So, what to do?

Other than a legal challenge to the city—which I fully support—I think we should radically change our street culture. Move Chico toward greater inclusion—in defiance of the council. Become the city that makes compassion work.

Suggestions: 1) Get to know more people on the street. Learn their names and assure them they are welcome in Chico. 2) Supply people on the street with food and other support—such as material for staying warm and dry. Deliver the goods with the same message, “You are welcome here.” 3) Do not report the activities of homeless people unless they are a danger to themselves or others. 4) Refuse to fuel the drama associated with narratives of dysfunction—such as stories of unusual behavior, which serve only to demonize people with disabilities.

With the help of generous donors, a small group of us have been meeting and distributing food, blankets, tarps, rain ponchos, hand warmers, toothbrushes, socks, hats, packs, cash, etc., directly to people on the streets. And, we’ve been doing some listening. Some will argue this is no “real solution.”

But in the absence of real solutions, it’s an affirmation of the right to be here.

Californians moved the clock’s hand forward an hour for daylight saving time (yes, “saving,” not savings, though the latter is the colloquial version).

Thing is, losing that hour of sleep isn’t just an annoyance. According to the National Safety Council, data show that automobile accidents spike by as much as 6 percent on the Monday afterward. Additionally, rates of heart attacks and workplace injuries increase in the days that follow the switchover. The springtime shift is particularly hard on senior citizens.

Daylight saving time was first enacted in the U.S. after World War I as a way to conserve coal. It was adopted in the Golden State in 1949. The idea was that the later the sunset, the less energy consumption in the home. But experts say that theory hasn’t panned out. In fact, since pushing the clock ahead an hour encourages more evening travel and entertainment, opponents say it results in greater energy usage. Still, supporters have a host of other arguments in favor of that extra hour of sunshine.

Then there are those who simply want the time fixed—either one way or the other. One option known as permanent daylight saving time, which calls for keeping the clocks forward year-round, is increasingly popular.

Unfortunately, this plan would take federal approval. There’s an online petition with more than 80,000 signatures calling for that move, but it appears to be going nowhere.

That leaves only one other choice: getting rid of daylight saving time.

States are allowed to do this. Arizona and Hawaii, for example, have opted out. In California, there’s some traction on an effort to nix it. Last month, Assemblyman Kevin Chu introduced a bill to do just that. Even if passed by the Legislature, the voters would have the final say.

Our preference, however, is permanent daylight saving time. According to studies, keeping that extra hour of light in the evening reduces crime, encourages healthy activities associated with outdoor recreation, and would allow working folks to drive home from their jobs when it’s light outside.

Those are benefits worth the headache it would take for the feds to work with states to end this antiquated practice. □

What a hypocrite Congressman Doug LaMalfa is an obstructionist. Like the other recalcitrant

members of the GOP, the second-term representative from Richvale quickly adopted the philosophy of opposing virtually anything proposed by President Obama.

But there’s another descriptor that fits him just as well: hypocrite.

LaMalfa recently sent a mailer to North State constituents about the president’s plan to institute a $10-per-barrel oil tax to pay for “High Speed Rail, Self-Driving Cars research and other parts of the President’s climate agenda.” In the flier, LaMalfa decries the waste of taxpayer dollars on a bullet train when federal and state governments should be focused on “investing in repair and expansion of our highways and roads.” It contains a postcard survey that asks voters whether or not they support the tax.

But maintaining and constructing infrastructure is precisely what the tax would pay for, according to the Washington Post article that LaMalfa quotes in the mailer. LaMalfa forgot to mention that keeping the Highway Trust Fund sustainable is the goal of the president’s proposed tax. He also forgot to mention that, while the tax would be partially passed onto consumers at the pump, they’d save money from driving on upgraded roads. Then there’s the boon to the economy due to the jobs that would be created.

It should be noted that LaMalfa’s running for re-election and he sent off this election-mailer-disguised-as-questionairre at no expense to his campaign. Indeed, the propaganda mailer was prepared, published and mailed at taxpayer expense. What a hypocrite. □

SECOND & FLUME

Mom and media A lot of things remind me that I’m now a mother. One of the recent occasions was when CN&R’s editorial team, led by yours truly, was organizing this week’s cover story, the so-called Bar Olympics. The idea behind the piece is that, during spring break when the majority of college students are home, the townies take over the local watering holes and compete in the games the alcohol purveyors have on hand.

CN&R staffers decided to take on the challenge in anticipation of this quiet week. Mind you, this wasn’t our first rodeo. Eight years ago, Meredith J. Cooper and I, along with then-Arts Editor Mark Lore, tore up the town during this newspaper’s inaugural Bar Olympics. We rode the bull at the Crazy Horse Saloon, sang karaoke at the Maltese Bar & Tap Room and participated in perhaps the kookiest of local bar competitions, the trike races at the Madison Bear Garden. We ate. We drank. We had a blast.

But that was then, and this is now, as they say. Back then, I was in my early 30s. Today, well, I’m eight years older. And a mom. That dawned on me as we contemplated where to go and what to play this time around. I’m the only person on my editorial team who’s a parent, and just talking about going out on a Sunday and Wednesday made me exhausted. It was right then in the planning phase that I told my crew something like, “Sorry guys, but you’re on your own this time.” I then gave a brief mom-like sermon about being safe. Oh, how life has changed.

I followed that up by saying I might venture out for a single event at one of the bars. It didn’t happen. By the time Calendar Editor Ernesto Rivera texted me with a picture of Meredith putting a gigantic bra on over her clothes as she prepared for the races at The Bear, an effort to perhaps get me downtown, I was already snuggled under a blanket with my 4-year-old. That’s my happy place. I wasn’t going anywhere.

As you’ll see from a report on page 16, a good time was had by all.

Quick follow-up Last week in this space, I complained about the national media’s coverage of CNN’s Democratic debate in Flint, Mich. Specifically, that the pundits gave Hillary Clinton the edge.

I thought it was a bad call. It really burned me that some outlets were attempting to make Bernie Sanders out to be a misogynist because he interrupted Clinton’s interruptions of his answers.

(Sanders ended up winning the Michigan primary, by the way.)

Most of the coverage of the debate hosted by Univision in Miami a few nights later named Sanders the victor—an understatement. He cleaned her clock. Clinton once again cherry-picked portions of legislation to make the Vermont senator appear less progressive. She mentioned how he voted against the auto bailout, for example. But Sanders put a stop to that tactic, noting how that legislation was part of a broader bill to bail out Wall Street from its (“recklessness, irresponsibility and illegal behavior”).

He later summed things up succinctly: “Madam secretary, I will match my record against yours any day of the week.”

Out of context Re “Biblical-sanctioned abuse” (Letters, by Sherri Quammen, March 10): Sherri Quammen’s letter claimed the Bible instructs men to abuse women, which is not true. Yes, the Bible includes stories of all kinds of people doing all kinds of hideous things, but that does not mean God approves of these actions. Many of the stories in the Bible are examples of how failing to follow the law of God results in ongoing problems. You cannot pick just one section out of the Bible and take it out of context. The Bible needs to be read in its entirety in order to understand God’s desire and plan for humanity.

Re “Bridal show” (Calendar, March 10): Guns. Did you see it? On the calendar pick on page 24 of the CN&R, there’s a photo caption for a country club bridal show where the accompanying photo shows a woman dressed in a bridal gown, smoking a cigarette (yuck) and holding an AK-47.

All across the United States, there’s this litany of horrific assaults in movie theaters, shopping centers and cafés, where dozens are shot dead. Police militarization generates death.

Here in Chico, we’re adding fuel to the fire of gun violence when we advertise weddings, yes weddings, by displaying a woman with a gun. I can hear some of you saying, “Oh, get a grip; it’s just a photo.” Yes, but can you really say that, in the face of our ongoing pervasive glamorization of guns, we can brush this aside?

