Another reason to ban fracking A recent study published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental

Science & Technology suggests for the first time that hydraulic fracturing— that controversial oil-extraction method known as fracking—can, indeed, contaminate groundwater. In fact, the study reveals, it already has.

Stanford University scientists studied a groundwater basin near the tiny town of Pavillion, Wyo., which is close to fracking operations. The community originally began complaining about a foul taste to the drinking water there in 2008, but despite research by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency concluding that fracking might cause aquifer contamination, nothing was done. The Stanford scientists didn’t let it rest, though, and determined that the dumping of fracking chemicals underground without an adequate concrete barrier allowed those chemicals to seep into Pavillion’s drinking water.

“This is a wake-up call,” said lead author Dominic DiGiulio, in a Stanford press release. “It’s perfectly legal to inject stimulation fluids into underground drinking water resources. This may be causing widespread impacts on drinking water resources.”

DiGiulio is right: It should be a wake-up call for all of us. Many in our local community, including the organization Frack-Free Butte County and this newspaper, have long warned about the threats fracking poses to the environment. The community of Pavillion, Wyo., is learning that first-hand and the full scope of repercussions is yet to be known.

The Stanford study notes that shallow fracking operations are regulated only in two states—Colorado and Texas—and that Pavillion is by no means a solitary case. This June, let’s vote to ban fracking in Butte County—let’s not let our community become another test case. □

n the March issue of The Atlantic, distinguished national correspondent James Fallows reports on a three-year national reporting tour that took him all over the United States and helped him with the premise, “How America is putting itself back together.”

Although a common opinion is that the country is going to hell, Fallows surprisingly found much reason for hope. In many mediumsize cities, he found ample reinvention and renewal. As he was reaching his conclusions, he identified 11 signs that a city will by succeed: Donald Heinz 1. Divisive national politics The author is a seem a distant concern. Accompanying the article is a map showing Fallows’ reporting journey. There are only dots, no names. One of the dots is in Northern California, midway between the ocean and the state’s eastern border. Could this be Chico? □

conservation efforts throughout California’s 400-plus urban water agencies. This emergency measure calling for a 25 percent reduction statewide compared with usage in 2013 came during the fourth consecutive year of drought.

This week, the state announced that water users had slacked off, missing that target for the past five months and ending the nine-month cumulative savings at 23.9 percent—1 percent short of the target. Granted, that’s a lot of water savings. It’s an estimated 1.19 million acre-feet, enough water to supply about 6 million residents for a year, according to the State Water Resources Control Board.

Here in Chico, where we’re reliant solely on groundwater, we’ve seen the evidence of conservation efforts in the brown lawns that lined many streets last summer. Cumulatively, according to Chico’s Cal Water Co. District Manager Pete Bonacich, Chicoans embraced the measure, conserving 37.6 percent. The target was 32 percent.

But before we start patting ourselves on the back, it’s important to take in the long view. Despite this El Niño year, the state, particularly Southern California, remains parched. The North State’s reservoirs may be nearly full, but thirsty Central Valley farmers and many municipal users in communities from the Bay Area on down are counting on those supplies.

They are facing severe water shortages.

As a result, Brown has extended the mandatory restrictions through October. That message hasn’t resonated with some water suppliers. One district that supplies a suburb of Sacramento has eschewed Brown’s order and is holding its customers only to a 10 percent voluntary reduction.

That’s a mistake and one we shouldn’t emulate.

The caveat to the governor’s extension is that districts have some leeway with the reduction requirements. Locally, we will see some relief.

Cal Water announced that Chico’s target will now be 29 percent while Oroville is going from 28 percent to 25 percent, as of April 1.

The takeaway is that the drought isn’t over. We need to remain vigilant. □

Police killing revisited

dogwood days About five years ago, my husband and I purchased our first house, a 1950s rancher that had good bones but needed a lot of cosmetic work, along with some big-ticket items. It was difficult to decide what to tackle first, other than some simple painting inside. I guess that’s how it is when you buy a fixer-upper.

We could’ve chosen any number of projects, but we were always drawn outside—into our backyard, which is fairly large by modern standards. From day one, we began transforming it into a little sanctuary. We’ve planted perennials and fruit, shade and ornamental trees, at least 13 by my count. We also have a nice little garden as well as a play area for our toddler. The space we’ve created is by far the best thing about the house.

Meanwhile, the front yard remains a work in progress. We hated to do it, but last year we removed a really old but very diseased mulberry tree. And, like many other Chicoans, we let our lawn die. Right now, aside from a few flower beds and a maple tree we planted, the front yard is a blank canvas.

But that’s about to change. We’re getting ready to redo that space, too.

The question for us over the past year six months or so has been whether to replace the lawn. We’ve gone back and forth on it several times. At one point, we toyed with the idea of having just the tiniest patch of grass. This is the time of year when everything in Chico is so lush and green, especially with the recent abundant rainfall. It’s been tempting to go for the turf.

However, pragmatism won the day. We’ve decided against a landscape with lawn, opting instead for drought-tolerant plants surrounded by bark. We are going to keep that young maple where it is. We’ll probably plant another one, too. And then there’s another tree we’re set on: a dogwood.

Not to sound hokey, but if you haven’t noticed those gorgeous trees blooming around town right now, think about having your eyes checked. Dogwoods typically have white or pink flowers, or a combination thereof. I favor the white ones, which give the illusion of a snow-covered tree this time of year.

But back to our turf. If I had any lingering doubts about going lawnless, they were put to rest this week by news about our parched state. Water experts sounded off about how the longterm drought has created a long-term depletion of groundwater.

Recent rains haven’t replenished those losses. On top of that, the state just announced that urban areas didn’t hit Gov. Jerry Brown’s water-conservation target (see “It ain’t over,” page 4).

I’m no martyr, mind you. I’m going to plant a lot of those drought-tolerant plants. I’m also keeping the patch of lawn in my backyard. Give me a few years and stricter conservation mandates and that may go, too.

Re “Butte death rate high” (Newslines, by Meredith J. Cooper and Raheem F. Hosseini, March 31): The story didn’t mention the fact that Victor Coleman was sitting on the floor with a phone in his lap when he was attacked by Oroville Police Officers Tennegkeit, Nickelson and Cooley. It didn’t mention that a third of the 16 bullets that struck him entered his body from the rear as he lay face down.

District Attorney Mike Ramsey said Victor was standing and attacking. When asked why the only evidence of damage from gunfire was in the floor and only up the wall 13 inches from the floor, Ramsey said: “It’s there all right.” However, he refused to show it to us.

