ow let’s get out for a ride! May is National Bike Month and you’ll want to save this handy pull-out guide to the host of fun bike-related activities we have ‘on tap’ here in Chico and close by. Whether you’re a serious bicyclist already, wanting to ‘up your game’ or new to it all, there’s bound to be something just right for you! As a League of American Bicyclists’ Gold level BikeFriendly City, Chico has a lot to offer for bicyclists. It is ideally suited to biking for transportation, recreation, fitness and competition. In addition to details on special Bike Month activities (most are FREE!) this Guide is filled with the information you need to make your biking experience a smooth one — where to go for resources like the Chico Bike Map, local groups, clubs and teams to join, local bike shops for a tune-up or to upgrade your ride, how to report a hazard on the road or a bike path, and most of all, how to get involved! Join the Revolution, just come on out and ride! This Guide is brought to you by Chico Velo. As a 501.c.3 non-profit organization, our mission is to encourage bicycling in our community through advocacy and education. We work closely with the city and county to improve conditions for cycling, educate cyclists and motorists about safety, and represent your interests locally and at the state level in partnership with the California Bicycle Coalition. Join us in improving bicycling in Chico by volunteering or contributing to Chico Velo programs and our Foundation, established to support local bikerelated projects and activities.

Current Chico Velo Programs Bike Valet – We provide Bike Valet parking services (always free to riders) for the Saturday Farmers Market, Thursday Night Market, Chico Heat games and many other local events to help event organizers make biking your best transportation option. KidsPedal! – We are bringing bike safety education back into local schools, by offering FREE “Get Pumped on Bikes” presentations and fun hands-on Bike Safety Rodeos teaching bike handling skills and basic traffic rules. Light Up Chico –

We purchase bike lights through local bike shops and distribute in the winter months to those who cannot afford them. Ride Rangers – At our organized Little Nippers at Seersucker Ride rides, watch for riders wearing the Velo kit with the Ride Ranger logo. Bike to School Week: May 8–12 National Bike to School Week is May 8-12 this year, and most Chico schools are on-board! Participating schools will be set up to support and encourage biking and/or walking to schools. Each day this week, all kids at participating schools who walk or bike will get a raffle ticket for daily prizes and a ‘grand prize’ drawing for $250 gift certificates to local bike shops. Participating kids will check-in at their school’s “Bike to School” table to enter the raffle. Free bike maps, fun stickers and other goodies will also be available each day.
