are briefly revealed, the candidates say solutions are “doing something much different.” Yet they don’t provide any details as to how they’re “going to build a great wall, eliminate welfare and Obamacare, lower taxes, increase military spending, reduce government spending, give everyone a free college education.”

Isn’t the American public smart enough to witness a real debate? Why not have military personnel talk about how best to deal with ISIS? Can we examine the true costs, both monetarily and in American lives? How long would we have to occupy these countries? Which ones? Can we afford it for the long term? And, please, remember those “boots on the ground” will be worn by our grandchildren, not disposable robots.

I realize there’s an overwhelming threat to world peace and something needs to be done. But I want to hear debates of the true experts, not evangelical preachers or secularists, not junior senators from Texas and Kentucky, and definitely not those adjusting their rhetoric in order to garner campaign donations. I want to see real professionals with the education and experience to analyze these issues.

Maybe then I can better decide how I should vote.

We claim to be an educated and enlightened country, but we sure don’t function like one. Ω

weekend in advance of the United Nations Climate Change Conference to send a message to representatives, including President Obama, that substantive agreements on curbing greenhouse gas emissions are expected out of this, the 21st such talks.

Here in Chico, about 250 activists took part in that historic movement, marching downtown and to City Plaza for a demonstration organized by Chico 350 (see photo on page 10). The group is an offshoot of 350.org, the international organization named for its goal of educating the public about the dire need to reduce the levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide to 350 parts per million from the current level of 400 ppm (see “Joining the fight,”

by Meredith J. Cooper, Nov. 19).

The climate talks commenced on Monday in Paris despite the terrorist attacks there, a testament to the importance of this gathering of world leaders from 196 countries. Every participating nation has a responsibility to curb the amount of CO2 that it emits into the atmosphere. This is a global problem. But the biggest polluters by far are China and the United States, and President Obama has pledged to make a commitment in spite of Republican opposition in the Senate that prevents the U.S. from coming away from Paris with a “legally binding” agreement.

Predictably, the GOP obstructionists in Washington, including local Congressman Doug LaMalfa, used the occasion to send a message to the president. The House voted on the second day of the talks to overturn the Obama administration’s new climate change regulations, including Environmental Protection Agency rules calling for a 32 percent reduction in CO2 emissions from power plants by 2030. Of course, the president has veto power, so the move was a symbolic gesture meant to embarrass the president on the world stage and also score points with the extremists within the Republican base.

But the world is increasingly sick of politicking taking precedence over finding solutions to our warming planet. Indeed, if anyone should be embarrassed this week, it’s those who would work to destroy policy aimed at dealing with the most important issue of our lifetime. A recent Gallup poll revealed that at least 70 percent of Americans believe in climate change. Moreover, a new New York Times/CBS poll indicates two-thirds want the United States to enter into a binding agreement to curb its growth.

It’s time for that majority to send a clear message to Congress by turning its anti-science members out of office. □

Good news, bad news After years of wrangling with a straitened budget, the city of Chico had

good news to share with the public on that front. During Tuesday’s regular City Council meeting, City Manager Mark Orme got up from his usual seat near the dais and stood at the podium to announce that the city will eliminate its general fund deficit by the end of this fiscal year.

Orme appeared excited to make the presentation in which he noted the sweeping layoffs that took place in 2012. He praised staff members and the panel for their efforts to manage the years-long financial quagmire. The cuts and an increase in general fund revenues due to a recovering economy have helped bring the books back to (nearly) black.

But Orme rightly urged caution. The bad news is there’s currently no emergency reserve, which means another downturn in the economy would threaten the city’s solvency. Recessions are cyclical, after all, and another one is predicted in 2018. Additionally, as we’ve learned through the dissolution of California redevelopment agencies, the state has a history of taking money from local governments.

City leaders must continue their cautiously optimistic stance and be prepared for another fiscal crisis. □

pontificating With a few exceptions, my family is pretty religious. Most of my relatives in Chico and the surrounding areas are Protestants who attend some sort of nondenominational church. There are a few outlier Catholics who live elsewhere. And then there’s me. I’m neither. I wouldn’t call myself godless, exactly. I just haven’t felt connected in a lasting way to a particular group.

And believe me, I’ve tried organized religion. During childhood I got a taste of a number of denominations: evangelical, Nazarene, Baptist. As an adult I checked out Presbyterianism, Catholicism and Anglicanism. That means I’ve been to the flag-waving rock ’n’ roll churches and also to the ritualistic congregations that actually feel like houses of God. The latter appeal to me more, but not enough to get me through the doors on Sunday.

Still, I’ve been a bit of a fangirl when it comes to Pope Francis since shortly after his election back in 2013. I’ve written about him a few times in this space, mostly in praise of him exhibiting what appears to me to be Christlike behavior. (It’s hard not to admire the teachings of Jesus.) The pope has, for instance, eschewed the comforts of the expansive apostolic apartments, opting to stay in his modest room at a Vatican residence. Additionally, he’s rumored to sneak out at night dressed as a priest to commune with the down and out.

And then there’s the release this past summer of his second encyclical, “Laudato Si’”—a treatise on the global community’s destruction of the environment and our responsibility to address such issues as climate change, the exploitation of natural resources and poverty.

I hope the local Catholic churches have taken note of these things, especially his call to save the planet. But, as is pointed out in this week’s cover story, the pontiff has no direct control over the warming of our world. Meanwhile, there are many other issues (the church’s archaic doctrine on birth control use, homosexuality and remarrying without annulment, for example) that he could address and hasn’t. The public may think of the pope as a rock star today, but how will he be viewed later if he remains on the wrong side of history?

In other news, this is the last month for CN&R’s fundraising push for our nonprofit investigative reporting endeavor. As I’ve mentioned before, all of the money that comes into the coffers by way of the North Valley Community Foundation will go exclusively to pay for reporting on critical community issues. None of it will go to this newspaper’s bottom line.

If we raise $25,000 by the end of December, an anonymous donor will pitch in an additional $10,000. But we’d need about $8,500 to meet that goal. I don’t like begging for money, but if the issues we’ve written about—homelessness, mental illness, climate change, government transparency, health care, civil rights, etc.— have touched you and you want to support in-depth reporting, please consider donating.

On homelessness Re “In from the cold” (Newslines, by Ken Smith, Nov. 25): Therapeutic incarceration is a term first applied by Social Services Review in 1996 to housing service providers in reference to their treatment of clients experiencing homelessness.

The essence of the research was that social service providers leveraged public sentiment toward homelessness into intervention-intensive programs.

Homeless individuals and families grasped onto these programs, often not entirely for the services, but as a vehicle to receive subsidized housing.

Homeless individuals often remained in the service-intensive programs longer than assumed due in large part to a shortage of subsidized housing.

The key for Chico always has been, and always will be, access to affordable housing for those experiencing extreme poverty. Housing options must be sufficient to accommodate folks living on Supplemental Security Income (SSI), down to folks with no immediate source of income.

We need to stop the ill-advised treatment of homelessness as a crime-laden illness, and focus instead on building the stock of desperately needed affordable housing. Nothing ends homelessness like a home.

Social welfare programs have been starved for decades. The wealth gap is wider than it’s been since the Gilded Age. The majority of Americans have no assets and twothirds can’t handle a $1,000 financial emergency. Homelessness is a highly visible manifestation of this social and economic failure.

In this context, local feel-good news stories highlight a few additional beds for the homeless. The Stairways program is a go-to example—and it’s even described as an “advocacy group.” In reality, Stairways is dependent upon Chico’s super-rich, who stridently support homeless criminalization—meaning real human beings actually go to Butte County Jail for the crime of sleeping outside; the crime of being among the hundreds for whom there is no bed at Stairways; the crime of remaining in Chico when the elites and their toadies say it’s time to go elsewhere.

Acid and climate change Re “Are you on acid?” (Letters, by Rick Clements, Nov. 25): Rick Clements of Paradise asks Melissa Daugherty if she is “on acid,” and then continues with a typically myopic rant against climate science, and the CN&R’s alleged “liberal bias.” Yawn.

May I suggest that if Clements sincerely believes climate science to be ridden with conspiracy and hoaxes, he address his next letter of condemnation to the following office: Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet, Ph.D. Oceanographer of the Navy Office of Naval Research Washington, D.C. One of the first lectures I attended during my 10 years of service at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography was delivered by the oceanographer of the Navy.