Ramsey has been asked twice in writing under the California Public Records Act to provide us with the crime scene documentation. There has been no response. Attorney General Kamala Harris’ version of open justice was to also refuse.

The citizens of Butte County can reduce the police-involved death rate.

First, you must appoint quality people and provide proper training for police positions. Nepotism shouldn’t be a basis for giving someone a badge and gun. And you must have a district attorney who has integrity.

Six-figure tunnel vision Re “Money talks” (Downstroke, March 31): The California State University administration maintains that our budget cannot afford more than a 3 percent bump in faculty salaries. I know where that additional 2 percent can be obtained, at least some of it: Administrators could rollback the most recent 2 percent raises given them.

is expected of the rank and file.

Why this option did not previously occur to the administrators is evidence of their cocooning themselves in privilege and an impenetrable lack of empathy.

It is not as though the 2 percent rollback would cause the administrators hardship. Two percent rollbacks amount to $2,000 to $8,000 reductions in salary, which can easily be absorbed when they are being paid six figures, many of them in the middle six figures.

I urge the public to contact assembly representatives, the CSU board of trustees, Gov. Brown, the university presidents and anyone else who might support this proposal. Maybe a strike can be averted after all.

An invitation Re “‘Home of the homeless’” (Letters, by Michael Bagwell, March 31): Michael Bagwell asks: Am I “advocating” for “homelessness as some kind of alternative lifestyle?” The term “alternative lifestyle” suggests a creative foray into living on the edge. Would I advocate for a person’s right to live this way? Yes. An American by the name of Henry David Thoreau made the value of this well understood. (Along with Buddha, Jesus, Walt Whitman, etc.)

OK, we have 1 percent of the homeless covered; let’s get to the rest. The other 99 percent are America’s poorest people. Almost all are disabled, compromising their competitiveness in the marketplace. They have brain injuries (about 50 percent of men), PTSD, addictions and other mental and physical health problems. Most come from families hammered by dysfunction.

Am I saying that grinding, painful poverty ought to be a “lifestyle?” No, I’m saying the poor should not be seen as the “problem” and that their living conditions will continue to be a problem, in nearly direct proportion to our societal incompetence.

Above all, street people ought to be seen as human beings—just like you and me.

If affirming people on the streets, with kindness and material support, creates an obstacle

to addressing systemic injustice, I invite Bagwell to make that case.

Outraged parent speaks up Re “Pay day” (Newslines, by Meredith J. Cooper, March 24): As an attorney and parent of a Pleasant Valley High School graduate, I was outraged that Chico Unified School District officials squandered [hundreds of thousands of dollars] attempting to withhold unquestionable public records to conceal their nefarious actions. The administration owed the community a fiduciary duty to keep their conduct above the law rather than circumventing it.

With the heightened awareness of these abuses nationally, how can CUSD officials claim they didn’t know the law? Judge Roberts’ ruling emphasized the district’s outrageous conduct by imposing a substantial 20 percent penalty atop the statutory fees she awarded the prevailing party. One wonders whether district leaders bothered to disclose at meetings the fees they were incurring out of the public coffers to perpetuate this obfuscation of transparency, as well as their liability when they conceivably lost?

I commend Judge Roberts’ brave analysis and judgment. If CUSD officials used “private email” in a misguided attempt to avoid owning up to them as public records, or if any reveal more despicable actions, I would certainly expect to swiftly see more heads roll, resignations submitted, as well as a change in their legal counsel.

‘Heartfelt and inspiring’ Re “To protect and serve” (Guest comment, by Bill Mash, March 24): Bill Mash’s guest comment was excellent. It was a heartfelt and inspiring window into the small everyday vignettes that often take place unnoticed and unheralded.

And it was sweet to be reminded of our human capacity for kindness and compassion. Thanks to those who were part of the scene and to Mr. Mash for his thoughtful reflection.

‘No more excuses’ It is time to stop recycling wornout excuses. It is past time for Chico Scrap Metal to move.

Following the Feb. 18 Planning Commission meeting, CSM spokewoman Kim Scott was quoted as saying, “You can’t vote to tell us to do something, and then vote a different way after we comply with those directions.” I concur, although CSM has yet to comply.

It has not moved. It has not done what it was unequivocally told to do.

On July 5, 2011, the City

Council directed the commission to set a “drop dead” move date for CSM. On Oct. 4, 2011, the council followed up, and on a motion seconded by then-Councilman Mark Sorensen, it approved a final three-year extension to Dec. 31, 2014, “with no additional extensions allowed.”

Unfortunately, neither CSM, nor current Mayor Sorensen, has kept their word and followed through. The Planning Commission has held steadfast though, and has denied approval of last-ditch machinations and excuses to let CSM stay. It is time to do the chores. No more excuses. No more extensions. It is time for council to follow through and require CSM to move.

A close encounter As I approached the crossroad on my bicycle on a recent morning, a small car appeared to be coming to a stop. They had a stop sign; I did not. As I crossed in front of the car, the driver did a “California stop,” and began accelerating. I was almost creamed. I could see the young lady mouth, “Whoa!” as she slammed the brakes.

She held a cellphone in one of her hands. I’m pretty sure she had been texting. I have been lucky so far, in that I have only had close calls. But at least once a year I encounter a situation similar to this and the driver is either talking on a cellphone or texting.

It is saddening that so many people take cellphone use while driving lightly. It is knowingly and willingly engaging in an activity that impairs the ability to concentrate on the business at hand, which is operating a motor vehicle.

NEWSLINES DOWNSTROKE HIT ON HOMELESS IS FINAL

The Chico City Council gave final approval Tuesday (April 5) to an ordinance that allows police to confiscate personal property left untended in a public space, and also outlaws public defecation and urination, but not before hearing from two people who questioned its morality and legality.

Benson, a homelessness activist, said it was wrong to confiscate the belongings of people who have nowhere to store things.

Their packs may contain important papers or medicines they need to stay alive.

Lindsay Wood, the watershed coordinator for the Butte Environmental Council, said she sees (and smells) poop while working on creek cleanups. But it’s wrong to make defecation illegal when the city provides no place at night for homeless people to relieve themselves.

The ordinance passed 4-3, with Councilmembers Ann Schwab, Tami Ritter and Randall Stone dissenting.

MORE SCRAP

The Chico Planning Commission will again vote on its recommendation to City Council regarding whether Chico Scrap Metal should be allowed to stay at its East 20th Street location.

In February, city staff recommended the commission green light the recycler’s efforts to stay, which included plans to spruce up the business’ exterior. The commission instead voted 3-2 to recommend it move as ordered by past city councils. The scrap yard is out of compliance with zoning adopted by Butte County in 2000 and Chico in 2004.

