$110 million budget—has been working without an executive assistant.

That revelation from the city’s recent budget session underscores just how screwy City Hall is in the wake of the sweeping layoffs that took place in 2013 amid a crisis triggered by the Great Recession.

Orme asked for that position to be included in the city’s recent draft budget, which was approved along party lines (conservatives voting yea) on Tuesday (see Howard Hardee’s coverage on page 8). Other additional positions funded through the draft budget include a civil engineer, maintenance worker, an administrative analyst in community development and a code enforcement officer, but by far the Chico Police Department is getting the bulk of the new employees—two sergeants, four officers, a community services officer and a records technician.

Of course, the city could hire even more officers had the City Council not caved to the Chico Police Officers’Association during recent contract negotiations. The newest agreement with the union will cost taxpayers an additional $1.5 million over the life of the three-year contract.

Councilman Randall Stone said as much during Tuesday’s meeting, though he’s been shouting into the wind on that issue as of late. All of the so-called “fiscal conservatives”—Mayor Mark Sorensen, Vice Mayor Sean Morgan and Councilmembers Reanette Fillmer and Andrew Coolidge— and progressive Councilwoman Ann Schwab voted for the cops’ pay increases.

The truly conservative thing to do would have been to give the CPOA a modest cost-of-living adjustment to see the city through to fiscal stability.

Had that happened, there would be no haggling over hiring Orme an assistant, other departments could be shored up and, again, the police department could put more officers on the streets.

Coolidge said it’s not helpful to point fingers as the city works to regain solvency. That’s comical considering that’s exactly what he and the other recently elected council members did during the elections. Those who voted for raises for cops cannot back away from that decision. The consequences are patently clear already. Ω

Cheers to Oroville In last week’s issue, we featured the restoration of the Oroville Inn by local

real estate mogul Bud Tracy (see “Restoration Oroville,” cover story, by Meredith J. Cooper). He bought the building from the city of Oroville late last year for a relatively small price, with the promise of making major headway in a short amount of time. As we see, he’s making good on that promise and if all goes as planned there’ll be residents—students from the nearby Northwest Lineman College—in the rooms sometime next year.

We also wrote about the old Washington Block Building around the corner from the inn, which was recently bought by local business owners and fellow fixer-uppers Lori and Sean Pierce. That building, the oldest commercial structure still standing in Oroville, also could play a major role in revitalizing downtown.

We applaud their efforts—and those by others in the area—to make downtown, especially the beautiful historic core, a priority. It’s clearly working. New businesses are moving in, like the hip Miner’s Alley Brewing Co., infusing further life into what just 10 years ago was all antique and thrift stores. And kudos to Tracy for not only giving Bird Street a facelift but also bringing in residents (aka clientele for these downtown businesses).

We’re excited to see this transformation of downtown Oroville from shabby to chic. We hope the trend continues. For those who haven’t been to downtown Oroville lately, it’s worth a visit, both to see the transformation of all the beautiful old buildings as well as to support local businesses and the revitalization efforts in the area. Ω

Friends in need I feel like I’m connected in a small way to each of the people I’ve written about over the years, even after the ink dries and the paper yellows. I’m sure I’ll feel that way after this week’s issue is pulled from the racks.

That’s because I’m writing about two people I met through my work at CN&R who could really use the community’s help.

One of them is Mazi Noble, a contributing writer and talented former CN&R designer who now works at Chico State. Mazi recently wrote a guest commentary about what it’s like being a black man in America—and Chico in particular. He started a dialogue about local race relations—the kind of thing most people don’t like to talk about. I admire his candor on the subject.

But more than that, I admire the man. Working with him day in and day out, I got to know someone who was a dedicated father and loving husband.

Last month, at 36 years old, Mazi suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. That happened while he was on vacation in the Bay Area, not far from Stanford Medicine, where he underwent brain surgery. Mazi is now recuperating at home. He’s doing well, under the circumstances, but his recovery could take up to a year. That’s rough for someone who’s his family’s primary provider. A crowdfunding page (www.gofundme.com/mazinoble) has been set up to lessen the burden on this young, vibrant member of the community and his family.

The other person I hope Chico will rally around is Mandy Johnston. I met Mandy briefly out on the town many years ago. We had a lot of mutual friends. Fast-forward to 2012 and I contacted Mandy, then 31 and married just a few years earlier, under professional circumstances; I asked if I could write a story about her battle with cervical cancer.

I’d found out about it after stumbling across her amazingly well-written, informative and poignant blog on the subject (pappenstance.tumblr.com). I read every entry and I knew I had to talk to her again.

So, I set up an interview and we chatted while eating bagels on her lovely front porch. She was just as gracious and funny and sweet as one would assume from reading about her journey, from diagnosis through treatment, both chemo and radiation.

At the time, I was struggling with a medical issue, and just days after that interview underwent surgery to remove what ended up being a large and painful but benign uterine tumor. Mandy had just finished her last cancer treatment and, amazing person she is, contacted me offering support. My recovery took several weeks, and by the time I got back to work, my notes had gone cold. I never got around to writing about her—until now.

Mandy is the sort of person who helps strangers. I hope that kindness is returned to her in her time of need.

Re “Watchdogging patrons” (Second & Flume,

by Melissa Daugherty, June 11): Adding an investigative reporter to CN&R sounds great, but the paper has already informed its readers of major issues and the public has failed to take significant corrective action. So will readers take action on additional new issues?

CN&R covered the fact that Chico pays its police and firefighters more than most other well-to-do municipalities in the state, virtually three times the median income received by residents of Butte County. Yes, Chico has a new mayor and City Council members, but we still have a regime willing to support any project brought forward by police or fire at the expense of all other public service considerations. Now the sheriff is asking for more money because he is losing officers to the police in Chico and Oroville! Are citizens taking action to stop this inequity?

Second, CN&R covered the fracking issue and readers know that the Board of Supervisors approved issuing permits for this highly destructive industry that uses prodigious amounts of water, in the face of a severe drought! For those interested, the state water board has authority to cancel any permits issued if a complaint is made and it determines water, which is a public trust, is being misused, and it may use the courts to assist it if necessary (see www.water boards.ca.gov/waterrights/board_info/ water_rights_process.shtml#complaints).

It’s more than money Re “Deputies, please” (Newslines, by Howard Hardee, June 11): Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea complains of losing local deputies to higher-paying cities like Sacramento, the Bay Area and even Chico and Oroville. Although he also neglects to mention the big differences in the cost of living in some of those places, or the fact that even a Butte County dispatcher already makes over $120,000 a year, including benefits (three times the median household income for Butte County).

Yet most folks change jobs or even relocate often for many other reasons, including quality of life, cost of living, local leadership, schools, crime rate, etc., which begs this question: Is money really the only—or even primary—factor affecting retention these days in our local police departments (Butte County, Chico or otherwise)?

Two on Bidwell Park Re “Put up or shut up” (Editorial, June 11): The city’s alleging it can’t keep Bidwell Park open is likely a ploy to extort public acceptance of increased taxes and borrowing. The city alleges it can no longer afford to maintain 36 picnic areas, 25 restroom stalls, 10 porta-potties, three shower facilities, six specialevent areas, 10 miles of paved roads and bike paths, dirt trails and Sycamore Pool. Notwithstanding the absurdity of this allegation considering the salaries and benefits it pays, maintaining most of these facilities isn’t even strictly necessary.

Further, closing the gate to Middle Park creates a parking nuisance in adjacent neighborhoods and needlessly deprives residents access to Horseshoe Lake, the shooting range and Upper Park.

Accordingly, it should remain open.

The road to Upper Park, however, primarily facilitates students driving to Bear Hole to drink and party. This is not only hostile to wildlife and others enjoying Upper Park, it also facilitates injury and drownings. The road and porta-potties there are also costly to maintain. Accordingly, the gate to Upper Park should be closed permanently.

We are saddened that the city will open the gates of Lower Park seven days a week. We felt that Friday through Sunday was an excellent compromise for those desiring vehicular access while giving those of us who prefer the park without cars, Monday through Thursday, to enjoy our park too.

We visit the park nearly daily.

We have never had a problem finding a parking spot and gaining access. My wheelchair-bound mother often joins us. My kids know the names of each tree on the World of Trees path. They know where the redwood groves are and we hug them. They know that at Site 6 they can go down to the creek and splash because it’s shallow there. My twins are 3 years old and they have literally grown up in Bidwell Park.

Opening the park to vehicles daily also reopens it to a darker element of petty crime. I’ve had men expose themselves to me from their cars in Lower Park before; I’ve also witnessed people in sexual acts parked at picnic sites, and I’ve seen a lot of drug use there.

The safety, quiet and peace of the park are ruined for this Bidwell-loving family.

‘Patsies for Big Ag’ Re “Water scheme jeopardizes valley” (Guest comment, by Jim Brobeck, June 11): People don’t seem to realize that agriculture uses 80 percent of the water in California, so all these efforts by ordinary citizens to save a pail full of water here and there won’t amount to a drop in the bucket.

Citizens are being played for fools. Big Agribusiness farmers are millionaires and have tremendous political clout—and they should be the main focus of water conservation. Instead, they’re allowed to drill as many wells as they want to grow their expensive crops, so they drain the aquifer and cause ground subsidence. Gov. Jerry Brown needs their tax revenue to fund his bloated government, so he cuts their allotments but that’s about it.

The answer is to let the land lie fallow during the drought with drought-resistant groundcover to prevent another Dust Bowl. Big Agribusiness can grow their crops elsewhere, where it’s raining.

Overseas for instance. Why should ordinary citizens be the patsies for Big Agribusiness? We don’t work for them.

