Other examples of hyphenated-American titles include Japanese-American, Native-American, MexicanAmerican, Asian-American and African-American, to name but a few. Why, then, would I wish to be called a Croatian-American?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of my Croatian roots. But America always gets the place of honor with me. I’m unabashedly proud, thankful and blessed to be a citizen of the United States.

I will not, cannot, split my loyalty between two countries. America is my home, where my heart is and my family resides. It’s the country I love, the only country. It’s the country I am willing to die for should it be necessary. Surely, I cannot say the same about Croatia.

It’s time to chart a new course. Let’s begin emphasizing our common interests and common American heritage rather than the things that make us different. Respect for diversity is a good thing, but not if done at the expense of our nation’s best interests.

Let’s always put America first. Rather than Irish-American, let’s instead say American of Irish descent. African-American changes to American of African descent. And so on.

America, land of the free and home of the brave. There can be no other. There is no other.

Dare I say, God bless the USA. □

the first of the debates, meaning the run for the White House has begun in earnest. On the one hand, we find it a little disturbing that this is happening so early in the game. The Iowa caucuses aren’t until February of next year. On the other hand, the long lead-up presents opportunities for regular people—lots of us—to actually have an impact on some of the issues that will define candidates and our country’s future.

There is one issue, though, where we think the vast majority of citizens stand in like-minded opposition, while Congress—despite its responsibility to achieve the will of the American people—has shown a willingness to subvert that will and American democracy. The issue we’re talking about is the decision made by the U.S. Supreme Court back in 2010 called Citizens United vs. Federal Elections Commission.

That’s the case in which the court held that the Members of government could not restrict Congress have sat election expenditures by corporations, essentially on their hands these saying that money is speech, past five years and therefore protected by the First Amendment. (We claiming the only actually agree that money is speech. That’s not our problem way to overcome with the decision.) This is this heinous bench also the case where the high legislation is with court bestowed corporations with “personhood,” with many a constitutional of the same rights as human amendment—an beings.

It’s a “straw man” argument, and it’s made because members of Congress are the primary beneficiaries of the hundreds of millions of dollars that have poured into elections from corporations.

But corporations are not people. For one, they are immortal, and giving them the ability to influence elections forever undermines the natural growth of a democracy. For example, the cultural view of slavery changed over the course of a single human lifetime in this country.

Secondly, corporations often have more money than almost any individual could ever hope to attain. The rule enables America to become the actual oligarchy-by-corporation Founding Fathers like Thomas Jefferson wrote against, instead of just the de facto oligarchy that can be overcome by sustained grassroots efforts.

But the Supreme Court has specifically enabled Congress to make laws to prevent certain types of speech from undermining the law, and the way to attack Citizens United is not to attempt to undermine the First Amendment aspect of money being speech, but instead to make it clear in law that corporations are not people, and as nonpersons, they have no legal expectations of First Amendment rights.

Both the major parties have proponents of the idea of breaking the hold that corporate money has taken on American elections, politicians and government. We must ask candidates how they expect to change the Supreme Court’s anti-democratic ruling, and then vote with this issue at the top of our minds. Until corporate influence can be removed from our democratic process, our country will continue to stumble on issues like climate change, health care and financial regulation. □

changes and charity Some of our savvier readers probably thumbed through this issue thinking that something is just a little different. That’s true. We lost about an inch from the paper’s height. This is a bad-news, good-news situation. The bad news includes the impetus for our reformatted look: We’re no longer printed at Paradise Post Printing, our longtime printer, which closed its doors at the end of June.

The worst part is that 41 locals were employed at this Ridge business. We feel for them and their families. On our end, it forced us to find a new press and the best one to meet our needs couldn’t print the size we’d become accustomed to.

The good news here is that CN&R’s fearless art director, Tina Flynn, has worked some magic, playing with fonts and trimming white space so that readers won’t notice much has changed. This column, for example, is the same length. In other cases, stories might contain a couple dozen fewer words. This includes our weekly guest commentary; previously 400 words, now 350.

The other good news is that the new press can print the entire paper in color. That’s a big deal. It’s been frustrating all these years to have to print a beautiful, colorful photo in black and white. The new size also fits into the front window of our newsstands better. CN&R delivery drivers have had to fold over the issue to properly display it.

We hope you like the new format. in other news: This is the first week of the Annie B’s Community Drive. That’s the North Valley Community Foundation’s annual fundraising effort that, for the first time ever, the CN&R is taking part in, via our nonprofit arm, the Chico News & Review Foundation. I’ve written about our foundation in this space before, but, for the uninitiated, it’s a way for readers to support local investigative journalism. That type of reporting is critically underfunded around the country.

I mean, nobody is breaking down my office door with money for us to hire a reporter to, say, write about our vulnerable populations: elderly folks, mentally ill citizens, the developmentally disabled, or to write about government accountability and transparency. We do write about these things, but only occasionally at the depths to which they merit. For an example, see last year’s piece on the exorbitant compensation of Chico’s public safety (“Strongarming the budget,” by Dave Waddell, Feb. 27, 2014).

In any event, a terrific time to donate is during the Annie B’s drive, which runs until Sept. 30. That’s because the organization has a cool hundred grand—$50,000 from a local anonymous donor and $50,000 from other community sponsors—to spread among the 200-plus participating organizations. Each nonprofit will get 100 percent of what it raises, plus a portion of that $100,000. Last year, it was about a 7 percent match to each participant, according to NVCF’s Jovanni Tricerri.

Responding to Cecil Re: “The tragedy of Cecil” (Editorial, July 30): I agree with the CN&R that we should be outraged by the manner in which this majestic animal’s life was taken, and by big-game trophy hunting in general. (Africa’s lion population has declined by over 40 percent in two decades.)

There is a related story that I can find even more egregious. That is the slaughter of massive numbers of elephants and rhinos for their tusks by poachers. According to Defenders of Wildlife, Tanzania, which once was an elephant mecca, has lost two-thirds of its elephants to poachers in the past four years. The African Wildlife Foundation says at the current level of poaching (about 35,000 elephants were poached in Africa in 2014), elephant populations may not survive 10 years in the wild.

Elephant ivory gets up to $3,000/ pound and rhino horn a whopping $30,000/pound. The black rhino population is down about 98 percent since 1960!

President Obama very recently announced a plan to ban the sale of ivory across state lines. That’s a step in the right direction. The CN&R editorial named one organization readers can support. Another that I would highly recommend is the African Wildlife Foundation. Check them out.

I’m hoping this letter will reach some young readers. A lot of kids are mad and sad about a beautiful African lion named Cecil. He was wounded with an arrow and then killed by an American dentist, Walter Palmer.

This is confusing. Dentists try not to hurt their patients. So, why would this man go to Africa and hurt a lion?

Here’s one answer: The man hurt the lion because he thought it was exciting. Most people want to believe that animals don’t feel pain like we do, so we can use them any way we want. Re “Buzz-cut barbecue” (Second & Flume, by Melissa Daugherty, July 30): Why do you think it’s a little early in the game for Sean Morgan to kick off his 2016 City Council campaign? Is it the strong support that came out for him 15 months before the election?

I did not see your paper questioning Mr. Stone coming out Nov. 25, 2014, just 21 days after the November 2014 election and seven days before the new City Council was even sworn into office.

On Mr. Stone’s Facebook page (Nov. 25, 2014), “we have begun fundraising efforts for Stone for Council 2016. I am asking for your support and contribution moving forward to the 2016 election.”

Stone also goes on, if you contributed $20.83 for the next 24 months, you would maximize your possible contributions.

I questioned Mr. Stone why he would be asking so early and doing so in the holiday season when local nonprofits are asking for support and donations.

It just shows Mr. Stone’s personal political ambitions and can it be good for the city?

Cleaning won’t help Re “Murky waters” (Newslines,

by Howard Hardee, July 16): I doubt that cleaning helps clear the water. What it does do is remove the algae from the bottoms so it is not so slippery.

I would guess that removing the algae would strip some of the ability of the stream to clean itself. Something like taking

antibiotics to cure an upset stomach, or dumping Clorox into a septic tank.

Beating Bernie’s drum I just got back from an organizing meeting. Over 100 degrees, Chico Grange Hall, no air-conditioning, just 200 or so excited Chicoans.

