ridiculed because of their race—or worse, they may have been the target of a hate crime. How disturbing.

The fact that the alleged perpetrators are teenagers makes no difference.

The ignorant and intimidating behavior described by the McGriff family is inexcusable and it needs to stop. Moreover, apologies need to be made, and not just from the offending youths. That’s because the family in question has repeatedly sought help from the Chico Police Department and Chico High School administrators, and the response has been less than adequate (see Ken Smith’s write-up on page 9).

The school’s principal, Jim Hanlon, declined to say whether the kids, whom the CN&R has no interest in naming, have been punished. Nor did he address this newspaper’s inquiries into whether the school has policies related to racial discrimination. While we’re firm believers in due process, we also believe in swift and firm consequences for such unacceptable behavior. As it stands, the school has done so little that the family felt it necessary to contact this newspaper. Instead, it should use this situation as a teaching moment.

Meanwhile, it’s clear from the McGriffs’ account of interactions with a Chico police officer that the department needs a briefing on racial sensitivity.

Using the term “colored” is insensitive, and that’s at best. It’s hard to believe someone whose job involves interacting with the public would use such language.

February is Black History Month, and as demonstrated by our story last week about a Ku Klux Klan parade in downtown Chico back in the early part of the last century, Chico has a history of racism. The McGriff family’s recent experience, along with other stories we’ve reported about race issues over the years, is an ugly reminder that Chico has much work to do when it comes to race relations. The question is, what are we as a community willing to do about it? Ω

Restrictions won’t do It’s no wonder local medical cannabis advocates are filing a lawsuit against

Butte County to overturn Measure A. Back when county officials first started hammering out an ordinance to regulate growing, the effort involved parties from both sides of the issue. But the supes interfered and put further restrictions on what we viewed as a solid compromise—one this paper advocated for during the midterm elections.

The outcome of the election made it very clear that the citizens of Butte County want restrictions, but what the voters aren’t “getting” is that people—whether pot profiteers, including the cartel growers, or those who truly use the herb medicinally—aren’t going to stop growing cannabis.

Marijuana prohibition is and always will be a losing battle. People have always found a way to either grow or buy pot, and they always will.

Restrictions won’t do much good, either. That’s in large part because local governments do not have the funding to enforce them. And to us, the large amount of cash currently allocated to that effort—nearly $450,000 at the county level—seems like a huge waste of resources.

Californians must find the will to eliminate the profit motive that currently enriches criminals; forces growers to seek cover in the sensitive foothill regions, endangering watersheds and wildlife; and contributes to the exploitation of Mexican nationals who are forced to tend to illegal grows on public lands.

Other states are ahead of California when it comes to legalizing the recreational use of cannabis, and they are implementing their laws with great success. When 2016 rolls around and voters are contemplating a ballot initiative to do the same here, the only sensible thing is to once and for all bring marijuana sales into the daylight, making it a safe enterprise—not to mention a lucrative one for government coffers. Legalize it. Ω

An uncivil servant The thing about public service is that it’s public. That is to say, those who become politicians are in the spotlight, and that light doesn’t go off outside of public meetings. Take, for instance, last week, when CN&R reporter Howard Hardee and Chico Vice Mayor Sean Morgan ended up at the same sandwich shop. Morgan may not have recognized Hardee and his dinner date, who were the only other patrons there. But Hardee, who’s been covering City Council meetings fairly regularly for the past year, recognized Morgan right off the bat. In fact, Morgan was standing directly behind Hardee.

It was just an ordinary evening in a quiet eatery, which is why Hardee was so taken aback when an agitated Morgan, no more than five minutes after setting foot in the place and ordering his food, said he couldn’t wait any longer, cut out as the food-handler was dressing his sandwich, and dropped an F-bomb on the way out the door. Evidently, his patience is about as short as that buzz-cut he sports.

Morgan famously spoke the mother of all expletives from the dais during his first year on the council, making that newbie mistake of forgetting to turn off his mic. I’m a little surprised now that he’s vice mayor that he’s cursing about town.

I don’t have an aversion to the F-word myself, but there’s a time and a place for it. And that doesn’t include directing it at food-service workers because you’re running late. The only thing “fucking outrageous,” as Morgan put it when he stormed out of the sandwich shop, was his behavior.

Somehow that brings me to Chico Enterprise-Record reporter Roger Aylworth, a true gentleman. In his most recent weekly column, Aylworth noted that he was called into Editor David Little’s office last week and asked to retire earlier than his planned July departure. His last day with that paper is now this Friday, Feb. 13. That’s a bad sign from a newspaper in a struggling chain that’s put many of its papers or their facilities up for sale recently (the E-R announced last month that its building at East Park Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway was sold to a real estate investor).

It goes without saying that the E-R is losing a vast amount of institutional knowledge with Aylworth’s exit.

Between his excellent work as a Chico reporter and his time as the editor of the Oroville Mercury Register, he spent close to 39 years as a local newspaperman.

But for those who worked with him, it means losing an institution in the newsroom. I sat probably 15 feet from Aylworth for four years, back when I was a reporter for the E-R. He had the uncanny ability to look into my eyes and tell when I was getting a migraine. That’s because his wife, the saintly Susan, and mother also suffered from those terrible headaches and he had become familiar with a certain look. Aylworth was always kind-hearted and thoughtful. I enjoyed being his colleague, and though I haven’t worked with him for many years, I’ll miss his presence in the local journalism community.

Bad call on booze Re “Blight and booze” (Newslines, by Howard Hardee, Feb. 5): There must be something in the water in Butte County. Once again, the Chico City Council approved yet more alcohol-pushing venues in a town with an excess. Now it approved alcohol sales in a gallery—what next, giving a liquor license to a daycare center?

For purposes of buying alcohol, Chico should be considered a single unit. Holding the line on future license approvals might help limit the unrestricted sense of alcohol use that pervades the campus if not the town (the athletes who recently violated drinking rules for campus clubs).

Shame on PG&E Re “For love of trees” (Newsline, by Meredith J. Graham, Jan. 29): What a pity! Magnificent sycamores and elms shamelessly cut down at the Oroville Cemetery by PG&E. These heritage trees, one of which was 187 years old, were obviously in prime condition, furnishing shade and oxygen for their community. This needless slaughter occurred despite the heroic efforts of the Oroville area’s caring conservationists, who were finally displaced at the cemetery.

PG&E’s bogus claims of safety reasons are patently false. Tree roots don’t seek gas lines; they seek water or sewer lines. (PG&E’s sordid history is known to many, beginning with its takeover of the Almanor Basin in the early days; it was then known as the Great Western Power Co. They later built multiple dams in Feather River Canyon in their quest for power.)

Other communities have refused to allow such depredations, compelling PG&E to move gas lines. Oroville’s City Council and Judge Stephen Benson have much to answer for. Such degradation may be headed for the Chico area, including the Midway’s beautiful trees. Do our present City Council and Board of Supervisors have the will (and wisdom) to stop this stupidity? Elections do matter, folks.

On avoiding World War III As I write this letter, Germany, France and the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) are pushing for a ceasefire and negotiations for peace in the increasingly violent civil war raging between the European-leaning Western Ukraine (Kiev) and the Russian-leaning Eastern Ukraine (primarily the two states of Donetsk and Lugansk). German Chancellor Angela Merkel repeatedly states that she sees no military solution to the fighting in eastern Ukraine.

Also as I write this letter, the U.S. Congress presses for more war, pushing to send heavy military equipment to the right-wing Kiev government of Western Ukraine. And President Obama’s language increasingly sounds like the drumbeat for war as well.

Western governments and Western press blame the conflict on Russian aggression, but there is a more ominous side to this story; the background of what could become WWIII! Between Dec. 11 and 15, Congress passed what became the Ukraine Freedom Support Act— 2014. President Obama signed it the following Thursday.

The bill includes about six long, dry pages of specific Russian arms sales and bank accounts of key Russian business owners and investors whom the president would have the power to sanction.

On the last page is a series of quite ominous powers also given to the president, including: to facilitate the placement of missile sites along the Russian border; facilitate the privatization of Ukraine’s natural resources; promote loans from the World Bank to U.S. oil companies for exploration and extraction of oil and natural gas in Ukraine; allow U.S. NGOs, who have been permitted by Russia to operate nonpolitically in Russia, to organize, now, with Putin’s adversaries there.

could further inflame the already deadly situation in Ukraine deadly.

‘You lose twice’ Re “Just common sense” (Letters,

by Mark Sorensen, Feb. 5): “Crony capitalism” is where private business gets a benefit from government that other businesses don’t get. The Hotel Diamond was restored using millions of dollars of taxpayer loans. Should it default, our city will get stuck with a nasty bill. But since it is making money, the owner, Wayne Cook, keeps the profits. Socialize the risk; privatize the profit.

Our City Council has voted to block the public from using 16 more spaces in the downtown parking garage in order to give even more free parking to the Hotel Diamond. Travelers to Chico who can’t find a room at the Diamond will stay elsewhere, pay the occupancy tax elsewhere, and dine elsewhere. For example, someone staying at Oxford Suites will pay occupancy tax, and cross the street to one of several restaurants where they can eat, and pay sales tax.

So for the mayor to wrongly claim that Hotel Diamond will pay for its parking from increased sales tax and occupancy tax is poor logic.

So the City Council excludes you from parking spaces, and tells you they are paid for by taxes they would have gotten anyway. Underfunded city plus parking shortage means you lose twice.

With CUSD, I’d look at their management first. Did they promote people who were never teachers? Probably. Do clerks and secretaries wield more power than educators? Probably. Do they promote the compliant, or the best, brightest and most creative?

School boards indeed are responsible for results despite what the previous letter writer stated.

The writer gave a sports analogy that the owner doesn’t call the plays. The Warriors’ owner made a change and got Steve Kerr and encouraged him to make changes.

Awesome. Education needs to do the same to avoid bankruptcy like Radio Shack.

Give teachers more freedom to jump from the barrel. It’s the only way to success.