Advice: Seek reflection Re “Goading the guru” (Letters, by Patrick Newman, June 11): I attended the recent Bill McKibben event and feel compelled to respond to Patrick Newman’s onesided and, in my opinion, irresponsible letter. First, the question Newman asked was an important one—and if he would have asked it, sat down and allowed McKibben to answer, we all might have benefited from the exchange.

Instead, he disrespected him and everyone in the audience by continuing to shout, not allow an answer and take up valuable time so that others didn’t have an opportunity to ask questions. I believe McKibben when he said he would much rather be home in Vermont with his family doing what he loves best: writing books.

Instead, he’s out on the road repeating the same dire message— not to mention getting arrested, sleeping in different hotels and, yes, flying around the world in airplanes.

I respect him for doing what he does; doesn’t sound like fun to me.

So, Mr. Newman, instead of the self-righteous stance you took, per-

haps this can be an opportunity for you to reflect on the effects of your actions rather than claiming to be a victim and attempting to demean those who called you out. You do great community work. Maybe a bit of respect and humility is in order.

Correcting the record Re “A warming world” (Newslines, by Claire Hutkins Seda, June 11): Your story on environmental superstar Bill McKibben inaccurately describes my exchange with McKibben as a “lengthy admonishment” for his failure to promote plant-based diets.

I listened to McKibben’s presentation on “big solutions,” as he avoided any mention of the role of consumers in the environmental holocaust. I then objected to McKibben’s failure to address the question of “lifestyle.” When asked for an example, I mentioned animal food consumption—this being the No. 1 driver of climate catastrophe (and misery). This led to an exchange on the general subject of consumer responsibility— not just diet.

Long ago, mainstream environmentalism turned away from organizing and empowering the populace in collective, radical anticonsumerism. As we burn down the planet, environmental leaders continue to promote the notion that personal sacrifice is nothing but a quaint gesture. Tragically, without sacrifice, environmentalism is bereft of a moral core.

Consumerism on steroids, aka the American dream, is Earth’s worst nightmare. If I appeared “upset,” as I was booed out of the auditorium, it was not because McKibben failed to shill a “350.org” brand of veggie burgers.

It was this: Any environmentalist worshipped by his audience is saying less than what needs to be said.

Rubbish deal stinks Could you explain to your readers why Butte County decided to hand a virtual monopoly to three rubbish haulers? The county is being divided into three districts and each district is assigned to one hauler.

gy at a reasonable price. Now residents will have to arrange rubbish service from the assigned hauler on an individual basis without the advantage of competition to maintain reasonable rates.

From what I’ve read, the county will receive a franchise fee from each hauler and more tipping fees (garbage dumped) at the landfill.

The other theoretical advantage is less garbage truck traffic in each district. The additional fees most likely will be passed on to the customers in the form of higher rates. I don’t know why our county representatives believe that handing any business a monopoly is a good thing.

A health care scam Re “Obamacare at a premium” (The Pulse, June 11): My family’s premiums for Covered California would be $800 per month, with a $12,000 deductible. Only certain medical visits would count toward our deductible.

And then there’s the debacle of finding a competent doctor who accepts Covered California. I’ve seen ads in the Chico News & Review for doctors who boldly state they do not. Does Enloe accept Covered California?

The “Affordable Care Act” was a scam. Covered California is run by the former CEO of an insurance company, Peter Lee. Lee was unable to sell an earlier plan to businesses because it is a scam.

Locally, businesses have said they will pay the fine and give their employees small pay raises instead of participating in Covered California.

Three years ago, this paper advocated the “individual mandate,” by which anybody who was not living below the poverty level was forced to pay premiums, whether or not they could afford them, whether or not they would ever get anything for their money.

This inclusiveness is the real import of liberalism. Post-Reformation societies became generally more inclusive, with the notion of hereditary rank losing ground before a more liberally organized society.

The process was painful, frequently bloody, with a savagery enhanced by the certain knowledge of moral rightness, which all sides shared. Now the new feudalists are clamoring for a more insular society dominated by a theology based largely on the writings of Ayn Rand and Machiavelli, where people are subject to dominion by corporations that have no genuine relationship to the land or the lives they impact. While management gets bonuses for enhancing shareholder value, they are the feudal lords and we the new serfs. If we are not a liberal society, we will shortly be a feudal one, looking back on thin gruel in a cold hovel as the “good old days.”

My hardworking grandparents did not have the benefits of Medicare, and were essentially left without proper medical attention in their later years. My parents were just young enough to qualify for Social Security and eventually Medicare. When my father lay dying in a Sacramento hospital, my mother was grateful that her only expense on his behalf was the box of Kleenex she kept at his bedside. What a blessing was conferred on the aging population of America by Social Security and later the Medicare Act of 1965.

Frank Fields, the city of Chico’s administrative services director, lauded the City Council’s conservative approach to spending last fiscal year and urged for more of the same during the budget session on Tuesday (June 16).

NEW CHIEF AT CHICO STATE

Chico State has hired a new chief to head the university’s police department. John Feeney will leave his position as captain with the San Francisco Police Department and take over as the UPD’s chief on July 1.

Feeney replaces Robyn Hearne, who retired in April after serving on the force for 11 years.

Former Chico Police Chief Bruce Hagerty has served as acting chief since Hearne’s departure.

“I am confident that John will be an excellent leader in the University Police Department and a strong asset to campus,” Lori Hoffman, Chico State’s vice president for Business and Finance, said in a press release.

For his part, Feeney said, “I am honored to have been selected as Chico State’s next chief of police and look forward to serving the Chico State community.”

MEMORIAL SET FOR FORMER E-R EDITOR

A celebration of life for Bill Lee, former editor of the Chico Enterprise-Record, is scheduled for Saturday (June 20) at the CARD Community Center from 1 to 4 p.m. Lee, who died last October at the age of 96, retired from the E-R in 1983 after 37 years with the paper.

After serving in the Navy during World War II, Lee was hired in 1946 by The Chico Enterprise, whose competition at the time was The Chico Record. Eventually the papers merged and Lee became editor.

According to his obituary, as an editor Lee worked to keep the paper fair and accurate and often repeated the quote by muckraking journalist Finley Peter Dunne: “It’s the job of a newspaper to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.”

SYMPHONY CONDUCTOR HIRED

A new conductor has been hired to lead the North State Symphony following a nearly twoyear search that evaluated 40 applicants.

Chico State announced June 17 that Scott Seaton (pictured) has been handed the conductor’s baton.

Seaton, who has led orchestras in Europe, South America, New York, Cleveland, Boston and most recently North Dakota, said he was “thrilled to be joining the North State Symphony and to be leading this outstanding organization into a grand new chapter.”

“From our first rehearsal in February, I felt a fantastic chemistry with the musicians that only became more intense as we performed the concert set in Chico and Redding,” he said in a statement. “Their passion and desire for excellence is inspiring.

This is a true regional orchestra in every sense and I’m very excited to begin working with the orchestra and staff and look forward to joining this wonderful community.”

The symphony’s original conductor, Kyle Wiley Pickett, stepped down at the end of the 2013-14 season.

Fiscal reproach City Council approves $109.7 million budget, but not without raising hackles here’s little doubt that Mark Orme is one of Taccounts, Chico’s busiest public servants. By most the city manager scrambles from meet-

ing to meeting as he leads the effort to right Chico’s financial ship—and also address issues like public safety, story and photo by park staffing and maintaining Howard Hardee the urban forest.

But, as it emerged during the howardh@ Chico City Council’s annual newsreview.com budget session on Tuesday (June 16), Orme has been going it alone, handling secretarial duties such as answering phones, scheduling his own meetings and greeting members of the public as they drop by his office.

“I have never, in my whole career—and I believe I’ve worked in some creative organizations—seen the CEO of an organization scheduling and answering phones,” said City Clerk Debbie Presson. “I won’t speak to whether [Orme] can be effective in that manner, but I would say I’d gladly give up my position to make sure he gets the assistance he needs.”

By “my position,” Presson didn’t mean her own job, but rather the administrative assistant her office applied for in the city’s 2015-16 budget. Grappling with increasing workloads and short staffs has been the reality for Orme, Presson and most heads of departments since the cuts enacted by former City Manager Brian Nakamura slashed the city to the bone in the summer of 2013.

Councilman Randall Stone adamantly argued that city staff’s current struggles are tied to recent contract negotiations, making an obvious refer-

ence to the memorandum of understanding the city signed with the Chico Police Officers’Association in April. It provided pay raises to current officers that will cost the city a total of $1.5 million over three years. (The contract was approved by the council in a 5-1 vote, with Stone dissenting and Councilwoman Tami Ritter absent.) Stone lamented that, while the city saved $4 million in employee salary concessions and layoffs, “we brought back $1.5 million to a single department.”

“When we make contract decisions like that, it impacts the rest of the city. … That’s why we don’t have tree crews, why the CEO of the organization is answering his own phone calls,” he said.

“It’s inexcusable.”

Overall, the city’s fiscal outlook has improved significantly since “the darkest time for the city of Chico,” as Nakamura characterized his cuts in 2013. The city’s general fund deficit, once greater than $15 million, has been trimmed to $4.5 million. And there are indications that the local economy has turned a corner—building permit requests have greatly increased, Orme said, and sales tax revenues have resumed growth.

Administrative Services Director Frank Fields emphasized a methodical and cautious approach to fiscal recovery, praising the council’s conservative spending in 2014-15, during which the city had budgeted to direct $800,000

toward the deficit but ultimately paid down $3 million of debt.

And while Fields noted that the city’s general fund reserve is still zero, he remained optimistic.

“In the worst-case scenario, come 2019-20 we actually have a reserve,” he predicted. “More practically speaking, I think in two years we have a reserve.”

Here’s how the city of Chico’s

$109.7 million budget for 2015-16 breaks down: A total of $87 million is appropriated for operating funds—the cost of personnel salaries and benefits, materials and supplies, and outside services purchased.