Young, old, all excited about one person and his ideas, Bernie Sanders. If there was a common thread, it was that enough is enough. We have suffered long enough under a government that is controlled by the rich and powerful. We have had enough of U.S. corporations avoiding taxes and hiding all their wealth overseas, and enough of our representatives in Washington being bought and paid for by wealthy, controlling interests.

Bernie Sanders is the only candidate looking out for the average guy’s best interest. Sanders is the only guy talking about all the important issues facing U.S. citizens today. Bernie has plans to control and lower health care costs, for jobs for all Americans, and to even the playing field and bring back opportunity for all young people by making higher education affordable.

Bernie Sanders does not take political contributions from wealthy corporations. His average contribution is $35. Bernie does not do fundraisers; rather he has town hall meetings and giant rallies. People across the country are turning out en masse to hear Sanders’ message. Bernie is our guy, and that was very evident tonight.

Stop illegal pot gardens Commercial pot growers worsen drought conditions in Butte County. Marijuana’s high water demands deplete wells, and growers divert or transport it to stay afloat until harvest season. The groundwater supplies in foothill communities cannot sustain noncompliant pot cultivation. The Office of Emergency Management has stepped in to provide lifesaving water needs for families.

Citizens can help too.

Ordinance 4075 (Measure A) is only enforced if illegal grows are reported to Butte County code enforcement. The process is reactive (complaint-driven).

Call Butte County’s anonymous tip line (538-6000) to report noncompliant marijuana-growing activities or print a medical marijuana cultivation complaint form at www.buttecounty.net/dds/ CodeEnforcement.aspx to drop off at code enforcement.

A dedicated team of CEOs (code enforcement officers) make site inspections to ensure compliance. Butte County sheriff’s deputies accompany them to assure safety. They are all doing a tremendous job enforcing Measure A. The final perk is water saved for people and wildlife.

Help in my fight Chico, this is what I need to fight for your rights to safe access to medical cannabis: First, please call your representatives and ask why after 20 years of being legal there are still no dispensaries in Butte County. Next, we need a location. This could be a warehouse or a large enough space for at least 50 people. We need access now, so call the City Council to agendize medical cannabis.

I need all of you to start raising hell about this and fight the wrong-sided representatives like Larry Wahl calling us deadbeats because we have no money to pay fines. After paying for land, we are forced by the unconstitutional policies (not laws) to control property by our district attorney.

We are marginalized more by the incredible input of Wahl.

I need you to make it clear to our representatives there are precedents throughout our state that safe access lowers crime. Please read the interview on Synthesisweekly.com with Maureen Kirk about this subject.

UNIVERSITY MAKES THE GRADE

Chico State scored high marks for value and accessibility in a recent Money magazine rundown of “Best Colleges for Your Money.”

The university received an “A-” grade for added value, placing it in the top 50 of more than 700 schools reviewed. The valueadded grade is based on six-year graduation rates, tuition prices and average earnings of students in the first five years after graduation.

The school also ranked 154th—in the top 20 percent—on the magazine’s list of “50 Best Colleges You Can Actually Get Into,” which included schools with an admission rate of 66 percent or greater.

“These rankings show the value of a degree from Chico State and the return on investment we offer,” Adam Stoltz, director of Chico State’s Office of Admissions, said in a press release.

ARMED MOVIEGOER ARRESTED

During a second suspicious visit to a local movie theater, a man was arrested for illegally carrying a concealed, loaded firearm on Monday (Aug. 3), according to a Chico Police Department press release.

CPD officers were called to the Cinemark 14 theater at about 5:30 p.m. the previous day (Aug. 2) when a bullet was found inside one of the theaters, next to where a man who was reportedly acting suspiciously had been sitting. Police were called back the next day at 4:15 p.m., when the same man allegedly returned to watch the same movie, Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation.

Police contacted the suspect—identified as Daniel Darrington, 29—and searched his backpack, finding a loaded pistol. Darrington also consented to a search of his home, but no further criminal evidence was found.

FORMER ENLOE ADMIN DIES

Retired longtime Enloe Medical Center administrator James Sweeney died Friday, July 31, at the hospital he ran for 28 years, according to an Enloe press release. He was 82.

Sweeney (pictured) ran Enloe from 1967 to 1995, and had the second-longest tenure as administrator behind hospital founder Newton Thomas Enloe. The Bay Area native led the hospital through many major transformations and milestones, including the addition of paramedic and EMT programs, Flight Care, numerous critical-care services, as well as many physical expansions to the hospital. During his time, Enloe became the regional medial center it is today, growing from 200 to 1,700 employees under his watch.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m., at the Enloe Conference Center, 1528 Esplanade.

Friends of the Arts takes over public access channel, launches original programming

Behind the scenes, the station’s two stewards can’t seem to stand still.

Debra Lucero, executive director, is showing people around the newly refurbished studio that includes a classroom area, a studio, a control room and a reception area that’s been turned into a green-screen room.

“This is where it all happens,” she says, gesturing to a small closet that holds a state-of-the-art cable casting system that sends all their content to television sets across the area.

But people who tuned into channel 11 that night wouldn’t have seen any of that.

Instead, they saw a taste of the new original programming Lucero and Sklyer Sabine, program director, are working toward creating for Chico’s public access channel.

BCAC.tv (Butte Community Access Channel) is run by Friends of the Arts, a state/local partner to the California Arts Council, for which Lucero is the executive director. When Friends of the Arts acquired the station late last year after the city of Chico put out a request for proposal, Lucero and Sabine traveled to public access stations across the state to learn about their operations. On June 5, Friends of the Arts officially took over, with plans to recreate the channel as more community-produced and -focused. Other operators have had difficulty having success with the station.

Until three years ago, it was run by Butte College, which turned over the reins to the city of Chico to save money.

On a less chaotic day in the studio, Lucero and Sabine spoke about their goals for the station and the community.

The two have many things in common.

They both are originally from Chico. They have a passion for the community, the surrounding area and the arts. They’ve each left the area to pursue their career goals— Sabine spent many years in Los Angeles and Louisiana working on film productions and Lucero spent eight years as a journalist for publications across the country. But they both admit there’s something about Chico that kept bringing them back. With running the public access channel, they

both found a place in town that could put their skills to use.

“As I’ve gotten older, it began to be sort of a crisis in my career where I loved being in Chico but I couldn’t pursue my career goals and I couldn’t find any meaningful wage or meaningful employment with the skills I had,” Sabine said. “It’s been this dance over the years, this hope and aspiration, to be able to fuse these two worlds and stay in Chico while still pursuing my career.”

The station had been relying on a classic arts package, a staple at most public access stations, but the team hopes to phase that out and replace it with more original content. Sabine has been approached by many people expressing interest in developing programming like a narrative talk show, a comedy show with local comedians, cooking programs and even a show a pedicab driver wants to do on the back of his bike.

“I really hope people come down, get acquainted with us, see the space, start exploring and let their imaginations go,” Sabine said. “We want to make it as easy as having your own radio show where you come in, turn on a few switches, hit a few buttons, deliver your broadcast.”

To that end, the station is creating camps that will teach students, particularly atrisk students, digital media skills like lighting, audio, videography and editing.

Its first partnership included local high school students who developed a video on the Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation, which provided the baby tiger and reptiles Monday night in the studio. Behind the cameras and curtains on opening night, Sabine ran between the studio and the control room, busily juggling friendly hellos and working with students to produce a handful of new shows.

“Get on camera one, get on camera two, start with the wide shot,” he told Emmett Norris and Gage Dupper, two student members of BCAC.tv who were getting ready to introduce Muir Hughes, co-owner of The Bookstore, and her pilot talk show.

Running back to the control room, he gave direction to Sasha Walters, a Chico State student, who was running the video switcher and controlling the camera feed. On air, they saw Hughes giving a taste of a talk show she’s developing, and interviewing local personalities like Erin Wade, president of the 1078 Gallery’s board of directors, and Kevin Durkin, a local astrologer more commonly known as Kozmic Kev. With the development of more teaching opportunities and the creation of a classroom space at the studio, BCAC.tv hopes to generate original, community-focused programming 24/7 (when they’re not airing public meetings, that is). Plus, members of the community are able to develop their own shows. BCAC.tv is asking for memberships to produce a local show ($25 a year or $10 a year for students to cover things like equipment and insurance).

A local community-run television station has special implications, Sabine said. Mostly, it allows content creators to be directly involved with their audience, which, in this case, will span from Corning in the north down to Gridley in the south.

