Salute to fallen soldiers Memorial Day weekend. It often marks the beginning of summer, with

warm weather perfect for backyard barbecues and leisurely floats down the Sacramento River. Big-box stores celebrate with sales advertised with red, white and blue flags and balloons. And on Monday, much of America stops to take a break—from school, work, everything. We sleep in. We prep the ’cue. We enjoy life.

That is all as it should be. We should sit back and appreciate our families, friends and, especially, our freedoms. What often gets lost in the shuffle, in all the ads for discounted laptops and American flag tablecloths, is why we’re celebrating.

Memorial Day was established, albeit under the name Decoration Day, in 1868 to honor and remember the fallen soldiers of the American Civil War. That sentiment has continued and today we take the day off work and school as a tribute to all U.S. military personnel who have given their lives for our country, for us.

So, whatever your plans this Memorial Day weekend, and regardless of your feelings on war or military policy, we encourage you to take at least a moment to reflect on the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our way of life. And say a silent—or a very vocal—thank you to the ones who are no longer with us.

The CN&R salutes America’s fallen soldiers and the families and friends they left behind. Without their sacrifices, we might not have the freedom to print this free, independent newspaper. □

There are lessons to learn from the recent news of a Magalia woman busted

activity. Well, they certainly won’t if they can’t get to it, or use the bathroom while they’re there, or participate in at least some of the activities—and neither will their families or friends, because who wants to go to something that their loved one can’t enjoy with them?

In contrast, many places are quite welcoming for users with disabilities. They seem to have recognized that they will maximize profits or funding sources by becoming more accessible. They realize that the age group most likely to have financial heft is also the most likely to have physical challenges. In going above and beyond ADA compliance, they’re golden, morally and financially.

If your business or event wants to attract more patrons, check for the basics: Is there a clear path of travel (level thresholds; smooth, hard surfaces; accessible entryways)? A range of products or activities for users with differing abilities? A bathroom stall for wheelchairs, strollers and companions/ attendants/parents? No obstructions to existing accessibility features like parking spaces and ramps?

Building professionals, accessibility consultants, community members and sometimes even funding are available to help you. Go for the gold standard of

accessibility: It pays in many ways.

For starters, there are scumbags in the world who make a career of preying on society’s most vulnerable members. Indeed, stealing from elderly people is like stealing from children. It’s lower than low. Second, and most important, loved ones must take caution when searching for and hiring caregivers. The same level of screening one would put into vetting a child care provider should be put into finding responsible, trustworthy and kind caregivers for our sick, disabled and elderly loved ones.

According to the Administration on Aging, individuals with dementia are especially at risk for elder abuse. In fact, one study found that about 50 percent of people with dementia experience abuse.

For those unfamiliar with the local case, 37-year-old Connie Lynn Ogle, of Magalia, has been charged with a laundry list of crimes related to financial abuses of senior citizens, including an 82-year-old woman (see “Criminal caregiver?” Downstroke, page 8).

Ogle was hired by the victim’s son after claiming to have extensive experience with in-home health care, according to the Chico Police Department.

Investigators say she stole the woman’s personal information and opened credit cards in her name. She allegedly similarly defrauded at least nine other elderly people she’d been hired to care for and perhaps more that the police department is unaware of. Ogle’s also been charged with possession of marijuana for sale (85 pounds) and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

You read that right. She’s a felon. Her extensive record, which includes grand theft and multiple DUIs, is available for anyone to read on the Butte County Superior Court’s database at www.buttecourt.ca.gov.

The takeaway: Con artists are often slick talkers who seem trustworthy.

Those seeking care providers for the elderly and infirm shouldn’t rely on word of mouth or first impressions. Background checks and references are a must. In such situations, due diligence is always in order. □

Re “History of violence” (Cover story,

by Meredith J. Cooper, May 19): I was the fourth speaker on a panel of five voices for housing at a regional conference of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment in Sacramento last week. The third speaker’s calm and brave message of triumph over homelessness and domestic violence transformed my opening words into validating that domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness among women. I shared situations such as a woman visiting Butte County on a duck hunt who escaped brutal beatings at the hands of her boyfriend by going homeless.

The last speaker was a woman who was dressed for success while wearing the nervousness that comes with public speaking. Her story about domestic violence was so caustic that I winced seeing the mutual pain on the face of another speaker. I glanced at the 75 silent and similarly sobered individuals in attendance.

She finished her story to applause and the panel moderator noted how deftly she had overcome her nervousness and fear while sharing but a glimpse of the ghastly experiences that had shaped her as a volunteer and advocate for those in similar situations, women such as Angelica Weems—women braving brutally oppressive situations and seeking the safety, respect and dignity we all crave and deserve.

Doug LaMalfa is nervous. That’s what popped into my mind when I saw the hit piece targeting Joe Montes, the Chico Republican who’s vying for LaMalfa’s congressional seat. The political mailer—paid for by the Doug LaMalfa Committee—went out to a wide swath of voters.

I personally know Democrats, Republicans and those without a party preference who received it. That must have cost a chunk of change.

It includes the requisite trademarks of negative campaign literature: an unflattering photo of the opposition, inflammatory language, vague accusations. In a nutshell, the LaMalfa campaign is painting Montes as an outsider with a sketchy past who is supported by a shadowy political action committee (PAC). The implication is that Montes is a criminal. “Don’t be a victim,” the piece warns. “One word seems to follow Joe Montes wherever he works: fraud.” Yet, the mailer doesn’t directly accuse Montes of a single thing. It’s all innuendo.

The flier is so over the top it’s almost funny. But it isn’t a joke.

Speaking of which, this round of mudslinging reminds me of the shenanigans the LaMalfa campaign pulled four years ago when he was running against Republican Sam Aanestad, a former state senator and assemblyman based out of Grass Valley. Things got ugly.

Mark Spannagel, LaMalfa’s then chief of staff, established a website that called into question Aanestad’s qualifications as an oral surgeon and accused him of “misleading” voters, among other things. The site originally carried a disclaimer attributing it to another congressional candidate—a guy who had nothing to do with the effort. However, once under pressure from besmirched Aanestad, who subpoenaed the website’s host and learned that Spannagel had registered the domain name, a new disclaimer popped up in its place that labeled the site satirical.

To put it another way, when LaMalfa’s No. 1 hired gun got caught red-handed for potentially breaking election laws, he tried to play the website off as a joke (and protected under the First Amendment). Meanwhile, LaMalfa claimed he didn’t know anything about its creation. He went on to secure the congressional seat.

Democratic challenger Heidi Hall ran circles around him at debates two years ago during the general election, but LaMalfa handily held his seat in conservative Nor Cal. Fast-forward to today and the race against Montes is the first time LaMalfa has had to truly battle since his initial election to the House of Representatives in 2012.

The Montes-LaMalfa race has the potential to create a deep schism in the local Republican community. That’s because LaMalfa’s camp is also going after the political action committee supporting Montes, the Restore America Super PAC, and powerful local businessman Wayne Cook, Montes’ longtime mentor (see Howard Hardee’s report on page 8), for not properly filing federal campaign reports. Those claims do hold merit, but that’s not where this ends.

Dave Gilliard, a political strategist working for LaMalfa, further implies that Montes is illegally coordinating with the group.

Interestingly, Montes supporters seem surprised by our congressman’s latest sleazeball tactics, likely because they were on Team LaMalfa back when he took on Aanestad. Many of them have given money to candidates—LaMalfa included—in previous elections but are new to campaigning. To them, I say: Welcome to politics.

Bob Mulholland’s letter suggesting that Bernie Sanders supporters are primarily white males needs to be addressed.

Mulholland chose to ignore Sanders’ wins in Hawaii and Colorado, which have large ethnically diverse populations.

He decided not to mention that Sanders leads Hillary Clinton in support by younger women of all races. Mulholland did not mention that Sanders demonstrated for civil rights from 1962 on, while Rodham cum Clinton worked for anti-civil-rights candidate Barry Goldwater in 1964.