What about you? Do you not see how this pervasive gun culture leads too many to think that the path to conflict resolution is from the barrel of a gun? What this gets us is escalating acts of gun violence throughout the country. This wedding gear image is fun, this is cool, a bride holding an assault rifle? I feel sick.

True compassion Re “Nowhere to go” (Newsline, by Howard Hardee, March 3): At the City Council meeting that extended the criminalization of homelessness and postponed the day when Chico will have bathrooms for the entire public, the word “compassion” was bandied about a number of times.

I sincerely want people to stop talking about how compassionate they are. We are making people live under the most humiliating and uncomfortable, downright miserable conditions—and we call ourselves or other homed people compassionate? That is a sham.

We are human-rights abusers.

We are neglecting to notice that others lack the most basic elements of what is needed for sustenance.

How can we have stooped so low?

How did we become immune to feeling? What was that Second Commandment again?

I put part of the blame on the military budget and corporate greed. We have the money but not the political will to care for our own. Those who are expropriating our labor and tax dollars have also managed to redirect our common sense and send our moral compasses adrift from true north.

For the short run, stay human.

Get to know the people who are being maligned and dehumanized.

Demand services and housing.

“The first step” (Letters, by Paul Smith, March 10): I am responding to a letter suggesting that to reduce fossil fuel use in America, the U.S. should reduce legal immigration to this country. All of us (except Native Americans who arrived 15,000 years ago) are immigrants of the last 600 years. Since Christopher Columbus, people have demanded that the plank they just walked on, arriving in America, should be pulled up.

About a half-million immigrants served in the Union Army in the Civil War. Immigrants are still joining the military. I am proud to see dozens of our troops, on many

occasions, serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, being sworn in as U.S. citizens. As a result of the war in Vietnam, tens of thousands of Vietnamese, Hmong and Cambodians moved to the U.S. Alexander Hamilton (on our $10 bills) was an immigrant. Some other immigrants: Albert Einstein, Sergey Brin (co-founder of Google, born in Russia), Dr. Samia Yaqub (president of Butte-Glenn Community College), Gov. Jerry Brown’s great-grandparents, and millions of others who have made big contributions to our country’s greatness.

On reducing the use of fossil fuel, Governor Brown, President Obama, universities and industries are making great strides.

Immigrants have been part of that.

‘Our community cares’ Re “Selective charity, by Patrick Newman, Feb. 25): Patrick Newman’s condemnation of Joe Montes and Michael Madieros is pure cow flop.

The evidence is overwhelming that our community cares for the homeless. Witness the outpouring of money donations, volunteer work and the opening of churches and faculties for emergency shelter.

It may not always be enough, but it is great enough to prove that we are a town full of compassion and caring.

Anyone who fails to see that is either ignorant of reality or suffering from a hunger of the ego that feeds on the delusion that they are the only one who cares.

It is said that all humans are made in God’s image and we are all connected, therefore to care for others is basic to our humanity.

However, if anyone, whether in the top 1 percent or in the bottom 1 percent, treats another with disrespect or acts in a way that is disgusting and beneath the level of human dignity, we should not accept it. If we accept and tolerate such conduct, we then define that person by this conduct and degrade and insult them.

I was at a meeting of several homeless folks when a beautiful lady said to the group, “You know that I love you, but you have to

quit leaving your trash on the sidewalk.”

Stop being sycophants The usual sycophant Democratic letter-writers have all chimed in with their “we know what’s best for you” rants, complete with their usual anti-Donald Trump fictitious facts made up by the their Supreme Democrat Party leader, Porky the Pig, and passed down the line as talking points.

Porky the Pig? Oh, I meant George (I’m a billionaire socialist) Soros. He now is funding the MoveOn.org, whose members have intentionally disrupted Trump rallies. As an independent voter, do you see any of Hillary Clinton’s or Bernie Sanders’ rallies being disrupted by Trump supporters?

Meanwhile, those progressive (socialist) liberals here in California got their students demanding a free college education at the same time that CSU faculty members are demanding higher wages or they go on strike.

Bodenhamer, Feb. 25): I was so pleased to read that another respondent sang the accolades of Rob Brezsny’s astrological horoscopes. There have been quite a few times in my life that I would cut them out and to this day have still saved them, as they were pivotal moments in my life.

Free speech, part two Re “Read the entire text” (Letters,

by Paul Cella, Mar. 10): In response to my own Feb. 25 letter arguing against the election and appointment of religious government administrators, Paul Cella wrote, “I would suggest [Esplanade] read the entire First Amendment, which states that Congress shall make no law... prohibiting the free exercise of religion.”

Barring religious people from public office doesn’t prohibit their free exercise of religion—it protects it. That is, by precluding officials from using governmental power to force citizens to comply with their own religious beliefs.

A classic example of such is Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis’ recent denial of marriage licenses to gay couples, saying in doing so she was acting “under God’s authority.”

Cella also said, “I would also suggest that [Esplanade] read the last sentence of Article 6, which states that ‘no religious test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public trust under the United States.’”

This clause was meant as a further safeguard to exclude religion from government—not as a back door allowing it in. In so doing it aimed to preclude government from discriminating against constituents on the basis of their religion.

It was this last year, when I turned 21. I was naive and didn’t know what a chaser was, and I told the bartender we didn’t need them.

Filmmakers Sue Hilderbrand and Dan Carter are tackling gun issues after working together on a film about California’s drought.

Pleasant Valley High School was one of 15 high schools throughout the country recently awarded $50,000 to develop an athletic training program. The grant is part of a joint initiative involving the NFL, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Gatorade and the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society.

An NFL press release notes that the presence of trainers reduces student athletes’ injury rates and improves diagnoses and decisions on whether athletes should return to play following concussions and other injuries.

Pleasant Valley has nearly 1,200 students, but it lacks an athletic trainer; with the newly awarded funding through the so-called Athletic Trainer Initiative, the school hopes to employ an athletic trainer with teaching credentials to cover sporting events as well as teach medicine and health classes.

Former pro football player Jordan Rodgers— the younger brother of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron—will appear on season 12 of ABC reality show The Bachelorette, and some material is being filmed in Chico.

A recent Facebook post by Whole Body Fitness shows Rodgers working out with a film crew in tow. Us Weekly and other sources confirmed earlier this month that he will be among the contestants vying for the affections of Joelle “JoJo” Fletcher, who previously appeared on The Bachelor.

The Rodgers brothers are from Chico and played football at Pleasant Valley High School and Butte College. Jordan was signed to three NFL teams and last played in Canada for the BC Lions. He retired from football last year.

The Bachelorette premieres in May.

On Wednesday morning (March 16), Patrick Feaster (pictured) pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter at Butte County Superior Court in the shooting death of Andrew Thomas last Thanksgiving weekend.

Feaster was a Paradise police officer who followed Thomas from the now-closed Canteena bar the night of Nov. 25 on suspicion of driving under the influence. While speeding down Pearson Road, Thomas’ SUV hit a median and flipped.

Thomas was attempting to exit the vehicle when Feaster aimed and fired his sidearm, hitting Thomas in the neck and paralyzing him. The incident was caught on Feaster’s dashcam.

Feaster, who faced no criminal charges until after Thomas died Dec. 19, was arrested Sunday (March 13) on charges of being drunk and disorderly. He was subsequently ordered to not drink alcohol or enter any drinking establishments.

“It’s funny the way we venerate the Founders, because we end up not venerating them as they really existed but as these mythic people that are more like puppets we imbue with our own ideals and obsessions and fears,” said Cornell, a Fordham University professor, author and legal expert, by phone from New York. “But it was a different time … they invented this very impressive system of government, but they also owned slaves and believed

women had the same legal rights as the dead once they married.

