It’s time to unify Chico When residents of the Chapmantown neighborhood are asked what city they

decline of our public education system. I know this for a fact, as my daughter is a special-education teacher.

She has been for the past 20-plus years. Dealing with K-6 children, 10- to 12-hour days are the norm, and time on evenings and weekends is often necessary. In class, my daughter deals daily with some who are overly aggressive (she’s been severely bitten and kicked and struck on numerous occasions), unresponsive, and even those who require by Dean Carrier regular diaper-changing. I can’t help but look back at my education in public schools. While it’s true I had a couple mediocre teachers, usually ones who were simply inexperienced, the majority were good to excellent and I learned. Sometimes it took a bit more effort (I had to be chastised on occasion and spent a fair amount of time sitting in 4

the corner or staying after school). But when this occurred, my parents, knowing my characteristics, didn’t blame the teacher for my failures, they blamed themselves and me and administered the appropriate corrective measures. My parents never expected the teachers to miraculously solve my behavioral problems—that was their job! Not so much today.

Today, many parents dump their children into the public school system having no foundation for social, intellectual or behavioral attributes and expect it is the teacher’s job to mold them into model citizens who excel in algebra and can tell the difference between a verb and adverb. Even those who suffer from severe behavioral or learning disabilities are expected to excel. But, if they don’t, it’s the teachers who bear the blame.

A few months ago, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a new law that limits suspensions for kids in kindergarden through third grade for “willful defiance” no matter the language they use nor how disruptive they may be to the rest of the class. This is insane!

Politicians, again dabbling in a field of which they know little or nothing, further worsen our once proud public learning institutions. Hey, senators, one size doesn’t fit all! Ω

live in, they invariably say Chico. Technically, however, that’s not true.

They live in unincorporated Butte County. The same is true for residents of the Mulberry district just north of the fairgrounds.

Although both neighborhoods are surrounded by the city, and their residents are regularly affected by decisions made by the Chico City Council and its boards and commissions, they can’t vote in city elections or serve on those boards and commissions.

We understand that many of them like being in the county. They enjoy their leafy, semi-rural neighborhoods and worry that the city will start putting in curbs, gutters and sidewalks. And they resent being forcefully annexed to the city.

Unfortunately, there’s really no choice at this point. State law mandates that they be brought into the city. Most Chapman/Mulberry residents have septic systems, and they are under state antipollution orders eventually to hook up to the city sewer system. Doing so requires that they agree to annex.

The Butte County Local Agency Formation Commission, which is responsible for overseeing jurisdictional boundaries, has been trying for several years to compel the city to annex Chapman/Mulberry. The city, caught in financial crisis, is fearful of the cost. Ultimately LAFCo had to threaten a lawsuit to nudge the city into action.

The result is a compromise agreement that will be on the council’s Nov. 18 meeting agenda. In return for submitting a Chapman/Mulberry annexation application to LAFCo, the city will have five years before the annexation becomes effective. This will give it sufficient time to get its finances in order.

We believe joining the city will be good for Chapman/Mulberry. Yes, it will cost residents a small amount in utility-user taxes, but it will improve police and fire services. And, because the city has agreed to honor the Chapman-Mulberry Neighborhood Plan and can’t afford to put in curbs, gutters and sidewalks anyway, the character of the two areas won’t change much.

We urge the City Council to extend a warm embrace to Chapmantown and the Mulberry district by finally bringing them into the city. It’s time to unify Chico. Ω

That wasn’t so hard For the past couple of weeks, we’ve been seeing Chico police officers down-

town, during the day, on foot and on bicycles. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen boots on the ground like this and it’s a welcome sight.

Most of the disruption in the region appears to be the result of a handful of troublemakers. However, there’s no doubt that many members of the public as well as businesspeople feel safer with the police presence, especially when the officers actually integrate into the community, rather than simply driving by in their cars.

One of the bonuses of the current arrangement is that the officers are working downtown as part of their regular shifts. In other words, taxpayers aren’t paying them the rumored double-time or double-overtime “incentive pay” to patrol the business district.

We want to give credit where credit is due, so we’re going to start at the top. City Manager Mark Orme promised to make the patrols happen despite opposition from the leadership of the Chico Police Officers’Association who said the department was too understaffed. Police Chief Kirk Trostle deserves credit, too, since he stepped up and made some changes to the structure of patrols, freeing up a couple of officers for the assignment.

And to the officers who are downtown, thank you for your service. This proactive approach to making the area safer is much appreciated. Ω

SECOND & FLUME

Switch up In Chico, as most people may know, government is a weak-mayor system.

That is, the mayor, currently Scott Gruendl, isn’t elected by the voters, but rather by his or her council colleagues. The vice mayor also is chosen that way. As one would probably assume, both posts typically are held either by progressives or conservatives—whichever group holds the council majority. In other words, the lefties vote in their peeps, and vice versa.

In August 2013, however, that partisan tradition on this “nonpartisan” panel came to a halt. When Councilwoman Mary Goloff announced she was stepping down as mayor, the council voted in Gruendl as mayor and Councilman Mark Sorensen as vice mayor. The decisions weren’t unanimous. Councilman Sean Morgan voted no on installing Gruendl as mayor, and Councilman Randall Stone and Councilwoman Ann Schwab said nay to Sorensen being vice mayor.

Over the past 15 months, the council’s two honorary leaders worked well together despite their ideological differences.

I’m curious to see what’s going to happen when the gavel changes hands next month during the swearing in of incumbent Sorensen, along with newcomers Reanette Fillmer and Andrew Coolidge. Obviously, with a conservative majority, Sorensen is next in line for mayor. He seems like the kind of guy who likes ribbon-cuttings, and I’m sure he’ll do fine leading the meetings—one of the other mayoral chores.

The question in my mind is where the panel will go with the vice mayor post. Will the conservative majority be flexible and vote in one of the three progressives? Or will they defer to Morgan, the junior conservative?

I think it’s safe to say Schwab won’t get a nod here.

But what about Stone or Councilwoman Tami Ritter?

Stone has been the most vocal about reining in city employee salaries and benefits—a position that ought to be backed by the conservatives. And Ritter has been a curious and thoughtful representative who goes her own way—such as voting in favor of Sorensen for vice mayor.

Either would do an excellent job in this role and the gesture would continue the good will that started with the pairing of Sorensen and Gruendl. Plus, neither Ritter nor Stone has dropped an F-bomb from the dais.

Speaking of that faux pas by Morgan, the guy really needs to check himself on his behavior at city meetings.

In my many years of covering the City Council, I’ve seen eye-rolling and sighs on occasion. Goloff has even been called out by members of the public for it. But I’ve never seen such disrespectful behavior from a seated member of the City Council as I have from Morgan—eye-rolling, whispering, guffaws, or just total disengagement when the subject wasn’t his cup of tea. Thing is, he, like everyone else who is elected, represents Chico as a whole—not just those who think like he does and the special interests who helped elect him. In short, Morgan has a lot of maturing to do.

Then again, as we say in the newspaper business, he makes for great copy. Hell, why not make him the mayor?

Praying for sanity Re “Grand old partytime” (Newslines, by Ken Smith, Nov. 6): I am neither a Christian nor a conservative.

I’d assume that I am one of the depraved people that you pray against. Now it’s your turn. I think that you and your rich friends are evil sociopaths. I believe that the people who vote for your kind, if they aren’t rich, are hateful idiots.

My prayer is that someday this country will be restored to sanity.

‘Spare the trees’ Re “Devouring trees and doughnuts” (Newslines, by Tom Gascoyne, Nov. 6): I’m still upset about Chico allowing removal of 23 Yarwood sycamores on Mission Ranch Boulevard.

The trees occasionally drop limbs up to about 2 inches. In approximately 10 locations the sidewalk is raised by the trees’ roots, and some residents have tripped.

Instead, fix the sidewalks short term, develop a proper pruning program to reduce limb drop, and then a long-term replacement plan for the sidewalks and curbing that values the trees.

Focus on maintaining their health. Relocate sidewalks to minimize excavation into the root area and avoid soil compaction.

Sidewalks can be dramatically improved.

Reroute them away from the trees, and reconstruct with brick, pavers, asphalt, poured-inplace rubber, plastic panels or polymer-bonded aggregate. Structurally: Root-bridging, or steel plates (used in Sunnyvale), can be used. Other cities have used these methods.

This will work; locals with over 70 total years experience with tree maintenance know.

The council can spare the trees. A solution can be developed and funded. Grant funds are more available. By taking advantage of the space available in the overwide street, a long-term, safe, sustainable and aesthetic solution can be designed and built.

A candidate’s take Running for Chico City Council was an intense challenge. Most of the process was exciting and positive, although other times were a bit rough and tumble. Nevertheless, I truly enjoyed meeting the many dedicated people who work every day to make Chico a better place.

