She noticed an irritating smell that she recognized as formaldehyde, a chemical that is used in building materials and is linked to cancer and childhood asthma.

She sent a letter to the principal, along with some photoby copied articles about the dangers Robert Speer formaldehyde posed. Now retired, she had worked in one of the portables for nearly 30 years. I learned too that in recent years as many as a half-dozen teachers at her school who had worked in portables also had cancer.

I don’t know whether the portables caused their illness. It may be coincidental. But parents of the

thousands of Chico kids in portables should know that the only large-scale study of portables, done by the California Air Resources Board in 2004, found inadequate fresh air during 40 percent of classroom hours.

It also found higher levels of formaldehyde that exceeded the state’s chronic-exposure limits in nearly all portable classrooms. Levels in portables also more frequently exceeded acute-exposure limits designed to protect against respiratory problems.

Portables serve a purpose. They give schools the flexibility to handle fluctuating enrollments at a low cost. But they aren’t meant to be used indefinitely. They’re cheaply made, often have lousy HVAC systems, and fall apart over time. And yet there are portables in Chico schools that are nearly 40 years old.

My friend, the teacher with cancer, urges parents of children in portables to be attentive.

Notice the indoor air quality when you visit their classrooms. If the air has a strange smell or often seems stuffy, ask the principal to put in a work order to have it tested. Vigilant parents have the power to protect their children from contaminated classroom air. □

O’Brien’s vision for the Chico Police Department, including its reorganized administrative structure—an effort that should have taken place years ago, but was never a priority under previous poor leadership.

The last couple of Chico police chiefs were more concerned with propaganda campaigns designed to bolster the department’s budget—and line the pockets of its employees—and sustaining the department’s goodold-boy club than with the health and welfare of the community they ostensibly served. Those efforts were largely successful, as a majority of the City Council members voted in favor of raises that will cost taxpayers an additional $1.5 million over the next three years.

Keep in mind that those pay hikes were approved on the heels of the worst recession since the Great Depression, following tactics in which Chico Police Officers’ Association’s leaders attempted to hold the community hostage by refusing to patrol certain areas of the city. The combative relationship between the thugs at the union and city management and citizens was palpable for many months. Somewhere along the line, the motto “protect and serve” became little more than lip service.

As a result, the department lost the respect and trust of the community.

And that’s not something easily earned.

That means O’Brien has his work cut out for him. But to his credit, he appears to know that and has already gone about the business of rebuilding the department’s relationships with the community, from everyday citizens and businesspeople to the university and the press.

During the Police Community Advisory Board’s meeting at the Old Municipal Building last week, O’Brien revealed the details of many changes within the department. They include a wholesale restructuring of the organization to the so-called community-oriented policing model that interim Police Chief Mike Dunbaugh kicked off during his short time leading the department. The model includes an increased number of mid-level managers under a deputy chief, rather than the previous structure in which administration and operations were overseen separately by two captains.

O’Brien has fine-tuned a plan that assigns each of those mid-level administrators—lieutenants—to three distinct geographic regions of the city, thus making them more accountable and accessible to the public.

(Another lieutenant is in charge of investigations and yet another oversees administrative efforts.)

We’ve already seen the model working (see Howard Hardee’s report on page 10). In the last week, one of the lieutenants has stepped up patrols at Lower Bidwell Park, where illegal activity, including drug use and littering, has become rampant. Problems there are well beyond the scope of the city’s park rangers, especially in light of the not-so-veiled threats to those city workers. We’re pleased to see a proactive approach to policing in that beloved green space.

Other initiatives also speak to O’Brien’s commitment to the community-oriented model.

He is reintroducing the popular TARGET team—a special unit dedicated to responding to chronic neighborhood problems, for example.

He’s also bringing the department into the 21st century though a number of efforts, including procuring an app that will allow police to share information with residents and vice versa.

What we’re seeing here is progress. Much of what O’Brien is attempting to accomplish could have taken place years ago—without squeezing the taxpayers. But his predecessors didn’t have the will or the community’s best interests at heart.

In our view, the new chief is off to a good start. He seems to have assembled a strong team capable of moving the organization in the right direction. We hope to see the momentum continue. □

Re “Sucking air” (Newslines, by Howard Hardee, Aug. 20): Last week in the story on water [and the moratorium on permits for wells], one farmer showed his hand. Seth Flack complained that he has too much water and he should get special treatment. So, Mr. Flack planted nut trees along the Sacramento River. Apparently, this was not the best place for nut trees.

Who made him plant there? No one.

What we have is a small group of wealthy farmers, made wealthy by free water. They then send the crop to China, make millions every year, and have the gall to complain when

Re “The safety factor” (Editorial, Aug. 20): Couldn’t have said it better myself. Well, I could, but it takes nearly 1,500 words to do it. But yes, enough with the hand-wringing and carrying water for the Chico Police Officers’ Association. They got their headcount, and they got their raise, and for their part they’re doing a pretty convincing impression of a special interest group trying to recapture public good will through public relations, which is a good start, anyway.

But that’s their job. The purpose of the CPOA is to improve the pay, benefits and working conditions of cops in Chico. The daily media, especially television, has been guilty of ginning up this atmosphere of fear and anxiety, and have the responsibility to restore the citizens’ confidence and good will in their city. But I’m not holding my breath.

Good job to the CN&R for its consistent skepticism about the relentless drumbeat of inchoate terror that has been cynically employed to turn the city into an ATM machine for public safety personnel. That’s the media’s job; to scrutinize the conduct of our public business, and to challenge public employees on their assertions. Relying on a stackranking from the FBI to demonstrate Chico’s deterioration is the shabbiest sort of consensus manufacture.

I didn’t make it to Chico State President Paul Zingg’s convocation last week. Come to think of it, I haven’t been to one of those in years. Probably not since I was the higher-ed beat reporter at the local daily back in the day. In any event, from what I’ve read, those in attendance—mostly faculty and staff members—were shocked when Chico State’s venerable president announced this would be his last year at the helm.

But shocked—really? Zingg turned 70 years old this summer.

He also had triple-bypass surgery back in March, then a bout with kidney stones—his second, I believe. I’m not saying he doesn’t have more to give. I’m not ageist. But, look, the guy has had some serious health issues and could have retired fully vested several years go. His announcement shouldn’t have surprised anyone on campus, even though he once joked that he’d be carried out of there (presumably in a casket) someday.

I’m happy for Chico State’s chief. Leading such a large organization is tough. In my book, he’s earned his retirement. And, believe me, I’m one of the people who put him through his paces over the years. In fact, I’m quite certain I’ve interviewed him more than any other reporter.

I met Paul Zingg on Feb. 2, 2005. I’ll never forget that date, because it was the day Chico State student Matthew Carrington—a local fraternity pledge—died in an unauthorized frat house a few blocks from campus.

I’d had a long-scheduled appointment with Zingg that morning.

It was a get-together in which the two of us—me the new Chico State reporter (I’d been at the paper since 2003 and had recently switched beats) and him, the newer campus president (he’d been there for just about a year)—would get to know each other a bit.

Instead, I walked into his spacious Kendall Hall office, shook his hand, made polite conversation for five minutes, and then spent the next 55 grilling him on what he was going to do about a dead kid in a fraternity full of other Chico State students. It’d been only a few hours since he’d learned of Carrington’s death—attributed to a hazing rite.

To his credit, Zingg handled my pointed questions with aplomb, both that day and for years thereafter. He was never defensive or combative and I sensed that he cared deeply for the student body.

Sometimes, while covering the south-campus neighborhood scene for the paper, I’d run into him walking there among students, talking to them and the patrol officers attempting to keep the rowdier ones corralled.

Not everyone recognized Zingg as the university president. But the students who did weren’t afraid to chat him up. For a guy as tall he is—about 6 foot 4, I believe—Zingg’s pretty approachable.

This ink-stained wretch has few complaints with his tenure. If anything, I’d have liked for him to be less diplomatic. But that isn’t his way.

Zingg has his detractors, of course, and I cannot say their issues with him are without merit. But from a journalist’s perspective, overall, he’s been a receptive and thoughtful source through the years. Those kind of folks don’t come along every day.

Way to go, CN&R skeptics

There is an El Niño that may or may not deliver some relief from the drought, but if we flush away whatever nature brings, no good will come to us. For the last 200 years, our policies and developments have conspired to transform this valley floor from a seasonal wetland or swamp into a drained desert. They have treated rainfall as a troublesome inconvenience that needs to be flushed to the ocean. As local wells start “sucking air,” we should be focusing on more than conserving water use.

How do we divert our street and roof runoff out of storm drains and into areas for infiltration? How do we allow streams to flood their banks and spread out.

We need to focus and plan and promote individual actions and land management projects that infiltrate rainwater and recharge our aquifers in both the urban and rural landscape. Better do it fast.

Remember this Re “Casting Stone” (Letters, by Michael Jones, Aug. 20): According to Michael Jones, Chico’s city clerk has a compensation package of $200,000 year.