The February vote sent staff back to write a negative recommendation, which the commission will vote on tonight (Thursday, April 7) . The City Council will make the ultimate decision whether CSM stays or goes at an upcoming regular meeting.

Abbott served a few months of his sentence behind bars before moving to house arrest, at which point a case worker from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office asked if he wanted to learn construction skills.

He agreed and last October enrolled in

YouthBuild Chico, a grant-funded program dedicated to providing seriously at-risk youths the chance to get a high school diploma and valuable vocational training with an emphasis on construction.

YouthBuild is an international organization that operates in 46 states and 27 countries. To qualify for the program, students must be between 16 and 24 years old and have been convicted of a crime or left high school without a diploma. Many students hail from low-income households and have experienced homelessness, addiction and the foster care system. Homeless students, those who’ve suffered addiction and those referred by the BCSO are placed in transitional or sober-living facilities while attending YouthBuild. The program is funded by grants.

The Chico chapter was founded in 2013 and is offered at the Grass Valley-based John Muir Charter School, whose Chico campus is located in a converted warehouse on Park Avenue. Students attend school there from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. five days a week. In addition to studies, on-site counseling, résumé writing and conducting mock interviews, students develop handson construction skills and must complete at least 10 hours of community service

weekly. Graduates walk away with a diploma, as well as certifications in forklift operation, CPR/first aid and other skills sought by employers. The school will begin offering welding and other programs in the near future.

“The day I got here, a staff member said,

‘The two things we’re going to give you are hope and an opportunity, and what you do with that is up to you,’” Abbott said while discussing the school’s emphases on discipline, self-reliance and respect for oneself and others. Those values are conveyed with a healthy dose of patriotism and a touch of quasi-military tradition.

On a recent weekday morning, students worked independently on various projects—cooking breakfast, tinkering with birdhouses and wooden furniture in the school’s parking lot—while the staff held a twice-weekly meeting to discuss daily business and the progress and needs of each individual student. The meeting was presided over by former Fair View High School Principal Bernard Vigallon, who co-founded YouthBuild Chico with Jack Rodgers, the program’s construction coordinator.

Vigallon, or “Vig” as he’s known to students and staff, introduces himself as

“the school nurse,” though his leadership role is clear. His personality is equal parts firm and funny; he’s a wisecracking straight-shooter with a fondness for nicknames (one student using a walking stick for a recent foot injury is known as Gandalf; another is named Lurch based on his resemblance to the Addams Family butler).

At 9:15 a.m., everyone gathered in the warehouse’s main room. About half of the roughly two dozen students attending that day were dressed in dark blue YouthBuild shirts, while the others, known as “probies,” wore plain blue jeans and white T-shirts. All new students spend their two week probationary period accomplishing a series of tasks known as the “mental toughness challenge” to determine if they’re a good fit for the program. The tasks include remembering the names of all students and staff; written testing; and building a chair, a table and a birdhouse from broken-down wood palettes.

At the morning gathering, some of the senior students, known as “boots,” presided over the “post” ceremony.

Each presented an item painted red, white and blue and decorated with stars and stripes—a shovel, a lunch pail, a pair of work boots—while reciting a phrase about the item’s symbolism.

Vigillon’s sense of humor even infiltrated this solemn tradition. The student posting a lunch pail to symbolize family recited, “You should carry a photo of your family in your lunch pail to remind you what you’re working for, and if you don’t have a family, then Vig will be your grandmother.”

After post, students engaged in physical training, which that day consisted of running the length of the school’s parking lot several times. Afterward, the students divided up to do different tasks. Some returned to their carpentry projects while others donned ties to participate in mock interviews.

Rodgers explained that every aspect of the work done by students is to teach them applicable values and life skills: “We try to make it as real as possible,” he said. “This is a job, and we have the same expectations that employers do—show up, be cool and take care of business.”

Abbott is already applying the skills he’s learning to the real world.

He spends his weekends working with Rodgers installing granite countertops, and hopes to get hired to work with him full-time after graduation. He credits the program, and the staff, with turning his life around.

“There’s a lot of knowledge here, a lot of support and a lot of love,” he said. □

months into her tenure as executive director of the Jesus Center, she’s constantly looking to her colleagues at other organizations to see what aid is being offered that could complement the center’s services, which include serving meals, providing housing for women and children, and job skills programs.

For Cootsona, collaboration is key to addressing homelessness. That’s why she’s attending a special Homeless Symposium next Friday, April 15, that aims to bring together various Butte County agencies such as Behavioral Health, and nonprofits including the Torres Community Shelter, to educate people on what they’re doing to help homeless people. While she is not presenting at the symposium, Cootsona said she wouldn’t miss the chance to attend because it’s the first gathering of its kind.

The idea is to get everyone on the same page and compile a comprehensive list of what’s being done throughout the county.

Each municipality, as well as unincorporated regions of Butte County, struggles with issues related to homelessness. In 2015, according to a census conducted by the Butte Countywide Homeless Continuum of Care, 1,127 homeless people were living in Butte County. Almost 75 percent were male and 571 of those who answered the survey were in Chico.

The symposium is hosted by Butte

County and the municipalities therein: Biggs, Chico, Gridley, Oroville and Paradise. The fact that they all came together and representatives from each will be in attendance shows that homelessness is a countywide problem and should be addressed at that level, said Paul Hahn, chief administrative officer for Butte County.

“For example, if Chico toughens up on some of its homeless programs and people just move to Oroville, we haven’t solved the problem,” he said. “There’s a recognition that that’s not a very good approach. If we’re going to deal with it, let’s deal with it on a broader perspective.”

Hahn sees a meeting like this as an important first step in moving forward and identifying gaps. Getting groups together to identify what everyone is doing helps shape new, well-informed ideas about what needs to be done next or better.

Because the Jesus Center relies on private

contributions, Cootsona has more freedom when it comes to spending. That’s not the case for many other programs that receive government funding and must offer certain programs. Learning what those organizations are doing allows Cootsona to strategize the center’s services and budget.

“So at the Jesus Center, we can offer services they may not be providing because we have money that has no strings attached,” she said. “So, rather than do what they’re doing, I can do things that they can’t do.”

The public is invited to attend the forum.

“It’s really strategic for us to be there together to learn from each other,” Cootsona said. “Our strength in this area is us working together.”

word “complex” was heard times Tuesday (April 5) as Ttheheseveral Chico City Council discussed a plan to improve safety and efficiency on The Esplanade. (For a detailed portrait of the plan, see “Changes to the boulevard,” cover story, March 31.)

