Should the city keep Sycamore Pool open this summer? That’s the question

we’re asking this week, after learning the site is being cleaned only every two to three weeks, rather than the weekly scrubdown it used to get.

We found this out only after reading a local blogger’s story about the water there potentially making a member of the public ill. Then we came upon photos of a condom floating in the pool, along with other foul litter. It sounded an alarm for us, and it’s been like pulling teeth to get a straight story from the city.

We finally learned that the change to a biweekly schedule goes back to 2011. But based on a report this week by Howard Hardee (see Newslines, page 8), the only public mention of the stepped-down schedule came in a staff report presented in July of that year to the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission. There was no official public announcement and that lack of transparency is concerning.

Park officials maintain that the pool’s bacterial levels do not exceed the threshold considered unsafe for swimming, and the water is tested weekly. But we also learned that the city is going by county standards that are less stringent than those of the Environmental Protection Agency.

The city’s Park and Natural Resources manager told Hardee that there are signs at the park warning people that they are swimming at their own risk. But we call bullshit. The signs he’s referring to are there to warn people about swimming when lifeguards aren’t on duty. They have nothing to do with the cleanliness of the pool.

After conducting research, there are good reasons to return to a weekly schedule. First of all, considering the city’s longtime practice was cleaning the pool weekly, the public expects it. Additionally, the water these days is warmer and more prone to bacteria, and more swimmers than ever are putting stress on the site. Most important, though, are those EPA standards that the pool has exceeded on at least two occasions this year.

Our advice: Clean it or close it. □

The bigots among us

We said this earlier this year, when a couple of high-schoolers flying the

Confederate flag had a run-in with a local family of color, but it bears repeating this week, in the wake of what’s likely a hate crime against a local couple: Chico has a problem with racism.

As we reported last week (see “Hookahs and hate crimes,” Newslines, July 9), Jenny and Sam Dahma, owners of Fusion Hookah Lounge, have regularly had to deal with unchecked incidents of hate, from racial epithets being shouted at them from passing cars to vandalism of their property. More disturbing was the recent attempt to set the building housing their business on fire.

It’s a scenario unfamiliar to most Chicoans, and that’s simply because most of us in this white-bread town are, well, white. Most residents are not the target of such hateful and ignorant comments, not to mention the potentially life-threatening arson that took place at the Dahmas’ business. But that doesn’t mean these things don’t take place.

The thing about racism is that it’s like a cancer. If it’s not dealt with, it grows. So, what can we do about it? For starters, we can support the Dahmas by patronizing their hookah lounge, an operation the couple have put their life savings into. It would send a message to the bigots in our community that they don’t speak for everyone.

And on an individual basis, we need to challenge the views of bigots. That includes friends, acquaintances and family members, too. If we turn a blind eye to racism, then we’re all complicit in its growth. □

Oversharing is caring The last time I used a public restroom was on a drive to Merced to visit my grandfather. It was just me and my 3-year-old son, Henry, on the nearly four-hour road trip. I was a little fatigued, so I pulled up to a drivethrough and ordered an iced tea I hoped would perk me up.

It did a great job of keeping me awake. A side effect, however, was that the urge to pee came on strong about an hour or so into the trip and I couldn’t avoid heading into a rest stop. With no one to watch Henry, I had to take him in with me.

It was a nightmarish situation most moms can relate to. The stalls in the restrooms off this stretch of I-5 were grimy. Only one of them was fit for use and none had seat covers. What’s worse is that Henry was freaked out and kept trying to sit on the floor. This meant I had to “levitate” while holding both of his wrists with my left hand, and wipe with my right. How’s that for a visual?

The sinks had soap dispensers, but they were empty. I washed with water and, back at the car, popped open a miniature bottle of hand sanitizer and drenched our hands.

There’s a point to me oversharing here. It’s because I just learned that the city of Chico, until recently, didn’t provide soap in public restrooms—at least not the ones in city parks. The only reason soap is being provided now is because of a state Health Department provision that requires it be available at sites with pools. That means the restrooms at One-Mile get soap and so too do those at City Plaza, where the fountain qualifies as a pool-like feature.

I’d never noticed this deficiency because my office is located smack dab between Lower Bidwell Park and City Plaza. When nature calls, I go there.

Speaking of gross stuff, check out Howard Hardee’s news story on the state of Sycamore Pool. City officials say the level of fecal coliform in the water doesn’t exceed unsafe levels. Community members have concerns, though, and we can’t blame them, considering what’s been found there this summer. (Also, before there was soap at One-Mile, where do city officials think people washed their hands?)

Over the past couple years the city stopped its weekly pool-cleaning schedule in favor of every other week. Officials acknowledge that the Park Division is understaffed, but the narrative being played up these days is that the cement swimming hole is clean enough for two weeks. Tell that to the swimmers who photographed a condom floating in there recently or the folks who found a used syringe.

Fact is, more people are using the pool than ever before.

Common sense says cleaning it less often is a bad call. Once again, we’re seeing the effects of a budget that provides too few park staffers to do a weekly scrubdown of a pool in a city whose best feature is its giant green space.

That certainly stinks.

‘How about it?’

Re “Bidwell Ranch’s continuing saga” (Newslines, by Robert Speer, July 9): Bidwell Ranch is the large open space extending north of the entrance of Upper Park.

John Merz of Friends of Bidwell Park is the leader of an effort to add part of it to the existing park. Problem is, Merz and his followers, including Park Manager Dan Efseaff, have a history of leveraging our love of the wildlands into endless environmental studies.

Efseaff was employed doing a study of Bidwell Ranch in 2007, during which he talked about public access (see “Bidwell Ranch’s new life,” Newslines, Feb. 8, 2007), and yet we still aren’t allowed on the property.

Last Tuesday, I told the City Council that Merz and Efseaff are not to be trusted. I said that if we are considering enlarging Bidwell Park we must allow public access first, to test whether they will attempt legal action to block public visitation. I recommended a simple access gate like what we have at Table Mountain, and no further improvements. I also promised to apologize to Merz should my suspicions prove unfounded.

So how about it, John? You and your followers refrain from taking legal action blocking public access to Bidwell Ranch, and I’ll take you to lunch at Grana to say I’m sorry I doubted you.

We were both able to qualify for Social Security disability and Medicare. What a relief to have guaranteed, high-quality, affordable health care, and we were able to keep our health care providers.

From this stressful and frightening health insurance nightmare, my husband and I decided to devote our time and energy to the Butte County Health Care Coalition, whose mission is to support a “Medicare for All” health care system. Three on the commentary Re “Don’t ride on the sidewalks” (Guest comment, by Michele French, July 9): Thank you so much for writing a story regarding the cyclists here in Chico. I think many of the bikers do not understand or know the way to travel through Chico using the bike routes. Yes, bike routes! They are everywhere!

There is no purpose, except spreading bad feelings, for cyclists to ride on the sidewalks.

Also, I have observed many instances of bikers running stop signs. I worry that I will witness, or God forbid be part of, the clueless biker’s major bloody accident. Bikers, please at least stop at stop signs!

Real solutions to Ms. French’s understandable concerns can be found in good planning to build more walkable communities, with protected walking and cycling for all ages and abilities (as in the landmark U.S. Safe Routes to School legislation of 2005, and as in new urbanist models pioneered

State law does not forbid bicyclists from sidewalk riding, but Chico has an ordinance forbidding bicycling and skateboarding in the downtown core only. As bicycling advocates, we generally recommend riding in “the flow of traffic” as the safest approach. We strongly encourage all bicyclists to respect the rights of pedestrians and obey the traffic code at all times.

Chico Velo is currently building a campaign to reduce sidewalk bicycle riding in the downtown core. We also are actively working for a proposed new California law (Assembly Bill 902) that would allow local jurisdictions to implement a ticket-diversion program similar to traffic school for motorists, whereby ticketed bicyclists could go to bike-safety class instead of paying a fine. We believe that programs like these will improve bicyclists’ awareness and make the streets (and sidewalks) safer for all users.

BEWARE THE BITE

While city officials say swimming at Sycamore Pool is currently safe, they acknowledge that drought conditions are encouraging the growth of potentially harmful bacteria.

With the heat comes mosquitoes, and the first of them carrying West Nile virus this season have made their way to Butte County.

Following trends across the state, their numbers are increasing, too.

County officials confirmed their first West Nile-positive mosquitoes earlier this month and less than two weeks later confirmed 12 additional pools carrying WNV insects, all of them in Gridley and Biggs. This is a warning sign that more are yet to come, officials said in a recent Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District press release.

WNV has affected 153 county residents since it first arrived in 2004, and in that time seven people have died from the virus.