I consider myself reasonably informed of current events and I try to keep updated on political dealings both locally and nationally. Yet, as I’d assume most of the nation is, I’m not as apprised as I should be on candidates and propositions during election time.

Prior to going to the polls, I went online to the Chico News & Review for its recommendations and endorsements, printed them out, and brought them to the polls.

What I did was vote in the exact opposite direction of your recommendations.

Now, after the votes have been counted, it turns out your winning endorsement ratio is lower than Madison Bumgarner’s postseason ERA. Interesting enough, I went to your website yesterday and didn’t find anything about the results or a record of your endorsements— strange. So, thank you, News & Review, for helping me make informed, knowledgeable and sensible decisions when it matters most. I’ll continue to line my bird’s cage with your newspaper.

I agree that humans are in deep trouble. We are destroying life on the planet—it doesn’t get any more dire. But, on a day-to-day basis, most of our power lies in the area of consumption. This means thinking through the implications of our purchases. Don’t like power plants? Use much less electricity.

Don’t like oil wars? Reduce reliance on planes and automobiles. Hate the brutality and environmental impact associated with animal products? Stop buying animal products. The list is long.

I agree that sweeping changes are needed in our culture and morality. But, I don’t think that men will be persuaded by the argument that they are inherently flawed—or that one gender can make these changes while the other points a finger and waits.

That’s not eco-friendly Re “Welcome to Farm City” (Eco-event, Nov. 6): Why is the Harvest Festival considered by the CN&R to be an “Eco-Event”? While I appreciate sustainable, organic farms, most conventional farms are anything but. Not only do conventional/ factory farms use nearly 80 percent of California’s water supply each

year, their overuse of pesticides and fertilizers poison our remaining groundwater reserves. Why? Because most conventional farmers practice the more cost-effective mono-cropping, severely depleting soils of important nutrients.

Their wide use of genetically engineered seeds has also become a major environmental and health problem. These GMO seeds were said to be more ecologically friendly because they’d require less herbicides and pesticides, yet Food & Water Watch found that the “total volume of the glyphosate applied to the three biggest GE crops (corn, cotton and soybeans) increased 10-fold from 15 million pounds in 1996 to 159 million pounds in 2012.” Farmers Feed America?! Conventional/factory farmers are literally poisoning Americans with toxic, nutrientdeficient foods.

If conventional farming negatively affects our water, soil and health, how can it, in any way, be considered eco-friendly?

‘Ebola’s a gift’ Re “Nurses decry Ebola risk” (The Pulse, Nov. 6): In 1950 the global population was 2.5 billion. It’s now 7 billion and projected to reach 11 billion by 2099. This expansion will cause environmental destruction, freeway congestion, water shortages, skyrocketing costs of living, and undermining of our language, culture and quality of life.

However, this assumes no other catastrophe occurs before 2060.

America’s currently on course for groundwater exhaustion by 2030.

Without water, widespread panic, migration and starvation would occur.

Accordingly, Ebola’s a gift.

Allowing the disease to naturally prune the population now would spare us the agony of having to kill each other for food, water, housing and medical care in the future.

Just as with every other plague mankind’s endured, the strongest and fittest would survive. These survivors could then determine the Earth’s optimum population size and execute a comprehensive plan for maintaining it.

ALLEGED KILLER INCOMPETENT?

A psychologist recently determined that Joshua Epstein, the man charged with killing Randell Sexton in front of the 7-Eleven at the corner of First and Main streets in late August, is mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Early on Aug. 31, Epstein, 30, and Stephanie Vogel, 23, allegedly beat 44-year-old Sexton with a skateboard and repeatedly stabbed him in the head and upper torso, according to police. Sexton was pronounced dead on arrival at Enloe Medical Center. Epstein has been charged with murder, while Vogel faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon; both pleaded not guilty on Sept. 10.

Dr. Paul Wuehler, appointed by Butte County Superior Court to evaluate Epstein, testified on Nov. 5 that Epstein is mentally incapable of understanding his charges. Starting in early December, he will stay in a mental facility until he’s deemed capable of standing trial.

Vogel’s next hearing is set for Dec. 9.

ANGRY SANTA CRIES FOUL

Tim Crews, the trouble-stirring, irascible oldschool editor of Glenn County’s Sacramento Valley Mirror, is at it again. Never one to sit back and let a government agency ignore freedom of information laws, Crews issued a cease-and-desist notice in October to the Orland Unified School District for violating the state’s Ralph M. Brown Act, which allows only certain matters, including potential litigation, to be discussed in closed session meetings.

Crews (pictured) said the OUSD is taking up issues in closed session that must be discussed publicly. He asked for billing records from the district’s legal council, which “were almost entirely blacked out,” Crews said. A second request resulted in clean copies that indicate the district used a series of closed sessions to discuss an audit report, a matter that is not covered by the Brown Act. The school board also spent $102 to discuss Crews’ public records request.

On Nov. 7, the district sent a written response to Crews’ cease-and-desist letter that said: “In order to avoid unnecessary litigation and without admitting any violation of the Ralph M. Brown Act, the Board of Education hereby unconditionally commits that it will cease, desist from, and not repeat the challenged past actions as described above.” The letter was signed by Connie Carter, president of the OUSD Board of Education.

In an email correspondence, Crews offered his interpretation of what the letter means: “We didn’t do it and we promise we won’t do it again, but if we do, we go to court to meet Angry Santa.” (Crews does have an uncanny resemblance to St. Nick.)

Strangely enough, the shift in 2002 from a conservative to a progressive council included the election of Scott Gruendl, whose 12 years on the council ended in defeat this time around. One of the more contentious city issues in the fall of 2002 was the development of a city tree ordinance in the wake of a developer felling 110 oak trees in southeast Chico. And now, in 2014, the issue of city trees is once again high on the agenda. The more things change …

To try to get a handle on how things may or may

not change politically over the next few years, the CN&R asked both the council members-elect and the sitting members a few questions about their individual roles on the council, whether the new panel will be able to work together and the health of the urban forest.

Having first been elected in 2004, Schwab will be the longest-serving member. She said she sees her role as focusing on making decisions that are in the best interest of the community—a sentiment all the council members echoed—with

the city’s future in mind.

“My responsibility is to thoroughly understand all issues, respectfully listen to and consider all opinions in a civil manner,” she said.

Vice Mayor Sorensen said that representing the people of Chico involves “serving on the board of directors of a $100 million-plus-per-year municipal corporation, and to run that corporation in an effective and efficient manner to provide the services that a city should provide to its taxpayers.”

For his part, Morgan said his responsibility in office is giving his constituents the best return in services for their tax dollars.

Newly elected Fillmer said the role of a council member is to represent the taxpayers and make “responsible and collaborative decisions on things that are important to the community.”

Fellow newly elected Coolidge said he sees his role as a council member directly tied to finances. “I believe the role of a council member is to establish and adopt policies for the city and most importantly review and adopt the city budget,” he said.

Ritter said her role on the council includes collaborating “to adopt ordinances, resolutions, policies and regulations for the health, safety and welfare of all Chicoans and future generations.”

Stone said a council member “has the responsibility to ensure that policy and

direction is being faithfully executed by staff,” adding, without naming names, that there have been recent instances in which staff failed to do so, putting a lot of pressure on the council.

Most of the council members agreed that,

despite a new conservative majority, they will be able to work well together.

“This new council will be able to work together if we remember to be civil to one another and respect each other’s viewpoints,” Schwab said. “That doesn’t mean we won’t disagree; it just means to disagree with the opinion, not the person. I expect everyone to be opinionated.

That’s why people elected us.”

For the most part, Sorensen said, the council will agree on a majority of issues and he blamed the press for suggesting there will be a general shift politically.

The new council “absolutely” will be able to work together, he said—his first term on a liberal-dominated council was proof of that.

Morgan said he is confident the council can work together and that any noticeable change in council direction will be subtle at best.

“More importantly than a new direction is a dedication to do only those things that are relevant, important and affordable,” he said. “I believe we are all public servants with the best interests of the community in mind. While only in office for two years, I have found all my

For her part, Fillmer said she hopes that the citizens will see the council shift direction with more attention placed on public safety and finances. Her goal, she said, is to work with those council members who “want to make reasonable choices and work together on solutions.

Being a council member is not an independent role.”

Coolidge said he could not predict the actions of others and thus cannot say if the new lineup will be able to work together.

“I believe the political makeup of the new council is seven citizens who are willing to dedicate their time and efforts to making the city the best it can be for themselves and the citizens of Chico,” he offered.

Ritter said the overall political stripe of the new council would appear to be conservative but that the members will be able to work together.