And we have policemen who are making upward of $150,000 year.

And I bet each of these policemen walk away with pensions worth millions considering they can retire in their early fifties. This in a city with a median household income of $43,372 a year.

In the next election, when the voters are told they must vote to raise the sales tax, I hope they remember the compensation packages of their public “servants.”

Re “Eat your vegetables and barley” (Chow, by Matthew Craggs, Aug. 20):

Thanks for featuring Vedge and mentioning vegan options!

Our local farmers grow some of the best fruit and produce in the state, yet vegan options are almost never listed on local restaurant menus—“local,” “gluten-free,” and “paleo” are much more common.

Vegetarian entrees loaded with milk, butter and eggs are not the same as vegan entrees. I maintain an online guide to Chico vegan eating (https://chicovegan. wordpress.com/restaurants), and one of my most-used phrases is: “Vegan-friendly, but not clearly labeled.”

Restaurant owners would benefit from having at least one tasty menu item clearly labeled “vegan.” One local vegan favorite is Aonami Sustainable Sushi— chef Jimmy has a clearly labeled section of delicious vegan rolls that are the equal of his traditional sushi. Other eateries in Chico are slowly making it easier to eat vegan.

Chico’s vegan eats have come a long way since the 1990s, but there is still much progress to be made. It would be much appreciated if CN&R dining reviewers would critique vegan options. In my experience, more diners are looking for plant-based dining options as trends like Meatless Monday or “veg before 6” grow nationwide. You’d be doing local readers (and the animals) a favor.

On newspapering Re “Not alt enough” (Letters, by Kathy Williams, Aug. 20): A letter writer recently labeled the CN&R an “alternative newspaper.” My thought is that today’s CN&R is, first of all, a newspaper. Yes, it is an alternative to the community’s daily newspaper, but it is far from the “here now, gone tomorrow” flimsies found in most major urban areas.

First of all, it is a member of the California Newspaper Publishers Association. Second, it is a for-profit business. Third, its staff and contributing writers are paid.

Chico has had a number of true “alternative newspapers” in its past. All are gone and most have failed. Publishing an alternative

means acquiring a pile of cash, a bunch of dedicated volunteers, hopefully a line of credit, and then running like crazy until you’re the last one in the room.

The motivation may be political, environmental, social, or most likely, a combination of all.

Sometimes, vengeance can be a great publishing motivation. In the end, though, the result is mostly always the same.

The CN&R once fit most of the descriptors presented above.

It nearly went under; instead, it surfaced—with help—as a successful enterprise. That’s why we refer to the experience as “working in the newspaper business.”

‘Give me a break!’

Re “The healing flow” (Fifteen minutes, by Vic Cantu, Aug. 13): Once again, I find myself defending science. Why on earth would you advertise for these pseudo-scientific practitioners? Bits from your article: “Recreating the flow or the right vibration, community acupuncture, doga (yoga for dogs), hypnotherapy, psychic readers, sound healers, angel readings (card readings channeled through angels), despacho shamanism, Indian pipe ceremonies, Ayurvedic diets, integrate your spirituality.” Give me a break!

There is no alternative medicine. If it’s alternative, it’s not medicine. One of the dangers with people pursuing these quack treatments is that they will shun the real ones that actually might help. Yes, medicine is not an exact science, but it is based on evidence. Treatments change because science advances.

As journalists, you bear a responsibility. Would you want your children treated by these people and not medically trained doctors?

Trumpeting his candidate Bernie Sanders, to me, is the best person to be the next president.

He voted against the Iraq War and has taken on the former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, telling him he was flat out wrong (and Greenspan later admitted he was wrong). No PACs are supporting Sanders’ run for president, and I consider him capable of taking on the “establishment” and accomplishing positive change while telling the truth and pursuing what I consider to be the important issues, including staying out of foreign wars and bringing the “middle class” back to prosperity and providing healthcare for all.

He will represent you, the 99 percent.

The media and the political pundits say he can’t win and have thus not covered him. They are giving all their attention to the unelectable Donald Trump.

Sanders is an “independent” who is taking advantage of also being a Democrat. Bernie would like a minimum of six debates, but the Democratic National Committee is dragging its feet scheduling them.

The 2016 election is probably the last time we will be able to vote for a qualified “independent” candidate representing the 99 percent—take advantage of it and vote “Bernie” He is electable.

TRIATHLETES TRIUMPH

Chico Triathlon Club member Kyle Fox was the overall winner of the Granite Bay Triathlon on Saturday, Aug. 15. The club also seized top honors at the event in the Northern California Tri Club Spring Team Championship for the second year running.

The club, which formed in 2010, sent 31 triathletes ranging in ages from 9 to 78 to compete in the triathlon and triathlon relay at the Folsom State Lake Recreation Area.

The race consists of a three-quarter-mile swim, 13 mile bike ride and 5 mile run.

Other members of the local group won awards for events in their individual age groups, as well as awards for fastest swim split and fastest bike split.

A NATURAL ACCORD

After defaulting on an $185,000 loan to the city of Chico for about a year, the Chico Creek Nature Center has agreed to a long-term repayment plan.

The center borrowed the money in 2005 to help finance construction of The Bidwell Park Interpretive Center. As with many community-oriented programs, however, the center lost a substantial sum of grant money from the city and struggled to make ends meet; in 2013, CCNC launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover the cost of educational programs.

Caitlin Riley, executive director of CCNC, said by phone that the city has reset interest on the loan. The outstanding debt is $181,000. The new agreement will carry out over the next few decades, beginning with a $600 quarterly payment and increasing from there. After five years, the city and the center will renegotiate.

PARKING GETS SMARTER

The city of Chico is nearly done installing 450 new “smart meters” capable of reading credit cards in the downtown area. The meters are located between First and Fourth streets and Salem and Wall streets.

The new meters will continue to take coin payment, and a fee of 35 cents will be added to credit card transactions “to cover the city’s processing costs,” according to an Aug. 20 press release.

Multispace credit-cardreading meters will also be installed in parking lots at First and Second and Wall streets in the next few weeks.

City staff anticipates that “there may be challenges as the new technology is deployed” and promises to work with “any member of the public who may be impacted by any such potential transitional issues,” the release reads.

Klein’s death triggered two independent student efforts to address pedestrian safety issues in the heavily student populated south-campus area, where residents say close calls are commonplace. They helped lead to a comprehensive traffic study currently being conducted by city of Chico staff, which could lead to big changes in the neighborhood in coming years.

Two of Klein’s friends, Dillon Mitchler and Shane Smith, started a petition on website Change.org calling for stop signs to replace yield signs in all residential areas of downtown Chico last March. It gathered

more than 1,200 signatures in a matter of weeks. Then, at the June 9 City Council meeting, Chico State health and community services professor Joni Meyer presented the results of two group projects done by students in her drugs and society class— another petition hand-signed by more than 500 students, and information about installing more street lights in the area.

Councilman Andrew Coolidge said it was the students’ work that led him to push for the council to take action. The topic was discussed in depth at a July 8 Internal Affairs Committee meeting, of which Coolidge is a member. And at its Aug. 4 meeting, the City Council called for the traffic study.

“I felt like, if you have 1,200 students supporting a safety measure, then that’s definitely something to take a closer look at,” said Coolidge, who initially pushed for the immediate installation of stop signs.

“I’ve been in Chico for 20-plus years and those signs never made sense to me,” he continued. “They are fine for some other neighborhoods, and they may have worked there 50 years ago or whenever they were installed, but now they’re just plain dangerous, and needed to be changed yesterday.”

As for street lights, Coolidge said he has long supported a move to LED lights, which he said are brighter, more ecofriendly, would lead to long-term savings

on power bills for the city and could also positively impact other public safety issues.

Chico Police Department Deputy Chief Dave Britt was among those who pushed for a broader study: “As a department, we advocate that any changes to traffic control systems and signage be data-based and not just kind of a knee-jerk reaction,” he explained. Britt acknowledged the entire west side of downtown, including the south-campus area and the Nord AvenueWalnut Street corridor, have a high rate of accidents compared with the volume of traffic. Another Chico State student, 18-year-old Nicholas Castellos, was killed while crossing Walnut Street at West Fifth Street on Jan. 16.

Acting Public Works Director Brendan Ottoboni, who is overseeing the traffic study, presented preliminary data to the Internal Affairs Committee and City Council showing the number of traffic accidents from 2006 to June 2015 at each intersection in the area. The most problematic spots are on Chestnut Street. At West Seventh and Chestnut streets, where Klein was killed, an estimated 2,500 vehicles pass through daily, and there have been 13 accidents there since 2006, making an average of 1.51 accidents per million vehicles. An average of 2,200 vehicles pass through West Sixth and Chestnut streets daily with 11 accidents over those years,

n unusual request made at the Butte County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday, Aug. 25, raised a number of controversial issues involving the Greenline and the county’s planning and zoning process. It also injected “a threat of litigation,” in the words of County Counsel Bruce Alpert.