Candidates should be chosen by delegates earned through the popular vote, not by superdelegates who have influence beyond the voting public. Superdelegates are like modern-day Tammany Hall bosses, making deals behind closed doors. This superdelegate system should be eliminated along with Citizens United, returning us to a more democratic process.

Voting for POTUS Re “Endorsements” (Editorial, May 19): As a progressive, I was quite disturbed by the innuendo and thinly veiled finger-pointing in your recent editorial. Of course your publication has every right to offer a slate of candidates for the coming election. However, your rationale for endorsing Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton— rather than based on policy differences—seems to arise from the same rumor mills accessed by the current Republican frontrunner.

To be specific, you state: “We don’t trust Hillary Clinton. She’s tied to Wall Street. She came late to the party on supporting LGBT rights. Even President Obama has regrets over what happened in Libya during Secretary Clinton’s tenure.” The first three statements—sophomoric 6

at best—resemble the efforts of students who avoid actual research and substitute opinion for fact; thankfully, they are usually not in a position to influence the body politic. The latter statement with its horrifying connotations echoes the unsubstantiated, unethical muck Mr. Trump gathers from a variety of electronic pigsties and throws at any opposition he faces. Can we please just stick to the issues?

Voting for Hillary Clinton is a vote for rule by the military industrial complex and Wall Street.

The U.S. has spent trillions on wars and foreign “interventions” in pursuit of geopolitical goals in the Middle East, supported by Clinton, not supported by Bernie Sanders. The result of those trillions spent is hundreds of thousands dead, unimaginable pain and suffering, great destruction and environmental degradation, and refugees on a scale not seen since World War II. The result is also much more hate and instability. With Clinton’s enthusiastic support, the U.S. spent trillions to make the U.S. and the world less safe.

The Democratic establishment has hugely favored Clinton, while establishment media ignored or snarkily dismissed Sanders.

A hunk of moldy cheese could have gotten the votes Clinton has gotten, because it was predetermined that she was to be the Democratic nominee, and the establishment has been bulldozing her path to the coronation.

The strength of Sanders’ judgment, integrity and vision make him the most viable candidate to run against Donald Trump.

I will support Sanders through the convention, and I want his delegates to fight hard against the Clinton machine. The movement will continue.

‘Shameful action’ Re “Restrooms, recycling and more” (Newslines, by Robert Speer, May 19): It is easy to understand why the conservative-led City Council voted to ignore the Chapman/ Mulberry Neighborhood Plan in favor of Chico Scrap Metal (CSM). After all, Chapmantown

has an elementary school that is 70 percent minority, is home to minorities and low-income workers, and they can’t vote in city elections.

This reprehensible action was led by Councilman Andrew Coolidge, whose first council action was to present a motion to agendize discussion that would allow 11 years of noncompliance

by CSM to be shelved and permit them to remain at their present location. Because of his financial ties to the owners of CSM through consulting fees and campaign contributions, Coolidge’s motives should have been questioned, and, at the very least, once the motion moved forward, he should have demonstrated ethical behavior and recused himself from any discussion or action that involved CSM. And while a lot of current neighborhood businesses weren’t there in 1983, Chapman Elementary had been there for 30 years. Good luck to those organizing the referendum that will overturn the shameful action just displayed by the four conservative members of the City Council.

About a bill Re “Protest of Israel’s occupation under attack” (Guest comment, by Emily Alma, May 19): Thank you for printing Emily Alma’s Guest comment about the pro-Zionist lobby’s efforts to squelch freedom of speech and penalize those who participate in boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) to end the oppression of Palestinians. California’s Assembly Bill 2844 is intended to do exactly that—prohibit the state government from contracting with any business or entity that engages in BDS. For example, several years ago Carlos Santana refused to perform in Israel after learning about how Israel was oppressing Palestinians.

Would that mean that Santana would not be able to perform in California either, because no government agency could provide traffic control for his concerts?

Several years ago, Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association—College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) pulled $72 million out of Caterpillar Inc. because the company’s bulldozers (giant

weaponized bulldozers) are used to destroy Palestinian homes. It was a Caterpillar bulldozer that killed Rachel Corrie, an American student who believed she could save a Palestinian home from destruction by standing in its way.

The bulldozer ran her over twice and she died shortly afterward.

So how would AB 2844 affect California teachers invested with TIAA-CREF? Please tell Assemblyman James Gallagher to oppose AB 2844.

Trees are assets Every year for the last six years the city of Chico has cut down more trees than it planted. Chico claims public safety is our priority. Cancer claims about 9,000 Americans a week. Since trees protect us from cancer-causing ultraviolet rays, that makes our urban forest a public safety priority.

Trees improve property values.

A fellow citizen in front of the City Council, at a recent meeting, said a real estate agent told him the large mature trees in front of his house added $50,000 to the value of his home! Our City Tree Division used to be 11 people. Now there are only three! The city has thousands of empty tree-planting sites.

Chico Tree Advocates currently has a formal proposal in front of the council to hire three new tree crew workers and two part-timers.

After many years of minimal pruning and planting, our urban forest needs maintenance. ‘Inconsequential sentence’ Measure G is (an expensive) boondoggle. In January, Butte County supervisors moved to add a single sentence to our Right to Farm ordinance, a sentence specifically excluding cannabis farmers from its protections. Here’s the problem: Our Right to Farm ordinance offers protection for agricultural operations only when they comply with “all federal … statutes” So,

cannabis farmers were already excluded!

Despite public comments against the redundancy, the board voted to approve. Four weeks later, despite protesting signatures from over 13,000 voters, and in a move that Butte County Clerk/Recorder Candace Grubbs said would cost $30,000 to $40,000, Measure G was placed on the ballot. Director of Development Services Tim Snellings agreed that the existing ordinance excludes marijuana, but added: “We want to be as clear as we can.”

So taxpayers spend tens of thousands of dollars to add one inconsequential sentence—just for clarity. Today, cannabis farmers are excluded from the protections of the Right to Farm ordinance.

The day after the election— whether Measure G passes or fails—they still will be excluded.

Where is the common sense in this? Is this good government?

Does this benefit anyone? Should we meet such fiscal foolishness with anything other than disapproval? We should not. Vote no on Measure G. Jessica MacKenzie Chico

Frack talk It is a sad state of affairs when a few local citizens who should care about future generations in Butte County sell out by repeating corporate-energy lies about fracking.

They say it will never happen here because the practice is not done in sandstone (not true) and that there is no gas under Butte County (also not true). There are over 200 old gas wells in Butte County that will be fracked, not if, but when the price of gas goes back up.

History will judge fracking as a crime against humanity because of all the damage it has done by permanently poisoning aquifers across America and around the world.

MURDERER GETS 17 YEARS

Chicoan Christopher Swihart was sentenced earlier this month (May 12) to 17 years to life in prison after pleading no contest to second degree murder in the killing of Cass Edison.

He showed no remorse during the hearing, according to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

“Murder is always horrible, but this particular crime had a level of brutality we rarely see here,” Ramsey said. “The defendant stripped our victim of her humanity. The defendant treated her like so much refuse to be tossed away after his foul crime.”

The 55-year-old Edison’s body was located in a trailer Swihart owned in March 2015. He confessed to a friend that he’d lured Edison to his home with booze—she was homeless and an alcoholic. Edison apparently made Swihart angry, so he bound her and beat her until she died.

Swihart has three prior felony domestic violence convictions.

MISLEADING ‘VOTER GUIDES’

With the June 7 primary election looming, local conservatives are condemning several “voter guides” as confusing and misleading.

Appearing as official Republican endorsements, mailers from the California Republican Taxpayer Association and Spirit of Democracy California promote conservative candidates in the national, state and local elections. But the taxpayer association isn’t recognized by any Republican entity in the state, said Darrel Wilson, treasurer for the Butte County Republican Party, and its website makes clear that clients pay to be featured in the guides.

“I don’t want anybody to think that the central committee has anything to do with paying for that,” he said. Spirit of Democracy is a political action committee funded almost entirely by wealthy Berkeley physicist Charles Munger Jr.

CRIMINAL CAREGIVER?