After reading the letter from a former school board member comparing board members to movie ticket takers who don’t have any effect on outcomes, I wanted to scream. That’s hardly a comparison. Does the producer of the movie have an effect?

When elected officials feel no responsibility in how the CUSD operates, the outcome is predictable. These are the same people who run for elected office on a platform of change, holding people accountable, often telling the public to throw them out if they can’t make a difference, and then as soon as they are in the position, they claim they can’t do a thing.

A worthwhile vision Safe Space was the vision of a small but intrepid group of individuals who gave themselves the name Chico Housing Action Team and stepped up to open the doors of the Chico Peace and Justice Center, and then the Jesus Center, with all-volunteer help, for homeless individuals for 15 nights last winter.

This winter, supported locally by four churches—Unitarian Universalist, Trinity United Methodist, Bidwell Presbyterian and East Avenue Community (Nazarene)— along with the Jesus Center, Show Love Thrift store, Chico Laundry Co., Has Beans Coffee Roasters, Skyway Storage, countless individual and group donations, and with many hours of service from around 275 community volunteers, the concept of ‘Safe Space’ became a reality for 50 nights for as many as 58 homeless individuals each night.

A total of 210 different homeless individuals were served; fed a warm meal, slept safely through the night, and departing in the early morning with a hot beverage.

My experiences with Safe Space have given me new insights into the root causes of homelessness, the desperation and helplessness it can foster, and also newfound respect for many of the homeless guests I was privileged enough to meet, who manage to survive with their hope intact, and whose humanity shines forth when given the opportunity.

The late Mexican-American human rights activist César Chavez famously popularized the slogan “Sí, se puede,” which translates roughly to “Yes, it can be done.” It’s fitting, then, that those continuing his work would be honored with the 2015 César Chavez “Sí Se Puede” Human Rights Award.

This year’s honoree is Chico State professor Susan Green, who teaches Chicano studies and history and serves on the university’s Chicano/Latino Council. The award is handed down by the California Teachers Association (CTA) to honor individuals who have helped the Latino community make strides toward legal and social equality, according to a Chico State press release.

Green teaches courses in MexicanAmerican history and serves as faculty adviser for MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán), a student organization that advocates for access to higher education for Chicanos.

Green will be presented with the award at CTA’s Equity and Human Rights Conference in San Francisco on March 7.

BAD FINANCIAL ADVICE

A local financial adviser has been accused of bilking nearly $90,000 from a 91-year-old Chico retirement home resident.

Jeffery McClure, a personal banker who worked for Wells Fargo Advisors, allegedly gained the trust of a woman living at The Oakmont. The woman authorized McClure to pay her rent and other expenses, according to a press release from the Chico Police Department. McClure allegedly wrote dozens of checks to himself totaling $88,850 between December 2012 and August 2014.

Butte County Adult Protective Services received a tip about McClure by a mandated reporter working at The Oakmont last September. The CPD’s Detective Bureau assisted in the investigation. McClure was arrested on Tuesday (Feb. 10) and charged with identity theft, forgery, embezzlement and elder abuse.

BHS HAS NEW TOP DOG

The Butte Humane Society has announced that Katrina Davis-Woodcox has been named executive director of the local animal-welfare nonprofit, following the resignation of Chuck Tourtillott, who is “pursuing other opportunities.”

Davis-Woodcox (pictured) is a familiar face in the local nonprofit realm. She served as the executive director of the Downtown Chico Business Association for 12 years, and joined BHS, as its development director, just over a year ago.

“BHS has been providing humanitarian care to dogs, cats and other animals for 104 years,” DavisWoodcox said in a press release. “With plans in progress to build a new BHS facility and campus in the next few years, it is an honor to be a part of something that will ensure our legacy for the next 100 years.”

For the last 2 1/2 years, she’s used medical marijuana to remedy specific symptoms, such as uncontrollable spasms in her limbs, and to stave off her disease’s general progression—all with minimal use of traditional pharmaceutical drugs, she says. Now Murphy, 68, walks with a cane and feels more mobile than she has in years.

Using pot medicinally has also helped Murphy and her diabetic husband, 61-year-old Ron Halvorson, manage their weight.

“Cannabis has had the greatest impact for us,” Murphy said.

That’s why the couple, along with many other medical marijuana users and growers throughout Butte County, fears what will come of Measure A, the ballot initiative passed into law by voters last November. Medi-pot advocates argue that the ordinance is prohibitively restrictive and ultimately will prevent many patients from accessing their medicine.

That’s the foundation for a lawsuit filed in Butte County Superior Court on Feb. 3 by San Rafael-based attorney Scot Candell, who is representing Donald Ehrsam, Raymond Sperry and Gina Endler of Oroville and Douglas Gunning of Berry Creek. The lawsuit seeks an injunction pro-

hibiting enforcement of the ordinance.

Candell told the CN&R that Measure A “violates the spirit of [California’s] Compassionate Use Act—that everyone can get their medicine, and everyone is treated equally.”

“Measure A stomps on patients’ rights,” echoed Murphy, who is not involved in the lawsuit but supports it.

“We are entitled by law to have access to cannabis.”

The state’s Compassionate Use Act—aka

Proposition 215—was passed in 1996 primarily to allow patients with a valid doctor’s recommendation to grow and possess marijuana for personal medical use. However, under a 2013 California Supreme Court ruling, California cities and counties have discretion to regulate medical cannabis cultivation however they see fit.

Members of the Butte County Board of Supervisors began crafting a local cultivation ordinance back in 2011, and in 2013 they approved guidelines that limited the size of gardens based on number of plants—not on the square footage of the gardens—maxing out at 99 plants on lots 40 acres or larger.

But vocal constituents urged the board to amend the ordinance to address issues related to pot grows in the county’s eastern foothills—namely, environmental degradation caused by grading activity, pesticides and fertilizer, a perceived increase in crime, and general

nuisances such as the plant’s distinct odor. The first round of amendments was approved last December, and more followed in early 2014.

Among other requirements, the amendments limited gardens to a maximum of 150 square feet, and just 50 square feet on lots 5 acres or smaller.

Considering those guidelines overly restrictive, medi-pot proponents gathered signatures and crafted their own ordinance—Measure B—which would keep the existing ordinance intact. Measure A, on the other hand, was that same ordinance with all of the amendments included.

But on Election Day (Nov. 4), Measure A passed with about 60 percent of the vote. As District Attorney Mike Ramsey recently told the CN&R, he believes the county’s voters spoke emphatically.

“The public was clear,” he said.

“They said, ‘We’re going to allow some growing for true medical patients, but we want to greatly restrict the commercial growing going on in our hills to the detriment of our environment and safety.’”

Candell acknowledges that Butte County has the right to impose restrictions on medical marijuana cultivation, but he maintains the new ordinance unjustly discriminates against certain growers and users. For instance, on parcels greater than 5 acres and smaller than 10 acres, gardens that don’t exceed 100 square feet are permissible. Howev-

er, a parcel of that size requires more than one doctor’s recommendation.

One of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, Douglas Gunning, falls into this category.

He lives alone on 6 acres in Berry Creek.

“He can’t grow a single plant,” Candell said. “So, he has to go get a roommate if he wants to grow his medicine?

That doesn’t make any sense.”

In a phone call, County Counsel Bruce Alpert maintained that “isn’t an accurate depiction of how our ordinance works.” However, the county’s website does specify that properties of that size “must have two or more recommendations associated with the plants.”

Candell also alleges that the ordinance discriminates against patients who are wheelchair-bound—like plaintiff Gina Endler of Oroville, who is paraplegic and applies cannabis topically for pain relief, she said over the phone. In the 50-square-foot area she’s allowed, building a 36-inch wide path through the garden to access all four sides of each plant would take up most of the space, she says, limiting her to growing one or two plants—not enough for a year’s worth of medical needs.

“Why should somebody be limited to one plant just because they’re in a wheelchair?” Candell asked.

Murphy and Halvorson said the garden restrictions also bode poorly for medical marijuana collectives, a model on which they depend for their medicine.

Previously, growers on large parcels could have as many as 99 plants, and therefore often supplied more than a dozen patients, many of whom couldn’t afford to purchase cannabis otherwise.

The new ordinance has made those larger operations illegal.

That’s bad news for Murphy and Halvorson. They live in a small apartment in Chico, where they can’t legally grow marijuana of their own. Neither can work due to disability, so they can’t afford to buy it, either, even if there were dispensaries in Butte County.

“We still have cannabis from last year’s grow,” Halvorson said. “But when we run out, it’s going to be a problem.”

Alpert told the CN&R that county officials

very much expected a lawsuit along these lines.

“These issues are generally raised whenever a local jurisdiction tries to regulate the cultivation of medical marijuana,” he said. “This is nothing new in terms of allegations—why the plaintiffs thought that what the county did was improper or illegal. We disagree.”

Based on decisions made by various courts throughout California, Alpert said, “the lawsuit has no merit.” He cited the 3rd District Court of Appeals recently upholding the city of Live Oak’s complete ban of medical marijuana cultivation.

The county must respond to the lawsuit within 30 days of filing. Ω

Hijinks or hate?

Local family alleges group of Chico High students guilty of racism, intimidation moving into a home near Chico High School in September Slitter,ince 2013, Kelly Butler-McGriff claims her family has had to deal with loud music, trespassing and disrespectful behavior from stu-

dents on a regular basis. But on Jan. 26, Butler-McGriff contends the actions of some of the students escalated from teenage hijinks to an act of racially motivated hate.

Butler-McGriff said she looked out the window of her living room that morning to see an SUV outfitted with a full-size Confederate flag on a short pole. The McGriffs are a multiracial family—ButlerMcGriff is white, married to Malik, who’s black, Malik’s mother and the couple’s three children live in the home. Butler-McGriff said the vehicle belonged to a member of a group of particularly problematic young men, and she believes it and the offending flag were parked near the McGriff home intentionally.

The Chico mom said she’s complained to high school administrators and the Chico Police Department an estimated 20 times regarding student behavior since occupying the home, and that morning called the school to complain about the flag. During the lunch hour, a school security guard asked the students—who were at the vehicle— to move, which they did, but she said they returned minutes later.