“It wasn’t the time to get a toothache because you wouldn’t want to go to an 18th century dentist, but on the other hand, it was the time of Mozart … a remarkable age but not a modern one,” Cornell quipped. “Once you look at things in those terms, the way we talk about a lot of things today just doesn’t make any sense.”

Cornell believes there’s room for more

than the diametrically opposed stances and bumper-sticker arguments clung to by people on both sides of the gun issue, a view he shares with local community radio-host-cum-documentary-producer Sue Hilderbrand and her cohort, veteran videographer Dan Carter.

Hilderbrand and Carter are working on their second collaborative effort, a documentary titled One Nation Under the Gun, which intends to look at America’s gun obsession and omnipresent conflict from often-overlooked perspectives.

They first worked together last year on a five-part documentary series about North State water issues called The California Drought: The New Normal. After the final product was shown on PBS last October, the duo began looking for a new topic and

settled on the gun issue.

They hope to have the film shown nationwide on PBS stations by September.

Southern Oregon Public Broadcasting is acting as a fiscal agent for the documentary, and on March 10, the creators launched a 30-day Kickstarter campaign to help crowdfund $70,000 of the budget. As of press time, the campaign had raised more than $8,000.

“We didn’t really want to take a position, per se, or push a pro- or anti-gun agenda, because the more we talked about it, the more we realized that it’s not so black and white,” Hilderbrand said. “The issue is complicated, but the argument is generally very superficial.”

To help develop the film’s focus, the duo formed an advisory board featuring seven American and Canadian scholars, of which Cornell is a member, with widely differing views on guns. Other members include sociologists, historians and legal experts, all of whom met in Sacramento last month for a day-long brainstorming session aimed at establishing a mission statement and outlining topics for the film.

Hilderbrand said that mass shootings garner the most headlines, but the actual statistics about gun deaths reveal other concerns. She noted approximately two-

thirds of those deaths are suicides, and that black men and female victims of domestic abuse account for disproportionate percentages of victims. Despite those numbers, she said the voices of minorities and conversations about depression, mental illness and domestic violence are largely absent from the national dialogue.

At press time, the documentary makers were filming in Austin, Texas, where statewide laws allowing the open carrying of firearms were enacted in January, and those permitting concealed weapons on college campuses will take effect in August. Demonstrating the types of interviews on tap for the film, Hilderbrand said that in Texas she’ll be talking to a group of black anti-gun activists as well as members of the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, a pro-gun group whose name pays homage to the co-founder of the Black Panther Party.

“The anti-gun activists feel their race makes them the embodiment of something threatening to white people who say they need guns for self-defense, so they advocate for gun control.” Hilderbrand explained. “So you have two groups: one that wants to stay armed to push back against state abuse and another who wants to disarm everyone.”

Another topic of the film is how guns became such an integral part of the American identity. Advisory board member Pamela Haag wrote the soon-to-be-published The Gunning of America: Business and the Making of a Gun Culture, which posits the role of firearms in the country’s history is largely fiction created to sell guns.

“In the early 1900s, people began moving to big cities and guns were no longer necessary, so they had to come up with a new marketing campaign,” Hilderbrand elaborated. “So that’s when you begin to see the idea that being a real American and a real man means owning a gun. It was a concentrated effort, and then Hollywood came along with John Wayne and all these gunslinging lawmen and frontiersmen. Most of that stuff isn’t historically accurate; it’s manufactured mythology.”

Hilderbrand said the project’s ultimate goal is to inspire further discussion.

“We want people to walk away from this film with more questions than answers, because that’s when we have real conversation and real democracy,” she said. “If you walk away saying, ‘Now I know what’s right and wrong,’ that gets us no further.” □

Instruction, interrupted University faculty set to strike, administration says teaching will continue hico State’s campus is quiet this week because of spring break, but it’s the proCverbial calm before the storm. For five days

next month, professors and instructors, along with their colleagues throughout the CSU system, will be making a racket in picket lines instead of leading classrooms—unless their demand for a 5 percent salary increase is met.

The California Faculty Association is currently at an impasse in salary negotiations with the CSU Office of the Chancellor, and the strike, set for April 13-15 and 18-19, is overwhelmingly supported by the university’s rank-and-file. About 80 percent of CSU faculty members voted and, of those, nearly 95 percent were in favor of walking out.

It’s not a move that teachers take lightly, said Tim Sistrunk, president of the CFA’s local chapter and a history professor at Chico State.

“A strike is a last attempt to change things,” he said. “The faculty are all people who’ve spent their lives educating, so not to do it is pretty serious. … But, yeah, if you’re suddenly missing days out of class, you’ll miss instruction.”

In a university-wide email on Feb. 24, however, Chico State President Paul Zingg said that some classes may be canceled, but that the campus will remain open. The email also contained suggestions that rub some faculty members the wrong way: Classroom time shouldn’t be used to discuss issues

related to the strike, and that media requests for comment should be run through the university’s Office of Public Affairs.

Similar messages were sent out on all 23 CSU campuses, which, to Sistrunk, indicates that the Chancellor’s Office is out of touch with classrooms.

“There’s academic freedom; there’s the open exchange of ideas,” he said. “To tell people what they can’t talk about—especially if it’s specific to their life at the university—is an astounding assertion.”

Zingg told the CN&R by email that “my message does not question nor infringe on academic freedom whatsoever. No one on this campus will be monitoring what occurs in classrooms. That does not happen now, and it will not be occurring within a strike environment.”

As for speaking with media, which he characterized as “a fundamental right of expression,” Zingg said he meant to relate that the Office of Public Affairs may have information on strike protocols “with which not everyone

may be familiar. Certainly, anyone can choose to speak with the media, or not.”

Some faculty members refer to their demand

for a 5 percent pay bump as “salary restoration,” rather than an increase, that would make up for a decade of stagnation. Though the CSU Chancellor’s Office did approve a 2 percent raise for some faculty members last year, wages overall haven’t kept pace with the rising cost of living, Sistrunk said.

According to the CFA, student tuition has increased 283 percent since 2000, while, from 2004 to 2014, spending on managers’ salaries rose by 48 percent. The CFA’s four-part essay series, Race to the Bottom, notes that, “by the year 2014, the average full-time salary for a CSU manager/supervisor was $106,149 per year while the average full-time salary for a CSU faculty member was $64,479.” Sistrunk added that the salaries of campus presidents—which range from $236,484 to $422,300 per year—are a symptom of the corporatization of the CSU system.

“The university shouldn’t be run like it’s a private-sector, profit-driven corporation— it’s a public trust,” he said. “The people of California pay taxes to have their children educated. … It’s not supposed to be a money-making enterprise.”

There’s money in the system, Sistrunk maintained, but instruction hasn’t been prioritized.

“It’s about creating a system of education that is sustainable,” he said. “Right now, it isn’t.”

pend just a few minutes with Natalie Carter and you’re bound to notice traits that might seem conStradictory.

She’s energetic yet tranquil, passionate yet

practical, creative yet methodical, extemporaneous yet reflective.

Perhaps this stems from her background—an aspiring filmmaker turned biologist—or perhaps it’s just her makeup. Whatever the reason, her distinct qualities have propelled Carter to prominence in Chico’s green scene the past few years, most notably as general manager of the Chico Certified Farmers’ Market (where she’s also a grower-vendor).

So, imagine her surprise at a passing comment, which stung despite all she’s accomplished.

“I had this woman tell me, ‘Oh, no one takes you seriously until you’re 30,’” Carter recalled Tuesday (March 15), during an interview downtown.

The very next day, in December, Carter turned 30. Soon she heard through the grapevine that Robyn DiFalco would be stepping down as Butte Environmental Council’s executive director.

