of the major strengths of this film is the relationship between Phillips and Muse, one that basically starts with Muse informing Phillips that he is no longer the captain of his own ship. Director Paul Greengrass mellows out on his shaky cam a bit, and delivers one of his best efforts yet.

Carrie

If you see this new 2013 version of Carrie starring Chloe Grace Moretz in the role that netted original star Sissy Spacek an Oscar nomination, you’ll probably walk away feeling it has more in common with Brian De Palma’s 1976 film than Stephen King’s sloppy first novel. While Moretz gives it her best shot, and Julianne Moore is delightfully nasty as Carrie’s crazed mother, director Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don’t Cry) provides very little reason for remaking the movie. And don’t go to the film hoping for a faithful retelling of King’s novel because, other than a few plot elements thrown back in that were excised from the original film, this is a straight-up remake of the De Palma movie. While some of the supporting cast is OK, the presence of Nancy Allen and John Travolta is sorely missed. The Black Prom, a sequence so terrifying in the original film, is reduced to a glossy, silly mess in this version. Don’t waste your time.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2

This is animation done with all the style and grace of a spastic colon saturated with hot sauce. While the first film in this series had a reasonable amount of charm, this one goes haywire from its start right until the finish line. Bill Hader returns as the voice of Flint, the overly excited inventor who, in the first movie, managed to use a crazy invention to inundate his hometown with giant food. Now, the machine has gone nuts, creating a race of living food including cheeseburger spiders and dolphin bananas. The film boasts an intolerably frantic pace, with a plotline that’s scattered beyond reasonability. It’s hard to follow, but it does have the occasional fart and poop joke to make the kids laugh. The only character I managed to enjoy was a jittery monkey trying to put out a sparkler, and that accounts for about 30 seconds of the film.

Don’t waste your time and, trust me, your kids won’t like it either.

Ender’s Game

Finally, Orson Scott Card’s epic novel is adapted for the big screen and, regrettably, it misses the mark. Asa Butterfield plays Ender Wiggin, a future young master strategist who is picked by a determined colonel (a craggy and fun Harrison Ford) to eventually command a crew of teens.

The hope is that the teens (including True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld), through a series of drills and exercises can eventually gain the knowledge to lead Earth in a war against an insect-like alien species. The premise is a good one (and a trendsetter for such franchises as The Matrix and Harry Potter, being that Card penned the novel almost two decades ago), but Butterfield is a bust in the title role, rendering much of the movie flat and lifeless. Ford is the best thing in the movie, and I hope this acts as a nice bridge for him to return to the Star Wars franchise.

It’s cool to see him doing sci-fi again. This movie feels abbreviated, with a rushed ending. Perhaps they should’ve done it as a TV miniseries, and recast the lead.

Finally, we get a big event movie that delivers the sort of thrills absent from too many large-scale movies promising big things this year. If you see this movie, you’re going to have a cinematic trip like no other.

This is what going to the movies is supposed to be about. I sound like a movie critic quote machine, and I don’t care. In her first true blue science fiction role since Demolition Man, Sandra Bullock puts herself through the ringer as Ryan Stone, an astronaut on her first space shuttle flight. Her mission commander, played by a charismatic and calming George Clooney, ribs her about her upset tummy as he flies around space in a jet pack while she works tirelessly on the Hubble. Space debris comes their way, and an incredible survival story/adventure is underway. Director Alfonso Cuaron has put together something here that will always be remembered and talked about. This is truly a landmark film.

In a movie that features almost no dialogue, Robert Redford delivers some of his best work ever as a man trying to survive a shipwreck in the Indian Ocean. While sleeping in his yacht, Redford’s character (simply called “Our Man” in the credits) is abruptly awakened by the feel and sound of a floating cargo bin crashing into his boat’s side. What follows is over 100 minutes of watching Redford solve problems and fight to stay alive. Much credit goes out to the legendary actor, and relative newbie writer-director J.C. Chandor (Margin Call) for making this compelling from start to finish.

You’ll be surprised by how gripping the sight of a man simply trying to repair his boat can be.

Redford looks like he put himself through the ringer in this one, and the results are well worth it. His character gets no real backstory, and other than one loud expletive, a couple of radio transmission attempts, and a quick beginning narration, we never really get to hear his voice.

No need for vocals. Redford does it all with his face in a performance for which he will always be remembered.

One time at band camp Muzic Fuze When Tim Lake and Kyle Collinsworth set out to open Muzic Fuze, they wanted to make the place feel as much by Clint Demeritt like a community center as it did a music store.

“We want people to come here and feel comfortable, feel like they can walk in here and act like a goofball and not be judged,” Collinsworth said.

In the very back of the store is a room big enough to accommodate a small rock concert. Basses, guitars, two sets of drums—one electronic— and a djembe clutter one end of the auditorium for people to try out and play with.