Making the request was Pete Peterson, a major almond grower in the area and the owner of Chico Nut Co. Peterson also owns a large lot north of Bell Road, in an area that is called the Bell-Muir Extension (BME).

He wants the board to initiate a general-plan amendment enlarging the minimum lot size in the area.

There are 33 parcels on about 130 acres in the BME; 10 of the lots are larger than 5 acres, the rest smaller. The larger lots are located north of Bell Road, while the smaller ones border Muir Avenue to the west (see map). Together they form a buffer or transition zone between urban development to the south and farmland to the north and west. All are in the county.

Originally, under General Plan 2030, which was adopted in 2010, the area was zoned Rural Residential, which has a 5-acre minimum. The county Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors both passed the RR designation unanimously.

Two years later, however, both bodies approved amendments to the general plan changing the land-use designation to Very Low Density Residential (VLDR) 2.5, which reduced the minimum lot size by half.

She also said Klein’s and other student deaths are about more than signage and street lights, but a bigger problem—drug and alcohol abuse. She estimates an average of two students have died as a direct result of such abuse every semester since she began teaching at the university in 2012.

“Unfortunately, our memories are short,” she said. “The students don’t live here, so they get sent home in a body bag and everyone forgets about what happened.”

In comparison, the intersection at Salem and West Second streets, where traffic is controlled by a stoplight, sees an average of 15,000 vehicles daily and was the site of 19 accidents, or .37 crashes per million vehicles.

Ottoboni said the study will be done in phases. The first phase includes counting the actual number of cars, bikes and pedestrians that travel through each intersection daily. Staff also will collect verbal surveys and gather input from those who live in the area.

Ottoboni said he hopes to have much of this data collected to present to City Council on Oct. 6.

Future phases will further examine signage, lighting, sidewalks and parking, and explore costs and funding mechanisms for improvements. The ultimate idea is to make south-campus thoroughfares into “complete streets,” a term Ottoboni used to describe modern roads that take pedestrians, cyclists and motorists—as well as driving and parking needs—into equal account.

Chico State professor LaDona Knigge of the university’s Geography and Planning Department has already offered her and her students’ services for the study, Ottoboni said, noting Knigge and her classes also participated in a traffic study for the Chapman-Mulberry neighborhood.

“We want to reach out to the university as much as possible because the student population has such a significant impact in that area,” he said. “This is a perfect example of something the city and the university can do together, and we hope to work with students to come up with some solutions.”

Getting warmer Chico Heat appoint local coach as manager, collegiate baseball league takes shape

F

red Ludwig’s known for months that the Chico Heat and highlevel summertime baseball is returning to Chico, but wasn’t planning on putting his name in the hat to become the team’s field manager. At least not until Pat Gillick, a National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, stepped into his office about three weeks ago and asked him to.

The head baseball coach at Pleasant Valley High School was taken off guard and maybe a little star-struck: “I just said, ‘Absolutely.’”

Ludwig was introduced as the Chico Heat’s field manager on Tuesday (Aug. 25) during a press conference at Golden Valley Bank on Cohasset Road. Heat General Manager Hunter Hampton said the right candidate needed to be college-educated, successful on the field, and have established connections with college baseball coaches across the country.

“We also wanted someone who understands small-town living,” Hampton said, “someone who really gets what Chico is about.”

Ludwig fits that description. He was born and raised in Paradise, is enshrined in the Paradise High School Athletic Hall of Fame and, in his third and final year playing for Chico State in 1991, was voted

team captain. He’s coached every year since, mentoring hundreds of players during his five years with the top local American Legion team, the Chico Nuts, seven years with Paradise High School and the past five with Pleasant Valley.

“I’m a Chico guy,” Ludwig said during the press conference.

“That’s the biggest thing.”

News broke last year that, in June

2016, the Chico Heat will return to Chico State’s Nettleton Stadium as part of a new collegiate wood-bat circuit, the Great West League, and play the first summer baseball there since the Chico Outlaws in 2011.

Steve Nettleton, the supermarket magnate and donor for whom the stadium is named—and owner of the original Heat—is partnering with Gillick, former general manager of the Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies.

But the new Heat will be markedly different from the previous Heat and Outlaws teams, which were both part of professional independent leagues not affiliated with Major League Baseball. The forthcoming iteration, rather, will be composed entirely of unpaid players in the NCAA system.

The Great West League is still taking shape. Four of six teams

have officially announced their participation, including the nearby Marysville Gold Sox, along with the Lodi Crushers and the Portland Pickles. The 10-week, 60-game schedule will introduce college players to a daily grind similar to that of professional baseball.

Ludwig noted that the league’s tentative schedule has the Heat playing an evening game in Portland and then traveling to Lodi, more than 600 miles south, to play again the next night.

The recruitment process has already begun with the help of longtime MLB scout Wayne Morgan, and it’s more than watching players on the field, Ludwig said.

“I’ve talked to about 10 kids across the nation already,” he said.

The roster will include 30 players.

“I get into their background a little bit. I’ve called a few high school coaches to get a feel for their character.”

He’s looking for players who will immerse themselves in the community and the experience of playing in front of big crowds. “I want them to relish Chico and to get involved,” he said. “When a kid comes up and asks them to sign a ball, I want them to do that. They need to do that.”

Just as many baseball fans are anticipating the Heat’s first game on June 3, Ludwig is, too.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all of you out at the yard,” he said.

ANTI-SMOKING BILLS PROGRESS

A package of six anti-smoking bills authored by Democratic lawmakers recently advanced in the California Legislature. It includes measures to raise the smoking age to 21 and add e-cigarettes to the legal definition of tobacco products.

The Senate Committee on Public Health and Developmental Services approved the package on Aug. 19, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The bill that would designate vaping devices as tobacco products—therefore subjecting them to the same restrictions in public spaces—was proposed by Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco).

It also would allow for sting operations to catch retailers who sell e-cigs to minors and require child-resistant packaging.

The four additional bills would: expand the definition of smoke-free workplaces; require all schools be designated smoke-free areas; allow local jurisdictions to tax tobacco products; and create an annual Board of Equalization tobacco licensing fee program.

E-CIGS SAFER?

A UK-based review of recent literature on the use of e-cigarettes finds that vaping is 95 percent less harmful than smoking regular cigarettes.

The review, commissioned by Public Health England, challenges widespread media reports that e-cigs are as dangerous to health as traditional smoking tobacco, according to Medical News Today. “While vaping may not be 100 percent safe, most of the chemicals causing smoking-related disease are absent and the chemicals that are present pose limited danger,” the authors write.

The review also concludes that e-cigs contribute to falling smoking rates. Of England’s 2.6 million adult e-cig users, nearly all are either current or ex-tobacco smokers who are using vaping devices to quit traditional cigarettes or avoid picking up the habit again.

State health officials have confirmed the second recent case of human plague, this time contracted by a visitor from Georgia who vacationed at Yosemite National Park and the Sierra National Forest in early August.

The announcement comes less than two weeks after the California

Department of Public Health

confirmed that a child who camped at Yosemite had the disease. Plague is carried by rodents, such as squirrels and chipmunks, and their fleas, which can transmit the infection to humans, according to a CDPH press release. The presence of rodent-borne plague has been detected at two campgrounds in Yosemite, but the “risk to humans remains low,” the release states.

Upon returning to Georgia, the most recently infected visitor received prompt medical attention and has recovered from the illness.

Benaron is medical director at Far Northern Regional Center, a referral point for individuals with developmental disabilities. North State pediatricians often send patients to her for diagnosis, because autism spectrum disorder (ASD) falls squarely within her realm of expertise (in fact, she’s written a book on the subject: Autism in the Biographies of Disease series published by ABC-CLIO.) “Each time something comes out, it comes out under this banner like, ‘This is the answer,’” she said, “and it continues to be, ‘This is [just] another volley in the number of studies that are trying to answer this question.’”

Case in point are two recent reports that drew splashy headlines—one regarding the

prevalence of autism, the second regarding the cause.

The first study, conducted by scientists at Penn State, attributes a great proportion of rising autism rates to changes in the way the condition is identified rather than greater prevalence. By analyzing information culled by tracking children in special education classes, researchers determined that around two-thirds of the rise in autism diagnoses between 2000 and 2010 was due to the widespread reclassification of students from intellectual disability to autism.

The Penn State researchers’ summation was more technical and nuanced than the media coverage, which latched onto the idea that the increase in prevalence is due to changing diagnoses.

Nonetheless, the study leaves a distinct impression that cuts against common wisdom and well-known statistics—namely that autism has become more common, from 1 in 150 children to 1 in 60 during this research period.

“I just don’t think that there’s any expert on autism spectrum disorders, in the school systems or [among] people that do these evaluations all the time, who doesn’t

believe there’s a true increase,” Benaron said.