“Very quickly after, I was applying for the job,” Carter continued, “and I was like, ‘Well, maybe they’ll take me seriously now!’”

She let out a hearty laugh—and, indeed, she’s gotten the last laugh, because March 1 she began her tenure as BEC executive director. Carter applied because she cares deeply about the environment and making a difference locally, in her hometown, but the timing of it all proved a delicious coincidence.

A nonprofit headquartered in downtown Chico, BEC is an advocacy and educational organization focused on air, land-use and water issues in the North

State. The group formed in 1975. Mark Stemen, a professor at Chico State and chair of the city’s Sustainability Task Force, is president of BEC’s 13-member board.

Stemen said BEC considered 17 applicants, including six from out of state, before selecting Carter.

“She’s wise beyond her years; she’s experienced beyond her years,” he said. “Who else do you know who’s just turned 30 who’s been president of a huge, successful nonprofit [Chico Natural Foods] and been the general manager of another successful nonprofit [the farmers’ market]?

“We didn’t see age in that at all; we saw experience.”

She will continue to serve on the Parking Access Resource Committee, a private group tackling downtown transportation issues. Otherwise, Carter will stay on the same track as DiFalco, who let BEC know well ahead of her departure that she planned to spend more time with family.

“I was excessively fortunate that I got my first two weeks [overlapping] with Robyn,” Carter said.

“That was the perfect introduction to this.”

Carter grew up in Chico but planned

to move to Los Angeles for college—she got accepted to the renowned film school at USC, she said. Instead, she decided to stay home and attend Butte College. A biology class there transformed her from an artist to a scientist, and she graduated from Chico State in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in general biology.

She worked in Reno as a biologist and surveyor at the Great Basin Bird Observatory until her hometown beckoned. Along with serving on the CNF co-op board, she’s put in a two-year stint as treasurer of the Honey Run Covered Bridge Association.

She and her husband, Eric, farm a small patch of land in Chico.

They are parents to a 2-year-old daughter, Aria, whom Carter credits with shifting her perspective.

“I’ve always had my finger on the environment and community preservation,” she said, “but having Aria put more emphasis for me on impacting the future….

“Caring about her entire lifetime makes long-term planning a little more long-term, so it changed my perspective that way … but it didn’t change my focus on having a healthy environment, a healthy community, preserving everything that’s wonderful about Chico.”

Silent treatment For deaf children, success in life starts with learning communication skills by

That’s often the case for deaf children.

For various reasons, most parents don’t pick up the skills necessary to use sign language at high or even passable levels, says Casi Ragsdale, a speech language pathologist who works in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program through the Butte County Office of Education (BCOE). Since their work generally involves improving a student’s oral communication, very few speech pathologists work with deaf people, and most know just enough sign language to “get through a three-minute conversation with a baby.”

The same can be said of many parents of deaf children. And the resulting communication problems can manifest outside of the home in surprising ways.

Ragsdale recalled an example. “I had a scooped-neck shirt on, and was wearing a pretty necklace. One girl who’s 10 or 11, she reached right into my shirt to grab the necklace,” she said. “[If I’m that girl], at home, it’s totally worthless to try and tell mom and dad, ‘I want that,’ or ‘I need that.’

Communication is too difficult. So, whatever I want, I’m going to physically get for myself.”

Using her background in signing, Ragsdale works with deaf students on developing language skills, which serve as a framework for thinking as much as speaking. And whereas hearing children benefit from language-rich environments, deaf children usually don’t have strong language models until they enter school at 3 or 5 years old. “By then, much of the window to learn language has already closed,” she said. “So, these kids have a lot of really impactful deficits.”

In some cases, 5- or 6-year-old students can’t express their most basic needs. “I’m teaching them to say, ‘I want more’ or ‘I don’t like that.’”

On school days, BCOE buses students who are

deaf or hard of hearing from throughout Butte County to Durham. The Deaf and Hard of Hearing program is small—just 23 students ranging from age 3 to 18—but it’s situated on the campus shared by Durham’s elementary, junior and high schools.

The school offers a sense of community, which is important because deaf stu-

dents tend to feel isolated, Ragsdale says.

Meaningful connections are hard to come by if you can’t communicate with most peers or family members. For many students Ragsdale works with, their deaf classmates and teachers become like family. “They’re isolated from all of society,” she said.

That’s an observation shared by Teresa Tolzmann, who’s taught deaf and hearingimpaired students for the last 27 years, including the last four with BCOE in Durham. In the classroom, she wears multiple hats on a daily basis—sometimes she’s a mom, a counselor or a friend.

Her husband, Todd, has been profoundly deaf since birth. After decades as a cabinetmaker in Oregon, Todd retired and now assists his wife in the classroom.

“Todd is a magnet for the kids,” Tolzmann said. “He has that charisma; kids, especially, are attracted to him. … And it’s really important for them to have a signing, deaf man as a role model. In my 27 years of teaching, I’ve met only a handful of dads who sign.”

Some parents, men and women alike, learn only basic commands in sign language—i.e., “sit,” “stay,” “come,” “no” and “eat”—and rarely anything more sophisti-

cated. That makes discussing their child’s day at school, homework, emotional state or friendships—or, when the child becomes an adolescent and it becomes pertinent to talk

about the complexities of romantic relationships, sex and drugs—nearly impossible.

Tolzmann says she is frustrated, sometimes, by parents who don’t learn to sign. As with any language, it’s easier to become fluent if one begins learning during childhood, and the earliest cues are picked up at home.

“You have to invest in your kid,” she said. “You have to learn this to communicate with your child, and you have to become proficient. Kids have challenges communicating at a higher level than what’s modeled for them.”

Tolzmann doesn’t say that without compassion. She realizes that some parents, especially those on limited incomes, “are just surviving and have to work multiple jobs.” Making the time to learn an entirely new language isn’t easy. Additionally, parents often have difficulty accepting that their child is deaf. “Your dreams of having a hearing child are changed,” she explained.

“Sometimes parents go through a grieving process and they delay learning to sign.”

But time is of the essence.

“You have a window of oppor-

tunity with your child,” she said.

“Synapses are closing. You can grieve later, but right now, your kid needs you.”

As for whether a parent’s inability to understand him or her will handicap a child into adulthood, it all depends, Tolzmann and Ragsdale agree. With increased screening and better technology, parents generally know at birth whether their child is hearing or deaf. Ideally, counselors would be assigned to guide new parents of deaf children toward available resources. But the onus remains on individual families to make sure a deaf child’s language skills are developing, and for that child to want to learn.

Tolzmann recalled one profoundly deaf student whose parents “really pushed him to be independent,” and another with mild hearing loss who was over-sheltered by his parents.

“The profoundly deaf boy was far more successful in life, and turned out to be less disabled than the boy who was just a little hard of hearing,” she said. “One boy was made to think ‘disabled,’ while the other was made to think ‘independent.’” □

oil derailed and exploded in the small ICanadian town of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, n July 2013, a train loaded with crude

killing 47 people. The blast and ensuing fire destroyed 30 buildings—about half of the city center—and another 39 structures were eventually torn down due to petroleum contamination.

Closer to home, the Los Angeles Times reported last year that 45,000 acres of farmland in Kern County are being irrigated with “produced water” containing oil, acetone and carcinogenic benzene. Produced water is a byproduct of hydraulic fracturing, the controversial process by which water is mixed with chemicals and injected into the ground to crack the earth and release natural gas and oil.

Though California water and the Canadian train disaster may seem far removed from one another, Frack-Free Butte County spokesman Dave Garcia believes they are intimately related. Garcia helped connect the dots at a meeting of the Sierra Club Yahi Group last Thursday (March 10).

He also was promoting an initiative on the June primary ballot—Measure E—created by the local fractivist group calling for a local ban on the extraction process.