The conventional wisdom in the Pentagon is that the next great war of the 21st century [which we may already be engaged in] will be fought over issues directly related to climate change. Mr. Clements: Do yourself a favor and get an education.

I thought I’d ring in on the recent letter from Rick Clements, right-wing Paradise yahoo.

Clements wrote wondering if you were on acid when you asserted that the rise of ISIS was attributable to violence and poverty brought on by climate change.

Though that opinion was silly, Clements’ assumption that you were speaking for all Democrats was nearly as inane. Not all liberals are of the same stripe, nor are we all inclined to hold such sappy, soft-focus exculpatory views.

ISIS (or Daesh) was created by Bush, Cheney and the neocons when we invaded Iraq and turned out the Sunni generals and bureaucrats there. It has been fertilized with anti-Western hate, Saudi money and military equipment we left behind. The ISIS monsters are not rebelling, as Daugherty would have it, against poverty. Visit the ISIS home page, read their magazine, and they’ll tell you why they fight, how they were radicalized and where that radicalization occurred.

Unlike right-wingers, lefties disagree on stuff, and not all of us are inclined to see climatological excuses or uprisings against poverty as explanations for these barbarous religious zealots.

sleep. I love the new red meters. I think they’re great. I think it shows that we as a city have compassion for the truly homeless and mentally ill. Good for the city! Driving through a deserted downtown on Thanksgiving, you could not help but feel sorrow for the mentally ill lady sitting with all her belongings strewn out on the sidewalk at Fourth and Main. Almost every block you’d see another mentally ill person hanging out—those we need to take care of.

I’m not worried at all about filling the meter with my spare change and I know we have enough watchdogs to oversee that it is fairly distributed. I won’t contribute to the young bums or panhandlers who pass through harassing our townsfolk! I’m all for harassing them and moving them on—perhaps to Patrick Newman’s home. And furthermore, can’t you just start his own column? Pay him a little so he can feed more of his homeless friends.

Now, maybe my wife will let me sleep in this time.

Meter matters

Two views on Syria

Re “Charity transparency” (Editorial, Nov. 25): If the CN&R has not yet asked the city where money will be directed that is collected from the red parking meters, maybe that should be established first before publishing an editorial. Urging “citizens to refrain from making donations to the meters” is out of line. It is an individual’s prerogative if, where, when and how their donations are directed, and in my opinion the suggestion to “refrain from making donations to the meters,” as the editorial suggests, is uncalled for.

Plenty of controversy these days regarding whether or not the U.S. should accept refugees from Syria.

U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies have advised they lack, in many cases, the information necessary to properly vet each refugee. Hidden among them may very well be terrorists aligned with ISIS, intent upon doing serious harm to American citizens.

So, what is the best course of action, you ask?

Consider this: You have in your possession a bunch of 100 delicious grapes. Two grapes are deadly if eaten. Do you take a chance and feed the grapes to your family, hoping you can avoid the two deadly grapes? Or, do you reject the entire bunch?

Dare I say, it’s time to begin putting America (and all her families) first.

Did you know that the U.S. has been working to destabilize Syria since 2006? U.S. Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford urged Syrian dissidents to rebel. The rebels expected what the U.S. would do in Syria, and the violent regime change that has been so spectacularly unsuccessful in Libya. Unable to get United Nations approval, there was no legal basis for direct military overthrow, so the U.S. has had to rely on the CIA and proxies.

The lies about the Syrian conflict reek of pre-Iraq War. Bashar al-Assad’s barrel bombs, despite what those in government and the media say, are not responsible for most of the Syrian deaths. Artillery fired by all sides is responsible for most of the 250,000 deaths. And some 50,000 of those deaths have been Syrian government forces.

The U.S. bears great responsibility for the pain, death, destruction and refugees. There are already consequences.

A Red Bluff story Re “A Chico story” (Guest comment, by Donald Heinz, Nov. 26): I read with great empathy Donald Heinz’s guest comment about a woman thinking him homeless. That is, just for sitting in front of Safeway with wild hair, a beard and his dog while waiting for his wife to finish shopping. Only, my being mistaken for homeless wasn’t nearly so heartwarming.

My experience was in January 2011. I’d ridden my bike to Red Bluff to see my dentist. When I arrived, I found he’d relocated and his old office was now vacant.

Just as I discovered this a man emerged from an adjacent senior care center and told me to scram.

“Excuse me?” I inquired. He continued, “Go find somewhere

else to hang out! You’re not welcome here! I’ve called the cops! They’ll be here soon!”

From this I deduced attaching a milk crate to my bike rack to hold the clothing I stripped off on my long ride to Red Bluff might not have been such a good idea.

‘Change is … inevitable’ Re “Grieving for our planet” (Guest comment, by Patrick Newman, Nov. 19): I think one of the greatest mistakes of the enviro/climatechange group is using too short of a yardstick in judging the state of this precious planet we all live on.

The trends in one man’s life is a wholly inadequate and frequently misleading indicator of the longterm. In fact, we would be standing on a glacier today if the cuttingedge predictions in the 1970s of a coming ice age were accurate.

According to the evolutionists, tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, of species and subspecies have had their day in the sun and were discarded as their race had been run. I recently read an article that made a pretty good case for the human race surviving a warming trend far better than a cooling trend. As production changes (but not stops) in the middle latitudes, it likely will open up huge new areas of higher food production in northern/southern latitudes if warming comes true and we keep pace with the change.

Change is an inevitable part of life and warming may not be avoidable. This is not to say that we shouldn’t be good stewards of the planet. We are a wasteful and consuming species (as a whole) and I reject his characterization of other people’s political affiliations as the basis for the problems that we face.

When Paradise Police Officer Patrick Feaster shot the driver of a vehicle after it overturned on Pearson Road, it was by accident, according to preliminary findings of the Butte County Officer-Involved Shooting Task Force.

The incident occurred around midnight on Nov. 25, and was captured on Feaster’s dashcam video. Feaster followed an SUV as it sped away from the Canteena with no headlights on before crashing and overturning.

One of the occupants—Darien Ehorn, 23—was ejected from the vehicle and killed. The other, Andrew Thomas, 26, was climbing out of the SUV when Feaster shot him in the neck, according to a Butte County District Attorney’s Office press release.

Feaster reportedly drew his weapon believing Thomas was attempting escape.

Thomas remains hospitalized, with vehicular manslaughter charges pending.

Susanna Boxall, a Chico State philosophy and humanities lecturer, can’t start planning for next semester because she doesn’t know whether her classes will be canceled.

Chico Fire Chief Shane Lauderdale is resigning and taking a job with the North County Fire Authority in San Mateo County.

Lauderdale first served as chief in an interim capacity, replacing Keith Carter in April 2014. His leadership often drew praise. Chico City Council members credited his creative approach to community problems—a tight budget and a sweeping reorganization of the department, including the creation of a Community Risk Reduction Division.

In Lauderdale’s resignation letter to City Manager Mark Orme, he described the men and women in his department as “the most dedicated and proud fire service professionals you will find anywhere in the country.” His last day is Dec. 30.

After investigating the shooting last month of robbery suspect Eddie Gabriel Sanchez Jr., the Butte County Officer Involved Shooting/ Critical Incident Protocol Team has determined that Chico Police Det. Mark Bass was justified in his actions.

Sanchez, a known gang member from Paradise, had been fingered in a convenience store armed robbery Nov. 6 in which surveillance video clearly showed his face and a missing trigger finger, said District Attorney Mike Ramsey (pictured) during a presentation to the press by Tuesday (Dec. 1). A second suspect is still outstanding.

On Nov. 10, CPD officers began surveillance of the Pomona Avenue home where Sanchez was staying. According to Ramsey, Sanchez discovered Bass and partner David Bailey and, instead of getting to the ground as ordered, ran off and pulled out a handgun, pointing it toward the officers. Bass pulled his trigger, firing three shots and striking Sanchez twice in the head.

canceled. That’s bad news not only for students, but also for nontenured lecturers such as Boxall, who make up the majority of instructors on campus. Their jobs are most at risk.

“If my classes are cut, I could be looking at losing 50 percent of my income,” she said. “There’s a lot of uncertainty.”

Less than two months before the start of the spring semester, Boxall doesn’t know which classes to prepare for, or whether to start looking for another job. And she isn’t alone. “Everyone is puzzled,” she said. “I don’t think anyone expected [cuts] this late in the game, when schedules have been released and everyone is enrolled.”

