Arty-tOwN reputAtION
1. Play time For a town Chico’s size, there are a respectable number of theater options, each offering something a little different. In addition to the university’s program—contemporary and classic works presented by the School of the Arts (www.schooloftheartscsuchico.com)—there are three community theaters in Chico: Blue Room Theatre (modern and contemporary works, and occasional late-night fare, www.blueroom theatre.com), Chico Theater Co. (small-scale Broadway musicals, www.chicotheater company.com), California Regional Theatre (large-scale Broadway musicals, www.crtshows.com).

Life’s rich Pageant
1078 Gallery
For 36 years, the Pageant Theatre has been Chico’s dependable art-house screen, showcasing independent films that otherwise would never have found their way to our little North State island. (Local tip: Monday is cheap night—all seats $4.) And in the past year, the neighborhood theater has added regular late-night showings of cult classics paired with live performances by local bands. 351 E. Sixth St., www.pageantchico.com
3. Art party Most local galleries and cafes kick off new art exhibits by putting out some snacks and beverages and hosting the artist for a meet and greet. Some even bring in live music. And it’s free. The opening shindigs at the 1078 Gallery (820 Broadway, www.1078gallery.org) are particularly lively.
4. What’s a
“Chikoko”?
The weird, colorful and alwaysentertaining Chikoko is a fashion and performance troupe that is a cornerstone of Chico’s unique art scene. Formed in 2005, the group is currently made up of five local designers/artists/performers who embrace creativity and innovation via original fashions and various functions hosted around town. Look for the annual, and very popular, fashion-show/performance extravaganza at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in the fall, and the Bizarre Bazaar arts and craft fair in December. www.chikoko.com

Make a day of artwalking by visiting the galleries on the Chico State campus. There are the big ones—The Turner Print Museum and the University Art Gallery—but there also other lesser-known spaces that offer a rotating schedule of student art throughout the school year. The B-SO Space in Ayres Hall is a great place to start a tour that continues to the tiny Laxson Fine Arts Gallery on the second floor of Laxson Auditorium, then the Humanities Center Gallery (highlighting visiting artists) in Trinity Hall, followed by The Turner in the Meriam Library building and the Third Floor Gallery in the BMU. Finish up at the brand new Arts & Humanities building, which houses the University Art Gallery, in addition to other yet-to-be-unveiled art spaces. www.csuchico.edu/art

6. Public art crawl
You can find art throughout Chico, and you don’t have to enter a single gallery to experience it. From the impressively tiled Sea Serpent in Caper Acres to the Lindo Channel Aerosol Art Project to the many murals covering iconic downtown buildings, there is more art than can be visited in one day. Visit the city website for details on Chico’s public art and an Art in Public Places map: www.chico.ca.us/arts_commission/ home_page.asp
7. Butcher Shop There is no quicker path to local cred than taking in the annual Butcher Shop theater festival. For two nights over Labor Day weekend, a collection of Chico’s theaterand music-types—including many visiting expats—convene in an orchard at the end of Normal Street for a program of live music, original

avant-garde one-acts and the staging of a classic tableau. Nearly every arts-loving Chicoan, young and old, will be there. www.face book.com/TheButcherShopChico
8. The polka-dot house
Local artist Norm Dillinger has covered his entire house, (aka Lumina), outside and in, in
polka-dotted paintings. The walls are covered. The windows are covered. His guitar is covered. Even his yard and his truck in the driveway are covered. It’s like a pointillist painting come to life. Walk by and knock on the door for a tour. 821 Orient St.

Monkey Face
10. Climb
the monkey At first sight, it normally takes a moment for recognition to kick in. “Ahh, it does look like a monkey.” Monkey Face is a rock formation in the shape of what looks like a giant primate’s profile jutting out from a hillside above Horseshoe Lake and watching over the entrance to Upper Bidwell Park. It’s one of Chico’s most iconic images, and the hiking trail leading up to its crown is a must for all newcomers. www.bidwell park.org
11. Go take a hike!
is your bag, check out B Trail, which cuts downhill from the north rim of the canyon, or Guardians Trail—a challenging path over on the south side. Trail maps at www.bidwell park.org.
12. Be a river rat Grab a tube from any local liquor store and a few—or a few dozen—of your best friends, slather on the sunscreen and prepare for a leisurely float down the Sacramento River. Load in at Irvine Finch river access and end at Scotty’s Landing, where a post-float burger and a cold one would certainly be in order.
All the trails in Bidwell Park are worth exploring, but the ones along Big Chico Creek in Upper Park are the most scenic and diverse. Of those, a favorite of locals is the Yahi Trail, which follows the creek upstream for 4 miles along its north side, providing easy access to swimming spots. If mountain biking