The city will add 12.75 new positions, some part-time—four police officers and two police sergeants, along with a police records technician, a code enforcement officer, a community services officer, an administrative assistant in the city clerk’s office, an executive assistant in the city manager’s office, an administrative analyst in community development, an associate civil engineer, and a maintenance worker. Additionally, one parttime park ranger will become full time.

Meanwhile, a total of $22.7 million is set aside for capital improvement projects such as the widening of Highway 32, nitrate pollution mitigation, a dispatch system for police, a ladder truck for the fire department, preliminarily engineering and design for the eventual recon-

struction of Sycamore Pool, and rehabilitation of Upper Park Road.

The council approved the budget on a 4-3 vote, with Councilmembers Ann Schwab, Ritter and Stone dissenting. All three expressed concerns with adding new positions (Schwab’s motion to approve the budget without adding the administrative assistant position to the city clerk’s office failed to garner a second), while Ritter protested moving forward on capital projects without full information on the long-term needs of the city.

“Maybe we can do some long-range planning for what you anticipate in the next year, the next three years, the next five years, so we know what we’re funding now,” Ritter said. “It’s hard to prioritize when we don’t even know what projects are out there.”

Orme said he’s seen other cities that compile lists of anticipated capital projects 10 and 20 years into the future, but expressed concern about devoting staff time to such a task when most departments are grappling with immediate projects. However, he agreed to come before the council with a list of upcoming capital improvement projects at a future meeting.

The budget also earmarked a total of

$109,205 for community block grants, down from about $117,000 last year, though it was the council’s discretion to tweak exactly how the funding was divvied up. This year, nine organizations—each of which had to apply for a minimum of $15,000—were considered for funding. Six would be awarded $15,000 and one would be awarded $19,205.

When it became apparent that the Work Training Center of Butte County and Do It Leisure would be the odd organizations out, Vice Mayor Sean Morgan proposed making an exception to the $15,000 minimum by diverting $5,000 from the Community Action Agency and $5,000 from Legal Services of Northern California and directing that money to WTC and Do It Leisure.

Housing Manager Marie Demers recommended against Morgan’s proposal because “we excluded an organization for not requesting $15,000,” she said.

Morgan’s proposal met with further resistance from Schwab and Ritter, who suggested diverting funding to emergency service providers, such as Catalyst Domestic Violence. Councilman Andrew Coolidge then argued that the “whole process is flawed,” and suggested an across-the-board decrease of funding to all organizations to proportionally reflect the city’s financial situation.

Morgan himself seemed resigned that his proposal would fail. “Call the question so we can vote this down,” he said. Nevertheless, it passed 4-3, with Coolidge, Ritter and Schwab dissenting. Ω

Lakeside Pavilion was that he spent much of his youth in a home for Jewish children in San Francisco.

Davis, who was Chico’s city manager for 33 years, from 1959-92, died April 23 at the age of 90. Needless to say, he had a profound impact on the city he loved. As Assemblyman James Gallagher put it, “Nobody contributed more to Chico than Fred Davis.”

The Lakeside Pavilion was filled to capacity with friends, dignitaries and former city employees who worked under Davis, including much of the current administration at City Hall and several council members.

The event was emceed by former Assemblyman Stan Statham, who noted that when he first decided to make the jump from being a news anchor at KHSL-TV to politics, he went to see Davis. Following their meeting, Davis became the first person to contribute to Statham’s campaign, writing him a check for $100.

The job of telling Davis’ life story fell to George Walker, Davis’ longtime friend after whom the Salvation Army’s George Walker Rehabilitation Center in Chico is named. He described how, when Davis’ parents came to this country from Poland in the 1930s, a processing official at Ellis Island couldn’t pronounce their name and changed it to Davis.

Davis’ father had served in World War I and been injured by mustard gas. He worked in San Francisco as a tailor, but because of his disability couldn’t earn enough to support his family, which is why Davis was put in the home for children.

The young man did well at Balboa High School and afterward joined the Army Air Corps, where he was trained as a pilot-

navigator. During World War II he flew bombing missions over Europe, rising to the rank of major.

Following the war, he studied civil engineering at UC Berkeley, and in 1949 he married Elaine Kramer. They moved to Chico in 1953, when he was hired as the city’s public works director, a post he held for six years, until being promoted to city manager. They had two daughters, Debbie and Leslie. Elaine died in 1969. Davis married Joyce Iverson three years later; she died in 2001.

Much was made of the family’s cabin at Lake Almanor, and it was well-known that Davis loved to get away to the lake whenever he could. Several speakers talked of Davis’ love of family, and especially his daughters.

But it was Davis’ work as city manager that

most people remembered. He was an institution, an icon, and he knew it. Walker described him as a “benevolent dictator,” and Statham spoke of his ability to manipulate the council.

City managers get their way with councils by controlling the flow of information.

Davis’ favorite words directed to the council, Statham said, were, “‘As you know.’ If they

say they don’t know, they look stupid.”

On the other hand, Davis was a good, if punctilious, boss. Sharon Nichols, who worked for the city in several capacities from 1973-88, said he “instilled a love of the city and city properties” in everyone at City Hall.

And he was a good listener, Nichols said: “We all felt like we had a complete open door to his office.”

He was a perfectionist and demanded the same of others, she added. For example, he forbade the use of paper clips, saying they had a way of causing the pieces of paper next to them to get clipped accidentally and thus lost. Use staples, he insisted.

He also expected employees to put in a full day of work. Once, Nichols said, when Davis was on a trip to London, he called the office at 4:55 p.m. Chico time “to make sure everybody was still there.”

Davis was most proud of creating The Esplanade as the beautiful boulevard it is today, Walker said. At the time it was part of Highway 99, and had to be designed to accommodate heavy traffic even as it maintained the beauty of the streetscape. (See “Model roadway,” CN&R May 3, 2007, for details.)

He remained busy after retirement. He had a consultancy firm for many years, served as a rent-a-manager in several jurisdictions, and wrote a blog called “Debunking the bunk” that contained all the bluntness people had come to expect from him.

Jim Stevens, principal of Northstar Engineering, told a terrific story. A billionaire industrialist from Holland was in town, and Stevens invited a dozen or so people, including Davis, to meet him. When they went around the room introducing themselves, the Dutch man mentioned the village he’d grown up in.

Davis was next. “I believe I bombed it,” he said.

freedom of movement is curtailed or limited by a peace officer, or when a person is led to believe, as a reasonable person, that he or she is so deprived of the freedom to move, such as during a stop, a stop and frisk, an interrogation, an arrest, transport prior to booking, or correctional confinement.”

If passed, it would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2018, and “would require each state and local agency that employs a peace officer to annually report to the Attorney General data on the use of force by that agency’s sworn personnel.”

Referencing the viral video litany that includes such names as Eric Garner, Walter Scott and Freddie Gray, racial justice advocate Chauncee Smith indicated that lawmakers have before them a grim opportunity.

“While it is quite difficult to discern betterment in such tragedy, if it exists, it may be that it has delivered a proverbial gut check to our society,” Smith, who works for the American Civil Liberties Union of California, told an Assembly committee on May 27.

Yet the guts of lawmakers may not be quite as big as their eyes.

The tepid response to Weber’s AB 619 is due, in part, to its $3.3 million price tag.

Finding more support was Assembly Bill 1289, authored by a

former cop, Assemblyman Jim Cooper of Elk Grove. Unanimously approved by the state Assembly on May 25, the proposal now moves to the Senate. If passed, the bill would require a study on local community policing and engagement strategies. The bill shifts that authority from the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office to the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, which sets the minimum standards for becoming a cop.

Taryn Kinney, a spokeswoman for Assemblyman Cooper, said it was the LAO that recommended the shift, since POST’s contacts with local law enforcement agencies would make the data-collection process easier.

Lastly, there’s Assembly Bill 953, also by Weber. It would expand California’s prohibition against racial profiling to include all forms of identity bias, and create an advisory board under the state Attorney General’s Office to oversee such efforts in 2016.

AB 953 advanced through the Assembly’s Appropriations Committee. “We’ll see if our Assembly actually has the courage to do what the people are asking for,” Weber said during a recent committee meeting.

two centuries ago have been mostly swallowed up by the development of growing populations. Though there’s no question regarding where the trees went, environmentalists are mystified as to why they’re not growing back.

“Oak woodlands are not regenerating and nobody’s sure why,” said Becky Holden, program coordinator for a volunteer oak planting program started last fall by Butte Environmental Council. “Around here we have lots of old oaks, but few new seedlings, and as the old oaks die there’s a legitimate fear there might not be new ones to replace them.”

Some theories about the dearth of young oaks suggest increased distances between woodlands make it impossible for pollinators to reach areas of new growth, or that invasive grass species are the primary culprits. Then there’s the issue of “sudden oak death,” a fatal plant pathogen targeting the trees first detected in 1995, further fueling the need for restoration and conservation. Only one-third of California’s oak woodlands remain, and some populations, such as the blue oak, are dying off at up to 15 percent annually, according to UC Berkeley’s Hastings Natural

The BEC program, which started last year with a $35,000 grant from the California Wildlife Foundation, is a five-year plan to bolster blue and valley oak populations in Upper Bidwell Park. The first stages of the project involved collecting blue oak acorns from the park, which was done to ensure the trees’ genetic stock and—BEC hopes—increase the future trees’ survival rate.

One hundred samples of that species were planted at several locations within the park early this spring, and similar efforts for valley oaks will begin later this year. The trees are planted with tree tubes to protect them from deer and other foragers, which are replaced by cages as the seedlings sprout.

About 85 of the 100 acorns originally planted have shown promising growth, Holden said.

Throughout this summer, efforts

will be focused on keeping the trees watered and alive through severe drought conditions, a job for which BEC is actively seeking volunteers.