The timing is more odd considering that, in June, Gov. Jerry Brown approved a state budget that includes an additional $97 million for the entire California State University system. “Nobody is giving us an explanation,” Boxall said. “How is it, with a budget increase, that there is no money for instruction?”

As it turns out, canceled classes are potentially just the tip of an iceberg. At an open forum on the Academic Affairs budget held Tuesday (Dec. 1) in Colusa Hall,

members of the Academic Senate reported that individual departments’ budgets are unexpectedly short many thousands of dollars. Take an example provided by Jennifer Meadows, chair of the Communication Design Department: “Personally, I’ve been asking the provost for months now, ‘When are we getting our budget? What can we expect?’ … I was told to expect it to be about the same.”

But as Meadows recently discovered, her department’s budget was cut by about $125,000 compared with the spring semester last year. That’s a big hit for a small department, she said.

“I have a lot of questions—questions I can’t get answers for.”

Despite the confusion among staff, Chico

State administration has remained silent.

No campus-wide announcements regarding the university’s financial situation have been released; students and teachers alike have been left in the dark. Interim Provost Susan Elrod, whose office produces the campus budget, did not respond to multiple interview requests for this story.

In an email sent to members of the

Pipeline payout Academic Senate on Monday, Elrod announced that she will deliver a presentation on the Academic Affairs budget at the senate’s regular meeting on Thursday, after CN&R’s deadline. The email noted that the new budget “distributed $5.1 million more in funding this year than last year’s allocations.”

That only fueled further questions at the forum on Tuesday. “Where is the extra $5 million?” asked Paula Selvester, former chair of the Academic Senate. “What was it allocated for?”

Evidently not Meriam Library. “You could say the forecast is rather dismal,” said Joe Crotts, department chair of the library. Based on the latest figures available, Crotts said, the library’s budget is well short of expectations, jeopardizing book and periodical collections as well as student assistant salaries.

Some might question the importance of book collections for an institution that already carries more than half a million books.

“New stuff, though, isn’t in those books,” Crotts emphasized. “New stuff is in new books. It’s the same thing with periodicals—we have databases and 30,000 periodicals. New, cutting-edge stuff in any field is in the new issues, not the old ones.

“We have a nice repository, but if we don’t keep it updated, gaps occur, and once gaps occur it’s real hard to go back and fill them.”

And since the library’s staff is already short, it relies on about 50 student assistants to stay open, especially during evenings and weekends, Crotts said. Now, it appears there isn’t enough money to retain the majority of those students. “The student assistant budget is going to be severely compromised,” he said. As a result, it’s likely the library will drastically reduce operating hours next semester.

For dedicated educators like Boxall, the cuts are a troubling reflection of the university’s values. She can see defunding instruction only as a disservice to students. Class offerings are already slim—Boxall’s philosophy classes invariably have a waiting list at least 15 students long at the start of each semester—which is problematic for seniors who need to take major-specific, irregularly offered classes in order to graduate.

“It’s not just about making my life harder, that I need to figure out how to get my income back to normal,” Boxall said. “It means students aren’t getting the classes they need.” □

Park Commission accepts PG&E deal to pay for new street trees

G&E will be cutting down 52 trees along Comanche Creek as part of its Pipeline Pathways project, but the felling could result in as many as 156 new street trees in the community.

The fate of the trees, which are located on eight separate private properties on the city’s southern end, was effectively sealed at the most recent Bidwell Park and Playground Commission meeting (Nov. 16). The panel voted to accept a compromise brokered among the city, the power giant and green watchdog group Butte Environmental Council. PG&E offered the city $20,000 to plant a street tree for each one removed from the project area, as well as provide three years of watering and maintenance. The company has also offered the property owners two new trees for each removed, with the option to plant them on their property or instead donate money for two additional trees to the city. So, in total, there could be three trees planted for every one removed.

Though the plan is still awaiting final approval from the City Council to accept the funds, PG&E spokesman Jeff Smith said that the check has already been mailed. He also said the company is in communication with seven of the eight property owners, but it’s too early to tell how many more of those trees will end up along city streets.

Smith said that PG&E has no legal obligation to replace the trees: “The trees we’re clearing are actually exempt from any city tree ordinance or other law, but we recognize the value that the community places on them and wanted to respect that,” he said.

The utility company’s Pipeline Pathways project is an effort to remove trees, vegetation and structures along 6,750 miles of natural gas pipelines throughout the state. It started after a 2010 gas line explosion killed eight people in San Bruno, though tree advocates throughout the state have argued trees didn’t play a role in that explosion. Smith noted the goal is to allow better access to safety workers in the event of an accident.

Earlier this year, PG&E suffered a public relations nightmare in Oroville, where the company removed 243 trees. Many were cut down before the public was aware it was happening. The last few to fall included a number of ancient sycamores outside the Oroville Cemetery, and their removal prompted protests, a stand-off and law-

enforcement intervention.

“We hate to see any trees cut down, and also don’t believe that saplings and baby trees can adequately replace some of the larger trees we’re losing, but it’s a compromise,” BEC Executive Director Robyn DiFalco said of the Chico agreement. “For that, we applaud PG&E’s effort.”

DiFalco said BEC began talks with PG&E early this year to ensure a tree-by-tree review of those scheduled for removal in Chico, greater public involvement in the process and appropriate compensation if the trees are removed. The review resulted in the reduction of trees slated for removal, from 86 to 52.

Still on PG&E’s pipeline chopping block are 33 trees south of Chico along the Midway, on county property. Smith said PG&E is still working with BEC on those trees, and hopes to have a plan to present to the Butte County Board of Supervisors by January.

“It will closely resemble the Chico plan,” Smith said.

The Pipeline Pathways project isn’t the only threat to Chico’s urban

forest, the status of which has been murky since the departure of Urban Forest Manager Denice Britton and the downsizing of the city tree crew in early 2013. Britton had been working on a draft Urban Forest Management Plan to better manage, maintain and protect the local canopy, but that plan remains in limbo.

According to the city’s most recent Sustainability Indicators Report published last May, the number of street trees planted by city staff has been greatly reduced while removals have risen dramatically in recent years. In 2014, 209 trees were removed, while America loosens the belt only 14 were planted.

t their meeting Tuesday, Dec. 1, Chico City Council members voted to ban couches on front porches, approve solar power at the golf course, support a crackdown on speeders in the Canyon Oaks subdivision, recommit themselves to following the Ralph M. Brown Act, and take action against proposed local water rate hikes.

They also approved a budget modification that nearly eliminates the city’s general fund deficit.

All this in an hour and a half— “a record” for brevity, as Mayor Mark Sorensen said. Here’s a rundown: Burning couches: The council unanimously approved an ordinance banning front-porch couches at the behest of the Chico Fire Department. Last year the department responded to 124 fires set in stuffed furniture or mattresses dragged into the street, reported Division Chief Bill Hack. Such “reckless” fires are dangerous

because of the potent toxins produced when they are burned.

For many of these items, their penultimate location is a front porch, which is why the ordinance targets furniture that is visible and accessible from the street. Most such fires occur in the student neighborhoods, Hack noted.

Steve Depa, representing the North Valley Property Owners Association, said the city needed to establish a collection method for the furniture similar to the “dropand-dash” event that provides a way for college students to get rid of unwanted furniture.

Hack said his department first would focus on education to make sure residents know about the new ordinance. Citations will be issued only after citizens have been warned that they are in violation.

Solar at the golf course: Bidwell Park Golf Course wants to install a 2,500-square-foot solar array on-site and needed coun-

cil approval to do so. The array, which would be used to power irrigation pumps, would generate approximately $1.8 million in energy savings over 25 years from an initial investment of $390,000.

There would be no cost to the city.

A concerned Councilwoman Ann Schwab pointed out that the staff report said the array “would not be seen from the main road in Bidwell Park,” an inadequate criterion, in her view. She noted that a similar criterion was used to allow houses on the park’s south rim that can be seen from several other vantage points.

Rod Metzler, representing Empire Golf, which manages the course, said the site of the array is an untended area about 30 feet lower than its surroundings. “It can’t be seen from anywhere,” he said.

The panel approved the array 4-2, with Schwab and Councilwoman Tami Ritter dissenting and Councilman Andrew Coolidge recusing himself. “This is all going too fast,” Schwab said.