To avoid contracting the illness, wear bug repellant, rid your property of standing water and ensure doors and windows have screens. If you suspect a breeding ground, call the mosquito district at 533-6038.

SAN FRANCISCO V. NEVADA

The city of San Francisco’s lawsuit against Nevada over that state’s past policy of busing mental patients out of state can move forward in spite of Nevada’s argument it has sovereign immunity. That comes in the wake of U.S. Supreme Court refusing to hear Nevada’s appeal of California’s Supreme Court, which ruled the case is valid.

Between 2008 and 2013, hundreds of patients were given bus tickets to out-ofstate cities—including 24 to San Francisco—to free up room at Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital in Las Vegas, a practice reported by the Sacramento Bee in April 2013.

Nevada admitted its error in protocol and Rawson-Neal lost accreditation. San Francisco filed a lawsuit seeking about $500,000 from Nevada for medical care, housing and other costs incurred as a result.

Nevada is planning a second appeal, this time arguing that a state government should be immune from lawsuits in other states’ courts.

Chico’s Congregation Beth Israel will soon say goodbye to Rabbi Julie Danan, who will assume leadership of Pleasantville Community Synagogue in Westchester, N.Y., on Aug. 1.

“We’re so excited for her,” said Beth Israel administrator Karen Carter by phone this week. “She gets to go back East, where her grandkids are.”

Danan (pictured) has led the local congregation since 2003. She’s served as president of the Chico Area Interfaith Council and spearheaded the Celebration of Abraham, which brought together Jews, Muslims and Christians.

Beth Israel will employ an interim rabbi while searching for a permanent replacement for Danan. “We’ll have an interim rabbi to help us with solidifying who we are and where we want to go,” Carter said.

A farewell party will be held at the temple July 27. RSVPs are required.

Murky waters Report of swimmer’s infection raises concerns of hygiene, cleaning schedule at Sycamore Pool hough its beauty is without question, some TSycamore would say that actually swimming in Pool is another matter entirely.

That’s the sentiment of a local blogger whose recent posts about a family member—who reportedly conby tracted skin and eye infections Howard after swimming at One-Mile Hardee Recreation Area—made the howardh@ rounds on social media, raising newsreview.com doubts about the cleanliness of Chico’s iconic concrete swimming hole. The stink has also shed light on what many swimmers might not know: For years, Sycamore Pool was cleaned every week on Thursday, but it’s been on a much less regular schedule since July 2011.

The change wasn’t clearly communicated to the public. Its only mention is on a city staff report presented to the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission in July 2011 that doesn’t specifically name Sycamore Pool. It explains that staffing levels had limited the Park Division’s ability to clean the pool on a weekly basis, and that “a full cleaning will occur every two weeks.”

Dan Efseaff, manager of the Park Division, told the CN&R it’s no secret that the pool has been drained and cleaned only once every two or three weeks, depending on need and available staff. Many Bidwell Park users have surely

observed that by walking over the dam on Thursday mornings, he said. Further, his department hasn’t received any complaints about the cleaning schedule of Sycamore Pool—not until the recent report of an allegedly infected swimmer.

The results of testing conducted by the city at Sycamore Pool suggest the water is safe for swimming, but Efseaff acknowledges that the current conditions in Big Chico Creek—low water flow and high temperatures—are ripe for bacterial growth, and predicts the city will close the pool earlier than usual this summer as a result.

On Thursday mornings when the cleaning

does take place, a grate on the shallow end diverts water from Big Chico Creek underneath Sycamore Pool while a crew of four to six city workers uses a street sweeper and pressure-washers to remove algae from slippery surfaces and make small repairs when necessary.

The city removes algae from the pool mostly to minimize the risk of slipping and to keep the water clear so lifeguards can observe swimmers underwater—not necessarily for hygienic purposes—which is why Efseaff says “‘cleaning’ is kind of a misnomer.”

For instance, whereas cleaning most public pools would involve treating the water with chemicals, Sycamore Pool can only be as clean as the rest of the creek.

“The micro-organisms that were in the creek yesterday will likely be there tomorrow, too,” Efseaff said.

After cleaning, how long it takes for the pool to fill back up depends on the time of year. Under normal summer conditions, it’s only a matter of hours. But now, in the midst of California’s ongoing drought and with Big Chico Creek running low even for July—it’s reportedly been disappearing underground on Chico State’s campus, Efseaff said—filling back up takes more than 24 hours.

That’s part of the problem. The low level of the creek ensures that water moves slowly through Sycamore Pool, which is conducive to bacterial growth, said Gabriel Kopp, director of operations at local environmental consulting firm FISHBIO. “If you go to Lake Tahoe, it’s frigid when you get in and the water is super clear,” he explained during a phone interview. “Then you go out to some backwater off the Sacramento River, a pond that’s all mossy and green because

it’s warm. The longer water sits and starts to warm, the better the conditions for the formation of bacteria.”

And greater presence of bacteria such as E. coli, found in human fecal matter, increases the risk of human infection and illness, Kopp said. The city does conduct weekly testing of the water at Sycamore Pool, measuring both total coliform—a broad category of bacteria that aren’t necessarily harmful, but may indicate the presence of pathogenic organisms—and fecal coliform, a specific measure of human waste. Butte County Public Health recommends that water used for recreation not exceed 500 fecal coliform organisms per 100 milliliters. A reading over that threshold calls for a resample and survey for possible sources of contamination, while a sample over 5,000 per 100 milliliters calls for immediate closure of the swimming area.

However, federal recommendations are more stringent. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises that “no more than 10 percent of total samples during any 30-day period exceed 400 per 100 milliliters.”

“The rate of eight cases of illness per 1,000 swimmers is estimated to result from exposures to waters containing … the fecal coliform indicator group at the maximum geometric mean of 200 per 100 milliliters,” the recommendation reads.

On June 30, the date of the most recent sample posted on the city’s website, the water contained 350 fecal coliform organisms per 100 milliliters. And twice, on April 23 and May 9, readings were as high as 540 per 100 milliliters.

While Kopp says that those results are concerning, he warned against drawing dramatic conclusions from a small collection of data. More testing is necessary to “see if there is a steady trend, to see if four or five samples come back really high,” he said. “I imagine that would be their first response.”

The Park Division did collect an additional sample after being informed of the infected swimmer, Efseaff said. The results were the same as the last reading on June 30—350 fecal coliform organisms per 100 milliliters, well under the threshold recommended by Butte County Public Health.

Even so, Efseaff envisions that conditions at Sycamore Pool will only get worse as the summer and the drought deepen.

“With the creek as low as it is, it’s likely we’ll close the pool in a few weeks because we can’t keep up with the algae build-up, the water won’t have much opportunity to move through and the quality of the water coming in might not be that good.” Ω

On July 4, Glenn County Sheriff’s deputies discovered Esquivel-Flores’ body in a farm worker’s shop in Orland with a gunshot wound to the head. The “person of interest” in her death, which has been deemed a homicide, is in custody. But that person of interest, 53-year-old Alfredo Rodriguez Ruvalcaba, has not been charged in her killing. Not yet. Instead, he was taken into custody July 5 on a Butte County warrant for continued sexual assault on a minor. That minor was Esquivel-Flores.

“At age 12, we accused him of grooming her for sexual abuse, which occurred when she was 13 and 14,” Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey explained by phone.

Ruvalcaba was arraigned on Feb. 4, 2013, and released on $1 million bail. When he was next expected in court, later that month, he never showed up.

“That’s the last we heard from him until recently,” Ramsey said. “In between that time, though, we did hear from the bail bondsman who was able to locate him down in Mexico. We looked at extraditing him …

and contacted the U.S. Department of Justice liaison with the Mexican authorities and asked them to assist. But we were told not to waste our time …”

Apparently, Mexico will extradite people only if the crime they committed is also considered a crime in Mexico, Ramsey explained. In that country, the age of consent is 12. “So we were advised to leave the warrant out and not pursue the extradition,” he said. “Then we find out he’s back when he is detained on our warrant by the Glenn County authorities.”

That story in itself is an eyebrow-raiser.

Late on July 5, a day after Esquivel-Flores’ body was found, the Glenn County Sheriff’s

Office received a call of a man lying unconscious in a ditch. That man turned out to be Ruvalcaba.

“We sent our deputies out there and found him unconscious in the ditch,” said Glenn County Sheriff Richard Warren by phone.

“We identified him and realized he was related to the incident we were investigating.”

Ruvalcaba was taken into custody but brought to a medical facility for treatment for his condition, which Warren said he could not specify due to HIPAA regulations. “I can say that he was not the victim of an assault by any other person,” he said, adding that he had a medical condition that was “related to something he’d done to himself or the elements of being out in the weather.”

Ruvalcaba was named the person of interest in Esquivel-Flores’ killing immediately, Warren said.

