bec at 40 Congratulations to the Butte Environmental Council, which last Saturday,

Oct. 24, celebrated its 40th anniversary with a sold-out gala at the Sierra Nevada Big Room.

As several speakers noted, it’s rare for a local nonprofit to survive that long, especially one that passionately advocates for protecting nature and the environment. But BEC now has more than 900 members and has become a respected educational and advocacy group.

Begun in 1975 as a collective of five environmental groups that came together to streamline and coordinate their work, BEC quickly asserted itself. One of its first accomplishments was its successful advocacy for creation of the Ishi Wilderness Area encompassing Mill and Deer creeks.

Perhaps best known for its sponsorship of the annual Endangered Species Faire, which it started in 1979, BEC has been a leader in educational programs such as Recycling and Rubbish Education (RARE), which visits county schools to teach about the importance of not wasting resources.

The group also sponsors hands-on programs such as the annual Bidwell Park and Chico Creeks Cleanup and an Oak Restoration Program that plants and tends young oaks in Upper Bidwell Park. It also oversees two large and bounteous community gardens, one on Humboldt Road at El Monte, the other at the corner of Oak Way and Highway 32.

Perhaps BEC’s most important function, however, is advocacy. It has never been afraid to take a stand on a controversial issue, whether it’s an environmentally harmful development project, threats to local water or Chico’s Greenline, or violations of the city or county general plan. It is our most important environmental watchdog. Even those who don’t always agree with BEC must acknowledge that Butte County is a better place because of its work.

women, children, senior citizens, those with a mental health diagnosis, veterans, people with substancedependence problems or a felony, youths in foster care, and Native- and African-Americans.

California ranks with the deep South and Texas on its failure to have a statewide policy to address and prevent homelessness. Locally, ticketing bodies with backpacks and squalling about poop on your shoes is not a policy solution for homelessness. Chico fails to provide enough affordable housing. Section 8 is a bingo game with a three- to five-year wait. The Jesus Center and Torres Community Shelter don’t solve their clients’ substance-dependence problems.

If council members don’t want to unlock public bathrooms, they could at least provide human waste bags like the dogs get in Bidwell Park. Maybe they could provide storage lockers so people wouldn’t have to drag all their stuff with them to avoid losing limited personal belongings. Or just maybe they could stop being reactionaries and actually display some intelligence and vision to formulate a plan to address adequate, affordable housing options that reduce homelessness. Google Finland. That country formulated a national homeless policy in 1989 that concentrates on housing first and social services second. It has reduced homelessness by 50 percent.

The best world record yet. □

Meat is dangerous? Duh! The World Health Organization’s revelation that eating red and processed

meats results in a higher likelihood of cancer is no revelation, except perhaps to those who’ve been living in a cave for the past decade or so.

There have been countless studies linking meat consumption to increased risks of several types of cancer, especially of the colon. W.H.O.’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), its research arm that announced the findings on Monday (Oct. 26), evaluated the carcinogenicity of both types of meats in its review. The takeaway is that processed meats, including every carnivore’s favorite salty meat, bacon, cause colon cancer and likely other forms of the disease. Additionally, red meat likely causes colorectal cancer, and maybe other types as well, such as prostate and pancreatic cancer.

The good news for meat lovers is that the risks remain small when meat is eaten in moderation. That’s why the director of IARC recommends limiting one’s intake.

Reducing the chances of a cancer diagnosis is a pretty good incentive for curbing meat consumption. But there are other reasons to cut down on or eliminate meat from one’s diet. Perhaps the most important is that it is a key factor in our warming world. That’s according to a nearly decade-old report by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, which revealed that the food we consume—primarily meat through its production—releases more greenhouse gases than that spewed from our vehicles or from industrial operations.

Yet, here we are nearly a decade on, and meat is still on tables daily around the world. Let’s start cutting back—it will not only aid our bodies, but also will help the planet. □

More compassion In the coming months, or sooner, Chico’s City Council is going to discuss whether its new anti-homeless ordinance should be expanded throughout the entire city. That is, should the police be given carte blanche to harass those without homes irrespective of the public property they happen to be standing or, in some cases, sleeping upon.

I choose the word harass purposely, since it’s the term Mayor Mark Sorensen used back in September when discussing the merits of the so-called Offenses Against Waterways and Public Property ordinance. Among other things, it makes it easier for police to ticket (and thus, eventually, arrest and take to jail) people who live along Chico’s creeks or at the Civic Center—the new name for the properties housing City Hall, City Council chambers and City Plaza.

The mayor believes Chico’s a huge magnet for homeless people.

He and some of his colleagues make it sound like this is the only city in America with such a population. I guess they haven’t been to Redding or Sacramento lately or, as some readers have pointed out, realize that much smaller Oroville is home to a much larger homeless population. A simple Google search reveals that cities throughout the United States are grappling with worse issues when it comes to homelessness.

“We’ve developed the reputation that, ‘Oh, you can go there and they’ll give you everything you need, and the police don’t even harass you,’” Sorensen lamented.

Openly pushing for city-sanctioned police harassment is a new one, but this council never ceases to amaze me. Sorensen and five of his council colleagues—everyone except Councilwoman Tami Ritter—took the path of least resistance by voting in favor of that law.

It goes into effect next week.

One proponent of expanding Chico’s new law is Michael Madieros, who’s featured this week in our cover story by CN&R staffer Howard Hardee. I respect the work Madieros does at Stairways Programming to help people get off the streets, especially considering the nonprofit employs the Housing First model. But I disagree about the need for a citywide ordinance. Violating people’s civil rights is not an appropriate tool to getting them help. The ends do not justify the means.

What we need here is more compassion, along with more resources and, obviously, city leaders with more vision when it comes to truly addressing homelessness.

In other news, last weekend my family finalized our adoption of Monroe (formerly named Syrio), a handsome roughly 8-month-old German shepherd mix. We took him in through a foster-to-adopt program of the Greater California German Shepherd Rescue earlier this month.

The day after Monroe came to our house, he accompanied us on the second annual Buddy Walk at Bidwell Park. The next week, he tagged along during Chico Beer Week’s kick-off event, Brewfork. He’s spent many an afternoon sleeping at my feet in my office. In other words, he’s home.

Banner banter Re “Banner years” (Newsline, by Robert Speer, Oct. 22): Once extreme right-wingers got control of the Chico City Council, it was inevitable that military banners would be given a Dr. Strangelove salute. Other lucky redneck towns have enjoyed this blight for years.

But, it’s not too late for Chico Military Heroes to change course. At a recent council meeting, I suggested that these durable vinyl banners would make nice tarps for the homeless and thus might better honor those who defend our country. The banners could be redesigned and distributed free of charge.

Since the City Council has further trashed the Fourth and Eighth amendments—with its recent homeless criminalization/incarceration ordinance—the banners might carry the text of the Bill of Rights.

The banners could also detail some of the factors driving homelessness: child abuse/abandonment, mental illness, brain injuries, physical disability, addiction, etc. (Along with “free choice to sleep in the rain,” for the 1 percent that fall in this category.)

Perhaps, if the homeless carried these banner-tarps through the coming El Nino winter, they might help remind us of our core constitutional values and serve to educate us as to the array of calamities leading to life on the streets—in this, the richest country in the world.

I read the article and wondered why the City Council would approve a project that privileges a small group of our military heroes while ignoring the vast majority. Are not all military veterans as important as those currently serving? After all, many of them gave the greatest sacrifice of all or came back suffering for the rest of their lives from wounds, amputations, PTSD, sexual assault, etc.

What of those who experienced the hell of war only to take their own life?

Or now work hard for peace? If I were a parent or was one of them I would want myself or my family member in the community’s conscience just as much as those currently serving.

I’m curious. How much does it cost to make each of the banners?

I’m a veteran and I feel this banner project is missing the point. I’m sure that the individuals championing this project have the best of intentions, but wouldn’t it be a more appropriate display of honor to donate the funds collected for the banner project to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Disabled American Veterans?

I’m sure our men and women in uniform past and present would agree.

Restoration play The Rover is way off the mark. Behn was not a “proto-feminist.” She was a royalist and admirer of Charles II and was in favor of the Restoration.

She liked kings. She had had quite enough of Puritan England and its social experimentation, as had many others (Cromwell’s body was dug up, put on trial, found guilty and hung and beheaded—a display of Restoration wit). Behn would take umbrage at being labeled a feminist.