13. Into the wild A little knowledge can go a long way toward an appreciation of the natural world, and one can learn a lot about the flora and fauna of the Chico area by tagging along with one of many local naturalist groups that lead frequent informative, fun (and often free) excursions into the local wilds. Hook up with the Altacal Audubon Society (www.altacal. org), California Native Plant Society (www.mountlassen.cnps.org) or the local chapter of the Sierra Club known as the Yahi Group (www. sierraclub.org/mother-lode/yahi). And keep an eye on the calendar at the Friends of Bidwell Park website (www.friendsofbidwellpark.org).
14. Smell
the death
One of the world’s largest flowers is named the Amorphophallus titanum (aka giant misshapen penis) because, well, that’s exactly what it looks like. But its common monicker, the “corpse flower,” is based on the fact it smells like rotting flesh when it blooms. The flower is rare even in its native Sumatra, and there are just a few dozen carefully cared for in America. One lives in Chico State’s greenhouse and is available for public viewing when it blooms every three years or so. The last time it did was June 2013, so keep your ears and nose open for the opportunity. Biological Sciences Department, 898-5356

swimming
One of the best ways to end a brutally hot Chico summer day is a night swim at Sycamore Pool—that concrete swimming hole at One-Mile Recreation Area in Lower Bidwell Park. You won’t be alone: On hot nights, the pool is poppin’ with people cooling off after a day spent outside—or, perhaps, in a bar—and you’ll find it’s an entirely different experience by starlight. We’ll look the other way if you forget your swimsuit.

Resource Center, but most locals know it as the Tree Farm. Established in 1904, it features an impressive nature trail that leads visitors along Comanche Creek past native and exotic trees, including a giant bamboo forest. Most are labeled with scientific and common names and country of origin. It’s also dog-friendly. Take Skyway past Raley’s, turn right on Dominic Drive, left on Morrow Lane, right on Cramer Lane and go to the entrance gate at the end.

OK, this is kind of a random destination, but it’s so badass. The Turkey Vulture Soaring Area is pretty far out Yahi Trail in Upper Bidwell Park, past Salmon Hole along the north edge of Iron Canyon rising up from Big Chico Creek. Find the trail sign and peek over to watch the big birds riding the breeze. Trail maps at www.bidwellpark.org.

Shubert’s Ice Cream & Candy has been around for more than 75 years, and for generations of Chicoans, the handcrafted ice cream and candy tastes like home. What should be your first scoop? It has to be Chico Mint—milk chocolate ice cream with broken pieces of Shubert’s signature Chico Mint candies mixed in. Tastes how the place smells. 178 E. Seventh St., www.shuberts.com
21. Cheese skirt You can get a great burger at a number of establishments around Chico, but as locals know, there’s one joint in town that takes cheeseburgers to the next level: Nobby’s. The longtime fave south of downtown uses giant cheese slices and lets them run over onto the grill. The technique creates a burger with melted goodness under the bun and a crunchy outer skirt that gives Nobby’s burgers (and its “Vegi Burger,” too) their signature flavor. A must-eat. 1444 Park Ave.