“The proximity of where he was found was in close relationship with where our victim was found,” he said. “We were able to identify him as the property owner where our victim was found. And there was a history between the victim and him.”

On Tuesday (July 14), Ruvalcaba was released from the medical facility and into Glenn County sheriff’s custody. He will soon be turned over to Butte County on the warrant there, Warren said. He has not yet been charged in the killing of Esquivel-Flores.

“As long as he’s in custody, we’re going to take our time and make sure we’re doing everything properly,” he said. “We don’t want to rush that process.”

For Perkins, the bike in question had a lot of sentimental value; it was a custom, fullcarbon-fiber ride she spent a year buying parts for and piecing together with her husband. Plus, the couple had sold their second car and Perkins’ bike had become her only mode of transporation.

“It’s a unique bike, there’s not another one in Chico like it,” she said. “I was devastated; it wasn’t just a physical object. You can replace a bike, but there was this attachment to it.”

Perkins had since kept her eyes peeled around town and searched for her bike on Craigslist in Chico, Davis and Reno.

So when she got a call from her husband saying her bike was at Greenline, she went straight over.

Before Perkins got to the shop, Lee’s confrontation with the bike thief escalated.

“He said, ‘Don’t touch my bike,’ then he wanted to fight me and I told him, ‘No, we’re calling the cops,’” Lee said. Then the rider jumped off the bike to get the cops himself, flagging down a police officer near City Plaza.

“He thought the law was on his side,” Perkins said.

When Perkins arrived, the thief was handcuffed on the curb. And there, after so long, was her bike—the wheels had been changed and some parts were dinged up, but Perkins knew right away it was hers.

“He kept saying that he had just purchased the bike for $150 and was doing this whole song and dance,” Perkins said, “and I just started crying at this point because I was so excited to see my bike.”

A flier asking citizens to look out for her stolen bike was still hanging inside the store.

Because she’d filed a police report, and the Greenline employees knew her bike well, the police handed it over. (The thief wasn’t arrested because of his claim of purchasing the bike.)

“The credit goes to Greenline and the Chico Police Department,” Perkins said. “I wouldn’t have it back if it wasn’t for them and for them wanting to step in and do what was right.”

Even though Perkins had purchased a replacement bike as soon as hers was stolen last October, she always hoped she’d find her favorite ride.

“When I heard they found it, there was a drop of anger wondering who had it this whole time,” she said. “Then it was mostly gratitude and relief and shock, a lot of shock.

I had a feeling I would get it back.”

world-class salmon, or just take a bunch of selfies at Alaska’s Denali National Park and Preserve.

But, if park officials have their way, those same people will go home with some homework.

The park’s iconic glaciers are melting. Its snowshoe hares are losing their cover. And interpreters don’t mind sharing these warnings about a changing climate and sending visitors away with a directive to be nicer to the Earth when they go home.

According to a recent survey, almost half of people go home heeding the advice.

“The numbers really showed us—the message is clear,” said Langdon Smith, an associate professor and geographer from Slippery Rock University who was the lead author of a new study about the survey and the National Park Service’s climate messaging.

“According to the survey they [the National Park Service] should continue trying to teach people about climate change, the message is going over very well with visitors,” Smith said.

Denali National Park, which is about 240 miles north of Anchorage, is one of the more notable examples in national parks’ shift in tone to educate and spur action on climate change.

The survey, conducted in Denali during the busy month of June 2012, found that 93 percent of the 247 respondents said the National Park Service should teach sustainability and 78 percent said it should teach about climate change.

People learned too—39 percent reported learning more about climate change, and 42 percent said they went home after Denali wanting to do more to reduce the impacts of climate change.

The results suggest “that visiting Denali opened their eyes to some very real consequences of which they were not previously aware and serves as a reminder of the value of national parks as educational landscapes,” wrote Smith and colleagues.

The National Park Service for decades had various programs to reduce its environmental footprint; some were climate-related, and some were not.

But, as climate change projec-

tions became dire, the agency’s position shifted to one of more urgency. In fall 2008, agency Director Jonathon Jarvis testified before Congress about climate change, and “blew it wide open,” said Jeffrey Olson, public affairs officer with the National Park Service.

Jarvis wrote in a 2010 report that he believed climate change to be “fundamentally the greatest threat to the integrity of our national parks that we have ever experienced.”

That spurred the 2012 Green Parks Plan, which went beyond stressing sustainability at just the parks. The plan had familiar environmental directives like “greening” vehicles and reducing emissions but it also pushed to encourage visitors to take such practices back to their communities, a “very purposeful” strategy, Olson said.

“Yes we care about what will happen to the parks, the visitor experience,” Olson said. “But we want people to learn and see things at the park that they can bring home.”

Some of it comes from a purely economic and efficiency standpoint. National parks use a lot of energy. According to Smith’s study, 67,000 structures in the national parks use as much energy as about 15,000 households, costing roughly $44 million.

glaciers, pika habitat problems in the northern Rockies … things like that were poster things, but also things like Joshua trees getting hit, Southwest getting drier, fire seasons starting to change,” Olson said. “We started seeing these severe weather things everyone’s talking about now back in mid2000s.”

Closer to home, at Lassen Volcanic

National Park, visitors are encouraged to take part in the California Phenology Project, which was funded by the NPS Climate Change Response Program. It teaches citizen scientists how to monitor biological changes at the park, data that can then help the park keep track of the effects of climate change.

“Climate change issues facing Lassen Volcanic National Park include change in snow pack and precipitation, shifting wildfire regimes, and species and habitat management,” reads the park’s website.

Olson said, despite the potential for political opposition, the agency will continue keeping climate change at the forefront of its outreach and communication.

“It’s the right thing to do environmentally, and it helps our landscape, visitors and neighboring communities,” Olson said. “We’re trying to do right thing for these 407 parks we have.”

The author of the piece, columnist Allysia Finley, called the finger-sized endangered species “the cause célèbre of environmentalists and bête noire of parched farmers.”

The delta smelt, Finley argued, is the cause of grief and pain for farmers in the San Joaquin Valley because laws protecting the fish have at times restricted the flow of water to orchards and fields.

Indeed, the delta smelt has become perhaps the No. 1 scapegoat during California’s historic drought—the favored whipping boy of the state’s powerful agricultural interests. Those interests have alleged repeatedly that environmental laws designed to save the smelt from extinction are putting San Joaquin Valley farmers out of business.

But Big Ag, along with mainstream and conservative news organizations and politicians, fail to mention a very inconvenient truth: During the drought, the smelt have had nothing to do with water cutbacks from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, the state’s primary source of freshwater.

Rather, pumping restrictions in the delta during the past two years have instead 12

served to protect the drinking water of millions of Californians and numerous farmers in the delta region itself. The pumping restrictions are keeping freshwater flowing through the delta so that salty ocean water cannot push too far inland and ruin water supplies. The restrictions also have been triggered by laws that protect a different fish altogether: salmon.

Although there have been times when smelt protections, first enforced in 2009, have required curtailing water for irrigation, such a scenario hasn’t happened in 27 months. Nonetheless, the delta smelt has remained a powerful propaganda tool for corporate farmers in the almondand-pistachio country of the western San Joaquin Valley, a historically arid zone that now has much to gain by generating public sympathy for growers—and outrage against environmental laws that protect a little fish.

“It’s become almost comical how one species has been so targeted by the media and how the misinformation spreads,” said Steve Martarano of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He said the media has failed for years to tell the whole and accurate story about delta water management, fish and agriculture. And not all who vilify the smelt are ignorant or misled.

“They’re ignoring the truth to create a perception that the smelt is the root of their problems [in the San Joaquin Valley farming regions],” argued John McManus, executive director of the Golden Gate Salmon Association, a group that lobbies for conservation of Central Valley chinook

salmon habitat. “They recognize that the delta smelt is a small unfamiliar species with basically no commercial value and very few friends. There aren’t jobs tied to delta smelt the way there are with salmon, which makes the delta smelt a much easier target. On the other side of salmon, there are workers, jobs, an industry.”

Moreover, even if environmental laws that limit water exports from the delta were eliminated, farmers could not pump every last drop of water from the estuary. That’s because freshwater must be allowed to flow downstream to keep saltwater from encroaching inland.

“When you hear people complain about water being lost to sea, very little of that water is actually delta smelt water,” said Peter Moyle, a fisheries biologist at UC Davis. “Most of it is water that is needed to maintain freshwater in the delta, and also to protect the pumps [that supply the San Joaquin Valley] themselves.”