As Holden explained, the program was designed to be a volunteer-oriented, citizen science project. More than 100 fourth- to eighth-grade students helped collect and plant some of the acorns through BEC’s partnership with Kids & Creeks, and the organization also joined with Butte County Juvenile Hall and the Bidwell Golf Course to plant more.

opportunity to engage our community,” said BEC Executive Director Robyn DiFalco via press release.

“We placed signs near the planting area that educate the public about our native oak woodland ecosystem [and] why we should care about the oaks. We hope that runners, dog walkers and anyone who uses the park will see the oaks and want to help.”

BEC launched the watering phase of the program last Sunday (June 14), and will continue to gather volunteers for watering sessions every Sunday morning through August. Volunteers are asked to report to the North Rim Trail parking lot at 8:15 a.m., wearing sturdy shoes. The program requires participants to be able to carry at least 1 gallon of water. The sites are vehicle-accessible, located just 5 to 10 yards from existing roads, Holden said. A BEC official will lead each session and provide necessary resources including water, buckets and hoses.

Volunteers are encouraged to just show up, or contact BEC to sign up as a group, which Holden said she hopes to see happen.

“We’re hoping people will look at it kind of like an Adopt-a-Highway program, so if someone wants to get a bunch of friends together to water trees for a day, that’s great.”

RARE ILLNESS RE-EMERGES

Spanish health officials recently confirmed the country’s first documented case of diphtheria since 1986. According to Time magazine, the parents of the 6-year-old boy who contracted the infection had opted out of vaccinating him.

He is in intensive care.

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that typically afflicts those under 5 years old and over 60, causing inflammation of nerves, complications due to low blood platelets, abnormal heart rate and possibly paralysis. Spain suffered several epidemics of diphtheria in the 16th and 17th centuries, but the condition is now rare, as is the antitoxin. (The Russian ambassador to Spain reportedly flew the antitoxin from Moscow to Barcelona.) One out of every 10 patients dies from early complications of diphtheria.

Health officials in Catalonia, where the boy is from, conducted cheek swabs on 57 other children. They found the infection in eight of them, but they were vaccinated and show no symptoms.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ILLUSTRATED

An interactive online map created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency illustrates that people in some communities in California face the country’s greatest health risks from pollution.

The EPA analyzed more than 217,000 census block groups, mostly small communities with an average of 1,400 residents, and combined environmental and demographic data to identify areas where low-income and minority populations are most exposed to air pollution, traffic congestion, lead paint, hazardous waste and other health risks, according to the Los Angeles Times. The map, titled EJSCREEN, shows that communities in southeast Los Angeles County, the Inland Empire and the San Joaquin Valley are among the most at-risk in the nation.

Environmental justice groups say they will use the map (ejscreen.epa.gov/mapper) to advocate for emissions-cutting projects and the enforcement of environmental regulations.

HEARTBURN OR HEART ATTACK?

There may be a link between using proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs—medication for heartburn such as Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid—and risk of heart attack, according to Stanford University.

For the study, researchers combed the electronic health records of about 3 million people and “created a data structure which we [could] then analyze for associations that may have clinical significance,” said one of the study’s authors, according to KQED News. Use of heartburn medication was associated with a 16 percent to 20 percent increased risk of heart attack “above baseline”—which means that if an individual’s risk is low, say 1 in 10,000, then using PPIs would increase risk to 1.2 in 10,000. The concern is for people already at high risk of heart attack.

However, the researchers stressed that only a randomized control trial in which participants receive either a PPI or a placebo would prove causation.

That’s been a challenge the past three years at Enloe Medical Center, where the emergency department itself has been in flux.

Enloe’s Century Project reshaped the main hospital, most conspicuously with the construction of the five-story Magnolia Tower. That structure was first occupied in November 2012; renovations in the older facility continued through this spring. Throughout, the emergency department made a sequence of hopscotch jumps, as certain ER services and patient rooms were temporarily relocated across the complex while the number of patients steadily increased.

The new emergency medical building opened last August, but even then it wasn’t complete. Phase I added 25 patient beds, a large trauma room and ER-dedicated X-ray and CT equipment; only last Tuesday (June 9) was Phase II finished and the space wholly open.

The sleek and shiny emergency department now commands almost 25,000 square feet—7,000 more than the first phase and 15,000 more overall—and totals 39 beds, plus surge capacity for more. The single-floor building features a hallway design optimized for smooth flow along with privacy. It also has an eyecatching (and water-efficient) fountain

and a baby grand piano in the lobby.

Dr. Monty Leavitt, a 20-year member of the department who now serves as its medical director, is pleased to call the “big and beautiful” place his professional home.

“We’ve been displaced from place to place, just annexing other areas in the hospital to keep functioning,” Leavitt said.

“We like this a lot.”

So does Judy Cline, director of emergency and trauma services. She’s a nurse, which makes her particularly attuned to how patients experience the ER. “We hope that we’ll be more efficient being back in one space,” she said. “Our goals are always to get to our patients as quickly as we possibly can; I know for some it seems like a very long wait, because you never know how many more sick individuals come in ahead of you, and you can’t see the ambulances come in and the helicopters landing … but we hope with more beds, and with that efficiency of not having to run down to an entire other side of the hospital to find a bed for you, that our wait times will actually get much better.”

Enloe’s emergency services, efficiency is important. The ER saw around 40,000 patients in 2013. Last year, that total increased to 48,000. This year, the department is on pace for 60,000.

Leavitt said this upward spike has come while the percentage of hospital admissions decreased the past year, suggesting that the emergency department and its “unique facility” has a wider draw.

Enloe CEO Mike Wiltermood, meanwhile, attributed the increase in ER patients to expanded insurance through the Affordable Care Act and the shortage of local primary care physicians.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of insurance you have,” he said. “I’m talking to people moving into Northern California who can’t find a physician; everybody’s booked.”

The larger space would be hollow, though, without adequate staffing.

Leavitt credits Dr. Stephen Shipley with creating a “pipeline” of ER doctors into Chico amid the physician shortage, especially for rural areas. Shipley came from San Diego, and after reaching out to colleagues, he lured nine others northward.

Including around 75 nurses and other support staff, the emergency department is staffed by 150 employees. Cline says around twothirds of the nurses were trained at Butte College or Chico State.

Technicians also tend to come from local training programs.

“We’re very, very lucky to have the schools we have here locally to keep talented help,” she said.

Completion of the emergency

department marks completion of all building construction for the Century Project. It’s not, however, the end of work. The $175 million expansion, which began in 2006, includes a community park that’s in its earliest stages.

The park will comprise just over 2 acres, west of the medical center (bounded by Magnolia, Arcadian, West Fifth and West Sixth avenues), serving as a buffer between hospital buildings and neighboring residences.

“It is intended as both a resource for the neighborhood—a place people can wander around and for quiet enjoyment—and a place for our patients and our staff members to go outside and enjoy nature,” said Bill Seguine, Enloe’s

facilities director. “It does not have ball fields, big grass areas, places to play Frisbee and let the dogs run around…. It’s a place where we can have some quiet outdoor space that doesn’t otherwise attract traffic here to the area.”

The park already has “a small play structure for small children,” thanks to a local Rotary club’s donation. Plans include benches, paths and ornamental plants.

“Because of our water situation, it does present both unique and interesting challenges, along with opportunities,” Seguine said.

“With the drought and our water needs, we don’t want to be putting in high-water-use plants or other things—but, fortunately, we’d already been planning on that.”

The property reserved for the park mostly has been cleared for repurposing. The last structure to remove is where Seguine happens to work.

“The very last thing I do for the Century Project is destroy my own office,” he said, chuckling.

“Somewhere, I need to build myself a new home.”

Until then, he’ll enjoy his view of the work already done.

About the emergency department in particular, but applicable to the whole project, Seguine said: “I’m extremely pleased with how it all turned out. It’s a huge effort from a lot of people … we succeeded as a team.” □

For Ungerman, being stranded in France and fighting to return to the United States made him re-examine his American dream and what it means to live in this country.

“The people who come to this country, some of them come here to exploit everything. But others come to build it up. When you see people who push others to the point of weakness—I think that’s shortsighted; it’s creating a weak nation,” Ungerman said. “We believe in empowering people rather than cutting them down.” □

“When you start looking for the positive, that’s what you find,” Wear said.

But everything hasn’t always been rosy for the couple. Ungerman, a French citizen, had been living in the United States for 20 years when, unexpectedly in 2009, he was denied his U.S. visa. After 15 months of fighting—him from France, Wear from the U.S.—he ultimately was allowed to return. But the turmoil had been tough on the couple.

“It brought home the plight of people who are shown no respect for the reality of their lives by the system,” Ungerman said.

“There was no humanity,” Wear added.

“We had to make a conscious effort to cultivate joy and hope. We were no longer interested in exposing horror stories.”

That was the foundation for Respectful Revolution, which builds on Ungerman’s background in film—he has a long history of exposing wrongdoing related to the environment—and Wear’s skills in communication. For the past three summers, Ungerman has set out on the road on his trusty motorcycle to record stories of people around the United States who are acting respectfully.

Themes range from charitable efforts to ethical businesses to sustainability.

The short videos are posted online at respectfulrevolution.org and the couple also have traveled around the country offering screenings in regions where they filmed the previous summer. In each “story,” they ask their subject three questions: What do you do? Why do you do it? And, who are you?

“Our last question is always ‘Who are you?’” Ungerman explained. “Because, now that I know what you do, and I know 16

your motivation for doing it, I want to be your friend—I want to know who you are.

It helps people realize that it doesn’t take a superhero to do something cool.”

One of the people they interviewed, while in Denver two summers ago, was Jon Stout, general manager of Free Speech TV. The network, which airs nationally as well as online, offers independent, progressive news meant to inspire social change.