At the time, cavalier playwrights would not accept pay since it was beneath their social standing at court and would place them in the crass commercial class. Behn was broke, however—so she wrote commercial tripe for money; she did not break any new ground.

It’s disingenuous that modern day feminists appropriate singular women of historical note and then claim them as one of their own.

‘Off the mark’ Re “Gender rolling” (Scene, by Carey Wilson, Oct. 22): The review of Aphra Behn’s

Being black in Chico A panel of four Chico State students shared their experiences being African-American in Chico in a Black Lives Matter workshop this month. All of them have suffered the indignity of walking down the street in a mostly white college town to be assaulted by racist slurs and commands to go back to the jungle. Cans have been thrown at them from passing vehicles displaying Confederate flags.

Even more offensive is what happens on a campus that says it values diversity. Teachers and students also look to the black

student in class to speak for all people of color. Many classes require group work; the students said they’re the last to be chosen simply because of their skin color.

Once in a group, the others don’t want to meet at the black student’s house. That not only hurts, but also impacts their academic success.

The students were frustrated that racism continues unabated just disguised in different language. A political science major who grew up in “the hood” in Los Angeles said, “There’s a negative stigma about being black and it has an effect on me.” A black woman on the panel said she worries about getting a call that something harmful happened to her brother and her partner. Time to discuss how to end racism in our community.

Too many babies A Web page that puts world population growth in alarming perspective is the U.S. and World Population Clock. It features “odometers” for both the U.S. and world populations running in real time. The U.S. odometer showing one birth every eight seconds is alarming. The world meter’s running so screaming fast it’s terrifying—like watching water rise around you aboard a sinking ship.

Also alarming are the population listings of the 10 most populous countries. I thought the United States had too many people.

India—a country that geographically is about twice the size of Alaska, has almost four times our population. China—the world’s most populous country—has over four times our population.

The Butte County Library will move to selfservice checkout and some other automation, according to a plan approved Tuesday (Oct. 27) by the Board of Supervisors.

The Chico, Gridley, Oroville and Paradise branches will integrate fully automated self-service technology over the next year, with all branches adding radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to library materials. The Chico branch—the busiest—also will automate sorting.

The supervisors unanimously approved spending $653,248 for the upgrade, with $330,000 of those funds a gift from the estate of the late Martha Dunbar, who was a regular patron of the Chico branch.

The board also approved no-cost plans to add two hours weekly at the Gridley, Oroville and Paradise branches, but balked at spending $47,344 to add five hours in Chico.

Spooked in Chico

A local woman has been arrested for theft from an elder by a caretaker for allegedly stealing a collection of gold and silver coins valued at $170,000.

In June, an 89-year-old Chico man reported the coins missing to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies discovered that caretaker Rebecca Partsch, 56, had suddenly stopped providing care for the man’s dying wife, according to a BSCO press release. The man, whose identity has been withheld, discovered the coins missing shortly thereafter.

On Oct. 22, sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant at Partsch’s house in Red Bluff, where they found 15 1-ounce gold coins and 857 1-ounce silver coins valued at a total of $31,131. She was booked into Butte County Jail with bail set at $50,000.

MURDER CASE REVIVED

The case of Steven Edward Crittenden, a former Chico State student sentenced to death in 1989 for the double-murder of Dr. William and Katherine Chiapella, has new life.

In January 1987, the couple were found dead in their home on Downing Avenue; they’d been bound, gagged and bludgeoned, as well as stabbed multiple times. Gerald Flanagan, the Butte County deputy district attorney who prosecuted the case, dismissed the lone black person in the jury pool because she opposed the death penalty. Subsequently, an all-white jury found Crittenden (pictured) guilty of murder and kidnapping. He was sentenced to death.

In October 2013, a federal judge ordered a new trial for Crittenden, now 48, ruling that racism was a “substantial” factor in the black juror’s dismissal. On Monday, Oct. 26, a federal appellate panel upheld that decision, according to online court records, ordering Butte County to retry Crittenden.

These are just a few a mini tour based on the haunting of Riley of the ghost stories that Strahl. Live music, haunt us here in Chico, belly dancing and other entertainment. and they represent

a small sample of the tales Jodi Foster has been listening to for the past four years, since she published her first book, Forgotten Burial. That told the story of Foster’s own haunting by the ghost of a woman she believes was kidnapped and murdered nearly 40 years ago by Cameron Hooker, known for keeping a girl as a sex slave under his bed in Red Bluff for seven years. The body of Marie Elizabeth Spannhake, who last lived in the north Chico apartment where Foster was haunted, has never been found.

“For the past few years, since the book came out, people have contacted me and I’ve accumulated a pile of stories about Chico,” Foster said during a recent interview. For those who believe in psychics and mediums, Foster is considered a “sensitive,” which means she can sense—and sometimes see—things from the spiritual world. “What’s been really interesting is people who didn’t know each other but lived [or worked] in the same place had similar haunted stories.”

For the past four years, Foster has been compiling those stories and researching some for possible inclusion in a second book, this one about Chico hauntings. The research has been grueling, she said. “I’d start with old title searches, and then when I had some names I’d bring them over to

Special Collections [at Meriam Library] and look for coroner’s inquests.” From there, she could search old newspapers for stories about the events and piece the mystery together. “It’s time-consuming, but I think it’s fun—it’s like finding hidden treasure.”

In addition to a book, Foster is also taking the stories she’s uncovered and turning them into what she hopes will become a series of Haunted Chico tours. She’s already launched a website (hauntedchico .com) and a Facebook group (facebook .com/historichauntedchico) that, as of press time, had more than 1,700 members. On Halloween, she and her cohorts—there are about 10 people in all working on the project—will hold their launch party at 1078 Gallery. There, she’ll tell the story of Riley Strahl’s demise, complete with her take on why his spirit might be restless.

So, what did happen with Riley Strahl?

What led him to be poisoned? According to Foster, back in the early 1880s, Strahl was a teamster in Butte County who worked the lumber flumes. Around the same time, a young woman by the name of Molly White moved to Chico to live with her aunt and start a life for herself. Times were hard, and shortly after getting a job as a “waiter girl” in a restaurant in the

“Riley Strahl was one of Molly’s special customers,” Foster said, “and he fell in love with Molly.”

Apparently she returned that love and resolved to quit the life of prostitution and return to “civilized” society.

So, she went to the local Methodist church, where the women embraced her desire to reform. When Strahl proposed marriage, White agreed and a date was set for July 1883. A wedding was planned, but at the last second, Strahl sent word that he was stuck at work, so it was postponed. That was the first time White was jilted, and after the second, she vowed it would not happen again.

“By the third time, Molly realized that Riley probably wasn’t going to show up,” Foster said. “A few days before the wedding date, Riley was in town and Molly invited him to her new residence at Fourth and Flume.”

White had been living at a boarding house owned by the Goddard family, Foster said, and she and Strahl sat on the front porch and talked into the wee morning hours. They shared a flask of pink wine. Around 1:30 a.m., Strahl began screaming in pain and shortly thereafter collapsed in the foyer, dead from being poisoned.

Did White poison Strahl or was it somebody else? Could it have been an accident? In the interest of not spoiling a great local mystery, the CN&R’s account will end here. Rest assured, Foster delves deep into the coroner’s inquest, which included testimony from White and other witnesses. The church ladies come back into the picture; there’s the strange disappearance of Strahl’s stomach contents; and a verdict that’s perplexing indeed.

Strahl’s body is buried at the Chico Cemetery. Foster speculates that one of the reasons for his spirit’s unrest could be the fact that his headstone is missing.

A visit confirmed the lack of a marker, though Clark Masters, who leads historical tours of the cemetery, said that given the fact that Strahl is buried with no family, he wouldn’t be surprised if he never had a headstone at all.

“I’m not here to convince people of spooks,” Foster said. “These are more than just ghost stories—they’re memories, they’re the folklore of our city.

And they’re a cool way to get people interested in this really rich wild west history we have here.” □

Jesus Center names new chief s a 20-year-old undergraduate volunteering at the Berkeley Emergency Food Project in the 1980s, Laura Cootsona had an Aepiphany that helped shape the direction of her life.