“I was standing on the porch holding my 3-year-old daughter, and I said, ‘He just told you to leave, get out of here.’” One of them looked straight at me and said, ‘Fuck you, you stupid nigger. What are you going to do about it?’”

“I was disgusted,” Butler-McGriff said, growing emotional as she recounted the incident. “I was shocked, appalled and of course felt completely disrespected.”

She said she immediately called the school again, and a secretary advised her to call the police immediately. She said Chico Police Officer Cameron Kovacs responded, spoke briefly to the students, and they left. But, she said, so did the officer, without attempting to speak to her or take a report.

It also wasn’t the last the McGriffs saw of the flag. At about 10:30 p.m., the family saw it again, this time staked into their front lawn.

“The response we feel like we’ve gotten is that nobody cares,” Butler-

McGriff said of police and school reaction following the racial slur and flag-planting, which her husband characterized as “bold and clear threats.” The McGriffs moved to Chico from the Bay Area, and said they’ve never experienced such blatant racism in their lives.

Butler-McGriff said she expressed the family’s fear and the fact they considered the flag-planting an act of intimidation, but claims an

This isn’t news to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has reported a boom in sexually transmitted diseases in seniors since 2007, with syphilis up 52 percent and chlamydia up 32 percent.

officer responded by saying, “It’s just a flag.” She said she was further convinced that authorities were insensitive to the incident when another officer, Sgt. Cesar Sandoval, asked during a follow-up phone interview on Feb. 5 if her teenage son was “colored.”

“I responded, ‘No, my son is half-black and half-white, he is not colored,’” Butler-McGriff said, noting Sandoval continued the interview unaware of his faux pas. Sandoval didn’t respond to a request for an interview as of press time.

The family was visited Jan. 27 by CHS Principal Jim Hanlon and Assistant Principal Mike Ellis, but Butler-McGriff said they seemed more worried about the victims’ reaction: “They asked if we were planning any retaliation,” she said.

In an email to the CN&R, Hanlon said he could share only limited facts about the incident due to student privacy.

“The neighbor reported that racial slurs were used, but we were unable to substantiate the allegation with any witnesses,” Hanlon wrote. “The flag was attached to the student’s vehicle, parked on a public street, not in the person’s yard … It was later reported that a flag was planted in the neighbor’s yard later that night, but there was no evidence it was a student responsible. The police are investigating the issue.”

Hanlon didn’t address inquiries about whether the students were disciplined or whether the school has policies regarding using racial slurs.

Butler-McGriff said she isn’t interested in lawsuits or filing more complaints: “I just want them to pay attention. I hope nobody else has to feel this way.”

She’s gotten some help toward that end from Michael Coyle, a Chico State political science professor and board member of the Chico chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Coyle said he’s helping the McGriffs reach out to local organizations to share their experience, and hopes the ugly incident will turn into something positive—a coalition of concerned citizens and organizations to address racism on a local level. He’s also contacted Chico High, and is hoping all parties involved can sit down and reach a personal understanding.

“We need to find out what’s going on in these kids’ heads,” he said. “It’s not about punishment; it’s about having them understand what they’re really doing and address the victims directly. It’s about healing the victims and transforming the offenders so they don’t continue in life thinking that this is an acceptable way to act.”

countywide ban of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the Butte County Board of Supervisors failed on Tuesday (Feb. 10) to adopt an ordinance that has been more than 10 months in the making.

Instead, the board directed county staff to craft an ordinance calling for conditional-use permits for fracking so each project can be considered on an individual basis.

The supes also called for an ordinance that would ban the deposit of fracking waste in Butte County storage wells.

The latter has already been written, county Counsel Bruce Alpert told the board, and will come before the supervisors within the next few months. The use-permit ordinance will be crafted and brought back later in the year, he said.

Fracking is the practice of using high-pressure water, sand and acidic chemicals to crack underground shale formations and free the gas and oil deposits trapped beneath them. It has been linked to earthquakes and the contamination of underground water supplies. But it is also seen as a means of helping make the country energy independent.

According to a 2009 editorial in The New York Times, the federal government does not have the authority to regulate fracking.

That’s because of a provision inserted into the 2005 federal energy bill by then-Vice President Dick Cheney, a former executive at Haliburton—the company that invented fracking in the 1940s.

However, last year California adopted its own fracking regulation—Senate Bill 4— which will go into effect on July 1. It requires a use permit, an environmental impact report, advanced public notice and nearby water-well testing before, during and Local fracking opponents set up shop in front of the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday (Feb. 10) hoping for the passage of a ban on the controversial practice.

Local ordinances, however, will take precedence over the state law, Alpert said.

The Butte County effort was initially

backed by four of the five supervisors who gave Alpert direction to write up an ordinance last April.

The latest meeting was standingroom-only with a large number of fracking opponents who, one after another, asked the supervisors to pass the local ordinance. These same folks, calling themselves Frack-Free Butte County, gathered enough signatures in 2014 to get a similar initiative on the June 2016 primary ballot.

But Alpert said that the ballot initiative is flawed “and will not be held up by courts if it were to pass.”

It was suggested that the group gather signatures for a petition that would reflect Alpert’s ordinance and put it before the voters as well, but activist Dave Garcia said that would most likely prove too confusing for the voters.

Chico State geology professor Todd Green said there are not many reservoirs of natural gas in Butte County. He was not suggesting that fracking won’t take place in the county, but if it does, it would be through already-established gas fields. There are 32 active gas wells in Butte County, he said, with no new ones drilled in more than 25 years.

Steve Bohlen, appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown as the state oil and gas supervisor and head of the

Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR), addressed the meeting as well.

While DOGGR’s mission is to regulate drilling, operations, maintenance and abandonment of gas and oil wells, he said, it is also to “encourage utilization of all methods and practices to increase ultimate recovery. You are in gas country.”

But he added that the county has a lot of subsurface basalt that makes drilling for gas here very difficult.

“The U.S. has become energy independent for the first time in 60 years because of fracking,” he said.

However, the state has not been regulating hydraulic fracturing and, as such, there is a lack of information concerning the wells that have been fracked over the years.

Once the public comment period was over, Supervisor Larry Wahl said he couldn’t support a ban on fracking. Supervisor Steve Lambert said that, while he is not a fan of fracking, he did not want the county to “become a trendsetter.”

“What I heard today is there is a bigger issue here than Butte County,” he said. “Butte County does not lead the cause. If we are doing this for our own reasons, then I’m on board. But I feel like we’re trying to make this a big cause.”

Supervisor Maureen Kirk made a motion to adopt the ordinance, but lacking a second from the other supervisors, the motion died.

he last of the stately sycamores and elms that lined the entrance to the Oroville Cemetery have been chopped and shipped away, despite the valiant efforts of a group of concerned citizens calling themselves Save Oroville Trees. After months of protest, they’ll now turn their attention to a giant oak, down Feather River Boulevard from the cemetery.

“My son refused to go to school today—he wanted to be here,” Andrea Torres said last Thursday (Feb. 5), the day Pacific Gas & Electric Co. revved up the chainsaws to fell the nine trees that remained at the cemetery. She was one of at least a dozen protesters who, in refusing to leave the trees, were removed by police in handcuffs. “They were here before PG&E put in their pipeline. None of us is ever going to see a tree get that old in our lifetime.”

The cemetery trees were among more than 200 in Oroville—including that oak—slated for removal as part of PG&E’s Pipeline Pathways project because they stood too close to underground gas lines, which PG&E has deemed a safety risk.

“They’ve cut every tree in Oroville. I have the final tree,” said Bert King, whose business, A.M. King Industries, is just south of the Oroville Cemetery. “That tree is almost 200 years old. I had an arborist who came and measured it.”

King contends that the oak is “right square on my property line.”

PG&E, however, maintains it’s on city land, but the city is still looking into the matter. “We believe it is in our public right of way, but we’re in the process of validating that,” said Rick Walls, city engineer.

“They’re really kind of bullies,” King said of PG&E. When a representative came to alert him to the impending removal of the oak, an issue was brought up about the parking structure that sits partially underneath its branches. “They told me I’d have to take the building down because they were afraid they’d damage it. I said, ‘No way.’”

King’s been active, albeit mostly behind the scenes, with Save Oroville Trees. And he’s not going to let that oak go without a fight.

“I have this great machine in my yard—it’s a big crane. We have lots of people who are willing to sit up there,” he said.

There’s no denying the passion and

determination of the Save Oroville Trees members. But some of the information about the Pipeline Pathways project and the city of Oroville’s involvement have been

misconstrued, argues City Administrator Randy Murphy.

For one, SOT is calling for a recall of several City Council members, arguing they hastily approved the project and should have put up more of a fight as councils in other cities, particularly in the East Bay, have done.

“The council in October did not approve the project,” Murphy clarified. “They approved an agreement for PG&E to reimburse the city for the 240-odd trees that they were removing. It was an agreement that I helped negotiate.”

The permitting process was not one that required council approval, he said. And while SOT requested the council rescind that permit— which is within its power—it would not have benefited the city to do so. Language in the permit indemnifies the city for any legal costs linked to the tree removal, Murphy said, and with the city already in court over the matter— SOT sued to stop the cutting and PG&E sued to call off the protesters—it might have been costly to rescind the permit.

“Then we would have had PG&E suing the city over breach of contract,” he added.

Another thing many people don’t realize, Murphy said, is that when PG&E approached him late last summer with a list of trees to cut, about half of them were already slated for removal by the city. They were diseased or causing damage to sidewalks and gutters.

“Their proposal to remove those trees saved the city in the neighborhood of $100,000. And they also provided replacement trees,” Murphy said. He added that “the sycamores [at the cemetery] were not among those trees. They weren’t damaging anything, so they were fine in that respect.”

Which is exactly what got SOT members so worked up in the first place.

Their feelings could be summed up by 7-year-old Jaius Thomas, Torres’ son: “The trees are our family—we need to respect them.”