“He could have gone to work for any network,” Wear said of why they chose to feature Stout. “But he made the risky choice to tell the news stories that weren’t being told.”

When Ungerman and Wear returned to Denver last year to screen that video and others, Stout approached the pair and offered them a deal. They ended up signing with Free Speech TV for a 12-episode run of Respectful Revolution. “We want it to be part solution-based ideas and part adventure travelogue.”

To help move their project along, they’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to keep them afloat while they work away—the network is a nonprofit and only offered $200 per episode—as well as to allow them to hire someone to boost their Web presence and make their content compatible with tablets and cellphones.

“The show’s going to happen whether Kickstarter does or not,” Wear said. “It’s just the difference between doing the job we want to do and making the job that much harder.”

In the end, it all comes back to their message of positivity. In finding the people they’ve featured in their videos thus far, Wear said they often approach people and ask them if they know anyone who’s doing something positive in their community.

“At first they might not have an answer,” she said. “Then, give them 10 minutes and

Chris Singleton wears all the hats at Radio 101.7, the alternative station KVXX out of Hamilton City. He’s truly a one-man show who serves as engineer, program director and promotions director. He produces and schedules everything you hear on the air, except for ads. Singleton, 33, is originally from southern Florida, where he grew up knowing he wanted a career in radio. As soon as he started studying broadcasting at the University of Florida, he landed a job at a Top 40 station.

But as a new hire, he was among the first laid off during the Great Recession, so he moved to the Bay Area to crash on a buddy’s couch.

Singleton then worked at a station in San Jose, and moved to Chico for the job with Radio 101.7, which went on air in September 2013.

I’ve written in this space about my serious love of wine, and in fact there were a few years when that’s pretty much all I drank, alcohol-wise. Beer was my first love, however, and when we got back together a couple of summers ago, it was a sweet reunion.

I was living in Colorado at the time and I was totally spoiled. There were literally enough breweries there, just in Boulder County, to visit a different one every week for half a year. Back in Chico and the land of Sierra Nevada, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the number of craft beers on tap around town and, more impressive, all the festivals dedicated to all things brewed.

A few weeks ago, I went to my first Microbrew Fest, put on by Soroptomist International of Bidwell Rancho. It was the 20th installment of the popular event, and upon first walking in and receiving my complimentary pint glass, I could see why.

Booths filled the main room at the Elks Lodge, with servers offering everything from beer to cider to some delicious-smelling food. Out on the lawn, with live music in one corner, were dozens more beer options from all over the country, and it was difficult to decide where to start.

All in all, there were many fantastic beers on tap that afternoon.

I even got a taste of Colorado in Oskar Blues Brewery’s Mama’s Little Yella Pils. (I was a bit disappointed, however, when I enthusiastically told the woman pouring that I used to live in Longmont, where Oskar Blues is brewed, and she said, “Oh, cool, we’re based in Fort Collins.” She must’ve thought she was pouring New Belgium. Oh well.)

The true highlights of the day were three things I didn’t expect to like, and two of them weren’t even beers. The first was the blackberry wine from Chico’s Honey Run Winery. I know I’ve tasted some of their wines before but didn’t remember any standing out for me back then. Taste buds do change, though, and this time around, it was absolutely delicious, fruity without being overly sweet. The pourer knew her stuff, too, and recommended serving any of their wines over ice cream or even cooking with them (yum!).

The second highlight was a stout. I’ve never been a fan of super dark beers so I tend to steer clear of stouts. But my boyfriend insisted I try the Campfire Stout from High Water Brewing. I was so glad I did. It tasted like a campfire in my mouth—chocolatey, smokey, creamy. Mmm. The final surprise was Chico-based Five by Five Bitters (which I plan to expound upon in the coming weeks), which created the most delicious combination of soda water and barrel-aged vanilla bitters. Perfectly refreshing on a long, hot day.

What’s your job like, day-to-day?

It’s not so bad. Once a station is set up, it just runs. But when there’s a problem, something wrong with the transmitter or something, then it becomes a long day. Just recently, on Friday afternoon, we went off the air. I had to drive up to the transmitter tower in Cohasset and see what was wrong, and it turned out there were a bunch of kids drinking on top of the tower. They had kicked a wire or something and knocked us off the air. I was expecting to have to recycle a piece of equipment, but I had to call the police. It turned into a long day.

How did you get interested in radio as a kid?

You drive around with your parents and listen to radio in the car, and that’s how you find your music identity when you’re young. My mom, though, listened to talk radio, and there were so many entertaining folks. In south Florida there was a show called “Rick and Suds.” We were driving through town, and the guy makes a fart joke on the air while we just happened to be driving by his home, and it was this mansion. I’m like, “This guy lives in a mansion, and he makes fart jokes all day long? That’s something I could do for the rest of my life.”

Do people recognize your voice?

No. I’m sure some DJs around town get some of that, but I’m also not one to put myself out there. I don’t

run around and say, “I’m the guy from Radio 101.7.” That’s just not me. And plus, I don’t talk the same when I’m on the radio. When you’re on the air, it’s almost like subconscious the way you start enunciating more, paying attention to your tones and inflections.

What kind of music do you like to play?

I’m a metal guy, and I’ve listened to a lot of grunge. Obviously, we don’t do metal, but since I’ve been programming 101.7, I’ve come to really enjoy the music we play. I think it’s really good. When I was a kid, the music put out on the radio, my parents thought it was crap. The music being put out now is legitimately good. Anyone from any generation can listen and enjoy it.

I

n mid-April, I found myself sitting in the nearly empty barroom of the Tackle Box Bar & Grill in south Chico, half awake and filling my rumbling stomach with hot scrambled eggs and hash browns, my eyelids pried open by an endless supply of coffee that came courtesy of an industrial-size, wall-mounted robot-like coffee machine. Six o’clock and a cold beer weren’t far off my radar as I listened to the sweet sounds of a classical guitarist strumming through what he introduced as “French parlor music from the 17th century.” There is no chance I’ll ever remember the name of the composer.

I could be found at the Tackle Box most mornings that month and also the first few days of May, making the drive down from my farm in Los Molinos in support of a

strange quest to hold the world’s longest multi-artist concert as certified by Guinness World Records, a month-long marathon attempt dubbed Chico Breaks the Record.

The music began on the evening of April 1, and didn’t stop until the afternoon of May 5—35 straight days. During that time, hundreds of local, regional and national touring acts stepped onto the Tackle Box stage to perform almost every conceivable style of music, and event volunteers, organizers, musicians and the bar’s staff dealt with absentee acts, scheduling snafus, occasional fisticuffs, and two separate power outages. On its surface, the event was about breaking a record few people ever imagined existed, but for me and many others involved, it became something more.

Every person in the south Chico barroom and restaurant became united toward a common goal. It’s been more than a month since the clock stopped, and I’m still struggling to make sense of it all.

If you had told me before April that I

would’ve been involved in this attempt, I probably would have looked at you like you were insane. Getting into the Guinness Book of World Records was something my friends and I dreamed about when we were in elementary school. Like childhood dreams of winning an Olympic gold medal or being a motorcycle daredevil à la Evel Bob Howard, author of this story, on stage.

Local writer finds 35-day concert isn’t about a record, it’s about the attempt Knievel, that dream had flickered out and been forgotten. An outdated copy of the record book at a thrift store might warrant a few flips of the page and some nostalgic giggles, but that was about it.

However, I found myself engaged in an uncharacteristic effort to help see this thing through, piloting my pick-up down Highway 99 at times I used to consider the middle of the night. I ended up logging dozens of hours, mostly in the early mornings, performing when asked to, but otherwise simply watching and listening to a portion of the array of artists who graced the Tackle Box stage. I generally would arrive at the bar around 5:30 a.m. and remain until around 10 a.m., when the late-morning/early-lunch crowd started rolling in.

I likely wouldn’t have gotten involved at all if my wife, Trish, hadn’t booked the debut performance of a new band we’d started, the Ever After Party, at the Tackle Box on April 3. At practice, Trish explained the rules and I shrugged my shoulders.

Guinness sets forth a number of technical rules to make the record official: Bands must be set up and playing within five minutes of the prior act; once a band or musician starts, there can be a gap of no more than 30 seconds in between songs; songs must be at least two minutes long; and every song must have a discernible melody somewhere within it. The event had to be ticketed, so customers coming into the Tackle Box were asked to pay a dollar, then given a coupon for a dollar off of food or drink purchases.

The rules also state that there must be at least 10 people present in the audience at all times. This may seem like no big deal at 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon, but it became an entirely different story at 5:30 a.m. on a Tuesday.

The day of the show, as Ever After Party hacked our way through a passable set of songs we’d stretched out to fill up the slotted hour, I realized the scene inside the Tackle Box was unlike any other I’ve ever been involved in. The audience was a complete mishmash of music lovers—some of our friends, people from the community who were there to support the record-breaking attempt, regular Tackle Box patrons.

These were people who otherwise might never have set foot in the same room, but there they were, together and supporting a single cause. The crowd was as appreciative an audience as you could ever hope to play for, and when we were done, the next band took to the stage and the music continued.

After that, I was hooked. I “caught

the fever,” and I wasn’t the only one. As I interviewed people who were involved in the effort, many confessed they’d been similarly afflicted. To better understand how it started, I spoke with Julian Ruck, the man who dreamed the whole thing up.

Contrary to what his laid-back demeanor

and boyish grin might suggest, Ruck is a man on a mission: He’s hellbent on pushing the Chico music scene into the national spotlight and dragging the rest of us along with him, kicking and screaming if he has to. Chico Breaks the Record was his first objective in a constantly evolving master plan.