A nine-month investigation into the identity theft of an 82-year-old woman led to the arrest of her caregiver and the seizure of drugs, guns and cash, according to a press release from the Chico Police Department.

Police began investigating Connie Ogle, 37, of Magalia, after a man reported several credit cards had been opened in his mother’s name. Detectives found evidence Ogle, a convicted felon, may have stolen the identities of at least 10 victims in Butte, Napa and Nevada counties.

Search warrants yielded evidence of identity theft, plus 85 pounds of processed marijuana, $27,000 in cash and multiple guns. Ogle (pictured) was arrested in Lake County and booked into Butte County Jail.

Inside the glossy, four-page pamphlet, readers are told that Montes is an outsider from Washington who’s backed by a “dark money super PAC,” spreads lies about LaMalfa on TV and radio and has a history of working for fraudulent employers. “Don’t be a victim of a Candidate Con!” it says on the back page.

For Montes personally, it was quite a nastygram to receive at his home in Chico.

“I got one, too,” he said by phone. “They weren’t smart enough to remove me from the mailing list.”

If nothing else, the mailer is a sign that the race to represent the 1st Congressional District is heating up heading into the June 7 primary election. The top two votegetters will run against each other in the general election in November. Montes intends to unseat LaMalfa, a fellow Republican.

There’s big money involved, too

According to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), LaMalfa’s campaign has raised $422,698, compared with $125,790 raised by Montes.

In his ads, Montes criticizes the incumbent congressman’s policies and voting record—including sending North State water resources south and approving federal farm subsidies. Conversely, Montes says that LaMalfa’s camp is attacking his personal integrity with misleading and fabricated claims.

“What do you do when you have a record you can’t defend? You attack the character of the person who’s beating you,” Montes said. “He’s lying to the public in an attempt to salvage his failing campaign.”

Take the assertion that Montes is a “Washington transplant,” which suggests that Montes is an establishment insider from Washington, D.C. Not so. Montes, 61, was born, raised and went to college in Northern California. He served as an administrative law judge in Washington (state) before moving to Chico a few years ago. And he’s never held political office.

Then there are the claims of fraud.

The flier says that Montes worked for the “office of a Washington lawyer suspended by the Washington Bar Association for committing fraud on two occasions.”

“I never worked for a law office other

than my own,” said Montes, adding that the law firm in question happened to share the same building as his. “It had nothing to do with me.”

Indeed, a search of Montes’ record with the Washington State Bar Association reveals no disciplinary history whatsoever.

LaMalfa points to something more substantial regarding the political action committee running ads critical of the incumbent congressman and supportive of Montes. To date, voters have been in the dark on money the Restore America Super PAC is spending. A call to the FEC’s press office in Washington, D.C., confirmed that Restore America hasn’t filed any expenditure reports since forming on April 25.

But, again, that’s not directly associated with Montes. Federal law requires that political campaigns and PACs are run independently and don’t collude on strategy. Any wrongdoing on the part of Restore America, therefore, doesn’t fall at his feet.

“I have not worked with the super PAC,” Montes said. “We’ve drawn clear lines about having discussions of how I’m organizing my campaign. I refuse to go down that road.”

Who is, as LaMalfa’s flier put it, the “dark

money donor” behind Restore America?

Turns out it’s Wayne Cook, the 73-yearold real estate mogul who owns the Hotel

Water wars Diamond and AAA Properties in downtown Chico. He’s been a friend and mentor to Montes since coaching him in wrestling in the early 1970s at Truckee High School. When Montes moved to Chico about three years ago, Cook hired him as general manager of AAA Properties. He currently rents a house to Montes and his wife, Cindy.

Cook is running the Restore America Super PAC with local businessmen Tim Tittle, owner of tax preparation service Tittle and Co. LLP, and attorney and realtor Michael McCrady. Cook and Thomas Dauterman, owner of Thomas Manufacturing Co., have poured a total of $110,000 into Restore America, Cook said.

“There is nothing dark about us or our money,” he said. “We’re not these mysterious figures working in the background. When we put money in this PAC, we were very aware it was going to be recorded publicly.”

This is the first time Cook has been directly involved with a political campaign, and he’s shocked by the “sleazy crap” coming out of LaMalfa’s camp.

“Call me naïve, call me ignorant, but I am stunned at the degree of dishonesty and misrepresentation that LaMalfa and his advisers would dare put forth,” he said. The flier, he added, “is the ugliest piece of propaganda I have ever seen in the United States.”

In a separate, similar flier, LaMalfa’s camp says that Montes’ campaign has an illegal working relationship with Restore America based on the claim that the super PAC’s headquarters are in the same building as Montes’ office with AAA Properties.

“This is circumstantial evidence suggesting they’re in close coordination with each other,” said David Gilliard, a campaign consultant for LaMalfa. “It’s all very suspicious.”

However, the FEC’s website lists Restore America’s headquarters under the address of Tittle’s office on The Esplanade—not AAA Properties at 331 Wall St., where the Montes for Congress Committee is headquartered.

Regarding LaMalfa’s accusations of the super PAC withholding campaign spending reports, Cook admits no wrongdoing beyond being a political neophyte. The FEC doesn’t have expense reports on file because Cook and company missed the first deadline to do so. “It was a gaffe, but nothing intentional,” he said. “We’ll make every deadline from now on.” □

Paradise residents attempt to recall PID board members over rate hike

ack in January, a group of Paradise

Irrigation District customers got together to protest a proposed rate hike. It was unfair, they argued, that they were being asked to pay more while also being required to consume less water. Plus, they said, district management wasn’t doing its job—why pay for costly upgrades when other options are available?

What they learned was that their voices had power. They organized a successful protest, which required support of 50 percent (plus one) of district customers, that blocked the rate hike in its tracks. Unfortunately for them, a new hike was proposed and quickly approved—trying to muster up another protest of that magnitude so soon was too much.

“That first rate plan was confusing to the public,” said Lorene Eagleson, one of the protest organizers. “Then they brought in this new rate plan that’s actually higher and said, ‘We’ll give you something you’ll understand.’ It was very insulting.”

Insulting enough for Eagleson and other like-minded PID customers to launch a recall effort aimed at two board directors: Larry Duncan and Sep Carola. They also oppose Ken Hunt, but he’s up for re-election in November anyway. Those three, Eagleson said, tend to vote in line with each other and with whatever the district manager, George Barber, recommends—rather than listening to the ratepayers.

“The board of directors is broken,” the petition reads. “It operates without recognizing the community is PID’S employer.”

A rate increase was originally pitched in January, when the district told customers it was on the verge of bankruptcy if it didn’t bring in more revenue. Under that proposal, which was shot down by protest, there was a tiered system based on how much water customers used. It was confusing, Barber acknowledged, because it required people to choose how much water they anticipated using. The current system is a single-rate system with a fixed service charge and no tiers based on usage, meaning those who consume very little will be paying more each month.

“That first rate increase confused them, and what it was was we were trying to alleviate the bad effects of [state law] that won’t allow us to give any restitution to lowincome people—making the field equal hurts low-income people,” Duncan explained.

“But they turned that down, and we came back with another rate and, unfortunately, it will hurt low-income people more than the first one would have.”

SIFT ER Off the streets

The Butte Interagency Narcotics Task Force released its annual numbers last week for arrests and seizures in 2015. Overall, drug-related arrests were down slightly, from 280 in 2014 to 273. The majority of those arrests took place in Chico and were for felony violations. In addition, 41 percent were for methamphetamine. The chart below shows the top 10 drug seizures, in terms of street value.

Barber pointed out that the district did implement a program to help low-income customers. About 300 people already have signed up and there is space for more, he said.

Beyond the rate increase, Eagleson said, petitioners are upset about the reason for the increase, which is what she calls unnecessary expenditures by the district. Those include pay bumps for district employees, a new district building and automated meters. They also include a planned water recycling facility, which the district maintains is needed to comply with state Environmental Protection Agency standards.