Garcia’s presentation was called “What Do Flint, Mich., the Porter Ranch Methane Leak and the Butte County Fracking Ban Have in Common?” The short answer, he said, is “government incompetence.”

Garcia noted that a lack of oversight and bureaucratic buck-passing played roles in the months-long, Los Angeles-area methane gas leak and the ongoing Flint water crisis. On the local front, he said Butte County officials have displayed a shocking lack of awareness

about Butte County’s fracking potential that he believes necessitates a ban to keep the county safe.

“About three years ago, the Butte Environmental Council wrote a letter to Butte County asking if fracking could happen here,” Garcia said. “We got a letter back from a senior planner saying that they were unaware of any gas or oil wells in Butte County. So I started doing research and found out there are actually 32 wells [with the potential to be fracked] here.”

Garcia said county officials also claimed there were no new wells dug locally in the last 25 years, based on the fact that no conditional use permits had been issued.

Garcia’s own research uncovered five wells dug since 1999, and the county chalked the mistake up to a change in the permitting process in 2012 (see “Cracks in the foundation,” Newslines, July 2, 2015).

“This is who’s supposed to be regulating these things and they have no idea what’s going on in their own county,” Garcia said.

During the 90-minute presentation, Garcia

shared four videos that displayed further commonalities between environmental offenses.

The Lac-Mégantic explosion and the issue of oil-industry wastewater as irrigation were featured in two separate videos, a documentary produced by The Weather Channel and InsideClimate News called Boom and a news segment produced by Al Jazeera America covering the Kern County water debacle.

The Canadian disaster was, as Garcia put it, “made in America,” as the oil originated

from North Dakota’s Bakken Formation, and Bakken oil is much more explosive than crude oil mined traditionally. The produced water used for irrigation in the San Joaquin Valley is sold to the Cawelo Water District

by Chevron, and the Al Jazeera cameras showed reservoirs filled with mucky water containing what clearly appeared to be oil.

Garcia noted that oil trains travel along the Feather and Sacramento rivers and through Chico and Oroville. He also said that produce grown with fracking wastewater is sold locally at major supermarkets, sometimes even with an organic certification. Mother Jones ran an article (“These Popular Fruit and Veggie Brands May Be Grown With Oil Wastewater”) in July 2015, listing several of the brands by name.

by Josh Fox, is a follow-up to his 2010 film Gasland. It focuses on how the oil industry uses pseudo-science and spins information to make questionable practices seem safe, including leaked oil industry documents that prove there are still problems with fracking involving well safety and water contamination.

Gasland was targeted by oil companies that claimed footage of Dimock, Penn., farmers lighting their tap water on fire couldn’t have been caused by fracking operations. Garcia noted after the film that, on the day of his Sierra Club presentation, a jury had ordered Cabot Oil and Gas Corp. to pay two Dimock farmers a total of $4.24 million.

In 2014, Frack-Free Butte County gathered more than 10,000 signatures to put the fracking ban initiative to Butte County voters, but a legal challenge from oil indus-

try lawyers held up the petition based on minor errors (see “Goliath goes to court,” Newslines, June 26, 2014). Eventually, the county Board of Supervisors opted to hold the initiative for review for 30 days, which postponed the vote until this year.

Garcia expects an even tougher fight this time around, and the group has already started fundraising efforts. He noted oil companies spent millions fighting fracking bans in San Benito and Santa Barbara counties.

“It’s going to be a long and expensive fight,” he said. □

If you’re hungry for a hearty breakfast, hung over or just want to feel a little love and kindness in the morning, Marcella Morse is ready to please. Patrons at The Roost diner on Park Avenue, where Morse works, are frequent targets of her well-honed congeniality, often greeted with a “Good morning, honey” or “Would you like some coffee, honey?” Not unlike June Cleaver, Morse stands behind the counter with her pot of coffee and her smiling face. And she didn’t get there overnight. Morse is an icon in the world of Chico eateries. What remains constant is her cheery attitude and gracious service. Morse has been waitressing since 1963 when, as a teenager, she learned her trade from her mother at the family’s eatery in Willows. She’s seen it all—hung over, tipsy, grouchy, charming, old, young and in-between. She honed her skills by working “dinner houses” for years, most notably Pat and Larry’s Steakhouse. Working for the late Larry Juanarena and his wife, Patsy, for a dozen years, Morse followed the couple to the Park Avenue Steakhouse and Cafe, now The Roost and owned by Larry’s niece, Linda Juanarena. “I went with the family and the building,” Morse joked.

In my day, you respected your parents and if they said, “You work,” you did. My mom taught me to be respectful of others and keep your voice down—you never know who might be at the counter. Make sure to add up your ticket right away; you don’t want to forget one thing ordered, and when the customer is done, they want get up and go.

People who are polite and treat you with respect.

Blue-collar people are respectful of folks that work.

I know most of my customers by name. I like young people. I do think it’s funny when they wear pants that look like pajama bottoms into the cafe. It’s a different generation.

Ever deal with an unruly patron?

Larry’s—usually they were intoxicated. If they were not nice, we didn’t have to serve them. Sometimes just switching waitresses would work. We don’t serve alcohol at The Roost, so it hasn’t been a problem. A customer just might be in a bad mood, but that happens in a blue moon. Mom also taught me to “kill ’em with kindness” and make sure they have enough coffee!

What do you love about your job?

I love people and I love the people I work with—they’re great. It helps to serve really good, fresh food with top ingredients.

What’s the craziest or funniest thing you’ve seen while working?

Once at Pat and Larry’s, a lady just went to sleep with her head on the table. I didn’t want to embarrass her.

I walked about 10 feet away and clapped my hands loudly. She woke up, never knowing anyone saw her snoozing.

this year and was excited to check it out. Thankfully, my co-workers and I had decided to challenge each other to a Bar Olympics (check out “Battle of the bar games,” page 16), and I took that opportunity to add Quackers to the schedule.

When we first walked in to what used to be the Crystal Room, I was blown away. Five pool tables—two 8-footers, two 9-footers and the L-shaped table that used to be at The Beach (and, before that, the University Bar). The felt is all new and is a cool gray color. And the coin-op mechanisms allow for players to pay by the game or by the hour. I’d never seen that before— pretty cool.

We had a lot of fun while we were there. The room was large and comfortable, with its own bar and a pretty impressive chandelier on the ceiling. Next time, I’ll go for more than an hour so I can sample the menu.

Ever since Robert Mowry (who owns Panama Bar & Cafe, University Bar and The Beach) bought the place about a year ago, several changes have taken place. First, they changed the name to Quackers Bar & Grill and started serving food. In addition, Edwards—the swankier, more intimate bar just inside the main entrance—closed. According to a Quackers employee, Edwards is slated to become a card room sometime later this year. Stay tuned.

ShaMe oN theM When I heard recently that Chico’s Hometown Buffet closed, I said a silent “Oh, well.” Obviously the chain restaurant did decent business, but it was far from my cup of tea. But then I heard that the company had given its employees no notice whatsoever. That’s lame. For many corporations—like Hometown Buffet, apparently—employees are just numbers; they’re not individuals with families to support and rent to pay. I wish all those who lost their jobs the best of luck.

he business plan of a bar seems pretty straightforward: provide beer, booze and at least passable savory snacks as cheaply as possible, and people will come. But, since every bar is using basically the same formula, in order to stand out—especially in a college town—establishments need to do more. And in Chico, every watering hole features some level of additional distraction: live music, comedy, Giants games on giant TVs, DJs, karaoke and games—lots and lots of different games. There are table games (pool, ping-pong, foosball, etc.), video games, board games, trivia nights, card games, darts; something for everyone every night of the week.