“These are your neighbors, these are your friends, the kids you go to school with, these are your teachers,” Sabine said.

“We want to affect our region; we want to have a voice for our region.

We’re in the building process, but it’s starting right here in the heart of Chico,” Lucero added. “With a heart like this, we’ll be able to build a pretty good reach everywhere else.” □

Randall Stone lambasted over response to vanished documents sore that had been festering for a week burst open at the Chico City Council meeting ATuesday (Aug. 4), when Councilman Randall Stone came under blistering fire for remarks he posted on Facebook challenging the city’s handling of campaign financial reports.

At issue was Councilwoman Tami Ritter’s motion to appoint Stone as the city’s voting representative to the upcoming annual conference of the League of California Cities. Stone was the voting rep last year and also is vice president of the league’s Sacramento Division.

A week earlier, however, on July 28, Stone sparked a heated controversy when he posted on Facebook a complaint about the city’s handling of past City Council campaign financial reports.

“Since a new City Council majority was sworn into office,” he wrote, “City of Chico staff members have arbitrarily and unilaterally (without vote of the public or Council) absconded [sic] campaign contribution reports from the City of Chico’s website.”

Calling the action “abhorrent and inexcusable,” Stone implied that the decision to “redact” a decade’s worth of campaign information from the city’s website was tied to the conservative council majority that took office in December 2014.

On Friday, July 31, City Clerk Debbie Presson, whose office handles the reports, informed council members that most of the reports were still on the website but inaccessible because the links to them were inadvertently removed last summer. Lacking staff to fix

the problem, in October she’d put up a notice in red that the reports were available in her office.

Local business owner Michael Reilley said Stone was acting like “a bully on the playground” by going after Presson, and council watchdog Stephanie Taber said, “I only ask that you do not send someone [to the LCC conference] who is mean-spirited, egocentric, self-aggrandizing and a bully.”

But it was Mayor Mark Sorensen who had the most to say. Acknowledging that the city should have created a better reporting system years ago, he noted that the reports had to be entered manually and that Presson was doing the best she could with a reduced staff.

Stone’s charges, he said, were “utterly false and defamatory” and made after he waited only two hours for Presson to respond to an email inquiry. If he’d been patient, he would have seen that the files were quickly located and returned to the website. The city is in the process of implementing a new system, NetFile, that will automatically upload campaign finance reports, Sorensen said.

“The entire episode is nothing less than an attempt to get press attention” as part of Stone’s re-election campaign, the mayor charged.

Asked following the meeting for a response, Stone said bluntly, “It’s horseshit.”

For nearly a decade the information was available, he explained. Presson knew in October that it was gone from the website, was asked to repost it, and didn’t do so. Now that he’s called attention to it, the information is again available.

Ritter’s nomination of Stone failed, 3-3 (Vice Mayor Sean Morgan was absent).

Sorensen then nominated Councilman Andrew Coolidge to be the city’s LCC rep; the motion passed 4-2, with Ritter and Schwab dissenting but Stone voting aye.

In other council news: Council members voted

unanimously to sell a house at 1413 Salem St. formerly used as a domestic-violence shelter. Vacant for five years, it’s become a nuisance in the neighborhood, noted Marie Demers, the city’s housing manager.

The council also voted unanimously not to waive a development-impact fee of $48,000 levied on a new CHP facility. The city needs the money, council members said, and besides, the facility’s owner is a private firm that will be leasing the site to the CHP. The council also seemed to look favorably on an offer from local dentist Michael Jones to install a public-access entrance to the Bidwell Ranch property. It’s going to hold off until completion of a long-term management plan for the site, however.

Finally, council members voted unanimously to appoint Ken Rensink to replace Matt Juhl-Darlington, who has resigned from the Planning Commission.

Avoiding high-tech spies Ex-military officers provide insight into electronic surveillance and the protection of whistleblowers woman I don’t know greets me by first name.

Asmiling The conference room has been swept for surveil-

lance devices, she explains, and everyone who enters will get a brief pat-down.

With three other journalists and a computer security expert, I am about to begin a two-day training in pre-electronic spycraft. Our instructors: two military police veterans. The goal: learn how to protect people who risk their jobs or freedom to share information with the public, also known as whistleblowers.

After we all get settled in, class starts. “Once you realize that what’s possible in electronic surveillance today has basically reached the realm of science fiction, you have to take a different route,” says Larry Jones, a former intelligence analyst for the Marines and one of the workshop’s leaders.

His partner, Daryl Baginski, guides us through pen-and-paper cryptosystems—ways to encrypt and decrypt short messages. When we’ve encrypted a note, we mail it or leave it for someone to pick up.

These techniques date back thousands of years, but even simple ciphers can stump today’s best codebreaking computers for days. A cipher called the “one-time pad” can defeat computer analysis entirely and is still used by spies. However, to get around its limitations (it requires a long key of random letters), Baginski invented his own cipher and teaches it in class. The aim, he says, is “making it prohibitively laborious and expensive to keep a tab on you.”

“Governments from all over the world are [acting]

against journalists, human rights activists, human rights defenders and political dissidents,” explains Bruce Schneier, widely considered the foremost U.S. electronic-security expert (Congress called him in to explain the implications of the Edward Snowden leaks). “There’s an arms race here, and journalists are losing.”

In November 2014, for example, online investigative publication The Intercept reported that the U.K.’s top intelligence agencies gave their employees authority to ignore attorney-client privilege and review the private documents of anyone in “sensitive professions,” including journalists. Meanwhile, under the Obama administration, the U.S. government has subpoenaed or snooped on reporters from Fox News to The New York Times and, according to an analysis

by PolitiFact, prosecuted more employees for press leaks than all previous administrations combined.

In this climate, journalists must take precautions when communicating with sensitive sources. In 2012, reporters from Vice News failed to strip metadata from a photo of John McAfee, a famous fugitive with whom they were traveling, and inadvertently revealed his location. But even the best electronic security practices have their limits. “Journalists now compete with spooks and spies,” Tom Lowenthal, the resident security expert for the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), wrote in a post on CPJ’s website in April, “and the spooks have the home-field advantage.”

in keyboard. That includes the passwords necessary to unlock encrypted communications and files. Another device can, from a short distance away, read the electromagnetic waves emanating from computer monitors. So anything on screen is potentially vulnerable. Still wackier are the programs that can listen to the tiny sounds of a computer processor. A technician with sufficient software can, in theory, enlist your cellphone to listen to the data being handled by your nearby laptop—including, again, encryption keys. In this age of technological wizardry, the humble passing of notes may be the last way to communicate with guaranteed privacy.

To be clear, these listening techniques are highly targeted, unlike the NSA programs revealed

by Snowden. Only certain people should be worried: whistleblowers from the national security or intelligence communities (and possibly from megacorporations), and the journalists who work with them. But since freedom of the press is at stake, everyone should be concerned. From Snowden to the man who released more than 200 videos of helicopters dumping noxious herbicides on agricultural workers in Oregon: Without whistleblowers, critical investigative reporting will die.

That’s where Baginski and Jones come in. The ex-military police agents started the

Clandestine Reporters Working Group (CRWG) because they believe investigative journalism is a core American value. Since leaving the Marines six years ago, Jones has worked as a private investigator. Baginski left the military in 2002 and became an attorney and college instructor.

The men aren’t out to bash their former colleagues. Baginski grants that some extraordinarily smart people work in the intelligence community. He says the lavish recruiting process—which sells intelligence work as a “higher calling”—lures them in.

Both stress that training as an intelligence operator never truly leaves your psyche. That isn’t to say you look over your shoulder all the time, but you’re constantly aware of your surroundings and many potential adversaries.

“If we weren’t educating reporters,” Jones says, only half-joking, “we’d be doing something else with our skills. We could help keep tabs on big-game poachers in Africa.”

That afternoon, we take a field trip. Jones shows us how to analyze the urban landscape for creative ways to lose a minder: to mail something without being seen and to communicate with sources while going about our daily business. To anyone keeping track, our movements look utterly boring—and that’s the point.

This is CRWG’s first training session. Eventually, Jones and Baginski envision the organization being able to provide highly trained reporters to media organizations when a story seems too risky to tackle alone. Baginski imagines providing more thorough training in detecting and evading surveillance, urban land navigation and even how to maneuver out of checkpoints and stand up to interrogation.