Water party: California Water Service Co. is seeking California Public Utilities Commission approval of a plan to merge its Northern California clients into a single “northern region.” City Attorney Vince Ewing is worried, and not just about rate hikes of 20 percent or more. He’s concerned the company wants to use revenue generated in Chico to pay for infrastructure improvements in other communities, such as Willows.

Ewing asked the council to approve a motion making it a “party of interest” in the proceedings before the CPUC. The council voted unanimously to do so, but also to have Ewing explore other possible ways to intervene.

Canyon speeders: It seems some residents of the gated Canyon Oaks subdivision are taking advantage of the fact that its private streets aren’t patrolled.

They’re speeding and running stop signs, said Darren Bevan, an attorney representing the association.

“We’re very good with controlling landscaping and paint colors, but not with law enforcement,” he acknowledged.

The council voted unanimously to support the association’s plan to contract with the CHP to patrol the neighborhood.

“We’ll behave”: In response to a cease-and-desist letter from local activist Jessica Allen (see “Taking the council to task,” Downstroke, Nov. 26), council members unanimously agreed to follow their attorney’s advice and “unconditionally commit” themselves to the Ralph M. Brown Act, while not agreeing with Allen’s charge that they violated it on several occasions.

Budget nearly balanced: In the feel-good news of the day, City Manager Mark Orme said that, thanks to prudent practices, the city now could afford to transfer nearly $4 million from the general fund to its deficit fund, thereby bringing the deficit to just $518,716.

And, because the council earlier approved a budget that included an additional $900,000 transfer, the deficit—once in the millions of dollars—will be erased by the end of the 2015-16 fiscal year. He warned, though, that the city still had no reserves and needed to continue being fiscally conservative.

How college students are resisting mental illness stigma by

heavy baggage—bipolar disorder and an eating disorder. Dragged down by severe depression, she barely made it through her first two years at American University in Washington, D.C. “I didn’t go to classes a lot. I didn’t get out of bed,” recalls Davis, now 22. “After freshman year, I got into an abusive relationship. I was drinking heavily, frequently.” When she felt hopeless, she would tell herself that she would one day be better and try to prevent what happened to her from happening to others.

That she has.

Davis went on to serve as president of her university’s chapter of Active Minds, a national mental health advocacy organization. Davis also organized mental health events and programs for her campus’ wellness center.

Davis is among the hundreds of college students who no longer care to hide their mental illness—or be judged by it. Student advocates are passionate about decreas-

ing stigma and expanding campus mental health services. They are pushing college administrators to create more equitable mental health leave policies and are demanding clearer rules for readmission.

These advocates are driven by the fact that about 20 percent of 15- to 24-yearolds’ deaths each year are suicides. They are emboldened by celebrity mental health disclosures and the LGBT movement’s civil rights successes. They have the confidence to come out, organize and advocate for themselves in large numbers.

These students are emboldened by their sheer numbers. In the 2014 National Survey of College Counseling Centers, 86 percent of center directors at 274 institutions reported a steady increase in students arriving on campus already on psychiatric medication.

UCLA’s 2015 American Freshman Survey polled more than 150,000 incoming freshmen at 227 four-year American colleges and universities. Of those, 10 percent reported feeling “frequently” depressed, more than 3 percentage points higher than five years ago.

Several college mental health psychologists say the fact that more teens with mental illness are attending college is partly due to

advances in mental health care. “We have students who 20 years ago wouldn’t have been in higher ed,” says Chris Brownson, director of the Counseling and Mental Health Center at the University of Texas at Austin. “Now, due to earlier treatment, better treatment, many are functioning better and can be wildly successful.”

The increased demand for mental health care has, however, overtaxed many college health centers, resulting in waits as long as three weeks for initial appointments. This discourages some students from seeking help, says Davis. She and other student advocates want colleges and universities to increase counseling staff and add more options, like peer-to-peer counseling.

Young advocates will tell you that stigma

is still prevalent and that disclosure takes courage. But talking about mental illness is the best way to reduce prejudice and ignorance, says Ameera Ladak, a senior at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She finds a huge disconnect between the overall student body and those with a mental illness.

“Most students don’t even know the anti-

stigma effort exists,” she says. “At campus mental wellness events, people rarely approach [our] booth. They don’t want to be seen as crazy. That’s the main challenge facing us right now.”

Davis spoke out about her eating and mood disorders to help others and found that in doing so, she freed herself. “As I started opening up about my struggles, I realized there were other people with similar experiences, waiting for someone else to bring it up” she says. “The quality of my relationships was transformed, even with acquaintances, because I no longer felt I had something to hide or to be ashamed of.”

Revealing your most private, painful moments can be scary but liberating.

Sixteen years old and newly diagnosed, Sarah Berendt isolated herself, but as college approached, the teen threw off her shame and self-loathing. “I realized it wasn’t fair that I had labeled myself as crazy. I knew I had potential to do something worthwhile, which allowed me to feel more comfortable telling friends.”

She confided to her freshman roommate at Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio. “It was the most awkward conversation I’ve ever had,” Berendt recalls. “I told her that I was on medication for a condition called bipolar disorder. She was not entirely comHEALTHLINES C O N T I N U E D

Four years later, the once withdrawn Berendt leads a support group at the local National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), a grassroots mental illness advocacy organization, and is president of her university’s Active Minds chapter. She was instrumental in relocating the campus mental health center to a less conspicuous location to encourage more students to seek treatment. A 2012 NAMI study found that 50 percent of surveyed students who dropped out of college for mental health reasons had never sought counseling.

Students say they are drawn to organizations like these out of a hunger for community and a desire to help their peers find mental health care. The students get to write chapter bylaws, fund-raise, and hold events—like De-stress festivals and Defeat Depression runs. At Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Madison, New Jersey, campus, students paraded a banner with 1,000 handprints that read: “1,000 Students Die From Suicide Each Year.” Student mental health groups also invite to campus guest speakers with mental illness who lead successful lives and run mov-

A new Active Minds program, Transform Your Campus, gives students tools to shape policy. For instance, students at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, created a mental health curriculum for freshmen and collaborated with college administrators to print a 24-hour crisis number on all student ID cards.

Recent college graduate Kelly Davis is using all she learned as a student mental health advocate in her new job as a policy and programming associate at Mental Health America, a national nonprofit dedicated to increasing mental wellness. She is confident the college student mental health movement will continue to expand both in numbers and influence.

“What it’s really about is looking at mental health as part of the larger campus culture,” Davis says.

“We’re investing so much in universities, they need to invest in us as well.” □

WEEKLY DOSE Beat the winter blues It’s natural to feel a little low during the colder, darker months of the year. While nearly 10 million Americans suffer from clinically diagnosed seasonal affective disorder, many more experience a milder version of depression, often referred to as the winter blues. Luckily, there are some ways to avoid feeling blue this winter: • Brighten your environment.

Some people go so far as to get a dawn simulator for their bedroom, which gradually turns on the lights to make getting out of bed when it’s still dark out a little easier.

• Exercise. A Harvard University study found that walking for 35 minutes five days a week or one hour three times a week can improve symptoms of depression.

• Volunteer. Helping others has been proven to brighten people’s moods.

My sons are thrilled by it. My younger son is a lawyer with an interest in environmental issues … so this is very much on his radar.

I find in general that people younger than 20 years old, everyone wants to say they don’t care about climate change, but I don’t find that to be the case.

The Moms Clean Air Force is a community of mothers and fathers working to tackle air pollution and climate change in order to protect children and the planet we’re leaving them. The organization is connecting the dots between air pollution, climate change, an imperiled food system, toxic products and the well-being of kids, and encouraging parents to learn and take action.

Led by co-founder (and mom) Dominique Browning, 59, the organization now has more than 570,000 parents involved, and is working at both the national and state level to organize parents to push for air pollution regulation and climate change action.

Browning and I had a phone chat this week about the group’s work, what her sons think about their mom yelling at politicians, and getting celebrities to join the cause.

How long has the Moms Clean Air Force been around and what do you all do?

We’ve been around 3 1/2 years. We’re over half a million parents around the country demanding clean air on behalf of our children, to protect children’s health.

We’re trying to protect health regulations and health laws. And we also work on the ground in 20 states doing the same thing.

I see you’ve been a writer and editor for some time.

What made you want to get involved in clean air and children’s health issues?