“The previous council had to deal with challenges in leadership,” she said, “and despite a progressive majority, we elected a conservative vice mayor. We made a clear statement that we were willing to work together then, and we will continue to work together now.”

Stone said he doubts the public will note a change in direction by the council and is “certain” the members will be able to work together.

As for the health of the city’s trees, some

council members believe the city needs to hire an urban forester while others declined to comment altogether.

Schwab said the city needs to rehire an in-house, full-time urban forester.

Ritter said the urban forest is in a bit of jeopardy and agreed that it is well past time the city hire an urban forester as well as implement a management plan.

Morgan said the state of the urban forest is a matter of “perspective,” and that having an urban forester does not “guarantee quality results.”

Stone said the city’s trees are not being properly maintained but, then, neither are its roads, parks and public safety.

“This has a tremendous impact on our community in ways that are seen and unseen and unrecognized by most,” he said, “This is true of most every city in America. The next shoe to drop after fiscal solvency is achieved and after we dodge pension bullets, assuming we ever do, is infrastructure. This includes the distant urban forest.”

Neither Sorensen nor Coolidge weighed in on the urban forest question, and Fillmer said she was not prepared to answer the question without further review. Ω

Beat cops and armed private security to patrol downtown through the holidays ed and green might be the traditional colors associated with the Rhoping holiday season, but Chico business owners and city officials are that adding a lot more black, white and blue to the downtown

palette will help attract holiday shoppers.

At the direction of city management and behest of downtown business organizations, the Chico Police Department has been rolling out a plan to enhance its presence in the city center with foot and bike patrols over the past few weeks. Additionally, private armed security guards returned to downtown on Monday evening (Nov. 10).

The plan for beat cops to return to downtown was announced at an Oct. 7 press conference hosted by city officials and downtown business groups (see Newslines, “Spotlight hits downtown,” Oct. 9).

Though it was implied the changes would go into effect immediately, some involved parties—including Chico Police Officers’Association (the local police union) Vice President Rich Hartman—expressed concern over how the understaffed department would cover the shifts, as CPD officers already have to work mandatory overtime.

Rumors of incentives were bandied about, with Mayor Scott Gruendl saying there was a possibility of offering double overtime for officers who take the shifts.

CPD Lt. Dave Britt explained the downtown patrols, which began about three weeks ago, were initially covered by shifting existing mandatory overtime hours to the patrol department, and the return of two injured officers since the plan began has helped alleviate the strain on manpower. With the reorganization, the downtown beat has become a regular assigned shift—generally filled by Officer Jim Parrott and another officer—from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with the possibility of expanding these patrols if more officers become available.

Chico Police Officer Peter Durfee and Parrott both said having officers on the downtown beat has other advantages, with the daily face-to-face patrols facilitating communication among business owners, law enforcement and the city’s homeless population.

“It’s not necessarily about enforcement all of the time,” said Durfee, who also serves as president of the CPOA, while working the downtown beat. “It’s just about having a presence, being seen and talking to people. If we can help somebody who is homeless, we have different programs to help people get off the street.”

Parrott noted that, when he was a rookie at the CPD, his regular assignment was on a bike downtown, but such positions were eliminated due to staffing shortages. He also said he was pulled from the CPD’s detective unit during last year’s holiday season to patrol downtown by bike.

Other than the issue of how to foot the bill for extra patrols, there

were other details left vague at the Oct. 7 press conference. The thrust was that Clean and Safe Chico, the Chico Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Chico Business Association (DCBA) had together formulated a plan to address public safety concerns primarily caused by the “transient” element downtown, with part of the plan including the added police patrols, but little more was revealed.

It was unclear at that time whether the plan would involve bringing back private security guards from Armed Guard Private Protection Services to the region. Last year, a group of business owners called the R-Town Downtown Coalition hired the same armed private security outfit. This year, the rent-a-cops come courtesy of the DCBA. The security firm’s Lt. Mike Morris acknowledged the DCBA contract, but referred any questions about how many units, what their duties will be and what times they will be on patrol to Melanie Bassett, executive director of the DCBA. Bassett did not return phone calls as of press time.

There is also some confusion about how long the CPD’s new downtown policing plan will be in effect. Durfee said CPD Chief Kirk Trostle wants the added patrols through the holiday season, while City Manager Mark Orme— whose directive prompted the patrols—said he believes the plan should last indefinitely. Britt confirmed the current staffing plan runs through January, when it will be re-evaluated based on Pot is popular staff availability.

Number of female hunters takes a big jump

sights to a once-overlooked audience: women and children.

Ducks, geese and other winged prey better watch their feathered backs.

Applications for waterfowl hunting have experienced a steady increase over the past decade in California, ringing in at a peak 1.34 million license items last year.

In Sacramento County alone, 67 percent of the hunting license items issued to locals was for waterfowl-related items.

The ascending interest could be attributed to the popularity of a certain reality show featuring hirsute duck-yodelers, or to a social shift in which local, wild meats are encouraged over factory-farmed fowl.

“For me, it was an opportunity to engage in that real environment and also obtain food in a sustainable way,” said Christine Cunningham, a hunting-education instructor and author. “We know food tastes better the more involved we are with it and the closer to the source it is.”

Whatever the case, numerous organizations, including the federal Bureau of Land Management, are spending more time cultivating new fowl hunters through programs for youth, women and mobility-impaired hunters.

It’s working. The number of female hunters in the country exploded by nearly 50 percent from 2006 to 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau—the biggest jump in 20 years of available data. Overall, women now make up 11 percent of all hunters.

Cunningham, a member of the Women Hunters board of directors, came to hunting as an adult, which she said is the trend for today’s distaff set. “We as a culture are becoming sensitive to the fact that animals aren’t being treated well in mass meat production,” she said.

She added that meat-eaters today prefer the idea that wild animals had “happy lives” before they wind up on dinner plates.

And while Cunningham noted that men’s hunting programs tend to focus on the shooting aspect of the sport, women’s hunting concentrates on incorporating the fam-

ily and educating children about where their food comes from.

Overall, general hunting numbers have remained “pretty flat” over the past decade, said Brad Burkholder, a senior environmental scientist at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Yearly sales of hunting license applications in the state have dropped about 9 percent since 2000, according to department data.

But more and more game bird hunters are heeding the proverbial quail call. Applications to shoot birds have increased by nearly 42 percent since 2000—27 percent in the past four years alone.

Fish and Wildlife has a financial stake in getting these families to hunt, as it’s a good source of revenue for the state agency. The department reported $5.4 million in game bird hunting revenues last year. Big hunting licenses and deer tags, as well as wild pig, bear and other game tags and drawings brought in an additional $19 million.

That’s $24.4 million in huntingrelated sales on public lands for 2013.

Anxiety in academia Pay inequality, faculty retention contribute to workplace dissatisfaction at Chico State omething is broken at Chico Sdepends State. What exactly needs fixing on whom you ask, but this

much has been established: Low morale, workplace dissatisfaction and distrust of administration are pervasive among the university’s rank and file.

Members of the Academic Senate indicated as much on Sept. 25, when they approved a nonbinding request for California State University Chancellor Timothy P. White to appoint an independent consultant to evaluate problems on campus and offer solutions.

And the results of a recently released campus-wide survey, conducted in May, further illustrate the chilly climate on campus. About 382 employees—including administrators, faculty and staff— answered the question, “How well does the university maintain satisfactory general work environment?” Only 6 percent of respondents said “exceptionally well,” while 19 percent said “quite well,” 31 percent said “somewhat,” 31 percent said “very little,” and 12 percent said “not at all.”

In an interview with the CN&R last month, Chico State President Paul Zingg lamented the university’s inability to retain institutional knowledge as well as “abysmal” compensation levels that have remained frozen throughout the CSU system since the worst of the Great Recession.

And according to a study presented at the Academic Senate meeting on Thursday (Nov. 6), Chico State has lost 164 tenuretrack faculty members since 2009, and has hired only 100 to replace them.

The data on faculty retention reflect what’s been happening system-wide, Zingg said in an email this week, and he added that the university plans on hiring more than 100 tenure-track faculty through 2017.

Kathy Kaiser, a sociology professor and longtime Academic Senate member, said losing experience and knowledge—particularly in the face of increasing enrollment and pressure to graduate students in four years—can be disheartening.

“This issue hiding in plain sight—failing to recognize how low we were—has been part of

why people felt demoralized but couldn’t quite put their finger on it,” Kaiser said. “It’s becoming a lot clearer to them now.”

Another factor contributing to the

low morale is compensation. As one part-time instructor who spoke to the CN&R on condition of anonymity put it, “the pay is horrendous.” She gets about $3,000 to teach a semester-long course, which, between preparation, office hours, grading, and corresponding with students, translates to about $14 an hour, she calculated.

