More than a million Leave voters told media they want a mulligan, a do-over. Some, irked with the status quo, had cast protest votes. Others didn’t consider or know the ramifications. Hardly any thought the majority would vote as they did.

June 24—a day late and a pound short—Google experienced a spike of UK searches on the EU, Brexit and “What happens if we leave the EU?” The U.S. has a politician like Farage. He happened to be in the UK during the Brexit vote and aftermath.

Opening his new golf resort, Trump Turnberry, he praised the turn toward independence. Or isolationism, depending on your view. Since he was speaking in Scotland, guess which view carried the day?

Donald Trump, dissembling his way to the Republican presidential nomination, has mined gold from the same vein as Leave with campaign themes of immigration and nationalism. Standing between him and the White House is Hillary Clinton. Even her primary rival, Bernie Sanders, has put aside his personal preference for the Democrats’ nominee, focusing his campaign on values propositions.

Voting your conscience is fine. Go Green if you support Jill Stein. But factor Brexit; factor Bush versus Gore versus Nader. Protest votes can leave a lot more to protest. □

Thankfully, now that the End of Life Option Act is on the books in California, it’s legal for doctors to prescribe a lethal dose of medication to certain patients looking to end their journey as peacefully and pain-free as possible.

The so-called right-to-die law is controversial, but needn’t be. That’s because it contains a number of restrictions to make sure it isn’t abused.

Only adult patients with less than six months to live—who must be deemed mentally competent—would be able to procure such medicine legally, for example. They also must be able to self-administer the life-ending drugs.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed the End of Life Option Act into law last October.

It went into effect June 9.

The rub for those seeking such medication is that, at least locally, it’s going to be difficult for them to find physicians willing to write a prescription for it. Thus far, the local medical professionals CN&R has contacted have no leads on a doctor who’s taking up the cause.

Meanwhile, at least two local hospitals—Enloe Medical Center in Chico and Feather River Hospital in Paradise—are not participating. That’s not surprising considering the history of similar aid-in-dying laws in other states. Most of those who’ve ended their own lives choose to die at home under the care of a private physician (see “Death unassisted,” Healthlines, page 12). Still, it sets the tone.

We get it. Change is scary, especially when it comes to legalized assisted suicide. But the End of Life Option Act is a humane law. Interestingly, many of the Oregonians who have qualified for and filled a prescription for the lethal medication—roughly a third of patients—end up not using them.

Still, those who seek out the medication at least have the option to hasten their deaths. Perhaps having that control is enough for some people to allow their illness to take its full course. The point is, people should be allowed to choose the terms of their own death. We have no choice coming into this world, but we certainly deserve a say in how we leave it.

Maynard is a large part of why the Golden State now has a right-to-die law. Her story sparked renewed interest in and advocacy for the movement.

Indeed, she was a pioneer. She was brave in the face of great controversy.

Now it’s time for California doctors, locals included, to be brave as well by using the state’s new law as it was intended—to help patients seeking a humane, dignified death. □

caregivers This week, the thing on the forefront of my mind is my last living grandparent, my sweet 92-year-old Italian grandfather, Albert.

He’s in the hospital. Pneumonia. And that’s on top of some other issues. He’s had congestive heart failure for years. His eyesight is extremely poor due to macular degeneration. And then, a few months ago, he had a stroke.

When I think of my grandpa, I immediately picture his broad smile and barrel-chested hugs. But these days that smile is dimmer and those hugs aren’t as tight. He’s changed a lot since my grandmother, Helen, passed away suddenly just over a year ago.

But what should I expect? The two were married for 68 years.

“Devastating” is the word that comes to mind when I think about what it’s been like for him to have lost the person he’d spent nearly three-quarters of his life with.

The two of them lived independently up until she died. Grandma was their eyes; she’d read mail and keep up with bills. She also kept them busy with social engagements. Grandpa would fix things around their immaculately kept house, tend the garden and do much of the cooking. It was a true partnership.

After my grandmother’s death, my mom began been checking in on her father regularly—with frequent trips to the San Joaquin Valley, his lifelong home—and then, after the stroke, has barely left his side. Recently, she’s been helping him get adjusted to life in an assisted-living facility. It’s been a difficult transition, one that’s still in flux. I visited Grandpa at his new place last weekend. It’s nice, but not yet home, and I’m not sure it ever will be.

Major props to those who, like my baby boomer mom, have become a caregiver to a parent or parents. It’s a stressful and oftentimes heartbreaking task. My grandfather is fortunate to have her as an advocate.

I realized that recently when I received a letter from an elderly Paradise woman who lost her husband of 30 years last spring.

That led to her losing a huge chunk of income, which has put her on the verge of homelessness. She’s desperate for a more affordable place to live on her modest income—roughly $900 a month. Thing is, she wrote, the landlords she’s found require an income of twoto three times higher than the cost of rent.

It doesn’t matter, she lamented, that she’s always paid her bills on time, has no pets or criminal record, and has a spotless rental history. And she’s not looking for anything fancy; doesn’t need a dishwasher or microwave, she noted. “Now I’m sitting here with my husband’s old room full of packed boxes and nowhere to go,” she wrote.

When you look to the editor of the local community newspaper for a way to avoid being destitute, you’re definitely in a bad way. I feel pretty helpless here. I’m not a landlord. Obviously, I have the power of words on a page. If any readers know of resources for this woman, please contact me.

Gun talk Re “Prayer isn’t enough” (Editorial, June 16): Hearing of the recent murders in Orlando certainly caused an emotional reaction. We felt heartache and misery over the lost lives, and the attendant suffering of friends and family of the victims. But it also caused some of us to think. I’d like to share my own thoughts.

First, regarding the hue and cry.

The outrage and the demand for a political solution. More gun laws! Or fewer gun laws! However you feel about guns, almost no one, including the NRA, thinks that citizens in a crowd with guns in their pockets will solve this problem.

When we rely on politicians to give us solutions, we disempower ourselves. I’ll use Orlando as an example. What if four determined people had rushed this gunman when the first shot was fired? He might have gotten off another shot or two.

But multiple murders would have been prevented. What if training and tactics were taught for this purpose to a large number of men and women?

College athletes, martial artists, anyone who exercises and is strong and fit? What if this really caught on and became a movement? So that a handful or dozens of strong, alert, motivated people likely would be present among any large crowd or assembly? This could certainly change the outlook for deranged and angry people in search of easy victims.