“I hung out at the drop-in center a lot, got to know people, helped write résumés and anything else I could do,” Cootsona said during a recent interview, before assuming her new role as executive director of the Jesus Center this week. “I loved the people and the work, but I was pretty naive and not super useful.”

Cootsona’s moment of clarity came after accepting an invitation to join that organization’s board of directors: “From that vantage point I could think strategy and look at the larger issues. It was a real turning point in realizing what role I’m best suited to fill. I wasn’t meant to be a social worker, but my gifts were more along the lines of strategy, bridge-building and fundraising, so that’s the direction I took.”

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from UC Berkeley and a master’s in nonprofit administration from the University of San Francisco, Cootsona started working as a consultant, eventually launching her own business in 2004 called LRC Consulting. Her firm focuses on assisting nonprofits with fundraising, marketing, executive coaching, strategic planning and board development.

Cootsona describes herself as a person of faith, and said she regularly jokes that God brought her family to Chico (they moved here because her husband, Greg, was offered a job as a pastor at Bidwell Presbyterian Church).

Shortly after moving to Chico, she became involved with the Jesus Center, and served as assistant director there from 2003 to 2006. She left to focus on her own business, but said she’s excited to return to the organization and apply the wealth of knowledge she’s acquired through consulting. In the interim, she has remained a regular volunteer at the center, and as a consultant she’s worked locally with the Torres Community Shelter, Catalyst Domestic Violence Services, Youth for Change and other groups.

Cootsana’s appointment comes after the sudden departure of previ-

ous director Bill Such, who held the position for 10 years. The Jesus Center announced his leaving in an Oct. 12 press release, citing a difference in opinion on the future vision and direction of the organization.

Ryan Vaught, president of the center’s board of directors, said he could give no further details about the change in leadership or other future changes at the center during a phone interview Tuesday (Oct. 27). He did, however, praise Cootsona’s extensive experience.

For her part, Cootsona said it would be premature for her to discuss any changes at the Jesus Center before stepping into the position, speaking with stakeholders and conducting her own evaluation from the inside. She said her first goals are to identify the most pressing issues and conduct a thorough triage of the organization’s financial situation.

“I’m obviously going in with a lot of questions, because I haven’t been intimately involved in the conversation lately,” she said. “I don’t have solutions up my sleeve yet, I have to figure out what the actual problems are. But I’ve got time to listen well and make sure I get all of the contours and perspectives.”

Cootsona did share her personal thoughts on homelessness: “I think the mark of a good community is one that really embraces everybody,” she said. “If something is good for you and me and not for another part of the population, then it’s not good.

“Certain behaviors aren’t culturally acceptable, so we need to discourage those behaviors, but also give people a break and be in a community with them.

Just because someone wears a backpack and sleeps somewhere other than a home doesn’t mean they’re not human.”

Religion helps shape her views toward homelessness. “God’s love for the poor is all over the scriptures,” she said.

“During the interview, they asked me, ‘How are you going to bring Jesus to the job?’ I said, ‘Well, the good news is Jesus is already here.’

“I’m a Presbyterian and we’re not into a lot of outward signs of spirituality … but when I go to the Jesus Center I feel something there that’s real and palpable. God is there. I felt it the first time I walked in years ago, and I felt it when I walked in yesterday.”

Religion forgives Panel discusses justice and mercy through lens of Book in Common

T

he fact that so many practicing Christians accept capital punishment is an amazing contradiction to Greg Cootsona. Not only does Christianity preach mercy alongside the world’s other major religions, but it’s also rooted in one of history’s most famous examples of an unjust execution, Jesus’ crucifixion.

Cootsona is a comparative religion and humanities lecturer at Chico State and a former pastor at Bidwell Presbyterian Church.

He and two colleagues from the same department, Jason Clower and Daniel Veidlinger, made up a panel for a forum titled “Justice and Mercy Across Religions” at Chico State’s Ayres Hall on Tuesday (Oct. 27).

The forum was part of the year-long series of Book in Common events hosted by Chico State and Butte College. This year’s book is Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, a lawyer, advocate of social justice and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative.

Through Stevenson’s own comingof-age and his interviews with death row inmates, some of whom he believes weren’t fairly tried,

the memoir calls for reform of the U.S. justice system.

Through that lens, the panel discussed attitudes toward justice and mercy in Christianity, Confucianism, Islam and Hinduism.

Regarding Christianity, Stevenson doesn’t reference the Bible much in Just Mercy, Cootsona said. But in his argument for abolishing the death penalty he does quote a passage from the Gospel of John in which Jesus intervenes on the execution of an adulteress and says: “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”

“Jesus, I think, is saying that this is not punishment brought justly,” Cootsona said. “Secondly, if we know the full arc of the gospel, there is a foreshadowing that Jesus himself will be put to death through capital punishment.”

For instance, ancient Chinese governments used capital punishment sparingly, recognizing the social costs associated with, say, executing a father of five children “even if he’s a terrible son of a gun.” And much like the presentday U.S., most sentences were automatically reduced.

“So, you might be sentenced for some misdeed to be flogged for 20 strokes,” Clower said. “But everybody in the courtroom would be looking at a little chart that said, ‘If the judge says 20, you actually get seven.’ They liked to come out strong, but in practice there was always mercy exercised.”

Whereas our system is “adversarial”—two lawyers argue opposite sides and twist facts—the Confucian system was “inquisitorial,” Clower said. “Judges would be caring, but stern, and kind of behave like everybody’s dad, call all the kids together and dispense treatment that would restore relationships.” However, Clower doesn’t believe that far-Eastern principles would apply easily to the U.S. justice system.

“One thing is that the Confucian system was paternalistic,” he said. “There is enough paternalism and condescension for people who show up in court in our system.”

As for the current perception of Islam, Veidlinger said he understands how it’s been distorted by the judgments and violence of extremist group ISIS. “Many people in the modern world who watch the news get the sense that Islam is very harsh,” he said. “But

that has certainly not been the case traditionally. Throughout history, Islamic states have been very merciful.”

Veidlinger pointed to the 99 names of God in Islam, of which the most important is Ar-Rahim, which means “the merciful one,” he said. “That shows you the importance of mercy and compassion in the Islamic tradition.”

It’s equally important in Hinduism, Veidlinger said, particularly regarding the concept of karma—that actions influence an individual’s future, and the key element is intention.

Veidlinger emphasized that ideals of mercy and justice are woven into religious texts and practices going back thousands of years.

“It’s not like being merciful and compassionate is a modern-day idea,” he said. “All of these traditions have people who have realized that laws can be interpreted in different ways and God isn’t always angry.”

Murthy recently released a call to action detailing the benefits of walking for at least 20 minutes a day. Of course, all exercise is good for you, but Murthy says walking tends to be the easiest for people to stick with. His report is based on research that found walking cuts the risk of diabetes, dementia, depression, colon cancer, cardiovascular disease, anxiety and high blood pressure by 40 percent or more.

Want to get moving, but don’t know how to get started? Here are 11 tips to help make walking more enjoyable, easier to fit into your schedule, and something you can stick with for the long haul.

1. Find your natural rhythm Figure out the best time to walk for your schedule. Maybe it’s first thing in the morning, or with your kids on the way to school. Or it could be after lunch, before bed, or with friends on the weekend.

2. Seize the opportunity whenever you can Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park a few blocks from your destinations. Ride public transit, which usually involves a short walk on both ends of the trip. Run some of your errands on foot. It all adds up.

Pay attention to how you can naturally incorporate walking into your life, rather than making it something to add to a busy schedule. Studies show you’re more likely to stick with exercise when it is a regular part of your day, and not something that cuts into leisure time.

3. Start small but think big Be realistic in your goals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended daily minimum for exercise— 30 minutes—is a good starting point. You can even do it in two or three separate trips if you want.

Over time, you can work your way up to longer distances. Many people are now doing walking marathons or half-marathons. In fact, three out of eight finishers of the Portland Marathon now walk, and some marathons are actually designated as walking-only events.

4. Keep track of your progress A pedometer is a great way to keep track of how much you walk, and many smart phones now have similar devices built right into them. Fitness experts recommend about 10,000 steps a day, but the average American walks about half that. Try tracking your own steps to see how far you’re walk-

ing on an average day.

5. Identify as a walker Walkers are athletes too. It’s good exercise and an enjoyable pastime, just like biking or basketball. Claim it as your sport, and you might do it more often.

