he Dinner Dance is back! The Farm City Celebration Committee is very excited to bring back two very popular events from the past. We are partnering with the Butte County Young Farmers and Ranchers to host the always popular Dinner Dance and combine it with the Annual Awards Reception on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Our Restaurant Program is also back in a big way, with six eateries participating for the entire month of November. The Agribusiness Bus tour has some wonderful stops planned this year on Nov. 4. Kids’ Day on the Farm happens Thursday, Nov. 5, when 650 thirdgraders get excited to learn all about agriculture, and our 11th Annual Harvest Festival on Nov. 7 at Bidwell Mansion looks to be bigger and better than ever with lots of agricultural activities for the whole family.

The Farm City Celebration Committee would like to thank you for joining us to celebrate agriculture! During this time of drought, it is essential for the consumer to understand what it takes to put abundant, safe and diverse food on grocery store shelves, and ultimately on your dinner table. We are fortunate to live in an area that has the ability to produce a wide variety of products for our consumption, but water is a vital component of a stable food supply. Labor, land, transportation, disease and pest control are also essential elements to food and fiber production. The understanding of the activities and importance of agriculture by consumers is vital to our agricultural way of life. It is a goal of the Farm City Celebration to strengthen the relationship between agriculture and the urban community, through education about agriculture, while also addressing consumers’ concerns. The Farm City Celebration is a collaborative effort by many organizations, businesses and individuals who value agriculture and, above all, want to promote a positive relationship between members of the agricultural and urban communities.

We would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who have supported the Farm City Celebration this year and over the past 35 years. With your financial support, we are able to bring together farmers, ranchers and

consumers to foster a deeper understanding of the issues between farm and city.

Our Farm City Celebration originated in 1979 when the local chapter of California Women for Agriculture (CWA) did a “tasting” of local products inside a Chico bank.

Butte County Cattlewomen was the first organization to partner with CWA to help “staff” the tastings. The events this year are made possible through the partners involved, including CWA, Butte County Farm Bureau, Butte County Ag Commissioner, UC Cooperative Extension, Butte County Cattlemen and Cattlewomen, Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park, the Chico State and Butte College agriculture programs, Butte County Young Farmers & Ranchers, and countless volunteers.

Harvest Festival

For Men & Women

Saturday, Nov. 7th, 10 am–2 pm, Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park, 525 Esplanade, Chico Kid’s Day at the CSU, Chico University Farm

Thursday, November 5th PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED California State University, Chico University Farm, Hegan Lane, Chico Local 3rd graders rotate through eight stations, learning about different areas of agriculture in a fun inter-active way.

The classes learn about many of our top crops, including rice, beef and walnuts. The California Farm Water Coalition teaches about the importance of water to all of us. At another station, the kids learn all the ag products that are needed to make a pizza, then they get a sample piece of pizza. Definitely a highlight! Farm City Celebration Agri-Business Bus Tour and Lunch Wednesday, November 4th California State University, Chico University Farm, Hegan Lane, Chico 7:00 am Cost: $40 Join us for the Agri-Business Bus Tour and Lunch. After coffee and light morning snacks at the University Farm, you’ll board a chartered bus and begin touring five local farms and agri-businesses, learning about their operations and contributions to Butte County’s agricultural industry. This year, we are excited to include Noble Apple Orchard, Mendon’s Nursery, Paradise Irrigation District, Butte College Ag Program and Spring Valley Ranch. After the five stops, you’ll return to the University Farm to enjoy a fabulous lunch featuring the nowfamous barrel chicken prepared by local farmers. Farm City rice, salad, rolls and lunch-time entertainment included. This event is always a sell-out, so be sure to get your tickets early.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, October 7th at 9:00 a.m. at the Butte County Farm Bureau office, 2580 Feather River Blvd., Oroville. For more information call (530) 533-1473.

HE HARVEST FESTIVAL IS free FOR THE WHOLE FAMILy. This rain-or-shine event has fun agricultural-related, hands-on activities, food and lots more. We truly are bringing the farm to the city for this community agriculture day. There will be tractors on display, 4-H, FFA, cattle roping, stock dog demonstrations, cow-milking, bees, a Boy Scout Rope Bridge and so much more. Come hungry, because Madison Bear Garden will be onsite to barbecue for a special event price.

We are so fortunate to have the Harvest Festival on the grounds of the Historic Bidwell Mansion. During the event, visitors can browse through the first floor of historic house! Staff and volunteers will be there to answer questions. The Visitor Center, including “The General’s Store” gift shop, exhibit hall and bathrooms will be open.

The Carriage House will also be open, displaying historic carriages and wagons.

The 2015 Farm City Celebration Restaurant Program is cookin’ all through November

T

he Farm City Celebration is re-introducing the Restaurant Program, which highlights local eateries in our community that are committed to supporting local agriculture. Farm City Celebration aims to increase an understanding of agriculture’s immense value to the urban community, and to show its importance to all who live in Chico, as well as the surrounding communities.

We are so fortunate to have a diversity of crops ranging from almonds, rice, walnuts, olives and stone fruits such as peaches, apricots and plums, to a large variety of fresh vegetables, local meats, cheeses and wines.

Restaurants and cafés are an important market sector for farmers who sell their products locally, and eating out is a great way to educate consumers about local agricultural! During this year’s celebration, you can visit the following restaurants to find a variety of dishes prepared with farm-fresh products grown right here in the North Valley. Participating restaurants include Sicilian Cafe, 5th Street Steakhouse, Bacio Catering & Carry Out, Farm Star Pizza, Root’s Catering & Restaurant and Sin of Cortez. All of these restaurants have a commitment to sourcing locally when possible to support local farmers and at the same time turning our region’s agricultural offerings into culinary delights.