It’s clear that services like those provided by CRWG have value, but they come at a cost. Lowenthal, writing for the CPJ website, notes that the expenses necessary to protect key sources, such as “hiring elite security teams instead of extra editors,” can take a deep toll on newsroom budgets.

“When journalists must compete with spies and surveillance,” he writes, “even if they win, society loses.”

Calling all authors It’s time to scare readers into doing something about climate change

horrors across not only the planet, but litGerature as well. For more than a half-century, lobal warming is casting meteorological

novelists have made mayhem of Earth by peering at it through the lens of climate change.

J.G. Ballard wrote forcefully of our blue marble, riven by heat, in The Burning World in 1964, and by floods in The Drowned World in 1962. Of more recent vintage is Kim Stanley Robinson’s Science in the Capital trilogy, launched in 2004 with Forty Signs of Rain.

Both Ballard and Robinson belonged to a coterie of sci-fi writers who took climate change seriously, then helped birth a subgenre: climate fiction, or cli-fi.

But climate fiction also has drawn the attention of mainstream literary figures, such as Margaret Atwood, who penned her own cli-fi trilogy, MaddAddam in a prolific decade that began in 2003. Her sister in letters, Barbara Kingsolver, wrote movingly of the warming in Flight Behavior by focusing on one young woman’s shocking discovery of millions of monarch butterflies near her home in rural Tennessee.

New novels embracing cli-fi arrive every month. Most are dystopian, which is understandable. While Atwood infuses her work with flashes of wit, the most enduring leitmotif of cli-fi is basic survival.

We authors of cli-fi find ample fodder for our grim themes in news cycles that churn out daunting climate reports almost every day, though little of it appears to spark any real urgency among our fellow citizens.

This has left some of us wondering why—with the preponderance of North Americans now accepting anthropocentric climate change as real—we are so emotionally unmoved by a disaster that could claim much of the planet by the end of the century.

That scenario sounded extreme just a few years ago; now it appears, in so many words, in the official projections of staid organizations, such as the World Bank and,

once again in its most recent report, the International Energy Agency.

As Pope Francis has fused theology with climatology to try to move the masses— and the U.S. Department of Defense has analyzed and publicized the startling links between global warming and national security—perhaps we as authors should use our imaginative skills to increase cli-fi’s fear factor. Science is not only sounding unnerving alarms, it may also be giving us ample justification for scaring people into action— or inaction, if it means they’ll fly, drive and consume less—thanks to the work of psychologist Daniel Kahneman.

Kahneman is a Nobel Prize winner in economics and the author of Thinking, Fast and Slow, which posits that emotionally derived knowledge can be more effective than rational knowledge in influencing behavior.

In an outstanding essay about Kahneman’s work in The New York Review of Books, the theoretical physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson offers a striking example of emotionally derived information and its impact by noting that for every person killed by a shark in the waters near San Diego, 10 lives are saved. Why? Because the fear of shark attacks is so sharp, if you’ll excuse the pun, that it keeps people out of the water—and out of danger of drowning— for a number of years afterward.

Harvard University’s Naomi Oreskes,

a professor of the history of science and an affiliated professor of Earth and planetary sciences, and California Institute of Technology’s Erik Conway, a historian of science and technology, have recently turned to fiction to try to dramatize their deep concerns about warming.

Oreskes is quoted in The New York Times as saying that writing The Collapse of Western Civilization: A View from the Future “gave us the freedom to extrapolate and show what’s at stake. Our narrator concludes that in the 21st century, the forces of climate denial prevailed.”

This is how the novel’s narrator put it: “Western civilization had the technological know-how and capability to effect an orderly transition to renewable energy, yet the available technologies were not implemented in time.”

Now that’s scary fiction.

Or is it really fiction?

What is most frightening, of course, is that to date we are headed in that direction.

As authors, we need to fight back harder with our pixels and pens, and ever more powerful blends of climate science and compelling fiction.

How did you start this business?

Brandon: Noelle has always been very creative with making tasty foods and popcorn has always been an essential family food, so she started putting popcorn seasoning together. We’d take it to parties and potlucks and people would say, “This is the best.” Then they started saying, “You should start selling this.” So a year ago we decided to jump in head first, made a small batch and it sold out at a local event.

What role do each of you take?

Brandon: Noelle is definitely the brain child.

Noelle: I come up with the new flavors, essentially, but obviously I’m bouncing ideas off of him. My college degree is in graphic design, so I designed the labels. Then my husband started taking over more of the design and packaging. It’s just us two, so we do everything.

What are your seasonings made of?

Noelle: The main ingredient is nutritional yeast. It’s an all-natural ingredient. It’s vegan, it’s gluten free. It’s high in vitamin B12, fiber and protein. It’s something that’s healthy for you, but it tastes really yummy.

How do you come up with different flavors?

Brandon: Noelle is very innovative, knows her spices very well, and just starts playing around in the kitchen. She tests it on the kids.

We’re very active in the potluck scene and we’ll take bowls of popcorn and food with the seasonings to test them out.

Noelle: With the chipotle flavor, for instance, my son really likes Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. They taste really yummy, but they have MSG in them and red dye, so I wanted to come up with a healthier alternative.

Why popcorn?

Brandon: There is something novel about something that transforms from a kernel to something that is fluffy and white. It went from a kind of a necessity and something that was a novelty to something that’s … kind of ubiquitous.

Noelle: Everyone identifies with popcorn. Everyone likes to go to movie theaters, so it’s kind of that nostalgic feeling. It’s a simple snack. It’s got a nice crunch.

Over the past year or so, I’ve had the chance to interview several Chico residents who have opened new eateries. When I’ve asked the customary question about how they ended up in the restaurant business, most have talked about their rich experience in the food and hospitality industry.

So when Greg Scott, the owner of the Hotel Diamond’s new restaurant, Two Twenty, said he was a senior vice president for an oil and gas business, I thought I misheard him. Canola oil and glass, maybe? Or did he say boil and gas?

Nope, oil and gas it was. Scott’s a veteran executive for Gulf Oil in Boston, though his wife is from Chico and they have homes both here and in Beantown.

Two Twenty is Scott’s first foray into the restaurant business. He admits he has a unique background for a restaurateur, but like any good businessperson, Scott said he adheres to the belief that if you hire talented people, things will work out just fine. Based on his decision to hire Michael Iles, longtime Sierra Nevada Brewery & Taproom executive chef, to lead the Two Twenty kitchen, I’d say Scott knows what he’s doing.

Two Twenty, which opened July 31, takes the place of Johnnie’s Restaurant, which closed in January. Since then, Scott and his team have upgraded the space on the ground floor of the historic downtown Chico hotel for the new restaurant and bar, with the name for Two Twenty coming from its address at 220 W. Fourth St. The bar will be open daily, beginning, of course, at 2:20 p.m. and in the restaurant, dinner will be served nightly. Breakfast will be served weekdays from 7 to 10 a.m., and Saturdays and Sundays will include brunch.

Scott said the restaurant’s menu is reflective of classic California cuisine, with the dinner menu featuring pizzas, burgers and a chicken and waffles dish with the most interesting flavor combination I’ve heard of. The entrée is chicken on a pecan waffle, with corn relish, mushroom maple butter, hot sauce and jalapeño jelly.

Charity drive: Chico’s Liberty Cab celebrated its 10-year anniversary in a really cool way this month. To mark the milestone, a group of Liberty’s drivers drove at least one shift with all profits going toward a charity of their choosing. Liberty Cab owner Gianni Caponera even drove some of the fundraising shifts himself.

There were 10 entities that benefited from the proceeds, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of the North Valley, Anita Ingrao (aka Chico Community) Observatory, Shalom Free Clinic, Butte Humane Society and Vectors of Chico.

ACLU SUES STATE HOSPITAL SYSTEM

A recent lawsuit alleges that California’s Department of State Hospitals and the Department of Developmental Services have failed to transfer mentally ill and incompetent inmates from jail to treatment facilities in a timely fashion.

On behalf of families of criminal defendants, the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California filed suit on July 29, charging that “the two agencies are leaving vulnerable defendants to languish in jail, denying them treatment and their right to due process,” an ACLU press release reads. State and federal laws mandate that defendants who don’t understand criminal court proceedings must be released for evaluation and treatment. If they’re restored to competency, they then must return to court to face their charges.