“This is our gear and it’s open to be used,” Collinsworth said. “We encourage people to come in and play on the gear. I know a lot of times you walk into a music store, and it’s quiet, and you’re not sure if you should touch it [the instruments] or make noise.”

“We want them to come back here and play,” Lake added.

“That’s what it’s about.”

The two aren’t concerned if the instruments get broken, and when you let a bunch of 10-year-olds go wild with music, you can’t get too attached to the gear. Plenty of kids get to try out the instruments, especially during Muzic Fuze’s first music camp that took place during the autumn break. The camp ran for five days, taking students on a musical tour.

“We did drum day, voice day, we did group guitar every day, we wanted them to learn ‘Smoking Water’ as one of the little kids put it,” Collinsworth said.

The kids got lessons from the store’s instructors, and were tested on songs they learned such as “Smoke on the Water” or “Iron Man.” They also sang karaoke and wrote and recorded their own songs too. Lake said the camp went well, and they will offer it again during winter break.

He said along with the camp, they are also excited about their band service. Collinsworth equated it to youth sports programs. The store will pair students up into bands of similar skill levels and ages.

One of the instructors will coach the band for three months with weekly rehearsals. At the end, the band should be able to play two to three cover songs as well as write and perform an original song.

Lake is just about to launch the first band filled with 13-year-old rockers. A group of 10-year-olds is geared to start in November, and they are close to signing a band of 15-year-old players. Ω

They opened Muzic Fuze on Longley Lane on July 1. Lake said the store is more focused on offering services to the community than selling gear. They sell instruments but also offer lessons, guitar and off-site violin repair, music camps, and birthday parties. The staff will also help customers form a band.

To the left of the entrance is a reception desk covered with strings, pliers and other tools needed for guitar repair. Behind the desk, you’ll either find Lake tinkering with an instrument or Collinsworth waiting to greet customers.

To the right of the desk is the retail room, just wide enough to stretch out one’s arms, but long enough to hang up a few dozen guitars and the odd ukulele.

“It’s not a huge room but that’s OK—this is perfect for what we’re doing,” Collinsworth said.

The room is lit by a big window to show off the merchandise, lined with Peavey guitars and amps along with other equipment sold on commission. There’s also all the accessories needed to start off a music career.

Muzic Fuze has six teachers to guide students on guitar, bass, piano, drums, violin or voice lessons. One of the offices is also a make-shift sound studio, where students can record their own sound tracks.

STRANGERS AMONG US

The STranger Show Holland Project, in partnership with the Nevada Museum of Art and Hug High School, presents its fourth annual student art show. As part of this project, a local artist is paired with a Hug High art student and given the task of creating an original work of art using the theme “strange.” The theme has dual meanings: the artist and student have never met before and are therefore strangers, and the word “strange” has several connotations which can be applied to the artwork. The student leads the art project under the mentorship of the artist. The final products will be shown in the Holland Project Gallery and will compete for two awards—the Jury Award, which will be determined by members of Reno’s arts community and the Audience Award, which will be determined by votes placed by those who attend the opening reception. The opening reception take place on Friday, Nov. 15, at 6pm, at the Holland Project Gallery, 140 Vesta St. Hug High School’s culinary class will serve some their “strange” creations and there will be music by the Hug High Mariachi Band. The Dance TheaTre of harlem Artown continues its Encore Series with a performance by the New York-based dance company. The Dance Theatre of Harlem Company was founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook as an affirmation of the power of art to transform. At the time, the company was comprised of African-American artists who were barred from U.S. ballet companies because of the color of their skin. While DTH helped break down racial barriers, it was the commitment to artistic excellence that has kept the company going strong into the 21st century. The company will present a repertoire comprised of DTH classics as well as cutting-edge new works, including “Far But Close,” a new way of looking at how the language of ballet can be used to tell a story. Crappily ever after My husband of a year is the most selfish, inconsiderate, cold-shouldered man I’ve ever known. He’s 24. I’m 22.

He behaved similarly when we were dating, but when he proposed, he made promises to treat me better, and I believed him. Well, we pretty much only do what he wants to do. If it’s an activity for me, he’ll whine and act miserable the whole time. He often cancels our plans to hang out with his friends. On our anniversary, we had reservations at a fancy restaurant 45 minutes away.

I got ready, and he suddenly decided he didn’t want to drive there and took us to some random place nearby.

At that point, our evening meant nothing. He is king of the silent treatment and never admits fault or listens to my feelings. We’ve sought out marriage counseling, but when there’s no sex, compromise, communication or friendship, should I still hold out hope? I’m trying to because I told myself I’d only get married once.