The second study looks at the genetic roots of autism. By tracking one of the approximately 1,000 gene mutations traced to ASD, scientists have gained additional insight into one physiological mechanism behind the condition.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine had a technical and specific summation, reflecting the limited scope. One media headline, “New Breakthrough in What Causes Autism,” is technically true, but also an overstatement based on past research Benaron has read in depth.

“All this is more information to fill in some of the gaps in the story,” she said.

“Even though there were gaps in the story, they were mechanistic gaps; no one that was following this literature ever doubted that it would be figured out at some point.

This is just adding more information to a framework.”

Benaron is not criticizing the validity or value of the genetic study, but rather believes that “the more information that gets added to the framework, the more you believe the framework.” She simply pointed out that autism’s mystery hasn’t been unlocked by understanding this single problem (a “missense mutation”) in the creation of a single gene (related to UBE3A, an enzyme that tags proteins for destruction).

autism—which, according to Dr. Eric Neal, may actually relate to the prevalence issue.

“Part of the rise in autism is the rise in awareness of it, better study and better understanding of it,” Neal said. He’s a pediatrician at Oroville Hospital who has been practicing since 1996. “I’m also seeing a lot more autism than I was in the past, too, but it’s so hard to quantify. I don’t think it’s that we went from 1 in 5,000 [the CDC statistic from 1975] to 1 in 68 ... but that we have more tools to pick it up and more understanding and awareness of autism over the last 10 years or so.”

Benaron explained that prevalence data has been recorded three ways: educational classifications, medical diagnoses and CDC studies. The new study highlights the subjective nature of identifying autism, based on who makes the assessment, but Benaron says using special education data as a measure of diagnostic accuracy raises red flags.

“Almost all those kids [with ASD] have anxiety; almost all those kids, if they’re not intellectually disabled, will have learning disabilities in the sense that they often will have lower verbal-related skills,” she said.

But even taking the study at face value—accepting that 65 percent of the increase in autism diagnoses come from reclassification—that leaves 34 percent of the increase coming from autism increasing.

“OK, that’s still 10 times [greater in a decade],” Benaron said. “That’s still a public health

emergency, even if you take their lowest estimate of kids with autism spectrum disorders.”

The research into genetic factors of autism presents hope for more specific approaches toward identification and care. The latter most excites Neal, as a physician on the front lines with a dearth of medical therapies.

“It’s great to screen and diagnose,” he said, “but I think the treatment end is the most important thing. … If there was something down the line where you could actually cure autism or at least treat autism better than the options we have now—we don’t have medications—I would think [that advance] would be the biggest help from research.”

Benaron said further research might help answer “is there a special intervention that might help this specific group of kids” because so many separate mutations cause autism disorders. “The other hope,” she continued, “is once we have genetic information to help us categorize, then maybe we’ll be able to get better information about prevalence.” □

Renowned scientists say revolutionary shifts are necessary to feed people into the future by

ow do you make sure billions of people

around the world have access to food?

You start a revolution.

At least that’s what two leading U.S. scientists argue in a new report. Feeding people will require cleaner energy, smarter farming and women’s rights, but also a “fundamental cultural change,” according to UC Berkeley professor and researcher John Harte, and Paul Ehrlich, president of the Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford University.

“What is obvious to us is ... that if humanity is to avoid a calamitous loss of food security, a fast, society-pervading sea-change as dramatic as the first agricultural revolution will be required,” they wrote in their recent report in the International Journal of Environmental Studies.

The amount of humans on Earth is growing—projections point to an extra 2.5 billion people by 2050.

But tangled within the problem of more hungry mouths is environmental degradation, social injustice and humans pushing toward the very boundaries of the planet when it comes to resources such as food, water and energy, according to Ehrlich and Harte.

For many people across the world, growing, buying or finding food is a daily struggle. More than 800 million people are estimated to be malnourished, according to the United Nations.

Billions don’t have stable, secure access to food.

“Some people say the whole problem is too many people and other people say it’s misdistribution of the crops we grow,” Ehrlich said in an interview. “They’re both right, but this can’t be fixed by dealing with

only one end of the problem.”

Scientists for too long have been looking at how to feed the world in “fragments,” Ehrlich said.

“Some look at solving food problems with crops grown in higher temperatures; some look at reducing waste,” he said. “It’s crystal clear that none of the things that need to be done are being done on a scale that would be helpful.”

It’s not just about pumping out more crops or reducing the amount of people.

“Planning for a sustainable and effective food production system will surely require heeding constraints from nature,” Ehrlich and Harte wrote.

They argue that economic equality, popula-

tion growth and environmental health are all linked. Governments must address the whole system to avoid future famine.

This means limiting greenhouse gases that warm the planet, avoiding biodiversity losses and reducing populations, they say. It means cutting back on all of the pesticides and antibiotics used to grow food. It means moving climate change to the top of political agendas and ending incentives to pull fossil fuels out of the ground.

As the planet’s population grows, environmental issues will grow too, Ehrlich said.

“We need to get a grip on population,” Harte added. But addressing climate change will be a “critical issue.”

“Nothing is worse for future food security than a future climate with more extreme events like droughts, floods,” Harte said.

Harte pointed to the ongoing California drought as an example. A UC Davis report

in June estimated that, in 2015, the drought would cost the California farm industry $2.7 billion and 18,000 jobs.

Solutions, like challenges, are intertwined Ehrlich and Harte say.

But they exist. Ehrlich said a good start in addressing population growth would be full women’s rights, including access to contraceptives and abortions. For agriculture, it’s a “big shift” toward organic farming, getting rid of large industrial farms that rely on pesticides.

Harte said curbing continued climate change has two natural solutions: the wind and the sun. He said expanding wind and solar farms combined with greater efficiency in electricity use is entirely possible.

“Germany is much less sunny than most of the United States, and they’re approaching almost half of all electricity production from renewables,” Harte said. “There’s no reason we can’t, too.”

Underlying all this, the two say, is a fundamental shift in people’s values, including a turn away from everything being driven by financial interests. Instead, they write, society’s focus should shift to “resilience, a striving for virtue, equitable distribution, and extreme vigilance to insure that governance is working in parallel, not in opposition, to achieve these goals.”

In other words, a revolution.

Ehrlich and Harte are optimistic about the solutions. But when it comes to the full-scale revolution, not so much.

“U.S. Congress is ruled by a majority that doesn’t want to listen to facts.... Most don’t believe in science,” Harte said. “They don’t understand the magnitude of the threat civili-

zation is facing.

“If they listened to engineers and scientists and did the right thing, I’d be optimistic.

There are solutions out there.” □

passion for piggies Anita Jacobson’s Durham farm is home home to a 70-pound turtle, two cattle dogs and several alpacas. But it’s when visitors are invited to take a seat on the ground in the pig pen that the real fun begins. Slowly but steadily, the friendly creatures make their way over, moist snouts pulsating.

Jacobson started the operation, California Mini Pigs, five years ago. Today, it’s home to some 50 pigs—including the cleverly named Miranda Hambert, Reba Porkintyre and Jimmy Dean—that she raises for adoption and education. Jacobson founded a mini-pig breeders’ co-op, which has grown to represent 73 breeders from across the country over the past 11 months. Pig playdates can be arranged by appointment, and Jacobson estimates she and the pigs welcome 200 to 300 visitors a year. They’re sweet animals that come in all different shapes and sizes.

People can be so misguided about them. They make great pets, because some people are allergic to cats and dogs. And, they don’t bark all night. They’ve helped veterans with post-traumatic stress [disorder]. Pigs gravitate to people with disabilities, especially children.

They’re pretty intuitive. People have to come interact if they want to understand these animals.

They’re changing lives.

What are misconceptions about pigs?

Even though they’re born as these tiny little piglets, they’re going to grow, usually to the size of a beagle—that’s comparable. They’re also cuddly. They like to sit on the couch and watch TV with you.

Pigs need mud, not to be treated as purses. They’re born anemic, and mud provides sunscreen, and bug protection. Pigs need dirt.

Remember that, if you want a picture-perfect house pet. They will tear up your yard, so don’t let them go into your perfect rose garden. They’re like a 2-year-old child you’ll have for the next 15 years. Only one out of every four or five groups that come here to adopt a pig ends up doing it. We want them to go to good homes, forever homes they can have after the fad is over.

“Clean hippie.” I’m sorry if this offends any of my hippie friends, but isn’t that an oxymoron? Regardless, I saw that phrase tacked to a booth at the Thursday Night Market last week and it made me smile. So I stopped.

The booth was called The Body Emporium and it boasted handcrafted organic skin care products. On display were all manner of soaps—in lots of different colors and scents—along with body butters and sugar scrubs.

(I love me a good sugar scrub!) When the crowd died down for a minute, I was able to chat it up with the ladies behind the business, Tori Standke and Cynthia Weems. Lovely ladies.

It turns out their story is quite unique and inspiring. Each of them started out alone—Standke had Clean Hippie Body Care and Weems had Sudsy Sorto Sisters’ Soap Co. And they both started out because they found something lacking in the commercial world of body care products.