I’m obsessed with climate change. As a magazine editor for all of my life, I was struck by how much the conversations about climate change were directed at people in the know, instead of people like me who want to know more and understand but couldn’t understand it. I wanted to change the conversation from polar bears to people, reaching out to people like me to see what we can do to make a difference, and communicate how urgent this problem is.

For example, when I first got started, while I knew some things about mercury, like don’t eat tuna sandwiches when you’re pregnant, I had never understood it was an air pollution problem from coal-fired power plants. All of this is interrelated, so we want to talk about climate change as a clean air issue.

Parents are busy people. Knowing this, how do you get them get involved?

I call it “naptime activism” for parents that might be too busy. It takes maybe 10

minutes to sign a petition, or read, or send something off to a senator. Some of these things don’t take a lot of time, and your voice as a citizen does matter.

And lots of parents, including me, are starting to think, “What are we leaving behind for our children?”

With so many things to worry about when it comes to children, how do you make clean air a top priority for parents?

For one thing, I’m not really fighting against anybody’s idea of what’s most important. When you look at the polls, climate change ranks way down there on people’s concerns, and I understand, we have to pay our mortgage, work at our jobs. I’m not saying you should put climate change at the top of your list.

But I am saying recognize it’s an important part of your everyday life, by letting people know there’s a health connection, asthma connection, a food-you’re-eating connection, and to be aware of it. And there are solutions.

That brings me to my next question. What is it that you all are advocating for? What’s the goal?

Well, first off, we are nonpartisan. The only place we see solutions coming from are the EPA [Environmental Protection Agency].

We are supporting EPA rules that are strong and good, such as the regulation of methane emissions from new sources, and we’re pushing for regulations for existing sources.

In terms of renewables, a lot of that is state-level work, supporting the Clean Power

Some celebrities have signed on to the Moms Clean Air Force. Were any of these a particularly big deal to you?

I’d say the biggest deal was getting Julianne Moore on board. She was a friend of a friend of a friend, and it took like five phone calls, but she’s really passionate about mercury and clean air.

I wish more voices like hers would jump in on climate issues. □

Superelf to save the day Everyone loves a superhero— Spiderman, Superman, Wonder Woman—and each year during the holidays, Chico gets a superhero of its very own: Superelf. The colorful elf (aka nurserywoman Rebecca Yarrow) appears each year at The Plant Barn garden center and gift shop (406 Entler Ave.), where she greets, assists and cheers up customers while dressed in a wild elf uniform that includes bells, lights, purple tights and a cape with a giant Superman-like “S” on the back. This year, as Yarrow is no longer employed at The Plant Barn, Superelf will make special appearances during the season, including during the nursery’s holiday celebration on Dec. 12.

How did you get your start here?

As an elf in the North Pole I was never very good at building toys, but I was great at making people smile and laugh. So [several] years ago, Santa talked with The Plant Barn’s owner, Denise Kelly, and sent me here to lift people’s spirits. I did such a good job that he kept assigning me here.

What are your super powers?

Filling people with joy, even if they feel down. One little girl came in here crying. She had an elf-like hat on and I pointed to it and said, “Look, you’re one of us!” Then I gave her a Christmas wand and she

got really happy. Another time I put the magic back [into] an Elf on the Shelf. They’re little elf dolls that sit in a home and report behavior to Santa. But they lose their magic if touched. Someone had touched it and the family’s little daughter was sad, so I did an elf blessing and got his magic back. Superheroes love to save the day!

What’s your most interesting encounter as Superelf?

What’s your job exactly?

How do you get back to the North Pole?

I welcome people, make them laugh and help them find the best plants and gifts for their garden and home. I have a specially decorated chair for pictures with people, and I’m also really good at wrapping poinsettias.

I was driving to a car-repair shop and a policeman kept following me. When I stopped at the light, I was really nervous, but in my mirror I saw the officer give me the thumbs-up. When I got to the shop, he said, “You made my day. You’re beautiful.”

When I saw the large piece of white paper in the window at the downtown Chico Starbucks a few weeks back, I ran through the crosswalk, thinking my eyes were deceiving me. There’s no way that could be what I think it is, I thought. But there in black and white, it was confirmed: Our downtown Starbucks is looking to serve beer and wine.

Back in August, Starbucks announced that it was beginning to pilot Starbucks Evenings in select in cities around the U.S. The idea was to begin serving craft beer, wine and small plates in Starbucks coffee shops in these pilot cities, which were mostly major metropolitan areas like Denver, Miami, Los Angeles and Brooklyn.

I read the news articles thinking it would take years for the concept to trickle down to a small Northern California city like Chico. But, as that public announcement in the window made known, our downtown Starbucks is currently in the alcohol licensing phase, which would pave the way for Starbucks Evenings to be offered at 246 Broadway. A sample menu listed on the company website includes truffle mac and cheese, bacon-wrapped dates, truffle popcorn and about 10 wines, with representation from California, Oregon and Washington, in addition to foreign brands.

The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has the license listed as “pending,” with no timeline for when it may be approved. A call to Starbucks media relations and return email from “Starbucks Press” noted that implementing Starbucks Evenings is “a long and thoughtful process and the permit filing is just one of many steps we take.”

In the meantime, if you want to see what the future could hold, the nearest Starbucks locations that offer Starbucks Evenings are in Roseville (on Foothill Boulevard and East Roseville Parkway) and Sacramento (on Greenhaven Drive). Looking at the company’s website, if the alcohol license goes through for Chico, as of now, it would be the northernmost California city to offer Starbucks Evenings.

wo hundred seventy bishops from 120 countries issued a disheartening report after a recent three-week Vatican synod discussing family matters for the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics.

Marianne Duddy-Burke, executive director of DignityUSA, called the document “deeply disappointing,” one that blocked “civil and moral equality for our community.” That community: an organization of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Catholics.

A Vatican official, fired recently after admitting publicly that he was gay and in a relationship, sent an angry letter to Pope Francis. The official, the Rev. Krzysztof Charamsa, wrote that Francis was making the lives of gay and transgender people a hell. He added that the church is persecuting gay Catholics, causing them and their families immeasurable suffering.

Many conservative bishops at the synod said that those who remarry without getting an annulment are adulterers living in sin. They said the church cannot change its doctrine that marriage is indissoluble.

But some bishops called that “insensitive, even cruel, because it refuses to take personal circumstances into account.”

No wonder The New York Times called it “the most contentious and momentous meeting of bishops in the 50 years since Vatican II.” The synod exposed deep fault lines between traditionalists wanting to shore up doctrines and those who want the church to be more open to Catholics who are divorced, gay and single parents.

Pope Francis, papal rock star, has won worldwide praise for being a nice guy. But that is hardly praiseworthy. The sad truth is that the pope has changed none of the musty doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church.

Francis made a temporary absolution for Catholics “who bear in their heart the scar” of abortion and repent during the upcoming Jubilee or Holy Year.

Katie Klabusich, in a Truthout news analysis, countered that 95 percent of Catholics who have had abortions have neither struggled over nor regretted their abortions. It is not the “existential or moral ordeal” characterized by the pope.

“I grew up Catholic and attended a Jesuit university,” said Erin Matson, co-director of the reproductive justice organization ReproAction.

“The official teachings of the Catholic Church on sexuality, including but not limited to abortion, harm people around the world,” she pointed out. “The views of the Vatican are deeply out of step with the views of Catholics. Women who have had abortions have done nothing wrong. They have nothing to apologize for.

Pope Francis is not changing any doctrine on abortion.”

The Rev. Harry Knox, president of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, is blunt: Francis starts off with compassion “but quickly turns to more shame for women.”

“Women have abortions for many reasons,” he noted. “What a woman really needs from her clergy is someone ready and able to have deep pastoral conversations about the decision.”

One in three Catholic women have had one or more abortions. Catholic women oppose criminalizing abortion by a margin of 2-1. This is the reality of Catholic women’s lives, not some obsolete papal decree.

Still more reactionaryism: The church is woefully short of priests but will not allow women into the priesthood. It deems women unequal to men. Sister Louise Akers, head of the Sisters of Charity, rightly calls the Catholic Church “the last bastion of sexism.”

And still more backwardness: the church insists that priests be celibate. Celibacy is unnatural. At least some priestly pedophilia can probably be attributed to celibacy. The church doesn’t allow divorced Catholics to take communion. It should. Communion is central to Catholicism.