Perhaps I’m an optimist. But I believe there are large numbers of people who will risk their own safety, and act with courage and determination to save other lives.

on guns by buying or stealing them from someone authorized to have them in the first place.

Manufacturing guns that work only when a fingerprint or password is used will cut down on the illegal sales and use of guns.

There’s also a very dark undercurrent in the resistance to controlling our guns. Those of us who don’t trust our government to do things in our best interest and fear the confiscation of our guns by the government so that [its leaders] can enforce martial law or install a dictator. Don’t laugh! This last idea was even talked about by the framers of our Constitution. Mankind will always seek power—absolute power corrupts. Guns in the hands of ordinary citizens will prevent that from ever happening.

Harry S. Truman once commented that “a president needs political understanding to run the government, but may be elected without it.”

How was Truman able to forecast the repulsive spectacle that is currently transpiring in America? It seems insane to realize—with unrelenting horror and immense aversion—that we could possibly witness such a phenomenon in action on this rapidly approaching Tuesday following the first Monday in November.

Superdelegate on Sanders Re “Presidential oratory” (Cover story, by CN&R staff/contributors, June 9): I have been asked a number of questions about why Sanders visited Chico and the impact.

Our Congressional District 1 is 90 percent white, the highest in California.

Sanders across America did the best in white rural areas (such as four white rural caucus states, with turnouts of less than 7 percent) and that’s why he did a rally in the North State. Such rallies cost about $150,000.

The net result for Sanders was one additional delegate—four, instead of a three-three split.

Congressional District 1 gave Sanders a 58 percent margin—the highest in the state. San Francisco, the most liberal county in California, was won by Secretary Clinton with 54 percent. San Francisco is a city of white liberals, many minorities and a high number of the LGBT community, which is why she will be the Democratic presidential nominee.

When final, Clinton will win California by about 375,000 votes, including 47 out of 53 congressional districts, and Clinton will have about 255 grassroots delegates out of the 475 in California.

Older African-American voters do not respond well to old white men yelling (and waiving their arms) on their TV. Clinton won about 85 percent of the African-American vote.

WeST nILe VIRuS IS BACK

West Nile virus was recently detected in Chico when a robin tested positive for the mosquito-borne illness. It’s the first case of WNV reported in Butte County this year.

WNV is currently active in 21 counties in California, according to a press release from the Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District. As of June 24, health officials reported that 277 dead birds have tested positive for WNV statewide, compared with 102 dead birds on the same date last year.

Positive mosquito samples are up as well, from 180 to 264.

Since 2004, when WNV first arrived in the county, 208 residents have been infected with the virus; eight died as a result. The district urges residents to report suspected mosquito breeding sites by calling 533-6038.

TRAVeL AnD eXPLOITATIOn

A man from Oroville recently was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison by a U.S. district judge for attempting to travel cross-country to meet a boy for sex.

For more than two years, Jan Alan Shafer, 65, traded sexually explicit emails and instant messages with an adult posing as a 10-yearold boy from Alabama, according to a press release from the U.S Department of Justice.

The exchanges included images of child pornography. After expressing interest in having sex with the boy, Shafer was arrested in October 2014 in Oroville while attempting to board a Greyhound bus to Alabama.

On March 1, Shafer pleaded guilty to attempted travel with intent to engage in sex with a minor.

“He finds that work very satisfying,” she said. “His passion is helping people get off opiate addiction, and an opportunity came up for him to pursue that.”

It’s uncertain exactly when the county will hire Lundberg’s replacement, Almageur said.

That plan is the new iteration of Meriam Park.

Initially a project of New Urban Builders, Meriam Park is a 270-acre development of commercial and residential properties, with open space and parkland, along the west side of Bruce Road between

East 20th Street and Humboldt Road.

It received City Council approval in 2007, but the new developer, headed

by Gonzales, made enough changes to warrant fresh review by the Planning Commission. Fully authorized, following the commission’s vote June 16, construction can move forward—and will, in the next few months, scheduled through 2022.

Meanwhile, both kitty-corner and across the street on East 20th, Epick Homes’ 300-acre Stonegate project— primarily residential, some commercial— is early in the approval process. (See infobox.) If approved, it won’t be much like its neighbor.

Meriam Park Community, as the Gonzales/Grossman project is formally titled, will have both an aesthetic and business model that differs from traditional development.

The vibe will be au courant. Gonzales describes a “cultural infrastructure,” including contemporary design—“modern with an agricultural industrial flair.” The idea is to attract a mix of occupants—artisans, farm-to-table chefs, product-makers, professionals, families—sharing an affinity for Portland/Berkeley-style environs. They’ll live and/or work in a cohesive district divid-

ed into areas, which will unfurl in phases.

The Hub, occupying the southwest corner by the Cal Water Co. storage tank, is the start-up zone featuring retail, eateries and “maker” spaces for new ventures.

Thrive, in the southeast, is for commercial and office space.

Adjoining the existing courthouse will be medical facilities (north/east) and multifamily housing (west), with a park. Singlefamily houses are planned for the western portion up to Little Chico Creek; north of that greenway, senior housing. The plan also calls for two other parks, an amphitheater and an environmental preserve.

Some locations pencil out more profitably. Others—notably in the Hub—will offer below-market pricing to entice nascent innovators.

“This is not based on a pure ROI [return-on-investment model],” Gonzales said. “If things work according to our plan, the entity won’t lose money, and we’ll create economic development within Chico— and we would have accomplished our goal.

“Our goal is to be very frugal with the way we design, be very smart, but we are going to be aggressive in terms of infrastructure. We are building infrastructure ahead of the development and the demand.”

Infrastructure for Gonzales isn’t the standard building term encompassing roads, pipes and wiring; rather, it’s a holistic term that also represents the cultural build-out.

“You have to build the right types of restaurants, the right environments, the right arts—and you can’t fake that; it has to grow organically,” he said.

“That’s going to be our biggest challenge [in the Hub]: How to do you create a creative culture?”

The biggest challenge, some might say, is

pulling off a viable Meriam Park project after New Urban Builders could not.

Gonzales admits he’s not a developer or a “trained urbanist”—two job titles that would seem beneficial when spearheading an urbanist development. Yet he’s also not just a T-shirt maker; he’s a civil engineer, and he hired a professional master planner.

While he may not be a builder—he calls himself and Grossman “builders of businesses”—he feels he understands why New Urban Builders’ work stopped. He said that project fell victim to an economic downturn, not a flawed concept.

