ith the last name Gonzales, I am often asked if I speak Spanish. I do not. Sitting at my desk writing this, I’m wearing a shirt with a Mexican catrina, designed by the local apparel company, Maldición. The shirt says “Ven conmigo, cachetón.” When people ask what it means, I get as far as, “Come with me ...” before it’s revealed that I’m a bit of a Chicana poser. As a third-generation Mexican-American, I’ve lost touch with my heritage. Every Cinco de Mayo or Día de los Muertos, I pledge to be a better Chicana. Learn the language, know the history, make grandma proud.
Here, to the readers of SN&R, I admit it: Just like this holiday, I am a hybrid. And let’s be honest — Cinco de Mayo is no more authentically Mexican than a Cheesy Gordita Crunch. But no matter your background, you can embrace this holiday in ways that deepen your understanding and appreciation of Mexican culture. This Cinco de Mayo, ven conmigo to learn about this Americanized holiday, and know the reasons you’re celebrating. By Kate Gonzales

1 Know the history First things first: Cinco de Mayo is not, nor has it ever been, Mexican Independence Day. So please, don’t say it’s Mexico’s equivalent to Fourth of July. You’re confusing the date with September 16, 1810, when the Mexican War of Independence began. The historical significance of May 5, 1862, is that it’s the day
when the Mexican military defeated the invading French Army in the Battle of Puebla. Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico compared to the United States, where people from all backgrounds celebrate with parades, music and tequila shots. Today, the holiday blurs the line between a very commercial holiday and a celebration of Mexican culture. Now that you know the roots, embrace the history of Cinco de Mayo and commemorate the day with a bit more knowledge. -K.G.
2 Make it menudo Want to up your Cinco de Mayo cultural street cred? Jump into a bowl of menudo, a traditional Mexican soup made of beef tripe (yum!), red chili peppers, cilantro, lime and onion. 4 Sounds like a fiesta
3 one Chicano’s take
Comedian Danny Cruzz is a third-generation MexicanAmerican from San Jose. When people ask about his heritage, here’s his response: “I tell people I’m a Chicano, and that means when I watch my novellas, I watch them with subtitles.” He acknowledges the Americanization of the holiday, and says the May 5 date was likely chosen by the powers that be in beer marketing because “Dieciséis de Septiembre” didn’t quite roll off the tongue like Cinco de Mayo. Snark aside, Cruzz says he thinks it’s a good thing that many Americans embrace Cinco de Mayo, because it connects cultures and promotes diversity. “[It’s] that day everybody can be Mexican,” he says. Mariachi music, known for its distinctive celebratory sound, is a staple at weddings, baptisms, birthdays and any other fiesta that calls for dancing and having a good time. Originally from the Mexican state of Jalisco, the sound varies from region to region, but all bands include violins, trumpets and guitars and feature fast-paced songs and ballads. According to Alex Martinez, mariachi music is popular for the simple fact that it’s

For Martinez, vihuela player for the Sacramentobased Mariachi America band, the music is also a connection to both family and Mexican culture. “I started to do this when I was 13 years old with my family. My father played music, I play music, my son and my daughter play music,” he says. “They were born here in the United States, but they love Mexican music.” -A.S.
5 Dance like an aztec Danza Azteca blends Mexico’s pre-Columbian and Christian roots into a physical celebration of nature, religion and tradition. Typically performed at festivals and on days of worship, the dance expresses the connection between nature and humanity and embodies the artistic and cultural spirit of Mexico. Dancers don elaborate costumes topped with headdresses of brilliantly colored feather plumes and dance to beating drums
and flutes while keeping their own beat with ankle rattles made of seed pods or metal bells. To experience such a resplendent performance in person, visit Sacramento’s Sol Collective, where dance groups perform weekly and help educate the public about Danza Azteca’s historical and cultural significance.