And since this issue of the CN&R lands on the traditionally festive St. Patrick’s Day holiday— and during the week Chico State traditionally schedules its spring break and diverts students from its sphere of responsibility—the time seemed right for us to celebrate our local purveyors of fun at a time when their chief clientele is off partying elsewhere, and at a time when the town is quiet enough to coax locals out to make up for their absence.

So, to gauge the possibilities for gameplay in Chico, we organized a competition, a Bar Olympics if you will, featuring some of the “seasoned” members of the editorial staff competing in 10 different games at 10 different bars/restaurants. We even dragged along a couple of young’uns to beat up on … er, we mean, to keep the oldsters sharp.

We went out twice. First, on a Sunday night, with four stops and four contestants—Managing Editor Meredith J. Cooper, Arts Editor Jason Cassidy, Assistant News/Healthlines Editor Howard Hardee and 23-year-old intern Mason Masis (someone needed to take notes … and accept humiliations gracefully). That was followed by a Wednesday night, six-venue/event marathon, with additional players—Staff Writer Ken Smith (pulling double-duty by competing and celebrating his 40th birthday) and Calendar Editor Ernesto Rivera (a recent Chico State grad charged with smart-ass retorts and keeping Mason’s spirits up) joining the rest in competition.

What follows is both a diary of our 10-event progressive party of games and revelry, told by the winners of each event, as well as a guide for locals to go out and play while the students are away. As you’ll read, Howard won the most games. But in spending time with friends, sharing beers and laughs, tears and beer-soaked bras, we were all winners.

All feet on the table

The owners of the DownLo should change its name to The Basement. It’s underground, there’s a bar, snacks, widescreen TVs, occasionally bands will play shows down there, and there are a ton of games—darts, a mini shuffleboard table, pool (10 Foosball Diamond tables!) and, in one dark corner, a solitary foosball table at which we kicked off our 10-event Olympiad.

With pints in hand, and under cloak of darkness (neither the bartender nor anyone in our posse could locate a light switch), the four who made it out on this first night quickly whittled down to two finalists, with yours truly facing off against Mason. Being journalists and all, we didn’t bother to look up any rules and simply played firstto-10-points wins (instead of five, as it is actually played), and after surging ahead 8-6, the intern was summarily skunked.

My strategy was two-fold: Pay enough attention after each point to ensure my goal-defenders were realigned and ready to block, and when the ball was in play, violently spin the foot-

baller-kebobs any time the ball is remotely in the vicinity. Apparently, spinning is a frowned-upon technique in “table football,” but whatever, it’s not like the intern’s going to do anything about it.

It’s a lot of things all at once, and it’s best to not overthink Shuffleboard it. If you have a craving to drink, play, hunt, eat, fish or dance, they’ll take care of you.

One of the many things under the roof of the south Chico gathering place—at the far end of the building under a row of mounted animal heads—is a shuffleboard table. With time constraints and the distraction of plates of delicious fried fish and potatoes informing our approach—we stationed two players on either side of the long table and played four at once, with the winner being whomever was in the lead when we had to bail. The intern and Meredith

offered as much resistance as a weighted puck gliding across a slick, sandy surface, and it came down to Howard and myself. With one final turn to go, he led 11-10, and then my last gently arcing shuffle curved around the other pucks and landed snugly in the 3-point zone as the spirits of vanquished wildlife howled in support.

Mostly by luck of the draw, I was the first to seven. My personal favorite winning card asked, “What’s the most emo?” The answer, it turned out, was geese. Geese are the most emo.

Oh, the humanity!

Going for bulls-eye

We started our second—and final—night out on the north end of town at a funky little bar called Shenanigan’s. I love the feel of this place. It’s like being in an old house (because it is an old house), with private little alcoves and a Darts nice open bar.

When we arrived—Ken joined us, but Jason and Ernesto were running late—we ordered beers and made our way to the basement, where there are two nice pool tables and an oldschool jukebox with a constantly rising volume button. We were there to play darts, and the aficionados among us (if you could call them that) settled on a game of cricket. The goal is to hit three each of everything from 15 to bulls-eye, with the thin outer ring counting double and the thin inner ring and dead-center bulls-eye counting triple.

Howard came out to an early lead while the rest of us worked at hitting our marks. We were all pretty even by the final round, in which Howard was shooting for three bulls and I needed a 20, 15 and three bulls. In that one turn, though, I hit the 20, then the 15 and finally the dead-center bulls-eye. Take that!

(The sad part of this story is that for days my arm was totally sore from repeatedly throwing those tiny projectiles.)

Balls to the wall

It was fairly busy in Quackers’ new pool room when we arrived, but we lucked out and Pool got a table, one of the 8-footers, and deposited enough cash ($4) to cover us for an hour.

We decided that since I play pool, like, all the time, the guys would play off to determine who would face me. (And I crossed my fingers I’d win!)

First up was Jason vs.

Howard. There were some pretty awesome shots in this game, and after a short 8-ball battle, Howard sunk it. Unfortunately, he sunk the cue ball, too. The second game, though, between Mason and Ken, was a doozy.

Early on, the 8-ball found its way to the corner pocket, blocking just about every one of Mason’s stripes and one of Ken’s solids. It was really only a matter of time before one of them knocked it in early, and sure enough that honor went to Mason.

Somehow I missed most of the playoff between Jason and Ken—all I know is the birthday boy (Ken) came out the victor. Then it was my turn.

I screwed together my cues, donned my super fashionable glove, and let him have it. To be fair, he made a few good shots and left me some pretty tough ones. But yeah, I got him.

Pizza that fateful Wednesday, where my “News” team (Howard, Mason and myself) steamrolled our co-workers on the Meredith-led “Review” team (which also included Jason and Ernesto) in two rounds of trivia. We cinched the victory 10 to 8 by knowing things like Pax is the Roman goddess of peace, a female horse under 4 years old is called a filly, and that MacBeth takes place in Scotland.

We headed across the street and underground to the University Bar for air hockey. I wasn’t feeling so hot about the Bar Air Hockey Olympics, considering my heartbreaking losses in shuffleboard, drunken spelling and darts. The only event I’d won at that point was Cards Against Humanity— not even a true bar game. Maybe I’d lost my touch.

So I watched somewhat anxiously as Mason and Ernesto duked it out (Mason won handily) and then Jason defeated Meredith. Then, in the game to decide who’d play me, Meredith beat Ernesto 7-2, to Ernesto’s everlasting shame. Meredith and I had a hard-fought match, which I won 7-3, but I was totally sweating it.

Next up was Jason, my longtime nemesis. Before inserting the coins, he told me, “If I win, you’ll lose to a 46-yearold man.”

Nothing gets this typically mild-mannered reporter fired up like shit talk. Apparently, I got visibly serious, because I was roundly mocked by the peanut gallery for assuming an “athletic stance” and my “nice form.” Turns out my stupidly competitive side just needed some prodding.

I dispatched Jason 7-1, and I’m pretty sure I heard him whimper a little. Next up was Mason. I could see hope in his eyes, which, of course, had to be extinguished. After drubbing the intern 7-2, I left the U-Bar with a little swagger in my step.

I pedaled furiously, but while making a turn around the bathrooms, my foot slipped off. I’d botched it. No—do it for Ken, I thought, and hit the nitros.

The beer-chugging part was gross because it was Bud Light. Also, I was breathing in the fumes of burning rubber. From the tires. Because that’s how fast I went.

My time: 20.44 seconds, right in Jason’s face.

Our last stop was The Oasis, which bills itself as Chico’s longest-running college bar.

It was past midnight and pretty much everyone was drunk and loud.

The game was ping-pong, which historically I’ve taken way too seriously. Again, Jason was talking mild smack Ping Pong because Meredith and I were tied in total events, 3-3, and this decided the Bar Olympics gold medal winner. No matter. He didn’t know how much ping-pong I’d played over many long, dark Alaskan winters.