“I’m fortunate to pick the project up at this point when it’s already entitled [i.e., authorized],” he said. “Tom DiGiovanni and his team [at New Urban Builders] did much of the time-intensive heavy lifting ….”

DiGiovanni, with partners, still owns a 24-acre parcel within Meriam Park’s boundaries that Gonzales said will be developed separately but in keeping with the new project. (DiGiovanni did not return a call by CN&R deadline.)

Mike Sawley, an associate planner at City Hall, said it’s hard to tell at this point exactly how Meriam Park Community will wind up, as all that’s been vetted are “lines on a subdivision map.”

Comparing concepts, Sawley described the new iteration of Meriam Park as having “a ‘build it and they will come’ mentality and ‘it will work because …’ there will be these various levels of rents and spaces that entrepreneurs can get into at that time, knowing it may progress to a bigger, higher use with more support and success down the road.

“The older vision was more like ‘we know successful places are built a certain way’—multistory with commercial space on the first floor, flex space on the second floor, residential on the third floor—and ‘the critical thing is how they’re built …’

“They’re two philosophies kind of angling in the same direction.” □

Looks good on paper County supervisors approve 2016-17 budget, library funding without fuss not easy getting people interested in the often dry affairs local government, but public participation is vital. That’s Ithet’sof impetus for a new outreach campaign titled “I Am Butte

County.”

The campaign, which the county intends to roll out online in the coming months, includes written profiles, photographs and video vignettes of county employees. The idea is that, by humanizing the staff members who provide public services such as animal control, probation and mental health care, people will better understand the services themselves.

“We don’t do a good job of telling our story,” said Paul Hahn, the county’s chief administrative officer, during the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday (June 28). “We don’t tell our citizens who we are and what we do.”

The county wants more engagement. So, it may have been discouraging later in the meeting, when nobody at all spoke up during the supervisors’ hearing on the proposed budget for fiscal year 2016-17. After receiving no public comments—and with very little discussion from the dais—the panel voted unanimously to pass the budget, thereby concluding a relatively brief affair.

“Without a doubt, in my years of holding elected office, this is finest budget I’ve yet to see,” he said. “It covers everything and makes judicious use of the funds we have available.”

Most relevant to Chicoans, the budget earmarks money to expand hours of operation at the Chico branch of the Butte County Library.

Historically, the county has provided the library’s operating funds with help from the city, but the library has been closed on Mondays since July 2015, after the Chico City Council voted to cut $100,000 in funding.

The new budget includes funding to add one full-time assistant librarian and 14 more hours to the weekly schedule. Starting at the beginning of September, the library will be open seven days a week.

Funding the library is a drop in the bucket in the context of the coun-

ty’s $533 million budget, which is an 8.9 percent increase from fiscal year 2015-16.

It includes allocations for some big-ticket capital projects, such as $1.5 million to design the expansion of Butte County Jail, $6.4 million for a countywide radio communication system, and $2.9 million in improvements to the Neal Road Recycling and Waste Facility.

Elsewhere, the county’s Public Works Department is set to spend about $5.4 million on engineering and constructing a new bridge over Butte Creek on the Midway.

In terms of personnel, the county will add 33 new employees for a total of 2,456. Most will be in the Department of Employment and Social Services, which is adding 29 new positions, including social workers, case managers and employment specialists. The positions are permanent and made possible through a combination of federal and state funding sources—not local dollars, said Meegan Jessee, the county’s deputy chief administrative officer. A group opposed to the expansion has formed and, mostly via social media at the moment, is gathering support via Facebook and change.org. As of press time, more than 650 people had signed an online petition to “Stop Chico Walmart Expansion.” Chicoan Roger Beadle, who recently agreed to take on a leadership role in the effort, said he’d do everything in his power to educate local residents about the negative effect Walmart’s plans will have on the city.

“Education has to happen within the community,” Beadle said by phone. “This will not create jobs—it will have a negative impact on employment. And it will not increase taxes.”

To put the issue in context, over a decade ago, Walmart came to the city of Chico with a proposal to

not only expand the current store on Forest Avenue into a supercenter but also to build a second supercenter on the north end of town, about 7 miles away. Five years, stacks of petitions and dozens of packed meetings later, the big box abandoned plans for the north store. A year later, in 2009, the Forest Avenue supercenter was put on hold. That was after both the Planning Commission and City Council rejected the EIR, saying it didn’t adequately consider negative impacts or mitigation measures.

Last year, Walmart returned with a new expansion plan. Instead of adding over 100,000 square feet to the existing store, most of it—82,000 square feet—being grocery, it would increase the current footprint by 66,500 square feet. That would include increased grocery space as well as a drive-

thru pharmacy and retail/grocery pickup zone. But that’s not all. The new proposal also includes growing onto the vacant lot between Walmart and Wittmeier Auto Center and the construction of two separate buildings for retail and/ or restaurants as well as an eightpump gas station with a kiosk.

That means the net new sales space would be 120,000 square feet.

“FoodMaxx will probably close ...” Beadle said, recalling one of the probable outcomes outlined in the previous expansion’s EIR. This time around, the EIR says it’s likely that one nearby grocery will close, but that’s not considered a significant impact. “I also see that they’re going to put in a gas station. So, the Sinclair [gas station] right there on the corner would likely go away. They’re going to put in a strip mall, with restaurants and such—that’s going to impact other small businesses.

“I’m sick of Walmart coming in and strong-arming small communities.”

Beadle’s concerns mostly echo those of years past, when the most significant impacts were found to be increased traffic and the potential for urban decay. The current EIR does take into consideration the proposed Walmart in Paradise, but says that will not significantly impact an expanded Chico store.

The EIR points to only one significant unavoidable impact, which is based on increased trips on Highway 99 between East 20th Street and Highway 32. However, it also suggests several areas of possible contention, which include air quality, aesthetics, noise, biological resources and urban decay.

“The whole thing just doesn’t feel right,” Beadle summarized.

“A lot of people don’t see it—they like the convenience. But I think the Waltons have enough money.

We’ll be paying the price, in the long haul, for having Walmart here.”

Death unassisted Local hospitals choose not to offer aid in dying by

Adoctors and nurses. As professionals trained to promote health and prolong lives, patient’s death can feel like a failure to

many have conflicting feelings about helping a patient die—even when that person is suffering from a progressive disease.