As quickly became clear, there are many constituencies—historicpreservation groups, bicyclists, people with disabilities, school administrators and everyday motorists—who are concerned about the future of the iconic boulevard. They were out in force Tuesday night.

It was just as clear that the plan is so complex that it would have been impossible for council members to determine its final shape at Tuesday’s meeting, even after discussing it for two hours and hearing from about two dozen citizens.

A special meeting devoted just to the plan will be held later this month, date to be determined. At that time, the council will go over its numerous recommendations one by one and decide which to include in a final draft and which to abandon in favor of other options.

The goal is to agree on a final

plan in time to submit it for funding in June.

Presenting the latest iteration of the study were Brendan Ottoboni, the city’s public works director-engineering, and Steve Weinberger, of the Santa Rosabased traffic-engineering consulting firm W-Trans.

The bedrock issue, Ottoboni said, is that The Esplanade is out of compliance with federal and state bicycle and pedestrian safety regulations.

A combination of driver confusion, the lack of bicycle facilities (bike lanes, markings and signage), unclear connections and other factors has led to high bicycle accident rates, he said. And the lack of countdown pedestrian signals, island refuges and ADAappropriate curb ramps has made it unsafe for pedestrians and the disabled, who simply can’t cross the street in the time allotted.

Acknowledging that the plan presented “a complex set of recommendations for a complex corridor,” Weinberger outlined what he and city staff believed was the best way to solve the corridor’s many problems.

To make the plan work, however,

would require switching from the current timed signals, which enable motorists going 28 mph to hit green lights all the way, to an ondemand detection system that could incorporate new left-turn signals and pedestrian push buttons.

Councilman Andrew Coolidge asked what would happen if the timed speed were lowered to, say, 26 or 25 mph. And Mayor Mark Sorensen said, “It’s hard not to envision complete gridlock at peak hours.”

Weinberger insisted that the issue of vehicle delay had been evaluated, and it had been determined that driving the length of The Esplanade would take only 20-30 seconds longer under the proposed system.

To make The Esplanade safer for pedestrians, he said, the plan would add countdown signal heads and push-button activation at all signalized intersections, create refuge islands at all intersections and consistently mark all pedestrian crosswalks. New curb ramps at crosswalks, sidewalk repairs and improved trail connection to the 11th Avenue trail bridge over

The plan recommends a new two-way bike path along the old railroad right of way, among other improvements. It also calls for turning Oleander Avenue into a bike route and removing most north-south stop signs. A traffic signal would go in at First Avenue and Oleander, and traffic congestion at Memorial Way and Oleander would be relieved by a roundabout.

Two other roundabouts are proposed for The Esplanade—one at Memorial Way, the other at First Avenue. Neither is likely to be approved. A left-turn lane on the south-bound Esplanade will suffice for the former, and the latter is controversial and expensive. The only alternative to it, however, is to update signal timing, an approach that is unlikely to solve that intersection’s serious problems.

As it turned out, the element of the plan that is designed to solve congestion problems around Chico High School turned out to be the most controversial, in particular the idea of turning Lincoln Avenue into a two-way street, with a turnaround at Magnolia.

Residents of the Mansion Park neighborhood complained that they hadn’t been notified of the design, and that it wouldn’t work.

“It will change our quality of life,” said Caithlin Wood. But everyone acknowledged that congestion at drop-off and pick-up times was creating unsafe conditions.

Otherwise, though, most of the plan’s recommendations received strong support, notably those meeting ADA standards, improving pedestrian safety and giving bicyclists a separate bike path. Charles Withuhn urged council members not to remove any trees along the corridor, while Dianne Wilkinson, a former director of the Chico Museum, asked that they respect the boulevard’s historical value.

“Roundabouts are not historic,” she stated bluntly.

Still, a number of people favored the roundabouts, saying they would improve traffic flow, save gas and reduce pollution.

“Roundabouts level the playing field for everyone,” as bicyclist Karen Goodwin put it.

ation when she had her second child. A native of Peru training in Iowa, Valdez raised her infant daughter and son with the help of her husband, and from an early age made reading an important part of childrearing.

“That was part our routine, like brushing their teeth or giving them baths—reading them a book,” she said. “It was important.

Nobody told us that was a good thing. At that time, it didn’t come from a pediatri-

cian. I think if I would’ve gotten that advice to read more, I would have done that even more.”

Her children now grown, Valdez gives that guidance to other parents. She is a pioneering pediatrician in Butte County for the Reach Out and Read program, providing books for children ages six months through five years at their well-child checkups.

The Northern Valley Indian Health Children’s Health Center, where Valdez practices, is the only pediatric office in Chico participating in Reach Out and Read; Dr. Maria Alino in Oroville is the county’s other pediatrician affiliated with the program. The First 5 Butte County Children and Families Commission, which supports Reach Out and Read locally, has fielded inquiries from eight additional pediatricians.

“Right now there are 20,000 ROR doctors in the United States and they’re giving out 6.5 million books to 4 million children

[annually], so it’s not like we’re a new program,” said Sandra Machida, a Chico State psychology professor and First 5 Commissioner. “What we’re trying to do is develop it.”

What distinguishes Reach Out and Read from other literacy programs is scientific research. Fifteen independent published studies backed up the national organization’s findings that children served by Reach Out and Read enter kindergarten three to six months ahead of their peers in vocabulary skills.

That statistic jumped out at Valdez when she learned about the program at a conference 10 years ago.

“That’s a big advantage,” she said.

“Programs like Head Start do a great job, but really there’s no better teacher than the parents. That’s the message we send: ‘You’re your children’s first preschool teacher.’”

ers trained and the program launched in November. Through March 31, they’d distributed 975 books. Grant money covers the purchases; Valdez, with input from colleagues, chooses titles from a Scholastic publishing catalog.

Of course, she has personal favorites from when she reads to her children (such as Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?). Valdez also makes sure to stock bilingual and Spanish books, and order volumes that prove particularly popular with patients and parents.

Staff members also bring in books for older children, not covered by the program, so siblings don’t feel left out. Thus, the clinic has a tall bookshelf in the back office that’s become a de facto library of kid lit.

room, instead of just the classroom? The answer stems from the pediatrician-parent relationship.

“In the lives of these parents, the pediatrician is the be-all, end-all,” said Yvonne Nenadal, executive director of First 5 Butte County. “To have a pediatrician talk about books and reading is incredibly validating and important.”

Beyond acting as mentor, a pediatrician serves as an observer.