Courts have recommended that defendants be sent to a state hospital within 35 days of such a decision, but the ACLU says many incompetent defendants wait more than a year before being transferred to a treatment facility.

RIGHT-TO-DIE DENIED

Three terminally ill patients fighting for their right to request and obtain lethal medications to end their lives lost their case in San Diego Superior Court on July 24.

The plaintiffs were challenging Section 401 of the state penal code, which makes it a crime to deliberately aid in another person’s suicide.

Their attorneys argued that the right to hasten death is an extension of established legal rights, such as refusing life-extending treatments like a feeding tube or ventilator, according to KQED. But Judge Gregory Pollack dismissed the case, adding that whether to allow physicianassisted suicide is a question for the Legislature or voters, rather than the court. Meanwhile, the state’s right-to-die measure, Senate Bill 128, is tabled for the year after stalling at the committee level.

CALIFORNIA’S COVERED

Implementation of the Affordable Care Act has insured the majority of Californians who previously did not have health care coverage, according to a study recently released by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Conducting the survey by phone, Kaiser concluded that more than two-thirds of people who did not have health coverage prior to the ACA now have some form of insurance, including more than 75 percent of Latinos. Kaiser also found that newly insured Californians are less likely to say it’s difficult to afford health care (49 percent, compared with 86 percent in 2013).

Further, about 86 percent of respondents said their health needs are being met, and, compared with 2013, the newly insured are half as likely to report difficulty paying medical bills in the past year.

First, it’s just plain difficult for software to account for the variations in the way humans communicate—especially misspellings, abbreviations and differences in syntax and documentation. Due to the challenges of developing such software, there aren’t many other companies with rival technologies, he said. SyTrue’s software uses natural language processing, a kind of artificial intelligence that, in basic terms, makes the computer understand data as a human would.

Second, there wasn’t much incentive for the health care industry to draw insights from data prior to the recent, industry-wide shift toward outcome-based care now emphasized under the Affordable Care Act. “Doctors have been paid by the visit,� he said. “If you’re a doctor, I go to your office and how much time you spend with me determines how big of a check you get. Now you have a shift in health care that’s saying, ‘I’m going to pay for outcomes.’�

Moving forward, Silvestro hopes SyTrue can help “solve some of the toughest problems that health care faces,â€? such as streamlining the process for doctors taking in new patients. “If you want your next physician to go through your medical record and make a decision, they have to read through every page of a thick booklet. It just doesn’t make sense. If you can have a technology that can go through and extract all the pertinent information, you can get a whole history of someone in a glance, rather than spending five hours of reading that file.â€? â–Ą

That’s something SyTrue helps to address with its client vRad, the nation’s largest network of radiologists, which includes professionals in 2,200 hospitals nationwide. “In radiology, we’re identifying something in a document and making sure that is actually communicated to the patient,� Silvestro said. “So they don’t need to wait too long for that interaction to occur.�

And since vRad is such a broad network, it’s able to use SyTrue’s technology to determine national trends and averages, such as how often X-ray scans discover something noteworthy like a broken bone or tumor. “What percentage of time are you actually finding something?�

ergio C. Garcia came to California packed onto the bed of a Chevy pickup. It was July 4, 1994, and the 17-year-old was one of eight undocumented Mexican immigrants hidden under a hard plastic cover as they crossed the U.S. border under a blazing desert sun.

Garcia prayed out loud as fellow travelers passed out from the heat. He was sweat-drenched and seething at his father, who had asked him to make the perilous journey, to relocate for the second time to a country where he would be labeled “alien” and face the barriers associated with having crossed, without a visa, the world’s most frequently crossed international border.

In his young mind, he was leaving an important position—he was studentbody president of his rural Mexican high school. But he couldn’t have known that he would assume a much greater leadership role when he returned to the Chico area, where he had spent his early childhood. He couldn’t have known that 20 years into the future he would be known,

nationally, as the undocumented attorney.

In early 2014, Garcia became the state’s, and probably the nation’s, first undocumented immigrant to earn a law license after publicly disclosing his immigration status. His case was debated in the media and at the state Supreme Court, and ultimately inspired the passage of two new state laws.

Today, at 38, he is a legal U.S. resident with a Chico civil law practice.

He’s also a writer; an inspirational speaker; and by virtue of his experience, passion and political instincts, a figurehead for a generation of immigrants. They are young adults who were brought here illegally as children and are struggling with policies that have become increasingly inflexible and punitive during the past 20 years.

Garcia appears weekly on a Spanishlanguage television show to discuss immigration issues. As a columnist for Spanish-language newspapers in this country, he writes about both the personal and political, about his mother’s influence and about how to respond to Donald Trump’s anti-Mexican commentary.

In June, he spoke to the families of Latino graduates at UCLA. In July, he published a column in The New York

BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS Times, wading into a national controversy over sanctuary cities. The column elicited responses from 173 readers, several of whom attacked him for his legal status or as an “illegal alien lawyer.”

Said a reader who called himself Doug: “… the act of granting you a law license was completely against the spirit of citizenship of the USA.” But it is the “spirit of citizenship” that seems so elusive and unattainable to many of the unauthorized immigrants who grew up in this country and identify as American. They sometimes call themselves “Dreamers” because they long for a pathway to citizenship that, depending on their circumstances, may not exist, or if it does, may be very, very long.

Take, for example, Garcia’s almost 21-year wait for a green card—the card that signifies legal residency and can be a first step toward citizenship. He received his green card on May 20, but his application had been approved in early 1995, when his father, then a legal resident and now an American citizen, sponsored young Sergio. Under the quota system in use, Mexican applicants who qualify often wait more than 20 years.

attorneys representing the State Bar’s Committee of Bar Examiners in its effort to admit and license Garcia. In 2011, the California Bar asked the state Supreme Court to rule on whether an undocumented immigrant who was otherwise qualified could be licensed to practice law without violating federal statutes.

“His status as undocumented was a function of problems with the immigration system and nothing he had done wrong,” Johnson said, noting that he found the case “compelling.” Garcia, he said, was made to wait for a visa because of “the problem with backlogs in immigrant visa categories.”

The author of a book on immigration, The “Huddled Masses” Myth: Immigration and Civil Rights, Johnson says Garcia provides an example of what’s gone awry with policy.

“I think he’s a poster child for the unfairnesses suffered by the Dreamers who were brought here as children, and aren’t criminals, and as far as we can tell, have done everything right,” Johnson said. “Sergio has become a symbol so much larger, in the end. ... His positive attitude has caught the national imagination.”

described as “landmark.” Garcia had a record of accomplishment: To put himself through school, he had recycled cans and authored a book on dating. He had volunteered his time, tutoring kids and teaching computer skills in Durham and helping to renovate the Biggs Grange Hall. He had passed the bar exam on his first try, which only about half of all test-takers can do.

Journalists from around the United States and other countries were drawn to the story.

Garcia said the arrival of journalists from China who came to Chico “bearing gifts”— an elegant mousepad and a mobile that hangs from the ceiling—surprised him most.

It was during that period that he sometimes found threats or angry messages on his office answering machine, always left late at night. But if he also caught a part of the “national imagination,” he did it with a frank willingness to tell a story that millions of people, who were part of a great modern migration, relate to.

Garcia moves through a room with nervous energy, with the agile strength of someone who has performed outdoor work. During recent interviews, he wore dark glasses to protect his right eye in the aftermath of surgery to treat sun damage. He says he didn’t put on a pair of sunglasses until he was 30—even while he worked in almond orchards with his father, harvested walnuts to pay for schooling, and as a boy, tended cattle near his village of Panindicuaro in the state of Michoacán.

His story begins both there and here, with the connection between the northern Sacramento Valley and northern Michoacán villages in central Mexico. For decades, immigrants from towns like San Antonio Carupo and Panindicuaro have come to the Chico area to harvest, pick, build and paint. In the beginning, they had visas; men were recruited to participate in the Bracero Program that brought guest workers to this country between 1942 and 1964.

Garcia’s father, Salvador Covarrubias, crossed the U.S. border illegally in 1979 with his wife, toddler Sergio, and Sergio’s older brother to work near Chico. Crossing illegally is a desperate measure, Garcia says.

“It’s simply not a decision taken lightly,” he said. “Most people struggle a great deal with the decision to leave their home countries behind. Imagine going to a country where you don’t speak the language, and you have no money in your pocket, no education. You’re risking your life in the process.”

