2018 Chico Velo BIKE MONTH GUIDE

Chico Velo Programs

hico Velo is a 501.c.3 Non-Profit organization founded in 1980 by Ed McLaughlin. The organization originally began as a bicycling club, but Ed quickly realized that the club could do more than offer amazing rides to the community. Ed had a vision to ensure safe cycling routes including bike paths, closing down southpark drive in Lower Bidwell Park to cars, a world of active transportation via bicycle, and many more. Chico Velo has continued Ed’s legacy by being actively involved in any and all legislature that involves infrastructure related to cycling. Beyond bicycle advocacy for the community, Chico Velo is dedicated to ensuring the youth in our community have an opportunity to ride a bicycle in a safe and comfortable environment. Today Ed’s legacy and vision are carried on through our current Executive Director Renee Buchan, our dedicated Board of Directors, and staff.

Trailworks: Launched in 2014, Chico Velo’s Trailworks program actively supports the creation and maintenance of sustainable and enjoyable trails in and around the Chico area. We have established a very good partnership with the City of Chico to work on and maintain trails in Upper Bidwell Park. Not to mention additional work in the Oroville area and beyond as well. We are actively seeking new partnerships and opportunities within our community to promote sustainable trail design. Volunteers are always welcome on Trail work days!

KidsPedal: Here at Chico Velo we want to make sure that every child in our community has an opportunity to experience the joy of bicycling. Through our KidsPedal program we raise funds to put on bicycle rodeos teaching basic bike handling skills and bicycle safety to K-12 students in our community. We are also working on other relationships within our community to better serve the needs of the kids in the Northern California area. For Bike Month: We are installing 6 bicycle pumps at 6 CUSD schools along with a number of events.

Bike Valet: Chico Velo offers free bike valet for cyclists at a number of local events including the Saturday Morning Farmers market in Chico, Thursday Night Market in downtown Chico, Chico Heat home games, as well as a number of other community events. By offering free bike valet services, we hope to encourage more people to ride their bicycles without fear of parking or theft. We also offer bike valet services for private events and for businesses.

Bike Safety: 7 Tips to Make the Ride a Little Better

Riding a bicycle can be an intimidating experience for a new rider. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to have a more enjoyable experience: 1.) Have your bike maintained at least once a year. Take it to a local bike shop and have a tune up done. A well maintained bike is a rideable bike.

2.) Pump up those tires! If there is only one thing you do to your bicycle, do this. Having properly inflated tires means fewer flats, a smoother ride, and a lot less effort to pedal. You should be adding air to your bicycle tires about once a week. TIP: To figure out proper inflation look at the sidewall on your bicycle tire for a number followed by “PSI”, that number is the level you should inflate your tires to, most bicycle pumps have a gauge on them.

3.) Don’t ride where you would drive. The fastest route in your vehicle, is not always the best route for riding your bicycle. Typically a block over from the main road will be a much quieter road and more enjoyable on your bicycle.

4.) Light it up! Lights are not just for the nighttime. Make yourself more visible by using daytime lights. Note: Set the light to be blinking during the daytime ride.

5.) Helmets, they really do work. A helmet can save your life. You can get a very inexpensive helmet at any chain store or a nicer one at a bicycle shop. The more expensive helmets are lighter and a little more comfortable to wear, but any helmet is better than no helmet at all.

6.) Pace yourself. When going out for a first ride, allow yourself plenty of time and choose a destination where you can take a break. Think: coffee shop, brewery, Thursday Night or Saturday Morning market (FREE Bike Valet), and/or the park.

7.) Stay in contact. If going out on a solo ride, don’t forget to tell someone where you are going or leave a note with an estimated time for your return especially if you are going out on a longer ride. Cell phones are fantastic, but they can fail when dropped while riding or not charged all the way.