“I have dry skin, so I started buying sugar scrubs,” Standke said. “There were no commercial products that were working that well for me. So, I started making my own. People liked it, so I started selling it.”

Weems’ inspiration was a little different. “I found out what was really in soaps and detergents,” she said. “For example, Dove—it’s marketed as a body bar. That’s because legally, according to the FDA, they’re not allowed to call it soap.”

She was also inspired in coming up with her business name, which still adorns the soaps The Body Emporium sells. “It’s a tribute to my sister,” she said. “There were three of us—my maiden name is Sorto—and now there are two.”

In October, Weems plans to create a special purple soap in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in honor of her sister, Angelica Weems, who was killed last fall.

Standke agreed, adding that they’ve both gotten a lot of support from friends and family.

“I like supporting other locals, too,” Weems said. “When there’s something I don’t make, I’ll buy from another local business. We understand how it is to have your own business going.”

Scientists explain why our memories are so inaccurate

I’ve been re-experiencing my youth lately as movies that replay at random times inside my own head.

Sometimes, it’s the one where I’m rushed to the emergency room, age 10, after accidentally stabbing myself in the guts while climbing the spiky gate in front of my childhood home. Or when my bike-riding brother was hit by a car. Or when my father, home from the hospital, gathered his children in the back bedroom to tell us that our cancer-stricken mother, age 45, had “gone home to God.” It’s not surprising that my brain films usually contain highly emotional or fear-charged content, since those are ones we all are said to recall most vividly, and with the greatest detail.

But recently I’ve wondered: Are these memories even accurate?

Consider the Brian Williams episode.

If you discard the notion that he lied outright, the former NBC news anchor’s inability to distinguish fact from fiction in recounting his 2003 helicopter-in-Iraq tale received a near-universal shrug from memory scientists, if not media pundits, who said the occurrence was not that big a deal. Turns out, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton—to name just a few White House types—have all been caught on tape merging an emotional tale from the past with what’s known as a “prestige enhanced memory distortion.”

But when New York Times media critic David Carr, 58, died in February less than a week after Williams went off the air, I took About the author:

it as evidence that it was time to explore the topic of memory. I knew the renowned columnist and former alternative weekly editor a bit, and his newsroom death sent me back to his 2008 memoir, The Night of the Gun. In it, Carr investigated his own volatile life’s events and basically discovered that his memories were vastly unreliable.

“Memory,” he concluded, “uses the building blocks of fiction—physical detail, arc, character, and consequence—to help us explain ourselves to ourselves and to others.”

Well, the possibility that our memories suffer from truthiness seems especially weighty today, what with the world’s population living longer than ever, baby boomers confronting age-related memory loss in record numbers and disorders like Alzheimer’s disease readying to avalanche the health care system.

There’s no doubt that the human brain— and how it encodes, stores and retrieves infor-

mation—has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years and is surely one of the most remarkably complex marvels to be found in the universe. The memory is genius, serving as a GPS (with astonishing spatial navigation capacity), interactive Rolodex (cross-indexing people, places and things with dexterity) and personal encyclopedia (sparing us from having to learn the same things over and over).

But even given all that—just how flawed are our memories?

Is it possible that some of our most treasured ones never really happened? Can false memories really be planted inside our brains? Finally, in this age of exponential selfdocumentation, will our memories’ fallibility become more or less relevant?

For answers, I checked in with experts at UC Davis—home to many of the world’s top neuroscientists, psychologists and academics in the realm of recall.

And you’ll be surprised at what they had to say about your memory.

“The currents are very, very tiny,” said Ranganath. “But when there’s populations of tens of thousands of cells operating in sync,” he says, you can see patterns of brain activity.

Ranganath—a charismatic young scientist who loves Twitter, guitar bands (“noise rock, math rock”) and cognitive neuroscience—won a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship recently for his work on Alzheimer’s disease.

“We’re trying to figure out how different brain areas code for different pieces of information,” he explains. In addition to the EEG, Ranganath’s crew uses eye-tracking techniques and fMRIs (functional magnetic

resonance imaging) to track areas of activity in the brain so as to better learn how it files and retrieves information.

There are multiple institutions at UC Davis that research the mind and memory, with authorities of all kinds laboring in each one. But there’s something they all seem to agree on: Memories are not as accurate as most of us believe they are.

Basically, every time a person recalls an experience, that memory is opened up for potential change. In remembering, you are actually reconstructing a memory.

Once an event is over, it’s gone, says Ranganath. “All you have is the story you created. It’s more like bits of sights, sounds and

words stored in different parts of the brain that you put together into a story.

“You ask anybody who does memory work and they’ll tell you that,” he says. “Nothing’s true in memory.”

‘how’ parts.” One half concerns itself with information about people and things, and the other is devoted to the context in which you encounter those people and things.

“When you track different features of memories, there are parts that track the objective part of what really happened [who and what], and then there’s brain areas that follow much more the mental construction [when, where, how]—the story we tell ourselves.”

The later realm, with the context, is where the brain gets a bit creative in recall, and tends to generate a “story” around what actually happened.

When I mention to Ranganath that I’d often experienced a memory from childhood as a video, he agrees that’s how most people think it works: The mind records an event, then plays it back.

But that’s wrong, he says.

“It’s not like you’re pulling a book off the shelf and putting it back on the shelf,” he said. “It’s more like pulling it off, doing a little bit of scribbling in it, then putting it back.”

And what about out-and-out memory failures, regardless of our tendency to “reconstruct” some of the context?

Memory can fall short for various reasons, he explained. Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, stroke, brain trauma—all can seriously disrupt recall processes. And plenty of people experience run-of-the-mill memory failure simply because they didn’t pay enough attention at the time of “encoding,” when the brain takes the first step in processing a new memory.

But simply getting older is the main culprit when it comes to most failing memories.

In normal aging, the hippocampus shrinks naturally, resulting in an increased loss of details, such as names or where you last placed an object (like your keys).

Is there hope for the average person facing memory loss due to aging?

Ranganath’s advice is simple: Make sure to get exercise (30 minutes a day), try to get enough sleep and reduce chronic stress.

“Those are as good as we have right now,” he shrugs. “Our brain cells require energy to do what they do, and you want to be able to deliver that as quickly as possible.

A brain that can rapidly get the glucose it needs—that brain has the advantage.”

Still, for most people, memory “improves until you hit college age,” he says. The professor holds his hand up high, as if it’s an airplane that’s taken flight. “Then it starts to decline,” he laughs. “From 30 on, it’s …”

Famous blue Icee When you were 5 years old, you got lost in the shopping mall. Remember? Your mom gave you some money to buy a blue Icee, you ran ahead and somehow got turned around. This elderly Chinese lady found you, right? Then your mom appeared and took you to get the Icee.

The above is a fictional tale, spun by experimental psychologist Beth Loftus, one of the world’s leading authorities on memory. Loftus, now a professor of psychology and professor of law at UC Irvine, has testified in hundreds of courtrooms, mostly for the defense in criminal cases, as an expert on the human mind’s ability to distort memories.

Loftus invented the “lost in the mall” story—and many other such narratives—to demonstrate that she could implant false memories in human minds. The result: She could. By merely suggesting the “lost” scenario to 24 adults, six came to fully believe that they’d actually been lost in the mall.

“We can easily distort memories and implant memories,” Loftus said flat out.

“There is no question that memories can be contaminated.”

In fact, Loftus has a three-step “recipe” for how to plant a fake memory, whether purposefully or not. (Hint: It’s not how

Leonardo DiCaprio did it in Inception.) First, you must possess the subject’s trust. Second, you plant the seed of an incident with specific detail (like the blue Icee). Third, you coax the subject to imagine the scene unfolding.

In the mid-1980s and early ’90s, the recipe was what some therapists unknowingly followed to “recover” incest memories from their clients’ childhoods. Loftus and others eventually proved that many of these recollections were false and had been unwittingly “implanted.”

Her work has perhaps a more verifiable parallel in mice.

Just last March, French neuroscientists successfully implanted false memories into the brains of sleeping mice, confirming findings from previous studies. Using electrodes to stimulate and monitor the activity of nerve cells in the mice, they created fake memories that changed mice behavior when they awoke.

Locally, UC Davis neuroscientist Brian Wiltgen has done similar work, using light to actually erase specific memories in mice (as with that memory-erasing stick in Men in Black, I imagine).

Another local expert in the recall field is Jianjian Qin, a Sacramento State psychology professor who studies the mechanisms of memory in humans. Qin (who studied at UC Davis under psychologist Gail S. Goodman, another local memory guru) conducted research that indicated it was indeed possible to get adults to believe an event occurred in their childhood that actually did not. His work, co-published in 2008 with others in The Journal of Experimental Psychology, went on to show that people are basically no good at differentiating between their “fake” and “real” memories.

“Confidence does not equate with accuracy,” Qin said.

“If you have an eyewitness sitting there in a courtroom, pointing to the defendant, saying, ‘He’s the one,’ that’s the most con-

vincing, powerful evidence you can have,” said Qin. But it’s often not good evidence, he said.