It’s 2013. You tell people you’re divorced and they mumble, “Oh, sorry.” They don’t put you on a scaffold in the town square to be jeered by all the villagers and then make you go around with a big scarlet “D” sewn on all your clothes.

Our early 20s should be called the Age of Idiocy.

Not for all people, but for a whole lot of us, including me. Until we figure out that life’s hobby is kicking us in the teeth, there’s a tendency to just wing it and believe things will turn out OK. Well, there are things—like signing a contract to spend your life with somebody—that just shouldn’t be, uh, wung. Sure, this guy showed promise as a boyfriend—that is, he made empty promises that he’d be completely different after marriage. For future reference, anybody can say he’ll be different. Only after he consistently shows he’s different over time does it makes sense to believe him. Unfortunately, it’s hard to think so sensibly if, like many early 20-somethings, you see marriage as an express elevator to adulthood: Hop in, press the “just married” button, and get off at grownup-land, where you’ll magically become mature adults and get on with all that happily ever after stuff.

Your husband has his merits. Both of his kidneys seem to work and he has yet to express an interest in drowning squirrels. Couples therapy could help—if you had a guy who didn’t just know how to be married but cared deeply for you and wanted to learn. Your husband’s behavior, however, reflects the

lack of empathy common to narcissists. Empathy isn’t something you can train an adult to have—not to any meaningful degree. What you can do is accept that you were naive and amend your “marry only once” pledge to “marry idiotically only once.” You might also take a more positive view of mistakes. They tend to be pretty amazing teachers—providing we admit we’ve made them so we can learn from them instead of sticking around to see if we can’t make a bunch of sociopathic babies with them.

Mild kingdom My girlfriend’s love of animals is causing some tension.

She cannot watch any movie in which an animal gets hurt or dies. Telling her to remember that it’s a movie and the animal doesn’t actually die just makes her really mad. She’ll say my knowing animal suffering upsets her should be enough of a reason.

Never mind that Titanic is a movie about 1,500 people drowning in the freezing Atlantic Ocean. For some, what matters is “Omigod, did that lady’s goldfish die?” And wouldn’t you know it, there’s a site for these people, doesthedogdie.com, which details whether animals in a movie are depicted getting injured or killed and confirms that no, in Titanic, “Old Rose’s dog and goldfish are not harmed.” Phew, huh? Snarking aside, no amount of turning to your girlfriend and saying “Oh, come on, that dog has an agent and headshots!” will change her need to live in a world where Old Yeller never bites it.

There’s also a good chance that much of her upset is about what she thinks your reaction means—that you don’t care about her feelings. Try putting on a new you—telling her that you understand how hard it is for her to see animals suffer, that you’ll let her know when she can uncover her eyes when you’re watching TV, and that you’ll go alone to movies in which aliens snack on deer. This should dial back the tension so you two can snuggle on the couch together, watching humans being shot, bludgeoned and hacked to pieces. Ω

thing resembling a big red snake slithering around in your mind these days. I don’t mean that literally, of course. I’m talking about a big red imaginary snake. But it’s still quite potent. Whether it ends up having a disorienting or benevolent influence on your life all depends on how you handle your relationship with it. I suggest you treat it with respect but also let it know that you’re the boss. Give it guidelines and a clear mandate so that it serves your noble ambitions and not your chaotic desires. If you do that, your big red snake will heal and uplift you.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In my

astrological opinion, almost nothing can keep you from getting the love you need in the coming days. Here’s the only potential problem: You might have a mistaken or incomplete understanding about the love you need, and that could interfere with you recognizing and welcoming the real thing. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): The saxifrage

being swept along in a flood of meaningless distractions and irrelevant information and trivial wishes, right? I’m hoping that you have a sixth sense about which few stimuli are useful and meaningful to you and which thousands of stimuli are not. But if you are experiencing a bit of trouble staying wellgrounded in the midst of the frenzied babble, now would be a good time to take strenuous action. The universe will conspire to help you become extra stable and secure if you resolve to eliminate as much nonsense from your life as you can.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Sweetness is good. Sweetness is desirable. To be healthy, you need to give and receive sweetness on a regular basis. But you can’t flourish on sweetness alone. In fact, too much of it may be oppressive or numbing. I’m speaking both literally and metaphorically: To be balanced, you need all of the other tastes, including saltiness, sourness, bitterness and savoriness. From what I understand, you are headed into a phase when you’ll thrive on more bitterness and savoriness than usual.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

When you procrastinate, you avoid doing an important task. Instead, you goof off, doing something fun or simply puttering around, wasting time. But what if there were a higher form of procrastination?