The delta sits more or less at sea level, which means that saltwater from the ocean has the potential to move inland as far as gravity will allow (all the way past the delta at high tide)—if that physical space was not occupied by freshwater. Only the constant movement of freshwater down the Sacramento River and through the delta keeps the saltwater out. So, to protect irrigation pumps, managers of the state’s water supply constantly monitor river flows to make sure enough freshwater is moving through the delta and into San Pablo and San Francisco bays.

fish species in the delta, is actually extremely valuable. “The delta smelt is by far the most sensitive fish in the [delta] system,” Moyle said. “It’s endemic to the estuary, doesn’t live anywhere else, and it requires a functioning estuary to exist. It is the one species that is affected the most by changes to the system.”

And the system clearly is changing.

Since the 1970s, the delta smelt’s population has been dropping. Annual surveys conducted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife used to find hundreds of the fish through a four-month period.

A series of outings last fall, however, produced just a handful of individuals, and a dragnet survey in April landed just one smelt. Populations of several other native fish species, including chinook salmon, have also plunged.

Moyle said the long-term decline of fish numbers in the delta correlates strongly with a long-term increase in freshwater exports from the estuary. The delta’s major pumping stations kill salmon, smelt and other fish by crushing them against mesh fish screens.

Although farming interests have claimed that an unfair amount of water is being sacrificed to the environment and that farmers have lost their water allocations as a result, this doesn’t accurately characterize the past five decades. In the 1960s, after the delta pumps opened, water diversions from the estuary were about 1.5 million acrefeet a year. But by the early 2000s, water exports amounted to more than 6 million acre-feet in several record years.

Six million acre-feet is about enough water to fill a hollowed out skyscraper that is 1,000 miles tall.

This massive diversion of freshwater from the ecosystem has mostly supported the growth of orchards in the San Joaquin Valley, where almond and other nut farmers are planting millions of trees each year— even in the midst of drought.

Nonetheless, the agriculture lobby continues to insist that water diversions to the arid San Joaquin Valley have not impacted fish populations. Instead, according to mainstream and conservative media and politicians, fish are stealing water from ailing farmers.

“If the delta smelt goes under, we have other fish that will be harder for them to argue are worthless,” Moyle said. “We have steelhead, sturgeon and salmon.

Those kinds of fish people care much more about.” □

What is your podcast about?

I broadcast news that’s not being covered. We are fortunate to live here and have each other as neighbors. “Chico Currents” celebrates that good fortune. It’s me being the change I want to see in the world.

Can you describe the show’s format?

At 7 p.m. for 15 to 30 minutes I interview various members of the community or give my thoughts on local media coverage. I have three main segments: 1) “What Are You Working On,” which focuses on

the music community; 2) “TL;DR” (too long; didn’t read), which is my take on the daily media that people don’t have time for; 3) “For the Record,” where I interview elected or appointed officials.

What types of media critiques do you offer?

It can either be praise or criticism.

I’ve always seen local news and thought, “Why doesn’t someone call them on their shit?” Our media standards have been deteriorating since the advent of Rush Limbaugh and the 24-hour news cycle. But I shine the light on quality reporters too. [Recently] I gave the CN&R’s Jason Cassidy kudos for his coverage on the death of Chico’s man about town, Moondog.

What made you start “Chico Currents”?

A few years ago, Chico’s KZFR radio had an opening for a news director, and I wondered how it would be if I filled it and broadcast interviews with people doing cool stuff. Plus, I’ve been annoyed with the daily media for a while, but the last few years it’s gotten malignant. Chico used to be a magical, welcoming place, but lately the media’s message is, “Chico sucks! It’s filled with drugs and gangs!” For instance, in

2013, a few weeks before Christmas some tweaker got caught shoplifting at a downtown clothes store and Action News Now ran a story with a completely unjustified headline reading, “The demise of downtown?”

Where did you get the skills and know-how for this?

For years I ran my own recording studio downtown, recording radio ads and music. I also surreptitiously recorded Grateful Dead concerts from 1978 to 1995. Plus, I developed good Web skills since I joined the first social media network before the Internet in 1988, called “The Well.”

What are your future plans for “Chico Currents”?

If I get enough listeners, I hope local brands will want to associate with my project—not as advertisers, but as “market good will.” If others want to support me in any way, such as writing, field production or interviewing interesting people, that’s OK. I hope young people will get involved, then get fed up with my style and throw me over the rails and take over.

No, it’s not my name day, though I do share a birth year with one of Chico’s most beloved events: the Saturday farmers’ market. On July 17, 1980, half a dozen or so farmers got together in the parking lot where the Safeway gas station now stands on Mangrove Avenue and they had a sale.

And they continued that sale, moving over the years as it grew, until it became more than an event, a tradition.

When I moved to Chico nine years ago, I was blown away by the Saturday market, even if it required me to be awake and alert before 1 p.m. I’d grown up in the suburbs of St. Louis and had visited the famed Soulard Market downtown only a handful of times. Back then, I had very little appreciation for where my food came from. Then I spent seven years in parts of Southern California where nothing much grows and, quite frankly, if there was a farmers’ market, I wasn’t aware of it.

I think my favorite part of Chico’s market scene—because there most definitely are several markets in this town and its surroundings—is that while it offers an opportunity to get super fresh produce and unique handmade foodstuffs, it’s also a community of its own. You run into friends, family and acquaintances there. You get clued in on town gossip.

Plus, you support your neighbors by purchasing local edibles and crafts.

Over the years, there’ve been plenty of changes at the CCFM. Of course, the market has physically moved a few times. But just last year, it made its current home a little more permanent by signing a six-year franchise agreement on the parking lot at Second and Wall streets. And with that longer contract came some other pretty cool changes.

First, this past March, an extra aisle was added for vendors. That’s an added 30 or so spaces, according to CCFM General Manager Natalie Carter, which allowed some regulars to expand into two spaces and others to open up shop. Some of the new faces include Eckert Malting & Brewing, which brews gluten-free beers, and Air Plant Addict, which sells those cool air plants that need hardly any water.

Plus, “vendors that normally would have been pushed out as the agricultural season gets into full swing get to stay,” Carter told me. So, places like Live Life Juice, which regularly gets my business when I stop by on Saturday, might’ve been replaced by a farmer during the high-yield months but now that there’s an extra aisle, they get to stay—right on!

I know not everyone is on the farmers’ market bandwagon. And that’s OK. But even if I choose not to get out of bed early enough on Saturday to snag some local goodies, I’m comforted to know it’s there, never too far from home.

For those who’d like to celebrate the market’s 35th birthday, head on over this Saturday from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. for some bonus fun. Chef Richie Hirshen will be doing cooking demos from 9 a.m.-noon, there’ll be free birthday cake at 10 a.m., and a free drawing offers promises of a sweet grand prize (tickets at 10:30, drawing at 11 a.m.). Hope to see you there!

RIGHT-TO-DIE DERAILED

California’s right-to-die bill, which passed the state Senate last month, has been tabled after the authors said it wouldn’t pass the Assembly Health Committee.

Senate Bill 128, aka the End of Life Option Act, would legalize the prescription of lethal doses of medication to terminally ill patients, but has faced opposition from lawmakers with deep personal beliefs, according to The Los Angeles Times. The authors gained the support of Health Committee Chairman Rob Bonta (D-Alameda), but couldn’t win over some other members of their party. Assemblyman Freddie Rodriguez (D-Pomona) said he couldn’t reconcile SB 128 with beliefs he developed as an emergency medical technician.

“I was there to help protect and preserve life and give folks a second chance,” he said. “It’s just something I couldn’t come to grips with in this bill.”

Supporters say the bill likely will be taken up again next year.

MORE FRUITS AND VEGGIES

In an effort to encourage shopping at local farmers’ markets on a regular basis, Butte County Public Health has increased the frequency with which families enrolled in its Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program are provided cash vouchers for purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables.

WIC is a program for low-income, pregnant and postpartum women and children up to age 5. Participants receive nutrition education, breastfeeding support and monthly checks for purchasing food at certain grocers, according to a Public Health press release. Previously, families were also provided a $20 voucher once a year to shop at farmers’ markets through the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). Now, mothers participating in WIC will receive $10 each month, while each child will receive $8, to be used at local farmers’ markets.

The program also stands to direct money toward the farming community. Last year, FMNP generated about $17,000 for local farmers.

CALORIE COUNTS POSTPONED

Federal rules that will require chain restaurants with at least 20 locations to include calorie counts on menus won’t go into effect until December 2016, a year later than initially planned.

The rules were included as a provision in the Affordable Care Act, and last November the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued rules that chain restaurants—vending machines, grocery stores, coffee shops and other places that sell food and drinks directly to consumers—post detailed information on calorie content. However, the food industry has put pressure on the FDA to postpone implementation to offer time to develop software for accurate nutrition labeling, to install menu boards and to train staff on the new requirements, according to the Washington Post.