Now, Californians can ask for just that under a new state law. Senate Bill 128, aka the End of Life Option Act, went into effect on June 6. There are several hoops to jump through, but, basically, the law allows terminally ill patients expected to live less than six months to obtain a prescription of lethal medication from a doctor. Choosing that path is entirely up to the patient, and each individual doctor, clinic and hospital can decide whether or not to help.

Faith-based organizations like Feather River Hospital in Paradise, operated by parent company Adventist Health, have deep reservations, explained spokeswoman Maureen Wisener.

“Our mission is to share God’s love by sharing health, wholeness and hope,” she said. “So, enabling or facilitating somebody’s death before their time is counter to our belief that God gave life and it’s not up to us to take it.”

As such, Adventist Health has prohibited its medical staff from taking part in any way. “We respect people’s right to choose,” Wisener said, “but we won’t and cannot actively participate in helping people die.”

Enloe Medical Center has opted out of providing aid-in-dying evaluations or prescriptions as well, but not for religious reasons, said Dr. Marcia Nelson, the hospital’s vice president of medical affairs.

“We really think it’s best for a patient to exercise this right outside of an acute-care

hospital setting,” she said. “Enloe doesn’t see a role for itself in this.”

In fact, neither Nelson nor Wisener is aware of any local health care providers, private or otherwise, who plan on helping patients end their lives.

“I can fairly confidently say that patients are not going to get a prescription from a physician in [the Ridge] community,” Wisener said. “But they might.”

It’s not just a local thing. Many hospi-

tals throughout California have recently announced that they won’t participate in the End of Life Options Act. Since he’s seen all of this play out before, George Eighmey expected widespread resistance early after the law’s implementation.

He’s president of the board of directors for the Death with Dignity National Center, an advocacy group based in Portland, Ore. (Oregon, Washington and Vermont already have aid-in-dying laws on the books.)

During a phone conversation with the CN&R, he explained that, when Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act became law in 1997, the medical community was slow to get on board.

“In the beginning, very few doctors, pharmacists and hospices participated,” he said.

Only a couple dozen doctors would write the prescription at first, he added, but now there are about 1,500 statewide. “It takes everyone some time to come around.”

Whether hospitals prescribe end-of-life medication or allow patients to ingest it on the premises means very little, Eighmey said, because the vast majority of patients choose to die at home. In Oregon, only two people have taken the drug in a hospital.

“They want to take the medication surrounded by family at home,” he said. “They don’t like the idea of doing it in a sterile hospital.”

Death with Dignity has been tracking the numbers in Oregon since 1998. About 1,000 people have taken the lethal medication—though many more have explored the option. Nine out of 10 people who start the process don’t see it through to the end, and only about a quarter of patients who fill the prescription actually take it.

That may be because having the option, should worse come to worst, is a comfort in itself, Nelson said. “It provides an element of control. When we’re faced with the end of our lives, it feels very out of control.”

And it’s not like just anyone can walk into a doctor’s office and walk out with a prescription for lethal drugs. California’s law, especially, has loads of patient safeguards built in, Eighmey said.

First off, a patient must be an adult, deemed mentally competent and have a terminal diagnosis confirmed by two physicians. Then there’s a 15-day waiting period before the prescription can be filled. Finally, the patient must give a 48-hour notice to his or her physician before taking the drug.

“It’s not something you can do very quickly or easily,” Eighmey said. “And it’s not a decision people make lightly.”

For its part, Feather River Hospital

encourages patients to consider hospice and palliative-care options rather than the aid-in-dying route, Wisener said.

“Certainly, our hospice program is one of the best options people can consider,” she said. “It allows us to provide so much in the way of comfort, support and care during their last days. But in our community, we’ve seen that people don’t take advantage of hospice until extremely late—almost too late.

“Many patients are in hospice for a week or 10 days, and then

they’re gone.”

But even for people who’ve been diagnosed with a terminal illness, the outlook can improve and hope can return. And making people better is always a medical provider’s primary goal, Wisener said.

“Clinical professionals are trained to heal and save lives,” she said. “You don’t go to medical school or nursing school to learn how to help somebody die. You learn how to help somebody live.”

While that’s an admirable attitude, Eighmey said, it’s not always the best approach.

“Physicians believe they can cure it,” he said, “but a terminal diagnosis is, by definition, incurable.” □

Thinking of the children Climate change debate could gain traction with new focus on effects to kids’ health

ossil fuels represent a two-pronged

attack on the health of children, a leading health scientist has warned. To foster health and well-being in future generations, society needs to dramatically decrease dependence on dirty energy.

In a commentary released last week summarizing the key science around fossil fuels and children’s health, Frederica Perera, a professor and researcher at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health, argues the science clearly shows that both toxic air emission and climate change as a result of fossil fuel emissions pose grave dangers to children.

The benefits to children’s health and future economy from a reduction in fossil fuel use are enormous—$230 billion per year, according to researchers—and must factor into any policy arguments.

And beyond the scientific and economic arguments for reducing the burning of fossil fuels, there is a “strong moral imperative to protect our most vulnerable populations,” Perera wrote in the commentary published today in Environmental Health Perspectives.

Debate over energy use and regulation, she said in an interview, must “look at the full cost” of continued reliance on fossil fuels.

“We must include health costs,” she said.

“As a nation we need to convince policymakers to think in an integrated way when it comes to climate change, public health, energy and the environment.”

Burning fossil fuels—coal, natural gas and oil—releases a toxic mix of compounds, including particulate matter, mercury, carbon monoxide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Exposure to such pollutants, both as a fetus and during early childhood, has

been associated with a many health problems in kids: low birth weights, preterm births, asthma, reduced IQs, depression and anxiety to name a few.

“A lot of it is from inflammation, a process our body just doesn’t like,” said Lori Byron, a pediatrician based in Hardin, Mont., and member of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, a nonprofit advocating for policies to address climate change. “The list [of health effects] just keeps growing.”

Those same fossil fuels are the largest source of greenhouse gases, which drive global climate change. Global warming is projected to increase heat, droughts and storm intensity in many regions, which can lead to food insecurity for kids, bolstered bug-driven diseases such as the Zika virus, and heat-related illness.

Also, as droughts and extreme heat feed social and political instability, there are the mental health effects on children forced to migrate, often from one poor country to another.

“We’ve been focused too much on polar bears and ice caps, not what impacts people’s daily lives,” said Michael Green, chief executive officer at the Center for Environmental Health.