Solidify your commitment by taking the walking pledge.

perhaps with a destination like a coffee shop, park, or an awesome view. Wear walking gear that is comfortable, and that you feel good in. And don’t set overly tough goals.

“If you’re slogging through something you don’t enjoy, you won’t stick with it,” says David W. Brock, Ph.D., assistant professor of exercise and movement science at the University of Vermont.

7. Invigorate your social life Suggest a “walking date” with your partner, friend, or family member. Invite dinner guests to stroll around the block after a meal. And instead of meeting someone for lunch, a drink, or a movie, go for a walk before you sit down together.

In New York City, for instance, it’s a longstanding tradition for folks to walk together through Central Park or along the Brooklyn Promenade. In San Antonio, it’s the River Walk. What would be the equivalent activity in your town?

8. Try a walking meeting Instead of gathering around a conference table, walk around the block. You’ll likely see a spike in people’s creativity and attention.

In 2009, 30 walking groups were launched in Albert Lea, Minnesota, as part of a community-wide campaign to improve health. Six years later, more than half are still going. GirlTrek, a growing organization dedicated to helping African-American women stay in shape, has launched tons of walking groups, from Oakland to Philadelphia.

Respondents were asked whether they’d used marijuana in the past year, and whether they had signs of problematic use, such as trying but being unable to quit using weed heavily despite harm to health, or causing depression or anxiety. The most recent survey indicates that 22 million Americans, or 10 percent of the total population, now uses pot. And about 1 in 3 users—or 6.8 million people—showed signs of dependence or abuse.

Use increased across all age groups, but was most common among people ages 18 to 29. The researchers attributed the increase in smoking to a cultural shift regarding recreational use.

Generation to generation Local farmer shares family history on the land, visions of the future

stands why this is the case, but offered a different perspective to about 20 history buffs who gathered at the Chico Museum last Saturday (Oct. 24) morning.

“Bidwell was an amazing guy, but most of you know his story, so the one I’m going to tell you today is a little bit different,” Roney, who owns and operates Roney Wines with his wife, Susan, said at the outset of his presentation. “It’s the rest of the story.”

Roney is uniquely qualified to tell that tale. He is a sixth generation local farmer, and currently grows wine grapes, almonds, walnuts and pistachios on land his great, great, great grandfather settled more than 160 years ago. He is descended from four different pioneer families who came to the area in Chico’s early days, and offered a look at the region’s agricultural history through their personal stories, complete with historic family photographs.

Roney’s third great grandfather, who was

also named John, first came to Butte County in 1849 on a wagon train. The modern Roney explained his ancestor—who was 17 when he first arrived here—fell in love with the land, but didn’t stick around long for lack of another kind of love. He moved on, meeting and marrying a woman named Mary True in the Napa area before returning to Butte County in 1852. He settled along Pine Creek and the Sacramento River on land made available through the Homestead Act, which was passed that same year.

“Back then, a $12 filing fee got you 160 acres,” Roney said, explaining his ancestor initially chose the area to start a 16

“The only real settlers here at the time were miners, so the main job of agriculture then was providing food for them,” Roney explained. “What the miners wanted was beef steak and flapjacks, so most of the early agriculture here was dedicated to raising cattle and growing wheat.

“John had a part in getting the cattle industry started here,” Roney said, explaining that the valley was well suited for cattle in the winter, but not in the summer. This necessitated moving the herd to higher ground for summer, and for several generations the Roneys drove their cattle, on horseback, to family properties around Eagle Lake and the Clover and Harvey valleys.

Roney participated in these drives as a boy, and shared a 50-year-old picture of him and other family members on a cattle drive.

Two other branches of Roney’s family tree, the Shannons and the Bennets, were primarily wheat farmers, and neighbors of the early Roneys. Another branch, the Uhl family, were pioneering almond farmers south of Chico just after the turn of the 20th

century, when nut-bearing specialty crops began to take the hold they maintain today on the local landscape.

As the families intermarried, their farming ventures overlapped and evolved, and Roney’s presentation tracked these transitions through personal stories and pictures.

He successfully added a human face to the advent of mechanization, for example, through pictures of his great grandfather Archie Bennett walking mule teams pulling plows, and later driving the family’s first Avery tractor.

The presentation also included some important historical tidbits. Roney says his father and uncle were the first farmers in the world to use almond husks to feed cattle, now a common practice, and also helped start the Chico Bean Growers Co-Op, which continues today as North Valley Ag Services.

At the end of his presentation, Roney fielded questions from the audience, including some about the future of the family farm.

An audience member noted Roney has two daughters, and asked who might take the reins for the seventh generation.

“As far as our original homestead property, I’ve beaten it into the heads of my two kids that even if they don’t want to farm, or have husbands or even kids that want to farm, they can lease it out, but to keep the property., and keep it as ag land.

“We want to keep it that way for perpetuity,” he said. “There’s been a lot of pressure for us to develop, particularly along Highway 32. But our feeling is we want to keep the agricultural line, and the Greenline, right where it is. Chico can expand to the east if it

needs to, where the soil isn’t as good.

“The Vina loam we’re growing on here is like no other soil in the world,” he said. “It’s the best soil you’ve ever seen.” □

I call bullshirt So metal After years of planning and waiting for the right opportunity to come along, longtime Chico denizens and metal fabricators Grant Stephens and Tim Buckner (pictured) have finally found the space they need to open up their metal fabrication business, Old Chico Iron. The two friends had kept in touch over the years, through separate moves around California and other life events. When they both found themselves back in Chico in 2010 with a shared love of metal work, they formed a dream of starting up a fabrication business together.

Stephens, a welding instructor at Yuba College, and Buckner, a welding inspector, first launched Old Chico Iron three years ago, but circumstances forced them to shut down prematurely. In August of this year, they found a new space for their second attempt at Old Chico Iron, and now they hope to be able to quit their day jobs to become full-time metal fabricators. Buckner: Well, we first met making a mountain biking trail in Forest Ranch years ago. And then, [Stephens] was the one who got me started with metal. Eventually we lived together, and stayed in touch through the years after we moved.

We both wanted the same thing for our professional lives when we came back five years ago, and finally, here we are, doing what we love.

What are you currently creating?

Buckner: We just finished making

Stephens: The other metal guys all have their niche, and they fill it. If something comes their way that they don’t or can’t do, they don’t do the job. We are willing to work with the client for whatever they want. We can fabricate anything, and we want to. We love talking with clients and working with them to give them the best possible product we can.

A few weeks ago, I was busy taking family photos on a golf course in Rhode Island, where my brother was getting married, when one of Chico’s more fun downtown festivals was getting underway. The wedding turned out beautifully, of course, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a wee bit bummed to be missing the fifth annual installment of the You Know You’re From Chico event Oct. 17. I saw lots of pictures, though, and heard stories of fun times had by all. So I’m guessing it, too, was a success.

One of the vendors, a Facebook friend of mine I met a year or so ago playing pool, was one of the reasons I wanted to go to the event. She’d recently started posting pictures of her new business venture, Bullshirters, which she launched with partners Johnny Rojo and Chico artist Thorn Hart (you know, the mastermind behind the old Normal Street Bar ads).

“Our slogan is ‘Politically incorrect wearables,’” Barbi Boeger told me by phone the other day. Chicoans may remember Boeger from her campaign for a City Council seat back in 2004. “People love it,” she added.

It’s easy to see why, with Hart’s signature designs and messages that hit home in a very, yes, politically incorrect sort of way. “Chico’s party plan: Just 8 years for a 4-year degree!” and “Chico California: This is the college town your parents warned you against.” Their bestseller so far is what Boeger dubs the “dead bars” T-shirt, which lists many of this town’s dearly departed pubs (RIP Towne Lounge!).

My favorite part of Boeger’s story, however, isn’t the fun aspect of her shirts, or the fact that they are printed locally (at Limey Tees), but that the venture is part for profit and part to help others. Her idea was to create a tribute to her daughter, Jazzi Boeger-Easter, who was killed in a car accident four years ago on her way home from Butte College. One hundred percent of the profits from the dead bar shirts, and $1 from each other sale, will go into the Jazzi Fairy Godmother Fund, which Boeger envisions being used to help local college students who hit hard times.