About 1.6 million undocumented immigrants from Mexico live in California, according to Pew Research Center, and that number has been dropping. That’s in part because of record-high deportations, in part because fewer Mexicans have been attempting a border crossing that has become increasingly dangerous and difficult, in part because of economic growth in Mexico.

Still, in a June press release, the U.S. Census Bureau announced that for the first time in its record-keeping, California’s Hispanic population slightly surpassed the white population in 2014, making Hispanics the largest single ethnic group in the state.

When he spoke recently at UCLA, Garcia noted that Latinos are underrepresented in many fields. “We have become the largest group in California, yet that’s not reflected in college graduations, in political representation. It’s not reflected in places of power,” he said he told his audience.

Shades of meaning Garcia is seated at his desk during a recent interview in an office decorated with his framed law license and civil rights awards; he’s maintained an office since 2008, when he began working independently as a paralegal. The nameplate on the door calls his practice “The Law Offices of Sergio Garcia,” and although there’s only one law office, in typical Garcia fashion, he’s thinking ahead. He plans to open offices in larger cities.

He tells me about his Durham High School math teacher, “Mr. Chris,” who told him that to study law, he had to master English. I mention that I’d like to speak to Mr. Chris, and Garcia picks up the phone and calls his former teacher, who has retired in Southern California.

He tells Mr. Chris about his growing practice and his fiancée from Burbank.

“I can finally come see you without worrying about la migra,” Garcia tells Mr. Chris in happy reference to his newly acquired legal status.

Garcia passes me the phone. That’s when I learn the teacher’s name is Lynn Christopherson and that he encouraged Garcia to work on his English during trigonometry class. Garcia was strug-

gling in trigonometry and had a heavy courseload. “I said, ‘Just work on your language skills. They don’t have to know out in the office,’” Christopherson recalled. “He was a hard worker; quiet, conscientious, clean-cut.”

Christopherson, who still helps out in classrooms, then shares his concern about illegal immigration, concerns often voiced in a state undergoing rapid ethnic and cultural transformation. “The law is the law,” he stated, “and we can’t have laws we disregard.”

Christopherson influenced Garcia in another way, too. Christopherson couldn’t roll the R’s in Garcia’s paternal last name, “Covarrubias.” Eager to discourage classmate stares, Garcia encouraged his tongue-tied teacher to use the last name of his mother, Albertina Garcia. He then became “Sergio C. Garcia.”

There were a couple hundred-dollar bills; the rest was in 20s, 10s and 5s. To Garcia, the bills represented both sacrifice and pressure. “I told them, ‘Don’t ever do that again,’” Garcia said. “To raise

that money for me was too much. I couldn’t afford to fail.”

By the summer of 2012, Garcia understood the importance of perception in the highly charged national immigration debate. He had laid down ground rules for media interviews for even the most influential outlets: He would grant the interview only if the reporter promised to avoid terminology that Garcia views as prejudicial and inaccurate, like “illegal immigrant” and “illegal alien.”

Three years later—not just because of Garcia but perhaps in part because of Garcia—many mainstream outlets almost exclusively use “undocumented” or “unauthorized” for immigrants who don’t have legal status. More journalists understand that “illegal” as an adjective or noun may be too sweeping to describe many of the 11 million people from a variety of countries who live in the United States and are working toward legal residency.

Alejandra Miranda, for example, is a dental technician in the Central Valley town of Newman who qualified for the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. It gives her protection from deportation and a work permit for two-year periods. Miranda met Garcia through a Facebook group and says she identified with his drive to succeed.

With his help, all her siblings qualified, too. A lawsuit has so far blocked Obama administration efforts to expand the DACA program.

New laws On Sept. 4, 2013, the state Supreme Court, which oversees attorney licensing, heard Garcia’s case. He had support from California Attorney General Kamala Harris and the state Board of Bar Examiners, but his quest was opposed by the U.S. Department of Justice.

DOJ said that unless the state passed legislation addressing the matter, the licensing would violate 1996 federal law excluding unauthorized immigrants from use of public resources. The court seemed inclined to that position and said it would render a decision in 90 days.

Garcia was worried; the legislative recess was coming and he had three months to resolve a problem related to one of the nation’s toughest issues—immigration. But his cellphone contact list includes people like Sen. Jim Nielsen (R-Gerber) and

By the end of the next week, Assembly Bill 1024, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), giving undocumented immigrants the right to practice law as long as they’re qualified, was sailing through the Legislature. Signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown on Oct. 5, 2013, the bill allows undocumented immigrants to work as sole practitioners or pro bono but doesn’t remove barriers to employment.

On Jan. 2, 2014, the court unanimously ruled that Garcia could be admitted to the bar. This time, Garcia couldn’t fight his tears as he awaited his sisters, who left work to bring champagne and flowers to his office.

“It was roughly 10 in the morning and I was sitting right where I am now in my office,” Garcia recalled.

“After almost five years, it was over.”

In September of last year, another piece of legislation—Senate Bill 1159—was signed into law; it gives immigrants the right to professional licenses if they qualify, regardless of their immigration status. Immigration experts say Garcia’s case probably inspired that law, too, and is one of several legislative changes shaping California immigration policy.

The laws are a reflection of how much California politics have changed during the past 20 years and the extent to which Latino voters have become involved and influential in the political process, said Johnson, the UC Davis law school dean.

One of the problems with federal immigration policy, Johnson said, is the relatively small number of work visas given for lowskilled workers. “Their labor is in demand, but there are very few ways for low-skilled workers to immigrate lawfully to this coun-

“Most studies show there’s very little impact on American workers. A lot of studies show that immigrants come here and contribute to the economy and make the aggregate economy bigger, and that benefits all of us.”

Garcia says he has a few things to do before he pursues his next goal— running for elected office, preferably the governorship—and time is short.

He plans to marry soon, consolidate his law practice, and in five years when he’s eligible, become an American citizen. He has a scholarship foundation, the Sergio C. Garcia Foundation, and is only about halfway to his $100,000 goal.

What would he do as governor?

Unsurprisingly, his response emerges from his particular 20th century American-immigrant experience.

“I would want to make sure every Californian has respect and dignity and the ability to earn decent enough wages that they can take care of their family as long as they’re willing to work like everybody else,” he said. Ω

numbered/named at the gallery), for instance, a landscape of foothills in the desert with a woman and little boy in the foreground with their backs turned to the camera. Other than what looks like a couple of specks that could be people walking in the distance, there’s no indication that there’s a giant art city filled with thousands of party people nearby. In fact, under the overcast sky at dawn (dusk?), the sand of the desert looks cool and grayish-blue, almost like a big lake.

Many of the photos of the art or familiar Burning Man features get taken somewhere new simply by the way Dahlgren chose to frame them. A shiny silver spaceship (“676”) is cropped against a blue sky to look like it might actually be ready for countdown. The giant wooden cathedral is shot at night from the inside looking up at a lit chandelier and the intricately patterned ceiling (“88”) making the scene seem like opening night at a fancy opera house. And many of the portraits feature the subjects pulled away from the bigger scene and artificially lit for striking shots highlighting the individual characters.

Dahlgren used both film and digital cameras in the desert, choosing the former when the dust and blowing sand were too much. And adding extra elements of mood and texture was the fact that he largely used expired rolls of film. As a result,

many took on a ghostly hue once exposed, adding an aged character to some shots and making them seem to be from some long-ago secret Burning Man of the 1960s. One of the best, “266,” is a shot of The Man sculpture at the end of a nearly barren road in what looks like some mysterious dust-choked planet far from Earth.

And my favorite of the film shots was “BCN” (short for “bacon”), featuring two burners literally standing on the edge of “INSANITY” during a dust storm.

There are also plenty of clean, gorgeous digital shots that capture the range of people and expressions: See “676,” the rocket, as well as all of the portraits, as well as a nicely balanced shot of a female burner decked out in a fuzzy hat looking out at players on the playa as a giant bundle of colorful balloons floats against the blue sky (“687”).

Props must be given to the IFL crew for putting together such a fully realized show with Dahlgren despite it being assembled and mounted as a last-minute replacement for a previously scheduled exhibit that fell through. If you hurry, you can catch the full exhibit at the lab one last time, tonight (Aug. 6, 6:30-9:30 p.m.).