Eagleson said petitioners are hoping to gather enough signatures—3,300—by June 17. That’s the cutoff date for setting the recall for November. If they miss that deadline, they’ll have to hold a special election, which would be costly for the district, and which all parties would like to avoid.

Alonzo Robles-Morales was shot and killed in Gridley during a drive-by shooting that involved two local gangs. His death was an eye-opener for local attorney Ron Reed. A public defender for 30 years, Reed had previously represented some of the Norteños and Sureños involved in the shooting in cases of lesser crimes.

“That killing and gang involvement affected me a lot because I knew every single one of the people involved,” said Reed, who works closely with at-risk youth.

“I just thought about how senseless this was, and I felt like I really had to do something to wake some of the kids up before it gets too late.”

Robles-Morales’ death, for which three young men are serv-

ing life sentences, inspired Reed to produce his now-finished documentary, Who Are You Going to Be? Don’t Let a Gang Decide for You. “Professionally, I felt like I had failed in some ways,” Reed said.

“I said, ‘Am I doing the best job possible?’ Were there more things I should’ve been doing to wake up the parents or get the kids’ attention?”

The movie centers around the Gridley shooting and the people who were there. It includes interviews with former gang members and law enforcement officials and showcases the effects local gangs have had on their lives. At a free screening last Sunday (May 22) at the El Rey Theatre, Reed introduced the film by explaining the

importance of reaching kids while they are young and telling stories they might identify with.

One of the former gang members in the video is Jose Martinez, now an associate pastor with Jordan Crossing Ministries in Oroville. Martinez had spent most of his teenage years in and out of juvenile hall because of his involvement in the Big Orland Trece, a Sureño gang based in Orland. Martinez said being a part of the documentary and sharing his stories are important ways to connect with young people and may even give hope to those involved in gangs or their families.

“Young teenagers are getting involved in gangs because they’re believing lies; they’re being misled,” Martinez said. “For kids who

“It’s my hope to reach some of

them by showing them this,” Reed said. “But it’s only a device, an introduction. Parents need to talk to their kids, and they need to know who their kids are hanging out with, and they need to be much more aggressive in making sure they don’t get involved in the wrong kind of crowd.”

Reed has made several other documentaries through his production company, Let My Story Change Your Story. In the past, he’s tackled such topics as drug issues, homelessness and the juvenile justice system. As a defense attorney, he’s been able to build connections with people who subsequently have become willing to share their stories.

“The reason I make videos is because I’m really interested in finding out how you communicate with teenagers,” he said. “Some people say you don’t; it’s impossible. An old guy trying to talk to a 16-year-old is difficult, but my son said, ‘If you want to communicate with teenagers, you have to feed them, give them music or show them videos.’ I chose the videos.”

David McKay, director of secondary education at Chico Unified School District, has worked with Reed in the past to raise awareness about gang-related issues in the community. He said this documentary helps with the two most important aspects of keeping people out of gangs: prevention and intervention.

“The power of this film is that it’s first-person; it’s people telling their story,” he said. “It’s not preachy or telling people they’re a bad person for being involved with this. Reaching out to kids and families early on is important, and giving them alternatives to hanging out and waiting to belong to something that’s going to have a lot of catches later on.”

impacts of the local homeless population on Enloe, with the caveat that such data is incomplete and hard to obtain because hospitals don’t specifically ask patients whether they are homeless.

“Everyone gets treated, no matter what,” she emphasized.

To gather the data, hospital staff pulled information from patients who listed local shelters, such as the Torres Community Shelter, or wrote “homeless” on their intake papers.

Based on that limited data, 2,835 homeless individuals checked into Enloe from July 1, 2012, to June 30, 2013, not accounting for multiple visits by the same patient.

The total charges incurred by the hospital after receiving Medi-Cal or other payments was $10.2 million. Between those same dates in 2014-15, the hospital saw 3,810 homeless patients, with $14.2 million in unpaid charges.

Wilkinson said the number of patients who visit Enloe, homeless or otherwise, is on the rise. The hospital is licensed to fill 228 beds, and a few years ago averaged about 160 patients daily. The average today is closer to 200, and the hospital recorded its highest monthly census numbers ever in February, with an average of 206 patients.

“We’re bursting at the seams,” she said.

It’s likely most Gallup respondents have some combination of a job, a home and a health care plan, which prompts a question: How can members of the homeless population, who often lack the most basic resources, get the health care they need to survive?

In her role as case management supervisor at Enloe Medical Center, Amanda Wilkinson comes face-to-face with impoverished people attempting to access health care on a daily basis. Wilkinson and Oroville Hospital CEO Robert Wentz were invited to speak at last month’s Homeless Symposium, a gathering of stakeholders organized by the Butte Countywide Homeless Continuum of Care, to discuss the impact of homelessness on local hospitals (see “All hands on deck,” Newslines, April 21). “The homeless population has so many barriers already that I sometimes wonder how they can find the motivation to navigate something that can seem so insurmountable,” Wilkinson said of the health care system.

“You have people who are saying, ‘I’m worried about where I’m going to sleep tonight,’ not ‘I’m worried about how my diabetes will be in a month.’ They walk out of the emergency department or after being admitted to the hospital for a few days feeling better, with their symptoms under control, but end up having to revisist for the same condition.”

Some of the access issues homeless individuals experience are not having a phone number or address for staff to contact them

regarding follow-up care, a lack of transportation and finding skilled nursing facilities that will accept them as patients despite lack of insurance or funds. A broader issue is the general scarcity of primary care physicians.

The lack of access to follow-up or preventative care leads to heavy impacts on emergency departments and prompt-care facilities, Wilkinson explained.

“One of the highest concerns we face are the high-frequency [patients] that we see.

In some of the most extreme cases, we’re seeing them on a daily or every-other-day basis,” she said.

He had been abused, homeless, divorced, arrested, stolen from, hospitalized, and “abandoned by my kids.” Ben admitted: “I have no idea why the good lord has kept me here this long but it must be for a reason.”

Ben had managed to stay sober for a couple weeks before he started counseling because he understood “that if I have one more drink, it is all over. I might as well start digging my grave, because I know it is going to kill me.”

This sobriety brought with it a debilitating discomfort as he recognized all the feelings and consequences of behaviors that he had avoided for so long. Ben eventually found himself scared even to leave the television set “because my anxiety is too much for me to bear.” Ben would stay awake

until three or four in the morning to avoid the time to think between going to bed and falling asleep. He felt as if he was in “a living hell.”

Ben was encouraged to recognize his bravery in deciding to get sober and face the painful feelings both now and throughout his past. At each session, Ben worked to resolve some new aspect of his experience: working to repair relationships, coming to terms with past experiences, and managing anxious feelings. We did all the things that you do in counseling: we talked about how he felt, how he would like to be, and how to move forward.

Ben recently celebrated his first full year of sobriety and he has reconnected with much of his family. Ben admits that the counseling work has been “some of the hardest stuff I have ever done” and, initially, he was “terrified to start cleaning up my messes.” Still, his continuing courage, resolve, and commitment, help him to recognize the progress he has made and how far he has come from wanting to give up.

HEALTHLINES Wentz also spoke at the symposium and reported similar issues.

“When people talk about getting homeless people off the streets, a lot of times they mean getting them into the hospital,” he said. “A lot them end up being admitted because of their living situation, and a great deal of them don’t have medical situations other than their psychiatric condition.

“It costs the hospital about $1,500 to $2,000 for every patient that comes in, and that’s a conservative estimate,” he said. “That’s a couple million dollars spent on homelessness right there.”

The 12 most common reasons for

homeless individuals to visit Enloe’s emergency department were diabetes; alcohol-related issues; mental health/suicidal ideation; drug abuse; respiratory issues; mouth and teeth pain; back pain; general symptioms; chest pain; injury; and prescription refills.

Wilkinson said the list isn’t much different from what causes housed individuals to seek medical attention, but that all of the conditions can be exacerbated by living on the streets. A patient’s homeless status also can lead to longer hospital stays.

“We’re obligated to provide a safe discharge plan, which looks a

lot different for [a housed person] than someone who is homeless,” she said. “We’re not going to send someone into the streets when it’s not safe for their health. We take the time to figure out the best solution.”