“One of the focuses of [monitoring] development is on surveillance,” Machida explained, “and so the doctor can watch the parentchild interaction, how they’re mouthing the book, and if there’s some delay the doctor can see that more naturally through observation.”

Most of all, education represents an integral part of medicine.

conversation like a piece clicking into a puzzle.

“Basically, through this program, we’re giving parents tools to improve the development of their children,” she said. “So, I think looking at it that way, it’s part of the medical [process].”

The book itself serves as a diagnostic tool: Valdez can glean developmental cues just from how a baby or toddler interacts with the volume. Teething, manipulating, focusing, vocalizing—each offers insight into a specific stage.

The main goal, however, is fostering a parent-child relationship through reading. Valdez says she has been gratified to see so many families positively affected and hopes other pediatricians in the

area will incorporate Reach Out and Reach into their practices.

She’s found that encouraging literacy isn’t an additional task to shoehorn into an already-crammed office visit. Rather, it fits organically—holistically—and adds joyful satisfaction to the nine wellchild checks.

“It has not been a burden at all,” she said. “Actually, it’s something that makes all of us [at the clinic] very happy to do.”

Personal experiences also stoke her enthusiasm.

“As a mother, that connection I had with my kids, even tired coming back from work, reading to them was a special moment,” Valdez shared. “We repeated the same books over and over. My kids still remember; I still remember. I think that connection is very valuable.

“I tell these stories to my [patients’] parents. ‘You’re so lucky to be able to do this now; take advantage of it. It’s very precious.’” □

WEEKLY DOSE Nuts and guts Look at the nutrition facts on a package of nuts, especially the calorie and fat content, and you might think, “Eating nuts=weight gain.” But the opposite is true, according to Berkeley Wellness, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and a team of national writers. When added to a regular diet—even without cutting back on other sources of calories—nuts don’t cause weight gain, and when added to a calorie-controlled diet, they may actually help with weight loss. What’s the deal? Well, the fiber and protein in nuts helps you feel full longer, and some research suggests that nuts cause a slight increase in the rate at which your body burns calories. Also, nuts are rich in heart-friendly unsaturated fats, and you might not absorb all of the fat in whole nuts, anyway— some research finds that as much as 17 percent of it passes through the body undigested.

“I’m approached almost every semester by students who are doing sustainability studies, and they give suggestions to us,” said Pedretti, manager for 16 of the restaurant’s 28 years.

Certain tips tend to recur: energy-efficient light bulbs, for instance, and timers. Once in a while, fresh ideas surface.

“We use some of them,” he said. “We’re happy to be a part of that.”

Some things, however, are beyond their control. A new state mandate on composting means the restaurant will now have another waste bin out back.

Under the terms of Assembly Bill 1826, starting April 1, any business that generates at least 8 cubic yards per week of organic waste must separate that waste stream for collection and processing that diverts it from landfills. Such items include food scraps, coffee filters, tea bags, food-soiled paper and biodegradable packaging, yard trimmings and tree wood.

The law also applies to any multifamily residential building of at least five units with 8 cubic yards per week of organic waste, though the collection requirement just extends to yard trimmings.

That threshold, which increases in future years (see box), is sizable. According to Sal Coniglio, general manager of Recology Butte Colusa Counties, it takes a large kitchen—such as a school or hospital’s—to yield this much compost-qualifying trash. (For reference, 8 cubic yards of material would fill three full-size truck beds.)

“Not too many restaurants are doing

8 cubic yards of food waste [a week],” he said by phone. “They may be doing 8 cubic yards of garbage with other nonrecycleable items, which is pretty typical … but restaurants, when they waste food, it costs them money; the food that they’re disposing of is what’s left on the plate. They’re pretty efficient in their kitchens.”

Tres Hombres is efficient, too, Pedretti said, but along with doing a brisk business— i.e., many plates to scrape—has unavoidable food items to discard. For example, Mexican food requires a lot of lettuce, but each head of lettuce the kitchen staff chops up leaves a hard end that gets placed in a waste bin, not a taco or tostada.

Recology provided new bins to Tres Hombres, and the handful of other local commercial customers who now need to collect organic waste, free of charge. Pickup service is scheduled three times weekly.

Coniglio said Recology is developing a fee structure, but it’s possible the additional service could be offset by reduction in the cost of hauling landfill garbage.

Waste Management, the other company serving Chico, also will charge for the service. customers to right-size their trash, recycling and food-waste containers to help ensure they can be compliant with the new law in a cost-effective way.”

Mandatory commercial organics recycling

under AB 1826 fits hand-in-glove with AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act, by contributing to state goals for recycling and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

As Waste Management explains in a fact sheet, these compostable materials account for 10 million tons—almost a third—of waste that goes into California landfills annually. Diverting that waste will reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted from landfills; processing this waste into compost and mulch products will help enrich soil and plants, conserve water and sequester carbon.

Waste Management will add an additional route with a different truck to handle organics, though Polito said the company “do[es] not foresee the need to open a new facility” for processing.

Recology already has a route established, as well as a facility in place.

“In ’09, we were watching this happening in the Bay Area and other communities, some pilot programs, so we started a food waste program here way in advance,” Coniglio said. “A lot of the cities and counties are having a tough time developing that infrastructure.

“It’s a great program,” he added. “It could be a hardship for some businesses, maybe, but a lot of these businesses are used to recycling now with all their activities.”

Grocers and vendors large enough to be impacted likely have established food-waste processes, Coniglio noted, such as directly transporting old meat to a rendering plant.

At Tres Hombres, Pedretti said the change will be as simple as getting staff accustomed to using one more garbage can.

His main concern is insects buzzing around the bin, because the organic waste cannot be wrapped in plastic, and storing garbage inside is not a healthy alternative.

“There’s already a fly issue with dumpsters; having just food products sitting in receptacles, I can see that being a problem,” he said. “But, big picture, this is a good thing.” □

Hipness factor growing downtown

Food doesn’t get more handmade than the bread offered by Hearth and Stone Bakery. On a dirt road off of another dirt road in the wilds of Cohasset, Larry Jansen and his wife, Chris Greer-Jansen, make more than a dozen styles of bread in a fully outfitted bakery attached to their home, both of which they built from the ground up. They even designed and built the mill they use to grind organic whole grains into flour, as well as the wood-fired stone oven the bread is cooked in. They run a side business selling those items to bakeries and other buyers around the country. The Jansens bake about 300 loaves—as well as English muffins, pitas and the occasional pizza round—weekly, with the fresh bread delivered to Chico Natural Foods and S&S Organic Produce and Natural Foods every Friday, and the Chico Certified Farmers’ Market on Saturdays.