Respondents to the campuswide survey commonly said their workload justifies higher compensation, their wages are at the bottom of the CSU system, and the salary gap between administrators and faculty and staff is unfair. The survey’s authors wrote: “There is a perception of injustice as a result of employees in [Business and Finance] receiving raises and/or bonuses while faculty and staff haven’t received meaningful raises in five-[plus] years.”

That’s no misperception. While many employees haven’t received a cost-of-living adjustment in years, certain top campus officials

have received generous bumps in salary. Many have pointed to Lorraine Hoffman, vice president of Business and Finance, as an example.

Hoffman made $199,239 in 2011 and has secured raises every year since; her current salary is $217,161. Stacie Corona, associate vice president of Financial Services and University Budget, made $97,152 in 2006 and is making $141,363 this year. Chief of Staff Karla Zimmerlee received a raise of $12,873 this year.

Zingg himself likely will get a raise soon as well. If the CSU Board of Trustees votes to approve a 3 percent raise for all campus presidents during its meetings on Nov. 12 and 13, he will receive $8,385 on top of his current annual salary ($279,500) retroactive to July 1.

“Staff receives increases when their jobs increase in responsibility or with counter offers elsewhere,” Zingg responded in an email.

“Same with faculty.”

Faculty wages, at least, likely won’t remain frozen for long. On Tuesday (Nov. 11), the CSU faculty union approved a three-year contract that would raise its base compensation pool of $1.53 billion by 3 percent, according to The Sacramento Bee. The trustees will consider approval of the contract this week.

An ancient art form, the mandala is an intricate, beautiful, one-of-a-kind creation tied to a theme—this particular mandala is meant for healing. On Nov. 8, the final day of viewing in the Bell Memorial Union on the Chico State campus, Losang held a dissolution ceremony, during which he destroyed the mandala. Such is the impermanence of life. PURPOSE EQUALS PREVENTION

People who have a sense of purpose in life are more likely to seek preventive health care, a study finds.

Researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin looked at more than 7,000 respondents of the Health and Retirement Study, comparing those who indicated they felt a sense of purpose with their use of various preventive health services, according to the Los Angeles Times. The study’s authors then controlled for demographic factors such as wealth, education and marital status, finding there is indeed a connection between sense of purpose and proactive medical care.

The researchers suggest increased utilization of preventive health services could help mitigate soaring costs. (Americans spent $3.8 trillion on health care in 2012.) “These troublesome realities could be offset by greater use of preventive health care services, which are known to enhance health and reduce health care costs,” the authors wrote.

PROPONENTS MOURN PROP. 45

Supporters of failed Proposition 45 warn that health insurance rates will continue to skyrocket without state oversight.

On Nov. 4, about 60 percent of voters rejected Prop. 45, which would have given the state insurance commissioner authority to reject health insurance rate increases, according to California Healthline. Deep-pocketed insurers such as Kaiser Permanente and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association raised about $57 million to defeat the measure, while supporters raised only $4 million.

Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones called the defeat “a major setback for California consumers and small businesses,” while Jamie Court, president of Consumer Watchdog—which put the measure on the ballot—predicted that “insurance price gouging is going to continue without Proposition 45’s protection.”

POT ADVOCATES EYE 2016

As two more states and the nation’s capital legalized the recreational use of cannabis during the election on Nov. 4, advocates in California are already making a push for 2016.

Plans to legalize and tax marijuana sales were approved by voters in Alaska, Oregon and Washington, D.C.—though Congress may overturn the voter-approved initiative in D.C.—joining Colorado and Washington in decriminalizing pot. In 2016, California will be the highest-profile state to vote on the issue, though voters in Arizona, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada likely will see pot on the ballot as well, according to USA Today. Legalization advocates also are preparing legislative measures in Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Opponents to legalization aren’t giving up, however, as they point to the failed measure in Florida—which received 58 percent of the vote, but needed 60 percent to pass—and other smaller measures as evidence that the nation isn’t being swept by the movement.

would be placed in a medically induced coma for his emergency flight to Sacramento, she could be forgiven for not immediately considering what her daughter, Mallory, would eat for lunch the next day.

But as Openshaw discovered after Hunter’s motorcross accident at Cycleland Speedway near Oroville on July 16, even amid tragedy, practical matters continue demanding attention.

It was a tremendous relief, then, when Wings of Eagles, a local, volunteer-based nonprofit program for the families of seriously ill children, offered its assistance.

Over the next two months, Hunter underwent three surgeries to alleviate bleeding in his brain and repair his eye socket, optic nerve and skull. Meanwhile, Wings of Eagles provided a gift card to Safeway so Mallory, who stayed in Chico with friends, could buy lunch or groceries while her parents were away from home—and their jobs.

“You’re not working, not providing for your family when you’re taking care of your child in the hospital,” Openshaw said during an interview. “Everything was taken care of back here.”

Amazingly, Hunter hasn’t experienced any lingering cognitive effects, Openshaw said, and he’s cleared to drive, work and go to school (he wants to enter Butte College’s welding program). And with the help of Wings of Eagles and a groundswell of

community support, the family has made it through an episode Openshaw calls “a complete and total blur.”

Eagles in 1993 after her son, Joseph, died of a rare form of leukemia. Since then, Wings has directed more than $1 million raised through community events and private donations to families in Butte, Colusa, Glenn and Tehama counties.

Much of the support the organization provides is practical. Each family receives a prepaid gas card for emergencies, gift cards for groceries, and a “hospital care kit” for lengthy hospital stays. The nonprofit also picks up slack financially, often paying for phone bills, vehicular maintenance, furniture and appliances.

Further, Wings of Eagles is there with emotional support. Its volunteers keep in touch with families via phone calls, letters and home visits, and they host a Christmas party for all the families each holiday sea-

son and provide the children with egg baskets on Easter.

Most children accepted are under 18 years old, but Alvarez said Wings also serves 18- to 25-year-old dependents because “they’re considered adults, but they’re relying on their families for help,” she said. Families must provide documentation of illness upon referral, and preference is given to families living on limited government assistance, single-parent households and pediatric cancer cases.

Take 4-year-old Jessen Whelchel. On March 1 last year, he was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma. His mother, Melanie Whelchel, was told that a tumor had wrapped around his left kidney and abdominal aorta, and the cancer had already spread to his bones and surrounding organs.

Whelchel never received a prognosis from doctors, because “they didn’t want me to know the numbers. It’s not good HEALTHLINES continued on page 14

chances,” she paused. “His kind of cancer is kind of a crap shoot.

There’s no commonality in which kids will relapse, which kids won’t, and how they respond to treatment.”

It didn’t take long for Whelchel to hear from Wings of Eagles.

“They came right away, because everyone knew we would be leaving straight to Sacramento,” she said. “They came with toys and blankets to keep him busy and keep his mind off everything. It was all done quickly—literally the morning we left.”

In the months that followed, Jessen went through six rounds of chemotherapy, four surgeries— including one 9 1/2-hour marathon procedure to remove the tumor—a stem cell transplant and antibody treatments, at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento and UC San Francisco. Travel, caring for Jessen and catering to his picky eating habits demanded all of Whelchel’s time.

“He wouldn’t eat hospital food,” Whelchel said. “But [Wings of Eagles] gave us a Safeway gift card every month, so I would go get him food he was used to, food he was willing to eat. He was down to 29 pounds.”

Jessen has put on weight since finishing his treatments in May. He’s currently 43 pounds, and his cancer is in remission. Her son is still at high risk of relapse, Whelchel said, but for now, he’s in good health and super into toy trucks.

first got sick at age 4, when she stuck a Tic Tac up her nose. “When the doctor went to remove it,” Meghan said, “he hit a membrane.”

“It attacked her brain,” her mother continued. “It caused a viral infection; she was having 300 to 400 seizures in a day.”

Meghan was diagnosed with Rasmussen’s encephalitis—an extremely rare neurological disease that causes inflammation in the brain, frequent and severe seizures, and loss of motor skills and speech. The only course of treatment was a hemispherectomy— removing half of her brain.

Meghan has undergone a total of seven brain surgeries. She’s paralyzed on one side of her body, and walking, even small distances with a cane, is laborious for her.

Remarkably, she’s able to talk clearly and is quick to laugh. Her favorite hobby is drawing.

For Teresa Kemper, life is “nonstop therapy, runs to Sacramento and homeschooling,” she said, but she’s had help along the way. Wings of Eagles has, on more than one occasion, changed the oil in her van and provided her with new tires.