To that end, Wilkinson said Enloe partners with Behavioral Health, as well as local service organizations and shelters, to better serve the homeless population.

The hospital has case management and social workers assigned to every unit, and more on duty in the emergency department from 7:30 to 1 a.m., to help homeless patients connect with various social services. She said Enloe provides basic assistance to homeless patients, like bus fare, some medicines and medical supplies.

“Our philosophy is really to build bridges and partnerships to strengthen the safety net we’re trying to provide,” she said, adding that the symposium was a good start to cooperation between agencies and looking at homelessness from all vantage points. She would ideally like to see a local coalition dedicated to addressing the health care needs of the homeless population formed in the near future.

“I feel like there is some movement, that there is actual connection and collaboration happening.” □

and students. As director of facilities for the district, she was surveying them in preparation for a new facilities master plan.

One thing stuck out in her mind: There was an overwhelming concern about the playing fields. Every campus expressed problems with gopher holes and the issues they caused with physical education programs and playground activities.

“The students couldn’t really run without tripping or hitting a gopher hole,” Kistle said. “That item was raised when we were doing our master plan, so we needed to come up with some solutions.”

The district first tried to eradicate the gophers by trapping and killing them, which was somewhat successful. But many people didn’t want to see the gophers killed, Kistle said, and district rules prevent poison near school sites. So she went looking for more humane and natural ways to deal with the gopher problem. A few local farmers suggested to her that bringing in natural predators, like owls, could help control the gopher population. During her research, Kistle found out that even one owl at a school site could make a significant difference.

So, how to attract owls—in particular, barn and screech owls—to CUSD campuses? Nesting boxes. Owls don’t build their own nests, according to the Hungry Owl Project, a nonprofit based in Marin County whose goal is to protect California’s owl populations by increasing habitat and decreasing the use of poisons in their food (i.e., gophers). Historically, they have found natural habitat in tree cavities or old barns— but those areas are in decline.

“It is our aim to reduce the need for dangerous rodenticides while promoting the use of barn owls and other natural predators for pest control,” the HOP website reads. “It can truly be a ‘win win’ situation. Landowners benefit from the pest control provided by owls and the owls get safe locations to nest and safe habitat to hunt.”

Last fall, students in Matt McGuire’s

construction tech class at Fair View High School began choosing designs for and building owl boxes. The materials were paid for with funds from Measure E, a $78 million bond measure passed in 2012 that sets aside money for safety and security projects.

McGuire, whose classes have been involved in community projects including partnering with Habitat for Humanity, said he feels it’s important for his regional occupational program (ROP) shop class to get real-world experiences and gain technical skills, plus help support the community.

“It’s all about giving kids an entry-level knowledge in the industry so they can have experience if that’s something they want to do when they graduate or find some summertime work,” McGuire said.

Daniel Williams, a junior at Fair View, joined the elective shop class as a way to get specialized training. Inside the high school’s shop, the 16-year-old said that working on a project like this is a good way to develop skills. He’s hoping to join the automotive industry when he leaves high school, so having access to tools and the ability to work

with his hands was important to him. Plus, the project serves a good purpose.

“It gives a lot, it’s helping out and it’s a big project for the class,” Williams said.

“I’ve seen a bunch of gophers and our field is just toast.”

In March, after months of building and planning, McGuire and his class made their way out to the school sites to scope out the best trees suitable for the boxes and begin installing them. So far, they’ve traveled to almost every campus across the district.

Each school is receiving two boxes, and they should be finished with the entire district by Friday (May 27). Then they’ll just have to wait for the owls to come.

“It doesn’t mean that because we build them they will come,” Kistle said, “but we’re hoping that they’ll find our boxes and decide to nest there, eventually.”

For McGuire, who’s taught at Fair View for the past 13 years, community service projects instill important values in his students. They teach them the importance of giving back to their local communities and give them a sense of pride and purpose in their work.

“A project like this is cool for the kids because they get to help the district and give back to the district that was here for them,” McGuire said. “Whenever they go by a school, they can say, ‘Hey, that’s ours; we built those.’”

Having students take ownership of the owl box project from beginning to end was important for Kistle. It was a small enough

project that the students could each see it through from designing, to choosing the materials, to building, to installing.

“When I get the phone call that industry partners hired a student of mine, that’s why I do it,” McGuire said. “My success is when kids call me years down the road and say thanks and that they’re still in the industry and that they love it.” □

Brad Meyer has built his career on training dogs. As a law enforcement officer for more than 15 years with Lassen and Butte County sheriff’s offices, he’s logged thousands of hours working with multiple furry partners and is credited with starting Lassen County’s K-9 unit.

Last year, he branched out on his own and opened Meyer’s Police K-9 Training in Chico, which sells dogs as well as trains them specifically for law enforcement. What sort of personality are you looking for in a police dog?

We want to make sure that the dog is social, so we can be around the dog, pet the dog and other people and other police officers can be around the dogs. But also, in that same manner, the dog has to have those characteristics to be put in stressful situations and carry through with the job that he has to do.

What are the dogs trained to do?

In law enforcement, you’re gonna train them to find the odor of the

human. So when we tell a dog to go out and look for somebody, we are telling them to look for that odor that that person is putting off. We also train them to look for explosives, narcotics and cadavers.

What dog breeds do you train?

The main image when people think about a police dog is the German shepherd. We have a German shepherd right now that we are getting ready to sell to a law enforcement agency. But we also train Belgian Malinois—it’s like a small breed of the German shepherd.

Your first police dog was a Lab. Is that unusual?

search and rescue dogs or narcotics dogs. That was what my first dog was, a narcotics dog. Their willingness to go out and search is just insane. That’s what we want.

What sorts of situations have you been in with your dogs?

I’ve put my dogs in a lot of different situations that are extremely frightening for a dog—you can only imagine. We have had car deployments where people are inside of cars and will not come out and the dog jumps in through the window.

Attic deployments, underneath houses, outside areas of berry bushes for miles and miles. Once the dogs are in that drive mode, their drive takes over and they just continue doing what they do.

What a week! I’d like to congratulate all the recent Chico State graduates.

This is an exciting time. I remember vividly that feeling of simultaneous exhilaration of newfound freedom and fear of having to be an actual adult.

If that’s you right now, don’t worry too much. The real world sucks sometimes, but it can also be pretty great. It is exactly what you make of it.

One of the cool things about living in a college town is being able to extend that student experience far beyond four years. And no, I’m not just talking about drink specials (though those are nice, too). I got the chance about a year and a half ago to hear former CIA analyst Ray McGovern speak on campus on the topic of government surveillance and the Fourth Amendment. He was fascinating, but the message he sent was scary: We are all being watched, my friends. The government may not be concerned about all of us, but it’s collecting our emails, our Facebook profiles, our Internet search history. Just in case.

That speech stuck with me, and when I first heard about Ananobox, a Chico-based company—funded by Kickstarter and Indiegogo, by the way— that focuses on Internet security, privacy and freedom, I thought it was genius. To put it simply, “The Original” Anonabox ($79.99) is a small device that plugs into your router to increase the privacy of your online activities.

Chico entrepreneur August Germar turned the company from a dream in 2014 into reality nearly overnight (with a few hiccups) and Anonabox was acquired by tech holding company Sochule Inc. last year. Now it employs 13 people and completes all its assembly right here in Chico. And just last week, the company partnered with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner to be a part of Australian Privacy Awareness Week.

“The theme of Privacy Awareness Week 2016 is privacy in your hands,” the commissioner said in a press release. “For businesses and government agencies that means privacy is part of good governance and made a key priority. For individuals, it means understanding your rights, making choices and taking charge of your privacy in the digital age.” Amen, brother. aseball can be frustrating and unpredictable, sometimes even cruel. Batters mostly fail. In the major leagues, .400 is the gold standard for a hitter’s on-base percentage (OBP). Another way to spin it: All-stars don’t reach first base 60 percent of the time.