After that, the show will be moving downtown to the Winchester Goose (beginning Aug. 11), where the photos will rotate on the walls for the remainder of the month. Ω

FUNK OF 40,000 YEARS The undead of Uncle Dad’s Arts Collective’s 2013 musical-theater production have come back to life, as the fun-loving troupe is preparing to relaunch its original This Is Thriller extravaganza. The music/dance/theater interpretation of Michael Jackson’s iconic 1982 album Thriller was born from the mind of local theater dude Joey Moshiri, who has added some extra scenes to his original work, which now includes an added dance chorus of zombies as well as a larger band (eight-piece) performing the album live during what’s promised to be “a wild ride of music, dance, blood and zombies.” That sounds like more than enough reason to beat it to the Blue Room Theatre for opening night, tonight, Aug. 6.

He was aided by former Troggs guitarist Richard Moore, a genius of guitar tone and phrasing; bassist Jeff Rosso, who formerly toured with blues great Charlie Musselwhite; and seasoned local drummer “Super” Dave Breed. The group presented an appreciative crowd—which included all of the evening’s other musicians—with a wide-ranging set of original blues and Southern rock that demonstrated beyond any doubt that consummate professionalism and fiery musical passion are complementary qualities.

the band, Breed kept on his toes throughout the hour-long set.

Maintaining eye contact with and taking musical and dynamic cues from each player, he supported every nuance of the songs with subtle rhythmic precision. And Moore obviously enjoyed working his guitar magic with such superb companions. His lead playing wove supportively around Huffman’s powerful vocals and soared with inventive melodies during instrumental passages that showed off Huffman’s lead skills as well.

Ending their set with a slow groove, Huffman and band left an enthralled crowd with a reminder of the grace and power of the blues.

After a quick stage makeover, San Francisco’s self-proclaimed “art rock/chamber pop/weirdo” band Growwler brought an entirely different form of musical ingenuity to the stage. During the course of their 40-minute set, the quartet delivered a bounty of artfully orchestrated pop songs that intersected however tangentially the same musical territory explored by a wide range of bands—XTC, Modest Mouse and Scissor Sisters come to mind—in demonstrating the infinite variability of the pop multiverse.

Davidson and band to cap the evening’s convocation of styles with a late-night set of heartfelt songs about whiskey-drinking, loving and overcoming—or at least seeing beyond—personal hardship. The normally solo player was backed by a trio of well-known local players— drummer Daniel Taylor (Cold Blue Mountain, West by Swan), bassist Daniel Nelson and accompanying vocalist Katrina Rodriguez (The Rugs, Duffy’s Sirens).

Davidson played a moody but energized selection of original Americana songs sung with a timbre and declarative power reminiscent of Social Distortion’s Mike Ness. With simply picked and strummed guitar providing the prominent instrumental element, unembellished by electric guitar or keyboards, Davidson’s songs evoked universal emotions with lyrical poetry and sincere singing.

Closing with the slow-burning title song of his latest album, A Wick Burning High, Davidson and Rodriguez’ voices generated a feeling of the camaraderie and sentiment of friends who might not see each other for a while, but who will “keep a light on in the window.” A nice note on which to end a great evening. □

Cruise is once again full of zest and bounce in the role of the central hero. With his mysterious hint of a Mission: grin and a body seemingly lined with Impossible— invisible shock absorbers, he serves Rogue Nation Starring Tom Cruise, mainly as a live-wire action figure in Simon Pegg, Rebecca this hyper kinetically animated carFerguson, Alec toon of an adventure. The action is Baldwin and Jeremy indeed quite lively, but very little of Renner. Directed

by Christopher it feels like genuine live action.

The comic element emerges McQuarrie. Cinemark 14, Feather River mostly from the deadpan approach Cinemas and Paradise to the brazenly “impossible” action Cinema 7. sequences. The script’s attempts at Rated PG-13. verbal humor make little impression, for the most part. The lines themselves are less funny than the throwaway manner in which they’re delivered (Cruise’s insouciant smirk and raised eyebrow, Jeremy Renner’s shrug, etc.).

Benji Dunn, the techie/sidekick played by Simon Pegg, is the heart of the comic matter in every respect.

From the outset, he as much as anyone sets the tone for the film’s abiding combination of rambunctious escapade and high-tech warfare. And he’s the one character in this ebullient fantasy/adventure who maintains some small touch of ordinary humanity.

Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), the film’s heroically resourceful double agent, is a figure of fantasy as well, but with some modestly humanizing differences.

She’s a lethally skilled scrapper, part of the problem for Cruise and company, but also their conveniently opportune rescuer. She’s an almost “plain Jane” operative who somehow becomes much more glamorous when she’s called into violent action.

Sean Harris and Simon McBurney play the story’s chief villains as simpering fraternal twins—they’re transparently devious, warped (if not perverted), dangerously effete, and snidely British, each with a touch of blatant fiendishness. A CIA honcho played by Alec Baldwin is ostensibly their American counterpart, but he’ll be redeemed, partly via the Renner character, who is both “Impossible” and CIA. The “rogue nation” of the title seems to be something called The Syndicate, which is characterized in the film as an inversion or perhaps a perversion or maybe just a pathologically jealous rival of the Impossible Missions Force. The tracks of several reallife “rogue nations” seem plenty evident all over this movie, but McQuarrie/Cruise and company don’t seem to pay them much mind.

But it is at least a little intriguing that this chapter of franchised fantasy leaves so many (metaphorical) land mines in its trail. This is a film that “ends well,” yet everything it does to reassure us could just as easily provoke rampant paranoia. □

Ant-Man

Paul Rudd is Scott Lang, a professional, wisecracking thief given a new lease on life when scientist Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) shows him the wonders of his incredible shrinking suit. Director Peyton Reed (who replaced outgoing early director Edgar Wright) does a good although not outstanding, job. The framework for the movie plays it mighty safe, with an emphasis on family viewing and very little of the offbeat touches that are hallmarks of a Wright affair. After a setup that involves Lang’s release from prison, some business with his ex-wife (Judy Greer) and daughter (Abby Rider Fortson) and a short-lived job at Baskin-Robbins, he winds up in the company of Pym, who is justifiably concerned that his invention has fallen into the wrong hands. His sinister business partner Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) has uncovered Pym’s shrinking technology, and has created his own suit and a new bad-guy persona, Yellowjacket. Lang is hand picked by Pym to break into his own company’s headquarters and steal the new suit.

Rudd is a naturally funny guy who is so good as Lang/Ant-Man, the film would’ve likely been a dud without his presence. Cinemark 14 and Feather River Cinemas. Rated R —B.G.

Mr. Holmes

It’s 1947 and the aged great detective has long since left sleuthing behind. He’s living in semi-solitude in a large country house and he’s trying to write an account of an unexpectedly complicated encounter with a mysterious woman on a long-ago case that still haunts him. Slippages in Holmes’ memories add urgency and suspense to his authorial efforts, and the story itself is a time-shifting mosaic of episodes and character connections. He’s become a devoted beekeeper in retirement and he tries to pass on what he’s learned in that realm to young Roger (Milo Parker), the bright and eager son of Holmes’ rather haughty housemaid, the widowed Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney). Flashbacks fill out the other major story strands: Holmes’ labyrinthian involvement with the mysterious Mrs. Kelmot (Hattie Morahan); and a voyage to Japan. The various shivers of nostalgia for a bucolic past get thoroughly chastened by references to the calamities of two world wars (including especially the bombing of Hiroshima) and by the darker shadings of fine performances by McKellen and Linney. Trainwreck

Comedian Amy Schumer’s first star turn is a mixed affair. Directed by Judd Apatow from Schumer’s script, the film seems uncomfortable in its raunchy romcom skin as it choppily sets up the story of a 30-something party girl whose boozing, one-night-stand lifestyle is threatened when she meets a sweet sports doctor (Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader). However, after the prolonged setup, the film does start to come together in a somewhat surprising way. As the narrative bears down on the serious transition happening in the lives of two sisters (Schumer and Brie Larson) with a dying pops (Colin Quinn), it becomes more of a touching story of a family at a crossroads than a hard-R comedy. And the closing scene is as genuinely romantic as it is ridiculous.

Despite not living up to the level of excellent raunchy satire of Schumer’s Comedy Central show, there are many hilarious moments.