Some public health experts say the delay will allow the food industry to continue lobbying to weaken the rules.

Enloe Medical Center launches new website emphasizing simplicity and privacy

long it’s been since Enloe Medical Center redesigned its Internet presence. Pages have gotten regular content updates, but overall look and functionality have remained essentially static.

Technologically, Enloe’s content management system dates back a dozen years—eons, in the Web world. As Nicole Johansson, Enloe’s marketing and communications manager, noted: “It was time for a change.”

Today (July 16), Enloe plans to go live with the new version of its site. The URL is the same, but everything else will be different.

There’s a new appearance, more consistent with the color palate of Enloe’s buildings and branding. There’s new navigation, making features more accessible. There’s new responsiveness, enabling smartphone users to better view and use pages.

There’s enhanced information, with more prominent details about Enloe services and facilities as well as interactive health education tools for patients.

Plus, there are new functions, including online bill payment, a patient portal and online forms.

Tony Evans, Enloe’s chief information officer, described it as a “modern, fresh website that is optimized for anywhere, anytime access for the mobile world we

live in” featuring “a well-thought-out and seamless design with easy-to-access, precise and clear information.”

That’s no small order.

“There’s a lot of information here—this is a very big, very robust website,” Johansson said. “We wanted to make sure it felt simple and easy to the user.

Hopefully people feel we succeeded in that goal.”

Enloe started the process 18 months ago by examining the sites of other North State hospitals as well as those around the country, along with interviewing Web firms. The redesign team chose AVID Design outside Atlanta, which specializes in health care sites.

“We were feeling like our current website is functional, it works, but we’d outgrown the box,” Johansson said. “The technology was outdated; it was time to see what we could do to provide more engagement opportunities for the community to connect with Enloe.”

The actual building of the site began in December. The launch marks a junction on what Johansson calls “a long road.”

The new site also has a compliance

component, helping Enloe meet terms of the Affordable Care Act known as “Meaningful Use” of electronic health records. The site does this, Evans says, via links to a patient portal, permitting access to information from their personal medical files, and the “modern framework” of information technology that the hospital can “build upon in future years as the Meaningful [Use] requirements continue to evolve.”

The portal is strictly for patients who have been admitted to the hospital, not those seen on an outpatient basis at another Enloe facility. They must register and provide multiple forms of identification before receiving a log-in, and only they can look up their own information.

Enloe has created functionality for patients and prospective patients to submit information, too. Several online forms— currently in test mode—are replacing the need to bring in paperwork or inquire about appointments.

For the Nettleton Mother & Baby Care Center, expectant mothers now can complete and submit the preregistration form through the site. Anyone using the “Find a Doctor” search can use an appointment request to contact the clinic or office.

Enloe is testing the appointment application with the Total Joint Replacement Program. The request goes to a secure database and gets transmitted to the clinic manager through his/her secure Enloe email. A clinic employee will then process the information and reach out to the patient.

Expansion is planned, Evans said: “If the trial goes well, and after there is a better understanding of volume inquiries, we would like to optimize the process, leveraging automation from the point of data entry, so the patient can get near-immediate feedback on appointment availability and confirmation of scheduling.”

Keir Bradshaw, vice president of technology for AVID, said via email that the firm has worked with health care clients for over 15 years and “considers data security in all aspects of the website process.” At Enloe’s site, “private data is protected in transit and at rest,” and the site “will be hosted at a state-of-the-art data center” with measures he said exceed the basic requirements of HIPAA law governing patient privacy and the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council.

A component that’s especially important to Johansson is education. The new site integrates Enloe’s Health eLibrary into every medical specialty page along with offering it as a standalone asset as it previously existed.

Calling it “your own miniature WebMD right on the Enloe website,” she says the eLibrary information is “powered through the same company that powers our inpatient information, so we know the doctors that practice here are standing behind the information that we are sharing with the patients.”

Added Johansson: “It seems counterintuitive for a hospital to educate people to stay out of the hospital, but that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to give you the tools and the knowledge to stay healthy. That’s exactly what this website does: It helps you stay well, be well, choose well.” □

WEEKLY DOSE Fast food vs. sit-down While popular wisdom holds that fast food is less healthy than eating at a sit-down restaurant, that may not always be true. Findings recently published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition show that, while eating at both fast-food and full-service restaurants is less healthy than cooking at home, dishes at regular restaurants scored worse than fast food when it came to cholesterol and sodium intake. Still, the study’s authors found that full-service restaurants are healthier in terms of providing vitamins such as B6, vitamin E, vitamin K, copper and zinc, as well as potassium and omega-3 fatty acids.

Furthermore, fast-food meals contain an excess of saturated fat and significantly more sugar than those at sit-down restaurants.

lthough it’s been nearly three decades since Edward Abbey drained his last can of beer and flung it onto a Forest Service byway, the author’s suasive prose and thorny legacy still thrive within certain enclaves, including those of the disaffected youth, thank goodness, who seem to arrive with each generation like the hardy grasses that poke through buckled concrete.

By the time they find Abbey, they’ve dispatched their Thoreau and von Mises, and they’re thirsty for stouter brew. (We’ll forgive them their latemodel SUVs and Sprinter vans.) To them, Desert Solitaire and The Monkey Wrench Gang are as necessary a worldview additive as Jack Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums, and some, charmed by Abbey’s not-so-subtle call to agitate, have Googled up the public domain copy of “Ecodefense: A Field Guide to Monkeywrenching,” compiled by “Various Authors,” like “T.O. Hellenbach” (but actually written by Abbey’s best-known disciple, Dave Foreman, the founder of Earth First!).

Whether these latter-day eco-warriors have employed the necessary hammers, wrenches and granulated sugar to wreak destruction on various species of Caterpillar, they’re not saying. Perhaps more inspired by Bill McKibben’s call for a sensible middle path, they’ve traded hardware for social media and video cameras, which are probably stickier stuff than Karo Syrup five decades removed

from the more physical strain of civil disobedience that once swept the country.

All the same, you can almost hear Abbey wailing from the depths of his unmarked grave, “What we need here is a little precision earthquake.” Fortunately, many still have their ears to the ground. After 26 years of repose under the hardpan of the Dark Head Wilderness, a temblor of sorts has disinterred Abbey’s spirit, and he’s being feted more this year than any other in recent memory. Apparently, Abbey is needed.

only possesses a—gasp—sense of humor, but who also boldly paddles and wades into the raw material he celebrates in his writing, has been blogging about Abbey as of late in anticipation of the book’s release. In a recent piece for Orion Magazine, he describes the 130-page file the FBI compiled on Abbey, and ponders how Cactus Ed would have fared in post-9/11 society; he surmises that Abbey could have found himself behind bars. As for Abbey’s relevance and sustained appeal, indeed; Gessner gives a nod to those who still read him and the millions who have been inspired by him, including his own self.

—of Abbey’s alma mater—released Sean Prentiss’ Finding Abbey: The Search for Edward Abbey and His Hidden Desert Grave, a travelogue-cum-memoir-cumbiography in which Prentiss describes his quest to, well, find Abbey’s hidden desert grave. Prentiss, an environmental writer and assistant professor at Vermont’s Norwich University, logged 7,000 miles trailing Abbey’s literary spoor, from his birthplace in Pennsylvania to his current place of repose somewhere in Arizona.

He meets up with several of Abbey’s cronies—Jack Loeffler, Dave Petersen and Ken Sleight (aka Seldom Seen Smith)—and listens as they explain how Abbey’s worldview affected their own.

“Just having a wilderness to disappear into, when you’re in outlaw environmentalist mode, is a comforting thought,” Loeffler tells

Prentiss. Does Prentiss find Abbey’s grave?

You’ll have to read the book to find out, but it would appear that Prentiss found something more about himself as he crisscrossed the backroads of the desert Southwest.

Abbey appears on film this year in at least two features and an animated short. First, he makes a cameo in Yvon Chouinard’s new award-winning documentary, DamNation, a film that deconstructs the pseudo-science that spurred the construction of 75,000 dams in this country. The film, which for its blending of history and artistry is deserving of the accolades being heaped upon it, should have been dedicated to Abbey, because the movie’s denouement was directly inspired by his writing.