The Innocence Project (a nonprofit legal organization dedicated to upending guilty verdicts with genetic evidence) found that more than 70 percent of convictions overturned through DNA testing were based on eyewitness testimony.

Qin conducts a basic exercise in his cognitive psychology class at Sac State. “I ask them to remember the last time they had a fight with their significant other,” he said.

“Then I say, ‘How many of you remember something that happened in a different way than your significant other did?’”

All the hands go up, he laughed.

“At some level,” he said, “people know memory is not always trustworthy.”

According to Ranganath, the fallibility of our recall system is not a flaw, just a fact.

“Even when people think they’re telling you what actually happened, they’re making it up,” he said. “And you have to. If you didn’t do that, you’d have a memory disorder.”

Ranganath believes our brains developed the way they did to best “predict our future based on our past.”

“It’s not like our brains evolved to remember with precision a 16th birthday party or a first date or something,” he said. “Those things don’t give you much survival power.”

Ranganath theorizes that the human brain is simply not designed to enable us to accurately remember each and every detail about events that are nonessential from an evolutionary or “survival” standpoint. However, brain functions and memories that enhance our ability to adapt and survive—say, by enabling us to size up an individual or situation that may pose a threat—tend to be more truthful.

“What gives you survival power is the ability to use information to do things in the future that are adaptive.

“Our brains are designed to take experiences we have and strip them like somebody might strip a car,” he said. And then figure out, “How can I use this in my world?”

The future of memory Each of us has two selves, writes Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman. The esteemed behavioral economist used an infamous 2010 TED Talk to unpack how our “experiencing self” differs from our “remembering self.”

“There’s a difference between being happy in your life and being happy with your life,” said the author of Thinking, Fast and Slow. He described how the self “which does the living” (the experiencing self) is completely different than the self that “maintains the story of our life” (the remembering self).

The experiencing self lives in the present, he said. The remembering self compiles

“stories” we reconstruct from our less-thantrustworthy memories for future reference.

Kahneman’s theory manages to inspire a thoroughly modern question: How might social media—with its 24/7 ability to document what we are experiencing—impact our individual and collective recall going into the future?

In other words, will it matter that we remember poorly if there’s backup evidence as to what really happened on Facebook or Instagram?

Jesse Drew, a self-described “social media fanatic” who teaches media archeology as an associate professor of technocultural studies at UC Davis, thinks the answer is equal parts yes and no.

The most accurate way of digging up history, i.e., remembering the narrative of our past events, used to be through people’s correspondence and personal diaries, he said. But both these modes are “almost dead,” replaced by Facebook and social media.

“As we all know, Facebook is PR,” he said.

“It’s used primarily to boast and show off the good side of things. That’s not very helpful when you’re trying to uncover what really happened.”

Still, Drew believes the technology may hold its own cure. There’s a tendency, especially among the young, to engage in “memory testing,” he said. And the trend may catch fire enough to aid our collective memory going forward.

“People throw out a memory of an event on social media, and people chime in and say, ‘Yes, it happened that way,’ or ‘No, it didn’t happen that way really, but I remember this,’” he said. “Social media doesn’t have to be PR. It can actually help hone your memory.”

Drew said he’s seen a tendency, too, toward young people using social media for oral histories and to build “memory sites.” He referenced the many Facebook pages now dedicated to displaying collective memories, for example, of the ever-gentrifying Mission District in San Francisco, where he has a personal history.

“People are starting to preserve memories more and test memories with other people,” he said. “There are a lot of great history projects out there.”

When asked for thoughts about science’s ability to “incept,” or implant, memories in human minds, Drew said it’s been there, done that.

Will it matter that we remember poorly if there’s backup evidence as to what really happened on Facebook or Instagram?

“The Nazis knew that, too,” he said.

“History is what people write about history. It’s not really what happened.”

Acutely aware of the failures of memory since his own mother suffers from Alzheimer’s, Drew encourages his young students to dig up some history of their own, find the oldest member of their extended family, “sit down and interview them” about their life while it’s possible. If some of the memories are not entirely accurate, he said, so be it.

“Video is cheap,” he said, “and you can counter the fluff of Facebook with deeper storytelling and oral histories. … I think it’s starting to swing this way. People want more authenticity, a more in-depth understanding of their world and the people in their lives.”

You must remember this In the spirit of memory testing, I sought the help of my sister and brothers. I asked them to describe the details about that shared, traumatic event from our childhood that I mentioned earlier: the one where we were told our mother had died.

It turned out our memories varied, but only very little.

It happened in daylight, we all agreed.

The sun poured in through the louvered windows in the back bedroom, where my father asked his six children, all under the age of 12, to gather. Our grandmother and an older cousin were also present, though a few of us don’t remember these two in attendance. My brothers recall spatial aspects, like where they were seated in the room, while my sister and I do not. We all remember our father delivering the awful news that our mother was never coming home again. We all recall crying together as a family. I’m the only one with a memory of my father’s exact words (“Your mother has gone home to God”), though after researching this story I realize that maybe the writer in me “reconstructed” the memory over the years with added dialogue from our Catholic upbringing.

After sharing his memory, one of my brothers thanked me for dredging up his recall on this defining moment in our lives—“thanks, this has been healthy for me”—and, like a key in a lock, his words illuminated a paradox that had been hiding from me.

There’s something more essential than the veracity of old memories. It’s the importance of recalling them, however reconstructed, with others, especially loved ones, in the present.

In The Art of the Novel, Milan Kundera writes: “There would seem to be nothing more obvious, more tangible and palpable than the present moment. And yet it eludes us completely. All the sadness of life lies in that fact.”

Or maybe our remembering selves don’t deserve that much credit. Perhaps it is the simple fact of our existence that we must struggle so fervently to experience life more frequently in the “tangible and palpable” here and now. Ω

City of Chico NOTICE OF PUBLIC WORKSHOP ESPLANADE CORRIDOR IMPROVEMENT STUDY

The City of Chico Public Works Department-Engineering Division is hosting a public workshop to gain valuable input from the community regarding the Esplanade Corridor Improvement Study. The Study generally focuses on the potential transportation and traffic safety improvements that could be installed along the Esplanade between Memorial Way and 11th Avenue. The purpose of the study is to engage the public in determining a package of roadway improvements for this key transportation corridor in the City which serves many trip purposes and modes. The study’s objective is to address traffic safety and operational concerns, enhance the corridor with complete street features, provide more facilities and safety for bicyclists and pedestrians while keeping the integrity of the “Boulevard” design and existing community character, and maintain traffic flow. Ultimately, the study will recommend improvements which will be reviewed for adoption by the City Council. With City Council approval, the resultant study will serve as a guiding document for grant applications to fund recommended improvements.

these issues in an entertainment setting can be the best way to get people talking,” said Bell, praising his forebears like Chris Rock, Joan Rivers, Richard Pryor and George Carlin. “It’s like when Chris Rock did his famous bit about ‘black people vs. niggers,’ it gives people the right to talk about these things.

“To me, starting a conversation is the most important thing,” Bell said. “One of the best responses I’ve ever seen was in Portland; I overheard two guys walking out and one said, ‘That was the best comedy show I’ve ever seen,’ and his friend said, ‘What? That was the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’

“And I can live with that,” he continued. “If 50 percent of the audience love what I say and 50 percent hate it, then I know they’re going to walk out that door and have a conversation.”

The conversation Bell hopes to inspire involves black and white perspectives on racial issues, and the understanding that America has historically been—and largely remains—an intrinsically racist society. Bell noted topics like white privilege and police prejudice against people of color have just risen to mainstream prominence, but that “black people have been talking about these things for a long, long time.

“For many white Americans, discussion of social issues in America is kind of overpowered by this patriotism and pride, and with that pride comes the

inability to acknowledge our nation’s shortcomings,” Bell said. “America may very well be the best country in the world to live in, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have its flaws. People feel like they have to believe in this either/or version of America.”

Bell’s previous foray into television lasted two seasons, and he has a new show—a race and travel docu-series called The United Shades of America— coming to CNN in 2016. In the meantime, shorter Shades segments will appear as part of CNN’s other programming. The first, which featured Bell interviewing presidential hopefuls, checking out livestock and eating fried foods at the Iowa State Fair, premiered last Tuesday (Aug. 18). It was immediately deemed “racist” by followers of conservative blog Newsbusters.

“Now that is one of the softest and fluffiest pieces I’ve ever done on TV,” Bell fired back on his own blog (at wka maubell.com). “That ending is positively adorable. But that isn’t stopping the Right Wingnuts from filling up my Twitter feed with accusations of me being racist. The funny thing is that I was actually worried that people would think that the piece was too soft. If this piece was racist then I can’t wait to see how people take the actual show, because it goes way harder than ‘Ku Klux Lambs.’

The three women have distinct and very different styles. Thanks to CAC Director Klint Kettell’s excellent mounting of the show, they fit together beautifully, not complementing each other so much as amplifying each other’s uniqueness.