Children, with brains and bodies still developing, are more sensitive and vulnerable to all of these problems.

“The children I worry about most are those kids in the worst situations—already poor, living in coastal cities, already deal-

ing with marginal health and maybe dealing with other pollutants, like lead from water,” said Dr. Aaron Bernstein, associate director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard and a pediatrician.

“Climate change is amplifying all of those effects, from food security, to displacement of families, to mobilization of pollutants in soil,” he said.

There are other “synergistic” effects between climate change and air toxics as well, Perera said, such as worsening groundlevel ozone, which is formed when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds interact. Warmer temperatures hasten the formation. “Greater concentrations of ozone at ground level greatly exacerbates asthma in children,” she said.

“There’s also cumulative impacts on children and babies in utero of having exposure to air toxics, and associated effects on birth outcomes and health and development, and then some are also getting insults, stresses from climate change—malnutrition, excess disease, more pollution, and more heat related disorders,” she said.

The impacts can last a lifetime. “The harm may be experienced in the first months or years, but it plays out over the entire life,” Perera said. “Respiratory illness is a risk factor for COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease] in adulthood. ADHD, reduced IQ, autism, these don’t just disappear, but persist and affect function, well-being and the ability to contribute to society.”

The price tag to all this? Coal plants alone cost the U.S. an estimated $100 billion a year due to health impacts. And the World Health Organization estimated that climate change would cost the planet up to $4 billion a year by 2030 due to deaths and disease.

But those costs can be turned into savings.

Increasing renewables such as wind and solar power to 36 percent of global energy consumption by 2030 could help avoid an estimated $230 billion of health costs, according to a 2015 study.

Perera sees progress: The global commitment to reduce greenhouse gases at the United Nations’ Paris climate talks last year is a prime example. President Obama’s Clean Power Plan, stayed by the Supreme Court for now, could lead to an estimated $55 billion to $93 billion in climate- and healthrelated benefits in 2030, according to the Obama Administration.

Perera said that by framing energy policy as a children’s health issue, politicians might be able to cut through some of the impasse blocking fossil fuel reform.

“It’s a value we all share,” she said.

“Every culture, every family, every person cares about vulnerable children and making sure they’re protected from harm.” □

Fermenting frontier Three years ago, Carlos Gonzales was working as the e-commerce manager at his father’s business, Fifth Sun, when he began experimenting with fermentation during his free time. Six months later, he and sister Amber Smith decided that the local culinary market was ripe enough to support a preservation-by-fermentation business, and they founded Pacific Culture.

Their current focus is on making sauerkraut and pickling locally grown, in-season organic vegetables, but they’re open to branching out into other fermented foods as well. In fact, Gonzales said he hopes to start selling Pacific Culture kombucha soon at the Thursday Night Market. The company is a small operation—there are just two employees—but its products are sold throughout the North State. Pacific Culture has a small storefront at 1266 Humboldt Ave., open Tuesday-Friday, 1-6 p.m.

What inspired you to start Pacific Culture?

I had been interested in various kinds of fermented foods for a few years. In college [at the University of Southern California], I would make sourdough pizza and breads, as well as different fermented vegetables. As I

researched and learned about the process, I became more and more interested. When I moved [back] to Chico, I identified the signs that it was a growing market.

What were those signs?

There is a lot of new research coming out about the benefits of probiotics, and there is also a general resurgence in craft businesses. There is a need and appreciation for things done really well, on a small scale. Those trends of renewed interest are allowing me to stay true to my own values of sourcing locally and being more environmentally aware.

What are some of the benefits of probiotics?

First and foremost, consuming probiotic foods boosts the gut flora in your stomach and that aids in your digestion. There is a lot of research coming out about how your gut is connected to your brain. So, eating probiotics

could be good for your emotional health as well.

Can you explain the pickling process?

At Pacific Culture, we do lacticacid fermentation, which means we use dry salt instead of vinegar to make the process happen.

First, we wash the vegetables and process them accordingly—cutting, slicing, shredding and coring as needed. Through the entire process we are trying to avoid oxygen, because, if the vegetables are oxidized, they will soften during fermentation. Then, we salt them as soon as possible. The salt draws the water out of the vegetables, and the vegetables sit in the brine until they are transferred to an airtight stainless steel tank, where they ferment for anywhere from two to eight weeks. And when it comes out of the tank, you have a traditionally preserved, live fermented vegetable product.

When I first heard about ExtraPlate, I got positively giddy. Probably because I love food, and the options seem endless with this new app. Here’s the gist: Sellers list edible items—produce from their home garden or commercial farm; homemade meals and other foodstuff; specialty or mark-down items from food trucks and restaurants—and buyers buy it. What a fantastic idea!

ExtraPlate was conceived by Grant Rosenquist (whom I first met years ago, when he worked for the News & Review in Sacramento) and Jimmy Crabbe.

They began working on it last year and launched last month. While it sounds pretty simple, there’s actually a lot to it—but the devil’s in the details and these guys have the details down.

“Our standards aren’t really about the food,” Rosenquist explained by phone, “but about professionalism, customer service and consistency.” To that end, sellers all attend a beginner’s seminar (or webinar) that outlines best practices and policies. Everyone’s asked to use similar packaging and is supplied with a stamp with the ExtraPlate logo on it, in the name of consistency.

One of the coolest things, in my opinion, is the new world of food that this app opens up. For instance, my boyfriend makes killer beef jerky. He sells it to friends, but ExtraPlate would be a perfect outlet for him to branch out. I also know some fantastic home cooks who sometimes make more than they can eat. With this app, Vickie down the street could list four slices of her epic lasagna for $5 apiece and not have to throw away uneaten leftovers. If I could actually grow veggies and had too many to eat, I could sell them, too.

The same goes for restaurants and food trucks, Rosenquist and Crabbe said. Rather than throwing away perfectly good food before it goes bad, they can list it on ExtraPlate and potentially turn it into revenue—and happy bellies. All payments go through the app, and sellers can choose between offering pickup or delivery.

As of press time, there was only one seller consistently offering food in Chico. Her focus is on gluten-free baked goods, which I have no interest in, so I have yet to actually try it out. But I have a feeling it’s going to catch on quickly. Maybe you’ll even see some of Chuck’s jerky on there sometime soon.

Third and Main Makeover Anyone who’s passed by the corner of Third and Main streets lately probably has noticed the façade is under construction.