A player needs a strong mental approach to be successful and preserve his psyche. Josh Falco, starting right fielder for the Chico State Wildcats, recorded a .410 OBP this year. It’s no fluke. He takes batting practice nearly every day and, over the years, he’s learned how to handle failure.

“My overall philosophy is to simplify everything,” he said. “I tell myself to keep calm, stay on top of the ball and hit it to right-center field. My body knows what to do; I just try and shut my mind down.”

Otherwise, Falco, who will play under bright lights this summer, might overthink things. The lineup isn’t set, but on June 4, he’ll most likely play when the Chico Heat takes the diamond against the Marysville Gold Sox at Nettleton Stadium and highlevel summertime baseball returns to Chico after a fiveyear hiatus.

It’s won’t be exactly the same as the defunct Heat and Outlaws teams, which were both part of independent leagues— professional organizations unaffiliated with Major League Baseball that drew a mix of aspiring athletes and those nearing retirement. This time around, under the newly formed, all-wooden-bat Great West League, the players are collegiate, not professional, and subject to the standards of the NCAA system (read: don’t get paid).

We’re still talking serious baseball.

The 30-man roster—half position players, half pitchers—is filled out by players from big-time baseball programs such as Arizona State, Dixie State University in Utah, Hawaii Pacific University and UC Davis, to name a few. Three players were recruited locally: Falco, relief pitcher Stuart Bradley and Kyle Kramer, an infielder, are Chico State Wildcats.

Heat Coach Fred Ludwig, also the coach of Pleasant Valley High School’s baseball team, says the level of play will match and perhaps exceed that of the old teams.

“I think it’ll be better,” he said.

“The kids on this team want to get drafted [into MLB]; they’re not on the tail end of their careers. All these kids want to play at the next level and they have the passion to do so.”

For players, the Great West League serves as a possible stepping-stone.

MLB scouts will be watching, Ludwig said. What’s more, the Heat is partially owned by Pat Gillick, a National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee and current president of the Philadelphia Phillies—definitely a good connection.

And, yeah, every kid who swings a bat imagines playing big league baseball, but that’s not such a crazy thought for top college players.

“That’s the dream, right? To go as far as you can,” Falco said. “It’ll be a step up playing for the Heat, and getting drafted would be the next step.”

He’s excited to play in front of big home crowds and be part of the production at Nettleton Stadium. Indeed, aside from the league’s new format, much looks to be the same as when the Heat played before—wacky promotions, hot dogs and Cracker Jacks, and

the dragon mascot, Heater, dancing on the dugouts and racing kids around the bases between innings.

Oh, yeah, also: fireworks.

But hold the show. There

are no guarantees in baseball or business.

Previous teams have tried to stick in Chico and whiffed. Is this one different?

Well, Steve Nettleton, the donor for whom Chico State’s stadium is named, is still involved. He and his wife, Kathy, are co-owners with Gillick.

The Nettletons were owners during the Heat’s original run from 1997 to 2002.

That team led the Western Baseball League in attendance each year but, despite the strong local support, the whole league fell apart.

“The issue was that the surrounding teams couldn’t support themselves,” said Hunter Hampton, the Heat’s new general manager. “As these teams disappeared, the Heat didn’t have anybody to play, and the rug got pulled out from under them.”

Chico went without professional baseball until the Chico Outlaws began operations in 2005 as part of the Golden Baseball League. Chico took to the Outlaws and Rascal, their raccoon mascot, as the club led the league in average home-game attendance and made the playoffs that first year. They were league champions twice and moved a host of players on to MLB, including Daniel Nava, who hit a grand slam on the first pitch he saw with the Boston Red Sox. the North American League, which struggled with the financial and logistical hurdles of coordinating travel between teams as far afield as Illinois, Canada and Hawaii. It folded quietly that year.

Hampton believes the third time’s the charm. He anticipates at least covering the cost of travel, lodging, leasing the stadium and paying the staff (the team has hired more than 80 part-time employees) by the end of the season.

“We have to generate enough revenue through corporate sponsorships, ticket sales, concessions and advertising to supplement our costs,” he said. “Hopefully, at the end of the year, we’ve sold more than we spend. It’s pretty simple.”

There are several points in his favor.

From a business perspective, recruiting college players is a major financial relief, he said. Now, ownership doesn’t have to pay 30 players $10,000 or $15,000 each.

“That’s a lot of revenue we don’t have to generate,” he said. “The model itself is a much better one that’s going to enable us to come back year after year.”

Travel expenses will be more manageable, as well. The six teams in the Great West League—the Portland Pickles, Medford Rogues, Lodi Crushers, Sacramento Stealth, Marysville Gold Sox and Chico Heat—are all based in cities more or less along the I-5 corridor. The league will stay close-knit as it adds more teams in coming years, Hampton said.

Hampton also points to leadership’s breadth of experience. Great West League President Ken Wilson, a former broadcaster for the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics, helped launch the West Coast League in the Pacific Northwest using the collegiate model. Since establishment in 2005, it’s thrived and expanded from six to more than a dozen teams.

In terms of structure, the Great West League is a carbon copy. “Ken Wilson has done this before,” Hampton said. “He’s built a successful league.”

The owners, which includes the sports ownership group CSH International, have a track record of success. Gillick, for example, is a former general manager of the Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies. The owners have final say in all business decisions, Hampton said.

Gillick, a Chico native, owns two World Series rings and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011. He’s visited Chico from his home in Seattle a handful of times leading up to opening night. During an interview, he said he’s supporting the Heat in memory of 20

his late father, Larry, who was a professional pitcher before serving as Butte County’s sheriff for 32 years and had “very strong feelings for Chico.” (Larry’s obituary in the Los Angeles Times noted that he once “felled a fleeing criminal with a well-aimed rock.”) The Little League field by Chico Municipal Airport is named in his honor.

“This feels like the right thing to do,” he said. “Young guys on their way up, hopefully we can improve their skills over the summer and they can move on, if they want to be professional players. If not, it’ll be good to remember their summer playing baseball here in Chico.”

For the young men who want

to spend all summer on buses, sleeping in hotels and eating road food, it’ll be a taste of professional baseball’s daily grind. The schedule is packed—57 games in 70 days.

“It’s going to be like Bull Durham,” said Ludwig. “When we finish a game in Portland, get on a bus and play again the next night in Lodi, these kids are going to be feeling it. So will I.” Ludwig was unabashedly excited while discussing the roster, which he’s spent months constructing. He believes fans will adore Cameron Olson, a left-handed first baseman and designated hitter for the UC Davis Aggies. In April, he became the first Aggies player in 15 years to hit for the cycle—singling, doubling, tripling and homering in the same game.

“He’s going to be a crowd-pleaser,” Ludwig said. “He hits bombs.” (A “bomb,” in baseball lingo, refers to a towering home run that, once it’s reached its steep downward trajectory, appears to have been dropped from a low-flying plane.)

strong and has played error-free defense this season. There’s his teammate, Miles Bice, who “comes off the bench in crucial moments when they need a hitter,” said Ludwig. There’s Tanner Tokunaga, a speedy, 5-foot-7, 150-pound outfielder from Hawaii Pacific University who obviously needs a creative nickname.

But don’t forget the Chico State guys.

Ludwig is confident that Bradley, the relief pitcher, is going to find a new level of success in the wooden bat league with his funky three-quarters throwing motion.

“That’s his advantage; his ball really moves,” Ludwig said. “He’s going to get some ground balls and broken bats.”

Bradley throws a two-seam fastball, which tails into a right-handed batter, as well as a slider that breaks the opposite direction.

“I just try to keep the ball down in the zone,” he said. “I work on hitting my locations, mixing up the movement and hopefully getting weak contact.” He might start a few games, but will mostly come out of the bullpen to hold leads in late innings.

Kramer, the freshman infielder, is more of a mystery. Ludwig hasn’t seen him in game action (he’s redshirting at Chico State, which means practicing with the team but not playing) and is relying on the word of his friend, George Horton, the head coach at the University of Oregon. At 19 years old, Kramer led the Ducks’ fall practice season in hitting against left-handed pitching. The team, however, had too many players heading into the regular season, so Kramer transferred to Chico State at the beginning of the spring semester.