Another interesting aspect of the exhibit are the three time frames they represent. For Steel, the show is a retrospective encompassing her more than 70 years of creating art, with one piece dating from 1945.

Pierce’s works are more recent, all from the last decade or so, and, as I mentioned, Mitchell’s are recent.

Pierce is a master watercolorist. “Watercolor,” she writes in her artist’s statement, “is the most versatile of all the painting media,” a statement her pictures uphold brilliantly. They tend to be large renderings of natural environments—she loves the dramatic light and colors of the Southwest—but for her they are really about “the realness of color relationships and intensities, shapes that change and merge, resulting in abstractions of the environment.”

The titular subjects of some of her paintings—the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Chicago at night—are nearly unrecognizable, having been largely subsumed into Pierce’s vivid, impressionistic interplay of shapes and colors. They make no statements, other than to convey her delight in the landscape and the joy she feels in creating these things of beauty.

Like Pierce’s paintings here, Mitchell’s are in a single style and medium. She makes smallish paintings in thickly applied oil paints, called impasto, all in the same intensely colorful style.

Her subjects have varied, but in recent years she’d been painting Sacramento Valley agricultural scenes—rice fields, wetlands, orchards with mountains in the background. A couple of years ago, on a trip to San Francisco, she realized she wanted to shift her focus to the city, a place she had always loved.

This exhibit is her first major showing of the San Francisco series. She was glad to have the

deadline, she says, because it made her work overtime to get them done. Sometimes she woke at 2 a.m. and started painting.

These pieces differ from the ag scenes in their use of even brighter, more vivid colors and their chopped-up and reassembled San Francisco scenes, as if viewed through a kaleidoscope. There’s a dream-like quality to them, such that images of familiar places— Chinatown, for example—take on an almost hallucinatory aspect.

As might be expected of a retrospective covering seven decades, Steel’s paintings comprise a melange of styles and mediums.

Most of them are abstracts, or a combination of figures and abstract shapes and colors, but some of the pieces, like the massive “Train in the Night,” from 1965, have strong expressionist elements. Although there is little that’s realistic about the piece, its shapes and colors evoke the sense of a huge machine barreling through the night.

When I was admiring a small etching from 1969 called “Approaching Storm,” Steel told me about carving it while visiting Santa Barbara. Her husband was in a meeting near the shore, so she took her tools and went to the beach. As the title suggests, a storm was coming in; the waves were rising, the palm trees were swaying, and it looked like rain, but she kept scratching away. She wasn’t about to waste time, storm or no storm.

As this exhibit demonstrates, all three of these women have that kind of passion. □

END OF AN ERA

During its 1970s and ’80s heyday, LaSalles was what was then known as a “fern bar,” which was apparently what fancy old people called upscale pick-up joints. (We imagine all kindsa kinky things happened—or at least started—there back in the day.) The venerable club moved on to become a nightlife hotspot for a much younger crowd in the years that followed, and is hosting a number of special nights of live music to commemorate its final couple of weeks before closing. Saturday, Aug. 29, features reunion of Mother Hips contemporaries Buffalo Creek, former LaSalles regulars who haven’t played a show since 2007. Wake of the Dead opens.

class fighting skills have been implanted (via a topsecret CIA “experiment”). And it has Kristen Stewart as Phoebe Larson, who is Mike’s by astonishingly loyal live-in girlfriend Juan-Carlos and a feisty scrapper with a few Selznick secrets of her own.

The ditzy stoner intermittently morphing into a lethal warrior— that’s the film’s chief selling point and the cornerstone of its darkly dramatic comedy. But that central premise also yields up a wildly convoluted American Ultra starring Jesse plot involving intra-agency rivalries Eisenberg and Kristen and secret paramilitary schemes at stewart. Directed the CIA. Unavoidably, some frenzied

Rated R. all that into a very brisk and lively 95-minute package. That pell-mell pacing works to the benefit of Max Landis’ rambunctious screenplay, both as a reflection of its freaky dark humor and as a farcical counterforce to its darker, scattershot implications. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that Eisenberg and Stewart give strong, credible performances in roles that are as improbable as the plot that made their existence necessary.

The performances, the pacing, and the by-play that Landis and company have concocted for the stars and a half-dozen supporting players give the film its most immediate appeal. In the secondary roles, John Leguizamo (as Mike’s motor-mouth drug source) and Walton Goggins (as a particularly demented product of the CIA experiment) are especially good.

Connie Britton is good as a sympathetic CIA honcho, and Topher Grace snivels well enough as Mike and

Phoebe’s desk-bound CIA nemesis. Tony Hale has a nice bit as an otherwise feckless agent who has a welltimed crisis of conscience.

But, for me, the film’s most lasting effect is a matter of its very peculiar aftertaste: it manages to both satisfy and frustrate an impressive array of desires—for laid-back farce, for violent fantasy, for political satire, for boundary-breaking romance, etc.

It wouldn’t be unreasonable to insist that indulgent party-time comedies and paranoid spy thrillers have no business co-existing in the same movie. But “entertainment” is inherently indulgent, in the movies and elsewhere, and spy thrillers that reference drones, rogue agents, inter-agency rivalries, etc., can’t help but bring the long nightmare that is contemporary world history into view.

Plus, that clash of tendencies is so thoroughly pronounced in American Ultra that it’s hard not to feel that at least some of the film’s more corrosive ironies were fully intended. □

Ant-Man

Paul Rudd is Scott Lang, a professional, wisecracking thief given a new lease on life when scientist Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) shows him the wonders of his incredible shrinking suit. Director Peyton Reed (who replaced outgoing early director Edgar Wright) does a good although not outstanding, job. The framework for the movie plays it mighty safe, with an emphasis on family viewing and very little of the offbeat touches that are hallmarks of a Wright affair. After a setup that involves Lang’s release from prison, some business with his ex-wife (Judy Greer) and daughter (Abby Rider Fortson) and a short-lived job at Baskin-Robbins, he winds up in the company of Pym, who is justifiably concerned that his invention has fallen into the wrong hands. His sinister business partner Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) has uncovered Pym’s shrinking technology, and has created his own suit and a new bad-guy persona, Yellowjacket. Lang is hand picked by Pym to break into his own company’s headquarters and steal the new suit.

Rudd is a naturally funny guy who is so good as Lang/Ant-Man, the film would’ve likely been a dud without his presence. Cinemark 14. Rated R —B.G.

Fantastic Four

Marvel reboots the Fantastic Four franchise again, bringing in a new crop of actors to tell the origin story of the superhero team that uses its powers of stretching, blazing fire, turning invisible and smashing about as a giant chunk of rock to fight the evil Dr. Doom.

In this reboot of 2007’s Hitman, a seemingly inhumanly skilled assassin teams up with a young woman (who, it turns out, is similarly skilled) to help her learn the secrets of her past. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated R.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

For me, the newest Mission: Impossible is mostly a matter of comedy and digitally enhanced ballet. The whiplash storylines and convoluted plotting, with all those double agents and secret espionage schemes, are little more than a pretext for the spectacular carnival of outlandish action sequences that writer/director Christopher McQuarrie and producer/star Tom Cruise have concocted for this fifth entry in the Impossible franchise. Cruise is once again full of zest and bounce in the role of the central hero. With his mysterious hint of a grin and a body seemingly lined with invisible shock absorbers, he serves mainly as a live-wire action figure in this hyper kinetically animated cartoon of an adventure. The action is indeed quite lively, but very little of it feels like genuine live action. The “rogue nation” of the title seems to be something called The Syndicate, which is characterized in the film as an inversion or perhaps a perversion or maybe just a pathologically jealous rival of the Impossible Missions Force. The tracks of several reallife “rogue nations” seem plenty evident all over this movie, but McQuarrie/Cruise and company don’t seem to pay them much mind. Straight Outta Compton

For a biopic about one of the most iconoclastic musical acts ever, Straight Outta Compton plays things disappointingly safe. It says a lot about the film that its most charged and energetic moments happen during the closing credits, when scenes from the original video for the song “Straight Outta Compton” hit the screen like firecrackers going off in the theater. For those unfamiliar with the seminal gangsta-rap group’s story, the film provides a serviceable made-forTV-movie-style biography (but with much better music), and the young actors nail the characterizations of the group’s principal players—Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell), Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins) and Ice Cube (played by his son, O’Shea Jackson Jr.). But the excitement of the music and its revolutionary influence on American culture are greatly dampened by the film’s canned approach to storytelling (cue the recording-studio montage) and the ham-handed juggling of too many individual storylines and legacies for one film to handle.