The signs are down, as are the awnings. According to Chico City Manager Mark Orme, the downstairs space is being split into two, with one of the spots being transformed into a Mexican restaurant, name pending. There is no word of anything changing at the Crazy Horse, so you chaps-wearing, line-dancing folks can rest easy.

When a tourist loaded a young bison into the back of his car at Yellowstone National Park last month, the incident shocked people inside and outside the park. But there are ways all visitors—park veterans or nature newbies—can minimize effects on these irreplaceable places and set parks on a sustainable path for the next century. You can help keep the wild in wilderness and maybe even leave parks better than you found them.

Keeping the wild in wilderness Since the bison calf incident on May 9, Yellowstone National Park officials are on high alert.

The driver, Shamash Kassam, of Canada, was cited for “picking up and disturbing a bison calf” when he encountered what he said was a “wet and shivering” calf in Lamar Valley. Concerned for its survival, he said, he plucked the bison from

the roadway, placed it into the back of his SUV, and drove it to nearby Lamar Buffalo Ranch.

Attempts by park personnel to reintegrate the calf into its herd were unsuccessful, and, since it posed a safety concern by continually approaching people, it was euthanized. According to the Casper Star-Tribune of Casper, Wyo., Kassam pleaded guilty on June 2. He was sentenced to six months probation and ordered to pay a fine and a $500 contribution to the Yellowstone Park Foundation Wildlife Protection Fund.

keep their distance, don’t ever feed the animals, and take photos focused more on the animals and less on their selfies. Many parks, including Yellowstone, require a 25-yard buffer zone for ungulates like deer, elk and bison and a 100-yard no-go zone for predators like bears and wolves.

“Some people just think that’s a suggestion, but the rules are not arbitrary; they are in the best interest of people and resources,” says Yellowstone spokesperson Charissa Reid.

their young and will aggressively defend them. Last year, in separate events, five people who encroached on bison were seriously injured. Kerry Gunther, a bear expert in his 34th year at Yellowstone, emphasizes that people are putting themselves at risk when approaching or chasing down wildlife.

“Wildlife is aggressive when they don’t know what you’re going to do,” he says. “Wildlife needs our concern but not our assistance.”

The bison put in the car isn’t the first incident this season that has park officials concerned. In recent weeks, there has been a rash of dangerous and illegal behavior—people trying to pose for close-ups with bison or, in one instance, trying to pet an adult bison—some of which has been captured on video and made the rounds on social media.

In one incident, four young men visiting the park ventured off the boardwalk at the Great Prismatic Spring—away from the walkways put in place not only to protect visitors from scalding water and sometimes thin geothermal crust, but also to safeguard the delicate bacterial mats that give the spring its stunning colors. No one in the party was injured, but they ended up in hot water with park authorities.

Leading the park’s response to record

numbers of visitors is Yellowstone’s social scientist, Ryan Atwell. It’s his job to understand what people are hoping to get out of their time in the park and to match that with staff objectives to educate and regulate, to protect park resources, and to safeguard visitors.

“We have so many different kinds of visitors with different definitions of what they think ‘wild’ is,” says Atwell. “Some think, ‘I’m in a park, it must be safe,’” he says, but that can lead to plenty of injuries and many more near-misses.

So stay on the trail, say the experts, and marvel at how wild the parks can be without human interference.

Waste not More than 300 million annual park visitors generate a lot of trash, at least 100 million pounds of it. And that’s just the garbage that’s handled by the National Park Service (NPS); it doesn’t include the cast-offs generated by visitors in restaurants, lodges and tour buses.

But from Glacier to Everglades, there are things every park visitor can do to minimize the mess.

Roughly a year ago, the nonprofit National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) and Subaru launched a pilot project in partnership with the NPS. The car manufacturer has operated a “zero-landfill” assembly plant for more

than a decade and agreed to lend that expertise to parks. The initiative is now focused on three big parks—Denali, Grand Teton, and Yosemite—where 7 million combined visitors generated 16.6 million pounds of waste in 2013. Nearly 10 million pounds of that was sent to landfills that year, and the rest was reused, recycled, or, where possible, composted.

NPCA’s Hayley Mortimer says those parks are now setting goals to greatly reduce what’s diverted to landfills, which requires bringing together stakeholders—from gateway communities and park concessionaires to daytrippers—who need to sign on to the program if it’s going to succeed.

effort to have waste deposited into the correct bins. Information gleaned so far from the zerolandfill project revealed that mindless tossing of items into the wrong bins is still a major issue.

Simply paying attention to where you’re throwing something can also set a good example for other visitors. (And don’t forget to remove the never-recyclable lids from bottles!)

Enjoy the view But really helping to reduce the stream of garbage in parks starts before you get there.

Mortimer urges visitors to “rethink their picnic” and opt for reusable containers over plastic bags or bottles—including water bottles, coffee cups, dishware and silverware. Parks are working to increase the number of water-bottle refilling stations, and the water, says Mortimer, is safe.

Since food waste is the primary source of garbage in parks, if you’re eating in a park, don’t order more than you need and, if you do, pack containers to take home the leftovers.

In the early 1990s, an uptick in visitors to parts of Zion National Park turned into 5,000 vehicles vying for 400 parking spaces on a peak-season day along the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Out of frustration, visitors parked pretty much anywhere, which had a serious impact on some park resources. In 2000, the park put in place the mandatory, and highly successful, shuttle that still operates daily from March through October.

Several other parks have followed Zion’s lead, but many more offer voluntary shuttles (including heavily visited Yosemite, Rocky Mountain, Acadia and Grand Canyon) and other alternative transit. The NPS reports having 147 alternative transportation systems in 72 parks.

As park visitation continues to climb—there

were more than 300 million visitors to parks in 2015 and even more are expected in this centennial year—park roads have become more congested. The NPS is quick to point out that it has not responded to that crush by building new roads or even expanding existing ones, but is instead focused on alternative transit. (Never mind that with a nearly $12 billion maintenance backlog it can barely afford to fill potholes.)

Congestion on roads means air and noise pollution, parking woes and traffic headaches. Opting for a shuttle or tram reduces wear and tear on park infrastructure, protects plant and animal life, and creates cleaner and quieter parks for everyone. Not only does getting out from behind the wheel benefit park resources, but it also takes the stress out of navigating tricky terrain and allows everyone to take in the sights. And isn’t that the reason we go to national parks?

to leave parks better than they found them.