But it’s not until an hour into the film that we catch a glimpse of him, standing atop a parapet downstream of the Glen Canyon Dam, calmly advocating for “sabotage and

subversion as a last resort,” in his stiffjawed baritone. Who knew the guy was so photogenic? Scrap the beard, and he’s a cross between Gary Cooper and Gregory Peck, with a voice like the latter’s. This Abbeyinspired documentary, which is as beautiful as it is educational, is worth seeing for no other reason than to watch the stunning Katie Lee and friends cavorting through “the place no one knew,” the magical stretch of the Colorado so poignantly described by Abbey in Desert Solitaire, now submerged due to the Glen Canyon Dam. The organizers of this year’s Wild and Scenic Film Festival screened a two-minute short, A Line in the Sand, produced by Justin Clifton and Chris Cresci and created by motion graphics and 3-D artists Barry Thompson and Eric Bucy of Half Wild Studios. Channeling environmentalists Edward Abbey and Wallace Stegner

he writer, professor and environmental provocateur David TCarolina Gessner lounges in his writing shack out back of his North house, a non-smartphone to his ear, a Ranger pale ale in his belly, and another in his hand. We’re chatting about his latest book, All the Wild That Remains, his encomium to two giants of American literature, Edward Abbey and Wallace Stegner.

The shack’s windows face an expansive marshland cut by the turbid waters of Hewletts Creek, a slow-moving stream that flows east to the Atlantic by way of the Intercoastal Waterway, through which Gessner occasionally kayaks, or plunges into headfirst. I imagine his flip-flopped feet propped up on his writing desk amid a scrum of dog-eared books and that morning’s writing as the sun sets behind the ornate cupolas of the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, 10 or so miles to the west, where he teaches literature and creative writing most days.

When I last saw him in Reno, he had forgotten to pack a belt, so his trousers were secured with a hank of clothesline, Jethro Bodine style, and he read huskily from All the Wild That Remains to a packed lecture hall at the university.

He also paid a visit to ecocritic Michael Branch’s seminar in environmental literature and humor, where I was lurking as a student, and he discussed the state of the nature-writing art, the new book, and his eight others, including the genre-bending, anti-Thoreauvian Sick of Nature.

With All the Wild That Remains, Gessner has limned a quest for truth, and perhaps a bit of redemption, as he peers through the eyes of wise and voluble elders whose voices live through the printed word. As such, it’s a classically Western construct, and Gessner, no shrinking violet, asks tough questions and doesn’t shy away from delivering the news.

That he would tackle Abbey and Stegner at a time when the West confronts massive drought and the Sierra Nevada snowpack is the leanest in recorded history seems especially propitious, given that both authors propounded on the aridity of the West, and questioned the sustainability of life west of the Hundredth Meridian.

Stegner presaged that the lack of western water would risk the region’s livability, and worried that one day its thirsty chickens would come home to roost. Abbey shook his head and rolled his eyes as he witnessed road building, dam construction and nonstop development, and worried, strenuously, that the many mouths and prodigious thirst of an ever-growing citizenry out West would outstrip nature’s supply, and prove the ruination of the landscape he deemed sacred.

He decried growth, procreation and man’s presumed dominion over nature. Both men lived in the West for most of their lives, Stegner in a home in the Los Altos Hills near Stanford University, and Abbey variously in New Mexico, Utah and Arizona, which is where he died. practices; both made persuasive cases for wild domains as havens of saneness in an ever-lunatic world—Abbey, prominently, through his books, like The Monkey Wrench Gang, and Stegner more quietly but no less effectively through his many novels, his famous “Wilderness Letter,” and the assistance he gave to thenSecretary of the Interior Stewart Udall in crafting verbiage that would inform the 1964 Wilderness Bill.

The writings of both men changed lives—in Abbey’s case, perhaps, the taking up of arms, and in Stegner’s case, “connecting the dots,” as Gessner puts it, between “land, economy, resources, geographies and cultures,” a mental model taken to heart by at least one of the country’s most influential spokespeople for wilderness, Wendell Berry, whom Gessner visits early on in the story. Berry credits both Abbey and Stegner for “lighting his way” as a writer, but perhaps it was Stegner who influenced him most, because, as Gessner quotes, “Wendell Berry had said he wanted to take Stegner’s ideas and try them out in his own neck of the woods … .”

Fast-forward to Gessner’s American West. All the Wild That Remains doesn’t just confront the ravages on the landscape due to climate change. As literary heir to both Thoreau (whom Gessner once described to his daughter as “the man who ruined daddy’s life”) and Michel de Montaigne, Gessner has used his books as a kind of gestalt.

He of course owes a literary debt to Stegner and Abbey: Gessner is inspired by Abbey’s inclination to disturb the system and also Stegner’s inclination to work within it.

Gessner harks to the voice of a renegade but also to the voice of a buttoned-down professor. EarthFirst! vs. the Sierra Club. Dylan vs. Seeger.

Abbey and Stegner were two of the most resounding of the many voices that have rung through the American West, ultimately conjoined in their philosophies, and it’s this dynamic yin-yang Gessner attempts to reconcile in the book.

At the beginning of his journey west, Gessner received an email from environmental writer Terry Tempest Williams, who offered what Gessner called a koan of sorts. She characterized Stegner as the radical and Abbey as the conservative, a notion inverse to the one most people hold about the two men. Gessner periodically revisits Tempest Williams’ proposition in the book, and concludes that Stegner’s radicalism stemmed from his rootedness and devotion to home and work and family—steadfast and resolute—rather than restlessly searching for the Big Rock Candy Mountain.

“Wilderness is our first home,” writes Gessner, “the laboratory where human beings were created, where the human genome was hammered out over millennia, and that essence does not suddenly change in a hundred years because someone invented a car or computer. Our needs are still the same.”

Indeed, in All the Wild That Remains, Gessner makes clear, as did both Abbey and Stegner, that a little bit of wild goes a long way.

Finally, Abbey stars in Wrenched, a

90-minute feature film by director ML Lincoln, which describes the arc of the environmental direct action movement, aka monkey-wrenching, inspired in large part by the book of the same name. While Wrenched isn’t exactly a biopic, Abbey plays a central role as the one literary agitator to rule them all. Loeffler and Sleight are joined by Dave Foreman, Doug Peacock, Robert Redford, R. Crumb, Terry TempestWilliams and bookstore owner Ken Sanders, among others, to discuss Abbey’s influence on the movement.

“I started reading Edward Abbey when I was 18,” said Tim DeChristopher, a Gen-Xer known as “bidder 70” who committed financial fraud to protect land threatened by oil and gas extraction. “I was old enough to understand it, but not quite old enough to realize that it wasn’t a manual.”

Which brings us right back to Gessner, who claims that those who have walked Abbey’s path, like others inspired by the prose of powerful writers, were perhaps looking for something like a father figure. “A hunger for models. For possibilities. For how to be in the world.”

Abbey, for his part, wanted none of it. Sounding a lot like Bob Dylan, Abbey called himself an entertainer. “I have no desire to be a leader of any kind. I dislike being called a guru.

I think every man should be his own guru. Every woman their own gurette. We should all be leaders.”

“Most humans do not have the self-control to refrain from using that power,” Abbey told his friend Loeffler in a taped interview.

Gessner is a kind of nature writer gone wild, although he’s exquisitely self-aware, brutally honest about his own peccadilloes, and like Abbey, he takes literary risks. While he falls well short of advocating for the destruction of amortizable assets, he’s the guy who dished on Thoreauvian nature writing as an exercise in preaching to the converted. Here he acts as a literary historiographer who stops short of tracking his quarry to his final resting place.

“I knew I would likely be able to find the spot,” writes Gessner of Abbey’s tomb. “I had good contacts, old friends of Ed’s, and thought it wouldn’t be too hard to figure out the location. But when I got to the Abbey library in Tucson, I changed my mind. … I decided, finally, that I would let the poor man rest in peace.” Ω Rest in peace? Not this year.

Amarok (Chico, doom/sludge): Like Poseidon upending Odysseus, the menacing, slow-churning waves of distortion will test the sea legs of the hardiest of doom warriors.

Drag Me Under (Reno, Nev., metal/punk/Southern): “Southern metal.” That’s a new one for me. It’s like Southern rock only faster (they should just call it “Motorhead!”), and this Reno crew has enough monster riffs and energy to be able to follow Lemmy into battle.

Wander (San Leandro, post-rock): The name is the clue, and the sound—an uptempo take on fuzzy, swirling shoegaze mixed with the explorations of Explosions in the Sky—is an instrumental soundtrack in which one can easily get lost.

Deep Sea Thunderbeast (San Diego, doom/sludge): The ocean is a very dark place in the middle of night, and adding garage-rock riffs and psychedelic meanderings to the sludge makes for one super-stoney voyage of doom.

Vexed (Redding, grindcore/hardcore/powerviolence): Lead singer Izabella Hilsee is riding a runaway Ferris wheel as it spins down the mountainside picking up flailing moshers along the way.

Smak City (Magalia, metal/hardcore/rap): Fun and dirty metal riffs, songs about cuddle boners, rapping(!) and FBI-baiting lyrics: “Set the whole building ablaze, then sit back and watch … Burn! Burn!