And still more backward doctrines: The church prohibits the use of condoms even to prevent HIV and AIDS—a clear example of head-in-the-sand dogma.

The church opposes premarital sex, a view contrary to human nature, and therefore practiced by most Catholics.

And still more dithering: The streamlined annulment procedure recently unveiled by the pope supposedly simplifies the arduous gauntlet of red tape. A worthwhile outcome is dubious.

Annulment proceedings can take a year or more and cost upward of $1,000 in “bribes” to annulling bishops.

Francis asks that annulments be granted free. Asking is not promulgating.

The church needs genuine reform, not cosmetics and pretty talk.

Pope Francis recently canonized Junipero Serra, founder of Spanish missions in California. He called Serra “a friend of humanity.” Keener judgment would call him unworthy of sainthood.

The mission’s main purpose was to convert the “heathen” Indians to Catholicism. Indigenous Americans rightly denounce Serra for trying to destroy their culture.

His missionaries sought to convert Indians to Christianity. Serra required Indians to learn Spanish.

He advocated using whips to lash those who spoke the native language and followed native culture. Indians were forced to labor under brutal and sometimes fatal conditions.

Sainthood should not be bestowed on someone who forces conversion at the end of a whip.

Panel praises pope Pope Francis in his homilies, press conferences, interviews and offhand remarks to visitors has impressed observers worldwide by his humility, friendliness and earthiness.

Typical comments by all-faiths panelists published recently in the Reno Gazette-Journal: “a witness to the world”; “a visible role model”; “an inspiration”; “fountain of grace”; “uplifts the very soul”; “lover of all mankind”; “a Christ-like pope.”

Such extensive praise disturbs Harvey Cox, a Harvard divinity professor. He fears a “cult of personality,” making the pope less effective.

Kenneth Lucey, philosophy and religion professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, was the only RGJ panelist who dissented from the adulation. He rightly urged the ordination of women. But Lucey should have gone further, urging Francis to abolish the dogmas against abortion, birth control, homosexuality, gay marriage, divorce, transgenders and married priests.

Oh, the pope utters fine Biblical lines like “judge not that ye be not judged.” But he refuses to go to the root of the problem for most worldwide Catholics.

Until he approves those essential changes, Francis remains mired in the past. All the encomiums heaped on him by leaders of all religious faiths will not hide the bleaker truths.

The headline over comments by the faith panelists proclaimed, “Can Pope Francis change the world?” That is a terrible cliché as well as being terribly untrue. Lucey conceded in his panel segment that the pope “could change the world by altering the rules of the church.”

But making Catholic women priests will hardly “change the world.” Nor will married Catholic priests.

As for the pope’s marvelous appeal for social justice and rightful denunciation of the “tyranny of capitalism,” its “trickle-down theory,” its “free market” and his rightful urging of climate control, those are matters that he can do nothing about.

Conservative editors of Time proclaimed Francis “person of the year” for 2013. Citations by magazine editors: “The People’s Pope … He prays constantly, even while waiting for the dentist … He has retired the papal Mercedes for a scuffed-up Ford Focus … No red shoes, no gilded cross … General aura of merriment not usually associated with princes of the church.”

The men and women of the year should do greater things than just being popular.

Sainthood and bad popes The Catholic Church and the saint business can be unholy. Bad popes are often canonized for no other reason than that they have been pontiffs. Such is the case of the recent bestowal of sainthood on a bad pope: John Paul II. Maureen Dowd, columnist for The New York Times, is a Catholic yet rough on the Vatican and popes like John Paul. nearly three decades of the gruesome pedophilia scandal.

• Another cloud over his papacy was “the shame of giving sanctuary to Cardinal Bernard Law, a horrendous enabler of child abuse, who resigned in disgrace as archbishop of Boston.”

• An unforgivable papal breach was his “stubborn defense of the dastardly Mexican priest, Marcial Maciel Degollado, a pedophile, womanizer, embezzler and drug addict. He ran his order, the Legionaries of Christ, like an ATM and a cult for himself and the Vatican for 65 years.” He was probably the worst sexual predator in Catholic history.

• The church is giving its biggest honor to the man “who could have fixed the spreading stain and did nothing. It is wounding and ugly when the church signals to those thousands of betrayed and damaged victims that they are a mere fading asterisk.”

But, alas, Ms. Dowd tells only half of John Paul’s misdeeds. Michael Gallagher, Truthout columnist, tells the other half. He writes: • “John Paul, in his eagerness to gain America’s material support in liberating his native Poland, had no qualms about selling Latin America down the river.”

• He condemned Liberation Theology, acclaimed by Latin American bishops, for its key tenet: “the preferential option for the poor.” Latin American Catholics, using the teachings of Jesus, wanted to liberate the poor from unjust economic, political and social conditions. It was nothing less than “an interpretation of Christian faith through the poor’s suffering and struggle.” Nevertheless, John Paul dismissed Liberation Theology as Marxist-inspired. (There is more Marx in Jesus than Christians admit.)

• John Paul made one of his favorites, the pedophile monk Hans Groër, archbishop of Vienna.

• After John Paul’s long-delayed response to pedophilia, he wallowed in self-pity (“that this should fall upon me in my old age”).

• He refused to attend the funeral of the martyred Archbishop Romero in 1980, “giving the green light to the murderous Salvadoran junta eager to get rid of pious meddlers.” The situation has echoes of the murder in Canterbury Cathedral of Archbishop Becket in 1170 by four knights in the entourage of King Henry II. The king is said to have asked: “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?” The knights did. The Salvadoran junta in 1980 sent a death squad to rape and kill two Maryknoll nuns and an American missionary in El Salvador. In 1981 the junta dispatched an elite military unit, trained at Fort Benning, Ga., to murder six Jesuits on the faculty of the Central American University at San Salvador, El Salvador.

• The papal nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Pio Laghi, with John Paul’s approval, “functioned as President Reagan’s go-between with the Contra terrorists in Nicaragua whose favorite victims were doctors, nurses, literacy workers and campesino coffee workers.”

After devastating a bad pope and horrible saint, columnist Dowd extols a good pope worthy of sainthood: John XXIII. The saintly John XXIII convened the historic Vatican II aggiornamento, “a bringing up to date,” an open window on the Catholic Church. He embraced Jews and opened a conversation on birth control.

John XXIII, the good, was made a saint the same day as John Paul, the bad. It was one more example of cynical Vatican machinations, a subterfuge unworthy of Pope Francis.

• In her autobiography, The Long Loneliness, published in 1952, she spoke of concern for the unfortunate, her fight for women’s suffrage, socialism, the Industrial Workers of the World and becoming a Catholic.

• Day was a Christian through and through. In the Worker for November 1936, she wrote: “Christ did not need pomp and circumstance to prove Himself the Son of God. … If Our Lord were alive today, he would say, as He said to St. Peter, ‘Put up thy sword’ … Prince of Peace, Christ our King, Christ our brother and Christ the Son of Man.” Day started and led a lay movement that operated without authorization of the Catholic Church. The Worker took and still takes positions far ahead of the Vatican, most newspapers and television. She prophetically anticipated themes of Vatican II: ecumenism, liturgical renewal, religious freedom, the right of conscience and opposition to racism and anti-Semitism.

She denounced war. She was jailed for protesting Civil Defense drills. She called preparation for nuclear war blasphemy.

As a teenager, she was an avid reader of such writers as Upton Sinclair, Jack London, Charles Darwin, Aldous Huxley, Kropotkin, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Gorky. So it is no surprise that in the Worker of May 1951, Day wrote that Marx, Lenin and Mao Tse-tung were animated by brotherhood.

In 1917, she was arrested for picketing the White House on behalf of women’s suffrage. She backed the suffragette Silent Sentinels organized by Alice Paul. The cost: 15 days in jail, 10 of them on a hunger strike.

As a journalist in 1933, Day covered the Hunger March of the Unemployed Councils for Commonweal magazine and the Farmers’ Conference for America magazine in Washington, D.C. Above all, she fought for the poor, for justice and for humanity.

Dorothy Day should clearly be made a saint. It remains to be seen if the rock star pope has the stones to enable her canonization. Ω

Justin Townes Earle Earle began writing songs as a teenperforms tonight, ager growing up fast in East Nashville.