“If I need help throughout the month, I can always ask,” Kemper said. “I wouldn’t have been able to make it without them.” Ω

Bad-news bearer Retired professor doesn’t mince words on humanity’s destruction of the planet

s an environmental speaker, Guy Adelivers McPherson practices tough love. He blunt messages—full of doom and

gloom—that tend to jolt even those listeners who come in deeply aware of climate change.

His thrust is best summarized by his blog’s title: Nature Bats Last. To put it another way, McPherson posits that humans have tinkered with the global ecosystem so much that we’ve caused our own death by natural causes.

In the past, he’s gone so far as to forecast humanity’s life expectancy, giving an expiration date of 2030, but lately has refrained from issuing such a bold statement—not because our circumstances have improved (they haven’t), but because his approach has shifted. Nowadays, rather than delivering science-laden presentations that leave audi-

ences numb, McPherson seeks to help people process what he’s presented.

“It used to be I was looking for shock value, so I would focus on the date,” McPherson said. “But as my message and my delivery have become more nuanced over time, and have tended to focus increasingly on the individual human response, I’m trying not to focus so much on the date and instead focus on the emotional and psychological response we might have.

“That said, [climate scientist] Paul Beckwith’s statement about 6 degrees [Celsius rise in global temperatures] within a decade, made just over two years ago, is compelling.

Other scientists have been unwilling to state a case, to make the kind of statements Beckwith and I have been making, which is unfortunate….”

McPherson—a retired professor of natural sciences, ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona—lives off the grid on a 2.7-acre homestead in New Mexico, which he and his wife share with a small family. He ventures out periodically, speaking to groups large and small, across the world.

When the CN&R reached him by phone last week, he’d just returned from New Zealand. This weekend, he starts a speaking tour of Northern California and Oregon that includes a local swing Nov. 18-20 and culminates in the Earth at Risk conference Nov. 22-23 in San Francisco.

It’ll be his second trip to Chico in as many months. Peter Melton, who organized his upcoming itinerary, brought him to town Sept. 30 as part of wider circuit. McPherson drew capacity crowds of 130 at Chico State’s Colusa Hall and 50 at the 100th Monkey Café, Melton said, with the vast majority staying till the bitter end.

In fact, Melton said, most attendees moved past the initial reaction of “What can we do?” to a realization of “the Titanic already hit the iceberg.” The Chico talks went like others where “every different range of reaction shows up, and people get to decide who they are amidst the high probability that the ship’s going down.”

Added Melton: “Most of the people who come have some kind of sustainability or environmental or green energy to them; they care. From [McPherson’s] perspective, there’s not much we can do, and that’s a whole other elephant to swallow.”

So, then, why does McPherson even bother?

Why not stay home, within his self-sufficient spread?

“I strongly suspect it’s too late for our species—I don’t think it’s too late for many other species,” he said, “and I’m a huge fan of those other species.”

In other words, humanity’s days may be numbered, but we can make responsible decisions nonetheless.

McPherson’s latest tour, coincidentally, comes on the heels of the synthesis report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The IPCC, established by the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization, spells out environmental impacts in stark terms.

“The hits keep coming,” McPherson said—another reason he’s modified his prepared remarks, even since September, to focus less on scientific evidence and more on humanistic impact.

“I used to get people who denied anthropogenic [i.e. man-made] climate change on a regular basis,” he explained. “I haven’t seen that for a while. It’s getting really, really hard to deny anthropogenic climate change.”

This local visit coincides with a Butte College seminar in sustainability studies taught by sociology instructor Mimi Riley.

After becoming familiar with McPherson’s work, Riley connected with Melton. She will host McPherson, who will speak at two seminar sessions (Tuesday and Thursday) plus at the college’s Chico campus.

“Climate change, there’s so much political blockage out there in the mass media that people are afraid to take a position on it,” Riley said. “Another reason people don’t want to talk about it is [because] it’s scary; it’s a topic that the human race has never had to deal with….

“I wanted to book [McPherson] here because I think it’s really important for community members to engage in this dialogue.

Whether people walk away thinking [he] has it right or [he] is a nut case or whatever people walk away with, I think it’s going to provoke a debate that’s really necessary for us at this point.” Ω

Small scale, big dreams For Mike Skram II, seeing Star Wars at the El Rey Theatre in 1977 was “a life-changing moment.” Skram, 46, is a modern-day Geppetto of sorts, and mastermind behind MS 2 Designs, aka Mike Skram II Designs: 1/6 Scale Figures and Miniatures.

The Chico man has successfully carved a niche, combining his hobby with a developing career in the world of miniatures. One highlight was working on HBO’s skit comedy show Funny or Die. Episodes from his skit, Brick Novax’s Diary, were compiled into a film, which won Best American Short Film at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. He also writes reviews on one-sixth scale action figures for Black Ops Toys.

How did that trip to see Star Wars with your family change your life?

I was so fortunate to have been a kid in the 1970s. It was such a great decade for films and TV. There was so much science fiction, fantasy and horror film stuff that a kid with a vivid imagination could sink his teeth into. For the last 37 years, I have been tinkering with kit-bashing, scratch-building and fabricating miniatures. Combined with past exposure to many a Godzilla film, as well as the sci-fi B movies of the 1950s, I came away with a strong desire to learn about how these imaginative miniatures in film were created.

How else did your family encourage your interests?

My dad introduced me to the sci-

ence-fiction, fantasy and horror films that he had been into as a kid—the classic stuff that was being rebroadcast on late-night TV on weekends. We would watch Creature Features with host Bob Wilkins, out of the San Francisco Bay Area. It was the most fun a kid could possibly have. I loved it.

Describe what goes on in the One Sixth Warrior Forum.

In 2003, I discovered the online resource called the One Sixth Warrior Forum (www.onesixth warriors.com). It is a discussion forum and a hosting site, where the subject of one-sixth scale—or “Sixthscale”—is king. Finding the OSW really did feel like a cominghome moment for me. I found myself surrounded by like-minded people with very similar backgrounds and skill sets. This has led to job offers, as well as invitations to one-sixth scale trade shows and exhibitions—just imagine ComiCon for one-sixth scale action figures. Today I work designing one-sixth scale action figures and accessories for a company called Cal-Tek (www.caltek online.com). I also head up

research and development for ongoing and upcoming projects, and design most of the packing boxes for the figures.

How has this evolved into honoring veterans?

One of our newest things I work on are figures based on actual folks who have served in the military.

There is one gentleman in particular—a highly decorated U.S. Army ranger—who I have been lucky enough to get to know. He is one of the most humble, kindest folks imaginable. It is an honor for me to have the opportunity to design a figure based on him. My hope is to be able to explore and create new ideas, to feel the enthusiasm for making something from nothing.

That is what got me started back in the 1970s, and has fueled me ever since. I am blessed. Thank God for dreams and dreamers.

Most Saturdays, after taking a stroll through the farmers’ market, I find myself with a cup of coffee in hand staring up at the walls of Art Etc., glancing through the Dave Simcox prints, treating the retail store as an art gallery. Thankfully, Dave and his wife, Anna, who own the store, allow me the indulgence with grace, never annoyed by my lingering presence.

Every time I walk out of the downtown Chico business, I’m left pining for a place with infinite wall space where I could hang every piece of artwork that has stolen my heart. Dave’s imagination dreamt up something far better and much more realistic: a Christmas tree.

Dave, who is also a clay tile artist, realized his talent in tile work was easily transferable to Christmas ornaments and spent the past year designing pieces to release this holiday season. The new line of artwork requires no additional walls and can be hung by the dozen. No imaginary home needed.

Together with son Dean, Dave has created 83 designs for the clay ornaments, under the name Prairie Bungalow, with each ornament handmade by the duo. Dave described the designs as ranging from “really cute to funny to absurd,” with my favorites being the farm animals: cows with ornaments hanging from their horns and a horse in a Santa hat. Dean and Dave have made 800 individual hand-carved and -painted ornaments so far.

Though the ornaments have been wildly popular with locals—some designs are already sold out—Dave is actually targeting a market outside Chico. He sees an opportunity to design lines of ornaments for certain industries and interests, having retailers outside of Chico sell the small pieces of artwork.

Making a large stained-glass window is not only an artistic endeavor, but also a major construction project, as the photos of Elizabeth Devereaux on this page illustrate.

Her work can be found across the country, in churches, mortuaries, libraries and corporate office buildings as well as private residences. It has appeared in numerous exhibitions, been written up in newspapers and magazines, and received many awards of merit.

The Noe Valley Ministry project is one of two she worked on simultaneously in recent months. The other was a series of four panels, each about 5 feet square, commissioned by Hillside Mortuary and Memorial Park in Culver City.

The most prominent example of her work in Chico is found on the second floor of City Hall, where much of the east wall is a stainedglass image of mountains and a stream. She also designed the inground fountain and other elements of the new City Plaza.