My first opponent was the always-gregarious Ernesto, who, though charming, couldn’t return a serve to save his life. I skunked him 7-0.

My final threat was Jason, who can return a serve. We had some good rallies, but by game point the score was, like, 20-6, or something just as silly.

Obviously, I delivered the final blow, crushing a ball past Jason—who, by my razor-sharp recollection, was openly weeping—and fulfilling my destiny as undisputed bar-games champion of the universe, or the office or whatever. Surely it was the culmination of my journalism career, the reason I went to college and played all those bar games.

What I didn’t know: The winner was obligated to pose on the cover of the CN&R in a really tight-fitting track suit. So, yeah. Sorry, public.

Off to the races

The trike races at Madison Bear Garden, held every Wednesday at 10 p.m. sharpish, go like this: While ernesto rivera wearing a funny helmet (mandatory) and bra (optional, but it takes 10 seconds off your time), you ride a lap around the bar and then chug a beer. The clock stops once said beer is pounded.

As the last CN&R staffer to race, I concluded that nothing gives me more than watchTrike Races joy ing Meredith ride a tricycle. The time to beat, however, was Jason’s (21.10 seconds).

Ken gave me a pep talk. “For the rest of us, this is all fun and games,” he said. “But I expect a performance out of you. You’ve got to crush these fools.”

It may sound odd, and even a little ridiculous, but the show has been on the road off and on for the better part of three years.

The CN&R caught up with Glass to get the lowdown on the production, which comes to Chico March 26, kicking off Chico Performances’ Dance Chico! week.

Do you enjoy being interviewed?

Do I like it? I neither like it nor dislike it. It’s one of those tasks that has somehow become part of my job that I accept because I’m going around doing events and doing

things like this dance show, and we need to let people know that it’s happening [laughs].

So we have to do press. But I don’t like it the same way I like doing interviews—like, I actively enjoy that.

Why did you choose dance? Why not a jazz ensemble or stage props?

[Laughs] I just want to say for the record, I am not ruling out a jazz ensemble or props. Basically, it was just the luck of seeing this particular dance troupe perform.

I saw them perform and I had this feeling I’ve never had watching dance, which is I felt like these people are trying to do exactly what I’m trying to do ... It has exactly the feeling I’m hoping our show has.

How did you come to create the show as it appears now?

The first thing I did is I organized a show that we did on stage in New York City, and there were cameras that beamed it to movie theaters all over the country.

And basically, it was an episode of our show with some of our regular people— like David Sedaris, Tig Notaro and David Rakoff—and then, as part of the show, there were these dancers. So that went great. And when that was done, we started looking for something else to do. And I suggested to them that I basically would go with them with their regular dance performance, and bring out public radio listeners, and I would introduce them and ask 10 minutes of questions at the end.

And we tried it once in New York City, and it was a big hit. But Monica had this feeling of, like, “I think people are coming

out to see you—because you’re betterknown—and it’s sad for them when you leave for the entire show.” [Laughs] And that just began this process of trying to figure out if you were to combine dance and radio, like, what would it be? Really, it’s an experiment.

Do you get the same visceral feeling as, say, a stand-up comic does when performing live?

I do. Yeah, yeah. That’s one of the nice things about it; it’s really different from being on the radio, which is a much more solitary experience.

Do you consider yourself more of a storyteller or a personality?

[Laughs] I consider myself neither—both of those seem like they’re for wankers. Being a storyteller seems like a wanker job, and being a personality doesn’t seem like something an adult does.

I consider myself a reporter, or a journalist. On the radio. With my own show.

Even radio host sounds a little weird, but at least it’s factual.

Do you think people get an accurate glimpse of who Ira Glass is when they listen to you on the radio?

I think they’re getting an accurate-ish glimpse. The person I am on the radio is way more interesting than the person I am in real life. Because the person I am on the radio has measured everything that he’s saying, and edited it for days before it ever gets heard by most people. [Laughs] You know, versus in real life where I’m constantly saying things I regret and things that are not as well-considered. Ω

For traditional music aficionados, this is a dizzying convergence of talents, and one that has its roots in the history of Western music as a whole.

For O’Brien, the meeting of his storied technical wizardry, songwriting and vocals—as typified by his run with pioneering progressive bluegrass crew Hot Rize, in which he manned guitar, fiddle, mandolin and banjo—and the ever-evolving influence of Lúnasa was a no-brainer.

“This is a great natural collaboration for me and for them,” O’Brien said during a recent interview. “It was really amazing how fast the music came together when we went to rehearsal.”

That could be because there are precedents with this particular collaboration. Lúnasa bassist Trevor Hutchinson appeared on O’Brien’s most recent solo album, the irreverent and sprawling Pompadour (2015), and Lúnasa piper Cillian Vallely previously toured with

O’Brien. Through these partnerships, the two entities determined that the symbiosis of their melodic and rhythmic heritages could expand into something new.

The Irish band released its self-titled debut in 1999 to much international fanfare for both its allegiances to and its development from traditional Irish and Celtic music, ordinarily more melody-based in its arrangements and improvisations than rhythm-driven American bluegrass.

“Lúnasa have kind of a jazz-bass sound, and then you’ve got this driving rhythm guitar that provides the thrust underneath the melodies,” O’Brien said. “That definitely makes them different than other Irish groups.

It’s a great little gig, because I’m learning and I think there’s something new happening.”

O’Brien’s work excavates and reinvents traditional music in many forms, reveling in turning a standard on its ear for the benefit of keeping it alive for another generation. There’s deep study involved here for O’Brien that comes with the territory as a songwriter, specifically when related to Irish music.

“So many people came from Ireland to the United States in the late 1840s,” O’Brien explained. “You have the old ballads and songs that people brought and they sort of stayed frozen in the Appalachian Mountains, where more archaic stuff survived longer because it was so isolated. That’s what bluegrass comes from, these old fiddle tunes and ballads combined with American influences and the African culture. They make bluegrass, they make rock ’n’ roll, they make jazz, they make country music. Whatever you call American music, it’s those things.”

O’Brien and Lúnasa are currently on the road together for the first time, and O’Brien remains optimistic that future recording collaborations could result from their suddenly much closer quarters.

“Things are starting to get more nailed down; there’s more improvising as we go,” O’Brien said. “It’s an easy-going kind of alchemy happening.” □

The two journeys are parallel as well as opposite, with the pair being linked most crucially by the presence of a shaman named Karamakate in both. The younger Karamakate (Nilbio Torres) is a heroic presence in 1909, a guide, adviser, healer and a vigorous defender of wilderness traditions. The older Karamakate (Antonio Bolívar) has lost touch with much of what he once was but is still heroic in his determination to join Evan in trying to recover secrets of the past, including his own.

The double incarnation of Karamakate sets up some intriguing and ironic contrasts with the “twin” explorer/scientists, with implications that are cultural, historical, political and (above all, I think) spiritual.

The parallel journeys set up a pungent commentary on the human cost of colonialism, and the intricate intertwining of those doubled characterizations produces layers of

The link between the colonialism and corrupt religiosity is made evident in appalling scenes at a ramshackle Catholic mission that both explorers have occasion to visit.

But the political and historical dimensions of this story are mainly powerful offshoots in a tale that scrambles narrative chronology on behalf of mythic poetry of a darkly enthralling sort.

