hen it comes to creating ambiance for your next event, if you can dream it, you can probably rent it. Furniture, tents, casino tables, cotton candy machines, chafing dishes and patio heaters — Chicoarea party rental businesses have made it their goal to add professionalism and personality to your party. If you’ve celebrated anything in Chico over the last three decades, chances are A&J Party Center was there. Since 1978, the family-owned rental company has been providing tables, chairs 6

and decorations for weddings, graduations, birthdays and events including community fun runs and the California Nut Festival. “Every day I come to work and it’s a party,” says Owner/President Ben Murray. “We celebrate people’s big events in their lives, anything from baby showers to 90th birthdays and 100th birthdays.” Renting can really bring your party theme to life. Nothing says “tiki party” quite like a Big Kahuna statue for your backyard pool party. And you must have a popcorn machine for an Oscars party, right? But Murray also touts

the practical benefits of renting. “It’s always going to be less expensive, and it’s better for the environment, too,” he says. “What are you going to do with 36 vases after your wedding? When you rent and return after you’ve used them, you’ve solved that problem right away.” Murray stresses it’s never too soon to reserve your rental. Even if you’re not sure, he says you can always remove items or change numbers as you get closer to the event. “If you have your heart set on something … reserve it and switch
it later, that way you’re not getting your heart broken when it’s not available,” he says. Rentals are also a great idea for entertainment at your party — think photo booths and dance floors. But if you’re looking for an activity that will get guests truly excited, Casino Party People’s Chris Cartwright says a casino night is a sure bet. Casino Party People “When you have a bunch of people at a party, you have dinner and drinks, and then it’s, ‘Now what?’” he says. “This keeps people at parties longer, intermingled and mixed, and gives them something to do.” It works like this: Casino Party People supplies Ben Murray the tables, cards, A&J Party Center chips and dealers.

Players are given vouchers to redeem for chips so they can play blackjack, roulette, craps, and poker for around three hours. For fundraisers, chips can be redeemed for raffle tickets at the end of the night, so the big winners have a bigger chance to win a prize. An avid gamer himself, Cartwright enjoys teaching people casino games in a low-pressure environment. With no actual money on the line, players have the freedom to try new games or place outrageous bets they’d never do in real life. Another departure from real life? Cartwright says the odds are stacked in favor of having a good time. “The dealers will teach you how to play, and some of the rules are changed so it’s more fun,” he
says. “We even cheat sometimes, just for fun.” When the occasion is your wedding, every detail has to be just right. For brides who are into “something old,” Kelly Peart has you covered. For three years, Peart has been renting out her personal collection of antique furniture, china, chalkboards, mason jars, cake stands, chandeliers and burlap banners as Blossom Farm Vintage Rentals. “I love anything old and charming,” says Peart, who is always treasure hunting at garage sales or on trips across the country. Her most in-demand pieces right now are her farmhouse tables created from reclaimed
wood that was once part of a chicken coop. Her website contains dozens of photos of her collection, but she much prefers for brides to come out to her showroom in Arbuckle. “I want to see what they want, we all have different tastes,” she says. “So I like to have them come out and play with me.” She’ll arrange pieces and get a better sense of the bride’s vision. Budget is always part of the conversation. “Everybody’s on a budget, but I treat them just the same,” she says, adding that she’ll advise brides on which pieces are worth a splurge (like a sweetheart table) and where to save (the gift table). Peart is happy her passion for antiques can play a small role in someone’s big day. “To see the bride so happy — that’s what makes it for me,” she says.

hether you’re looking for a princess for a tea or a pirate-led treasure hunt, Enchantment Children’s Parties has just the star power you need for your little one’s party. Trisha Wells, owner and self-proclaimed “Fairy Godmother,” shares how she has made children’s fairy tale and superhero dreams come true for the past three years.
How do you make children’s parties a blast? Each character has their niche. Most of our princesses sing, they also do etiquette and dancing lessons. The boys will do superhero training, we do Pokémon parties. [Characters]
do crafts, they do games and all the children get prizes with their games. The birthday child will get a special gift from the entertainer.
so they don’t just show up and wave, they’ll actually lead activities and interact with guests, right? Absolutely! They do the party while they’re there and you don’t have to do a thing except enjoy the experience.
What kind of reactions do the kids have? Most of the time they’re a little starstruck, so they’ll hide behind mom or dad for
a couple minutes, and then they’re all about it.
What kind of characters do you offer? Pretty much every princess you can think of, and then we have the superheroes. Pokémon has been big, so we have Pokémon trainers. We also have Santa and Mrs. Claus on the holidays. We have Star Wars characters … and we have our pirate and our pirate queen.
What ages are appropriate for your parties? Two to 10, I’d say — about Santa age.