How did you get into baking?

Larry: I started baking bread when I was about 15. My mom was the bread baker in the family, and I took the job over from her. When I was 19, they said, “Well what do

you want to do with yourself,” and I said, “Bake bread,” so it progressed from there. We owned a bakery back East [in Wilkesboro, N.C.], but it kind of limped along.

It’s biscuits and cornbread country there … we didn’t really sell well in an old factory town.

How did you end up in Cohasset?

Larry: Chico had been our destination since 1992. We’d close down the bakery and take these big cross-country trips every other year, and we loved it here. We came out in 1998 so I could do that book [illustrate The Wildflowers of Table Mountain, A Naturalist’s Guide], and so Chris could teach art at Chico State, and then we started the bakery 12 years ago this summer. I think we chose Cohasset because of the pines, because it’s a bit greener than Chico. Chico is beautiful, but for

What differentiates Hearth and Stone bread from that of other bakeries?

Chris: It’s made the way bread was made a long time ago. It’s naturally leavened using starters and long fermentation, with no commercial yeast, and contains only three ingredients—natural grains ground into flour, Celtic sea salt and well water. We couldn’t use city water to do this; the chlorination would kill the starter. It’s great for people who have issues with bread. The whole gluten-intolerance thing …

I know some people actually have Celiac [disease], but a lot of that is just being used to sell people things. A lot of people wouldn’t have problems if they just ate whole foods.

Downtown Chico is getting quite a makeover lately. With Burgers & Brew having moved out of the old Bank of America building at Second and Broadway and down the street, much buzz has been stirring about the future of that prime corner space. Construction has been going strong; currently crews are busy widening the sidewalk along Second Street, creating space for what one might presume (and rightly so) will be a large outdoor patio.

I’ve been a fan of Mohammed Shabbar’s cooking ever since he opened Mediterranean eatery Petra (where the awesomely delicious Ali Baba now resides on Broadway). I ran into him several months ago, when he first told me about his new venture, Tellers, with partner David Halimi (who owns Diamond W, the old Bank of America building and other properties). So, I gave Shabbar a ring and we arranged to meet up to discuss their plans for Tellers, so named because of the building’s banking roots.

As we walked through the vast space, they took turns highlighting different features. Halimi is particularly excited about the brightly colored walls and the many bar areas for singles to mingle. He also touted the 32 beer taps and offering wine on tap, too (one of the hottest new restaurant trends, which ensures each glass is perfectly fresh). Shabbar, who will serve as head chef, waxed on about the freshness of the menu, which will feature gourmet salads, sandwiches and burgers. They’ve already partnered with some local providers, including Divide Ranch, and Halimi pointed to an inside wall that will showcase the restaurant’s own herb garden.

And the patios, well, they should be quite a draw. The current entrance at the corner will be a covered patio space, which will open into open-air seating, complete with a fire pit. For those looking for more intimate outdoor dining, there also will be patio space out back. All in all, it sounds like Tellers is going to be the hippest new downtown hotspot—in about three months, Halimi estimated. I’ll definitely be among the first to check it out.

Once again, we let the experts—the 1078 Gallery Literary Committee—read through the hundreds of entries and select the winners and honorable mentions.

Here’s what they had to say about their process and this year’s crop of poems: “As always, there were many wonderful Poetry 99 submissions to choose from. When narrowing down the top three in each age category, we looked for a cohesive theme, the poet’s use of metaphor and simile, strong imagery, attention to fluidity and rhythm, concision in the language and overall composition.

We selected a variety of poems that best reflect these poetic devices in each age group. We delighted in the playfulness, were moved by the gravity of some, and hope that those submitting will continue to write, find a community of other writers to share their work with and read widely in the vast world of classic and contemporary poetry.”

I’ve read that you rarely play “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” so what’s it like playing it every night now?

A few decades ago, I removed it from the setlist except for the occasional 10-year anniversaries. The length of the piece and the fact that the times had changed made it too hard to keep doing it every night. That said, the 50th anni-

I’m pretty sure the military would’ve found something for me to do, and I’ve always had a great respect for the guys who had to do the work. It was the policies I was against, not the soldiers. And I’m sure I would’ve found a way to show my displeasure with those polices.

In fact, many soldiers did just that. I had no plan B. I went to the draft board expecting to be shipped out that day.

I must say it was a great relief that it turned out the way it did.

Well, naturally, I love Bernie Sanders and I hope things go very well for him during this election. I saw the photos from the Woody Guthrie Center, and I was saddened only because I missed him by a day (we were there the day before). But, whether or not he wins, the die is cast. People are rightly fed up … they just disagree on what to do about it. I won’t speak for my dad—his work speaks for itself—but if I get the chance, I will definitely vote for Bernie.

Anyone who was (or is) a parent knows what it’s like to drag the kids kicking and screaming somewhere, even though you know they’ll be happy when they get there. Sometimes the whole nation feels like that kind of family. Bernie, even on his grouchiest day, appears to be the most qualified and trustworthy parent in the bunch. The guy has been in Congress longer than anyone else running, so he’s kind of like an inside outsider. ... Not one to take rejection lying down, Ruck is rallying the local music community to join him in a second attempt at the record, shifting the location to The DownLo, in the heart of downtown Chico. This time, Ruck and company are merely trying to break the record of 15 1/2 days (not double it, like last year), and the plan is to keep playing until 7 p.m. on April 17.

Curious about the scene at the new venue, I descended into the basement bar and grill for opening night. As it did in 2015, this year’s record attempt kicked off on April Fool’s Day, and as they did last year, Erin Haley and her band Firefly performed the first set. Haley has a sweet voice well-suited to the mostly mid-tempo folksy/bluesy songs in her repertoire, and her band, which includes Chris Briggs on bass, guitarist Mike Russell and percussionist Camille de Ganon, provides her with solid backing for her acoustic guitar strumming and singing. As a party-

starter, the band struck me as a bit mellow, but Russell is a tasteful guitarist, weaving fiery lead enhancements around Haley’s vocals, and Briggs’ Fender bass conveyed a fat-bottomed tone and funky rhythmic power that had hips swaying to a great cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason.”