He came with a strong recommendation from Horton.

“He’s athletic. He can play. He just needs to get his reps and get stronger,” Ludwig said. “He’s got plus-speed, which is a huge factor. Looking at those fall stats, he can swing it, too.”

Falco, the outfielder who gets on base, is a grizzled veteran by comparison at 21 years old. He plays smart—grinding out at-bats and waiting for pitches to square up—and he plays old-school—hard slides into second base and taking pitches in the ribs.

“He’s kind of mean,” Ludwig said.

“Don’t let him fool you. He’s got a fiery side I’ve seen multiple times, and I like it. He’s going to be a leader.”

Bradley has been pitching

since he was 4 years old, when his father built a mound in the backyard of his home in Yuba City. Like many players in his position, he’d love to get drafted and pursue professional baseball once his college career is over, but he’s realistic about his chances.

He isn’t gifted with a high-octane fastball that lights up radar guns and makes MLB scouts salivate. Bradley’s been clocked as high as 88 mph, but consistently sits around 85 mph.

“Scouts are looking for the 95 mph fastball, young kids who throw absolute gas,” he said. “I don’t have that.” In such a skillsoriented sport, he says, selecting players based on physical tools alone isn’t necessarily fair. “As long as you get outs, who cares how hard you throw? Some kids get drafted but don’t really know how to throw strikes.”

He’s developing a third pitch, a splitfinger fastball, and wants to make better use of his lower half to gain velocity. “I hope to throw harder, to get up to 90 mph,” he said.

a dominant pitcher at the next level.”

If not, Bradley has a backup plan. He’s earning a degree in exercise physiology and plans to pursue a career as a physical trainer for professional or college baseball teams. He wants to stay around the game any way he can.

The prospect of switching focus after investing so much time and effort into a sport can be daunting, even for a freshman like Kramer who has yet to play an official college game. He, too, intends to see how far he can take baseball, but keeps a grounded perspective.

“In most people’s lives, you’re probably going to have to go a different route than what you originally planned, whether it’s baseball or switching majors or whatever,” he said. “I think it’s best that I just appreciate what I have right now and not worry about stuff I can’t control.”

Falco has already faced life after baseball.

While playing for Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, before he transferred to Chico State, he dove for a ball and popped his left shoulder out of its socket, resulting in a near360-degree tear of his labrum (cartilage in the shoulder joint). After surgery, he focused on working out his lower body during rehabilitation, but then pinched a nerve in his back while lifting weights.

“So, my arm was in a sling, I was unable to walk for a few weeks,” he recalled, “I was thinking, ‘Am I even going to play again?’”

Now healthy, when he’s on the field, he doesn’t take it for granted.

“Each day I’m out there, I thank God for the opportunity to play,” he said. “It’s tough to remind yourself every day, but I think it’s the right frame of mind: Enjoy the game, take a step at a time.”

Players will trickle into town

teams advance. Those who are on teams making deep runs in the College World Series won’t join the Heat until the second week of the season. (The players will stay with local host families.) Before suiting up for opening day, the Heat’s players will practice together only twice.

Then it’s show time.

Dino Corbin will be there. Now with Deer Creek Broadcasting Co., he was a big fan of the original team and, 14 years later, is still enthusiastic.

“It was a wonderful Chico family experience from the get-go,” he said. “My mom and dad loved going to the games; my sons grew up going to the games and were bat boys.”

There are great expectations for this season and beyond, Corbin said, and he believes the new regime and players won’t disappoint. However, he might be most excited about the venue. Taken altogether, the scene—evening light on the trees, grandstand and diamond, trains passing behind the wall in right field—is a slice of Americana that Corbin describes as “a moving Norman Rockwell painting.”

For Hampton, who was a fan before he was helping lead the organization, the experience is less about the game itself and more about throwing a party for the community.

“When I think back on the Chico Heat, I don’t remember who hit the home run or won the game. I remember my daughter running up and down the stairs, the fireworks, the kid who did backflips off the dugout— the stuff that happened around the game. It’s not about baseball, it’s about bringing everyone together and seeing our neighbors.

“There just happens to be a baseball game being played.” Ω

864-2525 Around the time his son was born, Williams sought the advice of fellow Nor Cal musician and father Joe Craven about living the life of a family man and traveling musician.

“He told me, ‘I never apologize to my kids about leaving and being gone.

I’m showing them what you should do, and that’s pursue what makes you feel alive,’” Williams said. “I’m setting an

example for them to follow their dreams.”

Williams’ dream has had him splitting time between playing his original tunes at bars, cafes and parties, and performing often more lucrative gigs doing long sets of covers at casinos. But his own music is the focus right now, and next week (June 3) he’s releasing his third album of originals, San Francisco, with a show at The Rendezvous.

San Francisco is a departure from his first two more traditional singersongwriter releases—She Is (2012) and The Stage Fright EP (2013). While still rooted in his solo, folky approach, the 10-song album pushes a lot of Williams’ musical boundaries. His huge voice, along with his acoustic guitar and ukulele, provides the base, but the beautiful songs are impressively fleshed out with layers of instruments and orchestration, with synth, piano, electric guitars, drums and upright bass added. Williams attributes the new sound to producer Chris Keene, frontman of the of local indierock band Surrogate and owner/engineer of Cutters Cathedral recording studios where the album was recorded.

“He’d shoot me an email with early mixes, and the first one just blew me out of the water,” Williams said. “I removed myself from it, and I had to think, ‘If I heard this on the radio, what would I think of it?’ And I realized, I loved it. It’s just weird because I’m not used to that being me.”

The new album, Williams said, is a good a balance of who he once was as an artist

and who he’s becoming. San Francisco will be played from start to finish at the album-release show, which will feature opening sets by singer/songwriter Hannah Jane Kile and Surrogate, whose members will also serve as Williams’ backing band.

Williams feels that he’s evolved a lot as a singer and a songwriter in the couple of years since releasing Stage Fright.

Part of the maturity comes from dealing with some serious issues in his life.

The title track is a song about losing his grandmother to Alzheimer’s disease. The song “It’s OK” is about his wife facing postpartum depression after their son was born. There are songs about outgrowing his religious beliefs, waiting for his daughter to be born, plus a few love songs sprinkled in as well.

“These songs are more real and much more honest,” Williams said. “I’ve tried to be more vulnerable, not for the sake of being exposed, but for honest, open communication, which is what songwriting should be.”

As Williams looks to the future, he believes his new record has a chance to have widespread appeal and is focusing on getting it to as many ears as possible, including planning to tour the country.

And as he begins scheduling his time on the road, he’s keeping his mind on his top priority: family.

“If my family doesn’t come with me, I’ll do a week or two, then come back; I won’t be gone for six months,” Williams said. “I couldn’t do it, personally, and I Ɛ FRXOGQµW GR WKDW WR P\ NLGV ³

Jason Cassidy We were sitting outside on j ason c @ newsrev iew.c om patio chairs on a recent mild Chico evening, and I had just spent the previous two-plus hours as his latest subject for Chico365, a popular local photography project that’s had Sanchez taking photos of and interviewing someone new every day since Jan. 1, 2016, and posting them to a site that bears the tagline: “I’m a photographer.”

“I [also] don’t consider myself to be a business person because I

work at a retail store, I don’t consider myself to be a musician, ... these are some things that just happen to be things that I do.”

However self-deprecating he might sound, Sanchez is being earnest—when it comes to the photography at least. (I’m inclined to disagree with the notion that someone with a bachelor’s in music who spends nearly every waking moment setting up shows

decided to create another challenge: Take a portrait of someone every day of 2016. He put out the call on Facebook for anyone, “as long as they have an open mind,” to hit him up if they wanted to take part. And the response was instant, with people of all ages, friends and strangers, most with ties to the local arts and music community, lining up to have their photos taken. But what was intended as a photo project almost immediately turned into something bigger.