THE PULSE NO MORE SPACE

The volunteers with Safe Space, the seasonal, cold-weather homeless shelter hosted at rotating locations, thought they had closed doors for the winter on Feb. 1. But heavy wind and rain prompted the shelter to open for one more night on Sunday (Feb 8).

Cynthia Gailey, who coordinated the shelters on behalf of the Chico Housing Action Team, said the group had hoped to keep the shelters open at least through February, but ran out of facilities willing to host. (On Sunday, Safe Space used the Chico Grange Hall as a makeshift shelter.)

Gailey said Safe Space provided shelter for 51 nights this season, compared with 15 a year ago when the program first started. She said the shelter housed 210 individuals this year, and an average of 50 people showed up each night in the final weeks.

She also observed more people over the age of 30 making use of the service, as well as more homeless women, though CHAT is still crunching demographic numbers.

BETTER BREAST CARE

Renovation construction has begun to transform North State Radiology’s medical building, across The Esplanade from Enloe Medical Center, into a cutting-edge breast cancer center.

The Chico Breast Care Center will combine three separate services—North State Imaging, Enloe Comprehensive Breast Care and the Breast Care Center of Northern California—“into one fully integrated, state-of-the-art facility,” according to a press release from North State Radiology. The center will offer, among other services, 3-D mammography, a diagnostic tool that may better detect invasive tumors and avoid false alarms than traditional screening methods, according to WebMD.com.

The center is scheduled to open this summer.

LAWMAKERS ACTING ON VACCINATION

In light of the measles outbreak that began in California, state lawmakers are considering tightening the requirements for vaccination exemptions—or eliminating the law altogether.

California is one of 19 states that allow parents to opt out of vaccinating their schoolchildren through a personal belief exemption, according to NPR.org. But the measles outbreak that began in December at the Disneyland amusement park in Anaheim prompted state Sens. Richard Pan (pictured) and Ben Allen to introduce legislation on Feb. 4 that would require all children to be fully vaccinated before attending school.

Additionally, U.S. Sens.

Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein recently sent a letter to California Health and Human Services Secretary Diana Dooley that reads, “We believe there should be no such thing as a philosophical or personal belief exemption, since everyone uses public spaces.”

Meanwhile, Gov. Jerry Brown has indicated a willingness to consider legislation that would eliminate all but medical waivers, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Is rice safe to eat?

hat would you do if, after many years of W building a company, you learned that, through no fault of your own, your prod-

ucts contained potentially dangerous levels of a notorious poison?

That’s exactly what happened to American rice growers beginning in 2012, when reports surfaced in the media that rice contained worrisome levels of arsenic. The grain, it turns out, is uniquely efficient at pulling naturally occurring arsenic out of the soil and absorbing it—up to 10 times as efficient as, say, wheat.

This raised further questions: How should consumers respond to this new information? Should they continue eating rice as usual, stop eating it, or eat less? Are some rice products—baby cereal, for example—more dangerous than others?

These are not questions rice farmers can answer. “We’re not scientists,” Grant Lundberg, chief executive officer of Richvale-based Lundberg Family Farms, said in a phone interview. “We depend on researchers in universities and the government” to understand the issue and come up with standards and recommendations, he explained.

It’s complicated. Rice is a staple in the diet of half the world’s people, and it’s grown on hundreds of thousands of rice farms. The amount of arsenic in the soil varies from region to region. Even if consistent regulations were in place, monitoring production and enforcing those regulations would be difficult, if not impossible.

Not only that, so far the experts don’t agree on how much arsenic people can safely consume. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency holds that any dose of arsenic carries a cancer risk. Consumer Reports, which has studied the issue and done its own testing, recommends no more than 120 parts per billion in rice and rice products. Codex Alimentarius, a body that

develops international food standards for the United Nations and the World Health Organization, has proposed a maximum level of 200 ppb specifically in white (or polished) rice.

Right now the rice industry is anticipating a long-awaited risk assessment and set of recommendations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that should provide consumers with definitive guidance on how much rice can be ingested safely.

Nobody seems to know when the FDA’s

report will be released, however.

In the meantime, industry spokespeople are insisting that rice remains a healthful and nutritious food, especially when eaten as part of a balanced diet that includes other grains.

be safe for consumption across the population. Diets that follow the AAP guidelines include a variety of foods and a variety of grains and remain a healthful approach to eating for children and adolescents.”

For their part, the folks at Lundberg, the nation’s largest producer of organic rice and rice products, decided early on that they wanted to get out in front of the arsenic issue.

“Since this bubbled up in 2012,” Grant Lundberg said, “we’ve been committed to staying on the issue. ...

This comes from our principles as a company. We believe consumers have a right to know what’s in their food. We take that seriously.”

Wanting to create a three-year baseline for monitoring arsenic levels, Lundberg Family Farms tested its rice and rice products for arsenic in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and posted the results on its website, which also includes succinct but useful explanations of the issues surrounding arsenic in rice.

In its testing, the company determined that the average amount of arsenic in its products was 92 parts per billion, below the Consumer Reports threshold and well below the 200 ppb level set by Codex. This figure is doubly significant because the company tested only brown rice, whose arsenic levels tend to be higher than those of white rice.

“We just put the data out there so our consumers can make more informed choices,” Lundberg said. Ω

As Brandon Harder, the director of governmental affairs and communication at Farmers’ Rice, put it during a phone interview, “I’ve been working here a little over a year, and you’re the first person who has asked about it.”

Harder told me to call Jim Morris, the communications manager for the California Rice Commission. Morris was eager to help but couldn’t tell me much. “We have no scientists on staff,” he said, echoing Lundberg. Like others in the industry, the CRC is waiting for the FDA’s risk assessment.

“We want to be able to address customers’ concerns, and we support the FDA’s research,” Morris said. “We’re very comfortable that rice is safe.”

Morris referred me to the USA Rice Federation, which operates a website called Arsenic Facts. It notes that, according to a September 2013 report, FDA scientists have “determined that the amount of detectable arsenic is too low in the rice and rice product samples to cause any immediate or short-term adverse health effects.”

Also weighing in on the website is Dr. Stephen R. Daniels, chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Nutrition. “These FDA data are reassuring,” he writes. “While there is inorganic arsenic in rice and rice products, it is at a level that should

Chico State, the seed for her new book, Phylogeography of California: An Introduction, got planted nearly 12 years ago while she was in, of all places, France.

In 2003, Schierenbeck (pronounced SHEER-en-beck) spent time with a colleague at the University of Rennes, professor Lily Ainouche, who was interested in the biodiversity of California as part of her broader research on invasive species. An idea sparked: Schierenbeck would write an overview explaining how various forms of plant and animal life came to—and evolved in—the Golden State.

The teaching load at Chico State prevented her from doing much work on the book for nearly a decade. When she took a sabbatical, though, she wrote intensively from spring through summer and submitted her manuscript to UC Press, which released the 368-page hardcover last year.

Phylogeography of California has received a positive response from experts in the field, including the scientist who pioneered phylogeography. John Avise—now a professor at UC Irvine but at the University of Georgia when he invented the term (referring to the spread of species)—praises Schierenbeck’s tome as “a real tour de force in the amount of information it contains.”

Avise told the CN&R that her work provides “a deep history” of California’s natural environment.

“The comprehensive nature of this treatment is really what impresses me about it,” he said. “It covers all the major organismal groups, both plants and animals, and integrates it with the geologic and climatic regimes of the state. So it was a real pleasure for me to see this book.”

Since Avise is one of Schierenbeck’s inspirations, his review was a pleasure for her.

Schierenbeck synthesized an array of

research—some hers, much from others— to create her account of California’s living history. The gaze isn’t just retrospective, though; she hopes to impart a forwardthinking message as well.

“California is one of the 25 hotspots of biological diversity on the planet, which is something I think we should be very proud to steward,” she said in a recent phone interview. “Of course, California is also this incredibly beautiful place where people want to live, so with this beautiful biodiversity and this beautiful state we have the added problem of human-population expansion—and I am seriously concerned about climate change and how it will affect the species that really are very recent in evolutionary time.”

Last year set records for hot weather.

If temperatures remain on an upward trajectory at a rate faster than lifeforms— particularly plants—can migrate, “we don’t

know how different species will respond; we simply don’t have enough data,” Schierenbeck said.

“To me, it’s quite frightening,” she continued. “We stand to lose, depending on which group of organisms you’re talking about, 30 percent of our diversity within the next few decades.”

Of the 6,000 plant species in California, 4,800 are native and 1,800 are only found here. Eighteen-hundred is also the approximate number threatened with extinction by climate change, which will have a ripple effect through the ecosystem already suffering impacts.

“We can make similar predictions about other organisms,” she said, citing amphibians and fish as just two examples.

Schierenbeck sees a clear delineation between the historical record and current events.

“I think what people really overlook or don’t understand about evolution so much is the kind of changes that I’m talking about [in the book] occur over millions and millions of years,” she said, “and yet the kind of changes we’re talking about today [relating to climate change] occur over decades. We are currently, in the world, in a catastrophic extinction … truly the greatest extinction in the history of our planet, caused by one species.

“People are not as concerned as they should be.”

Schierenbeck in writing the book. She includes recommendations for conservation; however, she says, “mostly I want people to appreciate the diversity we have here and understand it needs protecting.”

Even though climate change is

happening rapidly—perhaps too rapidly to offset all of the damage—she firmly believes any action trumps inaction.

Schierenbeck practices what she teaches at her Chico home in the Avenues. The quarter-acre property has no lawn; instead, she has wide planter strips of native plants, 15 fruit trees and 12 raised beds for fruits and vegetables.

“Whether you have a yard the size of a postage stamp or a hundred acres, if you’re not growing food, grow native plants,” she said.

Her landscaping includes purple needle grass, penstemons, milkweed, poppies, California lilacs and manzanitas. She made some of these choices to support pollinating insects, which is a prime concern in an agricultural area such as Butte County. Her household also composts. “‘Stop putting your head in the sand— care about other species’ I guess is my message,” she said. “I think people don’t feel climate change personally enough; I don’t think it’s that they don’t care, they just don’t feel it personally enough, and I don’t know what we can do to change that.