David Gallego’s sensuous black and white cinematography is crucial to that poetry

Eddie the Eagle

A biopic chronicling the real-life story of Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, an amateur British skier who switched to ski jumping—a sport he had no experience with—in order to more easily qualify for the Olympics as the sole member of Great Britain’s ski-jump team at the 1988 games. Gods of Egypt

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

The story of The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the memoir by Kim Barker on which Whiskey Tango Foxtrot—a comedy/drama about a female reporter’s “strange days” as a war correspondent in the Middle East—is based, makes a very lively vehicle for its star, Tina

and to the film’s richly evocative sense of its jungle settings. Serpents are among the very first things we see in this movie, but the serpent of its title is a metaphor that alludes especially to “the river,” which in this case seems the source of vitality, magic, stories, spirit and much else.

Embrace of the Serpent is the work of Ciro Guerra. It’s his third feature film, and the first to get shown in U.S. theaters. His second film, The Wind Journeys, is available on video only, but it, too, strikes me as one of the masterpieces of recent world cinema. □

Fey. Barker was a print journalist working for a newspaper in Chicago; Fey’s Kim Baker is a writer for a second-level TV news outlet.

In the memoir and the film, Kim sees the Afghanistan assignment as a great career break, plunges into it all with surprising zeal, and then nearly flames out on three years’ worth of the adrenaline rushes that go with 24-hour cycles of risky behavior. There’s satire aplenty (with the military, the media, corrupt officials, male chauvinists and naïve careerists as special targets), but much of it gets soft-pedaled. By the finish, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot seems intent on retreating to the relatively safe territory of a mildly quirky romantic comedy. Cinemark 14 and Feather River Cinemas. Rated R —J.C.S.

But, it could be argued, creating and performing a cohesively evocative live musical accompaniment to such a silent visual narrative is an equally, if not more, impressive task.

Such a collaboration is certainly something you don’t see every day, so I felt extremely lucky to find myself cozily ensconced in the front row of the Pageant Theatre last Thursday night (March 10) for The Invincible Czars’ performance of a modern original soundtrack in sync with a showing of the nearly 100-year-old film. The Austin, Texas-based band features Josh Robins (electric guitar, percussion, samples/loops), Phil Davidson (violin, keyboard, glockenspiel), Leila Henley (bass clarinet, flute, vocals, percussion, synth), and Jeff

“The Jaguar” Grauzer (bass), and they brought a sumptuous blend of serious musicianship and goodhumored, top-hatted performance art to their “orchestra pit” in front of the Pageant screen.

After a melodramatic introduction of band and film by The Jaguar, the lights dimmed and the theater filled with pulsating electronic sounds, the rattling of dried bones and an ominous vocal chant.

Gradually, the initial sounds were supplemented with melodious violin, bass clarinet, shimmering guitar harmonics and the eerie chiming of the glockenspiel as the film’s title, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, played upon the screen.

Unlike typical silent-era movies shot mainly on sound stages resembling live theater settings, Nosferatu—which tells a slightly altered version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula—is brilliantly shot in many picturesque locations in Germany and Slovakia, giving the film a visual sense of authenticity that enhances the story.

The Czars’ genius manifests by combining modern as well as eraappropriate musical forms with the images being aurally illustrated.

Sprightly romantic piano and violin introduce young lovers Thomas Hutter and his wife, Ellen, who

must part when Thomas is sent by his boss to Transylvania to visit a new client named Count Orlok.

The journey to the count’s castle provides plenty of musical inspiration. The melancholic sweetness of intertwining pastoral themes flows with open guitar chords, sweet flute and violin lightening the countryside in Thomas’ departure, and syncopated “horsey” rhythms jog along with the carriage across the increasingly creepy landscape to the count’s castle.

The plot thickens when Thomas wakes in the castle with what he describes (in a letter to his wife) as twin “mosquito bites” on his neck, and Ellen awakens with a vision of the count threatening her husband.

Keeping with what has become a tradition in the band’s silent movie projects—adapting some appropriate classical music into the themes—the Czars, in this case, played Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances on piano, violin, guitar and spook-house electric organ.

The film’s tragic happy ending brings forth a musical crescendo of sadness and triumph that was echoed by the audience’s applause and hooting for this brilliantly realized wedding of contemporary musical sensibility and technology with early 20th century cinema. □

IN THE MIX The Bone Tree Greg Iles William Morrow The second volume in a trilogy about unsolved civilrights murders in the South, The Bone Tree follows Natchez Burning and precedes Unwritten Laws, which is due out this year. It’s centered around Penn Cage, a former prosecutor who is now mayor of Natchez, Miss. Members of his family figure prominently, especially his father, Dr. Tom Cage. Charged with murdering his former nurse, a black woman named Viola Turner, the doctor is now a fugitive from justice. Penn’s effort to save his father leads to the Double Eagles, a group of former Ku Klux Klanners who, in the 1960s, had gotten away with murdering black men in horrible ways, and who today will do anything—including murder—to avoid being brought to justice. Based loosely but recognizably on actual events and people, this prime example of Southern noir is, as one reviewer put it, “Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County for the Breaking Bad generation.” Best to read Natchez Burning first, however; both books are available at the Butte County Library in Chico.

Sugar Ponies is a self-described alt-folk/ country/pop/rock band from the Bay Area consisting of band leaders Suzanne Kramer and Michael McGovern, as well as a fine crew of backing players. Ta-Nehisi Coates is obsessed with bodies, namely the destruction of black ones in America. He sees former lovers, his wife, slaves and the innocents who’ve unjustly died at the hands authorities, as bodies. Coates’ own body is his savior. He says that one-third of his brain has been preoccupied with avoiding violence to his body since his childhood on the streets of Baltimore, and he understands how much more he could have accomplished with this lost part of his brain.

Howard University was “The Mecca” to Coates, where he first sees beyond “hues” and street names, and begins his search for answers in books. This is where he learns to love and to lose. Now a young father, Coates writes Between the World and Me as an extended letter to his 15-year-old son, Samori, whom he longs to prepare for, and protect from, a slanted society in which he must always remember to be “twice as good” as the man with paler skin standing next to him.

folks at the Maltese Bar & Tap Room are hosting the Peeps Diorama-Rama, on Sunday, March 20. It’s an open-entry competition for which, if I’m not mistaken, contestants must use tiny chicks and bunnies in the creation of a diorama. Arts DEVO is so down.

And I really want to win ($100 first prize!), so I have already started gathering materials for my scene. I’ve been laying traps near burrows and coops and harvesting my characters, drying pelts, tanning skins and hand-painting marble eyes. riP lisa Kelly I found out after deadline last week that longtime Chico radio DJ Lisa Kelly Higginson had died on March 8 after a six-month struggle with pancreatic cancer. She was 57.

On air she simply went by Lisa Kelly, and was a constant presence on local stations—from KFM to The Hippo—becoming one of the most recognizable personalities in local media during her more than 30 years here. No formal services are planned, but a sure-to-be-rocking celebration of life is in the works.

Material Knowledge I received lots of response from readers of the article a couple of weeks ago about a seller’s obligation to answer the lineup of grilling questions contained in the Transfer Disclosure Statement (TDS).

One woman said in a voice mail: “I sure wish the seller of our place had to fill out that disclosure statement. We were told the seller didn’t have to because he was selling his mother’s house for her estate after she passed away. Well, this guy left out all kinds of information about his mother’s house, like the funky septic system, and the roof that leaks in bad storms.”

It’s true: if a property is being sold as part of an estate, the seller, in this case the son of the deceased, is exempt from filling out and providing the buyer with the TDS. But one element of disclosure is never exempt.

It’s called “material knowledge” - knowledge that “may affect the value or desirability” of the property.

“Material knowledge” is an elusive and undefined thing, and can be a tough call for any seller in any situation.

For instance, if I were considering selling my house, and I happened to know at one time I had a serious rat problem, and I had privately wondered if perhaps those rats had chewed into the wiring, I would have to debate with myself whether or not that knowledge was something I should disclose.

However, if prior to selling I were to mention the rats and the wiring in public, there is probably no question I should disclose them.