The first of his two latest albums—released www.sierranevada.com four months apart—is titled Single Mothers, and is a tribute to Hunter. But the title cut, like many of Earle’s songs, shouldn’t be taken literally.

“There’s some autobiographical content in there,” he said.

“But they’re not 100 percent based on my experience. I like to base my songs on feeling. I write a hard beginning, middle and end. You’re writing something in shorthand, in the most condensed way you can. I would only reach 1 percent of people if I wrote, ‘I got sad and shot dope.’ If I write, ‘I got sad,’ people can relate.”

“Shooting dope” is a reference to Earle’s well-documented history of drug and alcohol abuse that began when he was 12 years old—“Have baggage, will travel,” he quipped. But the 33-year-old has been clean for more than two years, after a relapse that ended eight years of sobriety.

Single Mothers was released in September 2014, and its companion release, Absent Fathers, followed it in January.

“They were recorded at the exact same time in the same recording session,” Earle said. “We did 22 songs in 10 days. We didn’t overdub my vocals or guitar. We let the guitar player go in and do some solos.”

The new band that Earle recorded with includes Paul Niehaus of Calexico and Lambchop on guitar and pedal steel, and drummer Matt Pence and bassist Mark Hedman from the folk band Centro-Matic.

nitely have not been touched by the Nashville sound. I literally remember when I was 17 years old I wanted to play with Paul Niehaus and wanted to make a record with Centro-Matic,” he said. “I kind of got there.”

The two albums represent yet another change in Earle’s sound, which has moved from the folk and old-time blues of his early work through the gospel-tinged country of 2010’s Harlem River Blues, to his current Memphis-blues leanings.

“I have a severe lack of patience,” Earle said of his musical changes. “I’m probably the ADD poster child for America.

There’s so much music I’ve been exposed to, being from the Southeast.

“With the exception of hip-hop, every single form of American popular music has come from the Southeast,” he added. “I’d love to make a traditional jazz record someday. But I’ll have to become a much better guitar player to do that.”

The band is still on the road supporting Single Mothers and Absent Fathers, and Earle says playing with a group has altered his performance style.

“I’m playing guitar completely differently,” he said. “The claw hammer banjo thing does not work with this band.

We were looking at Booker T. and the M.G.’s. ... Paul will answer me and I’ll answer him and we’ll get something going together.”

In addition to the musical changes, Earle admits that his process of songwriting has become more deliberate and intense.

“I was a cocktail-napkin writer,” he said. “I just scribbled down lines whenever I could. That’s because I was constantly moving. My first couple records, I was doing 200 shows a year. I’ve become a desk writer now. … Now I take a lot more time with P\ VRQJV ,µP PRUH RI D SDWLHQW VRQJZULWHU ³ Ɛ

Historical perspective aside, what gives The King and I its long-lasting and nearly universal appeal is that it is essentially a love story about a classically mismatched couple who, through often adversarial experiences, learn to appreciate and respect each other as unique individuals.

Directed by Daun Weiss, the Chico Theater Company’s lavishly staged and costumed production highlights all of its cultural and historical subtext without shirking a bit of its requisite exotic costumery, pageantry or wit. Anna (the perfectly cast and voiced Jenise Coon) is a young widow, who, with her son Louis (Kylie-Ann Humble), travels to Siam to take up the task of modernizing the many children and bevy of wives of the King (played by Theo Bill) by teaching them English manners and speech in order to impress visiting British emissary Sir Edward Ramsay (Nick Anderson).

The brilliance and wit of Hammerstein’s script and lyrics are as easily appreciated today as during the musical’s debut in 1951, and the loveliness of Rodgers’ lush melodies for the play’s big “hits”— “Hello, Young Lovers,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune”— make the songs timelessly appealing, at least for those for whom sentiment is not a derisive term.

The set, by designers/painters Amber Miller and Christopher Burkhardt, is at once minimalistic

and exotically picturesque, with subtle lighting changes that bring out varying hues of lavender, deep green and yellow in the painted jungle backdrop depending on the emotional tone of the scene. And the scenes vary greatly, between the charming “March of the Royal Siamese Children” (as the King’s many offspring are presented to their new teacher in the royal chambers) and the wonderfully choreographed (by Sheree Henning) “The Small House of Uncle Thomas.” The latter is presented as a play-within-a-play adaptation of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s antislavery classic, presented in mockOriental opera style by the King’s latest concubine, Tuptim (Yuka Noguchi), who, with her secret lover, Lun Tha (Bryce Zubiate), provides a diametric foil to the incipient and unacknowledgeable love of Anna and the King.

With a sumptuously costumed cast of 24, plus well-conceived and -executed choreography, beautiful songs, witty dialogue and a richly orchestrated (prerecorded) soundtrack, The King and I delivers everything one could hope for— save live musicians—in a musical theater production. And it also delivers an enjoyable explication of the cultural differences resonating between Eastern and Western culture in the Victorian and post-WWII eras as well as our own, all within the pretext of exploring the problematic nature of romantic love.

It’s an exploration worthy of the trip. □

ty; as a portrait of a kind of collective identity crisis in a major American city, it is incisive by and very moving.

Juan-Carlos Writer-director Tom McCarthy Selznick (and co-writer Josh Singer) have taken on a hugely dramatic subject— investigative reporters for the Boston Globe exposing the massive, systemic coverup of sex abuse in Boston’s Catholic churches—and presented Spotlight it in terms that are brashly realistic Starring Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, and compelling while also remaining Rachel McAdams averse to cheap-shot sentiments. and Liev Schreiber.

The film’s title refers to the Directed by Tom Globe’s Spotlight unit, a group of McCarthy. Cinemark 14. Rated R. four reporters devoted to long-term investigative journalism. In the film, that group is played by Mark Ruffalo (as Mike Rezendes), Michael Keaton (as Editor Walter “Robby” Robinson), Rachel McAdams (as Sacha Pfeiffer) and Brian d’Arcy James (as Matt Carroll).

Liev Schreiber (as publisher Marty Baron) and John Slattery (as Managing Editor Ben Bradlee Jr.) are key figures in the action as well.

Those six are the face of the film—six deftly sketched, workaday varieties of moral and journalistic dedication. Ruffalo’s dogged intensity, Keaton’s haunted ambiguity and Schreiber’s fierce calm produce some individual standout moments, but Spotlight is an ensemble effort in all respects.

Some of the best acting in the film comes in the secondary and cameo roles. Stanley Tucci is excellent as Mitchell Garabedian, a tired-looking lawyer for

abuse victims who is nevertheless heroic in his relentlessness. Billy Crudup is very smooth as lawyer Eric MacLeish, a seemingly unflappable facilitator of the coverups. Neal Huff is very good as a much-ignored victims’ advocate, and so is Richard O’Rourke as a prim little priest who freely admits his transgressions but insists they were victimless acts. □

In Brooklyn, Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) comes of age just

in time to find herself on the horns of a remarkable dilemma. No sooner has she emigrated from Ireland to the U.S. and started a new life of her own there than she’s called back to Ireland (for the funeral of an older sister who has died young) and begins discovering an alternative “new life” where there was none before.

Her dilemma is magnified by the fact of having a very attractive suitor in both places—a wildly devoted working-class Italian American named Tony (Emory Cohen) in Brooklyn and a gentlemanly middle-class lad named Jim (Domhnall Gleeson) in Ireland. But romance is just one aspect in the drama of cultural dynamics that must play out in her emerging sense of selfhood.

Nick Hornby, a novelist and screenwriter who also excels in adapting other writers’ books (An Education, Wild), has adapted Colm Tóibín’s novel and fashioned a comedy/drama that scores points as a coming-of-age tale, as a culture-clash sketch, and as a richly contextualized love story. And director John Crowley presents it all with brisk sensitivity.

There’s also a fine, deep supporting cast. Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters are the veteran presences, but Crowley and cinematographer Yves Bélanger render the entire cast as a gallery of beguiling everyday faces. □

Trumbo

Dalton Trumbo (1905-1976) was an Oscar-winning screenwriter in Hollywood in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. He is best known, however, as the most flamboyant figure in the “Hollywood Ten,” the group of screenwriters who were jailed and blacklisted for their various refusals to cooperate with the McCarthy-era House Un-American Activities Committee. Trumbo, written by John McNamara and directed by Jay Roach, is a combination biopic and history lesson, a period piece that recounts events from the time of HUAC, the Hollywood blacklist and its aftermath. The film portrays Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) as a kind of genteel rebel, a family man much invested in the good life, California-style, but also a social activist who truly has the courage of his political and moral convictions. McNamara’s script touches on a variety of dramatic hotspots in this bit of American cultural history, but the finished film is, for the most part, little more than a diverting set of sketches. This somewhat lighthearted version of the story reaches a conventionally satisfying conclusion, but its sharpest energies reside almost exclusively in Cranston’s Trumbo and in a wildly uneven array of cameos/caricatures —J.C.S.