I spoke with Ruck regularly during the attempt—it seemed like he always was at the Tackle Box. After the event ended, he and partner/co-organizer Emily Rose agreed to sit down and reflect on the effort over some homemade The CAMMIES Blues Showcase took place at the Tackle Box during Chico Breaks wine. the Record, so nominees played by Guinness rules requiring short breaks between bands and songs.

Ruck explained that, in other PHOTO BY JASON CASSIDY cities where the record was set, it was done by a handful of musicians—singer-guitarists or hired bands—who all knew the rules and could play for long stretches at a time. But Ruck decided to take an entirely different path by opening participation to any and all comers.

“It came from a want to brand Chico as the live music town we all know it is,” Ruck explained, “but to people outside of Chico.”

music scenes are cliques. Because of our size, we’re forced to integrate genres and personality types. That makes us fertile for a big community project like this.”

Ruck realizes his populist approach helped bolster the effort, while sticking with a few handpicked players may have had the opposite effect: “The entire town would hate me!” he said with a smile.

Though he’s admittedly ambitious, Ruck set aside his own ego and rolled with the figurative punches—and one-time literal fisticuffs when a performer lost his patience over playing by Guinness’ rules—during the event. I’ve seen my share of vampires and narcissists during my decades of involvement in an industry rife with personality disorders, and when questioning motivations I’ve always found it helpful to hang on to a healthy amount of cynicism. It became apparent to me early on that Ruck and Rose put this thing together for the right reasons: It was a genuine, community-based effort intended to create something that was much larger than the sum of its parts.

As per Guinness’ requirements, everything was documented, down to the number of people in the audience at 3:30 a.m. on any given morning. Every second of musical performance was captured with video and audio recordings, and logs were kept of each performer, along with the title and duration of every song played.

It’s a monumental amount of evidence, and Ruck and Rose made a cross-country trip to deliver more than 10 terabytes of digital recordings and reams of paperwork to Guinness’ New York City headquarters. They called it their “Evidence Across America” excursion. Guinness officials said it will take at least 12 weeks to review the evidence and confirm the record has been broken.

audience members waned dramatically in the early morning hours and there were massive holes in the performance calendar. Each day appeared as though it could be the last.

Guinness rules required that two official witnesses be on duty at all times. Emma Jessee served as one of the primary witness coordinators: “I had a feeling that once it got rolling it would be fine,” Jessee said. “What I was worried about was getting it started from the beginning … that is a huge endeavor.”

As the first weekend rolled around, things started going smoother. Volunteers filling the crucial roles, such as running the shot clock, working the door and coordinating witnesses, were getting up to speed. Word of the effort spread and bands began to sign up in earnest.

“Before this started, I didn’t feel like I had any time to do anything,” said Bitz Haley, a trainer/coordinator/volunteer extraordinaire and sometime performer who seemingly was omnipresent at the Tackle Box during the attempt. “But after it started, that’s all I could do. I couldn’t leave. When I wasn’t there, I wanted to be there. The momentum, it started slowly, and then it picked up, and it picked up, and I got swept into it.”

But, just as things were starting to run smoothly, potential

disaster struck.

At around 8 a.m on April 6, a Monday, Butte County was darkened by a massive power outage that spanned Redding to Sacramento. I was at the Tackle Box then, and though everyone there shared a wide-eyed, what-thehell-is-going-on moment, the music never faltered. The Sons of Jefferson were onstage at the time and never skipped a beat, the crowd started clapping and stomping to drive the band onward in lieu of electricity, and astute audience members and volunteers pulled out their cellphones to capture the required video documentation. (The venue was prepared when a second blackout struck May 1).

If you are ever in a situation where the proverbial shit hits the fan, the Tackle Box is a good place to be—the business’ official slogan is “Beer, Food, and Guns.” Within minutes, Richard Peeples, co-owner of the operation, had generators fired up and power flowing, but the P.A. system was too much for the generators, and one ended up blowing.

Unfazed, Peeples ran out and bought another one. This establishment was fully vested in this challenge.

Still, the blackout caused a momentary interruption in the log of video and audio evidence.

Ruck was forced to make a tough decision—carry on and assume that Guinness would accept the evidence of the first 4 1/2 days,

or reset the clock and start from scratch? After deliberating, Ruck chose the latter.

“It was sort of a blessing in disguise,” he confided shortly thereafter. He explained there was a steep learning curve the first few days, and the reset afforded the group a chance to start fresh with the knowledge they’d quickly accumulated. The power outage turned out to be a singularly defining and galvanizing moment.

“Losing power gave us strength,” said volunteer Haley.

“It became more intense after that.

People rallied, the town rallied.

After that happened, there was a big increase in interest and support from the community.”

Sound-tech Harrison Pratt recalled hearing about the outage on local radio station ZROCK: “I don’t remember which rock jock it was, but they were like, ‘Power is out from Redding to Sacramento,’ but then he holds his cellphone up and [says], ‘Check it out, the Tackle Box is still streaming.’”

Bolstered with new momentum, the

Longtime music promoter Syb Blythe made it a point to come down during the crucial early

morning hours and serve as an audience member: “By the fourth or fifth day you could see that people were really getting a clue that they couldn’t stay up more than three days straight,” she said.

“People were looking a little gray around the gills.”

Pratt was a workhorse behind the soundboard, but sound quality was challenging for a number of reasons. First, the sound system was a cobbled-together arsenal of loaned equipment, with components constantly shuffled in and out as speakers blew, monitors fizzled and mains imploded. Second, there was an incredibly eclectic lineup of performers—an acoustic singersongwriter playing a mic’d nylonstring guitar might be followed by a five-piece metal band, which might then be followed by a horn-driven funk ensemble. Sometimes the sound techs would have no clue what was coming next and, even if they did, the third major impediment to nailing the sound was the Guinness rule allowing for only five minutes between acts.

Early on, some performers complained about the sound quality on stage, but as time wore on, most people caught on to the concept that this event was not about the individual performers. It wasn’t about big names or draw or the fact that your band has been on tour or put out so many albums.

“This isn’t about the musicians; it’s about the event,” jazz vocalist Holly Taylor said. “The egos are taken out of it because you have these other rules to follow.”

What mattered was that the music never stopped. Unlike a “normal” gig, Chico Breaks the Record had no hierarchy or separation between the performers, the volunteers and the audience members.

Because a 10-person audience was required at all times, the person sitting in the quiet corner of the barroom at 5 a.m. was every bit as important as the person on stage with the guitar. We became an organism; a single entity, composed of many, joined in the same mission.

The Tackle Box became my safe harbor, a place I could head to in the middle of the night or the afternoon, whenever my mind raced with worry and guilt. I saw familiar faces and got to know the other people involved—especially the volunteers, because they were always there. These people became a family for me. Talking to others after some time has passed, I’ve found my experience was a shared one.

Erin Haley, a singer and guitarist who performed almost daily during the event, described what she felt was “an umbilical cord that led back to the Tackle Box.” Exploits and achievements from the event were posted on a regularly updated Facebook page and a live Internet-based broadcast of the event was carried on the website uStream.com. Even when people couldn’t be at the Tackle Box, they could tune in and follow the music on their cellphones or computers. The stream did more than just inform people already physically involved, but also drew people in and gave them something to be a part of.

In a recent Facebook post, Lisa Ann Sunday described how the Tackle Box and Chico Breaks the Record became a place of refuge during a challenging time: “For the first two weeks I followed closely on Facebook, envious of everyone down there but lacking the confidence to go alone. Then, about halfway

into it, I drove by after work and decided to stop. I found myself heading to Chico at 1, 2 even 3 in the morning to help keep the crowd above 10. Basically, what CBTR did for me was give me a sense of belonging somewhere.”

Rob Gage, a fly-fishing guide who became a regular witness, elaborated. “Everyone lives in their phones and their computers these days, and so the personal connection is getting lost,” he surmised. “To have a forum online, where people could watch and then go, ‘Wait a minute, I can go in there and physically be a part of it,’ I think that is super attractive to a lot of people.”

A large and heavy stone has been

lofted into our oftentimes calm little pond. It has splashed down and sunk to the bottom, but the ripples and reverberations are only beginning. The potential for expanding and unifying the scene, for cross-pollination, for audience outreach and appreciation, artist collaboration and erosion of genre, is tremendous. The longing for community has been clearly demonstrated. Now it is up to us, music lovers and performers alike, to seize the moment and to act.

Some mornings lately, when it’s 4 a.m. and I can’t sleep, I have an inkling to get in the truck and head south to Chico, but there is no music playing now. I think of something Nick Sharpless, an employee of the Tackle Box, opined when remembering the record attempt: “It’s really weird that it’s so quiet Ω now.”

During the late afternoon of Tuesday,

Talking to others after some time has passed, I’ve found my experience was a shared one.

Erin Haley, a singer and guitarist who performed almost daily during the event, described what she felt was “an umbilical cord that led back to the Tackle Box.” Exploits and achievements from the event were posted on a regularly updated Facebook page and a live Internet-based broadcast of the event was carried on the website uStream.com. Even when people couldn’t be at the Tackle Box, they could tune in and follow the music on their cellphones or computers. The stream did more than just inform people already physically involved, but also drew people in and gave them something to be a part of.

In a recent Facebook post, Lisa Ann Sunday described how the Tackle Box and Chico Breaks the Record became a place of refuge during a challenging time: “For the first two weeks I followed closely on Facebook, envious of everyone down there but lacking the confidence to go alone. Then, about halfway

into it, I drove by after work and decided to stop. I found myself heading to Chico at 1, 2 even 3 in the morning to help keep the crowd above 10. Basically, what CBTR did for me was give me a sense of belonging somewhere.”

Rob Gage, a fly-fishing guide who became a regular witness, elaborated. “Everyone lives in their phones and their computers these days, and so the personal connection is getting lost,” he surmised. “To have a forum online, where people could watch and then go, ‘Wait a minute, I can go in there and physically be a part of it,’ I think that is super attractive to a lot of people.”