“There are things that happen to kids when they first get out of mom and dad’s house,” said Boeger, who has long volunteered with the Butte County Toy Run, which helps local children get toys for Christmas but also things like clothing and school supplies for the rest of the year.

“There’s nothing for college kids when they screw up, or when they need a part for their car.”

Recipients will be nominated, Boeger said, by teachers or friends. If there are no nominees, she will donate to the Butte College food pantry.

Michael Madieros’ guerrilla tactics offer a unique take on solving Chico’s homeless problem

haddeus Brown was making sure his buddy’s bags didn’t get swiped, keeping an eye on them outside Chico City Hall while the owner, who was also homeless, was off arguing with his girlfriend.

That’s when Brown, 19, was approached by a hulking figure. Based on the newcomer’s nearly head-to-toe tattoos, flatbilled baseball cap and long goatee, Brown assumed he also lived on the streets. He was wrong. The man introduced himself as Michael Madieros from Stairways Programming and offered Brown shelter, help toward long-term independence and, most immediately, a ride.

“I didn’t believe it at all,” Brown said during a recent interview. “I was like, ‘Where are we going? I’ve been on the streets since I was 12.’ He said, ‘Well, you’re not anymore.’”

Stairways’ main objective is rapidly housing the people least able to house themselves, whether due to mental illness or drug addiction, or both. And it’s important, Madieros says, to offer a hand the moment people are ready for help.

“Nobody’s going to wait a month,” he said. “If somebody’s ready for services today, you’d better provide those services today. Otherwise, you’ve lost them.”

Madieros first joined Stairways as a social worker in March 2014 and took over as executive director about seven months ago, when founder Mike Little parted ways after about 15 years of leading the nonprofit. It’s maintained a low profile despite offering 36 beds—which are nearly always full—and a host of on-site rehabilitative services, serving 200 meals a day and conducting neardaily outreach efforts in homeless hotspots throughout the community.

shelters in San Diego and San Francisco, Madieros was hired to implement new models of recovery, at least for Chico—harm reduction and Housing First. They’re nothing new in the realm of social work, but Madieros has still ruffled some feathers by bringing those philosophies to Chico. For instance, he considers sobriety requirements at local shelters barriers to entry, but some local service providers and homeless advocates don’t like to hear that.

“I’ve somewhat brought it on myself with how I deliver the message,” he admitted.

“I’m a bull in a china shop.”

The 6th Street Center for Youth also embraces harm reduction and Housing First methods, Madieros says, but Stairways is the only organization in town doing so that serves adults. And based on a limited sample, it works. Since Madieros became director, only two of 76 residents have returned to homelessness.

That’s his favorite statistic. Even in a city divided politically and ideologically on homelessness, everyone can agree on that goal, Madieros says. “We all want homeless people to have homes.”

While smoking a cigarette at the

park bench outside Stairways, Brown, with his Southern accent, said he isn’t one to dwell on misfortune: “It’s like, quit with the pity-party, you know?” But he does acknowledge it’s been rough since his mother’s house outside of Hollywood, Fla., was raided during a methamphetamine bust when he was 6 years old.

Brown’s uncle assumed legal responsibility for him—Child Protective Services would have otherwise—but as the only white kid attending an all-black school, he was picked on mercilessly both for his skin color and because his uncle is gay.

“I got rocks thrown at me and got called ‘cracker’ and ‘faggot’ and shit,” he recalled. “I was always fighting.”

Brown ran away at 12 years old.

He was already 6 feet tall, making it easy to lie about his age and hang with a much older crowd. Living on the streets, he used and sold drugs; eventually police caught him with 50 ecstasy pills. Trying to leave trouble behind, he hitchhiked across the country to find his mom in far Northern California.

It didn’t work out. After a couple weeks, he and his mother argued every day, so Brown headed north, to Oregon, to live with his father. Within two days, they got in a fist fight.

“I got tired of living and being a kid and nobody seeing a problem But about two years ago in Greenville, with a kid walking around all night, Brown met a girl—someone to “build a life every night,” he said. “I was in a position with.” Just a few weeks ago, he came to where I was suicidal.”

Chico for the first time, intending to find work and a home for himself and his girlfriend, who wants to attend Chico State but still lives with her family in the foothills. He got a job at a used car lot, but without proof of income from his first paycheck, hadn’t been able to sign a lease for housing.

Once again, Brown was sleeping outside, but under the added pressure of providing for a family. With his girlfriend due to deliver a child in about a month, he was more desperate than ever. Stairways has helped.

After meeting him outside City Hall,

Madieros took Brown to the Stairways facility, a nondescript building in a neighborhood near Chico State.

(The address is kept secret.) Several residents, both men and women, usually sit at plastic picnic tables outside the facility’s sleeping units, smoking cigarettes. Some show outward signs of anxiety, like legs bouncing uncontrollably. Throughout the day, clinicians from Butte County Behavioral Health come and go, as do law enforcement officers following up on referrals.

That’s not to say there’s tension in the air. Stairways has loose rules. There is no drug testing, but residents can’t use on-site. All decisions that affect residents are put to a community vote. There is no curfew. Those who

miss dinner will be saved a plate. Residents’ rooms are inspected once a month.

“Our goal is for them to clean their rooms every day, and we work with them to get there,” Madieros said. “However, when somebody is just coming off the streets, they have mental illness and no living skills. We want them to say, ‘I have to because ...’ and clean their room on their own. That’s the same thought process that says ‘I can’t have another beer because I have work tomorrow,’ or ‘I can’t yell at my mother because that will hurt our relationship.’ That’s the same sort of reasoning.

“We’re trying to give people the skills to live an independent and healthy life.”

Carrington Forbes, 22, believes strongly in the program. He works as night staff for Stairways and conducts outreach to homeless people, which is easy because he knows most of them from living on the streets.

Forbes became homeless on his 18th birthday, when his parents kicked him out of the house for not having a job. “I didn’t take them seriously,” he recalled. “They literally gave me a suitcase and a bus pass as my birthday presents.”

He lived out of his truck for months, still attending classes at Fair View High School mostly for the free lunches. After graduation, he hitchhiked the country for a couple years, and then returned to Chico, spending most days at City Plaza and camping far outside of town in a field between orchards. For a few months he was hooked on cocaine, but was able to kick that habit relatively easily. His real problem was alcohol.

“There was a six-month period I don’t remember at all because I was getting blackout drunk every night,” he said. He stole bottles from grocery stores, drinking at least a half-gallon of hard alcohol every day. Eventually his eyes and skin turned yellow.

That’s when he admitted himself to rehab.

Now he’s enrolled in classes at Butte College.

Originally he wanted to be a science teacher, but now he’s leaning toward social work because he’s good at it.

“When I go do outreach to these people, I can tell them I understand what they’re going through,” he said. “I tell them, ‘I got off the streets—if I can do it, you can do it.’”

As of this year, eligible programs cannot impose requirements such as the Esplanade House’s rule that participants must be sober for 30 days prior to entry.

In terms of treating substance abuse, Stairways follows the harm reduction model—accepting drug use as a reality and working to minimize its harmful affects through a spectrum of strategies, from safer use, to managed use and complete abstinence. By way of example, Madieros described two former Stairways residents who abused alcohol heavily, with one often driving drunk back to the facility. “You’d come out each morning and see his poor parking job,” he said.

Stairways operates on the Housing First

model, which attempts to remove barriers (such as sobriety and mental health requirements) to place homeless people directly into their own independent living situation, rather than moving individuals through different levels of transitional housing. The approach has been demonstrably successful in the U.S. and overseas, and starting in 2008 the federal government has pushed for its national implementation.

One local casualty of that push is the Esplanade House, a transitional housing facility that’s long served Chico families who’ve suffered from homelessness, disability and addiction. It recently lost $150,000 in grant OCTOBER 29, 2015

set back recovery, Madieros took away the driver’s keys.

“Then they’d come stumbling back, just falling-down drunk,” he said. “Step one of harm reduction is to do less harm to others, and now they’re not driving and there goes their risk of harming somebody else.” He’s worked with the two residents ever since, and they’ve both been sober for about a year.

Not everyone believes in harm reduction.

Madieros is regularly bombarded with hateful emails from locals who believe he’s giving homeless people drugs and handing out needles, and he’s continually justifying his practices in board meetings in order to plead for funding.