Next up, impressively getting all their gear plugged in during the skimpy five minutes allowed between acts— as per Guinness’ stringent rules—was Blooze on the Rocks, a band that lived up to its moniker by bringing some energy to the kick-off. The five-piece dished out quintessential bar-band chops, and its audience-pleasing covers included such gems as Cab Calloway’s immortal “Minnie the Moocher,” and a rocked-out version of Del Shannon’s “Runaway.” A finale tribute to Quicksilver Messenger Service’s extended interpretation of Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?” upped the grooviness factor to the point of whooping, with worm-dancing and dirt-twirling on the dance floor and the periphery of the vast pool hall that fills the back half of The DownLo. With the audience warmed up and receptive to fun, the funky collective of musical pranksters called Smokey the Groove swarmed onto the stage, bristling with horns, bass, violin, percussion, keyboards and guitars. The so-called “Sassy Space Funk [ensemble] with an Eastern twist” won over the crowd with intricate, prolonged jams that evoked at times a hybrid of Frank Zappa’s big band, horn-driven Grand Wazoo period and Parliament-Funkadelic at their most manic.

In other words, the grooves got so deep, sitting still was not an option.

Despite a few technical challenges, the record attempt seemed off to a good start. Time will tell whether all the documentation (video, audio, physical notes) and procedural requirements will come together sufficiently to win over Guinness and bring the official record to Chico. But performance-wise, our little musical city was on point, and if nothing else, night one was a really good show. □

Eye in the Sky, a South African movie about a fictional U.S./U.K. drone strike in Kenya, tries to give us fuller access to the conflicted dramas that might play out among figures of authority and responsibility in what has become a kind of warfare by remote control.

Directed by Gavin Hood, with a script by Guy Hibbert, the film is a brisk, paradoxical combination of military procedural, political thriller and morality play. An impending drone strike on a terrorist meeting place in a crowded Kenyan city is the principal source of suspense in Eye in the Sky, but the moral, legal, political and emotional quandaries that arise in the run-up to the strike give the film its most substantial forms of drama.

Helen Mirren plays Col. Katherine Powell, the British officer who requests the strike on the known terrorist figures she’s been tracking for years. The late Alan Rickman plays Lt. Gen. Frank Benson, the British officer who heads a committee of high-level officials who must sign off on Powell’s request. Aaron Paul plays an American lieutenant who “pilots” the eponymous eye and, eventually, the weaponized drone itself, from a bunker in the Nevada desert.

Atom Egoyan’s new movie has an elderly German named Zev (Christopher Plummer) going cross country to track down the former commander of a Nazi concentration camp who’s hiding under an assumed name somewhere in North America. Zev is armed and intends to execute whichever of four suspects turns out to be the guilty man. He is both frail and resolute, but also plagued with memory problems that turn out to be even more drastic than they at first seem. Suspect No. 1 (Bruno Ganz) and suspect No. 4 (Jürgen Prochnow) make particularly noteworthy contributions to the tale. Martin Landau is gentle and sinister as the man who organizes Zev’s journey, and Dean Norris is especially good as a state patrolman with Nazi sympathies and demonic tendencies. The climactic plot twist goes a bit overboard, but much of the rest of Remember has a grubby, haunting credibility to it. Pageant Theatre. Rated R —J.C.S.

In this Best Foreign Film Oscar-nominee from Columbia, two explorer/scientists,

elaborate and increasingly contentious process that brings a foreign minister, a secretary of state and various representatives of the prime minister into the discussion. The suspense builds as the terrorists prepare for action while the policy-makers debate, and it accelerates into full-on melodrama when a neighborhood child sets up a table to sell her mother’s bread just outside the targeted building.

Hibbert’s script sets up enough moral and political quandaries to keep a graduate seminar busy for many weeks to come. But even with quality actors like Mirren and Rickman on hand, the film seems overly thin on the

Hood’s direction adroitly maintains coherence and clarity in a narrative that jumps back and forth among four sets of characters in four different locales and succeeds in making the electronic linkages among them part of the story as well.

Perhaps the best sequences in the film are those involving a Kenyan agent (Barkhad Abdi, who excelled as a Somali pirate in Captain Phillips). He, too, is armed with a remote-control surveillance device, but he alone among the anti-terrorist combatants puts his life on the line in the actual targeted locale. □

You can’t Open daily, see the food you’re choosing, you 11 a.m.-8 p.m. have to sit and wait for 15 minutes to eat, and you have to tip, everyone’s favorite encounter with karmic guilt.

There’s a new, less pressured approach to eating out, and Ready Chef Go, the catering company turned-bistro/market in tandem with the new Unwined at 980 restaurant—its more upscale and formal partner in the mall at 980 Mangrove Ave.—has it nailed. The food is premade and presented in glass cases so you can look it over. You order from a very short menu or grab a boxed meal from the cold case. If you wonder if the soup is too peppery, they give you a spoonful to try. You carry your meal to your table or home.

Everything at Ready Chef Go is unfussy: blackboard menu, soup in paper cups, plastic utensils.The décor is industrial chic—simple tables, high black ceiling with the now-obligatory exposed ducts (“Ducts, why is it always ducts?”—Galaxy Quest), gallon cans of chickpeas displayed on wire rack shelving. This approach can easily get impersonal and warehouse-y, but Ready Chef Go isn’t—it has a very pleasant aura of bustling energy, partly from the busy restaurant adjoining and

partly from the staff, who always seem up and about.

The danger with any premade food place is that the food is generally either old or automat-plain. Ready Chef Go’s food is neither. I was assured the food comes out of the kitchen hourly, and everything on the menu is interesting, bright, flavorful and healthy. Their motto is “local fresh sustainable,” and they take all of that seriously. I was told the food is organic whenever possible, and something like 85 percent of it is locally sourced—thus the Llano Seco pork chop with Lundberg brown rice and seasonal grilled trumpet mushroom.

Chef Sean Mindrum is obviously determined to tweak every dish—you can almost count on at least one unexpected ingredient in whatever you eat (e.g., bacon in the mac and cheese, lamb in the cannelloni). This can easily get out of hand, but Mindrum’s taste so far appears to be impeccable and I’ve been delighted with his choices. Still, this isn’t a place to go if you’re craving the familiar: You can’t get a Coke, but you can get a bottle of Harney & Sons organic Soothing Green Tea. The menu is Bay Area café trendy: Jamaican rice and beans, quiche, polenta, wraps and rice paper rolls, plus a salad bar that the owners take very seriously— three kinds of leaf, 24 toppings and good, interesting dressings. Prices are low considering the quality of what you’re getting—$6 for a large slice of quiche with simple but satisfying side salad, $5 for mac and cheese, $4 for a cup of soup.