Monstros Pizza & Subs
FREAKO’S FUNMAKERS 26. Pizza in the pit
Cynics have been proclaiming the death of punk rock since the day it was born. They could benefit from heading down to Monstros Pizza for one of the delightfully raucous punk shows hosted by the Chico Area Punks (www.facebook.com/ chicoareapunks). It’s the only local venue where you can feast on some of Chico’s best pizza, enjoy a Schlitz or a soda, and dance around on a sawdust floor to some killer tour ing and local bands with Chico’s friendliest all-ages audience. 628 W. 27. Grab the mic In Chico, there is a stage for everyone, amateurs and pros alike. There are open mics in the area nearly every night of the week, including Tuesdays, 6 p.m., at Gogi’s Cafe (230 Salem St.), Wednesdays, 6 p.m., at the Maltese (1600 Park Ave.), and Thursdays, 7 p.m., at the very popular granddaddy of local open mics at Has Beans Coffee & Tea (501 Main St.). All of those cater mostly to musicians (and some, to poets, too), but if you think you have what it takes to make people laugh, or maybe just squirm uncomfortably, hit up the

29. Tricks and treats Downtown Chico maintains a solid G-rating during daylight hours on All Hallows’ Eve, as children scurry about the storefronts in search of sweets at a familyfriendly event called Treat Street. But come nightfall, all censors are dropped as the streets are overrun by horrifically, comically and/or scantily costumed young people in search of something other than candy. Those seeking to observe— or jump into—the paganistic, drunken revelry should find ample opportunity anywhere near campus, including downtown.
30. A porch
is a party
Porch parties are a staple of Chico’s south campus neighborhood, and with our area’s especially long summers, there is plenty of opportunity for taking the festivities and friends outside. Put out a cooler full of ice, pump up your party playlist, fire up the grill (or just hit up the closest taco truck) and send a blast to your friends to come over and put on a day-long
show for the whole block. (Just don’t dare set a couch on that porch—we wouldn’t want it to spontaneously catch fire.)
31. Who’s
your uncle? Everyone needs a cool uncle, someone to introduce you to good music and show you the ways of the world. While the members of the Uncle Dad’s Art Collective could probably dish out some solid

advice, the troupe of local musicians, actors, artists and dancers can certainly steer you toward some of the cooler happenings in Chico. If the future is like the past—which has included original musicaltheater productions and a hugescale multimedia tribute to Queen’s A Night at the Opera—there will be some ambitious and exciting new productions and collaborations on the schedule for the new school year. www.face book.com/UncleDadChico

you’re under 21 If you’re not yet of legal drinking age, it can be a bummer to watch your older friends go out to the bars while you stay at home. So, don’t. Several of Chico’s fun establishments—Madison Bear Garden (316 W. Second St.), the Tackle Box (379 E. Park Ave.), Oasis (1007 W. First St.), DownLo (319 Main St.)—are open to all ages (usually all day until 10 p.m.). So go out, challenge your buds to some pool or darts, watch your team on TV and enjoy a cold soft drink and some killer bar food.

Like any self-respecting liberal college town this close to Nevada, Chico has its share of Burners, and one of the more visible of local Black Rock regulars is the Camp Upsie Dasium crew, with its soundtrack provided by those funky brothers of invention, GravyBrain. Each year in March, at the midpoint between Burns, Upsie Dasium hosts the Burnal Chiquinox party featuring an eclectic array of performers at the Habitat Lab art space (199 E. 13th St.). The Heat
The boys of summer are back in Chico. After a 14-year absence, the Chico Heat baseball team has returned as part of the new, six-team Great West League, which draws top college players from across the country. That means high-caliber baseball, hot dogs, fireworks and Heater, the wacky dragon mascot, are back at Chico State’s Nettleton Stadium. The season runs from June 3 to Aug. 11 and includes 30 home games. Go to www. chicoheat.com for tickets and schedule information.

Speaking of which, the Thursday Night Market is a great place for seeing all sorts of Chico characters. There’s something ritualistic about the Chico Certified Farmers’ Market. Partly, that’s because the vendors—farmers, food-makers and other crafty folk (ceramicists, jewelry designers, etc.)—sell their wares every single Saturday, 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m., rain or shine, in the heart of downtown. The market at Second and Wall streets is also

right there. Now talk.
Want to freak out a friend? Head to the Roth Planetarium, the circular building behind Meriam Library on the Chico State campus. There’s a walkway that winds around down to its entrance. Instead of heading down, though, have your pal climb on top and stand in the center of the concrete circle, tell him to talk, and then watch his eyes widen as his voice echoes back to him (and only him). The spot is actually an echo chamber, and there’s a second one in town as well, in a similar concrete circle in front of Tri-Counties Bank at Fifth and Salem streets.