So, on a recent weekday evening, I invited three of my girlfriends out to the new restaurant, which recently took over the space previously occupied by Johnnie’s in the Hotel Diamond, for cocktails, food and to catch story and up on our lives. Only one of them photo by Meredith J. had been there before, and she Cooper immediately said, “I already know I like their Old Fashioneds!” She’s mered i thc @ particular about her liquor, so if a newsrev iew.c om cocktail passed the test, we knew we were off to a good start. ★★★ Kelly and I arrived first and took a seat. Perusing the specialty drink Two Twenty menu, I wasn’t sure whether to be Restaurant 220 W. Fourth St. grateful or insulted at the fact that it 895-1515 includes a glossary. Actually, I take www.twotwenty that back—while I’m familiar with restaurant.com sherry, vermouth and bitters, I had no Open for breakfast idea what aperol was before reading Mon.-Fri., 7-10 a.m. and Sat.-Sun., 8 a.m.- the description: “An Italian aperitif 2 p.m., and for dinner made of bitter orange, gentian, Tues.-Thurs., rhubarb, and cinchona among other 2:20-10 p.m. and ingredients.” OK, I still don’t know Fri.-Sat., 2:20-11 p.m. what it is. But let’s move on.

I opted for a glass of cabernet, which I sipped as we chatted and looked over the rest of the menu. The ★★★★★ EPIC small plates at Two Twenty are all over the place, and in lesser hands ★★★★ AUTHORITATIVE than those of head chef Michael Iles— formerly of Sierra Nevada Brewing ★★★ APPEALING Co.’s Restaurant & Taproom, Frenchtrained and highly experienced—I ★★ might’ve worried that it would be a HAS MOMENTS little unwieldy. But there are some ★ tantalizing-sounding choices.

“I don’t know what I want to try more, the coconut prawns or the smashed potatoes,” Kelly said. I agreed they both sounded good, though I was unsure of the inclusion of Sriracha pork belly croutons with the spuds. Having heard early on that the chicken and waffle was one of Two Twenty’s signature large plates, I’d already set my heart on it.

Upon her arrival, our friend Wendy immediately ordered the coconut prawns, which made Kelly’s decision simple. Jackie announced she was on a “liquid diet” and ordered wine.

The ambiance of the place is much the same as it was as Johnnie’s. Upscale, but with a remodel that’s modernized the furniture and overall feel. Our seats in the lounge were comfortable, though we chose a table with backless bar chairs, so there was nowhere to put our jackets and purses. The low noise level made conversation easy, as did a few drinks, and service was friendly and prompt.

When our food arrived, we were eager to dig in.

Jackie even buckled and requested an extra plate so we could all share. The prawns ($12) were a good size, breaded and served with a sweet chili sauce and wasabi custard, which was not at all overly spicy.

The chicken and waffle ($20) was served with a “citra-hopped hot sauce” and jalapeno jelly, alongside a cute jar filled with black-eyed peas. The chicken was nicely breaded and perfectly fried, although a bit bland all by itself. When eaten in the same bite with a piece of pecan waffle smothered in a sweet butter and some of the jalapeno jelly, however, it was quite good.

It seemed strange that there was no syrup, but the butter brought enough sweetness to the dish.

The real star of the night was the smashed potatoes ($11), with the pork belly, roasted peppers, sour cream and charred green onions. The potatoes were good, but the pork belly … I have never tasted anything quite so rich and melt-in-your-mouth awesome.

In the end, we all enjoyed the food, drinks and ambiance, which combined made for the perfect girls’ night out. Next time I’m trying the beer-cheese burger. □

IN THE MIX Journey Blind Magic Circle 20 buck Spin There’s been no shortage of bands aping black-lit doom in recent years, but Boston five-piece Magic Circle manages to hit all the classic heavy metal sweet spots without overstaying its welcome. The band’s second full-length, Journey Blind, is a slab of classic-sounding metal that doesn’t just tap into listeners’ nostalgia; it also sounds goddamn good. There are hooks and riffs aplenty throughout the record’s seven cuts, ranging from glacial slag to lightning-quick gallops, most notably on “Ghosts of the Southern Front.” Vocalist Brendan Radigan’s mighty wail falls somewhere between Ozzy and Dio, cutting through the heaviness like a rusty blade. If you like your metal a little more visceral than cerebral, then Journey Blind is one hell of a ride.

Besides, who wants to do a buncha thinking when you’re banging that head that doesn’t bang?

In 2004, when he was 30, the author was a rising star in Missouri politics, narrowly losing a Democratic primary election to replace the retiring House minority leader, Dick Gephardt. Five years later, then a state senator, Smith lied to the FBI about a minor malfeasance in his 2004 campaign, was found guilty of obstruction of justice and was sentenced to a year in a federal prison.

He was a unique inmate, not only because he was a middle-class white guy with a Ph.D.—the most useless degree imaginable in a prison context—but also because he was only 5 feet 7 inches and weighed just 125 pounds. Mr. Smith Goes to Prison is a survival story, a male version of Orange Is the New Black rich in fascinating characters and telling incidents. It’s also a devastating critique of the American prison system written from an inside perspective. It would make a worthy—and highly readable—companion volume to Just Mercy, this year’s local Book in Common, whose author, Bryan Stevenson, will be in Chico this spring.

With a quick sprint, you push into the dense undergrowth of Endor, an Ewok scurrying into a tree far above. A battalion of Stormtroopers haphazardly fires in the distance—the pew pew pew feeding the adrenaline of combat and the rush of childhood nostalgia. Star Wars Battlefront, an EA reboot of the popular first-personshooter series (LucasArts, 2004-09), delivers the epic feel of a galaxy far, far away in every detail. Beautiful landscapes across diverse maps, character models and sound design—from iconic music to the hum of a passing TIE Fighter—immerse you in the Star Wars universe, making it one of the best Star Wars games in recent years.

Unfortunately, it’s not a great video game. There’s no campaign, the multiplayer unlocks are slow and unintriguing, and character customization is almost nonexistent. The repetitiveness of infantry combat takes its toll, but the Force is strong and Jedi and Sith alike will relish the fanboy/fangirl experience—even if it’s a glorified version of Disneyland’s Star Tours.

HoliDay music We’re all a bunch of singing fools in Chico! It’s ridiculous how

much holiday music is being created locally, and it’s seriously gotten me in the spirit of gathering ’round tables and bar stools with friends and family and singing in the season.

The annual Glorious sounds of the season put on by Chico state’s school of the arts (Dec. 4-6) is always one of the best musical programs of the year.

All of the Music Department’s student and faculty players— from the wind and string ensembles to the Jazz X-press band and professor emeritus david Rothe playing the giant Centennial organ—bring their powers to the eclectic show, which is presented in kaleidoscopic fashion, with performances popping up in all John Klezmer sings “Holidays Are Here Again.” areas of Harlen adams Theatre.

a way of getting the answer ‘yes’ without having asked any clear question,” wrote French author Albert Camus. I have rarely seen you better poised than you are now to embody and capitalize on this definition of “charm,” Aries. That’s good news, right?

Well, mostly. But there are two caveats.

Sellers who keep their homes on the market are saying, “We’re serious about selling, or we would have pulled out for the holidays.” Buyers who are still out looking at homes are saying, “We could put this off for the holidays, but we’re serious about buying now.” The expected interest rate hike from the Fed could also be a motivator for buyers to get their shopping done.

When serious buyers and sellers find each other, they usually put together a good deal for both.

Hand in hand with the good time in the real estate market this time of year is the good time for the retail shopping season for bigticket household items like refrigerators, stoves and washers and dryers. The big-box stores always stick with tradition and put up the great deals starting in November.

The way I hear it, all those big-screen TVs will be broadcasting big discounts; the ones that generally cost upwards of $2,000 will go on sale for under $800 and plenty available under $600. Check out the deals on all the hand-held gizmos, too.