The desserts are something special—made by Cory Davis of the erstwhile, legendary Cory’s Sweet Treats & Gallery, they’re worth a trip in, the oatmeal cake especially. It’s $6, and ordinarily I don’t consider $6 desserts in a world where a small sundae from Shubert’s Ice Cream & Candy can be had for $3.75, but in this case I don’t hesitate. □ A P R I L 7, 2 0 1 6

IN THE MIX We Can Do Anything Violent Femmes piAS recordings Faux-underground media outlets pooh-pooh anything derivative of anything, because they employ boring people seemingly concerned with their status as arbiters of popular culture.

(End rant.) As such, the Violent Femmes’ first studio album in 15 years is getting weirdly negative reviews noting worn similarities to the band’s 30-year-plus catalog of punk-folk pomp. We Can Do Anything may be titled thusly as a pre-emptive “fuck you” exhibiting a preternatural self-awareness some people might not recognize right away. And sure, album opener “Memory” possesses a more than passing resemblance in melody and rhythm to “Prove My Love” from their legendary 1983 debut.

It’s still a good song. “Foothills” is secretly a song about masturbation à la the classic “Blister in the Sun.” So what? Brian Ritchie’s bass is still a crisp phenomenon, and frontman Gordon Gano is still as playful as ever on songs like the religion-fearing “Holy Ghost” or the murderous ballad “Big Car.” The band’s effectiveness at exhuming the essence of its cultural existence is inspiring. It may not be reinventing the wheel, but no one’s working with the same bouncy rubber as the Violent Femmes.

After a long gap between the initial issue’s release and subsequent issues, Captain America: White is collected in its entirety in this compilation. This is Jeph Loeb (executive producer for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Jessica Jones) and Tim Sale’s fourth in their color-themed series that began with Daredevil: Yellow. The color motif is weaker than in previous series, but the creative duo do Captain America and Bucky justice with a World War II story examining friendships forged in war. Longtime Cap readers will enjoy Sale’s retrospective art—with nods to Jack Kirby as well as modern influences—but may find the story underwhelming. Loeb understands and executes the characters well; however, the story may provide more revelations to those only familiar with the characters from their recent films. Furthermore, production problems continued through printing; scattered pages have darkened art and blurred text. Poor Bucky, he can never catch a break.

The Thermals Saddle Creek Like clockwork, The Thermals release a new record of scrappy, catchy punk songs every few years, usually hinged on a theme, be it love and death, or the apocalypse and fascism. The heady topics are the perfect counterbalance to the Portland trio’s bouncy punk rock, and The Thermals have delivered again with We Disappear.

Love, death and being human permeate these 10 tracks—it sounds like similar terrain, but The Thermals also manage to mix new dynamics into their sound. “Years in a Day” and “The Great Dying” are moodier and slightly noisier, while “Hey You” carries a slightly more musty garage scent. “Into the Code” and “The Walls” are comfortably Thermals, with Hutch Harris’ nasally vocals buzzing over minor-chord riffs. Producer and former Death Cab For Cutie guitarist Chris Walla gets a punchy mix out of this set, nicely isolating Kathy Foster’s bass from the fuzz. It’s business as usual for The Thermals—and business is good.

rest in peAce Pat Kopp, one of the most important figures in the history of Chico arts, died Monday, April 4, after a lengthy battle with an undisclosed illness. He was 76. According to a Chico state campus announcement, Kopp came to town for a job as a lighting designer and stage manager at the university in 1964 and went on to work in many capacities on campus until his retirement in 2001.

Probably the most notable accomplishment of his tenure—especially when viewed through the lens of Chico today—was his development of Chico Performances. As founding director of University Public Events in 1981, Kopp spearheaded the creation and implementation of what’s arguably Chico’s most valuable cultural resource, and since 1982, Chico Performances has enriched our city with more world-class talent—everything from Philip Glass and archbishop desmond Tutu to Bill Maher and Willie nelson, plus giants in modern dance, the most popular Broadway musicals, greats of West African music and hundreds more—than we would’ve had any right to expect in our isolated Nor Cal outpost.

That legacy is on top of his work as theater director, having been at the helm of more than 45 plays and musicals, and his work in co-founding and nurturing the university’s summer Court Theatre program. Kopp was given the Mayor’s Award for Achievement in the Arts by the Chico Arts Commission in 1997, and in 1999 he Pat Kopp received the Western Arts Alliance’s Jerry Willis Award for his work as a leader in the arts. After retiring from Chico State, Kopp served as the executive director of the Paradise Performing arts Center, produced plays at Butte College and was a board member for the Turner Print Museum.

Kopp is survived by, among others, his wife of 50 years, well-known local artist Jerril dean Kopp.

As of press time, no memorial services had been announced, although a message on the Chico Performances Facebook page said, “a celebration of life, in the form of an Irish wake, will be announced at a future date.”

They filed in and out the front door. Jim found us. Here came Linda.

“How long has this been on the market?” asked Jim. “A few hours,” said the Realtor. “I have the offer ready. Quick, let’s go see the house.”

Later, I got the report. Seven offers. The house sold to a cash buyer, not Jim and Linda, for $10,000 over asking price.

he Patrick Ranch Museum is proud to be the host location for the 2016 California Nut Festival! Each year, the 28-acre property, donated by Hester Patrick in 2001, comes alive during this exciting event.

Our Visitor Center currently features a very popular exhibit: “Maps of the Past tell Our History.” The collection of old maps take you back a century and a half and open a window to our past. In addition, our gift shop has artwork from numerous local artists and craftsmen and women. We invite you to browse the many unique handcrafted items and wide variety of educational books and kits for children of all ages.

The extraordinary planned growth of our interactive agriculture museum continues. Join us in our interactive learning opportunities, including agriculture science classroom venues for students in Butte and the surrounding counties, our Family Farm Day on April 30, Sierra Oro Farm Trails participation, a month-long October “AutumnFest” featuring

“Cinderella Pumpkins,” house tours, hay rides and more; and “Christmas at Glenwood,” which includes home tours, our third annual holiday tea and an extraordinary fine art show and sale. We will host the two-day Fiber Fusion, an event celebrating natural fiber and color and sheep dog trials on October 8 and 9, 2016.

We are in the initial stages of two major fundraising efforts: building a Bee Museum and Learning Center and building a Vintage Iron Museum. The Bee Museum focuses on one of the most important insects to our natural environment and agricultural world, and the Vintage Iron Museum will allow for restoration and showing of antique farm equipment. Please join us and support our fundraising efforts.

Volunteers are the life blood of the Patrick Ranch Museum and are at the heart of any successful museum. Join our more than 90 volunteers and share a skill, an avocation, a vocation or just really enjoy people. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Carol Oxsen caroloxsen@msn.com.