Atwell talks about turning unfortunate incidents into opportunities to educate all visitors and to clarify their roles in the stewardship of nature.

“Some of us are worried that Yellowstone is becoming more of an amusement park atmosphere. But it’s still an amazing, dynamic experience to be in this park. It can be a powerfully positive experience,” he says.

The key is “respect,” he says, a word uttered many times since the beginning of the tourist season. In places like Yellowstone, Denali or the Great Smoky Mountains, each visitor needs to step back, encounter those priceless resources within limits, and value them as a national heritage they help safeguard. Atwood has seen the park and the people many times at their best, and often with groups of college students who cry at the end of their time in Yellowstone. Those human-wild interactions can be, he says, “phenomenally lifechanging opportunities.” Ω

On “Chin Up,” the first single from Total Fucker (originally a term of endearment between the coupled Galloway and Tavella, then a brief band name before settling on the EP title), Galloway’s typically emotive vocals are complemented by Tavella’s saccharine harmonies, while a synth-splattered mutiny unfolds just below a rumble of moody guitar. The symbiosis of Tavella’s more synth-based foundations and Galloway’s allegiances to guitar-rock and pop hints at a potent alchemy.

“I wanted to definitely mess around with soft synths and hard synths, and have been doing that over the last few years,” Galloway said. “I wanted to have that be an element rather than have it be just straight guitar-rock all the time.”

Steeped in the eye-opening cultural seismology that is living in downtown Los Angeles, Galloway and Tavella’s songwriting crosses both sonic and socioeconomic paths on songs like “Flower

District”—an observational track documenting their recent residency on the cusp of Skid Row. As in the real Skid Row neighborhood of LA, which is home to thousands of homeless citizens.

“We moved a month or two ago from that part of LA to Highland Park, and it’s like a different world,” Galloway said.

“It’s just weird to see intense wealth and human misery all around. I’m still trying to figure out how to be a person in that mess. I was ready to move to Montana.”

That disparity is mirrored on tunes like the somber “Total Fucker,” which finds Galloway’s dark resilience manifesting in an ascending, incendiary chorus reminiscent—if slightly—to his previous output with the much-loved Chico-based crew The Shimmies.

Total Fucker was produced by Jeff Saltzman, who is also part-owner of OIM with Tavella, and who previously worked with the likes of The Killers and Blondie.

Saltzman’s position as a sounding board for the band during recording was a boon to how well the EP turned out.

Back to the swamp Dr. Dog rerecords, reinvents debut cassette something old new Dagainmaking to a whole new level with its r. Dog has taken the idea of

latest album, Psychedelic Swamp.

Fans of the band may recognize the by title because Alan Sculley Psychedelic Swamp was the Preview: name of the dr. dog performs Philadelphia saturday, july 2, at band’s selfhigh sierra released debut Music festival (june 30-july 3), cassette. But Plumas county the new version fairgrounds, Quincy, (released this www.highsierra past February) is music.com not a remake of the original. It’s a total reinvention, for which various bits and parts from the cassette were taken, expanded upon and developed into an entirely new collection of songs.

Despite being a very loose and fairly unformed work, the long out-of-print cassette—self-made and self-released in 2001 when Dr. Dog was just starting to play shows around the Philadelphia area—did have a lyrical concept, according to guitarist/vocalist Scott McMicken.

“The tape was kind of a message to us, Dr. Dog, from this guy Phrases, who landed in the swamp and learned sort of a valuable life lesson while there,” McMicken said in a phone interview. “Then he felt

the need to send his message back to Earth, and he chose us to be the ones to translate it because he was aware that what he was doing and his ways of communicating, while they made sense in the swamp, were pretty much incomprehensible to anyone here. … So he chose us to take that kind of garbled mess and turn it into the biggest rock album ever made, so that it could be spread around the globe to the masses.”

But the music itself wasn’t as defined. McMicken said it was more of a statement about the band members’ intention as they moved forward to experiment musically and always follow their muse wherever it took them. This helps explain the cassette’s free-form, shape-shifting nature.

“The original album is like 35 tracks and almost two hours long,” McMicken said. “There’s just a ton of stuff on it. And it ranges; I mean, I guess it all is music, but a lot of it is more of a kind of ambience. The original tape is less an album and more of this, like, I don’t even know what the word would be. From track to track you’re traveling through either something that would be a song with sort of narrative aspects in the lyrics into things that are soundscapes that are almost like field recordings from the swamp.”

The new Psychedelic Swamp, by contrast, is very much a cohesive

set, featuring a dozen songs plus a short spoken-word interlude. Songs like “Dead Record Player,” “Fire on My Back” and “Badvertise” are concise, poppy and punchy, while several of the tracks veer into quirkier territory. There’s the gauzy texture on “Golden Hind,” the spacey feel of “Holes in My Back,” and the glammy tone of “Bring My Baby Back,” all showing that Dr. Dog has retained the sense of musical adventure that helped inspire the original cassette.

McMicken said there were very few limits placed on how far the band—which also includes Toby Leaman (vocals, bass, guitar), Frank McElroy (guitar), Zach Miller (keyboards), Eric Slick (drums) and Dimitri Manos (percussion/multiinstrumentalist)—could go in turning the original source material into something new.

“So, even the essence of the songs themselves, as far as their chord structure and melody, was also as up for grabs as anything else,” he said. “Lyrics were really the only thing we were beholden to. But even in that sense, we were adding lyrics to kind of lengthen things and make them work in longer songs for things that were actually just short little snippets on the tape. So yeah, from the architecture of the songs themselves to the arrangements, there was just total wide-open freedom.” □

All right, all right, let’s fight Rebellion in the ranks of the American Confederacy of Jones feels like several movies imperIfectly wedged into a single not-quite-epic

The film’s central subject is a unique and littleknown piece of American history—a rebellion against the Confederacy in several Free State of Jones counties in Mississippi Starring Matthew during the Civil War. A McConaughey, group of disenchanted Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Confederate army deserters Mahershala Ali and found common cause of a Keri Russell.

The film opens with gore-filled battle scenes in which Knight and others begin to see themselves as fodder— “poor men getting killed in a rich man’s war.” Knight deserts in order to take the body of his teenage nephew home for burial, and when he learns that Confederate troops have been “confiscating” the livestock and stored corn of local farmers, he resolves to organize the entire local population—men, women, children—for armed resistance to any further such “appropriations.”