“Maybe it won’t change until the fluctuations in the weather patterns are so extreme and so devastating that people can’t ignore it any further.” □

The keys to my heart

Prime-time talent A Biggs native, Oscar Magaña Jr. has been an actor in Hollywood for the last four years. He has an idea to bring what he’s learned to the North State, using local talent to produce a TV pilot or movie here. “I want to bring my technical knowhow here. We have the talent in Chico to make it happen.” Magaña, 35, is the son of migrant farm workers. He grew up in Biggs, graduating from Biggs High School and moving on to study agricultural engineering at Chico State before working for a time in local agriculture. He earned an associate’s degree at Butte College in psychology and theater arts.

Locally, the 6-foot-2 singer/actor/ dancer had roles in the rock musical Rent at Butte College, and as the lead heartthrob in the musical comedy Bye Bye Birdie at Chico Theater Company. Since moving to Hollywood, he has appeared on all three incarnations of CSI, on Blood Relative, as well as children’s shows on Nickelodeon. He’s also a VFX (visual effects artist) who’s fluent in Spanish. Magaña is currently spending time in Chico to be near family. In April he returns to Southern California to film a movie, costarring alongside Martin Lawrence. Two Faces of Colin is scheduled for release in 2016, and Magaña is already learning his lines as Detective Perez.

Who have been your role models?

I’m grateful to many people who cultivated—and tolerated—my ambition. As a child, Sue Ruttenberg directed me in The Wizard of

Oz in Biggs. I was the Cowardly Lion, in fourth grade. I got into sports, which is not an artistic endeavor, but coaches take you under their wings. Also, Barry Piccinino [Butte College Theater Arts] and Marc Edson [at Chico Theater Company].

Describe this idea to film a production in Chico.

I’d love to do a project, to produce a short film, using local actors here in Chico. My idea is to do a comedy about a group of people trying to make a movie in Chico, featuring local talent and places.

I’d like to do something that would highlight myself—as a local artist—for the big industry, but also to showcase Butte County and the great city of Chico. Other movies take place in other towns, so if we want to film in Chico, there’s no reason we can’t. I’d like

to show the world … we know Chico can party, but we can also make movies, too. I want everyone to be a part of it. I can think of a half dozen people off the top of my head who could be in it. It is doable. But I can’t do it on my own.

Do you have any advice for aspiring actors?

If asked to rattle off a list of my favorite edible things, chocolate would probably fall right under cheese and just above wine. (So if anyone wants to get me something for Valentine’s Day, I just made it easy for ya.)

But chocolate is so cliché, you might say. I would reply: Not if you do it right. The big heart box of chocolates filled with assorted flavors? Cliché.

We all know there are always a few really good ones in there right next to a few real stinkers. But if you know your sweetie loves truffles, get her truffles. If you know she has a weakness for dark chocolate and caramel, by golly go get her some. That’s not cliché—that’s love.

But what about the little guy, I thought. There must be someone doing something with chocolate on a smaller scale. It didn’t take long to find one.

Antony Tickle has been making toffee in Paradise for 13 years. A baker for more than three decades, he took a stab at the café business in the early ’90s, opening up the Broadway Café in downtown Chico. The market was competitive, though, and after a few years he shut the doors.

In 2002, a second burst of entrepreneurial inspiration struck one day while Tickle was reading the classic French cookbook Larousse Gastronomique. He came upon a recipe for brittle, and after completing it, he found it was actually much more like toffee.

“I took it on a camping trip up to Happy Camp,” Tickle told me. “Everyone went hog wild over it—they started stealing it and hiding it. That inspired me—I used that trip to get the name Happy Campers’ Candy.”

Tickle, who works full time as a baker for the Chico Unified School District, now has about 15 varieties of toffee. The one I bought—at S&S Organic Produce and Natural Foods—that prompted me to call Tickle up was the English Toffee. Wow. Sweet, crunchy toffee, covered with dark chocolate (is there any other kind?) and almonds. Simple but perfect. I can see how Happy Campers’ Candy has stuck around as long as it has.

There have been some bumps, however. During the Great Recession, Tickle said he was forced to branch out. Where he used to be able to make $1,000 during a day-long festival, he was earning $250. That’s where his granola line comes in. His most popular variety is the apples and almond butter mixture, but he’s had great success with his pumpkin cranberry granola (using pumpkin puree) and the Autumn Crave, with dried apples, golden raisins and pumpkin seeds.

In the next year or so, Tickle hopes to turn his side business into a full-time venture. In the meantime, find his delicious treats at most local festivals, including the Saturday farmers’ market in downtown Chico, and local stores including S&S, Maisie Jane’s and Made in Chico.

Shining a spotlight on the bands that will be packing Chico venues in 2015

I

f there is any question as to whether Chico has as big and eclectic of a music scene as it often boasts, we should find our answer this April. In addition to the 10th anniversary of the CN&R’s Chico Area Music Awards celebration happening that month, there is the huge matter of the month-long attempt to break the Guinness world record for longest continuous concert at the Tackle Box Bar and Grill. See the piece in this feature package to learn more about the ambitious music freaks behind the effort.

And to get you in the mood for that huge feast, we chose four local bands to highlight this year: two brand-new garage-rock beasts that have come roaring out of the gates, a roaring frontwoman whose band is tearing up the road, and the antiroar of a harmonizing crew of Chico dudes.

Where metal meets the road Dr. Luna For a lot of local musicians, playing in bands with your friends at shows in front of other bands filled with your friends is a mark of ultimate success. Chico’s scene is a warm, fun place, and if that’s as high as your musical aspirations go (and you have another job that pays the bills) it’s a pretty happy place.

But for a handful of Chico bands—like the hard rockers of Dr. Luna—their happy place, and the only place to make a living as a band that plays original music, is on the road. “You can succeed very well off the same 100 people for a good two years,” said frontwoman Rachelle DeBelle, “and then it will die, like it has for hundreds of bands that started and ended here.”

Thanks in large part to the efforts of the tireless DeBelle, who does much of the band’s booking (while simultaneously promoting shows from California to Washington with her DeBelle Productions), Dr. Luna’s schedule has them playing the bulk of their gigs outside of Chico, and they have a growing following that stretches from Nor Cal to Seattle to show for it.

“We do have a mission. We have a certain level of success we are expecting to achieve with putting in our work and our time and our money,” DeBelle added. “And I know a few of us have dedicated our 18

other careers to making sure this is possible—working our lives around it. Because it is what we do for a living.”

DeBelle started Dr. Luna and the Straight Jackets way back in 2004 as a punk band at Butte College.

The band shut down after a few house parties until 2010, when DeBelle switched it to a solo project and was soon asked to open a tour for Portland band Floater before gradually adding (and sometimes subtracting) players over the years and settling on the name Dr. Luna and the current five-piece format, which features drummer Donovan Campbell, guitarists Enoch Narayan Marsh and Gray Harris, and bassist Eric Thompson.

“We all have such similar musical tastes,” DeBelle explained about the current lineup. She and Campbell cited the notorious Brooklyn goth-metal crew Type O Negative as a common influence.

“We’re actually all metalheads,” said Campbell. “It’s funny, because when we write, we don’t necessarily write with that mentality. A lot of times we’re really writing to Rachelle’s strengths. She has a really unique voice, and so we’re really trying to find a good style of music to complement it. Often times, hard, aggressive metal isn’t the way to do that.”

As a group, they mix that Type O-style darkness and hefty crunch with DeBelle’s huge, somewhat soulful voice, into their

own energetic brand of in-your-face hard rock.

The band is currently putting the finishing touches on Rude Awakening, their third album (recorded at Heirloom Studios with local engineer/musician Dave Elke) and second release in less than a year. After its digital release on Feb. 13, and a handful of shows in the west (including a spot with L.A. nu-metal heavyweights OTEP at Reno’s Knitting Factory), there will be a CD-release party at LaSalles on March 13, followed by a 12-date West Coast tour.

“This year, [our goal] is regional success. We’d like to have a four state gap where we can comfortably play and expect a guarantee and a draw at every place we play. And we are 70 percent of the way there right now,” DeBelle said, adding that this year the band will have played 25 shows in four different states by April 1.

“We’ve had successful moments throughout the last couple years with Dr. Luna, but we had them in much smaller doses,” DeBelle said. “Now it’s consistent.

Every show we get is that exciting.”

Rock on the wild side Trox and the Terribles “I think I’m a really nice guy most of the time,” Trenton “Trox” Burnham said recently over a cocktail on the patio of the Maltese Bar and Tap Room, and it’s likely the others present—his wife, Christina (of local band The She Things), and Trox and the Terribles bandmate Elliot Maldonado— would attest to his generally mild-mannered and congenial character.

“So this is like an alternate personality of mine and I get to express myself in ways

I might not normally do.

Burnham was speaking of his stage persona Trox Von Ulch, who, sometimes wearing a gimp bondage mask, has been letting his smuttier side stand front and center since early last year, when Trox and the Terribles formed.

“Sometimes people can walk all over you,” he continued, “so you have to have that other side that can call people on their bullshit. [As Trox], I get to be a dick.”

With Trox and the Terribles, vocalist/ guitarist Burnham continues to pound out primitive rock akin to what he did in the now-defunct Hasta la Pizzas (formerly The Hambones), albeit with less pop flavoring and more pure grit. “We shoot for super raw, straight-ahead rock ’n’ roll,” Burnham said, citing classics The Stooges and contemporaries Nobunny as inspiration.

In order to create the perfect cacophony to back Trox’s straight-from-the-id lyrics, Burnham recruited bassist Maldonado, drummer Max Joy and guitarist Cale Hamm because of his respect for their other projects: Master Lady (Maldonado) and Skull Kids (Joy and Ham). So far, the band’s high-energy and raucous interpretation of “terrible” has gone over well with most live audiences. Mostly.