(Stairways has seven full-time staff members, but ideally would have about 15, Madieros said, and he could take “20 more people off the streets right now” if he had more facility space.)

His response is that it’s important to extend services to people who can’t stay at the Esplanade House, the Torres Community Shelter or Jesus Center because of clean and sober requirements. There’s no questioning those organizations’ value to the community, he says. They each house, feed and provide services to a great number of homeless people and “absolutely need to exist.”

But insobriety remains a major barrier to treatment. “[Sobriety] is a ridiculous expectation if we know a whole bunch of people are out there because of substance abuse disorders,” he said.

“My job as a social worker is to get homeless people off the streets and engage them in services.”

Stairways has been proactive on

that front for the past several months, hitting the streets early in the morning with outreach efforts throughout the week. The CN&R tagged along during three recent excursions.

Madieros is nearly 6-foot-5 and fits snugly in the driver’s seat of his SUV. Despite driving to many of the same bridges and parks every day while on outreach, Madieros said he’s “directionally challenged” and frequently asked where to turn next. Providing directions from the passenger seat was Stairways’ chef, who probably not coincidentally goes only by Chef. The letters C-H-E-F are tattooed above his knuckles. In addition to whipping up about 200 healthy, allorganic meals for residents every day, he goes on outreach with Madieros most mornings.

Driving around Chico, Madieros shared snippets of his past. He was raised in the Barrio Logan neighborhood in San Deigo, where he was stabbed for the first time in the third grade.

Then there was a violent stint in a motorcycle club. After leading a double life as a biker who worked with homeless youth on weekends, Madieros eventually left the gang life behind entirely. He began working in homeless shelters, including harm reduction facilities in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. He moved to Chico while his wife completed her master’s degree in social work at Chico State.

two small coffees. They were looking for two homeless men they’d met the day before, and found them at the same place—sleeping against a building across the street from the coffee shop. Both men were covered only in a single blanket. One, frail and weather-worn, shivered and clearly savored the warmth on his hands when Madieros handed him a coffee.

The shivering man said he has family in Santa Cruz, where he was last sober. He started drinking again after his daughter died in a car accident. If he could verify that the man has family in Santa Cruz, Madieros said, and that they wanted him back, he would return the next day with a bus ticket.

“I’m going to get you help, just like I got you that coffee,” he said.

Back in the SUV, Madieros said the most important aspect of outreach is being honest.

“You have to keep your word.”

Madieros and Chef made several stops at homeless encampments and gathering areas, including Lindo Channel, City Plaza, the bike path paralleling the train tracks near Eighth Avenue, and the Bidwell Bowl Amphitheater near Children’s Playground. At the last stop, Chef pointed out cotton balls and orange syringe caps—telltale signs of drug injection—in between the amphitheater’s steps, just yards away from kids using playground equipment at the park.

Madieros sees that as an alarming confluence of hard drug users and a vulnerable population.

“There’s this narrative in the community that the homeless are all just nice people down on their luck,” he said. “That is absolutely the case with a huge majority of them, but as a mental health professional I can tell you it’s not the case with all of them. … Billy’s not living the same moralistic life they are. Billy is robbing and doing whatever he can to get high, and when Billy wants to get laid, he’s just taking that from somebody.”

That point was illustrated when Madieros got a call from Chico Police Sgt. Scott Zuschin, the supervisor for the department’s recently reactivated TARGET team, a special threeChico Police Sgt. officer unit dedicated to responding to chronic neighborhood problems. As part of Police Chief Mike O’Brien’s reorganization of the department to adopt a community policing model, he’s directed the TARGET team to collaborate with Stairways on outreach.

Zuschin wanted social workers along for a walk-through in Lindo Channel. After a streetside rendezvous, the team entered the channel and immediately encountered a homeless woman sitting in the dirt alongside the bike path, sobbing. She told Zuschin she needed a few minutes to gain her composure. Stairways case manager Mackenzie Lovie stayed back to talk to the woman, who then told her she’d just been raped.

During a separate interview, Zuschin said having Stairways along allowed the woman to open up, whereas she might not have filed a report without the presence of Lovie. The TARGET team was able to connect the woman with health services and “now she’s getting the help she needs,” he said.

The outreach efforts of Stairways and the TARGET team already dovetail, Zuschin said, so it makes sense to work together.

“We’re making those contacts, hearing what people need and just being available,” he said.

“For the longest time, the police department has been so short-staffed that we’ve been stuck inside our cars. But staffing has grown and we’re changing the culture of the department to be more interactive with the community—as a police department should be.”

In an effort to strengthen that approach, Zuschin recently met with Capt. Andy Duch of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office to explore the possibility of handing Butte County Jail inmates with mental illness or substance abuse disorders at risk of homelessness directly over to Stairways.

“My answer was certainly, yes, because that’s exactly what we do with our alternativecustody ankle-monitor program,” Duch said by phone with CN&R. Zuschin and Duch agreed on a system. Once an inmate is sentenced, assessed for risk and

enforced are coming to Stairways and engaging in programming rather than setting up camps outside.

That’s why Madieros supports the ordinance, seeing it as a tool to direct homeless people to services, and wants it extended citywide rather than just at the Civic Center and in parks and creeks. He said as much during the council meeting on Oct. 6, arguing that the law shouldn’t vary by location.

“When I go out to do outreach, when the officers are out there doing their thing, [it would be] a lot easier,” he told the council. “We don’t have to look at, ‘What street am I on? Is this the tactic I’m going to use to help this individual because I’m on this corner?’”

Supporting the law has drawn the ire of some advocates who say Madieros is helping the city trample on homeless peoples’ rights. But Madieros says his end game is housing homeless people. Even if it’s controversial, he’ll take all the help he can get.

As an expecting father, Brown

determined eligible for alternative custody, the TARGET team would pick them up from jail, take them to get an ankle monitor and deliver them to Stairways.

“That got my attention,” Duch said. “This is Chico PD, and they’re going to come pick up an inmate and deliver them to services? That’s awesome.”

Duch’s hope is that inmates won’t be back.

According to a survey of Stairways residents taken in March, of 23 residents who were on probation or parole when they entered Stairways, only one was reincarcerated.

Another argument for proactive

community engagement is preventing emergencies. Just last week, Madieros was walking along Fourth Street near City Plaza and saw from a distance that several people, including a man wearing a nice suit and a woman with “a hippie-ish vibe,” were stepping over something on the sidewalk, and they looked “really put out about it.”

“I realized they were stepping over a homeless gentleman dying on the street,” he said.

“All I could see was an awful lot of blood, and that he was choking to death.”

By the time Madieros crossed the street, five or six people had walked past the man, who he would learn later had suffered a seizure, bitten his tongue, and was choking on the blood.

Madieros understands the risks of coming in contact with bodily fluids but, seeing no sign of help, rolled the man on his side, cleared his airway and supported his head. Madieros says he could feel blood pumping over his hands.

While waiting for the emergency personnel who eventually stabilized the man and took him to the hospital, Madieros had “a slowmotion moment.” He’d watched two people he assumed were opposites, politically, act similarly indifferent toward someone in dire need.

“It just hit me—this issue is so divisive that people will watch a human being die,” he said.

“You don’t even call for help?”

Recently, opposing ideological stances regarding homelessness have been on full

display with the Chico City Council’s approval of the controversial Offenses Against Waterways and Public Property ordinance. It prohibits the storage of personal property on public land; establishes City Hall and the surrounding area as a “Civic Center” with an exhaustive list of prohibitions; extends the city’s existing civil-sidewalks ordinance (also known as the sit/lie law) to building entrances; and allows police officers to more easily cite homeless people for camping along Chico’s creeks and tributaries.

Critics say the law criminalizes homelessness and potentially represents a constitutional violation by targeting vulnerable populations. Supporters say it’s a tool for law enforcement and advocates to clean up the city and direct homeless people to services.

The ordinance doesn’t go into effect until the beginning of November, but Madieros is already seeing its influence. People who believe the law is being

Dive—vocalist Rachael Price, guitarist Mike “McDuck” Olson, bassist Bridget Kearney and drummer Mike Calabrese— for the first time relinquished some of its fiercely earned independence by working with a producer (the identity of whom as of press time was not yet officially released). And while the schedule has been hectic, the same chemistry that catapulted the band into the consciousness of the pop world served the foursome well when they needed it most.