A large and heavy stone has been

lofted into our oftentimes calm little pond. It has splashed down and sunk to the bottom, but the ripples and reverberations are only beginning. The potential for expanding and unifying the scene, for cross-pollination, for audience outreach and appreciation, artist collaboration and erosion of genre, is tremendous. The longing for community has been clearly demonstrated. Now it is up to us, music lovers and performers alike, to seize the moment and to act.

Some mornings lately, when it’s 4 a.m. and I can’t sleep, I have an inkling to get in the truck and head south to Chico, but there is no music playing now. I think of something Nick Sharpless, an employee of the Tackle Box, opined when remembering the record attempt: “It’s really weird that it’s so quiet Ω now.”

During the late afternoon of Tuesday,

May 5, the jam band playing a ramshackle version of “We Are the Champions” finally melted down and the music stopped. It had been a long haul, both mentally and physically, and there was a shared sense of satisfaction and relief among the many who’d become vested in the effort.

“A band like Arcade Fire is ‘orchestral pop’ because they’ve got 10 people playing super epic songs with horns and strings and whatnot in a huge arena,” Patzner said. “We’re ‘chamber pop’ because we’ve got four people, a couple of whom are playing classical instruments in a nonclassical way, and we’re playing a badass concert at The Maltese.”

Foxtails Brigade has been through Chico in the past, with Patzner and vocalist/guitarist Laura Weinbach playing as a duo. But the band’s show June 24 at The Maltese Bar & Tap Room will mark the group’s first time through town as a full band, including bassist Joe Lewis and drummer Dominic Mercurio (a fifth member, percussionist and vibraphone player Josh Pollock, doesn’t join the band on the road).

Foxtails Brigade’s current tour dates (which also include a stop June 25 at The Roundup Saloon in Red Bluff) come on the heels of the band’s recently

announced signing to Oakland-based label OIM Records. The label is a partnership between Oakland music promoter Sarah Sexton, musician Angelica Tavella (who, performing as Nyx, has also made Chico a regular destination in recent years) and producer/manager Jeff Saltzman, whose production credits include The Killers’ 2004 breakout album, Hot Fuss.

“We’re super excited to be working with OIM,” said Patzner. “Their first project was this compilation of Oakland bands, all produced by Jeff Saltzman. They asked us if we wanted to record a song with him for that and it turned out to be a great experience. Little did we know that they were actually using the process as a way of finding bands to sign to their label.”

In addition to signing to the label, the band also worked with Saltzman on its forthcoming, self-titled full-length, which will be the first to feature the band’s current, fleshed-out lineup. The album features both new songs and songs that have been featured in the band’s live repertoire for years. Although the album’s release date has yet to be announced, the band is releasing a video for the album’s first single, “Far Away and Long Ago,” later this month. The video was directed by drummer Mercurio, who, according to Patzner, is “a real film director.”

“The video is sooooo gangster,” Patzner said. “I wish I could tell you more, but I don’t want to give it away. Just ... you’re gonna love it.” In the meantime, the band is excited to be taking the new material on the road. Patzner is particularly psyched to be coming back through Chico.

“Chico has always been one of my favorite tour stops,” he said. “My old band Judgement Day used to play crazy metal shows in Chico all the time and I met some of my favorite people ever back then.”

And though Foxtails Brigade is decidedly un-metal, the band promises a live show that is anything but subdued.

“A lot of our songs were written just to be played live,” Patzner said. “As much as we love recording, I think we love playing live even more. Hopefully people will come ready to party.” Ω

Perfect Square Prior to the prevalence of the Internet, gamers relied on Nintendo Power for video-game previews, news, reviews, walk-throughs and entertainment.

In 1992, the monthly magazine serialized legendary manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori’s adaptation of Super Nintendo game The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Collected here, the 12-issue series is a trip almost 25 years in the past as the story loosely follows the game, introducing new characters and plot twists. It’s interesting to see Link portrayed as a bumbling punchline, which was common for Nintendo heroes in the early 1990s, when a seemingly endless stream of slapstick cartoons filled the after-school airwaves and pro wrestler “Captain Lou” Albano played Mario in a live-action series. Ishinomori makes the Zelda story his own with enough inspiration from the game that it starts an itch to fire up the old console like only a classic video game can. The real nostalgia comes for subscribers who remember anxiously checking the mail, waiting for the next issue to continue the story—free of spoilers or trolls crapping over everything on anonymous forums. More than anything, the comic series is a video-game time capsule (A Link to the Past, if you will) that not only recalls the games of years past, but a long-gone gaming community and atmosphere as well.

Wilder Mind Mumford & Sons Glassnote Sometimes a band has to reinvent itself sonically, consequences or detractors be damned.

Listening to the 180 that Mumford & Sons has taken on Wilder Mind, one can’t help but feel this notion was playing through the minds of the band members for a while. Sure, Mumford & Sons’ penchant for lyrical content that looks for the silver linings in struggles remains, but if you loved yourself some folk-pop, or whatever the hell you want to call the band’s first two albums, that ship has sailed. In its place is throaty, growling rock ’n’ roll (“The Wolf”), ambient pop in the vein of Coldplay’s “Midnight” (“Believe”), and a number of driving pop-rock numbers that show off a newfound love of echoing guitars and quick-paced drums (“Ditmas,” “Tompkins Square Park” and the title track chief among them). Fans have denounced the band for abandoning them in favor of early U2- or Coldplay-sounding rock, while others have embraced the change. Mumford & Sons seems invigorated by the fresh, raucous sound, which gives this album some extra oomph. It’s a wilder than expected ride.

by me. Especially on a Sunday afternoon when the temperature in downtown Chico is already pushing the 100 degree by Carey Wilson mark.

So, for my most recent Sunday brunch adventure, I invited a Christian Michaels couple of friends to the cool and Ristoranté comfortable confines of local 192 e. third st. fine-dining institution Christian 894-4005 Michaels on the corner of Third www.chicochristian and Wall streets downtown. The michaels.com pleasantly appointed dining room, lunch: with its equally pleasant adjointues.-fri., ing lounge, struck me as just the 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Dinner: right setting for a leisurely mix of daily 5 p.m.-close conversation, people-watching, sunday brunch: appetite-sating and perhaps a 10 a.m.-2 p.m. thirst- and nerve-soothing beverage or two.

Not having thought or planned far enough in advance to make reservations, I half expected to be put on a waiting list after glancing through the dining room’s plate-glass windows and seeing its many tables filled to capacity with a large and cheerful multigenerational gathering of Sunday diners. But when we entered through the lounge door, the hostess/bartender glanced into the full dining room and then offered us a seat at one of the lounge’s window-side tables for four.

Our hostess seated us and took drink orders— water, Bloody Mary ($7) and coffee ($3 with refills) for myself, and compatriots Missy and Nevada, respectively—then quickly returned with the brunch menus. Reading our obviously unhurried vibe, she allowed us plenty of time to discuss our options and make our decisions. Which was very considerate, because there are plenty of options to choose from.

The midday-meal side of the brunch menu offers everything from a hearty prime-rib sandwich ($12, with “sauteed mushrooms, onions, havarti cheese and roasted garlic aioli on a ciabatta roll with a side of creamy horseradish and pommes frites) to classic favorites such as Caesar salad ($12) and a pasta pomodoro ($11,

add prawns, grilled chicken or Italian sausage for $5).

We all decided to order from the more breakfasty side of the menu, which features several omelet and scramble options, including an ominously named but delicious-sounding Black and Blue omelet ($12) that combines prime rib, caramelized onions, mushrooms and Gorgonzola cheese with potato cake on the side.

There’s also a breakfast bacon potato pizza ($12), as well as crab crepes ($12) made with red onion, tomatoes, cream cheese and avocado (and potato cake on the side). Add $4, and Champagne is included with any entree.

Going traditional, I opted for French toast ($11), which, as advertised, consisted of a “golden-brown battered croissant topped with strawberries, caramel and powdered sugar, served with maple syrup”—not to mention a thick stripe of whipped cream along two edges of the croissant. The strawberries were juicy and just ripe enough to add a hint of fresh tartness that perfectly complemented and enhanced the sweet components of the plate, which I uncharacteristically ate every bite of, using the last chunk of maplesoaked croissant to mop up the gooey remnants of whipped cream, caramel, sugar and syrup.

My companions both chose variations of the eggs Benedict ($14), made with a toasted croissant served and topped with fresh-made Hollandaise sauce (with a choice of crab cake, prime rib or smoked turkey and avocado). Nevada couldn’t resist the crab cake option, and one good-sized bite affirmed that choice.

Missy chose the smoked turkey and avocado, which gave the dish a more traditional flavor profile, along with the bonus of perfectly ripened avocado slices lending a healthful air to the richness of the meal.

Both dishes featured perfectly cooked soft-boiled eggs with bright yolks.

Christian Michaels is a little pricier than many brunch options in Chico, but it’s worth the extra cost.

The restaurant is beautiful, with natural lighting, and the delicious food is perfectly prepared. Plus, we were able to finish dining at a leisurely pace befitting a Sunday brunch, unhurried by any sense that we should clear out for incoming diners, and left profoundly satisfied with the hospitality and comfort of the experience. □

This weekend’s race is the ROAR (Remotely Operated Auto Racers) 1/8-scale Fuel Offroad Nationals, at which 180 racers will compete for two national titles. Jelich said many of the big names in RC racing will be there to take a shot at the title, including the current world champ, Canadian Ty Tessman.

For the uninitiated, Jelich offered a quick primer on RC racing. RC vehicles range in scales, with oneeighth-size cars averaging close to 2 feet long. This weekend’s competition will focus on off-road buggies and “truggies.”

“Those are the two premier types of vehicles in RC racing,” he said. “Buggies are the most popular.