She works out of an industrial building off Meyers Street in south Chico. There is an office and design studio in front and an expansive, open fabrication area behind them. This room is filled with the tools of the trade: large work tables, kilns, a bevel grinder and polisher, and so forth. Much of its north wall has been replaced by floor-to-ceiling windows with adjustable shelves so that works in progress can be viewed in the proper light.

The word “architectural” in the name of Devereaux’s business is significant. The kind of large, even monumental work she does, usually in tandem with a practicing architect, must not only satisfy the esthetic desires of her customers, it must also be strong enough to withstand the elements, from high winds and rain to dry rot and mold and, in some cases, earthquakes.

And any new window installed in an existing building must be adapted to the material at hand, whether stone, masonry or wood, and the condition of the structure.

It is one of the most demanding of all art forms. It is also one of the most beautiful because of the way it uses translucence to translate the white light of the sun into brilliantly colorful images. That is why it has been so popular over the centuries, especially in houses of worship, where it has been thought of as “the mysticism of light.”

And as the 20th century progressed, it moved away from the kind of literal storytelling found in medieval churches and toward abstract but symbolic explorations of form and color.

It was building new cathedrals at a quick pace, and it spent lavishly on windows because they more than any other physical feature gave parishioners a feeling of holiness.

Mobile glass studios emerged, crisscrossing Europe and spreading the art form to Germany,

Switzerland and Britain even as they shared techniques and came up with new colors and styles.

Stained glass continued to flourish and evolve through the Renaissance period, but it diminished considerably after the Reformation.

smaller projects, residences and such. She wanted to do larger pieces that took advantage of her deep knowledge of the Catholic Church, but as she says, “It’s hard to get into the church world if you have no experience.”

Her entry into that world eventually came through her involvement in the Catholic reform movement that emerged following the Second Vatican Council in 1962.

Contacts there led to commissions, and her career began to take off.

She and her husband split up when their kids were 9 and 11. She was living in Marin County at the time. On a later visit to Harbin Hot Springs, a retreat center near Middletown, she met a man during an aikido class who was to become her second husband. He’s Nick Malone, a Chico psychotherapist.

In 1989, Devereaux moved to Chico to join him; they’ve been together for 27 years.

She credits him lavishly for supporting her work. Every new commission requires her to be gone for days at a time, she says, and he accepts that as part of the deal. He knows she wouldn’t be who she is without her art and business.

She’s now 72, but her face is unlined and she looks 15 years younger, despite her shock of white hair. That youthfulness carries over into her work, which she approaches with unflagging enthusiasm, in the root sense of that “LIGHT” continued on page 22

word, “to be filled up with God.” Every window, she says, is designed to evoke nothing less than “the presence of the holy in our worship spaces,” and it’s her job to make that happen.

She has accumulated a body of

work that demonstrates her approach to window art. Architects across the country are familiar with it and often include her in their lists of prospective artists they give to members of building committees.

Each new commission goes through a three-part process. First comes listening to the stories of the community, as told by its members during meetings at which Devereaux takes notes but says little, other than to ask: “What makes this church unique? What do you love about this church? Is there any of my work that strikes you?”

That’s followed by doing extensive research into the history of the place, region and site. Once that’s completed, she creates a design that “reflects and integrates the story into the architecture and art of the site.”

Then she begins to build the window. She maps it out by drawing a full-size sketch, or “cartoon,” from which she will make sectional patterns, similar to sewing patterns,

that will be used in cutting the glass pieces. Then she orders the glass.

She uses only hand-blown glass from Fremont Antique Glass, in Seattle. The colors are approximate, and she often tweaks them in her shop, but the glass has a textured translucence that can’t be found in machine-made glass.

She uses many pieces of

beveled glass in her pieces. Each bevel must go through five stages of grinding and polishing before it’s ready for use, but by then it adds a sparkling, crystalline quality to the image.

She’s also fond of using 24-carat gold luster, which she buys in tiny bottles that cost a thousand dollars each. When applied

and baked onto the glass, the luster adds a rich golden color to the image. Historically, stained-glass windows have shown their beauty only during daytime, disappearing into darkness at sunset. Devereaux’s gold-lustered windows, in contrast, glow indoors at night with a kind of amber richness even in the softest interior light.

For 18 years she’s relied on fellow artist Owen Gabbert to partner with her in building these windows. He has his own stainedglass-art business, she explains, but is happy to help her, for which she is grateful.

Her son, Christopher Tallant, also works in the studio. He moved to Chico a couple of years ago, and

integral part of its neighborhood for more than three decades, ever since it began to reach beyond the walls of its home on Sanchez Street to serve a larger worshipping community, work for social justice, foster and appreciate the arts and help congregants work on personal and spiritual challenges.

For the past 3 1/2 years the congregation has been worshipping in the chapel at nearby St. Luke’s Hospital, waiting for a $3.5 million renovation of the church to be completed. All that remains is to finish installing an elevator.

“Yes, we’re very antsy to get back in the church,” Noe Valley Ministry’s treasurer, Cindy Cake, said in a phone interview.

The architect on the project is San Francisco-based John Goldman. His specialty is churches, he says, and he’s known Devereaux and appreciated her work for about 35 years, long enough to become good friends. They’d worked on smaller projects previously, but this was their first major enterprise together.

Cake, who is on the building committee, says Devereaux was always willing to modify the design if the group wanted changes.

Originally church members didn’t intend to do the window.

They had enough money to commission some drawings, but not the window itself. But when they saw Devereaux’s illustrations, they were so thrilled they decided they’d find the money somewhere and commissioned the window.

“We felt like she really got it, was really tuned into it,” Cake said.

The huge new window behind the altar, she adds, “is gorgeous.”

Once again Elizabeth Devereaux has evoked “the presence of the holy in a worship space” by summoning sunlight to shine through a window of colored glass, beautifying the world. Ω

The Chico event is one of the National Storytelling Network’s annual Tellabration celebrations, which take place all over the world on or around the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Originating in 1988, the events are meant to be benefits, either for local storytelling guilds or nonprofit service organizations, and are focused on helping build community among storytellers and the people who love them.

Locally, Tellabration will be held Sunday, Nov. 16. After a dinner catered by Spice of Life, local storytellers Rosemary Quinn, Baba Kauna, Kyle Bowen (who has appeared on Snap Judgment), O’Malley and others will perform, followed by live music. The theme is Fall Tales: Stories of Transition and Transformation, and some of the youth who use 6th Street’s services also will tell stories.

voices heard through their stories,” O’Malley said.

“The most powerful way to reach someone is through a story and I think that, for some people who might be closed off or have some boundaries with the homeless community in Chico, storytelling is a great way to get past those boundaries.”

Jennifer Barzey, program manager at the 6th Street Center for Youth, said she admired how O’Malley got the center’s youths involved, by hosting a series of storytelling workshops and open mics there leading up to the event.

For O’Malley, storytelling reminds her of her own youth.

“I grew up hearing a lot of stories,” O’Malley said.

“My dad’s side of the family is Irish-American, and lots of storytelling just naturally happened in our house.”

She said she got serious about it three years ago, partly inspired by her aunt Eileen Hanna, a professional storyteller living in Eugene, Ore., who also will join the celebration. O’Malley still remembers her first off-the-cuff attempt at a story swap hosted by her aunt, an embarrassing childhood tale about her mistaking rabbit poop for “really cool pebbles” on a Girl Scout excursion.

O’Malley used to run a monthly Chico Story Slam event—and accompanying storytelling workshop—at 100th Monkey Cafe, and said she hopes Chico Tellabration helps unite storytellers and fans to strengthen the form locally. She said she’d like to start another monthly event to help storytellers develop and share their tales.

The 6th Street Center for Youth was founded six years ago and provides meal service, showers, laundry facilities, basic hygiene items and other resources to homeless and runaway youths, ages 14 to 24, on weekdays between 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. It also employs social workers who offer services including counseling, housing, employment and connection to other services.

Barzey said the center is having a record year in helping “members”—those who make regular use of the center—meet their goals. Thus far they’ve helped 31 young people find housing and 34 find jobs, more than in any previous year. Fundraising events like Chico Tellabration are essential to the center, she said, helping to fund valuable programs and raise awareness about homelessness. Ω

Grunge on the rocks Nirvana-informed musical a challenging, if disjointed, postmodern mashup

without the author telling us in the program Eis theven notes, it’s pretty obvious that David Lee’s Nirvanov work of a brainy, Generation X college student

bent on assembling a clever post-modern academic theatrical exercise rather than creating a sympathetic exploration of what by compelled the grunge music icon to Carey Wilson blow his brains out with a shotgun in the solitude of his garage attic.