“It was nice we had a stable of songs,” explained Calabrese during a recent interview. “We’re always writing here or there and we’ll do a little retreat and write five songs and come back with some new material. There is time in there, and having four writers makes it easier.”

Having four writers is also the secret to Lake Street Dive’s chameleonic appeal. Having dabbled in neo-swing, lounge, jazz, pop, gospel, rock and more, the band’s anything-goes aesthetic makes for a bold listen, regardless of the musical spectrum you most often reside in.

Price’s sultry vocals guide songs through hooky terrain full of lyrical wormholes and tight grooves.

“The thing is, the band sounds like the band no matter whose tune we’re playing,” said Calabrese. “It just makes for a naturally more eclectic type of mixture song to song. Every writer has kind of their own voice.”

Those voices were put to test during the sessions for their upcoming album.

Rather than recording in isolated rooms, separated from one another, the band experimented with being situated in the same room, where their natural symbioses could more organically develop.

“What ended up happening was I was playing drums in a room where Rachael was singing, and so I couldn’t overpower her,” explained Calabrese. “That forced all of us to focus in and listen to these songs at their core in a way that we really hadn’t before.”

The jazz portion of Lake Street Dive’s oeuvre has mostly been smoothed over in recent years (the band formed while students at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, primarily studying jazz). However, the new approach in the studio, interestingly, brought the group back to its improvisational roots.

“I think on Bad Self Portraits, people played what they wanted to,” says Calabrese. “That doesn’t really work when you’re forced in a room together and you need to play appropriately and succinctly to make sure everything in that room is controlled. There’s less of a safety net, but what you get out of that is more edge and urgency, and a little more spontaneity. It’s fresher, more honest and more human.”

That updated process was also not without its frustrations.

Aiming for the heart of humanity’s freak show

Those familiar with David Lynch’s 1980 movie version of the story, or who have seen the Victorian-era photos of the reallife Merrick (whose first name was actually Joseph) may recall the visual intensity of the Elephant Man’s pitiable deformations and wonder how a small theater company could possibly have the time, materials and prosthetic makeup expertise necessary for rendering such physical grotesquerie night after night in live performance.

The answer, as it turns out, is to have the actor cast in the role por-

tray Merrick’s physical presence with sheer skill and craftsmanship, sans makeup.

No small feat, but one that actor Nick Anderson achieves with aplomb—contorting his face and limbs and realigning his posture, convincingly occupying the lead roll in director Martin Chavira’s current production of Bernard Pomerance’s 1977 play The Elephant Man at the Blue Room Theatre.

Pomerance’s adaptation of Merrick’s story uses dramatic license to illuminate some of the between-the-lines moral ambiguity of Treves’ account, and also brings forth some of the sympathetic emotional resonance of this very human character as he interacts with a world that—until Dr. Treves (Caleb Mains) discovered and rescued him at age 21 to live out his life in the care of a London hospital—confined him to workhouses and freak shows.

The characters surrounding Merrick’s transformation—from freak show attraction in the company of singing pinheads (Amy Brown and Delisa Freistadt) and their manager (Saralysette Ballard) to upper-class darling—provide a vivid cross-section of Victorian society. There’s Ross (Justin McDavitt), the physically abusive and economically exploitative showman; Mrs. Kendal (Freistadt), a socially well-connected actress who befriends Merrick and introduces him to the upper crust of Naughty Nineties London, including the hospital’s director, Carr Gomm (Chris Scott), and princesses and duchesses (both Brown).

Ross sees Merrick’s deformities

as simply a resource to be marketed, with no regard for the feelings of the person contained within. Kendal recognizes through conversations ranging from Merrick’s assessment of the romantic weaknesses of Shakespeare’s Romeo (“Does he check her pulse? He only cares about himself.”) and his confession of desire for physical intimacy with a woman, that Merrick’s personality and humanity are in many ways more innocent than those of “normal” people trapped in the confines of contemporary, often hypocritical, moral strictures.

Freistadt plays Kendal as a woman whose experience of the stage has given her a worldliness that is both empathic and realistic, and her revelation to Merrick of the loveliness of the female form he has never seen is an act of courage and sympathy that leaves Merrick in appreciative tears, but when discovered by the morally overwrought Treves causes a break between them.

This exploration of the interaction of economic and moral motivation versus humanistic sympathy and action results in a nearly clinical examination of Victorian character and the resonance of its often-hypocritical sense of moral acceptability in current social forms. As the characters express their identification with Merrick in self-congratulatory ways—“polished like a mirror, and we shout, ‘Hallelujah’ when he reflects us”—we can sense that playwright Pomerance is also calling out his audience’s sense of ethics in a world still fascinated by and exploitative of its own grotesque deformations. □

really a problem in this brilliant, fragmentary biopic.

Fassbender is excellent throughout and perfectly suited to a role and script centered more on mental gymnastics and emotional short circuits than on anything else. by Juan-Carlos Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (West Selznick Wing, etc.) shows a special flair here for dialogue that reflects the impacted, three-jumps-ahead logic of Jobs’ extraordinary mindset: part egomaniac, part visionary innovator, part wounded and self-wounding child.

Walter Isaacson’s monumental Steve Jobs biography of Jobs is credited as the Starring Michael basis for Sorkin’s screenplay, but Fassbender, Kate Sorkin and director Danny Boyle Winslet and Seth build Steve Jobs on a highly comrogen. Directed pressed dramatic structure. Basically,

Each of those episodes includes an encounter with Lisa, the daughter born out of wedlock whom Jobs at first refuses to acknowledge. Lisa, a different age in each episode, is played by three different young actors—Makenzie Moss (age 5), Ripley Sobo (9), Perla Haney-Jardine (19)—and the sometimes painful progress of their relationship becomes a central emotional thread in the film’s story.

Sorkin works in telling glimpses of Jobs’ relations with several other key figures in his life. Steve

Wozniak (Seth Rogen), John Sculley (Jeff Daniels), Andy Hertzfeld (Michael Stuhlbarg), Lisa’s mother (Katherine Waterston) and Joanna Hoffman (Kate Winslet) all get significant attention.

As Jobs’ longtime aide, confidante, adviser and managing partner, Hoffman is especially important.

She is a very active participant in all three episodes, and her mixture of witty practicality, moral and emotional stamina and clear-headed dedication counts for quite a lot in the film’s portraiture of Jobs and his key associates. □

The great Taiwanese auteur Hou Hsiao-Hsien is one of the most revered names in contemporary world cinema. His much-admired films of the last 20 years or so include Flight of the Red Balloon (2007), Café Lumière (2003), Millennium Mambo (2001), Flowers of Shanghai (1998) and The Puppetmaster (1993).

His new film, The Assassin, won him the best director award at the most recent Cannes Film Festival, but the film itself is not getting the lavish praise that some of its predecessors did. Still, it does have the ravishing visual beauty and the offbeat approach to narrative that you’d perhaps expect from this director’s films.

Shu Qi (star of two previous Hou films) plays the title character, a young princess trained as an assassin for a conflict between neighboring states in the time of the T’ang dynasty. It’s an oddly subdued mixture of historical romance and martial arts film, with a convoluted story that’s difficult to follow. Visual splendor and the hot-and-cold rhythms of the dramatics are the chief rewards. □

Surprisingly, Bridge of Spies doesn’t overplay the twists that you more or less expect in a cinematic history lesson directed

by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks.