They’re basically the F1 [Formula One] cars of the RC world. Truggies are kind of like the ‘monster truck’ version of buggies—they have bigger tires, longer arms, they take the bumps a little better and both have about the same top speed.

“What these vehicles are capable of doing is mindboggling,” he added. “They have fully adjustable and independent suspensions, sway bars, triple differentials, adjustable valves in the shocks, adjustable gearings, tows, ride heights, kick-ups … a tremendous amount of effort goes into the engineering of these vehicles.”

weekend start at about $400, Jelich said, while a professional-level rig averages about $1,500. “The industry does a pretty good job at designing ready-torun cars if you just wanna come out and play, but like any sport, there are different levels.”

Winning is more than a matter of who has the most expensive toys, however.

“Having a competitive setup is important, but only about half of what it takes to win,” Jelich said.

“The other half is driving. You’re probably not going to luck into a national victory; you have to have the full package, the equipment and the skill. It’s going to come down to the decisions you make and the mistakes you avoid, and how well your car is working in relation to the other racers. If you choose the wrong setup, you could be losing a half-second per lap, and that makes all the difference.”

Jelich noted setup considerations even include gas mileage, with racers carefully computing how many times they’ll need to refuel each race. Stamina and mental endurance are also factors for good racers: At big main events, like the culminating races of the ROAR nationals this Sunday, racers drive for an hour straight, and those who complete the most laps win.

AMain.com (formerly A Main Hobbies) runs a retail store on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, and also has an indoor track—the Outback Raceway—at the business’ online distribution center on Otterson Drive. Both tracks host about four major races each year, and are available for anyone’s use with daily or monthly passes.

Jelich also noted that, though racers come in all ages, RC racing at the pro level is more than child’s play.

“The top-level guys are being invested in by marketing campaigns of these product companies to come out and produce results,” he said. “Some of their sponsorship agreements have $5,000 bonuses for a national title and they have multiple sponsors, so some of them could be shooting for a $25,000 payday on Sunday.”

He also noted big events at the track benefit the larger community; this weekend’s races, for example, are bringing hundreds of visitors to Chico to rent hotels, eat, and look for entertainment beyond the racetrack.

The track is open for competitors to practice Thursday and Friday, with qualifying runs on Saturday and main events on Sunday. Food trucks and other refreshments will be on-site. □

A mystic ‘western’

Breathtaking scenery, cinematography create background for unique adventure film

Jthe auja hypnotic, and extraordinarily good-looking. It’s set in Patagonian wilderness in the 19th century and its story , from Argentina, is slow, strange, mysterious,

centers on a Danish army officer (a brusque Viggo Mortensen) who, fully armed and on horseback, plunges into that wilderness with the aim by Juan-Carlos of retrieving his runaway teenage daughter.

Selznick It’s kind of a western, but not at all a conventional one. While it has horses and guns and wide open spaces—and the bare bones of a familiar western plot—Jauja gives precedence to its harshly beautiful landscapes and the vast distances that dwarf the story’s ragged and rather lonely human dramas.

Timo Salminen’s colorful cinematography Jauja is a marvel of near-hallucinatory brilliance.

Starring Viggo Mortensen, (The film as a whole is the work of Lisandro Viilbjork Mallin Alonso, who is now well-established as one of Agger, and Ghita the most esteemed Argentine filmmakers.)

When an Argentine officer takes an openly lascivious interest in her, Dinesen is visibly Fair upset, but it is the officer’s young aide (Diego Roman) who flees the camp with her.

Another Argentine officer, a flamboyant European aristocrat and an officer gone rogue Good all figure in various stages of Dinesen’s search.

This gently incisive biopic builds its portrait of

Brian Wilson through a kind of triangulation: Paul Dano plays Wilson in the 1960s heyday of the Beach Boys; John Cusack plays the Wilson of the 1980s, cut off from the Beach Boys and dominated by the creepy Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti); and Elizabeth Banks plays Melinda Ledbetter, girlfriend, future wife and key enabler of Wilson’s recovery from the emotional wreckage of family life and pop music success.

Filmmaker Bill Pohlad builds his portrait via an alternating montage of episodes from the ’60s and ’80s. The central thread is a cumulative impression of the emotional and professional travails of a strangely inspired pop music genius, with some psychodrama and a little pop music history sketched in along the way.

Dano and Cusack are both excellent, with each bringing separate and distinctive qualities to the film’s necessarily composite portrait.

The radiant intelligence of Banks’ performance is a saving grace for Wilson’s story and for the film as a whole. But the film’s richest moment of emotion might just come during the closing credits, which are accompanied by a clip of Wilson performing live during a 1980s concert. Ω

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Age of Ultron is just flat. We get a bunch of scenes teasing future Marvel movies and, with the exception of an interesting smackdown between Iron Man and the Hulk, the cluttered action sequences feel repetitive. The Ultron of the movie’s title is a series of robots inhabited by an artificialintelligence program initiated by Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). Stark, thinking he can create a security force that can protect the world and achieve “peace in our time,” gets a little ahead of himself and starts the program, only to discover that A.I. can sometimes mean Absolute Insanity.

The program goes AWOL and produces the anti-human Ultron. Voiced by James Spader, Ultron is a one-note villain out to destroy humanity who lacks the personality of other recent comic-book villains—e.g., Tom Hiddleston’s Loki from the first Avengers. Perhaps director Joss Whedon was the wrong man for the gig. The sequel begs for a darker tonal shift, a sort of The Empire Strikes Back for the Avengers series. Instead, the film is one of the year’s cinematic letdowns. Cinemark 14. Rated PG-13 —B.G.

The HBO TV series jumps to the big screen and finds movie star Vince and his boys faced with a make-or-break opportunity that will either cement their place in Tinseltown or send them back home to Queens, New York. Cinemark 14. Rated R.

Insidious: Chapter 3

Entry number three in the supernatural horror series is a prequel that tells the story of a psychic trying to help a teen girl who is being targeted by a supernatural entity and bombarded by spirits. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Tom Hardy is a perfectly good choice to play George Miller’s heroically desperate antihero Mad Max, but the real star of this fourth installment of the franchise is the desperate and gallant Furiosa (Charlize Theron), who is trying to rescue the pregnant, bikini-clad trophy wives of the grotesquely masked archvillain Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). And Furiosa and at least a couple of the brides are fully capable of defending themselves, as are the wizened lady bikers who turn up late in the action.

The film’s macho feminism is dramatized via the brief, fugitive partnership of Furiosa and Max. As such, it stands as the latest of the thematic crosscurrents that mark the continuing evolution of the series’ testosterone-fueled fantasies. Max plays a key role in the lady warriors’ survival, but he must walk away from the community he has helped preserve. That said, Fury Road is every bit as brutal and rambunctious as its predecessors. While it uses more CGI than some early reviews might lead you to believe, it has fierce, muscular intensity to its stunt-heavy action sequences, and a strikingly visceral sense of human flesh in its portraiture. Pitch Perfect 2

Using pretty much the same premise as its predecessor, this sequel to the popular musical comedy finds the all-female a capella troupe faced with having to overcome public humiliation during a performance by winning their way back into good standing at an international competition. Cinemark 14.

San Andreas

If you love Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and you think California sucks balls from top to bottom, you are going to love San Andreas. There’s plenty of glorious visual mayhem in the film, including earthquakes, tsunamis and Johnson’s totally out of control upper-body art. But, sadly, it also contains something nearly as devastating—dialogue so vapid, so shitty, it crushes the viewer and the film alike. The first quake hits outside California, at the Hoover Dam, and director Brad Peyton shows no sentimentality for national landmarks. The dam is history. A renowned scientist (Paul Giamatti) sets out to warn the world of impending quakes, and then the really big ones start to hit, first in Los Angeles then in San Francisco. Rescue pilot Johnson commandeers a helicopter and sets out to save his wife in L.A. and then his daughter in the Bay Area because, you know, millions of people are dying, but he has this little inkling that he can still put his family back together. “Fatal Flaw” & “Dimed Out” by Titus Andronicus: One of the greatest bands in the world shares two songs from its forthcoming album (The Most Lamentable Tragedy, July 28)—the former a shout-along Clash-like arena anthem and the latter a shout-along Buzzcocks-like club rocker—to help you test how cool your neighbors are when the barbecue extends into the night.

“Sunday Candy” by Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment: Surf, the impressive, ambitious, multilayered rap/neo-soul/jazz/pop project (featuring Chance the Rapper, among others) deserves more than a mere column mention. It had been a long escrow, over three months. The seller had IRS liens and title hang-ups that had to be cleared before closing.

“Sorry I got a little vocal at times,” said Judy. My ears still rang from her vocals.

“I love this place,” she said now. “It was all worth it.” We stood on the porch and admired the treelined street, the 1950s neighborhood of houses with raised foundations and hardwood floors. I helped move a few boxes into the house and we toasted each other with a glass of cheer.

The Sewer-Rooter guy leaned in the doorway and called out, “Sewer line from the house to the street is collapsed. I told that lady she had a problem the last time I was here.”

Judy vocalized: “The last time you were here?”

“Yep, had to be about three or four months ago.

I told that lady tree roots were breaking up the sewer line.”

The judge made his ruling: “California disclosure laws require all sellers of real property to disclose ‘material facts that may affect the value or desirability’ of a property. Therefore, the court finds the seller responsible for the cost of a new sewer line.”

He turned to me. “Any lessons learned here today?”

I dropped my head. “Yes,” I said. “Get a sewer-line inspection for the sale of every house.”

“Yes!” shouted Judy Jacklin.

Catastrophic comes to mind. It was the worst plumbing backup I’ve ever seen, more like an explosion. Boxes, furniture and Judy stood in ankle-deep sewage sludge. Judy wore a face mask.