What if you could avoid an important task by doing other tasks that were somewhat less important but still quite valuable? Here’s what that might look like for you right now: You could postpone your search for the key to everything by throwing yourself into a project that will give you the key to one small part of everything.

a hundred countries around the world celebrate an independence day holiday, memorializing a time when they broke away from another nation and formed a separate state. I encourage you to create your own personal version of this festival. It could commemorate a breakthrough moment in the past when you escaped an oppressive situation, a turning point when you achieved a higher level of autonomy, or a taboo-busting transition when you started expressing your own thoughts and making your own decisions with more authority. Vet John Faber, who says he served with the storied 101st Airborne, marched in this year’s Veteran’s Day parade in Reno. He spoke with us following the parade.

What made you march today?

Well, these guys asked me to. I’m sitting down there watching the parade, and they waved me in, a bunch of the old vets.

Every year there’s less and less vets in the parade. There ain’t very many. And walking down the sidewalks here, there’s less white-haired guys like me.

Where did you serve?

101st Airborne, tail end of the Korean stuff.

I was a gunner on a 106 recoilless rifle.

We were paratroop infantry. Instead of marching, they just dropped us. Then they dropped our equipment. Then we’d unstrap it all and drive off. It was an anti-tank weapon. It was accurate at 1,200 yards, mounted on a jeep. You could drive down the side roads, 40, 45 miles an hour and get ahead of their tank hauls and then set up. They had a .50 caliber spotting rifle on top, and you’d [fire] three-rounds zeroing it in with that, and then when tankers heard that ping of that .50 caliber on the side of that tank, they knew what was coming next—around this big around and it was accurate at 1,200 yards. The 106 recoilless sat on a Jeep, had a little U-shape right in the middle of the windshield. When you were driving down the road, you laid the barrel in there, strapped it down. When

you got set up to fire, you laid down the windshield and cranked ’er up. You sat on the side of the barrel on an old metal seat, just like on a farm tractor. And the steering wheel, the elevation, you cranked it on that and the horn button was this big around and that was the trigger.

How long were you in Korea?

Half the time I was in the military—three years. Half the time I was in that area. … I was a teenager.

How were you received when you got back?

Oh, from Korea? Damn good. … In the ’50s it was still, you know, it wasn’t even hardly eight, 10 years after the World War II, so everybody was still behind the military.

Velvet Reed The Grateful Dead really began to build its mojo in ’64 and ’65 when it was the house band for Ken Kesey’s mind-boggling series of Acid Tests.

Pink Floyd first established itself as a force when it was the house band for the ridiculously psychedelic UFO club in London in ’66. In much the same way, the Velvet Underground achieved the same kind of ignition with ultra-cool New Yorkers as the house band for Andy Warhol’s multi-media confabs known as the Exploding Plastic Inevitable in ’66 and ’67.

Yes, it’s tribute time for the great and iconic Lou Reed, the singer/songwriter/guitarist for VU from ’67 to ’70, who then went on to have a lengthy career as a solo artist for the rest of his life, which ended Oct. 27 at age 71. While the word “legend” gets flopped around a bit much in this semantically sloppy age, in Lou’s case, the word fits. He was the real deal for real.

Are you in touch with other people from your unit?

Yes. A lot of them ain’t living no more.

I’m 75. We have 101st Airborne annual reunions. They have them in different parts of the states every year. They had one [locally] years ago. The first one here was at John Ascuaga’s Nugget years ago. Then they had one at the MGM, when it was the MGM. And the last one was right here at Circus Circus. It was quite a few years ago. I can’t remember the dates. Those were the three they had in this area. Then I got lucky. I went back to Bloomington, Minnesota, for my 50th high school class reunion, and 10 days later in Bloomington they had the 101st Airborne reunion right down the highway at a different hotel. So I got them both. Ω

Then later on, after he finally scores, Lou sings about “Heroin” with an honesty that is still to this day unsettling and righteous. He’s a junkie trying to explain what this cruel ecstasy is all about, and the result is a daring and memorable work, made all the more so by the extraordinarily rockin’ and dissonant viola solo by John Cale that brings the whole thing to an uncomfortable crescendo. This is not a song that you’ll hear in the background during happy hour at Applebee’s. Featuring the simple and perfect lyric, “And I guess, I just don’t know. And I guess that I just don’t know.”

On “All Tomorrow’s Parties,” we hear the haunting, compelling voice of the German chanteuse Nico complemented by the original and unique guitar work of Reed. Another song that is effortlessly on target. And in “Venus in Furs,” Lou sings of a modern love, but it’s not exactly your standard musical romantic fare. Here, we have ermine furs, the kissing of the boot, and the tasting of the whip. Talk about a sudden blast of worldly and weary. We’ve come a long, long way from Peggy Sue and Burt Bacharach with this eye-opening track.

The first VU. Still wow. Number 13 on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Albums Ever. It’s there for a reason.

Explore it the next time you need an antidote for sitcoms. Or explore it if you just want to dig Lou Reed. Ω