James Donovan (Hanks) is an insurance lawyer recruited by U.S. government agents to act as defense lawyer for Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), a man accused (circa 1957) of spying for the U.S.S.R. During the sentencing phase, Donovan raises the possibility of an exchange between the two countries of condemned spies. The film has already begun to follow the case of Francis Gary Powers, pilot of a U-2 spy plane shot down over Soviet territory, and Donovan serves as the key intermediary in an exchange of Abel for Powers. Donovan’s heroic combination of ethical integrity and shrewdly political maneuvering is played with characteristically understated dignity by Hanks, and Rylance’s wonderfully minimalist rendering of Abel’s own courage and integrity gets even more out of the deadpan understatement that seems central to the whole production. Botanist/astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is stranded on Mars after a hur-

ricane of space debris forces his fellow crew members, who believe he’s been killed, to return to Earth without him. That sets up a kind of space-age Robinson Crusoe story for Watney, who must find ways to survive in a place where nothing grows, while also trying to cobble together the means of communication and travel from the scavenged remnants of technology. And the realization that Watney is still alive pushes Mission Control (and, eventually, the crew on the ship headed back to Earth) into some rapidly evolving scenarios of high-pressure risk-taking in science and technology. If that sounds overly technical, rest assured that The Martian frequently pairs its scientific seriousness with the rambunctiousness of some of its characters. The stranded Watney’s early declaration—“I’m gonna science the shit out of this!”—is emblematic of the film and its determination to put an audience-friendly spin on its science and its fiction. Sicario

Sicario’s subject matter (the interagency “war on drugs” in Juárez/El Paso) is topical and grim, but director Denis Villeneuve and first-time screenwriter Taylor Sheridan give an account of it that is uncommonly rich in character and ferociously alert to moral complexities. Emily Blunt plays a tightly wound FBI agent who is enlisted to work with a task force led by an amiably gonzo government “contractor” (Josh Brolin). That puts her alongside the shady-looking Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro), a task-force participant whose motives and allegiances are one of the story’s more convoluted puzzles. Ace cinematographer Roger Deakins does great work with the story’s terrain, the desert topography as well as the social landscape. And Jóhann Johannsson’s growling electronic score is integral at every level. Sheridan’s script is at its best when it’s setting up the characters’ moral quandaries, but the dramatic overload in the later portions seems to leave the characters stranded somewhere between moral insight and emotional closure. LaRocca’s organic hillside-grown cabernet vines, 44 by years old and farmed Alastair on rich volcanic soil, Bland produce exceptionally intense fruit, he says— and LaRocca believes that there may be no better way to express the potential of this 23-acre patch of earth than by making a single-vineyard wine.

Also called vineyard designates, single-vineyard wines are made using grapes harvested from just one site.

“The tradition really goes back to the French and their word terroir, which describes the soil, climate and elevation that make a certain site so impressive,” said LaRocca, who sells much of his annual grape tonnage but also makes his own line of estate wines at his LaRocca Vineyards and Winery.

To Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker at Ravenswood Winery in Sonoma, single-vineyard wines provide those who taste them with a sort of virtual travel experience.

“You can’t usually take a glass of milk back to the cow that made it, but single-vineyard wines can take you right back to a specific time and place,” said Peterson, whose winemaking career has long focused on showcasing some of California’s best zinfandel vineyards—including the Old Hill Vineyard of Sonoma Valley, which was planted in the

1880s and produces a distinctly dark and spicy wine. “It’s like a fingerprint of the land.”

Most wines today are blends of multiple wines, often grown hundreds of miles apart. Blending can round out rough edges and soften charismatic wines into more enjoyable—and more marketable—products. Though good winemaking often depends on blending, the process can steal a wine’s unique characteristics while muffling idiosyncrasies of terroir.

Marco Cappelli, a winemaker and grape grower in the Sierra foothills, notes that many blended wines may taste, more or less, the same.

“Most wine on the market is homogenized by blending different vineyards and/or appellations together,” Cappelli wrote in an email. Cappelli owns the Herbert Vineyard, an esteemed zinfandel block in El Dorado County used for several labels as a vineyard designate. The grapes, Cappelli says, are unique and charismatic enough to stand alone in a bottle, but he concedes that “business reasons” can also play a role in whether or not one makes a vineyard designate. The Herbert Vineyard, for example, is a respected name among winemakers.

“When I bought my property … I knew that its reputation would allow me to get a higher price for the fruit, and that my customers would be able to sell their wine at a higher price because of the designation,” Cappelli wrote.

Adam Lee of Siduri Wines,

in Santa Rosa, makes more than a dozen single-vineyard pinot noirs from Oregon and California.

Lee, like many winemakers, feels that pinot noir, among all varieties, best reflects a location’s soil chemistry, sunlight intensity, temperature and precipitation.

For example, 2011 was a cold and difficult growing season, and in the pinot noir crop of Oregon, according to Lee, it showed.

“We decided that for 2011, none of our Oregon vineyards were worthy of vineyard designation,” said Lee. “So we blended them as ‘Willamette Valley’ wines.”

But blending is not necessarily a task reserved for lesser-grade vineyards and can be an art form in itself. Many winemakers blend “within the vineyard,” selecting grapes from different corners of the property and later portioning them into the same tank.

But LaRocca warns that even blending within a vineyard can blur away fine distinctions that could be most profitably marketed on their own. He recalled a private tour of the famed Chateau d’Yquem vineyard in southern Bordeaux, when the owner of the property pointed to two adjacent blocks of grapes.

“They were 20 feet apart on the same vineyard,” LaRocca said.

“But he told me, ‘That section is for my $30 bottles, and right over there, that’s for my $500 bottles.’”

Which one might take for a lesson in the value of terroir—or just of marketing. □

It’s been five years since singer/songwriter Julienne Dweck’s debut album, On Paper, and her long-awaited follow up, Black Licorice, is a relationship-centric feast for the ears. It’s whimsical and adventurous one minute (get a load of the fun, percussive, big band-meets-pop sound of “The Sea”), and subdued and serious the next (the palpable emotional tension of “Uncomfortable”). Dweck knows how to get and hold your attention. A cornucopia of musical styles is explored via Dweck’s admirable work on keys and her throaty, occasionally sing-songy vocals. “Nearly”—a subdued, insightful track that ponders a relationship that nearly was and lingers on the many related events that could have been—stands as the album’s highlight, providing a probing, eloquent narrative over a slow, driving piano track. Black Licorice is a lively, eclectic musical experience; here’s hoping Dweck doesn’t keep us waiting another five years for the next one.

Like John Cougar might’ve said, this debut solo album from Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard “hurts so good.” As you might’ve gathered from Howard’s lyrics to “Wild Child,” Thunderbitch is like a swift kick to the Mellencamps. The album is gritty, unpolished rock times infinity, bringing both classic and modern brands of high-energy garage rock—with nods to everything from The Ramones to Jerry Lee Lewis to the White Stripes—together in a satisfying way. The self-explanatory “I Just Wanna Rock ’n’ Roll” is a mosh-inducing blast, while the punk number “I Don’t Care” is full of gleeful, youthful recklessness. Howard wails and bellows throughout like an apocalyptic thunderstorm, particularly on the rocker “Closer,” and there is rarely a reprieve from all the intensity. Thunderbitch is an exciting release, no two ways about it, and it will make believers out of anyone foolish enough to think that rock ’n’ roll is dead.

eyes On the scene As long as arts dEVo has been in town, there have been dedicated folks shooting videos and photos of local shows, documenting the Chico scene. And usually in exchange for no more than a free pass to the gig. One of the most passionate and prolific was Jim Johnston, an old-school video taper who had his local band-sticker-covered camera pointed at every damn rock show at the Burro Room, Juanita’s, Blue Room, etc., during the 1980s and ’90s. I have no idea where he is these days, but I’ve heard heart-sinking rumors that he chucked all his old tapes before leaving town some years back.

These days, of course, we can rest easy knowing that the images being captured will not suffer the same fate (until the grid collapses at least). And we currently have some very dedicated photograIzabella Hilsee of VEXED phers and videographers on the scene providing a phOtO by sesar sanchez near constant and often instantaneous record of what’s happening on the town—from the refined stage shots of Curtis Pope (facebook.com/chicomusicalendar) to the rough GoPro videos of Fox E. by Chico musician and videographer Jim Miller. It’s an intimate scene with local musical mainstay Jim Brobeck doing a cover of Bob dylan and danny o’Keefe’s “Well, Well, Well.” He’s almost in silhouette, hunched over his open-tuned acoustic lap guitar as he picks out the soulful, bluesy rendition. For the week oF october 29, 2015 ARIES (March 21-April 19): On a Janu-

ary morning in 1943, the town of Spearfish, South Dakota, experienced very weird weather. At 7:30 a.m. the temperature was minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit. In the next two minutes, due to an unusual type of wind sweeping down over nearby Lookout Mountain, thermometers shot up 49 degrees. Over the next hour and a half, the air grew even warmer. But by 9:30, the temperature had plummeted back to minus 4 degrees. I’m wondering if your moods might swing with this much bounce in the coming weeks. As long as you keep in mind that no single feeling is likely to last very long, it doesn’t have to be a problem.