So it was that Colette and I found ourselves at Bidwell Park Golf Course one recent summer morning. I’d worn my plaid shorts, some argyle socks, a microstripe polo by Walter Hagen Essentials, and my favorite Tommy Hilfiger visor. Unfortunately, my saddle shoes with the sharp thingies on the soles hadn’t arrived from Amazon yet.

“This way,” Colette said, as we walked across the parking lot. “Looks like the pro shop is over here.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” I said.

“Not so fast.”

“What?” ★★★★★ “Look, Bidwell Bar & Grill.”

bar and a tempting breakfast and lunch menu on the wall. Long floor-to-ceiling windows looking out at the golf course and a patio with a couple of tables.

“I’ll have a bloody Mary,” I said. “Sis?” She shook her head in resignation. “Water, I guess.”

“You know,” I said. “I think we should just watch some golf first. Besides, I’m hungry. Let’s eat, then play.”

“I guess I could go for some breakfast,” she said.

I ordered the golfers breakfast burrito ($5.95), and she ordered the three-egg omelet ($6.95). We took our drinks out to the patio and sat in the shade as golf carts purred by.

“Look,” Colette said. “Deer. Over there.”

Indeed, two small deer walked right across the lawn between two groups of golf players, almost right in front of us.

Our breakfasts came out shortly, and my burrito was excellent—eggs, onions, bell peppers and a delicious salsa wrapped in a huge flour tortilla.

Colette’s omelet was good, too—cheese, onions and bell peppers (comes with a choice of meat, but she’d ordered it without).

“This is pretty respectable for a little grill at a golf course,” she said. “Plus, this would be a great place to come if you’ve been hiking in Upper Park.”

“You’ve?”

“Well, if one has, Daniel Boone.”

I sat back, stuffed. “You know what I just realized?” I said. “I totally forgot sunscreen. I can’t go out there without sunscreen. We should come back.

I’m gonna get another bloody.”

“You made me drive all the way out here, and you got all dudded up like that, and now you don’t even want to play?”

I shrugged. “It’s getting hot.”

“OK,” she said. “Whatever.”

We ended up staying another hour, and, to her credit, Colette got a pint of Sierra Nevada Summerfest.

And we’ve been back—several times. The turkey Caesar wrap ($5.95): delish. The grilled-chicken sandwich ($8.95): very tasty, though I’ll probably have them serve it on sourdough next time, as the Wonder Bread-y bun was rather mushy. Colette said next time she’d order salsa on her breakfast sandwich ($4.95) as the one she ordered needed something to “liven it up.”

Maybe this fall, when it cools down, we’ll try golfing again. Besides, my spikers will be here by then. □

‘That cruddy sound’ Paradise guitar builder finds that good old tone in cigar boxes

Ken Smith The owner of ONESIXTWO Cigar Box Guitars was explainkens@ newsrev iew.c om ing how his love of raw, unique sounds led him to start researching, buying, collecting and refurbishing what he called “junker� guitars—old department store and catalog off-brand instruments that “serious� musicians initially balked at. Of course, many have since become members of a devout cult of connoisseurs.

Shaver is a musician himself, and his obsession with the instruments extended to the people who played them. This led him to the revelatory personal discovery of Seasick Steve, an Oakland-based modern-primitive bluesman with a well-known penchant for altered, antique and hand-built instruments. Steve’s signature guitar is a beat-to-hell off-brand electric with only three strings called the “Trance Wonder� that the musician himself lovingly calls “the biggest piece of shit in the world, I swear.�

Finding Seasick Steve’s music led Shaver further down the research rabbit hole, following intersecting tunnels dedicated to three- and fourstringed guitars, blues history and biographies of the genre’s pioneers. All tunnels eventually led to cigar-box guitars, instruments handmade by cashstrapped musicians as far back as the 1800s, and for which interest has resurfaced in recent years. “The fact that people can make this cool music off of something so primitive amazed me,� Shaver said during a recent interview. “It’s just a box with a piece of wood going through it and some strings, but the tones and music you can get out of these things just blew me away. I thought, ‘That’s something I could build, and start to make that type of noise myself.’�

Shaver had developed the appropriate skill set through his tinkering with junkers and many years

of remodeling and construction experience. He and a friend used to run a small business in Sacramento, building cabinets and custom furniture, so at the time he had plenty of scrap wood to get started, and he finished his first cigar-box guitar in early 2008. “I was blown away by how it played,â€? Shaver said of the instrument, which he still keeps and occasionally plays. “It wasn’t great by any means—the action was really high, it doesn’t stay in tune great—but it plays, and I plugged it in and it was amplifiable, and it made music. When I play it now I think, ‘Wow, that’s a junky guitar ‌’ but it looks super cool, like something that was made in the 1920s.â€?

Shaver started building obsessively, making the instruments more playable and experimenting with different materials—license plates and hubcaps for resonators; gas cans, candy tins and, of course, an ever-expanding collection of new and vintage cigar boxes for the instruments’ bodies. He also began building portable, battery-operated amplifiers, sometimes with themes and materials matching particular instruments (his latest project is several customordered Star Wars-themed instruments and amps). “I initially started selling them out of necessity, because I’d built so many that they started piling up,� he said.

Shaver moved to Paradise a few years ago and now builds instruments full-time, which he sells on his website (www.onesixtwocbgs.com) and at various markets and festivals throughout Northern California.

He also keeps a steady stock at Paradise antique shop Aunt Mabel’s General Store, and the instruments he builds—each of which can be appreciated as a work of art as well as a working instrument—intermittently grace the walls of Chico’s Morning Thunder CafÊ.

Shaver said that, with the variety of materials he scavenges and brings together, each new project presents different challenges, and he’s always looking for the next; topping his list of materials he wants to acquire and turn into instruments are a motorcycle gas tank and an automobile muffler. “Building each instrument is a unique process and some take a little more thought and engineering,â€? he said. “I’m always looking at things and trying to figure out how it’s gonna work, but so far I’ve been able to complete the task.â€? â–Ą

Tshtick own computer-animated film with Minions, and their is fun for a while, but not enough to sustain an he little yellow things from Despicable Me get their

entire feature film.

Things start funny enough with a brief history of the Minions since the beginning of time. As their name by implies, they’ve always wanted to be Bob Grimm henchman, and they are attracted to bad bobg@ guys, so we see a lot of their previous newsreview.com unlucky bosses (Dracula, T. Rex, Napoleon, etc.). The Minions wind up settling north and worshipping the Abominable Snowman when three of them (Stuart, Kevin and Bob) decide to head out on a journey to look for a new master.

Minions Their travels take them to New York Starring the voices of in 1968 (the year of my birth and Sandra Bullock, arguably one of the worst years in AmerJon Hamm and ican history). The pop-culture references Michael Keaton. when they first arrive, including a fanDirected by Kyle Balda and tastic Richard Nixon billboard and The Pierre Coffin. Dating Game, are well done. The movie Cinemark 14, has a cool MAD Magazine vibe going Feather River for it in its first half.

Cinemas and Things start going off the rails a little Paradise bit when the trio leave New York for Cinema 7.

Rated PG. Orlando, Fla., where they seek out the world’s greatest villainesse, Scarlett Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock) at something akin to Comic Con for villains. She has some cockamamie scheme for the Minions to steal the Queen of England’s crown. So they all travel to England, where things get even wackier.

Perhaps the best thing about the movie is the Queen (Jennifer Saunders), portrayed as a happy-go-lucky

goofball who remains entirely good natured even when she loses her crown and the throne to Overkill due to a technicality. In fact, the film really lights up when the Queen is in the room, and it could’ve used more of her.

As for the Minions themselves, they get a little grating after the first 45 minutes. The banana joke is funny for the first seven times or so, but it grows a little tired around the 1,756th time it’s told. They speak that strange Minions gibberish language and, that too, is funny for a little while, but trying to figure out what they are saying all of the time gets a little exhausting. As for when I could figure out what they were sort of saying, well, it just wasn’t that funny.

By the time one of the Minions grows to the size of King Kong and terrorizes London, I’m thinking many adult eyes have glazed over. Other than a few teases, Minions is strictly a kiddie affair for most of its running time.

Bullock’s super villain isn’t all that interesting and neither is her husband (voiced by Jon Hamm). Michael Keaton and Allison Janney take part in one of the film’s more amusing sequences, voicing parents who take their children on armed robberies.

The film does have a little, sick fun with the back history of the Minions. Most of their masters before Gru (Steve Carell’s character in Despicable Me) are accidentally killed. They manage to get a caveman eaten by a big bear, they blow up Dracula, they crush the Abominable Snowman, etc. Seeing powerful and nefarious male figures as no match for the Minions is good for a laugh or two.