Sound challenging and a bit weird? So it is. But the Blue Room has never shied away from delivering challenging and/or weird works, and some of the company’s greatest hits over the years, such as Hedwig and the Angry Inch, or Hank Williams: Lost Highway, have been musical productions focusing on dysfunctional artists, so in that regard the current production of Nirvanov (directed by Chad Lewis) is part of an ongoing continuum.

Set on a simple stage decorated with scrawled quotes culled from Nirvanov/Ivanov’s dialogue (“No one will ever understand my intentions”), the play is introduced by the immaculately dressed, bearded, and accented Chekhov (Matt Hammons), delivering a preamble to the main action of the play. His prelude serves as a rather vapid disclaimer: “I hope you enjoy yourself this evening, ladies and gentlemen, but if you don’t, just stomp and boo and hiss. That’s what they did the first time in 1887. And remember, my precious 28

little audience, I never intended to write about angels or villains, but I never could resist writing about a few clowns. And so, our little play begins …”

Which it does, after a fashion, as the ghostly Frances Farmer (Ashley Garlick) appears to sketch out her own biography, including, “They tied me to the bed, fucked with my head and left me for dead. I am not now nor have I ever been Red. God is dead and so am I! Ta-Da!” At which point the titular character finally enters the scene in the embodiment of his younger self (played by Jackson Indar), singing the show’s first tune, “I’m gonna grow up to be a superhero rock star/a rockabilly rock star times three/ I’m gonna fly through the air in my silver underwear/ while the whole world stops to stare at me.”

The ghostly Farmer and young Nirvanov are eventually interrupted by the entrance of the grown-up Nirvanov (Michael Bone), who concludes young Nirvanov’s song with “The whole world stops to laugh at me/ watched me slide into the sea.”

With the entrance of the Courtney Love character Lvov (Nikki Sierra), the main cast of characters is complete and the play ambles along in its depiction of failed communication, existential angst, personal depression and metaphysical despair. Eventually the Goldman family—Mrs. (Natalie Valencia), Mr. (Don Eggert), and daughter Sasha (Kaila Davidson)—are enigmatically inserted, exacerbating the disjointed air of the play’s post-modern narrative. Sasha serves as a representative of the naïve young fans who worshiped Cobain’s sensitivity and despair without grasping that his depression was terminally immune to adulation.

The original production of the play incorporated Nirvana’s songs, but was hit with a cease-and-desist order from the Cobain estate in subsequent presentations, which led to the creation of original songs to complement the story. This gives the fine cast—Sierra is a particular standout—a showcase for their fine voices, but also, by dint of their show-tunish style (the live band was good, but the music wasn’t very grungy), distances the story from material that may have clarified its connection to Kurt Cobain.

As it is, the play builds up to a theatrical climax of emotion and song, highlighted by Indar’s touching recitation of a Frances Farmer poem, “The Journey.”

And this play can take you on one that might leave you wondering just where you’ve been. Ω

Marvel seeks to change that with its revamped digital comic monthly subscription program, Marvel Unlimited. With access to more than 10,000 titles, there’s enough “BAM!” “BIF!” “POW!” to last a lifetime—even if new issues aren’t available for at least six months following publication. The selection draws big names and a few more slightly obscure titles, primarily from the 1970s and especially from the last decade. More importantly, most titles are available in large runs or in their entirety and, yes, that means hundreds of consecutive issues of your favorite heroes, such as Iron Man, Captain America and Spider-Man. The Smart Panels viewing mode is intuitive and whisks you from panel to panel, though it occasionally clips speech bubbles at odd points.

Smartphones may be slightly too small to read without squinting, but tablets, phablets and laptops are well-equipped to deliver a great reading experience. Best of all, it’s only $10 a month, so if you read three issues per month, it pays for itself. We’re still a ways off from a true Netflix-style service—multiple publishers offering new and old content under one roof—but this is one marvelous step in the right direction.

When Death From Above 1979 vocalist Sebastien Grainger recorded a quieter, more electronic-focused solo record last year, the backup players from his previous solo album were left to their own devices. Bassist-vocalist Nick Sewell and guitaristkeyboardist Andrew Scott are now concentrating on their new project, Biblical, a band that can lull, choogle and demolish, often over the course of a single song. The Canadian band’s debut LP, Monsoon Season, is cut into six tracks, all of which cover serious musical terrain. “Married Man” shuffles along with tumbleweeds over alien surfaces.

“Traitors” and “All Justice, No Peace” begin in similar fashion, before scattering into dystopian cityscapes. Monsoon Season keeps listeners off balance, bouncing between pretty, crystalline guitar lines and immovable, massive walls of distortion (and some ripping solos).

It’s also a record that should be experienced in its entirety. The payoff comes on the spaced-out and spacious 11-minute title track, which closes the album and leaves you feeling a little out of sorts. It might be the closest thing to space travel you’ll experience in 2014.

Nonesuch Bill Frisell has never been one to paint himself into a corner because he always repaints the corner as he enters, creating a new sonic landscape. On Guitar in the Space Age!, the man whose catalog includes jazz, R&B, world music, blues, country and film scores, is back with a tribute to the songs that helped solidify his love of music growing up in the 1950s. Pete Seeger’s “Turn, Turn, Turn” is given a more laid-back, almost dreamlike feel, while The Beach Boys’ “Surfer Girl” maintains the romantic thrust of the original and adds an unexpectedly palpable sense of yearning for the past. “The Shortest Day” is one of two original tracks, and it has an easygoing Americana vibe that would have fit perfectly with Frisell’s 1999 Good Dog, Happy Man album.

The other original, “Lift Off,” is the album’s most subdued number, seen through an adolescent Frisell’s eyes as he looks skyward and tries to imagine rockets flying to the moon. Frisell’s take on The Kinks’ “Tired of Waiting for You” is the album’s most perfect track, ironically playing into the song’s theme of impatience with his penchant for wandering exploration. It is a clever trick, one that shows—as does the rest of the album—why Frisell is a master guitarist.

Whiplash

Christopher Nolan’s protracted journey across space and time Nolan’s new blockbuster runs almost three Csci-fihristopher hours and feels even longer. Interstellar’s plot, exploration of outer space in search of a

new and inhabitable home for the survivors of a dried-up Earth, seems to require the long-form treatment, especially when you factor in time-travel aspects, some elemental family drama, and an elaborately detailed preoccupation with the technologies involved.

The story, scripted by Nolan and his brother Jonathan, never stops moving, but by Cinema 7. Rated PG-13. the time the time-travel stuff starts coming home to roost, it’s hard not to feel that there’s been an awful lot by Juan-Carlos of wasted motion here. It’s certainly Selznick an impressive spectacle, but the things that you could really care about might have been better served in a two-part installment of The Outer Limits.

Interstellar also has astronauts and farmers, black holes and worm Interstellar holes, cryogenics and ghosts, and a Starring robot treated as a fledgling sidekick Matthew (and voiced by Bill Irwin). It McConaughey, Anne Hathaway just may be that the Nolan brothers and Jessica have tried to put too much baggage Chastain. aboard their bound-for-IMAX Directed by behemoth.

Cinemark 14, lead role, the farmer and ex-astronaut Feather River who’s called back to duty for this Cinemas and desperate mission, and he’s fully Paradise functional, but never brilliant, throughout. Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain have a moment or two of special intensity in their respective key roles, but like nearly everybody else in the film’s impressive-sounding cast (Michael Caine and John Lithgow are also present), they are mostly the playthings of the machinery (plot and otherwise) of the Nolans’ scenario.

This one’s worth seeing just for its exceptionally grand ambition, but unlike the classic 2001: A Space Odyssey or the recent Gravity, it’s not something that’ll have me hurrying back for repeat viewings. Ω

The feature-film debut of writer-director Justin Simien

is a charming surprise in several ways.

Dear White People takes a popular but somewhat neglected genre—the comic drama in a collegiate setting—and gives it a lively and engaging set of very contemporary tweaks. The institution in this case is a semi-elite private college called Winchester University, and a varied assortment of AfricanAmerican undergraduates are the key characters.

Racial issues and cross-cultural agitations come into play in this amiably scattered multicharacter tale, which nonchalantly mixes comedy, sociopolitical commentary, romance, satire and the occasional jolt of farce.

Simien’s script is at its most pungent when it’s mixing the dilemmas of identity politics with the college’s inbred traditions of nominal diversity and entrenched hierarchies of race, gender and social class. A frisky, attractive cast helps ensure that these matters, including the intramural divisions among groups of students, never seem merely academic.

Tyler James Williams is especially good as Lionel, the smart kid with the huge Afro, whose indifference to the reigning campus stereotypes makes him the most illuminating and the most imperturbable of the student provocateurs. Tessa Thompson and Teyonah Parris make astute impressions as young women with sharply contrasting attitudes toward the politics of race and gender.