“We played a wedding once—that was awful,” Maldonado said. “It was probably the worst show I’d ever played, in this band or any other, but I still had a great time.”

“I think some people enjoyed it, but it was a little, uh, out of place for a wedding,” Burnham said.

“Anyone can go online and listen to songs, but I really want people to come out to shows and feel engaged and involved,” he said. “When you see it live, everyone has a better time and appreciates the whole experience more.”

The band recorded seven songs and a video with Butte College recording arts students, the audio portion of which is posted on the band’s Bandcamp page under the lovely title “Raw From Butt College.”

They also recently recorded with Scott Barwick at Origami Recording Lounge to release a tape as part of Barwick’s latest endeavor, Crystal Flower Cassettes.

Burnham and Maldonado said Trox and the Terribles’ next show likely will be the cassette release party, with just some minor studio tweaks and artwork pending.

it came from the rock swamp The She Things Since playing their first show in October of last year, The She Things have captured audiences’ imaginations in Chico. That performance was rock ’n’ roll power, kitschy spectacle and, even more important, a bold mission statement.

The trio—bassist-vocalist Kerra Jessen, guitarist Christina Burnham and drummer Chelsea Tucker—are doing what seems to come naturally, bashing out Ramonesinspired punk jams and having a debauched good time while doing it. Jessen, whom

many know from her time in several local bands, including The Persian Skirts and longstanding garage rockabillists The Shankers, says The She Things have helped the members tap into their inner Hydes.

It’s exciting,” Jessen said, pointing to bands like The Mummies and The Cramps as visual inspiration. “Not to be cliché, but we’re girls and we like to dress up. It turns you into a different person.”

In a town where everybody knows everybody, and bands are often just your pals on stage, The She Things have been able to create a bit of distance—even if only for the 30 minutes they’re performing.

Their live debut included a glowing red pentagram backdrop, and the members donned black veil-like masks. While the band has helped the members unleash their unfiltered personalities, Jessen says it’s also played a big part in getting her through a difficult time in her personal life.

“It pushed me out of complacency,” she explained. “I always want to be doing something musically, whether I’m balling my eyes out or laughing with friends. This band has been integral in this process.”

Mind you, though they seem to have tapped a nerve with locals starved for spectacle, The She Things have only been around a few months, and Burnham (who played drums in The Shankers and bass

in The Hambones) is still making the transition to guitar while Tucker is playing drums for the first time. They don’t even have an official recording yet—practice recordings are the only sonic documentation you’ll currently find. The music plays to the members’ love for ’70s punk and sock-hoppin’ garage rock. And songs like “Pussy Stomp” and “Hymen Again” put an exclamation point on the band’s playful, we-ain’t-fuckin’-around feminist message.

It seems reasonable that the best is yet to come. And these three women have lofty goals for The She Things. They’ll be recording a demo soon, with the intention of shopping it around to labels. More shows should follow; tours, too.

“We love Chico, and we love the reception,” Jessen said. “But we want to broaden our scope and our focus beyond Chico.”

The focus right now is feeling good about being a woman, and exploring the power of rock ’n’ roll. It’s good for you.

It’s good for Chico. And it’s great for The She Things.

Chico’s soul The Mondegreens Since forming in 2012, The Mondegreens have pursued specific goals for playing music in Chico, some of which they’ve yet to realize—such as, playing the Sierra Nevada Big Room, or sharing a bill with The Mother Hips.

But they’ve crossed plenty more items off the list, including playing alongside local musicians they’ve long looked up to.

“The Shimmies, Surrogate, Pat Hull— those are not just our favorite Chico bands, but some of our favorite bands of all time,” said bassist David Friedlander.

Whom they admire reflects who they are as a band. The trio, made up of local guys—Friedlander, Russell Rabut (acoustic guitar) and Jack Knight (electric guitar)— played in bands together while attending Chico High School. Now, they specialize in rootsy indie rock that doesn’t quite twang enough to be categorized as full-on country.

As all three members have performed as solo singer-songwriters—they share vocal duties—there’s an emphasis on lyrics and vocal harmonies.

Before last summer, The Mondegreens were only able to record and perform intermittently because they were attending separate West Coast universities—Knight at Chico State, Friedlander at University of Oregon, and Rabut at San Diego State.

They toured during breaks from school, and released a three-song EP, El Avance, last July. After earning their college diplomas last spring, they agreed to put their respective nonmusical careers on hold in order to pursue music full time.

As Rabut put it: “There’s nothing we’d rather be doing than this.”

Of course, getting serious about music involves logistical stuff, like purchasing a heavy-duty van for touring. (They’ll be 20

able to do so thanks to the $5,500 they raised with a recent Kickstarter campaign.)

It’s also meant spending serious time in the studio. The Mondegreens’ forthcoming album, Kid Tell Time, set for release March 6, is a Chico creation through and through.

It was recorded and engineered by Scott Barwick of Origami Recording Lounge; mixed by Chris Keene, frontman of local indie-rock band Surrogate; and features collaborations with Sean Galloway of Ave Grave and The Shimmies. In terms of musical direction, the album has higher ambitions than their previous release, Rabut said.

“We were reserved, marginalized by our minimal means with [El Avance],” he said. “As we’ve grown, we’ve gotten more brazen in our songwriting, more open to trying new things.”

The effort is also more polished than their previous recording.

“This will be the first time we’ll hand somebody an album and not have to qualify it with, ‘this was recorded in my mom’s living room,’” Friedlander laughed.

The band plans to graduate from the Chico music scene this spring and will relocate to Seattle in May, hoping to test itself in a bigger pond. But that won’t preclude them from returning to Chico (and maybe playing the Big Room someday).

“No matter if the move to Seattle proves to be semi-permanent, or we move somewhere else, Chico will always be our common thread,” Friedlander said.

Last October, musicians flocked from all over the world to perform at Rí Rá, an Irish pub in Las Vegas, where, over the course of 372 consecutive hours (and 10 minutes), they set the current Guinness world record for the longest multi-artist concert event.

But this April, a couple of Chicoans will oversee an attempt to break that record, and they’re not just hoping to tack on a few more hours—they’re doubling it.

Local musicians Julian Ruck and Jeff Fox are organizing the event, hoping to create a 720-hour musical marathon at Chico’s Tackle Box Bar and Grill.

Dozens—potentially hundreds—of bands will be there, alternating sets for an entire month, 24/7, with only five minutes allowed between performances.

For Ruck—longtime musician (formerly of Soul Butter) and current member of singer-songwriter supergroup Electric Canyon Convergence—the ambitious project stemmed from a desire to firmly put Chico’s music scene on the map. “A lot of performers and musicians have to leave Chico to get recognized and compensated,” he said. “So I wondered, how can we draw the attention here? [Beating the world record] was one of the many random ideas I think of in a day, and it went from there.”

Since October, Ruck’s been in communication with Guinness World Records officials, outlining regulations necessary for meeting—and beating—the current title.

And there’s quite a bit to be done.

“We don’t want any gray areas when it comes to Guinness’ regulations. There is no prerecorded music allowed, no DJs, and all acts need to be rehearsed and concertproficient,” he explained. Of course, “concert-proficient” is a subjective term.

“That’s why we always need two witnesses in the audience, convinced that what they’re hearing is a real song,” Ruck said. They also need 10 audience members at all times, and, of course, lots of bands.

“We have about 20 percent of the 720 hours booked so far,” he said, including local favorites like Furlough Fridays, Bogg and Dylan’s Dharma, with a large number of new and up-and-coming bands, plus a handful from outside Chico, including the Bay Area.

With the gig fast approaching, 35-yearold Ruck

has been spending countless hours organizing what’s become the biggest project of his life. When asked if he’ll be living at the Tackle Box come April, he laughed. “Yep, basically.”

But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The traditionally country-style bar, with the slogan “food.beer.guns,” has formed an unlikely bond with the Chico music scene in recent years, hosting a variety of bands weekly. “They just got a new dance floor and stage. And owner Richard Peeples has been 100 percent behind us with this project,” Ruck said.

With no online campaign fundraisers in the works, Ruck is hoping to find local sponsors to help fund the event, provide equipment, or just show up and “offer some woohoos!” from the crowd.

“The whole thing has to be documented on film for Guinness anyway,” he said, “so we’re adding a few more of our own Julian Ruck (left) and Tackle Box owner Richard Peeples stand atop the venue’s newly constructed stage where local musicians—including Ruck’s co-organizer Jeff Fox (aka Fox E. As if putting on the event won’t keep them busy enough, Ruck and Fox plan to contribute their own musical talents during the month-long event, including a 12-hour set for Ruck. But in general, he said, he prefers to be the guy behind the curtain.

“Jeff and I are just providing a perspective to what’s already here. We couldn’t do this if Chico weren’t awesome. I think [this event] will draw together musicians who are willing to work together, not as much for their individual music, but for the scene.”

[Beating the world record] was one of the many random ideas I think of in a day, and it went from there.”

Since October, Ruck’s been in communication with Guinness World Records officials, outlining regulations necessary for meeting—and beating—the current title.

And there’s quite a bit to be done.

“We don’t want any gray areas when it comes to Guinness’ regulations. There is no prerecorded music allowed, no DJs, and all acts need to be rehearsed and concertproficient,” he explained. Of course, “concert-proficient” is a subjective term.

“That’s why we always need two witnesses in the audience, convinced that what they’re hearing is a real song,” Ruck said. They also need 10 audience members at all times, and, of course, lots of bands.

“We have about 20 percent of the 720 hours booked so far,” he said, including local favorites like Furlough Fridays, Bogg and Dylan’s Dharma, with a large number of new and up-and-coming bands, plus a handful from outside Chico, including the Bay Area.

With the gig fast approaching, 35-yearold Ruck

has been spending countless hours organizing what’s become the biggest project of his life. When asked if he’ll be living at the Tackle Box come April, he laughed. “Yep, basically.”

But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The traditionally country-style bar, with the slogan “food.beer.guns,” has formed an unlikely bond with the Chico music scene in recent years, hosting a variety of bands weekly. “They just got a new dance floor and stage. And owner Richard Peeples has been 100 percent behind us with this project,” Ruck said.