Schumer’s solo-riffing (e.g., poking fun at her sister’s nerdy husband, played by a sweet John Birbiglia) is priceless. And her many comedy guest stars also get a turn in the spotlight—Quinn as her cranky dad in a nursing home, Dave Attell as a wisecracking homeless dude, and NBA star LeBron James is surprisingly good as an intensely involved client/friend of the sports doctor. Crème fraîche is, actually, a cultured cream (cream with bacteria added—like sour cream), and it’s nothing short of wonderful. In Europe, it’s a staple, but the richer, fattier, less-sour crème fraîche is slowly starting to find a home alongside sour cream here in this country.

To describe the subtleties between the various “not a cheese” milk products (let’s throw in Mexico’s crema, Germany’s schmand, and heck, cream cheese and yogurt as well) would be an exercise in boring scientific descriptions of different preparation methods; product consistencies; and gradients of sweet, sour and tart flavors. Just go get some for yourself and use it in place of sour cream in your chili or sauces (crème fraîche never curdles), or for contrasting taste and texture for any sweet treat—fruit, chocolate, or other desserts. I’m confident you’ll find it so appealing you’d eat it with a spoon if given the chance.

One of the most widely available brands of crème fraîche in this area is Bellwether Farms, and the Sonoma County artisan creamery makes some of the best that I’ve tried in California. Any dairy products for which the quality of the milk is the prime consideration is going to produce the best possible cheese—or crème fraîche as the case may be—and the small, family-run creamery/sheep farm (which gets its Jersey cow’s milk from a neighboring dairy) is doing great things with great milk. Bellwether also features many appealinglooking crème fraîche recipes on its website.

To get you started, here’s a great chocolate mousse recipe my wife and I often make (from Carol Clements’ French: Delicious Classic Cuisine Made

Easy), that is greatly complemented by a dollop of crème fraîche before serving.

Bitter chocolate mousse with crème fraîche Ingredients: 8 ounces semisweet chocolate (very dark), chopped 4 tbsp water 2 tbsp orange liqueur (or brandy) 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces 4 eggs, separated 6 tbsp heavy cream 1/4 tsp cream of tartar 3 tbsp superfine sugar Crème fraîche Chocolate (curls, shavings, chips) for topping

Place the chocolate and water in a heavy saucepan (or over a double boiler). Melt over low heat, stirring until smooth. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the liqueur and butter.

With an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks for 2-3 minutes until thick and creamy. Then beat yolks into the melted chocolate until well blended (don’t over mix). Set aside.

Whip the cream until soft peaks form and stir a spoonful into the chocolate mixture to lighten it.

Fold in the remaining cream (again, don’t over mix).

In a clean, grease-free bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the egg whites slowly until frothy. Add the cream of tartar, increase the speed and continue beating until it forms soft peaks. Gradually sprinkle in the sugar and continue beating until mixture is stiff and glossy.

Using a rubber spatula or large metal spoon, stir a quarter of the egg whites into the chocolate mixture, then gently fold in the remaining whites, cutting down to the bottom, along the sides and up to the top in a semicircular motion until they are just combined. (Don’t worry about a few leftover white streaks; better to err on the side of under-mixing.)

Gently spoon into one 8-cup dish or into eight 1-cup dishes. Chill for at least 2 hours until set.

Before serving, spoon a little crème fraîche over the mousse and decorate with chocolate. □

Magnifique Ratatat Because Music Magnifique sounds essentially the same as Ratatat’s previous four albums. Since releasing its seminal, self-titled record in 2004, the intrumental duo has undergone little to no artistic evolution. The production values are greater now, and guitarist/keyboardist Mike Stroud and bassist/keyboardist Evan Mast are a little better at playing their instruments, but Magnifique is exactly what fans have come to love and expect—only the fattest hip-hop beats, head-noddin’ bass lines, dramatic dips and swells of synthesizer, and the exact same two-tone guitar effect. The music is still powerfully emotive sans vocals, often inducing nostalgia (see single “Abrasive”) when it’s not balls-out strutting (“Cream on Chrome”). The record does hold a couple of surprises, most notably the mournful, space-cowboy steel string guitar featured on “Supreme,” and the circusy bounce of “Drift,” but Magnifique is mostly about bringing the party. The sixminute “Nightclub Amnesia,” for instance—with its absolutely nasty stutter-step riff played on velcro-fuzz guitar—is destined for remixing by vodka-slushie-slurping dance-club DJs. Magnifique may be more of the same from Ratatat, but so it should always be.

Men Explain Things to Me Rebecca Solnit Haymarket Books Rebecca Solnit attempts to exit a party when a certain “Mr. Very Important” tries to impress her with knowledge of a “very important book” he hasn’t even read.

It takes Solnit several repeated explanations to get through to him that she is the author of the book in question. The man is speechless.

Punctuated with such witty and clarifying moments, the San Franciscobased writer, historian and activist’s bestselling collection of essays— Men Explain Things to Me (originally released in 2014, with updated paperback coming out this month)—takes on issues of gender, power and “mansplaining” in America. Solnit deciphers entrenched gender inequalities, capturing exemplary moments of the feminist struggle— from women being constantly discredited in conversation, to being silenced by death threats and unable to report sexual assaults. Despite the serious nature of the book’s content, it’s potent with optimism as it looks toward the future of an evolving feminist movement. With the recent federalization of marriage equality ushering in changes to the traditional view of marriage, Solnit’s work is a welcome voice in the ongoing movement for gender equality.

All Around Us Briana Marela Jag jaguwar Singer-songwriter Briana Marela pulls off quite the feat on All Around Us, managing to make a record that simultaneously sounds and feels otherworldly and intimate. Her exploration of the ties that bind us—romance, family, friendship—is done with subtle care and is honest and personal while remaining universally relatable. Guided by an ambient pop sensibility, tracks like “I Don’t Belong to You” and “Surrender” have a euphoric power about them that is irresistible (the latter sounds like an outtake from Jillian Edwards’ Headfirst record). The Enya-like “Dani” stands as the highlight for both its emotional depth and the vast sonic space the song fills. Marela’s alternately sprightly and angelic vocals (get a load of her melodious intro in the first minute or so of “Everything Is New”) create a siren song you won’t be able to refuse. All Around Us is, simply put, a marvelous album, and it’s one you’ll be talking about long after you’ve finished listening to it.

de Lint is a novelist whose stories are influenced by folklore, myths and science fiction. In his book Yarrow, a wizardly character named Toby is skilled at conjuring. He can make small objects appear and disappear, for example. But Toby yearns for more. “I want to be magic,” he says.

“I want to be a friend of elves and live in a tree. I want to marry a moonbeam and hear the stars sing. I don’t want to pretend at magic anymore. I want to be magic.” If you have ever wished for a comparable upgrade, Aries, now is an unusually favorable time to work on it.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): An imagi-

native Welsh man named Liam Bennett has developed a “dausage,” which is a blend of a doughnut and sausage. One of his most requested treats is pork meat stuffed with strawberry jelly. Even if this novel blend doesn’t appeal to your taste buds, it serves as a good prompt for my advice: The coming weeks will be a favorable time to expand your notion of what types of nourishment are fun and healthy for you.

nyone adrift in a sea of mortgage debt, beware the siren call of “foreclosure consultants” and “loan modification experts.” Some are pirates, luring you toward an island of safety and refuge, but it’s a trick. They are intent on crashing you on the rocks and plundering your ship.

If you are “underwater” in your house, watch out for circling loan sharks.

The sharks and pirates we’re talking about here are crooks and plunderers promising loan modifications and foreclosure relief for struggling homeowners. They take money as “fees” for “service” and leave people broke and homeless.

Example: Three California attorneys were busted on 19 felony counts of grand theft, conspiracy and false advertising. These predators advertised loan modification services, claiming to possess “extra leverage” with banks. The attorneys took up-front fees for their “service,” never did a thing and left people to sink further underwater.

In one case, a man was also told his second mortgage would be eliminated. Four months later, the man lost his home to foreclosure.

“Homeowners facing foreclosure are being targeted by predators, including those who use their law license to gain credibility and scam innocent Californians,” said California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris.

Harris is out to nail the scammers. “My office’s Mortgage Fraud Strike Force is dedicated full-time to cracking down on these deceptive practices,” she said.

In California, Harris’ office reminds us, taking up-front fees for foreclosure consulting is illegal.