Further study, once again, is required, or at least recommended. In the meantime, I value this film for McConaughey’s intermittently offbeat performance, for its persistence in quietly complicating even its most obvious lessons, and for keeping 150 years of “received wisdom” at least slightly off balance. □

I define “taco truck” to mean anything serving Mexican food without table service or traditional tipping (tip cans don’t count), with minimal seating area and an expected outlay of $5-$7. Thus, I include La Cocina Economica, Tacos Mary and their brethren. I know they aren’t trucks, but they have a truck heart—trucks up on blocks, as it were.

The first criterion to be weighed is the name of the place. As regular Coop readers know, I place great value in the name of a restaurant. A name is a window on the soul. See Uriah Heep and Sid Vicious.

The most popular name for a taco truck seems to be the region in Mexico from which the owner came: El Michoacano, Tacos de Acapulco. This calls to me, because it bespeaks an admirable pride of origin. Thou shalt know me by my roots. Michoacan’s food seems a cut above the rest.

One of the most popular truck names is El Grullense, which has been parsed in Internet chat rooms in countless twisted ways, but in fact merely means “person from the town of El Grullo,” in Jalisco. The town must be almost deserted by now, since thousands of its citizens have chosen to move to

California and open taco trucks.

The next most popular name seems to be Crazy Taco (or Taco Loco). I find this disingenuous. I have never met the slightest whiff of madness around a taco stand.

In fact, in my experience (skip over this next clause if you find cultural stereotypes offensive), Mexicans are the sanest, most grounded of people. Yet I’ve never seen a truck called Sane Taco or Taco Cuerdo.

A digression: While taco trucks are in no way “crazy,” there is a mystery about them, surrounding the aluminum foil. You order a burrito and it comes entirely wrapped in aluminum foil. You eat half the burrito and go to rewrap the leftover half in the same foil, and it’s too small! This torments my friend Max, who loves taco trucks but always comes away distressed by this conundrum.

The next most popular name is some form of Gordo: Tacos Gordos, Gordo Burrito. I’m OK with this, though I always have to set aside my American resentment of fat-shaming. I know Mexican fat isn’t like American fat. Yet, simply for balance, I’d like to see a Skinny Taco truck. Just once.

My favorite names are the ones I can’t comprehend. My favorite in this regard is El Mismo, which shows up on trucks now and then and clearly means “The Same”—but the same as what? The person in the window invariably has no idea.

Props summa cum laude go to The Taco Truck, in the All the Best parking lot. That is so meta. Like naming a movie High School Musical. In this and other ways, TTT is raising the taco truck bar.

The Odd Tape Oddisee Mellow Music Group

In Celebration of Independence Day, the CN&R Office will be ClOseD Monday, July 4th.

When something is well done, it often gives the illusion of being easy. Oddisee’s new album, The Odd Tape, is one of those creations. The rapper/producer has put together an instrumental album that’s so smooth and accessible it seems like paint by numbers. Songs like “The Breakthrough,” with its stair-step rhythmic building, or “No Sugar No Cream” with its complete mid-song structural shift; the layering and movement feels so deliberate that you might trick yourself into thinking it’s easy. It’s not. The tact and craft exercised on this album are melodic finesse at its finest, and the result is gorgeous. These 12 songs quilt together elements of deep groove and delicate jazz into one solid sound that wraps around you. Oddisee’s been somewhat under the mainstream radar, but there’s no doubt that’ll change sooner than later. It’s clear the man has aces up his sleeve.

Overwatch Blizzard Entertainment Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One With Overwatch, Blizzard enters the first-person shooter genre in an epic way—because, well, it’s Blizzard. With similar game modes and class-based team tactics, comparisons can be drawn to Valve’s Team Fortress 2, but Blizzard aims to provide more diversity with 21 playable characters. With weapons and abilities ranging from freeze guns and turrets to time travel and the power to resurrect fallen teammates, the battlefield is as chaotic as the characters themselves: a 500-pound, gas mask-wearing biker with a grappling chain and a shotgun full of scrap metal; a heavily armed, self-destructing mech; snipers; mad bombers; mystical healers; cyborg ninjas; and a socially minded celebrity on skates with music ’munition.

Blizzard does a great job of balancing the characters while allowing skilled players to overcome the odds occasionally.

Cosmetic unlocks—skins, sprays, victory poses—are awarded at a decent rate, but with hundreds available, it’d be nice to earn loot boxes for the Weekly Brawl or special events. Though Blizzard has undeniably succeeded in one area—Overwatch is epically addictive.

It’s Gonna Blow Billingsgate Media It’s Gonna’ Blow: San Diego’s Music Underground is filmmaker Bill Perrine’s document of San Diego’s highly combustible music scene in the 1990s. After keying in on Seattle and the success of grunge, record labels were quick to guess just where the next musical hotspot would be. Some thought San Diego. The film moves through early-1980s hardcore punk into what would follow—Pitchfork, Fishwife, Drive Like Jehu and Rocket From the Crypt (plus other lesser-known but worthwhile acts such as aMiniature, Heavy Vegetable, No Knife, The Locust and many more)—and spends much effort examining the barely controlled flat-out fury of Jehu and its game-changing self-titled debut album. Even when major labels called, few bands found commercial recognition (outside of Blink-182). The Stone Temple Pilots claimed San Diego as home, and most folks interviewed for the film laugh at the mere suggestion since STP rarely played there live. However, despite their relative obscurity in America, art-punk antagonists Trumans Water were flown to England at tastemaker and DJ John Peel’s request to record and perform in front of thousands at the Reading Festival. Compulsory viewing for adventurous music fans.

o Death I’m not a fan of most new bluegrass music—too much emphasis on musicality and improv (i.e., jamming)—but I do enjoy many of the firstgeneration players, and I love the “old-time music” in which the style of bluegrass and the great Ralph stanley were rooted. Stanley died June 23, at the age of 89, and with his passing, the world has lost one of the last living connections to early American folk music. Stanley’s coarse, expressive voice evoked another time, and he’s most famous today for putting those otherworldly pipes to use on a Grammy-winning a capella vocal performance of the Appalachian standard, “O Death,” for the film o Brother, Where art Thou. Stanley lived a long life, and his legacy is cemented thanks to his iconic renditions of American folk songs (“Man of Constant Sorrow,” “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” etc.), his distinctive banjo playing, and as one of the handful of originators of the bluegrass style.