With no online campaign fundraisers in the works, Ruck is hoping to find local sponsors to help fund the event, provide equipment, or just show up and “offer some woohoos!” from the crowd.

cameras to turn it into a documentary and hopefully sell it to Netflix.”

As if putting on the event won’t keep them busy enough, Ruck and Fox plan to contribute their own musical talents during the month-long event, including a 12-hour set for Ruck. But in general, he said, he prefers to be the guy behind the curtain.

“Jeff and I are just providing a perspective to what’s already here. We couldn’t do this if Chico weren’t awesome. I think [this event] will draw together musicians who are willing to work together, not as much for their individual music, but for the scene.”

CN&R: The band bio lists a lot of musical influences, and your videos show some interesting instruments—that double-neck guitar-thing in particular. Do you collect instruments in your travels, have them custom built, or do you seek out vintage instruments that are particularly suited to producing sounds that reflect those influences?

Ethan Holtzman: Mel Bergmann custom built the [double-neck] Mastadong for Zac. It’s half Fender Jazzmaster and half chapai dong veng—a traditional Khmer stringed instrument. It sort of symbolizes a mesh of musical cultures between East and West. In Cambodia we have gotten some nice chimes, bells and bamboo flutes that we use in the studio. We own lots of vintage instruments. Playing keys for

Dengue, I have a few Farfisa compact organs made in Italy in the ’60s. Our studio is crammed with everything from a Bulgarian button accordion, to a ’70s Big Stud bass, and ’60s Rogers drums. Ralicke’s horn is worth more than most people’s car. We all collect and collaborate.

While watching the “Girl From the North” promo video, I was struck by your process of writing the songs’ lyrics in English and then translating them into the Cambodian language of Khmer using dictionaries. Does Chhom Nimol also write some of the lyrics and help in the translation process?

Yes, Nimol writes some of the lyrics in Khmer, and she helps out with the translation process. The hardest part with direct translations from English to Khmer is the amount of syllables. We often have to take the idea in English and strip it way down so just the most important words are left, getting the point across as poetically as possible.

What is the motivation for presenting many of the lyrics in a language that a majority of your audience won’t understand?

When we started the band, we covered songs from Cambodian artists that recorded in the late ’60s and early ’70s. We used that body of work as our springboard, and from there we started writing our own original music. We use Nimol’s voice just like one of our instruments. Hearing her sing naturally in her native tongue is a powerful force that we utilize as a part of our sound.

Any memorable audience reactions?

Yeah, there have been some special moments.

One time a Cambodian grandmother got up on stage with us at a rock club in DC and sang a song. Another time in SF, a bunch of dudes started a break dance pit. Sometimes toward the end of our set, if there are Cambodians who want to jump up and dance or sing with us, we encourage it.

The Chico Women’s Club is a great old woodenfloored community hall—should people put on their dancing shoes in preparation for seeing Dengue Fever?

Yeah, for sure! Have them put on their dancing shoes and prepare to splinter the wood! It’s gonna be fun! We’ve never played a Women’s Club before. Ω

So of course Henri was thrilled to learn that the renowned poet, food writer and UC Davis professor Sandra Gilbert would be coming to Chico Feb. 19 as part of the Chico State Humanities Center’s year-long Food and Culture series.

Professor Gilbert has published eight collections of poetry, most recently Aftermath (2011), as well as four prose books including her latest, The Culinary Imagination: From Myth to Modernity (2014), the work from which her Chico talk will be drawn.

Henri Bourride: How did you first get interested in food as an area of academic study?

Sandra Gilbert: My ethnic heritage is very complicated and delicious. My paternal grandparents were French/Italian and Russian. Grandpa ran a restaurant in the market district in New York and was a fabulous cook. My mother’s family was 100 percent Sicilian, so we ate deep-dish Sicilian pizza, lasagna and those glorious golden rice balls called arancini.

A poet friend and I put together an anthology of food poems decades ago, and now the enterprise has born fruit not only in my recent book on the culinary imagination, but also in a collection of food writing that I’ve co-edited called Eating Words, due out this fall.

Have you encountered any obstacles in treating food as a serious area of scholarship?

Thirty years ago, when we tried to publish our anthology, there wasn’t a lot of interest, but in the last few years I haven’t encountered any obstacles at all.

Everyone seems to be hungry for writing about food.

In academia, “food studies” is a flourishing field.

You’re a poet, critic, feminist and food writer.

Can you talk about where those different “selves” intersect and the degree, if any, to which they’re at odds with each other?

As a poet, I’ve been nurtured by the writing and thinking I’ve discovered as a critic and a feminist. I’ve always also felt that my range of vision was broadened and deepened once I began to meditate on what it meant to me to grow up as a woman in a culture where stereotypes of “femininity” had very specific problems and (for that matter) possibilities. As for food writing—I’m actually a writer about food writing, which seems to have evolved inevitably out of my other careers.

You’ve been invited to a dinner party. You are to bring one of your favorite dishes to share, one of your favorite books to exchange, and one of your favorite poems to read. What would you bring?

For a main course, I’d bring a turkey stuffed with my Ligurian grandpa’s famous stuffing.

For a book, I’d bring M. F. K. Fisher’s The Gastronomical Me, one of the earliest works in a genre that’s come to be called “foodoir.”

And I’d bring Wallace Stevens’ “The Emperor of Ice Cream,” an elegy for a nameless woman that also, amazingly, incorporates a discussion of ice-cream making.

Your talk is titled “The Poetics of Ice Cream.”

Can you provide a preview?

I will read and discuss “The Emperor of Ice-Cream” and a few other recipe poems. I might also read and discuss one of my own political/culinary poems, a piece called “Mafioso” that was probably my first “real” poem.

Christina Nichol Overlook Press Waiting for the Electricity, the first novel by American writer Christina Nichol, provides a glimpse of traditional culture in post-Soviet Georgia during moments of hilarious juxtaposition with modernity every time the lights come on, which is only a few hours each day. Nichol’s protagonist, Slims Achmed Makashvili, and his family must plan their lives around the daily allotment of electricity their impoverished village receives, and the power becomes a metaphor for independence from the large industrialized nations and their oil interests, to whom Georgia is fatefully tied. Not since the title character of Saul Bellow’s epistolary novel Herzog (1964) have I encountered one as outlandish as Slims, a working-class Georgian who writes to Hillary Clinton seeking America’s help in stabilizing his country.

While written in a satirical style, Waiting is heart-achingly poignant in its characters’ struggles for basic human needs: electricity to heat their homes, for bathing and cooking, and gasoline for a generator and a barely operable car. Nichol, a Bay Area native who taught English in Georgia, possesses an intimate understanding of the irony and the dilemma here—a country’s modest desires weighed against the relative luxury and material excess of the wealthy industrialized nations that prosper at the cost of Georgia’s natural resources.

Recently, however, it seems as if WWE has taken a page from the Mighty Marvel Marketing department and branded its image anywhere there’s space. From flipping off the cable company with the streaming WWE Network, to a Scooby-Doo movie and Slam City cartoons and toys, WWE is a top contender for brand-saturation champion. Its newest venture is a Mortal Kombat-esque mobile game, WWE Immortals. Turns out there are multiple universes and the Superstars and Divas are great warriors in all of them, so when worlds collide battles ensue. The simple premise perfectly utilizes the diverse cast of colorful characters that make up the WWE roster. WWE Immortals pairs each character to an appropriate archetype, so players can control a medieval giant (Big Show), a superhero (Trish Stratus), a sorceress (Paige) or an elemental god (The Rock). The combat borrows heavily from the like-minded DC fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us, with swipes and taps making up the basic combat system. There’s not a lot of depth, but the special moves are fun, the graphics are solid, and the freemium model doesn’t get in the way of extended game play, making it the perfect time-sink.

This is pretty much the reaction you can expect to have while listening to The Phosphorescent Blues, the stellar new record from the Punch Brothers. It defies description how this quintet makes such intricate, difficult songs seem like they are easy to play, but that is how this record feels. The bold classical-meetsAmericana opener, “Familiarity”—with its 10-minute running time, three movements, dazzling mandolin work from Chris Thile, and the first example of this record’s outstanding vocal harmonizing—is a spinetingling experience. “Boll Weevil” shows off the band’s humorous side, mixing lively bluegrass and country stylings as a talking boll weevil gives a farmer what for. And Thile again steals the show on the group’s cover of the exquisite Debussy number “Passepied.” “Magnet” is sexy, animated folk pop that features incredibly clever word play, “I Blew It Off” is acoustic pop at its best, and “Forgotten” is so tender and powerful in its subdued exploration of the fear of loneliness that it cuts to the bone. The Phosphorescent Blues is an early candidate for album of the year.

Campbell’s performance is one of several standouts in this excellent production. All of the other lead actors—Erin DeSeure as Laurey, Curly’s paramour; Bethany Gonzales as Ado Annie, who “cain’t say no”; Adam Maness as Will, her befuddled wannabe lover; Brandon Kingsley as the dangerously jealous Jud Fry; Christopher Sullivan as the Persian peddler, Ali Hakim; and Sonya Huss as Aunt Eller, the gravelvoiced matriarch of this pioneer clan—not only can sing well, but also bring great creativity to their roles.

The production benefits from the large CFA stage, which gives choreographer Sara Shoemaker plenty of room for her big production numbers. Sets

(designed by Christopher Burkhardt), lights (Kevin White) and costumes (Alter Ego) all are very good, and the background scrim showing rolling fields of flowering crops looks like something out of a Thomas Hart Benton painting.

Bob Maness is the director, and it’s no exaggeration to say that he’s pulled together a production that proves it’s possible to give a professional sheen to community theater.

Across town last weekend, Chico Theater Company

also was staging a popular musical, Mary Poppins.

During his introduction of the show, co-founder and managing director Marc Edsom announced that the company was in the market to purchase a facility after 12 years of renting. One possibility, he said, was to buy the current site.

Obviously, the place has served them well.