Based on the popular TV series from the 1960s, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is more do-over than remake. It’s still a slightly raffish action adventure involving two spies, one American and one Russian, in a flippant Cold War-era fantasy. But here the physical action and spectacle are greatly amped up and the character dynamics, amusing but formulaic in the original, seem even further diminished. The movie’s Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) keep up appearances but are otherwise no match for the stars of the TV original. Alicia Vikander (as the men’s perky comrade and love interest) and Elizabeth Debicki (as the snarkiest and most glamorous of the film’s villains) add some spice but are mostly inconsequential. The director and company pay lavish attention to fashions of the 1960s

Located in a tiny shopping strip on 20th Street, El Rey doesn’t offer a picturesque exterior, but once inside the cheerful colors, shining floor, gleaming tables and the aroma of cooking food conveyed a welcoming sense of well-tended hominess. Greeted immediately by the cheerful young man serving as host and waiter, we sat down at the upholstered bench lining one wall and

scanned the double-sided menu he offered us.

With 30-plus options on the menu—including the exoticsounding and -looking house specialty, molcajete (named for the big stone mortar it’s served in), a Mexican soup/stew made with chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, veggies, onions and jalapeños— the choice was not made quickly.

There are also several breakfastspecific items on the menu, including breakfast burritos (with ham, chorizo, bacon and veggie options, $4 to $4.25), huevos rancheros ($6, with rice, beans and tortillas), huevos revueltos con papas (scrambled eggs with potatoes, $3.99) and even pancakes and huevos ($3.99).

Ultimately, since it was my first visit, I went with my go-to barometers for Mexican food establishments, chile relleno and chicken enchilada (combo platter for $7.99), while my brunch date, Missy, chose a torta with carne asada ($4.50).

While we waited for our entrées we sipped on cold Negra Modelo lagers ($3.25) and munched through a complimentary bowl of crispy fresh tortilla chips served with finely minced, fresh pico de gallo flecked with cilantro, plus a very flavorful and spicy red sauce. After finishing the first batch we asked for a refill, which was provided for an additional dollar and was well worth it.

every bit of which was covered with steaming, aromatic food.

Generous portions of fluffy, redtinged rice and creamy refried beans shared the plate with the large enchilada and beautifully battered chile relleno, both complemented by a freshly made, comfortably zesty sauce that I enhanced by pouring on the rest of the spicy red sauce that came with our appetizer chips.

At the outset I felt sure that the sizable portion would provide leftovers for another meal later that evening, but as I dug in I was so enthralled by the textures and flavors that I ended up cleaning the entire platter down to the point of scraping up the last remnants of sauce, rice and beans with the edge of my fork.

Missy watched in wide-eyed surprise at my feat of trenchermanship from behind her torta, which really was large enough for her to hide behind. It could have been the inspiration for one-time Chico band Mammoth Torta. It was nearly the diameter of a 7-inch single and tall enough to unhinge one’s jaw.

With a deep brown white bread bun overflowing with salsa, beans, shredded lettuce and most of all, juicy, flavorful meat, El Rey’s torta is a genuine bargain that could easily feed two people. We ended up taking half of it home and enjoyed it as a late snack while contemplating a return trip for dinner on a Friday or Saturday evening. □

Elitism for the People Pere Ubu Fire Records

In the mid-to-late-1970s, when most Midwestern teenagers were feasting on a steady diet of sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll from dick-swinging frontmen, there was something happening in Ohio intent on undermining all that. Pere Ubu formed in 1975 from the ashes of Rocket from the Tombs at a time when bands like Devo, Electric Eels and the Dead Boys (also an offshoot of RFTT) were seeping from Ohio’s major cities. These bands were punk rock at heart, but there was an underlying weirdness to them. Pere Ubu’s Midwestern grittiness and Dadaist experimentalism is captured on Elitism For the People 1975-1978, which covers the band’s important early existence. It begins with “Non-Alignment Pact,” the first song from their 1978 debut The Modern Dance. That song alone illustrates how far ahead of its time Pere Ubu really was—a compact, yet freaky, punk rock jag that came out the same year Saturday Night Fever was doing the hustle around the world. Elitism For the People also includes 1978’s Dub Housing as well as early singles like “30 Seconds Over Tokyo” and “Heart of Darkness.” It was the beginning of Pere Ubu’s left-of-center path, one that thankfully continues to this day.

Self-published Don Bird is a widely known local gadfly and self-described “patriot” who sometimes dresses up as Samuel Adams and stands on street corners bearing signs showing his disapproval of various judges, district attorneys and legislators, among others. As far as he is concerned, they are turning the republic he loves into a dictatorship of the elite. This former Marine fearlessly stands up for what he believes to be his constitutional rights, whether that means being able to fish without a license, have a jury trial following a traffic citation, or to keep and bear arms. He’s filed so many unsuccessful pro per lawsuits in Tehama County, where he lives, that he has been declared a “vexatious litigant” and forbidden to file ever again. So instead he’s put together this book—a mishmash of miscellaneous correspondence, libertarian-themed articles, court documents and screeds. I don’t agree with a lot of what this “agitator” says—President Obama is not an “evil person” who is “Hell Bent to destroy our Republic,” in my book—but I respect his passionate participation in citizen politics. Capri Subtitled Celebrating Lee Morgan, trumpeter Terell Stafford’s quintet does just that on Brotherlee Love’s nine tunes. All but two were composed by the brilliant Morgan, who got his first trumpet at 13 and five years later was in Dizzy Gillespie’s band before joining Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Morgan recorded 25 albums before being murdered at the age of 33, and his compositions have been recorded dozens of times. Here, Stafford teams up with saxophonist Tim Warfield, pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Dana Hall. Things get underway in a hurry with the opener, Morgan’s uptempo “Hocus Pocus,” which reveals the group to be ready for anything. They all slow down on the ballad “Candy” and Morgan’s “Carolyn,” both real treats with luxurious solos by Stafford, Barth and Washington. Warfield sits those two out but really romps with the others on Morgan’s “Stop Start” and “Speedball.” Stafford’s relaxed “Favor” is meant to give thanks, he explained, “to have the gift to make this record and be able to touch people with the music.” Although Stafford doesn’t have Morgan’s warm, vibrant tone, his enthusiasm is very much in evidence.

out with A bAngin’ pArty Things are going off at Lasalles. For its final two weekends, the soon-to-close club is bringing back many of the biggest, most popular bands (some out of retirement) to ever rock the stage of the longtime downtown nightspot.

This weekend: Friday, Aug. 28, it’s Chico/San Diego pop-reggae quintet Mystic Roots making its 76th(!) appearance at LaSalles, and Saturday, Aug. 29, one-time Chico roots-rock faves Buffalo Creek return to town for its first show in eight years, an early evening dance party on the patio.

Next weekend: Thursday, Sept. 3, it’s two shows in one night, with Chico’s current favorite jammers swamp Zen on the patio playing the final happy-hour show, followed by local indiepop superheroes surrogate joining forces with destroyers of worlds armed for apocalypse and retired emo studs Marked for death reuniting for the evening. Friday, Sept. 4, the venue’s onetime de facto house hip-hop crew, The Hooliganz, plays its last show ever, and on Sunday, Sept. 6, it’s the grand finale, featuring a reunion of a band that has played hundreds of shows on the LaSalles stage, the kings of Chico’s jam scene, Flier by Matt Loomis! the inimitable Electric Circus.

About ChiCo beer week First, the bad news. Just got word from sierra nevada Brewing Co. that they will not be hosting their annual single, Fresh, Wet & Wild Harvest Festival this year. But, not to worry, according to the brewery’s communications manager, Ryan arnold, the hop-focused brew fest isn’t going away, it’s just switching to a biennial schedule and will be back again in 2016.

The good news? The Chico news & Review Foundation (the CN&R’s nonprofit committed to investigative journalism and journalism scholarships) is teaming up with the Fork in the Road street-food gang to host the 2015 Chico Beer Week kick-off event, Brewfork, a craft-beer and food-truck pairing featuring a dozen or so craft brewers pouring samples alongside a dozen or so food trucks on the back lawn at Manzanita Place. The rally will take place on the first day of Chico Beer Week, which runs Oct. 8-17 this year. More beer ... MuCh More “Coveted” and “unique.” Those two words are like sweet, sweet music to the ears of fans of craft beer (or maybe “like crack rock” is a better metaphor?). And according to scott Marks, association manager for the California Craft Brewers association, those are the kinds of beers he’s expecting from the 150 Cali breweries (you read that right) that “have been asked to bring something special” to the Brewers showcase, the beer-festival finale of the California Craft Beer summit going down next month (Sept. 11-12) in Sacramento.

As excited as I am about the that promising prospect (Yeah, I’m going! arts dEVo knows what’s what.)—which will feature every great brewery in the state, from sierra nevada and Russian River to stone and Ballast Point— that’s just the capper on a what looks like a ridiculous weekend.

Before the festival on the Capitol Mall, there will be two days’ worth of demos and talks at the sac Convention Center. The expo floor will be set up to “look, feel and taste like a brewery,” Marks said, with interactive displays on ingredients and beer making. And throughout both days there will be food/ beer-pairing demos, tap talks with the biggest names in craftbrewing (e.g., “The Beginning of the CA Craft Beer Revolution”