All told, the on-screen results are a little uneven, but there’s zesty entertainment throughout. Some of the allusions and slang in the script seem directed toward an audience that did not include me, but none of that is enough to spoil the larger pleasures of an R-rated film about young people that refuses to pander to immaturity. Ω

Fury

Writer-director David Ayer’s intentions are to show the effects of war on a group of men who are clinging to the last threads of sanity after years of claustrophobic, bloodsoaked terror inside a tank during WWII. Brad Pitt leads the crew as Don “Wardaddy” Collier, a grizzled, scarred up individual resorting to arguably insane behavior as he treks across Nazi Germany. When he’s saddled with new recruit Norman (Logan Lerman), his behavior becomes a strange mix of paternal and completely unhinged. Other members of the crew include Boyd “Bible” Swan (Shia LaBeouf), Trini “Gordo” Garcia (Michael Peña) and Grady “Coon-Ass” Travis (Jon Bernthal). Much of the film takes place inside the tank, with few breaks, and the carnage in the battle scenes is unrelenting. It all builds up to the key sequence where the tank breaks down and Wardaddy decides he isn’t going to run away with a large group of enemy soldiers approaching. As action films go, it’s a real winner. As war films go, it’s one to be remembered. As horror films go, I doubt you’ll see anything scarier this month.

Nightcrawler

The title may smack of some kind of slimy horror film, but Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, with Jake Gyllenhaal in the title role, is mostly a nocturnal character study with a darkly satirical edge to it. And the slime in this case is metaphorical, while the chief horrors are moral and psychological. The nightcrawlers of this tale are the freelance photojournalists who deal in sensationalistic video footage of crime scenes, traffic smashups, and any local calamity gory enough to grab the attention of TV broadcasters.

Gilroy’s movie puts primary focus on one Louis Bloom (Gyllenhaal), a perversely adept newbie who finds a market for his lurid footage in Nina Romina (Rene Russo), the news director at a ratings-starved TV station. Gyllenhaal is superb with a character who seems nerdy and naive even when his actions have lethal consequences. Bloom is thoroughly enterprising and industrious as well as habitually indifferent to an evergrowing list of moral, ethical and legal distinctions, and ultimately he seems more like a satirical concept than a fully realized human character. But the concept and the satire have some very sharp and brilliant edges. Cinemark 14. Rated R —J.C.S.

St. Vincent

Much of the sweet sentimentality here centers on the relationship that forms between the title character (Bill Murray) and the sprightly grade-schooler named Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher) who moves in next door with his beleaguered mother, Maggie (Melissa McCarthy). And the comedy’s brashness comes from Murray’s much-troubled Vincent as well as from an array of quirky secondary characters. Murray brings a surprising number of expressive shadings to a familiar role—the rambunctiously grouchy derelict with a good heart. Naomi Watts does an unexpectedly rowdy turn as a pregnant Russian prostitute. There’s a nightmarish collection of social and domestic problems lurking just below the surface of this tale— broken families, alcohol and gambling addictions, schoolyard bullying, loan sharks, debilitating illness, embittered Vietnam vets, etc.

All of that, ultimately, serves mainly as a kind of short-hand “realism”—bits of real-life sadness used mainly to heighten the sense of relief we’ll feel when the movie reaches its feel-good conclusions. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13 —J.C.S.

hand-to-hand combat, gangster shootouts, car chases, etc. The script, credited to Derek Kolstad, has a plot premise that smacks of travesty: Wick, retired as the hitman’s hitman and grieving over his wife’s recent death, returns to furious action when the son of a Russian mafia honcho steals his vintage automobile and kills his dog. But travesty may be part of the deal here: When the main villain pauses in his final battle with Wick to lament the younger generation’s lack of respect for civilized combat, Keanu/Wick— moving in for the face-to-face kill, and looking thoroughly barbaric—asks, “Do I look ‘civilized’ to you?” Feather River Cinemas.

IN LOCAL NEWS The rumors are true. After more than a decade of showcasing local and visiting artists, Avenue 9 Gallery is closing its doors. After Avenue 9 owner/cofounder Maria Phillips died on Oct. 5, the building housing the gallery was sold, and according to an Avenue 9 press release, on Feb. 8 the gallery will close its doors at the current location (and no plans for reopening in a new location have been announced). There are three more shows on the calendar for the final months: the current Avenue 9 Gallery Waterworks group show, featuring painters Candy Matthews and Cynthia Sexton, plus sculptor Jim Woronow; opening Dec. 10 (and running through Jan. 10, with a Dec. 12 reception) is Fond Farewell and Holiday Sale, an Avenue 9 Arts Guild group show; and last will be the annual Snow Goose Festival juried exhibit, Jan. 16Feb. 7.

And in other visual-art news, over at the current home of Chico State’s University Art Gallery (Trinity 100), busy local art collector Reed Applegate has curated Centenary: John C. Ayres, a retrospective of the longtime Chico State Art Department chair. But after the fact, I can blather on as much as I want about how much fun I had producing and performing at the Country Cover Night (Shit-Kicking the Shit Out of Cancer!) that went down at the 1078 Gallery last Friday.

It was a benefit for my youngest sister, Sheridan DEVO, who at 30 recently had surgery for breast cancer and is just starting months of chemo treatment. Sheridan loves country music, so that’s what we played. And as I told everyone on Friday night, there was no more appropriate style of music we could be covering than one that is tailor-made for dealing with hard times. With country, when bad shit happens, you write a song about it, then crack open a beer and cut loose with the ones you love.

And it was an overwhelmingly wonderful night, with family, friends, co-workers and the local music scene all in one place showing a lot of love, playing beautiful music, and raising a Shit-kickin’ it with Gordy Ohliger. little scratch for my sister. Scientists have only known about it from studying how earthquake waves moved through it.

That changed in the last few years, when two mineralogists found bridgmanite in an ancient meteorite. They were able to analyze the nuances of this basic mineral for the first time. I predict a comparable development for you, Taurus. In the coming months, you will become more familiar with a core part of you that has always been a mystery. The revelations may occur with the help of an influence that resembles a meteorite.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Some

conspiracy theorists are paranoid that aliens or government agencies use radio waves to try to control their minds. They wear tin foil hats to protect themselves from the evil transmissions. But a recent study shows that this protective head gear has an effect that’s opposite to what it’s supposed to. In fact, it actually amplifies the intensity of radio frequencies, making it even more likely that mind-control signals would work their dastardly magic. That’s a generalization, of course. I’m sure you can think of times in your past when mediocre pizza and mediocre sex were just plain mediocre. 21): Ancient people knew about Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn because all of those planets are visible to the naked eye. From the second millennium B.C. until the late 20th century, only three additional planets were found: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. (Pluto was later reclassified as a dwarf planet, however.)

LOVE’S REAL ESTATE Easing Out I called The Finance Guy to get the low-down on rumors of rising interest rates and the death of “Quantitative Easing.”

“Mortgage rates and other long-term interest rates are bound to start rising at the end of this year or First Quarter 2015,” he said.

“Internal minutes from Federal Reserve Board meetings revealed their plan to curtail their controversial program of Quantitative Easing at the end of this year.”

I asked him to explain Quantitative Easing.

“Again? I believe I’ve explained this to you several times.”

“I’ll try to stay awake this time,” I said.

“Well, anyway,” said The Finance Guy, “a quick review of recent history- again - will help you understand why rates will move higher. In the aftermath of the financial market crisis of 2008 the Federal Reserve purchased $1.6 trillion in U.S. government debt. The buying of government debt by the Federal Reserve was known as Quantitative Easing. The theory was to keep interest rates down and grow the economy. The Federal Reserve in essence printed money to hand over to the U.S. Treasury to meet its borrowing needs. The Federal Reserve sold off some of its short-term U.S. Treasury

bonds and took in cash to buy long-term U.S. Treasury bonds of 10 and 30 years in length. This helped push down long-term bond yields, which automatically pushed down interest rates for 30-year fixed rate mortgages.”

I yawned and said, “Why is the Federal Reserve stopping Quantitative Easing if it means interest rates will go up?”

“Aha! The trillion-dollar question!” said The Finance Guy. “The Fed has painted itself into a proverbial corner!”

The Finance Guy went into a protracted explanation which went something like this: The economy is improving and when inflation picks up the Federal Reserve will need to sell off the bonds it purchased.

A lack of investors will step up to buy the bonds, so the Fed will offer higher interest rates on the bonds to attract buyers. Higher interest rates for bonds will mean higher interest rates for mortgages.

I reminded The Finance Guy that his track record for accurate predictions over the last decade was not too good.

“Clearly,” he said, “my calculations and prognostications are more accurate than they appear.”