“The problem was that I asked a question the first day: ‘So, what would you like people to [know] about you?’ And ... I was like, “Oh my god, people have things to say.”

he Nice Guys is an energetically sloppy, comical and entertaining throwback to the crime movies, buddy pictures and action flicks of the 1970s. It works hard at being a guilty pleasure—emphasis by Juan-Carlos on the latter—but Selznick takes care to leave a few morsels of sour taste lingering in the vicinity of its sweeter moments.

ultra-professional, but is much given to elaborate pratfalls, delusional semantic evasions and epic drunkenness. Jack Healy (Crowe) is a beefy, old-school type who mixes strong-arm stuff with crafty gumshoe ministrations.

Unbeknownst to each other, both are hired to find a young woman named Amelia (Margaret Qualley) who has been involved with SoCal porno filmmakers and who has disappeared after the death of a porn star named Misty Mountains. Although their early efforts tend to cancel each other out, they join forces, and eventually solve at least some of the story’s mysteries, even though the solutions are often a matter of what one or the other falls into or what falls, literally, on them.

his whip-smart teenage daughter Holly (Angourie Rice) is a pivotal character in the story’s fleeting glimpses of human virtue. She is a conscience figure for both of the private eyes, as she moderates her father’s self-serving relativism on the one hand and Healy’s brutal fatalism on the other. And at times, she seems the most gifted sleuth in the bunch.

Kim Basinger appears as a government official who also has some peculiar connections to the porno mysteries.

Matt Bomer is on hand as a psychoticlooking hitman wearing a business suit. Lois Smith plays the dead actress’ grandmother, and Beau Knapp plays a lunatic hitman who earns his nickname of “Blueface” in a way you’ve got to see in order to appreciate. □

Writer-director Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin) is making another of his densely atmospheric forays into the violent misadventures of misfits and bottom-feeders. The onscreen results are predictably gory, and yet for all the torturous suspense, Saulnier declines to torture the audience and lets the various oddball characters devise tortures of their own. And with various plot points revolving around such stuff as a fire extinguisher, some microphone feedback, red shoelaces, etc., there’s a streak of fanciful humor running through it all. □

Money Monster

There is indeed much that’s topical in this fast-paced little comedy-drama: investment scams, stock market debacles, the infotainment of TV and cable news, global banking, income inequality, suicide bombers and violent protest, the round-the-clock bombardments of digital media, etc. But director Jodie Foster and company have taken considerable care in making sure that the satire and irony in this scenario remain pretty much at the service of entertainment, and not the other way around. George Clooney plays the lubricious and narcissistic star of a besieged cable news show, and Julia Roberts is the quick-witted director in the control room, scrambling to keep Lee Gates (Clooney), his furious young captor Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell) and the ongoing broadcast itself from spinning further into chaos. Meanwhile, SWAT teams and crisis specialists under the sober command of the lordly Capt.

Powell (Giancarlo Esposito) are plotting the “extraction” of Kyle and his weapons. Overall, Money Monster alludes to a laundry list of political and economic controversies, but ends up backing away from its own potential for a more scathing kind of satire. Cinemark 14. Rated R —J.C.S.

felt a surge of good will toward every restaurant that has occupied the space since. Most of by them have been small ethnic spots that Tuck Coop are allergic to advertising and are helmed by two people, one behind the grill and the other waiting tables. Sipho’s has been Sipho’s in that role for the past five years. The Restaurant & Cafe eatery has a booth at the Thursday Night 1228 Dayton Road Market, which is a nice intro to the food 895-1866 but can’t match the real thing. www.siphos It’s impossible to not love this place. jamaica.com It isn’t faux Jamaican or American Open for lunch Jamaican—it’s a real jerk shack, and dinner levitated from Kingston and dropped Tuesday-Sunday, improbably down in our town. The 11 a.m.-close building is painted in bright yellow, green and red, like a giant Jamaican flag. Inside, reggae music plays unobtrusively. Sit in the covered patio or the garden. You’re surrounded by reed cloth, bamboo and ginger plants.

Ceiling fans turn lazily. You’re cut off from the street here, in a little Caribbean oasis. There’s a performance stage for the reggae bands that come through town— get on Sipho’s mailing list to be alerted when the next one is due. I can’t wait to experience that gig.

The pace is relaxed, as is inevitable when there’s a staff of two. My waitress was Guilena, from Angola.

She couldn’t have been more pleasant. But the star of the show is Newton “Sipho” Merritt, the owner and cook.

He’s a Jamaican Rastaman and the nephew of Jimmy Cliff. He was trained by the legendary Kyso, the master chef who cooked for Bob Marley and everyone else.

Sipho got his name when he went to Africa and met a Zulu woman who had lost her child. He offered himself in his place, and asked her to name him. She dubbed

him Sipho, “the gift.” See, we’re way beyond food here.

About the food: It has its downsides. For one, it’s expensive by ethnic food shack standards. My sampler plate (admittedly, a handsome portion) cost me $26 with dessert, no drinks, and tax. Most entrees run $10-$16 (half-orders available for some). Second, the signature dish is jerk, and it’s hot.

There are two levels of hot in restaurants that serve hot cuisines. Level 1 is when you say, “How hot is the X?,” and the server says, “Not hot.” That food will be very hot. Level 2 is when the server says, “It’s not really hot.” That food will be volcanic, nuclearmeltdown hot. Sipho’s jerk is Level 2.

I knew this about the jerk, so I told Guilena, “I don’t like hot—how hot is the jerk?” (testing her).

She said if I didn’t want it hot she’d have Sipho make it not-hot. I bit. The jerk was perhaps a notch cooler than usual—8 out of 10—but it was too much for me.

Separate from heat, the flavors of Sipho’s meats are wonderful. I had the ox tail (heat level 0) and the curry chicken (5 out of 10) along with the jerk on a sampler plate, and each had a sauce that was distinct, bright and full of snap. So if you like heat, go for the jerk; if you don’t, go for the ox tail, the ital stew (veggie but hearty) or the “brown stewed chicken,” which they were out of but Guilena swore was “not hot” (see disclaimer above).

Beyond the meat dishes, I had issues with everything. The salad is classic plate fill: mostly iceberg and shaved carrots with bottled dressing. The rice was a little cold and old. The plantains, which are included as an appetizer with all entrees, were hard, dry slices of fried banana with salt and a garnish of shredded carrot.

The one interesting drink, Sorrel, is basically Mexican jamaica (hibiscus) with the ginger factor cranked to 11.

But I still love the place. Talk to Sipho and you’ll love it, too. I asked him what the theme of the restaurant was, and he said, “With love.” Ditto. □

IN THE MIX Human Performance Parquet Courts Rough Trade Comparing NYC’s Parquet Courts to Pavement’s slack indie rock and the Velvet Underground’s sixties guitar squall gives newcomers to the band something to pull them in. Five albums and two EPs in, the push-and-pull aesthetic is very much the spine of the band’s appeal (or lack thereof).

Human Performance’s oppositional soul materializes with noisy, impatient bursts (“I Was Just Here”) set against a refined songcraft (“Steady on My Mind”) rarely found in indie rock. It seems the band’s need to be appreciated exists as strongly as its desire for oblivion. Album opener “Dust” and its mantra—“It comes through the window, it comes through the door/Dust is everywhere/Sweep!”—plies the band’s brand of repetitive pop trance to perfect paranoid extremes.

The highlights are gimmick free, and strong because of a smart lyrical turns of phrase or creative arrangements and inspired playing. While not Parquet Courts’ master stroke, Human Performance is a fine introduction.

And, even though I swore off it after last year for being “just too much,” I will most definitely be hitting up the Sharkey’s Fish Fry trailer for some Cap’n Crunch shrimp on a stick. I can’t help myself.

And the bonus entertainment at this year’s edition of the fair is on point, with X-treme motocross Friday at 7 p.m.; the World Pancake Eating Championship (with Major League Eating’s No. 1-ranked eater, Matt Stonie, competing!) on Saturday at 1 p.m.; and on the final night, Monday, at 5 p.m., it’s a demolition derby!