Twelve years is a lifetime in community theater.

However, it’s got a small stage, and shows that feature big production numbers—as Mary Poppins does—would benefit from more space.

Mary Poppins requires eight distinct sets, ranging from a parlor to the rooftop to a bank, with 22 scenes shifting among these eight sets. And, since it’s a story about a magical nanny, it calls for a number of complex special effects, such as the demolition and magical restoration of the kitchen in the “Spoonful of Sugar” sequence—stagecraft challenging even for a professional company.

J.D. Amaral’s economical but effective sets kept us oriented despite the rapid scene changes, but the special effects work only sometimes, and the magic doesn’t always come through.

The plot of Mary Poppins is familiar: A nanny with magical powers comes to the Banks family’s London household circa 1910, helps to resolve the conflict between the children and their father, George, and restores harmony. The six leads—Jenise Coon as Mary Poppins; Jeff Dickinson as Bert, the chimney sweep; John Flesch as George Banks; Ashiah Scharaga as his wife, Winifred; and A.J. Sanseverino and Natalie Bridgnell as Michael and Jane, their children—are all quite good. The kids’ parts are complex, so A.J. and Natalie deserve special praise. Credit director Joey Mahoney with giving them the support they need to handle such big roles.

Audiences will enjoy hearing such memorable songs as “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “A Spoonful of Sugar” and, of course, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” □

’ll have to cop that one of my guiltiest pleasures ILaurentiis’ in decades of movie-going has been Dino De 1980 proto-Skittles delirium, Flash

Gordon. Yeah, that intergalactic camptacular that the pervy teddy bear movie went on and on about—but for good reason. by Rarely has camp been pulled off with Craig Blamer such panache. The Queen soundtrack was just icing: “Flash! Whaaaahhhh! Savior of the universe!”

And so the Wachowskis’ (of The Matrix, for those who missed Sci-Fi 101) latest WTF-fest, Jupiter Ascending, gets a goose in the old popcorn box just for having strands of Flash Gordon woven into its DNA, albeit with the camp played Jupiter hetero. Jupiter Ascending has a lot of Ascending other movies in its genetic code, but Starring Mila the Wachowskis wrap it all up into a Kunis, Channing flaming space burrito that is distinctly Tatum and Sean cooked up from their own longBean. Directed by the running cinematic fever dream.

Granted, the popcorn box ain’t Wachowskis.

Cinemark 14, totes exploding because, despite all Feather River its pleasures, Jupiter “Ass-ending” Cinemas and ain’t a good movie. But it is good Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13. fun (if you can lock your logical buzzkill in the closet for a couple of hours), and a distinctly entertaining dose of space-opera balderdash that is much more fun than those Star Wars prequels, which the Wachowskis tweak at one point with an extended bit of spoofing.

It’s eye-candy to the Nth degree, with Mila Kunis as a Cinderella-story hotel maid swept off her toilet-scrubbing knees by some half-wolf space ninja (Channing Tatum) assigned to protect her from interstellar 1-percenters who are bent on killing her so that they can … um … well, it’s complicated, and not good news for the residents of planet Earth. So it’s much easier to just nod along with the Chicago Loop being destroyed (again) and just eat your popcorn already, OK? It’s 2015 and a cognitive narrative is so 20th century. Ω

Seventh Son is based on a young-adult novel

that I haven’t read, so it’s unclear whether the soporific dialogue and plotting is due to the source material, but the unimaginative scripting and direction sure as hell don’t keep one from developing a certain fascination with the passage of time.

Seemingly written by a group of teenagers over an evening of Dungeons & Dragons, the dialogue never rises above on-the-nose cliché (“Why did you choose this job?” [beat] “It chose me.”) and half-assed aphorisms (“Most of life’s burdens—with a little help—can become a gift.”), and melees are resolved by nothing more complicated than a roll of the loaded polyhedral dice. The movie is essentially the D&D Monster Manual adapted into a CGI time killer. And man, this one takes its water-boardin’ time.

The eponymous seventh son (of a seventh son) is a medieval farm boy (Ben Barnes) afflicted by visions, which ultimately never serve a function in the narrative. He’s dragooned into an apprenticeship with the witchhuntin’ Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges Yodaling as if Frank Oz’s hand is shoved up his ass to the elbow) to help him take down the queen witch Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore as the odd Goth at a renaissance faire) with whom he has serious long-standing issues.

There’s also a bland ingénue witch to fulfill the obligatory romance needs and buckets of pixel dust to distract from the narrative gaps.

It all unfolds in a very rudimentary way that might impress easily amused 13-yearolds, as a dungeon master’s second-string bestiary (ghasts and ogres and dragons, oh my) are trotted out to be dispatched by our intrepid posse. But the rest of us will just be bored to living death waiting for amusement that never comes. Ω

Opening this week Awake: The Life of Yogananda

This biopic about the Indian guru who introduced yoga and meditation to America in the 1920s sold out during its premiere at the Pageant, so they’ve brought it back for two special showings: Feb. 12 and Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. Cost: $10. Pageant Theatre. Not rated.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Film version of E.L. James’ massive bestseller about the BDSM relationship that develops between a sexually inexperienced college student and a young rich businessman with very particular kinks. Kingsman: The Secret Service

nuanced performances out of the three principal actors—Channing Tatum as Mark Schultz, Mark Ruffalo as older brother Dave, and a heavily made-up Steve Carell as the bizarre John E. du Pont. To their credit, Miller and company draw no easy conclusions from all these hot-button issues.

Carell’s du Pont might seem an obviously suitable case for treatment, but one of the film’s ironies has to do with the ways in which various beneficiaries of his wealth and power turn a blind eye to his increasingly creepy eccentricities. Carell’s performance is judiciously eccentric as well, and all three of the principals use deft touches of stylized exaggeration in their physical bearing.

LOCAL BANDWAGON Nothing gets me more stoked than hearing a new local band that plays something catchy and also kind of noisy and dirty. And since we’re in this local-band issue, I want to shine a light on the catchy, noisy and dirty recordings of two new local crews that are currently stoking me most: Lips of Renegade and Skin Peaks.

Lips of Renegade is a two-dude, two-chick band of high school friends whose members say they are “influenced

by Nirvana, Pixies, White Wives, Aubrey Debauchery & The Broken Bones and more” yet (somehow) sound like they’ve been listening to old-school Chico female-fronted noisy/jangly bands like Lips of Renegade 28th Day and Vomit Launch.

ALWAYS OPEN Tonight, Has Beans Coffee & Tea in downtown Chico will celebrate 15 years of hosting the weekly Open Mic-full. Current host (and frequent performer, and helluva super-sweet dude) Dan Casamajor said that the weekly event averages 20-30 performers, which adds up to tens of thousands of individual performances contributed to the local music scene. For the anniversary, Casamajor said that organizers will be putting on a special edition to celebrate: “There will be no signups. … It’s an invitation-only all-star show. We have roughly 20 performers lined up, from singer-songwriters to spoken word, to didgeridoo and elegant classical guitar.”

Here’s to another 15 years of keeping the mic open. Thanks for giving Chico’s musicians a venue and a voice.

THIS: Kanye West is one of the most important artists in America,

probably the most important artist of the last decade. PERIOD. Argue in circles all you want about his douchiness, his lack of tact when the cameras are on him, and his choices in mates, but if we’re just talking music, there is no arguing that by every current measure for success in American music—record sales, critical acclaim, music awards—he is across the board considered one of the best songwriters, producers and performers in the world. Yet as definitive as that argument is, it’s not even why I respect his work. What matters most is that he’s a consistently fresh voice in a mainstream scene that is typically lacking in artists with the courage to try new things and make a bunch of mistakes along the way.

Of course, many people don’t give his music a chance—maybe because they don’t like hip-hop, maybe because they don’t like black men who voice strong opinions, or maybe because they’ve given up on giving new things a chance—and all of that is fine if that’s where you’re at.

But if you haven’t even attempted to understand, why should anyone listen to you when you join the discussion?

LOVE’S REAL ESTATE Ship-shape I got a behind-the-scenes look at two households in action one evening. The first was the household of my new client, the Burbanks. The second was my own.

I had arrived at the Burbank home with my market analysis in hand, to discuss listing their home for sale. Mrs. Burbank answered the door with a dishrag in her hand and a harried look on her face. She waved me in before I could finish my introduction.

“I’ll be with you in a few minutes; make yourself at home,” she said quickly as she cleared a spot at the table.

She pointed toward the kitchen as she hurried away. “Help yourself to some juice or water.”

“Darlene!” she shouted, “I told you no TV till your homework is done! Bobby! Maxine!

Clean up your messes and get ready for dinner!”

Coloring books, shoes, papers, backpacks and kid stuff were scattered throughout the living room and family room, and the kids bounded around happily screaming and chasing each other through the chaos. Mrs. Burbank barked more orders to no effect.

The TV blared.

The sound of a phone ringing was faintly heard above the racket.

“That was your father!” yelled Mrs. Burbank.

“He’ll be home in 10 minutes!”

Those were the magic words. The TV silenced.

The kids snapped to attention and went to the business of cleaning up.

When Mr. Burbank came through the front door, the kids and Mrs. Burbank were there to greet him like a military lineup ready for inspection. He looked the part of The General in his crisp suit and tie, attaché case in hand. His troops were smiling, quiet and in order; his domain ship-shape. I was impressed and felt a pang of envy.

Back at the office, I called home and announced I was on my way in a Generallike manner.

When I came through the front door, I surveyed my domain: chaos. My oldest sat at the coffee table surrounded by an explosion of paper, schoolbooks, pens, pencils and paint. The middle and youngest were careening about the place screeching and flinging toys this way and that. The TV blared.

“Daddy!” they screamed when they saw me.

They all rushed me.

“What a mess, you guys,” I said.

My words were ignored. The kids climbed me like a jungle gym and made me swing them by their arms. They made me get down on my hands and knees, climbed onto my back, and rode me around through the chaos and mess.

I was envious of Mr. Burbank, but I felt bad he missed out on all the chaos.