And the screening I saw had plenty of kids guffawing, and that’s really what this thing is supposed to do, right? Make kids laugh and give them something to drive their folks crazy with until school starts up. And parents, start gearing up to buy a lot of yellow over the next few months. Ω

a couple of the brides are fully capable of defending themselves, as are the wizened lady bikers who turn up late in the action. The film’s macho feminism is dramatized via the brief, fugitive partnership of Furiosa and Max. As such, it stands as the latest of the thematic crosscurrents that mark the continuing evolution of the series’ testosteronefueled fantasies. Max plays a key role in the lady warriors’ survival, but he must walk away from the community he has helped preserve. That said, Fury Road is every bit as brutal and rambunctious as its predecessors. While it uses more CGI than some early reviews might lead you to believe, it has fierce, muscular intensity to its stunt-heavy action sequences, and a strikingly visceral sense of human flesh in its portraiture.

All is Illusory The Velvet Teen Topshelf Records In the early 2000s, Santa Rosa’s The Velvet Teen seemed poised to become, if not the next big thing, at the very least a next big thing. The band’s first full-length, 2002’s Out of the Fierce Parade, set the band squarely on a path to indie rock stardom, with its huge melodies and a tastefully guitar-driven sound supporting frontman Judah Nagler’s impressively melismatic vocal delivery. But the band had other plans. The Velvet Teen’s next two albums, Elysium and 2006’s Cum Laude! (the latter being the first to feature current drummer and former Chicoan Casey Deitz) were notable for sounding not a whole lot like the band’s previous work, or each other. Nine years later, The Velvet Teen has come full circle. All Is Illusory successfully blends the experimental approach of later records with the pop sensibilities of the band’s early efforts for a juggernaut album. Deitz’s drumming has emerged as an equally compelling lead instrument, complementing Nagler’s refreshingly unobscured vocals. The band still takes plenty of chances musically, such as the 10-plus-minute “Taken Over.” But All Is Illusory is the sound of a band whose members have nothing left to prove beyond, perhaps, that they can still write a hell of a rock song.

Pianist Ran Blake, who just turned 80, has designed this “audiobiographical homage” to musical theorist and composer George Russell. Russell’s mostly noted for having devised the theories of modal improvisation that inspired Miles Davis to come up with his groundbreaking Kind of Blue album. Blake is a rather whimsical player and among this CD’s highlights are his solo treatments of “Autumn in New York,” Russell’s “Ezz-Thetic” and Blake’s “Jacques Crawls.” Things start jumping when Blake—an educator at the New England Conservatory (where Russell was one of his colleagues)—is joined by some alumni on violin, trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, bass and drums on a selection of Russell’s compositions, such as “Jack’s Blues” and “Lonely Place,” that feature them playing parts instead of riffing off of each other as “mainstream” musicians do. This is why the NEC is, thanks to the late Gunther Schuller who founded it, the home of what’s known as “third stream jazz,” a synthesis of jazz and classical forms.

Among the more bizarre tunes are a deranged version of “You Are My Sunshine,” complete with violin and pedal steel guitar, and Blake’s “Biography,” which includes Luke Moldof on “electronics.”

Rookie in the Ring Hanna Rae Self-distributed There’s something fresh about Hanna Rae, despite her music treading familiar territory.

Singer-songwriter pop-country isn’t exactly a new phenomenon, but Rae injects the five songs on Rookie in the Ring with loads of power and creativity. Relationships are the focus—particularly on the stripped-down piano opener “Man in the Moon”—and throughout the album, Rae’s penchant for clever lyrics kicks the material up a notch. On the bluegrass-tinged “Alabama” she employs a number of creative similes—“like a Rubik’s cube with no solution/or the planets without revolution”—as a means of calling out someone’s emotionally stunted nature. And when she drops lines like “your left hook of love came out of nowhere and knocked me out” on the title track, the image leaves a mark. Rae’s molasses-thick drawl provides an earthy foundation that grounds the album’s most pie-in-the-sky moment, the Americana/pop tune “Jar of Wine” (which sounds incredibly similar to Brooke Annibale’s “Under Streetlights”). It’s tough trying to write something new in the realm of love songs, but for the most part Rae succeeds. She’s an under-the-radar artist to keep an eye on.

Arts + Ideas magazine and he’s pretty stoked (pick up your own at the University Box Office or Bell Memorial Union). The 2015-16 school year’s calendar of arts programming from the School of the Arts, North State Symphony and Chico Performances is really packed. There’s the SOA’s usual overflowing

schedule of student- and staff-produced plays (a couple of adventurous/fun choices—Reefer Madness and the 300-year-old English Restoration comedy The Rover), art exhibits and concerts (I have my eye on Lloyd Roby’s multihorn recital Feb. 19!), and this year also marks the debut of the North State Symphony’s new conductor/director, Scott Seaton. For now, I want to share a few of my personal highlights from a typically diverse Chico Performances schedule (CP donor/member ticket sales begin July 29; series tickets on Aug. 8; and individual tickets on Aug. 17):

Sept. 9: W. Kamau Bell: Comedy badass brings his Ending Racism in About an Hour stand-up manifesto/diatribe to town.

Sept. 11: John Hiatt & The Combo and the Taj Mahal Trio: One of the greatest American country/rock singer/songwriters of the last four decades and one of the most influential blues/world musicians ever. On the same stage. On the same night.

Oct. 4: The Milk Carton Kids: This folk revivalist duo gets compared to Simon & Garfunkel at times, and while the songwriting might not be quite to that level, the guitar playing and harmonizing vocals are pretty damn close.

Nov. 3: Lake Street Dive: It’s surprising to say this about a band that moves in the polite circles of adultcontemporary radio and NPR, but this Boston-born quartet (vocals, standup bass, guitar/ trumpet, drums) is the ultimate dive-bar band. They’re super energetic and have a powerful female lead singer, they have dynamic chemistry and can play any style. And when it comes to covers, rather than merely mimic the original, they rip it Lake Street Dive apart and throw themselves into something fresh and new.

Since Laxson isn’t exactly the Maltese, it’s up to you, Chico, to bring some energy to the room for them to feed off of. This is AD’s pick of the season.

Nov. 17: Melissa Etheridge: Every year, there is one huge show on the CP schedule that I couldn’t care less about (but nonetheless feel the need to highlight). And every year there is one of my opinions that nearly everyone in Chico couldn’t care less about. Here you have both.

Feb. 13: Queen: A Night at the Opera, Uncle Dad’s Art Collective: Dude! What a wonderful surprise. The local kids of Uncle Dad’s are on the Chico Performances schedule, and they’re bringing some local friends with them to perform Queen’s grandiose masterpiece in its entirety. Epic!

March 5: Triplets of Belleville: Led by the film’s composer, Benoît Charest, the eight-piece Le Terrible Orchestre de Belleville will perform the music and sound effects live during a screening of the film. This is going to be rad.

March 26: Three Acts, Two Dancers, One Radio Host: Choreographer Monica Bill Barnes and This American Life host Ira Glass bring dance and radio together. Because, of course.

Law Number One: “If you slam the front door of a house with sufficient force, it will cause the interior walls of that house to vibrate to the extent that a shelf as far away as 24 feet from the point of impact will eject a vase from its surface and send it crashing to the floor below.”

Law Number Two: “If all the windows and doors in an airtight house are closed, and you turn on the whole house fan, and if that whole house fan is of sufficient size and capacity, it will cause an air suction of such force so as to cause ashes from within a fireplace to be instantly sucked out through the fireplace opening with the appearance of confetti shot from a cannon. A 12-foot radius of flooring in front of the fireplace opening will acquire an ashy-gray hue similar to the surface of the moon.”

I learned of the two aforementioned laws one afternoon while showing a house to my clients Bob and Denise Carlson and, more importantly, their eight-year-old son Mason.

Bob and I stood in the hallway of the house admiring the whole house fan built into the ceiling. I had never seen one so big and Bob had never seen one at all.

Mason raced around the house opening and closing doors and flipping wall switches on and off. Neither Bob nor Denise showed any concern or any interest in controlling the curious and energetic child.

Mason went outside and rang the doorbell at least 47 times, then slammed the front door, a big, heavy. oaken mass, with enough force to enact Law Number One. A vase wobbled and tumbled off a shelf on the wall beside the fireplace. But the carpet below was thick, plush, and the whitest of white, and cushioned the fall. The vase remained intact.

It was then that Mason found the wall switch for the whole house fan. I noticed that Mason had opened the glass doors to the fireplace and I was just about to close them when Law Number Two was enacted.

I forgot to mention in my description of Law Number Two that any objects within the 12-foot radius of the fireplace will also acquire a layer of ash with a hue similar to the surface of the moon.
